Tizen logos

The Tizen logo should be updated: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Tizen_logo.png The new logos are here: https://www.tizen.org/about/tizen-brand-guidelines Could someone do this, I don't have any experience with imaging software ;)

Videos in different resolutions

I habe uploaded videos in different resolutions. I know from pictures that there are tags (I have forgotten which exactly), that say "there are copies of this pictures but in other resolution or modifications of this picture" (kind of a gallery inside the picture-discription). I would like to show that there are other resolutions of my videos. How to do this the best way?

What sense is in this tag "Split file"? I hoped that this will automaticly continue with the following part of my film. I want to upload more videos with 4 or 6 parts.

This file is bigger than the server is configured to allow."
--McZusatz (talk) 19:14, 1 January 2013 (UTC)

--McZusatz (talk) 22:35, 1 January 2013 (UTC)

Auch mit Up! hat es nicht funktioniert. "failed to upload."

Is it possible to upload an image without knowing the author?

I have been granted permission by a public figure to use an image of him under the Creative Commons Attribution-Sharealike 3.0 Unported License, but do not know who actually took the picture (a required field when uploading the image). He assured me that he owned the copyright on the image himself though, and I would much rather not have to send him another e-mail, questioning who took the picture. He seems to be a nice guy, but I have already had to e-mail him twice since I did not make it clear enough what he needed to do in my first e-mail (I have never worked with images on Wikipedia before) and do not want to continuously bother him about this. He may not even remember who took the photo anyway. Is it possible to still upload this image even though I do not know who created it? Even if I can't upload it to Commons, is there a way that I could at least use it in a few Wikipedia articles? --Jpcase (talk) 22:25, 3 January 2013 (UTC)

I would put author unknown, and copyright to his office. I doubt he owns the rights personally. He or the photographer can change it or whine later. You should be cya then.--Canoe1967 (talk) 22:31, 3 January 2013 (UTC)
Thanks for the reply. Sorry, but what do "copyright to his office" and "cya" mean? --Jpcase (talk) 22:37, 3 January 2013 (UTC)
Copyright owned by the Office of the Mayor of Fooville. Cya is is "cover your a@@", meaning your actions should be covered.--Canoe1967 (talk) 22:49, 3 January 2013 (UTC)

Tony, because these images were already elsewhere on the web, and the place where they were previously used doesn't give the free CC license. I believe the easiest way to sort this out would be:
  • Send an email from your company email address to permissions-commons@wikimedia.org as described in COM:OTRS. Explain that you uploaded 3 images that were deleted and (assuming the following to be the case) that you will be uploading more similar images with the same permission. When the process is complete, you'll get back a ticket number, which you can use at time of upload on such images in the future to clarify the situation.
  • It would also help to use your user page to indicate who you are and your connection to Hymac, so that it will be clear to people in the future how you come to have permission to upload any future similar photos.
But before doing this, give it a day & see if anyone else responds here with a simpler way to sort this out. My apologies that this gets a little complicated: it's hard to design a protocol that easily lets rights-holders upload images that are already freely available on the web while preventing other people from uploading the same images. - Jmabel ! talk 00:09, 1 January 2013 (UTC)

Photo notifications

Hello, I've recently been interested to upload some images but I noticed something interesting on the "Upload Wizard", "you grant anyone permission to use, copy, modify and sell it without notifying you". I don't mind having the image modified, used or copied but selling the photo without notification concerns me. I would think it's courteous to at least notify the user that the photo has been sold or taken to another website. Cheers! SwisterTwister (talk) 01:26, 1 January 2013 (UTC)

It is a courtesy to notify you. You can insist on attribution though. If you add a strange attribution they may contact you for a licence with a better attribution. Just set: Attribution to Canoe1967, @#%$-face, and his inbred sister/cousin.--Canoe1967 (talk) 04:03, 1 January 2013 (UTC)

Categories

I saw there is a page for Commons:Deletion Requests and other topics. I think there needs to be a Commons page about categorization. I know I can't be the only editor on here that is frustrated to see photos thrown into the Night category, if it is in London then put it in Night in London, if it is in New York then put it in Night in New York. I had another example of a category but can't remember it right now. Then there are flickr upload bots that do bad jobs on categorization. I have removed a bunch of photos from the Stars category that were actually an actor or singer, nothing close to an astronomical object. --Mjrmtg (talk) 02:45, 1 January 2013 (UTC)

Hide some files by the help of .css and/or .js

Is anybody familiar with any code that replaces any chosen file with something else? "Something else" could be another file, or some text or nothing at all. It is the use of some annoying smilies that some users want to remove. -- Lavallen 11:53, 1 January 2013 (UTC)

If the names of the files fit a pattern that doesn't also cover other files, or if you are willing to have a very lengthy stylesheet that covers them one by one, you can use something like

img[src="filename"] {visibility:hidden} // for an individual image file called "filename"

or

img[src*="substring"] {visibility:hidden} // for all files that contain "substring"

or you can use "{display:none}" instead of "{visibility:hidden}" if you don't even depending on whether or not you want the blanked image to take up space. See [1] for more info on attribute selectors - Jmabel ! talk

  • The provenance of the physical piece of paper is completely irrelevant, but I don't know the copyright issues for a photo published in a newspaper in Germany in 1927. Can someone else elucidate, or should we move this to Commons:Village pump/Copyright? - Jmabel ! talk 16:50, 28 December 2012 (UTC)
English summary: the photograph probably wasn't public domain at the URAA cut-off date. --rimshottalk 20:06, 28 December 2012 (UTC)

Logo of non-profit organisation

If I want to upload the logo of a non-profit organisation with approval of this organisation, under which license should I do that, considering that this organisation still wants to have the right to use it exclusively and would want to have the right to sue anyone who uses it inappriopriately etc. etc. Citypeek (talk) 10:49, 1 January 2013 (UTC)

The two goals are incompatible. They cannot maintain exclusive rights and approve the image's release under our required free (non-exclusive) licenses. Powers (talk) 19:46, 1 January 2013 (UTC)
  • It depends one what their notion of "inappropriate" use might be. If it's basically a trademarking issue, that's fine, but otherwise... what LtPowers said. Once you release under a free license you have very little control of how the image is used (although you can use a license like {{Cc-by-2.0}} which requires attribution). If they do want to do that, then see COM:OTRS for the proper process to give permission. - Jmabel ! talk 19:59, 1 January 2013 (UTC)

In the category there are 5 states listed, there are 2 other states but they have notices. The category School buildings in New Jersey says all photos should be placed in Category:Schools in New Jersey, likewise with School buildings in New York says all photos should be placed in Category:Schools in New York. So we have 5 states that have the category School buildings in and 2 states that don't want that category. I was going to create a Schol buildings in Georgia (U.S. state) category. Can administrators look into this? Thanks. --Mjrmtg (talk) 23:56, 1 January 2013 (UTC)

Free book created with animal photos from wikimedia commons

Hi I am a new user. I created 3 ABC books for children using animal photos from wikimedia commons. Where can I post the message below *** where contributing photographers will see it?

