The Dod page I took the image from didn't credit the actual copyright holder, but another page, found by Schlendrian, did. I didn't know this. I asked them how they found the other image. No reply so far. Geo Swan 17:56, 3 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Most of your uploads belong in Category:2001-present war in Afghanistan but you are wrongly putting Category:Afghanistan instead. You've been using Commons since 2005, way before me, so you should know the rules here. See Commons:Categories on how to categorize images the right way. Your images of Afghanistan should not go in Category:Afghanistan directly, they should only be in Category:2001-present war in Afghanistan because "2001-present war in Afghanistan" is in Category:History of Afghanistan and "History of Afghanistan" is already in "Category:Afghanistan". OC-1 photos from the July 27 2002 skirmish...[edit]

Three photos taken by GIs immediately following the skirmish where Omar Khadr was captured have been nominated for deletion by a contributor who I believe does not understand liscencing issues. These DoD images were published by the Toronto Star.

I pointed out that the images were uncredited.

The challenger seems to be claiming that, since the Toronto Star has a department where one can purchase rights to re-use some images they published they must own all the rights to the DoD images. Iwrote the following letter to the photo department. I've got a reply, that it has been forwarded to the editorial department:

An article about Omar Khadr, and the photo it was published with, have been removed from your web-site. The following URL is the version that (temporarily) remains in google's cache. http://64.233.183.104/search?q=cache:http://www.thestar.com/article/326337 And this URL is the obfuscated URL of the image. http://multimedia.thestar.com/images/d6/9b/2309531c4880b8acb15cf74ea6fd.jpeg I have a couple of questions. First -- unlike most images you publish, this one was not credited. All photos taken by employees of US Federal Agencies are automatically in the public domain, correct? This image, because it was taken by a GI, is in the public domain, correct? When you republish a public domain image, do you ordinarily state it is in the public domain where you would normally credit the copyright holder? Second -- if my understanding of public domain and images that are the work of US Federal employees is incorrect, how much are you charging for a copy of that image? Third -- was the article removed, after just a few days, because of pressure from US officials? Was it removed because it is so strong?

Hello. user: Executioner (banned user: NisarKand on the enWiki) is making false claims on that picture. Not a single source mentions him being Pashtun and scholarly sources that I've provided say that he was from Iran. Yet, Executioner, as a Pashtun nationalist, insists that that individual was Pashtun. Can you please give your input on this on the picture's talk page and also on the ANI? A "calibrated monitor" is one that has been calibrated to industry standards. I use a Colorvision Spyder2 to calibrate mine. Google monitor calibration.

Please give uploaded images meaningful names. Otherwise they are difficult to track and it is hard to tell what the image is about without actually looking at it. You're absolutely correct. Thank you for pointing it out. I obviously looked too quickly at the images. It's not clear to me the value in having two almost identical images on the project, but that's just a personal opinion, and certainly neither image merits deletion. To the extent that there is some significant difference between the two that I am just missing, perhaps you could add a reference to it in the image description. Well, if we kept it, I anticipate other people might challenge whether it belongs here when it is so similar to Image:Gooderham4.jpg. And I can't think of a good reason. I didn't upload all my Gooderham pictures, and I probably should have exercised greater editorial control and only uploaded one of those two. You are right, some future readers might wonder why #3 was missing. But, your entry in the deletion log is pretty clear, so I don't see that as a real problem.

I found a picture of the w:Lackawanna six recently. I think even though it was from a TV broadcast, since it shows mugshots from US Federal law enforcemnt officials, the pictures would count as PD. Here is the Ref...

explanation[edit]

I asked User:J.smith to explain why he or she deleted Image:First 20 Guantanamo captives.jpg based on the claim it was an exact duplicate -- when it was not an exact duplicate. Image talk:First 20 Guantanamo captives.jpg was not deleted at the same time -- not should it have been, since it contained important information about this iconic image. It was just a procedural deletion of a low-resolution version of an image that we have a high-resolution copy of. I'm more then happy to undelete it if you want. I noticed you've been getting some great ship images from Flickr. But you've been downloading the low-resolution version. If you click "All sizes" above the picture on flickr and download it at the Original resolution, you get a much richer image. Best and thanks again. FlickrBot runs a bit infrequently, so a bunch of us hand-review the images. Also helps catch people who upload blatant copyvios to flickr, license them there under CC and then upload to Commons.
