Reversing image and removing resulting background

G'day, File:21st SS Division Logo.svg is actually a reverse image of the actual divisional symbol which appears in reliable sources. I have tried reversing it using an online tool, and that much has been successful, but it then has a black background. Could anyone point me in the direction of a tool that can reliably remove the background so I can upload it as the correct version? Thanks in anticipation, Peacemaker67 (talk) 04:15, 1 April 2023 (UTC)

@Peacemaker67: Convenience link: File:21st SS Division Logo.svg. So are you basically saying the colors are reversed? Because it is left-right symmetric. Wouldn't it need a black (or at least non-white) background if "reversed" back, since the outer line would then be white? I don't have a tool to recommend (someone else here may) but at worst you could get help at Commons:Graphic Lab/Illustration workshop.- Jmabel ! talk 14:58, 1 April 2023 (UTC)
Yes, the colours are reversed. The eagle should be black, not white. Thanks for the tip, I'll ask there. Cheers, Peacemaker67 (talk) 23:58, 1 April 2023 (UTC)

Hello, how can I upload a link to my page?

Adding a link to my page, I have a news paper article I would like to use. Eggcellent lighting Ltd (talk) 09:01, 1 April 2023 (UTC)

  • It's not clear what you are trying to do. By "my page" do you mean User:Eggcellent lighting Ltd or something else? By "adding a link" do you just mean putting a URL on the page? You can do that in the most obvious manner, put the URL there.
  • If you are talking about putting an image on a Commons page, to do that the image first has to be uploaded to Commons, but almost no newspaper from the last 70 years or so (nor many even older) will be eligible for upload here. - Jmabel ! talk 15:02, 1 April 2023 (UTC)

1870 Battle of Sedan Photograph

There's this photograph from 1870 capturing a battle at the French town of Sedan, reportedly the first photograph of an ongoing battle. I want to upload this image to Wikimedia as I believe it's of historical significance and the photograph was taken before 1928, where photographs are in public domain.

Only problem is that this photo was obviously published first in France in 1870 but Wikimedia rules state that photographs must comply with copyright rules in the United States and I have no clue when this photo was first published in the United States or if it ever was published there. I've tried searching the answer to no avail so I have no clue if I can upload the image here or if it's even possible. Can you help me?

This is the photograph in question

Uploading images formerly from DVIDS

Since the withdrawal of NATO forces from Afghanistan, most Afghan-related images are taken off their servers (likely to prevent Taliban from doing OSINT). I can only find most of the early images via garystockbridge617.getarchive.net. However, I don't have access to get hi-res images off to upload the Afghan-related images from yesterday (April 1). Would like some assistance if a user can find those hi-res images to override my initial uploads. Ominae (talk) 08:16, 2 April 2023 (UTC)

Did you try to scavenge Internet Archive's Wayback Machine? A lot of the times public resources like this are archived on Wayback Machine and even if they get deleted in the original site, the archived copy still remains. I use it fairly frequently. Polda18 D C 08:03, 4 April 2023 (UTC)

Defamation, Hate Speech, etc.

Are there any terms or conditions that come with image from WikiMedia regarding their use in manners that might be considered libelous or derogatory (e.g. defamation, racism, hate speech, etc.)? For example, imagine if someone used an image of Bill Gates and modified it, giving him devil's horns or showing him in association with Jeffrey Epstein. I understand that Bill Gates could sue if he thought the image was libelous, but can the owner of a WikiMedia image sue if someone uses their image in a manner that they find offensive?

Thank you.

David Blomstrom WickedBear (talk) 20:23, 2 April 2023 (UTC)

  • @WickedBear: Wikimedia has nothing to do with the matter: we just host the image, we don't own it, we don't license it. The owner of the image could sue if it is a license violation; that would depend on the particular license granted. - Jmabel ! talk 15:20, 3 April 2023 (UTC)
    • @WickedBear: In addition to the licence, there is (in many countries) the author's moral rights to a work, which prohibit its use in contexts or with modifications that could defame them. This right cannot be waived in general terms, such as in the CC licences, only with a more specific permission. –LPfi (talk) 07:42, 4 April 2023 (UTC)

Reverting a category rename

I think that this rename of Category:Abhinav Shukla to Category:Nileshpatelxyz should be reverted, because it appears to have no rationale other than self-promotion by User:Nileshpatelxyz (whose account has since been globally locked). But I am having difficulty making the revert: clicking on 'Undo' gives the error message 'The edit appears to have already been undone', and attempting to rename the category back to the old name gives the error 'A page already exists[...]'. I have looked at Commons:Rename a category, but it does not describe how to revert a rename. Is there I way that I can do this, or should I post a request somewhere? The reverted name should be deleted, rather than remaining as a redirect. Thanks, Verbcatcher (talk) 23:25, 3 April 2023 (UTC)

Can I upload my own photo?

I am an author and want to upload my own photo taken by myself. Mymindguide (talk) 06:10, 4 April 2023 (UTC)

If you are the photographer (and you haven't given your rights away), then there should be no problem – other than if people doubt that claim. For File:Austrian Author Kurt Friedrich Gassner.jpg the "selfportrait" in the image description is good, as it is common for novices to claim "own work" regardless of photographer. One caveat: if the photo is previously published elsewhere, then people may question your claim, and in that case an email exchange according to COM:VRT may be needed. –LPfi (talk) 07:30, 4 April 2023 (UTC)
@Mymindguide: And one other caveat: when you say "I am an author," if you've actually had work published by a reputable press then, yes, a photo of you would be within scope; if you are just self-published, there is a fair chance that photo would be deleted as an out-of-scope personal photo. - Jmabel ! talk 15:21, 4 April 2023 (UTC)
Oops. The article in Wikipedia in German does list 25 books (if my German serves). Oddly, they are all published in 2022 (a surprising feat!) and no publishers are given. –LPfi (talk) 15:53, 4 April 2023 (UTC)
The ISBNs point at my-mindguide.com as publisher, with Kurt Gassner as contact. Yes, seem self-published. –LPfi (talk) 15:58, 4 April 2023 (UTC)
So, when you describe File:Austrian Author Kurt Friedrich Gassner.jpg, are you saying that you are both the writer Kurt Friedrich Gassner and the photographer Michelle Cherilly Hirnsberger at the same time? -- Asclepias (talk) 16:53, 4 April 2023 (UTC)
You mean a self-portrait made by borrowing her camera (the Exif does not tell who was holding it)? I assume letting her take the photo would have been simpler and more easily resulted in a good photo. –LPfi (talk) 18:35, 4 April 2023 (UTC)
But then she would own the copyright, and we'd need email as described at COM:VRT. - Jmabel ! talk 18:58, 4 April 2023 (UTC)
Borrowing a camera doesn't transfer copyright. You mean that he thought taking the photograph himself would be easier than the VRT bureaucracy, but then the unlikeliness of that arrangement means he needs to go via VRT anyway. Then comes the scope question. At this point I don't think he is remarkable enough for having a photo, nor as active a contributor to have a personal image. On the other hand, the photo is an example of portrait of an Austrian in the 2020s, only that here we have full information on him. It is much more valuable than selfies of a "me" or a "Bob" that we are trying to keep at bay, as lack of background information don't allow educational use of those. –LPfi (talk) 07:22, 5 April 2023 (UTC)
@LPfi: sorry if my "then" was unclear, I meant your latter scenario where she had taken the photo, which is what I presume happened. - Jmabel ! talk 15:27, 5 April 2023 (UTC)

I've created this image File:ELVES_photo_by_Valter_Binotto_27-Mar-2023.jpg, which loads correctly in the English-language article Upper-atmospheric_lightning. The author, who gave me the file already decreased the size of the file for fair use. When I try to add the same picture to the Italian-language, corresponding article [Getto_blu], it won't load. What can I do to make that happen please? Gciriani (talk) 20:45, 6 April 2023 (UTC)

You need to upload it here on Commons for it to show on all projects. However, as it is non-free, you need to upload it to every project were it is to be used separately. Not all projects will accept it, the terms for "fair use" vary across projects, see meta:Non-free content or, for Wikipedia in Italian, it:Wikipedia:File non liberi. –LPfi (talk) 23:42, 6 April 2023 (UTC)

Carl Auböck (categorisation question)

Question of order/hierarchy: The Austrian company Carl Auböck (or pehaps I should say the family that owns it) has four generations of people named "Carl" (please see: w:Carl Auböck). Two of them have Commons categories: c:Category:Carl Auböck (architect) and c:Category:Carl Auböck (painter), and there is a redirect from c:Category:Carl Auböck to Category:Carl Auböck (architect). My question is: wouldn't it be more logical to have both of these Carls under a top level category for "Carl Auböck" or "Carl Auböck (company)" (with no redirect)? My technical skills and knowledge of Commons are not sufficient to make this change (otherwise I would probably just w:WP:BOLD do it). Cheers, Cl3phact0 (talk) 16:41, 4 April 2023 (UTC)

PS: I realise that this sounds like an April Fools' Day prank or a Dr. Seuss story, but I assure you it's not!

Too many Carls indeed! Is this something that you would be able to do? I'm not comfortable enough with the technical aspects of the process to be certain of achieving the desired outcome. -- Cl3phact0 (talk) 07:40, 5 April 2023 (UTC)
@Cl3phact0: If you can lay out the intended category hierarchy here (that's the hard part for someone unfamiliar with the subject), then I'm sure someone else can actually implement it. - Jmabel ! talk 15:29, 5 April 2023 (UTC)

I changed Category:Carl Auböck to a disambiguation page with a red linked category for the company in case you had files that need to go there. I hope that helps! -- Deadstar (msg) 15:37, 5 April 2023 (UTC)

NB @Cl3phact0: - This may not be your expertise, but perhaps you can help: this file File:Karl Auböck, Flugmaschine 1920.jpg is incorrectly licensed as "own work" by the uploader who seemed to have grabbed it from de: wiki. If you have any information about this file and the copyright status, can you please add it? There are also other files in the categories related to this artist that are licensed with a CC-by-SA license without a website mention. -- Deadstar (msg) 15:47, 5 April 2023 (UTC)
Re: Licensing, unfortunately, no, I don't have any additional information. I only just learned that Carl Auböck (II) was a painter too! I'm looking at doing some work on the Wikipedia article, and was rummaging to see what might be available over here on the Commons side of the house.
In another somewhat similar situation concerning image rights of a creative/visual arts biography, I've been working with another editor who seems to share some of my interests, and I believe that they may have tried to contact the company itself to get a confirmation of rights sent to VRT. I've also tried to prod the editor who uploaded the files to clean-up the rights, thus far to no avail. Not sure what the policy is on this or if you're inclined to do that sort of thing, but it might be worth a go.
Re: Original categorisation questing, yes, I think that the way you've done it makes sense. Maybe in future, if and when my Commons skills over are up to to the task, I may have another idea or suggestion, but as it stands, you've solved the problem from my perspective.
I suppose one might ask if there's a better way to name the individual Carls (e.g., I, II, III, IV), but again, that's a bit out of my lane. -- Cl3phact0 (talk) 16:18, 5 April 2023 (UTC)
PS: Also see Wikidata, which I've endeavoured to tidy-up a bit too, although the information isn't connecting here on Commons. -- Cl3phact0 (talk) 16:28, 5 April 2023 (UTC)
@Cl3phact0: I've seen Sr. (or no suffix), Jr., III, IV, etc.   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 18:09, 5 April 2023 (UTC)
They use I/II/III on their website here. They also mix "karl" and "carl" for the same person. I am happy to change it to whatever, let me know what is most suitable. I also saw that the company is generally referred to as "werkstätte carl auböck" (and not just "carl auböck"), so that also can be changed. -- Deadstar (msg) 08:39, 7 April 2023 (UTC)

Video uploads

Is anyone recently successfully uploading videos? If so, how exactly are you doing it? Can I take more than one screenshot of any part of a YouTube video of which I am neither author nor owner (however which in the description of the video itself bears the wording "License Creative Commons Attribution License (reuse permitted)") and then upload it here to commons? If it can be done in theory, how can it be done in practice? Is there a tool here on commmons that allows you to take screenshots or do I have to do it "offline" and upload the screenshot directly? Example from this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gZgWVEeC0rM i want to take a "panoramic mountains snow ski" screenshot and uploaded on commons. This is legal and possible to do?37.159.125.117 17:24, 7 April 2023 (UTC)

