images from US Federal Gov't websites

Can we upload images from websites owned/operated by the Federal Government, such as msc.navy.mil ? Thanks Thewolfchild (talk) 23:06, 31 March 2018 (UTC)

@Thewolfchild: Not necessarily. Is there a particular image on a particular page that concerns you?   — Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me 23:12, 31 March 2018 (UTC)
No, actually I'd like to be able to upload some ship images for US Navy articles and lists on WP. Just don't know very much about uploading images here. Thewolfchild (talk) 23:18, 31 March 2018 (UTC)
@Thewolfchild: Would you please offer an example and follow Commons:First Steps?   — Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me 23:29, 31 March 2018 (UTC)
Here's an example. But basically, when I do an image search on Google for various naval ships, all kinds of pics pop up from sites like msc.navy.mil, navy.mil, cpf.navy.mil, and other .mil and .gov sites. I was under the impression that images from the federal gov't were public domain, I tried hunting around the archives to confirm, but couldn't find a clear answer. Thanks Thewolfchild (talk) 23:36, 31 March 2018 (UTC)
The problem is that US Government sites often host content they don’t own, be it from contractors, other countries’ agencies, retired personnel, or wherever. That said, photos specifically credited to Navy personnel are almost certainly PD (unless there‘s reason to believe they were off duty), likewise for any other federal employee or agency. As for that example page, the middle picture has a Navy credit right in the caption, so is an easy pass. The others would need more checking, see if they have EXIF metadata identifying the photographer, for example.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 23:44, 31 March 2018 (UTC)
That raises an interesting question; often on military news sites, like usni.org, there is often images attached to stories with captions that specifically include info such as; "image by US Navy Mass Communications Specialist 2nd Class John Smith". Does that make the image available to the public? Or it protected because it's hosted on a non-government site? Thewolfchild (talk) 23:57, 31 March 2018 (UTC)
@Thewolfchild: The former.   — Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me 00:02, 1 April 2018 (UTC)
(Edit conflict) @Thewolfchild: PD is PD, no matter who publishes it. Make sure it hasn’t been modified or adapted, however, because derivative works (other than faithful reproductions) get their own copyright. Otherwise you can generally assume that PD material is exempted from any copyright notices appearing on a page.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 00:15, 1 April 2018 (UTC)

@Jeff G, cool, thanks. Now (either of you... or anyone) how do I find the "EXIF metadata" for the first image in the example? If I right click on it, then 'properties', it doesn't really show anything. OTOH, "view source" and "inspect element"... both show all kinds of stuff, but is the info I need there... somewhere? NM... I found it. Thanks Thewolfchild (talk) 00:11, 1 April 2018 (UTC)

@Odysseus1479: ok, so as long as these images were taken by navy personnel, and that's confirmed in the caption or the metadata, and there's nothing to indicate it's been altered, then it should be safe to upload? (and I take it the 'upload wizard' will tell what info I need to include and where, prior to uploading?) If I have all this right, then great, I got what I needed and we're done here. Thanks to both of you for the help. Cheers Thewolfchild (talk) 00:21, 1 April 2018 (UTC)
@Thewolfchild: You can check the metadata at this site.   — Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me 00:25, 1 April 2018 (UTC)
Well, that's handy. Thanks again Thewolfchild (talk) 00:28, 1 April 2018 (UTC)

Question

Hi i have a question i want to upload some photos that are not on Wiki Commons and i would like to take some from google. But I've noticed this option on google that saids labeled for reuse. Can i take those images and upload them. Also which option do i check of when putting an image from google that it is my own work is it someone else? Thank you. — Preceding unsigned comment added by ALBA LUSHNJE (talk • contribs) 15:07, 2 April 2018

ALBA LUSHNJE Most images you find on the internet, by Google or any other search engine, are likely copyright and may not be uploaded. Even with a Google search, you need to go to the individual pages where the images appear, not just the page Google shows you, and see if there is any statement that the images are freely licensed. Google has an advanced search option where you can choose "licensed for commercial use and modifications" which is what we require, but even then you need to verify the copyright status. This page, Commons:Free media resources/Photography, is a list of sites that contain freely licensed images you might find useful. Otherwise post a link to the image you are interested in uploading and someone will tell you if it is allowable or not. Good luck. Ww2censor (talk) 13:25, 2 April 2018 (UTC)
@ALBA LUSHNJE: You may only upload files which have licenses which comply with COM:L. If you did not take the photo or design the image, it is not solely your own work. COM:FS should help you get started.   — Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me 13:38, 2 April 2018 (UTC)

videos

What can we do on common because there not in videos on common?

— Preceding unsigned comment added by Pussygirl5219393 (talk • contribs)

  • @Pussygirl5219393: That makes very little sense. Assuming that by "common" you mean Wikimedia Commons, this site, there are videos on Commons.
  • If there is some other language you speak better, feel free to ask in that language, probably someone will understand and answer. - Jmabel ! talk 04:18, 3 April 2018 (UTC)

Question

I want to upload photos from google using the advanced option you guys require known as licensed for commercial use and modifications and i dont know if i put this photo from google do i say it is a work of my own or this is not a work of my own please help me thank you? — Preceding unsigned comment added by ALBA LUSHNJE (talk • contribs) 13:00, 3 April 2018‎ (UTC)

  • Signing your posts on talk pages is required and it is a Commons guideline to sign your posts on deletion requests, undeletion requests, and noticeboards. To do so, simply add four tildes (~~~~) at the end of your comments. Your user name or IP address (if you are not logged in) and a timestamp will then automatically be added when you save your comment. Signing your comments helps people to find out who said something and provides them with a link to your user/talk page (for further discussion). Thank you.   — Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me 13:05, 3 April 2018 (UTC)
Not a work of your own, you have to follow the license from the non-Google page where you found the photo, it probably requires attribution to the photographer. Please read COM:FS and COM:L.   — Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me 13:05, 3 April 2018 (UTC)
"Own work" would mean you were the photographer. - Jmabel ! talk 15:21, 3 April 2018 (UTC)

And also that there are four photos, and they are all the same problem.
@Kai3952: The first and last look like dusk/twilight, the rest just overcast.   — Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me 20:22, 3 April 2018 (UTC)
Overcast? If this is the case, what category would you put it in?--Kai3952 (talk) 20:32, 3 April 2018 (UTC)
@Kai3952: I would put the first in Category:Structures in Taipei.   — Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me 03:38, 4 April 2018 (UTC)
(Edit conflict) I would still call them twilight, because the electric lights are on. Cities create a “light dome” which can reflect off clouds to prolong the twilight with the glow from an unnaturally bright sky. OTOH the sun might not be below the horizon, but when low enough and through heavy enough cloud it might as well be.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 03:43, 4 April 2018 (UTC)
I do not understand why it is not "Buildings in Taipei" category.--Kai3952 (talk) 03:47, 4 April 2018 (UTC)
@Kai3952: The distinction between buildings and structures is that buildings can hold one or more persons, and non-building structures like statues, memorials, and mere walls can't.   — Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me 03:56, 4 April 2018 (UTC)
Do you say that the "rest" is File:台北市夜景 - panoramio (3).jpg, File:中信金融園區 CTBC Financial Park - panoramio.jpg, File:Lungshantemple night taipei.jpg three photos?--Kai3952 (talk) 04:20, 4 April 2018 (UTC)
@Kai3952: Yes, all probably buildings.   — Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me 04:42, 4 April 2018 (UTC)
I have removed "Structures in Taipei at night" category and request the file name to be renamed.--Kai3952 (talk) 05:52, 4 April 2018 (UTC)

