Renaming Picture File

This picture file "Trinity Protestant Episcopal Church.jpg" is wrong. The name should be "First Evangelical Lutheran Church"

I understand someone with privileges has to rename it. Please do so.

Can I reuse the original name after the file has been renamed?

Copyright help regarding File:Learning Tools Interoperability.jpg

I have uploaded a file that I created myself - I would like assistance in attaching a license to it. I want it to be freely licensed to anyone that wants it. I want to make sure its permanent so that it does not get deleted. I'm adding it into my wikipedia.

Retouching image

I have an image which I have uploaded that really needs to be retouched, but the only image editing software I have installed at this time is MS Paint, and there's not much you can do with that. Can someone help me with Deep Creek, Florida Sign.jpg? PCHS-NJROTC (talk) 20:45, 1 August 2012 (UTC)

Hello.. I come from Wikipedia. Anyway, I wanna know what's up with hosting images on a local Wikipedia rather than on Commons. Also, is it [[Image:Example]] or [[File:Example]] when trying to put something in a Wikipedia article. Is one for pictures hosted on a local Wikipedia and the other for pictures hosted on Commons? You can use either File: or Image:, and both work the same way. For consistency, File: is generally the recommended version on English projects. Media hosted on Commons is included in exactly the same way as media hosted locally. If there is a locally hosted file with the same name as a file on Commons, the locally hosted file is used, and the only way to avoid that is to delete or rename the locally hosted file. The file type extension is part of the file name and must be included. —LX (talk, contribs) 07:25, 2 August 2012 (UTC)

To expand on that. Some images are hosted locally and on commons so that en.wiki can have some extra protection of those images. This generally refers to the images that are in the top 500 in usage. In addition, en.wiki hosts fair use images. If you find public domain or creative commons images hosted on en.wiki, you are free to move them to commons (if you can figure out how to make the move to commons helper work). Ryan Vesey Review me! 13:22, 2 August 2012 (UTC)

And to expand one step further: by "fair use images", Ryan means non-free images for which a non-free use justification has been stated. These images are used in en-wiki under the doctrine of fair use. I downloaded this file from flicker. It's under the Attribution-ShareAlike 2.0 Generic (CC BY-SA 2.0). So I am not sure what the problem is. Thanks

Wikipedia login doesn't work on Wikimedia Commons.

I had just logged into Wikipedia a few minutes earlier -- same account.

May I also comment that the brusque tone of the response is offputting. I'm trying to be helpful and make a contribution here, cleaning up an image, and I'm good at that. Sir or madam, thanks for your useful answer. Please understand that while I am a willing contributor to Wikipedia, I am not a professional software tester, and neither do I think that getting polite answers should be limited to people who have that qualification. I didn't give my username because 1) it didn't work and 2) I didn't think that would be necessary, because the problem, as I explained it the first time, was clearly that the system didn't automatically transfer it to Wikimedia Commons as the Wikimedia uploading help page said it would. There is a problem either with the software or with the instructions on that page. The user name was relevant information, because it helps us see things like whether the account exists here on Commons or whether there might be another user with the same user name (which can happen because unified login was introduced after several years of separate logins for each project). In this case, once you provided your user name, I saw that your original account was created a long time ago (which is relevant). This is why I recommended en:Special:MergeAccount. Youth Olympic Pictures and Licence

Hello!

I would like to add the photos of the Youth Olympic Games 2012 in the Commons. The photos are on http://www.flickr.com and http://www.gepa-pictures.com, this http://www.innsbruck2012.com/fotos to link to the website.

My question is can I add the photos and if so, what license?

Hello,

Most photos on the Internet have a copyright, and you need a written permission from the photographer. See COM:OTRS for details. Most professional photographers do not give such a permission. Some photos on Flickr are under a free license. Check for the CC-BY license, and beware that non-commercial restrictions are not allowed. Best regards, Yann (talk) 12:40, 4 August 2012 (UTC)

There is no User:Flickr bot on this project. Do you mean User:Flickr upload bot? The Gallery tool works just fine on that account as well. If you mean that the Gallery tool does not list files uploaded by Flickr upload bot under your account, that's because the Gallery tool lists files based on who uploaded them, and you didn't upload those files. —LX (talk, contribs) 09:18, 5 August 2012 (UTC)

It really would have helped if you'd signed your entry as instructed so that one didn't have to go digging in the page history to find out what "my account" means. I don't know if we normally honor such requests, but considering you only seem to be here for vandalism purposes, I guess you should be blocked. Category:Images uploaded ...

How does one create categories like Category:Images uploaded by User:Yjenith and Category:Images modified by User:Yjenith without manually editing/sifting through all my own uploads. Is there an easier way in which I wouldn't have to go through all my images and edit them or use HotCat? I want something like this to keep track of all the images I've uploaded especially the ones other people had edited/uploaded over and no longer shown in my file list. --KAVEBEAR (talk) 07:14, 30 July 2012 (UTC)

If you go to someone's user page then go to the toolbox on the left, there should be a user uploads button. You should just click that, there isn't a real reason to create a category page and I'm not entirely sure it is within policy. Ryan Vesey Review me! 18:34, 30 July 2012 (UTC)

@KAVEBEAR: If you have the list of files which should be in the category, you could always use AWB to add the categories (apply for AWB access at COM:RfR).

@Ryan Vesey: Actually, it seems to be a fairly standard practice - there's even a template to use on the category page: {{User category}}. The resultant category is supposed to be hidden, though, so you might not have seen them if you don't have "Show hidden categories" checked at Special:Preferences --> Appearance. --Philosopher ^{Let us reason together.} 05:04, 1 August 2012 (UTC)

In the Help it says -- Go to the image page. Under "File history", there is a link that says "Upload a new version of this file".

I have uploaded a new file and the new picture appears on the thumbnail, however, once you click the thumbnail and your redirected to the file page, the old image is still there. Can I change this?

