- Support I like the fact that it stimulates the compositions of images. It is also a very useful tipe of image.--Alexmar983 (talk) 00:31, 22 February 2015 (UTC)
- Support I love this idea, but not sure how the dual images would be added or linked. Perhaps the older image 'must' be sourced from Commons, and then linked on the voting page? Also, this would ensure copyright restrictions for the old image are already cleared. The alternative is contributors loading thier own 100 year old photograph which may significantly reduce the number of contributors. In either case, I would suggest that this theme allow 2 months for contributions rather than the usual one. L-Bit (talk) 01:55, 7 March 2015 (UTC)
- I think the challenge is difficult enough that further restrictions should be avoided and would therefore be fine with allowing every picture which can be compared with the 100 year old 'original' - even if it's not on commons (making it a two-month challenge is probably also a good idea). If we do decide that the old picture has to be on commons, I'd say that both taking an original from commons as well as uploading it during the challenge is fine. We discussed the theme around August 2014 (here's the discussion), but mainly decided that or older should be included into the challenge descriptions (perhaps even in the title). Anna reg (talk) 10:37, 9 March 2015 (UTC)
- It is quite likely that images published more than 100 years ago will be public domain, and therefore may be uploaded to Commons. I would say that images should either already be here, or uploaded here (from any PD source) during the contest. BD2412 T 15:18, 26 March 2015 (UTC)

Ivan2010 (talk) 12:01, 8 April 2015 (UTC)
- Comment Nice idea, but I am not sure there are enough old images in the world, beside in large cities. This will keep some users out. IMHO better than 100 years: Some years later .--Slick (talk) 04:25, 9 April 2015 (UTC)
- Here's what I would do - unless the uploader has dug something out of a very old family album, they are unlikely to own the old image, so allow it as long as it is available on Commons either because it is very old or because it is a picture they themselves (or their ancestor) took many years ago, and are just now uploading. I think it would still be pretty neat to aim for 100 years. Perhaps it doesn't necessarily need to be a picture of a structure - if you have a baby picture of your elderly grandmother, and can post that along with a current picture of the same person taken from the same angle and perspective, that would be fine with me. However, I would add that I do think photography has been a trend long enough for most inhabited places to be reasonably in reach of some previously photographed place or thing for which old pictures are public domain. BD2412 T 14:22, 15 April 2015 (UTC)
- Support Very nice idea. As for the old picture, if it's public domain or copyright owned by the contestant then it should be uploaded to Commons, and if not it should exist on the Internet so that it can be linked for comparison. I would support allowing the old picture to be non-photographic (i.e. a painting or drawing), as long as it is depicting a real thing. -- King of ♥ ♦ ♣ ♠ 15:01, 18 April 2015 (UTC)

Arachnids and crustaceans (or, more general, arthropods other than insects)

Bathrooms and toilets
[edit]Believe or not, that's challenging and maybe even necessary. Open the page Bathroom and take a look... most of the images used for the galleries have low resolution. I don't think we have a lot of high quality images of this topic. I can understand that there is always something more interesting than them around... but in the final result is that in the end most of our pictures in the subcategories are of poor quality.
I think the result would be useful and probably with some rare, funny, technical or unexpected output.--Alexmar983 (talk) 13:29, 7 September 2017 (UTC)

- Comment Added a few more exterior pictures of public toilets to the samples, to make the theme more accessible for people like me who don't like taking photos inside a public bathroom. Comment 'Birds' is a huge subject and perhaps could be made more specific, thus having the oportunity to re-use the term "birds" for other challenges. i.e.; 'Birds flying', 'Birds feeding', 'Blue Birds' etc. I also agree with Jarekt that the unloader needs to specify the species, not only to ensure correct categorization, but also to encourage them to identify the creature for both their, and our education. But as a whole, birds are great photographic subjects and should have a challenge. Support Nice idea -- Jiel (talk) 21:41, 20 April 2016 (UTC)
- Support but Comment concur it needs to be more targeted; the ideal would be "identified photos, in the wild, of species with few or no images already at Commons" - so Cygnus olor or Pavo cristatus would not be eligible, but Mergus squamatus or Afropavo congensis would be. - MPF (talk) 13:06, 14 June 2016 (UTC)

