"other version" not showing

For File:The Alaska-Yukon-Pacific exposition, and Seattle the beautiful exposition city (1909) (14762500034).jpg the third "other version" isn't showing. Can anyone work out what's going on? - Jmabel ! talk 03:36, 2 September 2022 (UTC)

@Jmabel: What's happening is you've got two "other versions" parameters, one before the "other fields" and one after. The first one contains two {{Other version}} templates, and the second contains three. If you merge them into a single parameter (or simply delete the one you don't want), it will be displayed properly. --bjh21 (talk) 10:09, 2 September 2022 (UTC)

Can images from TN.gov be uploaded to Commons, and if so, under what license?

The linking policy on TN.gov states "The information posted on a TN.gov Web site may be copied so long as it is presented in a non-misleading way and does not imply that either the site owner or the information, as it is presented on the site owner's Web site, is endorsed by the State. Use of the information must identify the state agency that is the source of the information, and the agency's Web address." Given that the image is from a TN.gov website and the terms are followed, are images from TN.gov good to upload on Commons? RyuJV (talk) 00:35, 6 September 2022 (UTC)

@RyuJV: Hi, and welcome. Those are non-copyright restrictions. The information is still copyrighted, as Tennessee's state government is not exempt from US federal copyright laws, and as such we still need permission via VRT.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 00:50, 6 September 2022 (UTC)

Incorrectly captioned file

I want to use this Commons file https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Ruth_Page_and_Harald_Kreutuzberg_in_Bacchanale,_1934_(NBY_6802).jpg but there are two errors in the caption. The male dancer’s last name is spelled “Kreutzberg” and the ballet portrayed is Country Dance not Bacchanale.

The same photo, correctly captioned, is Figure 4.1 in Joellen A. Meglin’s book Ruth Page: The Woman in the Work, p. 98. Can you please fix? Thanks. Feralpearl (talk) 12:06, 7 September 2022 (UTC)

Minimum images in cat

Hi, Do we have any guidelines that say how many images minimum should be in a category ?, Thanks, –Davey2010Talk 14:34, 1 September 2022 (UTC)

@Davey2010: I'm not sure there's any official guidance, but I've somehow absorbed "three" as the answer to this. Sometimes I'll create a category for a single file. For instance, I created a bunch of single-file subcategories of Category:Potato cultivars by name because I couldn't otherwise see a good parent category to put the files in. --bjh21 (talk) 14:48, 1 September 2022 (UTC)
Hi @Bjh21, Ah okay, Currently I'm creating one-file categories for some of the vehicles at Category:Mercedes-Benz buses in the United Kingdom but I would assume for instance having this is better than having a whole ton of unidentified images dumped at Category:Mercedes-Benz buses in the United Kingdom?,
For instance now the Wright category above has been created viewers will now find that image either through Mercedes-Benz or Wright categories and more importantly will actually know what the vehicle is whereas at Mercedes-Benz buses in the United Kingdom it'll never be found and chances are the image descriptions wont ever be read,
I've also just realised my logic has also applied to Category:Potato cultivars by name as viewers will also know what potato cultivars they are .... whereas being dumped in one huge category doesn't really help anybody,
Brilliant thanks for your help bjh much appreciated, Thanks, –Davey2010Talk 15:14, 1 September 2022 (UTC)
Probably reasonable in this case. Similarly, we often create a category that corresponds to a Wikipedia article, even if there is only one item in the category. - Jmabel ! talk 15:22, 1 September 2022 (UTC)
I will create a Commons category with only one image if I think there is a good chance of more images being added in the future. The easier it is for uploaders to categorise images correctly the better. I've recently gone through 13,000 aviation images where many were not even categorised by the main subject. Wikipedia categories are generally created with three or more 'blue linked' articles, navboxes need five articles though there are many categories and templates with less than this number. The photo you tried to upload is smaller, and you indicated it's your own work. Usually when someone uploads a smaller photo, it is a copyright violation taken from the web. If you took the photo yourself, please upload the full-size original of it per COM:HR, including EXIF metadata. If you did not take the photo, please see Commons:Licensing for why we can't accept it, and have the photographer post permission on their official website or social media or send the photo and permission via VRT with a carbon copy to you. @Jeff G. and Edward X. Peterson: Jeff, I realize that was boilerplate, but it's not so much whether Edward took the photo: all of A.D.M. Cooper's copyrights should have expired by now, and a faithful copy of a painting of his should be eligible for Commons as {{PD-US-expired}}. - Jmabel ! talk 22:29, 1 September 2022 (UTC)
@Jmabel: Right, but uploading a smaller (529 × 469 pixels, 104873 bytes) jpg photo of it cross-wiki is the wrong way about it. en:File:International Judo Federation Flag.png – Received authorization to use

I've uploaded the image file as a non-free file. Since, I was mailed an authorization to use the image file on Wikipedia, for purposes detailed in the "Minimal use" section. My question is: How can I provide this authorization to Wikipedia, so that the file may be used on the site? CLalgo (talk) 10:09, 2 September 2022 (UTC)

Looks like the file needs to be used in the article(s) stated and per "Minimal use" included in articles of said athletes. If the file isn't used anywhere, Wikipedia cannot keep it as it would be copyright violation. The article in question does use another version, which is simply the logo itself, not the flag. Not sure about what you should do in this case. You should ask on the file's talk page. Polda18 (discussioncontributions) 10:44, 2 September 2022 (UTC)
Commons doesn't accept non-free content of any type per COM:FAIR; so, there's not really anything Commons can do to help you with this. Since you asked essentially the same question at en:WP:MCQ#File:International Judo Federation Flag.png – Received authorization to use, it's probably best to keep all discussion related to this in that thread since it will avoid confusion. -- Marchjuly (talk) 14:11, 2 September 2022 (UTC)

YouTube Audio Library licence

Hello, I'm fairly new to commons, so apologies if the answer was right in front of me or something.

I'm attempting to upload a music track from the YouTube Audio Library which falls under a YouTube Audio Library licence. I can't find a template for such a license. Does one exist?

The track is also apparently licensed under CC BY 3.0, however I still feel the YouTube Audio Library licence should be mentioned on the file page, since it is also a free license.

