Collage of various well known actors and actress from Hollywood's Golden Age.

Article(s): File is not being used in any articles, but is being used on a userpage as well as on some WikiProject pages on both English Wikipedia and Greek Wikipedia.

Request: File is a collage of 50 various PD or otherwise freely licensed images available on Commons. Five of the images, however, were deleted from Commons as copyright violations, but have not been removed from the collage itself. There is the similar File:Golden Age of Hollywood.png which basically serves the same encyclopedic purpose, so I'm not sure if both are needed. I guess it's possible for someone to remove the copy violations, and replace them with other images, but I don't really have the skill to do such a thing. This was discussed at COM:VP/C#File:Golden Hollywood.png and it was suggested there to ask for assistance at GL/P as an alternative to deletion of the collage. I am not heavily invested in the image and the original uploader (Blofeld Dr.) of the file has not responded to any pings or posts left on their user talk and has not edited at all for almost two years. If deletion is the best option, then so be it. I'd just thought I'd ask first to see if someone wants to try and clean this up. Thanks in advance. --Marchjuly (talk) 00:37, 11 January 2017 (UTC)

Hi y'all, I haven't been around in awhile but thought I'd check in and see how the Lab's getting along and 'weigh in' a bit. ... There's plenty of precedent for removing unwanted background elements in general and for cropping and adding neutral backgrounds to portraits; in fact 'removal of objects' is presented as an exemplary function of the Lab under 'Types of work done'. The orthodox way to go about such would be to upload the altered image under a new filename rather than overwriting the original file—as per the Commons:Overwriting existing files guidelines—while noting on the resultant file page that the image has been digitally altered and linking the original file (Template:Retouched picture, Template:Derived from, Template:Derivative versions). --Kevjonesin (talk) 09:35, 13 January 2017 (UTC)

Note: I came across some likely relevant details ... Item #1 at Talk:Donald_Trump#Current_consensuses_and_RfCs seems to strongly imply that any significant change to the present image may be considered controversial under the terms of COM:OVERWRITE at this time (and might even take on the appearance of an 'end run' around the consensus there). Anythingyouwant did you in fact end up topic banned from that article (and if so, are you still)? Regardless, if you'd still like an alternate image made without the 'smoking ear' effect I'm willing to fire up GIMP and make it happen, but if you're intention is to offer it as an option at en:Donald Trump please consider that it'll likely soon be superseded by some official White House portrait and hence may not be worth the effort. --Kevjonesin (talk) 21:06, 13 January 2017 (UTC)

Comment @Gikü: You can essentially achieve the same type of result on your own with the template w:template:photomontage without making a single montage image and any individual image can be changed at will. Remember that your selection of images, that very considerably in resolution, need a lot of work resizing them to a similar size to create a montage while the template I suggest can seamlessly use images of totally different resolutions. There are a few other parameter options linked on the template page. The "photomontage" template works on the rowiki, which I think is where you are most active, and I've done a test there on my ro sandbox at: ro:Utilizator:Ww2censor/sandbox. There are several parameters that can be changed and, because the images are different proportions, you may want to crop some, without having to change the resolutions, so they are more similar in size. In that case use the CropTool on commons images by adding CropTool to your page by activating it in your Preference under Gadgets. If you can work with my test just post a "section resolved" template as noted below. Ww2censor (talk) 14:31, 27 February 2017 (UTC)

I´m refering to the recent wikipedia entry in portuguese: Políptico das Sete Dores de Maria, and at the first image in it. I think should be better the readers could have an image of the original ensemble, like the existing in the english wikipedia entry: w:Seven Sorrows Polyptych.

There are a few other options linked on those pages. I'm not sure it works on any other language wikis - I tested the dewiki and it does not work there but the multiple image does work on the ptwiki. That median filtering was a tad too destructive here, don't you think? The eyes, hair and collar are needlessly affected from the median filter. Median filtering is definitely good here, but I recommend applying it only selectively. What I usually do in cases like this is put a copy of the non-filtered image on top of the filtered one and use the eraser on the spots that need cleaning. Make sure the top image has an alpha channel first, though, otherwise it won't work. I also recommend checking out the "repair" section of tools in G'MIC, especially the "remove hot pixels" one, if you happen to not have used them before, they're great. —Quibik (talk) 17:27, 5 January 2017 (UTC)