Renaming an image

  • That said, is this really your own work? It's a rather professional-looking image, and I see you have no other uploads or contributions. I see an apparently identical image at http://www.idataware.com/gallery.php, where they claim copyright and do not credit you as the photographer. Hi Tylerol! Wikimedia Commons (this site) is a repository of free media used by Wikipedia, other Wikimedia projects, and others. Commons only hosts content that can be used by anyone for any purpose. For Commons to host the image, the copyright holder would have to agree to publish it under a license that allows anyone to use it for any purpose, such as Creative Commons Attribution Share-Alike or Creative Commons Attribution. If the copyright holder is willing to do that, please document their permission using our standard form and send it in to our permission archive. Sort keys in categories

Hi, I got into a discussion with User:PeterWD about the value of sort keys for categorisation. In this case it is about a number of helicopters made by Westland. Most of them are named Westland ... and are consequently listed in Category:Westland Aircraft under the letter "W" for Westland, Their names such as Lynx or SeaKing would make me feel that they should be categorised under "L" or "S" respectively. Correct license for French military insignias

Hi.

I have been looking at the files in Category:Military insignia of France such as File:BAPN.jpg. Most of these files are tagged incorrectly as {{Own}} as obviously the uploader did not create the insignia, just took a picture of it or scanned it. There's 6,851,702 uses of {{En}}, 31,080 uses of {{Uk}} and 1497 uses of {{Tgl}}, which by the proper naming standard of language templates should be {{Tl}}. I don't know how many misuses of tl for tgl there are, but with 1,500 uses of tgl, I'd expect a few.--Prosfilaes (talk) 02:33, 30 July 2012 (UTC)

Hmm, personally I'd prefer not having anything that links the brackets. It makes it a bit harder to read. On en.wiki {{T}} redirects to {{Tl}} allowing me to use {{T}}; however, I must remember to use {{Tl}} here. If people have a reason for {{T}} to behave differently I suppose I'll just live with it. This "small" inconsistency can cause many technical problems. Extra work for UpWiz & Co. Do you mean how to find pages on Commons which contain a URL beginning with a specific string? Unfortunately, Special:LinkSearch does not accept wildcards at the end of the URL – only the beginning. Special:Search/http://www.palaceoffice.gov.to/images/ seems to work, though.

Or do you mean how to find images on the Internet hosted under a URL beginning with a specific string? Public domain

The important question is why it would be in the public domain. If it had been taken by a photographer working for the United States Federal Government, it would be in the public domain according to US copyright law, but the works of most state governments (which I'm guessing this is) are not exempt from copyright protection. According to http://www.in.gov/core/terms_of_use.html (from which the image was taken), "the ... materials on or related to the Portal are protected under applicable copyright, trademark and other proprietary and intellectual property rights. In most cases, the content is owned by the state agency choosing to make its information available through the IN.gov service. I'm noting that the picture is of the State Treasurer. Without knowing anything about IN rules, it would seem to be perfectly plausible that this would fall under the "In most cases, the content is owned by the state agency," and that the Treasurer's office would be able to release the photo of its department head. Forward the e-mail according to the instructions at COM:OTRS and one of the OTRS agents should be able to deal with it. Graffiti

I just uploaded file:Tom Mix dendroglyph.JPG (and file:Tom Mix dendroglyph title.JPG) to illustrate en:Arborglyph, having seen that there's a lot of graffiti here. Now I see that there's a tag casting doubt on the copyright status of graffiti. Is there a policy? Did I make a mistake? It's complex. In the US, personality rights are generally limited to commercial exploitation of the person, so they don't affect Commons much. Graffiti is hairy; I'm not sure of court cases denying a graffiti artist copyright, but IIRC there was one in France protecting them. (It's important to distinguish between illegal graffiti and murals done in a graffiti style, which definitely get copyright.) Fortunately, in this case they're old US works; since they were in public and the creator made no effort to stop photography, they needed to have a copyright notice and be filed for copyright and renewed, which is absurdly unlikely in this case.--Prosfilaes (talk) 01:31, 6 August 2012 (UTC)

Lost search abilities

I use Wikimedia Commons frequently. Up until today, I have been able to search words that were not names of categories and still find hundreds of images that had the search term in their titles or descriptions. Now, I get no search results unless I type the name of a category. I cannot even locate the images I have contributed through a search. For example, "chromosome," "dna," "basque," "basque hen," and "silver ameraucana" are all searches I have performed recently that now bring up no results. Just Saturday, I searched for "Bielefelder" and found an image, but now it says, "There were no results matching the query." The categories do not contain nearly any of the images I was able to locate before using the simple search feature. What changed? Can it be fixed? Seems to work for me. Check at the top of the search results page to make sure that you haven't accidentally limited the search to a different set of namespaces than you intended. Hallo, die Bestätigung der Presseabteilung der Bank habe ich vorliegen. Leider ist mir aus früheren Zeiten noch im Kopf, dass Wikipedia einen speziellen Freigabetext hatte. Need assistance with copyrights.

I was told by another user, who reviewed my images/submissions, to just draw images similar to the ones submitted, but made myself, because they are simple diagrams. I did this for all diagrams, but when attempting to submit them, I have the option to use Wikimedia commoms, or just wikipedia. The problem I have is with the clause "inspired by others”. What I was told was to just draw the diagrams, based on the existing earlier submissions. I did that, but don't want to get slapped on the hands for submitting something close to a non-free work. The images are meant to go along with text in an article for which there is currently only a stub. The article I am working on, expands on that, and the images are to clarify what the article is explaining. The text by itself is enhanced by using these images. So based on this, I guess the question is related to what is considered "inspired by other". I did not invent the graphics I have now created myself, they are similar to the ones I found on the internet and submitted previously, the difference is that I drew them myself. The information inside them is the same, no copy/paste of anything, just drawn in a simple editor.

Will such graphics be allowed in Commoms? If not, how do I go about this if I can not use the submitted images due to non-free policy, and not use diagrams made based on them, even though I was told to do just that?

