First steps tutorial

Our first steps help file and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki - it is really easy.

Getting help

More information is available at the Community Portal. You may ask questions at the Help desk, Village Pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons. You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing.

Goodies, tips and tricks
  • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your Graphics abilities.
  • All your uploads are stored in your personal Gallery
  • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~
  • Use the CommonSense tool to find good categories for your files (then other people can find them too!)
  • To link to an image page, write this: [[:Image:Foo.jpg]], it makes this: Image:Foo.jpg
  • If you're copying files from another project, be sure to use the CommonsHelper

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Giusto per spiegare il mio punto di vista[edit]

Ho visto che hai revertato il mio lavoro sulle categorie, e formalmente è un'azione ineccepibile e in linea con la gestione dell'albero delle categorie, tuttavia dato che Commons ha la funzione primaria di far trovare le immagini che servono io, e non solo io, trovo molto più utile e pratico trovarmi tutta la serie di frazioni in una data provincia ben visibili ed incolonnate per ordine alfabetico, cosa che inserendole solo nelle categorie dei comuni di appartenenza tendono a sfuggire. Un conto è che un utente lavori solo "nel proprio orticello", ovvero su immagini che ha scattato lui stesso o che comunque appartengano ad un territorio che quell'utente ben conosce, un conto che ci sia chi fa del gran lavoro sporco per andare a scovare immagini orfane e non categorizzate, che alle volte trova delle regole fatte più per mettere i bastoni tra le ruote che per agevolare il proprio lavoro. Azzardo anche a ipotizzare che per un utente statunitense questo tipo di problema non lo capisca affatto, data la densità di popolazione urbana decisamente differente con l'Italia, forse lo potrebbe capire meglio un giapponese ma temo che le regole siano state create agli albori dei progetti wikipedia e quindi ideati da utenti ed admin anglofoni (con esigenze diverse e problemi diversi). Io purtroppo non padroneggio benissimo la lingua inglese per cercare di far capire questo punto di vista a livello internazionale, tantomeno riesco a dialogare in giapponese, quindi mi tocca arrabbattarmi per gestire il mio lavoro di categorizzazione come posso. Foto monte Zeda[edit]

Io volevo spostare la foto della Zeda togliendola dalla categoria "Val Grande", che ahimé è stata creata facendo riferimento all'Adamello, e attribuendola alla categoria "Parco nazionale della Val Grande" che intanto avevo creato. Ma non riesco più a trovarla: non era mia intenziona farla sparire.

Gentilissimo Le scrivo dal Parco naturale La Mandria. Le chiediamo se è possibile eliminare la foto in oggetto Ceronda ingresso parco mandria.jpg https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Ceronda_ingresso_parco_mandria.jpg

La ringraziamo del suo contributo ma la foto essendo del 2009, riporta un immagine non più corrispondente allo stato attuale del ponte sul torrente ceronda, con paratoie che ora sono state assolutamente eliminate non essendo più utilizzabili per legge.

Gentile F Ceragioli, ti ringraziamo ancora una volta per la tua passata partecipazione a Wiki Loves Monuments (WLM). Il più grande concorso fotografico del mondo si svolge anche questo settembre per documentare e promuovere il patrimonio culturale italiano, con una licenza copyright libera.

Quest'anno è doppiamente facile partecipare: gli oggetti fotografabili coprono quasi 1000 comuni in più, grazie all'adesione di centinaia di nuovi enti fra cui Roma, e alla possibilità di fotografare circa 2000 alberi monumentali. Controlla le liste di monumenti fotografabili! Carica tutte le foto che hai e magari organizza una visita presso i monumenti che ancora non hanno una foto.

Quest'oggi il Parlamento europeo ha respinto la proposta di estendere la libertà di panorama. E allora scattiamo e pubblichiamo tutte le foto che possiamo, almeno per questi monumenti per cui ci è legalmente consentito!

Hi Ceragioli, you are the only one I found who made pictures from Barge. I do not know where you reside, whether it is far away from you or not. Maybe that you will have the possibility to make some pics about the town-twinship with Annonay ? I would be really glad if sometimes these missing pictures become uploaded.
