I don't see any uploads under your account here at Wikimedia Commons. If you uploaded the photo directly to a Wikipedia, you will have to go there to find their deletion policy and procedures. Solomon203 in 2023 is a subcategory of Wikimedians of Taiwan in 2023 which is again a subcategory of People of Taiwan in 2023. But Solomon203 in 2023 døs not actually contain any images of Wikimedia user Solomon203 in 2013.
Hi, So this may seem like a daft question but whilst categorising vehicles at Category:Ford Transit Custom (2012) I've come across this image which is titled "Kombi" however I've also come across this image (visually indentical) which is titled "bus"
"Kombi" is German for station wagon, but Ford themselves call this vehicle "bus", so the bus category is certainly correct. As for whether it is needed: there are a bunch of images and separating them by type of car doesn't seem like a bad idea, so why not. --rimshottalk21:46, 2 January 2023 (UTC)

Hi. I want to cite an article published in a book. The article has 2 authors and a specific topic, and then it is published in a book which is edited by other people. This is kind of normal in scholarship (and I am a historian), but I can't find a template for it for Wikipedia. Do I use the "Book" template and then do something like "Chapter=" and then the title? This is Wikimedia Commons, not Wikipedia. As we don't generally do articles, just media, we don't do a lot of citing either. In your case, I would go for {{Cite book}} and cite the article as a chapter. You could cite pages x..xx instead, but then you would have no place to put the article's title. The current uploading statement on Wikimedia Commons says, "First published in the United States before 1927" when uploading an image that falls under U.S. copyright laws. How do I add figures from an open access article without triggering the deletion bot?
I am trying to add some figures from a scientific article by Cano, et al which is an open access article. Anyone can access the license by clicking on the information ("i") link next to the article.
A bot is telling me that figures like this one are going to be deleted due to insufficient licensing information. How do I convince the bots that control wikimedia that this figure is licensed for re-use? Dabs (talk) 14:48, 3 January 2023 (UTC)
@Dabs: Hi, There are two problems, one minor and one major. The minor one is that Wikimedia Commons uses templates to indicate licenses. (Cf. Commons:Copyright tags and Category:License tags.) If a work is free, it can be fixed easily in the description page of the file by inserting the template corresponding to the situation. The major problem is that the work you want to use is not offered under a free license because non-commercial (NC) and no-derivatives (ND) licenses are not considered free licenses. (Cf. Commons:Licensing.) Wikimedia Commons hosts only free works. It cannot be fixed unless the owner of the copyright changes the license of the work to a free license. -- Asclepias (talk) 15:28, 3 January 2023 (UTC)
@Asclepias, I can't seem to solve the simpler problem. See this file. This is again from an open-access article, but in this case (as indicated in the Permissions section on the wikimedia page) the journal's "permissions" page indicates CC-BY using "CC BY" and a verbal explanation. It just links to Creative Commons, not to any specific license, and it does not have the exact code for any specific version of CC-BY, so I did not feel it was the right thing for me to select one of those. Hello! A few years ago I uploaded this file. This logo has been revived with a version with better quality and a more correct version. I uploaded the correct version here, but now there are two files existing. I want to edit the old version (first link listed) and replace it wit the correct version of the logo (last link listed). Can someone help me do that and then delete the new file when the new file is on the correct «page»? Many thanks in advance!
Hi -- I'm going to put a bit of effort into finding a photo for an article I wrote yesterday. It's a biographical article about someone who passed away around fifteen years ago. My plan is to reach out to his colleagues and family members to see whether anyone has a photo of him which they took/created that they are willing to release under allowable licenses.
Here is my question: given most of these people will be in their 80's, at least, I will likely be the person uploading the image for them. My assumption is that I'll use the category in the wizard marked "Another reason not mentioned above" (?). If the creator of the image gives permission to release it to the public domain (or other analogous/allowable license) how do I document this for the upload process?

Hello, I am working for New York Assemblyman Anil Beephan Jr. who has tasked me with creating a Wikipedia page for him. I saw that someone had already created one, although don't know who it is, so I figured I would edit the existing page. However, I am only getting the edit source tab on the top right and not the edit tab as I've seen in several tutorials. Is there something I'm missing? @Lupsei27: First you are on the wrong project. I suppose you mean en:Anil Beephan Jr. on the English Wikipedia, and this is Wikimedia Commons, which is mostly concerns with multimedia documents. @Raylaur15: Almost no album cover is public domain, no idea where you got that idea. Very few meet the requirements to be allowed on Commons.

I am Julie Dawn Dennis, artist and photographer and I wrote an entry to try and move my arts practice forward after 2 years of being bullied by an anonymous person remotely (not Wikipedia but multiple other organisations). A Wikipedia user called 'Blaze Wolf' then marked this entry as 'explicit' for no reason at all and it has gone. How does Wikipedia manage persons like Blaze Wolf who are not following the rules please? Thank you for your help. Much appreciated. You are here on commons, which is just the media-hosting site. Anything about wikipedia, the encyclopedia site, would need to be discussed there. And you'll obviously need to provide your previous account-name or the actual article-titles you're talking about so others can "see what you are seeing" in order to discuss it. Were you given any links or explanations beyond the one word "explicit"? But regardless, I can with fair confidence say your goals are not compatible with wikipedia and it's likely your content was also not appropriate either, and you should not get offended when someone who knows the rules and guidelines tells you that. Adding old public photos
Hello!
I tried to upload an old, public photo taken in 1917., but I cannot unless I put that it os my own work, which is not true.
How can I do that? That photo already exists on wikipedia but under different language, but it cannot be found.