Any help with this would be greatly appreciated. - Toast for Teddy (talk) 19:08, 2 September 2022 (UTC)

@Toast for Teddy: Is there such a thing as a "YouTube Audio Library licence"? There is "YouTube Audio Library", but the other thing you link doesn't really look like a proper license. Much like the "public domain mark" on Flickr, it seems more like an assertion that the material can be used either because it is public domain or under some license. On Commons, we don't usually accept claims of PD without a rationale, though at least in this case their users can't just arbitrarily add it themselves. Does it allow derivative works? I for one can't tell by reading anything there. I'd be inclined to stick with {{Cc-by-3.0}} because its terms are clear. - Jmabel ! talk 20:04, 2 September 2022 (UTC)
YouTube Audio Library License is something new to me. Yes I know there is YT Audio Library which has tons of music that is copyright safe (and if you use it with built-in tool, it gives automatic attribution), but if there is such proprietary free license on YouTube to use the music, Commons most certainly doesn't have that license. It definitely helps if the work is licensed under multiple licenses, which therefore lets you to simply pick one, so if the track you want to upload is licensed under CC BY 3.0, then use {{Cc-by-3.0}} and that's it. Commons doesn't have any kind of YouTube's proprietary licenses. Polda18 (discussioncontributions) 20:12, 2 September 2022 (UTC)

@Jeff G.: . I am not so familiar with the metadata, but I gave the correct references to the book where the image was originally published, and a link to the website, where you can find that book online. I assume that can go as the metadata. In the moment there is a link to the website of the Metropolitan Museum of New York, and that is simply wrong.Udimu (talk) 15:24, 2 September 2022 (UTC)

Template request

In 2020 there was a extensive reform of administrative divisions in Ukraine with the consequence that in all oblasts (regions) the raions (districts) were redefined (partially merged, partially split). For more information see w:Raions of Ukraine. In the English WP, one user is currently working on an update; Wikidata is not updated yet. The problem spans into quite a number of categories in the Wikimedia Commons, too. We probably won't be able to fix this quickly, but I would like to suggest at least a template in order to tag both the affected meta categories (like Category:Churches in Ukraine by raion) and the affected subcategories (like Category:Churches in Turka Raion). If I weren't a technical dummy, I would create such a template (“outdated categories” or similar, possibly with a parameter for individual text like “administration reform in Ukraine, 2020” or similar) myself. Can the community help? Stilfehler (talk) 17:41, 13 September 2022 (UTC)

For instance, {{CatDevelop}}? Ruslik (talk) 20:37, 13 September 2022 (UTC)
I hadn't seen that one, yes it could be used for that purpose. The only two reservations that I have is 1. that as a Commons dummy I don't know whether it wouldn't be practical to have something more specific that not only tags a need of maintenance but also allows for easy access to all categories that are in need of this specific maintenance. 2. We also have hundreds of raion-related categories, if not thousands, so giving an explanation (as this template requires) on each discussion page would be a real pain (unless a bot would do this). @Stilfehler: If the explanation will be the same on all of them, you could make a more specific template that makes use of {{CatDevelop}}. - Jmabel ! talk 22:42, 13 September 2022 (UTC)
Thanks, that sounds good. Is there anybody whom I can ask to help since I never created a template that is up to Commons standards (which seem to include translation) and the source code kind of scares me? Stilfehler (talk) 23:39, 13 September 2022 (UTC)
I wouldn't worry at first about making the template multilingual; if you build the basic thing you need, someone else can do the rework to make it multilingual if they find it worth the effort. - Jmabel ! talk 01:36, 14 September 2022 (UTC)

Category

I am trying to upload File:Sydney Life City Church 001B.jpg to Category:Sydney Life City Church, Gladesville. It appears to have been uploaded but does not show up in the category. Sardaka (talk) 10:56, 14 September 2022 (UTC)

I can see the file in that category just fine, however the category page itself doesn't exist (hence why it is red). Maybe purge the cache? Polda18 (discussioncontributions) 11:08, 14 September 2022 (UTC)
And now I found out the reason why. Turns out the actual category is Category:Sydney LIfe City Church, Gladesville (notice the capital I in the word "Life", I guess somebody didn't quite pay attention to typos). I might suggest redirecting the category with the typo to the correct name. Polda18 (discussioncontributions) 11:28, 14 September 2022 (UTC)
So I renamed the category, redirect was made automatically. Bot will then check the category and move the files in the old category to the new category. Once that is done, the old category can be removed completely. Polda18 (discussioncontributions) 12:07, 14 September 2022 (UTC)
Files moved from the old category to the new one, and old category was marked for speedy deletion. Polda18 (discussioncontributions) 12:25, 14 September 2022 (UTC)

NEED WIKIPEDIA PAGE

Hello all,

This is Bizhan Shaban. I'll summarize everything here, I'm a social media influencer on instagram with over 10k followers I have more than 10 articles about me on the internet. I'm looking to get Wikipedia page for myself if there is anyone who is willing to help please let me know I'd be grateful for that. Bizhanshaban32 (talk) 07:53, 7 September 2022 (UTC)

You are looking for a Facebook-page. Wikipedia is not for self-promotion. --Túrelio (talk) 09:27, 7 September 2022 (UTC)
Somebody might make a Wikipedia article about you if such article meets the encyclopedic notability requirement (that means at least 2 mutually independent sources have something about you, and those sources shouldn't be dependent on the subject of the article - best example is a newspaper article), of course such article should be well sourced (informations should be verifiable, thus article also needs to meet the verifiability requirement). Keep in mind that Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, not a social media platform. Articles should be written with neutral point of view in mind. If there is a verifiable information about you online or anywhere in printed sources, eighter positive or critical towards you, chances are it should be in the article. Wikipedia isn't a place for self promotion, Wikipedia is a place for education. We do not use Wikipedia for every day social interactions. How Can I Confirm My Gmail

How Can I Confirm My Email Or Gmail and Unfortunately I added my picture to another category help me to delete that picture and to confirm my gmail Dharma Teja Karri (talk) 11:14, 7 September 2022 (UTC)

About confirming your Email: Usually you receive an email that asks you to click a link for confirmation. It sounds riddiculous to advice clicking a link in an email when things like phishing exist, but if you pay close attention to where the email originates from and the actual link destination (believe it or not, link text can be faked, always look to the status bar for the actual link - just hover over it, don't click it and see where it goes - once you're sure the link is legit, click it - pay attention to the domain). That confirmation email is usually sent right after registration, give it couple of seconds to arrive in your inbox, so clicking the link should be relatively safe. That should confirm your email address you registered with. If you didn't receive it in your inbox, check spam folder (sometimes confirmation emails are falsely flagged as spam, it's rare, but it happens), if you can't find it even there, check if you've registered with a correct email (check for typo, etc.) - you should see your email used for registration in your account settings on Commons. Changing the email sends new verification email into the new one, so you can repeat the process.
About bad categorization: If you know the correct category, you can correct your mistake by editing the file description page, categories are down at the end of the page - just edit your mistake there. Or alternatively you can use HotCat tool to edit the categories. Click the double plus symbol (++) before the categories and change the category you want to remove to the correct one. If you wish, we can correct it for you. Just tell us the file name (ideally link to it by [[:File:Example.png]] where Example.png is the name of the file - notice the colon before File - it should result in this: File:Example.png), and the name of the category that needs removing from the file, and which category is the correct one. @AmirMehdiKazmi: Hi, and welcome. I am sorry to inform you that you have triggered Special:AbuseFilter/153 by trying to cross-wiki upload a smaller (<50,000 bytes or <2,000,000 pixels) jpg photo as a new user while leaving the summary intact and Special:AbuseFilter/156 by trying to upload a smaller (<50,000 bytes) jpg photo as a new user. The photo you tried to upload is smaller, and you indicated it's your own work. Usually when someone uploads a smaller photo, it is a copyright violation taken from the web. If you took the photo yourself, please upload the full-size original of it per COM:HR, including EXIF metadata. If you did not take the photo, please see Commons:Licensing for why we can't accept it as-is, and have the photographer post Commons:Licensing compliant permission for such work on their website or social media presence or send the photo and permission via VRT with a carbon copy to you. If you can't get a compliant license, the photo may still be uploaded to English Wikipedia in compliance with en:WP:F because we don't allow Fair Use here. If you change the summary or use our Upload Wizard instead, you should be able to avoid filter 153. Policy on nearly duplicate photos

