Why is the wikitext of the history of File:Center of Asia.JPG unavailable?

User:Oschtan overwrote User:Евгений Палецкий's file here and replaced the original uploader's name with their own. Whether that act is now unrevertible from age and the original needs copying to a new file or whether that should be rolled back, the original page's text needs to be available, but while I can see older pages in the history, any attempt to get at the Wikitext gets me only a page that says something like "[XeNrTgpAIDEAAFoESm0AAAAE] 2019-12-01 07:27:10: Fatal exception of type "InvalidArgumentException"".--Prosfilaes (talk) 07:28, 1 December 2019 (UTC)

There is no "right tag". Commons has not generally accepted works just under the PDM, which merely means that someone (who is not asserting they own copyright) is asserting for some unclear reason the work is in the PD. Automatic categorizing

It is a very useful thing that internationalization templates are automatically categorized to Commons templates-xy for the language xy (or Commons templates-xyz for xyz). But unfortunately exist also other templates whose name ends with two or three characters after a slash. Possible misuses of Template:Creator

Is there any way to look for individual file pages that might have "{{Creator|" in the wikitext in place of "{{Creator:"? - Jmabel ! talk 01:27, 1 December 2019 (UTC)

@Jmabel: use regex. This grouping - insource:/\{\{\s*[Cc]reator\s*\|/ - will find all {{<any whitespace>C/creator<any whitespace>|. My search turns up 23,377 results. Indeed many people misuse it. They should use {{Label}} instead.--Roy17 (talk) 12:48, 1 December 2019 (UTC)
I see, though a lot of them are using this with a Wikidata link, and I guess this makes sense. So we'd need a subtler regex, because "{{creator|wikidata=Q…" is typically OK. - Jmabel ! talk 17:54, 1 December 2019 (UTC)
@Jmabel: no they are not. The template is intended to be used in the following namespaces: the Creator namespace. This basic template is meant for defining a creator template only and not used directly on a file. Meaning of you may select the license of your choice

On some of the Commons image file pages I see the sentence beneath the requirements say "you may select the license of your choice". Above it I can usually find both the Creative Commons Attribution Share-Alike and the GNU Free Documentation license attached to the file. Does this mean I get to choose which one of these licenses I use in my work and not mention the other one at all? I am not planning on bringing the image to Wikipedia, I would like to move it to a social platform outside of all the wikis.Prana1111 (talk) 16:36, 1 December 2019 (UTC)

I am trying to enter a series for the science competition. I seem to have uploaded it somewhere but apparently not to the competition. When trying to enter it again to the competition, i seem unable to do so, but the reason is unclear to me.   • @Johnmaki: You don't say what country you are in but if (for example) you are in the U.S., you'd tag the file page with {{Wiki Science Competition 2019|us}}. If you are in a different country, then use the 2-letter ISO country code for that country. - 06:36, 2 December 2019 (UTC)

Why do my photos continue to be marked as possible copyright violations? All of the Canon camera photos that I've submitted have been created by my finger pressing the shutter button. I have photos of the Canon cameras involved that show their serial numbers; those serial numbers are included in the photo's EXIF data. The Nikon D7200 photos were taken by a friend of mine, and he has given me expressed permission to post those pics online.

I have a lot of pics posted on flickr, that may be part of the problem.

Help posting photo for Public Figure.

Hi there,

I've been trying to post photos for a public figure I'm connected with, using public publicity stills and giving credit to the photographers who took the photo, every time I try and upload they get flagged and taken down. I'm not sure how other public figures get this passed, as I see a bunch of actor/director/musicians who have publicity photos on their pages. How do I get this passed through?

@Jazzyjpl: Publicity stills almost always require going through the COM:OTRS process. There are two complementary reasons for this:
  1. Because most publicity stills are already somewhere else on the Internet, there is no way for us to know who is really behind the account that is posting them. Anyone can obtain these photos, claim to have the rights, and post them here.
  2. Very often, even people who are connected to the subject of the photo don't "have their ducks in a row" over the copyright issues. For example, for File:ChristianDitterOnSet.jpg you gave Warner Bros. as source, author, and permission, and claimed {{Attribution}} as a license. That is a very vague source (not like giving a URL to a page where the image appears), author (clearly, a corporation did not take the photo), and the chain of intellectual property rights is completely missing.
Basically, unless Warners has clearly published somewhere a statement licensing this as {{Attribution}} (in which case a link to that belongs in "source" or "permission", depending whether it is at the same URL as the source photo) you'll need to follow the COM:OTRS process. If Warners holds the copyright, then we need to have someone at Warners send email as specified from an email address at Warners stating that Warners holds the copyright and that they are granting this license. If you yourself are not authorized to speak on behalf of Warners, you can prepare a draft of such an email for them, but they have to be the ones to send it.
That's not a complete and neatly researched answer, and I looked at what happened with only one of the photos, but I imagine it gives you what you need. - Jmabel ! talk 02:15, 4 December 2019 (UTC)

plant locations, grouped by story

I have worked as a field botanist for many years and I have a lot of plant images I would like to make public somewhere. In many cases, there is a group of images, with a small "story" about them. For example "This the only population of Hieracium aurantiacum on the Shoals Cove road system, as of summer 2019." (a noxious weed likely to spread), or "As of September 2011, these are the only recorded locations of Populus balsamifera north of the Brook Range, other than those previously known at [blah blah] hot spring and at [blah blah] protected tarn." (a tree extending its range due to climate warming). Is there a reasonable way to do this in Wikimedia Commons? It seems the commons is more for individual images, each with its own metadata. I looked at "galleries", but I didn't see a way to put in more information than a brief gallery name. Perhaps you know of some other place to put records like this, where people who care about this could find them.   • @RickShory: Descriptions that are common to a series of images can be centralized in a category that includes them all (it can even be stored in a subpage and transcluded in all photos it pertains to). Very specific categories can be tagged with {{Set}}, too. Your first step would be to upload the images, and next to work on sorting them out. Uploading an old family picture