Blue
[edit]Proposed by Gozitano
We rejected "pink" (I liked it) and also "green and black" before because people did not like colors as a theme anymore, and now we try "blue"? If we selected types of colors again, what about something even less common? Such as "orange", "purple", "50 shades of gray"... :D? --Alexmar983 (talk) 05:04, 16 April 2017 (UTC)
- Hello and sorry, I didn't see that the "pink" proposition has been rejected. In this case I shouldn't proposed "blue" which is very common, I agree. Originally proposed by F. Riedelio and approved by Jarekt but due to lack of support in months despite many users commenting on this page, I propose the theme "castle and palaces" with a more specific military focus. We can do "palace" as a separate theme.

Caves, mines and sinkholes
[edit]As a spin off of Commons_talk:Photo_challenge/themes#Earth_Science, I think we can propose some new themes related to the subject. I suggest here a single competition for natural and artificial structures because territories may be very different around the world and this increases the chances that everyone has something to shoot at. We can split them further if you prefer.but in the end we will have overlapping themes soon or later, so I don't think we should worry to be too specific at every competition. --Alexmar983 (talk) 06:56, 3 August 2016 (UTC)

We had already cemeteries and ghostly places years ago, but we were going for "bones and blood" this autumn. So this one is on the architechtural/landscape side. Actually, I would really prefer photos of the single tombs, they are much more informative than panoramic views of cemetery.--Alexmar983 (talk) 04:42, 11 July 2017 (UTC)

- Support if we change it to "holidays" or "Holiday traditions" which could be related to any established holiday from any religion. Jarekt (talk) 04:00, 28 November 2016 (UTC)
- The challenge was here for months, if this had been a real issue, there was plenty of time to point out. I accepted to change crosses (a geometrical theme rather than a religious one) because we needed more symbols in any case there was all the time to further discuss. We had to listen to doubt about alcohol beverages for muslim countries even if 99% of our uploader come from places where alcohol is legal and now this? I think we offended more Australians or Argentinians when we planned "Summer" when it's winter there. Also, I could point out that religious people find contradictory to associate Christmas with this commercial stuff. Christmas is basically not an established holiday from any religion as it used to be. And most of the pictures will probably show non-religious traditions in any case. A Christmas tree in China BTW is no "Holiday tradition". It's a Christmas tradition in its commercial and social meaning, but there is no holiday. Yet they put decorations and similar. What about that? A Russian, and we have Russian uploaders, would be surprised probably because their Christmas is in January. And they won't probably fell respected or helped de facto just because you change a name. I mean... If we start we never finish here. If some US jew want to upload a photo of Hanukkah, I say keep those for other challenges and put a picture of your family eating Chinese food on the 25th (cliché based on American movies)... it is even more interesting. I encourage to propose wider title to encourage uploaders but there is no need here, Christmas is universal and people have tons of possible picture.
- Here is my "vision": if we want to be more inclusive, what if we make a challenge about ramadan this June. And next January we propose one about the end of the year including the Chinese calendar... and in July we proposed national holidays as it is a very common month for them, and so on... let's go that way.--Alexmar983 (talk) 14:27, 30 November 2016 (UTC)
- I would Support changing this to Winter holidays, to cover overlapping holidays in the time period. Hanukkah coincides with Christmas this year (it doesn't always), and there is also Kwanzaa. Let's not be too exclusive here. BD2412 T 16:51, 30 November 2016 (UTC)
- I start to think that's some long-term effect of politically correctness... All challenges exclude something and therefore statistically someone. You know what? I am starting to be less inclusive myself now. Much better to have clear titles and more challenges than this scenario, on the long term. So far I was supporting less specific titles because I was worried there wasn't enough pictures in general on certain theme, but if the effect is that with a challenge that is going to have easy pictures we enlarge the platform even more, than form now on I think I am starting to be mean.--Alexmar983 (talk) 04:55, 2 December 2016 (UTC)