I'm relatively new and I'm chiefly here to upload my own photos of archaeological sites and museum collections for teaching purposes. But while I'm doing that I've also been trying to do a little maintenance as well (distributing files to correct categories, flagging copyvio, etc.) I know that exact duplicate images should be tagged so that one of them can be deleted, but I'm unsure about Commons policy regarding a series of photos that are virtually duplicates, taken at the same time by the same person from the same angle with almost (but not quite exactly) the same framing? Example:

These are clearly different photographs, but none of them contains information that the others do not, and the differences are so slight that it seems to me that the project would be perfectly well served by retaining one of them and nominating the others for deletion. Or is the fact that they are technically different photos which do not violate any other Commons policy mean that it's none of my business and I should just leave them alone? Thanks. -- Choliamb (talk) 13:13, 7 September 2022 (UTC)

  • @Choliamb: We probably could have done with one or two of these, but once they are there, there is no point to deleting (and even discussing this wastes time and effort). Commons never does a "hard delete", so it saves no space on disk. If the same user habitually did uploads like this, it might be worth discussing with them. - Jmabel ! talk 15:14, 7 September 2022 (UTC)
Thanks, Jmabel. That makes sense, especially if there is no way to reclaim the space after a delete, and any discussion of deletion just uses up more space! I suppose the same goes for out-of-scope images like holiday photos that would be fine on social media, but have no apparent educational value? I'm thinking of photos like these:
The user evidently just uploaded all of the photos from his visit to the ancient agora in Athens, without discrimination. Many of them are good, useful images, but some, like the ones listed here, seem to be nothing but pictures of other people in the tour group, listening to the tour guide. Strictly speaking, I would expect these to be deleted in accordance with COM:EDUSE and COM:PARTYPICS. But I won't waste my time tagging them if the general consensus is that they are not a serious problem, and that anyone interested in improving the Commons can spend their time better on other matters. Hi,

The usage of 2 Jeno's pizza cards has recently been queried in an FA review. There are about 50 of these cards on Wikimedia, dating back to 2017. They're probably in use on well over 100 Wikipedia articles, so it's worth establishing whether they can be used or not.

(My user name for this account is VJAnderson.) 97.113.228.215 21:41, 7 September 2022 (UTC)

Hello. Since user accounts are globally handled across all Wikimedia projects, I'm afraid there is nothing we can do here. Please see meta:Help:Compromised accounts for instructions. In a nutshell, you need to contact ca@wikimedia.org if you cannot log in as a result of compromise. De728631 (talk) 21:50, 7 September 2022 (UTC)
I'll add some little additional info as well. Once your access is reinstated under your new email, make sure to enable 2FA (two factor authentication) if available. If not, I would consider using another service that does provide 2FA (like Gmail, Hotmail, etc.) and enable 2FA, ideally through a smartphone app (like Google Authenticator) - do not use SMS verification for 2FA. Also make sure to download backup codes in case you lose access to your verification device, which in turn lets you disable 2FA temporarily or replace your settings with a new device. Keep those backup codes safe, make sure you have access to them whenever possible. In addition, I'd consider using a password manager. Not the one built in your browser (disable that function), I'm talking about 3rd party password managers, like LastPass, KeePass, OnePass or Bitwarden (I'm using Bitwarden). Password manager lets you generate a random strong password and you don't have to remember it, the manager remembers it for you. The only passwords you need to know is the one for your device OS (Windows, Linux, etc.) and the one for the password manager, because you need to unlock encrypted database of your passwords if you need to use it. The only 2 passwords you need to know are those as it protects access to your device and your passwords database. Mediawiki software should also support 2FA over an authenticator app, so you can protect also your Wikipedia account. In addition to password managing, some password managers also provide a way to manage OTP codes, which makes 2FA authentication possible, and also banking informations, like your credit cards. The upload wizard won't accept it, and I didn't understand the instructions about how to get permission. How can I get permission to upload the file? Bubba73 (talk) 02:19, 9 September 2022 (UTC)

@Bubba73: Hi, and welcome. I am sorry to inform you that you have triggered Special:AbuseFilter/192 by trying to upload an mp3 file with insufficient rights. Too many people try to upload audio files that are still copyrighted by the authors, performers, recorders, publishing companies, etc. without proper licenses from those people. Please document fully the sources and licenses of your audio uploads, and request Autopatrol group membership at COM:RFR when you think you are ready (once you have made more than 500 useful non-botlike edits); having that should allow you to upload mp3 files. Until then, you may reencode the audio into Vorbis or Opus and upload it with full documentation as an .ogg or .oga file (or use any other format accepted per COM:FT#Sound).   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 02:54, 9 September 2022 (UTC)

This is my first Wikipedia image upload. It's a public domain image in the UK (>70yrs past publication, never mind creation). He is a public figure and the article I've used it at 1955 United Kingdom general election can reasonably be described as informing or educating the public... in my non-professional legal opinion. There are few images of this public figure available now, 71 years after it was taken and 51 after his death.

Am I lost? Thank-you.

--Blether (talk) 05:59, 10 September 2022 (UTC)

The copyright status depends on the time the photographer died, not the time the photographed person died. See UK copyright chart and Commons:Copyright rules by territory/United_Kingdom. -- Juergen 86.111.155.219 13:45, 10 September 2022 (UTC)

EXIF Data recovery

I accidentally deleted a photograph which I took from the same device where I deleted it. When I restored the photo, I saw it has lost its former EXIF data. I was planning to upload that photo here at Commons. Now, how shall I recover the exif data? That device is a mobile phone of Xiaomi company. Please somebody help me! --Haoreima (talk) 13:08, 10 September 2022 (UTC)

Which software did you use to restore the photo?
If you used some photo recovery software that only read the original media, scanned for traces of JPEG data and saved the restored photo to another media, the original media may have been untouched since the deletion.
In this case, you may be able to use another software that does not scan for JPEG data and create a new JPEG file from it (without the EXIF data), but instead undeletes the file as such independent of its contents. This way, you may be able to undelete the same photo again, but this time unmodified and thus including the EXIF data.
But if the software you used did write to the original media, it may be impossible to undelete the photo again using some other method. Recovery of the EXIF data is probably impossible in this case. -- Juergen 86.111.155.219 13:38, 10 September 2022 (UTC)
@Haoreima Images with EXIF data are of course desirable. However, it is also OK to upload images without EXIF data. You can also enter the essential data manually in the image description page. If it is important to you that the file has EXIF data, the following is also possible: With an EXIF editing programme you extract the EXIF data of the picture you took immediately before or after the picture. Remove the incorrect data from the extracted data and add the edited EXIF data to the image with the editing programme. C.Suthorn (talk) 09:17, 11 September 2022 (UTC)

