Can someone take a look at this page, and the accompanying talk page. I proposed a rename, and the creator has then proposed another rename - resulting in some confusingly-labelled proposals as having two 'rename' templates on the same page is clearly not intended. It will probably take an admin to sort out the underlying mess, which is a continuation of the same from en.Wikipedia... AndyTheGrump (talk) 23:11, 29 September 2013 (UTC)

  • That's not true and it's not up to you to decide, what does the map adress according to you? the distribution of different brands of microwave popcorn worldwide? Though if that were the case you wouldn't be complaining at all. Czixhc (talk) 23:28, 30 September 2013 (UTC)

Pictures in mirror

These files have to be rotated around a vertical axis, but I don't know how and even not where to initiate. --Stunteltje (talk) 13:32, 1 October 2013 (UTC)

That seems more like a question for Commons:Graphic Lab/Photography workshop. You can pretty easily do it yourself in GIMP though. darkweasel94 13:58, 1 October 2013 (UTC)
I'd advise against using Gimp, as that will apply lossy compression. jpegtran -flip horizontal will perform the desired operation losslessly. LX (talk, contribs) 14:44, 1 October 2013 (UTC)
Good to know that this is one of the possible lossless operations, thanks for the information. Do we happen to have a bot similar to Rotatebot and Cropbot to do that? darkweasel94 14:52, 1 October 2013 (UTC)
I'm pretty sure we don't. I've flipped all the files listed above using exiftran, a tool similar to jpegtran. LX (talk, contribs) 16:34, 1 October 2013 (UTC)
Unfortunately it didn't work. Have a look at the images. They are still in mirror, nothing changed. Please read the names of the ships and other texts. --Stunteltje (talk) 18:42, 1 October 2013 (UTC)
It did work. Clear your browser cache or shift-reload. LX (talk, contribs) 21:15, 1 October 2013 (UTC)

It did, thank you very much. I don't see the result by clicking here on the file name, but when I magnify the image, I can see the result. --Stunteltje (talk) 06:31, 2 October 2013 (UTC)
What did Exiftran do? The name suggests that the program would change the EXIF orientation setting (for example, from 1 to 2), but the files do not seem to have any EXIF. --Stefan4 (talk) 21:09, 2 October 2013 (UTC)
They're both very similar tools for performing lossless transformations of JPEGs. I believe both of them are EXIF aware these days, but exiftran had it first. My choice of tool had more to do with what I happened to have on the computer I was using. LX (talk, contribs) 21:43, 2 October 2013 (UTC)

SVG imagen restriction in MediaWiki?

Hi. I´m from esWiki. I have translated this draw] into Spanish here. Well, there is some text in the original draw that is curved, so I erased it and make a new one usig the Inkscape tool called "Pattern along Path". In MediaWiki software, like here, I am not able to see the curved text; but when I open it with the browser I can see it. ¿It is a MediaWiki restriction? In this case ¿How can I make a curved text for MediaWiki Soft.? Thanks. Albertojuanse (talk) 22:06, 3 October 2013 (UTC)

MediaWiki SVG renderer does have certain limitations. Certain Inkscape features are known to cause compatibility problems. I believe the problem here is Help:Inkscape#Text along a curved arc which is not supported; the recommended work around is to convert the text to path. You can use Commons:SVG Check to confirm that the MediaWiki will be able to render the SVG correctly. MKFI (talk) 18:23, 5 October 2013 (UTC)
Thanks, I will try it. Regrets. Albertojuanse (talk) 18:58, 5 October 2013 (UTC)

Nachträgliche Kategorisierung der von mir hochgeladenen Bilder

Hallo, als wiki-Begeisterter habe ich mich vor einigen Tagen entschlossen, selbst einen bescheidenen Beitrag zu leisten. Also habe ich erstmalig Bilder hochgeladen. Leider habe ich die Kategorien vergessen und habe nicht herausgefunden, wie man mit den Denkmalcodes arbeitet. Kann mir bitte jemand mit einfachen Worten erklären was ich tun muss? I need your help. This is a slide which was made by Victor Drukar, a grand-son of Aleksander Drukar, a member of State Duma of the Russian Empire of the second convocation by my request. Victor visited the grave yard because I ask him to make this photo. But he have no time and skills to upload it by himself. What we could do? From my point of view it's clear that this is free copy but how we could approve it? Hunu (talk) 17:55, 1 October 2013 (UTC)

The best option would be for the photographer (Victor Drukar) to contact COM:OTRS by email, and confirm the license. They (Victor Drukar) must also choose a free license for the picture (for most circumstances a CC-BY-SA 3.0 license will be fine, that is the one I usually use). There is an email template here that would be suitable for them to use. I hope this helps. Liamdavies (talk) 18:29, 1 October 2013 (UTC)
Unfortunately, due to the absence of the freedom of panorama in Russia, the photo can not be uploaded to Commons. Try the Russian Wikipedia under fair-use provisions.--Ymblanter (talk) 06:29, 2 October 2013 (UTC)
I can see nothing copyrightable on this image. This is just an example of {{PD-text}}. It can uploaded on Commons. Ruslik (talk) 10:12, 2 October 2013 (UTC)
May be indeed one can claim it is PD-trivial or PD-text.--Ymblanter (talk) 10:17, 2 October 2013 (UTC)
Thank you very much for advices. Hunu (talk) 13:58, 2 October 2013 (UTC)
See also User talk:Stefan4#File:Drukar mogila.JPG. --Stefan4 (talk) 21:05, 2 October 2013 (UTC)
Sorry, there are two issues here. The first is how the file is licensed, the second is if we can legally host it (under any circumstances). I will deal with the second issue first. In Russia there is no Freedom of Panorama - you can not take a photo of a creative work and publish it without the creators permission. The point Ymblanter raised was if the headstone was creative or not, it is only that which we think is PD. The first point still stands, the photo must be legally licensed in a free license by the person who took the photo, you will need to follow the COM:OTRS procedure I outlined first, if you do not the photo will probably be deleted. Problems with the watchlist

Not sure if this is the right place for this inquiry. Please advise if not.