Also, Belgium approved a new law so there's a little bit more freedom than in the past in the world. We've already accepted "fountains and wells", we can clearly accept some panorama-related competitions once in a while, I think we are prepared to deal with that. Closed or closing commercial activities
[edit]A possible reference category is Abandoned shops
When a shop closes, a change is happening. Gentrification, change in demographics, different consumers trends, evolution of technology, removal of not-so-old architectural styles (before that they are considered valuable for preservation), catastrophic events... a closed shop or workshop can symbolize all of that. That's why pictures of old or abandoned commercial activities are potentially useful. For example: only some articles of defunct chains have pictures of abandoned shops. We also have too many from U.S. compared to the rest of the world.
If we don't take some of these pictures once in a while, few other people will do, statistically.--Alexmar983 (talk) 07:55, 29 July 2016 (UTC)

- A closing shop is not necessarly a sign of decay, I was more interested in the whole possible scenarios with a strong focus on the shop itself (especially the brand, when present). If I could, I would keep the way it is and after this, I would do "urban decay" too, because I like it. Maybe we have enough picture of it, I don't know, it looks like a theme that people like. But really, I am inspired to open another challenge with that title. But let's listen to other "voters".--Alexmar983 (talk) 16:29, 10 February 2017 (UTC)

If the former, that should be made more clear; if the latter, I'd go for something like engines, motors and propulsion. --El Grafo (talk) 09:57, 15 February 2017 (UTC)
- We have electric motor as a different challenge, so I'd say it is mainly "Heat engines". I never though about it but that's how I would schedule it. So in my view the two challenges are "electric motors" and "Heat engines" (plus or minus cars if we want an easy or a complex challenge), and they should in any case be proposed at a certain distance of at least 2-3 months.--Alexmar983 (talk) 11:31, 15 February 2017 (UTC)

- the early warning is given sometimes here (see the ones about musical instruments) or can be understood informally following the discussions. I keep saying we are probably doing this one in the "summer", for example. So we can just write it here and people should be prepared. Someone can also write in the talk that "there is a big event on..." and we schedule it accordingly. About 2 or 3 months challenges... that's a new one! But if we write here in April "we do this one in August" I think everyone has all the time in the world in the previous months to organize their activities. And i can inform some local village pump too.--Alexmar983 (talk) 09:11, 26 March 2017 (UTC)

- Support I agree this would be great. However it probably applies to a different set of photographers than those who frequently participate at PC or other forums on Commons. The entry level for creating quality images is quite high/expensive and requires some experience. But it would be a wonderful opportunity to attract new photographers, if it could be coordinated/advertised for a month's challenge. -- Colin (talk) 12:45, 22 October 2016 (UTC)
- Comment - The US has already millions of Drones registered with the FAA. These users are already flying and taking photos that, under the law can not be used for any commercial use, yet many do as new FAA laws take effect. Cost of entry for anything that might make FP is about what any camera that would make a FP would need seems about the same really. Most drones can produce a QI, A Full Frame DSLR & Lens is not less then 3k today so I think its making the public aware of this channel for exposing work most of them never considered.. --WPPilot (talk) 18:51, 9 November 2016 (UTC)
- Support We need more drone photographers. Drones are expensive though (sorry to those who can't afford a drone), but I think with this theme, we would make our current photographers try another type of photography, which is this. And if more and more photographers try this, then we would have a lot of aerial photos. --★ Poké95 06:46, 23 October 2016 (UTC)