Category:Leptodictyum riparium linking to wrong Wikidata item in infobox

Hi there, I'm wondering how to get the infobox on Category:Leptodictyum riparium to display the correct taxon data. Currently Leptodictyum riparium links to the Wikidata item, and the infobox for Category:Leptodictyum riparium shows data from Hypnum riparium (Q17289678), a synonym of the taxon (and even after unlinking it and redirecting a Vietnamese wiki page, its still being displayed). --Prosperosity (talk) 01:50, 9 September 2022 (UTC)

@Prosperosity: Right now, Hypnum riparium (Q17289678) explicitly links Category:Leptodictyum riparium in two places (as Commons category and as an interwiki link to "Multilingual site" Commons). So of course that's the infobox that shows for the category. - Jmabel ! talk 03:15, 9 September 2022 (UTC)
@Jmabel: Ah, it seems like the commons cat was still there, so a bot relinked the category and the wikidata item after I'd deleted it. I've removed both now, but the category is still displaying the wrong Wikidata info in the infobox. --Prosperosity (talk) 03:55, 9 September 2022 (UTC)
@Prosperosity: I made this edit for you, and now the right category shows up.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 04:21, 9 September 2022 (UTC)
@Jeff G.: Thank you! I thought that if a commons category had a page (like this plant does), then that was what the Wikidata item should link to. --Prosperosity (talk) 05:34, 9 September 2022 (UTC)
@Mike Peel: May we have both (cat and gallery linking to the same Wikidata item seamlessly)?   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 15:57, 9 September 2022 (UTC)
@Prosperosity and Jeff G.: Sorry for the slow response, I've been on vacation. The answer is yes, you have to create a second 'category' Wikidata item and link it to the 'topic' item, like this: Category:Leptodictyum riparium (Q113958241) & [2]. Thanks. Mike Peel (talk) 19:41, 13 September 2022 (UTC)

Using Wikimedia Commens as Backend for OpenSource Project

Hello, so I am currently working on a project which displays all AED's in Switzerland on a web-map. Since this is a Open Source project the idea was to also make the images public. The images captures the location of the AED which is later displayed in a Popup. So my Question is: 1. Is it possible to use this Platform as a backend ? 2. Does this Platform Provide an API which allows me to uploed and downloed images ? Best regards Ahmad 2003:CB:AF29:E71C:CC83:D791:4FF7:8E43 19:04, 13 September 2022 (UTC)

1: What you can use Commons for is set out in Commons:Project scope. The important requirements are that the files "Must be freely licensed or public domain" and "Must be realistically useful for an educational purpose". The first I assume wouldn't be a problem for you. "Educational" is treated pretty broadly, so I think you'd be OK there as well. I've recently set up a bot tracking the 124,000 Commons:Files used on OpenStreetMap and this seems fairly similar. Indeed, I wonder if you might be able to integrate this with OpenStreetMap.
2: Commons does have an API. Several in fact, but I'd suggest using the one documented at mw:API. I usually experiment with the Special:ApiSandbox to work out what calls I need. If you're planning to upload a lot of files, you may want to read Commons:Bots. There might be concerns about whether you've got adequate evidence of permission if you upload pictures taken by other people. If you're planning to do that I'd suggest discussing your precise workflow here or on Commons:Village pump/Copyright first. --bjh21 (talk) 20:24, 13 September 2022 (UTC)
You may also consider mapillary as backend. C.Suthorn (talk) 20:57, 13 September 2022 (UTC)

Visual Capitalist

Hi everyone,

I added the following image [3] from Visual Capitalist because Visual Capitalist states the following:"Visualizations are free to share and post in their original form across the web—even for publishers. Please link back to this page and attribute Visual Capitalist." and "Licenses are required for some commercial uses, translations, or layout modifications. You can even whitelabel our visualizations." [4]

Now I have the problem that I cant figure out which license-tag to use. I dont have much experience with copyright. Maybe someone can have a look at the issue. Thank you! Nsae Comp (talk) 19:18, 13 September 2022 (UTC)

These seems a lot like the -ND requirements of some Creative Commons licenses, which is not allowed here, as we make derivatives and remixes. —Justin (koavf)TCM 19:23, 13 September 2022 (UTC)

ImageNote problems

Not the first time I've seen something like this, but... A few years back I put a lot of work into annotating File:Seattle - Railroad Avenue, 1934 (46424094792) (border cropped).jpg. The ImageNotes are still there in the Wikisource but, at least for me (Windows, Firefox) they are not showing on the page. Does anyone understand what would be going on here? Fast machine, fast connection, so presumably it's not a timeout issue. - Jmabel ! talk 22:47, 13 September 2022 (UTC)

Malware and virus scanning of newly uploaded files

So when editors upload new files, do we scan the files for virus or malware before they are fully uploaded? In this day and age, it should probably be considered? Ww2censor (talk) 16:16, 14 September 2022 (UTC)

For images it is not necessary. Ruslik (talk) 20:36, 14 September 2022 (UTC)

Uploaded files are scanned by MW before publishing and rejected, if found to be dangerous. For example you cannot upload a SVG that uses external webfonts, or an image with a malicious URL in the EXIF information. You can also not upload a .MOV-Video, even if you change the file extension to .webm and even though the MW software can handle MOV (but you can upload AV1-video in spite of MWsoftware not being able to process it correctly) C.Suthorn (talk) 08:08, 15 September 2022 (UTC)

Uploading mp3 I created

Hello,

I'm a first time poster. I wrote, narrated, and produced a 1 minute audioclip (mp3) about the statistical analysis of data (really, it's interesting!). I'd like to upload it and use a Creative Commons license so that others can use and modify it for non-commercial purposes. I got a message that uploads of mp3s are disabled due to understandable concerns about copyright infringement. Can you help me upload this file?

I was looking to upload this image to Wikipedia. As the website for this license has stated, you cannot use the images for commercial purposes. I was wondering if using an image on a Wikipedia page would be considered commercial purposes. I'm not making any money of of this.

Translation of namespaces

Is it possible to translate namespaces to an another language? For example I use Commons in Turkish, but it causes some problems such as nominating a file for deletion, the text I see is something like "file [Turkish text]" and it seems pretty absurt. Nanahuatl (talk) 20:55, 16 September 2022 (UTC)

  • @Nanahuatl: I don't think we can do this within Commons. The Turkish Wikipedia, of course, has its own namespaces, but I know it was an enormous thing just to have "File" available as a synonym for the older "Image". - Jmabel ! talk 21:25, 16 September 2022 (UTC)

How is this image "copy-left"?