I have mainly use W Lite on my mobile and created a watchlist.

Have now logged on with my Mac to continue a study but my watchlist does not come up in the full version.

Is there a way to access or import it?

THANKS

I'm not sure what W Lite is. Neither Google nor a search on this site turned up any obvious results.
As long as you are signed into your account, you will be able to access your watchlist across different devices and browsers. If you don't, you may be signed in using a different user name or you may be on the wrong Wikimedia project. The site you're on right now is Wikimedia Commons. Your English Wikipedia watchlist is over there. LX (talk, contribs) 20:08, 2 October 2013 (UTC)

Please give me a concrete answer about how to credit a public domain wik images ..Do you mention wik at all? or just say PB or CC or GNU or sometimes they are both? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.204.128.196 (talk • contribs) 19:13, 2 October 2013‎ (UTC)

See Commons:Reusing content outside Wikimedia. Please note that a very large share of the images and other media hosted on Wikimedia Commons are not in the public domain. Content published under the Creative Commons Attribution license, Creative Commons Attribution Share-Alike license and GNU Free Documentation License, for example, are all protected by copyright. They are free to use for any purpose, but only if you abide by the licensing terms. In other words, you need to check the information on the file description pages and the terms of any relevant licenses. LX (talk, contribs) 19:59, 2 October 2013 (UTC)
If the file is public domain, you do not need to credit anything. darkweasel94 20:05, 2 October 2013 (UTC)
  • That is, there is no legal requirement to do so. But, in general, if the author is known, it is polite (and may be useful to scholars) to acknowledge it. Wikimedia, however, is never the author; look at the individual image page for that information. - Jmabel ! talk 16:06, 3 October 2013 (UTC)

Gilles-Eric Seralini

Hello, I recently uploaded a picture of Gilles-Eric Seralini. (file:Gilles-Eric Seralini.jpg)However, it has been stated that the image is missing author and source information, which doesn't really make sense to me given that I have filled out both the author and the source parameters. Can someone tell me what needs to be done? Jinkinson (talk) 15:13, 3 October 2013 (UTC)

  • Convenience link: File:Gilles-Eric Seralini.jpg. - Jmabel ! talk 16:07, 3 October 2013 (UTC)
  • 'Flickr' alone is never an adequate source. You need to link a particular page on Flickr as source.
  • I see that you've linked a Flickr page as "permission", but that page has an "Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivs 2.0 Generic" license. Neither non-commercial nor no-derivatives are acceptable for Commons. So we probably can't keep the image. The only way we can keep it is if they will either change the license on Flickr (nothing stricter than Attribution+Sharealike) or, equivalently, grant an acceptable license via the COM:OTRS process. I'd also point out that even if we allowed no-derivatives images, such a license would prevent anyone from cleaning up this underexposed and poorly cropped photo to make it look better for use in an article. - Jmabel ! talk 16:14, 3 October 2013 (UTC)

keeping my name in hebrew project and in english commons

my name in the hebrew wiktionary and in hebrew wikipedia is איתן פ by hebrew letters, and in commons my name is Eitan f. until recently there was no problem; i was kept loged in in the hebrew project by my hebrew name and kept loged in in commons by the english. i wish it would continue the same. for some time now, if i log in for the hebrew wiktionary using my hebrew name, i automatically loged out from commons, and if i log in to commons the name in the hebrew projects is changed to english which is like being another user there. must i suffer this? Eitan f (talk) 11:11, 4 October 2013 (UTC)

Short answer, yes, that is the way the unified login works, if you login to one project you login to all. The only work around I can think of is to use two different browsers for the two different login names, for example use firefox for commons name and chrome for the hebrew name. I hope this helps. Could you link to an example of what is "all mixed up"? Or are you just asking how to insert an image in an article? or what? (If it's easier for you to clarify in French, that would probably be OK, someone here will certainly be able to understand and answer.) Pronunciation of names of people: formats

Hello! I want to ask my students to create audio files with names of Russian scientists for this category: Category:Russian pronunciation of names of people.

I found several examples of formatting, e.g.: File:Francesco guccini pronunciation.ogg, File:Albert Einstein german.ogg, and File:Agniya L'vovna Barto.ru.vorb.oga. Could you give me a link to the best formatted example of an audio file with name, which could be used as an example or as a gold standard for my students? -- Andrew Krizhanovsky (talk) 07:35, 7 October 2013 (UTC)

For a fourth naming scheme cf. Commons:Pronunciation files requests#Naming the files, and the language code. Feel free to update this page; the fixed .ogg file extension is obsolete, for example as we now have wav and flac support. I always recommend the flac file format: It's compressed and it's lossless. -- Rillke(q?) 16:39, 7 October 2013 (UTC)
Thank you for the reply.
.flac - is an interesting idea. I tested it and created the audio file for the article en:George Koval. But I have a problem:
  • if you are using .ogg file (see first line in en:Agniya Barto) then this file could be played by Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox.
  • if you are using .flac file (see my edit [2]) then Chrome and Firefox suggest to user to download this file and they cannot to play this .FLAC file online :( -- Andrew Krizhanovsky (talk) 16:42, 9 October 2013 (UTC)

