Any time you see an image in your browser, your computer has downloaded it.
Assuming you are on a PC, you normally save a file to your computer's hard drive by right-clicking on it and then selecting "Save image as..." from the right-click menu. This is note specific to Commons, this should work on any site on the web that has not actively prevented it.
In addition, on Commons, if you want out highest-resolution version of an image so that you can download that, you can either click on the image or click on the last entry in the line immediately under the image (e.g. "Size of this preview: 800 × 533 pixels. Other resolutions: 320 × 213 pixels | 640 × 427 pixels | 1,024 × 683 pixels | 1,280 × 853 pixels | 2,560 × 1,707 pixels | 6,000 × 4,000 pixels."). Either will load the full-resolution version, which you can then right-click and selecting "Save image as..." from the right-click menu.
Apologies that I cannot reply in Turkish, but I'd be relying on machine translation which I'm sure you can as easily do yourself. - Jmabel ! talk 01:40, 2 December 2024 (UTC)

Just found my original artwork of the Last Supper on Wikimedia. My website page here https://freechristimages.com/bible-stories/last-supper.html shows it is only available as a print. I'll add my copyright info right away. Here is the original upload to wikimedia: https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=File:Art-100.jpg&oldid=297632321 and the current page stating it is in the public domain (it is not in the public domain) https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Art-100.jpg Any help taking it down would be greatly appreciated! I'm interested in uploading self-made SVG versions of the Turkish military insignia to feature in Wikipedia (regiment-level bodies). The issue is that (on the contrary to most countries) the Turkish copyright law does not consider government emblems/works created by pubic servants in public domain. They also don't have licenses on government websites. Therefore, as a Commons newbie, I cannot find any way to legitimately upload such content. Some people I have seen just credited such works for themselves, and claimed they are the sole owners of the work, but I think such an action would not be allowed. Thanks! AscendencyXXIV (talk) 22:51, 1 December 2024 (UTC)

@AscendencyXXIV: actually, the majority of countries in the worlld are more like Turkey on this. - Jmabel ! talk 01:54, 2 December 2024 (UTC)
Term of protection for anonymous works in Turkey is 70 years, so presumably anything of this sort before 1954 is out of copyright there. However, I'm wondering if the URAA means that anything 1939-1954 is still copyrighted in the U.S. That's subtle, and might better be a question for Commons:Village pump/Copyright. - Jmabel ! talk 02:02, 2 December 2024 (UTC)

Is it possible to rename files?

Greetings, I was wondering if this could be done because it appears that an image of a submarine has been misidentified.

A couple months back, an IP user removed this file (File:HMS Resolution (S22) in 1977.jpg) from the respective sub's article and the article about her class stating that the sub in the photo is actually USS Lafayette (SSBN-616). After doing some investigating it appears this IP user is correct.

Has I'm not too familiar with Wikimedia commons, if it is possible to rename a file, what should I do next? Earle Bartibus Huxley (talk) 15:22, 3 December 2024 (UTC)

YouTube CC licenses?

Hello. This might be a mobile-only issue, but for some reason, YouTube CC licenses appear to no longer be visible at the bottom of the description of YouTube videos. Any idea where to check the license now? I don't think it's a case of YouTube suddenly removing the feature because you can still search for 'Creative Commons' videos. Starklinson (talk) 03:49, 2 December 2024 (UTC)

@Starklinson: The licence is still visible for me using Firefox on Linux. For example, on https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OYCjGfQJ4kw I can click "...more" at the end of the description below the video and "Licence Creative Commons Attribution Licence (reuse allowed)" appears at the bottom of the expanded description. Something is wrong with this image

When I open the following file: File:Die andere Bibliothek Band 470 Nummer 1991.jpg I see "Create" in the menu line above, it should be "Edit" instead. There is something missing, how to fix? --Wurgl (talk) 08:12, 3 December 2024 (UTC)