Hi Ezarate, my proposal initially only as an unofficial upload. It might need an explanation. The crop brings the motif into the center and avoids most of the dark spots. The coloring (also a VW original color!) has two advantages: Higher contrast against background (right side) and reduced contrast against the outshined areas. What do you think about that? @PawełMM: Thank You, so much. But, I´m sorry, is not possible reduce the width of the two images, so that the exterior side of the images match with the same of the blue triangles. Probably, is better delete the blue triangles. If shrink of the images is not suitable, I´ll made another scheme without the upper figures. To the first photo cut the left arch, so we should see only the main chapel 2. then, put the second image proportionally over the first one, given an idea of how the Polyptych should appear at the origin. If it is not possible, is alright. Previously was a scheme taken from a book that was (correctely) deleted from the Commons, and so from the article. This is a try to substitute the deleted image. PawełMM Would you 1. Cut the photo at left in order the organ not be seen (because in the XVI century the organ were not there); and 2. increase the image of the Polyptich slightly, so that the bottom line should be on the level of the altar towel, that, by the sides, covers the two columns of dark marble, and, at the top, should be on the top of the dark marble frieze (going from side to side of the chapel). The image of the Polyptych I beg to enlarge a little, in order to, by side, cover completely the columns, at the bottom, to reach to the white towel of the altar, and at the top to cover the black friese. (This is mainly to be close of the deleted image. Graphist opinion(s): Done, @Wehwalt: downloaded a fresh tif version that was much higher resolution, adjusted the levels considerable to brighten the mid tones and the white point. Then uploaded that as a new tif version, also converted into jpg format and overwrote the original low resolution image. See above. Need help fixing blur

TMS setup

Request: I tried holding my phone still to the best of my ability but there's still some motion blur. I uploaded the original. I used HDR feature. Could somebody please help me fix this? There's no other image of a TMS setup and it could be used if it looked sharper and cropped (and foreground chair removed if possible). Also needs orientation fixed. Re-shoot. You have so much against you from improving this image. Assume that you know the owner of the TMS treatment centre. S/he shouldn’t have any objection to you having another try. On Auto (on your iPhone) under artificial light the shutter speed according to the EXIF data file shows an exposure time 1/20 sec... which is far to slow for a hand-held shot. So there is no way, to correct this type of blurring. Suggestion: For a second successful shot: Borrow a friend’s or neighbour's digital camera and trypod, then have them set it to 400 or even 800 ISO film speed. Have them set it too, not to Auto but 'Portrait' (and auto white balance and compulsory flash suppression of course). Then whilst you are still there, turn the ring to 'close up' (it has the symbol of a flower). Then take some photos of the TMS unit itself (the thing on the quadrupedal casters and also the driving modules connected by the high current blue cable). Upload again to the same file name as to over-write the original image. The owner can also provide name of the equipment s/he uses. This too can be added to the description to make the image more informative. P.S. We do not allow advertising nor promotion in any way here on Wiki projects but it think that name of this hospital could be mentioned in the description itself. For heaven’s sake though, if you do a re-shoot, get those two chairs, door handle and the clutter removed. Show them your original photo and they will quickly get the point that in a photo this looks bad and shows that you are considerate and worthy of a being granted an opportunity to create a good (if not great) publishable image. Finally. You will need a digital that has a lens that can go down to very wide angle. Try it out first to see if you can get the room in. My gut reaction is that your iPhone over did it. You don't need to include the white-board and door handle. View this as not a 'fail' but learning experience. P.g.champion (talk) 18:01, 10 July 2017 (UTC)

I don't have access to another camera or a tripod and I may not get a chance to retake. I think the problem is a combination of shake and that HDR was used and it tried to put together 3 images. It had the option to keep the original image but I had it turned off. Shake and blur is a problem with most of my pictures because I have tremors. I'd highly recommend a tripod. And if the DSLR you get uses a mirror that flips up, set the camera to have a 1-second delay between that the shutter opening for shots that don't require a fast shutter speed. PumpkinSky talk 13:10, 11 July 2017 (UTC)

@Technophant: Just a another tip if you have no alternate tools. Get rid of the chairs and use us one a makeshift tripod. You can also crop in tighter. Gently rest your iPhone along the back of one of the chairs, or use a table or flat top stool where you can actually set the iPhone down properly, raising it on a sturdy box if necessary, maybe you have to kneel on the floor, then when you are ready to take the shot, hold your breath momentarily and don't prod or poke the button on the touch screen just gently touch it. If you can't to it due to your tremors, ask someone else to take it after you have set it up and don't forget you can always move some of the things closer to one another and put them back afterwards. Make sure to check the photo before you leave the location. Maybe even taking a few versions. You can try this technique at home and see the results before going back there. @PawełMM: Good job, or at least nice try. I realize there's limits to blur removal. If this were resampled and converted to greyscale it could be used. I was in the only part of the hospital that allowed cell phones and this room happened to have the door open so I snapped a shot. I do often take 3 photos because usally only one or 2 are acceptable. @PawełMM: The looks great, almost perfect. I'm really impressed. Just one thing if you would. The shadows. There's a light grey natural looking shadow and a dark oval that doesn't look right. If you can lighten that oval to the same shade as the lighter shadows it will done. It's quite likely the highest quality image him ever taken. You can tell that he seems to have dry cracked skin on his forehead and dandruff. This one was a posed photo, perhaps for publicity or historical purposes by a professional.