I want to upload the logo of my company. Please suggest what tag should I add in description?--Challengethelimits (talk) 11:51, 7 October 2013 (UTC)

That really depends on what the logo is, where it's from, and what its existing license is. We can only host files with free licenses here, it may be the case that the logo is too simple to pass COM:TOO, in which case it would be PD, or it may be licensed under a CC license. Under both these circumstances we could host it, but if it has a all rights reserved copyright, we can't. To get a full answer you need to answer the following questions: What company is the logo for (ie, link to the logo)? What country does the company operate in? What license does it currently have? And, are you able to have the logo licensed under a free license? Liamdavies (talk) 12:15, 7 October 2013 (UTC)
Thank you Liamdavies. The logo is available at [www.notionpress.com]. It hasn't been registered yet. Is this good enough?--Challengethelimits (talk) 12:20, 7 October 2013 (UTC)
I'm assuming that this is the logo in question. In the USA that would clearly be ineligible for copyright, as it is far too basic in design. However, as the company is located in India it must fall below the Indian threshold of originality as well, it is on this point that I am unsure. We have nothing written on the Indian application, but en:File:GQ India logo.png is marked as "Do not copy this file to Wikimedia Commons." This leads me to believe that we probably can't host the image, and it should instead be uploaded to local wikis as either fair use, or PD. For a more authoritative discussion I suggest posting this to Commons:Village pump/Copyright‎. Hope this helps. Liamdavies (talk) 12:51, 7 October 2013 (UTC)

Out of scope?

Is simple logos from fictionelle non-notable companies (from Grand Theft Auto) out of scope? I am talking about MS PARAMEDIC.jpg, 16 logo prolaps.jpg, 16 logo zip.jpg, Twenty-four-seven.jpg, Liberty city license plate.png, Liberty city license plate.jpg and Samp.png (logo to a well-known GTA SA-software made by fans and supported by Rockstar. The picture is based at the GTA-logo that got deleted because of copyright) and Taxifare.jpg and Taxifare3.jpg who are taxifares from gta iv. Maybe should we nominate them to deletion? --188.176.236.246 13:58, 7 October 2013 (UTC)

Convenience links:
Files which are legitimately tagged as public domain or correctly licensed and which are legitimately in use are not outside of Commons' project scope. If, for example, the graphics at the top of File:Liberty city license plate.png come from a non-free source, that would be grounds for deletion. If, for example, File:MS PARAMEDIC.jpg is removed from ja:リバティーシティ or that article is deleted through consensus on that project, it may be outside of our project scope. Files that are used on a Wikimedia project are unlikely to be deleted for reasons other than copyright reasons. LX (talk, contribs) 10:53, 8 October 2013 (UTC)

Can I add a photo that gives "permission" but not specifically

So I would like to add this picture of R.J. Reynolds, Jr. to his Wikipedia page. Now I don't own this picture/website but underneath the picture it says "PATRICK REYNOLDS COLLECTION No permission required" -- does that mean I can upload it to the Commons, or is this still a no go?

Thanks :) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Weybex (talk • contribs)

  • I suspect it will need a bit more research. Just saying "No permission required" doesn't make it clear on what basis. Public domain? Someone having granted a broad license? If the latter, does that license require attribution (e.g., as attributed on the website you link, "Patrick Reynolds collection"), and is it clear on what basis Patrick Reynolds holds the rights? It would be a lot safer to follow up the contact info on the site & try to get a clear COM:OTRS. If you do that, you might avoid repetition by trying to get one at a single time for all of the photos on this page that are attributed as "Patrick Reynolds collection". - Jmabel ! talk 23:58, 8 October 2013 (UTC)

The book by Russian constitutional democrats published in Paris , 1929

This book titled "Pamyati pogibshikh" (For the memory of the executed) was published [3] by Astrov, N. I., Zeeler, Vladimir Feofilovich, Miliukov, P. N.; Obolenskii, V. A. in Paris in 1929. On the site of American Libraries it is marked as 'NOT_IN_COPYRIGHT' Could anybody tell me what are acceptable templates for illustrations from the book? Hunu (talk) 13:35, 9 October 2013 (UTC)

I don't see any evidence that it's out of copyright anywhere that respects international copyrights. It was published in France (life + 70) with Zeeler, Vladimir Feofilovich, 1874-1954, as an author and it was published after 1922, so it's not out of copyright in the US. Canada and other life+50 nations in a couple years, but not in the US and France until 2025.--Prosfilaes (talk) 21:20, 9 October 2013 (UTC)
Why is a pdf file of the book published by American Library on the American site with the note 'NOT_IN_COPYRIGHT'? Hunu (talk) 11:13, 10 October 2013 (UTC)
I don't know. Even if it's correct for some reason, it still doesn't necessarily mean that illustrations from that book are acceptable for Commons, since we require them to be out of copyright in their home nation, too.--Prosfilaes (talk) 08:44, 11 October 2013 (UTC)

No. See Commons:Screenshots and Commons:Licensing#Acceptable licenses. Since the software is not under a free license, you'd need to get the copyright holder(s) to agree to publish a specific screenshot under a free license. Alternatively, you may be able to upload it under a fair use rationale to the English Wikipedia; check the rules on that project for details on that potential option. • In one place you say, "Welche Nutzungsrechte der TÜV am Bild hat, kann ich nicht beurteilen" and then elsewhere you quote them saying, "Wir besitzen sämtliche Rechte auf das von uns gewünschte Porträtphoto von Dr. Haas." Unless you have reason to doubt them, that would seem to be an assertion that they hold the relevant rights. Or am I missing something?
  • This looks like sufficient permission, and {{Bild-CC-by-sa/3.0}} is appropriate. As explained at COM:OTRS/de, you should forward the email to permissions-commons-de@wikimedia.org. It would have been best if they sent it there themselves, but since they already sent it to you you can forward, and cc the original sender to show that you are making them aware of the forwarding.)