I am trying to understand the license used for File:Union_Jack_at_the_Eureka_Stockade.jpg (the original upload, not the later improved version). It is placed under a "copy-left" license, but I don't see how that applies. The source for the image is a 1960s publication (Australian Exploration and Development: The Revolt at Eureka by Ray Wenban, Pictorial Social Studies, Vol. 16, 1960). I would have contacted and asked the original uploader, but they haven't been active since 2011 (in fact, uploading this image was the only edit they ever made). I am asking here also because there is another image from that same source that I would like to upload, but I first have to understand its copyright status. Renerpho (talk) 06:59, 13 September 2022 (UTC)

If the image is made for "a series of illustrated history resources found in some Australian schools in the 1950s" (Pictorial Social Studies), the claim of Free Art License seems bogus. That source would not have known about that licence, developed much later. In theory, the uploader could have tracked and contacted the heirs of the author, or a company that got the copyright, but in such a case I think the uploader would have commented on that, and nowadays COM:VRT correspondence would be needed. There should probably be a deletion request. There may be some reason why the image would be in the public domain, but we would need evidence on that specific reason. –LPfi (talk) 18:21, 16 September 2022 (UTC)
Thanks, LPfi. Not the answer I was hoping for, but kind of expected. I have nominated the image for deletion. Renerpho (talk) 09:02, 17 September 2022 (UTC)

In Finnish in Finland

Hi! How can I link a Finnish article to a template "Commons category-inline" (in Finland it has the name "Commonscat-rivi") so that the text will be in Finnish? Perhaps there's a bug because it comes in English for the Finnish audience, and every reader must change the language manually. The category is: [5] "History of Finland". Can Wikimedia handle the exact address: "…Category:History_of_Finland?uselang=fi"? Jari Rauma (talk) 18:25, 12 September 2022 (UTC)

Convenience links: en:Template:Commons category-inline, fi:Template:Commonscat-rivi - Jmabel ! talk 18:30, 12 September 2022 (UTC)
I tried "Template:Commonscat-rivi" and "fi:Template:Commonscat-rivi" and a few more. Always in English, not in my language. Jari Rauma (talk) 18:52, 12 September 2022 (UTC)

Sorry, I just updated a little this History of Finland (I added a link to a new and fine documentary "The history of Sweden and Finland") Look in my sandbox: [6]. There's a line: "Kuvia tai muita tiedostoja aiheesta Suomen historia Wikimedia Commonsissa" (translated: Pictures or other files on the topic History of Finland on Wikimedia Commons) and it has your suggestion. In Finland it leads to English language page, but congratulations if it leads in your country to Finnish text. Jari Rauma (talk) 20:36, 12 September 2022 (UTC)
@Jari Rauma: I get "Kuvia tai muita tiedostoja aiheesta Suomen historia Wikimedia Commonsissa", which is presumably what you wanted. - Jmabel ! talk 23:38, 12 September 2022 (UTC)
Hm, I think they wanted to see the content of our category in fi language. The parameter "uselang" cannot be passed. IMO the only solution is extending fi:Malline:Commonscat-rivi to handle that. --Achim55 (talk) 10:46, 13 September 2022 (UTC)
I tried it and it works, see this link. However all it does it translates the content of the infobox and the maintenance template on the page. It doesn't translate names of the files, subcategories and other pages that are part of the category, and I'm afraid that can't be quite done. And simply visiting the page without the parameter in the link will display it in language that is set by default for the viewer, granted they are logged in to their account (otherwise English is displayed). I guess adding the uselang=fi parameter to the link in the template should be good.
P.S. - This is just testing: Category:History of Finland?uselang=fi - doesn't work, so it has to be an external link, not crosswiki link. Polda18 (discussioncontributions) 12:07, 13 September 2022 (UTC)
So somebody more technically gifted than me has to handle it, because it's quite complicated. Polda18 (discussioncontributions) 12:09, 13 September 2022 (UTC)
Files and categories have just one name, in one language. Translating categories is planned in principle, but the technical infrastructure seems to be scheduled to when cows fly. Category descriptions, fact boxes and descriptions are what should be seen in the user's language, or the language of the project from where the user is coming (in this case Wikipedia in Finnish, I assume). That should be handled automatically, as long there are labels or descriptions in that language in Wikidata, on the category pages and on the file description pages. It should not be handled by individual templates. –LPfi (talk) 18:08, 16 September 2022 (UTC)
Fair enough. I didn't know that the link from a specific language Wikipedia sets the language of the interface to the default interface language of referrer wiki if the user isn't logged in. Polda18 (discussioncontributions) 08:47, 18 September 2022 (UTC)
I have often got the interface language changed as logged-in. I haven't researched in what circumstances that happens, but possibly when clicking an image on some (?) Wikipedias. –LPfi (talk) 16:04, 18 September 2022 (UTC)
I have global preferences set up on Meta, and of course interface language is set globally to Czech in my case, so everywhere I go and log in, interface is in Czech language. So I may not actually know if something like that happens or not. Polda18 (discussioncontributions) 16:07, 18 September 2022 (UTC)

Can I upload a vintage studio portrait? I've located a photo in my mother-in-law's basement of a scientist who has a Wikipedia entry.

A screenshot of MediaWiki is not your own work. But there are templates and categories for screenshots of MediaWiki. C.Suthorn (talk) 16:19, 18 September 2022 (UTC)
In addition to the MediaWiki software there is the content of the page, which probably uses other licences (MediaWiki seems to be GPL). {{MediaWiki screenshot}} does not seem to handle that explicitly. Its documentation tells just to add the other licences beneath. –LPfi (talk) 16:27, 18 September 2022 (UTC)
Just taking the screenshot doesn't make you the author, so yes, use "not my own work". Then you need to identify whom to credit and what licence(s) to use. A permanent link (from the toolbox in the left margin) to the MediaWiki page might suffice for some of the information, depending on the page you use. Most Wikimedia wikis use CC-BY-SA 3.0 as licence for the text, but the software and any images might use different licences.
I don't know how you state the licences for a screenshot of a "collection" (in CC parlance) in a machine readable form. If you just add several licences they are taken as alternatives.