- There is no doubt about support, but what about the moment of the year to schedule this challenge? I'll try to ask people in national chapter to spread the news, I hope we can have challengers from all over the word, and I guess this is possible, I've also seen drone photos from the Southern hemisphere recently on commons... It was a grant in South Africa on meta or something like that. I think that maybe a mid-season could be the best option? I mean something around April? Of course people can use old image and they can start now to make tests, but a good part of upload are in real timer and I just assume that rainy or cold winter days in the northern hemisphere are not the best choice, right? Correct me if I am wrong, I am not an expert at all. I mean one thing is wearing a coat when you take picture of buildings, but sending an expensive equipment up in the air during rain sounds risky, right? --Alexmar983 (talk) 05:54, 12 November 2016 (UTC)

How to
[edit]So I suppose we should make a list of the similar proposals and do at least 4-5 of those competitions over the following months before we file this one in the archive right? --Alexmar983 (talk) 11:17, 30 July 2016 (UTC)
Similar competitions are:
- 2016-06: Commons:Photo_challenge/2016_-_June_-_Rock_formations
- 2016-11: Commons:Photo_challenge/2016_-_November_-_Rocks_and_Minerals
TBD (proposed 2016-07): Commons_talk:Photo_challenge/themes#Weather_phenomena (it is partially related)- 2017-08: Commons:Photo_challenge/2017_-_August_-_Caves,_Mines_and_Sinkholes
- TBD (proposed 2016-08): Commons_talk:Photo_challenge/themes#Canyons_and_gorges

- TBD (proposed 2016-09): Commons_talk:Photo_challenge/themes#Extreme and unusual weather phenomena (it is partially related)
- ...
I think that as soon as we (=I?) put some old proposals in the archive, I could introduce something new like "Mines, sinkholes and caves". And later something like "coastlines and seashores", "fossils and sediments" "Canyons and gorges"... what do you think? Do we have to be even more specific?--Alexmar983 (talk) 11:34, 30 July 2016 (UTC)

Extreme or unusual weather phenomena
[edit]I am reusisng some of the ideas of the rejected proposals "rain" and "clouds", and "Weather phenomena", with some overlap with the general cycle of earth science themes.
Some examples are tornadoes, floods, cloud-to-cloud lightning, intense snow blizzards, funnel clouds, tsunamis, sandstorms... maybe extreme air pollution? personally I think we should give it a chance if it is better defined, and it is quite clear we are looking for pictures in a challenging situation. Fishing and Aquaculture
[edit]it was originally: Fishing (Angling) With hands, hooks, poles, rods, reels, nets, and line there are many varied and interesting ways for one of human-kinds oldest way to obtain food. Fishing can be done in all seasons worldwide. Include photos of people fishing for sport or necessity or fishing equipment, lures, rods, reels, etc..
Support Ok, I tried to avoid in the gallery the use of images of "people" and "fish" and "boats", but after a survey I agree that we do need good technical pictures. Too many photos have low resolution, for example. And challenges about professions and food didn't get many pictures of this type so far.--Alexmar983 (talk) 04:59, 19 October 2016 (UTC)

If we want to encourage more photos of the kind above, it is - in my opinion - a good idea to propose a motif topic which may benefit from HDR. - KaiBorgeest, well it might be an idea, if this challenge runs, to offer suggestions like that, so people know what might be worth trying. I think part of the photo challenge is to encourage photographers to try new techniques, not just to spark creative ideas about what to photograph. If we just suggested the 'large interior photography' then it wouldn't obviously encourage anyone to try the technique. -- Colin (talk) 07:23, 3 May 2018 (UTC)

- Support The non-insect arthropod challenge was fine, so this will work too. – b_jonas 12:47, 27 July 2017 (UTC)
- Support But to make it different from the past non-insect arthropods challenge, we should really limit it to actual insects. I've thus removed two sample images from the list, as they showed spiders. I guess the challenge description should have some information on what is an insect (as opposed to spiders, scorpions, centipedes etc.) – something along the lines of "must have 6 legs" … I think we should also require the subjects to be determined down to at least genus level. --El Grafo (talk) 10:16, 8 January 2018 (UTC)
- Yes, should include only insects, not other animals. No, I don't think we should require determining the subjects to the genus level. Insects are very varied, you can't expect submitters to be expert entomologists. Also, requiring identification would cause people to mostly submit photos of common insects, but photos of rarer insects are more variable. I added more pictures. It's easy: we have lots of good arthropod pictures, but need more, and will always need more. The topic is repeatable. – b_jonas 01:53, 6 March 2018 (UTC)

