I am now proud owner of a TUSC account!

File:Bin_laden_image.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

That is a pity, thanks for the work! Romaine (talk) 09:29, 11 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

user set standard languages for the description fields[edit]

Hallo Romaine, reagarding your (hope you are the right user) question in IRC:

Here is a bit text prepared to post on MediaWiki_talk:UploadForm.js.

user set standard languages for the description fields
How can I add automatically more languages to the uploadpage (for descriptions in plus two languages)?

I would like to have four languages each time I open the Upload form http://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special:Upload&uselang=ownwork

User:Saibo told me in IRC:

MediaWiki:UploadForm.js adds the two standard languages to the form (if I see it correctly). The function call which adds a language seems to be:

UploadFormFull.addDescField (table, lang, idx++, stored_form);
Solution idea:

Is it possible to query a user set variable (in monobook.js) which contains a list/array of preferred standard langages for the form. And then adde them instead of the two standard ones?

Cheers --Saibo (Δ) 00:34, 2 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Link for later: MediaWiki:UploadForm.js/Documentation#Initial_languages_for_descriptions. Thanks for helping out! :-) Romaine (talk) 17:18, 3 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

So, how can we do this better[edit]

Replying to your talk page--- here's the situation:

 • Voter participation is at an all time low in the election, and there's widespread agreement something needs to be done to improve that.
 • With just a few days left, we created a quick template and began soliciting translations by pasting the template itself to various Village Pumps and requesting help with a translation. (there's no other way to include a template from another project)
 • The text was written to be machine-translatable. Simple sentences only, reusing phrases and vocabulary as much as possible. This means saying thinks like 'share' instead of 'share this template with those individual you feel confident would genuinely benefit from sharing', or 'share _after_ translation is complete' or other subtleties.
 • In the future, hopefully features will be added to allow easier cross-wiki communication. (interwiki transclusion, for example).

There have been a lot of overwhelmingly positive to the template in other venues, so I'm not certain what is generating some of the isolated objections. Obviously, you mention one-- English text showing up on a non-english project's Village Pump. Template copy-and-pasting has been mentioned and we're working on a solution to that.

The 'promotion campaign' is mostly over for this election, but there will be more in the future. So it's useful to ask you-- how should we accomplish a similar mission the next time around? That is, how could the global community promote global participation in the foundation election? Many people I've spoken to don't know what the foundation is, don't realize the power it has, and don't understand why they need to pay attention to it.

In the future, when we aren't in a time crunch, how can we solve this problem better than we did this time? --PromoteElection2011 (talk) 20:19, 8 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Missing template with identifier[edit]

Romaine,

thank you for your help. It was just an oversight

Jean-Pol GRANDMONT (talk) 07:16, 5 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

File:0 Clervaux - Château (1).JPG[edit]

Hi, Romaine,

Regarding the above mentionned file, can you help me to put the correct template for the monuments in Luxembourg.

Thank you in advance.

Jean-Pol GRANDMONT (talk) 17:47, 5 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Jean-Pol GRANDMONT, In Belgium it is a must to have an identifier-template on the file page. Monuments in Luxembourg do not have identifiers that are set by the heritage agency, so no identifier-template is needed. Bij the way: Great pictures! :-) Romaine (talk) 18:47, 5 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

FOP in Belgium[edit]

Note that several "wiki Loves Monuments" in Belgium images are/will be deleted because of FOP in Belgium restrictions (Special:Contributions/Lionel_Colin and Special:Contributions/Agama). This should be documented somewhere, unless the fact of being a cultural heritage frees us from FOP restrictions. Best. --Foroa (talk) 16:26, 6 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Foroa, I think you then can delete thousands of files from Commons, because there are many many buildings on pictures that are situated in Belgium. That is not realistic. This has been discussed on nl-wiki itself too, and I conclude from that that there is no strict policy on deleting files, but only if the buildings are new and/or the designer does not want pictures of it. Many buildings like houses do not have known architects so it is impossible to determine werther a picture must be deleted. Romaine (talk) 16:39, 6 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
PS: I think we should be very carefull and not to start to act as pseudo-lawyers in this matter. Romaine (talk) 17:01, 6 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I am against the outdated and very discriminating FOP law of Belgium and the way it is interpreted on Commons. Why I never get involved with such discussions and deletions. Nevertheless, they get deleted. Why it might be interesting to get in touch with the goverment; after all they are allowed to publish pictures despite the FOP like this. The release of some FOP rights might be a condition to get the status of a cultural heritage monument. --Foroa (talk) 17:22, 6 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
A couple of users who are organizing WLM BE/LUX as well, is thinking of a chapter in Belgium. A chapter is much better capable in reaching goals regarding FOP. Interesting thoughts! :-) Romaine (talk) 17:31, 6 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Problem with WLM BE/LUX; it is not easy to switch in other languages (interwikis on the left don't work) and in my case, it starts up in German without language selection on the first half of the screen. --Foroa (talk) 18:06, 6 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
On the website special software is implemented, so we do not have interwiki's, but we have a section in the sidebar to select the language version of the menu you want to see in. I wished I would like having it been a bit different, but that isn't the case. If you visit a page in another language, you can choose at the right top corner the version of that page in another language. Greetings - Romaine (talk) 18:11, 6 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Groetjes - Romaine (talk) 23:49, 9 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

FOP Belgium[edit]

Thanks for your intervention regarding the deletion of FOP pics. I am interested in more details of yours and others' objections to the current deletion practice. Do you have any links to discussions of the subject? Thanks again, Peregrine981 (talk) 09:56, 14 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Peregrine981, At the moment I am a bit overloaded with work. I have to manage to check all the new uploads for Wiki Loves Monuments, curretly too much. Will answer later. Romaine (talk) 22:53, 15 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I can appreciate that you have work to do, but unfortunately these photos are about to be deleted unless I can raise some concrete objections, so I would be super appreciative of at least a link to a discussion or a cease and desist order at: Commons:Deletion_requests/File:Brussels_central_renovations_2010.jpg and Commons:Deletion requests/File:Bruxelles Central.JPG. Thanks so much!!! --Peregrine981 (talk) 13:17, 20 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I responded there, if you know more requests, please let me know. Greetings - Romaine (talk) 14:20, 20 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Files deleted wrongly deleted because of FOP:

I found two more. :( - Romaine (talk) 01:20, 21 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the support. It seems that we will have to take up the discussion at Commons:Freedom_of_panorama#Belgium or we will lose probably many more photos in future. Until that page is changed they will always be able to point to it and delete everything. :( --Peregrine981 (talk) 09:51, 21 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I think two things are needed. One is a clear picture of what the actual copyright law says. Two is that we should promote FOP in Belgium. I am think of creating Wikimedia Belgium, which then has a name in what people can organize things, like for FOP, in Belgium. Perhaps interested? Romaine (talk) 10:19, 21 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
See #FOP in Belgium above. If the government has the right to publish pictures of heritage monuments, so could we. They are cooperating for the "wiki loves monument" action, so they might be the perfect entering point. --Foroa (talk) 11:33, 21 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, it is a very strange situation with the government. I did send an email last night about this matter, and I got response from several people with juridical sources that support the current way acting on Commons. In my opinion such sources already had to be added to the FOP-page, because I think it is very important to base the actions on this kind of matter on good sources that are outside Wikimedia. Another strange point is that (so far I heard from other people) it seems that this matter hasn't brought into court yet, so no judge seems to have taken action based on that law. Last night my goal was to get a clear situation based on sources, that goal is reached know I think. Romaine (talk) 17:15, 21 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

FYI, yesterday I deleted:

which are mentioned above, as well as

According to their descriptions, these are all in Luxembourg, not Belgium.

I reject the charge that any of these, in either country, are "wrongly deleted". Admins must rely on and act in accordance with our policies and internal guidelines. Commons:Freedom of panorama is very clear about the lack of FOP in both countries, so all of these are derivative works.

I would be very happy to see the laws changed in Belgium, Luxembourg, France, and other places (including the USA) where there is no FOP for various works.

Equally, I would be happy to find out that Commons:Freedom_of_panorama#Belgium is wrong. If it is, please discuss it at Commons talk:Freedom_of_panorama, not on individual DRs, or here. Until it is changed we must enforce the rule as it stands, not what we all wish the law were.      Jim . . . . Jameslwoodward (talk to me) 13:25, 21 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Jameslwoodward, Thanks for the reply! I already had read the conclusion of the deletion of the files. After reading it all I can agree (with pain in the heart) that the correct decision was taken. However, I searched through Commons and Wikipedia, and I did not found a good juridical source on this matter, and it all started to get vague (it already was before deletion). I send an email last night to find juridical sources, and now I got at least one reliable source. If we create rules based on laws, we should base them on good sources. Greetings - Romaine (talk) 17:15, 21 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
PS: I think it is very good to register all files that are deleted because of a missing FOP, this for later discussion to have examples and we can identify this matter as an urgent subject that we would like to change. If we have hundreds/thousands of files that are deleted because of FOP, I think we give signal that this matter restricts too much the spread of free information. We can create a page in my user space, would you like to help that list then be expanded in future? Romaine (talk) 17:21, 21 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Created: User:Romaine/Deletions due missing FOP
Nothing would please me more than to have us be able to keep more images in countries lacking FOP -- so you have my best wishes for your research. I read only basic French and neither Dutch or German, so I don't think I can be helpful in your research. Rather than making a list in your space, you may want to create and use a category like this one:
to add to all the applicable DRs, so that if you get Commons to change policy, they deletions will be easy to find.
-- and please call me "Jim", as this tries to show:      Jim . . . . Jameslwoodward (talk to me) 17:27, 21 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Hello Jim! Great! :-) I try to organize/set up Wikimedia Belgium as well, and in this the goal to get FOP in Belgium an Luxembourg is a very strong one. If we want to lobby for FOP, we must have a juridical source, to base on, to be prepaired. Next step will be the lobbying itself. I read yesterday a blog post of Rémi Mathis, Président de Wikimédia France (also) and I think working together on that matter would be great to get results.
A category is great for this subject, I think I will create one for Belgium and one for Luxembourg if I can't found one. But I also would like to keep the list: red links also give a good impression on people that this really should get fixed in law. Thanks for the help! :-) Romaine (talk) 17:40, 21 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Enig idee ...[edit]

Hi!, I have proofread the spanish translation and I have translated it to galician. Where are the files of the survey for translation?. Bye, --Elisardojm (talk) 23:46, 4 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Those are scheduled to be created tomorrow. I am not sure if we need translations in galician, I thought Wiki Loves Monuments wasn't in galaician. Hello Romaine, did you read what I wrote on the disc-page of Category:Viaducs de Morez before you deleted? For my understanding this renaming is completely wrong and passed by speedy deletion incorrect! --Хрюша ?? 06:13, 7 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I placed the category back to make a better judgement possible by someone else. Greetings - Romaine (talk) 13:11, 7 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, but meanwhile somebody changed the name another time. Now it is Category:Viaducts in Morez. It is not what I wanted to have discussed but at least a naming in one language. Maybe I put my comment not at the optimal place but such changing should not be done by speedy deletion and without reflecting little bit. Consequence is that many Files will be renamed several times. -- Хрюша ?? 13:29, 7 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
At least, the name is now complying with Commons naming rules. We have naming rules in Commons for a very good reason. It is not because we are more tolerant for some local names that we have to be tolerant for names that are clearly typos in an English perspective. There are around 1000 categories speedy moved per month as the normal housekeeping and harmonisation work. If this is a problem for you, I have no problem in harmonising the names of the other viaducs to make them comply with the Commons naming rules. --Foroa (talk) 14:21, 7 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Trofa Church[edit]

I think we have two "Trofa Church" in Portugal. I made pictures of Trofa Church in Category:Trofa, Category:Porto (district).

The Category:Church of São Salvador (Águeda) is another church in pt:Trofa (Águeda), Category:Aveiro (district).

So not all the pictures are in the same category.

Thanks Joseolgon (talk) 13:01, 21 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Ok, Please mention that on both the category pages, with a link to the other category, then it will be easier to find the appropiate category for users. Greetings - Romaine (talk) 14:12, 21 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hoi Romaine, this picture is not the historic building "Waag", Kasteelstraat 4-6 in Liedekerke (N° 40015) but café "De Waeg", Gemeenteplein 11 in Liedekerke (without n°). Therefore I have removed the picture from the category of WLM-monuments. Best regards, Sonuwe (talk) 13:43, 27 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

on Lake Zurich vs. by Zürichsee, etc.[edit]

Regarding Category:Cities and villages by Zürichsee. May I point out that you deleted a correctly named category in favour of a faulty one. Cities and villages by Zürichsee doesn't make sense! Of course a ***-by-lake-category is correct but as soon as the lake is defined by its name by is wrong. I think we shouldn't consider categories with wrong nomenclature as too "well-established" to be replaced by a correct one; especially after all the work of moving the subcategories has been done! That is certainly not vandalism. On the other hand...

May I also point out that the mother category is Lake Zurich and NOT Zürichsee. -Pingelig (talk) 14:52, 2 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Yes you may point out. If I can help with fixing the situation, please let me know, my bot can relocate the categories and files. Sorry for my mistake, I apparently got mistaken/confused. Greetings - Romaine (talk) 15:12, 2 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hernoemingen in 't wilde weg[edit]

Hey Romaine.

--Foroa (talk) 15:32, 3 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Uitgevoerd Handled - Romaine (talk) 19:55, 6 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

If you are going to add any of the various FOP or Undelete categories to DRs you must use the following markup:

 • <noinclude></noinclude>.