Dear contributing photographers,

Thank you for creating such amazing high resolution photos and making them available for publication! I have included around 80 of them in a series of ABC eBooks that I think will inspire children to love and protect nature.

I am not getting rich off your photos. The eBooks cost .99 cents and I get .35 cents per copy. Some of the money will be donated to support Wikipedia. Amazon allows me to give the ebooks away on 5 days out of 3 months. I have scheduled some book give aways and I thought ya’ll might want to have copies. If you find any attribution errors, do send me a message.

All three eBooks, ABC Animals: Birds, ABC Animals: Mammals, and ABC Animals: Insects, are FREE on Amazon.com on Saturday 1/19/13 and Wednesday 2/6/13. No Kindle? No problem. Kindle software is free and can be downloaded onto pc’s, ipads, iphones, android and blackberry devices.

ABC Animals: Mammals is also FREE on Amazon.com on 1/5/13, 1/12/13, and 1/19/13. I will be scheduling more ABC Animal eBook give aways every month.

Thank you all! Your photos made these eBooks possible!/ThelmaLou

At least, some king of list of images would be needed to find who war the photographers.
Anyway, you can find the uploaders in description page of every image, and then you can leave a message in each photographer talk page.--Pere prlpz (talk) 16:47, 2 January 2013 (UTC)

Attribution 3.0 Unported (CC BY 3.0) doubt

Hello!

Is it possible to cut part of a photo or image published under Attribution 3.0 Unported (CC-BY-3.0) in picasa and then uploading it to Wikimedia ? Thanks!--Duche de Cleves (talk) 20:11, 2 January 2013 (UTC)

Yes it is. It would be nice if you uploaded the uncropped version as well as the cropped version. (optionally both versions onto the same file). --McZusatz (talk) 20:31, 2 January 2013 (UTC)

Would I be allowed to upload this image?

I sent an e-mail to a public figure, asking him to release an image of himself that I found on his website under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution-Sharealike 3.0 Unported License. He responded saying that any images on his site could be used on Wikipedia, but did not specifically mention the Creative Commons Attribution-Sharealike 3.0 Unported License. Can I upload the image or do I need to e-mail him again and request that he specifically state that he grants permission for the image to be used under the terms of this license? --Jpcase (talk) 23:28, 2 January 2013 (UTC)

You need to get his attention for long enough to make him understand the difference between "for use on Wikipedia" and "Creative Commons Attribution-Sharealike 3.0 Unported License". For a public figure, that may be difficult. Does he have an agent, or secretary, that you could route your request through? Maproom (talk) 23:56, 2 January 2013 (UTC)
Thanks for the reply. Holding his attention isn't a problem. I have actually communicated with him several times and he always makes time to respond. The problem lies more on my end. I've never worked with images on Wikipedia before and probably did not explain as clearly as I should have. --Jpcase (talk) 00:57, 3 January 2013 (UTC)

The internet page http://msa.maryland.gov/msa/mdmanual/08conoff/ltgov/html/msa02768.html where I got this file states the following:

--Dothead (talk) 12:05, 3 January 2013 (UTC)

That term 'fair use' scares me. You may wish to email them and see if they mean 'free licence'. There is a page Commons:Licensing#Acceptable_licenses that explains it.
  • "All copyrighted material on Commons must be licensed under a free license that specifically and irrevocably allows anyone to use the material for any purpose; simply writing that "the material may be used freely by anyone" or similar isn't sufficient. In particular, the license must meet the following conditions...."

Problem with new image version

I've been going around updating images with vector graphics where possible, and after creating Euclid's_Orchard_(large).svg, I've uploaded a new version improving the colors of the picture. Unfortunately, the new version refuses to display anywhere, even after trying the ?action=purge (among other) steps mentioned here -- anybody know how to fix this one? Glosser.ca (talk) 01:18, 4 January 2013 (UTC)

First, you have uploaded the new version but you don't tell on what page. Second, if you want to upload new material, try it out on the File:Test.svg-page. It is the perfect testing ground. Third, check out my userpage: [2] under the heading "Important information". It gives important information about uploading svg-files to wikimedia. And last but not leatst, don't use layers and don't use SVG-versions that Wikimedia has trouble recognising (with Inkscape use "save as: plain svg"). Citypeek (talk) 09:51, 4 January 2013 (UTC)

Do you know Commons:OTRS? The copyright-holder should send his official e-mail to - permissions-commons@wikimedia.org - The text of his e-mail should be the standarized text in the black box of Commons:OTRS#Declaration of consent for all enquiries. --Bin im Garten (talk) 17:31, 1 January 2013 (UTC)

Hi, The author (and copyright-holder)of the photography Mandaçaias.jpg already sent the standard authorization to permission-commons, but the image still shows the status "insufficient copyright information". Does it take longer for the status to be changed, or is there anything still missing?

Theater copyright question

These questions came from finding this picture in an article. I understand that the photo is out of copyright, but what about the scenery and costumes depicted in the photo? Do the scenic designer and costume designer hold copyright over the deception of their work, like a sculptor does for work in a museum not out of copyright? If so when does the copyright expire? Would a lighting designer have the save copyright over their work as scenery and costumes? Does wiki have any standards for this?--Found5dollar (talk) 15:59, 5 January 2013 (UTC)

I think there is also de minimis and costumes are probably not copyrightable, but I'd like to read that from a canadian.--Sanandros (talk) 20:54, 5 January 2013 (UTC)
Ok, i understand that for that image de minimis might be arguable, but what about in general? there is a whole category, here, of set designs and for images like this, this, or this de minmis really can't be claimed...--Found5dollar (talk) 23:55, 5 January 2013 (UTC)

SVG thumbnails not updating (again!)

I'm having SVG update issues again, this time with thumbnails. The file in question is File:Moon diagram.svg. The thumbnails on file description pages refuse to update(I had to swtich to unusual sizes like 290px for the small thumbnails, which fixed things there), but the big thumbnail, and the 300px and 400px sizes don't change. Thumbnails outside of the file pages aren't affected. If I change the image size limit setting in the Preferences, the correct version will display for 1024×768, 640×480, and 320×240, but not the others. The wrong version shows up when I'm logged out. I've tried most of the stuff on Help:Purge. Thanks,—Kelvinsong (talk) 15:38, 6 January 2013 (UTC)

Proper license for cropped image

Hello, I recently uploaded File:Shkant-crop.jpg as a cropped version of File:Shkant.jpg. When using the wizard, I mistakenly said I'd created the image myself. Then I noticed that other cropped images, such as File:Jugglers Egypt (cropped).jpg, had a different types of info and categories. So I tweaked the info at Shkant-crop to try to mimic the Jugglers(cropped) info. But I wasn't sure exactly what I should put for the licensing info, since File:Shkant.jpg has a commons 3.0 licensing. Personally, I'd like to make the license as open as possible, but I imagine some restrictions must be "inherited" from File:Shkant.jpg. What would you suggest? Thanks -- Presearch (talk) 02:33, 7 January 2013 (UTC)