Londonderry & Coleraine Railway 1855 timetable

See the [File:Londonderry & Coleraine Railway 1855 timetable.jpg]. I gave this previously uncategorized file three categoriesː Rail transport in Northern Ireland; Train timetables in the United Kingdom; and 1855 in Ireland. All are fitting, but I do have a problem with using them together. Northern Ireland did not exist in 1855, and was a part of Ireland, which in turn was part of the United Kingdom. Nowadays Londonderry and Coleraine are not in Ireland, yet still apart of Northern Ireland and thus of the United Kingdom. So I wonderː are these categories all right this way? This file may be deleted. A file that you have uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, File:Puslespill AA S Laerdal.jpg, is a derivative work, containing an "image within an image". Examples of such works would include a photograph of a sculpture, a scan of a magazine cover, or a map that has been altered from the original. In each of these cases, the rights of the creator of the original must be considered, as well as those of the creator of the derivative work. While the description page states who made this derivative work, it currently doesn't specify who created the original work, so the overall copyright status is unclear. If you did not create the original work depicted in this image, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. Please edit the file description and add the missing information, or the file may be deleted. If you created the original content yourself, enter this information as the source. If someone else created the content, the source should be the address to the web page where you found it, the name and ISBN of the book you scanned it from, or similar. You should also name the author, provide verifiable information to show that the content is in the public domain or has been published under a free license by its author, and add an appropriate template identifying the public domain or licensing status, if you have not already done so. Please add the required information for this and other files you have uploaded before adding more files. If you need assistance, please ask at the help desk. Thank you! Copyright help regarding File:TBC Bank Uzbekistan logo.svg

Hello!

I received a notification that if within 7 days I do not indicate the appropriate type of license for the file File:TBC Bank Uzbekistan logo.svg, which I uploaded to Wikipedia, the file will be deleted. I don't know about licenses. I took this file from the official website of the bank. And he indicated this information in the description of the file with a direct link to the file. Help me please. So I don't want the file to be deleted. --Islomov2 (talk) 17:43, 19 September 2022 (UTC)

@Islomov2: Hi, and welcome. Why would it be legal to upload that file to the Uzbek language Wikpedia? Note that the bottom of https://tbcbank.uz/uz says "© 2022 ATB "TBC BANK" Litsenziya #86, 17.03.2022. Veb-sayt materiallaridan foydalanganda www.tbcbank.uz veb-sayti havolasi koʻrsatilishi shart." or "© 2022 ATB "TBC BANK" License #86, 17.03.2022. Honestly. I don't understand Wikipedia's license types. The bank's website refers to the bank's license. I think it's completely different. Can you help and edit the license type of the file correctly?Islomov2 (talk) 18:15, 19 September 2022 (UTC)
Commons can only accept content that is either in the {{Public domain}} or under a free license that allows commercial use and derivative works. This would not appear to meet those criteria. Most content on the Internet does not: a major point of Commons is to gather together this more freely reusable content and not to include images that are likely to result in a reuser getting sued! - Jmabel ! talk 21:09, 19 September 2022 (UTC)

Russian copyright law issue

I would like to upload the photos of the ash dump of the Novosibirsk CHP-5, made by Alexander Oshchepkov as employee of Novosibirsk online-media NGS.ru (here is the article for which these photos were made https://ngs.ru/text/summer/2019/06/07/66116086/).

According to the paragraph 3 of the article 1274 of the Russian Civil Code the reproduction of the work - for free but with a mandatory indication of the name of the author - is allowed, if this work was published in media articles on current economic, political, social, religious issues, and if such reproduction was not prohibited by author or rightholder.

Each photo used in the NGS.ru article accompanied by the button "Share". I think it means than neither NGS.ru nor Alexander Oshchepkov oppose free usage of these photos.

I want to use aforementioned photos in articles dedicated to Novosibirsk in English and Russian Wikipedia.

What do you think about this? K8M8S8 (talk) 19:11, 18 September 2022 (UTC)

Helloǃ

I am planning to upload an image. However, I have no idea if I could upload it since it is on a website. The content in that image is over 50 years old, but the image itself looks not too far from now. Can I still upload that Image to Wikipedia? Does that image still in the range of copyright protection time? Remixia (talk) 00:08, 20 September 2022 (UTC)

@Remixia: Hi, and welcome. Where did you find it exactly? Please see COM:NETCOPYRIGHT.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 02:47, 20 September 2022 (UTC)
  1. Most likely, something you "happen to find on the Internet" is not going to be acceptable for Commons. Probably 95% of what is out there is not, maybe more.
  2. If you can't tell from reading COM:NETCOPYRIGHT, it would be a lot easier to answer a question that gives a specific URL and lets us look at what site and image you are talking about rather than "it's somewhere on the Internet." - Jmabel ! talk 03:56, 20 September 2022 (UTC)

I see no reason to think that would not be copyrighted. For all we know, the photo (though not the object itself) could be quite recent. In any case, though, in Mexico any photo whose author died after 1952 remains copyrighted, and it's pretty certain these are more recent than that. - Jmabel ! talk 23:32, 20 September 2022 (UTC)

How do I correctly upload & license paintings by my deceased father?

Hello! I am trying to upload a photo of a painting my deceased father painted, an artist. I am the only heiress and own all his oeuvre and was trying to write an article about his biography. How can I correctly indicate this? A user has requested the deletion of one painting I uploaded as I licensed it as my "own work". Now I cannot change that anymore (or I don't know how at least). How is the correct procedure? Thank you so much in advance! EvaKatrinStolz (talk) 07:44, 21 September 2022 (UTC)

Sounds like you need to go through the process of sending an e-mail to Wikimedia Commons, confirming that you own the rights to the painting. This process is described here: COM:VRT. You can use the Release generator to create an e-mail you can send. TommyG (talk) 08:55, 21 September 2022 (UTC)
You should also state his name instead of yours as author. You can have yours as now in addition, as photographer (if you took the photo), preferably using {{photo|EvaKatrinStolz}}. –LPfi (talk) 09:22, 21 September 2022 (UTC)
The date field should also preferably be on the original work. If you don't know the year (or exact date), you can use a timespan or "before", "probably" or the like (there is a template, {{Other date}}, but as soon as the information is there, anybody can put it in the template, so you needn't worry). –LPfi (talk) 09:26, 21 September 2022 (UTC)
As for licensing, there are specific licenses that can be used by heirs: try Template:Cc-by-3.0-heirs or Template:PD-heirs. (I asked this same question recently about photographs taken by my dead father.) Choliamb (talk) 18:34, 21 September 2022 (UTC)

Copyright expired

Hello I've come across a website [8] that looks like a public domain and has expired copyright 4 years ago. Can I use this image under PD license or what would an appropriate license tag be okay for it?  Rejoy2003  09:16, 21 September 2022 (UTC)

No, that's not how copyright works. The footer stating "Copyright 2015 to 2018" doesn't mean anything on this page is in the public domain without an explicit release. TommyG (talk) 10:26, 21 September 2022 (UTC)
Footer stating copyright with a year span means in which year the content has been created (the site) and which year it was updated the latest. It has nothing to do with expiration of copyright, expiration of copyright is still driven by law, which most likely expires after 70 years after the death of the author if author is known, or after 70 years after publication if authorship is unknown (not registered). Exact copyright rules depend on the country of origin, which you can learn from Commons:Copyright rules by territory. What you assumed as copyright expiration was entirely wrong. @Net-komp 2552: Never EVER post online your password, even if you intend to delete your account, ANYWHERE. I suggest censoring these informations and removing the public edit from history to maintain your privacy, but I think that it is already too late, the damage has been done. You should be extremely cautious of what you're posting online and where you're writing such informations. Phishing campaigns exist that are designed to steal your login credentials, which I agree is sometimes hard to notice. But publicly listing your login credentials, completely willingly? That's straight out wrong. I just really hope you don't use the same password for your email address publicly listed here as well (even tho I kind of think you do). I ask an admin to remove the sensitive informations, censore them, and remove public edit in history so it's inaccessible. Just for you to know, that's for your own good, to protect your privacy and to protect your online accounts. Otherwise a solicit actor could get access to your banking account as well. The original photo was taken 105 years ago. It was published on the site "Conservation des Antiquités et objets d'Art du department de la Meuse". The notice is still there, but I didn't want to remove it because it seems like the notice should be evaluated by someone other than the uploader of the file. BappleBusiness (talk) 18:46, 15 September 2022 (UTC)

