Round 2 of Picture of the Year 2017 is open![edit]

You are receiving this message because you voted in R1 of the 2017 Picture of the Year contest, but not yet in R2.

Dear JackintheBox,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the second round of the 2017 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the twelfth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2017) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year were entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

There are two total rounds of voting. In the first round, you voted for as many images as you liked. In Round 1, there were 1475 candidate images. There are 58 finalists in Round 2, comprised of the top 30 overall as well as the top 2 from each sub-category.

In the final round, you may vote for a maximum of three images. The image with the most votes will become the Picture of the Year 2017.

Round 2 will end on 22 July 2018, 23:59 UTC.

Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee 11:33, 17 July 2018 (UTC)

Hello. Thanks for the map! Did you use mapchart.net to create it? If so, there is a license template for it:

Is there any way to get rid of the little circles on the map? I notice them on mapchart.net maps.

Also, could you add a bracket?: 100,000 - 150,000.

And maybe use different colors for the top 3 brackets. Blue, dark blue, and purple. Or look here:

So that it is easier to tell them apart. --Timeshifter (talk) 09:18, 15 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Timeshifter: Thanks for the tips! JACKINTHEBOXTALK 07:15, 6 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Timeshifter: The 'little circles' appear on the map to represent small island countries/territories around the world. These are only shown in the 'detailed' version of the world map on mapchart.net, and not on the 'simple' version. I often use the 'detailed' world map because most choropleth world maps I create contain data for some of these small countries/territories. JACKINTHEBOXTALK 07:19, 6 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Although I would disagree that the Falkland Islands should be represented by a little circle, as it is big enough to be shown on a world map with its proper shape. JACKINTHEBOXTALK 07:20, 6 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I haven't created any maps at mapchart.net, but I found some pages that might be helpful:
https://mapchart.net/feedback.html
https://mapchart.net/tutorial.html
I noticed some small circles on the simple world map too.
I don't see why the circles are needed at all. The maps now zoom in very far. The maps can be very big. So maybe the developer might create maps without circles. You could ask him. --Timeshifter (talk) 06:33, 8 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Timeshifter: I've contacted them through Feedback and included the following:
Could you please create a version of the detailed world map without any 'small circles' that represent small countries/territories, but instead all countries/territories are shown by their true size? (e.g. for Singapore, many Caribbean territories etc.)

Warning sign
This file may be deleted.
A file that you have uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, File:2019 Press Freedom Index seven colours.png, is a derivative work, containing an "image within an image". Examples of such works would include a photograph of a sculpture, a scan of a magazine cover, or a map that has been altered from the original. In each of these cases, the rights of the creator of the original must be considered, as well as those of the creator of the derivative work.

While the description page states who made this derivative work, it currently doesn't specify who created the original work, so the overall copyright status is unclear. If you did not create the original work depicted in this image, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright.

Please edit the file description and add the missing information, or the file may be deleted. If you created the original content yourself, enter this information as the source. If someone else created the content, the source should be the address to the web page where you found it, the name and ISBN of the book you scanned it from, or similar. You should also name the author, provide verifiable information to show that the content is in the public domain or has been published under a free license by its author, and add an appropriate template identifying the public domain or licensing status, if you have not already done so. Please add the required information for this and other files you have uploaded before adding more files. If you need assistance, please ask at the help desk. Thank you!

The source and author did not turn up properly because as I added the legend for the map to the description I accidentally added two extra closed curly brackets (}}) after the legend, which broke the formatting. Through the page history you can see that underneath the box under the 'Summary' section there is '|date=2020-01-08 |source=Own work |author=JackintheBox |permission= |other versions= }}'. This is now fixed. Thanks JACKINTHEBOXTALK 10:28, 8 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I see I've come to this rather late (I haven't been able to access Wikipedia for some time). I uploaded this file (with about 50 others depicting state seals with text removed) so they could be featured in a quiz I made on JetPunk [1] (JetPunk only accepts images uploaded on Wikimedia Commons). It seems that the images are only required to be on Commons upon creation of the quiz (they may be deleted on Commons afterwards but they would still feature on the quiz). Also this state seal of Rhode Island has since become outdated, so I'll have to upload a new version of the seal with text removed for my quiz some time in the future.
