ReDirect is visible as a WORD in the article text. see my exmaple page

my problem is that the word "ReDirect" is visible as a WORD in the article text. How can I remove this word but keep the redirect - function? • Not sure what you are referring to, but if your question is about the Dutch Wikipedia, you would do better to ask there. Although both Commons and the Dutch Wikipedia are both projects of the Wikimedia Foundation, they are almost completely separate projects. - Jmabel ! talk 15:54, 3 July 2018 (UTC)

Conflict between DEFAULTSORT and Wikidata

I am seeing the following warning at Category:Tomos Prys

  • Warning: Default sort key "Prys, Price, Tomos, Thomas" overrides earlier default sort key "Prys, Tomos".

'Tomos Prys' and 'Thomas Price' are alternative spellings of this man's name, and he might also be known as 'Thomas Prys' or 'Tomos Price'. Moving {{DEFAULTSORT}} after {{Wikidata Infobox}} does not resolve the warning. Is this a problem with d:Q7820312? If I delete the DEFAULTSORT then the sort order will presumably be wrong. Verbcatcher (talk) 18:18, 4 July 2018 (UTC)

@Verbcatcher: You can add {{wikidata infobox|defaultsort=no}} to tell {{Wikidata infobox}} not to provide its own DEFAULTSORT for cases (like this one) where it gets it wrong. I don't think there's anything wrong with Tomos Prys (Q7820312). Maybe the problem could be worked around with ranks, but I'm far from certain that's the correct approach. --bjh21 (talk) 18:30, 4 July 2018 (UTC)

If several images are scanned from the same book, should they have a special category?

I'm scanning and uploading pictures from some old books. Should I make a special category for each book, which its pictures can belong to (along with their other particular categories)? Or perhaps a gallery in main space?

I'm sure this is a fairly basic question, but I've read through a lot of help pages and I can't find the answer. Marnanel (talk) 18:36, 4 July 2018 (UTC)

Extremely large images

In the past I uploaded a diagram and its associated parts (see here). The image was large but it did not cause any issues with uploading to the commons. However, I have recently completed a recreation of that linked image (and its associated parts) at a much larger, and more detailed scale. One "cage" of 9 cages total (just as in the linked image) is 5172x3786. With 9 frames in a row, the image balloons into 46548x3786; several gigs in size. Additionally, I wanted to upload some of the parts I created that I used in the diagram such as a highly detailed Milky Way Galaxy, Andromeda Galaxy, and Triangulum Galaxy. These are PNGs so other editors can use them for their own creations. The three galaxy files are 11000x11000 each. If I decide to publish these works on the Commons, how do I go about working with extremely large files such as these, considering that they are all going to be over 100MB? Assistance and suggestions are much appreciated. Andrew. Z. Colvin • Talk 21:59, 29 June 2018 (UTC)

@Azcolvin429: Hi,
The limit is now 4 GB, so it should be sufficient for everybody. ;oP
For such huge files, I suggest to use Chunked upload. Great work! Yann (talk) 22:49, 29 June 2018 (UTC)
I did not realize the limit was 4 GB. Thanks for the info! Hopefully none of the images will be over 4 GB. Andrew. Z. Colvin • Talk 06:08, 2 July 2018 (UTC)

Lines under/next to images

Hi, after uploading some images to wikicommons and afterwards using them in wikisource I'm getting lines under the images and sometimes next to them, even though these lines aren't in the original uploaded image. For example see here s:Page:The Swedenborg Library Vol 1.djvu/23. You can see the lines around the W large initial. If you enlarge the image to more px the lines then dissapear, and the lines aren't visible around the image when viewed here. I'd appreciate any help. Jpez (talk) 11:42, 1 July 2018 (UTC)

@Jpez: I cropped File:W as an initial from the Swedenborg library.jpg for you, now the lines are gone.   — Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me 11:59, 1 July 2018 (UTC)
Thanks Jeff. But I'd like to know where these lines are coming from as they're around most of the images I've uploaded recently and not in the original images I've uploaded. See c:Category:Images in the Swedenborg Library series for some more. I guess I can try cropping and reuploading if there is no other solution. Jpez (talk) 13:57, 1 July 2018 (UTC)
@Jpez: It appears they are coming from some portion of your processes for preparing and uploading. You could also crop more closely.   — Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me 14:26, 1 July 2018 (UTC)
For an example of what I'm talking about, the top image is at full resoulution and the bottom image is at 150px. Why are there lines around the bottom one and not around the top one. It's the same image just in different sizes. Jpez (talk) 05:59, 2 July 2018 (UTC)

I'm so very sorry for not putting the copyright. The copyright owner is Regal Films here in the Philippines. The movie is very old already. It was shown way back 1989. It will be 29 years old soon. The movie was a flop and no one remembers it anymore. --Zapbag (talk) 11:59, 2 July 2018 (UTC)

the source is from CineMaterial and they don't own the copyright either. --Zapbag (talk) 12:04, 2 July 2018 (UTC)

By the way not all copyright here in the Philippines is as strict as in the U.S. Nobody paid much attention to the movie. --Zapbag (talk) 12:18, 2 July 2018 (UTC)

Zapbag: 29 years is not "very old" in the context of copyright. Please read Commons:Copyright rules by territory#The Philippines. As explained there, this type of work is protected for at least 50 years after publication (so at least until the end of 2039), and possibly up to 50 years after the death of the author(s). As for "nobody paying attention", please see Commons:Project scope/Precautionary principle. Copyright on public museum image

Hello!

For one of my articles, I am thinking of using a picture of baron Apor József, officer in the Hungarian army during the 1848-1849 uprising. The image is currently publicly accessible on the Székely National Museum's site (http://www.sznm.ro/muvesz.php?id=492). Sadly, there is no information regarding their copyright policies on the site. Can we infer its status in the public domain from the facts that: 1. it is freely accessible, 2. was made in the 19th century and the author must already be dead for quite some time now (at least 70 years), and 3. the museum is a public institution, which, if anything, would only benefit from an added link to its site?

