Cat-a-lot and watchlist

One extension I would love to see would be: a "Add to watchlist?" check box that can be check off. Using Cat-a-lot with user preference "Add pages and files I edit to my watchlist" (among other things) caused my watchlist to get to the size I can no longer edit it. --Jarekt (talk) 00:40, 16 October 2012 (UTC)

There is a new link Preferences. Clicking that will open a dialog. Perhaps I should announce this in the watchlist. -- Rillke(q?) 06:33, 16 October 2012 (UTC)
That is very useful. Thanks --Jarekt (talk) 18:24, 29 November 2012 (UTC)

Problem with cats containing colons

Hi, first of all, wonderful tool, would not know what to do without it. There is a slight problem with colons in category names, which cannot be selected. Try Category:Station 10: Jesus is stripped of His garments in the input box, only the part after the colon (a non-existing cat) will be shown. As a workaround you can select the parent category (colon free) and navigate to the colon-containing subcategory. This works. A fix is welcome. --Herzi Pinki (talk) 10:45, 21 October 2012 (UTC)

Hope this fixed it and didn't destruct something else. -- Rillke(q?) 19:34, 21 October 2012 (UTC)
Just in case someone would like me telling you this: According to Commons:Categories#Category structure in Wikimedia Commons, one should not use two colons in category or page names. -- Rillke(q?) 20:36, 21 October 2012 (UTC)

Making Cat-A-Lot loading more than 50 subcategories

Recently my attention was brought to the fact that Cat-a-lot "only" loads 50 subcategories as a maximum. This seems to be not enough in some cases. Should Cat-a-lot be allowed to load more? Do you have concerns against raising the number to 150? Thanks -- Rillke(q?) 18:01, 29 November 2012 (UTC)

I do not see harm in it, but I am also hard pressed to think about the scenario where it would make a difference. When there are so many subcategories than I usually use a separate tab to browse them and than cut and paste the category name. --Jarekt (talk) 18:35, 29 November 2012 (UTC)
There is now a pref for it; let's see how it is used. -- Rillke(q?) 11:08, 6 December 2012 (UTC)
Postscript:I started using this tool a week ago, an injury temporarily crippling one hand. Today its failure to show all of Category:Midtown Manhattan confused me; guess I'll have to figure neat ways to subdivide cats. Jim.henderson (talk) 15:31, 31 March 2013 (UTC)

Maybe it does not remove the {{Check categories}} tag when the tool only removes a category. In some newer edits today I see that Cat-a-Lot removes that tag, when a category replacement is done. --XXN, 13:03, 26 February 2017 (UTC)
True, the relevant code is:
			if ( mode !== 'remove' ) {
				text = this.doCleanup( this.removeUncat( text ) );
			}
Meaning the "doCleanup" and "removeUncat" are activated if the code is not remove, and "doCleanup" is where {{Check categories}} is removed. --Zhuyifei1999 (talk) 14:40, 26 February 2017 (UTC)

Cat-a-lot is not working for me over at the English Wikipedia. It opens, and I can get as far as selecting articles to move/copy over. But when I try to, nothing happens. • I, too, am having a problem. I accidentally added the category "Bologna Pride 2014" to ~300 images that I transferred to Commons using Flickr2Commons. However, I am having difficulty moving the images to their proper category "Bologna Pride 2015" using Cat-a-lot. Bug: choose [all] compatibility with Gadget-GalleryFilterExtension.js

With the nice MediaWiki:Gadget-GalleryFilterExtension.js you can filter the file-type (I was not anymore aware that this is a custom gadget). Then I chooses all (Cat-a-lot), to expected would have been only the displayed get selected, but unfortunately it was really all (not displaying). Is there any chance to solve this? (@Rillke: I guess if not that must be documented?) User: Perhelion 06:26, 30 April 2016 (UTC)
PS: The Gadget-GalleryFilterExtension uses simple jQuery hide, so the simple solution would to check display: none;!? User: Perhelion 06:58, 30 April 2016 (UTC)

Suggested change, please review:
this.selectedLabels = this.labels.filter( '.cat_a_lot_selected' );

this.selectedLabels = this.labels.filter( '.cat_a_lot_selected:visible' );

some modifications, Hebrew translations.

Hi.

so one of the sysops on hewiki asked me to convert this to work with regular pages instead of just files (we do not use categories for files much in hewiki anyway). while doing so i also added the hebrew i18n.

the modified script is here. the way it is, i did not "add" support for regular cats but rather _replaced_ the support of files with regular pages. i am sure you won't find it too difficult to teach it to work with both.

i tried to keep the diff to a minimum (except the translation part, of course), so it should be fairly easy to just diff these two files to view all my modifications (based on 2.15).

btw: did you consider putting it on some public source site, e.g. github?

some points:

  • i had to add continuation support in getSubCats().
  • both getSubCats() and getParentCats() should have titles/cmtitle: this.localCatName + ':' + this.currentCategory rather than 'Category:' + this.currentCategory
  • the "float:" in css did not do it for us - it creates display problems (esp. with rtl language...). i moved li.append(symbol).append(' ').append(link); _after_ the "Copy..Move" buttons. i think you probably want to do it too.
  • i also found it advantageous to add to the cat_a_lot_category_list div style "white-space:nowrap;", as it prevents line breakage on long category names (esp. when you type in a new category in the input box - at least in chrome the menu width is sometimes calculated incorrectly in this case). i did it in the code instead of the css, but this is just because i'm not a sysop so i found it easier.

peace, קיפודנחש (talk) 17:29, 26 May 2011 (UTC)

update: so the same sysop asked me to also allow one to choose the subcats for manipulation (i.e., select them like you select regular pages). this of course allows one to create some weird stuff, as in making circular categorization, or make a category a member of itself. i do not worry too much about this, but i *do* worry about the fact that the code got uglier, manly b/c my jQuery-fu is not that high. will be grateful for any useful comment on my talk page or here wrt how to make this functionality less ugly.
peace, קיפודנחש (talk) 02:23, 27 May 2011 (UTC)
@קיפודנחש: Why here on Commons exists not the Hebrew translation?? Can you please make some? I'll then insert these. -- User: Perhelion 23:11, 5 June 2017 (UTC)
@Perhelion: - please see he:mediawiki:Gadget-Cat-a-lot.js/he. it may not correlate 1-to-1 with current gadget- there may be obsolete keys, as well as missing ones. let me know if something is missing, and i'll translate it (we run very old version of the gadget - i tried to move to the latest about a year or so ago, but something did not work correctly, and i reverted to our outdated version). peace - קיפודנחש (talk) 23:58, 5 June 2017 (UTC)
@קיפודנחש: Thanks for fast response. I've created MediaWiki:Gadget-Cat-a-lot.js/he. I'm quite not sure it is correct. The formatting for the singular / plural is also missing. I can't read Hebrew also the right formating of strings is very confusing. Please check and comment there. -- User: Perhelion 17:04, 6 June 2017 (UTC)
@Perhelion: thanks. i think this message cat-a-lot-skipped-server was a bit warped - note the T at the very end of the hebstring. as to plural - replace in appropriate message the phrase הדפים להלן with {{PLURAL:$1|הדף הבא|$1 דפים}} (it looks warped, b/c of directionality - read it with bidi=override to verify). i am not sure about using cat-a-lot from commons - if i have time' i'll try to change hewiki to use the canonical version, but for now, we are still on the old one. can't recall what were the issues. btw: "loadlocalization" function is somewhat hostile: it loads the subpage from the _local_ wiki, instead of from commons, so if i add to hewiki something like mw.loader.load('//commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/MediaWiki:Gadget-Cat-a-lot.js') (with the usual embellishments of action=raw, ctype etc.), it will try to load the hebrew translation from hewiki, not from commons. this is not a good practice, and it can hinder using the commons version from other wikis (without copying the code). i would try to replace the line url: mw.util.wikiScript() with something a bit more sophisticated maybe something like
url: window.cat_a_lot_commons_url || mw.util.wikiScript(),
(i.e., allow the local installation to define some global variable, that might point to 'commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php', and default to mw.util.getScript() if no such variable is defined. peace - קיפודנחש (talk) 18:52, 6 June 2017 (UTC)
@קיפודנחש: I've fixed the relative path to absolute path here and the language seems now working on extern import. Anyway I can't edit your requested string, absolutely horrible. Can you please post the whole line!? Or please give an more detailed hint how this can be reached (I've tried Notpadd++, Windows Notepad and the Wiki-texteditor). :-) I also don't know why is a latin 'T' in the string. I also don't see the validity of the H5 tag in your local string, absolutely horrible. ^^ -- User: Perhelion 23:33, 12 June 2017 (UTC)
Sorry about it. I should have known - the code editor is atrocious with bidi. Tbh, when i need to do bidi stuff, i often switch code editing off (the </> linkett). As soon as i'll get to a real computer, i,ll post a full snippet. Peace - קיפודנחש (talk) 01:34, 13 June 2017 (UTC)

@Perhelion: thanks. while i have you on the line, i have a question: the gadget uses .resizable in several places, which, as far as i understand, requires loading jquery.ui.resizable. however, i do not see anywhere where this library is loaded - MediaWiki:Gadgets-definition says nothing about it, and the gadget itself does not load it manually (it _does_ load some other stuff manually, like jquery.ui.dialog). is there some secret sauce somewhere? what loads this library? (on commons, when i add "?debug=1" to address line, i can see this library in the sources list in my debugger, but i can't figure out what caused it to load). thanks, peace - קיפודנחש (talk) 22:05, 13 June 2017 (UTC)

Bugs

1) Please make it possible to remove from a category. This would be super helpful for maintaining bot upload dumpgrounds such as Category:Rain. Admins can circumvent this by moving selected files to an unexisting category, then setting CommonsDelinker to empty that cat, but a) CommonsDelinker has enough work already and editing its job list is unwieldy due to the time it takes to load the page just once b) this method doubles the number of new revisions, i.e. creates unnecessary clutter.

