Can I import text from this website?

I imported File:Walled city of Ningpo 2 Jiao The Industrial Development Bank of China 1928.jpg as a PD-scan image from Primaltrek by Gary Ashkenazy, there's a lot of handy text below the image explaining it, can I import that text for the file 📁 description (not all of it, just a relevant paragraph or two)? Or is the text copyrighted itself? --Donald Trung (Talk 💬) ("The Chinese Coin Troll" 👿) (Articles 📚) 12:20, 2 January 2018 (UTC)

Text is subject to copyright just as images are. So if the text has significant originality it's probably best not to import it. --bjh21 (talk) 12:39, 2 January 2018 (UTC)

Montage licensing

Hello, I am assembling a montage photo which contains six photos, which collectively have the following licenses: PD, cc-by-2.0 (x2), cc-by-sa-2.5, cc-by-sa-3.0, cc-by-sa-4.0. I'm not sure what license I can use for a derivative work with this combination of images.... is cc-by-sa-4.0 okay? Also, if we have any guidelines or examples around how the individual image sources should be indentified, that'd be great. Thanks, and happy new year. Warren (talk) 01:05, 1 January 2018 (UTC)

@Warren: I believe {{Cc-by-sa-4.0}} is OK. CC-BY-SA licenses generally permit newer versions to be used on derivative works. Here is Creative Commons' information on compatible licences. As for identifying sources, I'd use {{Derived from}} in the "source" parameter of {{Information}}. --bjh21 (talk) 02:21, 1 January 2018 (UTC)

Can I upload old photographs (older than 100 years) to the commons?

Title. I struggle to understand whether I can upload photos to commons if copyright for the said photos had expired? --Karl.i.biased (talk) 12:14, 1 January 2018 (UTC)

@Karl.i.biased: No, 100 years is too short. Please read Commons:Village pump/Copyright/Archive/2017/03#Cut-off_date_for_.7B.7BPD-old.7D.7D.   — Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me 14:03, 1 January 2018 (UTC)
@Karl.i.biased: You can upload them if the copyright has genuinely expired. You'll need to be able to convincingly explain why the copyright has expired. Some 100-year-old photos are in the public domain and some aren't. See COM:PD for more guidance, or tell us a little more about the photos and we can probably help. --bjh21 (talk) 14:16, 1 January 2018 (UTC)

Ineligible edit - stating personal evidence-less opinions on wikipedia?

Dear madam / sir,

Does wikipedia support personal evidence-less opinions by users on its pages? If not, please consider to remove the last edit on https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=File:Jan_Lievens-_King_Guy_of_Lusignan_and_King_Saladin.tif&action=history. I have removed the personal opinion of the editor Sixflashphoto, but Sixflashphoto undid my edit without any talk. I have created a talk page on the matter but to no avail.

Thank you for your consideration.

Best,

Greenberg

First, this is Wikimedia Commons, not Wikipedia. The distinction is important since Commons is generally pretty relaxed about sourcing etc. Second, the opinion you attribute to Sixflashphoto was actually added by an anonymous editor from User:2a02:2788:78:45b:e54f:d556:b552:ccef. Nonetheless, I think your edits were constructive ones, and Sixflashphoto was mistaken in reverting them, so I've restored them. --bjh21 (talk) 17:24, 1 January 2018 (UTC)
Thank you Bjh21. That edit was constructive and I was in error rolling that back. You have my apologies. I remember that file but thought something different until I looked back through the history. The editor was trying to fix that files description. I'm frankly mad at myself about that one since I usually check reverts after and make sure the file was fixed right and had that been done I would have obviously seen that it didn't look right. In any case, I'm sorry and happy new years everyone~ -- Sixflashphoto (talk) 20:34, 1 January 2018 (UTC)

Hi, Most of the images on the Internet are not free. You need an explicit free license (e.g.CC-BY-SA). If you give the website URL, you may get more specific information. Regards, Yann (talk) 13:24, 2 January 2018 (UTC)

Doubt

I have a doubt about a picture. It was uploaded in a website that doesn't state any copy right claim towards the picture, even the website itself. The website is suaramalukudotcom.wordpress.com/ay-patti/. Do you think I can use the public domain license if so? --Elbert Ziv Hitipeuw (talk) 13:57, 2 January 2018 (UTC)

@Elbert Ziv Hitipeuw: No. In general, copyright applies whether or not the author (or anyone else) claims it. This picture is subject to copyright, and as far as we know the photographer hasn't released it under a free licence. Thus, it may not be uploaded to Commons. --bjh21 (talk) 14:12, 2 January 2018 (UTC)

Caumsee's picture of "Dent Blanche"

Hello Help Desk,

I saw a picture on a souvenir place matt of a mountain range in Switzerland, but could never find it's location nor name. Finally on Wikipedia's listing of the best known mountain ranges in Switzerland I found it. It was posted by User:Caumsee and was noted as being "Dent Blanche" which by looking at other pictures of Dent Blanche (near the Matterhorn) you can tell that it is not Dent Blanche. The picture noted as Dent Blanche is the one with the Swiss cow in the foreground and a chain of mountain peaks in the background. That chain of mountain peaks is the one I saw on the souvenir place matt and I would like to ask "Caumsee" if he remembers where that mountain chain is and the name of it. Could you please help me get in contact with him? My e-mail is: [redacted]

thanks very much, Ken B.— Preceding unsigned comment added by Kenbarickman (talk • contribs) 19:31, 2 January 2018 (UTC)

Can I post picture of an old postcard?

I scanned an old postcard (1960's) of my college (Dominican College of Racine) which went out of business in 1974. Since I didn't actually take that picture, can I post it on the Dominican College of Racine Wikipedia page? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Retiredlady1 (talk • contribs) 05:19, 3 January 2018 (UTC)

  • If the postcard (not just your scan but the postcard itself) does not have a copyright notice, you can upload because at that time the U.S. had not joined the Berne Convention, and required an explicit copyright notice. It would be {{PD-US-no notice}}.
  • If the postcard has a copyright notice no later than 1963, and that copyright was not renewed (the latter is a pretty safe bet for a postcard of a defunct college) you can upload it as {{PD-US-not renewed}}.
  • However, if the postcard has a copyright notice 1968 or later, it is almost certainly still in copyright and cannot be uploaded to Commons. However, you still might be able to upload directly to the English-language Wikipedia policy and use it there. They allow some non-free use; Commons does not. See en:Wikipedia:Non-free content criteria, en:Wikipedia:Non-free use rationale guideline, and especially en:Template:Non-free use rationale 2.
  • Sorry this is complicated. That is mostly because copyright law is complicated. - Jmabel ! talk 06:03, 3 January 2018 (UTC)

upload images from internet to Wikipedia

hello can you tell me how can i understand pictures in internet are free and if they are free how can i upload them on Wikipedia

Firstly you need to assess that the images are truly free to use (including commercially) and I would advise you to read Commons:Licensing, then you can upload them here or if they fall under fair use to some Wikimedia projects (depends if they allow for the hosting of fair use images), but free images are generally accepted if they're in the public domain or commercially reusable. --Donald Trung (Talk 💬) ("The Chinese Coin Troll" 👿) (Articles 📚) 11:27, 4 January 2018 (UTC)
Also, do not upload fair use images to Wikimedia Commons as they are not free to use, and always make sure that the website where you're taking the image from is the original author and clearly states that their images may be used commercially through the Creative Commons licenses. --Donald Trung (Talk 💬) ("The Chinese Coin Troll" 👿) (Articles 📚) 11:29, 4 January 2018 (UTC)
And I would also advise you to read this page as websites with free non-public domain images tend to use Creative Commons licenses, but "NC" is not acceptable for Wikimedia Commons as they're not allowed to be freely used commercially. --Donald Trung (Talk 💬) ("The Chinese Coin Troll" 👿) (Articles 📚) 11:32, 4 January 2018 (UTC)

Official portrait of government official

Hello,

I'm sure there is an answer to this query somewhere in the discussions, but I could not find it.

For pages about elected government officials (In this case, a Los Angeles City Councilmember), the official portrait I uploaded was taken down for copyright issues. The photo is officially owned by our office and the City of Los Angeles. It is widely used in the press and City publications. I've seen Wikipedia pages for similar government officials list their official portrait. Can you tell me the process for gaining approval from Wikipedia for displaying an official portrait of an elected official?

Problem with uploading pictures buyed to photographers who copyrighted them and or family and friends.

Hello, I am building a wiki for a racecar driver.
I have pictures of him in many races through the years, and some of them were buyed to photographers in order to use them as we like.
But metadata shows copyright, so my uploads were erased (without noticing me).
I received messages from one of the administrators telling me that we can't use them, and I explained what I'm writing next:
We don't know were to contact the most of them because some of the pictures are from several years now.
In fact, some of the pictures were taken by friends, family and the driver's parents.
Some pictures are essential in order to describe the racing history of the driver.

I really don't get at all how can I upload an image without having this issue.
What can I do in this case?
Thanks in advance.