Asking Site to Delete My Images

The site I posted my images on is denying my request to remove them. I would like my account deleted in its entirety as I no longer want any images of identifiable people up. Is it this site, and if so, what is the name of your account? LX (talk, contribs) 18:06, 2 July 2018 (UTC)
Just to be clear:
  1. If this is about Commons, there is no way to actually delete an account (although do see meta:Right_to_vanish, if you really mean to go away and not come back).
  2. Abandoning your account will not delete any photos. If you've uploaded non-encyclopedic personal photos of identifiable people, and they are not in use, there is a fair chance of getting them deleted, but only by discussing the matter, not by removing an account. - Jmabel ! talk 00:16, 3 July 2018 (UTC)

License question

Would it be possible to upload original images to Commons that I've created, using a license that allows re-use with attribution but does not allow modification of any kind? nagualdesign 22:55, 4 July 2018 (UTC)

@Nagualdesign: No. Permission to create derivative works is required by Commons:Licensing. --bjh21 (talk) 23:06, 4 July 2018 (UTC)
Thanks for the reply. So if I have a great quality photo that I'm willing to upload, which would make an invaluable contribution to Wikipedia and other projects, but I don't want to risk other editors coming along and making it look worse.. tough shit? nagualdesign 23:15, 4 July 2018 (UTC)
@Nagualdesign: That's about the size of it. It's the same for writing: you may have an article that you're willing to upload and that would make an invaluable contribution to Wikipedia, but if you're not willing to allow other people to edit it, it's not welcome there. Actually, you have slightly more control on Commons: the policy on overwriting files means that you can request that modified versions be uploaded under a new filename so as to give projects a choice between using your original version or the modified one. But you must allow the creation of modified versions. --bjh21 (talk) 10:40, 5 July 2018 (UTC)

@Jeff G.: The filesize (134MB) exceedes the limit 100MB for the old upload page.. 😂 GerifalteDelSabana (talk) 10:33, 3 July 2018 (UTC)

  • Signing your posts on talk pages is required and it is a Commons guideline to sign your posts on deletion requests, undeletion requests, and noticeboards. To do so, simply add four tildes (~~~~) at the end of your comments. Your user name or IP address (if you are not logged in) and a timestamp will then automatically be added when you save your comment. Signing your comments helps people to find out who said something and provides them with a link to your user/talk page (for further discussion). Thank you.   — Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me 10:17, 3 July 2018 (UTC)

Photos from the collection of the subject of a Wikipedia entry

I am trying hard to control my anger. I worked hard to upload photos from the collection of Wang Liyuan, a well-known Chinese actress, and my mother-in-law, in order to create a Chinese-language Wikipedia entry at her request. Instead, I find that the photos have been deleted without my knowledge or permission.

By what right did someone delete these photos, and are we going to go through this same crap if I upload them again?

Again, I am doing this for my mother-in-law, Wang Liyuan, the actress in question and subject of the entry.

I await your reply.

IT Guy — Preceding unsigned comment added by IT Guy (talk • contribs) 03:50, 4 July 2018 (UTC)

Without an explicit transfer, the copyright of a photo belongs to the photographer rather than the subject. Since you have claimed the photos are your own work and yet you also claim those were from your mother-in-law, it is very difficult to just take your words for the authorship of those images.
By the Commons:Licensing policy, your consent is not needed.
I would advise you to refrain from reuploading until the actual copyright holder, i.e. the photographer(s) of the photos, has licensed those image. Insisting on uploading copyrighted image without proper license will result you being blocked. -Mys_721tx (talk) 04:21, 4 July 2018 (UTC)

@Watercolore: There's no fixed quality standard. Rather, the standard (defined by Commons:Project scope) is "realistically useful for an educational purpose". That's interpreted in the context of the files we already have on Commons, so for subjects where we have a lot of good pictures, a poor one will be unwelcome, whereas for previously-unrepresented subjects even a bad picture is better than nothing. --bjh21 (talk) 10:21, 4 July 2018 (UTC)

I don't know whether this can appear on Commons. Belloc died 65 years ago, so not more than 70, and "Belinda" was published in 1928, so he can't have signed it before 1923. But perhaps signatures don't follow quite the same rules? Marnanel (talk) 18:47, 9 July 2018 (UTC)

@Marnanel: in many countries, typical signatures are considered too simple for copyright. Commons:When to use the PD-signature tag has some country-specific guidance as well as advice on how to apply the {{PD-signature}} tag. clpo13(talk) 19:08, 9 July 2018 (UTC)

Syntax highlighter?

VisualEditor toolbar with the Vector skin, but it should be the same location for MonoBook

Does Commons have a gadget for an edit window syntax highlighter like on Wikipedia? Firefox and Chrome. It's visually difficult to navigate through threads, and to post in them, without the syntax highlighter. Maile66 (talk) 19:32, 10 July 2018 (UTC)

@Maile66: it looks like Commons does have that feature, though it's disabled by default. If you're using the "old" wikitext editor (the default), then there's a symbol that looks like a highlighter in the toolbar above the edit window, towards the left side. Click that to enable syntax highlighting. If you've enabled the new wikitext editor in the beta features menu, the option for syntax highlighting is in the hamburger menu on the right side of the screen, next to the button that switches between visual and source mode. clpo13(talk) 21:12, 10 July 2018 (UTC)
Also, this is different than the syntax highlighter gadget that's on enwiki. The new syntax highlighting is built right into the wikitext editor. clpo13(talk) 21:17, 10 July 2018 (UTC)
clpo13 thanks. I clicked on the highlighter in the edit window. Sort of a stripped down version, in that it doesn't do the yellow, blue and white differences on the text. But it at least highlights the linking. That helps break up the visual a bit. I'm not in Beta, but thanks for the advice. Maile66 (talk) 21:55, 10 July 2018 (UTC)
You're welcome, Maile66! Even though the gadget I linked above isn't installed here on Commons like it is on enwiki, you can use it by adding mw.loader.load('//www.mediawiki.org/w/index.php?title=MediaWiki:Gadget-DotsSyntaxHighlighter.js&action=raw&ctype=text/javascript'); to Special:MyPage/common.js. Hope that helps. clpo13(talk) 22:04, 10 July 2018 (UTC)
clpo13 I installed the .js you linked above. One positive thing it did was make the font a lot easier to look at in the edit window. In fact, it almost mirrors the finished product after a save. What I was getting before looked like it was, well, flat-looking, like from an old typewriter on a piece of paper. Much better now on that. However ... I enabled the new wikitext editor. And nothing else happened. I do not have a hamburger menu on the right or left hand side of my screen. There is nothing for me to click on. Could it be a skin issue? I'm in MonoBook. Maile66 (talk) 22:30, 10 July 2018 (UTC)
The edit toolbar for the new editor is almost at the very top of the screen, above the page title. It could be that the new editor is optimized for Vector since it's the default, but I think it should work with MonoBook. Did you enable both "Visual editing" and "New wikitext mode" in the beta options? The 2017 wikitext editor is a mode within VisualEditor, but I don't know if they both need to be enabled to get it working. It might also be a bug, so if you can't get it working, leave a note at mw:2017 wikitext editor/Feedback. clpo13(talk) 22:49, 10 July 2018 (UTC)
Well, it all works now. And I'm in MonoBook. So, I guess it was a delayed whatever. Thanks for your help. Maile66 (talk) 23:07, 10 July 2018 (UTC)