2) In case of categories with numerous subcats (such as Category:Close-ups of flowers) Cat-a-lot doesn't list nearly all subcats, forcing manual input in case of subcats down in the alphabetic order. In this category's case, only 52 subcats out of +70.

3) Cat-a-lot refuses to move files that have spaces in their filename, the error message says "The following pages were skipped, because the old category could not be found:" Case in point, Category:Close-ups of plants, files including the following:

File:2012-11-16 14-08-53-gouttes-eau.jpg

Load in categories only

As far as I can remember, this gadget only works from categories. However, according to mw.loader.inspect() it added 21.3 KB to JavaScript payload on a random file description page (third biggest for me, after HotCat and AjaxQuickDelete). I will always love cat-a-lot nevertheless, but maybe someone will see this and find an easy enhancement. --Nemo 09:08, 19 February 2014 (UTC)

Incorporation of user flooder/bot status

I just had a flooder group added to Ladino Wikipedia so that I could use this tool without clogging recent changes. But even when I have assigned myself the flooder flag, Cat-a-lot edits do not show as bot edits. Can that be changed? Thanks. StevenJ81 (talk) 18:57, 11 April 2016 (UTC)

Problems with "Remove from this category" command

Here's the problem:

  • Create a new category, use cat-a-lot tool to add same to a list of files.
  • Attempt to remove a (now-superfluous) parent of the new cat from the same list
  • Tool instead removes all files in the list from the new cat! Very frustrating!

I read the instructions carefully and fiddled with this for quite a while and can't solve it. Help! --Pete Tillman (talk) 15:08, 6 September 2016 (UTC)

I have a similar case. Whenever I try to move or remove images from a category I receive the message "The following x pages were skipped, because the old category could not be found". E.g. from Category:Images from Wiki Loves Monuments 2016 in Bulgaria to Category:Images from Wiki Loves Monuments 2016 in Bulgaria, Unchecked Images. A whole bunch of people would be happy if the bug would be fixed. --Lord Bumbury (talk) 18:20, 14 September 2016 (UTC)
If the category is added by a template, then Cat-a-Lot can't remove it. Cat-a-Lot can only work with categories that are hardcoded. Keep in mind, though, that in some cases (which very likely include these WLM ones), it's possible that both categories should remain, even if it looks like overcategorization. --Auntof6 (talk) 18:28, 14 September 2016 (UTC)

 Not done @Matěj Suchánek: First, I can't see a connection between an anonymous editor on cswiki and Commons. Second, as per Wikimedia's privacy policy, I don't think it is possible to disable Cat-a-lot for anonymous users. But I suggest you to ask for opinions e.g. on COM:VP. --jdx Re: 18:33, 9 March 2017 (UTC)
Your comments are irrelevant. This change should prevent logged in users to edit as anonymous (eg. because of session problem) and reveal their IP address. We made this change in our fork on cswiki (where the problem was discovered) and now I'm suggesting merging it to this master version (so that other wikis also have this bug fixed). Unless you are its maintainer, you'd better this request leave to one. (But I'm not here to command Commons, this report was just my goodwill.) Matěj Suchánek (talk) 19:04, 9 March 2017 (UTC)
I don't see a reason to disallow anons from using the gadget. If the session problem exists it should be fixed in MediaWiki; not in a random gadget. If the gadget must do assert user it must be done when the user is logged in while loading the page. --Zhuyifei1999 (talk) 02:27, 10 March 2017 (UTC)

Make compatible as extern load

It would be good if other projects can load this script central from here, not to have countless copies. The major problem seems currently the language files, because they are loaded dynamically before the Cat-a-lot init. To solve this we need either the mw.hook function or the DOM init should be only with the catALot.run function (which is every time needless created, even if not used, so the lang messages can be loaded after the init). -- User: Perhelion 16:01, 6 June 2017 (UTC)

please read my previous comment: the loadLocalization() function loads the localization from the _local_ wiki, rather than from commons. peace - קיפודנחש (talk) 18:57, 6 June 2017 (UTC)

Not working

Cat-a-Lot hasn't been working for me for the past couple days (it works on contributions but not on category pages). I've tried reloading the page, logging out, purging the cache, but it still isn't showing up. MB298 (talk) 23:54, 15 June 2017 (UTC)

Here, too. Stopped working without any changes on my side. @Perhelion: Is it perhaps the smarter loading part? Because I have a quite slow, sometimes unstable connection. Could it perhaps be, that I run into a time-out? Or should it in theory be actually better with this change? — Speravir – 01:54, 16 June 2017 (UTC)
It has been hit-and-miss for me. Most recently, it worked, but when I scrolled to page to select things, the Cat-a-Lot area scrolled with it! --Auntof6 (talk) 02:09, 16 June 2017 (UTC)
Hm* I removed the new draggable feature.
@MB298: there is no rationale the tool works on contributions and not on category pages, except there is a module load problem (indeed it maybe not loaded the new draggable module). E.q. I see on your JS an outdated script: User:ZooFari/licensereviewer.js (and probably User:Kanonkas/twinkle.js too).
@Speravir: Why you include the gadget in your JS?? :-P
Thanks for report. -- User: Perhelion 08:38, 16 June 2017 (UTC)
@Perhelion: I don't understand why you have window.setTimeout( ..., 400 ). Theoretically the wrapped function could be run before document.ready, and DOM being unready may cause troubles. --Zhuyifei1999 (talk) 09:00, 16 June 2017 (UTC)
Because the whole DOM of this gadget get created immediately without need (and slow down other loads on every page!), so this timeout is only a workaround. And that could not be the reason, as a timeout is rather against "unready". -- User: Perhelion 09:20, 16 June 2017 (UTC)
@Perhelion: “Why you include the gadget in your JS??” This was just as reaction trying to get it work with individual loading inside of mw.loader.using. This said after your latest change “remove draggable feature” Cat-a-lot works now again in categories, where it did not the last days. Therefore: yes. @Auntof6 and MB298: How is it for you? — Speravir – 17:10, 16 June 2017 (UTC)

English Wikipedia

I wonder, could this be made available for use on the English Wikipedia? Autoconfirmed users have had the ability to move categories for months now, but there is no good way to clean-up after a category move. One is required to do all the work manually. Cat-a-lot could easily remedy this situation, and would be of great use. RGloucester (talk) 17:38, 12 March 2015 (UTC)

That would be up to wikipedia community. You would need to first ask for approval there and then check with the maintainers here if they will be willing to customize and maintain the code on the wikipedia. Alternatively you could try to find English Wikipedia users familiar with JavaScript who would be willing to adopt it. --Jarekt (talk) 18:58, 12 March 2015 (UTC)

Hebrew translation; miscellaneous;

@Perhelion: - (opening a new section - old one outlived its useful life):

  1. hebrew translation (MediaWiki:Gadget-Cat-a-lot.js/he: still some breakages, this time with the edit summary. below is the right translation:

now, these present a problem: these summaries are good for hewiki, but i don't think they are good for Hebrew speakers on commons. i can't think of a good solution, but if we are to use the translation from commons, maybe it's not such a hot idea to share the translation file... maybe, what i asked you to do before (make the path to the translation absolute) was wrong, and we want the current translation to stay on commons (i.e., all the UI strings translated, but the links to help pages and edit summaries to remain canonical). TBH, i don't see why the summaries should be in the language of the editor that used the gadget - they should be in a language understood by most _other_ editors, i.e., in the main language of the project where the gadget is run.

so maybe, we should revert this "absolute path" change, and use the translation installed locally in each wiki, or, hopefully, you can come up with a way to use the translation from commons, but allow local projects to override the translations of (only) the summaries.

(i ignored the "save preferences" translation - preferences do not work on other projects, since they depend on a couple other gadgets from commons, which i have no intention to import - not enough bang for the buck...)

peace - קיפודנחש (talk) 23:59, 14 June 2017 (UTC)

Hey קיפודנחש, I don't agree with "absolute path", so far I understand you. What should be wrong? Please be more concrete. The translated summaries only appearing on not English projects. If you would create a translation of the Commons help page (as many other languages) then we could also add the link there!?
@SettingsManager: I could program the code to the effect that the settings modules are also loaded locally (on extern import) and only when needed.
So all in all there seems no really limitations here. peace -- User: Perhelion 00:59, 15 June 2017 (UTC)
@Perhelion: it is highly likely i'm missing something. the problem, as i see it, is that the summaries we want in hewiki, (which you just added - thanks!) are _not_ the summaries you want in commons - they would make no sense here, and indeed, would not even work (b/c of the localized namespace name used in internal links to category pages). i do not know if there's anyone actively using this gadget on commons using hebrew as interface language, so this may be academic at this point. it is still best to keep it localized, so other projects, such as wikitext, wiktionary etc. can use it. as to "settings": their usefulness is marginal at best for hewiki: 2 items are useless ("remove check categories" - those "check categories" are specific to commons, and "Allow categorising pages (including categories) that are not files" - this is, of course, the _only_ mode of operation that makes sense outside of commons, and we set it hard-code). the rest is also not very useful (i also hard-coded the "maximum number of subcats" to 500. admittedly, the use of slider for this item is cute, but cuteness is not good enough reason to use the (otherwise irrelevant) preferences. for now, i simply injected a little css on hewiki to hide the "preferences" linkette. peace - קיפודנחש (talk) 16:35, 15 June 2017 (UTC)
Of course, 2 items are useless on external use, but I mean that, we can look away about this. PS: I will not install the preferences for external import, as it would indeed need some more complicated code (and with additional module load wait). -- User: Perhelion 20:07, 17 June 2017 (UTC)

