Help desk[edit]
Hi! I noticed your question on the help desk. As a general rule (very very general), everything made 1923 or later is protected by copyright. If you want to use something 1923+ you need to do some detective work. Is it US-American? Then: Who is the photographer? Federal gov? -> probably free. Local/state gov -> usually not free. Some private person? Check for two things: Has it been published? When? Died the author die? When? Is there a copyright notice? Did someone apply for (c)protection? Argh.... It's a ton to think about. There's a pretty good chart by someone called Hirtle you can have a look at: Com:HIRTLE. Can be helpful. And of course you can always ask @ Com:VPC about copyright. Thanks for asking before uploading! I rare treat for us, usually it's the other way around! Oh, everything YOU photograph is yours to relicense. Except 3d-art. Lol, it really is easy to get tangled up in this (c) mess. Hope to see you around! --Hedwig in Washington (mail?) 01:33, 6 November 2016 (UTC)
File:Brightly pigmented bacteria from African dust.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.
If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues. |