Trouble with colours on vector files

I just uploaded two files, found here and here. I copied them both directly from their respective websites where vector logos are available. However, when I uploaded them, the colours seemed to mysteriously become black. When you actually click on the file, however, my browser displays the colour correctly, but the PNG previews are all completely black. The files are useless for Wikipedia since they have completely the wrong colours. Can anybody help out here? QYYZ (talk) 15:40, 4 July 2018 (UTC)

Updated logo + logo misrepresentation

  • Hi, over at en.wiki I've been switching Overwatch League team logos to their correct SVG versions. When doing this I came across: File:New York Excelsior Logo.png. I've currently uploaded the SVG version on en.wiki as I wasn't sure of the guidelines on commons, so I'm not sure if you want to update it/delete the old version?
  • Also, I understand it's not deemed fair use as a non-free logo due to the nature of the logo i.e. simple geometric shapes. But I just wanted to make sure if you decide to keep the old version that there isn't any issues keeping it in terms of misrepresentation etc. As the File on commons you claim is the Logo is technically the Logo + Woodmark, and the the actual Logo in it is missing colour + the official Woodmark has slight variations of the letters 'X' and 'L' of Excelsior. For reference: Logo, Woodmark Wiki nV (talk) 19:06, 5 July 2018 (UTC)
  • I believe the SVG images are considered of nominal resolution and are allowed due to the exception: "the only non-free SVGs that we allow are logos that have been taken from publicly-available, official media/releases of the company/entity that own that SVG". But anyhow, Logo replaced File:New York Excelsior Logo.png on en.wiki, so just figured I'll let you know in case you want to update/delete your version. Wiki nV (talk) 10:45, 6 July 2018 (UTC)

Seeing what gender a user is

I thought gender information was private, but I just found one of my alerts said "User X mentioned you on her talk page".

Just read the fine print and it turns out to be meant to be public. So now I wonder what other ways there may be to find out the gender of a user, if they entered it? - Alexis Jazz ping plz 07:31, 6 July 2018 (UTC)

Thanks! (also for signing my edit.. I rarely forget) - Alexis Jazz ping plz 07:45, 6 July 2018 (UTC)
@Alexis Jazz: That's only possible if the user already revealed their gender in Special:Preferences, otherwise the MediaWiki default is singular they/their/them. You can also determine user's specified gender using parser function {{GENDER:Username|this user is a male|this user is a female|no gender specified}}; it will output the relevant result even in preview mode. Ammarpad (talk) 09:35, 6 July 2018 (UTC)
@Alexis Jazz: You can also query the API more compactly with this, but the result is not very user-friendly.   — Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me 12:12, 6 July 2018 (UTC)
This has been used for research many times. However from memory I think around 17% of accounts actively set a gender, depending on project, and there is no way of knowing the reasons they set a gender (which may be unrelated to their real life identity). It is also hard to interpret what a neutral gender is intended to mean, or whether the user has a preferred pronoun in addition to that setting.
Oh, and naturally, this is English language-centric. In some languages there is no official way to address someone in a gender-neutral way, so these settings simply do not work well in those alternate language projects/pages. -- (talk) 12:27, 6 July 2018 (UTC)

Question

Just a question: If a deleted image has annotations, but it is later undeleted, will the annotations be restored in the undeleted image? Just wondering.--PlanespotterA320 (talk) 14:55, 6 July 2018 (UTC)

@PlanespotterA320: Moved this here from Commons:Undeletion requests, as this is a better place to ask. Guanaco (talk) 15:24, 6 July 2018 (UTC)
@PlanespotterA320: The answer is yes. Annotations are saved in the main wikitext of the file description and will be undeleted along with the other content. The templates {{ImageNote}} and {{ImageNoteEnd}} are used. Guanaco (talk) 15:27, 6 July 2018 (UTC)

Should the administrative division be classified as "political"?

As per 玄史生's edit summary, he advocates that an administrative division is "political" rather than "geographical". Do you think that the administrative division should be classified as "Category:Politics" or "Category:Geography"?--Kai3952 (talk) 15:59, 6 July 2018 (UTC)

question of "publishing" as it relates to sculpture

Over the last year or so, I have uploaded a number (dozens) of photographs taken by me of cemetery sculptures, in various European countries. Most of these were created and placed on their graves/tombs in the XIXth century, clearly putting them in the Public Domain. As a conscientious Wiki contributor, I have always attached the best license available to the images, both for my own photographs (I allow copying/use of my photos with appropriate attribution/credits) and for the original artworks. Recently, a notice of sorts has been posted within some licenses (e.g., {{PD-old}} on my contribution: File:Johnson_burt_fine_arts_lobby_0.jpg) This notice was not there when the image was first uploaded with the PD-old license. The part that concerns me is "You must also include a United States public domain tag to indicate why this work is in the public domain in the United States." The reason this concerns me is that, whenever I read about criteria for Public Domain - for example, the section "3D art (sculptures etc.)" at Commons:Copyright_rules_by_subject_matter#Art_(copies_of) reference is made to the "publication" of the art work. Unfortunately (for me, and others?) I cannot find an explanation anywhere about what "publication" means in reference to sculptures. In general, I need help deciding what license to attach to the various sculptural photographs I have uploaded (and will in future upload).

Delete a redirect-after-move?

I thought the previous name of this file was inappropriate (and used inappropriately on Wikipedia by the uploader), so I requested renaming. Since the link on Wikipedia has been updated, I see no use for the redirect-after-move, so can the redirect be deleted (for the same reason the file was renamed)? --Pipetricker (talk) 12:36, 8 July 2018 (UTC)

No, I don't think it can, because we don't know if this file is in use on an external website under its original filename, so deleting the redirect will break that link. Rodhullandemu (talk) 12:40, 8 July 2018 (UTC)

Hi! I would like to include the logo of IECO (Institute for Ethics in Communication and Organizations) in the page I'm editing in wikipedia called IECO. Mostalla1: If the logotype does not meet the threshold of originality required for copyright protection, you can upload it and select the option "Another reason not mentioned above" during the upload process and enter {{PD-textlogo}} in the wikitext input field that appears. If you are unsure if the logotype meets the threshold of originality, assume that it does.
If the logotype does meet the threshold of originality, it needs to be published under a free license in order to be hosted on Commons. This means that the organisation will no longer be able to stop others from using the logotype for commercial purposes on copyright grounds, but restrictions on use imposed by trademark rights still apply. If the organisation is willing to give up these rights, please follow these instructions to obtain and submit an appropriate licensing permission.
Some Wikipedia projects allow non-free logos to be locally uploaded under fair use provisions, which is not an option here on Wikimedia Commons. However, I see that you have been active on Spanish Wikipedia, so I presume your question is in relation to that particular project, and Spanish Wikipedia is not listed as having an appropriate policy to allow that sort of thing. 1928 image