  • Yes, that's fine - so how can that be implemented in the file? Feel free to do that yourself if that is adequate, or if not, please tell me what I should put in the licensing field. Thanks! -- Presearch (talk) 07:21, 7 January 2013 (UTC)

Cannot watch video

Hi, folks! I just uploaded a WebM file and it says that it's 5'14 long, but it shows nothing and stops at 0'00. Is the file broken, is the player not working, or do I have to install a plugin? Thanks! --NaBUru38 (talk) 05:43, 7 January 2013 (UTC)

Not sure what was wrong. I used firefogg to convert the video again. I will try to upload a stabilized version later. Is this the highest quality and resolution you have? --McZusatz (talk) 11:42, 7 January 2013 (UTC)
Hello, thanks! The original file is a QuickTime (.mov) video with a 320x240 resolution, 30 fps, 5068 kb/s of video and 64 kb/s of audio at 8 kHz. The file weights 192 MB. It is quite sharper than your version, also yours loses a small margin of the frame around the edges. I could try to upload it to Google Docs, so you can convert it directly. I used Miro and selected SD, because a larger resolution would be a waste. Do you recommend another program? Thanks! --NaBUru38 (talk) 19:42, 7 January 2013 (UTC)
Miro does not scale up when HD is selected as far as I know. As you already have a google account, you can upload the .mov to youtube and let them stabilize the Video. If you have appropriate software on you Computer you can use it as well. For the conversion I currently prefer the firefogg addon for firefox. --McZusatz (talk) 19:57, 7 January 2013 (UTC)

I am way over my head - help deleting account

folks, Im sorry, I tried, I dont get it and dont have time to read and learn everything on the site. How do I delete my files and account? Tod

Hello Tod. There is no need to apologize and I hope that you enjoyed your time here. Here is your list of contributions. Since everything anyone does on this website is a contribution licensed for use to the public, there is not a process for deleting either an account or files. Please see Commons:FAQ#I_have_uploaded_an_image.2C_can_I_revoke_the_licence_later.3F. If you do not want to visit the site any more then feel free to leave as you like. If you want your userpage blanked, then feel free to manually delete the text you put there. Is that helpful? Thanks for trying things out here. Blue Rasberry (talk) 17:36, 8 January 2013 (UTC)
Hi Tod. You don't need to read and learn everything here, just follow these simple rules:
  1. Whatever you upload must have educational value.
  2. Whatever you upload must be either
    1. Your own personal creation, which you freely license
    2. Someone else's work, which has an explicit statement of a free licence.
I accept that copyright rules can be annoying and complex, but it doesn't look like you had any problems with it. As Bluerasberry stated, there is no process for deleting accounts. However, if you wish to have your images deleted, you can nominate them for deletion. But there's no need to, if you have no objections to us keeping them - File:The BC Salmon Run Tall Trees.jpg and File:Fraser River, Chilliwack, BC - Salmon Run.jpg are beautiful, and the fish ones are high quality, though obviously not so pretty. -mattbuck (Talk) 17:56, 8 January 2013 (UTC)

jee wiz Matt I cant even find where to reply... ha ha ha. I wanted to archive my art, I am an old guy now but I hvae been in Billboard Magazine for songwriting and have had my art and photography published over the years... I was hoping a site like this would allow me to be 'found' for cryin out loud. There are hundreds of todd brown's online oddly enough. It took me about an hour this monring to find you guys on this page. Am I educational? If I am, maybe you could help me find a helper...like is the user name important for searches? I put up links to flickr, is that cool? How do I get searched properly? I have 3 different locations over the years where people might search me... any ideas on how I can use this site better mattbuck? I find it very difficult to move around within my own page.

Well, we're not really about people promoting their own work, or really about the artists at all. It's more about subject matter, unless the artist satisfies notability requirements (someone famous perhaps, at least within some particular field). Educational is frankly a very loose rule - the images you uploaded satisfy it fine. A good guide is "could this be used in a wikipedia article about something", so yours could easily be used in an article about your local area. -mattbuck (Talk) 21:29, 8 January 2013 (UTC)

Camera Date on my most recent uploads

Can anyone fix the camera date on my most recent files? I believe that is in the exif data. My camera recently asked me to reenter the date. I entered 1/5/2013 but didn't realize that meant May 1st, 2013 (5/1/2013). After I saw the date on the recent photo uploads, I have figured out how to change the date on my camera to dd/mm/yyyy instead of mm/dd/yyyy. Thanks. --Mjrmtg (talk) 17:54, 8 January 2013 (UTC)

My late grandfather was an artist, I would like to upload information about his life and his art including photographs of his work. Am I able to do this? - unsigned

  • "Information about his life and his art" would mostly not be a matter for Commons, but as for photographs of his work, if they are within scope (either as being significant works of art or because they are useful as illustrations of what they depict) the question comes down to: are you the heir to the intellectual property rights to these pictures? - Jmabel ! talk 02:36, 9 January 2013 (UTC)

--Irenemc91 (talk) 15:19, 9 January 2013 (UTC)

  • I gather you didn't take the photo; since the work of art depicted is 3-dimensional, there is enough creativity in the taking of the photo that just freedom of panorama on the sculpture isn't enough. You'd need to get permission from the photographer (or other copyright-holder if rights have been reassigned). If you can get that permission, see COM:OTRS for how the photographer could indicate that permission to Commons. - Jmabel ! talk 16:34, 9 January 2013 (UTC)

I even reverted to the correct file version, but the timestamp and the file shown, don't match. (Is there a software problem?) Ihardlythinkso (talk) 16:11, 9 January 2013 (UTC)

There has been a sporadic problem on and off for the past few weeks of new versions of images not overriding previously-generated thumbnails of old image versions. You can't really fix it (just have to wait a few days), but one thing that sometimes works to get around it is to request an "odd" thumbnail width which was not previously requested (i.e. "221px" instead of "220px", "799px" instead of "800px", etc. etc.). Photo Licensing Confusion

I have a number of photographs that I'd like to share on Wikimedia Commons as I feel they would be useful for Wikivoyage pages and I believe their photos are now being uploaded through Wikimedia Commons. Often I find that travel photos are better with a human subject in them so I often take photos of strangers in their surroundings. It seems Wikivoyage and Wikimedia Commons may differ in their policies so I'm looking for some clarification.

As far as I can tell it's fine on both sites to publish photos under a CC license that include generic crowds, what I'm looking for is info on photos that include a noticeable human subject, for example a woman looking at a sunset.

Wikimedia Commons states in its upload wizard that photos are fine that include "people photographed in public places." While the following page on Wikivoyage states that "If a person is central to an image and identifiable, permission to publish that photo must be granted by the individual. A person is "central" if their removal or replacement would materially affect the picture, so this does not apply to crowd scenes or bystanders near monuments."

So I'm hoping somebody can sort this out for me. If I took a photo of a woman watching a sunset, in a public place, would I be able to upload it to Wikimedia Commons and license it (under CC) without permission?