I am updating a Wikipedia article about my great uncle, who played a significant role in the Russian Civil Wars of 1917 - 1923. I would like to upload a photograph of my great uncle, taken in 1916 by an unknown photographer. This photograph is held in the family archive. Questions: 1. Would Wikimedia allow uploading a digital copy of this photograph? Keep in mind, we do not know who took it, and the photographer is most certainly have been dead for a long time. 2. Hello Ktadenev. If it's taken by an unknown photographer in 1916, the copyright is expired now, both in the United States and Russia. You may use {{PD-anon-expired}} and {{PD-US-expired}} as the license to indicate that the file is now in the public domain. Thank you. Ahmadtalk 14:26, 3 December 2019 (UTC)

@Jmabel: Thanks for pinging me, I almost forgot. To my knowldege, it needs 120 years after the creation date to be in the public domain in the United States, but about Russia... I can't find anything indicating that Russia also has a creation-date-based thing. However, because it was taken in 1916, it shouldn't be in the public domain in the United States; it still needs another 16 years. Ahmadtalk 19:20, 4 December 2019 (UTC)

How to edit a batch of my own photos

Hello, I'm just learning how to upload in batches because I want to get involved in some GLAM work. My 32 most recent uploads were my first upload with Pattypan, but I forgot to mention that the photos are my own work and that I release them with a regular self cc-by-sa-4.0 license. Filemovers and "suppressredirect"

Hello,

around a month ago, I got the message on my talk page that filemovers such as me have got the suppressredirect right. On my last 4 moves, I only got this option active on the last page (which was not used anywhere, the other three were linked to from some WP pages). Does the functionality check whether a file was used on other projects? Or what's the reason why I couldn't uncheck the box on e.g. the criterion-3-move of File:Mond-Azurjungfer.jpg to File:Ischnura elegans Grosse Pechlibelle 2018-07-29.jpg (is in use on w:de:Wikipedia:Redaktion Biologie/Bestimmung)? Help changing image in infobox for an existing page

Hi, We want to update the photo in the infobox on this page - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mike_Barnicle The photo we want to use is the main photo on this page - https://www.politico.com/story/2017/10/13/playbook-birthday-mike-barnicle-243740 How can I do this, and do I need to ask permission in order to do so?   • @LetASingleVoiceBeHeard: The photo there is indicated as "Courtesy Beth Laski" so presumably the person who could grant a license conforming to Commons' requirements is Beth Laski. I have no idea how to get hold of her, but Politico probably would. Since the photo is previously published, permission would have to come through the process described at COM:OTRS.

OK, then, several solutions, all involving OTRS:
  • Beth Laski can create an account of her own, write an email as described at COM:OTRS indicating that the account is really her and upload from that account.
  • Beth Laski can write an email as described at COM:OTRS indicating that the account User:LetASingleVoiceBeHeard is authorized in general to upload her work on her behalf. Probably best also to stick to a single license, and for her specify what license would apply to these uploads.
  • Beth Laski can write an email as described at COM:OTRS indicating that this particular image is free-licensed, and stating the specific license. She can indicate the image either with a URL or by attaching a copy.

Cropping an image already present in Wikimedia Commons

See COM:CropTool. You should choose the option to create a new file (unless you are only removing an unwanted "border") - see COM:OVERWRITE, and if it's a jpeg image please use "lossless" mode. If it's something more "tricky" than just a straightforward rectangular crop and you can't do it yourself, or if the Crop Tool doesn't give you the result you are looking for, you can post a request at the workshop: COM:GL/PHOTO. -- Begoon 02:35, 5 December 2019 (UTC)

Upload wizard does not take coordinates from EXIF data any more

I noticed that the upload wizard does not automatically take the coordinates from the picture's EXIF data any more. For example, File:Schwarzenberg, Lustenauer Hütte.jpg has (AFAICT) the coordinates stored in EXIF, but the upload wizard didn't use that information. It has worked for years for me, with the same camera and the same tools. Does anybody know whether this is generally broken or there's something wrong with my photographs? Strange. When I look at the file description page of your photograph and click on "Show extended details" under Metadata, the GPS data is listed. For my photographs, it isn't. However, when I look at my file in a different software, it clearly has GPS data in the EXIF, and it looks like it's stored the same way as in your file. --Reinhard Müller (talk) 10:09, 9 December 2019 (UTC)
When I look at my images for which it still worked, the GPS data is also correctly listed in the file description page. Between 16 September and 21 September, something seems to have happened which stopped the Mediawiki software to recognize the GPS data from my files (and, FWIW, a number of other EXIF information chunks). Can I use a figure that is part of a published article in Wikipedia?

I am currently revising a Wikipedia page. I would like to use a distribution map that is part of a published article. Am I allowed to use it if I give appropriate credit to the authors and include the citation?

For example, "Shrinking distribution of the Grizzly Bear during post-glacial, historic and present time. From: Feldhamer, George A., Bruce C. Thompson, and Joseph A. Chapman.   • File:Ursus arctos horribilis map.svg - In general we can't use copyrighted illustrations, but we can use the information they contain as a source to create new ones. You should probably include the citation for the data in the article where you use the map, even though it's credited on the file description page as not everyone will know to look there. There's COM:GL/MAP or COM:GL/ILL if you have something else you need creating and can't do it yourself. -- Begoon 04:29, 5 December 2019 (UTC)

Looks public domain. Any works credited to NOAA are public domain, regardless of the publisher, so long as they are not derivatives, such as might happen with extra diagrams and highlights on an image. Best case, find the source at the NOAA website. --Fæ (talk) 11:35, 5 December 2019 (UTC)

Citing incorporated works

Hello, I have a question about citing incorporated works. I've made an educational poster using my own text but also images from other authors. There shouldn't be a licensing problem since the images have been published under CC By 4.0 or 3.0. I am not sure though how to properly cite them and how to license the poster as a whole.   • That may be a bit problematic, since the presumed intent is for the poster to be printed. The attribution and the image of the license is going to have to be present on the poster itself. I am not sure what exactly is the minimum text you can get away with and be compliant (it will probably involve a URL for the license terms). Can someone else help further?. Image help wanted

Hi. I recently uploaded this file to Wikipedia under a fair use rationale. It was taken at sea off Hooker Island, near Franz-Josef Land, then part of the Soviet Union, in July 1931. It shows the view from a boat launched by the Soviet icebreaker Malygin on its way to exchange mail with the airship Graf Zeppelin. I got it from this site, which says on the relevant page that Most of the images on this site are from the author’s personal collection of unpublished material... I have of course emailed Dan Grossman to ask him if he knows who took it.