So, I'm looking at this image, from 1928 that I would very much like to add to Category:Aurelia Henry Reinhardt. Doesn't list author and doesn't seem to exist anywhere else online other than in this archive. But the image doesn't really have a proper name, just a name assigned to it by the archive. So how exactly does one tell if it was published with a copyright notice or if the notice was renewed? Presumably the blanket statement from the archive doesn't achieve this, since they have some things that are obviously in the public domain, and we can take their requirement for written permission and tell them where to go with it. So what to do? GMGtalk 17:17, 3 July 2018 (UTC)

@GreenMeansGo: since there's so little information about the photo online, the best option would be to contact the archive or Bancroft Library at UC Berkeley (who contributed the photo) and ask if they have any further information on it, such as who the author was or when it was published. It could even be that it was a personal photo acquired as part of a donation, and it wasn't actually published until the archive put it online. clpo13(talk) 16:07, 12 July 2018 (UTC)

Transparency layer does not show on Commons previews and thumbnails

File:Firefox 61 on Windows 10.png has a transparency layer. However, this does not show up on previews on Commons nor on the thumbnail for the image as featured on the Firefox wikipedia article. A predecessor image I had uploaded, File:Firefox Quantum (57.0) on Windows 10.png, shows the transparency layer fine. I used GIMP 2.8 for the Firefox 57 image, and GIMP 2.10 for the Firefox 61 image, but didn't do anything different technically in creating them. Another notable change between the 57 and 61 images is the new version of Commons' Upload Wizard which was rolled out in the time between. File:NASA's Eyes.png, which was also created in GIMP 2.10 and uploaded with the new Upload Wizard, fails to show the transparency layer in previews, and in the thumbnail for the NASA's Eyes Wikipedia article. Registration plate blur

Hi, An uploader has uploaded File:DSC00995 (41456542630).jpg however the images of the vehicle at Category:A-Team Van all have fake plates on obviously to protect their privacy,

So should the image above have the reg plate blurred and then should the unblurred version be revdelled after?,

As the vehicle is very unique and probably the only vehicle like this in existence I feel purely out of respect for their privacy we should but wanted to ask here before I made the changes incase there were objections, Thanks, –Davey2010Talk 22:05, 14 July 2018 (UTC)

Hi Jmabel, In the UK you can enter any reg on a uk site and then you can pay for a record of for instance the owners name and address as well as other things - Does no such thing exist in the US?, Thanks, –Davey2010Talk 13:17, 15 July 2018 (UTC)
There are paid services to do this in the U.S. But in the U.S., almost nothing in a public space has any reasonable expectation of privacy with reference to being photographed and published. Doing something publicly constitutes implicit consent. - Jmabel ! talk 17:53, 15 July 2018 (UTC)
Fair point, I mean thinking about it now it could've easily been photographed whilst on the road too, Not really sure why they didn't opt with towing it via trailer but there we are, Okie dokie I'll add it to that category, Many thanks, –Davey2010Talk 18:17, 15 July 2018 (UTC)

Quick question about tags

There is an image that I want to download and use in my project but I saw this.

"You must also include a United States public domain tag to indicate why this work is in the public domain in the United States."

Is this only meant for uploading or do I have to add the Tag in my project?

Thanks Kent — Preceding unsigned comment was added by 45.24.11.110 (talk) 15:11, 15 July 2018 (UTC)

  • When you say "in my project" do you mean something totally outside the realm of the Wikimedia Foundation? If so, on one level I want to say, we can't offer you legal advice, so the following is not legal advice. And you don't indicate a particular image, so it's hard to know the facts of the matter. But of course if something is PD in the U.S. there is no legal requirement to indicate why, that's just Commons' policy for our own site. On your own site, you are on your own, but in a collective site we need to know someone's rationale. And if you are publishing outside the U.S., then U.S. status does not matter at all. - Jmabel ! talk 17:58, 15 July 2018 (UTC)

Upload filter

Over the past few days I have made multiple attempts to upload a higher resolution and better cropped version of File:Infanteriegewehr m-1871-84 Mauser - Tyskland - kaliber 10,95mm - Armémuseum.jpg from the same source as the original one, an image I originally uploaded in 2011, but every time I try the upload is prevented by a filter that claims it's the same image as the existing one, which it isn't. And on top of that the system here has replaced the original image with a version that is of even lower quality than the original one, instead of the higher quality image I've been trying to upload. Upload problems that are totally unacceptable, and will result in me no longer uploading anything here... Thomas.W talk 13:53, 15 July 2018 (UTC)

You successfully uploaded a higher resolution version on 12 July. All subsequent attempts failed because you tried to re-upload the same image. Ruslik (talk) 20:22, 15 July 2018 (UTC)
@Ruslik0: No, I did not successfully upload a new image on 12 July, the image that is there now is not the image I tried to upload (which is a true 1200x450px image without the greyscale cards with inventory number), but a crudely rescaled version of the previous 550x240px image (which in 2011 was the highest resolution available at the Armémuseum "Digital museum" web site). So instead of accepting my higher quality upload the upload filter told me that I tried to upload the same image, and then just rescaled the existing image. It wasn't me who did that, I don't even have that crudely rescaled image on my HDD. The reason I wanted to update the existing image with a higher resultion and better cropped image is a) to avoid having to add all the licensing data again, and b) to avoid having to go to whatever page on whatever language version of WP that uses the image and replace the image link. Thomas.W talk 10:32, 16 July 2018 (UTC)
@Thomas.W: I suspect your browser is caching the old image, since I see a 1200-px version without the grey card. In Chromium and Firefox, I'd usually force the browser to reload the page by visiting it and clicking the "reload" icon while holding down the "shift" key. Can you try that (or the equivalent in your browser) and see if it helps? --bjh21 (talk) 11:42, 16 July 2018 (UTC)
@Bjh21: Thanks, that solved the problem. I didn't know that browsers could keep cached images even after a reboot (I shut off the computer each evening). Thomas.W talk 12:09, 16 July 2018 (UTC)
For what it's worth, the best way to confirm whether something is a browser caching issue is usually to try the URL in another browser. - Jmabel ! talk 15:34, 16 July 2018 (UTC)

Can an image history be merged?

I was going through a class's work in-depth and I saw that students uploaded two of the same image, both of which are in JPG format. The correct format is at File:Jade Pendant.jpg, however the image at File:Yale - Jade.jpg has a better size image. I figured I'd bring it up here since I wasn't sure which to make the target page to be merged to. Shalor (Wiki Ed) (talk) 19:57, 16 July 2018 (UTC)

It's possible to merge file histories; see Commons:History merging and splitting for details. In the case of a duplicate like this, it's usually not necessary. You can just tag one of them with {{duplicate|File:example.jpg}}, replacing example.jpg with the name of the smaller version. An admin will then copy over any useful description info, delete the smaller copy, and create a redirect in its place. I've processed this one already. Guanaco (talk) 20:45, 16 July 2018 (UTC)

First you need to determine whether the images from the Ministry of Defense account are free for public use. Some of them are marked with "all rights reserved" tags. Others are marked as public domain, but with no indication of why they are in the public domain. Without more information or a different license, these would not be suitable for commons. Bilder im Bild aus eigenem Museum

Was muss ich wo eintragen?