Looking at en:File:CCMP - MAC Protocol Data Unit (MPDU).gif, I really see nothing original or creative about it, so I would say it's ineligible for copyright protection ({{PD-ineligible}}). It's just a standard tabular representation of a well-known data structure. Not too "inspiring" really. :) If all the illustrations you have in mind are similarly simple, you could either upload the original versions to Commons or upload your own versions (preferably in SVG format rather than GIF). —LX (talk, contribs) 07:37, 9 August 2012 (UTC)

I created JPG versions myself, but with identical data. Not 100% identical, but really close, which is where my concern came from that they may not be accepted. A user on Wikipedia suggested I just upload them to Wikipedia only for now, so they would be evaluated later for move to Commons. I'm not sure what you mean by "give copy rights to the image". Copyright is the right of an author to decide who may use his work and how they may use it. In other words, taking other people's photos from the Internet and using them without their permission is illegal. Unless you can show that all the photos you used are published under a free license, we can't host them here. Releasing partial copyright

I'm a professional photographer with an image or two I'd like to contribute to the article on the copper mine in Kennecott Alaska, however I'm not willing to release all of the rights on the image. Is there a way to release some of the rights? No. The core of Wikimedia projects is free content, all content must be free to reuse by anyone, anytime, for any purpose including commercial purposes. Content that is not free is not in scope of the projects. Therefore its not a shame that such files cant be use, it just doesnt matter as the existence of unfree content doesnt matter for the projects. the Creative Commons Attribution 2.5 Generic license

One of my images (File:Kelenken artists impression.jpg) was nominated for deletion. This is merely because of a mistake on my side. I'm a commons noob and didn't know how to correctly fill in the "permission" box. The author of this image has stated that i can put it on commons as long as he is credited. Requiring attribution is a requirement of CC-BY license, {{Cc-by-2.5}} or preferably {{Cc-by-3.0}}, commonly also a requirement to distribute any derivative works under Creative commons is included (share alike): {{Cc-by-sa-2.5}} and {{Cc-by-sa-3.0}}. However, it is not enough for you to simply write in the image description that the author allows licensing the image under Creative commons; we need a proper permission from the copyright holder. A file is published under the Creative Commons Attribution 2.5 Generic license if the copyright holder states that it is published under the Creative Commons Attribution 2.5 Generic license. Photo on public Facebook page - is it okay to use if it is cited. Please read below

This is a pic of a game show host from his personal, yet open to the public facebook page. The comic/game show host expired on 11 August 2012 so I am unable to contact to ask for permission or to get crediting info. BUT, here is the link and if it is usable, the pic is here along with the announcement of his passing by a family member.

Sorry, but you are wrong. You are maybe right that you can use a picture under en:fair dealing/en:fair use or however you like to call it. But you cant upload it here. The scope of this project is to collect en:free content, not unfree content. Thats why fair dealing is forbidden here, thats why free content requirements must be fulfilled. Hi Meitalklachuk! Wikimedia Commons (this site) is a repository of free media used by Wikipedia, other Wikimedia projects, and others. Commons only hosts content that can be used by anyone for any purpose. For Commons to host the image, the copyright holder would have to agree to publish it under a license that allows anyone to use it for any purpose. Permission that only covers the use in a specific Wikipedia article or that is limited to Wikipedia, Commons or Wikimedia is not sufficient. You cannot choose the license on their behalf; nobody but the copyright holder can issue a valid license. If the copyright holder is willing to publish the photo under a free license such as the Creative Commons Attribution Share-Alike license or the Creative Commons Attribution license, please document their permission using our standard form and send it in to our permission archive. There are over 280 Wikipedia projects, which all have their own policies. I see that you're active on the English Wikipedia project, so I assume your question relates specifically to that. While English Wikipedia does accept some non-free content, a non-free portrait photo of a living person would not be accepted, as there is no reason it shouldn't be possible to replace it with a free alternative. Does Commons have a policy on spam in the image description? I probably just looked in the wrong places, but I couldn't find anything about spam. I'm concerned with the description of this image. Earlier in the day, on these pages, I explained that the photo was not taken by me. Nor did I anywhere write that I took the photo. I explained that this photo is from family archives, saved by my father. Insofar as my family is aware, everyone related to this photo is dead and it was never published. Please re-read. It is possible that you might have listed different information elsewhere, but no such information is available anywhere in this discussion, and the file information page claims that you are the photographer. If you are not the photographer, you need to identify the photographer and prove that you have permission from the photographer to use the photo. The fact that the image appears in a family archive does not provide any information about the photographer. Your father could have saved it because he might appear on the photo (in which case he isn't the photographer), or because he was a fan of the team. But the situation is as I describe it above: approx. 80 years old, no evidence that it was ever published, no information concerning the photographer or the circumstances under which the photo was taken (e.g. perhaps the photograph was purchased from the photographer), etc. We have no way of knowing some of the relevant facts. The main problem here is that the photo appears to be unpublished, which tends to give it longer copyright protection in the United States. Had it been published, it would be much more likely that the photo already would be in the public domain, but as an unpublished photo, there is not really any chance that the copyright has expired. Also see en:WP:NFCC#4: fair use on English Wikipedia is not applicable unless you can prove that the photo has been published or displayed publicly. There are also other requirements for fair use and I'm not sure how you were planning to use the photo. In the U.S., what is the law (apart from copyright or trademark) on making available or using an image of a living person who may be recognizable to a third party but who may not have consented to the use, including commercial use (Wikipedia or maybe Wikimedia requires that licensing not exclude commercial use), of their likeness, who may not be a public figure, where the image is to be used other than for an article about that person (it may be used in an article about an organization or a product), and where it may be possible for someone unknown to interpret the image and its context as an endorsement of the organization or product by person/s in the image?

Further, unless the law completely bars such availability or use for a likeness of an adult, is the law more restrictive where the person may be a minor or incompetent or may be under age 13 or as young as approximately age 4?

If news or some other noncommercial use is permissible, do all of the pages in all of the Wikimedia projects qualify?

If personal consent or the consent of a parent, guardian, or custodian is required, how is consent to be established? For example, is it to be postally mailed to a Wikimedia Foundation office?

