Maintenance for errors in a cropped file wanted

I have made a crop resulting in the image File:View from ISS on Monte Rosa mountain massif with highest Swiss mountain Dufourspitze, June 2022 - ISS067-E-152529 - View of Earth (cropped and edited).jpg some days ago. Two issues arose: The original image had 4 annotations, which are now (maybe not exactly precise, my observation) id 1 to id 4 in the new image. The further about 8 annotations (making about 12 alltogether) were added by another user after my crop and are good. Hence, the original 4 annotations are wrong (and are not shown, as they have the old image dimensions, much larger) and should be deleted (I could try myself but have observed very strange errors when editing annotations in the past, so I refrain). This was issue one. Second issue: The camera location data lowermost in the infobox somehow evolved into something wrong during the crop, so that now, a red error message is shown instead. I tried to analyze the code to remedy this, but did not find any location data in the cropped file at all, just "location" without any data behind. It would be nice if the original location info could be restored, but I would be perfectly ok if just the error message vanishes, and no location info is provided. Thanks in advance, Pittigrilli (talk) 11:32, 3 May 2024 (UTC)

@Pittigrilli: I suppose you can just remove the wrong annotations. The good annotations can be renamed 1-8. The location coordinates are in the structured data of the source file. You could copy them to the extracted file, in the location template or in the structured data. However, those coordinates locate the camera in Italy. Was the satellite above Italy for this photo of Switzerland? -- Asclepias (talk) 14:09, 3 May 2024 (UTC)
@Asclepias: Interesting observation, this may very well be the case with Italy. In fact, the border between Italy and Switzerland runs just along the Monte Rosa massif, hence the camera position might just be (theoretically) some inches or some km inside Italy, which would be roughly at the lower (and somewhat right) image border. Thanks, Pittigrilli (talk) 14:22, 3 May 2024 (UTC)
I deleted the wrong annotation sections and renumbered the correct ones, worked out well. I have a hard time though with copying the location from the structured data section of the original file (something with the format), could sb please do that? Pittigrilli (talk) 18:26, 3 May 2024 (UTC)

Image Upload Issue

Hi, I am trying to update the picture profile on a page and it will not let me replace it with the current image I have, it says that it cannot determine whether the photo is suitable for Wikipedia Commons. How do I prove that I own the image? Dsteinmetz (talk) 15:14, 3 May 2024 (UTC)

@Dsteinmetz: Hi, and welcome. I am sorry to inform you that you have triggered Special:AbuseFilter/153 by trying to cross-wiki upload a smaller (<50,000 bytes or <2,000,000 pixels) jpg photo as a new user. The photo you tried to upload is smaller, and you indicated it's your own work. Usually when someone uploads a smaller photo, it is a copyright violation taken from the web. If you took the photo yourself, please upload the full-size original of it per COM:HR, including EXIF metadata. If you did not take the photo, please see Commons:Licensing for why we can't accept it, and have the photographer post permission on their official website or social media or send the photo and permission via VRT with a carbon copy to you. If you can't get a compliant license, the photo may still be uploaded to English Wikipedia in compliance with en:WP:F because we don't allow Fair Use here. If you use our Upload Wizard instead, you should be able to avoid that filter.   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 16:09, 3 May 2024 (UTC)

Technical issue

Hi. I think I might have made an error when creating a deletion request here. I noticed that the prefix "File:" is missing before the file's name. Is it something that can be resolved with a page move or should I ask for an administrator's help? Sorry if all of this sounds trivial. I'm mostly active on English Wikipedia, not on the Commons so I'm not 100% familiar with the rules and regulations. Best. Keivan.fTalk 18:48, 4 May 2024 (UTC)

謝謝--125.230.72.73 23:00, 4 May 2024 (UTC)

Is this revocation reasonable and correct?

I was corrected a while ago, so I wanted to ask for advice. On a certain photo, I performed two editing actions at the same time in one stroke, one to add category A and the other to modify category B. Later, this edit was revoked. This revocation caused Category B to be changed back and Category A to be removed along with it. I asked the other party why they canceled it, and I found out that the B classification I had modified was wrong. Although I had corrected the wrong classification for B, it was only for B, which meant that there was no problem with A. So I asked him why he also revoked A, but he didn’t respond. Since there is no response, it means that he has no reason for the A classification, so I am suspicious of his revocation. What I suspect is that he actually has a better way that doesn't require the undo action. He can only focus on the B classification and manually modify the wrong classification back. Because he has history and can see the previous difference, he can know what the original correct classification was.

To be honest, I not only can't understand it, but I can't accept it, because this kind of revocation feels like one place is wrong, and everything is wrong, which is unreasonable. This is also the reason for the "dispute". Therefore, I would like to ask everyone, if in the same transaction, the editing content is only classified into B, then there is a problem, but A is not a problem, and I choose to cancel it. Is this correct? If it is correct, please tell me why. Thanks

Copyrighted flags?