If you fail to put the category inside the noinclude section, then not only the DR itself, but all the logs and other transclusions of the DR will be added to the category. This has the effect of tripling the number of entries in the category and reducing performance somewhat.

Please go back through your contributions and add the noincludes where required.      Jim . . . . Jameslwoodward (talk to me) 14:32, 12 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry, will do. Will check all the pages where I put the category. Thanks for the note. Greetings - Romaine (talk) 14:33, 12 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I noticed that you used your Bot to do it. I read the notes at User:RomaineBot -- can your Bot run AWB on an automatic basis? -- for example, I recently added a Delete template to a large number of files using AWB, clicking on Save for each one. Can your bot do that? If so, do I use it myself, or do I ask you to do the task? Thanks,      Jim . . . . Jameslwoodward (talk to me) 16:16, 12 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Yes my bot makes it easier (besides clicking wrong) to be exact. I used it this time semi-automatically, what means I view first the proposed edit (because the noincludes can be in different ways around the category) and then click save/ignore. But I can use it automatically too, but that I only use when I am 99.9% sure he always do the exact thing that has to happen. The only disadvantage is that bot-edits aren't seen by users, which I think would be handy if I nominate something. But if it is a large group of files created by one user, then I think that would not be a problem. Then I can help yes. Greetings - Romaine (talk) 16:22, 12 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. The next time I face a long list in AWB, I'll ask you about it.      Jim . . . . Jameslwoodward (talk to me) 17:06, 12 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Galician poets, speedydeletion[edit]

Hi, I did a mistake with the deletion of "Category:Galician poets", it's a correct category but it has to be a subcat of Writers in Galician, and not in Writers from Galicia as it was. Could you restore it, please?. Thanks in advance, --Elisardojm (talk) 23:30, 12 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

File:Saison.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not.

Thank you!

Wedstrijd Wiki Love Monuments 2011[edit]

Beste Romaine,

http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Monuments_2011_in_Belgium/Winners.

:-) Romaine (talk) 20:54, 15 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I have undeleted this image which you speedied, as it was kept at DR only 9 days ago. Please check discussion pages for Kept notices before speedying in future.

As an aside, I suspect that the user who nominated it, User:Throwaway85, is probably the person who's been IP-vandalising the image page for the past day or so [1] [2] [3], which caused me to semiprotect the page. Note Special:Contributions/Throwaway85 where having not edited for 5 months, he suddenly comes back and nominates this particular image for deletion having shown no previous in nominations or penises. -mattbuck (Talk) 12:06, 7 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

This is one solidly in the "penis wars" and hence a bit toxic so you may not want to touch this too much. However rather than considering deletion, the video may be improved by choosing the most appropriate categorization and as a topic this might be usefully helped by a village pump discussion. I'm thinking of the categories such as "Videos of free-fall" (which I have now removed as this was not, by definition given by physics, freefall) and "Slow motion videos". The latter category may be technically correct, but can be considered a surprise to find a random penis in it. -- (talk) 12:32, 7 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
It appeared to me that it was just another image of a penis, so I deleted it. I try to do my work as good as possible, but as a human 100% is impossible. I trust your judgement and correction, thanks for notifying. Sorry for the work. Greetings - Romaine (talk) 13:00, 7 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Stop adding duplicate tags[edit]

OK. Sorry. I have had that because there are a lot of innecesaries duplicates in Category:Maps of municipalities of Salamanca. I think that is better delete its. For example: see Category:Pereña de la Ribera 4 maps!! --Tres1416 (talk) 17:17, 7 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Tres1416, The number of maps is no problem, we aren't short disk space and we want users (bot inside as outside Wikim/pedia) to have the possibility to choose. Please do not do it again and all is fine! :-) Greetings - Romaine (talk) 21:57, 7 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hi! I reverted your reversion of my speedy tagging of this file. You said that «No valid reason stated,» but I think that Template:duplicate gives all the explanation you might need. You also recomend I read COM:FR — well, I suggest you do it too, especially this here bit, where the example used is exactly these pesky BS diagrams. -- Tuválkin 12:10, 8 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Let me absolutely clear: there is no valid reason to use speedydeletion for deletion PNG-files in favor of SVG-files. Please do not continue with adding duplicate tags for this. You already have been corrected in that earlier, so you should know this. If you want a PNG-file to be deleted in favor of a SVG-file, use the normal deletion procedure. Greetings - Romaine (talk) 12:20, 8 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Dont you guys have nothing better to do than harass me over this? Look — some guy wanted a mask shaped as an end-of-track for Russian rail diagrams. He probably didnt know how to make SVGs on the fly so he cobbled up a PNG and uploaded it — funny name, no cats: a typical hack work. Meanwhile the file is not in use anymore, replaced with better icons. This image has no use whatseoever — you're clogging the pipes. I'm not using speedy deletion to replace PNG-files in favor of SVG-files in general (not always a good idea, I know) but in this case, it is the only sensible thing to do. Assume good faith? Geez, if I were a troll blanking pages with "LOL" you’d be patting my back, huh? But since I’m obvioulsy wanting to get some job well done, already two top-brass in a row come to revert my tagging, instead of fixing it. Geez. -- Tuválkin 13:36, 8 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Pray tell: How come Template:duplicate is not the correct approach in this case? If you render File:BSicon_lENDEa_mask.svg at 20×20 px you’ll get and exact dupe File:DDEPu.png. Isn’t Template:duplicate for duplicates? Or is there some convention stating that an SVG can never be a duplicate of a PNG, even if the latter consists of simple right-angle geometry and the the former slaves it at the nominal resolution? -- Tuválkin 13:41, 8 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I don't know what you are talking about. But it is certainly not allowed to use speedy deletion for a "duplicate" file if it concerns a PNG versus SVG file. There have been a lot of discussions about it, with a clear come out: no speedy, but a normal deletion procedure. Duplicate is ment to be used for exact or scaled-down duplicates of other files. Files that are not exact duplicates should be requested for deletion on Commons:Deletion requests. Greetings - Romaine (talk) 14:02, 8 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, I see you don’t know what you’re talking about. That’s cool — I don’t know about a lot of stuff myself. (Of course I don’t revert other people’s edits when it pertains stuff I don’t know about, bu still…)
That «lot of discussions» you mention, apparently held by mighty brains next to which mine has a puny stature, has thus decided that, as I feared, «an SVG can never be a duplicate of a PNG, even if the latter consists of simple right-angle geometry and the the former slaves it at the nominal resolution?» That’s truely baffling.
Maybe, on top of that "lot" we could held that discussion once more and allow for a less ham-fisted approach? Or maybe you could at least point me to one of those discussions?
-- Tuválkin 20:49, 8 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

You start to get personal. If you can't discuss the matter in a normal way, then end of discussion. So end of discussion. Romaine (talk) 21:22, 8 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

No, no, no: You were personal to start with (personal in the bad meaning of the word). You started out by chastising me, pointing out I was «corrected» about this before, uttering dire warnings about me not go against the decisions of “my betters”, and resorting to boilerplate arguments.
Indeed you were not “personal” enough concerning the matter of deleting this file — as in you did not give attention to it as a separate entity: You ignored the matter at hand, you refused to analize the history of this file, its intended role, and its useability for the project considering its file name, file format, and visual content.
I ask you (again) this: Cannot a whitish square charged with a black rectangle on its middle (its height one fifth of the square’s side and its length two fifths) and showing a transparent hole (one said fifth wide and extending from the bottom of the square to the said rectangle) — be identically rendered in both PNG and SVG formats, just as any other geometric image where all elements are, at a given resolution, perfectly rendered as whole pixels? Isn’t this File:DDEPu.png the same as this , pixel by pixel? If so, why not tag it as a duplicate? (You say COM:FR and I say M:IAR.)

Your block of User:Bali ultimate and rev deletion of their comments[edit]

Perhaps you could comment at Commons:Administrators/Requests/Fæ on why you rev deleted the !vote of an editor (and subsequently blocked them)? Delicious carbuncle (talk) 03:53, 28 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I too am not seeing the necessity for a block, and am strongly considering unblocking. There was nothing that I would consider to be outing or an egregious personal attack. I would appreciate it if you could expound on the reason for your block at User talk:Bali ultimate soon. Thank you, NW (Talk) 17:47, 28 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

(after edit conflict) Sorry, but that I will not do as that would interrupt a discussion about the request to become admin, and that page solely should be used for that request, and there never should be discussed any other stuff. I think one of the classical ways of disruptive replies is not staying on topic and mixing up a discussion with another topic. If my actions arise questions, they can be asked on my talk page. Also I do not want to respond on the subject of the admin request itself, others should determine if they think he is suitable for this job or not. Also I want to stay neutral in this matter, I do not wish to continue to have attention to this subject and do want to leave other matters to other admins. But I can give a reaction here on my talkpage why I blocked and hide the edits. I also think that for the final result/conclusion this will not matter, as other comments of other users are on topic and enough food to talk about. The personal information is solely used in the purpose to attack this user, and not to discuss reasonable why he should or should not be admin. I do not follow the admin request page, I think other people are better in replying to such requests, but the reason I looked at the page is because someone asked for assistance to hide personal information waiting for an oversighter to hide it definitely. I looked at what kind of personal information there was, found 3 things I would consider personal and hide them. Also I noticed that this person solely came to Commons for attacking/harrassing this user and releasing personal information, and with being aware of the stalking-situation I came to this conclusion. This personal information isn't released on his user page, also not on his user page on his home project, and I think we should be very carefull with people's personal information. Greetings - Romaine (talk) 17:55, 28 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The information is, however, disclosed at wmuk:Board#Ashley Van Haeften (Fæ), a Wikimedia site. Or am I misunderstanding? Was the "personal information" Fæ's old username? That's what this implies, but that makes even less sense to me—surely an old account is perfectly germane to a request for adminship, especially with the user already disclosing his real name. NW (Talk) 18:54, 28 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
That's exactly what I meant, although I can't currently see that diff: the right to vanish implies that people won't call you with your old username or disclose it if it's kept private, unless it's an abuse not do to so (as for indefinitely blocked users, whose "sockpuppets" may be uncovered at any time); that said, I don't know what are Commons' practices with regard to right to vanish and I leave it to people who know better. Second, if those images have been deleted to keep them more private, and until they're not restored, it makes no sense to let people disclose their content: if someone wants that info to be public he should get them restored first. In the meanwhile, both infos are completely useless in the RfA: that vote made sense even without them (although I don't think such a campaign about the past of the user and his photos is something good, but that's another story). Nemo 20:21, 28 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I'm sorry, that's not at all what it means. Commons:Right to vanish doesn't exist, so I presume that we can use en:Wikipedia:Right to vanish. That page clearly states that "Courtesy vanishing is...not intended to be temporary. It is not a way to avoid scrutiny or sanctions. It is not a fresh start and does not guarantee anonymity. Any of the deleted pages may be undeleted after a community discussion. If the user returns, the "vanishing" may be fully reversed; the old and new accounts will be linked; and any outstanding sanctions and similar will be resumed." The "right" to vanish is a courtesy we give to people who intend to leave our project permanently. If the user wishes to gain additional privileges on the project, it is their responsibility to be more forthcoming than they might otherwise have to. NW (Talk) 20:43, 28 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I though it was obvious so I didn't add a link. The English Wikipedia policies don't apply here, I was naturally referring to m:Right to vanish (which seems broad enough to me), not the en.wiki version. Nemo 01:21, 31 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Romaine, I like you so don't take this the wrong way - Fae is a public user who had his real life identity revealed as part of his contract with WMUK. His public identity and private identity are the same because of a position he took freely. What he did was ask for in an out of process way to have images deleted on an old account. When this was brought up he did not contest it but tried to justify his personal ability to do so but not others. His request for oversight and rev/del is utterly abusive and should be met with a block - those tools are not here to use to cover-up something you feel makes you look bad. If we allowed deletions and rev/deletion of public content on a previous account (which can be argued as abusive for swapping accounts to begin with) to hide your previous indiscretions, then there would be a lot of people asking for deletions. Such a request verifies that Fae knew he was previously acting irresponsibly and is currently acting irresponsibly. It would be best for you to block him for disruption of the Commons community and undo the rev/del, especially when consensus is against it being anything warranting such a thing. I do not want to have to start a ban proposal against Fae for these actions, but if this matter isn't handled in a satisfactory way banning him is the only possible solution to ensure that Commons is not tainted by such utter corruption again. Ottava Rima (talk) 23:06, 28 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The relevant rationale was fully discussed during my Wikipedia RfA before which I had lengthy advice by Arbcom on how to apply en:WP:Clean start and followed their advice throughout. I am the only Wikipedia administrator to openly declare a clean start rather than covering it up. Sadly, based on the problems this has caused me, it looks possible that I may remain the only admin to do so.