How do I change the category of the biography from "living person" to "2023 deaths"? I need to update the infobox too... Reiff (talk) 21:45, 10 April 2023 (UTC)

Most categories, such as Category:Ed Asner will get categorized due to some of the information at our sister project Wikidata (in this case, at Q154421). Categories about birth and death should get information from Wikidata rather than locally, so if you have a source that a person has died, you should update the information at our sister project. @Brevis723: Is there some reason why you seem to have posted the same request in English here on a bot's talk page about 10 minutes before posting it here above in Japanese? Are you asking about File:Syuyuno-toki-Live.jpg? If you realize you made a mistake in a file's licensing and want to nominate the file for speedy deletion yourself, you can do so by following the guidance given in COM:CSD#G7. If English isn't your first language, you can scroll to the very top of COM:CSD and click on "日本語" for a Japanese translation of the page, but basically all you need to do is go to the file's page, click edit, and then add Template:Db-author to the top of the file's page. Click "Show preview" to make sure the template has been added correctly, and then click "Publish changes" if it has. -- Marchjuly (talk) 11:54, 1 April 2023 (UTC)
It's a Google translation, so I'm not sure if everything is included. thank you for your reply.
When I posted on the bot page, there was a description to post questions here, so I posted it here again.
Also, is the image described this time deleted once? The reason is that I wanted to make a deletion request because it was taken in the form of being deleted and I would upload it again with the official license information.
In addition, File:Syuyuno-toki-Live.jpg is a photo taken by myself, and I own all the rights, so there is no need to delete it. Brevis723 (talk) 01:10, 2 April 2023 (UTC)
@Brevis723: What is "the official license information"?   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 12:22, 2 April 2023 (UTC)
It means that you want to re-register after entering the correct information.
As it stands now, no matter how many times you re-register, the previous information remains, so it will continue to be deleted. Brevis723 (talk) 06:17, 4 April 2023 (UTC)
I posted a question because I didn't know how to make a deletion request in a state where I could not refer to the image because the violation had already been judged. Brevis723 (talk) 01:15, 2 April 2023 (UTC)
@Brevis723: You may still refer to a filename after the file has been deleted, as Admins may still see the file.   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 11:02, 11 April 2023 (UTC)

Declassified document

Hey, I am not sure if I am allowed to upload a screenshot of a declassified document. It is from the archives of the U.S. Department of Energy. I would like to include a scheme, included on this PDF scan of the original report, on a Wikipedia article about a B-52 crash at Thule Air Base in Greenland. I know that PDF formats are allowed, but I am not sure about a part of a scanned document (i.e. a screenshot). The document is indeed like aforementioned declassified and dates to 1968.

Alternatively, if not allowed to upload a screenshot of it - would I be allowed to upload the whole PDF File?

Old version of file displaying, purge not clearing

The main image at File:Nikon_F50_BL_(filter_retouch).jpg shows an older version of the file from the history (i.e. one with a grey background rather than the latest version's white) and has been doing so since I uploaded it a month ago.

Forcing the (client-side) browser cache makes no difference, being logged out makes no difference.

Server-side, using the "purge" gadget or "action=purge" doesn't seem to do anything, and a few other files I uploaded around that time have this problem too.

(IIRC I came across something similar *years* ago and never really found out what the deal was then either.)

Help or insight would be welcome, thanks.

Ubcule (talk) 19:40, 14 April 2023 (UTC)

Which version do you see? I suppose the first version, which is the only one with a grey background. There's probably something stuck at some place between Commons and your system. Hard to tell what exactly. (Not a scientific observation, but this sort of problem seems to happen more to viewers in Europe. Maybe due to an intermediate server. The practical consequence may be limited, if you can view the current version in sizes in which the old version had not already been viewed.) -- Asclepias (talk) 20:00, 14 April 2023 (UTC)
@Asclepias: ; Yes, it's the original upload with the grey background that's shown on the page here (this is a scaled 1104px version that- if you view on its own via "open image in new tab"- gives [1] still with the grey background).
But clicking on the 1104px version to get the *full-scale original* file directly *does* show the latest version with the white background.
I'm sure I've had problems with the old versions showing up in articles as well, but that doesn't appear to be the case now.
Ubcule (talk) 20:50, 14 April 2023 (UTC)
It seems that you have already exhausted the list of usual tricks, which can solve the problem when the cause is located at one end (browser cache, most frequent cause) or at the other end (main server, purging or editing the Commons page, sometimes). I don't know of a trick to force the uppdate of whatever cache might exist between the two. The problem may affect a certain number of users who receive the image through the same intermediate path as you. -- Asclepias (talk) 21:40, 14 April 2023 (UTC)
@Asclepias and Ubcule: I used the "Thumbnail Purge" gadget (with no immediate effect) and then purged the file description page with the "*" tab from the "Page Purge" gadget, and now the grey is gone. Please see Help:Purge for documentation of those gadgets, and COM:PURGE for our best guidance on purging.   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 09:30, 18 April 2023 (UTC)
@Asclepias and Jeff G.: - Yes, the grey is gone for me too on that example, so you clearly forced a server-side purge at whatever level was meaningful. The "generate thumbnail" gadget- which I already had enabled, apparently- works for me on other examples too (after forcing the browser- i.e. client-side- to reload as well). Maybe I should have read more closely and spotted that one myself, but I didn't(!) so thank you for your help. Ubcule (talk) 19:07, 18 April 2023 (UTC)

Font bug on preview

Hi there, I have been having some problems with my images (SVG files) regarding the image preview on a file. For some reason it keeps bugging out the image with werid font placement then the original file has, For example compare the preview of Stockholm county population pyramid to the actual file when you click on it here.

This has happened on numerous other files, here, here, here and here, but I am not sure how to fix it. I am saving them just from Excel after creating them then uploading them straight to here. Going into Inkscape to try and fix brings up the actual file font so I am really unsure what the problem is, any help would be appreciated if can be provided. Scans of 100+ year old photos?

Can I scan photos from 100+ years ago, available at a public library, with the photographer himself long dead? Or do I need permission from the library? TheGamerFoot (talk) 00:36, 12 April 2023 (UTC)

Very often... but it depends - more info is needed. Copyright laws are different in different countries, so info would be needed as to what country, and in many countries when the photographer died. -- Infrogmation of New Orleans (talk) 00:46, 12 April 2023 (UTC)
This would be in the U.S, and it would be the Alaska State Library. The photos are by Vincent Soboleff, who died 1950. Do you need more info? TheGamerFoot (talk) 00:58, 12 April 2023 (UTC)
(Edit conflict) Hi TheGamerFoot. You will only need permission from the library if they are either (1) claiming copyright ownership over the photos or (2) they have some in-house rules stating library users need permission to scan items in the libraries collection.
Regarding (1), if the photos are as old as you claim they are, then they are most likely no longer eligible for copyright protection due to their age; this, however, could depend on the location of the library as well as when and where the photos were first published. Copyright laws can vary quite a bit from country to country, but under US copyright law, for example, photos first published prior to January 1, 1928 are no longer eligible for copyright protection and considered to be within the public domain. The copyright laws of most other countries seem to be similar in this regard, but some might treat such content differently. If you can provide more information about the en:provenance of the photos, then it might be easier for someone to give you a more specific answer. Many libraries and other organizations claim (or at least try to claim) copyright ownership over digital reproductions in their collections even when the original work is in the public domain. For the most part, I believe, the Wikimedia Foundation doesn't recognize this as a valid copyright claim and treats it as COM:2D copying; that, of course, still doesn't mean the library will not try and enforce such a copyright claim. So, you should check the photos to see if they have any associated documentation and whether there's anything mentioned about copyright in that documentation.
As for (2), if the library has any non-copyright restrictions in place regarding its collection, then that's between you and the library. Such in-house rules aren't, for the most part, a concern of Commons, but they could affect any relationship you might have previously established with the library. -- Marchjuly (talk) 00:58, 12 April 2023 (UTC)
If they were published in the US no later than 1927, they are 1950. - Jmabel ! talk 01:04, 12 April 2023 (UTC)
Upon further investigation, the Alaska State Library's sections on library law do not seem to have any special copyright restrictions that I could find.
I think it's safe to say that the pictures are allowed to be uploaded. Especially since all the photos were taken between 1896 and 1920. TheGamerFoot (talk) 01:28, 12 April 2023 (UTC)
For most of the world, where copyright lasts 70 years pma, in this case to 1970+50=2020, they entered the public domain in 2021 (if eligible for copyright in the first place, which I assume is the case). For the US, for old works, this counts only if they were still unpublished that year (with the legal definition of "published"). Otherwise the publication year is what counts, and even old works by long dead authors can still have a copyright. If they may have been first published after 1927, you have to do some research. There is also the (probably far-fetched) possibility that they were first published in the EU after 2020 and the publisher that way got a 25-year pseudo-copyright. –LPfi (talk) 07:27, 12 April 2023 (UTC)

Help to Classify "De (surname particle)" in "Latin or "Germanic"

Hi, I need help classifying the surname particles from the the Category:De (unspecified surname particle)‎ to the De (Latin) and De (Germanic) categories. Many of the surnames belong to Belgium, but I don't know if they are of French (Latin) or Flemish (Germanic) origin. After de classification concluded, the Category may be deleted, thanks JotaCartas (talk) 03:25, 12 April 2023 (UTC)

  • Why are we doing this at all? Why should this sort of thing be a concern on Commons? How will this help an end user looking for a category? If anything, I'd think it will make it harder by forcing them either to know an etymology or have to look in two separate places. - Jmabel ! talk 03:37, 12 April 2023 (UTC)
Well, I did not made de actual classification, but I created de Category "De (unspecified surname particle)‎" because I don't know much about Germanic languages, and less about etymology. The aim is to eliminate this "unspecified" category. Any way perhaps you are right, thanks JotaCartas (talk) 03:45, 12 April 2023 (UTC)
Hi JotaCartas, there are some books (like ".. Vornamenbuch") and e.g. this website, all what I know is unfortunately in german. Hope this will help you. Regards --Wilhelm Zimmerling PAR (talk) 05:33, 12 April 2023 (UTC)
Hi, Wilhelm Zimmerling PAR, indeed German "it's not my beach" (idiomatic portuguese) it mean that I don-t know a word of German , thanks anyway JotaCartas (talk) 05:38, 12 April 2023 (UTC)
I can't help with this specific issue but there is a discussion at VP at Commons:Village_pump#Category:French-language_surnames precisely because of the level of detail spent on this issue. For example, we have categories like Category:Surnames from Ariège which contains surnames by the alleged department within France where a surname came from. Of course, no one has or provides any sources for any of this but surnames and surname particles are currently buried under layers and layers of categories and people meanwhile fight over which are the correct category. Note that surnames by continent and country, and given names by ethnicity have been deleted while English-language surnames from French and ethnicity is currently at CFD. Ricky81682 (talk) 07:28, 12 April 2023 (UTC)
At the risk of being considered a "joker", I don't see a big difference between the Latin "De" and the Germanic "De"😊.
Seriously - the organization of Commons into distinct categories does little to help the end user, when he wants to find a name (or something else) he just needs to do search 🔍, and he is directed to the item in question. Of course, having all the Commons items in a big bucket 🪣 would be impossible to accept (especially in relation to the photos), hence the need for the category tree (I say).
I actually run away from CFD's, because not everyone is moderate and I don't want to have to throw my PC out the window (🪟🤾‍♀️💻) due to any discussion. Thank you all so much for putting up with me. JotaCartas (talk) 14:06, 12 April 2023 (UTC)
I don't even care about the difference. The problem to me is that no one is sourcing any of this including at the actual Wikipedias which is where it belongs. All you get are guesses here and random users fighting about it while the rest of us have to juggle trying to figure out what the heck is going on. There are probably six or seven different surname discussions because of all the various categorizations and now users fighting about whether a surname is German ethnically (a CFD) as opposed to in Germany the country (now deleted) as opposed to from Germany the country (a CFD) as opposed to from the German language (not being discussed). The "surnames encountered in Louisiana" one is also an issue (is Jindal encountered in Louisiana because it's the surname of a former governor?). Given names though have been somewhat resolved to not being organized by nationality or by ethnicity in one CFD. Surname particles are next I guess. You would think that there would even be a stub article at German wiki for Category:De (Germanic surname particle) if people actually cared as opposed to making this all up. Ricky81682 (talk) 20:45, 12 April 2023 (UTC)
Thank you again. I will try to solve the issue myself. I decided to classify the "de" taking into account the country of origin of the surname (France->Latin, Netherlands->Germanic and so on), and after a couple of hours searching the web, remained about 30 Belgium surnames that really, even looking into the spelling, I am not able to decide. For the moment that will stay like so. best regards JotaCartas (talk) 21:26, 12 April 2023 (UTC)
I wonder if all three should be discussed for deletion and all merged to Category:De (surname particle) but I've done enough surnames CFDs for now. Either way, maybe all of them should be merged into unspecified for later sorting. Ricky81682 (talk) 22:29, 12 April 2023 (UTC)

Need help resolving COM:OVERCAT in Bruce Lee-related cats

Could someone familiar with Bruce Lee's career, specifically The Game of Death take a look at Category:Game of Death/Category:The Game of Death and related subcats/parent cats? The subject itself is confusing to me, because there are multiple releases of the film by the same title posthumously released using the same footage, plus associated documentaries and books. And I think a user has been a little overenthusiastic in creating micro-categories for characters and actors on the film(s), without a lot of regard for COM:OVERCAT, so I think there's issues with redundancies and category hierarchy. I've reached out to the user responsible for these subcategories a few times but they seem uninterested in cleaning them up. Adeletron 3030 (talk) 16:56, 12 April 2023 (UTC)

Editing page: uploading a picture

Hi, I am new to Wikipedia as I am a student working on an assignment. Sorry if this question has been asked or there is an easy fix.