Apologies if this is not the correct place to post this but I'm new to Wiki and my searches have brought up a lot of conflicting info. —Preceding unsigned comment added by DanB (talk • contribs) 04:39, 6 January 2013‎ (UTC)

Please see Commons:Photographs of identifiable people. -- Asclepias (talk) 05:10, 6 January 2013 (UTC)

Photo use

Hello,

I'd like to use photos I found here in an exhibition about the holocaust which is built in Israel for educational purposes.

How can I download the photos and do I need to ask for copyrights? if so, How do I do it?

Thank you

You can download them by clicking on them. As a rule all photos here are either public domain images or are distributed under w:CC-by-sa license depending on what is written on the image description page. Ruslik (talk) 18:33, 9 January 2013 (UTC)
To clarify what Ruslik said: there are actually several licenses used here; these are just the two most common situatinos. For the public domain images, you can use them with no legal requirements to give credit. The CC images will indicate on the page for each image whether there are attribution requirements and, if so, to whom to attribute the photo. Also, if it is CC-by-sa (and this is true for several other licenses), you'd need to make the terms of the license available somewhere to those who view the exhibition. If that's two onerous, then you'd need to contact the copyright-holder and make separate arrangements. - Jmabel ! talk 03:30, 10 January 2013 (UTC)

Problem at File:Battle of Long Tan 18 August 1966.png

I recently created a new version of this file: File:Battle_of_Long_Tan_18_August_1966.png. But since it had been transferred to Commons I didn't have the permission to overwrite it so asked AustralianRupert to do it for me. He has had a go but the changes don't seem to display and neither he nor I can get it to work. I also asked Nick-D and he also tried to help but still no luck. Essentially the problem seems to be that the current version is still displaying the old file. Under "File history" the thumbnails for the 00:03, 12 January 2013, 00:14, 12 January 2013, 00:17, 12 January 2013, 01:21, 12 January 2013, and 01:43, 12 January 2013 versions now look right, just not the current version. It seems to display fine in the thumbnail on my User page, but not in the Battle of Long Tan article. And not when you click on the thumbnail... If anyone could be of assistance that would be appreciated. Thanks in advance. Anotherclown (talk) 02:14, 12 January 2013 (UTC)

This is a problem that has been recurring off and on for several weeks. It will probably fix itself for any particular image in a few days; in the meantime, the way to work around it is to request an "odd" thumbnail size which was not previously requested (221px instead of 220px, etc.). Finding it very difficult to upload and use images.

Hi Wiki I am finding it very difficult to upload and use images for articles. I joined wikipedia with the hope that i could contribute to add more details to the articles particularly related to Marathi film industry. On internet practically there are not any images which are not protected under copyrights. So does this means that we will not upload images for all such incomplete articles. Is there any wayout from this? I feel otherwise it will be difficult to contribute to wiki then. Thank you WikiPank -- 05:40, 12 January 2013‎ User:Wikipank

To start with, images published in India before 1953 are out of copyright in India. Promotional materials or screenshots of recent movies are unlikely to be released under free licenses. If there was someone who did for Marathi cinema what "BollywoodHungama" does for Bollywood, then that could make photographs of actors available. Thanks for caring about copyright at all (many don't, and so create problems when they upload...). -- AnonMoos (talk) 06:01, 12 January 2013 (UTC)
If you live in the relevant area and can get to any film industry events, you may be able to take photos yourself. But short of that, free-licensed photos of contemporary performers are, indeed, often very difficult to come by. - Jmabel ! talk 09:37, 12 January 2013 (UTC)
Show people and professional photographers around the world are acutely aware of the value of copyright; hence they habitually reserve all rights except those they see to be necessary for publicity. Perhaps they will someday become similarly aware of the publicity value of releasing all rights for a few photos. Jim.henderson (talk) 12:06, 12 January 2013 (UTC)

Removal of the current file version (not the file itself)

I erroneously edited and uploaded a wrong file version (800px instead of full res) of File:Tres Picos del Amor.jpg. Since this reduced the files size I'd like to undo this upload but couldn't figure out how (in the history I obvoiusly can only change the metadata, I guess) ? Please, would somebody be so kind and remove the current version of this file? Thanks a lot, 0000ff (talk) 14:54, 12 January 2013 (UTC)

The quick answer is to just revert to the earlier version; I'll do it in a second, and it won't require any special admin actions... AnonMoos (talk) 16:42, 12 January 2013 (UTC)

New unified account, old accounts need deletion?

I have 3 other accounts, inc wikpedia and wikiversity. If I understand correctly, I can now just use this unified account for both. How do I delete the old accounts? I think I have messed this process up a bit, sorry... Lesion (talk) 15:05, 13 January 2013 (UTC)

You actually have a unified account, which currently includes your enwikiversity and commons accounts. However your account on enwiki is not merged to it. You need to go to Special:Mergeaccount and complete the process. Ruslik (talk) 15:55, 13 January 2013 (UTC)

1873 MAP

I would like to add an image of an 1873 map to a Wikipedia article which supports the content of the article. The physical 1873 map is in the "public domain" in the Library of Congress, however, the image of it was obtained from "Ancestor Tracks". Ancestor Tracks states that the physical map is in the public domain but that they took an "image" of it. They give permission to use the image "for personal use" if you are working on a "family history" project, or you may use the "map image" on one's personal website .... as long as one attributes the map image to "Ancestry Tracks" and that it is not used "commercially" in either case. I believe that my purpose satisfies these requirements but wanted to make sure that it was appropriate to move forward and upload the map without any problems.

Please let me know if I can upload this 1873 map to the Wikipedia article.

Thank you!

Yes, you can do so. And please use the {{PD-Art|PD-old}} licence template for the description. Thanks. --McZusatz (talk) 12:32, 5 January 2013 (UTC)
Are you sure about that? From what the OP writes, "Ancestor Tracks" allows their image to be used "on one's personal website". But anyone who uploads an image to Commons must allow unrestricted use of it, including commercial use. It do not believe that the OP has the right to grant that.
By the way - what 1873 atlas is this map in? I may have a copy of it myself, which I can scan. Maproom (talk) 15:22, 9 January 2013 (UTC)
"Ancestor Tracks" doesn't own the image, and has no right to restrict use of it. It's not that the OP has or doesn't have the right to grant that; it's that no one has the right to prohibit copying of the file.--Prosfilaes (talk) 01:18, 10 January 2013 (UTC)
The OP has stated that "Ancestor Tracks" created the image and has restricted its use. I wonder why you believe that they do not own it and do not have a right to restrict its use. Maproom (talk) 12:38, 12 January 2013 (UTC)
If it's from an 1873 atlas, they didn't create it. Copyright law in the US does not give people who merely copy a work the right to restrict others from copying their copy.--Prosfilaes (talk) 03:46, 14 January 2013 (UTC)

Refreshing image?