--Zapateroremendon (talk) 19:20, 5 January 2018 (UTC)

Unfortunately, there is no way for us to accept these images without explicit permission from the copyright holder. If you are able to contact them, we just need an email from them giving consent. The process for this is described at COM:OTRS. Guanaco (talk) 19:22, 5 January 2018 (UTC)

When you choose "Labeled for reuse with modification" in the Advanced Image Search, most images you find should be OK for Commons, license-wise. It is still a good idea to check whether the image is really free. Google might have made a mistake or the Website on which the image is found might give incorrect information. Copyright help regarding File:Free image.jpg

How to delete uploaded picture in commons and how to use a picture I found online but not sure if its copy righted.

Regards,

--Jakelewis2 (talk) 22:19, 6 January 2018 (UTC)

By default, every picture made in the last few decades is copyrighted. The copyright owner might choose to give the image a free license, for example something like {{CC-BY-SA-3.0}}. If they do so, it will normally be stated on the corresponding web page. If no such information is given, the picture is almost certainly not free and may not be uploaded to Commons.
As for deleting a picture: you can ask here, like you did, or click "Nominate for deletion" in the side bar on the left and give the reason why the picture should be deleted. --rimshottalk 22:42, 6 January 2018 (UTC)

new upload wizard

Hi, just a couple of points about the new upload wizard. Loading a file I had scanned from a pre-1900 photograph, it asked for the date the work was created. Firstly it require an exact date (year, month, day) which is hardly possible for old works. (This was true of the old wizard too). Then it when I tried to enter 1892/06/01 by clicking in the calendar it wouldn't accept it anyway. Secondly, it asks whether the file being uplaoded is my own work. Well, the file certainly is. Does the wizard distinguish between the file and the work the file is representing? It is not at all clear. cheers davidnugget — Preceding unsigned comment added by Davidnugget (talk • contribs) 10:39, 6 January 2018 (UTC)

@Davidnugget: Sorry, the Upload Wizard cannot be all things to all people. You are invited to try the experienced version.   — Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me 10:55, 6 January 2018 (UTC)
Davidnugget: "Own work" means a work that you personally created. Scanning someone else's work does not make it your own work. The question is clearly framed in the context of copyright, and scanning an existing work does not give rise to any new copyright.
"1892/06/01" as a date format does not conform to ISO 8601 and is therefore ambiguous. 1892-06-01 (1 June 1892) and 1892-01-06 (6 January 1982) both work. If you click the pencil instead of the calendar, you can also enter just a year – or something like {{other date|firsthalf|1892}} (which renders as first half of 1892
date QS:P,+1892-00-00T00:00:00Z/9,P4241,Q40719687
in the reader's selected language). LX (talk, contribs) 16:55, 6 January 2018 (UTC)

Hi. I understand about own work, I was just commenting that the wizard asks about the "file" and not the "work" which seems misleading. No, I didn't type in the date with slashes, that is just what I wrote here, I actually picked the date by clicking on the date in the displayed calendar month. Your remark about the pencil is useful though, thanks, Actually the copyright status in the UK of pre-1900 material without any proof of publication or authorship is too difficult to deal with so I will have to either move or live until 2039 before I try again. (One item was from a glass plate negative of unknown origin, one a pictorial table mat that at least was published - by Tuck - but authorship unknown). — Preceding unsigned comment added by Davidnugget (talk • contribs) 10:31, 7 January 2018 (UTC)

  • Signing your posts on talk pages is required and it is a Commons guideline to sign your posts on deletion requests, undeletion requests, and noticeboards. To do so, simply add four tildes (~~~~) at the end of your comments. Your user name or IP address (if you are not logged in) and a timestamp will then automatically be added when you save your comment. Signing your comments helps people to find out who said something and provides them with a link to your user/talk page (for further discussion). @Davidnugget: Thanks for the update.   — Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me 10:35, 7 January 2018 (UTC)

Hi. Sorry about the signing, but (1) commons unlike the main site doesn't seem to have have something you can click on to sign, and I don't want to explore my alien keyboard to find funny characters and (2) it seems pretty pointless when I am signed in as the information is added anyway. If this is too argumentative, blame my having read too many wiki talk pages! From reading other recent entries it seems old photos are a no-go area here for amateurs. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Davidnugget (talk • contribs) 15:49, 7 January 2018 (UTC)

When and how much to translate

Hello, Sometimes editors translate parts of a name and sometimes not. For example, see Category:Capes of Portugal. Some translate "capo" to "cape" and some do not. Does it matter? Should I search for all possibilities before creating a category? I created Category:Cape Sardão (now made into a redirect) before discovering Category:Cabo Sardão.) Thanks, Kalbbes (talk) 20:25, 7 January 2018 (UTC)

As a general rule the English name is preferred on Wikimedia Commons, but if the native (Portuguese language) name is most commonly used it's also acceptable. In general there really isn't a rule about category naming as I've seen museums with non-English and English names from the same city 🏙. I would advise you to use what naming convention is most used in the category tree 🌳 you're adding to (if the others are in English then do it in English, if the others are in Portuguese then do it in Portuguese, as long as the category is appropriate and findable). --Donald Trung (Talk 💬) ("The Chinese Coin Troll" 👿) (Articles 📚) 10:47, 8 January 2018 (UTC)

Commons keeps rotating a book

Hello 👋🏻 everyone,

I would like to upload this book to Wikimedia Commons to use in Wikisource, but for some reason it keeps rotating back to this. I've tried converting the file to .djcu myself with the same results. This issue happens with both the IA-uploader and the standard UploadWizard. --Donald Trung (Talk 💬) ("The Chinese Coin Troll" 👿) (Articles 📚) 12:54, 9 January 2018 (UTC)

uploading a file that the owner has given permission to use

Hi Help Desk,

I am a wikipedia editor, a participant in the WikiWomen project. I have been turning Red List Women Archaeologists to blue this past year. I have been able to obtain a few images for my biographies, usually from archive deptartments from Universities associated with the archaeologist. I have sent requests for images with a hyperlink to Wikipedia guidelines for using images and directions for uploading photos. And the University representatives have uploaded the photos directly to Wikicommons. Perfect for me!

Today, the media department of the Univ. of Washington sent me photos with permission attached. Below is the permission sent to me thru email: Please advise how much of this information I need to include when I upload the photo.

"I hereby affirm that I represent Julie Stein and the Burke Museum, the sole owner of the exclusive copyright of the media work in the attached images and have legal authority in my capacity to release the copyright of that work.

I agree to publish the above-mentioned content under the following free license: Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike 4.0 International.[5]

I acknowledge that by doing so I grant anyone the right to use the work, even in a commercial product or otherwise, and to modify it according to their needs, provided that they abide by the terms of the license and any other applicable laws.

I am aware that this agreement is not limited to Wikipedia or related sites.

I am aware that the copyright holder always retains ownership of the copyright as well as the right to be attributed in accordance with the license chosen. Modifications others make to the work will not be claimed to have been made by the copyright holder.

I acknowledge that I cannot withdraw this agreement, and that the content may or may not be kept permanently on a Wikimedia project.

Лицензия на использование файлов в Wikimedia

Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivs (by-nc-nd) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Lana Seeker Parker (talk • contribs) 06:02, 10 January 2018 (UTC)

Hello! We would like to post an article about our game and include our artwork as images. At the same time, we don’t want files uploaded to Wikimedia to be changed in any way, which includes not giving the right to create derivative works, adapt, make technical and any other changes. When we tried to upload a file, we didn’t find a license that meets the above requirements among the available options. However, this website http://opendefinition.org/licenses/nonconformant/ mentions the types of licenses that do not allow to create derivative works. Is it possible to publish the files we upload under the specified types of licenses, and if so, how can this be done and where can we find the full text of the following licenses: Attribution-NoDerivs (by-nd) and Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivs (by-nc-nd)? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Lana Seeker Parker (talk • contribs) 06:51, 10 January 2018 (UTC)

File:Angelo Barozzi, procurateur de San Marco.jpg, missing licence

I removed the {{self|cc-by-sa-3.0}} and |source={{own}} from Angelo Barozzi, procurateur de San Marco.jpg as this engraving from about the seventeenth century is clearly not the "own work" of the uploader. But I'm unable to trace the real source of the image, and thus to provide a real licence (as I was able to do for Francesco barozzi.jpg). Now a bot wants me to fix it. What's the best way forward here? Should I restore the bogus licence? Justlettersandnumbers (talk) 22:44, 7 January 2018 (UTC)

