This file may be deleted.
A file that you have uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, File:Simeon Prior's handwritten account of his service during the American Revolution.jpg, is a derivative work, containing an "image within an image". Examples of such works would include a photograph of a sculpture, a scan of a magazine cover, or a map that has been altered from the original. In each of these cases, the rights of the creator of the original must be considered, as well as those of the creator of the derivative work.

While the description page states who made this derivative work, it currently doesn't specify who created the original work, so the overall copyright status is unclear. If you did not create the original work depicted in this image, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright.

Please edit the file description and add the missing information, or the file may be deleted. If you created the original content yourself, enter this information as the source. If someone else created the content, the source should be the address to the web page where you found it, the name and ISBN of the book you scanned it from, or similar. You should also name the author, provide verifiable information to show that the content is in the public domain or has been published under a free license by its author, and add an appropriate template identifying the public domain or licensing status, if you have not already done so. Please add the required information for this and other files you have uploaded before adding more files. If you need assistance, please ask at the help desk. Thank you!

Xunks. Thank you for your thoughts. I own both the original documents all of which are older than 1850 and the image of the documents, of which I personally scanned or took a photo. The images that you have marked as derivative are in the public domain. So, I own the originals as part of The Prior Family Archive that has been passed down to me over the past 7 generations and I scanned the images and am sharing the copyright of the images I took.
So, are these truly derivative? Kclarke.enteract (talk) 13:49, 12 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
You should fix the description. Use {{Own scan}} instead of {{Own}} for the source. The date should be the date of the original document. And also fix the author. Yann (talk) 16:38, 18 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Yann Is this an option in the Upload wizard? Maybe this possibility could be better specified when one is uploading a file with the upload wizard. I conservatively estimate that there exist tens of thousands of files that have an own source where as Xunx or you demand an other source.Paradise Chronicle (talk) 17:40, 18 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
You have to choose "Not my own work", then you have more options. Yann (talk) 18:54, 18 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Is there a way to update this without editing the code? Also, what if the document is a legal document where the authorship is unclear. It should also be known that I own the original public domain documents and I scanned the images. Does this change anything? Kclarke.enteract (talk) 19:58, 18 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
If I choose not my own work, there are options but not the ones for why the file was tagged for deletion. I uploaded one but this is also not the wanted one by Xunx. Xunx wanted me to add the field Artist separately and additional to my mention work...by ... that it was an etching by and based on an other artist was present in the description of the file, but not under Artist which is not listed as an option but under description which is an option. Then the file had a license with the death year of 1776 mentioned.
In his so called derivative notices it is mentioned that I need to update the essential information on source and licensing. All was present. I took the photograph and I uploaded it. License was present in most of the files. Paradise Chronicle (talk) 21:43, 18 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
A little correction, the death year of 1776 was added only after it was tagged, but a quick double check on who the original artists are (which where mentioned at the time of the tag), would have made it pretty clear that the file is in the public domain. What if the document is a land deed from 1782 and the author is unknown? Kclarke.enteract (talk) 22:17, 18 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
