Adding a photo

How do I add a photo to a page — Preceding unsigned comment added by Zeenatzeenat (talk • contribs) 21:19, 30 September 2018 (UTC)

Possible image vandalism

I'm unsure of how this particular image - File:Nelson Mandela consuming hamburger.png - should be treated. It was uploaded by a new user and added to a page on the English Wikipedia (see the diff), where I've just reverted the edit. The user's WP contribs are all disruptive, which raises questions about the image - it's probably inappropriately titled (it's obviously not THE en:Nelson Mandela, and may also be a copyvio (but I have no experience in doing image searches). Bahudhara (talk) 01:44, 1 October 2018 (UTC)

Thanks for reporting. I tagged it as a copyvio because it’s all over the internet, including in memes, variously Photoshopped, &c., but it could probably also be speedied as a hoax or vandalism. I noticed that one of the TinEye hits was captured from a file that got deleted from here (for likely copyvio) six years ago; see File:Fat man burger.jpg.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 02:16, 1 October 2018 (UTC)

How can I delete my image?

Yesterday I tried to upload an image as part of Wiki Loves Monuments 2018, but it wasn't listed there and I don't know why because I think there was still time. However, since my photo was not listed among the entries for the Wiki contest I would love to delete it from Wikipedia as soon as possible. I look forward to hearing how I can resolve this problem. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Paula Borkovic (talk • contribs) 07:33, 1 October 2018 (UTC)

Image of Belenski bridge

Hello! I need a suggestion about how to correct the name and the description of an image: this one says it depicts a bridge by Kolyo Ficheto over river Yantra (the so called Belenski bridge or Byala bridge) and that it is a Cultural Heritage of Bulgaria, but really it is not that bridge : the image really depicts the road bridge in front of Kolyo Ficheto bridge (you can see it for example on google maps). What is the best way to correct it? --Postcrosser (talk) 11:14, 27 September 2018 (UTC)

@Postcrosser: You can edit the description of the picture by using the "Edit" link near the top of the image page. To ask for the file to be renamed, either add the Rename template while editing it or use the "Move" item in the "More" menu, also at the top of the page. Commons' policy on file renaming explains when it's appropriate to rename files, and this case seems to fall squarely into criterion 3. --bjh21 (talk) 20:55, 27 September 2018 (UTC)
Thank you, I did as you suggested --Postcrosser (talk) 08:39, 1 October 2018 (UTC)

Photos of same object

How should photos of the same object be handled to indicate that they belong to each other? I have 2 cases in which there are photos of front and rear of the object. An extra category seems oversized for that. I can write it into the description, of course. But is there an established way which should be followed? Thank you. --Leserättin (talk) 06:49, 29 September 2018 (UTC)

I submitted two contest submissions...one disappeared

Hi, this is my first time submitting to the commons. I submitted two - the watchtower at Grand Canyon and the Pioneer Cemetery at the Grand Canyon. The second had many photos, but I didn't know I needed to name the files over and the errors were bouncing back until I missed the deadline. I worked for hours on it and then it just disappeared. Any thoughts? Thank you, Sally Richards — Preceding unsigned comment added by SallyRichards (talk • contribs) 07:40, 1 October 2018 (UTC)

@SallyRichards: You may add the us template to any of your photos that are missing it. That will put them in Category:Images from Wiki Loves Monuments 2018 in the United States.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 12:29, 1 October 2018 (UTC)
Best to add the two-letter state code (suffixed to “us” with a hyphen, us-az for example) as well, which will help the submission-sorters.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 03:15, 2 October 2018 (UTC)

Upload images to one of the Wikipedia terms

It was brought to my attention that there is a chapter about the Dolphin House, a hotel that has long since been abandoned in the settlement of Shavei Tzion. My late father was a manager for a few good years in the 1950s. These pictures are part of the archive of pictures left after his death and I would be happy to include only a small part of these pictures. I do not have names of photographers, I have no identifying detail except that in two pictures my father is himself in the picture. I would be happy if you would explain how to upload the images without having the necessary copyright information. I have a daughter's rights, that's all. Thanks

Previews of my SVGs are broken

I have uploaded some SVG files, some playing cards. The SVG is very simple, and works directly in the browser (so why do you even have png previews). However, the png previews are broken. Some of the cards have some of the artwork but most do not. How are you making the previews (inkscape has not trouble converting them to png). Is there a way I can "fix" these previews?

e.g. https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:2C.svg has symbols (clubs and digit "2") which simply do not show! — Preceding unsigned comment added by TheRealRevK (talk • contribs) 15:39, 8 July 2018 (UTC)

Update: The problem is the use of a "use" object without both "width" and "height" attributes. Sounds like a bug in the preview stuff. I am re-uploading my cards with added attributes. The original, smaller, files are at https://www.me.uk/cards/ — Preceding unsigned comment added by TheRealRevK (talk • contribs) 16:01, 9 July 2018 (UTC)

What is the difference between "Historical buses" and "Historical images of buses"?

What is the difference between "Historical buses" and "Historical images of buses"?--Kai3952 (talk) 08:33, 2 October 2018 (UTC)

With historical images of buses, the images themselves are old (see Category:Historical images for guidelines on these). For historical buses, the buses were historical when the images were made. For example, if there is a museum that has old buses in it and you take a photo there today, you could put it under historical buses (if the buses meet the definition of historical), but not under historical images (because the image would be new). Does that help? --Auntof6 (talk) 08:57, 2 October 2018 (UTC)
But how do I know if it is "Historical buses" or not?--Kai3952 (talk) 14:16, 2 October 2018 (UTC)
If you know it's old, use the category. If you don't know either way, no calamity to just call them "buses". - Jmabel ! talk 16:06, 2 October 2018 (UTC)

Russian Science Photo Competition

Коллеги, прошу совета.

В рамках проводимого НП «Викимедиа РУ» и телеканала Наука «Конкурса научных фотографий 2018» (см. https://ru.wikimedia.org/wiki/Конкурсы/Конкурс_научных_фотографий_2018) загрузил на Викисклад файл GVG 00.jpg, указав категорию «Images of people in science from Russian Science Photo Competition 2018».

— Preceding unsigned comment added by ComeToScience (talk • contribs) 12:28, 2 October 2018 (UTC)

How to define "Historical images"?