@Jeff G.: I agree that English distinguishes "buildings" from the more general "structures", but I think the line isn't quite where you drew it. The Statue of Liberty; a ferris wheel; and an open, roofed picnic shelter are structures, aren't buildings, and can hold one or more persons. Conversely, a grain silo isn't normally something people enter (though I suppose technically they can), but would likely be called a building. I think a formal boundary would be hard to define. There's some gray zone here, where educated native speakers could reasonably argue whether a certain structure was a building. - Jmabel ! talk 05:00, 4 April 2018 (UTC)

@Jmabel and Jeff G.: Typically, this is not a problem for me. But I know there are many people in Taiwan who have this doubt, and even they will mistake "structures" as "buildings".--Kai3952 (talk) 05:35, 4 April 2018 (UTC)

Uploading images by a person who is not an author

Hello, if I am not a copyright holder, but the author gives me a right to distribute, to use the works of him (her), is my license acceptable? Or Can I upload the pictures (works) of him (her)? The same question is true about a website. If a website has permission to use, to distribute the works of someone, can it upload the works of others (who give the permission) to Wikipedia (commons)? Thank you. Human7777 (talk) 12:49, 2 April 2018 (UTC)

@Human7777: in both cases, the copyright holder needs to send permission via OTRS.   — Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me 13:44, 2 April 2018 (UTC)
Note that this doesn't have to be on a per-photo basis. A copyright-holder can indicate that you are trusted and authorized to upload on their behalf, and then you can repeatedly use the same ticket for future uploads of that person's work. - Jmabel ! talk 15:32, 2 April 2018 (UTC)
... Via a template.   — Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me 16:48, 2 April 2018 (UTC)

Thank you very much Jeff and Jmabel. One more question, please. If a person or a website provides a legal agreement that he (she) has legal permission to use, to distrubite the works of an enterprise or a person, still the copyright holder needs to send permission via OTRS? Human7777 (talk) 10:28, 3 April 2018 (UTC)

@Human7777: Yes, unless that information is online and referenced specifically in the file description page.   — Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me 10:33, 3 April 2018 (UTC)

Thank you Jeff, one more question just for final clarification. I understand that if a person (a website) has a legal permission from the author, the information is online and referenced specifically in the file description page, it does not need to send permission via OTRS? Human7777 (talk) 11:14, 4 April 2018 (UTC)

@Human7777: Correct.   — Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me 15:04, 4 April 2018 (UTC)

Merci d'avance.

Cordialement

Question re Historical photos and documents. Proper author/date/country of creation information

Dear folks,

Received this message re "Historical photos and documents. Proper author/date/country of creation information should be supplied to determine copyrights status and license tags corrected." Not sure what is required to satisfy this request. Almost all images cited are from photos taken by me or the staff of the National Archives and Records Administration Washington or the Department of the Navy Library. Most of the are well over one hundred year old documents or images in the public domain. Please help me with an example for a go by. I am new to WIKI, so any help or suggestions to satisfy or model this requirement is much appreciated.

Many thanks

Jack — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jackmegill (talk • contribs) 03:28, 5 April 2018 (UTC)

There is no general answer to any of this, so I'll grab a few of your uploads more or less at random to look at what might be going on.
  • File:Pensacola May 1829.jpg:
    • You say "own work"; I presume that applies just to the photograph or scan, since if the document is what you say it is, then it can hardly be your own work. Also, similarly, you give the date as "10 May 2010", but presumably it is 1829.
    • Assuming this is from 1829, it pretty much has to be in the public domain, but I see you are claiming a copyright. What are you saying are copyrightable elements? I don't think the curvature in photographing the page is enough to be copyrightable. As far as I can tell, you don't have any copyrightable contribution here, so you can't grant a CC-BY-SA-4.0 license. Either it is public domain or it isn't. Presumably it is.
    • So it would seem to me that the actual author is whoever made the entries in the ledger, presumably something like "unknown employee of Pensacola Navy Yard." Source should be something like "1829 Pensacola Navy Yard payroll, photographed by User:Jackmegill at the Department of the Navy Library", or just the name of the volume. If the volume in question was something broader than just the 1829 Pensacola Navy Yard payroll, adjust that accordingly.
    • Licensing: I would think {{PD-USGov}} is a reasonably safe bet, as would {{PD-old-assumed}}. Also, if it was published before 1923, there would be yet another basis for public domain, but I wouldn't presume that without evidence of publication.
    • (side issue) Not a great title. Something like "May 1829 Pensacola Navy Yard payroll" would be a lot clearer. Maybe even "May 1829 Pensacola Navy Yard payroll, showing slave laborers".
    • (side issue) "Mary"?
    • (side issue) Needs some appropriate categories, e.g. Category:Pensacola Navy Yard, Category:Time books, Category:1829 in the United States.
  • File:George Teamoh 1818 to after 1887 LOC photo.jpg (I'm going to be less thorough here.)
    • You give a date of "19 January 1865" but then say "Photo is dated sometime after 1865 by LOC". Which is it? Maybe given the "to after 1887" in the filename, {{other date|between|1865|1887}}, which shows as "between 1865 and 1887
      date QS:P,+1850-00-00T00:00:00Z/7,P1319,+1865-00-00T00:00:00Z/9,P1326,+1887-00-00T00:00:00Z/9
      "?
    • Again, even more clearly than for the other, I don't see where you would own any rights that would be the basis for you to grant a CC-BY-SA-4.0 license. Presumably {{PD-USGov}} should apply; also {{PD-old-assumed}} would be sane (but weaker because of the need to assume death date of photographer).
    • Again, could be given better categories.
  • File:John Rodgers to Samuel Evans Dec 10 1822 re wage limits Brooklyn Navy Yard.jpg
  • In general, very similar issues to the first one, except that in this case the author is known: Commodore John Rodgers. Presumably his death date could be worked out, so you could also have a more precise PD tag invoking the year of the author's death. However, given that he obviously wrote this in his capacity as a federal employee, {{PD-USGov}} is safe.
  • (side issue) Where did you get the category Category:Brooklyn Navy Yard Samuel Evans? I see no indication that such a Commons category ever existed, and it would be an oddly named one if it did.
Country of creation for all of these is obviously U.S. If some of them were by naval personnel serving abroad, that could imaginably get more complicated, but I believe that if they are U.S. Navy documents rather than photographs, that is irrelevant. For photographs, it could imaginably matter, and you might need a separate PD justification for country of origin. (Commons requires that PD or "free license" apply in country of origin & in U.S., generally no requirement about any other jurisdictions.)
I hope that helps. Obviously, these have to be taken up one by one, but if they are all like this, they should be pretty straightforward. - Jmabel ! talk 05:00, 5 April 2018 (UTC)
I now see this must have been triggered by Commons:Deletion requests/Files uploaded by Jackmegill. You didn't link that, so I just started looking at your uploads. I haven't even checked to see if the ones I discussed above were explicitly mentioned there, but all your uploads presumably need to be cleaned up in this respect, whether Eugene specifically nominated them for deletion or not. And you need to address the deletion discussion at Commons:Deletion requests/Files uploaded by Jackmegill, not somewhere else (like here), or the deletions are liable to go ahead a bit "blindly" if it looks like you aren't responding.
@Jackmegill: The short of this: this is good material, it should be in scope; you have a bit to learn about what info Commons needs, please stick around and let's work through this. - Jmabel ! talk 05:14, 5 April 2018 (UTC)

approval to re-use picture taken by Gerard van der Schaaf for publication

Dear sir(s),

The Dutch Safety Board (DSB) would like to use a picture of the aircraft registered as PH-MFT as found on Wikimedia Commons. This picture (file PH-MFT 8648361571) was taken by Gerard van der Schaaf.

DSB would like to implement this picture in its Quaterly Bulletin to be issued in April/May 2018 as the aircraft was involved in a recent incident. Hope to hear fro you soon.