There are 380 problems of this kind: quarry:query/88395 --Wurgl (talk) 09:01, 3 December 2024 (UTC)
Like your query says, they are "images on Commons with missing description page". It looks like a sort of occasional bug. Many images currently listed there are part of rapid mass uploads by bots. Maybe a page was occasionally skipped. Fortunately, 380 images seems a relatively small number compared with the number of images uploaded. I don't know if it is necessary to create the description pages manually or if there is some automated procedure that takes care of fixing that. If it needs to be done manually, it is probably possible to figure out what goes in the page by a combination of looking at the information in the upload log and the information in the pages of related images uploaded by the uploader near the same time. Or simply notify the uploader and ask that they create the page. You could ask also at Commons:Village pump/Technical. See also recent discussions at Commons:Upload Wizard feedback#Missing (description) page after Upload and phabricator T374235. -- Asclepias (talk) 10:55, 3 December 2024 (UTC)
In a query on the command line I added img_timestamp and it starts with 20200924161905 (and ends with 20241203101928) … so I doubt the existence of some automagic procedure. Feel free to move this section to some better page. --Wurgl (talk) 11:49, 3 December 2024 (UTC)
I've fixed the ones uploaded by GeographBot, since I know where to get good descriptions for them. --bjh21 (talk) 17:51, 3 December 2024 (UTC)
Thanks! I added the actor and the date in the query. So maybe some more data can be added. --Wurgl (talk) 10:21, 4 December 2024 (UTC)
See also the list Files without file pages by Achim55, who seems to have been tracking this since April 2023. That list is apparently updated a few times each month. The history of the page allows to see the evolution of the situation, with some files added and some files removed when users create the description pages. -- Asclepias (talk) 13:28, 4 December 2024 (UTC)

Uploading pictures to wikimedia commons

Can I upload the images I took at the Santa Fe College Teaching Zoo? Aweatherspoon (talk) 21:48, 3 December 2024 (UTC)

@Aweatherspoon: Quite likely, but where you took them is not very informative in deciding if they are OK. Have you looked at Commons' scope? Also, if they are pictures of other people's copyrighted material (e.g. any but the most trivial signs, or other people's artwork), that would be a problem. - Jmabel ! talk 20:08, 4 December 2024 (UTC)

Disregard above reply, I thought we were on Commons:Overwriting existing files/Requests. Ratekreel (talk) 19:21, 4 December 2024 (UTC)
@JayCubby: that is pretty much what I do. Express the connection by linking the two using {{Other version}} or a more specialized template pair ({{Extracted images}} / {{Extracted from}}; {{Derivative works}} / {{Derived from}}; etc.) - Jmabel ! talk 20:18, 4 December 2024 (UTC)

What about my photo

I have already filled up a photo on 1st December. I want to use it in Wikipedia item Nechay Olivér but there was no any reflection about "Nechay- photo from a gallery.jpg" and I can not find to use it to improve that. May I expect a confirmation about its usable permission? With compliments Phomalike (talk) 10:20, 4 December 2024 (UTC)

Is it licensed under a license that lets anyone to use it? If not, you can't use it and if you do, you might get in big trouble. Gnu779 (talk) 13:40, 4 December 2024 (UTC)
@Phomalike: If you look at your filter log, you can see that you triggered a filter for small files by new users. It says that it issued a warning, but apparently it disallowed the upload. Maybe the people at Commons:Village pump/Technical could tell you more about this type of situation. -- Asclepias (talk) 14:09, 4 December 2024 (UTC)
@Phomalike: as you can imagine, there is a reason we prevent cross-wiki uploads of small files by relatively new users: most of them are copyright violations.
Is this a photo you took yourself? If not where does it come from (URL of web page, if it was online)? - Jmabel ! talk 20:13, 4 December 2024 (UTC)
This Photo came out in a Hungarian Journal of "Növényvédelem" 2024, 85 [N. S. 60]: 11. 514-518 but it is available in printed form in Hungarian. Please find the attached copy of this containing this photo. Internet adaptation will be available later as an archive Journal item.
Please confirm anyone that I can use this in a Wikipedia item or not de jure. As I am not familiar in Licence regules, please indicate what I could apply in such a situation? Phomalike (talk) 09:22, 5 December 2024 (UTC)
So I suppose that it is a recent picture. For such an image, we require a formal written permission for a free license from the copyright holder. Please see COM:VRT for the procedure. Yann (talk) 09:32, 5 December 2024 (UTC)
In short, if you are not the copyright-holder there is no legitimate way to upload this to Commons without a license from the copyright-holder. - Jmabel ! talk 20:36, 5 December 2024 (UTC)

how to modify a map range for an animal ?

Good evening, So I'm in Québec 3 hours from Montréal (a bit more north) and for the last 10 years, we've been seeing turkey vultures. However, the map on the Turkey vulture wiki does not seem to indicate that our range has turkey vultures in the summer. I've never contributed to wikipédia, but I would love to help since this animal is one of animals showing signs of the climate changes. (mostly due to how, in my father's younger days, there was a LOT of snow and never seeing these birds. Nowadays we see them every summer when it's time to fill the freezer with the farm stuff) 70.81.176.44 00:25, 5 December 2024 (UTC)