Deletion Help

I had made a deletion request page for multiple images earlier, but I had put them in the wrong deletion request category. These images had obvious U.S copyright violations because they were created before 1978 and published recently in the web in the USC archives under copyright from the Basel mission. I think what I had meant to do with these images was qualify them for speedy deletion, but had followed the instructions for the other method in nominating multiple images, and had ended up with this page. How can I get these images under speedy deletion? BreadBuddy (talk) 16:31, 19 July 2018 (UTC)

I believe I have the only existing image on a Postcard I have of a British actor: Philip D. Williams, who appeared in the 1920 silent film "Sybil"

Dear Sirs, I believe I have the only existing image on a Postcard I have of a British actor: Philip D. Williams, who appeared in the 1920 silent film "Sybil".

I was encouraged to join / assist Wikipedia / free dictionary, as I would like to preserve for posterity and put a face to a name of Philip D. Williams.

The 1920 silent film is stated as "a lost film"... either destroyed intentionally (for space), or unintentionally in a fire etc.

I am a new user to Wiki, and would like to upload a copy of my postcard - as it has this British actor in character of appearing at the Theatre Royal, Leeds.

I believe that everyone would like to see what people look like, where ever possible.

The postcard is dated 1939, and I would like to add his image to Wikipedia … to aid everyone's knowledge, and to enable his image to be restored for posterity.

Please e.mail me, I have just joined as a new user.

I welcome your support, and help with this.

Thank you

  • I don't see, from the foregoing, any reason to think the image would be in the public domain, so I suspect we can't accept it here. It's probably "orphaned", but Commons doesn't make any allowance for that. If you just want to make sure it's preserved, I'd suggest doing a good scan and putting it somewhere like Flickr, which is less strict about enforcing copyright issues. Also, IMDB might be happy to have it. - Jmabel ! talk 02:46, 20 July 2018 (UTC)

Uploading Own Photos

Hello and good afternoon/night/morning. I've been trying to upload a photo I've taken recently so I could add it to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guira_cuckoo, but after some tries it either says "We could not determine whether this file is suitable for Wikimedia Commons." or that "An automated filter has identified this edit as potentially unconstructive". I think this could potentially be because it has been already uploaded to https://i.stack.imgur.com/N1z8Y.jpg when I posted this (https://biology.stackexchange.com/questions/70228/can-someone-identify-this-brazilian-bird/70230#70230) question on biology.se so I could identify the birds. Is it true that the photo would be unconstructive to the article (I personally don't think so, but another person's judgement would be better than a bot's)? If not, how can I solve this problem? — Preceding unsigned comment added by AlephGuira (talk • contribs) 02:38, 27 July 2018 (UTC)

  • I don't offhand see an attempted upload in the logs, so this is odd.
  • Were you trying to upload directly here on Commons, or trying a cross-wiki upload from en-wiki? If the latter, try uploading directly here on Commons.
  • A bot wouldn't be enforcing this but... given that you uploaded to a different site under a different name, you either need to go back there and make it clear what license you are releasing under (or that this Wikimedia account is yours), or you need to go through the process described at COM:OTRS so we can know you are the same person. - Jmabel ! talk 03:01, 27 July 2018 (UTC)
  • Thanks for the advice. I was uploading directly from the wikipedia page. I'll try uploading from here now. Also, I'm going to edit that post to make it clear it is linked to this Wikimedia account somehow. Thanks again. — Preceding unsigned comment added by AlephGuira (talk • contribs) 03:28, 27 July 2018 (UTC)
  • It worked! - AlephGuira
AlephGuira: Good to hear! In case you were wondering what happened, I can see from the logs that you encountered a filter that prevents uploads of PNG images from newly registered users using the particular upload form that you used. The reason for this is that those overwhelmingly turn out to be copyright violations. Unfortunately, because of the number of copyright violations, the filter has had to be defined quite broadly, meaning it sometimes stops uploads that aren't copyright violations. And unfortunately, instead of getting rid of the flawed upload form and directing users here to Commons (which the overwhelming majority of volunteers here would prefer), the Wikimedia Foundation thinks that leading users down this blind alley is a good idea. Should a logo that fails to meet the threshold of originality always be uploaded with the Template:PD-textlogo? I have noted that the logo for Coillte (File:Coillte Core Logo.jpg) has been uploaded under a creative commons license M G Tuffen (talk) 21:10, 20 July 2018 (UTC)

This would most likely be above the threshold of originality in the UK, but I don't know what the threshold of originality is in Ireland; Commons:Threshold of originality doesn't have an entry for it. Since Amfcoi is asserting that the copyright has been explicitly released using the specific wording of the Creative Commons CC0 Public Domain Dedication, the onus is on Amfcoi to provide some evidence of that. Given the promotional nature of their edits on English Wikipedia, it is likely that they work either directly or indirectly for the company (despite failing to declare any paid conflict of interest, in violation of the Terms of Use). adding a scanned pictures to Wikipedia

Hi, I tried to add scanned pictures of the commemorative notes from my collection to Wikipedia but all of them were rejected. Can you provide me with the detail instruction how to add this kind of scans? Best regards KS — Preceding unsigned comment added by STAK1967 (talk • contribs) 11:31, 22 July 2018 (UTC)

STAK1967: The filter you encountered prevents low-resolution uploads from newly registered users using the particular upload form that you used. The reason for this is that those overwhelmingly turn out to be copyright violations. Obviously, the bank note is not your own work, and scanning someone else's work does not make it your own work, so it would seem that the filter worked as intended. We have no information on the copyright status of currency from Bangladesh, so the assumption is that it is not in the public domain and cannot be uploaded to Commons (and if were in the public domain, you still shouldn't claim to be the author and copyright holder). Using a PC, Windows 7, Chrome. Some time late last evening, the Upload Wizard began accepting existing category names. It won't accept or redlink new category names (like it did in the past), but that's maybe a minor issue. - Tim1965 (talk) 14:58, 12 July 2018 (UTC)
It's not a minor issue. It's really annoying. I much prefer uploading the images first, and then creating the new categories. But I can't do that any more. And even when I create a category first, the Wizard can't always find it. Please, someone, put back the ability to add redlink categories!! Bahnfrend (talk) 07:51, 14 July 2018 (UTC)
According to the Phabricator thread, you now need to confirm the text you type into the category field. If you don't hit "enter" after adding the category name, it will not be transferred to Commons even if visible in the Upload Wizard. Imho this is way less user friendly than the automated category handling we had before the UW update. De728631 (talk) 21:55, 23 July 2018 (UTC)

I'm confused, Polish/Russian naming related problem

So I made Category:Tomasz Bohdanowicz-Dworzecki, looking at File:Tomasz Bohdanowicz.jpg, w:Tomasz Bohdanowicz-Dworzecki and pl:Tomasz Bohdanowicz-Dworzecki. But when I get to the data item at d:Tomasz Bohdanowicz-Dworzecki, it already has the commons cat listed as Category:Foma Bogdanovich...and...I not totally sure why. The English article lists Foma Osipovich Dvorzhetsky-Bogdanovich as an alternative name, but I don't really understand why we have someone named...well...basically Thomas in Polish and English, but with a completely different name when it is apparently translated over from Russian, or why we should use that as the Commons cat, rather than his name in Polish for a guy that was Polish (although closely tied to Moscow in his career).

