Copyright help regarding File:Ludwik Bałda.jpg

--Zfajger (talk) 09:33, 31 May 2013 (UTC)

It depends on the date and country of the first publication as well as on presence of a clear copyright notice if published before 1994. Ruslik (talk) 16:49, 1 June 2013 (UTC)

  • That's not a reason to rename a commons category, and besides, if that were the intent we would rename it in English: "Category:Manfred Günther (Psychologist)".
  • I fixed the commonscat in de-wiki. You just use {{commonscat|Manfred Günther}}. - Jmabel ! talk 15:37, 1 June 2013 (UTC)

Bildschirmfotos

Cannot use Wikipedia login data for Commons

Why can't I use my Wikipedia username to logon at Commons? I already have an account at German Wikipedia (my user name is Geoyo). I tried to use my Wikipedia login data here, but it fails telling me my username doesn't exist on Commons. But when I try to register my username with Commons, it says it's already registered in the central logon system. So I can't login and I can't create an account. There is not a Creative Commons license on the site, but here is their copyright statement:

The images may be used for non-commercial purposes only, for example to illustrate news items or magazine articles. If you wish to use any of the images in this library, please credit with the following: "© Copyright CO2 Capture Project www.co2captureproject.com"

How can this file info be changed so the graphics file is not eliminated? Thanks in advance.

--Meclee (talk) 20:14, 1 June 2013 (UTC)

Commons does not accept content restricted to {{Noncommercial}} uses. Please read Commons:Project scope/Summary, part of our first steps guide, to understand what type of content you can and cannot upload to Commons. That said, a simple area graph such as this does not really contain anything creative or original which could be protected by copyright, so {{PD-ineligible}} should apply. Uploaded images first

I have an extremely tight window with which to work on wikipedia this weekend. I have several photographers with whom I work, and after a few weeks of correspondence and deliberation over which images are best suited for wiki with one of them, he kindly released several of his photographs for me. I was able to upload three of them, and get one of them onto many articles across the wiki-world, before my time limit was up and I had to leave. I returned to finish my work tonight, and someone else had uploaded the other two images—one is an exact duplicate, the other a crop (which I was going to do anyway), both uploaded hours after mine were. At the risk of sounding like a huge baby, I'm really a little miffed. I can't help but feel a little bit like this my work was swallowed up by someone else. I was trained on English Wikipedia with a "no major rush" sense of editing. Otherwise, omg I would've put those images on their respective articles so fast without a care as to whether I prefer a derivative there or not and do it fast before anyone else gets to it first. So anyway, now my images are sitting on Commons, duplicates of someone else's images. Should I just shut up and deal with it? Or do I have some sort of right to tag their images as duplicates? I hate to be the jerk, and I know I'm being a baby, but after a stressful day of entertaining relatives, I'd liked to have come here in peace and quiet and do what I do without any surprises lol. Feel free to call me out. – Kerαunoςcopiagalaxies 05:46, 2 June 2013 (UTC)

I'm not terribly clear what you're talking about. What images, and where did they come from?--Prosfilaes (talk) 09:03, 2 June 2013 (UTC)
Hi Prosfilaes, sorry for lack of clarification. With a clearer head (not because of this situation, but due to being done hosting relatives finally!), I see that the other uploader made derivatives of my uploads and did not, in fact, upload exact duplicates from Flickr as I'd previously thought (one crop wasn't as noticeable late last night and I didn't even notice it). This is absolutely fair since that's the deal: I put images on Commons and if someone else decides to crop the images from there, that's what the license allows. It's my own fault for not working "faster", but there we go. Anyway, it's really not a big deal. Case closed :) Thanks! – Kerαunoςcopiagalaxies 17:16, 2 June 2013 (UTC)

Photos

Hello there, I want to upload pictures of actors, but to do so should I get permission personally from the website hosting the picture, or do I upload the picture and give credits to them — Preceding unsigned comment added by PraveenDxT (talk • contribs) 17:18, 2 June 2013‎ (UTC)

Hello, You must get the permission from the owner of the copyright. Often, that means the photographer. A permission from someone from the hosting website will work only if that person is also the owner of the copyright or its representative. Unless the photo is already offered explicitely under a free license, if you plan to ask a permission from the owner of the copyright, please follow the procedure explained at Commons:OTRS. -- Asclepias (talk) 18:07, 2 June 2013 (UTC)

Interwikilinking

I want to link to Toros Roslin's en-wiki page. Tried using the en: prefix, but it made the whole thing disappear. Help.

Also, I want to link to user World Imaging's Commons page (but in a discussion on Wiki FPC). What is the prefix for Commons?

