Please help replace this outdated license[edit]

Hello!

Thank you for donating images to the Wikimedia Commons. You have uploaded some images in the past with the license PD. While this was a license acceptable in the early days of Wikimedia, since January 2006, this license has been deprecated and since October 2008 no new uploads with this license was allowed.

The license on older images should be replaced with a better and more specific license/permissions and you can help by checking the images and adding PD-self if you are the author or one of the other templates that you can see in the template on the image page.

Thank you for your help. If you need help feel free to ask at Commons talk:Licensing or contact User:Zscout370.

The images we would like you to check are:

location of tunnel complex[edit]

You have uploaded File:Alleged Al Qaeda tunnel in Zawar Kili -a.jpg and a number of similar images. (listed in Category:Zawar Kili).

Where did you read that these tunnels are in Zawar Kili? I couldn't find this information. Instead everywhere in the description it says that the tunnels are near Kandahar, which couldn't be at Zawar Kili then.

The reason why I am asking is because duplicates with higher resolution of these images have been uploaded by a bot. These duplicates can be found in: Category:Images from US Navy, location KANDAHAR, Afghanistan. If you agree I would move these images out of the category "Zawar Kili" and into the category of the Kandahar Province. Ok?--Zaccarias (talk) 23:09, 2 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

There seems to be a problem regarding the description and/or licensing of this particular file. It has been found that you've added in the image's description only a Template that's not a license and although it provides useful information about the image, it's not a valid license. Could you please resolve this problem, adding the license in the image linked above? You can edit the description page and change the text. Hi Geo Swan! Bob Bobster (bobster855) on Flickr is known to upload files created by others, marking them with licenses that he has no legal right to release them under, and failing to credit the actual authors. The account is therefore listed as an unreliable source at Commons:Questionable Flickr images.

I have initiated a review of all files taken from this Flickr user that I could find. Since you uploaded one or more of those files to Commons, you may wish to comment at Commons:Deletion requests/Files from Bob Bobster on Flickr. It is possible that some of the files should be kept, but even most of the ones that may be okay to keep need to have their authorship, licensing and other information corrected. Thank you for providing images to Wikimedia Commons. Please keep in mind that images and other files on Commons must be under a free license and should be useful to the Wikimedia projects. To allow others to use your files, some additional information must be given on the description page. Most importantly:
 • Describe what it is about in a short sentence. (What does the image show?)
 • State the author and the date of creation. If you made it yourself, say so explicitly. If it is from another Wikimedia user, link to the person's local user page. Best to use CommonsHelper.
 • If you did not create the file yourself, state the source you got it from.
 • Add a copyright tag - images without an appropriate license tag will be deleted.
 • Add the image to one or more gallery pages and/or appropriate categories, so it can be found by others. To find out where an image belongs, you can use CommonsSense.

If you copied the file from another wiki, please copy all information given there and say who uploaded it to that wiki. Use CommonsHelper.

It is recommended to use Template:Information to put that information on the description page. Have a look at Template talk:Information for details of the use of this template.

You can edit the description page and change the text. Uploading a new version of the file does not change the description of the file.

Please add as much information as possible. If there is not sufficient information, the file may have to be deleted. For more information, follow the Commons:First steps guide. If you need help or have questions, please ask at the Help desk.

Thank you.

File:The_Wire_Issue08v7.pdf has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Autopatrol[edit]

Hello. I just wanted to let you know that I have Swan/archive/2010 granted autopatrol rights to your account; the reason for this is that after a review of some of your contributions, I believe you are sufficiently trustworthy to have your contributions automatically sighted. This will have no affect on your editing, and is simply intended to help users watching RecentChanges to find unproductive edits amidst the productive ones. Defaultsort people by name[edit]

On 8000 defaultsorts added the last four days, there are cetainly a few percent to be improved. Please feel free to change the defaultsort without discussion, whenever you think it an improvement. --Havang(nl) (talk) 16:42, 30 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hello again, maybe you are interested in checking some defaultsort selections before botrunning: see User:Jarekt/a, User:Jarekt/b, User:Jarekt/c and User:Jarekt/d. Although I followed the commonscatsort and/or english wikipedia defaultsort, I have doubts about the given suggestions for among others: Category:Ali Akbar Khan ; Category:Ali Fethi Okyar ; Category:Ali Hassan al-Majid ; Category:Allah Bukhsh Karim Bukhsh Brohi ; Category:Al-Muazzam Turanshah. --Havang(nl) (talk) 20:49, 31 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
WRT to Turkish people, like Category:Ali Fethi Okyar -- I have been told that as a consequence of the initiatives of Kemal Ataturk, and because Turkey is in Europe, most Turkish people follow the general European style. I don't know if this is true.
In general I think it would be best if robots, and people who made good-faith guesses about how to alter the sorting of names from other cultures they weren't genuine experts in, just kept their hands off.
Those initial runs of the Kingbotk robot may be have guessed the correct Europeanized sort order for as many as 90 percent of the names it processed. But the time consumed in the ongoing efforts to deal with its errors has already consumed several orders of magnitude of effort than if the 90 percent it got right were not sorted by a bot, but had been sorted manually by real human beings.
And the painful after-effects of the errors of Kingbotk keep causing problems, years later.
AWB makes suggestions? You consider its suggestions? How does it arrive at its suggestions? Geo Swan (talk) 02:38, 1 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I make selections based on information already given. The problem is that people have already introduced wrong information. And the painful after-errors of wrong information remain. It's the bots who revail the mistakes. See f.i. the long list Category:Media needing categories, several people working daily since two years already to reduce this list. Sometimes, the bot is able to correct wrong info, see e.g. the 90 categorised redirects, which Jarektbot cleaned. Bots do good work, but are just bots.--Havang(nl) (talk) 09:10, 1 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Spelling[edit]