Very good EugeneZelenko. Thanks for helping with your language skills. Should it be at Category:Foma Dvorzhetsky-Bogdanovich instead perhaps then? Isn't Dvorzhetsky-Bogdanovich his surname in Russian? And then I suppose redirect Category:Tomasz Bohdanowicz-Dworzecki to there? GMGtalk 14:05, 23 July 2018 (UTC)
In Russian tradition patronymic are used in names, but probably it could be omitted, if there are no other people with same name and surname. Yes, Dvorzhetsky-Bogdanovich is correct transliteration from Russian. Sure, redirect from Polish name could be created. --EugeneZelenko (talk) 14:09, 23 July 2018 (UTC)

Special:WantedCategories and category redlinks in general

This automated list shows categories that have not yet been created but are being used as redlinks on file pages. The list is limited to 5000 items though but obviously there are many more such category redlinks, and the special page does not have any built-in search option either. Is there a quick way to search for all category redlinks that match a certain string? The standard or advanced search function only returns existing categories. In particular I have been asked how to search aircraft-related category redlinks, but I don't know any convenient method how to find them. De728631 (talk) 13:34, 23 July 2018 (UTC)

You can go through Special:Categories, but that are millions of existing and non-existing but used cats. --JuTa 14:42, 23 July 2018 (UTC)
Thank you, but I think this is rather inconvenient since you can only search for the beginning of the name, but disambiguations like "(aircraft)" at the end can't be found through the search option. And browsing said millions of entries is pointless. De728631 (talk) 16:05, 23 July 2018 (UTC)
Although one could perhaps go through the registration prefixes. De728631 (talk) 16:08, 23 July 2018 (UTC)

User Satoshi Kondo has continuously uploaded spurious maps, how could I stop this ?

User Satoshi Kondo [3] has continuously uploaded spurious maps such as these following maps: [4], [5], [6], [7]. The first 3 maps exaggerate the distribution of Vietnamese-speaking areas to include large territories of Guangxi, Guangdong, Hainan, Hunan, Yunnan and northern Laos. But in fact, there is zero Vietnamese speaker in Guangxi, Guangdong, Hainan, Hunan, Yunnan except for the areas around Dongxing and Fangchenggang along the coast of Guangxi, and very few in Houaphanh province of Laos. The source that this User provides does not mention anything about the presence of Vietnamese speakers living in Guangdong, Yunnan, and Hunan. I have already explained to this User in this Talk Page [8], but this user still insists on reverting back to the erroneous versions of his maps. What am I to do, right? What can I do to stop this User from reverting back to his spurious versions ? Bookworm8899 (talk) 21:47, 23 July 2018 (UTC)

  • It's not usually Commons' job to evaluate claims like this. I suggest you upload your own maps (preferably with some references) under your own filenames, and make your case on the talk pages of the relevant Wikipedia articles as to why yours should be preferred. Also, you can tak his with {{Fact disputed}} and state your objections. - Jmabel ! talk 22:28, 23 July 2018 (UTC)

Have found in a commons svg map and have correction: next step?

Hello! I downloaded the file File:Homeric Greece.svg, and on closer look found a trifling error: there is a mark for 'dead in the Troy War' against Nestor, who actually appears alive and kicking in Odyssey. The mark should be against Nestor's son Antilochus, in the next line. For own use I have made a corrected version (newest version of Inkscape too, smaller file). Can/should I upload my corrected file?--no attribution asked for, I am just finicky. Carmenchu1812 (talk) 10:31, 24 July 2018 (UTC)

I agree; the history of the file shows a number of small corrections (one of them reversed, but apparently without fuss) and this error seems pretty straightforward. A more cautious approach would be to post a notice of your intended change on the file’s Talk page (not yet created), or those of the articles where it’s used, to see if any of the watchers object.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 19:48, 24 July 2018 (UTC)

Flag of NATO

Hi,
Using Pantone 280 actually results in a distortion of the color of the Flag of NATO. Furthermore, there is an alternative 3:5 ratio that is used by NATO. I believe that a very early guideline provided for a 3:4 ratio and this is the ratio in which I found a flag of NATO online in 2013, the basis of the current NATO flag on the Commons. I think we need to provide both the 3:5 ratio and the 3:4 ratio, and correct the color.
Link to the already existing 3:4 ratio: Flag of NATO.svg
Color guidelines are on page 6.
I uploaded the 3:5 ratio I found in the Visual Identity Guidelines Flag of NATO 3-5 ratio.svg

Copyright holder vs. copyright owner

Translating policy and guideline pages, I often come across terms "copyright holder" and "copyright owner". I wonder if they are the same thing or there are subtle differences. Here are my thoughts:

  1. Terms "copyright holder" and "copyright owner" are exactly the same thing [9] and they can be used interchangeably.
  2. There are subtle differences. For example, when author A transfers his/her rights for a certain duration of time, say 10 years, to customer C, customer C becomes the new copyright holder while author A is still the copyright owner. Ten years later, author A will become both the copyright holder and the copyright owner.

Which one is true? 4nn1l2 (talk) 16:38, 25 July 2018 (UTC)

Office Building

Hi there, I took a picture of an office building (which is still doing business). Can I upload it, and if I can't, what are the alternative solutions to getting a picture of that building on Wikipedia? Rexlikescheese (talk) 22:50, 25 July 2018 (UTC)

  • This is Wikimedia Commons, not Wikipedia. We have no direct say over what goes in any of the (several hundred) Wikipedias in various languages, although some of them require that all images to be used be hosted on Commons.
  • Whether the building is doing business or not is neither here nor there. What matters, typically, is what country it is in and (for some countries) when it was built, whether its designer is alive and if not when its designer died.
  • For the U.S., for example, a photo of pretty much any (notable) building is fine for Commons. In France, by way of contrast, their copyright law treats buildings more or less the same way U.S. law treats works of art, and almost any building built in the last century or so will have a problem. (We can't even host images of the Eiffel Tower lit up at night because the arrangement of lights is copyrighted, even though the building itself no longer is.) - Jmabel ! talk 23:19, 25 July 2018 (UTC)
Wow, no kidding! That kinda sucks. Anyway, thanks for the advice. I'll upload my photo now! (I'm in the U.S.) Rexlikescheese (talk) 23:27, 25 July 2018 (UTC)

Custom templates?