TCO (talk) 01:10, 4 June 2013 (UTC)

en:Toros Roslin works for me. The prefix for Commons is "commons". I'm not sure what you have in mind when you say "World Imaging's Commons page"; could you give a URL, and someone can then provide you an internal wiki link as relevant. - Jmabel ! talk 03:26, 4 June 2013 (UTC)

I figured out the second half of it. But see my edit history. Was editing an author field and the prefix did not work.

This is NOT RESOLVED.TCO (talk) 04:07, 4 June 2013 (UTC)

Hi TCO. I do [[:en:Toros Roslin|]] (note the extra bar before the end brackets) and that should result in Toros Roslin. Also check out InterWikimedia links. – Kerαunoςcopiagalaxies 04:25, 4 June 2013 (UTC)

Could you explain your problem more in detail, please? Your upload log lists close to 200 files, each of which can be viewed on their respective pages. Your Listfiles displays a similar number of files. Where does the number 44 come from? -- Asclepias (talk) 01:30, 9 June 2013 (UTC)
If you're talking about the contents of Category:Photographs by Wiki ian, I'm seeing 146 files there whether I'm logged in or not, but I've seen cases where category contents are different depending on whether or not you're logged in. When this happens, it seems to be a temporary issue – probably some cache that's not updated properly. LX (talk, contribs) 13:50, 9 June 2013 (UTC)

Help with the copyright tags of these two images

Dear Sir/Madam,

I have uploaded the following two files:

File 1
File 2

They were originally obtained from this website.

If you read through the bottom of that website (in the comments area), you would see that I have left the following message to the author (under my username Joseph):

"I wish to humbly request for your permission for me to upload the those two sample pictures onto Wikimedia Commons so that it can be included in those Wikipedia articles regarding this Hakka Bible translation." (Posted on June 1, 2013 at 10:14 am)

The author's reply was:

Hi Joseph,
Thank you for your interest in the Hakka Bible and for helping us pass on this good news to the rest of the world. Yes, please upload the 2 samples in your wikipedia article. Thanks for asking first. As for the articles, there are a few little things that need fixing, but we can share via email. Paul (Posted on June 8, 2013 at 3:46 pm)

Therefore could someone help me place the appropriate tags on those two uploaded files? Thanks. Note: The author (Reverend Paul McLean)'s email is: paul.mclean@utoronto.ca --Hak-kâ-ngìn (talk) 23:48, 9 June 2013 (UTC)

Hi! Please don't crosspost the same question in multiple locations, especially not without indicating that you have. It tends to split up discussions and cause people to respond to questions that have already been answered elsewhere when there are other things they could be doing with that time. You've already received a reply at Commons:Village pump/Copyright#Help with the copyright tags of these two images. If you have followup questions, please continue there. I'm going to mark this section for archival. LX (talk, contribs) 20:16, 10 June 2013 (UTC)

If the image is not your own work, you'll need to provide evidence, that the copyright owner granted permission to use the image, and add a valid license template to the "licensing" section. It's not an easy topic for new contributors, you should read through Commons:licensing to get a basic overview (a list of some common valid licenses can be found in the "Well-known licenses" section of this policy). Copyright help regarding File:White-lies-big-tv.jpg

Hi, I wanted to add the cover for Big TV (White Lies album), which was published on the band's Facebook profile earlier today. This is the first image I have ever added to Wiki Commons and as you can see it didn't go very well. I wanted to add similar copyright etc. information as there is for the cover of their previous album (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Whiteliesritualcover.png) and upload it in smaller resolution, but I guess a simple copy/paste didn't work. It would really help if you refered me to some page with information on adding album covers and necessary tags. I would also be happy to delete that file myself, but I don't know how... ;)

Edit: Ok, now I have been refered to the "Wikipedia:Upload/Non-free album cover" page. I'll try to upload the cover there...

Thanks, Hearthstone - truehome at gmail.com — Preceding unsigned comment added by Modelearth (talk • contribs) 11:09, 5 June 2013‎ (UTC)

Regarding the first: you'd upload it like any other file. Regarding the second: you don't. We do not accept "non-commercial only" media. Lupo 12:07, 5 June 2013 (UTC)

This image is a screenshot of a copyrighted television program or station ID. As such, the copyright for it is most likely owned by the company or corporation that produced it. It is believed that the use of a limited number of web-resolution screenshots for identification and critical commentary on the station ID or program and its contents on the English-language Wikipedia, hosted on servers in the United States by the non-profit Wikimedia Foundation, qualifies as fair use under United States copyright law. Any other uses of this image, on Wikipedia or elsewhere, might be copyright infringement. For more information, see Wikipedia:Non-free content. --DOLBAOB (talk) 12:10, 5 June 2013 (UTC)