In the sandbox, how would I go about uploading a screenshot of a tweet? What are the copyright rules on that? Please break it down step by step in detail Milliem92 (talk) 03:05, 13 April 2023 (UTC)

You should work out the details yourself, but you need to have the tweet on your screen, then use some operating system dependent way to get a screenshot (a rectangle, the relevant window or all screen to be cropped later). When you have the image you want, then upload. There should be an upload link in the main menu of most any page at Commons (for the Wikipedias, whether you are sent to their upload page or that of Commons varies). Copyrighted elements should be de minimis or removed. Also the tweet itself may be above the threshold of originality and thus in most cases copyrighted, needing permission from the author. Don't claim "own work" if the screenshot contents aren't authored by you. Use Category:Tweets in addition to possible categories related to the author or subject of the tweet (there is a categories field in the upload wizard). –LPfi (talk) 07:04, 13 April 2023 (UTC)
How does one determine the threshold of originality for a tweet? Trade (talk) 12:47, 13 April 2023 (UTC)
Threshold of originality differs by country. I suggest you read the page in the link in LPfi's remark, and then if you have a more specific question come back here with that. - Jmabel ! talk 16:48, 13 April 2023 (UTC)
Also, keep in mind: if you want to cite something that is already online, there is absolutely no need to make a copy of it, just cite the relevant page/URL (in this case on Twitter). - Jmabel ! talk 16:50, 13 April 2023 (UTC)

Thanks T21113103 (talk) 13:20, 13 April 2023 (UTC)

  • @T21113103: it seems extremely unlikely that someone has properly cleared rights for all of the photos used in making those up, so probably not. My guess is that it is basically one big copyright violation.
Just to be clear: the text in the PDF is no problem in this respect, but usually documents like that don't belong on Commons. - Jmabel ! talk 17:02, 13 April 2023 (UTC)
In the future: if you want to upload something that doesn't have a copyright issue of its own, there are basically two ways for the author (or other copyright holder) to communicate the license:
  • On a site or page clearly under their own control, they can indicate the free license they are offering.
  • They (not you) can go through the process outlined at COM:VRT.
In short, we need a verifiable way to know that the copyright-holder has granted a particular license. Jmabel ! talk 16:56, 13 April 2023 (UTC)

Chippendales story

Chippendales used to have a rich and informative history of the club and its founders. Unfortunately it has been reduced to bare bones "Just the facts, ma'am" paragraphs and most of the detailed info deleted. There is so much disinformation about Chippendales and Wikipedia's severely truncated patch-up just exacerbates the problem. Not sure who did it but someone with an agenda took to it with an axe. Sad and unfortunate. 75.84.142.66 17:45, 13 April 2023 (UTC)

That may be so, but policies and practice in Wikipedia in English (which I assume you are talking about) has little to do with this site, Wikimedia Commons. If some free images were deleted in the process, then somebody here may want to rescue those. –LPfi (talk) 18:11, 13 April 2023 (UTC)

Given that your upload is less than 7 days old and not in use, we can do a courtesy deletion (which I'll do). There are a few "normal" ways to ask for this; one is to put on the page in question. After 7 days, though, we don't let people do this, because when you upload here you are granting an irrevocable license, and we don't want to leave a third party unable to prove that you had done so. - Jmabel ! talk 23:01, 13 April 2023 (UTC)

Hello, I am adding pictures of my property listed on the National Register of Historic Places. How long do they take to be posted? How many pictures can I add? Let me know. Thanks. Lauro Garcia Garcialaruu (talk) 16:10, 14 April 2023 (UTC)

  • @Garcialaruu: No limit on how many photos you can add (other than that you should not upload shots that are essentially duplicates). Not sure what you mean by "posted": what you upload is immediately available on Commons. - Jmabel ! talk 18:13, 14 April 2023 (UTC)

Uploading files from YouTube screenshots

Hello, sorry if I'm still a beginner and my bad grammar but I want to ask about uploading files from YouTube screenshots. I saw other files uploaded without problems being deleted because the copyright and source (URL) are listed and even the minutes are also written (Ex. File:Lightsum 210618.png, File:PIXY 픽시 220708.png, File:YOUNITE 2200413.png, etc), just like I do. I've previously had notifications like this before 'cause I still don't understand so I learn and corrected my mistake. However, why did all my files that I even uploaded a long time ago, suddenly today have to be deleted now by another user while before there was no problem at all?? Is there something wrong? Because this time I didn't get a clear reason for that problem, unlike before when someone gave me a specific reason so I understood where I was wrong. Please, maybe someone can take a look again at the files that I uploaded and give me some direction. Thank you so much! Ahptune (talk) 16:04, 14 April 2023 (UTC)

The nice thing is that YouTube allows you to upload videos that have a Creative Commons license that is compatible with our requirements. If you do any search at YouTube, you can filter those by "Creative Commons". If you take screenshots of videos licensed like that, you can use CC YouTube to show that the screenshots are appropriately licensed. If you take screenshots of videos that are not Creative Commons licensed, they will be deleted from Commons. —Justin (koavf)TCM 17:13, 14 April 2023 (UTC)

  • (via Google translate) @Кобеля Мар'яна Ярославівна: this is Wikimedia Commons, not Wikipedia, so it would be sheer coincidence if anyone here can answer your question beyond saying that writing about yourself is usually considered a conflict of interest on Wikipedia, and usually results in deletion. - Jmabel ! talk 21:02, 15 April 2023 (UTC)

Trying to upload photo to my mothers page - Ruby Jewell Timms Price

Have you tried uploading the file on Commons normally, not through some en.wikipedia thing? -- Asclepias (talk) 18:06, 12 April 2023 (UTC)
It seems the resolution of the file you are trying to upload is quite low. If you have the original, upload a version with full resolution. But I suspect you may have a copyright problem: you have a copy of the image, but are you the photographer? If not, you need to confirm that the copyright got transferred to you or that the rights owner allows licensing the photo as cc-by-sa-4.0 (or some other free licence of their choosing), and you shouldn't claim own work. –LPfi (talk) 06:41, 13 April 2023 (UTC)
@Marqueax: Hi, and welcome. I am sorry to inform you that you have triggered Special:AbuseFilter/153 by trying to cross-wiki upload smaller (<50,000 bytes or <2,000,000 pixels) jpg photos as a new user. Each jpg photo you tried to upload is smaller, and you indicated it's your own work. Usually when someone uploads smaller photos, they are copyright violations taken from the web. If you took the photos yourself, please upload the full-size originals of them per COM:HR, including EXIF metadata. If you did not take the photos, please see Commons:Licensing for why we can't accept them, and have the photographer(s) license them on their official websites or social media or send the photos and permissions via VRT with carbon copies to you. If you can't get a compliant license, the photos may still be uploaded to English Wikipedia in compliance with en:WP:F because we don't allow Fair Use here. If you use our Upload Wizard instead, you should be able to avoid that filter.   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 10:28, 16 April 2023 (UTC)

Using a legitimate alternative account for Flickr uploads on the Commons?

The following is abridged from Talk:Sockpuppetry on ENWiki, posted 12/1/2023. At this point in time, I'm now actively using an alt by the name of User:Hullian111-Flickr2Commons; I've since been advised to ask this question again here.

Having read through the w:Wikipedia:Sockpuppetry article a few times now and having examined whether a similar policy exists on the Commons itself, I was wondering whether the 'Legitimate Account' rationale could fall under starting up an alternative Commons account for the sole purpose of uploading another user's images from Flickr, so as to not clog up my own uploads with those? Or would doing this over the past few months be considered a form of (non-malicious?) sockpuppetry? Hullian111 (talk) 20:05, 15 April 2023 (UTC)

  • It's fine, given that the user pages of that account and your regular account link to each other. I imagine you already know to keep the alt account to its single purpose, since mixing it up can really confuse matters. - Jmabel ! talk 20:59, 15 April 2023 (UTC)
Admittedly, I do use the alt to handle categories related to what I'm uploading (i.e. new 'Preserved bus in the UK' and 'April 2023 in [CITY/REGION]' cats), but besides those, the account sticks to its purpose. It helps I do the uploading through private browsing so I don't have to relogin to everything every time I use the account. Hullian111 (talk) 22:56, 15 April 2023 (UTC)
You can be logged in to both accounts: One in the web browser, the other in a private window of the web browser. C.Suthorn (@Life_is@no-pony.farm) (talk) 08:22, 16 April 2023 (UTC)

Public Domain Image

I wish to use the image shown on the page https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Julius_LeBlanc_Stewart_-_The_Ball.jpg#filehistory (Painting "The Ball" - 19th cen.) on the cover of a CD Album, that will have perhaps 1,000 copies. My understanding is that both the original painting and the photographic image, being an unaltered reproduction, are in the public domain and can be used freely. But I have never dealt with this before, and I have difficulty understanding all the terminology, particularly regarding PD Tags. I can see no credit for the photographer. Can I simply use the image without any tag or accreditation? (I would credit the artist in the cover text.) Or must I add a tag, and what should that be? I am a novice at this and no lawyer (nor do I have one.) Any advice from those more knowledgeable is appreciated. MGLuthier (talk) 22:16, 15 April 2023 (UTC)

It is in the public domain. There is no legal requirement to credit the photographer/scanner of a PD image. The page you link credits Ulrich W. Hiesinger: Julius LeBlanc Stewart, American painter of the Belle Epoque, New York 1998. I'd give odds that Hiesinger is not the actual photographer who photographed the painting and that the book doesn't credit the actual photographer. I would give even stronger odds that the uploader scanned from the book, so we are two (uncopyrightable) removes from the painting itself. - Jmabel ! talk 01:44, 16 April 2023 (UTC)
@MGLuthier, if you expect to use it on enwiki (or permit others to use it there), attribution is mandatory per policy. Elizium23 (talk) 02:21, 16 April 2023 (UTC)
@Elizium23: maybe I'm confused, but: what policy precisely are you referring to, and how is it relevant? You linked a large and complex page. I can't readily find what on that page you are talking about, and suspect that remark is unrelated to the question that MGLuthier asked. MGLuthier said he was planning to print a CD with about 1000 copies, expressed his intent to credit the original artist, and was asking whether it was necessary to credit a photographer. Are you talking about the (unlikely) scenario where we would be using the cover of a MGLuthier's CD on Wikipedia? Or are you saying there would be a problem using that existing Commons file in Wikipedia (something MGLuthier didn't even ask about)? On the latter, I'm rather certain that the likelihood that Hiesinger's book does not credit the person who photographed the public-domain painting (or, if it does, the uploader failed to pass on that credit) presents no problem for using File:Julius LeBlanc Stewart - The Ball.jpg. In my experience, even museums rarely credit the individual who photographs a painting, nor is there any need to since that photograph creates no new intellectual property rights. But maybe I'm missing something… - Jmabel ! talk 03:50, 16 April 2023 (UTC)
I am saying that I didn't understand the OP, so I apologise for interposing myself in this discussion. Elizium23 (talk) 11:47, 16 April 2023 (UTC)
Or are you saying that File:Julius LeBlanc Stewart - The Ball.jpg might not really be in the public domain should not be here on Commons without proof of "early" publication? That might be a valid point; I suspect it would create a problem for an awful lot of works, though. - Jmabel ! talk 04:04, 16 April 2023 (UTC)
Thank you for your response. You led me to focus on the Hiesinger book, which is or was available from a number of sources. The National Gallery of Art describes it as the catalog of an exhibit, which supports the belief that it meets the criteria for "faithful reproductions of two-dimensional public domain works of art are public domain". The original 1885 painting is clearly public domain. As such, I am comfortable using it in my project. The painting is from a "private collection", which apparently could refer to the owner or the temporary collection made for the exhibit. These pages appropriately go into great technical detail regarding the on-line re-use of files from Wiki Commons—tags and accreditation, etc.—but not so much about taking them back out into the physical world of print publication. I suppose I will have to search for that elsewhere. MGLuthier (talk) 15:57, 16 April 2023 (UTC)