Hello. I imagine the two flags at the second picture here [1] are copyrighted. The flags (they're actually the two sides of one) were adopted in 1892. However this digital drawing is obviously not from then. The flags I think do pass the threshold of originality from my own judgement. According to the picture the source of the flags would be this 1995 book [2] but the organization represented by the flag does not seem to be mentioned in the book. The organization is the Macedo-Romanian Cultural Society, a private cultural organization in Romania that does not belong to the state. I just created an article for it in English Wikipedia and want to use the flags. Should I upload them here or there per fair use? Super Dromaeosaurus (talk) 22:21, 1 May 2024 (UTC)

The only thing there that I can really imagine having copyright is the branches (mlădițe). Romulus & Remus are almost certainly a copy of something much older; the tricolor certainly can't be copyrighted, and I doubt the arrangement can be. @Super Dromaeosaurus: I take it you disagree, though. Can you say why? - ~
Well I don't disagree, I'd love to be able to upload the flags, I just imagined it would not be possible. I'm not very well-informed on copyright issues anyway. So you say it is okay if I upload both flags in Commons? Super Dromaeosaurus (talk) 09:29, 2 May 2024 (UTC)
I'd actually appreciate other opinions here, because my rationale is a combination of the use of old elements, the simplicity of the design, the date of the overall design, etc. As I said, the biggest issue I see is the branches. Does anyone have a strong opinion on whether they are enough to make it copyrightable? - Jmabel ! talk 14:42, 2 May 2024 (UTC)
Since no-one else gave their insight, and having been encouraged by Jmabel, I've uploaded the flags [3] [4]. Super Dromaeosaurus (talk) 13:52, 6 May 2024 (UTC)

Hola. Záncara (talk) 17:01, 7 May 2024 (UTC)

- Jmabel ! talk 21:49, 7 May 2024 (UTC)
Hola.
Strakhov (talk) 02:15, 9 May 2024 (UTC)

Question about Minecraft

On the English Wikipedia I am trying to make a list, Draft:List of Minecraft mobs and I was wondering if I could go on Minecraft and take screenshots of the mobs and put them in as images. I am not sure if this is plagiarism 48JCL (talk) 01:56, 9 May 2024 (UTC)

Hi 48JCL. I'm not sure it would be considered en:plagiarism per se to do such a thing, but there's a good chance that such a screenshot would be considered to be a copyright violation as explained in COM:SCREENSHOT if either the en:Minecraft software hasn't been released under in accordance with COM:L or the copyright holders of the software don't give their COM:CONSENT for the screenshot you take. -- Marchjuly (talk) 02:12, 9 May 2024 (UTC)

This Commons photo should really be simply titled "Yorkshire, c.1894" I cannot find any reason as to why my team titled it "Hyde Terrcae, Leeds". This incorrect/misleading title needs to be removed please.

Please change title to make it more in keeping with the original Alamy photograph title/description. Thank you115.70.23.77 04:10, 9 May 2024 (UTC)

Hi IP 115.70.23.77. I think the file's description might be a minor issue when it comes to File:Hyde_Terrace,_Leeds,_c.1897.jpg. I'm not sure the licensing for that file is correct. Why do you think the file is {{Cc-zero}}? Did you read the wording of that license? Do you know the "person who associated a work with this deed has dedicated"? If you're Srbernadette, then maybe you and your team need to be a bit more careful when uploading files to Commons. There's quite a lot of licensing related notification posted at User talk:Srbernadette. Even though not all of the files mentioned there ended up being deleted, it seems that enough have been deleted to the point where you and your team might want to slow down a bit until you get a better feel for image copyright. It's possible that this file's licensing just needs to be tweaked, but neither you nor your team should just be uploading files with questionable licenses on the hope that someone will fix the problem later. -- Marchjuly (talk) 04:54, 9 May 2024 (UTC)
Another apparent oddity is the relationship of the image with Alamy, which is where it's described as coming from, and which of course is a commercial service. Did you (singular? plural?) pay Alamy US$45 (or similar) for a version without "watermarks"? (If so, does the contract with Alamy let Srbernadette first award herself the copyright and then magnanimously waive it?) Or did you decide that, wherever in the world you happen to be, Bridgeman Art Library v. Corel Corp. applies? Or did you find a way to remove the "watermark" for yourself/selves? ¶ Though perhaps I'm missing something obvious. -- Hoary (talk) 05:41, 9 May 2024 (UTC)
@Hoary: if it is, indeed, public domain for one or another reason (and from that date, it probably is), the provenance isn't really important. - Jmabel ! talk 18:20, 9 May 2024 (UTC)

Livia Manera Sambuy

Hi!

this summer I try to publish the entry Livia Manera Sambuy, the writer, that it is still in a "draft" status. May I ask you the reason? And how I can fix it?

located in protected area statement

I am trying to add the "located in protected area" statement to an image of a state park. When I do, I get a "Potential issues" icon and the message "allowed-entity-types constraint The property located in protected area should not be used on this type of entity, the only valid entity type is Wikibase item." I cannot figure out why this statement gives the error, and the "location of creation" statement does not. Can someone explain in lay language as I do not understand what a Wikibase item is. Thanks. Nv8200p (talk) 20:41, 9 May 2024 (UTC)

@Nv8200pa: What's the name of the state park? Its possible it doesn't have "Instance of: Protected Area" attached to it on Wikidata's end. I could be wrong but I'm pretty sure it will cause an error in that case. --Adamant1 (talk) 22:46, 9 May 2024 (UTC)
@Adamant1: The image I edited the structured data on was File:Big Tree Texas 2024.jpg and I tried to add "Goose Island State Park" (Q1537740) as an item to the "located in protected area" statement. Regards, Nv8200p (talk) 23:36, 9 May 2024 (UTC)
OK. The Wikidata entry for it does seem to be missing "Instance of: Protected area", but now that I think about it are state parks even technically protected areas to begin with? Because you might might want to look into that before adding the statement to the Wikidata entry. --Adamant1 (talk) 23:45, 9 May 2024 (UTC)

Is this considered "de minimis"?