Bali ultimate has now openly declared his interest as a Christian Science Monitor journalist who is researching an article about me. He has been in contact by email which has been passed to the WM-UK CEO as it contains a number of claims about myself and the chapter. On Wikipedia he has posted the same claims on my user talk page, though these have since been deleted by Oversight. -- (talk) 23:12, 28 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Fae: "I am the only Wikipedia administrator to openly declare a clean start rather than covering it up." I don't know why you keep saying this, as it's simply not true. Right off the top of my head, Cirt (since desysoped) comes to mind.67.168.135.107
ArbCom doesn't tell people to start a new account then request admin on IRC to delete images from the previous account in an out of process manner because they become embarrassing in addition to conduct/behavioral problems while serving WMUK. Trying to use ArbCom to excuse many, many policy violations and utter disruption of Commons by tricking multiple admin into abusing their ops to help you out is a bannable offense and you really need to stop trying to justify those actions because you are only making it more apparent that you consciously performed the disruption for reasons that are at odds with Commons. Unless I see an apology for you before for many false claims of harassment, outing, for manipulating admin, etc., I will put up a ban proposal because the abuse needs to stop and if you can't even recognize how horrifying your actions have been then there is no hope for you. Ottava Rima (talk) 23:38, 28 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I am sorry you are horrified, though please try to separate fact from speculation and fantasy. Your accusations of trickery and disruption are unfounded. -- (talk) 23:45, 28 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Did you or did you not ask for an image to be deleted without following standard process? Did you then claim people were "harassing" you after for pointing it out as evidence that such practices happen? Did you ask for public information be oversighted in direct contradiction of our standards? There is proof to say yes to all three, so there is no right answer for you because if you say yes then you admit to horrible wrong doing and if you say no then you are being disruptive. Either way, both result in a block and it would be better that you are blocked more than keeping this discussion going further. Ottava Rima (talk) 23:52, 28 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Perhaps we could bring this back to the original question, which was about Bali ultimate's indef block? Romaine, please take a look at the discussion on one of the en.wiki administrator's noticeboards [which provides the same information linking Fae with his previous account; details by email if required]. Note that it has not been oversighted or rev deleted. Note that no one was blocked as a result of this discussion. I suspect you may have been mislead. Now that you have more information, are you willing to reverse your block? Delicious carbuncle (talk) 03:01, 29 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

some private information redacted from the above comment. Email is a more appropriate medium for discussing such privacy-related issues. Rd232 (talk) 03:57, 30 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Romaine, as per discussion and your comments above (leaving it to other admins), I have shortened Bali's block to two weeks for harrassment of Fae. I have placed my rationale at User_talk:Bali_ultimate#Block_shortened_to_two_weeks for your perusal. russavia (talk) 07:37, 29 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

"Harassment" my fat hairy arse, Bali was bringing forth information that was highly pertinent to a discussion about awarding an admin's bit. Two weeks is far too long, it should be an unblock for an out of process block that should never have happened in the first place. And how about putting the DelRev info back whilst you're at it? This block is total baloney and smacks of cover-up on Fae's behalf. --Fred the Oyster (talk) 06:13, 30 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Fred, could you explain your suggestion of a "cover-up" in more detail or withdraw the comment? This appears to be a serious allegation either against me or Romaine. Thank you. -- (talk) 07:07, 30 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I said it "smacks" of a cover up, not that it is one. But as it's you I shall explain. Bali was asking awkward questions that you refused to answer (as of course is your right) the next second Bali is indeffed and all his revisions are deleted even though they only contained facts that are in the public domain. Now try to put yourself into the position of an outsider, how would that sequence of events appear to you? --Fred the Oyster (talk) 07:14, 30 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
The "facts" in the public domain are unproven allegations. One of the "facts" being repeated in the public domain (as highlighted in my RfA) is that I have a kinky bondage sex life and there are claims that I have had sex with a man who is not my civil partner, no evidence has been supplied. I have no intention of responding to such public allegations, this does not mean that they are true or that I must be covering something up, in fact if I were to respond, this would only fuel speculation that there must be truth in these allegations for me to be concerned and I would be put in the position of proving a negative. Are you defending the "right" to repeat or repeatedly link to the detail of such allegations on Wikimedia Commons just because they are public domain without concern that this is harassment? -- (talk) 07:27, 30 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
The fact that you have just repeated the allegations yourself decries the need for them to be RevDeled and the simplest way of dealing with an allegation is to give a truthful answer then refer any subsequent questions to the truthful answer you've already given. Evading difficult questions will always, without exception, lead the onlooker to believe the worst. I am truly sorry that you find yourself in this situation, but in it you are so avoiding the issue is just going to have the effect of it snowballing. From a personal PoV I have no problem whatsoever with anyone's sexuality or what games they like to play in the bedroom. If that is you in the picture either straight out deny it or straight out admit it. In my view it is nothing to be ashamed of or embarrassed about and has no bearing whatsoever on your character. So either admit it or deny and then move on. As for the other allegations, again either admit or deny but don't evade. Evasion will always make someone look guilty regardless of whether they are or not. I am defending the right of someone to ask someone else a question, regardless of how loaded that question is, likewise I will defend the right of the questionee to not answer the question (regardless of how ill-advised that is). --Fred the Oyster (talk) 08:01, 30 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Using that logic, allegations made against chapter trustees relating to being a risk to children (as raised publicly on Wikipedia Review) would be fair to repeat against any page that the trustees were to contribute on at Wikimedia Commons. I'm afraid there is a clear line between asking a reasonable question for purposes of being held to account versus making repeated unsupported allegations with a clear intention to harass. -- (talk) 09:06, 30 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
This is where it becomes subjective, are they allegations, or are they just loaded questions? Personally I find them distasteful because the obvious under-pinning is the age old linking of homosexuality with paedophilia, and in this case a taste for 'twinks' with paedophilia. Though as much as I dislike that sort of question so long as a Daily Mail-like paranoia exists in Joe Public stupid questions like this will keep cropping up. I'm sorry but it's a fact of life, even in this day and age ridiculous paranoids will suspect any openly gay guys who come into contact with children as suspect. Though given Mr Murphy's employer I'm hardly surprised a question like this arises though. Throw religion and homosexuality into the mix and someone's going to get pissed off! So as a personal statement, if the teachers were good at their job then I would have no problem with my kids being educated by teachers who were gay, into bondage and liked twinks. After all they can't be any worse than their own father's predilections ;) --Fred the Oyster (talk) 09:47, 30 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Fæ, whether or not you have a "kinky bondage sex life" is not what is under discussion here and your attempts to reframe the issue into an attack on yourself and your marriage is quickly going from tiresome to offensive. You self-identified on your previous account here on Commons, although that self-identification is now rev-deleted or oversighted (and the logs don't show who did that for you). This has absolutely nothing to do with your sex life or your marriage. [redacted unnecessary references to deleted content Rd232 (talk) 14:50, 30 December 2011 (UTC)] I can understand that you may find revelations of your actions embarrassing now that you are openly associating the account Fæ with your real name, but the blame is yours to bear. Delicious carbuncle (talk) 14:43, 30 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The fact that it is perfectly possible for you to make your point without referencing the personal information Fae wishes deleted for privacy reasons makes an insistence on raising it a form of harassment. Do so again, and you will be blocked for it. Rd232 (talk) 14:51, 30 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I don't wish to be blocked but I feel that you have substantially altered the sense of my comments by your redactions. Perhaps you can set some ground rules so that I can make comments here without having them altered beyond recognition. What may I not say here? Is the issue that I am describing the content of the now-deleted images? Is it that I am expressing an opinion about the identity of the person depicted in those images? Why would you remove comments because they are "personal information" if Fæ denies any connection to them? That seems Kafkaesque. Fæ is making very broad accusations based on off-wiki comments, yet when I make statements based on on-wiki information (that you can verify), my comments are censored. Odd. Delicious carbuncle (talk) 15:16, 30 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Well, yes, it would be pointless to change them insubstantially... :) But the unaffected parts are meaningful and understandable without the redacted bit, I think. It ought to be obvious, but OK, let's be clear: it was describing the contents of images deleted for privacy reasons, including claiming an identity of the depicted person. Accurate or no, this is not appropriate, and it's not necessary. As for other accusations: there's far too much going on here for one RL-busy admin to keep up with it all. If there's something specific you want me to address (or otherwise discuss), you can ask onwiki or by email as appropriate; or post at AN. Rd232 (talk) 17:02, 30 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
In your zeal to protect another editor from what you characterized on my talk page as "harassment", you seem to have single-handedly rewritten the rules of discourse here. I did not "claim an identity", I gave my opinion about the identity of the person in the images, which is perhaps a subtle point, but an important one. I am not unsympathetic to the situation in which Fæ finds themselves, but my original comment was intended to show who is really responsible for the situation. I did not upload those images. I did not include the images in Wikipedia articles. I did not cause those images to be deleted out-of-process. Please do not claim that you are too busy to address Fæ's gross personal attacks while you manage to find time to police my comments in the same threads. It is disingenuous at best.
If you are threatening to block me for describing the contents of "images deleted for privacy reasons", is this description of one of the deleted images acceptable: "I have never made any comment or recommendation as to the deletion process to be followed for the man in suspension photograph which at various times has been claimed to be of me or taken by me"? What part of policy would cover such a block? What part of policy covers deleting images "for privacy reasons"? Can you please provide me with a list of images uploaded by the user account in question and subsequently deleted so that I may ask the deleting admins their reasons as you suggest? Delicious carbuncle (talk) 17:50, 30 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I'm too tired to answer all of that now, but (i) Commons:D#Privacy is the relevant deletion policy. I guess you missed my discussion of this with Fae in the RFA comments section. (ii) "disingenuous at best"? -> AGF. I'm just focussing on what seems the most important and urgent in the circumstances. If there are specific things you want dealt with (that you can't handle directly with Fae), ask. As for your request regarding a list of deleted images: I'm really puzzled as to what the heck you expect to achieve with this. Note that COM:D#Privacy permits speedy deletion, and so the complaints about "out of process" are moot. Rd232 (talk) 01:38, 31 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry if I wasn't clear - I would like all of Fæ's gross personal attacks struck. Anywhere that he has attempted, without evidence of any kind, to link me to canvassing, tag-teaming, threats made by other users, etc. Feel free to email the list of deleted images to me if that is more convenient for you. Please come back when you are less tired and able to provide fuller answers. Thanks. Delicious carbuncle (talk) 02:47, 31 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Well that was part of the reason I blanked the RFA, because claims were made about various people. Some of the relevant discussion has also been hidden at COM:AN. If you want me to actually do something, you really have to take the trouble to point out what it is you're talking about. As for the list of deleted images - you've not persuaded me that there's anything useful you can do with such a list. If you don't want to try, ask someone else. Rd232 (talk) 03:00, 31 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I believe the suggestion to approach the deleting admins was yours. I am simply asking for your help in doing so. I'm not sure why providing that information would be at all contentious. If I provide you with a series of diffs what will you do? Strike them for me? Rev delete them as you have done with my comments? Delicious carbuncle (talk) 04:00, 31 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
You don't need my help - there are 260 other admins. And I'm not going to reveal deleted information if you don't persuade me that there's a constructive purpose. What do you hope to achieve by contacting the deleting admins? As to the diffs - action, if any, depends on context (as always). Redaction is only an issue for private information, so that's unlikely, and striking implies a retraction by the author of a comment. Anyway, you can hardly expect me to say what I'll do without knowing what you're talking about exactly. Rd232 (talk) 08:35, 31 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I thought the purpose was quite plain - to review the circumstances under which the images were deleted. It was your suggestion, I believe, that I contact the deleting admins and I had hoped that you would assist me by providing a full list of images uploaded by [Fae's old account Rd232 (talk) 12:43, 31 December 2011 (UTC)] and subsequently deleted. You have clearly bought into the harassment and threats narrative used by Fæ to avoid inconvenient questions. My apologies to Romaine for abusing their talk page. Delicious carbuncle (talk) 11:55, 31 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
You're right, this would be better on your talk page. I'll reply there. Rd232 (talk) 12:43, 31 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Authors request, PD-text does not apply, copyright violation?[edit]

Hello, I wanted to ask you about the deletion log of this file which I uploaded, and then nominated for speedy deletion because there was a duplicate upload in SVG format. My question is, why did you say the PD-text didn't apply and it was a copyright violation - when this file is not?

The same images and templates were used, so I'm not sure what you mean. Regards Editor182 (talk) 23:34, 12 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Editor182, When I see a file, I do not check wether or not there are other files similar, but judge a file based on the rules we have. In my perception of the rules this image is too much creative work that PD-simple/PD-text can't be applied here. A lot of other files with logos of Microsoft have been deleted in the past. The file you link to only exist here since December 2011, very much recent. Perhaps we can ask other users to comment this file wether or not it can be allowed under PD-simple. Greetings - Romaine (talk) 00:20, 13 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Deleting pages[edit]

It looks like you perform file deletions whereupon Deletion-code is applied by users. What can explain that you so far haven't deleted File:Ashdod.jpg although the Speedy code had lain there as long as 5 hours when you were doing other deletions such as Category:Beit Govrin? Best Regards, Orrling's talk 03:38, 14 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Orrling, Yes, I handle many of the speedy deletion requests. Every day I check the deletion categories to see if I can help other users with performing their request. I start mostly at the top of a category and then work down, until I am out of energy to handle all pages with a fresh view and to make sure I do not make mistakes. That means that I do not do all files, I only do those which I am sure of they can be deleted and until I am tired. If I should have attention to one request in particular, please let me know. Greetings - Romaine (talk) 10:16, 14 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
You're very kind. Thank you very much. Orrling's talk 10:28, 14 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Exif informatie bewerken[edit]

Hoi Romaine,

Groetjes - Romaine (talk) 15:18, 28 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Dump trucks in India[edit]

Hello!