I have added "Historical images of bridges in Taiwan" category to Category:Changchun Bridge (1960), but I think the problem is: How to define "Historical images"?--Kai3952 (talk) 14:08, 2 October 2018 (UTC)

  • That doesn't make sense. The bridge survived until 2013. I wouldn't call a photo from 2010 "historical". (Though I should add: the term is vague, and I've never liked "historical" in category names.) Also, categories like that pretty much always belong on individual images, not categories for physical things. - Jmabel ! talk 16:10, 2 October 2018 (UTC)
  • For what it's worth, Category:Historical images says this: "This category is for non-contemporary photographs and other images such as old postcards or paintings (suggested deadline: pre-WW2), and for images of objects that do not exist anymore, or that have heavily changed in appearance since their depiction displayed here." --Auntof6 (talk) 23:16, 2 October 2018 (UTC)

Copyright help regarding File:Jockey Fernando Fernandez.jpg

Hello. Regarding a particular copyright infringement of my photo, I don't know what more I can say beyond what I put in the required information when I uploaded it. This photo is from my (the author's) personal family collection. My father owned the horse and is in the original picture. It is 77 years old and It has been in my fathers possession since 1941. It was taken by the official track photographer, J. Hernandez, Habana, Cuba, deceased since the fifties, and the track itself, has been defunct since 1968, and all relics of its existence were purged by the Cuban government. There is absolutely no reference to this photo, race or horse ANYWHERE online, as I have searched exhaustively for years, except on my own, personal website, camilomarin.com, where it has been available to view since 1998. I hardly think that anyone, anywhere can find this to be protected material. If it is a question of the source of this particular image, since I have multiple copies and edits in my computer, this may have been downloaded from my own page. Further, there are absolutely no photos of the subject anywhere else online except, again, on my own webpage. There are no heirs of the subject, either. Awaiting your response. Camilo Marin, Jr.

--Camilomarin (talk) 05:51, 3 October 2018 (UTC)

  • When the bot tagged it, you had given no indication of licensing at all.
  • Whether you can identify heirs, whether the race track exists, etc. have nothing to do with whether the photo is in the public domain, as you now state.
  • What year did the photographer die, which is presumably what is relevant to expiration of copyright (unless I'm missing something)? - Jmabel ! talk 16:17, 3 October 2018 (UTC)

Hi, I have uploaded a photo taken in Australia about 1930. I believe such images, taken in Australia before 1955 are copyright free. Tacoma Public Library Has Granted Permission to Publish Photo from Defunct Studio.

I have an email granting permission (with specific library attribution) to publish a photo from a photographic studio no longer in business. I can provide email. Is this sufficient? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Seabix (talk • contribs) 23:03, 4 October 2018 (UTC)

  • @Seabix: Is the work in copyright?
  • If so, who is the copyright holder?
  • The fact that the studio is defunct has little bearing on the matter, except that if they owned the copyright, and if the work is still in copyright the question would then be who their copyrights passed to when the studio closed. Unless they passed to the Tacoma Public Library, their permission is not relevant. If they did pass to the Tacoma Public Library, then what we'd need is a specific "free license" from them (not just a non-specific permission to publish); ideally that should come through the process described at COM:OTRS, although there are some workarounds. If someone other than that library holds the copyright, then that other entity is whose permission we would need. - Jmabel ! talk 00:10, 5 October 2018 (UTC)

I keep getting this message. 😣

Every time I try to upload a file on my wife's French best-friend's Nokia Lumia 730 Dual SIM (my "provisional" camera) I keep getting this message for only the first file if I try to upload more than one file at a time, is anyone else experiencing this? I didn't have any issue with it yesterday as it seems to have popped up today and it affects every attempt at uploading more than a single image at a time, the issue resolves itself if I re-select a file but it's still annoying. I test tried to see if this issue also happens on my Microsoft Lumia 950 XL phablet (using Microsoft Edge) and it didn't. I'm not sure if this is a device-related error or a browser-related error. Author change

Hi, Lets say for instance you upload files under the name "JamesMontomgery234" but for the author bit you link it as "LJM" (So it goes to JamesM but the text says LJM),
After a few years can you then change the author bit to a complete different unsername (Commons account) ?

Bear in mind the file history box below the image still has your old username,

Thanks, –Davey2010Talk 22:28, 4 October 2018 (UTC)

I would be somewhat suspicious should I notice such a change being made without explanation. But a clear ES and the presence of a template or note on the user page identifying it as an alt-account would allay such suspicions. Authorship and copyright pertain to a person, not to a WM account per se, so I can’t see anything inherently problematic about changing an author link unless there’s socking or block-evasion involved.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 00:43, 5 October 2018 (UTC)
Apologies Jmabel & Odysseus1479 I did try to be clear as possible,
Long story short Themunnery started to replace the author bit on all of their images from "Themunnery" to "emporer" citing privacy concerns, I objected and after we emailed each other they've created the account Emperor64 and have proceeded to change the author from PJM to Emperor64 and long story short I wasn't sure if they were correct in doing this considering there's a box directly below their image with their username,
Thanksm, –Davey2010Talk 03:04, 5 October 2018 (UTC)
It would, of course, be a lot cleaner if they did this from the account that originally specified the attribution, but if we are sure it's the same person, I wouldn't consider this a problem. The file history will show the old name, so if someone attributes it the old way on the web it shouldn't be a confusion. I wouldn't encourage changes like this, but I don't offhand see a policy being violated here. For what it's worth, early on for my own photos, I had just left the default that I would be attributed as User:Jmabel, but I soon realized that I wanted to be attributed by my actual name, and started changing even those early ones to say (deliberately suppressing wikification in the example here) Joe Mabel. That certainly is a change of attribution, so I guess I have a dog in this fight. - Jmabel ! talk 06:20, 5 October 2018 (UTC)

Question regarding expired works

So I have uploaded an image that is a screenshot of an actor from the episode of a TV series that is in the public domain, though it is only in the public domain because the copyright expired. I used the "PD-US-not renewed" template, but I was wondering if this is the proper one or if another would be more suitable/describes it properly, I just want to be sure. -NowIsntItTime (talk) 01:04, 6 October 2018 (UTC)

  • Very hard to answer without specific example. If the episode was from 1963 or earlier and you have evidence that copyright was not renewed, then this is the correct tag; otherwise, you are most likely mistaken about this being in the public domain. - Jmabel ! talk 04:52, 6 October 2018 (UTC)
Sorry for the lack of an example. The episode was from The Andy Griffith Show called "Aunt Bea's Medicine Man"; it was released in 1963 but the copyright expired. So it is the correct tag then and I should be good? - NowIsntItTime (talk) 14:09, 6 October 2018 (UTC)
As long as the copyright for the episode really wasn't renewed, I believe so. - Jmabel ! talk 15:54, 6 October 2018 (UTC)

Images in public domain deleted

I uploaded a series of images:

All of them were from the New Zealand history webpage Hawks Bay Knowledge Bank that discussed New Zealander John Caulton and his service in the RAF. According to the webpage, all of the images were in the public domain for non-commercial use. Included on the web page where each were located was the statement: "This work is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial 4.0 International License."