I can't find the image elsewhere than at that site. If it was an unpublished photo by an unknown, probably Soviet, person, taken at sea but probably within Soviet waters, is there any chance that the full size image would qualify for upload here? --The Huhsz (talk) 19:28, 6 December 2019 (UTC)

To whom it may concern,

We are creating an application which will server wikicommons photo urls listed on Open Street Map image tags and want to know how I should write the image url to be served a thumbnail image consuming less bandwidth.

I saw that I was able to add the text "/thumb/" append to the photo url a size plus a bit of repetition to get a thumbnail ... but was not sure if this is a built in feature of wikicommons, or was a one off... for example

  • If you are doing something like this, you almost certainly want to make sure that you also link the file page, for clarity of attribution.
  • On an ad hoc basis this should work, but I don't think we've ever guaranteed stability of thumbnail URLs. If you are going to do something like this, make sure you start from the filename and that the pattern is expressed in code or (better yet) in a tuneable values somewhere, so that it can easily be changed if needed.
  • Aside, but not useful for your automated purpose: you can always get a particular thumbnail URL by methods like (in Firefox) right-clicking on the thumbnail and selecting "Copy image location".

Not sure about attribution, you may want to provide an example. The API JSON is stable, but the WMF have changed a few names over the years. I am unaware of there being any changes to the image data planned, nor the way thumbnail urls are named. --Fæ (talk) 17:22, 7 December 2019 (UTC)

  • attrLink should be just what you want for attribution.
  • The only reason the link doesn't work on this page is that mediawiki syntax won't cope well with a quoted URL. attrLink is single-quoted here, and of course the opening single-quote before 'http' isn't treated as part of the URL, but since the the character is a perfectly valid character in a URL, it has no way to know that the closing quote isn't part of the URL. - Jmabel ! talk 22:10, 8 December 2019 (UTC)

series submisssion for science competition

Getty Images

Please sign your postings. Getty Images is a commercial stock-images agency, well-known for suing anybody who uses their images without paying. So, Getty may offer images which are actually in the public domain in one country, but eventually not in another. Therefore we are extremely cautious about images associated with Getty and in doubt will not accept them on Commons. --Túrelio (talk) 16:08, 8 December 2019 (UTC)

I can't understand why someone forced me to accept the autopatrol right

After many comments here and in other discussions, Kai agreed to recieve the autopatrol right and he has been regranted the autopatrol right by King_of_Hearts. Some participants of this discussion suggested that Kai should use more advanced tools such as Cat-a-lot, VisualFileChange etc. Kai has finally understood that and seeking a mentor who can teach him about those tools. While that part of the discussion has not been fully resolved, I do not think we need to discuss it on two places. Interested users/mentors should comment on Commons:Help_desk#What_is_the_more_advanced_tools? instead. I am fully aware that I have commented on this discussion and I am not an uninvolved editor but I do not think the community wants to see more drama. As such, I am boldly closing this discussion. Take a look at this. Why he said, “you're wasting everyone's time”? I think that I don't need someone to grant me the autopatrol right(which is my own business), it will not hinder my work. This has been the case since I joined Wikimedia Commons in 2012. However, I saw him accepted accepted the nomination for patroller(see here). I didn't force him to do something he doesn't want to do. Thats because otherwise every edit of you should (or has to be) patroled by other users to confirm they are free from vadalism or similar. No, he completed a task, you denied to "do". You should read Commons:Patrol (or a translation of your choice). Patroling means to confirm that an edit is free of vandalism or similar. If you would accept the autopatrol flag, nothing will change for you, except most of your edits will be marked automaticly as patrolled so that nobody need to look after them. regards --JuTa 20:54, 29 November 2019 (UTC)
@Kai3952: Exactly what JuTa said. Not being autopatrolled is like being supervised. A supervisor (patroller, a human volunteer) is constantly checking if you are not breaking the wiki. This is needed for new users who might break things. When a user becomes more experienced, they are marked as autopatrolled: no longer needing a supervisor. I believe he already explained that to you. Most of your edits are like automated and not difficult to do it automatically. As you are not autopatrolled, that many semi-automated edits increases the patrol backlog. I suggested what you can do. Accept autopatrol and/or categorize images based on their content, like adding File:Bill Clinton.jpg to Category:Men wearing neckties. There are many others things to do, like adding "depicts" statements, reverting vandalism, taking and uploading your own photos, recording words with a microphone and uploading the sound for the pronunciation on Wiktionary, etc. Accepting autopatrol is a good idea and a focus on work that can't be automated would make your contributions more valuable. You have been busy for a month or so categorizing Solomon203's uploads. All that time your edits had to be dealt with by patrollers who were looking for bad edits. I finished the job within a day without asking a single second from the patrollers. If you just say "I accept autopatrol", you can get back to work and nobody will bother you about this anymore. Kai3952: I think I start (hopefully) what you are complaining about: You like to (re)categorize images, and take days or even weeks to do that. Then suddenly somebody else "hopped in" with a tool you cannot use without autopatrol rights, and completes the task within minutes. Now your work is gone and you are angry. Well, the likely intention of that person was really to help you, as there was a much more effective method to to that task, and not to "steel" your work. If you would accept these autopatrol right, you would be able to do the same within minutes (i.e. with Cat a lot). And even without this right there are a lot of other backlogs on commons you can help. Look i.e. into Category:Media needing categories requiring human attention. Simply put you are making more work for other people. A lot more work. When someone tries to work through the enormous amount of work you have created you tell them to stop. That isn't feasible. The amount of work you create is immense and leaving it there causes problems for all of our patrollers. This is not fair to them. Multiple people have tried to help you. Multiple people have tried to explain to you how autopatrolled will solve these issues and you have either ignored them or simply not understood. I don't know if this is a language barrier issue or some sort of deep misunderstanding but we are not getting through to you. Jmabel is one of those people that tried to help you and you have failed to understand, so they no longer want to attempt to assist. The more you refuse to listen to reason the more people are going to stop wanting to help you. @JuTa and Jmabel: I'm not particularly fond of the message Kai3952 put up on his user and talk page. It suggests I will be doing whatever he was doing. I only jumped in for something that was easy to do semi-automatically, and I probably wouldn't even have done that if Kai3952 had been autopatrolled. (note: he continues to beat around the bush when it comes to actually accepting autopatrol.. never mind the silly accusations above) I was looking at RTRC and it was basically unusable because Kai3952's edits flooded it. It didn't take long until I realized these edits could be carried out very quickly, so I did, hoping Kai3952 would move on to something that really requires human attention. @Roy17: Kai shouldn't be autopatrolled for their own benefit, Kai should be autopatrolled for the patrollers' benefit. He performs many edits and they swamped the patrol log. You don't have to do anything, but currently Kai seems dead set on leaving Commons. Bot patrolling doesn't appear to be working well (Rileybot was supposed to be doing that) but even if it did work, you'd need a rather high refresh rate to keep recent unpatrolled changes clean. To be honest, I really don't get it when you say that other users are annoying when you're the one making a fuss about the auto-patrolled right. Furthermore, it doesn't even change anything when you edit with the auto-patrolled right. Just that patrollers do not have to patrol your edits knowing that they are good and as Masumrezarock100 mentioned, it is a waste of space in the patrol log. You said "You are like my supervisor, but a supervisor won't take my work away from me." but please think about this, Will a supervisor prefer a worker who does the same amount of work in 30 minutes or someone who takes a whole 30 days to finish the same thing? It takes one to see one, if you think others are annoying, you're most probably annoying too. So far, you've annoyed a total of 6 (more/less, idk.) people, namely, me, Jmabel, Alexis Jazz, Zhuyifei1999, Majora and most probably, Roy17. How? They tried to help you by asked you questions so that they can understand the situation better, but instead of answering them, you misinterpret or don't give a damn about them. The only thing that changes is that your edits will not clog up the RTRC and it is seriously very difficult to sift out bad edits that are squeezed in between your good edits (~1.1k/day).   • The appropriate essay is Don't be a jerk. The autopatroller right makes it easier for others to work here without following along with you. If you think someone has been wrongfully reverting your edits, that is a separate issue and your complaint about the autopatroller right make that point seem silly. Bring it up with them or bring it up at Commons:Village pump or other places and get a consensus for your version. I didn't want a fight and I was scared if I didn't do what he said then he was going to take away my work(as he said: "I will every once in a while complete whatever task you are working on"). I had to learn to use the "more advanced tool" to help me be more efficient at my work, but also to help with take care of the patrolling backlog. 1916 painting by Helene Perdriat, who died in 1969