Your deletion of Category:Dump trucks in India was incorrect and contra Commons category rules: a "single-file-category" qualifies no category for deletion. I have restored that category. Regards, High Contrast (talk) 18:15, 31 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hello High Contrast, I am fine with restoring, but at the moment I deleted the category, it was empty. I never delete categories with pages in them. Greetings - Romaine (talk) 23:09, 31 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
OK, I see. I just wanted to know what happened. Thanks for clearing it. Keep on keeping on! Greetings, High Contrast (talk) 13:58, 1 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Incorrect name?[edit]

Hi,

can you tell me why this should be an incorrect name? --Alabasterstein (talk) 14:48, 8 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Beside of this: from architectural point of view of this it is not reasonable to put all mast, lattice and concrete towers in one category. --Alabasterstein (talk) 14:56, 8 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Hello Alabasterstein, Please see the discussion on: Commons:Categories for discussion/2012/01/Category:Communications towers. If you think this matter isn't discussed well enough, you can discuss this subject via Commons:Categories for discussion. I only try to execute the results of discussions, the discussions itself I like to leave to other users. Greetings - Romaine (talk) 16:06, 8 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Old categories of towers[edit]

Hi. I noticed, you deleted many categoires like "Radio towers..." and "Television towers..." However, this is a typical case that all old categories should be changed to soft redirects (Seecat), not deleted. Firstly, the new names are relatively complicated - that's why the simple and intuitive old names should remain as redirects to the new ones. Secondly, many articles and categories of wikipedias link to the old categores here. We have no tool for automatic fixing them and that's why all old categories which are not mistaken but only replaced should be redirected, not deleted. Thank You. --ŠJů (talk) 14:51, 8 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hello ŠJů, I do not consider them as complicated. However I think that it is a big problem that there is no tool for checking the links to them on other projects. However, I do not think that this problem can be solved by just letting categories still exist with the mentioned template, and with in mind that people often do not look what is on a page (such as that template) and still use them if a category still exist. Putting seecat on a page isn't considered on Wikipedia's as a name that should be changed on the articles, a deleted category is. Also many categories are deleted and renamed, and to almost every category in the subjects I have been working on on Wikipedia, is a link to from Wikipedia. That a category is an old category doesn't say much about the links to that category. If you really want to keep links to categories intact, almost every category that is deleted must get seecat and I do not consider that as workable. What I do consider as workable is to make sure that in the deletion summary a link is put to the new name of the category so that users can navigate to the wanted category. Also keeping a category in existance with that template makes it for tools harder to check werther or not a category exists. There is a huge need for a tool/bot to check for non-existing categories on Commons that is linked to, a "shadow-solution" to use seecat doesn't help with that at all. I try to make sure there is link to the category with the new name so that users easily can find the new category. Greetings - Romaine (talk) 16:26, 8 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Just as the deleted/non-existing files-category: it took some time before it existed, this still needs to be arranged for category-links to Commons. Romaine (talk) 16:30, 8 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
It would be a piece of cake to run on the wikipedias a bot that checks every now or then the outgoing commonscat links. It is there that they need to be corrected anyway. --Foroa (talk) 16:42, 8 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I even want to do much of those corrections myself. To me, the user who creates such tool should get the tech/toolaward of the year! Romaine (talk) 00:36, 9 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Duplicate processing[edit]

Regarding this [4], universal replace|Kurma Avatar of Vishnu. ca 1870.jpg|File:Kurma, the tortoise incarnation of Vishnu.jpg|reason=exact, or scaled-down duplicate

Files File:Kurma Avatar of Vishnu. ca 1870.jpg and File:Kurma, the tortoise incarnation of Vishnu.jpg were never at any stage exact duplicates nor scaled up/down versions of each other. It does not matter that two images might be photographs or scans of the same original, we keep both. --Tony Wills (talk) 23:10, 1 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Because...? Romaine (talk) 23:32, 1 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
In the case of different photographs or scans of the same image there is going to be technical differences in the resulting image (quality, resolution, lighting ...) and we leave other wiki projects to decide which they prefer. Usually there will also be differences in author/photographer/uploader and licensing, and it is certainly an advantage to have something to fall back on if something turns out to be wrong with one of them. If there were just a case where the same source image being uploaded here in two different resolutions, then of course we don't need both (because the wiki software scales automatically). In this case not only are there differences in the original upload, but the subsequent processing has resulted in much different images in choice of colour correction etc. We don't make judgements about which is best for a particular use, the users on other wiki projects do. And a resolution difference between versions is not particularly important for most wiki uses as it will probably be scaled down anyway.
If we want to delete one of them we need to use another process (eg normal deletion request, where it can be discussed). Duplicate is a speedy process for making uncontroversial deletions.. --Tony Wills (talk) 00:10, 2 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Regarding deletions[edit]

Hello,

You recently deleted two files, File:2011-1795 - Flickr - Slut Jennifer Ann for reposting.jpg and File:11-clamped balls and red panties - Flickr - Slut Jennifer Ann for reposting.jpg, with the rationale "sexual content, not for use". This is not a valid deletion criterion, and even if it were, it should go through a deletion request. I've set up an undeletion request.

Please establish grounds for deletion through consensus next time.

Thank you. Handcuffed (talk) 23:21, 15 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

 • I do not care if they are undeleted, but I certainly do consider them as mentioned with the third bullet ("Was uploaded with the intent to be used solely for purposes of vandalism, personal attacks, and/or spamming"): putting someone's balls on Commons seems not serieus and thus vandalism to me. Erfgoed[edit]

I don't understand your request or don't see the problem, asking in Dutch is probably easier. Romaine (talk) 00:37, 8 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Romaine! Thanks for letting me know of things that yet haven't been translated into Bangla. I'd like to inform you that, unfortunately a few days ago, the Wikimedia Bangladesh have decided to postpone the WikiLoves Monuments 2012 that was supposed to be held. This had to be done because we still haven't got the legal identity as a non-profit foundation in the country which we hoped that we would get by September 2012. Another reason for the decision was shortage of volunteers. We'll soon get the legal identity (we have got official approval from the Wikimedia Foundation October last year) in Bangladesh and we hope to hold the WLM 2013 successfully. Thanks. - Tanweer Morshed (talk) 06:24, 9 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

WLM Canada[edit]

Hello Romaine,

I noticed you renamed our page adding "in" to the title. One of the reason why we chose that title, is because this page is both in French and English using LangSwitch... without the "in", title can work for both languages.

Do you mind if I put it back like it was please. I'll check "What links here" and change all the links to avoid over redirecting. Thanks for understanding. Benoit Rochon (talk) 17:07, 1 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

wlm problems[edit]

Hi Romaine, can you please check Campaign_talk:wlm-at (and mentioned bugzilla) and WLM-is-running. It seems that your html comments for the countries are creating problems. See also this change. You can simple expand to see what is happening.

Furthermore the campaign seems to create 0 automatically, which is not a valid default (and wrong for all countries). Rillke noted that the default 0/0 coords are set by the campaign, but I do not know much about the implementation of campaigns. Maybe you can help. regards --Herzi Pinki (talk) 17:16, 2 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Wiki Loves Monuments 2013 South Africa - External link for Monument ID lookup?[edit]

Romaine,

Can an external link be added next to/under the Monument ID field on the upload form for contributors to find Monument IDs? I am specifically asking for South Africa and would like to see something like Don't know the Monument ID? Search for FullSiteName at SAHRA --NJR_ZA (talk) 19:14, 5 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hello NJR ZA, At the moment the campaign for South Africa shows above the Monument ID field this:
SAHRA-ID (http://wikilovesmonuments.co.za/wiki/Lists_of_monuments)
This is exactly how it was last year too. This can be changed if you like, but please give me then the exact way what it should show. Please keep in mind that a label with a question in it should be in two languages: English and Afrikaans (depending on the preferences of the user). You can test the current upload wizard here. Row templates for WLM on ca.wiki[edit]

Hi Romaine. There are some issues with your edit in ca:Plantilla:Filera BIC. Previous years we have used the classic upload form and it has worked fine: 1) Some people don't like the default licence cc-by-sa-3.0/es just because of its layout with a Spanish flag. This may seem fussy, but I prefer to avoid sensible matters if possible. 2) Some people don't like either the logo of WM-ES on his photos. You know, Amical is also organizising it. We included on Template:Wiki Loves Monuments country logos a country code es-cat with no logo of any chapter/thorg. There is none also for Andorra. 3) The upload wizard does not permit to select the two protection levels with two different templates: BIC and Bien Catalogado, although his is a minor issue that affects only in its wording. Finnally I am note sure if it is correct to include uselang=ca or it is better to use the default language of the user. I suggested to create a new campaign wlm-es-cat fixing issues 1 and 2, but it was not considered appropiate. For this reason the classic upload form was used heavely from ca.wiki in previous years. --V.Riullop (talk) 18:18, 23 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Vriullop, es-cat campaign created, seems to me more professional to uploaders. 1. solved, 2. solved, 3. can be solved but need some explanation about Bien Catalogado, what is its purpose? 4. uselang removed. Also the logo of the header template is during September of WLM instead of WMES. Searching through lists on ca-wiki I found more links to classic upload forms than the one I changed. But before I continue (I don't want to waste my time) I want you on ca-wiki have a choice: or everything stays the old way (and I will delete the campaign es-cat), or it all gets an update and uses the campaign to upload. This second option will result in more adjustments to the campaign to let it have all the modifications it has now. For the moment I play on save and will return to the old situation. Greetings - Romaine (talk) 20:43, 23 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for your work. I personally prefer the Upload Wizard, but I'll ask if there are any concers to switch. If there are no objections, I'll update myself related templates on ca.wiki. Difference between BIC and Bien Catalogado is most about wording on protection level and some regional variations. Since BIC template included a type parameter they probably can be merged using type=BC. In general, identifiers like "RI-" are BIC-level and otherwise are probably BC-level, so it should be no problem. Some exceptions can be fixed manually if necessary and additional parameters to link to regional databases can be added manually, i.e. when the template is used in a category page. Alternatively, I'm not sure how the campaign can deal with it, but if the monument has parameter "prot=BIC" (strictly first 3 characters {{padleft:|3|{BIC}}}) then it should use BIC, oherwise Bien Catalogado. On es.wiki I think they are all BIC. Probably it is better to merge templates, but it is quite complex and needs testing in sandbox. --V.Riullop (talk) 09:42, 24 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Finally I have migrated all row templates of monuments on ca.wiki for uploading with Upload Wizard. You can go on setting up the new campaign. I have also merged template Bien Catalogado with template BIC making things easier for people with a Lua version more flexible. Greetings. --V.Riullop (talk) 18:52, 26 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the work! Does the upload campaign work completely fine now? Or does it need any adjustments? Romaine (talk) 19:48, 26 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
It works fine to me. Just a suggestion: Coordinates are added to template Location dec but this is the camera location, it makes more sense with Object location dec as most of them will be added from lists. Not sure if it is possible to change. BTW, there are some translations to Dutch missing at Module:BIC/lang. Thanks. --V.Riullop (talk) 08:35, 27 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
It is a difficult situation concerning which coordinates template should be inserted. People can use the upload campaigns directly, pre-filled or can edit it, with all a different situation of the coordinates. This is not something to solve easy, but good to think of for next year if it is possible to improve it. What is possible is that a bot can check if the coordinates match in the lists or not, if yes using the template object location.
Done Done - I have added translations for the BIC module. Romaine (talk) 18:27, 30 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Romaine, if you have time, I would be glad if you could give your honest opinion. Hi Romaine. I am happy to confirm that we have finally a jury for Syria (the same of Jordan, as we previously discussed), anything still needed? because we have already missed a whole week. Thanks! --aad_Dira (talk) 20:16, 8 September 2013 (UTC).[reply]

Why those edits? Selflinks are unuseful, annoying and sometimes misleading. Why should a preview be shown as link to the current file? --Ricordisamoa 00:23, 11 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, This template isn't shown only for file usage on files itself, but informs users also about usage elsewhere. And there the problem occurs with the license in many cases. Also Wikimedia has as goal to promote re-use, which is very difficult if the file page can't be visited. Romaine (talk) 18:48, 11 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]
But could the links not appear when included on the file page? --Ricordisamoa 19:03, 11 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Wrong template in WLM upload wizard[edit]

Hello Romaine,

Quarz of the German WLM team pointed me here. The upload campaign for Hesse (de-he) is setting Template:Kulturdenkmal, while there is the specific Template:Kulturdenkmal Hessen which is already widely used and (even more important) integrated with ErfgoedBot. Right now, we don't get any suggestions for missing images (you know, the lists of images of monuments that don't have a picture already) and therefore it's quite difficult to add the new images as quickly as possible.