I wouldn’t start a fight (sc. DR) over it, given that it’s in use, but IMO the lack of source is a bigger problem than the spurious own-work claim. Judging from the style and technique it’s very unlikely to be modern, and XVII c. seems quite plausible to me too, but we have no basis for the identification beyond the filename & description provided. Evidently some WP editors are satisfied enough to use it in articles about the family, but to my mind absence of provenance is a major impediment to useability.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 18:51, 8 January 2018 (UTC)
@Justlettersandnumbers, Jmabel, and Odysseus1479: Habiti D'Huomeni Et Donne Venetiane Con La Processione Della Serma. Signoria Et Altri Particolari Cioè Trionfi Feste Et Cerimonie Publiche Della Nobilissima Città Di Venetia says this is "One of the Procuratori of San Marco seated, through the window behind him a view of the Redentore., c. 1610", as published in "Habiti D'Huomeni Et Donne Venetiane Con La Processione Della Serma. Signoria Et Altri Particolari Cioè Trionfi Feste Et Cerimonie Publiche Della Nobilissima Città Di Venetia" by "Giacomo Franco, printer, publisher" c. 1610. This would certainly support {{PD-old-100}}.   — Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me 08:05, 9 January 2018 (UTC)
Good find, @Jeff G.! With that info (not necessarily the link to that particular site, though) in the Source field, the provenance will be cleared up. Since the uploader’s “own work“ (AGF=scanning) claim is dubious, I think a {{PD-Art}} including appropriate US and Italy fields would be best: what that adds to PD-old-X, in effect, is the statement that we don’t care who made the reproduction.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 08:30, 9 January 2018 (UTC)
@Jeff G., Jmabel, and Odysseus1479: , thank you so much for detailed and helpful advice (and some excellent detective work!). I've uploaded a higher- resolution version of the file, followed your licencing suggestions, and asked for the page to be renamed since there's no reason I can see to believe that this person was called Angelo Barozzi. If you are not the author of the picture then you can simply let your co-worker e-mail 📧 the OTRS team and they will undelete the picture once a valid OTRS ticket 🎟 has been processed. --Donald Trung (Talk 💬) ("The Chinese Coin Troll" 👿) (Articles 📚) 12:34, 10 January 2018 (UTC)
Just to clarify, your co-worker 👷‍♀️ is technically the copyright © owner of the image (unless it includes other factors such as being a photograph of other copyrighted material), even if they don't care about the copyright Wikimedia Commons still does. All images you upload here should have appropriate permission. Verbal consent has no legal grounds here so you must provide evidence that you in fact do have this permission which is why the OTRS team should verify this. --Donald Trung (Talk 💬) ("The Chinese Coin Troll" 👿) (Articles 📚) 12:40, 10 January 2018 (UTC)

Creative Common Attribution Copy Rights Licenses Options

The point of a copyright licence is to permit someone who isn't you to use the work. If you don't want to permit anyone to use your work, you don't need any licence at all. Also, your question apparently has nothing to do with Wikimedia Commons, so this is probably not the best place to ask. --bjh21 (talk) 17:56, 10 January 2018 (UTC)
... but as Jeff said, you're only allowed to upload files to Commons if you permit other people to use and modify them. If you don't want that, don't upload your files to Commons. --bjh21 (talk) 17:59, 10 January 2018 (UTC)

License format for screen cap from video files already hosted on Commons

Hi there,

If I want to use a still image from a video file hosted on Commons, what type of license do I apply? The concerned source is this, which has been released under a CC-BY-SA 3.0 license, so I expect that extracting a still is allowed, but I will need to attribute. Which template do I use? Do I need to do anything with the source description? Is there an example where this has been done where I can look at? Cheers, Milliped (talk) 21:28, 10 January 2018 (UTC)

@Milliped: You can extract a still from any video on Commons. That's one of our licensing requirements. Since this one is released under a Share Alike licence, you need to use either the same licence or a compatible one. And of course you need to attribute it. So the license template could be {{cc-by-sa-3.0-nl|Nederlands Instituut voor Beeld en Geluid}}. In the "source" field of {{Information}}, I'd suggest using {{derived from|Schiphol bestaat 30 jaar Weeknummer 50-20 - Open Beelden - 44183.ogv}} to indicate derivation from another file on Commons. --bjh21 (talk) 22:37, 10 January 2018 (UTC)
@Bjh21: Thanks for that! I uploaded the file here, I hope the settings I applied there are correct. Cheers, Milliped (talk) 08:13, 11 January 2018 (UTC)
@Milliped: That looks good enough. I would mention the time within the video that the frame comes from, and probably make the image the same dimensions as the original video, but neither of those is important. --bjh21 (talk) 13:03, 11 January 2018 (UTC)

Chinese denominations

What is the difference between the denominations cash/wén (文),Coppers/Copper coins (枚),Tiao/Diao (吊),Chuàn (串), Fen/cents (分), Dollars/Yuan (圓), and Taels (兩)? I keep getting back to this question while organising Chinese banknotes and so far from what I can tell both Cash coins and Copper coins trade at 1000 for 1 Yuan, but also for 1 Tael/Liang. I thought 💭 that a Chuàn is 1000 cash as the term “1 string of cash coins” usually means 1000 cash coins but 1 Tiao could either be 50 coppers or 49 coppers (枚). Are coppers equal to cash? When referring to cash coins Tiao and Chuàn are just synonyms used from the Mongol Empire (Yuan Dynasty) onwards, but with Chinese Republican banknotes I can’t seem get a clear meaning. I want to organise the categories based on denominations but as I don’t know what relationship is between many of these denominations I’m leaving that out for now (also I am excluding provincial denominations such as the East-Turkestani Lac-system, the Manchurian Kopecks and Rubles as well as the Silver Dollars Vs. Custom Gold Units differentiation).

@Rorabonn: Assuming you are the copyright owner, you can generally grant any completely free and unrestricted license. Your other file File:Schacht 2.jpg was released under "Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike 4.0" as license. If this version is OK for the second file too, add {{self|cc-by-sa-4.0}} directly below the new file's license header (I already prepared an empty "Licensing" header for you) - you can "Edit" the file information page just like you edited this talkpage. By the way, a specific German-language help forum is available at Commons:Forum (although editors here will try to help as well of course). GermanJoe (talk) 13:43, 12 January 2018 (UTC)

Public domain with a google watermark

I am looking at this

https://ia801407.us.archive.org/9/items/miscellaneousba00bartgoog/miscellaneousba00bartgoog.pdf.

The work is a translation from 1918 while the person is a professor at a US university. Only thing is that it has a google watermark on it. I was wondering if I can upload it here onto commons. Thanks.

Artix Kreiger (talk) 22:44, 12 January 2018 (UTC)

  • This question might better be brought to Commons:Village pump/Copyright. That said, while I'm not a lawyer, I can't imagine any legal basis for Google to claim copyright on a public domain book simply because they digitized it and slapped their logo onto each page. As far as I can tell, the conditions they state at the front of the PDF are a request for a courtesy, and I don't really see any particular reason in this case to extend that courtesy. - 06:19, 13 January 2018 (UTC)
There are at least 4 copies found at archive.org only one of which happens to be a Google scanned copy. Remember that all books published in the US before 1923 are in the public domain and making a "slavish copy" does not make a new copyright, so while Google may claim their digitized copy has a non-commercial restriction and while we cannot give you legal intellectual property advise, there is no legal basis considering the "Corel 'v' Bridgeman" case. There are several webpages that discuss the topic and the case if you are interested but, if you have concerns, just use a different version. Ww2censor (talk) 12:05, 13 January 2018 (UTC)

Facebook requirements are incompatible with a free license. Do not put images from Commons on Facebook unless there are in the public domain, or there are your own files. Regards, Yann (talk) 16:54, 13 January 2018 (UTC)

How to delete a photo

Hello,

I would like to delete an image that I created and uploaded to Wikipedia Commons because I would like to replace it with a completely different, better quality image.

Can someone please explain how to delete or nominate a file/page for deletion? I have read the instructions on the Files for Discussion page but I do not understand them.

Thanks,

CartleR255 (talk) 02:19, 14 January 2018 (UTC)

@CartleR255: First, you need one or more valid reason(s) for deletion. Uploader request and low quality probably qualify in your case. Then, you may use the easy JavaScript method of enabling AjaxQuickDelete on Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-gadgets and then refreshing and clicking "Nominate for deletion" in the tools on the sidebar of the page you want deleted. You may instead use the more labor-intensive {{Delete}}, following all the instructions to the letter.   — Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me 03:04, 14 January 2018 (UTC)

Usual process after removing a license

I'm not that experienced a Commons user, and I have a "what's the usual process" question. I uploaded File:Utah snow sampler.png a couple of months ago, and at my request another user uploaded File:Utah snow sampler (cropped).png which is a modification of it. I've just discovered that the license I had put on it ({{PD-USGov}}) is invalid; it's a publication of Utah state. I've removed the license tags. My question is: what's the normal next step? I could just leave them, and presumably a bot will find them, tag them, and they will get deleted. I could tag them with {{subst:nld}}. Or I could nominate them for deletion, which seems like a bureaucratic approach for a simple situation like this. What's the best practice? Mike Christie (talk) 15:25, 14 January 2018 (UTC)

Edit tools have disappeared

My edit tools (the ones at top of edit window) have disappeared. This has been happening now and then over the last few weeks but now seems final. I reinstalled the "old edit tools" (the ones underneath edit window) via Preferences, but I'd like to get the new ones back. What do I do to achieve this? Thanks, Kalbbes (talk) 21:54, 11 January 2018 (UTC)

I don't care about this anymore as I've gotten used to the old edit tools. Thanks, Kalbbes (talk) 20:14, 13 January 2018 (UTC)
I am extremely annoyed by the imposition of some javascript-type replacement for the traditional editing source tools - it takes ages to load, and all my editing tools are gone - there is ability to click on commonly used code like defaultsort etc. What happened? Who decided to impose this on editors??? I can't even find my signature clickon.....