This doesn't need a permission, as all the sources are free. However it lacks categories. Thanks, Yann (talk) 18:57, 15 September 2022 (UTC)
@BappleBusiness: There is a problem though: Table grapes on white.jpg and Strawberry444 (cropped).jpg are licensed under GFDL 1.2 only, and that licence isn't compatible with CC-BY-SA 4.0. The images may be combined as a collection or aggregate, which does not need to have a common licence, and the file could be regarded as such, but then the licences need to be stated individually. I don't know how you do that according to Commons' practices. –LPfi (talk) 07:03, 25 September 2022 (UTC)

Translation of Metadata from Dutch to English

Koningin van de Maori's in Nieuw-Zeeland, Dame Te-Atairangikaahu, op Schiphol af, Bestanddeelnr 928-0447

This is a picture of en:Te Atairangikaahu and I'd like to use it there. Could someone who speaks Dutch please translate the metadata? I don't want to have to guess. Stuartyeates (talk) 04:13, 24 September 2022 (UTC)

The file does not have any metadata (EXIF). Do you mean the description in the info template? It is very simple and can be translated by online machine translation (deepl.com for example). However that is no verification, if the infromation is actually correct. The image is from an archive. Archives often use the information that comes with an image and do not themselves verify it, or even mangle it up accidently. C.Suthorn (talk) 05:38, 24 September 2022 (UTC)
✓ Done. I think the info of the National Archives of the Netherlands is highly reliable. Ellywa (talk) 05:44, 24 September 2022 (UTC)
@C.Suthorn: while colloquially on Commons we usually mean EXIF when we say "metadata", properly speaking any data about the image that is not part of the visual image is metadata. Everything other than the visual image or its digital representation that is on a file page or in an archive's database is metadata. - Jmabel ! talk 15:32, 24 September 2022 (UTC)
I know, but we have a heading "Metadata" (that contains EXIF/IPTC/XMP and nothing else) and a heading summary/description for what was asked for here. Heading summary/date and summary/author get autotranslated (if templates are used). Why is ther no "language select/show all" drop down box, if there are two languages? With long descriptions like in this image, it is confusing. C.Suthorn (talk) 09:33, 25 September 2022 (UTC)

I don't quite understand it, the rights were provided with the wizard - a mail was sent to permission-de@wikimedia.org (transaction number: 4819-d7e6cbf3f4a210fa.), yet it is not marked as rights cleared. Why? Thanks!

Mepherl (talk) 08:06, 24 September 2022 (UTC)
@Mepher1: please ask this question at Commons:Volunteer Response Team/Noticeboard and include the VRT ticket no. if you have received a response to your mail. But please wait a week or two, because the VRT volunteers tend to be overloaded. Ellywa (talk) 10:44, 24 September 2022 (UTC)
@Mepher1: I've added the tag to File:Litfasssäule Konzertankündigung Jenny Korb und Arthur Benda (Detail).jpg to indicate that permission is pending (do note in the instructions at Commons:Volunteer Response Team#If you are NOT the copyright holder that you should have done that). Another missing step is to provide a tag corresponding to the license they will be providing. I can't do that for you, because I don't know.
Assuming they do eventually provide permission and VRT verifies that, even if the image has been deleted in the meanwhile, it will be undeleted. - Jmabel ! talk 15:40, 24 September 2022 (UTC)
Thank you! --Mepherl (talk) 15:23, 25 September 2022 (UTC)

Suspicious "Own work" tag at File:Gabriella-Teychenné-2019.jpg

Hi, I'm new to the Commons, so I figured I'd ask here rather than start throwing tags around. The image at File:Gabriella-Teychenné-2019.jpg looks suspiciously like a selfie but is tagged as "Own work" by an editor who, according to their user page, is very much not the image subject. At the same time, I have no definite proof that this wouldn't be their own work. What's the standard procedure in cases such as this? - Ljleppan (talk) 07:28, 27 September 2022 (UTC)

Mmmh. No hits in reverse image search (neither Google, nor TinEye, Bing or Yandex). Not uploaded by a throwaway account. Looks like it was cropped considerably down to 0.22 Mpx - in a selfie she would have filled the frame so not much (if any) crop needed. The other option would be that it was downscaled to 0.22 MPix but that that would have required a really bad image to start with for it to be downscaled and still look this soft. It seems more likely to me that it was taken by someone else from a bit of a distance and then croppend down. Now, you could ask the uploader about it, maybe they still have the original with all the meta data intact. But with nothing more than a vague suspicion, personally I'd just let it go. El Grafo (talk) 08:23, 27 September 2022 (UTC)
Thanks for the prompt reply! Your logic re: image size sounds solid enough and was something I hadn't considered, so I think I'll just let this be :) Ljleppan (talk) 08:34, 27 September 2022 (UTC)

Uploading an image with a meme on top

If i saved an image found on wikimedia commons, and edit it. Am i allowed to reupload it to wikimedia commons as "my own work", or do i cite someone else's work? Many thanks Yarrowfes21 (talk) 13:45, 27 September 2022 (UTC)

  • @Yarrowfes21: That is a "derivative work". You need to credit the original, use a license compatible with the original (for example, if its license terms include "share-alike" yours must, too; usually simplest to use the same license), and be clear about what portions of the work are your own vs. the original. - Jmabel ! talk 14:23, 27 September 2022 (UTC)

Sign on door "Closed because of illness" - do we have a category for that?

I've been trying to use the "JustReplace.js" script made by User:Sreejithk2000 to replace this file with this svg file I created, but for some reason it keeps giving me this error message:

An error occurred while trying to do the requested action. A detailed description of the error is shown below:

And sure, I did manage to replace the town's emblem with the script, but when I tried it with the flag, it gave me that error message.

I just wanna know why it happens and if someone could replace it for me. Thanks. EnviousBird (talk) 00:04, 29 September 2022 (UTC)

How to deal with images under a non-CC free license?

Specifically, I’m wondering if MIT-licensed image files (no advertisement clause, but requires “copyright notice and license”) are uploadable, and if so how I should explain in the metadata that it is okay to upload it. Thanks!