Commons generally does not accept fair-use content. However you can upload such content directly to some Wikipedias (Wikipediae?), for example to the English Wikipedia (more info can be found on the English Wikipedia at WP:NFC and WP:NFCC). GermanJoe (talk) 12:21, 5 June 2013 (UTC)

You should typically stay logged in for a month once you've logged in if you checked the "Keep me logged in" box. If you log in using another web browser or another computer, you'll have to log in there, but you won't have to log in again if you switch back. Problems staying logged in can be caused by problems with the cookies used to store information about your login session on your computer. These cookies are called centralauth_User, centralauth_Token, centralauth_Session, commonswikiUserID and commonswikiUserName. You could try deleting these and logging in again. How you get to them depends on which web browser you use. In Firefox, it's under Edit/Preferences/Privacy/Remove individual cookies. You might also want to check that your computer's system clock is correctly set, synchronised using NTP and not jumping back or forth, as that will affect the expiry of the cookies. 2) Are nudes allowed on the commons if the person is in public? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Danielteolijr (talk • contribs) 15:57, 8 June 2013‎ (UTC)

  • Depends on what country they are taken in, and probably other factors I'm not thinking of offhand. Different countries have different rules about whether merely being in public implies consent for a photo. As far as I know, nudity as such is not a factor (although a nude picture of someone underage would almost certainly raise other issues). If you want to be more specific about the particular photo (who, doing what, where), someone could probably give you more specific advice. - Jmabel ! talk 17:28, 8 June 2013 (UTC)

It depends why you want to delete it. If it is for an obvious reason, you can add the template Speedydelete to the page, with an explanation of the reason. If it is not an obvious reason, you can click the link "Nominate for deletion" in the toolbox column to the left of the image and explain the reason. -- Asclepias (talk) 16:43, 8 June 2013 (UTC)

'The sea of Japan' vs. 'East sea'

To whom it may concern : We are students from Republic of Korea and members of VANK, non governmental organization and also a voluntary organization. And also, we are the members of 'Hi-Korea', ChungNam Foreign Langauge Highschool's club. VANK consists of students who provide correct information about Korea. Recently I visited your website 'http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Map_South_Korea_de.png' and was quite surprised to find your maps of Korea and history.

I was quite surprised to find your maps of Korea and Japan still describe Korea's 'East Sea' as 'Sea of Japan', which is incorrect. Although many people in Korea try to correct this miss, still many sites describe Korea's 'East Sea' as 'Sea of Japan'. So I want you to correct your miss as soon as possible.

Using a proper name for the body of water between the Korea peninsula and the Japanese archipelago is not simply a question of changing the name of a geograpical feature. It is a part of the national effort by teh Korean people to erase the legacy of Japanese imperialism and to redress the unfairness that has resulted from it. It is an absolute mistaking to hear just one side fosotry and to blindly follow. If we leave these kinds of things alone, it causes serious problems that disturb the order of International society.

Once again, such an error on such a well-known website as yours comes as a surprise. Koreans as well as I want that every site has correct geographical name. Japan of sea is the remanant of Japan imperialism. Japan use their power to force world to use improper name like 'Japan of sea' I want you to know our as well as Koreans' mind. Korean really want everyone around the world know that it is the 'East sea' Thank you for reading my letter and we hope you to correct really. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 14.50.67.1 (talk • contribs) 00:06, 4 June 2013‎ (UTC)

  • Be that all as it may, our usual policy is to use common English-language geographic designations when they exist, and the common English-language name for this body of water is Sea of Japan. Similarly, and with similar political inconvenience, we refer to the Persian Gulf rather than the Arabian Gulf. - Jmabel ! talk 03:23, 4 June 2013 (UTC)
Actually, Wikimedia Commons does not really have a policy on what names to use on maps. Specifically, we're not in the business of centrally controlling the contents of the many projects that use the illustrations hosted here by modifying them without notice; see Commons:Project scope/Neutral point of view. In principle, you are free to upload maps with alternative names and advocate their inclusion on relevant projects, but don't be surprised if you find that consensus is in favor of the more established names. Wikimedia projects simply employ the terms most widely used in reliable third-party sources. Trying to use Wikipedia and related projects to settle naming disputes in your favour is not a particularly productive use of your time. LX (talk, contribs) 14:21, 9 June 2013 (UTC)