After I added them the images were all tagged for deletion. I tried to explain that the permission I gave when uploading the images was supported by the page they were obtained from, but they were all deleted anyway.

I have no experience in working through these problems. My primary interest is in writing biographical pages or history pages in wikipedia, and the images were to support that work. I did review the Commons:OTRS page. Apparently I needed someone to provide a written permission? Could someone take a look at the page the images were derived from, click on one of the images, look at the permission provided there and see if I made an error in uploading them, or give me a tip in how I might use them, if at all. Thanks for your consideration.Gunbirddriver2 (talk) 23:59, 6 October 2018 (UTC)

Also, in general: except for (arguably) CC-0, a CC license does not make an image "public domain". Besides being NC, the license mentioned here requires attribution, which is a long way from public domain. - Jmabel ! talk 17:39, 7 October 2018 (UTC)

Problem with my svg image colors

So I updated a map and uploaded it. On the file page view it seems to be colorless. However, when I open it, I can see the original colors back again. Copyright of Photos Created for Client by "Photographer for Hire"

We very often need to upload photos provided by a "photographer for hire". As the contractor of the "photographer for hire" Copyright law seem to assume that unless there is a written contract otherwise, the contractor by virtue of payment of consideration for the photos acquired by contractor from the "photographer for hire", owns the copyright of such photos.

There seems to be no notification template which cover this circumstance? Should not a "copyright circumstance template" to cover this situation be created and accepted by the wiki-commons community? Otherwise, how should this be handled if no new "copyright template circumstance" is warranted ? — Preceding unsigned comment added by CorporateMapWiki (talk • contribs) 02:40, 27 August 2018 (UTC)

Is this image in public domain?

I found this image on Flickr (marked as public domain) of musician Alicia Keys via the Wikipedia:Public domain image resources. The Google Reverse Image search from free-images.com shows the image being sold on Getty Images, naturally. I Googled Getty Images and public domain and found articles like this noting that sites like Getty can legally commercialize photos from the public domain. So is the image actually in the public domain? How can I verify whether or not it is? Also, if an image is in the public domain but no author is available it cannot be uploaded on Commons? Lapadite77 (talk) 19:30, 8 October 2018 (UTC)

  • I would say that inclusion on Flickr is pretty blatant "Flickrwashing" (illegitimately claiming a particular copyright status on Flickr). I literally cannot imagine a basis for that image to be public domain. The Flickr account in question appears to be full of images that look like likely copyright violations.
  • For what it's worth, although irrelevant for this photo: often, authorship is part of what determines whether a particular image is public domain or not, but in cases where authorship is not relevant to public domain status (e.g. a painting from the 18th Century; a 1906 ad from a U.S. newspaper), we will happily host a public domain without knowing the author. - Jmabel ! talk 19:44, 8 October 2018 (UTC)

images with digital watermark

I like to place many images of Dutch artists on Wikimedia Commons. I can find them in the Dutch archive RKD; They all have a digital watermark in the image, so how can I use them in a proper way, especially when did not died later than 70 years ago? Is it enough to give the link of the page of the Archive RKD, in the description? Like this one: https://rkd.nl/nl/explore/images/record?filters%5Bkunstenaar%5D=Toorop%2C+Charley&query=&start=13? Please, will you give me advice. Thanks! --FotoDutch (talk) 07:46, 9 October 2018 (UTC)

@FotoDutch: Both paintings (and more of your uploaded paintings) are attributed to Dutch painter Charley Toorop, who died in 1955. Assuming she painted them in The Netherlands, per Commons:Copyright rules by territory/Netherlands her work won't be PD until 1955+70+1=2026. The referenced website has no indications of a free license. Please do not upload any more images of works of Dutch artists that died after 1947 unless you have a free license to do so (see COM:L for details). Unless you find appropriate licenses, I suggest you tag all of your uploads of her work as COM:CSD#U1 mistaken understanding of COM:L.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 12:04, 9 October 2018 (UTC)
Thanks for your fast reaction Jeff G. But notice please that the image is edited with digital watermarks all over the image. Who wants an image with watermarks all over in the image? And how about the copyrights in that case: The Dutch RKD Archive from which I have the images is an official Dutch Archive of Art History and edit all her images online in this way: covering with watermarks, to protect the copyright.FotoDutch (talk) 12:39, 9 October 2018 (UTC)
@FotoDutch: I have noticed the watermarks. We generally do not want such watermarked images, unless no better images are available. Do they watermark the images of PD artworks, too?   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 13:43, 9 October 2018 (UTC)

Shortcut, redirect or alias?

I categorize a lot of artillery and aircraft images and I notice there are some categories which don't have the best names but have the content I'm looking for. Is there a way to create a shortcut to another category? I see there's redirect but that looks like it lists one category as a subdirectory of another category. It also looks like it requests moving files to the new category. I would just like to have a shortcut from "12 cm Luftminenwerfer M16" to "Kriegspressequartier Alben 1914-1918 (12 cm Luftminenwerfer M16)". Because nobody is going to remember a category with that long a name and the search function does a poor job of long search strings. Or should I just copy the files to a new category named "12 cm Luftminenwerfer M16"? Snowdawg (talk) 20:42, 9 October 2018 (UTC)

Category:Kriegspressequartier Alben 1914-1918 (12 cm Luftminenwerfer M16) is an intersection of Category:12 cm Luftminenwerfer M16 and Category:Kriegspressequartier Alben 1914-1918 (Luftminenwerfer). As such, I think that it should be a child of both categories. Images categorized in it should not be categorized in either of the parent categories, due to COM:OVERCAT.
A case could also be made for the whole tree of Category:Kriegspressequartier Alben 1914 - 1918 to be a hidden maintenance category. In this case, the images should be categorized both in the corresponding maintenance category and the "real" category. I'd prefer the first solution, however. --rimshottalk 22:04, 9 October 2018 (UTC)