PS: The image in question is a logo (of a piece of free software). I understand Wikipedia takes the stand that logos are not copyrightable, but coming from graphic design I don’t buy this argument.—Al12si (talk) 01:04, 29 September 2022 (UTC)

Use the template {{template:MIT}} for the ExpPat (=MIT) license. "Wikipedia" never said that logos are not copyrightable. Most logos do not meet the threshold of originality. Everything that does not meet the threshold of originality is not copyrightable. If your logo does meet the threshold of originality you have to honor the copyright. --C.Suthorn (talk) 07:00, 29 September 2022 (UTC)
Thank you. Most graphic design is a combination of simple shapes and text though; by that definition most graphic design is not copyrightable, which is clearly untrue.
Under US copyright law even forms are not copyrightable, nor fonts (that are not software). All these are a lot of work, including logos.—Al12si (talk) 07:11, 29 September 2022 (UTC)

I have another question. I double-checked the files and licenses and found that the PNG is MIT, but the SVG is CC4-NC-SA. So the PNG can be uploaded but not the SVG.

But the thing is there’s already a file here that’s a JPEG (so if I can’t upload the SVG there’s no point for me to upload anything), uploaded about a week after the SVG was uploaded to Github, under an “own work” claim. I don’t think that’s likely to be a true claim unless the person was claiming to have either taken a screen cap or rasterized the SVG. Should that upload be tagged somehow, and if so how? Thanks again and sorry for bothering everyone.

In case it’s relevant the logo in question is File:Wenyan-lang-Logo.jpgAl12si (talk) 07:44, 29 September 2022 (UTC)

Hello Mohdw04, this is Wikimedia Commons, and not Wikipedia. Anyhow, you can "move" your draft page to the article namespace. In that link, where the menu says "New title:" you need to change the "User" to "(Article)" and remove "Mohdw04/" in the next edit box, so only the intended name of the article is left. Then you click "Move page" further down.
Afterwards, please go to the talk page of the new article and add a string of code to attribute the original Arabic article: {{translated page|ar|عمر الوعري}} De728631 (talk) 18:29, 26 September 2022 (UTC)

Copyright help regarding File:Amy Malek, 2019.png

Hello. Are video still images (altered, cropped) within a creative commons license? I am confused and tried to look it up, but was struggling to find any references.

--PigeonChickenFish (talk) 05:13, 30 September 2022 (UTC)

Hi PigeonChickenFish. If the original video has been released under a free license accepted by Commons (see COM:L), then a screenshot from the video would also be OK to upload under the same license per COM:SCREENSHOT. Simply cropping a video is considered COM:2D copying in most cases and this means that the copyright of the source of the crop is the only thing that matters. In this case, the YouTube video that you got the screenshot from doesn't appear to be released under a license accepted by Commons which means the screenshot isn't OK for Commons and can't be kept without the videos copyright holder's COM:CONSENT as explained here. -- Marchjuly (talk) 08:14, 30 September 2022 (UTC)
@PigeonChickenFish and Marchjuly: I don't see any reason to believe that particular video has a Creative Commons license of any sort. Am I missing something? - Jmabel ! talk 14:30, 30 September 2022 (UTC)

like clarity on how they were able to take my work and that of others - hundreds of other images, and retail them. Credit is given for authorship, but no licence fee has been offered. 2.96.184.154 13:46, 30 September 2022 (UTC)

Did you upload this image here at commons? If yes, then everyone can offer copies on ebay (IF and only if the license is honored. What license did you chose?). If no, then this is not the site to answer this question. You should go to a lawyer. If you want a more specific answer, than post here the wikilink to your image and a link to the auction at ebay. C.Suthorn (talk) 14:13, 30 September 2022 (UTC)
Hi IP 2.96.184.154. I think the best that Commons can do is to point you to Commons:Enforcing license terms. You may also need to seek assistance from an IP attorney if you want to pursue things further. Commons doesn't, in principle, accept any types of licenses that place any restrictions on commercial reuse which means content uploaded to Commons can be downloaded and used is such a way. -- Marchjuly (talk) 14:33, 30 September 2022 (UTC)

Leon Lynch Photo uploaded

Hi, I was given a link to upload the photo of Leon Lynch and I did so; however, at the bottom of the document I was sent from Wikimedia, there was language that I did not see until after I completed the upload. I do not own the copyright on this image but the Steelworkers team completed the online permission form for submission of the image and they sent me written permission to provide the image to Wikipedia. I don't know how to delete the image and start again but am happy to learn how to do that so I can clarify that the copyright is not mine. The photo is not my original work. Thanks. STTLynch (talk) 23:32, 28 September 2022 (UTC)

  • @STTLynch: No need to start again: everything is editable. However, if you are not the copyright holder we'll need evidence for the license from the copyright holder. "Fingerposts"

| Looking for a suitable category for a picture of a signpost, I found that Category:Signposts in the United Kingdom is surprisingly underpopulated, but that many more images of what I would call "signposts" are instead found under "fingerpost" categories; see e.g. Category:Fingerposts in England. Personally, I have hardly even heard of the word "fingerpost". Wouldn't it be more helpful to globally change these "fingerpost" categories to "signpost"? What do you think? 16:57, 30 September 2022 (UTC) ITookSomePhotos (talk) 16:57, 30 September 2022 (UTC)

I wonder whether it a US/UK thing then. Or is it just me? Perhaps any UK-based contributors could comment on whether they have heard this term "fingerpost" used widely, or even at all, over here? ITookSomePhotos (talk) 19:20, 30 September 2022 (UTC)
@ITookSomePhotos: Yes, and as a UK resident I'd say a fingerpost is specifically a post that supports direction signs that are supported at one end with the other end pointing towards the destination. As Jmabel says, they're a subset of signposts, which might also have signs supported in the middle, and signs that aren't direction signs. So File:Signpost in Watlington - geograph.org.uk - 549910.jpg depicts a fingerpost, while File:Other danger - geograph.org.uk - 529339.jpg depicts a signpost that is not a fingerpost. Similarly (though possibly more controversially) I'd say File:004A W008 IMG 2774 W.jpg isn't a fingerpost because the signs are not mounted by their ends. The OED seems to agree with this distinction. --bjh21 (talk) 22:20, 30 September 2022 (UTC)
I see, well, I'm a bit surprised that I am so unfamiliar with this word, if it is in common, general use in the UK for directional signs with arms. In my own experience, "signpost" is overwhelmingly the usual word (in the UK) for objects such as File:Signpost in Watlington - geograph.org.uk - 549910.jpg. To me, "signpost" itself strongly suggests a directional sign, to the point where it could even seem misleading to refer to File:Other danger - geograph.org.uk - 529339.jpg as a "signpost". ITookSomePhotos (talk) 09:30, 1 October 2022 (UTC)
I've made Category:Directional signposts in the United Kingdom a subcategory of Category:Signposts in the United Kingdom, which seems to have been the missing, but obviously correct, link in the category tree. --bjh21 (talk) 23:06, 30 September 2022 (UTC)