This is a screenshot of a free and open source software but it has Windows UI. Is this considered "de minimis" or is there too much Windows UI for it to be here. Just wanna know in advance. AuroraANovaUma (talk) 19:12, 9 May 2024 (UTC)

Windows UI elements in the screenshot are rather banal: tick boxes etc. I do not think that they even covered by copyright. Ruslik (talk) 13:21, 10 May 2024 (UTC)
yeah most of it is simple geometry or other copyright-ineligible shapes and symbols, but ill still keep the de minimis tag to be safe
the symbol at the top left is not simple geometry and likely copyrighted tho so that would probably be de minimis as its very trivial and not the focus of the image AuroraANovaUma (talk) 15:21, 10 May 2024 (UTC)

Copyright help regarding AFG s2 25PulsAlu.jpg

Is it allowed to show fotos of little coins from other countries here (like this example: Afghanistan current coin 25 Puls from about 1980, no course value anymore) or are there copyrights, that don't allow this? Problem creating files in the Data namespace

Hi there, I'm trying to create a map file in the Data namespace. This used to work until at least a few weeks ago, but now if I try to create a file, either by clicking on a red link or going to the URL I get a message I cannot create the file. Has something changed? If there's a better procedure to create these files happy to hear about it. Note that an upload using the upload wizard fails as well, files with the .map extension are rejected. Intriguingly, it was pointed out to me that he data space does still accept .tab files, but the structure of .tab and .map files are quite different. What gives?

Hoffnungsfrohe und fröhliche Grüße - FriedeWie (talk) 07:11, 12 May 2024 (UTC)

Maintaining my copyright

Hello, i'd like to upload my photos of the May 10 2024 Aurora and add it to the wiki page but when i go to upload it says by uploading to commons i'll give everyone the right to use it without asking for my permission, i do not wish to do this, the photos are also watermarked to my copyright.

Any help will be appreciated OGWFP (talk) 19:09, 11 May 2024 (UTC)

@OGWFP: Hi,
That's a requirement on Wikimedia Commons. All documents have to be under a free license or in the public domain, i.e. they can be used by anyone for any purpose, including commercial ones. If you don't agree with these conditions, please do not upload your files. Also we strongly discourage adding a watermark, as it greatly decrease the educational value of the documents. Sorry. How can I contact a contributor?

Hi, I'm wondering if it is possible to contact a Wikimedia contributor to ask them a question about an image they contributed to the Wikimedia website? The following url shows a Wikimedia page with an image showing part of a map of the "barque Birman".

File:Annotated_Birman_map.jpg

The Birman was an emigrant ship that sailed from England to new Zealand in 1841. My ancestors were aboard that ship and I would dearly like to ask the contributor where he/she got the map from, so that I can, hopefully, obtain a copy of the complete map? Is contact between Wikimedia contributors and readers permissible?

@GPT externalcomms: In short, upload under a new filename, then change the logo.
If the new logo is either below the threshold of originality (so it can't be copyrighted, just trademarked) or if you are free-licensing it (again, presumably retaining trademark) you can upload it here on Commons. Otherwise, it must be directly uploaded to the English-language Wikipedia as a non-free logo. @GPT externalcomms: I've corrected the licensing. You will want to add categories, as specific as possible (probably descendents of Category:Logo, as specific as you can be to location and industry). Then make the obvious edit at en:GPT_Group to change the logo currently there to the new one. Probably the edit will be more obvious if you edit source than if you use the visual editor. - Jmabel ! talk 14:58, 7 May 2024 (UTC)

Context? Is this about this site? Can you give a URL of where you are having this problem? - Jmabel ! talk 22:19, 8 May 2024 (UTC)
Looks like a problem with locator maps in the wikis, where a template gives coordinates and a map and on the page it produces a map with a colored dot. But if someone is trying to download this product, he gets only a map without the dot. GeorgDerReisende (talk) 17:02, 9 May 2024 (UTC)
It would take a major technological change to "fix" this. The dot is not part of the image: it is just superimposed. To do otherwise, we'd have to dynamically create an actual image file that included the dot, rather than doing this with CSS or some similar technology. - Jmabel ! talk 18:16, 9 May 2024 (UTC)

Harry Potter can be a bit problematic here because there are such well-known visuals associated with the work. Using an image under the license "All rights reserved".

Hello. I found an image on flickr that I could use for one of the articles I am currently working on. I messaged the person who posted it and later received their written permission (which I can provide via screenshot) to use the image on Wikipedia. Is it possible that the image can still be uploaded despite the all rights reserved license since I have the consent of the owner, or is it more of a fixed rule that it cannot be under that license? Hallöchennochmal (talk) 19:12, 12 May 2024 (UTC)

@Hallöchennochmal: , you'd need to have the copyright owner contact COM:VRT to verify they would grant their work a free license. Or they could change the license on Flickr to a Creative Commons license that we would accept. Abzeronow (talk) 19:23, 12 May 2024 (UTC)
Thank you! Hallöchennochmal (talk) 19:32, 12 May 2024 (UTC)
@Hallöchennochmal: by the way, you probably should never start off by asking someone if you can "use their work on Wikipedia". You can start with saying you'd like to use their work in Wikipedia, but Wikipedia (with a few relatively minor exceptions) and Commons both require that images be [[COM:L|free-licensed] (allowing derivative works and commercial reuse), not just that permission be given for use in Wikipedia. So the latter permission is actually pretty much useless: either they will grant a free license or they won't. - Jmabel ! talk 03:18, 13 May 2024 (UTC)

For example, the media view for a category of archival images about Ontario, Canada will show a file titled "Canadian View of the Falls" before a file titled "Niagara Falls, Ontario." In some cases, for some uses, it would be preferable to use the depicted place metadata to organize the media view so as to keep images together. Mordant Fuzz (talk) 17:44, 13 May 2024 (UTC)

I suppose that you can use sort_key. Ruslik (talk) 19:07, 13 May 2024 (UTC)

Delete photos

Hello, On May 13, I uploaded 6 photos with the intention of participating in the "wiki loves the earth" photo contest, not knowing that the contest starts on May 15. After I uploaded the photos, I received a notification that the competition does not start until May 15 and that photos sent before that date cannot participate. I want to delete the photos in order to upload them again after May 5th. Valekd (talk) 18:13, 13 May 2024 (UTC)