First of all, nobody here is a lawyer, and if they are, they're not your lawyer. All you'll get here should be considered a layman's analysis. If you need actual legal advice, consult an actual lawyer. My understanding is that in the United States, there is very little expectation of privacy in a public place. Photos of people, including non-public figures and minors, may be used in a fairly broad range of contexts, including for-profit contexts. That, however, may not extend to advertising, other contexts that might imply some kind of endorsement on behalf of the subject, or that might defame the subject. I'm asking in order to determine what is acceptable within Wikimedia Foudndation projects, so finding my own lawyer would not help. I'm not clear fromn the pages linked to whether, for example, a school is where privacy is expectable by children. Whether or not it is, I'm not cleaer whether placing a photograph of a recognizable person in a Wikipedia article about a school would constitute a commercial endorsement of that school (even a nonprofit school) and therefore might require the person's consent. My inclination is to be cautious and assume such a photo cannot be used like that, but I'm not clear. Perhaps the relevant Wikimedia/Wikipedia policy pages need clarification, which is beyond my competence right now. Does this make my question any clearer? If not, I'll probably drop the matter. Ah. You might do better to ask at the Wikipedia where you want to use the photo. As an image repository, we don't control what Wikipedia or other reusers do, so we generally don't have to worry about the endorsement issue. I don't think Wikipedia would have to worry about it, since it is dedicated to covering things from a en:WP:NPOV, but this probably isn't the best place to discuss that. Trouble uploading

Some of the images that I have tried to upload today have generated a "Unknown error: "unknown-warning"." message. I can view these .jpg images on my computer in both Windows Explorer and Canon ZoomBrowser EX software. I have tried to upload them after downloading the files to my laptop, directly from the camera, from my SD card slot and via an SD card reader. Are there any known current glitches with images being uploaded. I shot the images today with a Canon EOS Rebel T3i.--TonyTheTiger (talk) 23:39, 17 August 2012 (UTC)

The most common cause for this is that the file name on your computer is something meaningless like DSCF0001. The error message is utterly unhelpful, and it should not even be an error at that stage, since you get to choose the Commons file name in a later step. The only workaround until this recently introduced defect in the Upload Wizard is fixed is to change the name on your computer before you upload. —LX (talk, contribs) 08:19, 18 August 2012 (UTC)

You should not copy thumbnails but the entire image. Use tools:~magnus/commonshelper.php so that files are moved correctly. If you move a thumbnail image, it causes a lot of trouble for other people. Anyway, I've moved this file now (see right). --Stefan4 (talk) 12:06, 20 August 2012 (UTC)

In general, if you don't want metadata showing, don't upload with metadata. You can remove it from a file (with exiftool or something similar) exactly as easily as someone else. In the specific case, my suggestion is that you request that the file be deleted; then you can upload again without the metadata. Image use

I would like to use an image from a press pack found on the page: http://www.sjm.com/corporate/media-room/media-kits/patient-conditions-and-therapies/pns-for-chronic-migraine.aspx The company allows use of it if a credit is written below it. The company says on the media relations webpage above "Credit any images and video as follows: Images or video provided courtesy of St. Jude Medical, Inc." I tried uploading it under fair use and ticked the box about it being from a press pack, but it has been rejected. Can this image be accepted under any circumstances? Commons only hosts content that can be freely used in modified or unmodified form by anyone for any purpose, including commercial purposes. Press images are generally intended only to be used in a very limited set of contexts in accordance with fair use. Because Commons is a general media repository, there is no specific context, so fair use content cannot be hosted here. Copy the file and upload it to your blog as you would with any other file. Read the file's description page on Commons. Follow the terms of the license and write the relevant informations (attribution, licensing, etc.) with the file on your blog. The "use this file" option is merely an intermediary gadget that suggests examples of format for those same informations copied from the description page. He tells me (in #37) to upload the file just as I would any other file -- which is precisely what I don't know how to do. How to upload files to your blog depends on a number of factors such as where your blog is hosted and what operating system you use. We probably can't really help with that part, and we definitely can't do it without knowing those things. Well, you never told us which files the question was about, but keep in mind that in many cases you also have to attribute the author and state the license under which the file is published. Delete or duplicate my en.WP upload moved here by another

Several files that I originally uploaded to English WP were moved to Commons by other users. The downside for me is that the files are no longer listed under my contributions/uploads in either location which I used for much easier tracking purposes separate of the Watchlist. I would like to get these back in my list which means re-uploading myself. Is it considered tacky or a faux pas to upload the exact same file on top of the existing one (even under these circumstances) or is the better (if possible) solution to ask for the files to be deleted allowing me to upload them fresh? Or is there another option? Somehow, "uploaded by self" speedy delete from English WP doesn't sound valid for this since the file was transferred by another user, but uploading the same file on top seems wrong. — CobraWiki ^{( jabber | stuff )} 19:02, 14 August 2012 (UTC)

• If you really care to have this show up on your contributions list, then, yes, you'll pretty much have to upload an identical version. Not notably tacky, but I'm not sure I see the point: you can watchlist it regardless, and the page presumably already acknowledges you as the original uploader.   • Since the files were all uploaded with CommonsHelper or another tool, the original upload log was transferred over, but this isn't about receiving credit. All of my uploads (so far) are logos. Need some help about the license problem of this file. As you can see that the file uploaded is a derivative work on Wikisource Logo and was created with the sole purpose of using it as a Logo for Assamese Wikisource which is in the pipeline. Same problem is with file, Wikisource-logo-as-5.svg. Initially I thought that the original logo is bearing license CC-by-SA, but when I checked the file, I found that the logos of Wikimedia Foundation are not in CC, so, I could not decide which license to apply. So, I uploaded without a proper license. Moreover, I am a bit confused about which license to apply to derivative works? You should use the same copyright template for File:Wikisource-logo-as-3.svg as for File:Wikisource-logo.svg, i.e. {{CopyrightByWikimedia}}. Unfortunately, the Wikimedia Foundation does not live as they teach, so unlike all other content on Commons, logos copyrighted by the Foundation are not in the public domain or published under a free license. Trademark rights would be sufficient to protect the logos from improper use, but the Foundation has chosen to reserve all copyright as well.