I found your name on File:Mountain passes of Afghanistan2.png, used in an article currently linked from the Main Page, so perhaps you can easily correct the spelling. "Usbekistan" and "Tadschikistan" are German spellings, or at least that's how the German Wikipedia articles are spelled. But on English Wikipedia, they should ideally be "Uzbekistan" and "Tajikistan". Art LaPella (talk) 20:41, 21 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry. Another contributor asked me to modify File:Mountain passes of Afghanistan.png -- an inferior map, one of the first I made. I made a poor choice of colors.
The other contributor thought that it would be easy for me to fix. But, actually it wasn't going to turn out to be easy, and I took too long, so they used my original, changed to colours, added more readable titles.
I think the other contributor is more likely to have their a blank version of the map with good colours than I would.
Cheers! Geo Swan (talk) 04:29, 22 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I have added my reasons on why that map should be deleted. The creator of the map claims that he has used aims.org.af. However, AIMS has only covered 24 of the 34 Provinces. Among those 24 Provinces that are covered, several of the districts do not even have a district profile. And among those that do have a district profile, several of them do not have any information on the ethno-demography of the district. For example, Paktia Province has 13 districts. Eventhough they do have a district profile under Pakita Province, the district is not even part of the province any more. In other words, they have only covered 23 of the 34 provinces only. While Balkh Province has 15 districts, AIMS has a district profile for only 3 of them. I hope it is convincing enough. Thank you. (Ketabtoon (talk) 04:51, 14 July 2010 (UTC))[reply]

Note on p. rights[edit]

Dear George,

When you upload pictures of people, particularly little children, it's preferred that you tag them with the personality rights template as I did here. Please understand, as an Admin once explained to me, how would you feel if your own child was featured in a copyright free poster that was mass published (say in 500,000 copies) because it was free. Of course, you would suffer a distinct loss of privacy or an inferiority complex. The personality rights tag protects Commons and the original photographer too from any lawsuits. Thank You, --Leoboudv (talk) 02:08, 1 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for uploading Image:Celebrating International Women's Day, Bagram Air Base -b.jpg. This image is available in a higher resolution on flickr. Why didn't you uplaod this version? Why did you choose a low res version? I am confused. --80.187.103.184 12:41, 27 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The flickreview bot will review this image.
The flickreview bot will upload the highest resolution version of this image, when it performs its tests. I let the robot offload some of this work from me.
I won't ask you to check, but if you were to check my contribution history, you would find it sprinkled with second uploads with an edit summary stating "try again", or reasonable equivalent. Due to some reason -- a problem with my server, or a problem with my computer, or a problem with my computing pattern, a significant fraction of my uploads of the larger flickr images do not complete. Hi! I saw that you uploaded a new version of the file, but the new image is completely different from the old one. Don't you think is better to have both images? Maybe adding a "_2" to this new image? Think about the explanation of the image in it.wiki, for instance: the old one refers to Lomax playing at Mountain Music Festival. This new one refers to... what? Thank you in advance. --Pequod76 (talk) 20:08, 27 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Agree with Pequod. But I assume this was just an oversight. Geo Swan, could you please upload your image under a new file name? Thanks! --Skeezix1000 (talk) 21:20, 27 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the AGF. I don't know how I uploaded over an existing image. I'll upload the image under a new name tonight. Geo Swan (talk) 23:23, 27 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Category discussion notification Category:Danube_Barge has been listed at Commons:Categories for discussion so that the community can discuss ways in which it should be changed. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this category, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for discussion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it. If the category is up for deletion because it has been superseded, consider the notion that although the category may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new category.
In all cases, please do not take the category discussion personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you!

Hello, Geo Swan/archive!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Uploading a new version of the file does not change the description of the file. This page may give you more hints on which license to choose. Thank you.