How to add your creative commons photo to a wiki page?

I really need help I'm trying to add a photo to the kings island and Miami valley railroad page and don't have a clue on how to do it with my photos. — Preceding unsigned comment added by CP&LERR Fan (talk • contribs)

  • In your topic, where you say "creative commons" I assume you mean Wikimedia Commons (this site). Creative Commons is an organization best known for a number of licenses it created; we use those licenses here, but the organization is unrelated. In particular, I'm guessing you are referring to this image and possibly other photos. Also, when you say "the kings island and Miami valley railroad page" I'm guessing you mean en:Kings Island & Miami Valley Railroad on the English-language Wikipedia. If I am misunderstanding any of that, then the answer I'm about to give may not be correct, and then please clarify your question.
  • en:Wikipedia:Picture tutorial will probably tell you everything you need to know; most likely you will want to do something like [[File:Inside the cab of Lew Brown at Kings Island & Miami Valley railroad.jpg|thumb|(whatever you want as a caption)]] but it would be different if, for example, you want to reference it as a field in a template. - Jmabel ! talk 23:43, 11 October 2013 (UTC)

As explained on meta:Help:Watching pages, the watchlist does not show any activity older than 30 days. Mine goes back less than 10 days, presumably because I have well over 30,000 pages on there, unless I filter it by a specific namespace. LX (talk, contribs) 15:31, 12 October 2013 (UTC)
Oh no.. but then how can one attend changes in their watchlist that go back deeper in time than that preiod...? I do actually tag the "show all" option. I'd love to have an idea Orrlingtalk 18:28, 12 October 2013 (UTC)
There's not much you can do about changes that are already past the 30-day limit. If you'd like to keep a longer history from this point on, you could use the Atom feed version of your watchlist and read it into an RSS reader configured not to purge old entries. LX (talk, contribs) 09:42, 13 October 2013 (UTC)
Is it known whether the actual watchlist is the only environment where I can see the unattended changes in "bold"? or, say, I may open my full list of watched items (which is available) and some of the items would pop-up in some way? Thanks Orrlingtalk 11:10, 13 October 2013 (UTC)

Permission to use someone else's picture

Hello! I have two images that I've tried to upload for an article. They have not been officially published yet because I've only ever used them in the editing process in the sandbox. However, they were both taken down. I can easily get permission to use these images from the photographer. How do I show proof of this permission so that I can upload and use these pictures for the article? Or what information do I need to get from the owner of these pictures to fill out the correct upload form?

Your help would be greatly appreciated!!!

Thank you!!

Follow the the instructions at Commons:OTRS. Note that permission to use the photos for a specific article is not sufficient for them to be hosted here on Commons; they need to be published under a free license that allows anyone to use them in modified or unmodified form for any purpose, including commercial purposes.

  • If I understand correctly: you can add a new category and place it in an appropriate spot in the category tree. You put a category in a category exactly the same way you put an image in a category. - Jmabel ! talk 15:51, 15 October 2013 (UTC)

Password Email

I am trying to unify my accounts but the password reset email never comes. I've checked spam and all folders. I worry that I may have used a deactivated college email account to set up my commons account. How can I fix this? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 184.56.247.253 (talk • contribs) 01:19, 15 October 2013‎ (UTC)

The problem is I don't know the current password, that's why I'm trying the password reset mail.
  • Ah, sorry I thought the question was just about how to unify accounts. I could be mistaken, but if you've forgotten the password and no longer have access to the email address to which the password would be sent, I'm unaware of any way to get the account back. If someone here knows something I don't know about this, please weigh in. - Jmabel ! talk 04:01, 15 October 2013 (UTC)
  • en:Help:Logging_in#What_if_I_forget_the_password.3F is not encouraging, but you should read it for the course of action it suggests (new account, redirect the old user page). - Jmabel ! talk 04:04, 15 October 2013 (UTC)
One potential option not mentioned there is usurpation. If the account has not been used to make any edits to Commons, or if you can somehow prove that the account is yours (which will be difficult if you are unable to log into it), you may be able to usurp your own account. If you have an alternative to File:Harley Jane Kozak.jpg created by an author willing to publish the photo under a license that allows anyone to use it for any purpose, including commercial purposes, in modified or unmodified form, feel free to upload it. As for replacing the existing photo, we generally don't delete freely licensed photos of public figures taken in a public place simply because the subject doesn't like the photo, we don't dictate to other Wikimedia projects (in this case, the English, French, German, Russian, Spanish and Vietnamese Wikipedia projects) which photo or which combination of photos to use, and they don't allow people with a conflict of interest to dictate what photos and which information appears in their articles.
Also, please don't blank out categories from gallery pages like you did here. All gallery pages should be categorized. LX (talk, contribs) 06:14, 16 October 2013 (UTC)

Using an CC-BY image on my website

Hi, I'd like to use an image from here that is licensed as CC-BY (Attribution only). I'll be using the image as the background for a website. What are the appropriate requirements for attribution? Could someone guide me in the right direction? --74.202.39.3 22:12, 15 October 2013 (UTC)