Multiple file upload not working 14-01-2018

Hi

I've been trying to upload some files using the "wiki loves monuments" map (https://tools.wmflabs.org/wlmuk/#/q/Q2291566). it goes to the following upload page: https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special:UploadWizard

For the previous several months, I've chosen multiple files to upload, then ticked "These files are my own work" on page 2 as in the screen print below:

I was then presented with a page of repeating data entry boxes, one per photo, pre-populated with a thumbnail and the details of the images, title etc from the map. Since last Sunday 07/01/2018, instead, it presents a page with a single data entry box without the fields pre-populated and no thumbnail as in the image below:

It appears to be not working (or, I guess, it could have been changed to work in a different way?)

Anyone any ideas or experienced similar?

I'm using Windows 7 and Google chrome (same as the previous few months when it was working fine)

It is usually related to incorrectly working javascript. Do you have some user js scripts or gadgets enabled? Can you report what you see in the browser console? Ruslik (talk) 19:41, 15 January 2018 (UTC)

I used this logo and got rid of the "C.A.R.E.S." part of it and added a white background in order to create the flag depicted here to add to the Wikipedia page for Sugar Hill, Georgia. — Preceding unsigned comment added by ParadiseDesertOasis8888 (talk • contribs) 02:59, 16 January 2018 (UTC)

  • You can't upload it to Commons unless you can get a license granted by the copyright-holder; that tree would definitely be copyrighted. It might fall under the English-language Wikipedia's allowance for non-free use, so you might be able to upload it directly to the English-language Wikipedia for use there, but you'd have to take that up there, not here on Commons. - Jmabel ! talk 03:34, 16 January 2018 (UTC)

Copyright of an existing file

Hi, I came across this image on the English Wikipedia, and it doesn't seem through the description that the publisher has provided consent for release of the image. The metadata shows that photoshop has been used to capture/modify the image. I'm not much of an expert in the license and copyright of images in Wikimedia. Could you kindly check it. Thanks, Mark the train (talk) 07:45, 16 January 2018 (UTC)

Hi Mark! There was no way for you to know by looking at the file description, but there is a blanket permission from Bollywood Hungama to use their photos under a Creative Commons Attribution license (not Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike, as the uploader claimed). I've changed the licensing tag to one that mentions the correct version of the license, mentions the blanket permission, and triggers license review. Thanks, LX (talk, contribs) 11:22, 16 January 2018 (UTC)
Thanks for letting me know. I've seen several photos in multiple articles that describe the permission by Bollywood Hungama, including another in this same article, but did not know about the blanket permission. Thanks again. Mark the train (talk) 11:28, 16 January 2018 (UTC)

Posting an image of an actor

Hi all, I am currently writing an article about an actor friend of mine, while posting a photograph I am unable to put his photograph taking from facebook or any other internet source because of copyright issues. I have a doubt. If the photographer herself upload the photo on her account and gives me the link can I use it in my article? The photographer is also a friend of mine who took the subject's photograph? In this case does the photo need to be unique? Meaning if the photograph has already been uploaded somewhere over facebook or other internet source is there any other legal issue? Please let me know.

Another question , when the photographer is uploading the image which legal code of permission should she grant so that I can use that in my article? Please post any pdf or step by step guideline if there is any. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Prachetawiki (talk • contribs) 20:50, 16 January 2018 (UTC)

Photos that have been published elsewhere are likely to be challenged, even when uploaded by the creator, because accounts here are ostensibly anonymous. To prevent this, she should send a permission letter according to the instructions on COM:OTRS. As for the licence, see COM:LIC for what‘s acceptable; COM:CC-BY-SA versions are about the most restrictive and are popular choices.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 21:04, 16 January 2018 (UTC)
Prachetawiki, since the actor is a friend of yours, perhaps the simplest solution is simply to take a photo yourself. -mattbuck (Talk) 22:43, 16 January 2018 (UTC)

That means the photographer should upload the photo in step 1 and step 2 he/she send that letter template to wikipedia? (I do have the letter template) Does step 2 work alone? Please let me know?

I already have picture with him taken by another friend but that's already posted on facebook , so same copyright issues. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Prachetawiki (talk • contribs) 06:57, 17 January 2018 (UTC)

File:Groninger-museum.jpg for instance. If you are using in your interface the English language and switch to some other languages like "Italian" the category:Photographs taken on 2004-08-26 disappears. Why? It sound a little bit racist--Pierpao.lo (listening) 12:25, 17 January 2018 (UTC)

This appears to be because {{Taken on}} uses {{File type}} to decide whether to use Category:Photographs taken on 2004-08-26 or Category:Videos of 2004 or something else. Unfortunately, {{File type}} is internationalised, so in Italian rather than expanding to "image" it expands to "immagine", which isn't recognised by {{Taken on}}. Really, the task of recognising file types should be separated from the task of translating their names. --bjh21 (talk) 13:18, 17 January 2018 (UTC)

Uploading Logos

I've written several company articles on Wikipedia (e.g. Nutrien), and would like to include logos for the companies. Here is how I plan to proceed:
1. Screenshot the logo from the company website/annual report.
2. Use an image modification program (GIMP probably) to crop the logo, and convert it to SVG format.
3. Upload the photo to Wikimedia Commons, or Wikipedia directly.
Are there any technical/legal problems with this course of action? If so, I'd like to hear about acceptable alternatives. Most major companies on Wikipedia have logos on their pages, so it can be done. And yes, I've read most of the boilerplate policies, but they say what you can't do, not what you can or should do. --Mparrault (talk) 19:53, 18 January 2018 (UTC)

Are those logos simple enough to qualify as {{Pd-textlogo}}? Ruslik (talk) 20:08, 18 January 2018 (UTC)
To follow up on what Ruslik asked: if so, you can upload them here with {{Pd-textlogo}} in place of a license; you will probably also want to mark them as {{Trademarked}}. If not, then (assuming you are talking about the English-language Wikipedia) you can upload them to the English-language Wikipedia -- not to Commons -- as non-free images, which are allowed (within certain parameters) on the English-language Wikipedia, but not on Commons. See en:Wikipedia:Non-free content criteria and in particular en:Template:Non-free logo and en:Template:Non-free use rationale logo. - Jmabel ! talk 21:15, 18 January 2018 (UTC)
Some of the logos I want to upload might qualify under {{Pd-textlogo}}, but some (including Nutrien), likely do not. I think I will upload to the English-language Wikipedia, since that seems simpler. Thanks for the help. -Mparrault (talk) 22:00, 18 January 2018 (UTC)

My Edittools are broken again

Licensing

I was wondering whether Embassies of the US count as a part of the Federal Government and therefore, their work too is free. Or, are they somewhat different? Because I was thinking of adding this in the article [[Wikipedia|Shaktikanta Das] (I have been adding photos to the articles I have created/significantly contributed to on the English Wiki). SshibumXZ (talk) 11:12, 18 January 2018 (UTC)

@SshibumXZ: The "About / Read more" Terms of Use of https://www.flickr.com/people/usembassynewdelhi/ are quite explicit about not allowing derivative works, as is this specific photo's license https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nd/2.0/ (although they differ in version number, but maybe that's Flickr's fault). It is quite possible that this embassy contracts out some photographic work, which would then not be covered by the copyright exemption as a work of the U.S. Federal Goverment. Also, any photos related to this embassy or its personnel taken by a photographer who were not on this embassy's grounds at the time (but instead was in the surrounding country of India) would not be taken on sovereign U.S. soil, and therefore would be subject to India's copyright laws rather than the U.S.'s, even if the photographer was an employee of the U.S. Federal Government. Without a definitive statement that all photos were taken by U.S. Federal Government employees in the performance of their duties on embassy grounds, I would apply COM:PRP. What and where was FACTA?   — Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me 16:16, 18 January 2018 (UTC)
@Jeff G.: Oh, ok. FACTA is an information-sharing bilateral agreement. India ratified it in 2015, and as far as I can tell, it was signed by both parties in the US embassy in India, but I know that this amounts to nothing without having a reliable citation to back it up, so, COM:PRP applies. Thanks for the help, though! SshibumXZ (talk) 03:28, 19 January 2018 (UTC)
It's likely we can separate out works that aren't done by employees of the Embassy, especially if they're tagged with photographer. Where a photo is taken is irrelevant in international copyright; the question is where is it published and sometimes who is the creator. I'd be surprised in this day of post-film, that any photo was first published in India instead of being uploaded to US/international sites.--Prosfilaes (talk) 01:09, 20 January 2018 (UTC)