If you could change the campaign (the template was used both in 2011 and 2012) that would be very helpful. Afterwards, I would initiate a bot run to fix the already uploaded images in order to clean up. Thank you very much!--Cirdan (talk) 07:16, 15 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Cirdan, Done Done - if you can run a bot great, otherwise let me know and I will run one. Romaine (talk) 12:48, 15 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]
PS: Keep in mind that it is better to use ... and not (or something else) as I got indicated that this causes also problems for the databasebot. Romaine (talk) 12:49, 15 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you very much! If you could do a bot run, that would be great, otherwise I will try to find someone. (I'm quite familiar with both bot and database, since I was one of the maintainers in 2011 and did some work on it last year, but thanks for the reminder!)--Cirdan (talk) 16:04, 15 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]
What should the bot do with files without the identifier template on file pages of monuments in Hesse? Romaine (talk) 16:25, 15 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]
The bot should just add . That will sort the file into Category:Cultural heritage monuments in Hesse without ID and as more IDs become available (that will take more than a decade), we can then go through and add them. (Or, in the case that IDs are already available for a certain region, we can find the files without ID via CatScan and add the IDs.)--Cirdan (talk) 16:36, 15 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Done Done - Romaine (talk) 01:07, 16 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you very much! I just added the first images that were uploaded after the change in the configuration, now looking forward to all the ones with the corrected template!--Cirdan (talk) 14:41, 16 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

World Heritage List[edit]

As the "World Heritage List" is available on wikipedia (and unesco.org) and doesn't need to be created by any local wikipedians like national lists have to, it should be possible to take part with pictures of these monuments, even if the specific country isn't taking part in the contest: it's world heritage, not country heritage, the list is known. Is there any chance, maybe for a special upload-link like UploadWizard?campaign=wlm-un -- Cherubino (talk) 17:20, 16 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Cherubino, All World Heritage in participating countries is eligible, but will be mostly on the monument lists of the specific country. It is previous agreed that those should be uploaded with the national campaigns instead, and not via a special campaign. Is there a reason why a special campaign would be needed? Greetings - Romaine (talk) 19:01, 16 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, i was talking about _world_ heritage in non participating countries, as there is the defined and accessible unesco list. ;-) (Sri Lanka, Japan, ...) -- Cherubino (talk) 20:22, 16 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Those are not eligible in Wiki Loves Monuments, but you can suggest it on the mailing list or the talk page. Withon Wiki Loves Monuments 2013 there is no reason for. Greetings - Romaine (talk) 23:38, 16 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

A kitten for you![edit]

Stratoprutser (talk) 20:54, 16 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Groetjes - Romaine (talk) 21:38, 16 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

AnonMoos (talk) 20:05, 24 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

If the Belgian museums insist on uploading low-resolution images with annoyingly long filenames, and then get into a petulant snit whenever any aspect of any their uploads is modified in the slightest degree, then I'm not sure whether their alleged "contributions"[sic] really add too much to Commons. Since they don't appear to understand the basic purpose and spirit of Commons, I think they would be much more comfortable in a more closed and restricted environment, in which they can fully indulge their apparent micromanaging/control-freak tendencies. And if abrasive obnoxious personalities such as "User:MoMu - Fashion Museum Antwerp" are respresentative of what can be expected from the Belgian museum world, then in my opinion we can really do without their alleged "contributions"[sic] altogether, since the price to be paid in aggravation and annoyance would not be worth it. P.S. I still don't understand what valid policy-based reason there was for you to take the action you did on that file (other than professional jackass MoMu - Fashion Museum Antwerp throwing a mini-temper-tantrum, of course), but the lack of stated comprehensible valid reasons seems to be a consistent feature of this whole sorry affair... AnonMoos (talk) 02:03, 26 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Hello AnonMoos, Reading through the discussion on the noticeboard, most users responding seem to agree with me. If you do think that this kind of actions, reactions and such is something we take seriously, sorry, no. If you really do not understand the reason why an editwar with a museum is damaging Commons, if you really do not understand that we do not cut parts of from original works of paintings and other works of art like this photo, I think it would be the best suggestion for you to stop as this is conflicting with the goal of Commons. We are here to share the world the knowledge we have. Long file names is a problem? Why are you still active then? And clearly you do not have much knowledge about fashion, and I can assure you that fashion, in particular Belgian fashion, is also a topic that is something people want to be part of the knowledge we collect. I really hope you get insights that your behaviour and working is damaging this project and that you will understand one day why your actions are a problem. I wish you the best. Greetings - Romaine (talk) 09:39, 26 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Some admins interpreted technical details of the Commons image overwriting policy as favoring the originally-uploaded version of a file in all (or almost all) cases where there's any dispute. I'm not sure how many really specifically supported wide surrounding monochrome featureless backgrounds. And if other people's knowledge of fashion mainly leads them to insist on the absolute necessity of including wide surrounding monochrome featureless backgrounds, then I don't know that I'm overly impressed with such knowledge. We do actually upload details of artworks (paintings), and a functional utilitarian photograph of an old dress is not an "fine artwork" in and of itself -- even if it's a very nice photograph, it's still basically functional and utilitarian (i.e. with the purpose of presenting the old dress in a useful way). AnonMoos (talk) 02:39, 28 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]
P.S. It's very common here on Wikimeda Commons to crop frames from photographs of paintings, leaving the canvas alone. AnonMoos (talk) 16:05, 28 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Advice please[edit]

Hi Romaine, I ask here as I see you created Category:Cultural heritage monuments in Uruguay. The thing is, I saw another editor having created subcategories for all the departments in Uruguay, so I depopulated the parent to all the department-specific ones, leaving only unknown items in the parent. I hope this was no mistake. If so, should I notify someone (where?) in Wiki Loves Monuments about this extra categorization? Thanks. Hoverfish (talk) 19:39, 2 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Oh I see you are part of the project, so one more question. I have uploaded lots of my own photos of Monuments of Uruguay in Commons, in the last few years. Can I place some of them in the contest or do they have to be fresh uploads? Thanks again. Hoverfish (talk) 19:52, 2 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Hoverfish, Sorry for the delay, due too much stress/pressure I have missed a lot. Creating subcategories in the cultural heritage monuments category is fine. If in future more pictures will be added they can be found better. Notifying is not needed. Only monument that are uploaded in September 2013 take part in the competition. Greetings - Romaine (talk) 05:24, 4 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Monuments source[edit]

Hi Romaine, I know it's too early, but after the results of the contest was announced, some Arab contributors already started talking to me to organize WLM next year in their countries (we realize that the competition may possibly not be held in 2014). Some Palestinian volunteers already started looking for lists, they asked me about this site, it's a non-profit organization which works on making a registry for all historical buildings of Palestine (the definition the website works according to is the western bank & Gaza). Could this be used as a source for monument lists since it's non-official? Thank you --aad_Dira (talk) 22:36, 2 October 2013 (UTC).[reply]

Hernoemingen[edit]

Hoi Romaine,

Campaign WLE[edit]

Hi, Romaine. Can you help setting a campaign for WLE Andorra & Spain?

Do I miss anything? When enabled, I'll include it in the template ca:Template:Filera patrimoni natural. --V.Riullop (talk) 11:01, 10 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Working on it. Romaine (talk) 00:35, 13 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Questions/remarks/notes:
 • When uploading is completed, there is an opportunity to show a text area/banner for thanking users. Such template is still missing. In Wiki Loves Monuments this template is used: /ca, /en. For Wiki Loves Earth in the Netherlands I created this: Template:Upload campaign header Wiki Loves Earth Netherlands use. With border, so it is more visible. Can you create such template for Wiki Loves Earth in Andorra & Spain?
 • The country code for this campaign in Wiki Loves Earth 2014 is ad (Andorra). Oke?
 • The label field in the upload wizard for filling in will show ID. If this should show something different, let me know. If this change is language specific, deliver me the text in Catalan, Spanish and English (and perhaps any other language you prefer too).
 • License will be cc-by-sa-3.0.

Translation request[edit]

Hi Romaine, you had been the last one editing . I am sorry, my Dutch knowledge is zero, so I ask you to complete the maintaining of that template. You may look to the or version what's needed. Thank you sarang사랑 16:51, 12 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Done Updated according changes in the English version of the template. Romaine (talk) 22:45, 12 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you; looks good! May be you did not see that at "alternate" the perfect of "is" should be set (in English it's "was" or "has been", in German "war"). It serves to show the invalidity of another one than the current file or version. I found the paste tense of "zijn" is also "was", and inserted it. In English it is also distincted between "this" and "that", in German this is not so adviced ("jene" might be disleading); if you think it necessary, you may select someting else - or keep it as it is. BTW, you may see the usage e.g. at Ecu-proportions.svg. -- sarang사랑 09:46, 13 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

BOT request[edit]

Hi Romaine, I saw that you raised a bot able to do e.g. categorizing work. Since long I am searching such a tool for some category corrections. I can give you the details of any of these required tasks.
One is the additional categorizing of the 540 Shuowen radicals to their corresponding Kangxi radicals. I did it for the first few numbers, but there are 540! I can prepare a list of 540 items in any layout you want, with either the full name (Shuowen Seal Radical ###.svg) or the number ### of the Shuowen radical, 001 to 540, and the string or line to be inserted into the corresponding file description, which looks like "" in the case of 114. This insert can be everywhere, advancing the filedesc, preferably immediately before the license-header, or as the last line of the page. Will you do that? Have a nice Sunday. -- sarang사랑 09:46, 13 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Another BOT request[edit]

Because several requests for bot runs are unanswered since long I try it there. One run would be to insert a similar categorizing template in 214 entries of a category. In every file e.g.
Kangxi Style Kangxi Radical 123.svg should be inserted , the three occurrencies of "123" in the example varied from 001 to 214. I can prepare a list of 214 lines, if this simplifies the task. Will you do that? sarang사랑 13:00, 14 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Due busy times I can't help you at the moment. If you have the time to wait, I can help you at a later day. Romaine (talk) 17:01, 18 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you. Ok, I'll wait. Please give me a note when you can help me. Or when you tell me about another bot owner. sarang사랑 11:33, 22 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Campaign:wle-az[edit]

Hi, Romaine. I organized Wiki Loves Earth 2014 in Azerbaijani Wikipedia for natural heritage sites in Azerbaijan. But I couldn't create the campaign. Could you help to create Campaign:wle-az? Best regards, --Interfase (talk) 12:29, 13 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Interfase, Sorry for the delay. Yes I can create it, but I see someone did already. However, it contains multiple errors. I fixed those.
But 3 templates are missing:
Romaine (talk) 16:49, 18 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks Romaine. I translated these two templates. Yes there are unique ID for National Parks and State Nature Reserves in Azerbaijan. You can see them on the page of the official website of the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources of Azerbaijan Republic. But there is no any template on Wikipedia. How can I create it? --Interfase (talk) 17:05, 18 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Interfase. First of all, you need to have lists on Wikipedia with those unique identifiers. Like the lists for Wiki Loves Monuments (example), those lists need to have all rows in templates. Do you have those lists already with unique identifiers?
When those lists exist, you can create a template for it. You need of course another name, but you can look at the equivalent one for Azerbaijan for cultural heritage with Wiki Loves Monuments, Template:Cultural Heritage Azerbaijan. Another thing I then need to know is what the label above the ID field in the uplaod wizard should show. I can use for that "Abidənin kodu" what we used for WLM. Romaine (talk) 17:15, 18 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
The list of the monuments is started (there is only natural parks now, but another sites will also be added): Vikipediya:Viki Yeri Sevir/Təbiət ərazilərinin siyahısı
Şablon:AZE Natural site row
Şablon:AZE Natural site header
Template:Natural Heritage Azerbaijan is also ready.
And we cannot use "Abidənin kodu" what we used for WLM, because "Abidə" means monument. But here we have deal with natural sites. So you can use "Təbiət ərazisinin kodu", which will mean "Code of natural site". --Interfase (talk) 20:08, 18 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Romaine. The list of natural sites of Azerbaijan is ready. One more queston. Will there be a banner in Azerbaijani Wikipedia in May anounsing the Wiki Loves Earth 2014? If not, how can we created it? --Interfase (talk) 09:11, 26 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Interfase: I must reply later, but you can already look at Commons:Wiki Loves Earth 2014/CentralNotice for the banner. I can create a banner if you can provide me sufficient information. Romaine (talk) 12:38, 28 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
@Interfase: a couple of things:
@Interfase: Add info to Commons:Wiki Loves Earth 2014/CentralNotice to have a banner created. Romaine (talk) 09:36, 30 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
✓ Done. Info was added. --Interfase (talk) 12:03, 30 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
@Interfase: CentralNotice is ready. At the moment the banner contains a WLE logo at the left and the text centered, the banner has no border. Do you want to have your banner a border? Romaine (talk) 12:45, 30 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
@Interfase: I chose to give the Azerbaijan banner to have a border, if you dislike, I can restore the previous version. Romaine (talk) 14:21, 30 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, Romaine. Border is nice. I like it. --Interfase (talk) 16:31, 30 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

WLE-DE-Campaign[edit]

Romain, could you update the wle-de-campaign? - There should be Category:Wiki Loves Earth 2014 (Template: de in Germany in all uploaded pictures. Please add also category:<category=-parameter from upload-link> to the uploaded pictures. Unfortunately and due to the federal, partially even city-based jurisdiction in terms of nature-monuments and protected area there is no central ID. Would it be possible to hide this parameter in the assistant? - Otherwise: Thanks for your work! ---Ordercrazy (talk) 17:51, 30 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Ordercrazy,
The template is automatically added by the campaign but only during the contest. It automatically also adds this category.
As I wrote before, you must replace in the url &category= in &categories= otherwise it will not work!!
I would highly recommend to make use of the two digit ISO codes like: BW/<ID> . I think it is important to use it. Romaine (talk) 18:29, 30 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Wiki Loves Monuments 2014 startet in Kürze[edit]

Hallo Romaine,

November message at campaign=wlm-cz[edit]

Hi Romaine. UploadWizzard for campaign=wlm-cz displays the November message instead of the August message still. Could you help to fix it please? --ŠJů (talk) 05:39, 17 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hello ŠJů, That issue is solved now. That it shows that message is caused by a bug. Romaine (talk) 14:24, 17 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hi and thanks[edit]

Hi Romaine, it was great meeting you and thanks for all your help. Having seen the care with which you had sorted all the boxes on unloading and then having to deal with people complaining they couldn't find things after they had been moved and jumbled around . . . well, I just had to laugh! Sorry I was caught up in to many other things to have a good chat with you. Hope to meet up with you again. Fabian Tompsett (WMUK) (talk) 09:04, 20 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

@Fabian Tompsett (WMUK): those people often live in another universe until I told them that everything was sorted out and "here is it you are looking for". Everything was organized at Wednesday when I left the Barbican, they day after I was very earlier and what appeared to be happened: all stuff had been moved around to other places in the few hours I wasn't at the Barbican, how wonderful... As I easily attract people with questions, the first thing I did is to check were everything was to be able to answer all questions about it, and that worked! Getting things in the van is fun for me to do, but still I would have expected more logistical people in the busy city of London aka jungle. I am sure we'll meet again! wlm-iq Uploader for Iraq[edit]

Hi! can you create uploader for Iraq? (I left a message there: (Wiki_Loves_Monuments) , Regards.