I'm trying to find an image of a work by this artist, who died in 1969. I've found a 1916 painting online, but when I started to upload, the questions confused me as they wanted to know if it was both pre-1924 AND by an artist who died 70 years ago, so I wasn't sure whether both were required? I had originally created an account when I donated 2 years ago. I was trying to edit my account but it does not show anything except my user name under Wikipedia Commons when I click on 'account' after logging in. Is there a record of past donations? Photo Contest

Joined Commons so I could submit datum. Once I saw an option 4 a category; I clicked on Micro.

As I went on 2 2nd pic I tried 2 click on "add another category" and it wouldn't present a menu of other options. So I'd like, 4 ease of acquiring an image, "as U'r pages state" but now I'm only in 1 place.

If she has already indicated the license online, then besides the usual:
  • in the {{Information}} template, indicate her as author.
  • Do not use {{Self}} or {{Own work}}.
  • Assuming the permission is given on the same web page as the photo, give that page as source.
    • If it is more complicated than that, respond here and I can give you more detail.
  • Use precisely the license that she has offered.
If she has not already indicated the license online, and cannot do so before you upload, then you'll need her to go through the process outlined at COM:OTRS. The Chinook Jargon Dictionary

Hello Joe, it looks like you have a digital copy of the Chinook Jargon Dictionary; I was truly hoping that you might send me one, as I was hoping to share it with participants of our Coiled Cedar Root Basketry workshop next summer. I have a facebook page titled The Chinook. I live in Yale, BC, and have aboriginal friends in Washington State. Chinook Jargon was widely used in the 1800's here, and we still use many of the word in everyday life and in placenames; we have at least three places called Skookumchuck in BC.

The book is Chinook: A History and Dictionary of the Northwest Coast Trade Jargon by Edward Harper Thomas. I do not have a digital copy, I have the book itself, and I don't usually function as a long-distance lending library. It would probably cost half as much to send the book back and forth as for you to buy a copy. Adding an archived source link to a picture

I have come across a picture which has listed two sources: both pages no longer exist, but were captured on the Wayback Machine. Imagens com marca d'água

Olá, publiquei hoje um artigo de minha autoria, sobre uma região dentro do Bairro Praia Da Costa em Vila-Velha/ES o "Parque das Castanheiras" (local muito valorizado pelo mercado imobiliário local e que não existe oficialmente como bairro, pois é uma microrregião dentro de um bairro)

A questão é que algumas imagens possuem marca d'água do blog no qual o artigo foi publicado inicialmente. O problema é que eu mesma fiz as fotos, personalizei com a marca do blog (que também é meu) e assim publiquei no Wikipédia. Imaginei que não deveria citar o dreamcasa.com.br como autor para não configurar spam, uma vez que fiz a contribuição com meu nome pessoal e não empresarial. Preciso de orientações de como proceder, pois não desejo ferir as diretrizes do Wikipedia. Ao contrário, desejo contribuir de forma íntegra.

Hello, User:GreenMeansGo. You're not answering my question and I'm frustrated that my first question on and upload to Wikimedia Commons illicits a time-wasting response. Firstly, I didn't claim anything. My wording, if you look, is that the piece is "Thought to be a representation of Emporer Galba". If you follow the links in GautierPoupeau's original posting of this image, you will see that this is wording direct from the Louvre which houses the head bust. In GautierPoupeau's own description it reads that this is "Moi, Auguste, empereur de Rome". I don't know why the file is named Crassus, perhaps that comes from the Italian. Emporer Galba had a lot of names.