I'm having a real frustrating problem. I uploaded an image of a house that contributes to a National Register district here

, but I was unhappy with the image. I tried to upload another version of the same view of the same house in a photo with far better coloration, but when you go to the file, the first version still displays. I tried updating it again with no luck. The history of the file says that there are now two identical versions of the better image, and one of them is supposedly the current version. But, the first image is still the one that is displayed when you open the file. Also, the image is not updating to the newer version of the Wikipedia article that I'm drafting. It continues to reflect the first one. What am I doing wrong? (By the way, the image that shows up HERE is actually the correct one! But, if you click on it, it opens the file and displays the out-of-date one (as does my draft Wikipedia article).) -- 00:10, 13 January 2013‎ User:ProfReader

Good grief. I came here with the exact same problem, only with this image. Must be some kind of Commons-wide glitch. Does anybody know what's going on? A. Parrot (talk) 07:12, 13 January 2013 (UTC)
See section "Problem at File:Battle of Long Tan 18 August 1966.png" above. You can try odd-sized thumbnails... AnonMoos (talk) 08:44, 13 January 2013 (UTC)
Changing the size of the image doesn't change the top image on the photo's file. The article I'm working on is a list with lots and lots of small images. I'm counting on people's being able to click on specific images of interest to see a more useable image that is big enough to see details in. Without changing the image's size, my draft Wikipedia article now shows the most recent image, but when you click on the image, it opens the image's file where the first version is still the default.ProfReader (talk) 21:57, 13 January 2013 (UTC)

How do i Upload a picture in my article

How do i Upload a picture in my article -- 12:28, 13 January 2013‎ User:Praisim Peter

Do you mean that you want to insert an image into a Wikipedia article? If so, it is easy. All you need to do is find the image you want to insert into your article on Wikimedia Commons. Once you have that, open the image's page (by clicking on the name of the article or on the image itself). Along the top of the article, printed in jumbo-sized black font is the name of the image for editing purposes. Just block and paste that into your article. Lastly, place double brackets at the start and end of the file name. For example, I just uploaded a photo of an historic house. When you open the image, it has this written along the top: File:335 President - Jan 2013.JPG
If I want to insert that image into a Wikipedia article, I just put double brackets around its file name, and the image will replace that code. You can also insert some other code to change things like the image's position on the page and its size and things like that. For example, the number 150px designates a size I want the image to display at. Here is my example. If you want to see exactly what I'm talking about, you can click on the "Edit" button for your question and see the underlying code.

ProfReader (talk) 22:05, 13 January 2013 (UTC)

Though more likely you want to use [[File:335 President - Jan 2013.JPG|thumb]]. - 04:41, 14 January 2013 (UTC)

Richtige Lizenz für Logo einer öffentlichen Einrichtung

Liebes Wikiteam,

No luck. Can you (or anyone else) actally open this photo's file (File:20 Kenilworth - 2006.JPG) and report back what the main photo on display is? The newer, more colorful image is shown as the most recent of the three images, but the main image that opens in jumbo-size when you access the file is still the first, slightly squashed one with muted coloring. This is the same problem which has been discussed several times on the board above. You can't fix it (you probably just have to wait a few days), but you can get around it by requesting odd-sized image thumbnail widths which haven't been requested before (221px instead of 220px or whatever). It doesn't affect people in Europe as much as elsewhere... AnonMoos (talk) 01:15, 15 January 2013 (UTC)

United States State seals: large scale mistagging

I recently responded to a user's query on the Wikipedia help desk asking whether the seal of a certain state was out of copyright (being created before 1923, it was). Upon further investigation I discovered an appalling number of incorrectly tagged similar seals and insignia.

Some particularly egregious ones: from Xmap, "we release them into the public domain" (they're not yours to release); the use of {{PD-user}} where I doubt any Wikipedia user has created any of these seals; and the one mentioned in the query, fair use for a work created in the 1700s. I am also concerned about the use of {{PD-USGov}} and {{PD-retoucheduser}} because (1) I would assume the states themselves commissioned the seals in the majority of cases, not Washington, thus PD-USGov doesn't apply; and (2) faithful copies of works do not require PD-retouched; if the copies are not faithful, that's a problem unto itself.

Some seals are correctly tagged, and it seems the vast majority are tagged with some sort of PD-tag, though what kind is highly inconsistent. Now I am far from an expert on United States copyright law or whether there are any obscure insignia laws that apply here that might overrule the general PD-1923 so please correct me if I am wrong (I am also aware that some of these seals were created after 1923). I am requesting help sorting this out.

A list of state seals can be found here. This is a larger list: w:List_of_U.S._state,_district,_and_territorial_insignia. (Crossposted to Wikipedia Media Copyright Questions). Intelligentsium (talk) 21:20, 13 January 2013 (UTC)

First place, things like this are not traditionally copyrightable. There is a written description of the crest or flag, and anyone can create their own image. If that Seal of Idaho was drawn from a written description, the artist can release it into the PD. Secondly, any work before 1978 would have had to have had a copyright notice on all copies or it would have been PD in the US. Moreover, questions about copyright on works on Commons should go here, not there; I've removed the crossposting.--Prosfilaes (talk) 23:41, 13 January 2013 (UTC)
Should actually go on Commons:Village pump/Copyright. However, it should be mentioned that our tagging system is not too good at capturing the fact that there are often two sets of possible rights at play in any one image file (for example, in a photograph of a sculpture, there are potential copyrights on the sculpture itself, and also copyrights on the particular photograph as taken by the photographer)... AnonMoos (talk) 11:34, 14 January 2013 (UTC)
@Prosfilaes: Thanks for the heads-up; I wasn't aware of the all-copies rule. As to the possibility that users are drawing these seals from a written description, I hadn't thought of that but it doesn't seem too likely, and in any case we probably should be using the official seals. Do you have any comments on whether these should be standardised to all use {{PD-1978}} or {{PD-1923}}? Intelligentsium (talk) 00:39, 15 January 2013 (UTC)

This one: File:Leonhard Euler World Map AD1760.jpg. States that it was made in 1760 so the only place it has copyright is probably the time machine in my closet beside my tin foil hat. Most copyrights expire 50 to 100 years after the death of the creator.--Canoe1967 (talk) 20:26, 14 January 2013 (UTC)
Sacreative -- I changed the tag to the indicate the correct status under the current new system of copyright license tagging, {{PD-old-100-1923}}, which is just about the most ironclad indicator of world-wide expired copyright that Commons has... AnonMoos (talk) 01:09, 15 January 2013 (UTC)
I should have mentioned that any photographs taken of it cannot be copyrighted as well in most countries. If someone takes a picture of a painting, photograph, etc, of a public domain image without major enhancements, like colouring a black and white, then their image has no copyright because they added nothing of significant creative value to the work. See Commons:Threshold of originality.--Canoe1967 (talk) 02:56, 15 January 2013 (UTC)
I would say that most countries is over-stretching it. Commons:Reuse of PD-Art photographs has an awful lot of Not OKs and Inconclusives among the small sample there to say "most". The US and several other countries are clear, but most of the world needs more investigation.--Prosfilaes (talk) 23:13, 15 January 2013 (UTC)