Kindest regards, Dutch Safety Board

You do not need to request approval to use files on Commons as long as you comply with any licensing requirements listed on the file description page; see Commons:Reusing content outside Wikimedia. All the information you need is on the file description page, including a link to the license with which you need to comply – in this case: Creative Commons Attribution 2.0 (full terms).
If you cannot comply with those licensing requirements, the only one who can give approval for use under different terms is the copyright holder – in this case: https://www.flickr.com/people/34153108@N06. LX (talk, contribs) 09:51, 5 April 2018 (UTC)

Hi, I have the Template:LangSwitch used for the red banner on my talkpage - When I translate my Commons talkpage to different languages on various website it converts it to that language .... so my question is Do I need to have the langswitch template ?
If you're on a Swedish laptop then I want my whole talkpage to show in Swedish, If you're on a Russian laptop then I want my whole talkpage to show in Russian,
Does that make sense?, I don't know if my talkpage primarily shows as English to for instance a Swedish person,
Thanks, –Davey2010Talk 16:21, 5 April 2018 (UTC)

I don‘t know how the template works in detail, but I‘m pretty sure it doesn’t really translate anything: rather it relies on pre-written translations, merely selecting the appropriate one for the user-preferred or selected language, if available. So only ‘boilerplate‘ template messages with the switch can work that way; everything else remains in its original language.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 17:07, 5 April 2018 (UTC)

Can I upload the copies of an antifascist newspaper called Pesti Posta which was published in Hungary in 1944?

It was published by my uncle in Hungarian in nine issues. It is mentioned in Wikipedia already. I have it in PDF format. It is out of copyright protection and I am the inheritor of rights anyhow. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Qqbasil (talk • contribs) 03:07, 4 April 2018 (UTC)

(Edit conflict) @Qqbasil: did your uncle create all the content, or were there other contributors? In what year did he die? According to our summary of Hungarian copyright law, the duration is 70 years after the death of the (or each) author. Do the magazines have a masthead stating under what terms the material was submitted?—Odysseus1479 (talk) 03:23, 4 April 2018 (UTC)
Have you ever seen a magazine with a masthead starting under what terms the material was submitted? I haven't. I know such nice legal details have been lost for older issues of such magazines as Weird Tales and Dragon magazine, so I wouldn't hold my breath, but there might be legal documents making rights clear. The original poster presumably knows that his uncle's writings are under his ownership, but for any one else, the best bet is to find the current rights holders.--Prosfilaes (talk) 03:04, 7 April 2018 (UTC)

@Jmabel: I don't see the latter as being inferior. However, the fact that neither page directly credits photographer Mona T. Brooks is concerning.   — Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me 08:40, 6 April 2018 (UTC)

Hi I uploaded the new and current version of the Boral logo (File:Boral Logo 2018.png ) which is now on the Boral wiki page (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boral ) There is an older, previous version of the logo (https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Boral_Logo.svg ) I do not think it is correct to have two separate file pages of the Boral logo. I think both logos should really be on the same file page with the details provided under the heading File History like for example (https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Avestaforsen.jpg ) Can someone help? --PinkAechFas (talk) 08:08, 6 April 2018 (UTC)

@PinkAechFas: Sorry, this is impossible because the files are in different formats.   — Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me 08:30, 6 April 2018 (UTC)

Hi Jeff G.( G. ツ talk to me) thanks for the message. Do you think then that I should try to remove/delete the old file?--PinkAechFas (talk) 09:08, 6 April 2018 (UTC)

@PinkAechFas: No, but you might want to modify it to add the "®". BTW, your mention didn't work because you chose my talk links.   — Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me 10:13, 6 April 2018 (UTC)
@PinkAechFas: I think the important question is whether File:Boral Logo.svg is an accurate representation of a historical logo, or just an inaccurate representation of the current logo. If it's accurate then it should stay even if it's historical: we have a lot of historical images here on Commons. Of course, in that case you can and should update the descriptive text on File:Boral Logo.svg to describe the situation. If the old file is merely incorrect then you might be able to argue that it has no realistic educational use and hence should be deleted. --bjh21 (talk) 11:18, 6 April 2018 (UTC)

Thanks for the assistance and I have updated the descriptive text on the Boral Logo svg page--PinkAechFas (talk) 21:51, 6 April 2018 (UTC)

No, as it is derivative, but if it is Template:PD-Ineligible I think you can, usually it's better to upload logo's to Wikipedia directly unless they are too simple to be copyrighted by the organisation. --Donald Trung 『徵國單』 (Talk 💬) (WikiProject Numismatics 💴) (Articles 📚) 12:31, 6 April 2018 (UTC)

Greetings,

I have submitted a photograph of Richard R Wright jr., ca. 1920, which I found in a recent book about his life titled "Segregated Scholars." I believe because the photograph is dated prior to 1923, it is public domain.

--Andre&Durkheim (talk) 18:34, 6 April 2018 (UTC)

@Andre&Durkheim: is there evidence the photo was published before 1923? Is the photographer identified, or the provenance given in the book? If anonymous and its first publication was in the 2006 book, it will be copyrighted until c. 2041 (c. 1920 + 120y).—Odysseus1479 (talk) 18:54, 6 April 2018 (UTC)

  • On the painting, the frame may make it problematic to use that particular photo. (Photo would have its own copyright, since it is in part a photo of a 3D object.) Might be possible to crop it down to what is PD; ideally, to vignette it to the oval. - Jmabel ! talk 00:09, 7 April 2018 (UTC)

I need to change the image associated to a wikipedia page updating an official logo since it is recently changed. The logo has been prepared by our graphic expert for us. I cannot do it since I do not have a common licence. How can I do it? Thank you — Preceding unsigned comment added by Francytres (talk • contribs) 13:09, 5 April 2018 (UTC)

  • @Francytres: I have little or no idea what you mean by "I do not have a common licence." I'm guessing there is something you are confused about.
  • The answer to your question is going to depend on whether the new logo is sufficiently complex to be eligible for copyright. If it's near the borderline for that, it's going to depend on what country your organization is in, because the threshold varies for different countries. There might be some other considerations involved as well. Rather than my laying out half a dozen scenarios, can you (1) link the Wikipedia page in question, (2) link to somewhere on line where we can see the new logo? Thanks. - Jmabel ! talk 15:47, 5 April 2018 (UTC)

Hi in fact I've used the wrong words. What I mean is that I do not have the copyright personally but the logo belongs to the Association I work for. The page is https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/European_Renal_Association_%E2%80%93_European_Dialysis_and_Transplant_Association and the new logo is visibile here http://web.era-edta.org/ in the official ERA-EDTA Website. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Francytres (talk • contribs) 08:01, 6 April 2018 (UTC)

Thank you.   — Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me 08:23, 6 April 2018 (UTC)

Can we show pictures of a dictionary page?

