Report by 106.208.91.218

In preventing you from making this edit, the filter worked exactly as intended.
  1. You don't change the contents of a file here on Commons by blanking out the license and category and replacing them with a URL to another image. That's not how uploading works. You need to be logged in to upload. See Commons:First steps.
  2. You shouldn't overwrite a file here on Commons with completely different content. If you want to change which image is used in a particular Wikipedia article in a particular language, you upload the image under a new name and edit the article.
  3. We don't host random non-free content grabbed from the Internet. Please read Commons:Project scope/Summary to understand what this site is about. Do note that if your edit attempt had accomplished what you tried to do, you would have been guilty of copyright infringement.
  4. The current image is more appropriate from an encyclopædic point of view than the underexposed and sunglasses-obscured version with which you tried to replace it.

Tag overwrites of artworks

Artworks unfortunately often get overwritten by users not aware of Commons:Overwriting existing files. Could someone give me a hand with creating a filter to tag these edits? Conditions:

  • It's a re-upload, so not an upload of a new file
  • This re-upload is done by a user different than the initial uploader
  • The file uses {{Artwork}} (look for "fileinfotpl-type-artwork" in the output)
  • And for bonus points, reverting an overwrite shouldn't trigger this filter (don't think the SHA1 is available for old version so I guess just filter out the ones that have "overwrite" in the edit summary?)

You can find some examples in my uploads. Thank you, Multichill (talk) 15:18, 8 April 2017 (UTC)

I attempted this twice, with different file names, and captions. AlexGTech (talk) 09:27, 23 April 2017 (UTC)
AlexGTech: The filter you encountered prevents low-resolution uploads from newly registered users using the particular upload interface that you used. The reason for this is that those overwhelmingly turn out to be copyright violations.
Unfortunately, because of the number of copyright violations, the filter has had to be defined quite broadly, meaning it sometimes stops uploads that aren't copyright violations. And unfortunately, instead of getting rid of the flawed upload interface and directing users here to Commons (which the overwhelming majority of volunteers here would prefer), the Wikimedia Foundation thinks that leading users down this blind alley is a good idea.
You should be able to upload the file directly here at Commons. LX (talk, contribs) 09:30, 23 April 2017 (UTC)

The filter prevented you from vandalising Commons by blanking out the file description, so it's working as intended. There are proper procedures to nominate a file for deletion available to you. Vandalising the file description or making legal threats isn't going to accomplish anything other than getting your account blocked. As for your complaint, I doubt you have any legal basis for it. Vehicle registration is (quite intentionally) public information and the photograph appears to have been taken in a public place with no reasonable expectation of privacy. WP0 filter preventing PDF upload

Moved here from Commons:Village pump/Proposals

My valued mentor wrote to me that it is possible to upload .pdf files; Before that I tried, and only received an unspecified safety warning popping up, leaving me to waste my time. The help sites didn't mention any .pdf files either, so I gave up and converted the .pdf file into a less desirable .png file. When building it into my article, I realised that these .png files (10 of them, called "democracy constitution 01 (-10).png") reside in commons as a lose collection of pages, which could not readily been called-up by a WP visitor, let alone be automatically in the correct successive order... I suppose the above inherently includes my proposal(s).--Fritz Fehling (talk) 02:45, 4 July 2017 (UTC)

@Fritz Fehling: I have personally uploaded PDFs here. Not sure why it wasn't working. If you want to send me the file (and if it fits our scope), then I can upload it for you. —Justin (koavf)TCM 03:30, 4 July 2017 (UTC)