Upload of cropped images gives licencing problems

I did uploads of cropped pictures taken from files found in commons. One of them is a plate with two photographs taken on a event that took place in November 1904. The other is a page from a encyclopedia with 8 illustrations published before 1915. Both files have a PD licence. The original source is mentioned in the uploaded, cropped files. Meantime, one of the photographs and all illustrations are marked for deletion:

What went wrong?--Chief tin cloud (talk) 22:37, 19 January 2018 (UTC)

  • Someone marked them, correctly, as lacking clear source/permission, but then worked out the basis on which they could be kept and edited accordingly. @Chief tin cloud: , you would do well to look at the difference between your last edit on each of these & the current state to see how this should be done. - Jmabel ! talk 22:59, 19 January 2018 (UTC)
Hi Chief tin cloud: for the future, when you want to crop an image I suggest you consider using the CropTool that can be activated in your commons Preferences, under Gadgets. The CropTool will then appears in the left side of your screen. It saves everyone a lot of time because it transfers all the correct and appropriate information into the cropped image, such as source, license, author, etc. It even leaves a backlink to the original and visa versa so long as the original has been positively reviewed. That way all the proper information is there and most often does not need to be manually reviewed again. If you are just cropping a small bit of the image like a frame you may decide to overwrite the original image but for more major crops, such as those you did, you should upload the copped version as a separate new image, but you have a choice. Good luck. Ww2censor (talk) 23:08, 19 January 2018 (UTC)

Is an image such as this one suitable for upload to Commons (or to en-wiki, if you happen to know), given the Smithsonian's explanation that "Smithsonian Content is identified as having “no known copyright restrictions” when the Smithsonian is unaware of any copyright restrictions on its use", or do we need to be more sure than that? Gdeblois19: All content here has to be under a free license or in the public domain. How images by the Associated Press would meet that requirement? I don't think think this image is acceptable, unless the photographer sends a permission for a free license via COM:OTRS. Regards, Yann (talk) 05:19, 21 January 2018 (UTC)

"Global usage" possibly broken

It seems that the "global usage" and "usage on other wikis" don't list all the pages correctly. There are quite a few stale pages listed here: e.g. br/eo/kk/lb and a few others don't use this file anymore, but still show on the list despite all linking to the same redirect (see here) which has been changed (from 2017 to 2018 version of the graphics) quite a while back. Other language wikis (e.g., ca/cs along with many others) seem to have handled the update in the redirect timely and correctly, so I wonder if this has something to do with individual wikis' (mis)configuration which results in this incorrect behavior? Cherkash (talk) 05:07, 9 January 2018 (UTC)

It is probably a caching issue. Ruslik (talk) 19:54, 9 January 2018 (UTC)

Why these files should be changed from Category:Roads in Tainan City to "Category:Roads in China"?

Please see these files: File:新港社大道空拍實景.jpg, File:台南交流道.jpg, File:福爾摩沙公路 ( 官田區 ).jpg, and File:半夜的台南交流道.jpg. All these shots are taken in Tainan. But Joostik said: "Officially thats still considered China." I think what Joostik means is: Taiwan belongs to China, these files should not be added Category:Roads in Tainan City. I am confused about the edit by Joostik, why these files should be changed from Category:Roads in Tainan City to "Category:Roads in China"? These files were taken by Guanting17. I have asked this author on his talk page that if these files were taken in "Tainan" then he should feel free to explain why not add "Category:Roads in Tainan City".--Kai3952 (talk) 06:13, 13 January 2018 (UTC)

Generally the lowest possible category should be used, Roads in China should only be used for sub-categories. Tainan is a part of China but not the People's Republic of China so if "China" in this context refers to the People's Republic of China it shouldn't be used at all (as Tainan belongs to the Republic of China which is a completely different country), but if a sub-category could be used then using main-categories (let's say using "Streets in the United States of America" over "Streets in [US American city]") then the latter is the preferred option as it could overpopulate the former category. --Donald Trung (Talk 💬) ("The Chinese Coin Troll" 👿) (Articles 📚) 10:09, 13 January 2018 (UTC)
@Donald Trung: Your point is... ?--Kai3952 (talk) 10:37, 13 January 2018 (UTC)
For categorizing the photo, it is completely irrelevant that Tainan is in China. Category:Roads in Tainan City is the more specific category, so that is the one that should be used. Just like they don't get placed explicitly in Category:Roads in Asia or Category:Roads. - Jmabel ! talk 16:42, 13 January 2018 (UTC)
@Jmabel: This is the first time I have ever encountered a situation where someone said: "Officially thats still considered China." Since then I'm worried, am I doing something wrong?--Kai3952 (talk) 20:05, 13 January 2018 (UTC)
What I'm saying is that, for this purpose, it doesn't matter on whit whether it's considered China or not. Category:Roads in Tainan City belongs there; Category:Roads in China does not. The rationale would be different, but the result is the same. - Jmabel ! talk 04:14, 14 January 2018 (UTC)
@Jmabel: For me it is a nightmare, and I'm not willing to deal with it again.--Kai3952 (talk) 08:34, 18 January 2018 (UTC)
@Kai3952: The images were never moved from Category:Roads in Tainan City to Category:Roads in China as your header suggests. Joostik simply moved the image from a non-existent category with Chinese characters to Category:Roads in China. Perhaps that was a mistake, but it's not worth continuing discussion about. He gave you a clear answer on his talk page early on, "Officially thats still considered China. But lets not get into that: just change the category to Roads in Taiwan." Instead of moving the categories appropriately, you've continued to bother him on his talk page and now here.. I've moved the images to Category:Roads in Tainan City. Can we end discussion? - Themightyquill (talk) 09:59, 18 January 2018 (UTC)
@Themightyquill: As I just said above, and I'm not willing to deal with it again.--Kai3952 (talk) 10:06, 18 January 2018 (UTC)
The key point is that political issue involving China(People's Republic of China) and Taiwan(Republic of China) because he said "Officially thats still considered China." Can anyone tell me what should i do?--Kai3952 (talk) 21:43, 18 January 2018 (UTC)
@Kai3952: I suggest you do nothing. You say you are "not willing to deal with it again", and none of the images in question are currently in Category:Roads in China or any other possibly objectionable categories. Given that you say you are not interested in wading in, and there does not appear to be any current problem, I can't see anything to be done. "Somebody is wrong on the Internet" does not always call for action. Or do you see some issue I'm missing that you think still needs fixing? - Jmabel ! talk 22:26, 18 January 2018 (UTC)
@Jmabel: I thought I was wrong because he told me the Chinese government(People's Republic of China) considers "Tainan" to belong to China. If I change the category from "Roads in China" to "Roads in Tainan", and I bet Chinese would be opposed to change them for the same reason. Do you know what I'm asking?--Kai3952 (talk) 11:49, 19 January 2018 (UTC)
@Kai3952: As far as I can see, none of these images are currently in Category:Roads in China, so what is the problem? - Jmabel ! talk 17:49, 19 January 2018 (UTC)
@Jmabel: If changed to "Tainan" is right, then why does he say "Officially thats still considered China"?--Kai3952 (talk) 07:34, 20 January 2018 (UTC)
@Kai3952: If you want to know why he says something, you'll have to ask him, not me, won't you? Again: unless there is some change you want to make to how the photos are now categorized, I see no point in discussing this further here. - Jmabel ! talk 18:42, 20 January 2018 (UTC)
@Jmabel: I have asked him why, but he has not given an answer yet. So my question is, how can you be sure that you are doing this right?--Kai3952 (talk) 16:09, 21 January 2018 (UTC)

As explained at Commons:Project scope#Excluded educational content, we do not host any encyclopedia articles (including biographies) here at the Wikimedia Commons media repository. Encyclopedia articles belong at Wikipedia, but you shouldn't write about your family members there.
If your father is notable, someone else will eventually write about him. If and when that happens, a photograph would be useful, so if you have a photograph that you personally created yourself that you think might be useful, please upload it. (If the photograph was taken by someone else, it is unlikely that you will be able to publish it legally here.) Please see Commons:First steps. LX (talk, contribs) 09:50, 21 January 2018 (UTC)

Women's March subcats

Category:2017 Women's March in the United States

These all have names like "Charleston Women's March‎" but rather than "2017 Charleston Women's March‎" and now 2018 images are arriving. Should there be some structural changes here?