@Sirscha: Once you are autoconfirmed, you will be able to overwrite a file using the "Upload a new version of this file" link under the file history. One reason why that right is restricted is because in many cases this is not the right thing to do. As explained in COM:OVERWRITE, a file should only be overwritten if it's a minor, uncontroversial improvement on the original, and I don't think replacing the background with plain black is likely to be entirely uncontroversial. --bjh21 (talk) 23:53, 11 December 2019 (UTC)

Hey Cutmutia1998. You seem to have made your way to Wikimedia Commons, which is a sister project of Wikipedia, rather than Wikipedia proper. While Wikipedia is a free enclyclopedia, Wikimedia Commons is a repository or archive of free media for use on sister projects and for the general public. In the future, you may have more success asking at en:Wikipedia:WikiProject Articles for creation/Help desk.
As to your question, newspaper articles are usually considered reliable, depending on the source, as some papers are not written or vetted by professionals. How to ensure my image does not get deleted? (Tried twice already and deleted both times even with permission granted from owner of image)

Hi, I am very new to Wikipedia and Wikimedia commons still and have tried various times to upload and keep the image uploaded for Martha Hart and use it for her Wikipedia since there are no images uploaded on her Wikipedia. The picture is owned by her and I contacted Martha Hart about using the image on her Wikipedia page, which she has agreed to and allowed. She also sent her approval by sending an permissions email to the address: permission-en@wikimedia.org. What are the best ways to ensure that my image does not get deleted and taken off her Wikipedia page?   • @Kgywu: I assume this is about File:Image of Martha Hart.jpg. To the best of my knowledge, Commons never got acceptable permission from the copyright-holder via OTRS. The relevant permission would presumably be from Lubna Anis as the photographer; permission from the subject of the photo is not relevant.
  • Please do not upload the same image again without getting permission sorted out first. If we can sort this out, that one will be undeleted; if you ignore the situation and start uploading the same thing again, your account is liable to be blocked. (On the other hand, if we can get a higher-resolution version of the photo once permission is worked out, that would be entirely good.)
  • I will mention this discussion at Commons:OTRS/Noticeboard; there doesn't seem to be any public record of what individual handled this for the OTRS team, but this will get hold of the team. Kgywu: for this image File:Image of Martha Hart.jpg, the photographer can respond to Ticket:2019032510009458 (per the email they were sent on 23 March 2019) with this name of the image, specifically stating the name of the file is different from that of the original correspondence, together with their new permission statement with this image name.   • Let's stick here with CC-BY-SA (not sure what you mean by "the wiki license"). "Snail mail" and "only 100 envelopes sent per year" are completely beside the point. "Hardcopy" is relevant only because any acknowledgement of a license needs to be textual, not just (say) a link.
  • I'm a little confused as to what you are trying to do. There is not a lot of text on Commons; that would typically be more of a consideration for (say) Wikipedia, but I presume there is a reason you are asking here. The text on help pages, descriptions, etc. here is, indeed, CC-BY-SA 3.0, as are descriptions of images, hover text, etc.
  • The key is that the "BY" in CC-BY-SA means that you need to be clear about attribution. For text, that means that you would typically go to the "history" of the page from which you are taking text and, using that, could list the authors to whom you attribute the text. However be careful about the origin of text that might have come in from a third-party site. E.g. the title and description of File:1st Ave looking northwest from Yesler Way toward the Yesler-Leary Building, Seattle, 1888 (WARNER 619).jpeg came from University of Washington Libraries, not BMacZeroBot.
    • If the list of authors is excessively long -- e.g. a policy page with dozens of contributors -- you presumably can attribute a few names, add et. al., and give the URL of where the list can be found (the history page).
  • You will need to state that you are using these texts under the CC-BY-SA 3.0 license. I recommend modeling that on the text of {{Cc-by-sa-3.0}} and also providing the URL https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Creative_Commons_Attribution-ShareAlike_3.0_Unported_License as a full description of the license.

  • NOTE: I am not a lawyer, nor am I a frequent reuser of other people's textual content from Wikimedia Commons. So you were asking about Wikipedia, not Commons (the site on which you asked the question)? Considering the chemical and physical properties of atoms, according to scientists, an atom is made up of three components, including neutrons, protons, and electrons; however, according to God the creator of the atom, there are no electrons, protons or neutrons in the atoms, but atoms are formed by bonding between the clockwise (right rotational direction) and counterclockwise (left rotational direction) elemental particles, which themselves originate from a single particle called the Basic Elementary Particle, discussed in detail in various chapters of this book, determining the formation of bonds between these particles. Thus, three-winged angles are an integral part of the structure of the atom, and after joining two three-winged particles to each other, they form another particle, called the four-winged angel (now called as neutron). There are no electrons within the structure of an atom, moving around the nucleus or core in special orbitals cross-linked to protons. Rather, the two-winged angels in the universe are similar to the three-winged angels except that their energy levels are lower than the three-winged angels, and they play role different from the three-winged angels. Museums like the Smithsonian and the Art Institute (Chicago) have many scanned images of his paintings on their websites, dating back to 1919. Am I correct that for any pieces done prior to 1923, I could upload the museums' images to Commons? Or am I not allowed to do that because they might have, say, scanned a 1922 painting in 1990, and so they have the copyright on the 1990 image of that 1922 painting, but not the copyright on the painting itself? The Art Institute's terms of use page seems to suggest I can't use their images that are not explicitly designated as CC0. But the Smithsonian says they "allows personal, educational, and other non-commercial uses of the Content." So, my evolving thinking is that I could put the artists' images from the Smithsonian into Commons, even those after 1923, giving full credit to the Smithsonian, but I cannot upload any of the Art Institute's images because of their more restrictive licensing terms. I'm also wondering if I take a picture of one of his paintings in a museum, can I then upload that image to commons? Copyright help regarding File:Al najma club crest.png