By "the Turkey vulture wiki" I'm guessing you mean en:Turkey vulture, the "Turkey vulture" page on the English-language Wikipedia. (If you meant something else, please clarify!) And in that case, you must mean this map which, interestingly, was last modified less than 2 weeks ago by MPF.
There are basically three possibilities here; for all of these, providing a citeable source for the expanded range rather than just anecdotal evidence would be good, but might not be necessary.
  1. contact MPF and see if they can/will help you.
  2. put in a request at Commons:Graphic Lab/Map workshop.
  3. create your own version of the map. This one may be a little tricky though. To upload content at all, you need to create an account, but because you are not an established user, you won't be able to overwrite someone else's file, so you'd have to upload your version with a different file name. You would link back to File:Turkeyvulturerange.jpg using {{derived from|Turkeyvulturerange.jpg}} and ideally add {{derivative works|YOUR FILE NAME HERE.EXT}} to File:Turkeyvulturerange.jpg. Then you could go back to the English-language Wikipedia and propose changing the article to use your map (or just make the edit in the article yourself).

I'd recommend going with one of the first two possibilities: replacing existing images with derivative works is relatively advanced stuff, not usually where anyone starts their involvement with Wikimedia Commons and Wikipedia.

In any case, I recommend creating an account (and providing your email address as part of setting up the account: it will not be shown publicly) if you are going to become at all involved here. It makes it much easier for other editors to communicate with you. - Jmabel ! talk 01:03, 5 December 2024 (UTC)
It's a bit of a difficult case, as we have to rely on published information for maps. Submit your sightings to your local bird club (remember to give them accurate location data!), and eventually (yes, it'll be slow!) the information about the expanded range will work into maps published in bird field guides, etc., and when they do, we can revise our map here. I'll check other recent maps though and see if there is anything that already gives more up-to-date information than our map has. Thanks for bringing this up! - MPF (talk) 10:12, 5 December 2024 (UTC)
I've updated it from iNaturalist observations; this can be risky for some species, but with a conspicuous easily-recognised species like this, it does give reasonably safe results by taking the denser observations while ignoring outliers (the mapped observations will also be weak in sparsely-populated areas with few observers like southern South America). - MPF (talk) 20:45, 5 December 2024 (UTC)

but in response, it’s a page about my pastor, why is it that it’s a COI when other pastors have the same?? 2A00:23A8:951:1E01:C111:4015:4668:6647 20:48, 5 December 2024 (UTC)
You can't write objectively about your pastor, since it is a matter that is close to you. There are also notability requirements that your pastor would have to meet to have an article about them. Abzeronow (talk) 22:39, 5 December 2024 (UTC)
So to make it clear, the main reason why it was taken down is because there are requirements my pastor would have to meet? Which requirements are those exactly? 2A02:C7C:52E0:5700:607E:2727:B90A:30C5 22:41, 5 December 2024 (UTC)
I'm not an admin at enwiki so I can't say for sure what was the main reason, the COI could have been it. @Bastique: who might have some insight here. Abzeronow (talk) 22:51, 5 December 2024 (UTC)
Are you tagging me because I'm a pastor with no article? 😅 Bastique ☎ let's talk! 05:58, 6 December 2024 (UTC)
@Apostle John Enumah: assuming the non-logged-in remarks are also from you: if you want to argue the case, you'll have to do that on the relevant website, the English-language Wikipedia, not here on Commons. You initially were asked simply why you were being told this; I hoped to spare you referral to a different site than where you asked by answering that question where you asked this. But this is like if you went to the electric company to ask why your gas bill was high, and they told you what they figured was the answer, and you started trying to argue the gas bill with them. We can't help you change your gas bill. - Jmabel ! talk 23:37, 5 December 2024 (UTC)
@Apostle John Enumah and/or Anon IP: You need to address the issues on your talk page on English Wikipedia. User pages are not for encyclopedia biographies, which have specific requirements nevertheless. They are for people who edit the projects and upload media and relate to how that is done. I'm a pastor myself, but my user page tells a little bit about me personally but is mainly to provide information about my work on these projects. Bastique ☎ let's talk! 16:06, 6 December 2024 (UTC)

Nikita.opanasiuk (talk) 13:27, 6 December 2024 (UTC)

Uploading a photo of a deceased soldier
Good afternoon. How can I upload a photo of a deceased soldier? I made an article for him - he is a teacher at my school, where I currently work (uk:Levkovsky_Maksim_Vasilyovych). The photo was provided by his mother and she gives permission to use it, the photo was taken by his military unit. I can get written permission from my mother. I just don't really understand whether I need to upload it under a free license to Commons or through fair use to the Ukrainian Wikipedia.
translator: Google Translate via   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 14:28, 6 December 2024 (UTC)