Ping User:MB298 and User: Rhododendrites

Best, Anna Frodesiak (talk) 08:04, 21 January 2018 (UTC)

I’d just keep them at their original names, since 2017 was the “original” march and 2018 (and potential future marches) are just continuations. Plus, there are so many 2017 original cats that it would be pointless to move them all. MB298 (talk) 08:14, 21 January 2018 (UTC)
Fair enough. Thank you. :) Anna Frodesiak (talk) 08:19, 21 January 2018 (UTC)
@Anna Frodesiak and MB298: I'm not sure if this is a continuation (as opposed to the second in a potential series/annual events) except in the sense that that framing plays into it being an ongoing movement. Regardless, dates in categories are often meant to distinguish events, even when the events don't have dates in their names. It's confusing to have a second annual event be a subcategory of the previous year's (for naming/organizational reasons, but also because then we have a 2018 event the child of a category in 2017-related categories). While I don't think it would be urgent to rename categories for events in locations that did not have a second event, for consistency's sake I'm inclined to agree that it would be a good idea. MB298, if you don't object to this I'd be happy to help move. — Rhododendrites talk14:19, 21 January 2018 (UTC)
Hi Rhododendrites. Exactly my thinking and why I posted here. If there is consensus, I'd be happy to help with the restructuring using cat-a-lot. Feel free to assign me any group you'd like handled. I'll even do all the work if you are too busy. Ping MB298. Best, Anna Frodesiak (talk) 20:17, 21 January 2018 (UTC)

upload_by_url Permissions

Hi, how does one attain permissions to upload via the api? We are developing a website in which users upload original images and/or articles. We would then like to create a script on our server that automatically uploads these images to Wikimedia Commons via the api. Is this possible? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Alanaschild (talk • contribs) 21:56, 22 January 2018 (UTC)

  • Possibly, but possibly not. Could you please expand on the nature of your site? If you intend it to be a means to upload to Wikipedia and Commons, what are the precautions against it turning into a spam factory (that is, since there are people trying to spam us all the time, what stops them from exploiting your site to do that)? Also, normally each uploader to Commons needs to have their own account here; consider (for example) how Flickr2Commons uses OAuth to validate who is using it. I suspect there are a bunch of other considerations before anyone can give you a useful answer. - Jmabel ! talk 22:07, 22 January 2018 (UTC)

Copyright help regarding File:Anatomy of a Failure.pdf

This is just a magazine article, originally uploaded from the publisher's website. The original link is dead. How do treat this in the Wikimedia upload?

--Lexjuris (talk) 05:23, 22 January 2018 (UTC)

@Lexjuris: You stop uploading content for which you don't have proper permission. I have nominated all of your uploads for deletion due to lack of proper permission.   — Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me 05:48, 22 January 2018 (UTC)

@Jeff G: Questions: (1) What is the "proper permission" for court documents that are in the public domain? (2). Regarding the magazine article, Anatomy of Failure, considering that it was uploaded from the publishers website (link now dead), what would be there "proper mission" for the article?Lexjuris (talk) 18:26, 22 January 2018 (UTC)

@Lexjuris: What makes you think that the court documents are in the public domain? The article author and publisher still have rights.   — Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me 18:49, 22 January 2018 (UTC)

@Jeff G: Clearly court orders and opinions are public domain because they are government documents for the public. Submissions during a case by the government prosecutor are also considered public domain because it is a government created document. Filings by the plaintiff or defendant are also considered public domain because we have an open court system. Work memos or anything done to prepare a submission is protected as private, and exhibits like a poem or book are song or piece of art, etc, of course are not i the public domain. --Lexjuris (talk) 01:46, 23 January 2018 (UTC)

A "proper permission" would be a written permission from the legitimate copyright holder to publish the content under a free license sent in to our permission archive. If a court document really is in the public domain, then no permission needed – just a valid tag explaining why the content is in the public domain. But most court documents are not in the public domain. If they were, copyright lawsuits would be pretty pointless. And so far, you haven't claimed that any of the court documents you've uploaded are in the public domain. For a couple of them, you've claimed that they are copyrighted and that the copyright holder has issued a Creative Commons copyright license to the work (although those claims seem to be completely made up). LX (talk, contribs) 19:00, 22 January 2018 (UTC)

@LX: Clearly court orders and opinions are public domain because they are government documents for the public. Submissions during a case by the government prosecutor are also considered public domain because it is a government created document. Filings by the plaintiff or defendant are also considered public domain because we have an open court system. It is all available to the public through pacer.com (for a minimal fee) which is a federal judiciary website. Work memos or anything done to prepare a submission are protected as private, and exhibits like a poem or book are song or piece of art, etc, of course are not in the public domain. I clearly did it wrong, and I guess I should upload them again with the explanation on why they are in the public domain. --Lexjuris (talk) 01:46, 23 January 2018 (UTC)

@Lexjuris: What does this have to do with the status of a court order, etc.? The PDF was of an issue of Best's Review (www.ambest.com), a privately published magazine about law. - Jmabel ! talk 01:57, 23 January 2018 (UTC)

@Jeff G: How is a court document license property, esp if it is made specifically for the public domain as in court orders, opinions, notices by prosecutors? Is there some other way court documents are usually downloaded for wiki other than commons --Lexjuris (talk) 03:21, 23 January 2018 (UTC)

Lexjuris: You are confusing public records with public domain. LX (talk, contribs) 07:06, 23 January 2018 (UTC)

@LX: @Jeff G: Most public records are in the pubic domain. In the U.S., any work created by a federal government employee or officer is in the public domain, provided that the work was created in that person’s official capacity. So the notice to the court by a US prosecutor, and the order by a judge, are both in the public domain. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Public_domain#Government_works This also applies to filings in a case, available from the courts from various sources, such a pacer.com, unless it is a sealed document, see e.g. https://www.quora.com/Are-federal-court-case-documents-available-in-PACER-considered-to-be-in-the-public-domain --Lexjuris (talk) 07:56, 23 January 2018 (UTC)

As you note, but then seem to gloss over, section 105 of the US Copyright Act only applies to works of the US federal government. It does not apply to non-federal and non-US public records. Other jurisdictions have similar provisions, but they are in the minority. So no, most public records are not in the public domain. LX (talk, contribs) 09:53, 23 January 2018 (UTC)

@LX: Right, section 105 only applies to the federal gov., but obviously is not exclusive. Legal proceedings are in the public domain as well, with exceptions such as sealed documents, and documents that are already copywriter such as songs, poems books, that are the subject of a litigation. They are made public by the government as part of the long standing tradition that court proceedings are a public, not private event, may be copied and shared, and so are treated as in the public domain. See Nixon v.Warner Communication, Inc, 98S. Ct. 1306,1312 (1978)(“It is clear that courts of this country recognize a general right to inspect and copy public records and documents, including judicial records and documents.”) See e.g. the Records Project, which explains this in its court records overview: http://recordsproject.com/court/ as does the quora link I gave above re pacer.com, which provides court filings, and stands for "public access to court electronic records". There are limits that I note. --Lexjuris (talk) 13:58, 23 January 2018 (UTC)

Again, public record is not the same as public domain. One concerns access to information, the other concerns copyright. There are things you can do with works that are truly in the public domain that you can't do with public records in general. LX (talk, contribs) 16:07, 23 January 2018 (UTC)

@LX: It's agreed in this discussion that judicial decision, orders, opinions, works of the government, are in the public domain. That covers two of my uploads. You state that pubic record is not the same as public domain, but the question is what public records are in the public domain. More to the point, if a public record is made public for everyone is to see it, and copy and share it, then why cant it be downloaded to be shared on wiki?. Another comment below says court filings are NOT in the public, domain. But no authority is given. If someone says something here, it must be true? --Lexjuris (talk) 17:00, 23 January 2018 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Lexjuris (talk • contribs) 16:47, 23 January 2018 (UTC)

This is getting tedious. The fact that you agree with yourself does not mean that "it is agreed in this discussion." We have good overviews of which public records are in the public domain at Commons:Copyright tags, Commons:Copyright rules by territory and Commons:Copyright rules by subject matter. If by "on wiki", you mean Wikimedia Commons, then the answer to your question is that we require the content that we host to be free for anyone to use for any purpose. The fact that you can get copies of public records (and possibly even redistribute them in certain specific circumstances dictated by fair use, though that also varies by jurisdiction) does not mean that you are free to use, modify, redistribute and sell them for any purpose, including commercial purposes. LX (talk, contribs) 17:00, 23 January 2018 (UTC)
@LX: Read my comment. I said it is agreed that Government Work is PM - all the examples are works of a court - Government Work. --Lexjuris (talk) 17:36, 23 January 2018 (UTC)
Read it. Not all government works are PD. Not agreed. LX (talk, contribs) 20:19, 23 January 2018 (UTC)
There's an example of the original first Superman comic being published as part of a court decision. It's part of a public record, but nothing permits it to be freely used, and DC could sue you if you reprinted it.
What authority are you giving that court filings are in the public domain? I quoted from the US Copyright Office Copyright Compendium. Most court filings would fall under the field of "literary works" (section 703 "The Copyright Act defines a literary work as “works, other than audiovisual works, expressed in words, numbers, or other verbal or numerical symbols or indicia, regardless of the nature of the material objects, such as books, periodicals, manuscripts, phonorecords, film, tapes, disks, or cards, in which they are embodied.” 17 U.S.C. § 101." I quoted the relevant part of 313.6(C)(2) as to why certain works are public domain, but nothing in that applies generally to filings with a court.--Prosfilaes (talk) 17:20, 23 January 2018 (UTC)