Unsplash

Could you please tell me if I can upload pictures from Unsplash and, if so, under what license? Here is their license: https://unsplash.com/license. On a related point, can anybody point me to a page with a list of admissible/not admissible websites for pictures? For example, I just found out that Pexels changed their licensing in 2018 and we can't use them anymore. I am not versed in licensing legalese to make head or tails of each website's wording and to translate that into a wiki-appropriate license tag. (see Pixabay, https://pixabay.com/service/license-summary/). I was hoping that more educated minds than mine might have put together such a very helpful list, i.e. website=Wiki-tag. Thank you, WikiUser70176 (talk) 12:02, 16 April 2023 (UTC)

@WikiUser70176: For Unsplash, see Template:Unsplash. Note the documentation and the cut date. For pixabay, see Template:Pixabay. Note the documentation and the cut date. In general, for popular websites, you can do a search which may lead to a specific template with instructions or to discussions. For lists of some websites, you can look at Commons:Free media resources/Photography and en:Wikipedia:Public domain image resources. -- Asclepias (talk) 13:07, 16 April 2023 (UTC)
Thank you very much! I appreciate it! It saves me so much time. WikiUser70176 (talk) 13:10, 16 April 2023 (UTC)
@WikiUser70176: Also, for Pexels there is Template:Pexels-Cc-zero.
It's probably a good idea when it is possible to upload the images from their original or early sources. Information may get lost or distorted through successive copies by different websites. The original or an early source has a better chance of having retained information. For example, for the image File:Brassica oleracea var. gongylodes (kohlrabi).jpg, uploaded from the website Rawpixel and dated from the date of the upload to Commons, Rawpixel gives as its source for this image the website Free-images, which in turn gives as its own source for this image the website Pixabay, which mentions that the image was published there on 4 February 2016 by the user walkersalmanac. I don't know if it means that the uploader is the photographer and that the publication date is the creation date, but mentioning the original source, the uploader and the publication date can probably be useful. Even if an image is public domain, it is useful to indicate the author and the date of creation if they can be found. -- Asclepias (talk) 16:16, 16 April 2023 (UTC)
Wow... I had no clue. I will dig more before uploading. Thanks again! Right now I've limited myself to Library of Congress, it seems more straight forward. WikiUser70176 (talk) 16:42, 16 April 2023 (UTC)

Upload

How do I upload a picture into the right category? Dunold41 (talk) 21:53, 16 April 2023 (UTC)

  • You don't exactly "upload" into a category. When you upload the picture, as far as I know all of our upload tools have a means to add any number of categories. Or if the picture is already on Commons, you can add a category by placing the name of the category in doubled square brackets near the bottom of the wikitext for the page; e.g. or . There are also some templates that have a side effect of adding categories, and there are some tools for doing mass categorization, but neither of those is likely to be what you are looking for at this point. You might want to read Commons:Categories. - Jmabel ! talk 00:12, 17 April 2023 (UTC)

I am unable to enter the creation date of a file

I am unable to enter the creation date of a file Peter Horn (talk) 00:01, 17 April 2023 (UTC)

@Jmabel: It is a file that I created on 2922 11 09 on my iphone. When attempting to enter the creation date on the Upload Wizard, the wizrad refused to capture the reation date when entered. Ditto for another file that I created on my iphone on 2022 12 04. Thus the uploads were aborted. Peter Horn (talk) 00:44, 17 April 2023 (UTC)
@Peter Horn: I don't use the Upload Wizard myself, so I can't speak to what form it needs the date (maybe someone else can help you out with that) but in any case, you can just upload with the current date and then edit to correct the file page immediately afterward. The latter date would be expressed in Wikitext as 2022-10-04; I can't tell you what the former would be because "2922 11 09" is not a valid date. - Jmabel ! talk 00:58, 17 April 2023 (UTC)
@Jmabel: Of course I meant 2022 11 09. Peter Horn (talk) 01:09, 17 April 2023 (UTC)
You will also need to be specific about your date format, Peter, because both of those dates are ambiguous.
YYYY-MM-DD they make sense, and were taken within thirty days of each other. YYYY-DD-MM they would be, respectively, September 11 and April 12, 2022. Wikimedia projects support several date formats, but Taken on only supports en:ISO 8601 format (YYYY-MM-DD), as Jmabel demonstrated. Elizium23 (talk) 03:49, 17 April 2023 (UTC)
@Elizium23: I tried with YYYY MM DD Peter Horn (talk) 15:20, 17 April 2023 (UTC)
I also need to rotate my images 90°. Peter Horn (talk) 15:30, 17 April 2023 (UTC)
In the wizard you normally select the date from a date-selection box. To enter a date manually you have to switch to the manual input field by pressing a button. Yes, derivative works from public domain works are public domain. Some exceptions could apply in very narrow circumstances, such as if a public domain video briefly features a copyrighted painting in the background and you crop an image that is just the painting, etc., but 99.9% of the time, you are just fine. —Justin (koavf)TCM 06:21, 17 April 2023 (UTC)

Paintings and letters from 19th century

I uploaded paintings and letters from a Finnish artist called Hilda Olson who died in 1915 to Wikimedia (not published before). Now all of them are in a category "Media without a license as of unknown date" and will be deleted in seven days. I was told that I could choose the option "some other reason that's not mentioned above" and fill in "PD-old-auto-unpublished" to the licencing part. When filling in the date for the original publication I probably made mistake and filled in the date when I put them online (yesterday). But when I tried to fix this on the "edit the file description page" (switching the "date="), nothing happens and the image stays in the category. I am also unsure how to fix this with the paintings that don't have a date (do I just fill in an estimate? Circa -something?) and letters that have been sent within certain time period (e.g. 1895-1912 and all of the letters in the same PDF document).

I'm new to Wikimedia Commons so I apologise for the very confusing question... Thank you in advance for any help you could provide. KaroKosk (talk) 09:05, 18 April 2023 (UTC)

Looks like the entry I filled in automatically opens up as a template... This is the entry I added (with an extra dot in the beginning so that you can see it): PD-old-auto-unpublished
Perhaps this is the core of the problem then? KaroKosk (talk) 09:19, 18 April 2023 (UTC)
@KaroKosk: We usually assume that old works were published at the time of creation. For an author who died more than 100 years ago, the correct license is PD-old-100-expired. Now if there is significant doubt that a work was never published, there may be a copyright issue, depending on the date of creation and country of origin. See COM:VPC#Copyright#Old artworks and "publication", a discussion which concerns exactly that situation. Yann (talk) 09:24, 18 April 2023 (UTC)
Alright, thanks a lot! I will read through the link you sent. One more question though: would the letters need a different licence then as they have not been published? It's been more than 100 years since they were sent and there is no sensitive information there. Perhaps the license I used earlier would work for these? And then I could use the license you sent for the paintings? KaroKosk (talk) 09:42, 18 April 2023 (UTC)
There is clearly a difference from a US perspective between art, which may have counted as published when exhibited, and private letters, which are less likely to have been published with consent of the copyright owner. In the latter case, current US law would be pretty clear that US copyright expires 70 years after the death of the author. As Finland also follows the 70 year pma term, there are no issues under Finnish law anyway. Should they turn out to have been previously published in Finland after all, then they would be PD in the US simply because they were PD in Finland in 1996.
So the only situations that would be troublesome is if they had been published in accordance with US formalities (copyright notice or registration) or first published in the US, and that between 1989 and 2003. I consider these both very unlikely for paintings and letters of a Finnish artist who died in 1915. Felix QW (talk) 14:54, 18 April 2023 (UTC)
I'd use 1915. - Jmabel ! talk 15:37, 18 April 2023 (UTC)
Did you get the letters from the person (or heirs) of who they were sent to? What is the provenance? If they are truly unpublished until now, they are public domain in the United States (author's lifetime plus 70 years). They would also no longer have an author's right in Europe (also 70pma term), so PD-old-auto-unpublished as you found would be the correct license. Technically, if published without permission from the author or whoever inherited their copyright, they remain technically unpublished, but that no longer matters once the 70pma has expired. In the EU, for unpublished works expired that way, the person to first publish them has a 25-year "publication right" which is very similar to copyright, and may need a license. The painting may need a different license. Presumably the paintings were published a long time ago... or were they from the artist's estate? "Publication" can be a tortured topic, and it likely only matters for the U.S. in this case (other than that publication right), so details of the provenance can help if they are known. I think it's unlikely the paintings would be considered unpublished in Europe though, unless they were truly kept private by the artist and the heirs for a long long time. But if they were published along with the letters, then the copyright term (and tag) would be the same. Carl Lindberg (talk) 16:00, 18 April 2023 (UTC)
@KaroKosk: The template PD-old-auto-unpublished requires a year in a parameter, otherwise it displays the unlicensed warning message. Please see the instructions in the documentation of the template. And for example this modification. -- Asclepias (talk) 16:04, 18 April 2023 (UTC)
@KaroKosk: In this specific case, as 1915+70 = 1985 < 1996, we don't need to care about the publishing. Just use PD-old-100-1996. The publishing part is for the USA, but works that were in the public domain in their source country in 1996 (the year varies, but in Finland it is 1996) are in the public domain also there. As the works were formerly unpublished and their copyright had expired, there is the separate publication right in the EU, which means that your licence is needed (for 25 years). Thus, also add a licence of your choosing, such as Cc-zero or , and tell somewhere in the file description that the works were previously unpublished. –LPfi (talk) 17:25, 18 april 2023
Oops, seems Carl Lindberg already did a better job at explaining most of this. –LPfi (talk) 18:43, 18 April 2023 (UTC)

Photo with unknown copyright question

Hi there. I'm writing a draft article of a public figure and found a photograph of the person that I would like to use for the article. I did not take the photograph, and I cannot find any attribution - though I would guess it was taken in the mid 2000's. The photograph did not appear in a reverse image search either. What is the policy regarding publishing a photo on Wikipedia with unknown copyright status? Ormeos (talk) 01:19, 19 April 2023 (UTC)

If you do not have evidence that the photo is free licensed, it does not belong here on Wikimedia Commons. (This is not Wikipedia; en:Wikipedia allows some "fair use" of copyrighted material under certain conditions; ask for more info there.) -- Infrogmation of New Orleans (talk) 01:25, 19 April 2023 (UTC)
Anonymous works are still eligible for copyright status under US law as explained in COM:HIRTLE. An anonymous photo taken in the mid 2000s would be automatically eligible for copyright protection for at least 95 years after first publication or 120 years after creation, whichever expires first. So, it's unlikely such a photo can be uploaded to Commons without knowing a lot more about its en:provenance per COM:PCP. Some local Wikipedia projects do allow copyrighted content to be uploaded as explained in COM:FAIR, but often there are many restrictions in place. English Wikipedia policy is, for example, much more restrictive than fair use and not knowing anything more about the provenance of the image might make it harder to justify uploading it to English Wikipedia as non-free content. -- Marchjuly (talk) 02:02, 19 April 2023 (UTC)
Any work nowadays gets a copyright on creation (with a few exceptions, such as governmental works in some jurisdictions), and this copyright typically lasts for at least 70 years, sometimes significantly longer. Thus, for any reasonably recent work (such as created since 1900), you need some specific rationale to be able to use it. For Wikimedia Commons, "fair use" does not count; usually the rationale here is a free licence, such as CC-BY-SA. If the copyright owner does not explicitly license the work and you don't find another specific reason it is allowed, then you may not upload it. –LPfi (talk) 08:30, 19 April 2023 (UTC)
@Ormeos: I think your best bet is to contact the person's estate and ask whether they have suitable photos taken by somebody in the family who might be willing to release them with a free licence. It is important to note that you need the permission of the photographer, who thus needs to be known. If the photographer does not want to upload the photos themself but is willing to license them, then you need to follow the instructions at Commons:VRT, i.e. have them email a specific release to the VRT volunteers. –LPfi (talk) 08:39, 19 April 2023 (UTC)