  • Background image is tricky, because it is hard to say where to put the attribution. I suppose you could do it at the bottom of each page, but if you can track down the original author you might do better to try to come to a private arrangement instead of using a general public license. - Jmabel ! talk 00:31, 16 October 2013 (UTC)
  • The attribution requirements is a bit ambiguous in CC BY 3.0 ("The credit required by this Section 4 (b) may be implemented in any reasonable manner"); but clarified in 4.0 draft ("You may satisfy the conditions in (Section 3a1) above in any reasonable manner based on the medium, means, and context in which the Licensed Material is Shared. For example, it may be reasonable to satisfy the conditions by providing a URI or hyperlink to a resource that includes the required information."). So I think you can use a CC BY work as background by providing all the "credit information" on a separate page and give a visible link of it on every other web pages. Eg: "Common Lime Butterfly (Papilio demoleus) © 2010 Jeevan Jose, Kerala, India used under a Creative Commons Attribution license: http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/ or simply Common Lime Butterfly (Papilio demoleus) on your "credit.html" page. (See; we are not giving any credit on the pages where we used our works in our projects; only giving a hyperlink to the file page.) JKadavoor Jee 06:31, 17 October 2013 (UTC)

Is this a proper contribution?

Honestly I’d like to hear if this upload was done correctly license-wise. Those of you into the copyrights-thing now have a chance to make it clearer for me as to the general attitude preferably employed down here in relation to media whose uploader has received them from a third party with a full good–faith–albeit–informal authorization for wiki use and all that, it’s got to be boringly tricky sometimes. Tell me fearlessly if I need to ask for the deletion of that file. Thankz Orrlingtalk 20:27, 16 October 2013 (UTC)

Language caption problem

I've recently noticed that adding a new language caption, such as Russian, to File:Chen Rong - Nine Dragons.jpg corrupts the input for the associated paramater. gfdg

Guyz. I'm trying to figure, still since about last week, how to retain and view changes recorded in items in my "Watch list" over the course of the previous months when I wasn't logged-in and haven't been exposed to ongoing processes in these entries. I was attempting to ask that question earlier on this board but it somehow sank gaining no attention, surprising as usually technic admins do assist here for the Commons sake. I was and still am wondering if there's no way, developer-wise or other, that the missed entries be on anywhere available for me – like, I know how to access my plain to-watch list (with 2,235 pages) but obviously no item there will pop-up in "bold" right now. And this is exactly what is needed. There's namely load of stuff awaiting me from throughout 6 months that I was editing away from my usernamespace - from April until a week ago - unaware that I'd eventually miss possible progressions in my axes of activity for good. it'll be more than fair to thus tell in which environment (other than the short-lived updating watchlist) old unvisited modifications can be kept and displayed. Thanks a lot. Orrlingtalk 01:59, 19 October 2013 (UTC)

Arrg, that'd be too much work. :-( I would think that this 30-days-back limitation is unjustified and somewhat wrongdoing for editors who leave their username space for a while longer than a month. Thanx for the answer. Orrlingtalk 22:15, 19 October 2013 (UTC)

Cornish churches

Hi. I have found seven images on Cornish Wikipedia in this category and I think they are fine to move to Commons. I know how to move them over, however, I am not sure which license and templates to use. Permission was originally given by the image creator here. Is there a special template to store this permission email? Thanks. Delsion23 (talk) 11:48, 21 October 2013 (UTC)

Hi, sorry but that letter is insufficient as it doesn't provide for the full reuse that we need to be able to host files. Please look over COM:LICENSE to see what we require, but in a nutshell, all files must be free to: reuse, including for for-profit commercial work; and modify for other usages. The letter you have received doesn't offer those reuse permissions. To be hosted here you need to get the copyright holder to release the images under a free license, this could be done by them directly uploading them, putting a notice on their website, or through the COM:OTRS process. I hope this helps, if you have any more questions, don't hesitate to ask. Liamdavies (talk) 13:25, 21 October 2013 (UTC)
No worries, the email was actually received by whoever uploaded the images to Cornish Wikipedia eight years ago. I was just wondering if the email from 2005 passed the criteria. Thanks for the advice. Delsion23 (talk) 15:20, 21 October 2013 (UTC)

Hey there - we basically assembled here a while ago to get remedy for the strangly lost content of a page that had been written and used to suggest the scheme for the elaborate "Dead men/women" tree discussed recently. This is the post I published here, I guess the thing was not fully solved - as the content of that page, to whose history I even can't access, is somehow still unavailable; now after these months as I'd like to fix the tree it's needed that I be referred to where this important page has been relocated. It could be some administrative puzzle but equally this might be a mere technical flop, thus I'm giving it a try here for any result. Thanqz! Orrlingtalk 06:13, 21 October 2013 (UTC)

Guys - some one has now suggested on the AN that the page has actually been deleted - if this is true please restore its content asap either as a copy into another subpage or in the same location, as it depicts the categorization scheme to follow and this page was the only one to contain that specific structure. Thanx Orrlingtalk 07:35, 21 October 2013 (UTC)
Category talk:Deceased people by country wasn't "strangly lost" (sic) or relocated; it was deleted as it clearly states in the big pink box that you see when clicking that link. You've been here long enough to know how to read a deletion log, and you know full well that non-admins cannot see the history of deleted pages. You also know better than to ask for undeletion at the help desk and to forum shop. Please don't play dumb, as with your record, there is going to be very limited tolerance for that sort of trolling. LX (talk, contribs) 08:16, 21 October 2013 (UTC)