What do you mean by "public photo"? Not a term with any normally accepted use.
What upload tool are you trying to use? Or are you asking what you should use?
Can you provide a link to the particular page the photo is on & indicate what photo, so someone can give you concrete answers?
@Ku423winz1: What is your basis to say it is "too much old"? I see no reference to a particular photo here, and there are plenty of photos from 1917 that are not yet in the public domain. Those photos published after 28 February 1989 are copyrighted in the United States (that is not related to the URAA dispositions of the U.S. Copyright Act). The year 1998 may apply to the use of such photos inside Brazil but it does not seem to have an effect for Commons. The two templates mention the year 1998, but it must be read together with the rest of the templates, which limits their scope to works published before March 1989 or earlier.
The template PD-Brazil-Photo looks like a very recent creation. Its present form includes the text of the template PD-1996-text/i18n, which is about the URAA-related dispositions of the U.S. copyright. As a result, in their present form, the templates PD-Brazil-URAA and PD-Brazil-Photo present rather similar texts about photos, but presented in inverted order. The template PD-Brazil-URAA begins with the URAA-related rules of the U.S. copyright and continues with considerations about Brazilian copyright. The template PD-Brazil-Photo inverts the order. It begins with considerations about Brazilian copyright and continues by including the URAA-related dispositions of the U.S. copyright. If they seem to be to the same effect about photos, they may be interchangeable.
However, there is a substantial aspect to consider. The paragraph about photos in PD-Brazil-URAA seems based on an interpretation (or misinterpretation) of the U.S. Copyright Act which is questioned. The U.S. URAA Act gave a U.S. copyright to non-U.S. works, although it made an exception for works that, in their country of origin, had a copyright that expired before 1996. The relevant text in the U.S. Copyright Act says that a work that acquired such a copyright was "an original work of authorship that [...] is not in the public domain in its source country through expiration of term of protection" [2]. That text makes the exception narrow. It seems that, to be excluded from such U.S. copyright, it was not sufficient that the work was in the public domain in the source country. That public domain status in the source country must have been attained "through expiration of term of protection". Non-artistic Brazilian photos that never had a Brazilian copyright acquired a U.S. copyright and they are not covered by the exception applicable to works that actually had a Brazilian copyright that expired. It is counter-intuitive, because the result of the U.S. URAA Act is, for example, that a non-artistic photo that was never copyrighted in Brazil acquired a copyright in the U.S., while an artistic photo from the same year that was copyrighted in Brazil and whose copyright had expired in Brazil did not acquire a copyright in the U.S.
(For the record, I once made the misinterpretation, before other users, who know U.S. law much better, explained it in this 2012 discussion where I had the wrong rationale and the other user had the right rationale). Things being what they are, the photo paragraph of the template PD-Brazil-URAA seems contrary to the prevailing understanding of the situation. There was a discussion in Portuguese on the template creator's talk page about the template. I don't know if that point was discussed. Also, that can be complexified in light of the problematic on Commons about the directive of the Wikimedia Foundation who wanted to reserve all decisions about URAA-related files exclusively to the Wikimedia Foundation itself, not to Commons. It is a different question but it can affect the matter.
In short, if the exception from the URAA does not apply to them, for the purpose of the U.S. copyright and of Commons, non-artistic Brazilian photos could be classified in a few groups:
first published more than 95 years ago: in the public domain in the U.S. Template PD-US-expired on Commons.
first published less than 95 years ago but before 1 March 1989: copyrighted in the U.S., either because of the URAA (template Not-PD-US-URAA) or because they had complied with U.S. copyright formalities. (But may be in the public domain if first simultaneously published in the U.S. and did not comply with U.S. formalities.)
first published after 28 February 1989: copyrighted in the U.S. (unrelated to the URAA). Unusable on Commons unless freely released.
If so, the concept of the template PD-Brazil-Photo would not seem compatible with the template PD-1996 (or PD-1996-text/i18n), which it currently uses. But it could be compatible with the templates PD-US-expired and Not-PD-US-URAA in applicable cases. -- Asclepias (talk) 12:41, 8 January 2023 (UTC)
Orangemirror If the particular content is in the public domain, then relevant images are welcome. But do make sure about that public domain aspect: Much of the content on newspapers.com is still copyrighted, so just like if you had access to the newspaper through a library, you won't (for example) be able to use most U.S. images that are later than 1927. - Jmabel ! talk04:47, 8 January 2023 (UTC)

Are you claiming there is a free license available for this? I can't imagine why there would be. It's possible that it is below the threshold of originality for logos in Bahrain, and therefore might be public domain; I don't know the relevant laws in that country well enough to know. I vectorized a badjpg image. Do I have to replace it on all different Wikipedias manually?
I made a vector image, Globalisationchart.svg, that is not an exact copy but a stylistically improved version of Globalisationchart.jpg, which had a badjpg template. The template asks me to replace all occurrences of the original with the newer version. I am confused and do not know how to be sure about uploading images from the website 'pexels.com'. I have uploaded a series of images from there by taking previous uploads and our "Pexels-Cc-zero" template as the reference. However, @A.Savin warned me about the extent of their licencing principles. You can find the related conversation in my talk page. So, I do not know how to act now. Can someone explain me and other users if such uploads can make or not? If there is a problem, many files must be deleted. My uploads are dated back one months ago and they are not just these files. There are about 400 photos. All of them do not breach the copyright rules according to your claims because some of them were uploaded before 5 July 2018. If you search "pexels.com" on Commons, there are 1.489 files coming from this website. Some says files must be deleted via speedy deletion. Then, the other person comes and says that every file should be discussed before deletion. And again someone declares that actually they must be deleted via speedy deletion. Beacuse of this instability, our problem is getting bigger every time. I think I clearly told the story and asked for the real solution. There must be a certain rule against a certain situation. Everyone says something and nobody knows nothing. Perfect. I am waiting for a respond for hours and whenever I took an action, someone says that it should have been done in other way. That seems a logical view and it is probably mostly correct in theory. Things may be more complex in practice. We would need someone familiar with pexels to tell the subtleties. Section 5.04 of their "Terms and Conditions" states that pexels still has some images identified "CC0 Content". It is not specified if the website still offers an option for their users to upload new images under CC0, but section 4.0 seems to imply that it is not possible. But for some images a difficulty can be to determine when it was uploaded. Pexels seems to sometimes indicate the date of upload but not always. When not, the image can probably not be uploaded to Commons unless it is tagged "CC0 Content" on pexels. -- Asclepias (talk) 20:30, 9 January 2023 (UTC)
I don't think speedy deletion is necessary for files from pexels.com. Actually, the issue is not really each individual file, but the fact that Commons is a plateform which redistributes these files, which is not allowed by the license. Yann (talk) 22:18, 9 January 2023 (UTC)
That license applies only to the content that is licensed under that license. The terms and conditions in section 5.5 even specify that the license does not apply to the content that is CC0. Also, works that were released to the public domain could not be removed retroactively from the public domain to be licensed. "Own" would not be correct if you are not Neil Hammer. Do not claim photos taken by someone else as your own work. If Neil Hammer has given you permission to license the photo under a free license but for whatever reason wants you to upload them rather than doing so themself, that can be done, but is a bit more involved - you need proof of permission from the copyright holder (presumably the photographer Neil Hammer - if that cannot be proven with an online link, send proof of permission, details at Commons:VRT Thanks for asking, hope this helps. As I had planned to donate a lot of my images to Wikimedia, I started with this file yesterday:

. I used the Upload Wizard and uploaded it under CC BY-SA 4.0, which also is visible in the image page. However if I click the "Use this file on the web" link, the attribution shows my name followed by "Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons". How could that happen? Was the "PD-US-architecture" template the reason? That template just covers the building though, not my photo of that building. How can I correct the attribution and replace "Public Domain" with "CC BY-SA 4.0"? Strangely when I uploaded my second photo, the correct license appeared in the attribution.
Another thing: How can I make the attribution include a link to my website? Right now my name in the attribution is linked to the page of the file on Wikimedia. When I looked up the license on the Creative Commons website, it appeared that those attributions can contain a link to the actual author. I do not want to use Wikimedia as a free to to promote my website, but if somebody uses the photo under the CC license on his website, it seems logical to me that the attribution links to the actual author of the photo instead to Wikimedia, if you click the author's name. Wikimedia could still be linked if you click "via Wikimedia Commons". Is there a way to customize the attribution in that way? Skyscraperfan (talk) 11:43, 10 January 2023 (UTC)
@Skyscraperfan: Your hypothesis is probably correct that it can be because of the architecture template. Your other photo does not have the same template, which strengthens the hypothesis. The "use this file" thing is one technical tool and it may not be perfect. Yes it is terribly misleading, but I don't know if users can do something about it. You can try to report the problem at the administrators' noticeboard and see if they can fix it. Hopefully, reusers of the photo will use the actual licensing information from the description page. It is ok to word your requested CC attribution the way you want, including a link to your website. You can include your complete requested attribution, exactly as you want it, in the "attribution=" parameter of the CC license template, which in theory should be the clearest place for it, and possibly also in the "author" field of the information template. -- Asclepias (talk) 15:06, 10 January 2023 (UTC)
Thanks for your answer! If that template causes a problem, that could be a major issue, because I understood that it is the standard template for all exterior photos of buildings that were completed in the US before 1990. Many people who used that template might not be aware of the problem. When I removed the template, nothing changed though. Maybe because once a file is seen as public domain, it stays that way.
In the author field I had already put a link using the standard notation for links on Wikipedia. That link worked well in the author field of the file page, but it did not appear in the "Use this file" popup. I will try the attribution parameter though. Thanks! I tried again deleting the "PD-US-architecture" template and then looked at it with another browser and suddenly the CC attribution was there. Then I added the template again, deleted the browser cash and reloaded the page and it was back to public domain. So that template really seems to be the issue, although it is only about the depicted building and not the photo itself. I have to look for another template now or not use a template at all. Does the following image meet the threshold of originality?
I'm currently working on a BLP article on Wikipedia, and want to include this image of the cover of the this image of the September 2003 issue of Game Developer Magazine.
It seems obvious to me that this is the cover page of a copyrighted publication. As a project, we've already gone too far down a dangerous slippery slope of extracting individual elements from copyrighted works and claiming them to be somehow public domain, even when guidance on the matter is pretty cut-and-dried.RadioKAOS (talk) 17:57, 10 January 2023 (UTC)

In the current version of the article I have a cover from Game Developer, but it is not an issue the BLP contributed to. Max size for reupload smaller than for a new upload
So earlier this day I uploaded a file which is 185 MB. Later I've noticed that the page order was broken. Having fixed it locally I've tried to reupload it, but on the reupload page the max allowed size was only 100 MB, except for uploads from whitelisted web-servers, which is now the workaround I was able to use in this case by cross-uploading to archive.org. However, is it really intended for the reupload max size to be way under the regular upload max size? eugrus (talk) 18:30, 10 January 2023 (UTC)

Upload Wizard needs update of Public Domain license year
The Upload Wizard area for adding a license to a "public domain" file where it states, "The copyright has definitely expired in the USA" needs to be updated in two lines below this selection, from "... before 1927" to "... before 1928."
I am doing research on New Jersey municipal flags and have some images that could be made up for use on wikipedia and in publications. I dont know how to use any visual software to make 2D images any help would be much appreciated. Rjl072001 (talk) 04:25, 9 January 2023 (UTC)

I will check on the copy right of flags. The images I do have are taken by say a cellphone and give a good sense of the design but are not the clean vector images like many of the flags seen here on wikipedia. I do not have the software or knowledge to create them based off of the initial images. I was hoping to work with someone on wikipedia to create the improved and clean and flat images of flags. Hi, I'd like to upload an old image. I tried using the Commons Wizard, but couldn't figure out how to deal with the age of the image. The image is for a fellow named Robert Christie, of Lower Canada, and the image is available here: http://www2.ville.montreal.qc.ca/archives/portraits/fr/fiches/P0413.shtm . His Wikipedia article is here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Christie_(Lower_Canada_politician) The background is that Christie was born 1787 and died in 1856, so it's pretty sure that the image is not in copyright. The engraver was C.S. Taylor, based on a painting by Devis. Taylor is likely this fellow https://www.npg.org.uk/collections/search/person/mp88046/cs-taylor, who was "active 1826", and Devis was likely this fellow, who died in 1822: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arthur_William_Devis My problem is that when I used the uploading gadget, it asked for a definite date for the image, which I don't have. Given the age of the sitter, the artist and the engraver, it should be out of copyright, but I couldn't figure out how to put all that information into the description for the Commons. Taylor" after that, and it is safe to use {{PD-old-100}} because there is no way someone active in 1826 was still alive in 1923 (100 years ago) and {{PD-US-expired}} because it is a safe bet that the only reason someone would have done an engraving of a painting like this is for publication. - Jmabel ! talk19:45, 10 January 2023 (UTC)

I've got the Commons Wizard open, and I'm on the page that says to add information about the image and the person. I've done that, and now I'm at the box that says "Date work was created or first published". Do I just guess at that point? And where do I enter the codes {{PD-old-100}} and {{PD-US-expired}} ? @Mr Serjeant Buzfuz: For the upload, I'd say you could choose between these options:
Either do not use the Wizard tool and instead use the basic Upload form. IMO, best option.
Or if you absolutely want to use the Wizard tool, look if it has some option somewhere to "ignore problems" or something like that. Or, if not, feed it with something that will let you upload and correct the information after the upload.
The copyright status templates usually go into the "licensing" section below the information template or into the "permission" field of the information template.

Botheration! it's the wrong Robert Christie! When I hit Upload, got an error message that said it couldn't be uploaded from that website, the Montreal Archives. So I did some poking around, and discovered that it's in the National Galleries of Scotland: "Robert Christie, c 1744 - 1834. Underwriter at Lloyds" : https://www.nationalgalleries.org/art-and-artists/26618 . That explained something that puzzled me - the style of clothes seemed 18th century, and there was nothing in the sources I've found on the Lower Canada Robert Christie that indicated he had ever travelled to Britain, so when would Devis have painted him? In the upload box did you indicate the location of the copy of the image file saved on your system? The upload will not work with the url of the external source. As the Upload Wizard is quite intransparent in what it does, I prefer to use the "Basic Upload" to enter the data directly. However if I do that, the file history "Comments" field looks very messed up. If I used the Upload Wizard, the Comments field just said "Uploaded own work with UploadWizard". If I use the Basic Upload though, all the data I put into the "Summary" field will also appear in the "Comments" field of the file history. Not the output, but the raw code with all those tags and brackets. The same code will also appear in the revision history of that file. Not sure if that behaviour is really intended. It looks really bad visually. It may not have any negative consequences for the functionality, but if someone sees that page, he might get the impression that I entered the code into the wrong field.
Is there any way to edit or delete one of those automatically generated comments? I think a comment should always be generated by the uploader, not automatically.