Hi, I was wondering - are pictures of dictionary entries OK as far as copyright goes? I'm specifically thinking of things like this: File:Turk. Dictionary.jpg. (Edit conflict) Despite the tag on that image, AFAICT it is not PD in the USA because it was not free in Israel until 1997 or 1999 (50 years after creation, per COM:CRT#Israel—the filename and description disagree on the date). So I don‘t think it can be hosted here, and it shouldn‘t be on enWP either, unless there’s some reason the Israeli copyright would have expired by 1995.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 02:07, 12 April 2018 (UTC) P.S. Logo editing help needed

I'm not sure if this is the right place to ask, but I need someone to upload a new version of File:Wikipedia-logo-v2-sco.svg, with the new version being an edit of File:Wikipedia-logo-v2-en.svg with "Wikipaedia" as the project name and "The Free Encyclopaedia" as the text below it. I tried and tried and tried, but I couldn't get my Inkscape to edit the text because I'm a worthless embarassment of the Millenial generation in technology. But if someone could do that, I'd be grateful, as the current logo uses the archaic "Æ" character as well as being lower quality it looks like. --AmaryllisGardener talk 06:13, 9 April 2018 (UTC)

I do not see a difference in quality between English and Scots version, the Scots version is already derived from the English one and both are same size. Do I understand it right, AmaryllisGardener, you want to replace the ligatures Æ and æ with their separated counterparts? Are the ligatures really not used anymore (no hint at all for possible ligatures in the en:Modern Scots article)? You could ask Odder (should be pinged now) who created the existing derivative. — Speravir – 00:41, 13 April 2018 (UTC)
The logo was created with the ligatures based on a translation provided over at User:Cbrown1023/Logos by one of the contributors to the Scots Wikipedia a few years ago. As the logo has been used on the project for quite some time, I would like to see a community consensus to have it changed before deploying a new version without the ligatures. odder (talk) 20:08, 13 April 2018 (UTC)
Hence why I said above, "I suspect you should upload to a different name, rather than overwrite someone else's work on a point where they may disagree with you." - Jmabel ! talk 23:43, 13 April 2018 (UTC)

Barred windows ~ window grills

There are two categories containing similar images: Category:Barred windows and Category:Window grills. Is there really a difference between the two types (e.g. a window grill is smaller and fully contained in the window frame) or are they just the same?--Carnby (talk) 11:49, 14 April 2018 (UTC)

Is it always better to have any correct category for a file rather than leave it uncategorized?

Categorization of uncategorized media is sort of on-again, off-again hobby of mine. Sometimes I've used tools to categorize a number of uncategorized images using some very general category, say "Men". One hopes correctly.

Lets say I categorize some file correctly but into a very broad category. Is this ultimately beneficial? It would be better, of course, to categorize as exactly as possible, but is it at least better to categorize with a broad brush than leave them in the "media needing categories"-category? Voltteri (talk) 21:40, 18 April 2018 (UTC)

@Voltteri: In your example, it would probably be better to categorize it as Category:Unidentified men instead of "Men". This is a subcategory of Category:Undercategorised files where you will find more of those broad categories. - Alexis Jazz 22:31, 18 April 2018 (UTC)
Yes, in general any push in an appropriate direction helps, and may bring the file to the attention of users who are working on refining the categorization within a given field. Alexis makes a good point, though: the higher-level cats often have ‘holding pens‘ to reduce clutter. So have a quick look at the target cat first, to make sure it’s not a meta-category and to see if any obviously apt sub-cats present themselves.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 06:01, 19 April 2018 (UTC)

Pixlr Photo Editor Book

I saw the Pixlr Photo Editor book had not been updated since 2016 and want to update the book. Since the book is about photo editing, I need to use a lot of screen shots from Pixlr. There is no book about Pixlr Photo Editor that I can find on line. There are a couple of million users of Pixlr. So I figure this is worthwhile project. However, if I can use a lot of Pixlr screen shots, it makes this project impossible. So I guess my questions are: 1. Can I use Pixlr Photo Editor screen shots legally? 2. How to make association football line-up diagrams

I notice there are a bunch of association football line-up diagrams that all appear to be made with the same tool; e.g. File:Sporting Kansas City vs New York Red Bulls 2017-09-20.svg (edit: here's a whole category full of them). Does anyone have a link to that tool? Thanks, IagoQnsi (talk) 17:58, 16 April 2018 (UTC)

Can I post FBI mugshot circa 1951?

Dear Wikimedia Help,

There are at least 3 photocopied mugshots from a declassified FOIA-ed file about William Albertson (an entry I just started):

Do you agree that, since the FBI has made its own photos public, someone (e.g., me) may post one of these images as a headshot of Albertson in his InfoBox?

Please advise.

Gratefully – Aboudaqn (talk) 18:08, 16 April 2018 (UTC)

@Aboudaqn: Photos being made public does not automatically make them public domain. However, if the images were created by the FBI, then you can use {{PD-USGov-FBI}} as the license. –IagoQnsi (talk) 18:13, 16 April 2018 (UTC)
Thank you! Aboudaqn (talk) 18:21, 16 April 2018 (UTC)
I don't read FBI files every day, but I wonder why that document includes drawings of mugshots instead of the actual photos? - Alexis Jazz 18:15, 16 April 2018 (UTC)
I've looked only at pre-1960 FBI files and find them quite primitive – but, then again, think how far behind many Government agencies remain in terms of outdated IT hardware and software, and photocopied photos comes as less surprise. Aboudaqn (talk) 18:21, 16 April 2018 (UTC)
Posted on Wikipedia entry: looks better cropped and smaller than in the FBI files – a little like the Wall Street Journal's famous headshot style. Thank you again: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Albertson — Preceding unsigned comment added by Aboudaqn (talk • contribs)

Hello. I recently uploaded this file and another movie poster file believing that they did not require copyright status. It seems that I was wrong. The problem is that I do not really know how to check what copyright status I should put. Thank you for your help.--Lanbrobeltz (talk) 18:44, 16 April 2018 (UTC)

@Lanbrobeltz: In general, the way copyright works, you should assume that all works are copyrighted and non-free (and therefore cannot be uploaded to Wikimedia Commons) unless you specifically know that they're not. The primary way that an image becomes free is if the copyright holder publishes it with a free license (i.e. they have to explicitly declare that they are giving the image a free license). An image can also be free if it is in the public domain, which can happen if it's very old (i.e. more than roughly 95 years old), created by certain government agencies whose work is always public domain, or is too simple to be eligible for copyright. You can read more about this at Commons:Licensing. –IagoQnsi (talk) 19:11, 16 April 2018 (UTC)
@Lanbrobeltz: Kubo and the Two Strings, clearly not in the public domain yet. The poster has already been uploaded to Wikipedia: w:en:File:Kubo and the Two Strings poster.png. You are probably looking for w:en:Wikipedia:Non-free content. For other language Wikipedia, see the local equivalent of that page. If there is none, no movie posters for you. Sorry. - Alexis Jazz 20:23, 16 April 2018 (UTC)
@Alexis Jazz: Oh, so that is why there are posters on the English version of Wikipedia but not on the Spanish. Understood. Thank you both for the information.-Lanbrobeltz (talk) 22:42, 16 April 2018 (UTC)
@Lanbrobeltz: Fair use of works that are still in copyright is something that depends on the law of the country and the policies from that language Wikipedia. Italian Wikipedia for example allows fair use as well: w:it:File:Bolt (Disney) nel deserto.png. As I see no Spanish translation on w:en:Wikipedia:Non-free content it looks like you're indeed out of luck. Not much you can do about this. - Alexis Jazz 21:47, 16 April 2018 (UTC)

New batch of photos uploaded, needs Category/Gallery review

Further to this copyright discussion with Clindberg and Jeff G., I've uploaded a set of photos by Robert Randall about the making of the film 55 Days at Peking. I have attempted to create new categories on Commons for Robert Randall and 55 Days at Peking, but got a bit mixed up with Categories vs Galleries. I'd be grateful if an "expert" could take a look. Thanks. --Muzilon (talk) 10:13, 17 April 2018 (UTC)

@Muzilon: Category:Robert Randall (photographer) and Category:55 Days at Peking are good categories, but they themselves need to be categorized. Robert Randall (photographer) is an empty gallery, you can fill it as you see fit using the gallery tag, arrangement, and captioning you feel best. For his bio, I was thinking of cropping and rotating the photo at https://www.newspapers.com/clip/18458490/ for fair use on enwiki, but I do not like the quality. Do you have a better alternative?   — Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me 12:55, 17 April 2018 (UTC)
@Jeff G.: Sorry, I'm afraid I can't help with a high-res photo of Randall. I'm also not very familiar with creating Galleries and Categories on Commons. When I added the {{Commons}} template on the respective WP articles for Randall and 55 Days to produce the standard message "Wikipedia Commons has media relating to..." I was a bit perplexed to find this created a link to the Category page for 55 Days, but to the Gallery (not Category) page for Randall. Why is this? --Muzilon (talk) 13:37, 17 April 2018 (UTC)
@Muzilon: w:Template:Commons is supposed to link to a gallery, while w:Template:Commons category is supposed to link to a category; I suggest using the latter until you have a gallery worthy of a link.   — Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me 14:03, 17 April 2018 (UTC)
OK then. I see another editor has already deleted the empty Gallery page anyway.--Muzilon (talk) 23:09, 17 April 2018 (UTC)