If you modify an image published under a Creative Commons license, the license for the resulting image depends on whether or not your changes are eligible for copyright protection and whether or not the original image's Creative Commons license has a Share-Alike condition. Among other things, handing you a picture does not indicate intent to release it into the public domain. • You haven't added licensing tags. You just added http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Template:PD-because. You didn't fill it out as a template, e.g. {{PD-because|reason goes here}}. The page still, irrelevantly, says "fair use regardless", which has no relevance to hosting on Commons, which doesn't allow images on a fair use basis.
• For this image to be OK -- which it may be -- you'd have to show that the photo on the cover is either public domain or available under a free license, and that the rest of it either does not rise to the level of being copyrightable or that it has been released under a free license. - Jmabel ! talk 15:20, 16 August 2012 (UTC)

Problem using the upload wizard

I've just experienced problems with the upload wizard, trying several times to upload a couple of different photos - each time being informed that "None of the uploads were successful." because of "Unknown error: "unknown-warning"." The most common cause for this is that the file name on your computer is something meaningless like DSCF0001. The error message is utterly unhelpful, and it should not even be an error at that stage, since you get to choose the Commons file name in a later step. The only workaround until this recently introduced defect in the Upload Wizard is fixed is to change the name on your computer before you upload. —LX (talk, contribs) 08:44, 20 August 2012 (UTC)

Thanks - it hadn't been a problem before with the 50 or so other photos I've uploaded recently, so I wouldn't have guessed that as the cause. Since I have over 13,000 digital photos (and maybe around 5,000 analogue photos that I keep track of using an alphanumeric system for their negs), maybe I'll have to resort to using pen-and-paper when I'm uploading in future, just so that my ageing brain can cope! Hugin

I tried asking this at Commons talk:Software, but got no response, so I'm trying here. Has anyone else had trouble with recent versions of Hugin? I recently upgraded to the current 64-bit Hugin for Windows & it keeps crashing on me. PD-1923 from Norway

I would like to upload an image or two from this book: [7]. Published in Norway in 1922. I believe that should qualify as PD, but the image upload helper only has an option for first publication in the US before 1923. I've had a hard time getting a clear picture from the commons policy pages. Specific details for this work: Sigurd Risting died in 1935. The book doesn't appear to include individual credits for the photos and maps, but I wouldn't count on Risting having created them all personally. It's required that a work be in the public domain in the US and in its source country, so pre-1923 is always a good thing. But the source country in this case is not the US which usually means it's a certain number of years from the death of the author; for Norway it's 70 years. I don't know about Norway specifically, but if an author is anonymous, which they look to be in this case, most of the life+70 nations have a flat 70 year term.--Prosfilaes (talk) 07:02, 19 August 2012 (UTC)

Es hat seine Frau Gerti Sippel gemacht. Das Gemälde ist noch im Besitz des Künstlers und von ihm gemalt und Signiert worden. Es kann unter Nennung des Künstlers weiterverwendet werden. Dies habe ich angegeben, aber es gibt den Hinweis das dies nicht ausreicht. Was muss ich nun machen, damit das Bild nicht gelöscht wird? Vielen Dank

Batch upload

I wish to upload a batch of around 60 photos I took at Wikimania 2012. They all have identical licences. The upload Wizard takes too long uploading 1 by 1, (3 - 5 minutes) on my slow connection, and I can't get Commonist to work (MacOSX 10.6.8). Are there any other solutions? Thanks. deleting a file

Hello,

I uploaded a file and then I changed it to fit my need. Now I noticed that I should change it again and each time I uploaded a different file of the same picture with the changes. How can I delete the other files so that when a person presses the picture on wikipedia doesn't see all the changes I've made? thanks. • For something like this where you have successively cleaned up the photo, it should be left exactly as it is. This lets someone in the future, when there may be better technology, start with the original. Deleting a logo

Dear Wikimedia Commons,

May I ask help from you? I was trying to delete a file which I uploaded into the Commons just recently. I uploaded the said image with file name Diocese_of_Imus_logo.jpg to replace a version of the logo which I myself uploaded onto Wikipedia on the wiki page of the Diocese of Imus. My intention was supposedly to upload a newer version of the logo (one that has a higher resolution), and it seemed like I did the wrong procedure.

This image appears to be a fair use image. Such images are not allowed on Commons, but may sometimes be uploaded locally to English Wikipedia at en:Wikipedia:File Upload Wizard. However, note that you are not supposed to replace low resolution fair use images with high resolution images on English Wikipedia. Again I am frustrated by user hostile language presented by a bot (Nikbot this time). So let me explain in english, the origin of this file. It comes from an already existing file I DID NOT CREATE File:London Olympics 2012 - Friday August 3rd in the Olympic Stadium 4959S.jpg. That was a wide shot of the Olympic Stadium. I cropped that picture to show the shot put area, to include with the wikipedia article about the Olympic Shot Put. The licensing of that original jpg is someone else's responsibility. The cropping is my original work, as it were. I do not know the ins and outs of your licensing of these situations, though I see them all the time. I can't claim any ownership of this. File:London Olympics 2012 - Friday August 3rd in the Olympic Stadium 4959.jpg is published under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution 2.0 license. That means that you can use it (or parts of it, as in this case) freely, but only if you follow the terms and conditions of that license. Apart from attributing the author (which you've done), the most important condition of the license is that "You must include a copy of, or the Uniform Resource Identifier for, this License with every copy ... of the Work You distribute", which you did not do. Using the photo without following the license is illegal and constitutes copyright infringement. I've fixed that problem and tidied up the file description a bit. Candidates for copying from Wikipedia

At times, a bot will affix w:Template:Copy to Wikimedia Commons to freely-licensed Wikipedia images. Now, the particular image I am seeing this at, w:File:What links here - not a standard special page.png, was released to the public domain by me. It's technically suitable for transfer, but its worthiness as an image is negligible beyond the technical question it was created to address. What is the general attitude at Commons towards this situation? Do you want this type of image, or would it be appropriate for me to mark it as unable to be moved to Commons, even though that's not technically the case? BigNate37_(T) 20:46, 17 August 2012 (UTC)

I don't see any harm in transferring it here. Ideally, the individual Wikimedia projects should not host any free media. • Sadly, physical possession of a photo does not mean owning the intellectual property rights. We'd need a release from the author's heirs (via COM:OTRS). Pontius Pilate received a warning from his wife Claudia Poculo in regard to his arrest. This possibly is the one referred to at Matt 27:18. In 1929 Katherine VanDyke of Detroit MIchigan translated it from Italian since it has been held in the Vatican for years. I would love to read the part about Pilate nly to receive it you must go to Issanus Press and pay for it! Pleas e help me. How to change an image?