Hi, and welcome. We need permission from the Ukrainian military (unless the photo was first published before January 1, 1951, and the creator (if known) died before that date) via VRT per COM:Ukraine. If you can't get a compliant license, the image may still be uploaded to English or Ukrainian Wikipedia in compliance with en:WP:F or uk:ВП:ДК because we don't allow Fair Use here.   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 14:28, 6 December 2024 (UTC)

Use of image allowed but partially

Hello, I would like to use an image from a website to illustrate a Wikipedia article, but I'm not sure if I can. On the website it is written : "The reproduction of all or part of this website on an electronic medium is allowed, provided that the source [website url] and the mention 'All rights reserved' are clearly and visibly included. The information used must be for personal, associative, or professional purposes only; any use for commercial or advertising purposes is excluded" So I think usage in this context would be allowed, but I'm not sure. Is there a specific license category for Wikipedia that corresponds to this kind of authorization/restriction? PheonixU+221E (talk) 15:53, 6 December 2024 (UTC)

@PheonixU+221E: Hi, and welcome. We don't allow such images because "any use for commercial or advertising purposes is excluded". See COM:LJ for the justification.   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 16:47, 6 December 2024 (UTC)

ABOUT IMAGE UPLOAD

Hello all, I want to upload image which is my profile pic image. even though I have clicked it by myself wikipedia says "We could not determine whether this file is suitable for Wikimedia Commons. Please only upload photos that you took yourself with your camera" help me to upload my image HardikKansara106 (talk) 02:41, 5 December 2024 (UTC)

@HardikKansara106: Hi, and welcome. I am sorry to inform you that you have triggered Special:AbuseFilter/153 by trying to cross-wiki upload a smaller (<50,000 bytes or <2,000,000 pixels) jpg photo as a new user. The photo you tried to upload is smaller. Usually when someone uploads a smaller photo, it is a copyright violation taken from the web. You have also triggered that same filter by trying to cross-wiki upload a png image as a new user. Such uploads of png images are not allowed at all. You indicated each is your own work. Usually when someone uploads a png image, it's a copyright violation taken from the web. Please upload the full-size original of each per COM:HR, including any metadata, but it may be judged too complex to be under TOO in the country of origin, so you (or the photographer or designer) may need to license them on your official website or social media or send permission via VRT. Also, any png image will look fuzzy when scaled down (due to design decisions discussed in phab:T192744) or jaggy when scaled up, so you may want to upload an svg or jpg version, too. If you use our Upload Wizard instead, you should be able to avoid that filter. Also, we do not have profiles here like en:User:HardikKansara106/sandbox. Social networks have profiles.   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 11:06, 6 December 2024 (UTC)
@Jeff G.: you linked a nonexistent en-wiki page here. Did you mean to link something else? - Jmabel ! talk 18:17, 6 December 2024 (UTC)
@Jmabel: No, that page title was implicated in the abuse filter log entry, and the character of that (draft offline) page was implicated in both that and the original post above.   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 19:22, 6 December 2024 (UTC)
Interesting, because I can see as an en-wiki admin that the page has never existed. - Jmabel ! talk 19:27, 6 December 2024 (UTC)
Perhaps I read too much into the word "profile" in "profile pic". Or perhaps the user got the hint.   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 19:43, 6 December 2024 (UTC)
Maybe "uploaded while editing (pagename)" includes the cases when a user edits a "page" before publishing it for the first time? Then that information gets recorded in the filter log details even if in the end the user does not publish the page. -- Asclepias (talk) 19:56, 6 December 2024 (UTC)

@Fonmonica: This is a nearly new account; that's an unusual thing for a new user to be doing. What is the gallery you were trying to create?
Filter 257 is intended to prevent certain recurring attempts by certain long-term abusers of Commons to create certain types of pages. If your intentions were good, this could well be a false positive. It looks like this filter is maintained by Elcobbola, who may be able to tell you more. - Jmabel ! talk 23:47, 5 December 2024 (UTC)

Cities in New York (state) by year

Some other user has created categories for the cities of Long Beach, New York, Utica, New York and Yonkers, New York by specific years. Unfortunately, there seems to be no way to move these categories into alphabetical order. In the Category:2021 in New York (state) by city, for example, every other city is in alphabetical order. How can we fix this issue? --DanTD (talk) 12:42, 3 December 2024 (UTC)