--Mahmoudalrawi (talk) 21:05, 28 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Done Done - (iq is the country code) - However, I need more information to get it fully working! Questions:
 1. What page will be the landing page for the participants from Iraq? Please add that page here.
 2. Is there anywhere a list of monuments of Iraq? On the Arabic Wikipedia perhaps? Can you give me a link to one or more lists?
 3. Can you arrange the templates mentioned (here) in the first section behind the numbers 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 get translated into Kurdisch (ku).
 4. On the same page in the first section number 7: what is the translation of "Monument ID" into Kurdish?
 5. Can someone check if this Kurdish translation is correct: Template:Upload campaign header wlm-iq/ku?
 6. I need a translation of the CentralNotice banner into Kurdish: Commons:Wiki_Loves_Monuments_2014/CentralNotice#Text_of_CentralNotice.
Thanks! Romaine (talk) 03:50, 29 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
 • Dear Romaine, for the Kurdish lanuage, I'll contact Ravan as she is half Kurdish and she is living in Iraqi Kurdistan.

Unfortunately, there is no list of monuments of Iraq but you can check Category:Visitor attractions in Iraq or Category:Visitor attractions in Iraq or this page in Arabic Wikipedia: السياحة في العراق (=tourism in Iraq).

Thnaks for your help. --Mahmoudalrawi (talk) 19:31, 29 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

This is the English website for the Iraqi Ministry of Tourism: http://tourism.gov.iq/en/ most pages are under construction :/ --Mahmoudalrawi (talk) 22:37, 29 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for your reaction! I think it would be good to search for them or to ask the Iraqi government if they have lists of monuments. One of the key aspects of Wiki Loves Monuments is to have lists of monuments on Wikipedia so give an overview of the cultural heritage in a country. I would like to recommend to search for lists or ways to make such lists. I understand it is unlikely to have it before the contest starts, but I think that needs to be one of the goals for the team for this year and maybe also coming years.
For now it is important that your team makes a landing page somewhere. That can be a website or a page on Commons. Please add such to this table, otherwise Wiki Loves Monuments can't start.
Also thanks for pointing me to a Kurdish user. Greetings - Romaine (talk) 23:29, 29 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Dear Romaine, is it useful to use the following pages:

Regards, --Mahmoudalrawi (talk) 01:27, 30 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Yes you can use the Commons page as landing page. Then you need to add all information of the contest on that page. Can you add the link to it in this table then? Romaine (talk) 03:42, 30 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Austria[edit]

After some discussions we changed the German text for the central notice about WLM 2014 in Austria to "Wiki Loves Monuments: Fotografiere denkmalgeschützte Objekte, hilf Wikipedia und gewinne!". As Switzerland did, I entered the new text for Austria at the section "Alternative/second/third banner" on Commons:Wiki Loves Monuments 2014/CentralNotice. Please consider the new text for our WLM-banner as it will be seen by German speaking participants from Austria from the 1st of September on. The English text for participants with other languages will not change.

As in every year we will come up with a special upload campaign for the "Day of the monument" in Austria towards the end of the WLM contest. We will inform you about that as soon as the usual WLM upload campaign is running. Many Thanks for your work, kind regards from Austria. --Regiomontanus (talk) 21:39, 30 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

@Regiomontanus: The CentralNotice for Austria is created. A quick test was successful. You should check if it works at 1 September.
Second, maybe I can ask you a favour to do for me? I saw on Wikipedia that Slovenian is an official language in a part of Austria. My goal is to get more languages covered with all the translations so that as much as possible people will see the banners and notices in their own language. What translations do I need:
 1. Can you arrange the templates mentioned (here) in the first section behind the numbers 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 get translated into Slovenian (creating a subpage /sl for every template).
 2. On the same page in the first section number 7: what is the translation of "Monument ID" into Slovenian?
 3. Can you arrange that Template:Upload campaign header wlm-at gets translated into Slovenian (sl).
 4. I need a translation of the CentralNotice banner into Slovenian: Commons:Wiki_Loves_Monuments_2014/CentralNotice#Text_of_CentralNotice.
Can you arrange that for me? Romaine (talk) 23:01, 30 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

running or not?[edit]

Hi Romaine, the UploadWizard for WLM 2014 in Austria currently says: Wiki Loves Monuments 2014 has not started yet. Wiki Loves Monuments will start in September. … Can you please check and fix. Hi Anthere, I started a page for Wiki Loves Africa already at User:Romaine/Wiki Loves Africa/2014. A page like User:Romaine/Wiki Loves Africa I generally use for generic info that is not related to a specific edition. Thanks for putting the info there, I can continue with the steps to set it up. ID wlm-cz[edit]

Hi Romaine. The page Commons talk:Wiki Loves Monuments 2014/Upload campaigns seems to be quite dead and without any reaction, that's why I contact you here.

The UploadWizzard for the wlm-cz campaign in English version contains a title of the ID field:

The index number of monuments by MonumNetu (including slashes)
 • Please, change the name of the monument database from the Czech genitive case (MonumNetu) to nominative case (MonumNet) because English does not use declension.
 • There are used two formats of the ID for the Czech monuments: the simple number (with six digits), or a compound identificator containing the countrywide ID (with five digits) followed with the former regional ID beginning with the number of the region followed with a hyphen e.g. 11249/1-2232. Such a number contains only one slash and one hyphen, never "slashes". Thus, the words "including slashes" can be replaced with "including a slash and a hyphen if contained". --ŠJů (talk) 15:32, 22 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Hi ŠJů, After the start of Wiki Loves Monuments that page is quiet as everything is arranged. My focus shifts to other places and activities, as my time is limited to keep all talk pages under view.
In the English version I changed it now from MonumNetu to MonumNet. And the text between brackets changed.
Should the Czech label also be changed? (If yes: what would be the exact wording?) Romaine (talk) 17:04, 22 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

The day of the Monuments in Austria[edit]

Coming soon: the day of the monuments in Austria with a special WLM prize. So I wrote a mail to you with the details of a special central notice, we would need for that WLM-project. This is only a reminder in case you did not get the mail. Everything is running well in Austria. Many thanks for your work and kind regards to you. --Regiomontanus (talk) 19:40, 22 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

@Regiomontanus: I haven't seen a mail in my inbox from you or about this subject recently. Ah, you send it to an e-mail address I do not use any longer due multiple problems with Yahoo. I use Gmail now. I just activated the CentralNotice banner for the Tag des Denkmals, please check. Romaine (talk) 02:47, 24 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Many thanks, the banner worked all right, I will use the other mail-adress next time. Regards --Regiomontanus (talk) 10:26, 24 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

WLA[edit]

Hello Romaine

Realized something this morning... that we did not talk about... so here is the processus... tell me if I am wrong here

 • the user see the banner at the top . He clicks on the link
 • He then goes to this page Commons:Wiki Loves Africa 2014/Participate. On this page, he clicks on the "submit" button
 • And he gets into the wizard, with that at the top [9]

Correct ?

My question is... can this one Commons:Wiki Loves Africa 2014/Participate be made available in two (or more) languages with an automatic direction (if the user see the banner in French, then he goes to Commons:Wiki Loves Africa 2014/Participate/fr. If he sees it in English, he goes to Commons:Wiki Loves Africa 2014/Participate. Thanks

Anthere (talk)

Hi Anthere, I was thinking difficult about this, but I found an easy solution. For each translated page you create, I can direct users to it. In as many languages as you like. Romaine (talk) 22:46, 26 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Wonderful. Well, for now it will be only in French and English (our personal engagement). If others come to help with translations, we could add a few more. Anthere (talk)

The day of the Monument in Austria - deadline[edit]

Hello Romaine, tomorrow is the day of the Monument in Austria. After this we should announce the upload campaign and the deadline on 5 Oct. It should not influence the normal WLM upload. Is it possible to make the banner for the day of the Monument visible for IPs from Austria too? I have sent an e-mail to your new mailing adress, containing the text for new banner. This is the last but one change for WLM in this year. I thank you that everything runs so well. Kind regards --Regiomontanus (talk) 19:00, 27 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

@Regiomontanus, Yes that is possible. I think I know the reason why it is less shown to IPs: the banner for the fundraising in Austria is blocking it. I raised the importance level. The timing of the fundraising is "ideal", sadly. Greetings - Romaine (talk) 23:18, 27 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you very much, we know from our statistics and other feedback that we will have to coordinate better with the WMF next year. I will contact you in concern of our article-competition following WLM soon. Thank you --Regiomontanus (talk) 04:04, 28 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

WLA upload link[edit]

Hi Romaine. What is the final upload link for WLA ? We would need it to build a QR code directly leading to it and I am not sure you already created that page (and if so, where to find it :)). Thanks; Anthere (talk) 10:25, 29 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Anthere, The uploadlink is https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:UploadWizard?campaign=wlafrica Or do you mean something else? I do not know how to lead a QR code to that page. Romaine (talk) 10:42, 29 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Yes ! perfect. Do not worry, I know. For example, this one leads to the participate page in English. File:Qrcode wla landing en.png Anthere (talk)

Hi Romaine

The translations in arabic for the site notice and related messages are done. Can you check ? Thanks Anthere (talk) 16:43, 1 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

WLA categories[edit]

Hello Romaine

I looked a bit at the images in particular for categories and I noticed two things

 • [10]: this image was apparently uploaded with one category (wildlife/nature), but it still appears as an image from WLA with no category. How come ?
 • I noticed that many images are uploaded with no country choice. Was wondering if that might make sense to make that selection mandatory ?
 • Last, in case people actually selected a country (such as here), I see codes for the names of countries. DZ Algeria ??? Is there a table to see which code fits with which country ?

Thanks Anthere (talk)

Hello Anthere,
 • I do not think the picture of the Cheetah is eligible as it is not food. But that it is still in the category of WLA with no category is because that category is manually added and needs to be removed by hand. I just did that for this image.
 • hmmm. I see your point. Ok.
 • If you can make a choice of which country it must have been, sure you can add it to the template. You always will have people who forget it to enter.
 • ouch. I missed that point. You are right... we can not do that....

WLA campaign[edit]

You are going to regret you accepted to help us :) <---- we have another idea...

When I announced the project on the French mailing list, I was basically told it sucked that the site notice was only visible in African countries. Was told it made sens to also see it in other places, at least in countries with an important diaspora (which is obviously the case of France). So we have been discussing that with Isla. And concluded that it would be sad to miss some participation. In particular French participation :) On the other end, as we said several times, we need to measure as much as possible participation coming from Africa itself. Sooooo, we came up with an idea... we would like to ask you if you could set up a second campaign. Its content would be exactly the same than the first one (images, texts etc.) but it would appear for French IPs (and possibly others if some people care to bug me enough because they want to add this or that country. But in a completely biased way, we would like to add France :)). I know it is not perfect science, but I think statistically speaking, most French contributions would appear from the France site notice and most contributions from the current site notice are likely to come from Africa.

What do you think ? What did we miss ?

Note that the press release has not been sent in France yet (because Wikimedia France did not want to send two press releases at the same time and was already busy with the Mois de la contribution francophone announcement Anthere (talk)

Hello Anthere, No, I have fun in helping you. I am a person who likes to help as it gives a happy feeling.
When you create a landing page specifically for France, with a more clear pointing that the photo is made in Africa, I am fine with it. When you have the landing page ready, let me know. Romaine (talk) 22:59, 3 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Romaine. Here is the other landing page: Commons:Wiki Loves Africa 2014/Participate/w. I go check the templates now. Anthere (talk)
ReHi. The templates are done now [11] Anthere (talk)
I nearly forgot... the images should be collected from that new campaign can get in the same category BUT they must have another identifier so that we can separate (even if that is not a perfect separation) images more likely to come from African contributors from those coming from French contributors). I suppose it will be through the tag Uploaded via Campaign:wlafrica2 ? Anthere (talk) 23:29, 5 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Anthere, I was at a Wikimedia conference in Cologne (next year in Strasbourg!) and had little time to do this. But now...
Done Implemented - I created a second upload wizard for France + category.
In the mean while I looked on the website and I saw a link that is wrong. On http://wikilovesafrica.org/getting-started/ you link 2x with Step 3 to [12], while you should link to [13]. The same for http://wikilovesafrica.org/fr/participer/ but then linking to [14]. The Arabic part of the website seems not finished. On Commons I already fixed these links, but I do not have access to the website. Greetings - Romaine (talk) 16:02, 8 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Great. What about launching the site notice in France now ?
I fixed the links on the site. Thanks. And yes... still waiting for contact with someone for the arabic version. But that's ok. Anthere (talk)

I just saw it on Wikibooks ! Good news... I really live in France. Thanks Romaine Anthere (talk) 17:42, 8 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

It is actually also the case for Liberia. See https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Liberia_baboon_worms1.jpg

Hi Anthere, The reason is simple: this is what happens when users edit templates without understanding them first. I fixed it now. Greetings - Romaine (talk) 03:12, 26 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks :) Anthere (talk)

Hello Romaine,

I wanted to thank you for offering to help with the File metadata cleanup drive on Commons. We now have numbers to measure the amount of Commons files missing machine-readable information. Most of the files here have a license template, but there still about 500,000 remaining files (out of 24 million) missing an Information template, and that's where your help would be invaluable.