I want to edit out the watermark "rawa.org" from [this photo]. Do i have to create a new file or can i edit the existing one? How? Tiana1987 (talk) 06:26, 21 August 2012 (UTC)

Note to other readers: the image in question is quite graphic.

In this case, it should be possible to crop out the bottom of the image without losing any essential parts of the image. Since this is would only be a minor crop, overwriting the file is fine. Poppaea or Claudia Octavia

The File:Poppaea Sabina.jpg would suggest this bust is from Poppaea Sabina, but from 10 wiki references to this image, 6 call her Claudia Octavia. Who are right, and if the majority, it should be renamed. I ask for discuss it at the File talk. ZackTheJack (talk) 14:46, 28 August 2012 (UTC)

This is a bust from the National Museum of Rome at Palazzo Massimo; the bust's caption state it's a portrait of Poppaea Sabina. All those images uploaded by this user are most certainly copyvios. Britanicus01.jpg, for instance, has been around in the net since at least 2000. I'll have a look on the others, but they are most certainly grabbed from the net or scanned from books and uploaded by this user as "own work". Done, nuked all 2008 uploads by this user, since many of them were proved copyvios and the rest were all ducks. It's telling how he was so keen to release others work as "Public Domain", but the last two uploads, who seem legit, are licensed under the most conservative license which requires attribution, and he even watermarked them with his name. Copyright help regarding File:Illés Relief.png

Hi,

I uploaded an image of the model of Illés Relief which was included in an Al Jazeera article, http://www.aljazeera.com/indepth/opinion/2012/08/201281115258302143.html, citing the Tower of David museum as the source. The model is not owned by the museum so I am not sure on copyright etc.

Can you advise?

Why would you upload an image if you don't know whether or not doing so constitutes copyright infringement? I can't see any reason whatsoever to assume that the copyright holder of the model and the copyright holder of the photograph have both agreed to publish the photo under a free license. Jonathan - it looks like the Al Jazeera picture won't fly (I'm guessing it's copyrighted by AJ), but there are a few other options which may work. There is a Category of images of the model at Category:19th-century model of Jerusalem. (We should actually rename that category to be more specific). I also just added File:Illés Relief.jpg which is a picture I took last December. None of these are obviously as good as the AJ picture (I for one put the "amateur" in "amateur Photographer" but they're better than nothing). --Bachrach44 (talk) 17:00, 13 August 2012 (UTC)

Gerald Ford Presidential Museum

I'm new!! and making tons of mistakes - I appreciate all the help ... so new that I'm not even sure where to find any responses to my questions.

here's my first question:

I need to change Category:Collections of the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Museum to Category:Collections of the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Library/Museum as I begin to categorize the photographs in our facility. Can someone do a batch change for me, or will I need to update all the already uploaded images one by one?

my second question is about licensing - the one I'm using (the Federal one) does not accurately reflect that we own the materials but that we DID NOT create the materials .. any movement on refining the federal licensing language? Bdcousineau (talk) 16:22, 16 August 2012 (UTC)

Many separate points here, and I won't be addressing them all:

• Physical ownership of the materials is irrelevant to intellectual property rights, and need not be recorded here (though museum accession numbers are always welcome). If they are "work prepared by an officer or employee of the United States Government as part of that person’s official duties" that's all we really need, though it might be good to make up a separate template comparable to, for example, {{PD-USGov-NASA}}
• As long as you created the photos and the underlying object is not copyrightable (or is also federal gov't work), that's all we need. For example, a gun is not copyrightable; a photograph of a gun is.
• There are quite a few ways to perform a batch task. Do you not have the "Perform batch task" link on your UI?

What does this error message mean?

Here is an error message I keep getting whenever I try to upload a new version of a map:

"Upload warning

The file "mwstore://local-multiwrite/local-public/e/ee/CartogramPresidentialCounty1896.gif" is in an inconsistent state within the internal storage backends"

I uploaded it in the same manner as my other uploads. I've even tried renaming the file before uploading it. Is there any way to get around this? Thanks.--Tilden76 (talk) 23:04, 18 August 2012 (UTC)

WebCite failing - is commons' apache misconfigured?

Convoluted upload history

I've been reviewing Category:Media requiring a split up and I've encountered a particularly sticky problem.

File:Arellano U Plaridel Hall.jpg is the file in question. It was originally uploaded to en.wikipedia by en:User:DragosteaDinTei on 31 December 2010. It was transferred to Commons by User:MGA73bot2 on 12 January 2011. On 4 March 2011, User:DragosteaDinTei (presumably the original author) uploaded a different file, overwriting the existing one. At the time of overwriting, no copyright information (such as creation date) was provided, just a very bare-bones description. The file is currently in use on en:Arellano University, where its caption refers to the new version, and definitely not the old one.

My conundrum is this. If I split the files, as requested by User:Magog the Ogre six months ago, I have no copyright information to place on the description page of the new file. If I instead revert to the old file, the image is no longer accurately captioned on en.wikipedia.

(N.B.: I realize the file is under review for deletion, but I would still like to know how to handle similar situations in the future.)

I have been looking a bit at the corresponding English Wikipedia file split category in the past, proposing some images for deletion and moving other images to Commons.