@Leslie Highland: This site is only a store of media (photos, videos, sounds, etc). We don't sell anything, and all that we know about that trailer is on the page you linked to. The picture was uploaded in 2006 by Malolelei, who has never done anything else on the site, though they did update the Wikipedia pages en:Bicycle trailer and en:Bicycle touring at the same time. You might be able to get in touch with them by email or through their talk page, but given how long it has been, I suspect those won't work. The original photo mentioned "bike-buggy.com", but that domain now hosts a Japanese blog, so I think it's been taken over. Photograph Copyright Holder when Photographer Passed Away

Hello,

I would like to upload the photo of an album cover which was shot by photographer Vasco Nunes (who is listed in Wikipedia) but he passed away in 2016. Does this make someone else the copyright holder or is the photo simply unable to be uploaded? I don't want to violate the copyright but I'm unsure as to who that belongs to in this circumstance, and who I should reach out to for permission.

Thanks very much, Amandadoyle543 (talk) 04:54, 18 April 2018 (UTC)

@Amandadoyle543: his work will likely remain in copyright (in both the USA and Portugal) until the end of 2086. Rights to the photo presumably belong to his heirs or estate, unless perhaps he sold them outright to the record producers, or took the picture as their employee. If the album or the photo itself are discussed in a Wikipedia article, more than just a mention or listing, you might be able to upload an image to that project with a fair-use rationale. But in order to host it on this site we would need a free licence from the copyright holder(s), verified through COM:OTRS.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 05:22, 18 April 2018 (UTC)

Categorization of files

Hi, anybody hanging around who would be able to give a helping hand? I mean, would it make sense to create a category (name to be discussed) and add it to the Category:Adolf Erik Nordenskiöld? Thank you for your time. Lotje (talk) 05:38, 18 April 2018 (UTC)

Imo Category:Vegas färd kring Asien och Europa (1881) --> Robert Haglund ? Lotje (talk) 05:48, 18 April 2018 (UTC)
(Edit conflict) There seem to be a couple of different books represented in those results. Or are you thinking of a category for the Vega Expedition in general? From a quick glance there are several more files & cats that could go in there; it could fall under Adolf Erik Nordenskiöld, Vega (ship, 1872), and Circumnavigation, for starters. (We don’t seem to have a cat for the Northeast Passage.)—Odysseus1479 (talk) 06:00, 18 April 2018 (UTC)
@Odysseus1479: difficult choice to make. Starting with Vega expedition you mean, and just add all the files to that category? Is there a need for italic in the title of that category then? Lotje (talk) 10:40, 18 April 2018 (UTC)

The attribution we use here at File:Atlanta Skyline from Buckhead.jpg in wikitext is "[https://www.flickr.com/people/13331510@N00 Chuck Koehler] from Cartersville, GA, USA", which evaluates to "Chuck Koehler from Cartersville, GA, USA". In HTML, that would be "<a href="https://www.flickr.com/people/13331510@N00">Chuck Koehler</a>from Cartersville, GA, USA". You may just use the link for the source page https://www.flickr.com/photos/13331510@N00/355135172 or the named version Atlanta Skyline from Buckhead, both of which already attribute the photographer, but that risks loss of info in case of photo deletion or account cancellation at Flickr.   — Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me 14:51, 18 April 2018 (UTC)

Incorrectly received .ogg file from API request for images

I got this file back from an API request with &grnnamespace=6. This seems incorrect but I have no idea how to fix it. Any pointers on how media type categories are managed would be appreciated! Personman (talk) 02:27, 20 April 2018 (UTC)

That's the "file" namespace, it contains files of all types. --ghouston (talk) 03:27, 20 April 2018 (UTC)
oh, huh. someone on stackoverflow said it was for just images and i believed them. oh well. is there a way to request images only? Personman (talk) 05:05, 20 April 2018 (UTC)
I think you'd have to look at the mime type for each file you get back and ignore the ones you don't want. --ghouston (talk) 06:33, 20 April 2018 (UTC)
@Personman: I can't immediately find a way to ask for only images to be returned, but if you use prop=imageinfo&iiprop=mediatype you'll get back the high-level media type of each file, and then if you ask for a few files (e.g. with grnlimit=10) you can filter for BITMAP on the client side. Note that because images were the first kind of file handled by MediaWiki, a bunch of bits of the API use "image" where they mean "file" (like in imageinfo). Also, if you haven't found the API Sandbox, you should: it's my first port of call when I want to work out how to do something with the API. --bjh21 (talk) 10:51, 20 April 2018 (UTC)

Photographs taken in places where photography is not permitted

There are images in Wikimedia that have been licensed for commercial purposes despite having been taken in places (for example the British Museum) where photography, certainly for commercial purposes, is not permitted. Is there any formal verification that somebody contributing 'own work' was entitled to take photographs for such purposes in the first place? — Preceding unsigned comment was added by 82.32.76.136 (talk) 16:01, 20 April 2018 (UTC)

In such places, photographers take photos at their own risk. Use of their photos in certain ways is prohibited by non-copyright restrictions. We have some tags for such photos to warn reusers in certain countries or circumstances of the risks, but we do not delete such photos because of such restrictions.   — Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me 21:07, 20 April 2018 (UTC)

— Speravir – 22:41, 20 April 2018 (UTC)

Is this source reliable?

Hello folks. I don't know where to discuss this issue but is this(http://www.edmaps.com/) source reliable? It looks like self-published and questionable. No source provided for the maps presented in this website and the self-published website looks like a collection of "maps" from the Internet fora. This makes the source shady and questionable which harms the reliability of this project. I would like to hear other editors' opinions on this. Thanks. 88.226.47.49 14:00, 18 April 2018 (UTC)

Here on Wikimedia Commons we don't directly concern ourselves with whether sources are reliable, as long as our media are free and educationally useful. With a quick search, I only found three maps from edmaps.com, all of them historical: File:Map of Assyria Paris Peace Conference 1919.jpg, File:Italian East Africa map 1936.jpg, and File:Plan du siège de Louisbourg en 1758 avec positions des vaisseaux.jpg. All of these are currently in use on at least one Wikipedia, so I assume the respective Wikipedia communities have decided that they think the maps are useful (and adequately reliable). --bjh21 (talk) 14:31, 21 April 2018 (UTC)

How does wikimedia handle photographs of currency or of ration tickets? That's basically what this is. --Geographyinitiative (talk) 11:43, 20 April 2018 (UTC)
@Geographyinitiative: Commons:Currency#China. If you believe the images that can be seen on the ticket are more than 50 years old, click the "Nominate for deletion" link on the file page and argue your case. (it is currently nominated for speedy deletion) - Alexis Jazz 11:43, 21 April 2018 (UTC)

Best way to capture a photo from a copyright-free google/archive.org book

Hi. I'm looking for the best way to capture photos from books that have been scanned are available from google books or archives.org. All of these books are before 1923, so copyright has expired and are fully available on the sites. For example, I would like to upload this photo of Alice Hutchison (Page 163). Are there any tools to help? Thank you kindly. --Meanderingbartender (talk) 18:18, 20 April 2018 (UTC)