Your rename[edit]

Hello. I'd respectfully prefer if you would not edit my files like this. There's no need to sanitise Commons of all its little quirks, and there's lots of totally irrelevantly named X30391.jpg-type files for renaming. The image was well-categorised, so it's not like it would be un-findable without it. Further on, they DO look like video games, and the name was a comment on how war is becoming a bit like a computer game in some respects. The weapons officer himself made the video game quip while I was there, in fact. No offense intended to your intentions, but I prefer not to rename this. Ingolfson (talk) 04:15, 6 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I requested the rename because calling them video game consoles was misleading, whether or not they look like video game consoles is just opinion. Benchill (talk) 05:19, 6 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
An administrator added the move capability to my commons-ID a couple of months ago. I've renamed about a dozen images.
Since then I do change the X30391.jpg type files, when I see them on my watchlist. I haven't gone specifically looking for them. File:Te Kaha's Deadly Video Game Consoles.jpg was already on my watchlist. I saw the edit summary in this edit, and decided to act on it. I agreed with the requester, that the name you chose could confuse readers who were looking for video games, to think your image was of a video game -- a false positive. And it could confuse readers interested in nautical matters to not look at it, because they thought it was a video game -- a false negative.
It is interesting if the weapon's officer made this observation. Can I ask whether you considered merely putting the comment in the description -- not the image's name?
I am looking for the note from the admin who gave me the renaming right, to ask for their advice.
Would you be satisfied with a compromise name, like File:The HMNZS Te Kaha (F77)'s weapon station consoles look like video games.jpg? Geo Swan (talk) 05:28, 6 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Geo Swan. Sorry, wasn't in the right frame to think of this, because too tired. Will respond in a day or two? Happy editing meanwhile. Cheers, Ingolfson (talk) 11:29, 6 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
OK. Cheers! Geo Swan (talk) 04:11, 7 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Hi. Thought some more about this. Lets keep "HMNZS Te Kaha (F77) weapon station consoles", as I don't think making a whole proper sentence out of it works too well. And would give you the false positives that you were concerned about as well, anyway. Can you allow me a weird little quirk though, for accepting your position - can we capitalise the last three words? All my own upload files (all 1000+) have capitalised letters starting each word. Call it obsessive-compulsive (it probably is, neat freak - or I wouldn't be working on Commons!) but it would be weird for me for this one to be different. So "HMNZS Te Kaha (F77) Weapon Station Consoles" please... Regards Ingolfson (talk) 08:50, 8 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Please don't apologize for your focus on details -- a quality I share. While it may annoy family members, and friends who aren't like-minded, I think it is an excellent quality in a volunteer on the wikipedia and its sibling projects.
So, you got to visit the vessel's Bridge, and speak with the officers? I visited one of Canada's Halifax class frigates, when she was moored here in Toronto, and open to visitors. But the tour was a disappointment. I did visit the Bridge. But the ratings stationed there weren't Bridge crew, and must have been among the most junior on the ship, and weren't able to answer any questions. Most of the vessel was closed to visitors. I visited the hangar, and flight deck, and got to walk around the main gun. That was about it.
Have you written about your tour anywhere? I would encourage you to record the Weapon's officers comments in the description of this image.
Cheers! Geo Swan (talk) 17:57, 8 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the name change. Yes, a tour group of us (engineers invited via the local engineering association) got to tour the Category:HMNZS Te Kaha (F77), and the Category:HMNZS_Canterbury_(L421). Many of the photos in these two categories were taken during the tour. We had relatively free reign, and some mid-level officers to answer questions and all. Things like them telling us frankly that the wave action dampers on the Canterbury were acting up (that ship, like most of the recent NZ Navy purchases is beset by problems!) - the officer even said the dampers, if activated incorrectly, would be able to flip the ship over! Not sure if that was just bluffing the landlubbers, though. As for the discussion re the video game console - I didn't make it up, but it's been a while, and I can't remember it exactly anymore. Just that I came home and looked again at the photo and went "Yeah, that really does look like that". Ingolfson (talk) 10:22, 13 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
That is interesting. Now that we have introduced ourselves a bit I have noticed that you are a pretty active contributor. Now that I am paying attention, I see your name showing up on my watchlist pretty frequently. Cheers! Geo Swan (talk) 17:40, 13 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Ten or eleven years ago, when I was visiting British Columbia, I visited a friend of mine who worked for BC Ferries. He lived on w:Saltspring Island. We returned together to Victoria on one of the medium sized ferries. Although he worked in management, not operations, he got called to the Bridge, and I went with him. This vessel was propelled by four azipods, or Voith-Schneider propellers, one at each corner. It was steered not by a wheel, but by a pair of joysticks, only 10 centimeters or less tall. However someone had built a pair of plywood tiller bars to fit over top of them, that were almost a meter long. It was foggy, visibility about 100 meters, and the pilot was navigating electronically.
