Umbenennungen Vs. Beschreibungsänderung[edit]

Hi, wenn du eine Anfrage zur Umbenennung wie hier machst und einen anderen Titel möchtest, als das was in der Beschreibung steht, so wirst du immer Probleme haben, dazu umbenannt zu bekommen. Woher soll ich denn wissen was stimmt? Du musst schon eine komplette Vorarbeit machen. Das bedeutet eben auch, die Beschreibung korrekt zu ändern. Press credentials[edit]

Hello. You raised the issue of press credentials at meta:Talk:Wikimedia_Foundation_Annual_Plan/2016-2017/draft#Protecting_Commons_photographers_from_harassment_by_police_or_security_forces. I agree that policy should be developed about this but right now, there are not many people demanding this service so I think it will be 2-3 years at the soonest before the Wikimedia Foundation could possibly become involved in the issue.

I also do not think that a regional authority is best for managing an international process, but such as things are, if you find it useful to talk with the New York City group about this, then I and perhaps others would join in a conversation with you. Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the second round of the 2015 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the tenth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2015) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year were entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

There are two total rounds of voting. In the first round, you voted for as many images as you liked. In Round 1, there were 1322 candidate images. There are 56 finalists in Round 2, comprised of the top 30 overall as well as the top #1 and #2 from each sub-category. In the final round, you may vote for just one or maximal three image to become the Picture of the Year.

Round 2 will end on 28 May 2016, 23:59:59 UTC.

Renaming files donated by the Peace Palace Library - please leave donor number in![edit]

Bester Osveno,

I see you changed filenames taking out numbers, for instance 9308 out of what is now File:Dankaerts-Historis-9308 - Franconia map.tiff in an earlier version. But these numbers have a meaning, i could have told you if you had asked. The donor and i can check and track whether the numbered images are there. If you take them out, i can't easily track them, it gets too messy. So if you want to change filenames please do it like

A - B - number => A - B - number - your description

Dankaerts-Historis-9308 => Dankaerts-Historis-9308 - Franconia map, or similar

then the files of an author show up in numerical order and can be tracked. Do you have a list of all my uploaded filenames you have changed? I want to keep the donation neat in this respect. Just discuss with me what you don't like. Thank you, Hansmuller (talk) 21:01, 6 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

PS. This upload has to be done in a hurry in 2014, good descriptions were not available, so i only had the donation number, author and book name to go by. The donor and I still use the number to check if files are lost etc. for instance "where in 6308?" etc.

Dear Hansmuller, I am glad you contacted me about this matter. Please don't take my answer personally. I do not know if you are a volunteer like me, but I do a lot of categorizing just for the sake of helping Commons improve and grow. This can be very boring work, but by doing so I help make media retrievable for people looking for a media to go with their article. Giving media files descriptive names is just as important. I am wondering weather the Commons rules on this are clear to the donor ? If not, someone should have explained them. Often it seems that bulk donors are mostly concerned with their own systems. They seem to forget that if every donor does this, Commons Wikimedia will soon turn into a modern Babylon. I would hope the donor gives the respect it deserves to the system used by Commons, but it seems many don't. Regretfully, the intentions often don't match the implementation. Example: I often see institutions write down the name of the photographer that took a picture of a painting as the author of the painting. It's not fair of donors to expect us Commons volunteers to clean up the mess after them. It doesn't matter if the donor was in a hurry, since the rules on Commons are very clear. A file name must be descriptive of it's content. Just filling in some archive number isn't acceptable. Possibly Commons can create a different way for the donor to track the files. Perhaps by using a script within a template ? I love the Peace Palace Library and all it stands for. As a matter of fact, I have several times visited the Peace Palace and it's library. Now, I am open to reasoning. So, my question to you is: Is this donor going to provide descriptive names for all uploaded media, or is the donor expecting from Commons volunteers that we do that work for them ? Where these on-descriptive file names intended as a temporary solution ? If so, I suggest that there be a template created stating this fact and it to be placed on the page of each file. Otherwise you'll have to write a lot more messages like this in the future, unless you expect us to know this by telepathic powers. In the mean while, until this matter has been resolved I will (at least temporarily) refrain from further renaming of this donors files. I come back later to your donor question. In the mean time of course your improving filenames is appreciated, as long as you keep the order of the pages in the original book, which is guaranteed by keeping the number in the file name. I have changed some of the new filenames to keep the page order (= the donor number order) in Category:Prints_from_Dankaerts_Historis_at_the_Peace_Palace_Library, for example
Now we have
  • 1. author 2. book title 3. donation number 4. description,
in the proper order in the filename. In the category the order now is again is the order of the illustrations in the book.
PS1 Most mass uploaders all use a system like this with donor numbers, i also used it for Naturalis, for example Category:Songbird specimens at Naturalis Biodiversity Center or User:Husky's Category:Media from Atlas of Mutual Heritage.
PS2 If you change a filename by adding a description, please start by filling in the description field in the template if it's not done before. And there is the risk of overinterpretation of an image, for instance your change in what is now called File:Nieuhof-Ambassade-vers-la-Chine-1665 0746-2 - Ambassadeurs Logement.tiff. ("Ambassadeurs Logement") You supposed this was the "Dutch embassy". I filled in the description - it is just the lodging for the night, no embassy yet. But then the Dutch visitors to the emperor of China were allowed to fly the Dutch flag, or at least the illustration suggests this...perhaps the flag was added later for the European readership ;-)).