Cat-a-lot as a gadget on sl.wiki

Hi. I would like to introduce Cat-a-lot as a gadget on sl.wiki. I have no idea which scripts to copy where and how to adjust them. I would be very thankful for any kind of help. --Janezdrilc (talk) 19:15, 23 September 2017 (UTC)

Hello Janezdrilc, you have simply to do:
  1. c&p the following code into sl:MediaWiki:Gadget-Cat-a-lot.js
    /**
     * Cat-a-lot - changes category of multiple files
    **/
    window.catALotPrefs = {editpages:  true};
    mw.loader.load('//commons.wikimedia.org/w/load.php?modules=ext.gadget.Cat-a-lot');

  2. write a description on sl:MediaWiki:Gadget-Cat-a-lot
  3. and finally add it to the definitions (as I see you already edited there) with this line:

Cat-a-lot[ResourceLoader|dependencies=mediawiki.util]|Cat-a-lot.js

I have not tested this case, but it should be the recommended way.
PS: As I compared a working inclusion on heWiki, you can also add this line:
mw.util.addCSS("#cat_a_lot_settings { display:none !important; }"); // Preferences depend on some Commons gadgets, not available locally
-- User: Perhelion 11:01, 24 September 2017 (UTC)

I copied your instructions, anyway it seems something still makes the code not working. Maybe you could try to enable the gadget as a slwiki user, just to check the situation? Is it possible that server just needs few days to enable the gadget (as it occurs in the case of translatewiki.net translations)? --Janezdrilc (talk) 22:09, 24 September 2017 (UTC)

@Janezdrilc: Oh* indeed, take the code (from the mentioned heWiki):
if (mw.config.get('wgNamespaceNumber') === 14) {
	window.catALotPrefs = { editpages: true, subcatcount: 500 };
	mw.loader.using(['jquery.ui.resizable', 'mediawiki.util']).done(function () {
		mw.util.addCSS("#cat_a_lot_settings { display:none !important;}"); // Preferences depend on some Commons gadgets, not available locally
		mw.loader.load('//commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=MediaWiki:Gadget-Cat-a-lot.js&action=raw&ctype=text/javascript');
		mw.loader.load('//commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=MediaWiki:Gadget-Cat-a-lot.css&action=raw&ctype=text/css', 'text/css');
	});
}
and change also the definition entry. -- User: Perhelion 23:04, 24 September 2017 (UTC)

Funny, Cat-a-lot now works but just in every 5th or 7th category - mostly it doesn't show up. Sometimes when I click a random category there's no Cat-a-lot, then I reload or purge a page few times and it appears again. I copied your script also in sl.wikisource and made some tests. There it works just great - it shows up in every category with no exeptions. As I see that also the Add an [edit] link for the lead section of a page gadget doesn't work to me on sl.wiki, but works fine on sl.wikisource, I suppose that w:sl:MediaWiki:Common.js must have some kind of mess within it's code. Problems in Monobook

Firstly I use monobook- I have custom.js that I use but have not copied over and suspect this might be causing a conflict.

  • On a new computer or after I have reset my preferences- cat-a-lot works. I click the button, up it comes, I do the changes and the changes register. The second time I go to use it I press the button and no-action happens. No popup appears. So I change the skin to Vector- and it works once more, and again and again. I reset to monobook- and once more it works but just once. --ClemRutter (talk) 00:09, 26 October 2012 (UTC)

Not working if loaded via "withJS"

It doesn't seem to work anymore if loaded via "withJS" parameter. It worked on June 13th. Now the gadget loads, I can select a file on category page, click "Move", and it says "Moved to category <other category>", but file page actually isn't edited. 62.65.58.38 11:19, 23 June 2017 (UTC)

You mean for IPs? That should not work anymore. As massedits are not allowed for IPs. -- User: Perhelion 13:23, 27 June 2017 (UTC)
As I understand there is no rule against IPs using scrips for tedious tasks, and it's technically still possible, though harder. To address concerns there is 8 edits per minute limit for new users and IPs.
Being able to use this via "withJS" was useful, and I don't think there is good reason to disallow it unless there has been significant abuse and it's certain that allowing it does more harm than good. I'd appreciate if you can make it work again. 62.65.58.38 18:20, 27 June 2017 (UTC)

Draggable

Another question (apart from the still existing problems @MB298, Speravir, Zhuyifei1999, and Auntof6: ) would it be useful to add this feature?! I personally think, of course, I found the resize feature by myself only per comments by Rillke. What do you mean? -- User: Perhelion 19:36, 17 June 2017 (UTC)

I don't mind either way --Zhuyifei1999 (talk) 19:38, 17 June 2017 (UTC)
What is this feature for? Making the Cat-a-Lot overlay movable/draggable? This would be very useful, indeed. But is there for testing purposes some code I could separately add to my common.js? Could it perhaps be, that the now removed code actually placed the overlay outside of the visible area for MB298 and me? — Speravir – 21:48, 17 June 2017 (UTC)

@Speravir, Zhuyifei1999, Auntof6, Speravir, and MB298: Here is a draggable testing version MediaWiki:Gadget-Cat-a-lot.js/sandbox.js (or you can also testing it on Beta Commons). Greetings -- User: Perhelion 13:22, 27 June 2017 (UTC)
PS: here the install code:

	  importScript('MediaWiki:Gadget-Cat-a-lot.js/sandbox.js');
});

-- User: Perhelion 13:39, 27 June 2017 (UTC)

I first tested on Beta-Commons, and it worked finegreat. Then I deactivated CaL here in my preferences and tested the sandbox version above by loading on the browser console, and it also worked! I do not know, whether you’ve changed something from the latest not working version, but I hope it will work, when you make it the default version. The draggable feature is sometimes very useful. — Speravir – 20:59, 27 June 2017 (UTC)

@Perhelion: I tried the install code and it seems to work fine now. MB298 (talk) 20:55, 27 June 2017 (UTC)
@Perhelion: well, it worked for ten minutes. MB298 (talk) 21:12, 27 June 2017 (UTC)
Perhaps restoring it for now to its old (pre-June 12) version would eliminate problems until the draggable feature can be successfully added. MB298 (talk) 21:15, 27 June 2017 (UTC)
Thanks for feedback. @MB298: What do you mean exact with "eliminate problems"? (indeed the sandbox version added and removing something) @Speravir: Yes I added something more. One thing is still to do, the click function must temporary deactivated on drag. It needs more test. -- User: Perhelion 00:20, 28 June 2017 (UTC)
@Perhelion: Cat-a-Lot first stopped working for me around June 12 or 13, shortly after you made a large number of edits to the gadget, so I think that may have something to do with it. MB298 (talk) 00:22, 28 June 2017 (UTC)
The current live version should be fine. I found another small problem on the sandbox version, if we drag and then resize the first time, the box jumps to some top position. -- User: Perhelion 00:33, 28 June 2017 (UTC)
Hm, I am experiencing the same problems I have been (works for about the first 5 minutes and then disappears, however still works on everything except for category pages.) MB298 (talk) 17:46, 28 June 2017 (UTC)
@MB298: That is very mysterious, you mean in both versions? Please describe so much details as possible. I recommend another test for you, by deactivate (the 8 years old script) User:Kanonkas/twinkle.js and also to outdated User:ZooFari/licensereviewer.js. -- User: Perhelion 20:07, 28 June 2017 (UTC)
I installed the .js script mentioned on the Help page today while removing the one you mentioned above; it seems to work in some cases but not others; for example I am currently using it in Category:Photographs by MB298 to mass-move files to subcategories; although I need to purge the cache to make it appear at all, and even then sometimes it does not work. I'm not sure if this is particularly relevant but it seems to load on categories with a larger amount of files (therefore a longer loading time) and not categories with a small number of files. Resizing problems

I'm recently having some issues with resizing the Cat-a-lot box. When I try to change the vertical size of the box (to clear up space when there are many subcategories), the bottom edge of the box separates from the bottom of the window. This is unintended, since I only want to adjust the top edge. Further, if I now type in a new category (after resizing), the top edge stays in the same place, but the bottom edge moves down to accommodate the new subcategories. This often moves the bottom edge below the end of the window, and effectively hides the bottom options (Remove from this category, Preferences...). Can the box be resizable without moving it around at the same time? kennethaw88talk 22:20, 30 September 2017 (UTC)

Feature request: select entire rows

I haven't used Cat-a-lot for a long time but I can already say that it's a great and very helpful script. Without it, the life of the "categorizators" would be a huge mess. Adding the ability to select entire rows (10 images) in a single click would be awesome.

I have to select about 100 images from a category. That means I have to click 100 times. This script can add a small button at the left or right side of each row, so the users can select all the images in that row by simply clicking that button. In my case, it would reduce my work from 100 clicks to 10 - and that would be extremely nice! Fructibus (talk) 11:08, 14 October 2017 (UTC)

Hello Fructibus, to select/de-select multiple files "in a row" (Fig. 1), first select file A, then hold down  Shift and select file B. The state of file B will be toggled (selected if it was not previously and vice-versa) and then assigned to all files from A through B. -- User: Perhelion 15:17, 14 October 2017 (UTC)

Bugs and suggestions

Just used this tool for the first time today. Overall, very impressive, easy to use, and helpful. But...

  1. As others have reported, the tool sometimes hangs when moving or copying multiple files; in fact, it almost always hangs at some point even if only a few files are being moved or copied. When this happens, the modal dialog spinner just spins and spins and spins. There seems to be no way to cancel an operation once started; a cancel option would be a good addition, but fixing the cause of hang-ups would be even better.
  2. If the category names are long enough and there are enough subcategories, it is possible for the popup box in the lower right to completely cover the last file on the page, so that it cannot be selected or deselected, and there is no way to move the popup box. (It is possible to work around this by resizing the browser window, but that is awkward and inconvenient.) How about adding a left-arrow icon which, when clicked, moves the whole box to the lower left (and, of course, changes the left-arrow to a right-arrow so that you can reverse the process)?