Keyholes and key switches
[edit]See Category:Keyholes. We have some nice images, but not a lot of them. It could be interesting, because you can find some of them around but it is not easy to create a nice, creative, image. This could maybe inspire to look for unusual example. I added "key switches" in the title because they are a subcategory and we really need something better specifically in that direction. Keys are possible in the pictures but they should not be the main focus. (I think this was proposed by me, sorry if the signature is missing--Alexmar983 (talk) 19:56, 15 April 2019 (UTC))

It is intended as "undocumented" lakes and ponds. Proposed by Alexmar983.
Starting from March 2017 we will begin the "undocumented" challenges and it is going to take a while to refine the tools. This is the new "frontier" of our geographic challenge. I am setting up a series of proposal as I said in the talk. So, why lakes? Well, in some countries there are thousands of them and they are still undocumented. Think about the northern part of Canada for example. Another example: svwiki created via bot all the entries to their lakes and they are A LOT. Of course since like hills and mountains statistics and language are never homogenous, I also include ponds. And you can also focus on oasis, I guess.--Alexmar983 (talk) 16:48, 5 February 2017 (UTC)
- ok I am not sure about the "undocumented", so maybe it is going to be more "free".--Alexmar983 (talk) 07:44, 16 February 2017 (UTC)
We can reshape it as a "free" challenge. I hope we will not end up getting too much of images of important and big lakes.--Alexmar983 (talk) 14:15, 5 May 2017 (UTC)
- What about just "small lakes"? It is ambiguous but I think "mores, ponds and small lakes" get the idea. We can check the upload and voters can be more critical if they think the lake is important. So no lake Eire, Garda, Victoria... just "small" one, the one you rarely know the existence if the are outside of your region or county. Managing with the gray area is worth the effort of getting dozens of pictures of less known spots. What do you think? I put small lake in gallery.--Alexmar983 (talk) 07:59, 8 June 2017 (UTC)

Measurements and unit of measures
[edit]Years ago I saw a scale graded with the very rare "daL" (something I only heard at school and never saw before and probably will never see again) and I did not have a camera. I still regret it. But more importantly, few months ago a user asked me if I could find images of the old sample of units of weight, volume and length used in Italian towns before the French revolution. They are the plates and vase that were installed close to town halls and old public scales. Those two anecdotes made me think that some effort in that direction could be useful.
The focus in this proposal is a little bit larger and can be scientific, commercial or historical. Most of our images of scientific measuring instrument are also low-resolution. Of course we can refine to a more specific target if you think it is better. --Alexmar983 (talk) 16:36, 13 February 2017 (UTC)

