The page contains information on pronunciation files used in Wiktionaries, Wikipedias and Wikidata.

File format and the storehouse[edit]

Files need to be in ogg, mp3, wav or FLAC format (see Commons:Media help). Commons is the only place to store the files (do not store them on local Wiktionaries).

Inflections[edit]

Inflected forms should also be recorded in separate files (each containing one form), for example:

 • eng: one file for sg. man, one for pl. men
 • eng: one file for be, and one for each form of this verb (am, are, is, was, were, been, being...)
 • deu: one file for sg. Baum (tree), and one for each form of this noun (Bäume, Baumes, Bäumen...)
 • fra: one file for infinitive être (to be), and one for each form of this verb (suis, es, est, sommes, êtes, sont, étais, sera, fûtes...)

Naming the files[edit]

The name of the pronunciation file should contain at least every essential information such as:

 • The language spoken in the recording, using its ISO 639-3 code (for English, this code is "eng")
 • One (or several) place of learning of the language spoken, preferably a city, but it can also be a region or a country
 • An identifier for the person speaking. It can be the speaker's name, a pseudonym or a unique number, and it should be used for every file displaying pronunciations made by the same speaker
 • The pronounced word or phrase written with the language's own alphabet and spelling system when it has any, with an IPA transcription in other cases
 • The file extension, which can be .ogg, .wav, .mp3, .flac or .webm for audio, and .webm, .ogv or .mpg/.mpeg for video. More information on file types is available here

Note: When some words are spelt the same way, but pronounced differently (e.g. live in English), it is possible to add in the filename a number after the word (e.g. live2) and to include the explanation on the file description page.

Examples of possible filenames[edit]

 • eng-London-John Doe-sun.ogg
 • fra-Montréal-Dupont-soleil.wav
 • rus-1284413-Солнце.mp3
 • jap-Nickname28-太陽.flac

Pronunciation files made with Lingua Libre contain some essential information in their name, and the Wikidata Qid of the language. More information about the speaker (gender, places of learning and residence) is available directly on the speaker's page on Lingua Libre (the link is available on every Commons' file page description):

Category[edit]

Every pronunciation file should be put to a proper language category. For example, English pronunciation files should be under Category:English pronunciation category. So, please write like this:

Additionally, please add "how-to-read" in the parameter. For example, the file en-man.ogg should be appeared under a letter "m". Write as follows. Note that writing |Man will put the file under "M" letter, which is completely different!

Discussion[edit]

If you have questions or suggestions, please use the Talk-page for the discussion.

Help playing/recording sounds[edit]

For encoding Ogg Vorbis files, use quality 3.

How do I use the files in my Wiktionary or Wikipedia?[edit]

You don't need to re-upload any files - they will be fetched from Commons. The syntax is (local example - example from pl.wiktionary - example from it.wiktionary - example from nl.wiktionary).

Alternatively, you may create a template "Audio" containing "<span class="audiolink"></span>" (or something more complex) which will create links like this: pl-niemiecki.ogg ( Result: listen ). The audiolink class must be included in your wiki's Mediawiki:Common.css by an administrator.

Where do I find/request a particular recording?[edit]

Indicate "wikt" if Wiktionary or w if Wikipedia.