@Alexandrsashin: This is a copyrighted photo with no known free license. It does not belong on Commons. If people are using it, that's too bad, but you should only upload content that is either (1) in the public domain, (2) where the copyright-holder has offered a free license, or (3) where you are the copyright-holder and are offering a free license. - Jmabel ! talk 15:13, 19 April 2023 (UTC)

You may ask the copyright holder to grant a free license. Regards, --Wilhelm Zimmerling PAR (talk) 17:45, 19 April 2023 (UTC)
But it is very unlikely they will agree to that, and frankly I wouldn't waste the effort. Most of what is on the Internet is not eligible to be uploaded to Commons. - Jmabel ! talk 18:00, 19 April 2023 (UTC)

Convenience link: File:Amaan Panjwani in battle.jpg. - Jmabel ! talk 00:22, 20 April 2023 (UTC)
Well, this is really weird.
Thought 1: looks like that was taken in a public place in the U.S., so it's legal for someone to take such a photo and publish it. There's really no presumption of privacy under U.S. law in such circumstances.
Thought 2: The uploader name is the same as the name given as the subject of the photo. That would suggest that this is a self-portrait, presumably with a timer. If that's the case, you can hardly claim to have violated your own privacy.
Thought 3: But the content of en:User:AmaanPanjwani is pretty silly, and the user in question seems to have no other contributions (or at least no undeleted contributions) beyond his own user page. (Pinging @AmaanPanjwani)
I lean toward deleting this as in inappropriate personal photo. I'll give at least a few hours for anyone to say something to the contrary before I do so. Also, I will suggest on en-wiki that that user page be deleted. - Jmabel ! talk 00:22, 20 April 2023 (UTC)

Reproduction of image in a book

Dear Sir/Madam, I am the author of a book entitled Wales in World War 2 which is to be published by Y Lolfa in paper-back in the autumn of 2023 ( publisher address: Y Lolfa Cyf, Talybont, Ceredigion, Wales SY24 5HE, tel. 01970 832 304)). We would like to use the image uploaded by Andy Dingley of the Alan Williams turret in Builth Wells. So far as I can see on your website this has now been deleted (Archive/2021/07/25) and i can't find any email or other way of contracting him directly. The image would appear as a 'thumbnail'- sized image in an information box in the text with the heading 'Defending the Wye Bridge'. I am hoping that the image may be reproduced free of charge. Please advise on this and on the attribution you would like us to use. Here is further information you may need or wish to have. The 'product' is a printed book, the 'production run' 1000, 'the term' ten years and the 'territory' world wide, but single language (English). Y Lolfa is a small but well-renowned Welsh publisher with a limited budget for reprographics for the book. Yours faithfully,

Dr Quentin Deakin, 23 Corbett Avenue, Tywyn, Gwynedd LL36 0AH tel. 01654 711245 Quentin Deakin (talk) 11:50, 20 April 2023 (UTC)

@Quentin Deakin: Without a link (even to a deleted file, if that's the case), it's difficult to be sure what file you refer to, but a file name approching what you describe is File:Alan Williams turret, Builth Wells.jpeg. If you want to use that image, you can simply follow the instructions of its licence, which is CC BY-SA 3.0 (simplified). If you use the image in compliance with the terms of that licence, you do not need to contact the photographer. If you want to use the image without the licence terms, then you must contact the photographer. On the page of the file, you can click on the "talk" link beside his name (User talk:Andy Dingley) and leave a message on his talk page. -- Asclepias (talk) 12:27, 20 April 2023 (UTC)
Thank you for your help. Having read the licence, I think this covers reproduction in a book (properly attributed of course to licence reference and photographer) because of the the terms relating to "Reproduce" - "by any means without limitation". Am I correct in this interpretation? 2A00:23C7:C6BC:7B01:64EB:B8C3:255C:EC93 14:33, 20 April 2023 (UTC)
Yes. A proper attribution and a proper link to the licence (as appropriate to the medium) is what is needed. I assume Andy Dingley is happy to know about the use, but they don't seem to ask for any special measures. –LPfi (talk) 16:41, 20 April 2023 (UTC)
(One caveat is that if the book is distributed digitally, no "effective technological measures" may be used to hinder readers from using their rights granted by the licence.) –LPfi (talk) 16:50, 20 April 2023 (UTC)
Thanks for this. Useful to know. 2A00:23C7:C6BC:7B01:2011:8231:A3CE:154 10:07, 21 April 2023 (UTC)
  • Hi Quentin, welcome to Commons.
There are two core principles here at Commons, which make this as easy as we can:
  • If it's on Commons, you can use it. For anything.
  • You don't even need to ask permission, or to notify the creator. (Thanks for doing this, but it's not necessary)
When someone uploads to Commons, they need to give the content a "free licence" (which covers the first point) and also they need to do this as a pro forma, by licensing it at the time of upload, not needing the re-user to get in touch afterwards when they want to use it (second point).
The ony thing you do need to do (because of the -by- part of this licence) is that you have to acknowledge the author. In a case like this, a table in the back of your book listing the images and "p23, Alan Williams turret, CC-by-sa by Andy Dingley @ Wikimedia Commons" is plenty. COM:REUSE is probably worth a read, as is the Creative Commons website.
Good luck with the book. Andy Dingley (talk) 19:47, 20 April 2023 (UTC)
Thanks Andy. That is really clear and useful. 2A00:23C7:C6BC:7B01:2011:8231:A3CE:154 10:05, 21 April 2023 (UTC)

The code for public domain?

Hi! What is the code for public domain? Help with placement of flag icon

Dear people, I've been developing a template for discussion. It will probably end up with substantially upgraded content, as the current one is well out of date. I want to mock up the potential appearance in a draft rather than have it in plain text – it will be easier for everyone to envisage that way, especially as I will need to compare it with other (existing) templates. I have put a draft in my Commons User page. My problem: I can't configure it so that the Australian flag is placed in an equivalent way to the CC0 symbol on the left-hand side of the panel, i.e. with space above and below it. Can anyone help, please? SCHolar44 (talk) 13:14, 26 April 2023 (UTC)

Are you trying to recreate PD-AustraliaGov? Polda18 D C 13:27, 26 April 2023 (UTC)
My bad, it says "non-government", I somehow missed "non" in front of it. So basically you are extending PD-Australia with a specific clausule "A" from the list. I think you should take a look at the layout code (the /layout subpage) to see how it is done. Don't forget that the templates have to be multilingual, and most templates use the Autotranslate template, which displays the template in language viewer has their interface in (fallback defaults to English). Polda18 D C 13:32, 26 April 2023 (UTC)
Thank you for commenting, Polda18. No, I wasn't trying to recreate PD-AustraliaGov when I posted the question – I had only wanted to create a mockup, for the purposes of discussion only, which after discussion could have been re-coded as a template.
Following your alerting me to the existence of the /layout subpage), I've come to understand a couple of previous mysteries and realised it's better to use that formatting rather than a customised mockup. I'm delighted it all works.  :-) Many thanks for your help! Cheers, Simon – SCHolar44 🇦🇺 💬 at 13:07, 27 April 2023 (UTC)

Uploading schematics using old browser

Hi!

I seam not to be able to upload any pictures nowadays.

The fantastic upload wizard was changed to a more simple one suddenly and even though I click that it's my own work it doesn't work.

If this doesn't change I will quit writing in Wikibooks and Wikipedia (and write in Word97 instead)

I mean no harm!

Here is an example: https://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/CPU_Design#First_motherboard

Knoppson (talk) 17:43, 18 April 2023 (UTC)

Classic upload form still exists as alternative. --Geohakkeri (talk) 17:58, 18 April 2023 (UTC)
No it doesn't, I use Firefox 32 and will never change. Knoppson (talk) 17:02, 19 April 2023 (UTC)
What do you mean – what doesn’t exist? --Geohakkeri (talk) 13:42, 20 April 2023 (UTC)
The wizards differs with regard to how fresh your browser is so if your browser is fresh you see the nice wizard you are talking about (and I have used before) but if your browser is old you see a more simple one (which I actually like). Therefore I can't even link you to my "problem". I have come to the conclusion that I now only need the code for public domain then all is fine. Knoppson (talk) 18:26, 20 April 2023 (UTC)
@Knoppson: Files will not display if you don't write their exact filenames. For example File:W coolrunner.PNG will not display as "File:w coorunner" (missing a letter and missing extension). File:W spartan.PNG will not display as "File:w spartan.png" (extension case). -- Asclepias (talk) 18:37, 18 April 2023 (UTC)
Thanks for your help! One issue still remains, it seems like my primitive (but easy-to-use) uploader forgets my setting of "my own work" which means that they still are subject for deletion, right? Furthermore, I got some bot talking to me that no license is specified. Please make it more simple to change such things because when I clicked on the links it was all bureaucratic. I just want to write books! Knoppson (talk) 17:00, 19 April 2023 (UTC)

Update image (upload newer version of the same file)

Hi, I’m not sure if this question has been asked, but how can I upload a new version of an image in a file (without delete or create new file). I couldn’t figure that out. Daeva Trạc (talk) 13:55, 19 April 2023 (UTC)

Check 'File History' at near the bottom of your file's page, should see an option which says 'Upload a new version of this file', for example for mine on Stockholm county population pyramid by origin. After clicking on it, upload your file by 'Source filename' and then detail the changes to the file by 'File changes' (under File description). Then click upload at the bottom! Tweedle (talk) 14:08, 19 April 2023 (UTC)
@Daeva Trạc and Tweedledumb2: but in most circumstances you want to upload a new version of a file under a distinct name, rather than overwrite an existing file. Daeva Trạc, could you be more specific about what you are trying to do (what file, what sort of change)? - Jmabel ! talk 15:16, 19 April 2023 (UTC)
Thanks for replying @Tweedledumb2 and @Jmabel. Nothing really serious, I saw some pictures that are kinda hard to see and thinking about updating them. Daeva Trạc (talk) 19:32, 19 April 2023 (UTC)
@Daeva Trạc: I still don't get what you mean about "updating", and you still haven't really been any more specific. Normally, "updating" would mean that something in the picture is outdated, but the rest of what you are saying here sounds like something else. Do read COM:OVERWRITE, though. - Jmabel ! talk 19:43, 19 April 2023 (UTC)

Sports Players

Can photos of sports players playing during official games be uploaded without taking the photo or knowing the owner of the photo Clarification Maker (talk) 07:19, 20 April 2023 (UTC)

It depends on the license. See COM:L and COM:CRT. Polda18 D C 07:30, 20 April 2023 (UTC)
@Clarification Maker: There is nothing in the games being "official" that would void the copyright. The organiser or some teams may license some photos for others to use, but usually only as "free for the press" or the like, not allowing use in other contexts, which is needed for Commons. –LPfi (talk) 16:32, 20 April 2023 (UTC)
@Clarification Maker: The short answer is "no". There would be an exception if the image is free-licensed, but that would be rare. - Jmabel ! talk 17:58, 20 April 2023 (UTC)

Confusion about what I can and cannot use on a wiki page

I created a wiki page about a Discord Bot of my own creation. It may not be that notable, but I wanted my friends and other users to be able to see its history and document its functions. There is no link anywhere where someone can access the bot, its code, or see more about its functions. There is no advertisement on it, just classic documentation like any other wiki. The entire page and all of its contents have been marked for deletion or actually deleted, despite it seemingly following the rules to the best of my ability. Any personal files uploaded are images used solely to educate, and so is the nature of the wiki page itself. Is it just because I created the Bot the page references? Please help if you can, and try to be patient with me. Thank you. RealBotBot (talk) 04:05, 21 April 2023 (UTC)

Wikimedia Commons is like a big photo album for hosting appropriately licensed image and media files for people around the world to use; since it's not an encyclopedia per se like the various local language Wikipedias, it's not within Wikimedia Commons' scope to host encyclopedic articles. So, If you would like to create an article about the doll, you will need to do so on one of the local Wikipedias (e.g. English Wikipedia, Spanish Wikipedia, French Wikipedia). Please be advised though that these local Wikipedias have their own policies and guidelines about the content they host. Hello, Can you help me with the changing of the copyright, It has no confirmed copyright status as the creator is dead most likely and I want to change it to Creative Commons, Please help.