Updating logo for my company's Wiki page

Hi all. I'm told that I cannot upload the most recent version of my company's logo due to the fact that I do not have enough edits/posts made to wikipedia. Is there a better way to handle this, or do I have to find someone that has more posts than I do? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ccotton17 (talk • contribs) 21:09, 9 October 2018 (UTC)

Hi. If the logo has changed, it would be better to upload it under a new file name, so that both files can exist side by side. Does the logo consist of more than text and (very) simple shapes? If not, it might be copyrighted and the copyright holder would need to release it under a free license. Some Wikipedias, English Wikipedia in particular, offer ways to upload non-free content (see en:WP:NOTFREE for full details). Wikipedia Commons only accepts content that is free for everyone, for every purpose. --rimshottalk 21:40, 9 October 2018 (UTC)
Hey Ccotton17. You can file a request at en:WP:FFU and someone (probably me) can figure out the specifics about how to upload it according to policy. GMGtalk 21:59, 9 October 2018 (UTC)
@Ccotton17: , if you are the owner of the company or the designer of the logo (or just the owner of its copyright) and won't mind it if everyone can do with it as they please you could also send OTRS permission to have it uploaded to Wikimedia Commons so it could also be used in other language versions of Wikipedia and Wikidata. Warning: any image here may also be used commercially, you can however demand attribution re-users may not claim that you(r company) endorses them if you so wish to allow the logo to be uploaded here. --Donald Trung 『徵國單』 (No Fake News 💬) (WikiProject Numismatics 💴) (Articles 📚) 22:51, 9 October 2018 (UTC)

Sometimes the servers get behind on updating thumbnails; there are caches in the ‘back end’ as well as in your browser. You can encourage an update by purging the page, but occasionally you just have to wait (rarely more than a few hours) for the new previews to be generated.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 07:29, 10 October 2018 (UTC)

@Konalouisa: there is no problem not having a user page, and you haven’t done anything wrong; your contributions are the principal indicator of your presence on this site, and your talk page is where others can go to contact you. Your user page is a “red link” simply because you haven’t created it yet. Feel free to put some information about what you do here, or would like to do, but it’s not required. See COM:PSP#User pages, galleries and categories for the user-page policies, and perhaps browse through some other users’ pages for examples of content & design.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 07:21, 10 October 2018 (UTC)

Removed image

I uploaded an image of Prof. Tryggve Mettinger, which has been officially and explicitly licenced by its creator for the present purposes. However, it was removed (I did not know which of the licenses to check, since the permission is in "old school" physical writing, so I checked none but wrote a description of the picture being legally used). To do so, simply add four tildes (~~~~) at the end of your comments. Your user name or IP address (if you are not logged in) and a timestamp will then automatically be added when you save your comment. Signing your comments helps people to find out who said something and provides them with a link to your user/talk page (for further discussion). I want to upload a logo to commons but there's an accompanying text that says it may not be used for commercial purposes without permission. Is commons included in "commercial purposes"? --Dutchy45 (talk) 22:05, 11 October 2018 (UTC)

  • Commons itself is non-commercial, but to keep re-use relatively simple, we only accept content that is licensed for commercial purposes as well as non-commercial. (Actually, it's bit subtler than that, because it's OK if commercial use is limited by trademark, or by personality rights, but not if it's limited by copyright.) If the log is complicated enough to be copyrightable, and if the copyright-holder grants only a non-commercial license, then we can't host it. - Jmabel ! talk 23:39, 11 October 2018 (UTC)
    • Moi @Dutchy45: , what you should do in this case is contact the organisation and ask them if they are willing to license it for commercial (re-)use and if they would e-mail the OTRS team to confirm this. I've actually had quite some success acquiring OTRS permission from several websites this way but not everyone is thrilled to have their images on Wikimedia Commons, but it's always worth a try (if you really want the image here), otherwise you can upload it locally to a Wikipedia as they do accept fair use (I know for certain that the Dutch Wikipedia doesn't, though), but I prefer for files to be on Wikimedia Commons as they're then not limited to Wikipedia. If the logo is very simple (as in only text or nothing creative) it could qualify as PD-ineligible. --Donald Trung 『徵國單』 (No Fake News 💬) (WikiProject Numismatics 💴) (Articles 📚) 18:13, 12 October 2018 (UTC)

Translating template parameters

I want to add the name of a country, passed as a parameter, to a template message. Thus:

would render as

Sample Germany text.

That is easy enough. The English version of the sampletext template is something like:

Sample {country} text.

But if I translate the template message into French, I want it to render as

Exemple de texte en Allemagne.

Is there a standard method of taking a country name given in English and converting it to that name translated into another language? Aymatth2 (talk) 14:26, 12 October 2018 (UTC)

You can use Country to convert country codes to country names, i.e. renders as "Germany". If you have a parameter named country and you know it will always be English country names you could try {{{country}|nolink=yes}}. For example, if country were "Germany" that would resolve to which renders as "Germany". —RP88 (talk) 14:49, 12 October 2018 (UTC)
That answers my question. So "{{#ifexist: Template:{country} | {{{country}|1={}|nolink={} }} | {country} }}" renders as "{page}|{display}" if country=Germany and the user's language is French. If country=Erewhon it renders as "{page}|{display}". There are still kinks. If country=USA, it gives "{page}|{display}", but that is a minor issue. Thank you very much for the quick response. Aymatth2 (talk) 16:46, 12 October 2018 (UTC)
The template used by Country for country code 'US' is United States, not USA. I think you're better off changing your template message to take a country code as its input parameter, rather than an English country name. If you insist on using English country names as the values for your input parameter, and you're worried about arbitrary (possibly even unrelated) templates being invoked to display the country name, you might consider using a switch statement to convert English country names into a country code, and then calling Country with that code. —RP88 (talk) 07:59, 13 October 2018 (UTC)