Extraction from Google Books is tricky. However you can find this book at https://archive.org/details/cihm_65037 where downloading pages is easy, they even give you download links. -- (talk) 18:26, 20 April 2018 (UTC)
Thanks for the suggestion. In this case, this book scan on Archives is horrendous. Would it be acceptable to do a screenshot from google books? Thank you kindly --Meanderingbartender (talk) 18:32, 20 April 2018 (UTC)
Hi, I can't see the content. It seems to be restricted to the US. But as long as it in the public domain, it is fine. You can upload it on Commons with {{PD-1923}} for a book first published in the US before 1923. Regards, Yann (talk) 19:13, 20 April 2018 (UTC)
Use w:en:Pdfimages. I got File:Alice Hutchison.jpg out of it. - Alexis Jazz 20:44, 20 April 2018 (UTC)
Many of the Google scans/books can be found on HathiTrust, like this one, and you can just directly download the page image, though not the whole PDF. They also often offer multiple scans, though in this case the other scan is just the microfilm one found on the Internet Archive.--Prosfilaes (talk) 22:58, 20 April 2018 (UTC)
@Prosfilaes: that site is also only available in the U.S., perhaps no problem for Meanderingbartender but just so you know. For the photo it doesn't matter, but I wonder if Eva Shaw McLaren is Eva McLaren. I can't find any death date or just anything about "Eva Shaw McLaren". - Alexis Jazz 23:15, 20 April 2018 (UTC)
HathiTrust isn't only available in the US, but I believe they block just about everything published less than 140 years ago from worldwide views; see Newly Opened Worldwide: 1-1-2018, where 21,661 out of 23,153 works were published in 1877. So more like Google Books that the Internet Archive.--Prosfilaes (talk) 01:58, 21 April 2018 (UTC)
Right, I should have been more clear: this specific book is only available in the US on that site. On closer inspection it seems their source for the book actually is the digitzed version from Google, so they possibly just copy the restrictions from Google. It looks like Eva McLaren is indeed the writer, which would mean this book is actually PD-old-80. - Alexis Jazz 03:34, 21 April 2018 (UTC)
The universities' contracts with Google permit them to host their own copy of the Google scans of books Google scanned from their collections on HathiTrust, as long as they keep any ability to download the whole book limited to their schools. I was under the impression that the Google PDF was going to be more highly compressed than the scans on HathiTrust, but it looks like, at least in this case, that wasn't true. They don't just copy Google's restrictions; their value in many cases is the fact that they make works that are PD-US but published after 1922 available, which Google doesn't. I think they spend much more time trying to establish freedom of works for the US (and their member universities) than they worry about outside the US.--Prosfilaes (talk) 20:11, 21 April 2018 (UTC)

Your web page.

I uploaded 97 photographs on Wikimedia Commons and I'd like to view them and possibly edit them, but I see no way to do it. Every time I use the search box to try to find the answer I get the same result "create a page on this wiki". How the heck do you do that and what is a wiki? And why don't you have a link that simply says view your uploads? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Johnckarnes (talk • contribs) 23:12, 20 April 2018 (UTC)

You have 1 photograph on Wikimedia Commons: Special:ListFiles/Johnckarnes. - Alexis Jazz 00:10, 21 April 2018 (UTC)
If images are deleted you usually get a note that gives the reason why an admin deleted it (though giving actual reasons is a courtesy) and if you contest this deletion there is a page for that at Commons:Undeletion requests because otherwise you won't be able to view them, note that actual copyright © violations won't get restored and are best uploaded to Wikipedia where fair use is allowed (please read Commons:Scope and Commons:Licensing). --Donald Trung 『徵國單』 (No Fake News 💬) (WikiProject Numismatics 💴) (Articles 📚) 06:20, 21 April 2018 (UTC)

Comment reviewing your upload log I can't seem to find any other uploads, I was going to write about how it was often possible for admins to speedy delete images without giving an actual reason like INeverCry did with always just writing "Copyright violation: See commons:licensing" and many immediate copyright © violations such as of non-simple logo's that are not Template:PD-ineligible but from what I can tell none of the images you uploaded were ever deleted, did you by any chance uploaded them with a different account? Because images uploaded with other accounts aren't visible in the upload log with this one. Maybe you uploaded them to a Wikipedia because those images also aren't visible on Wikimedia Commons. --Donald Trung 『徵國單』 (No Fake News 💬) (WikiProject Numismatics 💴) (Articles 📚) 06:25, 21 April 2018 (UTC)

I had already checked that. There is 1 photograph and that's it. Nothing deleted, nothing on other wikis. @Johnckarnes: either you uploaded the other photos using another account or you made a mistake during the upload. Maybe you can tell us what those photos were showing, filenames and descriptions. If we find one maybe we'll find the others. You can also just try to upload them again. If they are already here, you will be given the link. If not, proceed with the upload. - Alexis Jazz 10:18, 21 April 2018 (UTC)

old pictures

If I find and old (pre-1923 copyright era) picture on a State of Tennessee web site can I copy it and post it on Commons or is it covered by a copy right for the web site? Einar aka Carptrash (talk) 19:01, 21 April 2018 (UTC)

You ask a simple question to which only a very long answer can be given.. I'll try to keep it short.
  • The State of Tennessee may or may not be the author of the picture.
  • The picture may or may not have been published before 1923.
  • If the work is from another country, it may require its author to have kicked the bucket at least 70 years ago.
  • If it was never published before 2003 it may still be covered by copyright.
  • It may be a derivative work, for example: a photo of a painting that was made by a European painter who died less than 70 years ago.
  • If it's not within scope we don't want it.
Undoubtedly I am forgetting half a dozen of pitfalls. Try COM:HIRTLE for the US, Commons:Copyright rules by territory for other countries and for works from unknown authors outside the US COM:WORSTCASE. - Alexis Jazz 19:14, 21 April 2018 (UTC)
Thank you Alexis, I'll drag these answers back into my cave and mull them over. Thanks for your well though out and spelled out reply. Carptrash (talk) 19:30, 21 April 2018 (UTC)
User:Alexis Jazz: This grew out of a request I made for this painting ✓ Done, this picture, and this picture (taken from this list). Perhaps the painting could be uploaded but we're not sure about the pictures? We already have paintings by the same artist: Category:Washington B. Cooper. And if I can find pictures of the house and the planter on Newspapers.com, does the article have to date back to 1923, or do we need to know when the picture was taken? The house was demolished in the 1930s.Zigzig20s (talk) 19:36, 21 April 2018 (UTC)
Please ping me if/when you reply. Thank you.Zigzig20s (talk) 22:43, 21 April 2018 (UTC)
@Zigzig20s: No U.S. newspaper outside of New York City ever renewed copyrights when they expired after 28 years, which was required under the U.S. copyright law of that era. So if it was copyrighted by a U.S. newspaper before 1964, it is safe to use {{PD-US-not renewed}}. - Jmabel ! talk 23:17, 21 April 2018 (UTC)
You would be safe if you would find a publication before 1923 or (as Jmabel said) a publication before 1964 without notice/renewal. When the picture was taken doesn't really matter, publication date and death date of the author does. But unless you find that publication you couldn't possibly figure this out, uncovering a possibly much greater problem and something I have overseen. I will address this further at Commons:Village pump/Copyright#Publish date issues. @Zigzig20s: @Carptrash: please go there. To be clear: I hope I'm wrong about what I say there. - Alexis Jazz 23:28, 21 April 2018 (UTC)

sub-cat

Liebe Spezialisten, ich hatte gern in der Category:Möhrendorfer_Wasserschöpfräder eine Sub-Kategorie "Aufbau und Technik" für Bilder die ebendies beschreiben, unabhängig von bestimmten Rädern. Könnte mir bitte jemand so etwas korrekt einrichten? Danke, --Markus (talk) 21:51, 21 April 2018 (UTC)