@Prosfilaes: Okay, I looked at 313.6(c)(1)(2), right, no mention of court filings. Just gov works and edicts of courts and officials. And yeah, clearly things like comic books, songs, etc, would not not apply. Apparently court filings - attorney drafted documents - do fall under "fair use". http://blog.ericgoldman.org/archives/2014/07/republishing-litigation-brief-is-fair-use-white-v-westlaw.htm If Wikimedia does not allow fair use material, is there other ways to download for Wikipedia?--Lexjuris (talk) 18:51, 23 January 2018 (UTC)

@Jeff G: If I upload it improperly, without the proper tag, then I should upload it again correctly, right?--Lexjuris (talk) 02:45, 23 January 2018 (UTC)

No. The proper procedure is to request undeletion of the first upload, with an explanation of how you intend to tag it correctly. --bjh21 (talk) 11:23, 23 January 2018 (UTC) @Bjh21: Procedure for correcting tag to prevent deletion? --Lexjuris (talk) 12:56, 23 January 2018 (UTC)
For a file that has not yet been deleted you can edit the tags just like you can edit anything else. If there is a deletion discussion under way, it is a good idea to mention the change there as well. However, once deleted, the proper procedure is to request undeletion. - Jmabel ! talk 15:56, 23 January 2018 (UTC)
  • PDF files are in scope if they can be used as source documents for Wikisource. Submitting something to a court does not make it public domain, but judicial decisions aren't copyrightable. "As a matter of longstanding public policy, the U.S. Copyright Office will not register a government edict that has been issued by any state, local, or territorial government, including legislative enactments, judicial decisions, administrative rulings, public ordinances, or similar types of official legal materials." I can't see what's been deleted, so I can't see exactly how this applies.--Prosfilaes (talk) 16:20, 23 January 2018 (UTC)

Probems to open a file

Hello, if I try to open this file (File:Zeeman_p_s_doublet.svg), I see the file at first as normal, but if I try then to open it by clicking on the picture, I see only this line in my browser:

S 1/2P1/2P 3/2+1/2-1/2 -1/2+1/2-3/2-1/2+1/2+3/2

For Firefox shows other files correct I think there is a problem with the file itself, so that only the rough text is displayed. I thought at first to ask at first User:Pieter_Kuiper, who moved it to commons, but he seems somehow blocked, and User:Evgeny, who made it--I was not sure whether he is still active, but maybe he will see that he was mentioned.

I am not sure whether this is the right place to ask, so if I'm wrong please move it to the right place or tell me where to ask it instead.

Hey Odysseus1479, I do not understand what you exactly did but it works now! (I emptied my cache before.) Oh, and thanks to Jmabel, I didn't know how to make a link which wouldn't turn immediately into a preview.

Thank you to everybody who tried to help! --Lesendes Okapi (talk) 17:26, 23 January 2018 (UTC)

@Lesendes Okapi: I don’t know where the actual problem was; my solution was pretty generic. Opened in Inkscape, replaced the unsupported fonts specified (Nimbus Sans and Symbol) with Liberation Sans, removed the white background, saved as plain SVG. There was probably something non-standard in the original that made it incompatible with some parsers/renderers but not others, and which Inkscape rephrased in a more acceptable manner, but the other tweaks might also have removed it. Sorry not to have any better information as to what was going wrong. (I took the liberty of collapsing the browser output above.)—Odysseus1479 (talk) 00:17, 24 January 2018 (UTC)

Files display on local test of my website, but do not display when uploaded to a server

I downloaded 2 images from Commons to use on my website, and resized them. They work fine locally, but do not work when uploaded to a server. I checked the permissions (using command-i on the Macintosh), and the permission was set to read and write for me, but no access for "everyone". So I changed access for "everyone" to read and write, for testing. Still the images don't work. Meanwhile, images from Pixabay and Canva work fine. This happens on both Chrome and Safari.

You can see the problem at my test site, www.agetreatment.org/index.html (you do need to type the "index.html", as otherwise the domain is re-directed to an older version of the site). Just scroll down, and you will see that the last thumbnail image does not work. And if you click the title associated with that thumbnail, you will see that a larger version of the same image does not work - and also another image from Commons, called Gompertz.

Any ideas? I'm following the license terms, and can't think of anything else to try. — Preceding unsigned comment was added by 2607:FB90:60A4:FB13:958C:88DA:B281:10C5 (talk) 08:59, 23 January 2018 (UTC)

jj: Each of the following URLs produce error "403 Permission Denied" and "You do not have permission for this request".
http://www.agetreatment.org/JSJ2018.jpg produces a different "404 Error File Not Found". I do not see any indication of complete compliance with the license terms for the files you copied. I saw one link to File:Fluted Giant Clam (Tridacna squamosa) (6072982757).jpg, for which you did not satisfy the "Share Alike" clause of {{Cc-by-sa-2.0}} (section 4b of the actual license's legal code), thus violating the copyright of Bernard Dupont.   — Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me 13:33, 23 January 2018 (UTC)

Thank you. I fixed the file permissions (were 600, should be 644). On licensing, I changed the link text on my caption from "Image" to "Image {cc-by-sa-2.0}". Anything else needed to comply with the license? It seems that quite a few people are having problems with image file permissions. Since hotlinking is discouraged, I copied the image to the desktop on my Macintosh - and Wikimedia Commons files end up with permission 600, which means it will display locally but not on a remote server, which confuses less technical website creators. (Pixabay files automatically get permission 644, which works.) Is there a right way to copy files on Commons, to avoid the extra step with the command line? — Preceding unsigned comment was added by 2607:FB90:6102:25D3:DA2:C0CE:4D9C:3D1A (talk) 00:23, 24 January 2018 (UTC)

Help

Plz help. I took this photo and User Saqib has reinstated the tag. File:Arif Butt Sign.png Ma'az (talk) 15:35, 23 January 2018 (UTC)

  1. For a photo of something two-dimensional, the source isn't who took the photo, it's who created the underlying work. For a clearer example, imagine if it had been a full page of text from a book. Clearly the source is the book, not the photographer.
  2. On the other hand, I don't see why lack of source is a reason to tag this for deletion: I would think a signature is not copyrightable and should be {{PD-ineligible}}. Saqib can you please explain?
  3. (Also, in terms of categories, it's not a "sign" it's a "signature".)
  4. Perhaps we should turn this into an ordinary deletion request so that there is a more appropriate place to discuss this? If someone does that, feel free to copy my comments from here.
- Jmabel ! talk 16:10, 23 January 2018 (UTC)
@Jmabel: This is a crop version of a document which I suppose is copyright therefore I tagged it. Second if we are to keep it because it is PD-ineligible, I want @Ma'az: to give some credible source which confirms that this signature is indeed of en:Muhammad Arif Butt where it is being used. --Saqib (talk) 16:16, 23 January 2018 (UTC)
The fact that a copyright-ineligible element comes out of a larger, copyrighted document should not be relevant. Consider the case where we take a text logo from a copyrighted full-page ad. It doesn't matter that the ad is copyrighted if the logo can't be.
While you can challenge the validity of the signature, normally we assume good faith. Do you have some specific reason not to think this is the signature of the person in question? His name is typed there, so presumably it's either his signature or a deliberate forgery. Do you have any reason to think the latter?
Also, while I definitely think the uploader should state what document this signature comes from, failure to do so is not a reason for deletion. This is misuse of the tag that leads to deletion for lack of source. That is intended for when lack of source leads to copyright issues, and unless you disagree about this being {{PD-ineligible}}, there should be no copyright issue here. - Jmabel ! talk 17:03, 23 January 2018 (UTC)
I have fixed the things about the picture. Jmabel is it fine now. Ma'az (talk) 21:28, 23 January 2018 (UTC)
"Scanned from a document using camera" is still awfully vague. If you took the picture, can't you please say what the document is? - Jmabel ! talk 23:57, 23 January 2018 (UTC)

@Saqib: I am removing {{No source since}}, because that is intended for a cases involving a copyright issue that doesn't arise here, where the source would be needed in order to verify copyright status. If you want to raise other issues -- e.g. the genuineness of the signature -- please nominate for deletion in the usual manner, not something "speedy". - Jmabel ! talk 00:06, 24 January 2018 (UTC)

Could someone review my category edits?