Cannot change an image to a correct one

Sure, China claims Taiwan - but there are 2 countries and with absolute and total control over their respective lands. I tried to edit the photo to be correct but I cannot edit/upload it.   • @JohnMHoover: Is this about File:10 JOHN solo John McEuen Deering Hi Res-31 conv copy 2 Deering, blue coat copy 2.jpg or some other image? You've indicated "own work" on that. Are you the photographer? Because you say here "he gave me a photograph" which doesn't make sense if you are the photographer.
  • If you mean some other image, who owns the copyright for the picture in question?
  • What is the "free license" offered for the picture?
  • If you are not the photographer, is there somewhere on line, on a site or page clearly under control of the copyright-holder (typically the photographer), that indicates the grant of this "free license"?
    • If not, and if that cannot be done, then see COM:OTRS for the necessary process so that we know that the copyright holder is offering an appropriate free license.
  • Also: you say you are "administering John McEuens page." Do you mean John McEuen, something else in the English-language Wikipedia or Commons, or something off-wiki? Because as far as I know you are by no means an administrator on either the English-language Wikipedia or Commons, at least not under this account name.
  • Also: on John McEuen: what's with the caption "Playing my Deering Banjo John McEuen model!" Who is the "me" in a Wikipedia article?
  • Also: have you read en:Wikipedia:Conflict of interest? It's not a concern on Commons, but it looks like you haven't abided by this on the English-language Wikipedia. Which file is that? You did not log in with your account when you asked this question, so without some more information we cannot check your uploads. Usually we allow the courtesy removal of recently uploaded files within one week, but unless there is something seriously wrong with copyright or e.g. someone's personal information has been leaked by an upload, we do not delete images after that period of time. Google Earth image modification

Unfortunately such maps cannot be uploaded here. To quote en:Google Earth: "Every image created from Google Earth using satellite data provided by Google Earth is a copyrighted map. Any derivative from Google Earth is made from copyrighted data which, under United States Copyright Law, may not be used except under the licenses Google provides. Google allows non-commercial personal use of the images (e.g. on a personal website or blog) as long as copyrights and attributions are preserved." I don't think that image would be allowed. The image is sourced to Pixabay, whose license (https://pixabay.com/service/license/) contains Don't sell unaltered copies of an image. e.g. sell an exact copy of a stock photo as a poster, print or on a physical product.. I would see this as a non commercial clause, which aren't allowed here. It does also seem the website is misrepresenting the original license, as that isn't CC0 as claimed. ~~ OxonAlex - talk 18:36, 19 December 2019 (UTC)

  • Chip, while I appreciate your work on- and off-wiki, I don't think we can give a courtesy deletion on File:Ruby Sales, 2014, Washington, DC, 1.jpg on the basis that it was somehow incorrectly uploaded over five years ago. That train has left the station: in that much time, it is very likely someone off-wiki has used it, and we pretty much need to keep it there as evidence that you granted the license. Bug on Wikimedia Commons?

As I mentioned on ʽTalk:Main Pageʼ, There are certain punctuation marks that I cannot type out properly here. These areː the tilde, 'at' sign, dollar sign, percent sign, asterisk, underscore, plus sign, curly and square brackets (both opening and closing), and the colon. The same goes with all other places you can type on Wikimedia Commons, including the edit summary bar, search bar, etc. etc. This does not happen anywhere else, including Wikipedia. Revoking/revising valued image status

What is the procedure for re-evaluating a valued image? File:Aloe erinacea, Jardín Botánico de Múnich, Alemania, 2013-05-04, DD 01.jpg was misdentified as Orbeanthus hardyi and was made a valued image of for that species. It probably is the best image in Category:Aloe erinacea, but I'm not sure if I should remove the valued image designation, update it to reflect the correct identification, or initiate a new valued image nomination.   • You don't mention what tool you are using to upload, or what the error message says, so it's hard to guess.
  • Is the logo so simple (or so old) as to be in the public domain? If not, then we almost certainly need to go through the COM:OTRS process to get a license.
  • Note that the company does not necessarily own the copyright of its logo. If it was designed by someone outside of the company, they would own the copyright unless it was explicitly transferred. uploading photo of art and photo of an artist

I would like to add photos of my mother's original paintings to her Wikipedia page. I don't think any of us know who took those photos years ago. How can I upload them and get them accepted?

@MimiGPF: With regards to question one, photographing a painting is generally not seen as an original work for copyright purposes, in the same way scanning a printed picture wouldn't be creating a new work (see Commons:When to use the PD-scan tag for the details). This means that the creator or rights holder of the original work would license it for use here.
For the second, you would need the photographers permission to upload and license the image - we don't just store images for Wikipedia, all of our images must be released under a suitable free license - see Commons:Licensing, which expands on free licensing, and gives the licenses we accept.

  • @MimiGPF: Assuming the paintings are essentially two-dimensional and the photographs are accurate representations of the paintings, then the photographs of the paintings would have no separate copyright. The issue would be entirely the copyright of the paintings. If you mother is still alive, she would presumably hold those rights, and we'd need to go through the COM:OTRS process. If she is no longer alive and you are the heir to her intellectual property, a license tag like {{Cc-by-sa-4.0-heirs}} would do.

I would be very grateful if someone could help me out with this file, [5]. I believe it's currently being hosted on the English Wikipedia under non-free use. There's been a fair amount of discussion here, Commons:Village pump/Copyright#Julia Morgan and Hearst Castle and at the image's Talkpage, [6]. The consensus view is that it should be recategorized as Template:PD-US-no notice and moved to Commons. I'm afraid I don't know how to do this properly. Since it's apparently PD, we don't need to transfer with any special tool (uploader on Wikipedia and history there has no special significance), so just download a copy to your machine and upload cleanly (probably with Special:Upload rather than the Wizard) here on Commons.
Then create a file talk page for it with permalinks to the relevant discussions, e.g. https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Commons:Village_pump/Copyright&oldid=382993086#Julia_Morgan_and_Hearst_Castle, and/or copy-paste those discussions to the file talk page. - Jmabel ! talk 17:56, 25 December 2019 (UTC)

Uploading copyrighted material with consent from creator

Hi. Complete and utter newbie here. I’m editing the page associated with an artist, Bratsa Bonifacho, on whose behalf I’m acting. I’ve created a Wikipedia account, updated the lists of shows and collections, etc., with information after 2010, and made a couple of minor edits in the Further Reading section. The artist would like to update the image to a more current work, and has provided the image he'd like to use along with formal consent to publish it under the free license: Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 Unported and GNU Free Documentation License (unversioned, with no invariant sections, front-cover texts, or back-cover texts).

Can anyone tell me how to proceed from here?