Re-uploading image with correct copyright

I uploaded an image of Joy Division from here a while ago from Flickr and it was accepted. Soon after it was taken down after a user realized it wasn't uploaded with the correct author (in this case Kevin Cummins); I didn't know that at the time I uploaded it. He found the image here and I would like to re-upload the same image (image 10/14 from that site) from NME but this time attribute it to the correct author. However, I'm not sure what the correct copyright mark would be and would like to know which one. Thanks. BeatlesLedTV (talk) 19:02, 11 October 2018 (UTC)

  • I'm confused. Are you saying that Kevin Cummins (or NME) has granted a license? Or are you saying something else, in which case, what? Because if the person with the Flickr account who posted it isn't the copyright holder, I see no particular reason to think that any license claimed there is accurate. - Jmabel ! talk 23:33, 11 October 2018 (UTC)

Question about cultural monument ID's

Hello, I am wondering how the cultural monument ID's are assigned, specifically for Pakistan. Is it by the person who uploads the files? I am finding some wild inconsistencies, resulting in confusion on my part and a need to often change the names of categories. Also, sometimes the category name is in one of the country's languages, while the wikibox uses a different name used on Wikipedia. Is there a policy about what to do in these situations? The URL is too long for openplaques.org to use, so I'd like to change the URL to be shorter. Is it most appropriate to rename this file or use a redirect? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Millerdl (talk • contribs) 09:40, 14 October 2018 (UTC)

  • @Millerdl: Signing your posts on talk pages is required and it is a Commons guideline to sign your posts on deletion requests, undeletion requests, and noticeboards. To do so, simply add four tildes (~~~~) at the end of your comments. Your user name or IP address (if you are not logged in) and a timestamp will then automatically be added when you save your comment. Signing your comments helps people to find out who said something and provides them with a link to your user/talk page (for further discussion). Thank you.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 11:44, 14 October 2018 (UTC)
I made redirect File:Charles David Keeling plaque.jpg, does that work for you?   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 11:44, 14 October 2018 (UTC)
Thank you for trying this. Unfortunately it seems that the redirect doesn't work with openplaques, would it be possible to move the content to that new URL? Millerdl (talk) 08:59, 15 October 2018 (UTC)
I've renamed the file. In future, you can request renaming using the "Move" link in the "More" menu. Criterion 1 (uploader request) covers this sort of case. --bjh21 (talk) 10:47, 15 October 2018 (UTC)
@Millerdl: What is this openplaques that doesn't work with long URLs and redirects? I'd hardly call such behavior "open".   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 14:16, 16 October 2018 (UTC)

St Donat's Castle

I'd be grateful if someone could help me out by renaming the above. It shows St Donat's Castle, in Glamorgan, South Wales. It is incorrectly labelled as St Donats Church. My use of it is yesterday's TFA caused some comment, en:Talk:St Donat's Castle#Mis-named photo, and it would be really helpful if it could be renamed. Many thanks. Deletion request backlog

Is there a huge backlog on deletion requests, or something? I dobbed in Commons:Deletion_requests/File:Ferose_002.png in July, and it still seems to be around; and if I look down Commons:Deletion_requests/2018/07/21 many of the other files seem like fairly open and shut cases. Boothsift
QI are images of some technical quality, photographicly speaking. The must be from one of our volunteers, importations, and digitalisations do not count.
VI is a little bit trick, are images that illustrate some scope, 99% of the times, the "best" illustration of some specific category. Image that you want to illustrate a building, the "best" photo of exterior could be one VI, and the "best" of the interior could also be a VI. Volunteers that are evaluating this tag are very... never mind, they do not accept anything but photos, draws and charts. For them, and only for them videos are not images...
Hope that you understood

Using Move to request changes to filenames

Move seems to have stopped working. I want to correct a typo in a filename. But after making the edit to the filename, when I try to add the reason, the drop-down does not show any choices. The choice I would make is "At original uploader's request" but neither that or any other option is visible. I've tried with both Chrome and Edge.Kognos (talk) 21:30, 16 October 2018 (UTC)

@Kognos: Please see Commons:File renaming. Unlike Wikipedia articles, files at Commons can only be moved by certain user groups, i.e. stewards, administrators and approved file movers. You don't have any such rights so you can't use the move function for files. To request a new name for a file because of a typo, please add a template to the file page. This will alert the file movers or admins to perform the task. Or you could just point me at the file in question and I'll fix it (can't do this tomorrow though due to travelling all day). De728631 (talk) 21:44, 16 October 2018 (UTC)
@De728631: I understand that I can't move the file immediately and have to make a request to a mover to do so. But I have done this before, several times - I have clicked More|Move and this has given me a dialogue box where I can request the move and give a reason. More|Move still does give me the dialogue box, but the drop-down menu does not work. This seems to be a technical issue. Kognos (talk) 22:47, 16 October 2018 (UTC)
Perhaps you didn't move files in the past but pages in other namespace like user subpages or galleries and categories? Technically you should not have been able to move files at all. De728631 (talk) 18:42, 18 October 2018 (UTC)

@Bjh21: I am not able to use it. Why? --Boothsift (talk) 00:53, 18 October 2018 (UTC)
@Boothsift: I don't know. Which of them are you trying to use, and how is it failing? I've noticed some comments recently that CommonsHelper isn't working, and someone recently had a problem as a new user of Geograph2Commons, but Geograph2Commons has worked fine for me in the past week. Inaccurate picture name

There's a picture here on the Commons that claims to show a Mr Mikhail Borodin with Chiang Kai-shek. The problem is, the person in the picture is clearly not Borodin, and the source of the picture is questionable. There are many other pictures from the relevant time frame to compare with this one, and the result is very clear. How do I go about getting the image corrected, so as to avoid spreading false information? Perhaps someone can do it for me? RGloucester (talk) 03:34, 19 October 2018 (UTC)

On the source page there’s a head-shot that looks a lot more like your example (fourth one down), yet despite the discrepancy in appearance it identifies both as the same person (鮑羅廷 1882–1951). Strange. But I’m not good at recognizing faces in photos through changes of hairstyle, lighting, &c., so I wouldn’t swear it’s a misidentification myself. Anyway, @RGloucester, Commons policy is pretty non-committal about content, and the preferred tack is to tag with something like Factual accuracy, discuss on the Talk page or with the uploader, and so on. That said, the renaming guidelines allow for “correct[ing] obvious errors” (criterion #3); if you’re sure this qualifies, see the how-to section there.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 04:47, 19 October 2018 (UTC)
Well, the problem is the source is not reliable for identifying the relevant subject. There are many pictures of Borodin from that period...his moustache and hair are consistent. It would not even be possible for him to have shaved his head, as he appears in other pictures from that year with relatively full hair. More importantly, the facial shape is wrong. Mr Alex Shih provided this picture, where the bearded man appears with Sun Yat-sen and some other Soviet advisors. Unfortunately, we haven't be able to figure out the fellow's name. One thing we do know, though, is that it isn't Borodin...but I suppose all I can do is apply for a file move. RGloucester (talk) 05:05, 19 October 2018 (UTC)