@Skyscraperfan: It's normal. As far as I can tell, it has always been there since the beginning, when the basic upload form was the usual form. It's the upload log that gets copied as the first entry into the file history. It is somewhat comparable to what happens at the creation of pages (categories pages, talk pages, etc.), when the string of characters at the beginning of the newly created page gets copied by default into the first entry in the history of the page. See Special:NewPages for examples of pages created in the last few minutes or hours and the first entries in their histories. Because the entry copies only the beginning of the page, I guess the raw format possibly prevents problems that might otherwise be caused by marks that would remain unclosed.
When creating pages in namespaces other than the "file" namespace, the user can replace the default entry with something else. The situation is different when creating a file. The differences may have to do with a connection between that namespace and the logs. I don't know an easy way to replace the default entry of the creation of a file, but other users probably know more about it.
The information preserved in the upload logs is very useful, although most users may not have a use for it. The information that was originally provided with a file now deleted or a deleted version can provide the clue to find a source or author, including, but not only, for checking copyright violations in other files or versions or restoring correct information that was lost in a file move, etc.
I don't think of it as a problem. In an ideal situation, the default entries would always be present in the upload logs proper, including for files uploaded with the Wizard, but they would not necessarily be copied into the box on the file description page. But if I had to choose between the information not being available at all or having it copied on the description page, I prefer to have it preserved and available.
The maximal length of the string of characters copied into those entries used to be shorter. They didn't take much space. it seems that the maximal length of those entries inflated and doubled near the beginning of 2018. Consequently, the first entries tend to take more space now. But be reassured. Viewers of Wikimedia websites get used to such history entries. People will not think you made a mistake.
If the entry in the file history really, really bothers you, it might be possible to try to imagine and test a possible way to get the result you want, but it's not practical. Maybe try to upload a file with, in the descrition box of the upload form, only a short comment of your choice in plain text and nothing else. I don't know if it works. It never occured to me to try something like that before you asked. Then, after the upload, edit the description page and write all the information.
The simplicity and the flexibility of the basic form are its advantages. When we use it, we may have to accept the inconvenient of the default entry. -- Asclepias (talk) 18:57, 12 January 2023 (UTC)
That actually sounds like a good idea. I will try if the Basic Upload will allow me to add a file without any information and then add that information a few seconds later. There is a warning that files which lack certain information will be deleted, but I hope that is a manual process. That would give me the few seconds I need to edit the file. I have tested your suggestion. The Basic Upload does not let me upload the file if I leave the summary file completely blank. So I tried how much I have to add in order for it to work. It turns out all it needs is two pairs of curly brackets like you would do to insert a template. It even works if those brackets are empty. So I chose to write "Uploaded with the Basic Tool" followed by those four brackets. Then it worked fine. A few seconds later, I edited the file and replaced the text with the complete code that contains author, source, location, license and categories. It worked very well. Those four curly brackets of course are still in the comment field now, but at least not all that code like the last time. This might be the way I will upload all my photos in future. Hello, I am the owner of an archive, of which I have photographed or scanned several items and included on Simeon Prior's Wikipedia page. All of the documents of which I took photos are from 1850 or before, so they are clearly in the public domain. On top of that I own the originals, as they have been handed down to me over 7 generations.
I'm a bit confused as how to categorize these images since I own the originals and I am the one who scanned or took photos of the originals. Two images are land deeds, one from 1782 and one from 1801. Another is a township document from 1810. Another is an image of my 4th great grandfather.
@Kclarke.enteract: Copying, scanning, owning originals or copies, etc. doesn't create new copyrights (though you could credit yourself as a source, the same way we would credit a library that provided similar materials). Categorization as such is mainly topical: e.g. Category:Legal documents or some subcat of that, and you probably want to create a Category:Simeon Prior with analogous parent categories to the en-wiki article. @Albanianambassadors: If by "my page on Wikipedia" you mean that you plan to write about yourself on Wikipedia, please don't. See en:WP:COI (the English-language Wikipedia's page about conflicts of interest) for why not.
On the other hand, for any images or historically significant documents for which you as an organization own the copyright, if you want to free-license them and upload them to Commons, that's great. The simplest way is to indicate an appropriate free license (e.g. {{CC-BY-SA 4.0}} for the particular materials on your own website. That can then be indicated as the source when uploading to Commons. If for some reason that is inconvenient to do on your own site, you can correspond with the team at COM:VRT (best done with email from the albanianambassadors.al domain) to establish to their satisfaction that this account is allowed to upload on behalf of that organization, and that when you state that that organization is granting a particular license for a particular file, that can be trusted. - Jmabel ! talk23:15, 13 January 2023 (UTC)

@Martyn1958: files on Commons can be freely-used, as long as you follow the licensing guidelines in the file description pages. Normally all files have indicated authors of photographs and the type of license used. No remuneration to Wikimedian photographers (or for some imports, Flickr or Panoramio photographers), just that you properly attribute them in accordance with the licensing terms of the files. @Martyn1958 Be aware that different files have different licenses. In many cases, the licensing terms also require you to name and/or link the license. In some cases, you may even need to reprint the full text of the license in your book. Make sure to always read the actual license text (not just the summary you'll find below the image). There may be a few possibilities. I'm not sure if these possibilities have what you want because I don't use them. But you could have a look. Other users may know better options.
A. One or several upload applications may have features you are looking for.
B. You could look if you find what you are looking for if you click on "build your own upload link" on this page.
C. Something probably too simple for what you are looking for, is to save the complete pre-filled information somewhere in your userspace and just copy-paste it in the upload box.
However, the additional requirement number 1 in your current permission template contradicts the CC license. If you use a CC license, you cannot require that the credit be always in the vicinity of the image. See also the CC FAQ. Assuming you are working on a PC, I'd suggest just keeping this in a file on your PC Desktop and using Special:Upload for your uploads. Then step one is to copy-paste that into the edit box there. Also, you might want to save yourself even more typing by adding:

Also, thank you for the heads up on the permission template. I've seen other people do it this way, therefore I did not know that it contradicts the CC license. I will try finding another way of doing it, possibly I will rewrite it to say something like "I would be happy if (...)", if that is okay?
@Vasmar1 You can choose "this is not my own work" in the UploadWizard. The Wizard will then open input fields for author, source and license. The entered values will be kept as default for later uploads. If you use Android (for example a tablet) you can use Offroader as upload tool. Why is Attribution-NonCommercial_License out of scope ?
Commons is originally constituted (as a deliberate choice, it didn't have to be this way, but it was decided that it should be) to be a media repository for all. Including those who want to build commercial products out of Commons resources.
In my case that leads to using Flickr instead of Commons (which I would have preferred to "advertise" when giving credit). The Wikipedia argumentation could also be achieved if this restriction would be there instead.Dulliman (talk) 14:38, 15 January 2023 (UTC)

Yesterday, File:Radar of the Alexander City tornado emergency.jpg was speedy deleted under a copyright violation. I have a general question since I used an application called RadarOmega to access public domain NEXRAD radar content, which is operated and controlled by the United States Government. In Commons gibt es viele Dateien im Format SVG. Auf der Dateibeschreibungsseite fehlt ein Link zum Download. Angeboten werden nut gerenderte Daten als PNG. Es gibt auch keine Information, dass man das SVG herunterladen kann durch Rechtsklick auf die angezeigte Grafik und im dann erscheinenden Menü die Auswahl von "Ziel speichern unter" - oder wie das in anderen Sprachen heisst.