Fairly easy. You can find that yellow "Cat-a-lot" button on many pages, such as search results, categories, gallery pages etc. Click on it, enter the name of the category you want to add files to or remove them from, and press ↵ Enter. Some categories will appear. Now, select files by clicking on them. When you're done, just choose an action from Cat-a-lot menu. "+" will add selected files to the category, "-" will remove them from that category, and "🠚" will remove them from the existing category and add them to the new category. @Kai3952: It's a mass-editing tool. You can, for example, make a gallery at your sandbox (like what I did here), select all images in that gallery using Cat-a-lot, and perform certain actions on them. I need a variety of categories when I work on different files. If the community wants me to work more efficiently, Cat-a-lot should be designed to be intelligent enough to make these "flexibility" edits, instead of hand entering the category. Concern regarding Arabic Wikipedia

Hello

To safeguard our beloved Wikipedia from editors and administrators who abuse or misuse their role in Wikipedia. Sorry to trouble you....I am writing to you because I am not sure whom to contact.

I noted over the years that Jihadist Muslim extremists are trying to control the published material in Arabic , and even worse, to propagate their extremist ideologies. They are self-appointed censors as to whether a publication complies with their views or doesn't.

They call themselves Ahl-Al-Sunna wal- Jama'a, which is the name of the minority Jihadist Islamic sect of Al-Qaida and ISIS, aiming at misleading people in that they are the majority of Muslims, by mere playing with words. There is an extensive page on Wikipedia entitled ( Ahl Al-Sunna wal- Jama'a اهل السنة والجماعة), promoting their Jihadist ideology .

There is another vast page entitled (Reference books of Ahl aL-Sunna wal- Jama'a) which is a list of hundreds of books, and same number of pages, a page for each book.

There is another page entitled ( Ideology books of Ahl Al-Snna wal- Jama'a ) with a list of 101 books...and same number of page, one for each book.

There is another page entitled ( Wikipedians from Ahl Al-Sunna wal- Jama'a) enlisting hundreds of them.

Their "boxes" on their user pages plainly, proudly and shamelessly say that they are followers of Ahl Al-Snna wal- Jama'a., and from their Talk pages and corresponding with each other you can easily detect how they liaise with one another.

There are many other pages which are specially edited to explain the details of their beliefs and practices.

All in all , hundreds if not thousands of pages of Arabic Wikipedia are devoted to their ideology ...millions and millions of words.

There are many entries on English Wikipedia too, which need to be scrutinized.

We have to remember that these people are electronically legible, especially those who live in the West, who have rendered themselves devotedly available to its cultural institutions with an astronomical number of personal contributions. I can tell from personal experience , Amazon is another domain for their activity.

They have been defeated on the ground but their ideology will remain for as long as we are careless.

This clearly seems to be a matter for Meta Wiki. This is in case the problem can not be solved within the Arabic Wikipedia or when there are rules established that contradict in a fundamental way to the general rules esablished by the Wikimedia Foundation. Metawiki is the place to discuss problems on a broader scope. If you want to discuss the subject there, it would be very helpful when you can select and link some distict pages where you can show very clearly how the article got altered to match the ideology. A part of the case includes the way users get treated, when they oppose such alterations. Are there admins that protect the ideology? You need to show your case in details. Wikipedia never forgets, so even deleted pages can be reviewed by some people on meta with extended rights, when you still can provide the link to it. So there is no hiding, when you can point it out. Please take some effort to learn what Meta Wiki is and how it works to be effective in what you are doing. However, in order to help its classmates to gain career-related education that can be applied in their real lives, the company has recently added "Career Course" category. Mysterious script error

I recently uploaded File:Esperanto (The Universal Language).djvu using the IA Upload tool. Upon uploading the file, however, the description section has nothing but the message "The ID "M0" is unknown to the system. Please use a valid entity ID." SVG display error

File:Wikimedia Café logo in plain SVG format.svg displays correctly when I view it locally in my browser, but the file renders incorrectly on Commons. The image should have a nearly identical appearance to File:Wikimedia Café logo in plain PNG format.png.       • I doubt we currently have such a tool; it would need to harness the code behind Special:GlobalUsage and run it on all the files in the category. If you are specifically looking for unused files, it could stop for a given file once it found a single use.

        • PetScan may work to some extent. In the "Page properties" tab, you need to set "Maximum links" to 0. Unless you personally created and hold the copyright for the logo, it is unlikely you have permission to release the image under such a license.

I provided sources from Brill Publishers, an academic source, to show that two religious denominations do exist. But this editor seems to believe that only the largest religious sects are real, and the rest are fake. I'm not sure how to handle this. Both sects have corresponding wikipedia pages by the way. In some case, shia or sunni muslim claim that to avoid the fitna or to claim that their movement is the true islam. Just to add ChrilleL, I'm not sure if you are interested in writing primarily for the English Wikipedia or the Swedish Wikipedia, but if it's English, you can use en:Template:OSM Location map in articles. It won't give you street view, but it will help to populate articles with useful media especially where none else exists. It doesn't look like it's been transferred over to Swedish, but if you know someone there who is particularly technically inclined, they can probably import it there too. Good luck on your articles! @Shruti20111986: You haven't provided a license for the image. We only hold free media here, and everything must meet the following four criteria:
  • Republication and distribution must be allowed.
  • Publication of derivative work must be allowed.
  • Commercial use of the work must be allowed.
  • The license must be perpetual (non-expiring) and non-revocable.
There is a list of allowable licenses here. Please add one of these to the image. If you don't want to license your image under these terms, add {{SD|G7}} to the page, and we will delete the image.

Additionally, unless you own the copyright to the image, you must get the copyright holder to contact COM:OTRS to confirm the image is licensed under the stated license. Assuming the ownership of an account

I believe that this is still a problem. Occasionally, a user that seemingly belongs to an organization uploads fair use files and claims that the release the file under a cc-by license. Should we assume that they are indeed the organization or should sysops block them per COM:UPOL, tag the image and ask them to send in their permission and verify their account in the mean time? Hey Minorax. Commons actually does allow accounts named after organizations as a matter of course. Though having a shared account is still prohibited by the terms of use. So it's not all exactly consistent. However, regardless of what the name of an account is, we do not presume that they represent a company, simply because they seem to claim so on-wiki. If they should like to upload official images owned by the organization, they will need to either verify the image, verify the account, or both. GMGtalk 12:40, 31 December 2019 (UTC)