I feel there is need for a category Category:Nude or partially nude women in bondage. Very many images in Category:Bondage and its subcategories show nude or partially nude women in bondage. There is also the rather specific category Category:Women wearing high-heeled shoes in bondage but no supercategory Category:Women in bondage by clothing, so I think this new category deserves to exist as well. Urgent assistance in getting these images to commons

I need some help in getting these images for Commons:

Please sign four tildes (~~~~) after your comments. And why the urgency? Also it appears the images are fully copyrighted, so they cannot be uploaded to Commons at all. Did you try writing to them through FlickrMail? – Kerαunoςcopia

galaxies 05:33, 7 June 2013 (UTC)

  • The issue isn't that they are "fully copyrighted": it is that all rights are reserved. My photos on Commons are "fully copyrighted" but I have offered a CC-BY-SA license. Free-licensing does not make an image less copyrighted. When Commons participants speak this way, they inadvertently undercut efforts to get many of our efforts to get third parties to conform to our licenses instead of ripping off our work without attribution. - Jmabel ! talk 15:54, 7 June 2013 (UTC)
  • My understanding was "all rights reserved" isn't even used as a legally correct phrase anymore, and tbh, I do see a difference between "fully copyrighted" and "some rights reserved". I'm not saying I'm correct, but I certainly wasn't trying to undercut efforts to keep people from ripping off work without attribution which is going to happen no matter what I say. – Kerαunoςcopiagalaxies 01:56, 10 June 2013 (UTC)
  • w:All rights reserved doesn't mean anything any more. There was a long time when it was necessary to protect your rights in certain nations and naturally got ritually used even after all the signing nations joined Berne. "All rights reserved" was just another part of a copyright notice, and didn't mean anything more then that.--Prosfilaes (talk) 05:29, 10 June 2013 (UTC)
As well as Flickrmail, your could add a comment to the images asking for a better licence. While the images remain 'All Rights Reserved', I would move on and find alternatives to upload, either CC-BY licensed photos from other streams on Flickr (where there are over 5 billion images to search, try searches like this), or if it is military equipment you are after, then try searching the archives at defenseimagery.mil, where all the photographs are public domain. -- (talk) 05:39, 7 June 2013 (UTC)
I tried to do an e-mail, but I just get my e-mails bounced back. I'm asking if someone knows the site I mentioned and whether the e-mail address works. Also, I'm working on an article on the Pindad Komodo. I was able to send a Flickrmail for now. Ominae (talk) 06:01, 7 June 2013 (UTC)

Bild einbinden

--rimshottalk 11:12, 9 June 2013 (UTC)
Mögliche Ursache und dessen Lösung
  1. JavaScript im Browser deakiviert → JavaScript aktivieren
  2. Gadget Stockphoto deaktiviert → Activate the Stockphoto gadget now!

Copyright help regarding File:Ulrike Rosenbach.jpg

GermanJoe (talk) 07:37, 10 June 2013 (UTC)

Screen shot of Google Earth

As far as I understand from Google's copyright rules, they allow to publish on-line screen shots of their Google Earth imagery, as long as attribution is present, without prior approval and without payment. I cannot find any WP standpoint on this. Can I upload to commons? Or just to a specific WP language version? −Woodstone (talk) 07:10, 3 June 2013 (UTC)

  • Google Earth content is not acceptable here. Among other things, they don't allow derivative works in print. I'm not sure what other limitations they have, but that right there is enough to make it not eligible for Commons. - Jmabel ! talk 07:36, 3 June 2013 (UTC)
Yes, G also bought the map and picture material under license. It is not free. If you need to refer to this content, refer to the GEO loacation with the coordinates and the time of the picture. If the KML File supports this, go this way. --Hans Haase (talk) 08:45, 3 June 2013 (UTC)

So how about using it as fair use in a specific language version article? −Woodstone (talk) 09:24, 4 June 2013 (UTC)

  • That would be entirely a matter of policies in that specific-language Wikipedia, so you'd have to ask there. However, in the English-language Wikipedia, it would almost certainly be unacceptable, since presumably there is no good reason that no one could take an equivalent free-licensed photo. - Jmabel ! talk 15:38, 4 June 2013 (UTC)
Yes, some other countries appear a little retarded not having the fair use license by law. But check, if you can refer in this way making it legal arround the globe by refering the coordinates only eg. this article referes to it's locations. If you link to the pictures only while beeing inside w:en:WP:AGF there's no law against this. So check the source code to get it done in your article. When using G maps, rightclick, choose "What is here" and the coordinates are beeing displayed in the search field. Copy them to your aricle into your "coord" template and you are happy. --Hans Haase (talk) 11:10, 11 June 2013 (UTC)

Password Reset

Hello, I recently setup a new account and have since forgotten which password I use. I've tried to go through the reset procedure, but I'm not receiving an email with a new temporary password. Can you help? Please? My username is mark6davies and email is mark6davies@gmail.com.