BTW: This guy plays a part in my family story. Not as a direct descendant, however he played a pivotal role in sponsoring my g-grandaunt when she first came here unaccompanied at the tender ago of 13 with $30 of borrowed money in her pocket (you were supposed to have at least $50). @Frze, PawełMM, and Danmichaelo: I can't rotate many of these files with CropTool for the following reasons:

It doesn't support TIFF, PDF, or video formats.
1 degree is sometimes too much of an adjustment, and digital portions of degrees are deemed invalid.
Its crop + rotation appears to be buggy sometimes, cropping too little from the top.
I sometimes miss a pixel or two of white borders on the top & left due to no shadow there on the preview.

Request: This image suffers from the crosshatching or chequerboarding pattern common to many scanned pages from hathitrust. I'm hoping somebody can perhaps smooth out the patterning a bit - preferably without losing detail on the ship. Also, the top corners have differently shaded curves residual from the original, it would be nice if these could be matched with the rest of the background. Sorry guys, I didn't realize it would be that difficult, I thought a good paint program would just have some kind of "smoothing" option to do this quickly. Having said that, I'm not sure either of these options are an improvement, I prefer Begoon's effort but the smoke from the smokestacks looks a bit weird. Gatoclass - it's only difficult because to do a good job one has to do a lot of intricate masking so as not to "smooth" the areas that should be left alone. Some of the details of the ship are very light and fine, and being black and white, very close to the background.

Having said that, you were right about the smoke - I did some clumsy masking there. So I've remasked that, increased the background "smoothing" a bit, and uploaded a new version, which might be a little better. You can compare the version you commented on with the latest. It's still not what I'd call very good, and I fully understand if you still don't use it, as I'm not sure I would, but there it is. Incidentally, the smoke is pretty "weird" in the original too, but I know what you meant. -- Begoon 02:15, 27 September 2017 (UTC)

Once again, your efforts are very much appreciated, but the issue I canvassed previously was not actually the only one on my mind. Another issue is that the smoothing in the sky now stands out in stark contrast to the scratchiness of the rest of the image, making the retouching very obvious. Also, the masking around the rigging was inevitably a bit rough. That could probably be fixed with sufficient effort, but it won't solve the other issue which is more important. A larger issue also arises which is how far from the original image should one be prepared to deviate? That's not always an easy call, but in this case as I said I think the retouching is simply too obvious. Not that I want to suggest your work is in any way at fault - the essential problem is that the original image is poor quality, and fixing one part of it only makes the defects in the rest more apparent. Note (2): There's what looks like a "repair" on the far left where the "wing" is chipped and looks like it's mounted on a backboard of some sort. Yeah, that's ok (there's a bit of a white 'halo' in places) - I didn't like my blurred one much, really. But don't you think by the time you take that much out it may as well just be a completely plain background? Ата there is likely some faulty hardware that is causing that problem, some of the possible issues could be a problem with the cameras sensor, could be a problem with the lens being used, could be problem with the memory in the camera causing corruption of the files. Done @Zigzig20s: in future you can do this yourself by using the CropTool that can be activated in your Commons Preferences, under Gadgets. The CropTool will then appears in the left side of your screen. It even leaves a backlink to the original and visa versa. If you are just cropping a small bit of the image like a frame you can decide to overwrite the original image but for more major crops, like these you can upload the cropped version as a separate new image. I have to be careful what I say here as I had a run-in with a particular editor recently and I'd like to avoid any unnecessary interactions with them for the time being, as I don't wish to be accused of trying to antagonize the situation. That said, I've been asked to comment so here I am.

In July this year I opened an RfC in response to repeated requests being made at the English Wikipedia Photography Workshop to convert JPG photographs to PNGs. As noted at the RfC there are several issues with the software. There were also some referrals to existing guidelines if I remember correctly. Unfortunately, not everyone believes that guidelines ought to be followed (since they are 'only' guidelines). I'll refrain from any further comment on the matter.

The best course of action is to convert to JPG, as Carnby has already done. If you insist on using PNGs you could try opening the file in an editor, which is probably grayscale, converting to RGB then re-saving as an RGB file. This might take care of the gamma issue, but the thumbnails will still appear blurred. It's a known bug that has been reported many times over the years and shows little sign of being fixed. To be fair, the PNG filetype isn't really suitable for photographs anyway, so 'fixing' the issue would be like genetically modifying apples to taste like oranges, because you prefer the taste of oranges but insist on eating apples. I removed the background in the jpg, leaving a white background, and also created a png with transparent background from the same master file (because jpg doesn't support transparency).
The image quality is almost identical at full size (see file description pages to compare), but, annoyingly, Mediawiki/ImageMagick often creates 'blurry' thumbnails from png files, so which one you use is up to you. Personally, I'd stick with the jpg. -- Begoon 04:48, 5 October 2017 (UTC)

IMO this is not a good candidate for improvement. The amount of changes required would render this no longer a true representation of the painting. It would be better to try to get another image of this than trying to warp this into a presentable image. I'm marking this request stale, the request will be here for ten more days till archival. Yes, but the uploader is not the photographer. The photographer holds the copyright to their photograph of the frame, even if the frame itself is PD. It seems silly, but it seems those are the rules. - Themightyquill (talk) 11:02, 21 December 2017 (UTC)