Dear OSeveno, I still owe you an explanation why i had to dump many images in 2014 quickly on Commons. In the project Wikipedians in Special Residence (nl, en incomplete) i could visit eleven Dutch institutions to help them donate to and work with Wikipedia in a fixed time schedule. The first large batch of ~2000 photographs was donated by the Peace Palace Library, but i couldn't transfer the scarce descriptions which could not be used for file names of the photographs anyway: it was "take them or leave them", a gift not to be discarded. So in a run against the clock i have uploaded them with as much information as was available then. This year i have added 1000+ missing descriptions so that the bulk of the collection is now described. Ugly filenames remain, however they contain the author, booktitle and a sequence number by the photographer which follows the order of the pages in the book. Hansmuller, thank you for the explanation. It does make me understand the predicament you were in. It's great you are willing to do this on site work. Nonetheless, it should still be possible to adjust the file names to meet the Commons requirement that they should be descriptive of the content. Perhaps you could make an appeal to the Commons community to help out. Don't forget, that other Commons members could start renaming the images on the same grounds. Insults must be deleted[edit]

Hi. I will make a request for you. Revision texts of publicly insulted changes to Mustafa Kemal Atatürk are hidden in the Dutch Wikipedia. If you are a competent (an administrator), delete them, please. If you do not have the authority to do this, open a topic for it on the article's discussion page or communicate with someone who can do it. I can not make any changes in the Dutch Wikipedia. I connect to the Wikis via VPN because Wikipedia is banned in my country.

The changes that need to be deleted from the revision text record are: [1], [2], [3], [4], [5], [6], [7], [8], [9], [10] (The second of the same change, must be deleted), [11], [12], [13], [14], [15], [16], [17], [18], [19], [20], [21], [22], [23].     • And here I thought this historical photograph was a good example of the popular worship that existed for the subject of the article. After all, it is not a photo of the demolishing of a statute, but of the erection of a statue. The photo is on the Dutch language Wikipedia, and in the Netherlands it is very uncommon to erect statue's of popular political leaders, while they are still alive. Therefor, the photo is a 'speaking' example to point out a difference in culture of different countries. It underlines the popularity of the subject of the article during his life. It is of educational value. The photo therefor should be within the boundaries of good taste of the Dutch language Wikipedia. Besides that, the suggestion that placing the photo was intended for the purpose of insulting anyone, is ridiculous. I don't know how lengthy the description was, if a Commons user wrote it or if it was imported from Flickr, can't find the Flickr file.. The description may not have been long enough to be eligible for copyright protection. If this interests you, take a look at Commons talk:How Alamy is stealing your images. Als je een foto tegenkomt van een schilderij of ander (2D) kunstwerk dat in het publiek domein is, maar voorzien is van een Creative Commons licentie dan kan je {{Licensed-PD-Art}} gebruiken. Hi OSeveno,

Op OTRS hebben wij een bericht ontvangen betreffende deze afbeelding, door jou geupload. De mailer (architectuurhistoricus van beroep) zegt dat het hier niet de architect, maar een in Den Haag woonachtige notaris met dezelfde naam betreft - bij de mail is een kleine weergave van een man met kort wit haar, bovenop zijn hoofd geen haar maar enkel een 'krans', een puntige snor, en geen baard gevoegd: dat zou de "echte" architect Schadee zijn. Zijn bron is dit boek, waar hij ook de foto uitgehaald heeft die hij naar ons zond.

Otto Willem de Nobel[edit]

Beste OSeveno, ik zie dat jij je regelmatig (?) ophoudt in den Haag. Ik ben op zoek naar een foto van het grafmonument van Otto Willem de Nobel, dat te bewonderen is op de Algemene Begraafplaats Kerkhoflaan in Den Haag. Het zou gaan om vak B/V10/29. Het beeld wordt nog genoemd in de gids Graven van historisch belangrijke graven uit 2009. Het bestaat uit een lier, stemvork en een afbeelding van een opkomende zon. Prachtig! Ik ga nog even nakijken of ik de naam van de kunstenaar kan vinden; ik heb alleen de achternaam Hoek. Mocht je eropuit willen met dit weer, ik zoek ook nog een foto van een doorzichtige wereldbol bij een kantoor van de ANWB. Dat beeld stond ooit in Asd, maar is vertrokken. @Annerobe: In orde natuurlijk. Ik heb afgelopen weken op Dailymotion de TV serie Colditz (1972-1974)(weer) bekeken. Uiteraard was de werkelijkheid van het leven in Colditz anders dan in de serie, maar het laat je wel nadenken.