Tracking image views
Hello, Is there a way to determine on Wikimedia Commons how many times an image has been viewed?
The tool I have found (https://glamtools.toolforge.org/glamorgan.html?) only provides view number of wikipedia pages that include files from a specific Commons category, and I would like to know the numbers for the images in a catagory on Wikimedia Commmons. How to declare publication and free usage permission for an uploaded photo?
An artist friend of mine who already has a wiki article would like to have his photo included in his entry. I would then upload it, since he's not registered at wikipedia. How exactly does an image filme declare that it's permitted to be used - and to whom/where? I'd like to avoid any to and fro after uploading it, so I want to get it 100% right the first time. Thanks! The trickiest part here is going to be that by default copyright belongs to the photographer, not the subject of the photo, so unless this is a selfie or other photographic self-portrait, that artist is probably not the copyright-holder. - Jmabel ! talk19:35, 17 January 2023 (UTC)

Hi Jotamide. At first glance, I would say that file isn't OK for Commons unless you can get the COM:CONSENT of it's copyright holder (e.g. the person who created the original art). Whether it's OK to upload to Spanish Wikipedia depends upon Spanish Wikipedia's policy on using fair use content; owever, Spanish Wikipedia doesn't seem to allow fair use content to be uploaded locally per COM:FAIR, which means you're back to trying to get the copyright holder's consent. -- Marchjuly (talk) 02:00, 19 January 2023 (UTC)

Go to the URL that would lead to the nonexistent category if it existed (e.g. https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:My new cat), and that will give you a page to create the category.
Add the category in one of the places you want to use it (e.g. on a file page or a child category page, [[Category:My new cat]]), and when you click that on the saved page it will take you the same place as the prior method.

I believe the image is valid for Commons but the attribution is incorrect. Editor should not be claiming own work as UCSC Genome gives clear requirements that credit must be given to the specific researchers.
There is a second image by same user File:NOXRED1 Conceptual Translation.png that may also have attribution issues.
All there image uploads should be reviewed. I believe they are not giving proper acknowledgement to copyright holders on work and claiming own work improperly. Slywriter (talk) 01:54, 19 January 2023 (UTC)

Is There A Limit to Uploading a New Version of a File?
I would like to update a specific image more than one time, but I am unsure whether I will be stopped or prevented from doing so after a numebr of updates. So is there a limit/cooldown to this? Thanks for your answer. LegendaSM07 (talk) 13:53, 20 January 2023 (UTC)
@LegendaSM07: Could you clarify what you mean here? Normally, there is no good reason to upload an identical file more than once. However, there are certain times when an overwrite with a different version is acceptable, especially when overwriting your own file. No, I didn't mean uploading an identical file more than once. The specific picture I was talking about is a map of a highway, which needs to update ocassionally as new sections of the highway are opened/under construction. So I want to upload different and edited versions of the file to make it up to date. I tried this before, but I made a design flaw so now I am thinking about uploading it again, but changed with the appropiate design elements. My question was basically, does wikipedia stop me after I update the file (with different versions) a bit too many times?
@LegendaSM07: Typically what you are describing is OK, as long as the file description indicates that it is supposed to represent the current state of the highway, not its state on a particular date. If the file description specifies that the file represents a particular point in time, don't overwrite it unless you are correcting what the situation was on that date. Also, depending on how much you are changing, it could affect the author credit. If the original uploader is still on Commons, you might want to consult with them and make sure that your changes are in accord with their intentions, since they are presumably still credited as an authoor. - Jmabel ! talk01:30, 21 January 2023 (UTC)

Image scaling
Hi,
Someone who understands image scaling, please have a look at the Rembrandt User's Guide for ETH Oberon. The picture of the Rembrandt panel is 370x226 px. At full size, it appears too large in the text. The displayed thumbnail is 220x134 px. Too small to see the details well. I can scale the picture with independent software; GIMP for example. Then upload again. Can Commons display an intermediate size more directly?
A help search for "image scaling" found advice about user recognition of image scale. Nothing about scaling to fit the display.

The flag of the Square Kilometre Array Observatory office
I am working on updating the article on the list of diplomatic missions in Australia over on Wikipedia. When I progress to the representative offices section, one office that I will add is the Square Kilometre Array Observatory office. This organisation doesn't have their own flag on Wikimedia commons, however in real life they do (see it in action here). "Permission missing" tag
Hi, I have tagged a few pictures with the "permission missing" tag, and I noticed that this tag does not automatically include the date. Instead, it seems that someone had to clean up after me manually (apologies, and thanks @ Johnj1995). Why is that, if I may ask? If you look at Template:No permission since, you will see that the directions begin with, "Note: do not transclude this template directly on a page." Additional question - just wondering: How on earth would I go about finding that page, or further information on those tags, in the first place? "Transclude" is a bit jargon-y, but it means the inclusion of one wiki page in another, usually with some processing involved. Besides the use of a template, the other main way it shows up here is every time an image or other media file is used in a page other than its own file page, but there are other uses. E.g. if you look at the source of Commons:Deletion requests/2023/01/04, you will see that it consists almost entirely of transclusions of individual deletion discussions (although at the moment I see that someone put one discussion directly in the page, probably because they tried to do something by hand that instead of using the "Nominate for deletion" button & they didn't actually know how to do that.
"how on earth…": any time you are using a template, there is always a template page of that name. The only thing like an exception I can think of is that there are a tiny number of pseudo-templates that use almost the same syntax, but have a colon rather than a vertical bar before their arguments; these are hard-coded. Examples of that last are {{DEFAULTSORT:}} and {{subst:}}. Offhand I can't think of any others.
I hope that helps. And your questions are a good reminder that a lot of things that are obvious to those of us who've been using wikis for 20+ years are not necessarily common knowledge. I'm not sure how to address that particular learning curve. Ironically, as people have built Wizards, WYSIWYG interfaces, etc., that make a lot of things easier for new users, it conversely means that fewer new users really know what is going on "under the hood," so when they need to do things that are less automated they are at a loss. @Unappreciatedinmytime: If no one but you is seeing the image, that is no problem. When you click in to look at an image at higher scale in a browser, there's no attribution there, either. Are you quite certain that the over 150 years old rule applies to building exteriors? It seems unreasonably restrictive. If it were true, I don't see how countless photos could be legal: how could you take a picture of any city or any streetscape?
Hi Markbear. I'm not sure where the figure "150 years" came from, but whether you can photograph of the exteriors of buildings, etc. most likely largely on a copyright concept known as freedom of panorama (or FOP) and how this concept is applied can vary greatly from country to country. Under US copyright law, for example, there is complete FOP for buildings and other habitable structures completed before December 1, 1990, and limited FOP for buildings completed on or after that date as explained in COM:FOP United States. So, in the US you can take a photo of a building without having to worry about infringing upon the copyright of the building's designer. Things are very different in some other countries (e.g. COM:FOP France) and the copyright held by building designers is given more protection. Since Commons only accepts content released under certain types of licenses and these licenses permit the reuse of such content for unrestricted commercial and derivative purposes, my guess was that the 150-year cutoff date was chosen because by that time any possible copyright held by a building's designer would likely be considered to be no longer valid under the copyright laws of most of the countries around the world, which means the chance of infringement is quite low. FWIW, for most people taking personal photos of buildings for strictly personal use (photo albums, social media posts or the like), FOP is probably not something that needs to be worried about. However, it can become an issue when people try to use their photos for commercial purposes or try to create derivative works using their photos and release the derivative work under licenses that don't take into consideration any possible copyright on the building's design. A photo of a 3D object is generally considered to be a derivative work in which their can be two copyrights needing consideration: the copyright of the photo and the copyright of the 3D object. While the person taking the photo owns the copyright on that photo and might be willing to release it under one of the licenses that Commons accepts, the person who created the 3D object owns the copyright on the design of the object and might not willing to release it under any such license. Since Commons wants the content it hosts to be as unencumbered by copyright restrictions as much as possible to make such content as easy to reuse as possible, the COM:CONSENT of both copyright holders is often needed for Commons to host this type of content. Of course, things are a bit more complicated because of another copyright concept called de minimis among other things, but the general governing principle when it comes to such photos is FOP. -- Marchjuly (talk) 11:41, 22 January 2023 (UTC)