@Valekd: I don't believe you can do that and enter them in the contest. Once they are uploaded, they are ineligible. Otherwise, we'd have a bunch of people deleting old work and resubmitting it.
If you simply want them deleted, they are your own recent work, and we can do that as a courtesy deletion, but then please if you want to re-upload and enter them in the contest', get explicit permission from the people running the contest to do so. Or (what I would recommend) you could approach them without deleting, explain your intent and your mistake, and ask if they will let you enter them anyway. Which way would you rather approach this? - Jmabel ! talk 20:22, 13 May 2024 (UTC)

Editing Article on Wikipedia

Ever since I setup my account I have not been able to edit an article or add content. Any guideline for me to catch up? 154.161.25.183 19:23, 13 May 2024 (UTC)

Please move a file to enwiki

Hello, I uploaded a file to commons while that does not fit standards for each country. At File:James Haygood.jpg, the taker of the photo is not deceased for over 50 years. It fits standards for USA public domain, but I believe it does not fit it for the other countries listed. Thanks! Yoblyblob (talk) 14:25, 21 May 2024 (UTC)

Convenience link: File:James Haygood.jpg. - Jmabel ! talk 15:13, 21 May 2024 (UTC)
@Yoblyblob: I don't understand your concern here. Commons' rule is that the file has to be public-domain or free-licensed in the U.S. and in its "home" country, which in this case is also the U.S. It is not a problem for Commons that there might be some third (or in this case second) country where the image is still copyrighted. So I see no good reason to move this file. - Jmabel ! talk 15:16, 21 May 2024 (UTC)

WIKI PROFILE PIC

I have updated the Wiki Profile pic for a client's page. While the Wiki page pic is now updated, I notice that when I do a google search, I still see the old picture associated with WIKI in the search results. I attempted to remove the picture from Commons, where the old picture still exists, but it does not appear to allow me to do that.

Can anyone let me know if there is a way to remove the old pic from continuing to appear associated with Wiki when conducting a google search? Harold Metric (talk) 01:35, 15 May 2024 (UTC)

  1. @Harold Metric: the only basis on which it could theoretically be deleted is as a courtesy deletion, and I'd be astounded if one were granted for this purpose.
  2. We have no control over what Google chooses to show. Removal from Commons would not remove it from Google.
  3. Probably Google will eventually pick up the newer photo.
  4. You say, "I have updated the Wiki Profile pic for a client's page." I hope you are familiar with en:WP:COI and have made the appropriate declarations of your conflict of interest on en-wiki. (Not an issue for Commons, and even though I'm an admin there I'm not going to go look, but if you haven't done this I strongly recommend doing so before your account is blocked for failing to do so. - Jmabel ! talk 02:37, 15 May 2024 (UTC)

Question Regarding the Purpose of Uploading a Work

I was interested in uploading a photocopied 1978 publication of Capital: Volume IV (Theories of Surplus Value) by the Communist Party of the Soviet Union for the purpose of referencing as a primary source in an elaboration of different editions of the work, but saw that I could only upload works which were my own, or which I was given permission to upload.

Seeing as I am neither Karl Marx nor a member of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union, it seems I cannot upload it, and I am struggling to source it given that it was published in a country which no longer exists. Can I upload it in this scenario, or is there a way for me to make a proper useful citation for the work? I see in plenty of other instances that at least the covers of books are uploaded as images attached to articles, and I'm not sure how a lot of them got permission to upload. By all accounts I would hazard a guess that this sort of work counts as public domain, but I don't know the best way to approach the issue. Thanks. AquaticOnWiki (talk) 01:52, 15 May 2024 (UTC)

Commons:Copyright rules by territory/Russia. I think the original text is PD but any translations into languages other then that would be copyrighted. Especially moderns ones where the author took liberties with the translation and/or added their own annotations. --Adamant1 (talk) 01:59, 15 May 2024 (UTC)
I believe the English translation published in 1978 was actually new at that time. Does the 1978 edition have a copyright notice? If so, the present-day Communist Party of Russia is the successor to the Communist Party of the Soviet Union; if the CPSU held the copyright, then the present-day CP still does. On the other hand, if like some CP publications it was without notice, in 1978 that would have put it in the public domain in the U.S.: {{PD-US-1978-89}}. - Jmabel ! talk 02:45, 15 May 2024 (UTC)

Hi Marwood1103. First, please don't post in ALL CAPTIAL LETTERS because doing so is considered by many to be a form of online shouting/yelling or an expression of anger. Next, files are always deleted/removed for a reason; sometimes it turns out be an incorrect reason, but there's always a reason. Furthermore, there's no record of you uploading any files to Commons with this account. Did you perhaps use a different account to upload the file? Did you perhaps upload the file locally to one of the various language Wikipedias (for example, English Wikipedia)? If you can provide the name of the file that was deleted, then it might be easier for someone to figure out what happened and why. Lastly, it's very unlikely that anyone is going to contact you via email regarding any question yuo ask at a Help Desk like this; so, you shouldn't expect such a thing. Any questions you have will be answered in the discussion thread you started; so, occassionally checking the thread is probably a good idea. -- Marchjuly (talk) 01:15, 17 May 2024 (UTC)

Presumably, the same difference as between e.g. Category:Videos of English language and Category:Videos in English, or more generally between Category:Videos of language and Category:Videos by language. As far as I can tell, videos in the "of" categories seem to be about the language, and videos in the "in" categories use the language and are about any subject. First time trying to upload, unsure what to do