  • Unless you designed the logo, I don't see any basis under which you can release its rights. The graphics are sufficiently stylized to be more than just use of a font, so it's not public domain, and unless the copyright holder granted a "free license" no one else can. - Jmabel ! talk 07:39, 16 January 2013 (UTC)

Wikimedia Commons (this site) is a repository of free media used by Wikipedia, other Wikimedia projects, and others. Commons only hosts content that can be used by anyone for any purpose. For Commons to host the images, the copyright holder would have to agree to publish them under a license that allows anyone to use them for any purpose. Permissions that are limited to Wikipedia, Commons or Wikimedia are not sufficient. If the copyright holder is willing to publish the images under a free license such as the Creative Commons Attribution Share-Alike license or the Creative Commons Attribution license, please document their permission using our standard form and send it in to our permission archive. Unless the copyright status is provided, the file could be deleted seven days after the upload (16 January 2013). Please note that Commons does not accept files claimed under fair use. It is suggested to read the intro of Commons' licensing policy, about essential information and (in many cases) about Internet images. If you need help ask at the Commons:Help desk."

If you are not the author (the copyright holder to be more exact) of the image, you usually need some kind of proof, that the image is really released in the public domain (unless it's PD by age or other legal reasons). Either a link to a license declaration of the author or better a written and verified agreement is needed. Use of a film poster for film which our company owns rights to

Hello, I would like to ask a question regarding the use of wikimedia commons in regards to use of a film poster for the film Spring Breakers, for which our company (Blue Sky Film Distribution/Blue Sky Media - www.blueskymedia.net) has distribution rights in territories: the Czech Republic, Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, Bulgaria, Romania and former Yugoslavia republics. I would like to use the poster for a Czech translation of the Spring Breakers wiki page (originally in English). Would this be allowed? We have the rights to use the film-related materials for promotional purposes (including presentation of the film on wikipedia).

Thank you,

Mr.JK — Preceding unsigned comment added by Mr paranut (talk • contribs)

All files on Commons are freely usable for any purpose. For some files, you have to attribute the author and publish any derivative under the same license. You may want to double check the copyright status of the files with the uploader. We may be able to give more advice if you indicate which files you want to use. Regards, Yann (talk) 14:58, 22 January 2013 (UTC)
Hello,
Distribution rights may allow you to use of the poster for promotion of the film but that does not transfer to you the ownership of the copyright on the poster. That means that you can not give away or freely license for the whole world the copyright that you do not own. And so, you can not offer the poster under a free license on Commons. To make a comparison, basically, it is similar for the poster and for the film. You own the right to distribute the film, but you do not own the copyright on the film itself and you can not freely license the film by offering it to the world under a free license on Commons. Similarly for the poster.
However, if the poster is included in the "film-related materials" that you "have the rights to use the for promotional purposes", then you can use it outside of Wikimedia as long as you remain inside the usage rights that the copyright owner has explicitly granted to you. Also, you can use some non-free works directly in some languages Wikipedias that allow such content under some conditions, but not on Commons. For example, the English-language Wikipedia allows some non-free content. To know if the Czech-language Wikipedia allows non-free content or not, you must consult the particular rules of the Czech-language Wikipedia.
-- Asclepias (talk) 15:56, 22 January 2013 (UTC)
ok, two more questions maybe connected to this: our company has a graphic designer, who is creating Czech version of the poster that will be used as official poster here. Will that be considered her own work (as it will be her creation based on rules set by the producers). If not, the wiki page Spring Breakers itself is using a picture that is protected by a copyright, however, since I am working on a translation of that page, with appropriate references to the original page, links to official website of the film and so on, is there a way I could use the original picture they have there for the translation? Thank you
Assuming you hold the copyrights to all elements involved in your new poster, you could upload that here. As for the Wikipedia article, the English Wikipedia allows limited use of fair use images where there is not and could not be any free use image (for instance film posters, pictures of TV characters, buildings not covered by freedom of panorama, etc). Not all Wikipedias allow this (so check the rules), and Commons most certainly does not allow fair use. -mattbuck (Talk) 10:01, 23 January 2013 (UTC)

Commons only hosts content that can be used by anyone for any purpose. For Commons to host the photo, the photographer would have to agree to publish it under a license that allows anyone to use them for any purpose. Photograph

Hello, can one upload a celebrity's picture taken by a photographer if the celebrity in the picture let him to do so and there is no way to communicate with that photographer since he is not a famous one? Yet, the photographer would most probably be pleased. Besides, this photography can be easily found on internet and perhaps was published in several different magazines, newspapers whilst referring to the celebrity in this context. By the way, it is just for the infobox section of the celebrity's article. Hope you can help me. Thanks in advanced! 78.167.29.150 14:05, 18 January 2013 (UTC)

  • Generally, no. It doesn't matter who would be pleased or not, how many people have ignored the rights and placed it on the Internet, etc. If I take a picture of you, I own the copyright of the picture not you. The only time this would change is if I formally sign those rights over to you (that is, in this case, if the photographer had signed the rights over to the celebrity). - Jmabel ! talk 16:33, 18 January 2013 (UTC)

Track Photo

How can I track the origin of a particular photograph that has been uploaded to your site? -unsigned

Sorry. Specfically the photo 96px-Hardtack_Umbrella_nuke.jpg located on your http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Enewetak_Atoll page. I have an original print of that photo that was declassified by the government with a rubber stamp on the back which indicates so. I would like to know how the photo on your site relates to mine. Thanks. — Preceding unsigned comment was added by 184.89.105.105 (talk) 21:58, 18 January 2013‎ (UTC)

This photo: File:Hardtack Umbrella nuke.jpg? It is somewhat difficult to track because it was uploaded to Commons eight years ago. The day after the upload, the uploader added [3] the mention of a webpage, without specifying clearly if it was the actual source of this particular file. But, since then, that webpage has become unavailable. With the help of the web.archive site, you will find this 2005.07.19 version of that webpage, which doesn't have this photo. Looking around the archive, you will find this 2005.04.15 version of another webpage from the same website, which does have this photo, numbered XX-32, released in the Nevada Site Office photo archive. This photo and File:Hardtack Umbrella nuke.jpg are obviously from the same original photo, although File:Hardtack Umbrella nuke.jpg appears to have been coloured. It may be related to the version that Getty [4] and Corbis [5] offer as rights managed. You can note small cropping differences between the versions. The Commons file has more of the photo at the bottom than the others. The www.nv.doe.gov file has more of the photo at the top than the others. The Getty and Corbis files have less of the photo at both top and bottom (although this is from their thumbnails). If you have a print with the rubber stamp, I suppose it probably looks more like the www.nv.doe.gov file. For more information, your best option is probably to contact the uploader, who is still active and ask him the details. -- Asclepias (talk) 00:54, 19 January 2013 (UTC)

Hi, I'm trying to place a link to this source webpage. I'm pasting the url between nowiki tags here:

Without the nowiki tags, Mediawiki cuts this url at the double apostrophe before the word MUSEE. I tried to shorten it in different ways, but it did not work. Move and replace issue

I did a bit of filemoving today:

I then either moved new files into their place, or uploaded a new file with that name. In all these cases, the original file still shows, although the description has updated. For many this is true of thumbnails and the actual image, in multiple browsers (so not a cache issue). I have tried purging and even reuploading, but it does no good. Can anyone help? You can see what file each ought to be from the flickr link. -mattbuck (Talk) 10:48, 23 January 2013 (UTC)

A mix of matching, partially matching and not matching images. I assume it's some kind of sync problem caused by the server moves and the thumbnail servers are not catching up properly. If you used some odd pixel numbers you'll get a newly created thumb from the new image but the main thumbs currently stay on the old image. --Denniss (talk) 16:54, 23 January 2013 (UTC)

Insérer peinture

Bonjour,

Equals signs in urls

Hi, I am an experienced template maker, so I am surprised to have run into a problem using template:=. My example was:

This is the standard recommended way of wrapping equals signs in urls, so what has changed, or am I missing something obvious? Thanks -- (talk) 00:15, 25 January 2013 (UTC)

Why do you need to wrap it in the first place? Ruslik (talk) 09:22, 25 January 2013 (UTC)

http://www.llgc.org.uk

Because I'm using it in an {{Information}} template and so the equals sign screws up the template. Note, this *used* to work and is the official recommended way of including urls with equals signs in templates, see m:Help:Template#Restrictions_on_parameter_values. I'm at a loss at to why this now mucks up a link. Thanks -- (talk) 11:21, 25 January 2013 (UTC)
Sorry, I do not understand. If you use named parameters in {{Information}}, you should not have any problems with the equal sign. Can you give a real example? Ruslik (talk) 17:10, 25 January 2013 (UTC)
I was trying to get the link to show this way in https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=User:Llywelyn2000/NLW/Credit_Template&oldid=88662730, however after embedding the same thing in {{LangSwitch}} it seems to be behaving itself. I'm unsure what the difference here is, presumably something in the way LangSwitch is defined but not the original parent. -- (talk) 17:24, 25 January 2013 (UTC)

Copyright help regarding File:Goose-force-feeding.jpg

The image is free, I wondered which one of the tags may be used for the image, because the image is tagged by the system as lacking copyright tag, I will be thankful for your help. Kiatdd (talk) 07:12, 25 January 2013 (UTC)

The reason you're having trouble finding an applicable tag is that it's most likely not a free image. The statement that you give on the file description page ("the picture has been used in several websites without any copyright notice, therefore it is a free image") is not sound reasoning. Recently created photos are almost always protected by copyright – even if there is no copyright notice. See Commons:Copyright rules by subject matter#Internet images. Ajuda en treure marques d'aigua

Hola sóc l’Edithsme i no sé ben bé si és aquí on he formular la meva pregunta. Si no és així si us plau indiqueu-me on he de preguntar. Ho he de fer jo?. Algú podria dir-me que és el que he de fer després de restaurar una imatge i pujar-la? Agraïda --Edithsme (talk) 15:36, 26 January 2013 (UTC)

Bonjour,
Cordialement, -- Asclepias (talk) 16:28, 26 January 2013 (UTC)

Molt agraïda --88.23.136.164 17:05, 26 January 2013 (UTC)

UserID wiki commons nicht in de.wikipedia.org

Hallo zusammen,

Image is not updating

Hello, I've downloaded a new version of this picture[7], but it's not updating. Can anybody help me? Thanks. Blaue Max (talk) 22:22, 26 January 2013 (UTC)

I am having the same problem with File:USGS Balanced Section.png. I uploaded a higher resolution image but it didn't update, so I assumed that I'd picked the wrong file and tried again, twice in fact. I then noticed that the most recent file was always the old version, while all the earlier attempts had become the high res version. I reverted the last change, which now says "Reverted to version as of 08:14, 23 January 2013" - but it's still the old version while the file shown for that date is the correct version so I really don't understand what's going on. I've purged the cache on the page many times, so that's not the issue. Mikenorton (talk) 00:00, 27 January 2013 (UTC)
I think there is a problem with the wiki software. I've have also purged the cache, but the problem persists. Graham Colm (talk) 00:06, 27 January 2013 (UTC)
I also purged the cache, without result.Blaue Max (talk) 00:16, 27 January 2013 (UTC)
Definitely a technical/software failure at the thumbnail server, even after deleting and undeleting a correct version both full version and most standard thumbs show wrong images. Test with the first image. --Denniss (talk) 00:46, 27 January 2013 (UTC)
How can we resolve this technical failure ? Blaue Max (talk) 10:46, 27 January 2013 (UTC)

The photographer needs to send permission to OTRS. See COM:ET for instructions. --Stefan4 (talk) 00:20, 31 January 2013 (UTC)
Wikimedia Commons (this site) is a repository of free media files used by Wikipedia, other Wikimedia projects, and others. The free part is very important – it's a founding principle of Commons that we should only host content that can be used by anyone for any purpose. Press photos are usually not free for anyone to use for any purpose. They are usually intended for journalists to use for publicity purposes only. As Stefan mentioned, for Commons to host the photo, the photographer would need to release it under a free license, such as Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike or Creative Commons Attribution. Using photos of painting

I have written a article about the Canadian painter Octave Bélanger. I personaly own many of his painting. Can I use photos of thoses paintings to illustrate my article?

Thank you

Presumably fr:Octave Bélanger? In that case no, photographs of the painting can not be uploaded to Commons, he died in 1972 and the paintings are still under copyright. Ownership of the physical paintings does not provide ownership of copyrights. Note that while Commons can't host images of the paintings, French Wikipedia might be able under fr:Wikipédia:Exceptions au droit d'auteur, you should ask for help in fr-wiki. MKFI (talk) 10:32, 27 January 2013 (UTC)
Or you might be able to get permission from his heirs; see COM:OTRS for the type of permission we would need. - Jmabel ! talk 04:39, 28 January 2013 (UTC)

Apparently the file cannot be viewed on the wikipedia page I want to put i because of a license problem. The image must be released into public domain or under the {{CC-BY}} license. Did the author do this? Ruslik (talk) 11:33, 27 January 2013 (UTC)
See COM:OTRS for what we'd need by way of permission. If French is the preferred language, you can see COM:OTRS/fr. - Jmabel ! talk 16:42, 28 January 2013 (UTC)

Recreating maps

Is it allowed to recreate maps out of books or is that reproduction and therefore copyright protected? It concerns a battle map from a book published in 1995. Citypeek (talk) 12:49, 28 January 2013 (UTC)

  • If the book is copyrighted, then anything based closely on a map in the book is derivative work, so that copyright would still pertain. In theory, the information content of the map is separable from the visual representation, and only the latter is copyrighted. So, you would probably be OK if you use a PD or free-licensed outline map taken from elsewhere and applied certain information you got from a book. The line between what is allowed and what is not is a bit unclear. You might take this issue to Commons:Village pump/Copyright, with a more specific description of what you mean to do. - Jmabel ! talk 16:39, 28 January 2013 (UTC)
    • Thank you, Jmabel.