Thanks, Mark — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2.101.250.101 (talk • contribs) 19:10, 9 June 2013‎ (UTC)

There is an e-mail address configured for User:Mark6davies. (If there weren't, Special:EmailUser/Mark6davies would say "This user has not specified a valid email address.") It's not possible for others to see which e-mail address is configured for the account, so it's impossible to say if it's some other address or there is a typo. Be sure to check your spam folder in case the e-mail is incorrectly flagged as junk mail. Beyond that, I'm afraid it's not going to be possible for anyone to help. More specifically: is it copied or do they both just happen to look the same? Also, can it be made into SVG? PiRSquared17 (talk) 01:12, 10 June 2013 (UTC)
We have literally thousands of maps in this style, probably based on some ancient file hiding somewhere within Category:Blank maps of the world. Most of them have extremely sloppy or misleading source, authorship and copyright information. In reality, it is likely that these maps are not eligible for copyright protection. Maps are often considered eligible for copyright protection, but mainly based on the originality of the coloring scheme, symbols and other details. Simple facts like national borders are not copyrightable, so a map with solid-colored landmasses and no other features is unlikely to attract copyright. However, tidying up the mess would be both Herculean and Sisyphean (as new files get added all the time), and asserting that someone else's "own work" and "I, the copyright holder" upload is not actually copyrightable takes a certain degree of boldness, so that's probably why this doesn't really get dealt with. Copyright help regarding File:Ellard A Walsh.jpg

The Hennepin County Library granted permission for this photo to be posted on Wikipedia as long as credit is given to the library, and I followed those instructions. What more needs to be done?

--DrCDCamp (talk) 05:14, 12 June 2013 (UTC)

See COM:Licensing, a free license must be given by the copyright holder (usually the photographer or his or her heirs). A permission for Wikipedia only is not sufficient. The photograph might actually be in the public domain, if the copyright was not renewed. If it is still copyrighted, the museum should have information about how it came to be the copyright holder, putting it in a position to make conditions on the use of the image. --rimshottalk 06:25, 12 June 2013 (UTC)

This file I copied off a US government Survey and do not know how to tag it properly. Please advise.

--Bdtull (talk) 19:01, 8 June 2013 (UTC)

This seems to be a "reprint with permission" of another work ("Révision systématique du genre Parachanna", and the illustration is even older and labelled "Günther 1861"). Assuming "Günther" is Albert Günther, the zoologist, the image is template:PD-1923 (published his work before 1896) and template:PD-old-90 (died 1914). You should also verify and add some details about this original author to the image summary. GermanJoe (talk) 23:19, 8 June 2013 (UTC)

Strange search return on "Liberty"

When I searched "Liberty icon" I got several returns. Then when I searched Liberty.svg and Liberty.png got a bunch of returns. However, when I searched just "Liberty" I got only this empty Category:Lady Liberty. If the word liberty is all over commons, why doesn't it come up in a search. Others might not think to add various modifiers or file extensions to find what they are looking for. Very strange. Carolmooredc (talk) 14:11, 16 June 2013 (UTC)

That is because of the current behaviour of the main search button. If it finds a category redirection page of that name, even when the category does not exist, it sends you to that redirection page instead of providing useful results. Given that all sorts of weird, erroneous and useless redirection pages clutter the site, this often results in sending you to a weird, unrelated or useless page. In this case, it sent you to this redirection page, which in turn sent you to another redirection page, which in turn links to another category (not bad, it can be worse with other search terms.) If you don't want your search to get hijacked to unexpected places and you want to actually get search results, you must go the "containing" section of the menu of the search button, or first pass through the search page. If you search for "Liberty" through the search page, it returns 11753 results. (The search page returns more results than the "containing" section, because it can include all namespaces). If the search is limited to the "category" namespace, it currently returns 495 results. If it is limited to the "file" namespace, it currently returns 9634 results. -- Asclepias (talk) 15:22, 16 June 2013 (UTC)

Malicious nomination for deletion: Help!