Guyz. more than a couple of hours on, this thread is somehow still not solved. We have this issue now running actually since about 3 months ago, when it was found that the new workpage with categorization chart for the 'Dead-by-country' branch in it had been either moved or wiped out unexplainably, now it was said at the other forum that the page was deleted – of no reason; this should end in a technic admin extracting the content now - if technically possible - as it's irreasinable to evaporate an active page, and circling aroung when the content is still inaccessible plays no role for the category tree, currently being incomplete. Nothing can actually explain that the lost content didn't get retrieved back right following the initial note here in July. The category namely awaits progressing on it, and by viewing that page we'll all see that its deletion was probably some mistake. I had this one requested on the AN earlier too, however I didn't see any concrete reference to the restored content yet. What is missed? Orrlingtalk 14:04, 21 October 2013 (UTC)

Your question has been answered and you have been told what to do from here, this matter is resolved. Liamdavies (talk) 14:12, 21 October 2013 (UTC)
Thanks. I'll use the Undelete feature. well, kinda rare that I ever need to come across that feature, and indeed not making sense to me that an active arena was possibly deleted. Orrlingtalk 14:21, 21 October 2013 (UTC)
Orrling, if you want the talk page of this deleted category undeleted and moved into your personal space here on Commons, that should certainly be uncontroversial; just let me know. - Jmabel ! talk 15:43, 21 October 2013 (UTC)
This is still beyond my understanding that a maintained process-page got completely off-the-media suddenly with no copy of its content left anywhere, and that I need to run after it months after already giving the note regarding it on both fora. Call it my personal space, any destination where editors can follow and participate is fine of course. Thanks Orrlingtalk 17:18, 21 October 2013 (UTC)

Could someone tell me if it is OK to use images from Wikimedia, provided I acknowledge and credit the licensee, which I would be more than happy to do?From what I've read it seems I can - the only alterations I am likely to do are to crop some images. Many thanks Steve Hounsome — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2.101.161.12 (talk • contribs) 08:32, 24 October 2013‎ (UTC)

Assuming that the files are correctly licensed (although we remove copyright violations on sight, we don't review every file and cannot guarantee that people don't upload copyright violations), all files are free to use for any purpose, provided that you follow all licensing requirements. That's great, many thanks for the help. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2.101.161.12 (talk • contribs) 11:58, 24 October 2013‎ (UTC)

Category:Vasiliy Orlov-Denisov – what’s the problem?

Hello, colleagues!

I have encountered with a thing obscure for me.

When I try to enter Category:Vasiliy Orlov-Denisov I get the redirection to http://wikimediafoundation.org/wiki/Category:Vasiliy_Orlov-Denisov, where I can read the message: “There is currently no text in this page. You can search for this page title in other pages, or search the related logs, but you do not have permission to create this page. This category currently contains no pages or media.”

I am rediricted when I try to enter the category from its parent category (Category:House of Orlov-DenisovCategory:Vasiliy Orlov-Denisov), as well when I try to enter it from the Russian Wikipedia (from the page Орлов-Денисов, Василий Васильевич).

What’s the problem with access to the category? Is it my, local, problem or is it a problem of Commons?

...And, the message “This category currently contains no pages or media”... I get it, but when I am in the parent category I see the indication “Category:Vasiliy Orlov-Denisov contains 2 files”...

Text Family in Edit Box

I have a problem on Commons, I want to have the typical "Courier" font in the edit box, but the font is Arial (as everywhere on Commons, where it's okay). A "textarea {font-family: Courier;}" in my vector.css doesn't work. Who can help? Thanks in advance, Yellowcard (talk) 20:31, 26 October 2013 (UTC)

PS: With the exact same vector.css on de.wikipedia and on Commons I get different results. Anyone knows how come? Thanks again, Yellowcard (talk) 20:33, 26 October 2013 (UTC)
Well, my guess is that some CSS rule has a higher order of specificity. Since it is your explicit desire having the edit box in Courier and not just a monospace font, you can use
#wpTextbox1 {
    font-family: Courier !important;
}
in your vector.css if you're using the vector skin or the common.css for all skins. If you want all textareas using the Courier font, put
textarea {
    font-family: Courier !important;
}
into your personal CSS. However, note that there is a preference under Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-editing (section Editor) that is called Edit area font style: where monospace along with ⧼editfont-default⧽ is offered. Also note that using !important in code you write for third parties is usually not welcome but here, using it is perfectly justified. Best -- Rillke(q?) 13:20, 27 October 2013 (UTC)
Hey Rillke, thanks a lot for your answer. The point that I have been looking for was the setting Edit area font style:. Changing this back made me able to use my old CSS again. Thanks again, you helped a lot. Viele Grüße, Yellowcard (talk) 15:57, 27 October 2013 (UTC)

Overwrite existing graphic with a revised one

I made subtle changes to this file and wanted to overwrite it. As my account is too new to do so, an error message informed me to "go back and upload the file under a new name. Once you've done that, you can ask someone at the Help desk to move your file to the name you want.". Therefore, I'd like to ask someone to move the new version onto the old one as a new revision. The changes feature some more padding, a grammar and a logical mistake fixed (successful and wait one time slot) as well as a workaround for displaying in some webkit-based browsers. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Onse (talk • contribs)

Copyright help regarding File:Logo Gide Loyrette Nouel.jpg

--Constance1969 (talk) 10:32, 22 October 2013 (UTC) Hello, I would like to add the new logo of the firm Gide Loyrette Nouel on his english page. But Wikipedia says I didn't do it well because of the copyright status. And I don't understand what I have to do. I am lost ! Please help me. --Constance1969 (talk) 10:32, 22 October 2013 (UTC)

  • You didn't include a licensing template. In this case it is {{PD-ineligible}}. By the way, (1) you claim to be the author of the logo, which seems unlikely; please credit it to the correct individual or business, or say "unknown". (2) It would be useful to add other relevant categories. It must be the logo of something, and categories indicating the nature of the firm would be helpful. - Jmabel ! talk 15:40, 22 October 2013 (UTC)