I am writing to ask whether files that are marked as in the public domain, such as File:Emily Davison (Suffragette) killed by King's Horse at Derby (1913).webm, are available for re-use despite the British Pathe watermark in the top-right corner of the screen? There are many videos on Wikimedia that are labelled as in the public domain but are present on the British Pathe website, are they all truly in the public domain?
@Utahfrysauce: It is possible someone did the analysis of rights wrong on that particular image, and you are, of course, ultimately responsible for making that judgement yourself if you reuse the photo. Commons is not your lawyer! But the PD claim looks reasonable to me. SVG translation tool problems
Hi! I'm having some problems with last few SVG files translation to Slovene (all from English). Translations a) don't even show up as an option in language selector dropdown menu (ie. the one with Palatine uvula, no Slovenian amongst options) or corrupts the file (ie. map of Holy Roman Empire). Depends on whether the artist is already dead long enough, so that his works are in the public domain, which is 70 years after death in most countries. Also, if this is about ceramic tiles/mosaics outdoors at a house-wall, this might be covered by freedom-of-panorama exception, depending on the country. --Túrelio (talk) 15:44, 22 January 2023 (UTC)
Hi HeminKurdistan. I don't think you can make such an assumption simply based on the link you provided above. The image shown on that website doesn't have a visible copyright notice on it for sure, but there's no way to tell whether the website cropped the image in some way for aesthetic purposes. It also looks like the brochure has multiple pages and there's no way to know for sure whether a copyright notice appeared on one of the other pages. Ideally, it would be best to try and fine a clean unaltered image of the brochure showing all the pages to make sure there was no notice on any of them in order to be sure it's {{PD-US-no notice}}. Others might feel differently, but I don't think this would survive a deletion nomination per COM:PCP without some stronger COM:EVID showing the brochure is OK for Commons. -- Marchjuly (talk) 11:03, 28 January 2023 (UTC)

Is it okay to upload 9 Story Media's logo onto wikimedia?
I've noticed that on 9 story media's Wikipedia page, there isn't a logo. I wanted to add the logo but I had to upload it here. I looked through the rules and found that I couldn't upload their logo here. @WinterU: I presume you are referring to en:9 Story Media Group and that their logo is the stylized "9" made of triangles that I see on their site. I think that is probably above the threshold of originality for Canadian copyright ('would require "intellectual effort" and "must not be so trivial that it could be characterized as a purely mechanical exercise"') so it's probably not suitable for Commons. You could upload it directly to the English-language Wikipedia, for use only on that particular article in the English-language Wikipedia, as a non-free logo. See en:Template:Non-free logo. Or, it is possible that the consensus at Commons:Village pump/Copyright would be that this is below Canada's threshold of originality, in which case you could upload it to Commons using {{Textlogo}} in lieu of a copyright tag. Let's say I want to upload a picture from Wikimedia Commons with some minor changes (e.g. marking a certain anatomical spot in a picture to make it easier to see in a wikipedia article what spot is beeing described). I do not want to overwrite the original file. Do I have to choose the option "this is not my own work" as the major part is in fact not mine or do I have to state that it is my own work and write in the description what original file I used? Uploading illustrations from fairy tale books published before 1928 and uploaded in Archive.org and Googlebooks
I've been updating folktale and fairy tale articles in the English Wikipedia and I've been meaning to upload some artwork related to the tales to illustrate the article. Problem is, the books I want to use are uploaded to sites like Archive.org and Googlebooks, and both are public domain (one from 1923 and ca. 1884). @Monkeymoo458: No, you almost certainly cannot upload that. Commons accepts only images that are free-licensed or in the public domain. Most of what you will find on social media (and on the Internet in general) will not meet either of those criteria.
In general, if you are going to be uploading images that are not your own, and which are not very old (like 19th century or earlier), you will need to understand these concepts of free-licensing and public domain. If you don't, you'll probably just end up uploading a bunch of stufff that gets deleted. - Jmabel ! talk00:13, 24 January 2023 (UTC)
A lot of my SVGs of things like flags and seals get taken down for copyright infringement, which is understandable, I have a hard time understanding copyright law, however I have a question about particular circumstances. I have vectorized many municipal seals and flags, and they have been taken down, and some of my buddies who also edit wikimedia projects have told me it’s due to the fact that the municipal website states “All rights reserved” at the bottom of the website (not on the image of the seal or flag), which means that everything you find on the website is owned by the municipality. However I find this difficult to believe. One particular case I have a question on is the seal of Midlothian, Illinois. The website of the village only states all rights reserved, 2006-2023. Would this mean anything on it from before 2006 is not owned by the village? The village seal was adopted in 1991, and it was removed from commons but this would suggest that it is not copyrighted by the village. Thanks for any help. @Jack Ryan Morris: No, it would not. At this point under U.S. law, it is actually redundant to state "All rights reserved" at all, just a matter of pointing out a fact. Since March 1, 1989, any new work published in the U.S. that is eligible for copyright is automatically copyrighted. Commons hosts copyrighted works only if they are free-licensed.
Hello! I want to upload a screenshot of a conversation I had with a friend where they said "every time I donate to wiki I think of you" to add to my en.wiki userpage, but I wanted to make sure it wouldn't be deleted. I know users upload personal photos for their userpages all the time (I certainly have) but I wanted to double check that this would also be allowed, or would it fall under being "not educationally useful"? On the other hand, if it violates copyrights (e.g. copyrighted visual elements on the screen exceeding the de minimis threshold), then it could be deleted as a copyvio. Hi, thanks for trying! (I tried tweaking Jeff G’s syntax but that didn’t work either.) The problem is: I have a multi-image each with a caption that requires references and the multi-image also has a paragraph as a footer summarizing the pictures in the multi-image. It would be neat if the complete references appeared below the footer-caption instead of at the bottom of the page. I thought it would be easier to ask here for syntax to do it with a thumbnail, I could make that work too. One of the reasons for this is: if someone wanted to make a screenshot of the multi-image/ thumbnail, it would not include the footnotes if they’re at the bottom of the page. Upload City Proclamation