@DanTD: I'd have expected https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Template:Yonkers_NY_year&diff=prev&oldid=965335666 to fix it for Yonkers, but if it does there is a caching issue and it will take time to percolate. If it doesn't I'd also like to understand why. Anyway, that step was certainly necessary, even if not sufficient. - Jmabel ! talk 19:46, 3 December 2024 (UTC)
@Jmabel: did similar for Long Beach. Abzeronow (talk) 19:49, 3 December 2024 (UTC)
@Abzeronow: And I just did something similar for Utica, and I got the same lack of results. I could've swore there was a fourth city category that needed this fix. --DanTD (talk) 00:03, 4 December 2024 (UTC)
@DanTD: It was a caching issue. I just did a null edit on the three that weren't correct, and it looks right now. -- Auntof6 (talk) 08:28, 8 December 2024 (UTC)
@Auntof6: I did too, but it didn't work. And every other year is still the same. ----DanTD (talk) 12:07, 8 December 2024 (UTC)
@DanTD: Maybe we're looking at different things? I did the null edits on these:
After that, they appeared in alphabetical order in Category:2021 in New York (state) by city. I spot-checked other "<year> in New York (state) by city" categories, and all the subcats were in alpha order. Is caching different or separate for each user? -- Auntof6 (talk) 12:46, 8 December 2024 (UTC)
@Auntof6: Actually, after I posted that reply, I realized what you did. You carried out those null edits on each individual category. I did it on the main category. So I did it on the individual categories and it did work that time. --DanTD (talk) 12:50, 8 December 2024 (UTC)

Hadley Airfield

Hadley Airfield was not in New Brunswick. I grew up on TEXAS AVE in South Plainfield. Hadley was my next door neighbor which put Hadley in South Plainfield, New Jersey, Hamilton Blvd. There was a big field between us, but nothing was on it but dead grass. My father was a pilot. He didn't fly Hadley's planes, but he did fly bi-planes. I have a picture somewhere of him stepping up onto the wing. His goggles and helmit, I think my brother has possession of them. I was soooooo sad to see a hotel there and Hadley gone, torn down. A lot of history was made in So. Plainfield by Hadley. That area sure has changed. My Grandparents live across the street on Texas Ave, originally UNION AVE. My Great-grandmother was the original owner of that property. She got it for $5.00 down and $1.00 a month, with only a daughter, who became my Grandma, when she married Frank DeFellipo. To fly commercial, Dad moved us to New Hampshire shortly after Grandpa died. I made trips to Grandma house When I grew up. We have to accept change and some times it is sad. Such is life. 24.91.21.65 07:22, 8 December 2024 (UTC)

Is there something you need help with? -- Auntof6 (talk) 07:57, 8 December 2024 (UTC)

How to upload modified version of Commons file by another user as a separate file?

I want to upload a modified version of File:Schaumankyltti.jpg as a separate file but am unsure how to go about it. I think the original version of the file has too much empty space around the plaque and the plaque itself is too dark in the image. I have made a modified version, but how do I upload it as a separate file as I don't want to replace the original file? I also don't want to choose "It's entirely my own work" on the Upload form as this is obviously not entirely my own work. I haven't even been inside the Government Palace myself. I uploaded a new file File:Schaumankyltti (edited).jpg, originally using "It's entirely my own work", then replaced the entire contents of the page (not the file) with that from the original file, and then used the templates "Extracted from" and "Image extracted" on the two files. JIP (talk) 17:12, 8 December 2024 (UTC)
@JIP: Thanks, that looks a lot better, but it reminds me that flash photography and shiny flat surfaces shot and illuminated head-on do not mix well due to reflection of the flash; oblique lighting is better in such circumstances.   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 17:25, 8 December 2024 (UTC)

OpenRefine Upload to Wikimedia Commons failing without notice (abuse filter triggered?)

I have the same issue as discussed here in 2023: https://forum.openrefine.org/t/no-errors-reported-and-the-percentage-completed-went-through-but-no-upload-done/899/6 but couldn't find a more updated answer from previously asked questions here.

I have prepared a test set of 5 images for a collection holding NGO with OpenRefine (Permalink), merging their data entry policies with Wikimedia Commons best practices (mainly from here: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:OpenRefine/Uploading_files_with_OpenRefine). In a first technical test a couple of weeks ago, the same files have been successfully uploaded with my user account despite not being modeled remotely up to code. I think this time around, I have triggered some kind of abuse filter, but I cannot find any log or hint as to what the issue might have been.