Are users allowed to make custom templates likeCategory:Custom OTRS permission template but for websites that have a creative commons license? I know of a website that has all of its texts and images released with a creative commons license compatible with Wikimedia Commons but that statement is on one page, also I would like to add all images from this website into a single maintenance category and that has proven to be a very easy thing with custom OTRS templates, however the website I wish to import from already has a free license so OTRS permission wouldn't be necessary.

Should I just link to the page where the copyright statement is made in the maintenance category or could I create a template where the copyright © license and how re-users should attribute the website, Etc. Good day,

how do i upload biographies?

regards Boitumelo — Preceding unsigned comment added by Boitumeloz (talk • contribs) 13:44, 26 July 2018 (UTC)

What kind of biography is this? We usually only host text files when the content is also used in projects like Wikisource, and only when they come with a free license or are no longer copyrighted at all. For a biographical article about a notable person, please use a Wikipedia in your native language to create a new page. Note also that we do not accept personal biographies of our users. It's really hard to understand what you're asking. Please try using some punctuation and spell checking, or if there's another language that you're more comfortable writing in, you can use that instead. Contributions to the Wikimedia Commons media repository are provided by volunteers. We don't have reporters or staff. We do have some media in Category:NH 17 (India). Lightening up an image

Hi,

I wanted to lighten the image for Tsitsi Dangarembga for her Wikipedia biography--I am planning to update the article this week.

I know how to use the crop tool, but I thought there might be more editing tools available on Wikicommons. If there are, I cannot find any. I decided to download the photo, so I could lighten the image myself and then upload a lightened version that I could use. The the download feature on her image is not working for me. Please advise. MauraWen (talk) 19:28, 26 July 2018 (UTC)

I suppose you mean File:Tsitsi Dangarembga 2006-11.jpg. The download feature on our file pages does not open a download menu directly to your harddrive. When you click the "Download" button you'll get a popup window with some urls and links to custom images sizes and "full resolution" at the bottom. The full resolution link will open the image in your browser in the original resolution: [10] There, you can right-click the image with your mouse and save it to your harddrive. Or you could simply press CTRL+S on your keyboard when viewing the full resolution page. De728631 (talk) 19:41, 26 July 2018 (UTC)
@MauraWen: I lightened the photo slightly. It shouldn't be lightened much more because the flash was fired straight into her face. This is why her clothing appears darker than it should be and her skin reflecting some of that light. For this kind of requests you can use a template like {{Wrong white balance}} or visit the photography workshop. - Alexis Jazz ping plz 20:06, 26 July 2018 (UTC)

Album Artwork

I've been repeatedly trying to fix this page in which the picture sleeve artwork it is claiming to be is incorrect. However every attempt I made at fixing the page with the correct artwork, including adding in my own scan of the artwork, it keeps getting taken down. I keep seeing other artwork on Wikipedia that I bet if I uploaded will be flagged as copyright since the right is owned by the record label such as when I look pages for albums or even songs. So, if other pages are allowed to have the album artwork on them, why can't I add in the correct artwork to the pages I want to properly fix? — Preceding unsigned comment added by SixOClockBoos (talk • contribs) 20:42, 26 July 2018 (UTC)

Please note that most album cover sleeves that you will find on the English Wikipedia were uploaded locally at the Wikipedia server under a fair use rationale. At Commons, however, we do not accept fair use content. Also, making a scan or photo of the original sleeve cover is a derivative work that retains the copyright of the original artist and therefore requires an additional permission. So if you would like to upload a new album artwork, please go to en:Wikipedia:File Upload Wizard and select "Old guided form" and then "It is the cover of an album or a single". This will lead you through a fair use upload process at Wikipedia. De728631 (talk) 20:56, 26 July 2018 (UTC)
PS: Note also that fair use uploads at Wikipedia should not be much larger than 100,000 pixels, so a size of 300 x 300 or similar should not be exceeded. De728631 (talk) 21:02, 26 July 2018 (UTC)

Merge two records

I probably didn't do this right, but the gist of the situation is that I found an image that I wanted to use for the GA we are working on for Margot Fonteyn. Unable to verify the information on-line, I had a friend in El Paso, Texas go to the University of Texas and take pictures of the cover and title page. The title page is only uploaded to confirm the copyright information.

Theatre Arts Magazine September 1957 pt 1

regarding no copyright notice and the magazine information. The image I want to use

Michael Somes and Margot Fonteyn, Theatre Arts Magazine September 1957 part 2

has been verified to have no copyright renewal. My question is how do I get the two images to refer to each other? I don't need anything other than the image for the article, but I am sure that commons wants the copyright data in the other image. Any help would be appreciated. SusunW (talk) 23:05, 26 July 2018 (UTC)

Jmabel Thanks for trying to help. I am a writer, not a technician. I shall tell you up front I am technically inept. I have absolutely no idea how to do that. I don't want to use the copyright information, I just want the image of the title page and the verification to show on the cover page image, if that makes sense. The coverpage is the only image that would ever be used in an article to my mind. The title page only exists to confirm that the cover page is not under a copyright.SusunW (talk) 23:51, 26 July 2018 (UTC)

Jmabel Can you help me with another image? I cannot find an edit button on [11] this image. Clearly the first image shows that it had no copyright notice, but I have found links to the e-bay website in archive.org as well as proof of publication in 1965 that should be on the record. Why is there no edit button to modify the data? Well I don't guess I care why, I just need to know how to add the information I found. SusunW (talk) 00:22, 27 July 2018 (UTC)
There should be an edit button. Are you on a computer, or some mobile device? Assuming it's a computer, the edit button should be near the top of the page, and you can find it by searching for "edit" the same way you search within any browser page. - Jmabel ! talk 00:30, 27 July 2018 (UTC)
Again, thank you for your help. The file is odd, as usually there is an edit button near the copyright information, but there is no such thing on this file. I just treated it like a page and went into edit and can add the links that are needed. SusunW (talk) 00:35, 27 July 2018 (UTC)

Any idea as to what's going on? – PhilipTerryGraham (talk) 23:11, 24 July 2018 (UTC)