Thanks for your contribution! --R'n'B (talk) 14:52, 5 August 2011 (UTC)

One of the DUMBEST tools here

Whoever made it not only made it complicated but also somewhat retarded, it doesn't do what you tell it to do...I tried using it but everytime it messes it up...why can't it just MOVE all the pics I selected to the category I selected instead of mucking around and moving it to some SUB-CATEGORY which I do not care about?...they should rename it to Cat-everything-except-what-you-want.js.....--Stemoc (talk) 04:13, 24 August 2013 (UTC)

Hi,
I suggest:
  1. Avoiding as much as possible to be mean to whoever was involved in this tool.
  2. Describing clearly the problem you face and how to reproduce it − see good advice at mw:How to report a bug.
For your information, I have been using Cat-a-lot for the past 3 years without any problem at all. So being a little more specific might help here.
Cheers, Jean-Fred (talk) 14:27, 24 August 2013 (UTC)
You can see my recent contribution, I went to this category, (Category:Vampire Diaries Panel at the 2011 Comic-Con International), i ran cat-a-lot I typed the name "Julie Plec" for her category and then i selected 32 images there which had Julie Plec in them, but there was no option to move those images i selected to her category, i figured i may have read it wrong because, honestly its confusing the way it written and instead of "copying" it to Julie Plec's category, it coped it to one of the cats on that page)..so yes, its a dumb tool, how hard would it be to select pics and then add it to the category OF YOUR CHOICE, not the one the script chooses for you?...--Stemoc (talk) 14:43, 24 August 2013 (UTC)
Just enter "Julie Plec" in the text field of the gadget and press enter. Also, read the help page. — Julian H.✈ (talk/files) 14:57, 24 August 2013 (UTC)
Didn't work the last time i tried, i pushed enter a few times adn it refused to give me a "Julie Plec" category.....it worked now...what went wrong then?--Stemoc (talk) 15:07, 24 August 2013 (UTC)
That's why, when something doesn't do what it should, I like to give up for now and try again hours later. If it works, this method does not tell me whether the tool was temporarily dumb or I was, but if again it doesn't, it gives me more confidence when I complain. Removing category problems

Hi, I've had this problem a couple of times recently:

  • Create a new category, use catalot tool to add same to a list of files.
  • Attempt to remove a (now-superfluous) parent of the new cat from the same list (ie, files in the new subcat)
  • Tool instead removes all files in the list from the new cat! Very frustrating!

See, forex revision history of such a file. This happened twice in one day, as I was categorizing a huge file-dump from Flickr that was poorly-categorized. I was careful the second time to RTFM carefully before attempting the removal. Help? TIA, Pete Tillman (talk) 18:48, 22 December 2013 (UTC)

Undo mistake?

I've done shit, is there an easy option (function) to undo or repair an done operation (70 files)??User: Perhelion (Commons: = crap?)  19:08, 11 December 2014 (UTC)

I think this will require either individual edits with HotCat, or a batch edit with VisualChange, which is complex. Is this the set of changes you're trying to undo? If so, someone with VisualChange experience can try and rewrite the categories by putting them in a temporary sandbox gallery and doing a replacement on them. (A mistake in VisualChange can cause more trouble than Cat-a-lot though.) --Closeapple (talk) 22:15, 11 December 2014 (UTC)
If that's the edits, an admin can also roll them back and Perhelion can then re-categorize them correctly. But for that, we'd need to know which edits to roll back exactly. Lupo 22:41, 11 December 2014 (UTC)
I've rolled back the 117! edits pointed out by Closeapple because most of them were obviously wrong. This has done the job on the contribs page with the erroneous edits (thanks for sorting them out, closeapple!):
$rollBackLinks = jQuery.makeArray( $('.mw-rollback-link a') );
var rollback = function() {
  $.get( $( $rollBackLinks.pop() ).attr('href') ).done( rollback );
};

Remove from other category

I would appreciate to have the capacity to remove a set of images from a predefined category without having to navigate to this category page. Sometimes, I find a category having say 20 images and all the images belong to 3 categories other than the current one. If I want to remove the 20 images from these other categories, I need to navigate to the 3 category's pages and redo the selection of the images. If I could remove directly, it would be more efficient. I hope my explanations are clear. Pmau (talk) 12:51, 19 September 2015 (UTC)

I have the exact same problem. When I am in a species cat (Category:Conus_striatus) I want to remove fromm all files the genus cat (Category:Conus)
The reason for that is that User:Hansmuller uploaded 270.000 pictures. And placed all of this pictures in a species AND a genus cat (which is called overcategorizing)
I took the work to create the species category when they don't exist. But I need a way to remove the genus cat once I have created the species cat.
This is a lifetime work if you don't help me.
PS: You tool is amazing. We love it all.

Perhaps off topic for the general case, but as a workaround anybody can remove the superfluous twice categorised images from say Category:Conus (or any category) with VisualFileChange (click "category", "just try", "custom replace", replace string "[[Category:Conus]]" with one space) keeping the other images, takes a few minutes, if only all underlying species categories exist. Category redirect

Cat-a-lot really should automatically redirect to or at least show the correct category when typing in a redirected category. For example, after typing in "Chippewa" and pressing enter, it should show "Ojibwa". In many cases it is very cumbersome to find the correct name and slows down the categorization process. --P 1 9 9   17:23, 2 March 2016 (UTC)

i believe this should be very easy to fix: add to the opensearch API call redirects: 'resolve'. this will tell the autocompletion not to return redirects, i think. peace - קיפודנחש (talk) 16:22, 9 March 2016 (UTC)

@P199: can you give an example of a redirected category? i still believe what i said is true, but i am not familiar with commons {{Category redirect}}. i do not think this is real "redirects" in the sense wiki understands redirects, and if it isn't, then my suggestion will probably have no effect (BTW: do category redirects make sense at all? it seems entirely counterproductive, b/c it will cause a person clicking on the cat from a page or a file to get to a cat page that does not include this page or file. i can't see the point of "true" category redirects, and can't think of a sane use case for them). peace - קיפודנחש (talk) 14:29, 5 April 2016 (UTC)
category:Chippewa, {{Category redirect}} is a template, custom stuff at Wikimedia Commons, not a redirect that MediaWiki would detect. -- Rillke(q?) 14:33, 5 April 2016 (UTC)
Indeed. You are free to submit a patch. I have run POTY and surprisingly have a real life. -- Rillke(q?) 14:33, 5 April 2016 (UTC)
I look forward to this feature being added to Cat-a-lot. It's very frustrating to be unable to follow category redirects via Cat-a-lot. A very large number of (valid) category redirects are under Category:Aviation, and many more will be needed to deal with cat name variations and their many sub-cats. PeterWD (talk) 08:26, 4 May 2016 (UTC)
I hope this proposal will be taken seriously, to enable us to move down through the category tree without hitting a dead end, and no way back up. Hotcat works in a different way, but that manages to deal with category redirect templates at Commons very satisfactorily.PeterWD (talk) 10:49, 2 December 2016 (UTC)
+1 for this. I do a lot of categorization for Hawaiian images, and need this at lot for characters with diacritics. For example, Category:Kilauea is a soft redirect to Category:Kīlauea, but I can't easily type the "ī" character, so I'm usually forced to go to another tab, go to the real category, then copy-paste the name into the Cat-a-lot search box. Thanks. howcheng {chat} 21:57, 14 February 2017 (UTC)

I love it, but I have a suggestion for improvement... 2

  1. Currently Cat-a-lot is limited to categories. Why not extend it to picture galleries?
    In commons, biology, all the pictures of species included in a species gallery should/can be in the species category with the same name.
    Example: If you look at Percina kathae, the image should/can be put also in the species category Category:Percina kathae. Currently the image is in the genus category Category:Percina which is very bad (there are a lot of images in Category:Percina as if these images were from unidentified species.
  2. In a category, you propose "Remove from this category" which is excellent. But you could also propose Remove for all the categories.
    Example:

So from Category:Percina kathae, we would be able to remove Category:Percina from all pictures in Category:Percina kathae.
Best best regards Liné1 (talk) 15:14, 23 December 2011 (UTC)

Good idea and maybe extend it to user contributions too for those users that put a million of tags on their images. --Foroa (talk) 15:37, 23 December 2011 (UTC)
Or just users that upload a bunch of related uncategorized files which you want to add to a category. Nemo 17:51, 26 December 2011 (UTC)

Invisible characters in Category names

I do not know where they come from, but only by cutting and pasting I sometimes manage to add categories with invisible characters to files, which are not handled properly by Cat-a-lot. For example File:Colima - Anthropomorphic Tubular Duct Flute - Walters TL200920138 - Three Quarter.jpg is in Category:Archeological sites in Colima, but the string "Category:Archeological sites in Colima" ends with invisible a character #26 for some reason, which is ignored by most of the software. However, Cat-a-lot can not remove that category or move that file. Would it be possible to tweak the script to ignore it as well?--Jarekt (talk) 20:23, 19 June 2012 (UTC)

The invisible character in your example is U+200E. Since it causes problems, I can add a fix for it within my bot script. -- Basilicofresco (msg) 21:25, 27 June 2012 (UTC)
Thanks for the fix of this example. I was hoping for changes to Cat-a-lot so invisible characters would be stripped from the category names, before they are added to the files. --Jarekt (talk) 19:03, 18 September 2012 (UTC)

The bug continues. File pages containing unvisible control characters in the category link are displayed in the category but Cat-a-lot is not able to remove them from the category. (Btw., HotCat is able to handle such pages.) --ŠJů (talk) 14:34, 19 August 2013 (UTC)

Any idea why ...