We're currently trying to find groups of files whose description pages are alike, so that we can use bots to automatically take that information and put it into an information template. If you still want to help, it would be great if you could look at the list of files and see if you can find such groups. You can also use the no_information tool to limit the results by uploader, or the first characters of the file name; this can help identify batch uploads.

Once you find groups of files with information in the same order or format, you can add a section to the bot requests page, so that a bot can go through them and fix them all automatically (or you can do it yourself if you have a bot, or with VisualFileChange).

In 10 days, we've already managed to add information templates to over 10% of the 500,000 remaining files. I'm hoping you can help us keep this momentum and get through the rest so we can get rid of this backlog once and for all :)

Thank you, and I wish you happy end-of-year holidays if you celebrate them! Guillaume (WMF) (talk) 19:12, 23 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Year-round function of wlm campaigns[edit]

Hi Romaine. The WLM contest is great not only for the fact thet it generates some winners etc. but first of all as a motivation which inspired us to create permanent lists of monuments and year-round tools for uploading and processing of photo flow. I think, the headers of the upload form should be more adjusted to their permanent function.

The contest header (e.g. Upload campaign header wlm-cz) enables to include useful instruction, links etc. related to the specific local/item campaign, lists, categorization etc. However, the year-round header is only universal, a specific campaign header is not possible (as I know). However, we would like to give some specific instructions even during non-contest months.

The second problem is that we have some "August" header and some "Finished" header (appropriate for October or November) but we need also some neutral headers for the next months. The 2013 situation that the "Finished" header was displayed even in August was not well.

I would propose to separate every campaign header to two ones: a permanent campaign header (with permanent instructions for the specific campaign) from the contest header (which would include only the contest information - something like - and can be even empty during the rest of the year). --ŠJů (talk) 11:34, 30 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Verzoeken beveiligde pagina's[edit]

Hallo.

Template:Neutral:
fy = Neutraal

Template:Support:
fy = Foar

Template:Oppose:
fy = Tsjin

Hi,

Could you create Campaign:wle-fr with this code User:VIGNERON/Campaign:wle-fr (and before can you check this code because I'm not sure I did it right) ?

Campaign and Site Notice: WLE-AT[edit]

We created an upload campaign for WLE Austria. Could you please chack it. I sent you e-mail with details concerning the upload campaign and site notice. Regards from Beppo. --Regiomontanus (talk) 11:38, 28 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Beppo, Based on what I see in the mail and on Commons:Wiki Loves Earth 2015/CentralNotice I think it is sufficient information provided. I will come back to you when I need to know more. Thanks! Romaine (talk) 01:39, 30 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Romaine, can you please check: Campaign:wle-at-glt still says Has not started yet. While other sub-campaigns seem to work fine. thanks --Herzi Pinki (talk) 21:15, 1 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Now it seems to work. (It was also saying WLE 2014 hadn't started.) -- Rillke(q?) 21:42, 1 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Although I have no idea what you have changed, now it works. thx. --Herzi Pinki (talk) 22:03, 1 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Maybe it was the null-edit against the campaign page. -- Rillke(q?) 01:12, 2 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Campaign wle-cat[edit]

Hi, Romaine. Can you refresh Campaign:wle-cat? It shows 2014 and the Armenian flag. Template:Upload campaign header wle-cat and Template:Upload campaign header wle/layout have been updated. --V.Riullop (talk) 14:31, 7 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Help with special campaign[edit]

Hello Romaine, the colleagues of WMAT (@Banfield: ) contacted me to help them out with this new campaign: Campaign:AHPBaires. The particularity of this campaign is that only third parties material is required, no own works, therefore "ownWorkDefault": "notown", which works and restricts the available licenses to third party licenses. What doesn't work though is to restrict the available third party licenses. WMAT would like to use PD-old-70 and PD-AR-Photo, but actually I find no way to restrict the licenses to any others (also popular ones like CC-BY-SA). Actually I came to the conclusion that there is something buggy here. As I don't come further with this I was wondering whether you can have a look into this issue. Thanks for your time! Poco2 09:01, 31 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

If I remember it correctly there is a restriction in the software somewhere that prevents the use of license templates that have not been approved. With Wiki LOves Monuments I have seen it happen once that a lciense wasn't detected either because of this. To solve this, the thing I would do is file a bug at Phabricator with especially described why a certain license must be possible to be used. Greetings - Romaine (talk) 13:23, 31 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for your feedback Romaine, will do so. Poco2 16:14, 31 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Addition to WLE Austria site notice 2015[edit]

Hi Romaine, for the last few days for WLE in Austria until 30 June 2015 the site notice should have an addition to text.

Juni 2015.
 • English (now): Wiki Loves Earth in focus during May and June. Discover nature, take photos, help Wikipedia and win!
 • NEW: Wiki Loves Earth uploads only up to 30 June 2015: Discover nature, take photos, help Wikipedia and win!

Please, could you change the text as soon as possible? We also wrote a mail to you. Thanks! Regards from --Regiomontanus (talk) 14:32, 22 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Where did you move my FoP-censored gallery? I can't find it anywhere now :( --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus Talk 02:35, 26 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I am sorry I have disappointed you. I considered that two places for mentioning files is not handy, also that the overview I created, intended to get about 3 blacked-out files for each country, was more extensive. Therefore I looked which files from your gallery were not in the overview and added them there, so I merged the gallery in my overview. I also considered this talk page more suitable for a list of the files. I am sorry that it is nor completely according to the idea I had, but I am happy you want also an overview of files per country. Greetings - Romaine (talk) 23:51, 26 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Hi Romaine! Just a question, when the banner will be active? --Davidpar (disc.) 12:37, 30 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Vragen[edit]

Groet, --Lidewij (talk) 20:52, 7 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Der WLM-Countdown hat begonnen[edit]

Hallo Romaine,

WLM15 in Macedonia[edit]

Hello Romaine. I have just made all the neccessary pages, templates and categories (I hope) for WLM15 in Macedonia. I see that the Upload campaign doesn't automatically respond to that, as it still tells me that we aren't participating. I assume it needs doing something there on your behalf :) Thanks a lot in advance, and cold I please ask you to see if there are things missing or something more that needs to be done by me (the organisier of WLM15 Macedonia? Thank you a lot. --B. Jankuloski (talk) 14:35, 15 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hello B. Jankuloski, Yes, I have two do a couple of things before the upload wizard shows the right banner, including some invisible tricks. But the upload wizard should now show the right banner. Please check. So far I can see is everything ready what needs to be ready now. Please read the requirements, so you know what needs to be ready before 1 September.
A question I have left is if there are anywhere lists of monuments from Macedonia on Wikipedia? If yes: where? Romaine (talk) 12:16, 17 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Comment Hello Romaine. The landing page works fine now. The list of monuments ("Список на споменици") and their codes ("Типски кодови на спомениците") is here, on the equivalent page at mk.wiki. I also updated the licensing there, so now it says CC BY-SA-4.0. Should I also put this large list of monuments on the Commons:Wiki Loves Monuments 2015 in Macedonia, or should I just link it? Cheers --B. Jankuloski (talk) 14:30, 17 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hi B. Jankuloski, Thanks for the license update! On the list page I fixed the upload link. Linking to the list of monuments at such is fine, but I miss a little bit the table format we recommend for lists. See for example: Commons:Wiki Loves Monuments 2015 in Malaysia. When people click on the icon in the last column, the info from the list, including ID code, is used in the file page. More explanation is on Commons:Wiki Loves Monuments 2015/Lists of monuments. If you need help, just let me know. Greetings - Romaine (talk) 05:33, 23 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
PS: B. Jankuloski: Please keep in mind that the license in the upload form is CC BY-SA-4.0. If participants change that to another free license, that is also allowed in the competition, but not provided in the form (to keep it easy). Romaine (talk) 17:41, 23 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Comment Hello Romaine. Several days ago, I wrote to you about the approved request for extension of WLM 2015 in Macedonia until 15 October. I just want to make sure that you got the message, and reflected the new date in all places that are under your control. Thanks a lot! -B. Jankuloski (talk) 12:11, 24 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you. --Voll (talk) 18:58, 22 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Romaine, what does the mentioned category mean? What is broken in these files? --Arnd (talk) 18:00, 27 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Arnd, A category is missing, is the message of this category added. In 2011 a system was developed by the German organisers of Wiki Loves Monuments to categorise uploaded images. They decided to have participants add in a field a Stadt or Gemeinde and a template checks if a cultural heritage monuments category for that city or municipality exists. If the category does not exist, this category is added to the file instead. Images that are added to this category should be added to one of the categories for municipalities instead (see here: Category:Cultural heritage monuments in Thuringia). If already one category is added with the name Cultural heritage monuments in ..., then the error category can be removed without doing anything. (Often people add a category, without removing the error category.) This system is still in use and used for multiple states in Germany. Romaine (talk) 15:19, 28 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks Romaine for the explanation. (1) As in many many other categories it would be helpful to have such information as a category description. (2) What happens with objects that have a separate category such as Category:Schloss Kromsdorf which itself is in Cultural heritage monuments in Kromsdorf. Is it then requested to have each photo additionally in the latter category? See File:Schloß Kromsdorf an der Ilm, Schloßpark, Südmauer.JPG. --Arnd (talk) 18:35, 29 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Arnd, 1. I agree. 2. In the case of Schloß Kromsdorf the error category can be removed as it is sufficient categorised. Romaine (talk) 11:39, 30 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Local cultural heritage template[edit]

Hi, Romaine! I have tried to load WLM2015 image and get such description field at file information page:

 • description=6709

Why it doesn't use local template name? It should be

 • description=6709

Where I/you could change it? Thanks. --Voll (talk) 11:59, 30 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Voll, Yesterday I was looking for lists of monuments in Latvia and found them, after that I implemented the template Mantojums in the upload wizard. So it should work right since yesterday. Greetings - Romaine (talk) 12:05, 30 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I have checked the uploading now, the wizard works perfectly. Thank you. Five hours to start. ;-) --Voll (talk) 19:06, 31 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

WLM-BG[edit]

Good morning :) I see that you see that we have made quite of a progress yesterday. How do you evaluate the current chances to have the contest ready for start on 1 September? :) I still have to work on the landing pages, but this is the job for today, Any advise about it will be welcome. Spiritia 06:16, 31 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Spiritia, Besides the landing page, everything seems missing. So you can start at 1 September if you get the landing page ready.
The building of the infrastructure had been done for a large part, so it was easy to convert it in the right format. It now also includes automatic categorisation.
I saw you had some sort of check in mind. I removed that option as that is not necessary. I can suggest instead that (if you would like) the upload wizard automatically adds a check category so you can check after uploading and remove the check category when check. Shall I implement that?
But overall: nice work!! Greetings - Romaine (talk) 06:20, 31 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, I thought that if we subcategories by province, it will be easier for maintenance on a later step. And I saw Germany has proceeded this way.
Can you please see again the Table of provinces. Now there are two provinces with code 08, and code 26 is missing. I guess that you consider Haskovo as 26, but I am not completely sure whether that's true.
Thank you for the nice words, if it wasn't for Lord Bumbury, Maymay and especially StanProg, we wouldn't have been so far. Spiritia 06:25, 31 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
The Germans have a worse situation, not a good example. And they have multiple states in the country with every state its own system. Therefore it is there split by state. In most other countries this is not the case.
Yes, that should have been 26. It should be identical to the ISO link in the header of the table. I fixed it.
But still, if you want a check category, mostly another system is used. Just let me know. Greetings - Romaine (talk) 06:32, 31 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
We had a very positive experience with the WLE-BG earlier this year, when (on a daily basis and semi-automatically with the help of Cat-a-Lot) we categorized the uploads day by day (Category:Images from Wiki Loves Earth 2015 in Bulgaria by day). That was quite helpful for maintenance purposes. Is it possible for you to make the upload script add a similar daily category during the upload? Spiritia 07:37, 31 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Romaine, can you please check something weird. Here, Commons:Wiki_Loves_Monuments_2015_in_Bulgaria/List_of_monuments/Sliven, the first monument has ID "g-40". However, clicking on the upload photo link, it uploads an image with a slightly different ID "20/g-40": File:Wlm-bg-2015-test-image-for-deletion.png. I cannot find from where to fix it, can you please do. What do you think about the landing pages: in English and in Bulgarian. Almost ready we are. Spiritia 19:07, 31 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Spiritia, The number before the code is intended, because in your original setup you used also an indicator per area. In this way it is very easy to determine from which area the monument photo comes from. So the 20 is the same as the codes as described here: ISO 3166-2:BG.
As you have used it for Wiki Loves Earth, I also created an check category for Wiki Loves Monuments in Bulgaria: Category:Images from Wiki Loves Monuments 2015 in Bulgaria by day.
The landing pages look fine to me. They do not need to be 100% finished at 0:00 1 September. Thank you for the great work!! :-) Romaine (talk) 23:21, 31 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Good morning, Romaine! I've just clicked on the central site notice on https://bg.wikipedia.org and the link was pointing to http://wikilovesmonuments.de/?pk_campaign=Centralnotice, apparently because I have a German IP address. Could you change it to https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:%D0%A3%D0%B8%D0%BA%D0%B8_%D0%BE%D0%B1%D0%B8%D1%87%D0%B0_%D0%BF%D0%B0%D0%BC%D0%B5%D1%82%D0%BD%D0%B8%D1%86%D0%B8%D1%82%D0%B5_2015_%D0%91%D1%8A%D0%BB%D0%B3%D0%B0%D1%80%D0%B8%D1%8F for everybody? Thank you in advance, --Лорд Бъмбъри (talk) 06:51, 1 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Лорд Бъмбъри, The URLs are geolocated. This means that it depends on the physical location where you are from accessing whatever Wikipedia, you get the URL that points to the contest in that country. So a German speaker who is situated in Bulgaria, gets a link to the Bulgarian landing page. A Bulgarian who is situated in Germany, gets the German landing page. If you are situated in Bulgaria, and you still get the German URL, then something weird is happening. For some reason the IP address is seen as German. In the MediaWiki software is currently no possibility available to change this so far I know. Greetings - Romaine (talk) 16:17, 1 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Romaine, dear, one more problem which we just found after the first day of uploads: they categorize both in a Bulgarian and a Brazilian category: Category:Images from Wiki Loves Monuments 2015 in Bulgaria, but Category:Cultural heritage monuments in Brazil with known IDs. Can you please fix, neither me nor Лорд Бъмбъри found where to fix it by ourselves. Thank you in advance! :) Spiritia 19:44, 1 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Done Fixed - Sometimes when so much things have to be done, including last moment requests to have a country participate, I am less sharp and make mistakes. In this case I forgot to change something. I now did. It is fixed now for all images, however due caching it can sometimes take some time. A hard refresh (Ctrl + F5) or open the edit screen and saving without changing anything would solve it. Greetings - Romaine (talk) 20:06, 1 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, it's mainly my the fault that we started it so lately. Sincere apologies for putting you under additional stress! And thanks again for fixing it. Spiritia 21:36, 1 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Romaine! It's me again, sorry for bothering. How are we going to proceed with the jurying? Where and how (yes/no, 1-10, ?) shall jury members cast their vote for the images, submitted for the WLM contest? Spiritia 21:14, 5 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Spiritia, Each local team has to organise the jury for themselves. Some local teams use a tool described on this page. Greetings - Romaine (talk) 15:41, 7 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Ugh, what a nice surprise. Thanks, we'll see how we'll cope with the situation. Spiritia 19:08, 7 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Sitenotice untranslated[edit]