Hi LStoutGlennon. There are a couple of things about this file. First, individual letters, words or simple combinations of text aren't generally considered eligible for copyright protection under US copyright law and I'd imagine under the copyright laws of most countries around the world. However, combinations of words exhibiting some kind of creative input by the writer (e.g. books, articles, letters, etc.) can be eligible for copyright protection not on a per letter basis but as a combintation together. So, it's possible that the text of the letter is copyrighted.Next, any graphic elements found in a letter may also be eligible for copyright protection separate from the textual content of the letter. For these reasons, you can't really claim this as COM:Own work per se and release it as a license because technically you aren't the copyright holder of the letter (i.e. you're not the person who created the letter or the graphic elements located at the top). However, California is one of the few US states that has statutes on its books stating that works created by state employees as part of their official duties are considered to be within the public domain, and I believe this statute also extends down to the county and municipal levels as well. In other words, such works are by statute not eligible for copyright protection unless specifically stated otherwise. So, even though this isn't your "own work" and the {{CC-by-sa-4.0}} license you selected is not really appropriate, there's a fairly good chance that the document can be treated as {{PD-CAGov}} and is OK for Commons. Is there a way to find users here who are willing (and able) to translate between certain languages? I feel like there should be, but I can’t think of any.
Specifically, DuckDuckGo seems to think that the recently-updated caption of File:陰茎による包皮の解説用のデータ 00.jpg (a human penis) is gibberish, but maybe DuckDuckGo is just bad at translating. @Wouterhagens Some of us prefer to avoid Google services where possible. Still, I tried it via Tor and got the translation below. It’s probably not as bad as DuckDuckGo, but clearly not as good as a human.
English: This is material data of a foreskin by a man in his twenties. It can be inferred that Kito, wrapped in a bendable foreskin, is a beautiful pink color. The shaved pubic hair is considered for hygiene and does not get caught in the foreskin. The root of the penis is clearly visible, and the pulsating blood vessels are clearly visible from the root. Hi Brianjd. You can try en:Wikipedia:Translators available on English Wikipedia, though I'm not sure how current that page is. You could also try the talk page of a en:Wikipedia:WikiProject which might cover articles related to the language you need translated. There's also Category:Users by language and Category:Wikipedians by language where you might find someone to help with any translating, but again there's no way to know how current those pages are. FWIW, machine or online translations can be hit or miss; they're much better then they once were perhaps, but they're still limited in many ways. For example, the translation given above includes several romanized Japanese words that might not have been in the translation software's dictionary. "Tamabukuro" literally means "ball sack" and is sometimes used as slangy way to refer to the scrotum. "Kito(u)" lterally means "Ogre head" (based on the characters used) and is a slangy way of referring to the tip of the penis. It seems as if that term can actually be written a couple of different ways using different characters for "Ki" that are pronounced the same way. There's actually a surname that uses the same characters used above that's also pronounced "Kitou" which might possibly explain why the software simply romanized the word since it was unable to understand the context in which it was being used. -- Marchjuly (talk) 07:22, 26 January 2023 (UTC)

The Infobox only does subcategories (which can be auto-updated when people's Wikidata items get date of death added to them), not images. I'm not too sure what the best solution is here, but I think it would be good to move the images into appropriate categories about individual people where possible. Thanks. @ITookSomePhotos: I'm pretty certain that galleries like this actually preceded categories on Commons. For most purposes, categories are more useful, so they've come to dominate, and galleries have been (sadly, in my view) neglected. Here are a few examples of much better galleries: Seattle, Places of worship in Seattle, Romanian Orthodox churches in Bucharest. As you can see, there is a lot that you can do with this that can't be done with categories. (Small enough "galleries", up to maybe a dozen or so photos, can by built directly on a category page instead of having a separate gallery page, but beyond that it becomes really unwieldy and counterproductive to the normal use of the category.) - Jmabel ! talk17:30, 21 January 2023 (UTC)

I don't reasonably expect it would be subject to any copyright claims or controversy, but I couldn't find any CC licensing terms on the General Assembly's webpage, nor on the profile/biography page of this member. I believe it to be exempt from copyright since it's produced by the state government for public consumption.

The current picture that is on the English Wikipedia is about 18 months old, which doesn't seem outdated to me. It won't be "in the public domain" even if they wish it to be (though CC-0 is pretty close too that). Hi, I think this may be a rather unusual case but does anyone happen to know how copyrights work on movie props? I own quite a few screen-used props in my collection, such as Mr Tumnus's letter used in The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, casino chips from Ocean's Eleven and Elvis, and photographs of Helen Mirren taken for a scene in The Clearing but not shown in the final cut. Some of them are recognisable, sure, but most are inconspicuous and generic enough that one can hardly tell which film they are from without knowledge of their provenances (for instance, the said letter from Narnia is littered with indecipherable gibberish). So, could I, for example, scan one of such prop documents and use the image to illustrate the film's article? Or should I consider them copyrighted just as much as the films themselves are? I don't think there is any difference between things made for a film and things made for other reasons (I might be wrong, IANAL). I'd love to have them here, though, and Wikipedias allowing fair use may be interested. Some of the props may not have any copyright because of being utility objects or of a simple or generic enough design, but still interesting because of their history. Things made as copies of some well-known object may not have a copyright of their own, and the copyright of the original may have expired. –LPfi (talk) 11:35, 28 January 2023 (UTC)
In the first week after upload, you can ask an admin for a courtesy deletion. You cannot delete uploaded fotos. The license you choose for your upload cannot be revoked. How to add an image from Wikipedia English to Wikipedia french ? (That image is in Wikimedia Commons)

On Wikipedia English, there is an very good image, so i want to put it, on the same page, in Wikipedia French.
How to do that, in the appropriate way, with respect of the author, and rules of Wikimedia ?
1) I would download the file, from Wikipedia English, then upload it to that same page on Wikipedia french.
But i am not the author of the image. So, in the upload wizard, i would tick "Not my own work".
Then in the Source input, i would put the URL of the image, in Wikimedia.
Is there something else that i should do?
2) Is there a direct way ?
Since the image is already in Wikimedia, is it possible to simply put the URL of the Wikimedia's image,
directly in the code of the Wikipedia page, where i want it to appear ?

Hi Isabeau777. If you can provide the name of file, then it might be easier for someone to give you a more specific answer. Commons is a global project and images uploaded to it can, in principle, be used on any of the local Wikipedias like English Wikipedia, French Wikipedia, German Wikipedia, etc. as well as any other WMF project; however, each individual project may have its own policies and guidelines regarding image use that is separate from Commons policy. So, you will need to make sure the way you want to use the image complies with the image use policies and guidelines of French Wikipedia.If the image you want to use has already been uploaded to Commons, then it should be fairly simple to add the image to the page where you want to use it from a technical standpoint; you just need to add the image's file syntax to the page. There are some different ways this can be done depending on how and where the image is going to be used, but there should also be information about this somewhere on French Wikipedia.On the other hand, things get a bit more complicated if the file you want to use was uploaded locally to English Wikipedia because those files can only be used on English Wikipedia. In order to use the file on French Wikipedia, you will need to either (1) upload the file to Commons or (2) upload the file to French Wikipedia. You have to be very careful here because many files uploaded locally to English Wikipedia are licensed as non-free content and these files can't be uploaded to Commons per COM:FAIR. So, if the English Wikipedia file is non-free content, you will need to upload it locally to French Wikipedia. I'm not very familiar with French Wikipedia, but English Wikipedia's policy on non-free content is very restrictive. First, you're going to have to determine whether French Wikipedia allows non-free content to be uploaded and used. If it doesn't, then there's most likely no way you'll be able to use the image on French Wikipedia. If it does, you're going to have to figure what French Wikipedia's policy on non-free content use is and then assess whether the way you want to use the file will satisfy that policy. Do we have a template that can show a file remains in copyright in one country while we have retained the file due to simultaneous publication in the US? If not, could you suggest any similar templates I could use as a base to create a new one?