--NumbaNumba (talk) 02:16, 12 April 2023 (UTC)

    • The 1900 one from a publication is fine. We didn't copy any of the drawing from that anyways. However, all the individual parts are modern drawings and can have a modern copyright. Many of those look familiar so could well have been taken from free Wikipedia drawings, but they would need to be credited if any are licensed CC-BY (or CC-BY-SA) instead of public domain. I don't think we can guess at a license for the reddit image unless we know the sources for all the bits. Which would be a large pain to do, most assuredly. Might be easier to upload the actual 1900 image. Carl Lindberg (talk) 18:40, 12 April 2023 (UTC)
The source I got it from had no name since the Reddit account (where the modern drawing was found) was deleted. This is something that is extremely trickly to figure out, we will just have to wait (or a alternate idea is that I upload both the original and reconstruction of the image). i want to write some one's biography on wikipedia so how can i write ?? PRANAVSHARMAAAA (talk) 12:17, 22 April 2023 (UTC)

@PRANAVSHARMAAAA: There are a number of different Wikipedias in various languages. If your question is about creating articles on English Wikipedia, you can try asking for help at en:Wikipedia:Help Desk or en:Wikipedia:Teahouse (just ask at one of the two, not both). You might also want to read en:Wikipedia:What Wikipedia is not and en:Wikipedia:The answer to life, the universe, and everything for some general information. If you want to create an article on another language Wikipedia, then there are probably similar help pages for that Wikipedia where you can ask questions. -- Marchjuly (talk) 12:59, 22 April 2023 (UTC)

Question about uploading images from a team's website

So I want to update the infobox images for the following people: Thomas Tuchel and Zsolt Low. They are both soccer coaches at Bayern Munich, however both of their infobox images are from when they coached PSG, which was over 3 years ago. The problem is I have two very good photos of them from this gallery, but I was unable to find any sort of license or copyright information about them (although I assume that Bayern owns the copyright ofc). The problem with this is that one of the images on Tuchel's wikipedia page (and it's on WC too) was also pulled straight from a team's website, in this case this gallery, which similarly does not contain any copyright information on site. However, the user was somehow able to obtain a CC 3.0 license for that image, which he/she did by apparently emailing the club? I would just like to know if I can use the pictures I found (and if so/not where the license is located), or to upload more from maybe Chelsea. ObsidianRS (talk) 23:49, 22 April 2023 (UTC)

The template FC-Zenit.ru is a confirmed license that permits the use of the photos from that website. But you cannot use photos from a website that doesn't have a free licence. -- Asclepias (talk) 03:00, 23 April 2023 (UTC)
How do you know that FC Zenit is a confirmed license, and how did it become this? ObsidianRS (talk) 07:13, 23 April 2023 (UTC)
The box at the bottom of the template refers to what is known as a "VRT ticket", which, as can be checked in the history, was placed in the template by a member of the Wikimedia "Volunteer Response Team", a small team of trusted Wikimedia users tasked with managing such matters. For more details, please see the page Commons:VRT. The reference to the ticket number means that a VRT member verified that the owner of the copyrights confirmed explicitly the license, usually though email the copyright owner sent to Wikimedia. That mail between the copyright owner and Wikimedia constitutes the "VRT ticket", kept in the VRT archives for reference. The initiative depends on each case. In some cases, it may be the copyright owner who takes the initiative to issue a free license. Or it may be a Commons user who takes the initiative to contact the copyright owner and suggests the idea of a free license for one or several photos. Such requests by users should be carefully worded, to prevent misunderstandings. The page Commons:VRT provides some guidance. Official websites of sports clubs are probably less likely to issue free licenses. But you can try. Chances may be better with websites of independent photographers. -- Asclepias (talk) 13:24, 23 April 2023 (UTC)

Twitter Images

If we ask for permission from a Twitter account that took their own images of NBA players and they grant us permission, can we use them on Wikipedia? I am looking to fill out some NBA players with no images. Goldenshoppingbag (talk) 02:39, 23 April 2023 (UTC)

@Goldenshoppingbag: Speaking for Commons here, not Wikipedia (you don't say which Wikipedia; there are about 200 in different languages, and each has rules of its own), if they grant a specific free license that is acceptable for Commons, sure. Assuming it is clear that they are the photographer, they could do that either:
  1. with a publicly visible tweet (e.g. on the thread where they posted the photo in question) indicating that they offer this license. That can then be cited in the "Permission" field of Information when uploading.
    • If some other site/page is clearly under their control and they'd rather post the photo & permission there rather than Twitter, that's fine, too.
  2. by going through the COM:VRT process.
Jmabel ! talk 03:28, 23 April 2023 (UTC)
Sorry, I will specify it is for English version of Wikipedia. Thank you for your response Goldenshoppingbag (talk) 04:38, 23 April 2023 (UTC)
If you get the free licence, then you can upload it here on Commons to be available for all Wikipedias (and other projects). If you upload it on a Wikipedia, it can be used only there, and you must follow their specific rules. On Wikipedia in English it might be that they don't allow photos of living people (as they'd prefer you to take your own photo and license that instead). Some Wikipedias have no local uploads at all. –LPfi (talk) 11:05, 23 April 2023 (UTC)
@LPfi and Goldenshoppingbag: if it's licensed, en-wiki is glad to have it, whether it's your own photo or that of a third party. What they won't accept is any "fair use" photo of a living person. But if it's licensed, I'd strongly recommend uploading to Commons (to make it available to all Wikipedias, etc.). - Jmabel ! talk 15:41, 23 April 2023 (UTC)

Unable to upload any images

Hello, today I tried uploading 4 images depicting train stations on the Czech train track number 290, however I am unable to upload them in any way. All the images are under 5 MB and are in the .jpg file format (I have the same issue with .png format) and with dimensions 4928x3264. Uploading them through the upload wizard lags my entire browser and eventually my whole computer and I need to restart it, I've tried using Firefox without any addons (through incognito mode) and Microsoft Edge and I have the same issue, where the RAM usage slowly increases to 99 % and then my whole computer BSoDs. I've also tried using the mobile app to upload the images however that always fails at the end when I press the upload button and the image does not get uploaded. The last method I tried was using VicunaUpload however it "lags" and shows that the files were uploaded successfully but they were not uploaded. The images shouldn't be any issue as I was able to upload them to my Wordpress site for testing (without compression) and through Discord (with compression), uploading the compressed version doesn't help either. Countries of Europe

Hi, So I want to add Countries of Europe ("") to all Category:Plaxton Pointer (step entrance) vehicles that are in different countries,

I've added "" to Category:Plaxton Pointer (step entrance) on Dennis Dart buses in China however on the China page the UK doesn't show,

Would anyone know how I'm supposed to get all countries showing ? (the countries would only show once this template has been added to the country page if that makes sense - I did mistakenly add "Countries of Europe" to the China page however it then only showed the UK on both China and UK models, I've changed this to "Countries of Asia" but the UK isn't showing, Thanks, –Davey2010Talk 13:11, 23 April 2023 (UTC)

It makes sense that the UK link shows in the countries of Europe template and the China link shows in the countries of Asia template . I suppose that both templates must be used on a page to show links for those two countries. -- Asclepias (talk) 16:34, 23 April 2023 (UTC)
An editor has been adding these to various bus model categories so I assumed this was now a thing ... apparently not. @Knoppson: In addition: to find the right category, find a Wikipedia page that best covers your image. If there is a link to Commons, look in the Commons category. There may be a subcategory more suitable for your image. If there is no link to Commons, look for pictures on the WP page. If there are, check them out as they may have a Commons category. Wikimedia has a wrong photo of my parents

I would like to upload the right photo of my Parents namely Vaea_Tuputupu. The current photo you have on this site is the wrong one. thanks Vaeacass (talk) 03:09, 24 April 2023 (UTC)

@Vaeacass: I presume you mean File:Vaea Tuputupu.jpg, and that your upload is File:Baron Vaea and Baroness Tuputupu Ma'afu Vaea.jpg. A few questions/remarks:
  • I have reverted your edit to the caption of File:Vaea Tuputupu.jpg. The caption is absolutely not the place to request a deletion. If you wish to nominate it for deletion, you need to use the process at Commons:Deletion requests. I realize that you are probably new enough here that you didn't know that the way you did this was against the rules, but if you do that again now that I have told you, it will be considered vandalism.
  • When you say that File:Vaea Tuputupu.jpg is "wrong", do you mean it is not them or do you mean you do not like the picture being used?
  • Clearly the date 24 April 2023 cannot be correct for the photo you just uploaded. When does it actually date from?
  • You describe it as "own work". Does that mean you were the photographer? If you were not the photographer, then who was?
  • All uses of File:Vaea Tuputupu.jpg are on to-wiki. You'd have to take up any issue of replacing the photo in those articles on to-wiki, not here on Commons.
  • For File:Baron Vaea and Baroness Tuputupu Ma'afu Vaea.jpg: why the large black borders at top and bottom?

Hello Commons Help desk, I have uploaded Convent of Jesus and Mary school, Shimla, India, school crest which I took from the school website. I only edited the background in red color ( the school color). I also had emailed the school (April 17th, 2023) if I could use the school crest/logo in the infobox for an article. There is no reply yet. Under free use if this is still not allowed, please do delete this image file. I have used it for my article: Convent of Jesus and Mary, Shimla, India, in the infobox only. Sorry for the inconvenience if this is not allowed. Thank you very much.

--Setwikirec0 (talk) 03:47, 20 April 2023 (UTC)

Correct steps are informing the school about the COM:VRT process. Ask the school if they are willing to release the logo under a free license, and to send an email to VRT with carbon copy for them. Once the school confirms the license, then it can stay. If they deny, the logo needs to be deleted, you may then upload a minimal resolution to Wikipedia under Fair Use. Be sure to provide a sufficient Fair Use rationale. Also, by minimal resolution I mean the image is uploaded in smallest resolution needed to recognize the subject. Anything beyond may be viewed as copyright infringement. Next thing: if the school agrees with the free licensing, then it may be good idea to vectorize the logo (convert the bitmap PNG format into vector SVG format). That could be done yourself, or you can ask someone to do it for you. The logo seems simple enough to detect contours by algorithm and generating vector mesh for it. Hi Polda18,
Thank you very much for your reply and explanation!
My Best to you!
Setwikirec0 (talk) 17:41, 21 April 2023 (UTC)
Hello @Setwikirec0: The image on the school website looks like it may be a simple reproduction of an image that could be old enough to be in the public domain, out of copyright. If you can find information showing that that design of the crest was already used before circa 1936, then that design, and your modified version, are probably good for Commons. If you can't find information about the early publication of the image, then the school image can probably be uploaded directly to the English-language Wikipedia according to the policy of that Wikipedia about the use of non-free images, but not to Commons. In that case, however, you should probably use an unmodified version. In any case, a permission from the school that would be restricted to "use the logo in the infobox of an article" would not be useful, because a limited permission is not the type of permission required on Wikimedia. -- Asclepias (talk) 13:08, 20 April 2023 (UTC)

ISIS kids app screenshot

I was going to upload a screen shot from the Islamic State kids app "Huroof", and wanted to know if that would still be considered copyrighted work, or if I have to upload that onto just regular English Wikipedia. RowanJ LP2 (talk) 02:35, 23 April 2023 (UTC)