I've uploaded new photos, but I need some help with setting their license. They are both were created by fans (fan-art), so they are based on copyrighted material, but they are a work of fans. So, I don't really know what license should it be, and if it's appropiate for Commons. One was published on deviantART and another was published on a private blog. Galzigler (talk) 23:01, 27 January 2013 (UTC)

This isn't even fan art: this is direct photography or (possibly in the second case) other reproduction of copyrighted materials. I believe these should simply be deleted as copyright violations. - Jmabel ! talk 16:41, 28 January 2013 (UTC)
According to the definition here it's quite the same - "unauthorised artistic representations of elements or characters in an original work". I don't understand some of the thing happen here, for example, I saw logos of trademarks are uploaded here - it's certain that it's copyrighted and may be used only under fair use. Meanwhile, I changed the license for the image File:Pai sho game board by blazerdesigns-d40h0la.jpg. If it's against the rules of Commons, change it of course. BTW, I got the permission to use this photo from the creator of this art. I hope it won't be deleted. Galzigler (talk) 17:16, 29 January 2013 (UTC)
The Win7 cards I would say have to go as copyvio. They are the same as I just checked on my Win7 hearts game. The boardgame could probably stay as no threshhold of originality by the original animation creators. They look like common clip-art symbols that would be far easier to use in the animated film than making board symbols from scratch. The deviart wood worker has given permission on the site the image came from. You may wish to have him clarify as cc-by though. Could the board game be considered as a photograph of a utilitarian object like a checkers set? Even though there are no set rules for the game, I imagine many are playing it anyways.--Canoe1967 (talk) 22:14, 29 January 2013 (UTC)
  • Re: "I saw logos of trademarks are uploaded here," there is no such thing as a "logo of a trademark". Any logo may, in principle, be trademarked, but that is a non-copyright restriction. Many are too simple or too old to be eligible for copyright. Can you give an example of the ones that you find confusing in this respect? - Jmabel ! talk 01:26, 30 January 2013 (UTC)

BMP

I was given a set of historic photographs which I want to import into Commons. The data all ends on .BMP, a format which is not accepted by commons. What have I to do? I have near to no idea about computers. -- Reinhard Dietrich (talk) 20:17, 28 January 2013 (UTC)

I expect you can find someone here who can convert the pictures from .BMP to .JPG for you, if you can email them to that person. I could even do it myself. But before anyone spends time on this, they will want to check that use of these photographs is not restricted by copyright. Can you tell us who took the photographs, and when? Maproom (talk) 21:01, 28 January 2013 (UTC)
--McZusatz (talk) 22:18, 28 January 2013 (UTC)
I would recommend converting to tiff or png as conversion to jpg leads to loss of quality. Ruslik (talk) 07:38, 29 January 2013 (UTC)
You are both right. I see now that .PNG will be better than .JPG. Maproom (talk) 19:00, 29 January 2013 (UTC)

Redundant PD tags?

This isn't a copyright issue, per se, so I'm posting here rather than the Copyright link given at the top of this page. Regarding File:The Gaunche, Turkish capital punishment.jpg, I became extremely confused by all the copyright tags I can use. First off, the image should be in PD because it was published in 1741 outside of the US. So I used PD-1923. The tag itself says that "the file must have an additional copyright tag", so I went hunting and found two more. Do I use PD-100 or PD-70? I ask because I found PD-scan, which I also added, but it seems to make PD-100 redundant, since it already mentions "life of author plus 70 years". I used scan because I asserted enhancements in the file description (I sharpened and removed spots). The image is a scan of a book made by Google Books, not myself.

So I suppose I want to make sure everything is proper and, really, should I (or anyone) remove the PD-100 tag? Thank you! – Kerαunoςcopiagalaxies 23:06, 28 January 2013 (UTC)

When a PD-old template with a higher number of years p.m.a is true for a work, then you can prefer it to a PD-old template with a lower number of years. I.e., 100 years necessarily include 70 years, therefore the template with 100 can be preferred to the template with 70.
The template PD-Scan is best used with a specified parameter. You can take one of the templates about the original work and fit it as a parameter into the PD-Scan template. I did that in the page you linked, as an example. The PD-Scan template accepts only one parameter, but the PD-Art template has many variations, some of which conveniently accept two parameters.

Upload image to Rembrandt/Paintings page

Hi, I am a mom who is somewhat computer savvy. I am trying to add copyright free images of Classic art which I have compiled. I have been trying off and on for over a year and always seem to run into a wall. I finally uploaded a Rembrandt, but it is on a separate page and not associated with the main page for this artwork.

Here, see:

My image page: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Rembrandt_The_Ascension_1636_Oil_on_canvas_Alte_Pinakothek_Munich_Germany.jpg

Where it should have gone: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Rembrandt_van_Rijn_192.jpg#filelinks

Please help, I have some stunning art images I would like to share, but just get so tired of trying to figure out how to get things on the page they belong! Thanks! ...is there instant messaging, by the way?

Hi, Thank you for uploading the file. It's actually a good thing that you uploaded it on a separate page. Commons often has several different reproductions of an artwork. Each file can live its life independently. If you want to replace the display of File:Rembrandt van Rijn 192.jpg with the display of File:Rembrandt The Ascension 1636 Oil on canvas Alte Pinakothek Munich Germany.jpg in a Wikipedia page, you can edit that Wikipedia page and just replace the name of one file with the name of the other file. For more information about how to display pictures in Wikipedia, you can see the page en:Wikipedia:Picture tutorial. When uploading reproductions of artworks, it is often useful to use the template Template:Artwork instead of the template Information. There are different forms of communication available. You can see for example Commons:Internet Relay Chat. -- Asclepias (talk) 00:46, 31 January 2013 (UTC)

You must attribute the work in the manner specified by the author or licensor

I would like to use a photo I found from the Wikimedia Commons for my thesis but it has this attribution statement but does not specify the manner of which I can use the photo... It states someone named Guswen is the author but there is no way to contact them. What do I need to do?

This is a file from the Wikimedia Commons. Information from its description page there is shown below.

Commons is a freely licensed media file repository. You can help.

Summary
Description English: The ancient King's Palace in Nyanza (Rwanda).

I see at the bottom of this submittal page the statement " You agree that a hyperlink or URL is sufficient attribution under the Creative Commons license." Is that all I need to do is have a hyperlink to the wikimedia commons website? Can someone help me out? Thanks, Sheila — Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.104.191.47 (talk • contribs) 01:51, 31 January 2013‎ (UTC)

Unless an attribution line is specified, it can be reasonably considered that the expected attribution is to the name in the "author" field. For example, for the photo King's palace in Nyanza, the attribution would be to "Guswen".
To answer your last question: The statement at the bottom of this page, here, is about the text on this page (or text on other pages of the website). It is not about the image files. Each file is under the license mentioned on its description page.