@Fritz Fehling: Just ignore the warning and proceed --Zhuyifei1999 (talk) 03:39, 4 July 2017 (UTC)
Zhuyifei1999: I don't believe it's possible to proceed past that filter. That would make it a little too easy for the rather persistent pirates that have forced the community to make the decision to impose this filter despite the known side effects. LX (talk, contribs) 05:54, 4 July 2017 (UTC)
Hi Fritz! I moved the discussion back here, since the key issue that you're facing seems to be that your uploads are being prevented by a filter, and there weren't really any concrete proposals for the community to discuss. I hope that's okay.
The reason the uploads were prevented is that you appear to be using something called Wikipedia Zero (WP0). Unfortunately, this service has been heavily abused by some very persistent criminals, mainly from Angola and Bangladesh, to upload pirated content. This eventually forced the Wikimedia Commons community to decide to impose this filter, preventing WP0 users from uploading certain file types, which are normally allowed. The filter is crude and there are side effects. Hopefully it can be solved in a more targeted way eventually.
That said, I don't see how File:Democracy Constitution-01.png...File:Democracy Constitution-10.png would fit within our Commons:Project scope. They appear to be plain-text content represented in a format chosen to discourage editing, and the topic they cover seems to be a concept without any apparent notability that you have personally come up with and are trying to promote. If nothing else, they would seem to run afoul of Commons:Project scope#Excluded educational content, and a PDF with the same content would also run afoul of Commons:Project scope#PDF and DjVu formats. SouthCommPR: You encountered two different filters, both relating to ongoing issues with copyright violations. Both filters are quite crude and do have known side effects. It should be possible to avoid the filters by uploading the file in a more appropriate format than a low-resolution JPEG thumbnail or a PDF. Uploading the original vector version in SVG format or, failing that, a high-resolution PNG version, is recommended for logotypes. Before proceeding, I would strongly recommend reading Commons:Guidance for paid editors. LX (talk, contribs) 09:22, 8 July 2017 (UTC)

Muneebahmad1: The filter you encountered prevents new users from uploading certain file types and is intended to deal with an ongoing piracy issue. Because of technical limitations, the filter is crude and also prevents uploads other than those intended. This is unfortunate, but the magnitude of the problem and the persistence of the pirates have made the current arrangement necessary. Hopefully it can be solved in a more targeted way eventually.
That said, Wikimedia Commons is a repository of free media files. We do not host articles, and we only host PDFs under a limited set of circumstances. The reason for preventing your upload may not have been entirely on point, but if your upload had succeeded, it probably would have been deleted anyway with reference to Commons:Project scope#PDF and DjVu formats.
Last but not least, if you're here to promote your business, don't. LX (talk, contribs) 09:11, 8 July 2017 (UTC)

Report by Filederchest

I would like to upload a more than 100 years old film (it is only 11 Megabyte) about the construction of the SMS Szent Istvan Austro-Hungarian battleship in Wikipedia compatible WebM format (VP9 codec), but a filter considered it as unconstructive. You can see the screenshot of the wiki commons answer here: https://cubeupload.com/im/cfn53a.png

The original short 11 Megabyte video is available here: http://adatok1.atw.hu/Construction%20of%20SMS%20Szent%20Istvan.webm

I would like to use it in the SMS Szent Istvan article of English wiki. The videos were created between January 30, 1912, and 17 January, 1914 by a cameraman of the Austro-Hungarian Navy.

Do you know what is the problem? Can you upload this video?

Thank you for your reply/contribution.

Bye!--Filederchest (talk) 17:53, 8 September 2017 (UTC)

@Filederchest: Are you sure the file is in the public domain? There is no evidence that author death is prior to 1947. --Steinsplitter (talk) 12:30, 9 September 2017 (UTC)
Edit: After further checks, it seems to fall under {{PD-Austria-1932}}. :) I granted you the upload flag, so you can proceed with uploading. --Steinsplitter (talk) 12:36, 9 September 2017 (UTC)

Hello! Thank you for the upload flag! The film is about the building of SMS Szent István battleship during WW1, which was sunk in 1918, the author is the Austro-Hungarian Navy, who filmed the process, since the A-H Navy is a legal person, so it "died" with the Austro-Hungarian Empire.--Filederchest (talk) 13:03, 9 September 2017 (UTC)

Maryzrose233: The filter you encountered prevents low-resolution uploads from newly registered users using the particular upload interface that you used.