Since we use the Wikimedia Commons upload as part of our Wikibase Cloud instance, I really need to resolve this issue. Any tips on where I can find hints about the problem with Wikimedia Commons? Or any suggestions what I might have done wrong in OpenRefine? Esxx24 (talk) 22:44, 9 December 2024 (UTC)

@Esxx24: The only things in the public filters log of your account are two rather inconsequential notes, that have nothing to do with uploads and not disallowing anything. By comparison, the other user, in the 2023 discussion to which you refer, had repeatedly triggered three filters actually disallowing uploads for several reasons [2]. At least, that means the problem may not be the same. You can ask your question also at Commons:Village pump/Technical for maybe better chances of receiving a technical answer there. -- Asclepias (talk) 03:29, 10 December 2024 (UTC)

@MennNath: File:Men Nath.jpg appears at https://cwcicambodia.net/2017/08/09/men-nath-biography/, published in 2017, but was uploaded to Commons in 2021. Because it had been previously published, and the license is not indicated at the site of prior publication, any upload should have gone through the process described at COM:VRT. If you legitimately own the copyright to this photo, you can do that now to get it undeleted. However, you appear to be the subject of the photo, so unless it is a selfie, copyright would normally remain with the photographer, unless it was explicitly transferred. If someone else took the photo and didn't transfer the copyright, it is their permission we would need rather than yours, and they, not you, should be credited as author.
Also: what is the relation of this account to User:Mèn Nath? Are you the same person? If so, why two accounts? - Jmabel ! talk 15:56, 10 December 2024 (UTC)

@Kparkwc: File:Bamboo Rhizome 02.jpg is licensed with {{Cc-by-sa-3.0}}, so if you conform to the terms of that license (which the above almost does: you should probably also include the link https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/deed.en to make it clear what the license terms are, which appears to be a requirement of that license) you do not need any further permission from the author.

How to effectively use search - example given

I'm helping to build the set for an amateur showing of w:en:Little Shop of Horrors (musical), set in about 1960 in poor areas in an unnamed US city, centering around a flower shop. How can I use the search function to effectively find the right categories to ensure an accurate and interesting set design? I'm willing to learn how to use w:en:Wikipedia:PetScan to quickly navigate subcategories of images.

Already, I've found and made use of Category:Shops in the 1950s, and I've searched through Category:1950s posters for design inspiration as well. Cheers. LR.127 (talk) 20:17, 10 December 2024 (UTC)

You might also get ideas from Category:Flower shops and categories for neighborhoods that might fit your criteria. Category:Poverty in the United States might be of use, but I don't imagine you'll have much use for Category:Audrey (given name). Happy hunting! - Jmabel ! talk 20:49, 10 December 2024 (UTC)

What to do with thousands of bot copyvios ?

In short: What is the best method to request speedy deletion of thousands of copyvios uploaded by a bot?

Context: This deletion request requests deletion of all files in a category of 107 copyvios (107 non-free photos by professional photographer Daniel Cande) uploaded to Commons by a bot Gzen92Bot. The photos are obviously not free at the source. (And that was also already known from previous discussions). Looking at more uploads by that bot, it can be seen that it systematically inserts false claims of CC0 on almost everything it uploads. Sometimes, it falsely tags CC0 files that are public domain by expiration of copyright, which is already bad behaviour but at least it's not too damaging. Often, it falsely tags CC0 files that are not free, which is much worse and potentially much more damaging.

Size of the problem: Searching only for photos by the same professional photographer Daniel Cande, it can be found that the bot created hundreds of categories and uploaded probably tens of thousands of non-free photos by that photographer. It can be expected that looking at more uploads of that bot thousands more copyvios of non-free works by other authors might be found.

Suggestions?: What could be the best practical method to speedy delete those thousands of bot copyvios? Placing copyvio tags on tens of thousands of files, flooding the speedy deletion maintenance category, may not be the most practical method. Another method could be starting a series of hundreds of mass deletion requests, for example each listing the files in one category. But considering the size of the problem, even formatting one or two such mass deletion requests every day, that could take practically a whole year to go through all of it. Also, deletion requests can sometimes wait several months before an administrator closes them, which is not practical for copyvios that should be speedy deleted. Another idea could be to simply notify the problem on the Administrators' noticeboard and let them deal with it as they want. Any other suggestions?

-- Asclepias (talk) 18:35, 7 December 2024 (UTC)

@Asclepias: Given that they are in a category, it is easy for admins to do a mass delete with VFC, especially easy if there is nothing else in the category. Sounds, though, like the more immediate problem is to stop the bot in question from digging an even deeper hole. - Jmabel ! talk 06:20, 8 December 2024 (UTC)