Sometimes, someone has overwritten a file uploaded by someone else without altering the file information page. If the file information page hasn't been edited, I have assumed that the user hasn't provided any source, and I'm not sure if the user ever has visited a page where the user approves the licence. Thus, when this has happened, I have proposed files for deletion as potentially unfree.

In this case, the file has been overwritten by the same person as the one who uploaded the initial file. Maybe it would be safe to assume that both files are meant to have the same file information page? Also: User:DragosteaDinTei edited the file information page 2½ minute before uploading the new image, and the edited version of the file information page could maybe be seen as a file information page for the new file. Smithsonian pictures

Would Smithsonian pictures be considered a U.S. government source, therefore the images are copyright free? Example is a picture I would like to use, but don't know IF there is a copyright on it: http://arago.si.edu/index.asp?c on=2&cmd=1&id=75517&img=1&pg=1 It is the first picture on top of the "portmanteau" mailbag. If it is alright to use, can someone download it and make it available to use in an article? I am not sure how to handle this. If I remember correctly, Smithsonian images are problematic. Some images hosted on the Smithsonian website have been taken by Smithsonian employees and are in the public domain as United States government works. Some other images hosted on the Smithsonian website are, if I remember correctly from the previous discussions, photos contributed to the Smithsonian Institute by other people, and those images are usually copyrighted and can't be used. Unfortunately, the Smithsonian Institute website rarely tells where the images come from, so it is usually not possible to tell if the images are in the public domain or not. --Stefan4 (talk) 14:53, 21 August 2012 (UTC)

I'm trying to find out if any of the images of HMS Pandora (the submarine) in this google search are works of the UK government. If so, they should be allowable under {{PD-UK gov}}. Donating my father's pictures

My name is Robert Schediwy.I have an account here, and yesterday I opened an account in the name of my deceased father Johann Schediwy. I am his only son and heir and thus I have the right to donate his pictures froom the 1930s. However, your uploading forms do not allow for such an alternative. It is either assumed that I did the picture myself (own ork) or that some stranger took it. What should I do, I do not fit into your categories? First of all, I'd stick to using a single account. There should really be no need to use a second account for this, and using an account with a real-world name that is not your own is not really something I would recommend.

As for the upload process, instead of the Upload Wizard, I'd recommend using the more flexible Special:Upload for this purpose.

• In the original source field, state that it is your late father's work and that you are the sole heir. This assumes that he was the actual the photographer. For photos that he did not create himself (such as File:Johann Schediwy soldier.jpg and File:Their first apartment1.jpg, presumably), you are probably not the copyright holder.
• In the author field, enter your father's name
• In the date field, enter the date the photo was originally created (or the closest approximation you can provide to the best of your knowledge)
• In the permissions field, enter {{CC-BY-SA-3.0-heirs}}, {{PD-heirs}} or {{GFDL-heirs}}, depending on the permission you would like to grant. If you would like to use a different license, reply here and we can probably help you with that. —LX (talk, contribs) 09:57, 23 August 2012 (UTC)

Thank you for the swift reply. It did not make me happy though. I see it as a tribute to my father to have created this aaccount and I'd rather stand by that decision. There won't be too many pictures to follow. I have also created an account in my father-in-law's name, Karl Oppolzer. He's still around but aged 88 and has completely entrusted me wihz the digitalization of his work. He has done a lot of interesting travelling. I'll try to muddle through, following , if necessary your recommendations regarding permissions. As to the specific pictures you mention: a lot of photos were then taken by remote control (wire) or automatic release. I would assume this to be the case with the pictures concerned. My view is that your having a separate account for your father's pictures should not cause any problems or criticism, so long as the pages for the two accounts each mention the existence of the other account and the relationship between them. Accepted file types

Commons:File types gives a list of file formats (JPEG SVG TIFF etc) that are accepted, but not a list of the actual file suffixes accepted (.jpg .svg .tiff etc). Agreed. I've tagged them for deletion, so they're now sitting in Category:Other speedy deletions. (I didn't tag File:Shared repo redirect.test, because it's used in testwiki:Image redirects). Again, I want to stress that many of the extensions listed above are probably not accepted for new uploads. When you combine alternate capitalization and spelling (jpeg with jpg), we find that 85% of all files are jpeg's, of those 80% use a file extension of .jpg, and 19% use a file extension of .JPG.

File deleted for lack of license

My Commons file File:Lee Valley White Water Centre (1st gate set, 2012 Olympics).svg was deleted for lack of a license. When I learned of this, I accidentally re-uploaded it to English Wikipedia instead of Commons. I would like to use the same name, so I would like to delete the English Wikipedia file before uploading the identical file, with the identical name, to Commons. How do I delete a Wikipedia file? Why was my page deleted?

I inputted several changes to the Edwards Wildman Palmer page which were all public knowledge and fair use. They have been deleted and I don't udnerstand why. How can these changes be restored? It's unclear which edits are acceptable and which aren't. Please help clearly explain what changes may be added to a page so that this page can be more robust. If you take a photo of an old painting, then the photo is copyrighted in some countries, such as the Nordic countries and the United Kingdom. Such photos are accepted on Commons because they are free in the United States, but for your own security, I would recommend that you make sure that you are not located in a Nordic country, in the United Kingdom or in any other country in which such photos get copyright, since the photographer could sue you personally. If you are in one of those countries, consider travelling to another country each time you need to upload a photo of a painting, and keep your tickets as evidence that you were out of the country. --Stefan4 (talk) 15:11, 22 August 2012 (UTC)

According to current Commons policies the copyright on the photo has no value there, only the painting counts, therefore you may upload it here under {{PD-art-100}}. You must crop the frame remains from there, though, since they are 3D. Both answers are correct. Wikimedia Commons' policy is not to delete photographic reproductions of two-dimensional public domain artworks, even if the distribution of those reproductions violates the photographer's copyrights or neighboring rights in some jurisdictions. You are, however, personally liable for everything that you upload, and the fact that a decision has been made on Commons to ignore certain aspects of laws in some jurisdictions of course does not affect the real-world implications of those laws.