@RowanJ LP2: what is your theory as to why it would be in the public domain? - Jmabel ! talk 03:21, 23 April 2023 (UTC)
I don't really have any idea why it would be in PD, but I don't have an idea why it wouldn't be, that's the reason why I'm here. RowanJ LP2 (talk) 04:26, 23 April 2023 (UTC)
Most countries give an automatic copyright to any created artistic work, including photographs and user interfaces, for 70 years (for anonymous works) or 70 years past the death of the author. In some cases, the photo or interface is too simple to be awarded a copyright (no creativity involved), but otherwise you need some specific rationale according to the specific jurisdiction. In the case of ISS, you could argue that its country of origin doesn't have a copyright relation with the USA, but then you kind of need to recognise the ISS. I think uploading to English Wikipedia is your best bet. –LPfi (talk) 10:59, 23 April 2023 (UTC)
I think the question is whether or not copyright legislation still applies to illegal organizations
I presume it does unless someone can argue otherwise Trade (talk) 15:05, 24 April 2023 (UTC)
I am not sure how "illegal organization" is supposed to be defined, but ISIS is more than a ragtag band of outlaws, they are an unrecognized state/jurisdiction.
Copyright can be held personally by a human being, or collectively by a company or org. Even if you could argue that ISIS has no right to copyright works, its members would have that right (I am not aware of any legal structure or framework which could revoke a human being's right to copyright) and so the answer is yes, it is absolutely under copyright.
enwiki's Fair Use Rationale may permit use of such a screenshot, although I tend to think that project editors try to err on the side of caution when an action could be seen as promoting or giving legitimacy to criminal enterprise. Elizium23 (talk) 15:22, 24 April 2023 (UTC)
@LPfi, this leads to interesting thought experiments regarding unrecognized states. If a subject, citizen, or member of government in a sovereign state such as en:Republic of Artsakh or en:Sovereign Military Order of Malta copyrights a work, what country is that copyrighted in? Whose laws apply to that copyright if a state is so insignificant that it hardly has laws at all? Is there not some default copyright? Would copyright be held by the most appropriate, recognized sovereign state whose borders apply? Does SMOM copyright defer to Malta? Elizium23 (talk) 15:29, 24 April 2023 (UTC)
How would Commons even determine who in IS is the copyright holder? Or can we just get permission by asking some someone on Twitter who joined them? Trade (talk) 16:11, 24 April 2023 (UTC)
One could argue different ways. For a court to dismiss a case because they don't have mandate to handle IS cases they need to recognise the IS. I don't know any country that has done that. You could argue that a criminal gang has forfait their rights by being criminal, but then you need a specific section of law saying so – and I think that is rare across jurisdictions. A person or organisation suing you needs to be able to demonstrate that they own the copyright according to the laws in the jurisdiction where they sue. The country does not need to have copyright relations to the IS: criminal group having control over the area of origin does not change whether there are copyright relations to the country where that area is located. Compare areas regarded as no-go for the police (think Colombia or São Paolo). The only thing about IS that I see as relevant is whether the copyright can be seen to have been transferred to the IS (or to some part of it). Over here that would require them to be recognised as a legal person (i.e. a legally well-defined entity with specific rights). –LPfi (talk) 16:35, 25 April 2023 (UTC)

Incorrect Photo of Don Diego de la Viña

Hi good day...I believe the portrait posted here for Don Diego da la Viña is incorrect. This is the portrait of my great2x grand father Mateo Serion who was the son in-law and personal chef cook of the family of the de la Viñas. Mateo Serion was the husband of Maria Dolores de la Viña - Serion, daughter of Don Diego de la Viña.. Please change the image. Many thanks for this page.

Using a picture from an article of the open science journal scientific reports

Hi, I want to use the picture (Figure 6) from the article doi.org/10.1038/s41598-017-10702-6 – "Unveiling CO2 heterogeneous freezing plumes during champagne cork popping" – of the open science journal scientific reports in an article of the german wikipedia. Is it possible to transfer a copy of that picture in "commons.wikipedia". The article itself is published under the license "creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/". I do not have the expertise about the licenses and what is allowed. Thank you for your help. ArchibaldWagner (talk) 06:44, 25 April 2023 (UTC)

Recording who IDed photo

Hello, Is there a field to record who identified people/places in a photo? For instance, I have photos over 100 years old. People/places in the photos can be identified by a person who knew these people and places. I would like to name that person who identified a particular person in the photo and give their relationship to that person, e.g, 'identified by Jane Doe who was the daughter of the [named person] in the photo.' This would give a measure of legitimacy to the identification. Thank you. Eurotraveler (talk) 11:02, 25 April 2023 (UTC)

@Eurotraveler: If it is important and if it doesn't look too intrusive in the context, I suppose it could be mentioned in the description field. Or you can write the comment in the discussion page of the file. -- Asclepias (talk) 11:40, 25 April 2023 (UTC)

Categories and the use of the vertical bar and special characters

I see many categories added on pages that have a vertical bar and space or asterisk or exclamation point or plus sign added on after the category name to change the sorting order on the parent category page, but they seem to be used differently for different categories by different users. Is there a policy or guideline that recommends how these special characters should be used to change the sorting order. I haven't been able to find anything. Thanks. Nv8200p (talk) 21:35, 25 April 2023 (UTC)

I've never seen one, and a guideline would be useful.
My advice:
  1. Make any changes in order to improve the ordering of the resultant category, for the convenience of our readers and browsers. If in doubt, see 1.
  2. (Simple cases) The search order should be based on something significant and distinctive within that category. There are many sub-aspects within this: Western personal names sort by "<surname>, <given name>, <any toponym prefix>".
Common prefixes are suppressed, especially when many of that category would share the same. So HMS Wombat would be in .
'Prefixes to be suppressed' also includes overlapping and near-overlapping phrases with the category name, so that Category:Photographs by Bert Verhoeff at Het Loo Palace‎ in Category:Photographs by Bert Verhoeff is sorted as 'Het Loo Palace' (note that 'at' also disappears).
  3. Entries in a category can be grouped into two lists, by prefixing those for the first list with a single space. This can be used to split "members" of the category (conventionally sorted) into the later list and any "meta-members" into the first, prefix, list. So Category:Ships of the United Kingdom could contain Category:Stanley Park (ship, 2008) simply; Category:Museum ships of the United Kingdom (not a 'member' of the category's content group, but a sub-division within it) would be within this but in the initial set, so with a single space prefix.
  4. Other prefixes are sometimes used: Category:Ships of the United Kingdom uses '+' for the constituent countries of the UK and also uses '*' for some other, unclear reason. As this is non-standard and not self-evident, I don't use it myself.
  5. Prefixes in the sort order are prefixes, not a sort order of themselves. So they're added as a prefix and the main sort term is still used after them.
Andy Dingley (talk) 23:13, 25 April 2023 (UTC)
I agree with everything Andy just said, and would also emphasize: there is no deep reason for these to work the same across categories, unless they are very similar categories. I would also add, for some categories chronological order makes a lot of sense and file names may not accomplish that on their own (e.g. issues of a magazine, and pages sequenced within the issue; a series of construction photos for a building, though in that latter case I might suggest a gallery page rather than doing it with a cat sort). - Jmabel ! talk 23:22, 25 April 2023 (UTC)

Trying to improve a picture

I have edited the following photo, revealing many obscured details.

i do not know how to replace the picture with my improved edit.

File:Theodore Dwight Weld.jpg Deisenbe (talk) 12:24, 26 April 2023 (UTC)

Scroll down to the file history and click on the Upload new version of this file link. Please keep in mind that this is only done for minor edits, like color correction, slight crop, etc. (stuff that doesn't change the subject of the photo). If you make a derivative work (extended edits, cropping a person out of a group, etc.), that file needs to be uploaded as a new file instead. Polda18 D C 12:53, 26 April 2023 (UTC)
It should also be stated that colorization of a black and white photo is considered as extensive edit and therefore derivative work. Polda18 D C 12:55, 26 April 2023 (UTC)
@Deisenbe: I would guess that almost any retouching of such a photo would be controversial and should be uploaded as a derivative work under a different filename. Use Retouched picture (more specific than Derived from) on your new upload, and Derivative versions on the original. - Jmabel ! talk 14:34, 26 April 2023 (UTC)

I think I messed up the upload page of Sinhala (Sinhalese) Language...

I just uploaded this SVG file I translated; File:Licensing_tutorial_si.svg. it's the banner image of upload page. I didn't knew wikimedia have Unicode render issues. now, upload page is kinda ruined and page looks like this imgur.com/4OG9Abd. The upload page were better without the translation at this state. The image only looks messed up at upload page. how can I fix it? -- IC9999 (talk) 22:32, 23 April 2023 (UTC)

well, it's not browser issue. it seems to be like website convert SVG to PNG. I guess probably for avoid render issues that browser could had with missing fonts. but instead of solving the problem, it just made it worse. normal SVG would looks fine with my browser. before I upload the file, I tested that image with, different fonts in different browsers on different device. image does not have any problem as an SVG image. it just wikimedia server-side PNG rendering doesn't have the standard fonts. I guess proper way to solve the problem, someone had to install standard fonts to the server machines. I am sure even 15 years old OS have Sinhala fonts installed, why not in here! -- IC9999 (talk) 07:39, 24 April 2023 (UTC)

@Pluperfecttense: Hi, and welcome. Audio recording File:Säkkijärven polkka.wav by arranger and performer Willy Larsen in New York, USA in 1928 is still copyrighted by him and recorder and publisher Columbia Records through 2028 per COM:US. Also, I am sorry to inform you that you are not allowed upload an mp3 file because you have insufficient rights. Too many people try to upload audio files that are still copyrighted by the authors, performers, recorders, publishing companies, etc. without proper licenses from those people. Please document fully the sources and licenses of your audio uploads, and request Autopatrol group membership at COM:RFR when you think you are ready (once you have made more than 500 useful non-botlike edits); having that should allow you to upload mp3 files. Until then, you may reencode the audio into Vorbis or Opus and upload it with full documentation as an .ogg or .oga file (or use any other format accepted per COM:FT#Sound).   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 11:53, 28 April 2023 (UTC)

Looking to retrieve content list from wikipedia pages

Hey there! I was wondering if there is any way or tool to extract the list of contents of a wikipedia page. So, for example, for Earth's page on wikipedia (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Earth) I'd like to retrieve a list with: ethymology, chronology, geographical characteristics, etc.

Does the wikipedia API give me this information? Thanks 61.206.126.59 03:10, 28 April 2023 (UTC)

This isn't really a Wikimedia Commons question.
I'll make the guess that would be easier to scrape by parsing the HTML than to get from the wiki, but I could be wrong. Look in the HTML for *lt;li id="toc- and it should be pretty easy to work out how to do this (either by properly parsing the HTML or by a simpler lexical analysis). - Jmabel ! talk 05:52, 28 April 2023 (UTC)

Question about sock-puppetry

Hi, can an admin here if possible let me know about the rules of sock-puppeting at WikiCommons in relation to Wikipedia.

There has been an issue of a disruptive user on the English Wikipedia Gaura79 who has been blocked for sock-puppeting on two other accounts, one of which was Ilya Mauter. The user never declared these accounts. The same user has an account on WikiCommons Gaura. On their Gaura WikiCommons account which has been active until 2021 they upload photographs by signing their name Ilya Mauter [3]. If you go through this users edits on their Gaura account, a few minutes after they upload photographs they are put onto the Russian Wikipedia by their account Ilya Mauter. The user never declared their multiple accounts nor added a template on their user-page for the Gaura account. As stated the WikiCommons account Gaura has been uploading photographs, to which their account Ilya Mauter has been putting on the Russian Wikipedia. This is a bit odd to be using separate accounts and never declaring them. It looks to me like there has been abuse of accounts here as there are 3 active accounts that all over-lap.

The Gaura account in my opinion should probably be blocked because it has not been declared and there is cross-wiki abuse here that has gone on for a while. I would appreciate if an admin could explain the rules and what should be done here, thanks. Psychologist Guy (talk) 00:07, 30 April 2023 (UTC)

If there is sock puppet abuse on Russian or English Wikipedia, then you must handle it there. It is allowed and quite common to have undeclared parallel accounts on Commons, mostly for keeping your Wikipedia identity separate from your identity as photographer. Many want to have the former private and the latter public. This case doesn't seem to match that pattern, but I don't want to second guess their preferences. –LPfi (talk) 06:55, 30 April 2023 (UTC)

Profile Photo

I'm trying to add a profile picture to an account under my name. How does one do that? Fadola23 (talk) 01:48, 30 April 2023 (UTC)

A profile picture is something that is tolerated here for accounts that have already contributed diligently to Commons. You just created your account and your only upload was deleted as COPYVIO. Just wait until you've made about 500 good edits, by then you'll know how to do the profile picture anyway. C.Suthorn (@Life_is@no-pony.farm) (talk) 08:14, 30 April 2023 (UTC)

Uploading a photo of a piece of technology (like a cellphone)?