Any idea why cat-a-lot cannot move or remove categories from the items in Category:Buildings and structures in Valletta ? --Foroa (talk) 10:46, 7 May 2013 (UTC)

The wikitexts of the category members contains a character with char code 8206 (a en:Left-to-right mark) between the last letter and the first closing bracket: [[Category:Buildings and structures in Valletta→‎←]]. Cat-A-Lot does not consider it as whitespace but MediaWiki does. This has to be fixed in Cat-A-Lot. -- Rillke(q?) 11:22, 7 May 2013 (UTC)

An "Invert selection" option would be useful, please. all / all media / all categories / none

Currently it's only possible to select "all" or "none". "all" is either "all files" or "everything" depending on preferences. For Commons, it can be helpful to be able to select just "all categories" or "all files". For the later, without going through all the changes. --  Docu  at 07:59, 14 December 2013 (UTC)

What is happen with Cat-a-lot?

Hi at all. Every now and then Cat-a-lot does not work. The moment I give the order to move the files to the correct subcategory that appears on the right, he declares that it is not possible because "the following pages were skipped, because the old category could not be found". This is absurd. Cat-a-lot does not execute the movements because it denies the existence of the category of departure, where the files are located, and from which instead should leave. Why? Usually Cat-a-lot work for me, but then suddenly no longer works, then it works again after an hour, or maybe the next day. It's very boring. Because if I change my pc it is the same thing. What's going on? What crashes? It is just my problem, or Cat-a-lot is malfunctioning for all? Thanks for the answers, tips, solutions. Best regards, --DenghiùComm (talk) 16:40, 21 February 2014 (UTC)

Check if the files are categorized through templates (rather than explicit [[Category:FooBar]] wiki code). --Dschwen (talk) 23:18, 21 February 2014 (UTC)
No, this is not the matter. To move the files into the correct category I was finally forced to move them individually with HotCat. --DenghiùComm (talk) 00:33, 22 February 2014 (UTC)

[copied from the discussion in the Village Pump] Assuming you are trying to move from an existing category, I think this happens because the file has already been moved to another category and no longer is a member of the source category; if you are trying to move a file to more than one category, you should copy to the first, then move to the second. If you refresh the category view between Catalot runs, those images which have been moved no longer appear. I haven't had any problems with this, and hope that helps. Rodhullandemu (talk) 17:11, 21 February 2014 (UTC)

I know exactly how it works Cat-a-lot. If the files are moved, it is obvious that it do not accept again a move request, even if the pictures still appear. The fact is that the files are really in the category, and when Cat-a-lot goes crazy I can only move them individually using HotCat. It's a big waste of time. This evening it happens that Cat-a-lot works for copying; when I request to move 5 files (tree of this statue and two of this other statue) the tool moved me only the files of Apollo, not that of Artemis; for these last two files I must use HotCat. It's very strange! A mystery! --DenghiùComm (talk) 00:49, 22 February 2014 (UTC)
Maybe there was something odd about the syntax? I would suggest that the category might have been added by a template, but if that were the case I shouldn't think HotCat could do anything about it either ... —SamB (talk) 05:12, 22 February 2014 (UTC)
I believe I have answered the question here... TeleComNasSprVen (talk) 06:55, 22 February 2014 (UTC)
If there are invisible characters put in the category name by FrescoBot, then I cannot do anything. But I look to the chronology of these files of Artemis, and I see that FrescoBot doesn't touch them. So the mystery still stay there. If it is a problem of cache (did I understand correctly TeleComNasSprVen?), I will try next time to clean it when Cat-a-lot will be crazy again, in the hope that after it will works correctly. Thank you very much at all for your answer! Cheers, --DenghiùComm (talk) 08:22, 22 February 2014 (UTC)
Actually, FrescoBot is trying to remove the characters in order for Cat-a-lot to work. I contacted BasilicoFresco, the maintainer of FrescoBot, on the English Wikipedia and he's assured me he will restart the bot's jobs. Maybe later the bot will get around to removing the characters from the files. TeleComNasSprVen (talk) 10:32, 22 February 2014 (UTC)
I think what you have suggested doing, cleaning cache, definitely helps in this case. But I think Commons needs a more efficient way to solve this problem than relying on the bot, when the bot owner goes on WikiBreak. TeleComNasSprVen (talk) 10:34, 22 February 2014 (UTC)

YES ! SO IT WORKS !!! Thank you so much TeleComNasSprVen ! When Cat-a-lot became crazy and doesn't ricognize the files, it's necessary to clean the cache. After it works. Fine! Wonderful! Thank you very much again ! Cheers, --DenghiùComm (talk) 11:34, 24 February 2014 (UTC)

Filter out invisible LTR marks

Hi! I noticed that very often Cat-a-lot users insert the invisible character U+200E (LTR mark) at the end of the category name, just before the closing double brackets. You can use this tool to actually see the invisible character or the backspace to "feel" it. Some examples: [1] [2] [3] [4] [5] [6] These LTR marks come from cut-and-pasting a subcategory name from a category. Is it possible to filter out this invisible character every time a user insert it? New user interface

All wrong. Has this been beta-tested and is there any way of reverting to the old one? Rodhullandemu (talk) 12:15, 28 October 2017 (UTC)

Hey Rodhullandemu, yes/no, it depends what you mean withe the very concrete "all wrong"?? -- User: Perhelion 12:25, 28 October 2017 (UTC)
"Cancel" means "I realise I don't want to do this, stop"- but it only appears once the moves have been actioned. "Revert" is useful but should not be so prominent as it could be (and has been) hit by accident. But the thing you really want, "Done" appears not as a button but as highlighted text which you might not realise if you're colourblind- that should be a button too. HTH. Rodhullandemu (talk) 12:41, 28 October 2017 (UTC)
@Rodhullandemu: ok, thanks for feedback. It is indeed a very early version of this new features.
  • The only thing I understand clear is the "Revert" objection. What do you think about to made this only as small text-link with red color, in the right corner?
  • Another idea, maybe this function should only appear after closing the progress window on the main box!?
  • "Cancel": That is it for what Cancel is intended, stops actions that has been actioned. So you want more, close the window? Maybe this functions should und a close button (X) on the top right corner?
  • "Done" You mean the new buttons should be text too? Or the existing text-link "Return to page" should be a button too?
-- User: Perhelion 13:09, 28 October 2017 (UTC)
I front-ended databases and was a UI designer for ten years so I hope you'll forgive my frustration. In my experience "Cancel" is used to (a) close a dialog box without making any changes, or (b) stop an action already in progress- although I don't advocate that because it may leave the underlying data in an uncertain state. Since it only appears after the processing has completed, it's the wrong label for that button in any case and explains the confusion about that button's purpose. "Revert" is OK, as would "Undo" be, but I don't see it necessary to be in a different colour. I see no problem in replicating the text "return to category" as a "Done" or "Close" button; that's a minor change but is clear what's going on. Rodhullandemu (talk) 14:18, 28 October 2017 (UTC)

@Perhelion: , I personally appreciate the new functionality that you added and I am OK with the UI. If anything, it should probably resemble OOui as much as possible.

However, I have an objection regarding your use of the 'Move' message from MW instead of the one from the translations. Perhaps in English and German in sounds good, but in languages like French and Romanian the operation is translated as 'Rename', which in the context of Cat-a-lot does not make any sense. Could you please revert this to using cat-a-lot-move?--Strainu (talk) 20:42, 28 October 2017 (UTC)

Sounds like a good idea, although I never felt the need myself. Could be used when some files are in cat A and B and you create cat C which is included in cat A and B. What is really useful is that it could save a line from the GUI (according to the mock-ups), which means a lot on 13" screens, especially when they're wide (16:9).--Strainu (talk) 21:01, 28 October 2017 (UTC)

I just tried to move three files from Category:Bridges in Greece to Category:Rio-Antirio Bridge (construction). When I checked the files afterwards, they had been removed from the target cat rather than from Category:Bridges in Greece. [7], [8], [9]. --Sitacuisses (talk) 16:03, 29 October 2017 (UTC)

Same here. If I try to move files from category A to category B when they are already in category B, the tool removes B instead of removing A. A second identical "edit" fixes it, by actually changing A to B. kennethaw88talk 07:22, 30 October 2017 (UTC)

Would it be possible to return to the words "Remove", "Move", and "Add" instead of the little arrows? The latter are hard to discern for me. --Schlosser67 (talk) 07:38, 2 November 2017 (UTC)

Hello Schlosser, Rodhullandemu, the words make the menu really big (in view, that this obscures the actual target area, this is a main conflict of functionality), some other gadgets (e.q. more used like HotCat) have very similar much smaller buttons. But I could simply made the "MS-DOS" like interface to Wiki toolbar like buttons. -- User: Perhelion 09:57, 2 November 2017 (UTC)
I didn't find the words in the Cat-a-lot interface that big, not even on a smallish notebook screen. HotCat buttons are the size of the normal display font, and thus big enough for me. As a rule, I do better with words (at least if I have some idea of the language) than with pictograms (which often need an explanation anyway). Would it be possible to let the users chose the look and feel of the tools? --Schlosser67 (talk) 13:57, 2 November 2017 (UTC)
@Schlosser67: Please take a look at the new buttons, the words are seeming only in some languages like English (or syllable characters like Chinese) very short (3 action links and the category name could become the half of the page). I see no really advantage of words. I mean this is only "habituation to the old" (as Rodhullandemu says, "I find a bit old-fashioned"), but if some agree for textlinks only option, I'll do this. -- User: Perhelion 16:42, 2 November 2017 (UTC)
I've worked using computers for more than 50 years but I know nothing of code or programming etc. When those little arrows appeared I knew there was some hiccup in the machinery. This was confirmed when suddenly the menu changed its nature completely and now offered me only "images". So I clicked on that and brought about the mess Rodhullandemu kindly fixed. Pluses and minuses and arrows are rational and logical but please may we go back to words. Thanks, Eddaido (talk) 21:17, 2 November 2017 (UTC)
Perhelion, in which language would the words become so long that they cover "half the page"? Most computer users are familiar with the English terms anyway, even if they do not know much English otherwise. Also, in case you have mislaid your reading glasses, a familiar word pattern is easier to recognize than a tiny symbol. If there is a question of the menu covering the target area, can't it be made so that it can be moved around, or moved to another corner of the browser window? I just noticed that this can be done. The larger symbols are better, but the words are still more straightforward in my view. --Schlosser67 (talk) 05:11, 3 November 2017 (UTC)

Stuck on "Loading..."