I seem to be the victim of a malicious 'nomination for deletion" for a photo that I know the copyright holder (Lee H. Letts) has given permission to Wikipedia to use. The user goes by ShakespeareFan00. How do I fight this? Marion Simons (talk) 14:44, 22 June 2013 (UTC)

There is nothing malicious about that deletion nomination. You uploaded what appears to be someone else's copyrighted photo of their copyrighted sculpture, claiming that it was your own work and that you are the copyright holder. Here at Commons, we only host free content, and we take copyright seriously. In order for Commons to host the file, that information needs to be corrected, and we need to verify that the real copyright holder has agreed to publication under a license that allows anyone to use the photo for any purpose, including commercial purposes. Permission for Wikipedia to use is not sufficient. LX (talk, contribs) 15:57, 22 June 2013 (UTC)

What do you mean by "icon or sidebar link"? Ruslik (talk) 18:45, 6 June 2013 (UTC)
On Wikipedia I have an icon to toggle the WikEd interface on and off up in the right corner of pages. And the preceding common.js Cropbot entry in my common.js had added a "crop" link to the sidebar so I thought that maybe that was plausible as well. Adding the code you gave me to my common.js has had no affect. I'm still getting the standard editing environment when editing in Commons. --Kevjonesin (talk) 18:54, 7 June 2013 (UTC)

API question : a good query for copyright ?

Hello everyone,

A question about the public API Wikipedia

I can not find the right query to retrieve the copyright information for an image.

How to retrieve information "allocation"? Here: By NSA, U.S. government [Public domain], via Wikimedia Commons Thank you for your help ! — Preceding unsigned comment added by 193.49.124.107 (talk • contribs) 09:18, 12 June 2013‎ (UTC)

Commons:Commons API and https://github.com/skagedal/usecommons is a start but this is not an official API. Licensing and attribution information are not saved in a database table; instead they are added in thousands of different ways. That's why these tools may be WRONG or FAIL. -- Rillke(q?) 10:58, 19 June 2013 (UTC)

I uploaded this image. Yes, I did not provide sufficient information. Hagop Hagopian is my father and I want this image or an image I find appropriate to be his profile picture. We have so many pictures of him and there are so many on internet. I would not be able to know who took his picture hence he was visited by so many and photographed by so many and ,many posted his images on line. Therefore, I'd better provide little information rather than make up a source. Please help me to leave this image posted and do not delete it.

  • If you don't know who took the photo, then it's not a suitable image for Commons, because the (unknown) photographer holds a copyright and you cannot release someone else's rights. Do you have a suitable photograph taken by a family member? The rights would be much easier to sort out and sign over. - Jmabel ! talk 01:19, 18 June 2013 (UTC)

See:Commons:OTRS. The photographer needs to email the license permission. If they put it on a site like Flickr with a CC-by license then we could just upload it from there. We can't upload any with the NC an ND terms of the license though. CC-by-3.0 or CC-by-SA-3.0 should be fine.--Canoe1967 (talk) 21:39, 18 June 2013 (UTC)

I've added a new data point to the source in File:Operating_systems_used_on_top_500_supercomputers.svg, I've regenerated the SVG output, and I'd like to upload a new version of the file, but I cannot; I get an upload warning, "This file contains HTML or script code that may be erroneously interpreted by a web browser.", which appears even if I elect to skip warnings. All your uploads seem to use the {{Copyrighted free use provided that}} tag with the requirement that "this image be properly credited to BioLite and is exclusively used on Wikipedia". That is not an acceptable requirement, as it means that the image is not actually free. Wikimedia Commons (this site) only hosts content that is free for anyone to use anywhere and for any purpose. We cannot accept content under permissions limited to Wikipedia (which is a different project – actually close to 300 separate projects in different languages), Wikimedia Commons (this site) or Wikimedia (the non-profit foundation that oversees the Wikipedia projects, Wikimedia Commons and several other projects). Screenshots of proprietary software cannot be hosted on Wikimedia Commons (this site). If the Wikipedia edition that you have in mind accepts non-free content under a fair use rationale, you may be able to upload it locally to that project. LX (talk, contribs) 09:30, 20 June 2013 (UTC)

Copyright help regarding File:Mark Langham.JPG

This photograph was take by Chris Smith. I want to credit him but I can use the photograph as I wish as I paid him for the privilege What do I need to do to publish this? Thanks

--Mark Langham (talk) 10:01, 20 June 2013 (UTC)