Official White House Photo of JFK

This probably depends on which country you are publishing the photo in. --Stefan4 (talk) 21:09, 21 October 2013 (UTC)

  • Presuming the photo is public domain (most work of the federal government is), there is no legal requirement to credit it, but it is usually considered appropriate to indicate, just so no one is left wondering. - Jmabel ! talk 15:34, 22 October 2013 (UTC)

There is a legal requirement in some cases; Title 17, Chapter 4, Section 403 can negate the effect of a copyright notice on the work unless the government work is properly identified.--Prosfilaes (talk) 16:30, 24 October 2013 (UTC)

Copyright help regarding File:John Holt (educator).jpg

Hello. How I can use this image on John Holt's article in the Russian-language Wikipedia and make sure it won't be deleted because of the copyright infringement? https://ru.wikipedia.org/wiki/%D0%A5%D0%BE%D0%BB%D1%82,_%D0%94%D0%B6%D0%BE%D0%BD

Thank you.

--ElenaSukhaya (talk) 16:47, 24 October 2013 (UTC)

The image should not be on Commons as it violates copyright. See COM:NETCOPYRIGHT. --Stefan4 (talk) 16:49, 24 October 2013 (UTC)

It is being used on John Holt's English-language article. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Holt_(educator)

--ElenaSukhaya (talk) 16:59, 24 October 2013 (UTC)

This is because English Wikipedia has a policy, w:WP:NFCC, which sometimes permits non-free images. Russian Wikipedia also has a policy which permits some non-free images, ru:ВП:КДИ, but I don't know what the policy says or when non-free images are permitted. --Stefan4 (talk) 17:03, 24 October 2013 (UTC)

ru:ВП:КДИ is a Russian translation of w:WP:NFCC. --ElenaSukhaya (talk) 17:26, 24 October 2013 (UTC)

Then you need to write a fair-use rationale.--Ymblanter (talk) 18:36, 24 October 2013 (UTC)

Do I write a fair-use rationale as part of the file uploading procedure or is this rationale part of an article? In which language shall I write it? In fact, I did use a fair-use rationale template while uploading Mr. Holt's photo and filled in the requested fields, but the file has been deleted none the less. --ElenaSukhaya (talk) 20:18, 24 October 2013 (UTC)

It should be a part of the uploading procedure. If I get you correctly, and the file was deleted on the Russian Wikipedia, then may be you should contact directly the deleting administrator, they should normally help.--Ymblanter (talk) 20:21, 24 October 2013 (UTC)
May be just to keep it clear: The file can not be uploaded on Commons, but it can be uploaded on the Russian Wikipedia provided the fair use rationale (критерии добросовестного использования) has been added. It should obviously be added in Russian.--Ymblanter (talk) 20:23, 24 October 2013 (UTC)

Thank you for clarifying this. I will try to do as you suggest. --ElenaSukhaya (talk) 14:31, 25 October 2013 (UTC)

Tell Bot to stop replacements at Category:Ships by location

Hey! :} Can someone please stop the new bot that appears to be demonstrating its bugs today with rigor and grace in several categories of Category:Ships by location (incl that one itself) where I repeatedly need to undo him on these specific ones (- pls see my contribs with "Undo Hazard-Bot" summaries) since he seems to just not know when to stop... All in all I'm very satisfied with the replacement activity but here we witness that small areas may need to be polished. I realized it's pointless to run after the bot and undo the redundant edits in the Ships because he interpretes this as if his work is still not done :P therefore a human intervention is needed. Problems with display of updated image version

I just updated this image but the new version is neither displayed on its “homepage(also not in the versions list) nor in the respective de:wikipedia article. Surprisingly, in my uploads list it is displayed correctly. It is not the first time I’m encountering that problem. It has already appeared when I tried to update this image (see page history). In both cases the name of the uploaded file and the name of the file on Commons were not identical. Could this be the reason? And how to fix it? --6r3tar550n (talk) 16:55, 30 October 2013 (UTC)

Update: Now at least the correct version appears in the respective line of the versions list. Also, the correct version is downloaded by clicking on the large thumb (showing the old version!) at the top of its “homepage”. No changes at German Wikipedia. --6r3tar550n (talk) 18:03, 30 October 2013 (UTC)

Probably generation of new thumbs is delayed. You need only to wait some time. Ruslik (talk) 18:25, 30 October 2013 (UTC)
May well be. By clicking through the different thumbnail sizes on the image’s page, all links lead to the updated image version - with exception of the 473 × 600 px link. Unfortunately, the 473 × 600 size is the one displayed by default on the image’s page and is (as it seems) the one from which the thumbs on the WP pages are derived. If your assumption is right, I only need to wait til the 473 × 600 px is updated. However, I wonder why - in cases I upload updated files whose file name is identical to the file name on Commons - the new thumb(s) is/are created within seconds, and also, why the most important thumb size is not created first (as it seems)... --6r3tar550n (talk) 19:11, 30 October 2013 (UTC)
Update - @ Ruslik: OK, apparently you were right! The 473 × 600 px thumb now corresponds to the current version of the image. The image in the de:WP article (300 px wide) has not been updated yet, but this is solved by choosing a slightly different width.

Where I can get some java-scripts to help my working

Are there some java-scripts with that I can easily mark picture as copyvio and script ask web-address to picture that can be founded with google.--Motopark (talk) 13:04, 26 October 2013 (UTC)

Of course there is but be careful only marking clear copyright violations as such. The gadget is named QuickDelete. It adds a link "report copyright violation", "no permission" and "no source" to the toolbox. If you are using <IE 8 it is likely that some JavaScript is broken at Commons, otherwise don't worry and Activate the QuickDelete gadget now!. If this doesn't work, go to Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-gadgets and activate it there. -- Rillke(q?) 13:03, 27 October 2013 (UTC)

Is there a way to mark a page as a "favorite" or save it? Is it the watchlist?