History of licensing should be checked. Gallica released some files in the public domain, and later changed the license. Once released in the public domain, they will stay this way. Yann (talk) 18:13, 8 December 2024 (UTC)
I checked "Le nouveau testament" these via archive.org, and they were under the same conditions in the earliest record (2022), so I deleted these. By the same photographer, and under the same conditions, there is Category:La Cenerentola, musique de Gioachino Rossini - photographies - Daniel Cande - btv1b9082182b. Yann (talk) 18:37, 8 December 2024 (UTC)
From discussions in 2012 and 2013, it seems likely that the photos by Daniel Cande were indeed noted "domaine public" on Gallica at that time. They were probably noted like that until circa the mid-2010s. However, it does not matter that Gallica had ever placed or not public domain notices on those photos on which it never had the right to do so. The matter was examined in this DR in 2017 (if one goes to the essential and skips the secondary discussions that take most of the page). So, it's not necessary to search the internet archives in cases like that. Searching Commons, there are hundreds of categories with photos by the same photographer uploaded by the same bot recently. -- Asclepias (talk) 21:57, 8 December 2024 (UTC)
When we have proof (license review or Internet Archive) that the files were released to the public domain, I don't see any reason to delete them. Yann (talk) 09:03, 9 December 2024 (UTC)
Although that is not necessary for a large number of uploads by that bot. Through previous discussions, Commons has developed a reasonable knowledge and consensus about the actual copyright status of many Gallica fonds. It is established that Gallica or BNF cannot release in the public domain works on which it never had any rights (other than a limited permission to simply display those works on its website). That is the case, for example, for the photos by Daniel Cande, that the bot has uploaded to Commons by the thousands and grouped into some 350 categories. It's the same thing with photos by Joël Verhoustraeten, grouped into some 100 categories. It does not matter if Gallica had ever placed or not a public domain notice on works on which it never had the right to do so. Therefore, there is no reason to delay the speedy deletion of such known copyvios, which should be deleted ASAP. By contrast, works that Commons has established might have been validly released to the public domain by Gallica at some point in the past are, for example, photos by Roger Pic, because that photographer ceded his rights to BNF. The bot grouped them in some 350 categories. I would rather keep the photos by Roger Pic, but the difficulty for them might be to prove if they had public domain notices, now some ten years after the removal of those notices from Gallica. It can be noted that apparently the bot started to mass upload Gallica files to Commons after Gallica had already removed most such public domain notices from its pages. They were not CC0 anyway. The bot operator said that there are still inconsistencies between the present non-free notices and some technical parameter, but he should check the notices and should get familiar with past discussions on this subject and with the public domain tags of Commons and understand what CC0 is before launching the bot on mass uploads. -- Asclepias (talk) 21:05, 8 December 2024 (UTC)
Hello, the API https://api.bnf.fr/api-gallica-de-recherche used parameter "access", "fayes" = public domain. But yes, sometimes it's not the case. I have already modified the code to use the field "dc.rights" ("restricted use (convention BnF-ADM-xxxx-xxxxxx-xx)") in API returns. I will list all these cases quickly. Gzen92 (talk) 07:28, 9 December 2024 (UTC)
@Asclepias: The BNF did acquire the copyright of several photographers, including Daniel Cande. That is specifically mentioned in the DR you linked above with a reference. Yann (talk) 09:06, 9 December 2024 (UTC)
There is 1648 files and 2793 categories with "restricted use". Gzen92 (talk) 12:38, 9 December 2024 (UTC)
What corrective actions can I take to correct all other files? The date of the work is not sufficient and often the author is not indicated. Gzen92 (talk) 15:56, 11 December 2024 (UTC)

RUEGO ELIMINEN EL ESCUDO QUE HAN PUESTO EN WIKIPEDIA REFERIDO A TORREGAMONES, NO ES EL ESCUDO ORIGINARIO CREADO EN 2010. YA EXISTE UN ESCUDO APROBADO Y PUBLICADO OFICIALMENTE. GRACIAS ANBALICARION (talk) 21:46, 10 December 2024 (UTC)

Paraphrase: user is complaining that the coat of arms (escudo) in es:Torregamones is "not the original created in 2010".
Presumably it is an issue take up in es-wiki: Commons does not usually try to make determinations as to what version of a coat of arms is preferred, and certainly cannot tell es-wiki to change it. - Jmabel ! talk 07:22, 11 December 2024 (UTC)
@ANBALICARION: Hola.
1. As explained by Usuario:Marcelo on your talk page at es.wikipedia, any image of an escudo is correct as long as it is conform to the text of the blazon.
2. The decision to use an image on es.wikipedia is a decision by the users at es.wikipedia. You can discuss that matter with other users on the talk page of the article at es:Discusión:Torregamones.
3. On Commons, you placed the .png copy of your image under the CC BY-SA 4.0 license, but you released the .webm copy of the same image to the public domain with a CC0 dedication. And the .jpg of the same image at ayuntamiento.es is all rights reserved under the legal terms of that website. That all seems somewhat contradictory.
4. It is quite possible that you are D.A.B.L. as you apparently claim to be. If so, still, to help keep the files on Commons, it might be useful that you provide evidence (see Commons:VRT/es) that you are that person, and that you personally drew that particular digital drawing (the particular image of the .jpg, .png and .webm), and clarify who owns (or owned) the copyright on that particular drawing and what is its actual copyright status.