  • I'm guessing that in this context "Aufbau und Technik" should be understood as "structure and technology", although it can also mean "construction and technology" if by "Aufbau" you mean the process of constructing, rather than the thing that results. I'm afraid my German isn't good enough to explain that in German -- I read a lot better than I write -- but I'm guessing someone can translate the prior sentence . - Jmabel ! talk 23:25, 21 April 2018 (UTC)
"Aufbau" means "the process of stitching the parts together", "Technik" means "technology/functionality/how it works" - but in the categoy picturess about "bulding parts" and "constructon of parts" are welcome too. Because people who work with "Möhendorfer Wasserräder" speak German, a German category will be ok (and better understandable than an English translation ;-) Bests, --Markus (talk) 23:47, 21 April 2018 (UTC)

  1. On the talk page of your photo, add and fill out {{Published}} with "legal=no" and a comment explaining.
  2. All Commons can do to help you in the legal matter is to explain how it is normal for you to proceed with such a problem: your copyright has been violated, not ours, so Commons has no legal standing in this matter. @SkyGazer 512: that is not an actual licence, so such images have to be treated on a case-by-case basis to determine exactly why they might qualify as PD. If you have a particulat example in mind, please post a link.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 01:07, 22 April 2018 (UTC)

Hallo!
Beispiel: Ich will aus Kategorie "Germany", "Bicycles in Germany" machen. Ich scheibe das B vor Germany und der Cursor springt ans Ende von Germany, so dass ich erst mit Maus oder Pfeiltasten zuück muss.

How to deal with widely used, misidentified plant image?

When I uploaded File:Musa textilis - Manila Hemp - desc-flower.jpg, I based the filename on the plant identification label I found in front of it at the Washington DC Botanical Garden. This was probably a mistake; I have since been informed that rather than w:Musa textilis, this is almost certainly w:Musa balbisiana. Unfortunately, this image has been widely used under the incorrect identification, including on various-language Wikipedias and the wider web. So far all I've done is changed the category and description, and I know the next step is asking a steward for a rename, but what are the next steps beyond that? Any and all advice welcome! (Preferably on File talk:Musa textilis - Manila Hemp - desc-flower.jpg to keep the discussion in one place.) -- Phyzome (talk) 14:06, 24 April 2018 (UTC)

@Phyzome: I can rename the image without replacement—under your responsibility—and then you’ll redirect the title to any image representing Musa textilis, at your discretion. Incnis Mrsi (talk) 14:14, 24 April 2018 (UTC)
@Incnis Mrsi: Thanks -- could you rename it to "Musa balbisiana - desc-flower.jpg"? (What do you mean by redirecting the title?) -- Phyzome (talk) 18:54, 24 April 2018 (UTC)
@Phyzome: he means: find image of an actual musa textilis and he will make any wiki using "Musa textilis - Manila Hemp - desc-flower.jpg" start showing that instead. Too late though: you replaced the redirect with text, breaking the image across wikis without triggering User:CommonsDelinker. Now User:Plantdrew has replaced the image (almost?) everywhere with File:AmCyc Manila Hemp.jpg. This looks accurate, but is a completely different kind of image so not really ideal. - Alexis Jazz 23:41, 24 April 2018 (UTC)

Some [of the pics I am interested in] are in the public domain and others are in Creative Commons. I want to use them with legal justification, so as not to run into problems. My questions is: How should I report the Source?

[IS] THIS THE CORRECT FORMAT: Photo: Wikipedia public domain Photo: Wikipedia Commons / Vicente Alcaraz

Is the correct procedure to include the name of the author of the photograph as shown above [for] Vicente Alcaraz[?] Is this the correct procedure or [if not] would you clarify how it is done[?] Thanks for the help and information. Regards, "Narciso Casas". <End of translation> Translated by: Mercy11 (talk) 03:11, 25 April 2018 (UTC)

@Casas Callado:

  • Copyrights are held by (typically) photographers, not by us. Wikipedia (vs. Wikimedia Commons) is not involved in any way. And crediting even Wikimedia Commons is not required, except that when the only identification of the photographer is "account-name on Wikimedia Commons, then you need it for context
  • "In Creative Commons" actually means several different licenses, which have their different requirements. You really should read the individual licenses, because some can be a bit tricky. The following is approximate, and should not be read as legal advice; in particular, some of the licenses may have numbered versions, with slightly different rules, and some other licenses I'm thinking of may also arise. The typical licenses here are:
    • CC-0: you can treat this like public domain.
    • CC-BY: you must credit the author; the individual photo may be specific as to the wording of that credit.
    • CC-BY-SA: you must credit the author and indicate the license. Any changes you make (e.g. if you clean up colors) must also be licensed as CC-BY-SA; and you must be clear about the terms of the license. On the copyrights page you should link https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/deed.es, https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0/deed.es, etc.
      • E.g. this photo that I took, licensed under CC-BY-SA 3.0, indicates to credit me as "Joe Mabel", not just my account name, so you'd credit as "Joe Mabel, CC-BY-SA 3.0". (If "Joe Mabel" weren't specified, and if this were CC-BY instead of you could just use "Wikimedia Commons/jmabel, CC-BY-SA 3.0".)
  • I hope that helps. Let me know if you need me to write this again in Spanish, or if you need more detail. I'm in a hurry right now, so I wrote in my native English. - Jmabel ! talk 07:06, 25 April 2018 (UTC)

cableway? cable car?

I don't understand what is the difference between "cableway" and "cable car", because I want to create "Views from cable cars" category. So my question is: Is this naming correct in the eyes of native English speakers?--Kai3952 (talk) 13:22, 20 April 2018 (UTC)

@Kai3952: en:Cable car is the vehicle itself, while en:Cableway is a redirect for a system of cables, motors, pulleys, and supports which make such vehicles move in the desired manner and support them. Views of or from cable cars will often include parts of the system. No, the real problem is that Wikimedia.Commons does not "Views from cable cars" category, because no one created it yet. Library Images With Text In Top Left And URL In Bottom Right

I own a library of unique photographs on a specialist niche subject, which I took during a major project. Each of these has the technical name of the item in text in the top left hand corner, and the URL of the published work in the bottom right hand corner. The question is, is this acceptable here, or would I have to edit/crop each image for upload? — Preceding unsigned comment was added by 2A00:23C4:9285:B300:B956:A09:AC3E:7E3 (talk) 09:58, 24 April 2018 (UTC)

But we prefer images with watermarks to no images at all, and if the crop will be "lossy" it may be worth uploading as they are, and then using CropTool to do your crop inside Commons, so that the fuller original is "recorded", even if you will then overwrite it with the cropped version. - Jmabel ! talk 16:33, 24 April 2018 (UTC)

Thanks again. Yes, I understand about the "nc" and "nd" restrictions: I am here to evaluate the effort should I upload and extend the license type. Looking at that template it does sound like many of the images can be cropped via parameters, rather than having to be manually cut/edited (which is good news of course). I also assume from this that if I simply uploaded asis the images might be removed. — Preceding unsigned comment was added by 2A00:23C4:9285:B300:811:45F7:4EC3:6EBB (talk) 12:07, 25 April 2018 (UTC)
It's hard to be certain about anything around here, but those images are clearly useful for an educational purpose even with the watermarks. I'd be quite surprised if any of them were deleted. Here are a couple of examples of similar watermarks that have survived deletion requests: File:Lunar Eclipse - April 4, 2015 from Melbourne (FL) (17028468841).jpg, File:Lunar Eclipse - April 4, 2015 from Melbourne (FL) (16410545874).jpg. If you upload the images with watermarks, it's quite likely that someone else will edit them to remove the watermarks eventually. --bjh21 (talk) 13:38, 25 April 2018 (UTC)
Thank you: that helps. I'll now discuss this with the publisher and go from there. Hopefully if I do upload, common sense will prevail, particularly given the safety orientation of the work. — Preceding unsigned comment was added by 2A00:23C4:9285:B300:D1D3:B82B:3C66:2099 (talk) 17:31, 26 April 2018 (UTC)

ウェブブラウザーはFirefox59.0.2(32bit)です。--Comyu (talk) 17:17, 25 April 2018 (UTC)

"千秋府" looks like it is in the middle of the road. Is it a "corner building"?