User:Gary12345cooper: Yes, creating pages outside our project scope is unconstructive. The filter worked as intended, and the message you received explains why (in the first bullet point). We could do with a category, but what you tried to create was not a category, but rather something looking like an encyclopedia article in our gallery namespace. Since Commons is a media repository and not an encyclopedia, we don't host encyclopedia articles. English Wikipedia, which is an encyclopedia, has an article at en:Horizontal boring machine. Preventing the edits you attempted to make was appropriate. The filter worked as intended. As explained in the first bullet point of the message you received, encyclopedia articles belong on Wikipedia, not here on Commons (but you shouldn't be creating articles about your center, since you have a conflict of interest). Did you actually personally create the channel's logotype, as you claimed when attempting to upload it, and are you personally the copyright holder? If not, the filter worked as intended. If you did create the logo yourself, it would seem likely that your edits at en:KKLQ violate English Wikipedia's rules on undisclosed conflicts of interest and the Wikimedia Foundation's Terms of Use with respect to disclosure of paid editing. Sterryyr: The filter you encountered prevents low-resolution uploads from newly registered users using the particular upload form that you used. The reason for this is that those overwhelmingly turn out to be copyright violations.
Unfortunately, because of the number of copyright violations, the filter has had to be defined quite broadly, meaning it sometimes stops uploads that aren't copyright violations. And unfortunately, instead of getting rid of the flawed upload form and directing users here to Commons (which the overwhelming majority of volunteers here would prefer), the Wikimedia Foundation thinks that continuing to lead users down this blind alley is a good idea.
All that said, please read Commons:Project scope/Summary. We host content that is useful for educational purposes. Promoting your own works, particularly if those works are not of any particular notability, is not what Commons is for.
If you are confident that the file is within our project scope, you may proceed by uploading the file directly here at Commons. The photo you tried to upload has dimensions (720×960 pixels) suggesting it may have been grabbed from social media. Even if you did create the photograph yourself, it sounds like it may be a derivative work of the bottle label, which you could not legally publish under a free license without the consent of the copyright holder of the label. A filter for the text 571886/6886

Hello,
Is it possible to create or modify an abuse filter to disallow the addition of the text 571886/6886, on all pages, by IP users? I have noticed that one or several IP users are adding the text 571886/6886 on several Wikimedia projects (without being active long enough to start a discussion) since at least March 2017. I have requested a global abuse filter (meta:Vandalism reports#A filter for the text 571886/6886) but I was unaware that Commons was not covered by global abuse filters. My request for the global abuse filter contains details and IP, but you can find many other IP just by searching 571886/6886 in the summaries of edits by 105.102.0.0/16, 105.99.0.0/16, 105.100.0.0/16, 105.235.0.0/16...

Expanite - when trying to publish i get the message: an automated filter has identified this edit as potentially unconstructive, and it has been disallowed. If this edit is constructive, please report this error.

Birke3500, the filter works as intended. This is not Wikipedia, this is Wikimedia Commons. Here are no articles. Please have a look at Commons:What Commons is not. --Achim (talk) 12:35, 30 November 2017 (UTC)

  • Edit kind: I am attempting to upload a file of our gallery entrance in Paris.
  • Comments: I was able to do it for our Los Angeles space and successfully uploaded the photo, and when I upload this new file it says "We could not determine whether this file is suitable for Wikimedia Commons. Please only upload photos that you took yourself with your camera, or see what else is acceptable. See the guide to make sure the file is acceptable and learn how to upload it on Wikimedia Commons." We did take the photo ourselves… Prazdelavallade (talk) 23:21, 30 November 2017 (UTC)

Screenpint error message

  • Edit kind: I tried to upload images from Flickr, which I am allowed to do, because I am an extended uploader. I even got an automatic possibility to add flickr images, so I decided to add some. However, I am not a reviewer of licenses of Flickr. I suppose this was the error. When I try a single image, it worked very well. This error came with a combination of a single image from my PC, and some additional from Flickr.
  • Comments: I hope you can correct the error in this fairly new and useful option. Thanks and with kind regards, Elly (talk) 10:30, 17 December 2017 (UTC) Elly (talk) 10:30, 17 December 2017 (UTC)

Page contains redundant content that was previously used for testing, or was accidentally created, or contains content that is gibberish or of nothing meaningful. This may also include empty categories, and text placed in talkpages (which has no further history) that doesn't help or refer to the related page.)

  • Edit kind: It is my first time using my sandbox as I am taking the training tutorial. I simply wanted to upload a picture of a hemp poncho I crocheted. I am a fiber artist and hemp is a fiber, plus I thought the sandbox was a place to experiment so it seems odd to be censured at my own sandbox. How do I explain this as an ambassador? Does wikipedia censure hemp? The picture is my own and taken with my own camera.
  • Comments: This is a confusing situation to be in right out of the gate ;) I hope it will only help me be a better ambassador. MarieJosephine (talk) 17:16, 26 December 2017 (UTC)