Could somebody review my 2nd through 23rd edits from yesterday (Special:Contributions/J._E._C._E.)? I assumed that if an image was already in a subcategory, that it should be removed from its parent category. However, I found so many examples of images in both a category and one of its subcategories that I'm now doubting myself. Is it actually common practice to only categorize images in their deepest applicable subcategory or did I remove images from a bunch of parent categories for no reason? --J. E. C. E. Import from Arabic Wikisource

Hi, I'm an Arabic Wikisource admin and we want to upload the majority of our existing files in Commons. We want to export them mainly in categories like Category:Books_in_Arabic, Category:DjVu files in Arabic, Category:Book covers in Arabic‎, Category:Book pages in Arabic‎, Category:Scanned Arabic books in PDF‎ and probably create a maintenance category like Category:Files imported from Arabic Wikisource that need to be reviewed. Upload photo

Hello,

I would like to upload a photo of an English businessman to his wikipedia entry; it is a business profile shot, taken professionally but I am not certain of the name of the photographer, how can I upload this to his Wikipedia entry?

Many thanks Ella — Preceding unsigned comment was added by 78.198.226.69 (talk) 19:52, 23 January 2018 (UTC)

You'd better to know the name of photographer and ask them for permission otherwise it will be not possible to upload the image. Ruslik (talk) 20:09, 23 January 2018 (UTC)
What Ruslik said. More specifically, only the owner of the copyright can grant a license. If you don't know who that is, you have noone even to ask to get those rights granted. - Jmabel ! talk 20:26, 23 January 2018 (UTC)

Hi, im trying to upload a publicly available image released by the Bundesarchiv - Germany of Erwin Rommel standing infront of the Libyan Grand Hotel on the Grand hotel of Libya wikipedia page to write a section of its Historic Importance. Why must i go through such red tape to get this image on wikipedia when the source is clearly stated. The image is from 1941, and the original author is, possibly long gone. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Biomax20 (talk • contribs) 00:31, 30 January 2018 (UTC) --Biomax20 (talk) 00:30, 30 January 2018 (UTC)

  • Most photos from 1941 are still copyrighted. For example, in a country where copyright is for life + 70 years, that photographer would only have had to live 7 more years for the photo to still be copyrighted, which is generally more likely than not. - Jmabel ! talk 03:20, 30 January 2018 (UTC)

(Edit conflict)

  1. Do not simply give the website as source, but the actual page, if possible also the direct image link. With a reverse image search I found Field Marshal Rommel with Governor-General Italo Gariboldi (on Rommel's right), Libya 1941 and https://i.pinimg.com/736x/d2/53/dd/d253ddd4a9bd9c0a6d93be2554c0a42c--field-marshal-rommel.jpg.
  2. If a potential source does not mention a license and you are not sure, it is public domain, then do not upload it in Commons!
  3. Because of the watemark, but also with the reverse search I found the image is already on Commons under a CC license (which would be the answer to your question, then), in other words you’ve uploaded a duplicate of Bundesarchiv Bild 101I-424-0258-32, Tripolis, Ankunft DAK, Rommel.jpg where the just bottom watermark has been cropped.

Deleting an image - not sure if I did it right, and terminally confused.

https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Deletion_requests/File:Netroots_Nation_2016_moody_in_savannah,_Leslie_Salzillo_and_paradise50_(28363485071).jpg

I was asked to delete this by the owner, and I think I got the first steps done, but I'm not at all sure just what else to do.

Requested a delete, but the second and third and fourth pages that are supposed to go along with it left me wondering what was going on. Pity me, I'm too much of a newbie even to be sure I'm in the right place to ask. — Preceding unsigned comment added by SiabDK (talk • contribs) 05:08, 24 January 2018 (UTC)

@SiabDK: Yes, the situation does appear to be pretty confused. I've repaired it all for you. --bjh21 (talk) 11:16, 24 January 2018 (UTC)

How can i insert a page in existing PDF book?

I am from Tamil Wikimedia focusing now in ta.wikisource. There are few hundred incomplete PDF books existing in Commons For example, File:அயோத்தியா காண்ட ஆழ்கடல்.pdf. If i insert relevant page/pages in between the existing PDF book pages, it will be complete PDF-book.How can i do it? If it will be inserted in the existing pdf wth a new number like 16a( 15, 16, 17--> 15, 16, 16a, 17,..) there will be no need to move the OCRed/ proof readed pages. --Info-farmer (talk) 02:16, 25 January 2018 (UTC)

  • I'm pretty certain there is no way to do this within Commons: to Commons, the PDF is a monolith. You'd presumably have to download it, edit the PDF with any tool that has that capability, and reupload. - Jmabel ! talk 04:31, 25 January 2018 (UTC)

Flickr2commons

For the tool, is there a way to select the items that are not on commons? It currently gives all the photos, currently and NOT on commons. Artix Kreiger 2 (talk) 16:16, 22 January 2018 (UTC)

  • Supposed to be ("Show only files not linked from Commons") but, as I understand it, since a bot has been going around changing the http links to https links, and Flickr2Commons hasn't been updated to also check if a corresponding https link might exist, this is effectively broken. @Magnus Manske: is there any plan to address that? - Jmabel ! talk 21:59, 22 January 2018 (UTC)
    • You could manually do that, what I do is just run Flickr2Commons and then it will automatically state that it can't upload the file 📁 because it's a duplicate, this mostly necessary if you're uploading a batch of more than 380 pictures and you've reached your rate limit forcing you to re-select the batch again, sure it adds a couple of hours to the process but it's faster than manually de-selecting the filed yourself. You could otherwise try to select "only show files not linked on Commons" but that doesn't seem to work. --Donald Trung (Talk 💬) ("The Chinese Coin Troll" 👿) (Articles 📚) 11:18, 25 January 2018 (UTC)

Longley Farm

Hi. I am writing a Wikipedia article about a company based in Yorkshire called Longley Farm. I wanted to use a photograph one of their yoghurt tubs to go with the article and given that Yorkshire Tea and Henderson's Relish have their main items demonstrated by images of the product, I am assuming that it is ok. However, I thought I should check.

I have taken the image myself by buying one of their yoghurts, photographing it, and then enjoying the delicious yoghurty taste.

Thanks. The joy of all things (talk) 23:34, 25 January 2018 (UTC)

@The joy of all things: In general, packaging is likely to be subject to copyright (especially in the UK, which has a low threshold of originality. We have some more detailed guidance at Commons:Copyright rules by subject matter#Product packaging. Even if the picture isn't allowed here on Commons, you may be able to upload it to English Wikipedia under their rules on non-free content. It's quite possible that the Yorkshire Tea and Henderson's Relish pictures are also copyright violations and should be deleted from Commons, but no-one has got around to it yet. Thanks for checking: much better that you know the situation now than when you get a surprise notice of a deletion request. --bjh21 (talk) 00:23, 26 January 2018 (UTC)

Why do not I see the categories from 2010 to 2017?

Look at "Category:Taichung by year". Why do not I see the categories from 2010 to 2017? What I am pretty sure is that I have created the categories from 2010 to 2017.--Kai3952 (talk) 09:45, 26 January 2018 (UTC)

Well, Category:2010 in Taichung does indeed exist, but for some reason it doesn't show up in Category:Taichung by year. Possible explanations:
1) category caching issues: problem might solve itself if you wait a few days.
2) something might be wrong with Template:Taichungyear?

@El Grafo: What should I do with Template:Taichungyear?--Kai3952 (talk) 11:49, 26 January 2018 (UTC)
Sorry, I'm not much of a template programming person; I don't know if there's actually anything wrong with it. But since it seems to be responsible for the categorization of the yearly sub-categories that's where I'd start looking for errors if I were you. If everything's correct there, it's likely a server-side issue that might sort itself out on its own after a while. --El Grafo (talk) 12:06, 26 January 2018 (UTC)

I uploaded a photo that I had taken at an event. I shared it with another person at the event and they had given it to the person in the photo. When I uploaded it for an article, it was deleted because it was being used on the person in the photo's website. It has since been removed from the website and I would like to re-upload it. The site is not allowing me to do so because it says it was deleted. Can anyone assist so I can upload this photo? Thanks!--CultureGirl (talk) 00:29, 27 January 2018 (UTC)

@CultureGirl: given the previous publication, even if it’s not online any more, it might be best for you to file evidence of your authorship, along with your intended licence, at COM:OTRS. In general, instead of re-uploading, the normal procedure is to make an undeletion request. You could do that as well, but without an OTRS ticket you may encounter scepticism regarding ownership of the rights.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 01:33, 27 January 2018 (UTC)

Can I re-upload these same two images without the geocode tag along with some minor image quality enhancements? I can upload the new versions as separate files before the existing photos are removed.

There’s no reason to delete the erroneous versions AFAICT. It’s in the nature of a wiki that many pages have corrected errors in their histories. The latest version is always the most accessible, anyway, so there’s little risk of misleading anyone. In general we only delete revisions for copyright violation, gross offensiveness, revealing private details, or the like.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 22:10, 28 January 2018 (UTC)

  • Thank you Jeff, the images have been deleted as being out of our Project Scope, the deletion message on the talk page is the one that comes out automatically when I want to notify the user (option "delete and notify" with visual change), though the deletion log show the right rationale I'm sorry the automatic notification is not accurate, but I prefer a notification not accurate than no notifications, sorry.