First, we need to determine who the copyright holder is. Normally, the copyright holder is the photographer. If the photo was commissioned by you as a work for hire (in which case you should have a written document stating that it is a work for hire) or the copyright was transferred to you in writing, you may be the copyright holder. Then, we need permission from the copyright holder to publish the photo under a license that allows anyone to use it for any purpose. Even if you personally have a license to use the photo, you would not be able to grant others a license if the photographer is still the copyright holder. In any case, since this is a professional photo, you'll need to send in a formal permission statement to our permission archive (follow the link for instructions). Please read COM:D. Thanks, --Ricordisamoa 18:00, 20 June 2013 (UTC)
They appear to be articles from copyrighted, non-free newspapers, so they should probably be tagged with {{Copyvio}} and speedily deleted. I'm not sure why you thought it would be a good idea to upload these to Commons in the first place. LX (talk, contribs) 19:02, 20 June 2013 (UTC)

Correcting an old image

Hi there, I'm new to wikipedia, and I'd like to know how I can correct an image on the site. I want to replace the following image: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/e/e9/CanadaVisaFree.PNG with an updated version of the same file (it's a map showing visa requirements for Canadians).

Any help would be really appreciated. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Constantwanderlust (talk • contribs) 21:37, 20 June 2013‎ (UTC)

Removing an image file

I want to remove an image file I have uploaded and replace it with a low resolution one. How can I do it? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Litsa - Walsall (talk • contribs) 15:21, 21 June 2013‎ (UTC)

  • If it is a recent upload (<7 days) and unused, then you can use {{speedydelete|User request, uploaded wrong resolution}}. Otherwise, I'm afraid the fact that you uploaded it is no longer relevant, and it would have to go through deletion review just like if you wanted to do this with anyone else's file. - Jmabel ! talk 15:59, 21 June 2013 (UTC)

Copyright help regarding File:2013 Alpha logo.jpg

Hi there,

The Alpha course logo needs to be updated because the organisation that publishes it, Alpha International, has recently updated the branding for it. That branding is publicly available here: http://run.alpha.org/sites/alpha.org/files/5705-alpha-logo-branding.zip

I've uploaded the new logo to here: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:2013_Alpha_logo.jpg but the licensing is currently listed as "The uploader did not provide sufficient information (a valid and suitable tag) on this media's copyright status. Unless the copyright status is provided, the file could be deleted seven days after the upload (21 June 2013)."

Should I update the licensing on http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:2013_Alpha_logo.jpg to use the same licensing as http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Alpha_logo.svg so that File:2013_Alpha_logo.jpg is not deleted after seven days?

Regards, Detridrum

--Detridrum (talk) 11:24, 21 June 2013 (UTC)

Actually, looking at it I think I should be uploading the image file to Wikipedia (via http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Upload) as opposed to Wikimedia Commons, does this sound correct?

--Detridrum (talk) 13:13, 21 June 2013 (UTC)

Yes. en:File:Alpha logo.svg is a non-free logo hosted locally on the English Wikipedia project under fair use provisions. Here on Commons, however, we cannot do that. File:2013 Alpha logo.jpg is a much simpler logo, and would probably be covered by {{PD-textlogo}} if it weren't for the fact that its source country is the UK, which has a ridiculously low threshold of originality. Although it says I can log in to Commons with another wikimedia account credentials, it won't let me. I have a Wikipedia account and I tried to log in to Commons using the same credentials. This should work automatically for new accounts. For older accounts, you will need to go to Special:MergeAccount on a project where you already have an account (e.g. en:Special:MergeAccount if the Wikipedia project you're referring to is the English Wikipedia project). Images of living persons - when is quality an issue?

On the English Wiki I just noticed someone added this photo to a BLP article, and I was wondering if anyone else sees a possible problem. Another editor removed it once before as a possible violation of WP:MUG, presumably because it's badly (and perhaps intentionally) distorted to cast its subject in a disparaging light. Thank in advance. TheBlueCanoe (talk) 23:55, 16 June 2013 (UTC)

(By the way, I didn't mean that the uploading editor distorted the image. The source is the Chinese government, and the subject is a high profile religious leader that Beijing considers an enemy, roughly on part with the Dalai Lama). TheBlueCanoe (talk) 23:57, 16 June 2013 (UTC)
Most of the time low quality images of common subjects can be deleted here. Since it may be the only image available then it will probably be kept. The debate on whether to include it in articles should take place on the projects that have articles. If it is a mug shot then en:wp guidelines/policies probably won't allow it in the infobox where it is now. You could try emailing his website to see if they wish to provide a different image. We would need the permission of the photographer to host it. --Canoe1967 (talk) 00:16, 17 June 2013 (UTC)
I just sent an email to his friends here in Edmonton. Hopefully we can get a better image from any photographer that happens to be near him.--Canoe1967 (talk) 00:36, 17 June 2013 (UTC)
That's enterprising—thanks a lot! We'll see how it turns out.TheBlueCanoe (talk) 00:43, 17 June 2013 (UTC)
Not answering your general question about quality, but about this file there is no evidence that this photo is free. In principle, a non-free image can't be on Commons. -- Asclepias (talk) 00:44, 17 June 2013 (UTC)
I find the license confusing and can't read the source. Is it a mug shot by the state and are those public domain? We could put it through DR and see if it survives.--Canoe1967 (talk) 00:53, 17 June 2013 (UTC)
It's not a mug shot, but an arrest warrant for 'disturbing public order'. (The PRC was trying to get him extradited from the U.S., but it was ruled he was a political enemy who'd committed no normal crimes that would warrant extradition). On closer investigation, the source website clearly states that the material is copyrighted. How do images get put through DR? TheBlueCanoe (talk) 11:29, 18 June 2013 (UTC)