I've been using this tool for a while now, but as of yesterday (or a few days ago?) it keeps getting stuck on "Loading..." whenever I click on it. I thought it had something to do with the fact that I was loading it from a user script, so I added it as a gadget to my home wiki here by following these instructions, but I'm still getting the same issue. Basically, if you go to any category ("Sportski logoi" is the one I'm trying to rearrange a bit) with the files/pages you want to move and click on the tool, it just gets stuck on "Loading..." and there's a "TypeError: $(...).text(...).button is not a function" in the console. Change default preference

Hi, is it possible to set the preference “Alloy categorising pages (including categories) that are not files” by default? This way the gadget could be used on other wikis with no images only by importing this gadget directly, not modifying it locally, that can be difficult.--Syum90 (talk) 10:52, 11 August 2015 (UTC)

@Syum90: Changing this would probably result in many miscategorisations here on Commons by people who expected the gadget to only touch files. Replacing the false with a true at name: 'editpages' shouldn't be difficult (unless more adaptations are required to change this) …    FDMS  4    17:10, 11 August 2015 (UTC)
Would it be possible to make this switchable by a variable, so when you import the script you can set the variable to change the behaviour and you don't have to further maintain the script locally. Akoopal (talk) 06:42, 12 August 2015 (UTC)
@FDMS4 and Akoopal: Thank you for your ideas; well, the ideal would be to import directly because we would always have the gadget updated, but if will cause problems here on Commons we will have to modify the code locally and to update it periodically.--Syum90 (talk) 08:33, 12 August 2015 (UTC)

I am affraid that this gadget is causing the problem, when we cannot type "space" and some other charecters. Can we fix it?--Juandev (talk) 08:22, 26 October 2015 (UTC)

I am sorry, it is probably not caused by this gadget. Its pretty difficult to find out, where is the problem.--Juandev (talk) 09:00, 26 October 2015 (UTC)
You mean, you press the [space] key and no space is inserted in the input field that is currently focussed? [yes|no] -- Rillke(q?) 11:02, 26 October 2015 (UTC)

 Info I had the same problem a couple of times since beginning of summer, but as far as I remember it was in "search page - search field". I assumed it was a problem with my browser (Google Chrome), I closed the page, reinitialized the browser and problem solved.--JotaCartas (talk) 11:24, 26 October 2015 (UTC)

Propylaea

Propylaea means entrance and this words may be used to various buildings. Would it be possible to change Category:Propylaea to Category:Propylaea of Athens. I will do the minor changes later. --Io Herodotus (talk) 02:25, 19 May 2017 (UTC)

@Io Herodotus: there exists Propylaea (architecture) for the type of entrance in general. I guess the idea was that most people would think of Athens on seeing “the Propylaea”, and we can’t disambiguate proper names from ordinary terms by capitalizing only the former. If you disagree, though, this page is not the best place to discuss the question, as it concerns only the Cat-a-lot Gadget itself, not the work we do with it. You could propose renaming on the Talk page of either category or, more formally, open a discussion at COM:CFD.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 01:44, 21 May 2017 (UTC)

Removing instead of moving

In some cases, if the user choose to move files from an existing category to a non-existing category, Cat-a-lot only removes files from the old category and doesn't add the new category (without report any error). --ŠJů (talk) 15:43, 24 September 2011 (UTC)

Misalignments

5 lines and 4 links; which ones are related to which ones ?

I use cat-a-lot and often I got bad surprise: my photos are moved to the wrong category. It is due to misalignments of the category names and "Copy Move" messages in the box: they are not on the same lines, and often the "Copy Move" concerns the category displayed one line above (or below). I have to count up or down the lines from one end to guess the good category. Thanks, Jack ma (talk) 08:49, 12 February 2012 (UTC)

I guess your category names are just too long ;)
More seriously: it happens occasionally: a workaround is to click on a category above or below and then select the target category from there. --  Docu  at 10:18, 12 February 2012 (UTC)

Misalignments in the box are really a source of hesitation before clicking, to avoid correcting back if moved/copied to the wrong category. And there is no tooltip to help. In the image on the right, there are 5 lines and 4 links. I just know that the 2 last links concern the 2 last lines. So which one for "Buildings in Charente" (the first line) ? Is there any hint I missed ? It seems, surprisingly, to concern nobody else than me, but I think choosing the correct link should be the key point in cat-a-lot. clearer, but still alignment problem
Many thanks for the improvement (orange lines). Unfortunately, the problem still remains (see image); the two last lines are even shifted down. I use Windows XP and Firefox 3.0.5 (and don't want to upgrade because everything else works fine). Jack ma (talk) 08:19, 1 April 2012 (UTC)
Hmm. This looks odd. Firefox 3.0.5 is out of support. I am on WinXP, too and have the latest firefox. Some Add-Ons (if you have them) might stop working but the majority of them can be updated. Unfortunately, I have no FF3.0.5 so I can't test. -- RE rillke questions? 09:39, 1 April 2012 (UTC)
For me, with FF11 it looks like this. -- RE rillke questions? 09:52, 1 April 2012 (UTC)
If you correct the thing, ok, otherwise not a big problem. I just have to do care by counting the lines. E.g. in this other example, 3 first lines on the right concern the 3 first lines on the left (till the horizontal arrow which is the current category), then all other lines are shifted down by 1 line. (I tried in English, same result; apparently not a problem with line wrapping). Thanks anyway, Jack ma (talk) 10:21, 1 April 2012 (UTC)

Fail unsafe

Hi, Cat a Lot isn't working at the moment, I can appreciate that sometimes even computers need to take a rest. But it is somewhat frustrating that you only realise that it hasn't worked when you actually look at your contributions, and discover that all the time you've spent selecting images and moving them to other categories has not actually resulted in any edits. Can you at least make it come up with a message that it isn't working rather than slowly bring up the dialogue box, allow you to select loads of images and then tell you it has moved them without actually doing so? WereSpielChequers (talk) 21:55, 23 October 2012 (UTC)

This behaviour of Cat-a-lot is very unfortunate. Was this (particular move/copy action) a one-time error or can you reproduce it? Thanks in advance. -- Rillke(q?) 16:32, 24 October 2012 (UTC)
Hi Rillke, I was getting that problem for an hour or two, but it has gone away now. I should have checked on my netbook to see if it was replicated there on a different PC and O/S, will do that next time I get such a glitch. Cheers WereSpielChequers (talk) 17:36, 26 October 2012 (UTC)

collapsing box for selecting

Hi, I am working a bit more with cat-a-lot now, and one of the things I struggle with is that the box of cat-a-lot if above the pictures. If you are on a cat with a lot of sub-cats you can't select the right-most column of pictures. If you collapse the box by clicking on cat-a-lot, the selecting is switched off, so you can't select. Is it possible to create a way to collapse the box, while cat-a-lot stays active? Akoopal (talk) 11:55, 6 January 2013 (UTC)

AFAIK, you can change the size of the Cat-A-Lot-Box. Hover the topmost border, and the cursor changes to the change-size-vertically icon, and then click and drag the size. -- Rillke(q?) 13:08, 6 January 2013 (UTC)
Ahh, that already helps. Thanks! However I still think it makes sense to collapse the box, so you see everything, select what you want, and then expand and select the copy or move you want. Akoopal (talk) 17:27, 6 January 2013 (UTC)
I agree with Akoopal that collapsing would be nice but, I imagine, fiddly to implement. Knowing that the size can be changed by dragging is very helpful, though. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 13:00, 8 January 2013 (UTC)

overview

I have only recently come across the work of this bot, and because of its use can I ask if there is any overseer system. Who decided other than the editor who started the process! that an image needs to be moved from one category into another. I am specificially speaking about my continuing experience on the following files - [10] and [11]. Thanks Edmund Patrick ( confer work) 05:59, 30 April 2015 (UTC)

@Edmund Patrick: This is not a bot; it is a script and you are right; the script is tied to the one who makes use of it who solely decides what to do with it and is consequently responsible for that. Therefore, I suggest you talk to Mabalu. If one finds non-constructive edits that do not look like accidents, one may report them to COM:AN/V. -- Rillke(q?) 08:27, 30 April 2015 (UTC)

Feature request: always on top switch

Every time when changing the source folder, the Cat-a-lot window is closing. It would be very nice to have an option to tell the Cat-a-lot window to stay always open (in that particular browser tab where I do the work). I change the source folder quite often, it's quite a waste of time to carefully locate the mouse so many times in order to click on the "Cat-a-lot" label (it's quite small!) to open the window. Fructibus (talk) 15:30, 14 October 2017 (UTC)

What do you mean with "source folder" exactly? And then the window stays always open until you close the tab or close the window? I'm not sure. Can you give a concrete example of usage!? -- User: Perhelion 21:29, 14 October 2017 (UTC)
@Perhelion: sorry I forgot to check this page in a while. By "source folder" I mean the folder where I am at this moment. For example Category:Wrist clasps in the Portable Antiquities Scheme - I am looking for drawings there, so I copy them into the Category:Drawings in the Portable Antiquities Scheme. Then I change the folder (source folder) to Category:Dress hooks in the Portable Antiquities Scheme to find more drawings and so on. -- Fructibus (talk) 00:57, 24 October 2017 (UTC)

Speed cap?