Greetings to everyone. I have recently been cruising around ww2 british submarines and translating to my local wikipedia and i've come across an article which doesn't have a photo of the vessel. But searching around with google i came across with this and it seems it's one of the very few available pictures of it. But since it's not my work, i'm not sure if there's the option of uploading it somehow under the corresponding license and ofc, crediting the author. But at the same time it's clear that the website it's not the original owner and they reposted it from an author from the time, but they don't say anything on the website regarding the origin or ownership, so more confusion. If someone could shed some light i will be veeeery grateful. Thanks! :D Llapis (talk) 19:05, 16 May 2024 (UTC)

@Llapis: Hello, The photo is also at the IWM, but it's probably not a photo of the P33, because it's under the title "With the Royal Navy submariners at HMS Forth, the submarine depot ship. 2 to 6 March 1942, HMS Forth, and on board some of her submarines." Maybe the website submarinefamily used it to illustrate the type of submarines, not specifically the P33. If you want to upload the photo anyway, that's probably possible, because Commons already has other Navy photos by the same photographer J H Smith and tagged with the template PD-UKGov. -- Asclepias (talk) 20:26, 16 May 2024 (UTC)

Unable to type doubled brackets

Recently on Commons, I have been unable to type doubled brackets when editing the text content of a page directly. When I type a bracket, it appears all OK. But when I type another one after it, instead of the bracket appearing, it changes the previous bracket to some kind of weird symbol. This is preventing me from quickly adding MediaWiki links. I have to type bracket, space, bracket and then delete the space, or copy-paste the doubled brackets from somewhere. This doesn't happen on Wikipedia, it seems like a Commons-only thing. Is this some kind of fancy new-fangled feature, and if so, how can I turn it off? JIP (talk) 13:31, 16 May 2024 (UTC)

Can you describe what you mean by "editing the text content of a page directly", if different from editing the wikicode in the edit box? Maybe it has to do with something in your user preferences or you might have involuntarily changed your keyboard settings in the edit box (see the small keyboard icon when editing a page). You can also use the buttons below the edit box to add the double brackets around selected text. -- Asclepias (talk) 13:55, 16 May 2024 (UTC)
This would definitely be something on your computer/browser, not in the wiki. - Jmabel ! talk 17:34, 16 May 2024 (UTC)
I mean exactly editing the wikicode directly in the edit box. I don't think it's something on my computer/browser, because (1) it's happening both on my home computer and my work computer, which even run different operating systems (the first one runs Linux while the second one runs Windows) and it's only happening on Commons. Editing the wikicode on Wikipedia works OK. Both of them run on the same wiki software. JIP (talk) 19:06, 16 May 2024 (UTC)
@JIP: So, did you check your keyboard settings as I suggested above? Check that it is on the option "Use native keyboard". Because if it is on the option "International Phonetic Alphabet - X-SAMPA", it does something that looks very much like what you described. -- Asclepias (talk) 19:44, 16 May 2024 (UTC)

On how uploading an image

Hello, I was wondering if I could take a screenshot of a YouTube video and post it so I could use it on a Wikipedia article I made. An image like I say is something like per example "File:Rahkmonov 2.png". Is this allowed? D1D4K10 (talk) 20:49, 16 May 2024 (UTC)

You can as long as the original video is licensed appropriately. On YouTube, there is an option to have Creative Commons-licensed videos that can be rehosted, remixed, screengrabbed, etc. here. —Justin (koavf)TCM 21:02, 16 May 2024 (UTC)
I don't understand the license part, it's a bit confusing D1D4K10 (talk) 21:09, 16 May 2024 (UTC)
@D1D4K10: A screenshot is a derivative work of the video. So you need that the video has a license accepted on Commons to be allowed to upload a screenshot on Commons. Yes, copyright is complex and confusing. Yann (talk) 21:25, 16 May 2024 (UTC)
You can take screenshots of that latter video and post them here because the author of the video allows you to copy the entire video if you want, as long as you give attribution to the original. You cannot post screenshots of the former video, as it's protected by copyright. Did you take a look at COMM:LICENSE? Did you have questions about that page? —Justin (koavf)TCM 21:25, 16 May 2024 (UTC)
I finally did it, is it ok? "File:Clint Hester.jpg" D1D4K10 (talk) 21:06, 17 May 2024 (UTC)
You can look on Youtube at the description of the source video of the file you gave as example. At the bottom of the description is indicated the CC license, which is more exactly the license CC BY 3.0. So, unless there's some particular reason to doubt it, it is fine to upload a screenshot from that video to Commons and to tag it with the template "YouTube CC-BY", which refers to the license CC BY 3.0, and to add the template "LicenseReview". However, the uploader tagged that file on Commons with a different license, CC BY-SA 4.0, which is a disputable move. -- Asclepias (talk) 21:34, 16 May 2024 (UTC)

Maybe you can just try again to add the link. However, you tagged both files with CC0, but there is no evidence anywhere that a CC0 dedication was issued. The message looks more like PD-copyright holder, assuming that the subject is the copyright holder, because at least the email photo does not look like a self-taken portrait. Also, maybe you can add a request for LicenseReview to the pages. I'm not sure if your post on your x account of a copy of an email you received from the subject will be sufficient for license reviewers, but maybe. -- Asclepias (talk) 20:26, 17 May 2024 (UTC)

Orthogonal category trees for events and people

Hello all

I studied graph theory at university so apologies in advance for the technical language. And Wikimedia does support category intersections.

I am currently working on a Wikipedia story (about a climate hunger strike in Berlin as it happens) that makes use of images of events and participants. And frankly, the current category graph is a mess.

I would presume it better to have the events under one category tree and the people under another? And then bring the various images "together" using category intersections? I searched Wikimedia Help for advice on this kind of practice but could not find any policy or guidelines on the matter. Although surely this is a question that does or should arise quite often?