I tried using the watchlist to save pages but Im a little confused on how it works. I'd like to be able to see the images (that is what I am searching and saving) all together. Im either not sure how to use it or there's a better way to go about it. I would like to stay in Wikimedia rather than save as a general favorite to browser because I switch between 3 browsers. Any advice for a newbie? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Lily323 (talk • contribs)

Copyright help regarding File:BirgitStauber 2013.jpg

Hi Wikimedia Commons! I´m the actress Birgit Stauber and I have the rights for a picture of me, that the photographer Steffi Henn took from me last two weeks ago. I do not know, which TAG I have to chose for the licensing. The picture is also published on IMDB, E-TALENTA, FILMMAKERS and CREW-UNITED. Thanx for your help, Best regards, Birgit Stauber --Meri13 (talk) 15:51, 28 October 2013 (UTC)

Birgit, 2 things we need:
  1. We need to know what license you are offering (e.g. {{CC-BY-SA}}, {{CC-zero}}, etc.)
  2. Precisely because the image has been published elsewhere, we need you to send an email as explained at COM:OTRS (or if you prefer the German-language version, COM:OTRS/de). - Jmabel ! talk 00:14, 29 October 2013 (UTC)

LOGOS Copyright

Hi, just wanted to ask for the licences and copyrights of company's logos. Some days ago I uploaded the official logo of MathWorks, and it probably will be deleted for licence violation. I'm al little bit confused with logos imatges.. does this Hewlett Packard (link below) logo not violate any copyright? If not, why not in this case?

Thank you, looking forward to your answer! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Littlecadell (talk • contribs)

  • Hi, there are a couple of issues here. The first is your upload, you uploaded a photograph that is under copyright, unless you took it and release it under a free license we cannot legally host it and must delete it. The second issues relates to logos, here it gets a little tricky. Different nations have different interpretations of what can be copyrighted, essentially how 'unique' something may is, we refer to this as the 'threshold of originality', and logos such as the one you highlighted are deemed to be too simple to be copyrighted. You can read more about this at COM:TOO (although the image you linked to is hosted on EN:WP, not here at Commons). There is another consideration, and that is fair-use, which we don't have here at Commons, but some local wikipedias do, the EN policy is at en:Wikipedia:Non-free content, but I doubt the photo you uploaded would pass. I hope this clarifies things. Liamdavies (talk) 17:01, 29 October 2013 (UTC)

verifiability? or what?

What is the verifiability policy (or anything wikipedia-like) for loaded to Commons self-made files, i.e. all sorts of diagrams (maps, plans, bar charts, technical drawings and so on) informative graphics, etc.? 31.174.125.226 22:09, 29 October 2013 (UTC)

  • There really isn't anything closely analogous on Commons, other than describing as accurately as possible and acknowledging your sources. If there are no sources, and it's not self-evident, then it's not worth much. - Jmabel ! talk 00:05, 30 October 2013 (UTC)

Adding graphic image to existing page

Three years ago, I created a website devoted to Shig Murao, a friend who died in 1999. His executor has granted me ownership of the image I want to use, but has not posted it. I've been trying to follow the instructions on how to post the photo, but got stuck when I got to the page asking if I have permission to post it. Do I need to post a copy of the form giving me ownership of the image or does the executor need to publish the photo first? (This would be a problem, as he has never dealt with Wikipedia and wouldn't know how to do it. — Preceding unsigned comment added by RichardReynolds (talk • contribs)

I want to help a friend who owns pictures

He owns the picture, but I am reluctant to ask him to figure out the complex procedure for uploading pictures. Is there a way that him can write a statement for me that I could use to enter his photos in Commons? The pictures in question are those taken of plaques that are put up on the Computer History Museum History wall.

Ed Bryan GEdwardBryan (talk) 00:45, 30 October 2013 (UTC)

  • The best way would be for your friend to send an email through the COM:OTRS process. Remember that your friend cannot limit the files usage to wikiprojects, but must release them on a free license. However, you mentioned that the photo is of plaques, you have to make sure that we can host the image in the first place pursuant to COM:FOP. It depends on what nation the photograph is taken in, and the nature of the plaque. Liamdavies (talk) 05:20, 30 October 2013 (UTC)

Family photograph taken before 1939.

How do I identify and license a family photograph taken before 1939? Subject died in 1938.--Dthomsen8 (talk) 13:53, 30 October 2013 (UTC)

  1. I'm not sure what you mean about "identifying" it, could you clarify?
  2. The issue wouldn't be the subject of the photo, the issue would be the photographer.
  3. You don't mention what country it is, and copyright laws vary from one country to another.
  4. If you are the heir of the photographer's intellectual property, then {{Heirs-license}} would be the key to licensing it appropriately. - Jmabel ! talk 16:07, 30 October 2013 (UTC)
By identify, I mean the information needed to describe the photograph. The photographer is unknown. The photograph is from Pennsylvania. But beyond all that, the {{Heirs-license}} appears to be the answer I need. Thank you.--Dthomsen8 (talk) 17:33, 30 October 2013 (UTC)
Sorry, but because the photographer is unknown you can not use {{Heirs-license}}—you can not be a heir of a unknown person. All this means that the photo is likely to be copyrighted for 120 years since the date of its creation as unpublished (?) anonymous work made in USA. Ruslik (talk) 18:40, 30 October 2013 (UTC)