When using Cat-a-Lot editors can get very high edit rates. 200 edits in 30 seconds is plausible (I'm not sure what the maximum possible is I haven't timed). If the user is doing a big batch, they might well use it for several thousand files.

Given that bots are normally restricted to lower speeds, it seems odd that this script allows humans to work semi-automatically at faster speeds. Especially when edits with Cat-a-Lot are not bot tagged, and are not minor edits, and so have potential to things like flood watchlists.

I don't want to restrict the tool's utility, but the above is odd. A possible solution could be put a speed cap on, but if being run on a bot-flagged account allow higher speeds and mark the edits as bot edits.--Nilfanion (talk) 10:02, 13 October 2012 (UTC)

Currently it is violating mw:API:Etiquette (because it sends all requests the same time and also queries each single file while more than one could be queried with one request). I think, I'll make it using MediaWiki:Gadget-libAPI.js which will limit the number of simultaneous requests and also has a cleverer error-handling, especially for anonymous users or users with rate limits. After I did so, it will behave like VisualFileChange (regarding to editing), which is I think a good compromise. This, of course will add additional dependencies and other Wikis using this gadget will have to import all of them. -- Rillke(q?) 10:47, 13 October 2012 (UTC)
I hope that doesn't result in some sort of speed cap. I can appreciate that when you hit enter to move over 100 images from one category to another the actual processing can take an irritatingly long time, but what possible benefit could there be in slowing that down? The person using catalot isn't going to be doing anything else if you slow the process, or at least not online, though I sometimes start a catalot run and go off and make a cup of tea. If you have concerns about people misusing catalot then slowing it down would just waste people's time, surely a better option would be to take the tool away from those who misuse it? WereSpielChequers (talk) 23:44, 14 October 2012 (UTC)
Perhaps if this is a real issue (has it created any issues that someone can point to?) then this could be a user flag so that large (over 100 images in a batch?) and high speed changes are limited to users flagged as trusted to do this work while unflagged have reasonable speed limitations on the assumption that they probably only want to change less than 100 images at a time? -- (talk) 09:24, 15 October 2012 (UTC)
Yes, we could apply different defaults to different user groups for the number of simultaneous requests. -- Rillke(q?) 09:38, 15 October 2012 (UTC)
Yes it is a real issue, I suspect it is the answer to this bug report and one I received at the London Meetup. I'm pretty sure that there is a whitelisting process on Commons, and so one solution would be to tell people who hit this problem to apply for whitelisting. WereSpielChequers (talk) 13:51, 15 October 2012 (UTC)
White lists and restrictions for JavaScript applications are simply stupid since it runs at the client side and can be easily bypassed. Setting reasonable defaults is enough. There is a white list for AWB but I am not inclined consulting this one. -- Rillke(q?) 16:13, 15 October 2012 (UTC)
Since your reply indent leads me to the conclusion that you're answering to my comment: My goal will be preventing sending 200 simultaneous requests to the API. I will let it to the user how many s(he) allows sending at once (a preference) so no one will be able to complain when you are blocked from editing through the API due to a violation of mw:API:Etiquette. Having only 4 requests at once (what I used as a default for VisualFileChange) won't slow down the process a lot; at least for smaller batches. But it will help reducing the database replication lag and the bad impact of it to other editors. If you want to move most files from cat containing a huge number of files to another, you may use {{Move}}. If you want to change multiple categories at once, replacing templates, … VisualFileChange is the better choice anyway. -- Rillke(q?) 09:38, 15 October 2012 (UTC)
Maybe, it sounds like a techincal change will address the issue without compromising too much. I don't really get on with VFC, it seems more reliable and quicker for me to write a bit of Python than puzzle over how to do what I want with VFC (which is rather slow, but this might be my macmini). Cat-a-lot, however, seems easier for simple jobs, even largish re-cats. I guess I am a 'sophisticated user' so if I struggle with VFC, I am not sure that telling less experienced users that Cat-a-lot sucks and forcing them to use VFC would be a good solution for everyone. -- (talk) 14:29, 15 October 2012 (UTC)
You made a lot of words but didn't tell what confused you so much. I don't force anyone to change. I just said it's more flexible than Cat-A-Lot (because you have direct access to the WikiMarkup through option custom replace). But this discussion does not belong here at all; just wanted to give a "preview" how the editing-speed of the tool will change and that, in case you plan to do something more sophisticated, it could be beneficial using VisualFileChange. -- Rillke(q?) 16:13, 15 October 2012 (UTC)
Hi Rillke, forgive my ignorance but I don't understand all the jargon in this thread. Is Cat a Lot going to change so that I can only change the categories of 4 files at a time, or will I still be able to select all and recategorise scores of images - though a bit more slowly than at present? WereSpielChequers (talk) 22:58, 15 October 2012 (UTC)
You will be able to use it as you could use it before. It is just internal stuff that happens behind the scenes in your browser. For larger categories, it will be slightly slower, especially the edit-time-pattern will change (currently there is a long lag and then the counter rises, then it will be more balanced). -- Rillke(q?) 23:11, 15 October 2012 (UTC)

Cat-a-lot doesn't understand a category with diacritics?

Cat-a-lot refused to move some files, perhaps the problem is with diacritics in the original category name? Images whee to be moved from Category:Osiedle Tysiąclecia (Katowice) to Category:Church of St. Mary of Piekary Śląskie in Katowice. Done! All pages are processed. Return to page The following pages were skipped, because the old category could not be found: File:Katowice July 2013 008.JPG File:Katowice July 2013 010.JPG File:Katowice July 2013 007.JPG File:Katowice July 2013 009.JPG File:Katowice July 2013 013.JPG File:Katowice July 2013 011.JPG

Similarly, image File:Katowice July 2013 017.JPG couldn't be moved to Category:Rondo Sławika w Katowicach‎.

Interestingly, Cat-a-lot was able to move images into the Category:Osiedle Tysiąclecia (Katowice) category yesterday so unless something was changed in the last 24h or so, the problem is with the part of the script that tries to find a category that needs to be moved from. May be that I tried to cat-a-lot items from a non (not-yet) existing category: It is possible to select such items for cat-a-lot, but when it is tried to execute the selected items this error msg occurs. A possible workaround is to establish this category temporarely, perform the hot_cat, and then to delete that not needed category; as far as I can remember I did it that way.

Category placement

I've been using Cat-a-Lot over at the English Wikipedia, and it appears that of late it is ignoring category syntax when it populates the categories. See this dif as an example - that last category belongs before the stub tag, not after. Unless I've been more oblivious than usual I'd be prepared to swear that this didn't used to be the way it did things. Can it be fixed? --Ser Amantio di Nicolao (talk) 20:45, 6 February 2016 (UTC)

Hey Ser Amantio di Nicolao, this seems rather an EN:WP special case. Categories should always be at the bottom (except if some special Wiki-syntax is present like noinclude, in this case it appears only general at the template namespace, which is not really supported yet). -- User: Perhelion 12:02, 13 June 2017 (UTC)
The issue at the English Wikipedia is that stub templates add stub categories. Categories are displayed in the source order on the rendered page and we want stub categories to be at the end per w:Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Layout#Order of article elements and w:Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Layout#cite note-4. Stub categories are not hidden so the order matters to readers. w:Category:Stub message templates has around 28,000 templates but they should all end in "-stub". Hello @FDMS4: , I don't fully understand your request. Is it actual? Would it be helpful to use the Ctrl key for this feature? (PS: This was a fix to this request) -- User: Perhelion 00:46, 17 November 2017 (UTC)
✓ Done per Ctrl!? -- User: Perhelion 01:33, 17 November 2017 (UTC)
@Perhelion: For me it would be nice to be able to visit the file page in the same tab (ctrl opens file pages in a new tab, and does not work at all on non-file pages), for example to check the contents of a category before selecting it (Safari doesn't reload the category Cat-a-lot was used on when going back there, thus allowing me to continue selecting categories where I left off). However, I'm using the "picture-in-picture-like" web page preview feature of macOS (three-finger-click or Force Touch) now as an alternative, so my 2016 request for a preference checkbox to restore previous behaviour definitely is no longer "urgent" or anything.    FDMS  4    13:58, 18 November 2017 (UTC)
So this should be a very rare case and no update is needed, except you can tell another key for it. Alt? -- User: Perhelion 16:25, 19 November 2017 (UTC)
Yeah, it's definitely not a must-have. Alt-click downloads the page as an HTML file.    FDMS  4    16:42, 19 November 2017 (UTC)

Feature request: keep a destination category in the Cat-a-lot window until removing it

I need to move various items, from various source categories, into a certain destination category (Category:Islamic carpets). And then I need to keep this destination category "sticked" to the Cat-a-lot window, so I won't need to add it every time when I change the source category. When I finish moving the items into Category:Islamic carpets, the program should allow me to remove the category from the gadget window. Is it possible to implement this feature please? Navigate to category page

When using cat-a-lot, I would like to be able to easily navigate, in a new tab, to the category page of one of the categories listed in the tree. I'd expect center-click on the mouse to do this, as it does with other wikilinks. This does not currently seem possible. —[AlanM1(talk)]— 03:22, 6 March 2014 (UTC)