Misreferenced photographs in Wikipedia Commons

Good evening,

I have recently posted in Wikipedia Commons photograpghs which I thought could fall into the originality criteria. Therefore, I listed myself as the author. I tried to reference the original source of the images prior to modification anyway, but it seems to have been insuficient. Is there a more proper way to provide this information that I do not know of, or am I simply not allowed to use these images freely? In any case, what can I do to solve the problem? Any help would be deeply appreciated. Thank you! — Preceding unsigned comment added by BQUB1819-CPalom (talk • contribs) 19:27, 21 October 2018 (UTC)

  • @Saintbully13: It's not clear what you are trying to do. Are you trying to include an image that is already on Commons (in which case see en:Help:Pictures, or are you trying to grab a picture from somewhere else on the Internet? If it's the latter, then probably this is not OK. Most content on the Internet is copyrighted and does not offer any sort of free license. However, you could try e-mailing—a link is in the sidebar at User talk:Aejozwik, under “Tools”. Or you could simply leave a message on that page; if the user happened to set up e-mail notifications, an alert message will be sent. (But two other messages have received no answer there.) Note that the user uploaded several pictures of the site, which may be seen at Palace in Mężenin. Good luck!—Odysseus1479 (talk) 22:48, 22 October 2018 (UTC)

Images with CC 3.0 licence deleted

I recently uploaded three images which have the CC 3.0 licence e.g. this one http://www.nzfashionmuseum.org.nz/c/costume-to-face-the-world-of-the-commonplace/?f=&e=&s= And they were deleted. I don't understand why, as this licence is listed as OK to use on WP. Can someone explain? TIA. MurielMary (talk) 20:51, 16 October 2018 (UTC)

@MurielMary: These were published under a non-commercial licence at that website (note the CC-by-NC-sa bit). Uploads at Commons, however, must be free for any purpose including commercial reuse. This is why we don't accept such non-commercial restrictions. De728631 (talk) 21:17, 16 October 2018 (UTC)
Muriel,
Just complementing, free licenses by definition do not accept any kind of restrictions of used, non commercial licenses as cc-by NC, are not allowed.
Here is the whole explanation of why NC are not free.
And ND, non derivative also is not free, so not all Creative Commons licenses are free.
But, did you know that we work with digitalisation of museums? Check out outreach:GLAM, maybe you cold convince the museum to change the license to a free one.

Thumbnail is much darker and loses detail compared to original

Photos should not be PNG
There I fixed it

This thumbnail has lost a lot of detail and seems much darker than the original file. I tried regenerating thumbnails and reloading the cache with no effect. I haven't noticed this effect with other thumbnails, even of images with similar characteristics. It seems there's something about this file that is causing suboptimal results with whatever scaling algorithm is being used. Other thumbnail sizes (e.g., 360, right) do not exhibit such a marked darkening. Is there any easy fix for this? Sarcasmboy (talk) 05:40, 19 October 2018 (UTC)

@Sarcasmboy: fixed, do not use png for photos. Jpg files get sharpened, png and svg do not because sharpening hurts text which is often found in those formats. The darkening is a bug I've seen before which has already been reported, doesn't happen with jpg either. - Alexis Jazz ping plz 12:01, 20 October 2018 (UTC)

Incorrect Attribution

Hi, A photo of mine has been taken from my Flickr account, https://www.flickr.com/photos/architectgja/18216344554/ and uploaded here on Wiki https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Tauri_competition_1.jpg with attribution incorrectly given to the subject in the photo (Tauri Vahesaar - slackliner). Could you tell me how to correct this please? I have periodically found my images being mined from Flickr and reposted under different attributions, so it is somewhat of a concern. @ArchitectGJA: : thank you! It’s your choice what licence to apply (see the licensing policy; I believe the default for images here is the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0—that’s what was inappropriately placed by the uploader. Ideally the Flickr page should be updated to show a free licence; not sure what choices you have there, but I believe they include an older (but quite similar) version of the same licence. You might want to use a matching version here. (The BY part indicates that attribution is required. Note that the NC and ND versions are not allowed here.) If you don’t want to do that, we would need to verify that you are the owner of the Flickr account, which can be done confidentially through COM:OTRS. In the meantime I’ll fix the attribution on the file page, if nobody else has already. Thanks again for your generosity under the circumstances, which should not have arisen.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 04:00, 23 October 2018 (UTC)

Ralph M. Steinman image use on WP articles

Hi, I would like to use an image (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Ralph_M._Steinman.jpg) with a so-called Non-free use rationale. It will be used and added to the List of McGill University people of which Mr. Steinman was an alumnus, to identify him. I see that this same jpeg image is used similarly/for the same purpose in the List of Canadian Jews. Besides uploading it into the List of McGill University people, is there anything else that needs to be done to justify and indicate a fair use rationale so that it can be used there? I do not see any for this image under the List of Canadian Jews. Kindly advise. Thanks.Tansyderby (talk) 16:50, 25 October 2018 (UTC)