Many thanks in advance for any assistance, RobbieIanMorrison (talk) 07:13, 18 May 2024 (UTC)

Some events are so tied to some person that they would also (or mainly) be categorized under that person, e.g. Category:Assassination of Abraham Lincoln, Category:Joe Biden signs the Climate Executive Orders (2021-01-27), but usually events and people come together only at the level of individual photos. Here's one of mine: File:Steve Perry & Efrim Manuel Manuck 01.jpg. Occasionally there may be so many photos of the same person at the same notable event to be worth a category that intersects the two, just to avoid clutter. - Jmabel ! talk 16:16, 18 May 2024 (UTC)
@Jmabel: Thanks. In some circumstances, my suggestion is clearly not warranted. There are always corner‑cases and other oddities. But here, there are two nice primary branches to overlap: Category:Climate activists from Germany and Category:Hunger strikes in Germany. And with other secondary branches to add that cover concepts like location and similar attributes — although these are sometimes preempted by subcategories. Tx again. Can I use a photograph made in world war II by a man who is now dead to illustrate what sort of work he made?

I have found the picture on cnn: https://edition.cnn.com/2015/01/23/world/gallery/auschwitz-liberation/index.html. RuthAMdJ (talk) 10:31, 19 May 2024 (UTC)

Hi RuthAMdj, Possibly, but the photo would either need to either never have been eligible for copyright protection or no longer eligible for copyright protection under both the copyright laws of the United States and the copyright law of the country of first publication. So, if you can provide more information about the en:provenance of the photo then it might be easier to figure this out. You should also note that CNN seems to have obtain the photo from en:Getty Images (check the lower right of the photo for the attribution "East News/Getty Images"). CNN might've paid Getty a fee so that it could use the photo or is using it under a claim of en:fair use. This attribution likely means that Getty is claiming or at least trying to claim that the photo is indeed still under copyright protection, and that it either owns the copyright outight or is acting as the agent of the copyright holder. If either is really the case, then this photo can't really be upload to Commons without Getty's or the original copyright older's COM:CONSENT (which honestly would be near impossible to obtain given that Getty makes money off the photo). Getty has, however, in the past tried to claim copyright ownership of digitalized versions of older photos that are now considered to be within the public domain, and Commons seems to ignore such claims as en:copyfraud as long as it can be shown that the original photo is indeed within the public domain since digitalization isn't typically considered to be sufficiently creative enough to establish a new copyright under the copyright laws of many countries. So, if you can find this photo some where online or in a print publication where it's clearly being attributed to someone other than Getty, then that might help narrow things down a bit.-- Marchjuly (talk) 11:55, 19 May 2024 (UTC)
@RuthAMdJ: Commons already has this photo at File:Освобожденных оставшихся в живых узников концлагеря Освенцим выводят из лагеря.jpeg. The attribution of the file has varied. It is currently attributed to Olga Ignatovich (1905-1984). The file was kept as part of a multiple deletion request in 2020, but that was before it was attributed. Two other works by Olga Ignatovich were deleted, to be restored in 2059. So, the status of the file on Commons may be uncertain. But it is currently used in some Wikipedia articles. Are we talking about the image of a sailboat at https://www.portsmouthindependents.co.uk/ or something else? Do we know the history of that image? UK threshold of originality is very low, so unless the image (not this particular use of it) is very old (e.g. 120 years, though it could be different if it's attributable to a particular person) it will be copyrighted.
If your only concern here is to use it in the English-language Wikipedia, you can leave Commons out of the picture and upload it to Wikipedia as a non-free logo (which Commons does not accept). See en:File:Seattlestarlogo.png for a good example of how to do this. - Jmabel ! talk 16:45, 19 May 2024 (UTC)

Uploading derivatives

Hello! Is there a shortcut for uploading derivatives of an existing file on Commons? For example, if I crop an image from Commons and reupload it, I have to go through the entire upload process from scratch. This includes inputting the license, the author, etc. Is there a gadget/extension/other feature for me to easily port this kind of information from the original file? Given that there exists an "Upload a new version of this file" link, I can imagine a similar feature that says something like "upload a derivative of this file". Thanks! —Kittycataclysm (talk) 17:09, 19 May 2024 (UTC)

@Kittycataclysm: for crops I'd recommend Commons:CropTool, for other types of derivative works (major adjustments you want to upload as a new file), you can use Commons:derivativeFX. —Matrix(!) {user - talk? - uselesscontributions} 17:29, 19 May 2024 (UTC)

Rules on replacing files with new versions and other options for yearly updated statistics

Hi all

I'm currently doing a project with a UN agency who produce new versions of graphics ever year and want to find an easy and simple way to keep the graphics updated not only on Commons but also on other Wikimedia wikis. I can see a few options, however I don't know what the rules are around it.

1. Is it allowed to simply update the existing files on Commons to the latest version? That way it would automatically add the latest version of the file to each Wikipedia article. 2. If it would break the rules/not be preferable to overwrite the files with a newer version are there any bots which can link the two files in some way and automatically swap out the older versions with the newer versions across Wikimedia wikis, or some other automated tools to make it not a manual process?