@Minorax: Yes, they should need to be verified. Otherwise we should nominate their uploads for DR pending verification. We give more leeway to own work uploads by individuals where we have no reason to suspect anything is out of place (e.g., the image is not available online, the original meta data is in-tact, the user credits their SUL rather than some other real name). But we would not give this same leeway to uploads that seem to be of obvious corporate ownership. Having said that, blocking may not be rendered preventative unless they ignore the guidance given, and continue to upload official files without verification. They could just give up and never come back, in which case we probably wouldn't even notice most of the time whether the account ended up blocked or not.
You also have to consider that a seemingly official account may actually be just a fan account. You know, User:Marvel-Comics1 may just be a teenager that really likes Marvel Comics, doesn't understand fair/free use, and wants to upload images of their favorite characters. Of course, we wouldn't allow them to continue to upload copyright violations, but when warned, they may just go off and register User:JamesThomas1998 instead. Dating File:Άγιος Απόστολος ο Νέος.jpg

I'm looking through the files at Commons:Deletion requests/Files uploaded by Ελ Γκρέκο, and I'm really having trouble making heads or tails of this one in particular. From what I can tell, it's an image of Saint Apostolos of St. Laurence, an Orthodox saint, but one who (surprisingly) doesn't seem to have any article anywhere other than in Greek. Either that, or the Greek article has been wrongly isolated in Wikidata. It's easy enough to say "it looks pretty darn old", and it can be found in several places online, but the lot of them look like amateurish blogs and the like, and nothing I'd be comfortable pulling a date from. Long story short, I'm not entirely sure how we can go about putting any date on this at all, even though it is very probably hundreds of years old. Anybody have any ideas?   • @Soyabeancurd123: Typically you cannot do this. If the image is copyrighted (and most works created in recent decades are copyrighted from the moment of creation, under the Berne Convention), then only the holder of the copyright can grant a suitable license to use on Commons. Typically, for photographs of living people, most of the Wikipedias would have exactly the same standard on this as Commons.
  • If these people appear at times in public near where you are, you can take photos yourself and upload them with an appropriate license. - Jmabel ! talk 02:45, 31 December 2019 (UTC)

Riyadh International Book Fair معرض الرياض الدولي للكتاب

I'm trying to find an illustration of the Riyadh International Book Fair with a suitable license (a random draft article for creation I'm trying to help a new editor with). There are some at https://www.flickr.com/photos/150127074@N03/, but trying to upload them with the Wizard gets me "A file identical to this file ([[:$1]]) has previously been deleted. You should check that file's [https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:Log/delete?type=delete&page={{urlencode:$1|WIKI}} deletion history]. If you disagree with the reason for deletion, please make an [[Commons:Undeletion requests|undeletion request]] instead of re-uploading." I quote literally: there is unformatted wikitext displayed in the Upload Wizard interface. Obviously I don't want to upload inadmissible material, but this message was not very helpful: I have no idea what the files were previously called, so I cannot look up why they were deleted.

The two would not upload, with the above error message, are the files that the Wizard auto-called 36305718296_7d732fe889_o.jpg and 35953427530_33454a0bf9_o.jpg, and Flickr2Commons (which failed silently) called 8a8bf95e87d26407d6e9d390ea4393aa (36305718296).jpg and Nic6195538 (35953427530).jpg. In more human-readable form: the link I gave in my first post will show a small set of images, including
  1. a group of women walking into the book fair, two on their cell phones, the center one in niqab and carrying a silver handbag
  2. a group of black-clad young women taking selfies with an author
I don't want to upload the others if there is reason to doubt that the licensor is the photographer. Seriously, this event reportedly attracted half a million people last year, systemic bias aside, someone must have a usable photo... HLHJ (talk) 23:16, 8 December 2019 (UTC)
All is now clear. I did not get that error message, or any error message; the background around the images turned red, though. Thank you, Lotje! It's about as close as we have, but it looks nothing like the Riyadh event, where the main interest is international publishers with books not usually available in SA. I can't think of a suitable tie-in caption, but feel free to add it if you can. Sadly, we just don't have many images from Saudi Arabia; oddly, too, in this case, as the government is very keen on publicizing the event. Apparently there is not the same awareness of open licenses as at the Tasnim News Agency. I've added photo-req to the page, and the not-very-active Wikiproject. Founding of Melbourne image

Hi. I am trying to upload a higher quality version of File:Ac.earlymelb.jpg, which I have cropped from the original at State Library of Victoria.[16][17] The author isn't specified and the exact date of creation isn't known but the site claims it is out of copyright. The image depicts events in 1835 and a replica of the image was published in New York in September 1885; so there is a 50 year window of creation. As the author, country of origin and date of creation are unknown, what would be the best copyright tags (or set of tags) to apply when uploading? Hey Daliwong. Unfortunately, things like personal experience and first-hand recollections are not acceptable as source on Wikipedia. If no one has published the information previously in things like books, magazines and newspapers, then I'm afraid your only recourse is to be the person who publishes the information in those types of things. Wikipedia cannot cite something that is unpublished, and Wikipedia cannot include information that cannot be cited.
As to the images, I'm afraid that owning a physical copy of the photo, just like owning a physical copy of the latest blockbuster movie that you bought at the store, doesn't actually mean you own the intellectual property rights to the copyright for it. If you didn't take the photos, and don't know who did, then it's likely they cannot be uploaded here, because the person who took the photos would own the copyright, and would need to be the ones that released them under a free license. That is, unless there is reason to believe that they are so old they have fallen into the public domain, which usually requires that they were taken before 1924, or that the person who took them has been dead 70 years.   • @Daliwong: I don't have time to go through all of these, but just picking one for example: at File:Shawanga-1957-construction-new-inside.jpg you stated {{Own work}}. That is, you said you were the photographer. Now you are giving a much more roundabout story: that they were taken by a hotel employee, implicitly that they were taken as part of that person's job, that therefore copyrights were owned by the hotel, which was owned by your father, and that you are heir to his intellectual property rights. Presuming that it all true, it is also complicated: much too complicated to resolve by simple assertion without us really even being able to tell whose account this is.
  • I strongly suggest you go through the confidential process outlined at COM:OTRS to (1) demonstrate you are who you say you are and (2) make a formal statement of that chain of ownership and how you come to be in a position to own rights to these. Then the appropriate license tag would be {{Cc-by-sa-4.0-heirs}}, not {{self|cc-by-sa-4.0}}. - Jmabel ! talk 23:26, 31 December 2019 (UTC)