The WLM sitenotice for the Norwegian bokmål (no.wikipedia.org) and Norwegian (nynorsk) (nn.wikipedia.org) is still in English. Do you know who to contact to get it fixed? H@r@ld (talk) 04:52, 1 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hi H@r@ld, Thank you for reporting! I am in charge of the CentralNotice, so if something is broken you can talk to me and I will try the best I can to get it fixed.
The text in the CentralNotice depends on the language of the user set in the preferences, and for anonymous users it should be shown in the default language of the wiki. So if you have set English as language in your preferences, it should show the English text. Now, let me test to see if I can reproduce it. Test results: requesting the banner to be shown in Nynorsk (nn), it is shown in Nynorsk. Test results: requesting the banner to be shown in Norwegian (no), it is shown in English. The previous edition of Wiki Loves Monuments it had the same configuration, so or there is a bug, or something has been changed. After a change, it seems the banner text is now shown in Norwegian instead of English. Knowing what I have changed, I assume you have set Norwegian in your preferences on nn-wiki. Please let me know if the problem is solved. Thanks! Greetings - Romaine (talk) 16:42, 1 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

--Denkhenk (talk) 22:10, 14 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Licence for WLE 2016[edit]

Hi Romaine,

will you once again be the person responsible for the upload assistant for WLE 2016? In the German WLE team we just asked ourselves which license will be used this year. For WLM 2015 it was CC-BY-SA 4.0. The WLE-assistant is still switched to CC-BY-SA 3.0. We do not really care if it is 3.0 or 4.0, we just want to write a correct description of the upload process. Will the licence be changed before WLE starts? Best regards, --Blech (talk) 21:09, 16 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Blech, Thank you for mentioning the issue. However, sorry I had missed your message. But I came to the same conclusion and I changed all the licenses of the Wiki Loves Earth campaigns. This change was already done before the contest started. I must say that I would not recommend to mention the version of the license in the description, as that would make it too complicated for new uploaders. Greetings - Romaine (talk) 15:18, 6 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Category to check[edit]

Hi,

As you've seen (you thanked me), this morning, I've updated the « to check » category on Campaign:wle-fr but strangely, it still the 2015 category that appear on the uploads (for example on File:Chambon-sur-Lac - Vallée de Chaudefour 20150820-01.JPG). Did I do something wrong? Is it just a cache problem or is it something else?

Cdlt, VIGNERON (talk) 17:22, 1 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hi VIGNERON, Yes, that can be a cache problem. I think it is solved now. Romaine (talk) 15:23, 6 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Well, according to the wiki, there is some kind of code for the parks (first column, PN 01 and so on). Is this what are you talking about? Cheers --Oscar_. (talk) 17:57, 6 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Romaine, any thoughts on this? Cheers, --Oscar_. (talk) 16:09, 15 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Semi-protect page ?[edit]

Hello, is it possible to semi-protect the following page : Commons:Wiki Loves Earth 2016 in France. I did at least 3 reverts today. Thanks. Pmau (talk) 16:14, 6 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Pmau, Yes, that is possible and someone did protect the page already the past evening. Romaine (talk) 01:48, 7 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Dutch speaker needed[edit]

Hi there. On NL wikivoyage, I am trying to replace a photo of the same motif but obviously lesser quality:

User:FredTC, who is obviously not familiar with wiki principle and AGF, has reverted all my attempts to replace it in the Delhi article all the time and considering my edits vandalism. They are referring to a NL-WP rule which - as they claim - prohibits any changes on correctly written content, which I cannot imagine. Even if such rule exists there, it must be inferior to AGF and wiki, because any article may be changed as long as it is an improvement, otherwise a wiki cannot function the way we know it.

Given that, could you please explain it to this user? I don't want to be treaten as a vandal. Thanks a lot --A.Savin 15:08, 3 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

User:Rein N. now blocked me for 1 week, of course without blocking the other edit warrior. It is a clear sysop abuse. Could you please unblock me in NL wikivoyage? Thanks. --A.Savin 13:01, 5 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

No need to unblock him. I have the right to block anyone who says something like "I will not stop, unless I get a block".15 So he knows what's next.--Rein N. (talk) 08:10, 7 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]
User:FredTC is a very active editor on WT.nl. User:A.Savin only contribution is replacing photo's and his behaviour is annoying 16. He accepts no reason. Even here he continues . --Rein N. (talk) 08:33, 7 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@Rein N.: Your Rambo games are just ridiculous. Can you please state, what is wrong with my replacement of an old, poorly lightened photography? If the only thing I did wrong is editwar, then the other editwarrior deserves a block as well, because an editwar always takes two!! Otherwise you are obliged to unblock me and to apologize. But of course, it is no surprise that an irrelevant project like Dutch WV is so corrupt that sysops may block anyone they don't like. On Commons, such behaviour would result in a desysop procedure, that's for sure. --A.Savin 12:12, 7 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]
User:A.Savin, No meet to call names or accuse any one else of doing wrong. Its beyond who is wrong, who is weight. Its your action, what is the matter. It was on Wikitravel, where you did misbehave!! If you don't like it, but try to accept it like a man and don't behave like a child! --Rein N. (talk) 06:26, 8 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@Rein N.: I'm still waiting for an answer from you, what exactly I did to justify a 1 week block including revocation of talk page access and e-mail. Your latest comment is not an answer, it is an insult. --A.Savin 13:17, 8 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Info The user FredTC, who was not blocked, is continuing the editwar to keep a photo of lower quality in his article. --A.Savin 14:13, 8 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Smiley.toerist (talk) 09:07, 18 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Gevonden en teruggeplaatst: File:Wervik kus.jpg. Romaine (talk) 13:32, 19 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hello! Where was the restoration of this file discussed? The rationale you provided for undeleting it (freedom of panorama in Belgium) has nothing to do with the reason I nominated it for deletion. It was nominated and deleted because the uploader specified that the file "Can be used only in Wikipedia project" – a restriction which is incompatible with Commons' licensing requirements. I see that you removed this restriction. Where did Atlantas agree to this? LX (talk, contribs) 22:02, 19 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hi LX, I am handling some deletion requests for freedom of panorama in Belgium, that is why I cam across the deletion request. The literally sentence "Can be used only in Wikipedia project." I read in a different way, namely that due FoP it can't be used outside Wikipedia (wrong thought anyway). But re-reading the sentence can also imply what you address here. I will delete the image and remove the FoP tag from the deletion request. Romaine (talk) 22:10, 19 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Alright, no worries! Thanks, LX (talk, contribs) 22:13, 19 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Upload Campaign for WLM Ohio[edit]

Hi Romaine - thank you for all your hard work on Wiki Loves Monuments! I'd like to request an upload campaign for Wiki Loves Monuments 2016 in Ohio - I believe the proper code would be wlm-us-oh? Thank you! ~Kevin Payravi (talk) 19:01, 20 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Kevin Payravi, Created! I also created the surrounding infrastructure on Commons for you. And yes, the code is wlm-us-oh, based on ISO 3166-2:US. Two questions remain:
 • Images uploaded through the upload wizard for Ohio monuments are now categorised in Category:Cultural heritage monuments in Ohio, in line with all countries in the contest. If you think this should be a different category, let me know.
 • The second question is if you have a list of monuments in Ohio, and if those monuments have an identifier? If yes: where can I find the list, etc?
Thanks! Romaine (talk) 22:33, 26 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry for the late reply, been a busy last couple of days. Thanks for setting everything up!
 • The category looks good to me, thanks.
 • For Ohio, I've compiled a list of all National Registry of Historical Places (NRHP) sites, as well as all sites documented by the state-level Ohio History Connection via their Remarkable Ohio program:
We also encourage editors to find local-level databases and lists that are maintained by local (city and county) historical/cultural societies. Some examples can be seen here. Since most of our NRHP sites are already photographed, photographing locally documented sites would give us more to work with and allow us to explore and document important historical sites on the local level. Would these lists be okay for the sake of WLM? I can ask all editors to contribute their lists so they can be recorded and/or added to the database if needed. This is my first time getting involved with WLM, so let me know if we are headed in the right direction or if anything needs changing. Thanks, ~Kevin Payravi (talk) 06:52, 29 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Kevin Payravi, I think these lists are excellent. I only would recommend that these lists get a table format to be able to add more information and an upload link for each monument based on the ID. See also Commons:Wiki Loves Monuments 2016/Lists of monuments. But for the start it is not a requirement. Romaine (talk) 03:06, 31 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@Romaine: Great, thanks! I'll take a look at the tables and start implementing the upload links over the coming days. ~Kevin Payravi (talk) 03:47, 31 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

California[edit]

Apologies for the last-minuteness: we've gotten interest in WLM from California :) See Commons:Wiki Loves Monuments 2016 in California. In addition to NRHP sites, they'll be working to cover California Historical Landmarks, as well as San Francisco Designated Landmarks. After speaking with Lily, I believe the plan of action is to upload NRHP photos to wlm-us, and upload state/local photos to wlm-us-oh/wlm-us-ca. If wlm-ca could be created, that'd be great. Thank you again for all your hard work! ~Kevin Payravi (talk) 05:52, 31 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Talking about Structured Data on Commons[edit]

Hello Romaine,

to improve functionality for searching, organizing and maintaining media on Commons the Wikidata team wants to enable use of structured data on Commons. For this, we would like to learn from community members like you how you do these tasks on Commons.

If you would like to participate and support us, please let me know (here on the talk page or via mail to jan.dittrich AT wikimedia.de) and we will set up a date together to talk for about 30min. I often use google Hangouts for this, however, I am open for any other possibility (e.g. Skype, WebRTC…)

Kind Regards, --Jan Dittrich (WMDE) (talk) 15:42, 24 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Wiki Loves Africa[edit]

Hello Romaine !

Here is the coming back of the contest ! Getting up to speed and coming to you. We have time in front of us, but then not so much because I will be 8 days away in South Africa, and will have two short travel in November. So I would love to anticipate the technical part of setting up the banner if that is possible :)
Also because I am aware the sitenotice operations changed and I recently wanted to ask for a "short time, little controversial banner" and found myself jumping in the air moving my hands in desperate attempt to reach the attention of anyone (and if you ask... I gave up. Even though it was approved... it was apparently not set up... oh well).

Anyway... can we work on that please ? Do you have a bit of time ? Thanks

On the contest set up, we are nearly in advance this year (except design stuff, as usual).

Hi Anthere, Yes that is possible. When do you have time?
I just posted the request at m:CentralNotice/Request/Wiki Loves Africa 2016, so we will be in time.
I especially need to know what will be changing in comparison to the 2015 edition. Greetings - Romaine (talk) 04:03, 31 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Hello ! Wenesday or Thursday or Friday evening should be ok ! I have you on Skype. I'll check when you are around and you just tell if you are available or not.
I think that basically nothing will change... Anthere (talk)

Wiki Loves Africa 2016 - Images from Wiki Loves Africa 2016 in Angola[edit]

Hi, Romaine.

I'm contact you, because of recents changes happened to the Category - Wiki Loves Africa 2016, in Subcategory - Images from Wiki Loves Africa 2016 in Angola. I was adding images to that Subcategory (Images from Wiki Loves Africa 2016 in Angola), but then, i found out that the subject wasn't related to some pictures sent by me. So later, when i was trying to move the pictures to another Category, mistakenly, i removed the Subcategory - Images from Wiki Loves Africa 2016 in Angola. Sorry for that, and i hope you can fix this mistake, and forgive me for this.

Sincerely, Dorivaldo de C. M. dos Santos (talk) 13:13, 2 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Notification about possible deletion[edit]

Some contents have been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether they should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at their entry.

If you created these pages, please note that the fact that they have been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with them, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!