Thanks very much

John Cummings (talk) 12:43, 20 May 2024 (UTC)

COM:OW - It'd be best to just upload new files and keep the old ones intact. A diehard editor (talk) 12:49, 20 May 2024 (UTC)
@John Cummings: Additionally, you can have a file with a distinct name marked with {{Current}}, which can be updated, and should be used wherever such quasi-automatic updates will be desired. - Jmabel ! talk 17:12, 20 May 2024 (UTC)
Thank you Jmabel and A diehard editor, one piece of information I missed from my original question is that I'm talking about 10,000s of files (6 graphics per country, in 6 languages and multiple topics). A few follow up questions
Has anyone done anything like this before?
"It'd be best to just upload new files and keep the old ones intact", is this process written down somewhere? Is there an best practice for linking them, showing one is depreciated, automatically updating the Wikipedia
Thanks again
John Cummings (talk) 10:42, 21 May 2024 (UTC)
@John Cummings: if you want Wikipedia automatically updated on the new uploads, definitely use the approach with {{Current}}, use those in Wikipedia, and overwrite those annually. However, unless the data is something like a graph over time, where the new one simply adds information instead of changing information, we'd want all of the old ones as well. So you'd want FOO.ext (marked {{Current}}) as well as FOO (2023).ext, FOO (2024).ext, etc. And we'd be very glad to have older versions as well.
As for linking, a lot of that may simply be a matter of creating appropriate categories (so the information over time would group naturally by being in a category), but you can also use the "other versions" portion of {{Information}} or a similar template. Sometimes it's simpler to do a template for that "other versions" portion: if you have a big series that gets one added each year, it is easier to modify a template each year than to modify every file page. If you are systematic enough about your naming scheme, a single parameterized template should do the job for all the different things that are tracked over time. - Jmabel ! talk 15:10, 21 May 2024 (UTC)

Advice on how to handle better rescan of an analog negative

Shot in Prague during the Velvet Revolution in 1989 on Iflord HP5 135 stock

First to note that I checked with Commons:Overwriting existing files and then searched these archives for clues but to no avail.

I recently uploaded a badly scanned negative (depicted on left). That scan, by a professional lab in Berlin as it happens, cut off the person on the left (as I later discovered). I am now having that same negative rescanned by a fine arts lab at higher resolution and manually cleaned (and also at considerably more expense).

So my question: (1) should I just upload that revised image under the same name, (2) ditto and also request the original scan be deleted (or hidden), or (3) use a new file name and request that the bad scan be deleted (or hidden)?

To also add that I think the image is historically significant and that it will be the first of about 40 images I will upload to Wikimedia shot just prior to and just after the fall of communism in East Germany and Czechoslovakia. Also taken using 35mm Nikon gear with a mix of professional and high‑street negative processing, so generally of high quality.

PS: I also offered the negatives to the German and Czech state archives but neither replied. In any case, I prefer to support Wikimedia.

PPS: if anyone wants to help with interpretation, I would be delighted to make contact!

Thanks in advance, RobbieIanMorrison (talk) 17:02, 20 May 2024 (UTC)

In this case, since you are the photographer and uploader, it is clearly a friendly edit. Since it's the same photo, you can overwrite. I wouldn't bother asking for the earlier version to be deleted unless you have some specific reason to suppress it. It doesn't save any memory, and it may make it harder for any non-admin who might have some reason to want to understand just what you did in terms of upload history. (Plenty of people who don't have "admin" status nonetheless do a lot of tasks that might normally be thought of as administrative.) - Jmabel ! talk 17:17, 20 May 2024 (UTC)
@RobbieIanMorrison: I agree with what Jmabel wrote above. If you are happy that the filename is the best filename for this photo, overwriting with the better image is the best solution in this case, because there's no reason that someone would prefer the image of lesser quality. I would only add that scanners of sufficient quality can do a very good job of scanning 35 mm negatives. So you might have a better control on the result by scanning yourself instead of paying labs for an uncertain result. (It's harder to find negative scanners for large negatives from the 1940s. I'm looking for one to scan negatives I inherited.) Ilford HP5 was what I often used in the 1980s. Given the grain, I am curious to see if the arts lab can really do a higher resolution. Unless they fill the image artificially, which I hope they don't. -- Asclepias (talk) 17:45, 20 May 2024 (UTC)
@Jmabel: @Asclepias: Thanks for the very complete answers. In some weeks there will be two scans to compare! I did question the second lab about the relationship between graininess and resolution and was told that finely pixelated grain can look good on giant prints — make what you will of that! When I upload the second scan, I'll also note the scanning parameters and files sizes for both. This negative scanning is new territory for me — even though I worked extensively with 135 and 120 (6 × 7cm) formats. Tx again. RobbieIanMorrison (talk) 19:59, 20 May 2024 (UTC)

Public domain non-Commons

Hi,

TLDR how exactly do I upload an image to Wiki without uploading to Commons? Totallynotarandomalt69 (talk) 22:13, 21 May 2024 (UTC)

Hi, Go to Wikipedia, click on "Upload file", then click on "Upload a non-free file", and continue from there. -- Asclepias (talk) 23:57, 21 May 2024 (UTC)

I came across File:הבחירה הדמוקרטית.png (the logo of an Israeli political party), which has been uploaded using the false rationale of it being in the public domain due to be published before 1929. However, I was wondering if would fall below the "threshold of originality" and be eligible to be on commons? If not, please delete it. Cheers, Number 57 (talk) 22:50, 21 May 2024 (UTC)

Hi Number 57 The current license does certainly seem incorrect. However, whether the logo itself can be kept as {{PD-logo}} depends on COM:TOO US and COM:TOO Israel (assuming Israel is the country of first publication). The only copyrightable element in the logo is (at least in my opinion) the flower. Perhaps the fower isn't complex enough to be eligible for protection under US copyright law, but it would certainly be eligible for such protection per COM:TOO UK. Since Israel's TOO seems to have followed the UK's up to 1989 before moving more towards the US thereafter, this could be what decides things with respect to Commons. Given that the file is only being used in the English Wikipedia article en:Democratic Choice (Israel), it could be re-uploaded locally to English Wikipedia and licensed as en:Template:PD-ineligible-USonly if it's PD in the US but not Israel; it could also be re-uploaded locally to English Wikipedia as non-free content if it isn't PD in both the US and Israel. Finally, for reference, the same file seems to be treated as non-free by Hebrew Wikipedia . This, of course, could just be someone being overly cautious and playing it safe, but it could also mean some did some digging and decided it wasn't PD in Israel. -- Marchjuly (talk) 02:40, 22 May 2024 (UTC)