Hard to say. Personally, I've never been happy about those "cosplay" categories, because they make an assumption about the motivation of the people depicted. I've seen them applied (for example) to costumed people in parades from before that term was even invented. As an illustrative hypothetical, if a friend of mine takes a picture with his camera, and then fully gifts that picture to me (with all its intellectual/creator rights), does Wikimedia Commons accept that albeit i was not the creator of the picture, I am nevertheless the owner of it and that I am free to be the one donate and upload the picture to Wikimedia Commons?
And, if the answer is yes, in the upload process do I select the option "This is my own work"? Hi Al83tito. In principle, the person taking the photo is considered to be the copyright holder of the photo and they can transfer their copyright to others if they want. In your example, your friend is the original copyright holder since they took the picture with their camera (in most cases it doesn't even seem to matter whose camera they use to take the photo), and they then can transfer their copyright ownership to you if they want. So, you could upload that photo to Commons since you are now the copyright holder of the photo even though you didn't take the photo yourself per Commons:But it's my own work!. However, you would also be expected to be able to back up your claim per COM:EVID, particularly if the photo has been published somewhere prior to it being uploaded to Commons. If after you upload the photo someone felt your claim of copyright ownership was a bit sketchy, more formal verification of your copyright ownership may be requested. Simply saying that your friend took the photo and then gave it too you as a gift might not be considered sufficient; you may be asked to provide something in writing like a en:copyright transfer agreement or have your friend send in a COM:CONSENT email for license verification purposes. -- Marchjuly (talk) 11:33, 28 January 2023 (UTC)

I'm sorry but I don't know the answer to that question. However, whatever you chose can always be changed after the file has been uploaded. Hi Gråbergs Gråa Sång. A screenshot from C-Span isn't automatically {{PD-USGov}} because it's from C-Span, but in this case this might be OK because it appears to be a screenshot from a en:Senate Judiciary Committee hearing per the source, which would seem to be covered as a "Congressional commitee hearing" per the C-Span license page you linked to above. However, there is a possible rub and that has to do with the location of the hearing. The hearing took place at the en:Dirksen Senate Office Building and not the actual en:United States Senate chamber. That in an of itself could be all that's needed as a reason the file can't be kept as licensed. It might seem like a trivial distinction to make perhaps, but it might be enough. If it does turn out that this file is OK for Commons, then there might be a more specific license like {{PD-USGov-Congress}} or even {{PD-CSPAN}} that should be used instead of "PD-USGov". -- Marchjuly (talk) 12:02, 28 January 2023 (UTC)

@Gråbergs Gråa Sång: You might want to take a look at COM:VPC#PD-CSPAN question since the location of the hearing does matter because the cameras used to film hearings with the US House and US Senate chambers are apparently owned by the US federal government and operated by US government federal employees. C-Span just broadcasts the feed it has access to from the cameras and it adds it logo to that feed. Even though I’m quite sure the content is in the public domain as it’s a 1800 book, I noted that I’ve used the {{PD-old-100-expired}} template instead of the {{PD-scan|PD-old-100-expired}}. Since I wanted to be more precise, but considering the fact that editing manually 150+ pages is impracticable, is there any way to automate this process? Hi, I've recently found a video on here called "The Devil Bat". I've recently gotten into adding subtitles to it, but the media player that opens the video isn't very precise, it doesn't measure the milliseconds, different from the SubScript text thing it offers to use to add subtitles.

The authors are incognito persons in occupied war zones or under court witness protection, but the images are in public use. Is it allowed to upload such images? Hello! I'm an admin from SqWiki and my community is recently preparing to set up a photo-contest about food pictures in Commons, something we did last year too.
I'm having some problems while creating the needed technical infrastructure for such a project.
For example, I'm failing to see why the jury subpage in here (switch to English) doesn't exist even though it actually does. Its name was recently changed because of a typo (the page dot moved) and I fixed the link after but it still remembers the old link somehow. I thought it could be a caching problems but 2 days have gone by and it hasn't changed. I don't know what I'm missing.
Another problem is about the subpage where the images are supposed to be collected, a category page: Category:Traditional Albanian food photography competition - 2023. I'm not sure how to mark it for translation. I tried translating its header subpage but nothing changed.
Jmabel, exactly. The page was in the wrong namespace, being on the main one. User Jameslwoodward sent it in the Commons namespace (Link) as it should be and I changed the /Nënfaqet subpage to work with the new link (the same + Commons in front). But it still "remembers" the old one and it says that the page doesn't exist. Is it a bit more clear now? I found this Category with two files and another inappropriately named Category with just over 400 files. All of them are good quality contributions related to food. Checking a few of the images in the category, they look well categorized (typically 3 or 4 appropriate categories), and this particular category was marked as a user category. The only thing wrong was that this user category was that you made it a child of topical categories, which shouldn't be the case, so I removed those parent categories.
By the way, moves like this are absolutely counterproductive. Users are allowed to have user categories to keep track of their own work, and in general other users should not be messing with those.

The category was created by another user (not the uploader) who created it as a subcategory of a topical category with the name of the uploader as the sort key. The linked edit, by splitting that hybrid category into the topical category and the user category, looks like a rather reasonable and logical attempt at fixing that situation. @Asclepias: given that the category was not made by the user in question (which I hadn't noticed) the situation was a bit weirder than I thought. But, conversely, this wasn't really "split". It's true that Category:Cuisine of Karachi (already their) is more specific than the "Pubjab" side of that category, so no info lost, but if I had made a category like that for my work -- splitting out the files I did on a certain topic -- I wouldn't want another user turning it into a generic category that said nothing more than that it is my work. Putting this in the tree of topical categories in the first place was not good either (we'd only want to do that if the photographer were notable, e.g. Category:Navajo people as photographed by Edward Curtis, and even there the name isn't the greatest), but it would have been a lot better to turn it into a personal/hidden category than to merge it. - Jmabel ! talk00:09, 1 February 2023 (UTC)

Hi Jeff, the map was drawn by a government surveyor over a century ago, and so I understand is out of copyright. (A National Library of Australia entry says, "Maps published in or before 1954 are free of copyright".) The map in question is freely available for download, and so I have entered a link in the entry I made. ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sea_Lake#cite_note-8 ) But the map itself is not on display, so I cannot make a link to the image itself. Unfortunately, Alarmy (and Getty Images) sometimes engage in false statements of copyright of media which are clearly legally Public Domain. See en:w:Copyfraud. I know. But you don't take it off and rebrand it your own so that you can prevent others from use it freely.
It's ok to make your own version out of it but to take the original out completely for your own gain is greed.
I think the next thing to include in the licensing of a PD is to leave a note that the original can me copied, remodeled but can't be taken out completely for personal gain.
For God's sake, someone put their work there to benefit others and a greedy one comes and claim ownership. That's not smart!