First of all, this is Wikimedia Commons where fair use content is not allowed at all and we don't have any such articles, so you might want to have asked your question at the English Wikipedia where the file is hosted. As to the List of Canadian Jews, I'm afraid I had to remove the photograph from this article because the file did not have a fair use rationale for that specific page and would likely not get one either. A core principle of the fair use policy at the English Wikipedia is minimal use of non-free images. This means that fair use at the English Wikipedia is not allowed for image galleries and collective illustrations – especially not if there is already a main biographical article where the same photo is presented to identify the person. With the same reasoning, please do not use the picture for the McGill list either. De728631 (talk) 19:25, 25 October 2018 (UTC)
Thanks for all the helpful information you supplied. I thought the List of Canadian Jews used that image legitimately, but then you said "no" and you had to take it off from there. So there is really no use asking about its possible use in the McGill list. I appreciate your reply and explanation.Tansyderby (talk) 21:17, 25 October 2018 (UTC)
@De728631: Hi, again, I was trying to upload this image (from https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:RMS.jpg) into the https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_McGill_University_people (kindly scroll down to the third to last image box]. However, it is automatically redirecting and showing a weird logo (from https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Rashtriya_Military_School_Chail_(crest).jpg) instead of that image. Would you know why? Could you help correct it so that the actual image that shows up there is the one from https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:RMS.jpg? Thank you so much for your help again.Tansyderby (talk) 12:50, 26 October 2018 (UTC)
@Tansyderby: the page File:RMS.jpg on the English Wikipedia was a redirect to File:Rashtriya_Military_School_Chail_(crest).jpg, which had been moved to a different file name. The presence of a file locally available on Wikipedia overrode File:RMS.jpg from Wikimedia Commons. I've deleted the redirect, so the proper RMS.jpg now shows up on Wikipedia. clpo13(talk) 16:33, 26 October 2018 (UTC)

@Tansyderby: You're welcome.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 19:45, 26 October 2018 (UTC)
(via edit conflict) A couple of things: (1) please, when referring here to a file, use File:RMS.jpg (that's :File:RMS.jpg), not the URL. Similarly en:List of McGill University people (:en:List of McGill University people)(2) Back to your issue: en-wiki apparently already has its own en:File:RMS.jpg, which is a redirect to the logo in question, and hides our File:RMS.jpg on en-wiki. A bot then substituted the target of the redirect. The best solution here would be to move our File:RMS.jpg to something more mnemonic, which it looks like User:Jeff G. has already done: File:R. M. Steinman.jpg. "RMS.jpg" is an almost meaningless filename in any case, you shouldn't use names like that in the future. - Jmabel ! talk 16:37, 26 October 2018 (UTC)
@Jmabel: Thanks for all your suggestions. I did not realize these, especially file-naming guidelines, until now. 'Will keep them in mind so that I do not encounter the same issues the next time around.Tansyderby (talk) 17:01, 26 October 2018 (UTC)

Problem when cropping

I uploaded a new version of File:Academy Image.jpg after cropping the white space. It is displaying correctly on this page but the thumbnail on the file description page has been squashed. What's happening? MSGJ (talk) 10:04, 29 October 2018 (UTC)

Same Categories

Hi Anybody! Please see the categories: Category:Miranjani and Category:Miranjani Peak. These are same. Please delete Category:Miranjani Peak and put its files in the Category:Miranjani. Thank You. PakEditor (talk) 03:45, 23 October 2018 (UTC)

✓ Done. I added the parent categories from Category:Miranjani Peak to Category:Miranjani, replaced Category:Miranjani Peak with a Category redirect, moved all the category members using Commons:Cat-a-lot, linked Category:Miranjani to Miranjani (Q3695170) on Wikidata, and added a Wikidata infobox to Category:Miranjani. --bjh21 (talk) 13:48, 23 October 2018 (UTC)

Using Photos for School

I want to use some photos for a History project...how do I legally use them and source them to? — Preceding unsigned comment was added by 162.249.43.186 (talk) 19:35, 23 October 2018‎ (UTC)

Hey anon. So long as everything is done right on our end, photos on Wikimedia Commons should be free to use for anyone for any purpose. Usually the most that is required is to attribute them, which usually means a little text in the corner that says where you got the image from. But if you are just using them for a history project for school, I don't think you should have anything to worry about. GMGtalk 20:29, 23 October 2018 (UTC)
If that project is online, then it becomes a bit more important to be careful. It's usually best to state under what license you are using the image. Also, if your school has requirements about footnoting in a particular manner, that's for you and them to sort out.
In any case, if you go to the file page for any given image, it will have information about authorship and sometimes something more specific about attribution. A few random examples of attribution:
I hope those give you a fair sense of this. If you have a question about attributing some specific image, please ask that specific question. - Jmabel ! talk 23:48, 23 October 2018 (UTC)

I wish to upload some documents in commons but I want to make sure they are not used to defame my family

Hi, my name's Carlos Barros, recently I found out some old documents from my grandparents in perfect conditions, that would illustrate perfectly well how Portuguese documents were. In this case it is Social Security documents from my grandpa and grandma from 1983 and 1964, my grandparents died both in early 2006 and these kind of documents, me and my mother we mourned them and we feel that these documents are important to document the human history, there wouldn't be a problem with the Portuguese state either, since these kind of documents are not anymore in circulation. As for the family their only living relatives are me and my mother and we are fine to upload these kind of documents. However we wanted to donate these scans on the condition they are not used to spoil my grandparents good name. Is that possible?

Kind regards,

Carlos Barros

Ps: I'm not sending the documents, because Wikimedia request me to upload them under a license. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Silveringking (talk • contribs) 23:52, 24 October 2018 (UTC)

  • You can put Personality rights on the file page to emphasize your concern, but once you've digitized the documents you can't really control how someone uses them. Presumably, defamation would be illegal, and you could go after someone legally if they did that, but there is no way to achieve prior restraint. - Jmabel ! talk 15:54, 25 October 2018 (UTC)
  • As for the license: if these documents contain only simple, formulaic, text and no significant other design or images, you can use PD-Text, because they would be ineligible for copyright. If there are parts you really do not want to publish, you can blacken them. I have attached two example images of Portuguese identity documents. --rimshottalk 22:11, 25 October 2018 (UTC)

Input error using Microsoft Edge

I seem to have a reoccurring issue where sometimes if I type in a field in the MediaWiki Upload Wizard the text doesn't appear in the selected field but at the upper left corner of the page, I often have this issue in Wikidata but only recently started experiencing it with Wikimedia Commons. Does anyone else who uses MicrosoftEdge to upload files to Wikimedia Commons experience this? If this is unique to mydevice I won't create a Phabricator ticket for this issue. --Donald Trung 『徵國單』 (No Fake News 💬) (WikiProject Numismatics 💴) (Articles 📚) 09:53, 31 October 2018 (UTC)

What is commons all about? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Wisdom brown (talk • contribs) 20:39, 27 October 2018‎ (UTC)

Hi Wisdom brown, you might want to read Commons:Project scope. It explains the aim and overall scope of Commons. De728631 (talk) 20:59, 27 October 2018 (UTC)

UK National Archives

I have taken a picture of a document I found in the UK National Archives and paid them £48 for a licence to display it (low res only) on the internet.