War memorial to Long Range Desert Group contact the photographer Graham Bould

I am trying to track down photographer Graham Bould who was the photographer of the War Memorial to the LRDG War Memorial at the Papakura Military Camp in New Zealand. The memorial that we were shown at the camp recently was not the one that Graham Bould had photographed but a new polished granite one. I am trying to track down the original but have not been able to find out where it has gone. It was in existence in 2023 according to the Waiouru Army Museum but is not able to be located now. It would be helpful for me to know where the original memorial was located at the camp as the new one may be in the position of the old one. 2405:DA40:1184:D000:A193:B00:6927:14E2 05:06, 22 May 2024 (UTC)

@Marievalles: Hi, and welcome. You can copy/paste with attribution, or ask a Simple English Wikipedia Admin to export it with all history. FYI, we don't have profiles here on Commons.   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 15:03, 22 May 2024 (UTC)

Border issues on thumbnails

Hey. Could someone more knowledgeable with Commons look into this? Thanks in advance. Tietosanaton (talk) 17:52, 22 May 2024 (UTC)

@Tietosanaton: I have tried my usual tricks, but I can't get those borders to budge.   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 18:48, 22 May 2024 (UTC)

How to add subtitles to a video on Wikipedia.

I have accurate subtitles I'm trying to add to a video if anyone can give me an example or a template that would be very helpful. 67.230.43.126 20:40, 22 May 2024 (UTC)

Click on the "TimedText" tab on the video description page, select the language of the subtitles and enter the subtitles in SRT format. C.Suthorn (@Life_is@no-pony.farm - p7.ee/p) (talk) 10:32, 23 May 2024 (UTC)

Uploading a photo that is a photo of a picture taken in 1889

I have a photo that I took with my cell phone of Winchester Stewart Oliphant when he was in the Washington State Legislature in 1889. The original photo is among his papers that are kept at the ranch house where he homesteaded in Garfield County, WA. I would like to be able to upload this photo to the Wikipedia entry on "WS Oliphant" which I have expanded. Elinor Graham (talk) 20:43, 22 May 2024 (UTC)

@Elinor Graham: This should be OK with {{PD-old-assumed-expired}}. Yann (talk) 09:44, 23 May 2024 (UTC)

Why won't it make me upload an article?

Why won't it make me upload an article? Ilgeniodellamusica 11 (talk) 06:21, 23 May 2024 (UTC)

@Ilgeniodellamusica 11: Because you are on the wrong project. Wikimedia Commons is for multimedia content. Articles should be on Wikipedia. And articles are not "uploaded". Thanks, Yann (talk) 09:43, 23 May 2024 (UTC)

Please delete 2023-09-24 01 CTMA VOYAGEUR 2 - IMO 9119402.jpg

I originally uploaded 2023-09-24 01 CTMA VOYAGEUR 2 - IMO 9119402.jpg but for reasons I do not know, image resolution was lower and most of the metadata and GPS coordinates did not up upload with the image as normal. I tried to upload a new version of the same file but Commons would not let me do this. I was able to upload the same file with a slightly altered file name. Please delete 2023-09-24 01 CTMA VOYAGEUR 2 - IMO 9119402.jpg and keep 2023-09-24 01a CTMA VOYAGEUR 2 - IMO 9119402.jpg. They are the same image and having both is redundant and adds confusion. GRDN711 (talk) 12:51, 23 May 2024 (UTC)

@GRDN711: At the top of File:2023-09-24 01 CTMA VOYAGEUR 2 - IMO 9119402.jpg, you can insert this template:
{{Duplicate|File:2023-09-24 01a CTMA VOYAGEUR 2 - IMO 9119402.jpg}}.

@Asclepias: Thank you for your comments. Based on them, I was able to find more info at Commons:Deletion requests (COM:DEL) and put in the duplicate deletion request. --GRDN711 (talk) 13:56, 23 May 2024 (UTC)

Template:Nav-SE

Regards. Question and request. Why does the text Template:Nav-SE appear on the category page Category:Spoons from Sweden after inserting the template: Template:LocationSweden? Can I ask someone competent to fix this inconvenience? Abraham OFM (talk) 17:20, 23 May 2024 (UTC)

@Abraham: Hi, It's because there's no Template:Nav-SE. This is also the case with other Location templates created by the same user. You can either remove it from the code of Template:LocationSweden, or you can comment it out in the code, or you can create a template of that name or of another name, as you did when you created Template:Nav-PL, if there's not already an equivalent template in Category:Templates related to Sweden. -- Asclepias (talk) 18:07, 23 May 2024 (UTC)

Hungary · United Kingdom - Templates

There are Template:Location Germany and Template:Location Poland. Are there similar templates for the UK and Hungary? Thank you very much for your answer. Abraham OFM (talk) 17:27, 23 May 2024 (UTC)

@Abraham: Given that the two examples you give are red links, I believe you meant {{LocationGermany}} and {{LocationPoland}}. I don't offhand see anything at all similar for Hungary. The only thing I see at all like this for [part of] the UK is {{Location map UK England}}. - Jmabel ! talk 21:26, 23 May 2024 (UTC)

How do I delete a photo of myself?

How do I remove a photo of myself? Tbkowalski (talk) 18:05, 23 May 2024 (UTC)

@Tbkowalski: If you are asking how to remove it from Wikimedia Commons, you can nominate it for deletion (you can use the link "Nominate for deletion" from the file description page) and indicate a reason. The photo may be deleted if it's not in use, if you're not a notable person or for some other good reason. -- Asclepias (talk) 18:15, 23 May 2024 (UTC)