That said, I'm not sure that Stefan's suggestion to travel abroad before uploading is sufficient to escape a problematic jurisdiction. At least in the context of criminal law, it's not unheard of for citizens to be held accountable under their native laws even for crimes committed abroad; see en:Criminal jurisdiction#International crime. While infringement of copyright and neighboring rights is typically a matter of civil law, it's also possible that the distribution is seen as an ongoing infringement unless the uploader takes steps to get the file taken down once they're back home. —LX (talk, contribs) 16:04, 22 August 2012 (UTC)

Copyright symbol on a CC-licenced image

I'm curious as to the position of File:Permanent_Calendar_gregorian.png - the image was released under a CC-Attribution licence by its uploader, but the image clearly says "(C) Karl Nimtsch" on it. I know the copyright holder for a picture uploaded by Blahblah424 and I emailed him the OTRS form. By the time he replied the image had been deleted. I re uploaded the image at the same url as before but the image is listed as not being compliant with the licenses. Just in case it would help I forwarded the email to Commons again after I uploaded it with a brief note explaining what happened. If you actually know that the copyright owner has already sent a reply that is in conformity with the licensing requirements and the OTRS procedure, it is better to not complicate the process with another mail. Just wait for their existing mail to be processed and leave the tag "OTRS pending" on the page until then. However, the description page currently does not mention the source of the image. Description of a certain file

Hello. I recently added a file called "File:Panorama view of the harbour from Busan Tower 2.jpg" but have gotten a message from Nikbot saying that there's a problem with the description/licensing of the file. It is a photograph from Flickr by Lubo Zviera Ryba, and it has the license of CC BY 2.0. Below is the message that Kikbot sent me:

"There seems to be a problem regarding the description and/or licensing of this particular file. It has been found that you've added in the image's description only a Template that's not a license and although it provides useful information about the image, it's not a valid license. Could you please resolve this problem, adding the license in the image linked above? You can edit the description page and change the text. Uploading a new version of the file does not change the description of the file. This page may give you more hints on which license to choose. Thank you.

For future uploads, go to tools:~bryan/flickr/upload and fill in the details. Later in the process, you will get to a page which looks like this. There is a notice on the page which says "You must then click this link to complete the upload." Click on the words "click this link". About certain Flickr photographs...

It seems that there are many photographs on Flickr that are licensed as cc by-sa 2.0 but also have something about Getty Images right below the license type, as seen on pages like "http://www.flickr.com/photos/tompagenet/5797375927/" and "http://www.flickr.com/photos/tompagenet/5797264577/" - is it okay to upload these photographs without any extra process? Image copyright problem

THere is an image File:Maynard fill Caduceus.jpg that the copyright was question at en:WP:EAR#Photo Credit. THe editor claims to be Pamela Ravenwood who has a blog and published that photo in her blog on MARCH 07, 2006. The photo in question was uploaded claiming it was taken January 20, 2008. .xcf thumbnails text overenlargement

For the first time I see that commons is trying to render a thumbnail for a .xcf file. However it comes out as seriously distorted. Presumably this is an imagemagic conversion, but what is going wrong to make the text come out so enlarged relative to the rest of the image?     • That particular article, though, has been tagged since last month as not necessarily notable. The subject though was only unboxing and not product review. I do recall that a feature of the Apple Macintosh was the inclusion of instructions on how to open the box on the outside of the box, a historic feature, but not worthy of a separate article. Now if they want to upload a video of how to open a cd jewel case, that would be useful - those things defy many people (even after the plastic wrapping is long gone). The people who are experts are entertainers, and the trick is to run a fingernail along the crack on the top between the moving cover and the fixed portion. Many a dvd case has had the little latches broken off because of not being aware that they are supposed to be opened first (if present). No where is it explained that all you have to do is push down on the center to release the dvd/cd from the case. The cd is not likely to break if you do not know that but the case can, and the effort is hugely increased. The cd/dvd packaging is one of the most frustrating. There are even worse examples of poor packaging though, that tend to result in breaking the product more often than the product is successfully retrieved. delete an uploaded file

I uploaded a file, but it has the wrong name. I would like to get the right name on the file. The most expedient way for me would be to delete the file, and then upload one with the correct name. • Actually, the most expedient way would be to use {{Rename}}. Alternatively, you can just upload under the new name and then tag your original badly named file with {{duplicate|other file}}. But most Commons users don't have the privileges to delete a file directly themselves. - Jmabel ! talk 15:50, 28 August 2012 (UTC)

Hi! There are two licence mentions on this file, CC By-SA and public domain. Which one do you want? Also, the copyright warning isn't automatically removed: you need to delete it yourself after you have chosen a suitable licence. Jastrow (Λέγετε) 15:17, 28 August 2012 (UTC)

First, please read COM:SCOPE. Commons is a repository of educational images, videos and sounds, so images need to have an educational value, otherwise they are out of scope. Then go to Special:UploadWizard, read all information carefully, then follow the wizard directives. Remember that Commons only accept free media. Your images will be accessible to everyone. Permission vs. Licence

Hi, what is to be done if the "permission" entry of a file is contrary to the licence template? File:DreadMarLUNAPARK200px.jpg gives "All rights reserved" as well as CC-SA. Ignore? Change? Shift to an obscure category where nobody finds it? Request deletion? --Rudolph Buch (talk) 15:31, 27 August 2012 (UTC)

hello comm help desk!

There is a picture to a man from yemen died in 2010 here [52] and one user uploaded it with no information of Author and as public domin at Arabic wiki. The yemen law says it should be 10 years untill the right expired. But what I understand even if 10 years or more there should be a name of author!. what do you guys think about it? The author should always be mentioned if their name or pseudonym is known. More importantly, the relevant part of {{PD-Yemen}} relies on the date of publication (not creation), so verifiable information on the source and date of the first publication must be provided. —LX (talk, contribs) 10:15, 4 September 2012 (UTC)

In case the conclusion wasn't clear from my previous answer: The file should not be transferred to Commons unless the required information is provided. That the Arabic Wikipedia apparently chooses to host files with unclear copyright status is not really a matter for Commons. Also, please don't crosspost the same question in multiple places!