Hi -- Probably a very dumb question here, if I took a photo of a cellphone (for my case - a Samsung Galaxy Avant), would I be able to upload it? It's a photo I've taken myself, however I obviously didn't design the phone, it was a team at Samsung who designed the phone, so I'm unsure if I can upload a photo of a piece of technology (like this Galaxy Avant phone). TechNerd22 (talk) 02:27, 30 April 2023 (UTC)

  • @TechNerd22: Typically, photos of functional objects are OK. Rules vary a bit by country, and you don't say what country you are in. I'd say go ahead and upload it; if there is a logo anywhere on it, you should probably mark it with Trademark as well as a license. Worst case is it ends up deleted, which for something like this would be no big deal, and wouldn't be held against you. - Jmabel ! talk 08:19, 30 April 2023 (UTC)
Just look at the image at Category:Samsung Galaxy for examples on how to do that. C.Suthorn (@Life_is@no-pony.farm) (talk) 08:19, 30 April 2023 (UTC)
You may want to state Own as author, not just Own. In this case it is quite clear regardless, but being explicit does not hurt. –LPfi (talk) 11:36, 30 April 2023 (UTC)

You do not need however any declaration from Takis Papgiannidis, unless Aravanitakis transferred the full copyright to Papgiannidis - and it doesn't look like that, as Arvanitakis posted it as copyrighted at Flickr. --C.Suthorn (@Life_is@no-pony.farm) (talk) 21:07, 30 April 2023 (UTC)
@Drpensionistas: and when C.Suthorn says "You need the permission of the photographer" that doesn't just mean you personally need to hear from him. Either he has to post the specific license for this image on a website or page clearly under his control, or he needs to go through the process described at COM:VRT to issue said license. - Jmabel ! talk 00:36, 1 May 2023 (UTC)

So the current Wikipedia page for Hankook Tire has an outdated logo as of about 4 years ago it turns out. I want to upload the updated logo in order to replace it on it's page, but I don't think I've been instructed in clear and concise language just HOW I would go about doing so. I know it's not against the guidelines, so how am I supposed to specify the details of the image in order to upload it? Hello alpine (talk) 03:55, 30 April 2023 (UTC)

Currently there are 3 images of the logo at Commons. Two of them (one "logo as of 2019") have a wrong license and one of these has a COPYVIO tag for deletion. The third is an SVG claiming missing the TOO. This third may be the current logo, so you do not need to upload another one and can simply replace it in the article. C.Suthorn (@Life_is@no-pony.farm) (talk) 08:25, 30 April 2023 (UTC)
@Hello alpine: In case it is not File:Hankook Tire logo.svg, which C.Suthorn just referred to: without seeing the logo, I have no idea if it is complex enough to qualify for copyright. If it is, then it can't go on Commons without a license from the copyright-holder of the image. If it is just text, you can upload and use PD-textlogo in lieu of a license. See Commons:Threshold_of_originality#South_Korea for more about the threshold of originality in South Korea.
If it is over the threshold of originality, and therefore subject to copyright, it should not go on Commons. Several wikipedias, including the English-language Wikipedia, have reasonably permissive policies for handling non-free logos, but that is strictly within that wikipedia and does not involve Commons. - Jmabel ! talk 08:30, 30 April 2023 (UTC)
Is it actually possible to use it in the Wikipedia article without the image being in Commons first, though? Hello alpine (talk) 08:35, 30 April 2023 (UTC)
Provided that the wikipedia in question has a "fair use" policy and the local upload adheres to that fair use policy. But you would have to ask that at the wikipedia in question. English language wikipedia has a fair use policy, but it is complex and difficult to obey. C.Suthorn (@Life_is@no-pony.farm) (talk) 09:08, 30 April 2023 (UTC)
It is worth noting though that the prior logo used was falsely uploaded under a self-owned copyright tag, and several other logos for tire companies seem to be uploaded under the pretense of "geometric shapes or text that don't meet the threshold for copyright protection". Would that apply here instead, and I could just change the tag on it? Hello alpine (talk) 19:50, 6 May 2023 (UTC)

Squadron Photo from World War II

Hi, I would like to upload an old government photo in our family's possession for many years that was taken in June 1944 of a U.S. squadron based in the Central Pacific in World War II. Is that permisable? Thanks. Akiva123 (talk) 02:37, 29 April 2023 (UTC)

  • @Akiva123: When you say "government photo": do you know for certain that it was taken by a military (or other) employee of the U.S. government who took the photo in the line of duty? If so, then it is certainly public domain. If not, what do you know about who took it and when (if ever) it had any sort of publication (even if limited to making copies for the people in the squadron)? - Jmabel ! talk 03:18, 29 April 2023 (UTC)
Yes, definitely a U.S. Marine Corps photo taken of the squadron at the time. I tried uploading it, and I believe I chose the option indicating it was a government photo, but it wasn't accepted. Suggestions? Thanks! Akiva123 (talk) 20:53, 29 April 2023 (UTC)
It was rejected automatically, as the system saw it as a probable copyright violation (a "web resolution" photo). If you have the photo, please scan it with bigger resolution. If the photo is tiny and using a big resolution really doesn't make sense, then we have to find som other solution, but if the photo is 2" wide and you scan at 600 ppi I think there will be no problem in uploading the result. –LPfi (talk) 06:44, 30 April 2023 (UTC)
    • And if all you have is the low-res image, and the image is PD, you just have to upload it directly to Commons instead of doing a cross-wiki upload, because we filter the latter more heavily (far more potential copyvios in the latter, because people working on other wikis often have not given any thought it copyright of images). - Jmabel ! talk 08:13, 30 April 2023 (UTC)
Hello! Thanks so much for your help. I took your advice and re-scanned the photo at 600dpi, but still get the same message: "We could not determine whether this file is suitable for Wikimedia Commons. Please only upload photos that you took yourself with your camera, or see what else is acceptable." Any other suggestions of what I might do to upload the photo successfully? Thanks in advance. Akiva123 (talk) 20:01, 2 May 2023 (UTC)
      • @Akiva123: are you uploading through Special:Upload, Special:UploadWizard or by some other method?
      • @LPfi: , what log did you access that let you determine that before? - Jmabel ! talk 22:19, 2 May 2023 (UTC)
I used the upload wizard. I'm not sure I understand your second question? Akiva123 (talk) 01:25, 3 May 2023 (UTC)
        • @Akiva123: Second question wasn't to you, and I wouldn't expect you to know the answer. So, just to make sure: you used the Upload Wizard on Commons that I linked above, not the one on Wikipedia, and you got this result? I'm a little surprised. I don't use the Wizards myself, so I don't know all the details of the interaction, but did it give you the chance to say that the photo is in the public domain because it was of U.S. military origin?
        • And could someone possibly weigh in here who is an experienced user of Special:UploadWizard? - Jmabel ! talk 03:14, 3 May 2023 (UTC)
Your previous try was a 19813-byte jpeg of 256×203 px. The new try was a 14934-byte jpeg of 128×95 px, which at 600 ppi means something like 5·4 mm. It seems something went wrong, unless I misunderstand the entries totally. (The log entries are Special:AbuseLog/9743463 and Special:AbuseLog/9750567 respectively.) –LPfi (talk) 07:50, 3 May 2023 (UTC)
Searching the Special:AbuseLog with the user name into the "user" box. [4] -- Asclepias (talk) 15:57, 3 May 2023 (UTC)
@Jmabel: The user contributions page has a link to the abuse log for the user, in the link row before the contribution list. –LPfi (talk) 19:28, 3 May 2023 (UTC)
Any guidance most appreciated. Thanks! Akiva123 (talk) 00:49, 4 May 2023 (UTC)
@Akiva123: LPfi indicates above that these are tiny images: "a 19813-byte jpeg of 256×203 px" and "14934-byte jpeg of 128×95 px" If that latter is 600dpi, that is smaller than a human fingernail, so I suspect there is something wrong with the files. What does your own system say about the file size and dimensions of the file you are trying to upload (if it's a PC, you can get the dimensions via Properties)? - Jmabel ! talk 02:15, 4 May 2023 (UTC)
The original photo is letter paper in size (8.5 x 11 inches). I scanned the photo on a flatbed printer, choosing the 600 dpi option. The resulting JPEG is 15KB in size and 128 x 95 in dimensions. Does that help? Really appreciate your help! Akiva123 (talk) 02:57, 4 May 2023 (UTC)
Odd. 128px/11" would be less than 12 ppi, i.e. each pixel would cover some 2×2 mm. Does the resulting image look like that? Is the original fuzzy enough for that to make sense? –LPfi (talk) 07:35, 4 May 2023 (UTC)
With that large an original you could try with the default scanner settings. Did those result in the 256×203 px file? Look at the files you tried to upload, in full resolution, and compare to the original: Do they look the same? Did the scans capture all detail? If the scans indeed are good, then we should get them here (I think what you got at upload were just warnings, you might be able to just go ahead), but to me it seems there is some weirdness to be solved. –LPfi (talk) 07:46, 4 May 2023 (UTC)
You figured out the problem! Yes, the photo size was too small. It somehow shrunk while transferring from USB drive. All fixed now. Thank you all so much for your help! Akiva123 (talk) 03:42, 5 May 2023 (UTC)
@Akiva123: Thank you for uploading File:Squadron VMSB-151-Engebi Island-June1944.jpg. Is there any more information you can share about the cause of the shrinkage which may inform COM:HD?   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 10:26, 10 May 2023 (UTC)

Change of pictures

Hi! I have for a very long time wondered about how to change pictures. I've been using Wikipedia and Wikibooks for about 20 years now and I have never understood how to change a picture. I mainly upload circuit diagrams and often I see a tiny thing that I wish to change. Up till now the only solution has been to upload a new picture with another name. But I think it is a sad thing if Commons has a lot of pictures that are not relevant. So how do I do if I wish to edit a picture? Knoppson (talk) 21:13, 29 April 2023 (UTC)

If you want to upload a new version of an image, there's normally a link "Upload a new version of this file" below, which should do just that. You should only do this for correcting obvious errors. If your change is more a matter of opinion or taste, it is better to upload a new image and let the Wikimedians of the respective Wikipedias choose which image to use in their articles. For disk space, it doesn't make a difference, all versions of a file are kept, anyhow. --rimshottalk 22:15, 29 April 2023 (UTC)
The link is at the file description page. Sometimes clicking the image lands you on the "image viewer" instead, and then you have to click "more information" or the like to get to the proper description. Below the image description and the licence template, there is the upload history, and just below it the link for uploading a new version. –LPfi (talk) 06:49, 30 April 2023 (UTC)
If you overwrite an existing image with a new image, you should check whether or not the change will affect any Wikipedia articles. If it does, you should either create a new name for the updated file, modify the relevant Wikipedia entry or notify somebody on the relevant Wikipedia of the change.
As an example, I update the image File:IBANMap-World6.svg as and when new countries adopt the IBAN. The image has the date of last update on it. I checked all Wikipedias that used the file and I updated one of them myself. For reasons that I need not discuss here, I have been blocked on the Simple Wikipedia, so I contacted an administrator who got shirty with me. As a result when that image is used on Simple:International_Bank_Account_Number, the caption does not make sense - not my fault, the administrator's fault! Martinvl (talk) —Preceding undated comment was added at 21:34, 30 April 2023 (UTC)
@Martinvl: I updated that caption for you. How did you contact Auntof6 or Djsasso?   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 10:56, 10 May 2023 (UTC)
@Jeff G.: : Thank you for the update. In response to your question, yes, I pinged both User:Auntof6 and User:Djsasso from my Talk page one two separate occasions to inform them that the map had been updated and that the caption was out of date. On the first occasion (22 February 2021), one of them updated the caption. However on the second occasion (24 November 2021) regarding a further update, I had my talk page access removed. Needless to say, the removal of my talk page access for what I regarded as an act of courtesy left a very bad taste in my mouth. Martinvl (talk) 20:05, 10 May 2023 (UTC)