File:千秋府.jpg shows a Chinese temple, but I'm not sure if it is a "corner building". Because this temple looks like it is in the middle of the road.--Kai3952 (talk) 10:03, 25 April 2018 (UTC)

@Kai3952: One could say that it is on two corners.   — Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me 10:52, 25 April 2018 (UTC)
Temple built in the middle of the road, which is often seen in Taiwan. In this case, like a "refuge island" or a "roundabout", so I'm not sure if "corner building" is a suitable category. Do you mean to tell me that you think it is a "corner building"?--Kai3952 (talk) 12:40, 25 April 2018 (UTC)
Interestingly, there is no parent category for this on Category:Temple Bar Marker in London, either, which I was hoping to be able to use as a paradigm. - Jmabel ! talk 14:26, 25 April 2018 (UTC)
I think the important feature of a corner building is that it faces onto two roads, and the two faces are of roughly equal importance (e.g. File:5 Caibarienmusee.jpg). Alternatively, they might make a feature of being on a corner, with a tower or turret (e.g. File:Chippewa County Bank.jpg). By contrast, this temple clearly has a front (facing the pedestrian crossing) and a side (facing the road). So I would say that it isn't a corner building. Really, though, people creating categories like Category:Corner buildings should explain what they mean so we don't have to infer it from the category name and some examples. --bjh21 (talk) 16:25, 26 April 2018 (UTC)
It now appears that there is a new problem: How we should use "Category:Corner buildings"? Also, what do most people understand about the term "corner building"?--Kai3952 (talk) 20:41, 26 April 2018 (UTC)

Allegorical paintings

Dear Commons Help Desk, my name is Matthias Laurenz Gräff, and I am the painter of two allegorical paintings - File:Matthias Laurenz Gräff. "Trump. The Killing Machine".jpg and File:Matthias Laurenz Gräff, "Riot, Rock City (Allegorie auf H. C. Strache und das gleichnamige Musikalbum").jpg - which are based on Albumcovers, see (original here and original here). In the discussion about deleting this two images two people argue that my paintings are a copyright injury, derivative work (discussion see here Commons:Deletion requests/File:Matthias Laurenz Gräff._"Trump. The_Killing_Machine".jpg and Commons:Deletion requests/File:Matthias Laurenz Gräff, "Riot, Rock_City (Allegorie_auf H._C. Strache und das gleichnamige_Musikalbum").jpg). This is a misconception, because this painting fall under artistic freedom; its a seperate allegorical artwork with a different theme as the cover painting! Please help me if there is a opportunity to save both images on Commons! Kind regards! --Donald1972 (talk) 18:53, 26 April 2018 (UTC)

Riot, Rock City is a US work, and thus US rules are relevant here. w:Leibovitz v. Paramount Pictures Corp. and Dr. Seuss Enterprises v. Penguin Books USA seem to be relevant cases; the first distinguishes between two photographs based on minor, yet significant differences that these copies lack. The second states that taking from a preexisting work to comment on another subject is not parody.--Prosfilaes (talk) 04:50, 27 April 2018 (UTC)

Replacing old logo with new logo of institution

Is there any issue about uploading new logo since the previous logo 85% looks same. Just I updated the design and trying reupload — Preceding unsigned comment added by Avirvastkav (talk • contribs) 15:01, 28 April 2018 (UTC)

  • No one can give you a definitive answer without you being specific about what logo, but whatever you do please do use a different filename rather than overwrite the old logo. - Jmabel ! talk 15:30, 28 April 2018 (UTC)

Do you think the bus is an automobile?

Look at this edit. This looks like someone confused the term "bus" with "automobile." Do you think the bus is an automobile?--Kai3952 (talk) 19:54, 25 April 2018 (UTC)

May be. There is Category:Views from buses in Taiwan‎, which is part of Category:Views from automobiles in Taiwan‎. Ruslik (talk) 20:02, 25 April 2018 (UTC)
@Ruslik0: Can you please clarify what you mean by "which is part of Category:Views from automobiles in Taiwan‎"? Is it like this one: File:台中市 北區 Taichung City - panoramio.jpg, at the same time photographed a bus and an automobile?--Kai3952 (talk) 21:08, 25 April 2018 (UTC)
Buses are technically automobiles, along with trucks, vans, and cars like sedans and coupes - they are self moving under their own power without a horse or a cable system to help them. Old sets of words for automobiles include motor coaches and horseless carriages. Perhaps what you mean is Category:Views from cars in Taiwan‎. Not usually the best views, but...   — Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me 00:45, 26 April 2018 (UTC)
No, what I see from this edit is: "Category:Views from automobiles in Taiwan." Are you telling me that buses is part of automobiles, but the term "automobile" is not equal to "car"?--Kai3952 (talk) 02:48, 26 April 2018 (UTC)
In some crazy over-technical sense a bus is an automobile. So is a wind-up toy. No normal human ever uses the word that way. - Jmabel ! talk 06:15, 26 April 2018 (UTC)
en:Automobile agrees. --ghouston (talk) 06:17, 26 April 2018 (UTC)
Not that I call a bus an automobile, but stating that someone who does so is not normal...? Richard 06:21, 26 April 2018 (UTC)
I'm not meaning to suggest that they suffer from some sort of abnormality, but that this they are not being normal in their usage. Just like someone might insist on referring to a bumper car as a "motor vehicle". Technically they would be correct, but normally no one talking about "motor vehicles" is thinking of a bumper car. - Jmabel ! talk 07:22, 26 April 2018 (UTC)
@Richardw: I agree what you said, but the problem is from "this edit." As far as I know, User:Howard61313 is a user from Taiwan, because most Taiwanese speak "Standard Chinese" as their native language. Therefore, I read this article "zh:汽车," and "zh:汽车#分類" suggests that a bus is part of an automobile. It now appears that there is a new problem: Which one is correct, en:Car or zh:汽车?--Kai3952 (talk) 16:23, 26 April 2018 (UTC)
@Jmabel: What you said to me is "technically." I read this article "en:Car," but I didn't see the term "bus," and so far I still don't understand why you think a bus is part of an automobile. Do you use "this way" to speak the term automobile in English-speaking countries?--Kai3952 (talk) 16:23, 26 April 2018 (UTC)
  • We absolutely don't include buses, and that's why I said it's "not normal", and it certainly isn't how we should use it here. When I said it was technically true, I meant that if you go back to etymology and the definition when the term first arose, it simply meant a road vehicle that had an engine. But I think the use had come to exclude buses even before 1900! Just like when a person walks into a zoo they don't become in any relevant sense "an animal in a zoo" for the duration of their visit. - 22:00, 26 April 2018 (UTC)
See en:Etymological fallacy; the meaning and usage of a word often change over time, sometimes drastically, such that the surface sense of its roots or components can become more or less irrelevant to the current meaning.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 16:33, 29 April 2018 (UTC)
@Odysseus1479: No, I am not asking this question because I saw that he has confused the term "bus" with "automobile," but I don't know what to do about it. You can look at his edits that shows category be changed from "vehicles" to "automobiles."--Kai3952 (talk) 19:09, 29 April 2018 (UTC)
I fully agree with Jmabel that buses are not within the normal scope of automobiles; the vehicles cat was definitely more appropriate.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 19:21, 29 April 2018 (UTC)