Railway infrastructure
[edit]Railway infrastracture (train stations, railway bridges, signal towers); proposed by F. Riedelio
- Support High time we got something related to transport up and running. -_Rsrikanth05 (talk) 10:01, 30 March 2015 (UTC)
- Support Support, we had wheels a while ago in which there were a few locomotive wheels, but this is quite different L-Bit (talk) 03:26, 25 March 2016 (UTC)
- CommentI think that "Railway infrastructure" and "Railways" are too similar and could be merged. We can always propose another theme about transportation in the future and get more pictures. We have enough, there's no need to push in that direction with two almost overlapping contests, IMHO.--Alexmar983 (talk) 13:31, 28 July 2016 (UTC)
Reorganization
[edit]As I said, I reorganized the proposal merging them. I suggest we split them in a little bit more defined way. For example "railway bridge" is part of both, it is an aspect of an infrastructure but it can be a good explicative picture of a railway line itself. Also, "train stations" should be "undocumented train stations" (as stated also with town halls etc) but to do that we need, as I said before, precise tools. Things like that.--Alexmar983 (talk) 01:37, 16 September 2016 (UTC)
Here are some possible subsets to combine:
- Locomotives
- Train wagons (exteriors and interiors)
- Freight trains
- Railways technology (hot bearing detector, automatic block signaling...)
- Undocumented train stations
- Railways crossings
- Panoramic pictures of railways and trains
Part of the images about railways where provided by the challanges "unusual vehicles" and "wheels" so the competion about the trains can probably merge "locomotives" and "wagons" and we also have quite a lot of image of trains in any case.--Alexmar983 (talk) 01:47, 16 September 2016 (UTC)
As with "earth science", we can think of a series of specific challenges and dilute them, on every semester. It takes longer but avoid ducplicates and increase the focus on what we are actually missing. We could also inform wikipedia projects--Alexmar983 (talk) 02:07, 16 September 2016 (UTC)

Rural decay
[edit]Manmade structures in rural settings that are falling apart, decaying, rotting, have flaking paint, etc; generally caused by people leaving rural areas for urban and suburban areas and/or population decline but could also be simple neglect. I'm thinking this should be limited to places like farms, meadows, wooded areas, and small villages but not things like abandoned ancient stone ruins. --- Proposed by PumpkinSky talk 14:40, 9 June 2017 (UTC)
We can do this as well. In these last months, we are really pushing a lot of decaying or rotten "stuff". We have to start to pick one of the other "similar" ideas soon, or it will take ages to schedule them all, given a decent time to avoid overlap.--Alexmar983 (talk) 15:03, 9 June 2017 (UTC)
- The proposed theme above "Destroyed and disappeared places and buildings" is in line with what I referred to as "abandoned and ancient ruins". That's the only similar pending theme I find. For themes already used, I found "100 years later" and "Mother Nature strikes back", both from back in late 2015. PumpkinSky talk 15:21, 9 June 2017 (UTC)
- I was referring to "corroded objects" too. And I also proposed broken stuff, which created no reaction. There is also "archeological sites", so you see we are really pushing in that direction from different perspectives. We can approve them all, we simply should dilute them a little bit.--Alexmar983 (talk) 05:36, 10 June 2017 (UTC)

Sensors are devices that gather information about the physical world. Examples include thermometers, light sensors, cameras, encoders, flow meters, microphones, pressure sensors, strain gauges, and so on. Sensors may be big or small, and are found abundantly in all households in all sorts of devices. - about the personality rights "warning", maybe we could create some template with link to commons page. Specifically for themes that focus a lot on people (it would be the same for "traditional professions" for example). I hope it does not make things more complicated. If we re going for undocumented theatre like in other competitions, here is the quary of User:Incola I've adapted. These are the opera houses missing P18 on wikidata in Italy (Q30). I can show how to change the line of country. For theaters building, this one is an example with a specific region of Italy but I am not sure about the item because it is used both for the art and the building concept. Also, try to tune the region to a smaller size if your time run outs. I have a poor connection so I can't make a lot of tests.--Alexmar983 (talk) 02:21, 28 September 2016 (UTC)

Some however, get restored and are on display, and some are still in use worldwide. Photos of tractors of any shape, size, style, condition or color from around the world.

Working women
[edit]For the next upcoming VisibleWikiwoman campaign I would suggest to do a more focused challenge here. I think showing women at their work would open the chance of getting good pictures of notable women in the science world or female politicians. At the same time we would have a chance to collect more pictures of female professionals to illustrate articles about professions. I am not set on the theme of working women, I could also imagine Women in Sports, or Women in Sciences, or something similar. But it would be good to be prepared, the next campaign is also being prepared elsewhere. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Kritzolina (talk • contribs) 23:13, 14 December 2018 (UTC)