Process custom list with cat-a-lot

Cat-a-lot only seems to be available on search and category pages. I generate image lists with Catscan2 that I would like to then process with cat-a-lot. I can put them in a wikitable and save them to a page, but cat-a-lot doesn't appear. What can I add to the page to make this happen? I can probably figure out how to mimic the exact HTML that such pages use and plug my images into it, but I'm hoping there's a less complex way. —[AlanM1(talk)]— 03:27, 6 March 2014 (UTC)

Cat-a-lot isn't able to do that. If you enclose your list in <gallery> tags and save the page in your user namespace, you can process it using VisualFileChange (action custom replace or the like or append text, it's a mass editing tool, not dedicated for categories). -- Rillke(q?) 10:52, 6 March 2014 (UTC)

Cat-a-lot for Wikipedia

It seems as if Cat-a-lot is only usable for Wikimedia Commons. However I recently saw a user copy categories using it: w:Special:Contributions/Ser Amantio di Nicolao

So now my question is: how do you use Cat-a-lot for moving article-cats within Wikipedia?
In the case that the code / program is just available to few selected users (because of how easy it is to cause large havoc with it) I think it would be a good idea to add some info about it to this page (especially as the edit-descriptions link here) and think about ways to allow more users to take advantage of it, by either:

  • also programming a "cat-a-lot-vandalism reverter" that easily undoes a (large) cat-a-lot action if that's not possible via other tools. Also some tool that shows all cat-a-lot actions would be useful - probably via a cat-a-lot "tag". Additionally there could be requirements like "autoconfirmed" which would drastically reduce the amount of trolls/vandals misusing the tool.
  • or establishing some "request for copy/move"-system that either:
    • allows users to get a permission (with that I mean a permission by technical means) for the specific action they intend to do (and whose reasonableness they have to explain here) [this would probably require a change to Wikipedia itself]
    • or would be executed by more trusted users who have access to the code/program

But maybe that's not even the reason why I can't use it for Wikipedia?

Verify before leaving page

@DieBuche, Rillke: it would be nice if the Gadget could add a beforeunload listener that checks that there are no checked elements. It is far too easy to accidentally click a link and navigate to another page. Something like this (not tested across browsers):

$(window).on("beforeunload", function() {
    if ($(".cat_a_lot_selected")[0]) {
        return confirm("Are you sure you want to leave the page? You have categories/files selected!");
    }
});

Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 22:42, 29 August 2015 (UTC)

Hello Magog the Ogre, this event can have a negative performance effect (known bug, I mean not so old browsers). Anyway I mean this check is not really necessary, as we should not brother users in general (as leaving checked elements are really not tragic and should be user learning). So we can archive your request? Greetings -- User: Perhelion 11:51, 13 December 2017 (UTC)
@Perhelion: Do you have a source for that? No offense but the statement, as I've interpreted it, sounds implausible. Also it's quite annoying after selecting 40 elements to lose one's work and have to start over. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 02:20, 14 December 2017 (UTC)
@Magog the Ogre: Indeed, it sounds implausible. I heard it this year somewhere (and a similar behavior about window.onload), but I found it not anymore too, only a cache issue on MDN docs  Page-leaving warning on editforms seems standard now, so we/I could indeed bring it on the next version (but only if some was selected). -- User: Perhelion 11:40, 14 December 2017 (UTC)

'Remove from this category'

The option 'Remove from this category' has disappeared from the options? Can it be restored, please? - MPF (talk) 00:43, 4 December 2017 (UTC)

Hey MPF, it seems a bit redundant now. Can you please be more specific why the existing remove buttons are not sufficient? The link was removed to this requests:[13][14] -- User: Perhelion 17:03, 5 December 2017 (UTC)
@Perhelion: I don't get you - there's nothing saying 'remove' anywhere when I look at Cat-a-lot, those two links don't look like anything I get when I open Cat-a-lot. But 'remove' is very definitely not redundant, it is extremely useful for exactly the example of overcat'ing given. - MPF (talk) 22:56, 5 December 2017 (UTC)
@MPF: There should be on every Cat, left from the move button, a remove button [-] like shown here (on the left site of the image)!? -- User: Perhelion 23:51, 5 December 2017 (UTC)
@Perhelion: - yes, I've got a bar showing there as well as an arrow and a + sign, is that bar 'remove' then? It isn't labelled 'remove' in the way it is in the links 6 & 7 above. - MPF (talk) 01:15, 6 December 2017 (UTC)
Yes it is remove ^^, it is also labeled as remove on mouseover. This 'bar' should be the normal and very common symbol for remove (already used on many tools)!? So it seems you got only pushed out of the familiar environment. If you wan't text-links again, you can find them as 'option' in the settings. -- User: Perhelion 01:26, 6 December 2017 (UTC)
@Perhelion: - Thanks! Yes, "pushed out of the familiar environment" is right - something I'm not very good with :-)) MPF (talk) 18:37, 6 December 2017 (UTC)
Currently I'm unable to remove files from a redirecting category (Category:Ruinas). The name of this cat doesn't appear in the menu, only the target of the redirect does. And since 'Remove from this category' has gone, Cat-a-lot doesn't work here. --Sitacuisses (talk) 18:39, 11 December 2017 (UTC)
@Sitacuisses: Okay, I will add this link again, as there are 2 marginal cases where this link could be useful. But an redirect Cat should normally never be removed only, use the move function and it works (as I moved all to Category:Ruins in Ecuador). -- User: Perhelion 23:06, 11 December 2017 (UTC)
(I guess I'm too impatient.) It still doesn't work in Category:Arqueologia (I hit Strg + F5, but didn't restart the browser). The only category needed here is Category:Ingapirca (I added it to Category:Ruins in Ecuador), the rest is overcategorization. From your point of view it may be marginal cases, but it's something I see very often from new uploaders. --Sitacuisses (talk) 23:52, 11 December 2017 (UTC)
@Sitacuisses: ✓ Done You are right, I added the remove for the origin Cat always. -- User: Perhelion 11:55, 12 December 2017 (UTC)

New categories don't show up

Example of endless Loading... message for Cat-a-lot discussion

If I create a new category, and try to apply it to an image in a Category page using cat-a-lot, when I type the first couple of letters to bring up the drop-down list, the new category does not appear. I assume this is some kind of caching issue, and the new categories eventually will appear?

If I continue to type the complete category name and press  Enter, it just says Loading... forever, and never displays the "tree" with the Copy/Move links. It seems to only do this for categories that are not, themselves, a member of any category. For example, Category:Sandbox3 is in Category:Sandbox4, which is in Category:Sandbox5, which is in no category. Sandbox3 or Sandbox4, when typed in the text field, immediately return the tree after pressing  Enter. With Sandbox5, though, it just says Loading...

Workaround: I just realized that, if you press  Enter twice in succession, it solves the problem, so I suppose that's a workaround that we can document if this behavior remains. —[AlanM1(talk)]— 01:57, 7 March 2014 (UTC)

Feature request: reverse my last action

An hour ago, I moved 31 items from one category to another. Then I realized I have to reverse the action. It would be very nice to save the last action somewhere in the users's cookies in his browser, and then to use that data to reverse it - if the user needs that. -- Fructibus (talk) 19:23, 5 November 2017 (UTC)

Hello Fructibus, this feature is already implemented. I've added this in the documentation!? -- User: Perhelion 11:14, 6 November 2017 (UTC)
@Perhelion: Thanks, but can I reverse my last action if I'm in another folder? That implies that I don't have to go find the images that I copied/moved, to select them again, to be able to revert my last action. I know I'm kind of asking a lot, but who knows? maybe it's implemented or you plan to implement it. -- Fructibus (talk) 12:38, 6 November 2017 (UTC)
@Fructibus: No, only the last action on the "folder" get saved for revert. Maybe there is another revert tool or similar for this. (@Rodhullandemu: ?) -- User: Perhelion 12:55, 6 November 2017 (UTC)
@Perhelion: Well, there's a mass rollback tool, but that's really intended to be used against vandalism, and since it reverts all edits on a user's contribs page, it's easy to revert correct edits unintentionally. Obviously a revert tool has to retain the state of the files before the move/copy/delete and it has to do that pre-emptively for every use of Cat-a-lot just in case a revert is required. That's an expense which I'm not sure is justified. I forget now how the original revert option worked because things have been moving quite quickly here. Rodhullandemu (talk) 14:45, 6 November 2017 (UTC)
As Cat-a-lot has now its own change-tag, the last edits can be pretty sure selected with a mass-tool. -- User: Perhelion 22:53, 17 February 2018 (UTC)

Skipping files

@Perhelion: Cat-a-lot skipped all selected files in categories (last time I tried to perform a move from Category:Police commissioners to Category:Presidents of the Policie České republiky) and I was only able to copy the items, but I couldn't move nor remove them. It was skipped, because the "original category haven't been found". It also doesn't work form me on special pages (MyFiles, Contributions). — Draceane talkcontrib. 21:28, 9 September 2020 (UTC)

OK, identified as #Cat-a-lot cannot handle white characters. — Draceane talkcontrib. 20:46, 19 October 2020 (UTC)

Recently, an LTA have been abusing Cat-a-lot to vandalize; two of their accounts are Trustly Bo3 and Teewee bt4. They will likely continue doing so, and as a result I think we should restrict Cat-a-lot's usage to autoconfirmed-only. It is expected that most of its users are established ones so there will be little to no side effects. NguoiDungKhongDinhDanh 00:34, 13 June 2022 (UTC)

As someone who has this enabled globally for various cross-wiki maintenance purposes I think this might restrict other users who do so. I'll send you an email for a different solution. 𝟙𝟤𝟯𝟺𝐪𝑤𝒆𝓇𝟷𝟮𝟥𝟜𝓺𝔴𝕖𝖗𝟰 (𝗍𝗮𝘭𝙠) 19:29, 13 June 2022 (UTC)