PhilipTerryGraham: The checkered background is created using a CSS rule, which is site specific and may depend on the skin selected in your preferences. I see it for File:Firefox 61 on Windows 10.png, but not on English Wikipedia (but that's probably by design). I see no particular difference between that file and File:Firefox Quantum (57.0) on Windows 10.png. I see that the former has two revisions, so make sure you shift-reload to purge your browser's cache of the earlier one. LX (talk, contribs) 09:47, 25 July 2018 (UTC)

Also, File:鶯歌成發居匾額.jpg and File:鶯歌成發居解說牌.jpg.--Kai3952 (talk) 23:33, 18 July 2018 (UTC)
Possibly there are more, please look at 寺人孟子's contributions and you'll see that he has been doing the same thing. As a result, his edits was causing confusion for other user. For example, File:桃園大廟口派出所.jpg is new version and it shows the shooting time is "17 July 2018", but the category still "2017 photographs of Taoyuan". I hope someone can stop his vandalism.--Kai3952 (talk) 23:59, 18 July 2018 (UTC)
If you feel this is vandalism, please bring it to COM:AN/V. But it sounds to me to be more like ignorance and good intentions. I don't speak Chinese, so I can't really help out, but if someone overrides someone's photo with a different photo, you can almost always revert. - Jmabel ! talk 04:00, 19 July 2018 (UTC)
I see, he's overwriting his own photos. That's problematic, but certainly not vandalism. We need someone who knows Chinese to sort this out. - Jmabel ! talk 04:02, 19 July 2018 (UTC)
Yes. I think it would be wise to revert to the original version, because he violated the "overwriting existing files" policy. Maybe I should ask for help on zh.wikipedia.--Kai3952 (talk) 05:55, 19 July 2018 (UTC)

I have already notified him on his talk page.--Kai3952 (talk) 10:04, 26 July 2018 (UTC)

I have already notified him several times(see: his talk page, zh.wikipedia talk page, and here) and he does not seem to care about what I am saying, so I've reverted to the original version.--Kai3952 (talk) 10:03, 29 July 2018 (UTC)

Thanks kkits23--Kkits23 (talk) 02:53, 26 July 2018 (UTC)

Ok,noted.thanks Kkits23 (talk) 04:08, 26 July 2018 (UTC) Hello,Continuing the above discussion, the personal photographer(copyright holder) of actor is willing to provide the exclusive pic with valid license.Could you please advise the process, how should i proceed for replacing the older image. Thanks Kkits23 (talk) 02:51, 30 July 2018 (UTC)

Then permission should be sent as described in COM:OTRS. Make sure that the email clearly specifies exactly what license is granted. OTRS is backlogged, so it may be a few weeks to clear this up, but once that happens, then in Wikipedia you can use this photo instead of the one currently used.
If you do similar uploads in the future, it is smoother if you arrange the permission either before the upload, or immediately after. Then you can tag the file page with {{OTRS pending}} and it typically won't be deleted while the OTRS process is under way. However, once an image (like this one) has already been deleted, we don't usually undelete until the process is complete. - Jmabel ! talk 04:52, 30 July 2018 (UTC)

  • Can someone who reads Japanese please try to sort this out?
    • If it has an OTRS ticket, presumably the lack of a licensing template is just a technical error by the uploader. License should be determinable from the OTRS ticket.
    • Category:Men of Japan by name is a metacategory & should not be used directly on a file. - 18:19, 28 July 2018 (UTC)
  • Miyaさん、お忙しいところすみませんが、こちらのTicketはどうすれば良いでしょうか。Ticketの内容により許可を与えられると思いましたが、やはり何か足りないかどうかお伺いしてもよろしいですか。よろしくお願いします。Alex Shih (talk) 15:24, 29 July 2018 (UTC)
--miya (talk) 02:42, 30 July 2018 (UTC)

Questions Regarding Miniatures Buildings

I would like to uploaded photos I took at Gulliver's Gate, a set of miniatures accessible to the public. Most of the stuff there are replicas of real-life structures, such as the Eiffel Tower, Angkor Wat, Petronas Towers, etcetera. COM:FOP indicates photos of buildings, are permitted in the United States. However, it is unclear to me whether miniatures of buildings are permitted, especially when many of the dioramas are nearly indistinguishable the original, which many are in the public domain. —SpanishSnake (talk | contribs) 01:09, 30 July 2018 (UTC)

  • I would guess that the underlying works are considered sculpture, not architecture, and therefore do not qualify for Freedom of Panorama in the United States. But, insofar as they are faithful reproductions, that could be a bit tricky. This might better be asked at Commons:Village pump/Copyright. - Jmabel ! talk 04:58, 30 July 2018 (UTC)

Please look at Commons:Deletion requests/File:台北市, Xinyi District, Taiwan (Unsplash).jpg. say that "follow the links on the template", but I can't find any copyright info. I need help to determine if the copyright of the file exists.--Kai3952 (talk) 19:54, 30 July 2018 (UTC)

Questions about Watchlist

Recently I saw some kind of notice saying that a new Watchlist was being implemented. Since then my Watchlist varies wildly from day to day, although I have done nothing to change anything in my Preferences or any other place regarding it. Yesterday my Watchlist was very, very short. Today, without my doing anything, it is of normal length.

Is there something I am doing unknowingly to affect this? (I have looked at the stuff on MediaWiki but nothing seems relevant to my concerns.) Thanks, Kalbbes (talk) 15:16, 31 July 2018 (UTC)

Kalbbes: I haven't noticed changes like that, but it may depend on which options you had selected in your preferences and what you actually have on your watchlist. Not to mention that "short" and "normal" are pretty subjective.
One thing that can cause the watchlist to appear short is if you have "Group changes by page in recent changes and watchlist" selected in the recent changes settings. Especially if there are a lot of edits for a single page or a lot of entries grouped under the deletion log or upload log entries, then you can hit the "Maximum number of changes to show in watchlist" (which can't be set higher than 1000) without the watchlist appearing that long until you expand those entries. LX (talk, contribs) 15:33, 31 July 2018 (UTC)
LX: I'm aware of the problems that selecting "Group changes by page in recent changes and watchlist" can cause and in the past have removed those. I have always set 1000 and 30 days in Preferences. The problem is that I haven't changed anything on my Watchlist selections in Preferences and yet the variations change from day to day. By "short" I mean (estimating) say 100, and only one day's worth. Today it shows (estimating) 700 and two days. I have a lot of items on my Watchlist because I've created many categories but most of them show up only rarely. Maybe the whole problem will go away as mysteriously as it came. I thought that maybe because "they" were fiddling with the Watchlist, that may have caused problems because (for me) it was fine the way it was. Thanks, Kalbbes (talk) 16:33, 31 July 2018 (UTC)
The changes consist mainly of new ways of applying filters and automatic updating. (The latter is quite nice.) You could always opt out of this latest set of changes at the bottom of Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-watchlist and see whether or not the problem persists.
