Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

It has been found that you've added in the image's description only a Template that's not a license and although it provides useful information about the image, it's not a valid license. Could you please resolve this problem, adding the license in the image linked above? You can edit the description page and change the text. Use of shape file from the internet[edit]

Hi, I notice that a lot of the images you've uploaded for presidential county results make use of the shape file from the NGHIS (http://www.nhgis.org/). This might constitute a creative work on their part, depending on the nature of the data (see Commons:Derivative works#Maps). Was it just raw data that they provided regarding county lines (i.e,. exactly what the public records state)? Or was there some adjustment? If so, we might need to find another way to upload the files.

Hello. I just realized you wanted me to respond here and not on your page. The shapefile I got from the internet has no information whatsoever attached to it. I had to add the county votes by hand (a somewhat lengthy process). It merely provides the shape of the counties. I do not believe this constitutes a copyright infringement in anyway because anyone is free to use it SO LONG as they cite the website. The terms of use are at the following page: https://www.nhgis.org/research/citation

Also, I noticed you removed the category for a lot of the already existing maps (after I went through all the hard work of adding them in October!). I'm not sure why you did that, but I've reverted it, because the categories were valid. I hope that doesn't upset you, because I think we're both working in good faith. Sorry about that. I was trying to make the "United States presidential election maps by county" category more aesthetically pleasing by getting rid of out of date maps. I still don't know a lot of wikimedia. For example, how do I delete 1860prescountymap.PNG. That is a primitive 1860 map I made without the use of GIS. I uploaded a GIS version of it awhile back. I would like to do the same with single color primitive maps (like 1920prescountymap.PNG).

Software used to create maps[edit]

Can I ask what software you use to create your maps? I also have some maps that I create, and I was thinking of adding some of my own variety, either to Wikipedia or for my own personal edification. Hello. I use Esri ArcMap (but I'm only using a free, 1-year student trial). Unfortunately, I don't think there is anyway for me to lend it to you because it has to be registered with ESRI by using the code on the back of the CD package. If I were you, I would try to get my hands on a free 1-year demo because the real deal cost thousands (I hope you do because I would really like to see your maps).--Tilden76 (talk) 20:38, 15 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

After I download the shapefile from HGIS, I add fields to the shapefile. For example, for 1932 I have the following fields: Winner, Percentage, RooseVote, RoosePerct, HooveVote, HoovePerct, OtherVote, OtherPerct, CountySum, USAColor.

I am currently using the book Presidential Vote, 1896-1932. It is a slow process of having to enter the results in county by county but the finished product makes it a worthwhile endeavor. Once I am done entering the vote for Roosevelt, Hoover, and "other", I add them up in the field CountySum.

Once that is done, I select all counties that have a total sum of greater than 1 (since I can't divide by 0). With those counties selected, I calculate the percentage for each candidate (RoosePerct = RooseVote/CountySum, etc).

I then run a query that shows me the counties where Roosevelt had a greater percentage than Hoover. With those counties highlighted, I enter the name "Roosevelt" in the Winner field. I do the same for the counties won by Hoover.

I then run a query that shows me counties won by Roosevelt and where RoosePerct >=.4 and RoosePerct <.5. With these counties highlighted, I enter 40 in the Percentage field. I do it for the rest of the percentages.

Once I know the winners and the percentages with which the won each county, I assign them a number. For example, Roosevelt 40 = 1. I put the 1 in the USAColor column. Roosevelt 50 = 2, etc.

I then assign a saved color to each number in the USAColor field.

Once that is done, I export the map and upload it to Wikipedia.

Alaska 2012 Presidential Results By Borough[edit]

Saw on the Wiki article for Alaska that there was a map displaying the results by borough for the presidential election, and that extended to the main article regarding the county results map. However, I can't find where this data came from, and the best I can come up with are results by the legislative districts, not by the boroughs. Any ideas where this information came from? Oh, and I would prefer if you do provide an answer, it be done through my Wikipedia profile; I don't come here often enough to come across replies in a timely manner. --Ariostos (talk) 02:04, 28 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Tilden76, when I moved the file File:DemocraticPresidentialCounty1908Colorbrewer.png the script put the .png extension on instead of the .gif and I (not noticing) hit the okay button. Sorry about that, is it okay to leave it with this extension (its original) or should it be moved to .gif? US President popular vote pre-1824[edit]

Would it be possible to share your source for the popular vote for US presidential elections prior to 1824? Most sites consider this data to be unavailable, but I notice that you have created a number of very nice county-level maps showing popular vote for the pre-1824 elections.

US Presidential Election of 1824 by County[edit]

TIlden76, I'm a fan of your work, but I have some concerns about your File:PresidentialCounty1824.gif map; For North Carolina, you show several counties as being for Adams; Adams, however, was not the subject of any balloting. The only candidates with votes were the "People's Ticket" (generally considered to be Jackson votes, but some Adams votes mixed in), and Crawford. Unless there's another explanation I'm missing, I think there was corrupted data - likely in Thad Eure's North Carolina Government -- which has led to later documentation listing Adams as the other vote-getter.   • A.R. Newsome's The Presidential Election of 1824 in North Carolina , probably the most exhaustive on the subject; and
  • Bourdon, Jeffrey, "'All Must Have a Say': Internal Improvements and Andrew Jackson's Political Rise in North Carolina in 1824", North Carolina Historical Review XCI:1 (January 2014)

Sources on election data 1876-1892[edit]

I'm currently assisting on a research project looking at predictors of racial violence in the deep south. One category we're interested in is political stances.

What's your sourcing for the county election results from 1876-1892? I haven't been able to locate them on my own.

What is your source for county level results?[edit]

Hello! I've noticed that you're the user behind almost every single county level map of US Presidential Election results. I have an affinity for maps and politics, as well as the statistics that come with the vote, and so I just wanted to say I really appreciate the effort you must've put into making these! I am curious where you found all the county level data. I've located several books, one in particular that I can't remember the name of that covers 1896-1936 (or something like that, I don't have it on me at the moment). There's also David Leip's website, which has county level returns from 1960 to the present. However, I've been unable to find anything lower than state level for the elections from 1892 and back. Hi! I'm wondering if you have the code you used for the presidential maps. I'm interested in making some minor modifications--mostly, I'd like to use a red-to-blue color scheme that makes it easier to see which counties are swing counties (by coloring them purple or very light colors). And specifically, do you have a blank county version of that map, updated to reflect 2024 counties, and that is in .png or .jpeg format? If you have either, I would greatly appreciate it.