I was just wondering how to attribute it when I upload it. The conditions of the licence are:

"The reproduction of images of documents from The National Archives on an open website in perpetuity constitutes worldwide publication, and costs a one-off fee of £40.00 + £8.00 VAT. This fee covers the upload of between one and twenty TNA document images. The images must be protected from unauthorized download at high resolution by a third party. You can do this by watermarking, or by keeping the resolution to a level whereby the document is legible for information and research, but is not of sufficient quality for commercial publication."

  • @R-F-Baker: Signing your posts on talk pages is required and it is a Commons guideline to sign your posts on deletion requests, undeletion requests, and noticeboards. To do so, simply add four tildes (~~~~) at the end of your comments. Your user name or IP address (if you are not logged in) and a timestamp will then automatically be added when you save your comment. Signing your comments helps people to find out who said something and provides them with a link to your user/talk page (for further discussion). Thank you.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 11:31, 27 October 2018 (UTC)
You should ask the people you paid.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 11:30, 27 October 2018 (UTC)
This looks very much like it is incompatible with Commons. Availability for commercial publication is one of the core principle of Commons as is free access to high-res images without any means of authorization. De728631 (talk) 21:03, 27 October 2018 (UTC)

Windsor, Ontario Flag

To improve the Flag_of_Windsor,_Ontario Wikipedia article, I corresponded with The Governor General Of Canada Heraldry office/department to find these images. He answered some other questions and pointed to them and among other things stated, "The emblems are not copyright-free. Copyright rests with the Crown; however, each recipient of a heraldic emblem is then given blanket permission to use or regulate the emblem as they see fit." In this case the City of Windsor ignored the proposed new flag version (as covered in the article). I don't expect this will negate the copyright. So my question is, how may I properly transfer these images to Wikipedia off Wikimedia Commons?

Thanks in advance. ~ JasonCarswell (talk) 08:33, 28 October 2018 (UTC)

@JasonCarswell: I think your best bet would be to just re-upload them to Wikipedia as fair-use content. Follow the en:w:Wikipedia:File Upload Wizard for non-free files to save a "local" en-wiki copy. --HyperGaruda (talk) 08:47, 28 October 2018 (UTC)

Where can I find the issue tracker for HotCat.js?

I want to make a feature request, but I can't figure out the best place to do it. -Furicorn (talk) 22:24, 28 October 2018 (UTC)

@Furicorn: the usual place is the associated discussion page, in this case MediaWiki talk:Gadget-HotCat.js—of which the archive pages indeed include feature requests. Note that Help talk:Gadget-HotCat also redirects there.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 23:54, 28 October 2018 (UTC)

Derivative work of a free image

I made some changes to a photograph that is already on commons, and I'm trying to upload it. The source image is File:Launay, Clément CIPB1900.jpg and the changes are cropping, unblurring and scratch removal. How should I upload the resulting image? I guess it should be "someone else's work, but what should I put in the "author(s)" field? – Pretended leer (talk) 22:30, 28 October 2018 (UTC) Would Studio Damrémont be what I'd have to put in that field? It is written on the border of the source image and it appears as a category on it too. – Pretended leer (talk) 22:38, 28 October 2018 (UTC)

If the cropping is minor, I'd upload as a new version of the existing file. Otherwise, upload it as your own and use Derived from with a link to the original image. That would satisfy the CC licence. Rodhullandemu (talk) 22:42, 28 October 2018 (UTC)
Thanks! – Pretended leer (talk) 22:46, 28 October 2018 (UTC)
In this case, I'd recommend considering it a separate, derivative work no matter how minor the cropping is. We want to have ready access to the intact historical image. - Jmabel ! talk 01:37, 29 October 2018 (UTC)

Should this be deleted?

It was created for use in an English Wikipedia article which was deleted a while ago. [5] Enigmaman (talk) 16:34, 29 October 2018 (UTC)

Is this the right Creative Commons licence

I have found some videos on YouTube that would be useful in an article. <https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QcKk7-oK_PU>. It is marked "Creative Commons Attribution license (reuse allowed)". When I click on the words in quotes, it takes me to <https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/2797468#>.

That page tells me "Creative Commons licenses provide a standard way for content creators to grant someone else permission to use their work. YouTube allows users to mark their videos with a Creative Commons CC BY license." The CC BY is a link. That link <https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/legalcode> takes me to a page that describes the "Attribution 3.0 Unported".

By this process, I gather that the video is released under CC BY-SA 3.0.

Am I reading this right? Jacqke (talk) 04:03, 30 October 2018 (UTC)

Hi,

Im planning to pen an article (in Wikipedia) for which I may have to use photographs published in one of the referred books. Is it enough if I obtain a written permission from the author or the Publishers and upload the scan of this permission on to the media commons? If not, what more do I have to do about using the pictures from the book?

Could this rare 1950s animated series well known for its poor quality possibly be in the public domain? If all film reels for it were only recently recovered (late 2016) I have doubts its copyright was ever renewed... PseudoSkull (talk) 18:46, 30 October 2018 (UTC)

@PseudoSkull: the episodes dated 1954 were due for renewal in 1981 and 1982, so if they were renewed, they would be in Library of Congress's online copyright database. However, searches for "Adventures of Paddy the Pelican" or simply "Paddy the Pelican" bring up no results. clpo13(talk) 19:44, 30 October 2018 (UTC)

My question is regarding the figure I uploaded I took it from Someone's Dissertation I was advised I needed permeation so I located the author on social media "Linked in to be specific" the owner responded on Linked in giving me permeation to us the figure how do I upload the proof of permeation?

and is screen grab or an email enough to be proof of permeation? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Zgumede13 (talk • contribs) 02:15, 31 October 2018 (UTC)

@Zgumede13: to ask a question on a noticeboard or discussion page, please start a new topic at the bottom of the page, rather than posting in an existing section, and remember to sign your posts by typing four tildes at the end.
As to your question, the copyright owner should send permission to OTRS: please see COM:OTRS for instructions and a sample letter of permission. Bear in mind that the figure must be licensed for anyone to use for any purpose in order to be hosted here; permission only for use on Wikipedia is not sufficient.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 03:42, 31 October 2018 (UTC)