On the left side bar there is a toolbox. Click the 'nominate for deletion' and follow the steps.--Canoe1967 (talk) 04:12, 23 June 2013 (UTC)

Complete beginners question sorry if its been posted

Hi I have been trying to edit my userpage to put in userboxes among them the UN one as I am a former UN staff member but no matter what I do I cannot get it to show all I get is either a red link or a line of text which equals what I put in I think I have understood you have to put the format User:Name of userboxbut I am completely stuck

Any help or guidance would be gratefully received

Regards

AkttuStakki04

You may have to interwiki link the boxes. Capilano Mall shows as red but Capilano Mall links to the English Wikipedia. See:Help:Interwiki linking. If the userboxes have templates on en:wp then just create new templates here and correct the links to make them blue. We have commons userboxes at Category:Userbox templates that may help.--Canoe1967 (talk) 22:57, 25 June 2013 (UTC)

Problem with Wikimedia commons search engine.

I uploaded the file Sqrt(3).png 2 months and 3 days ago and its description is still not in the search engine. No matter how long a phrase from the description I google search with quotes, it says there are no results for that exact phrase. Does it normally take that long for descriptions to make their way into the search engine? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Blackbombchu (talk • contribs) 00:19, 27 June 2013‎ (UTC)

It's not clear if you're talking about the search engine here or about Google. With a few words from the file description, the search engine on Commons finds your file easily. If you're talking about the workings of Google, I don't know. -- Asclepias (talk) 00:49, 27 June 2013 (UTC)

Copyright help regarding File:Sankar Datta.jpg

Hi this photograph was given to me by Dr. Sankar Datta. It was clicked by one of his colleagues and later used in a the file path given too. Its available in the public domain. Since I am a first time user I am not sure what is wrong ( as its a personal picture sourced from the Professor himself.)

--Arunbh2 (talk) 07:10, 28 June 2013 (UTC)

If the photographer is willing to waive their copyright and release the photo into the public domain, you'll need to get them to e-mail a standard release form to our permission archive. The standard boilerplate is for publication under a CC-by-sa 3.0 and GFDL dual license; you'll need to modify the part in grey for a PD release. LX (talk, contribs) 16:28, 28 June 2013 (UTC)

  • Sorry, it doesn't matter that it is a "proper illustration of the article I've created." If you don't have the rights to it, you can't upload it on Commons. If you believe you can get proper permission from the rights-holder, see COM:OTRS or COM:OTRS/ru for how to proceed.
  • Some individual-language Wikipedias have looser rules allowing some use of non-free files within that one Wikipedia; however, I'm not aware of any that would allow video, so that's probably irrelevant here. - Jmabel ! talk 17:49, 29 June 2013 (UTC)

Image deletion

I've never really done much (or any) editing on here, so I'm not sure how to go about this. The issue is that this image, ([8]) was placed on a Wikipedia mainspace article about the show/movie. The problem? The show and movie are both hoaxes. There is no show. There is no movie. A look at the deviant art account is pretty clear that she didn't draw any of this, as the "characters" for the show are recolors of an existing image that I've seen elsewhere, but can't place exactly at this point in time. I believe it's from one of the Lilo & Stitch movies/episodes or another Disney show/movie, but I can't place the exact character or episode. In any case it's a hoax at best and outright copyright infringement at worst and shouldn't be on the Commons. Tokyogirl79 (talk) 09:46, 30 June 2013 (UTC)

  • You can also see in this image where the edges of the bears show evidence that they were filled in and recolored by someone. Again, I can't prove that it's copyvio but I can state that it is a hoax image and is terribly misleading. Tokyogirl79 (talk) 09:58, 30 June 2013 (UTC)
I nominated the file for deletion citing your comment here as the reason.--Ymblanter (talk) 19:44, 30 June 2013 (UTC)