Any alternatives to Flickr?

Hi! I have been searching for an image (to put on Wikipedia), searching both Wikimedia Commons and Flickr. I have not yet found what I am looking for and I’ve used multiple search terms searched to the end of results, so I presume it is not on these sites. I am wondering if there are other free image sites I could browse besides Flickr that I could submit one of its images to Wikimedia Commons or Wikipedia if I find it there (with similar copyright tags that are compatible with use on Wikipedia/Wikipedia Commons).

Thank you,

Help with using an image from French Wikipedia on English wiki

Hi,

I am wondering if someone could help me with translating an image from the French version of Wikipedia:Verdun Auditorium this is located in the “histoire” section of the French site and it’s the first one displayed.

If Someone could provide me some guidance, that would be amazing!

Thank you! Gojetsgo55 (talk) 02:14, 12 December 2024 (UTC)

@Gojetsgo55: I'm not sure what you mean by "translating an image." I don't see anything there with text as part of the image. If that was just a false cognate from another language (e.g. Spanish trasladar, "to move"), and you just mean you want to use File:Construction de l Auditorium de Verdun.jpg in the English-language Wikipedia, that image is already here on Commons, and you can use in en-wiki it exactly as you would use any other image on Commons. - Jmabel ! talk 03:49, 12 December 2024 (UTC)

upload a photo to a page

I am new to Wikipedia, so I have many doubts. In this case, I want to create a new page, and I would like to illustrate it with an old photograph, which no longer has any copyright protection. How can I proceed to place it, and why the platform does not allow me to upload it? Clodomiro Picado (talk) 07:34, 12 December 2024 (UTC)

@Clodomiro Picado: you triggered an automated filter that stops new users from uploading small resolution images using cross-wiki upload. That said, are you certain that the image is no longer copyrighted? Based on Special:AbuseLog/11117078 this is an image from 1957. That may or may not be copyrighted, depending on country. Also, you have claimed that this image is your own personal work (ie. you held the camera), that it is actually taken in 2024 and the description reads just "h". You can't claim that for on old picture. MKFI (talk) 08:02, 12 December 2024 (UTC)

You can always add a subsection by directly editing the Wikitext instead of using the WYSIWYG editor. Is it acceptable to upload this?

So after the fall of the Assad regime in Syria, a prison has been raided by the Syrian people and that prison is Sednaya Prison which is notorious for torturing prisoners.

And there was a video recorded by one of the guards that was found on one of the mobile phones left around, the video captured one of the guards slapping and belittling a prisoner and saying to him in Arabic "You want freedom eh?" multiple times. I feel like that video might be historically significant, would it be acceptable to upload here? GnikehtCommons (talk) 13:46, 11 December 2024 (UTC)

Uploading Images and using

Hello,

I have been having a problem recently. When I try to upload an image that I have taken myself, to an article, it doesn't seem to fully upload. It just takes me back to the add media page. Then I try again and it says that the file already exists and I cannot use it. It's in Wikimedia commons when I search it but I am still not allowed to use it. Could you tell me why this is happening and how I figure out my issue?

@AndrewDeAngelo: do I understand that you are using a cross-wiki uploader from the English-language Wikipedia (or possibly another Wikipedia)?
"I am … not allowed to use it" is unclear. Are you somehow being prevented from editing the Wikitext and adding it that way?
In any case, if the image is making it successfully to Commons, it sounds like this is mostly a question for the English-language Wikipedia (or wherever else you are having this problem). - Jmabel ! talk 20:07, 11 December 2024 (UTC)
Hi @Jmabel no, I went in to edit an article on English wiki and add a picture and when I tried to upload it there, it just kept reverting back to there being no image successfully uploaded. " am not allowed to use it": I then went to the Commons and the picture appeared there but I could still not utilize it in the article that I wanted to. It is a picture I took on my own phone and was not copied or taken from anywhere. AndrewDeAngelo (talk) 15:54, 13 December 2024 (UTC)
@AndrewDeAngelo: Once an image is uploaded to Commons, a second copy of it must not be uploaded to Wikipedia. So it's a good thing if Wikipedia did not allow the upload of a duplicate. An image is not to be uploaded to an article, instead it can be displayed in an article. You can review the help pages on Wikipedia about displaying thumbnails, remembering that galleries and infobox pictures can have a different syntax. -- Asclepias (talk) 18:07, 13 December 2024 (UTC)

Uploading an image from a university work

Hi, as the title says, am I allowed to upload and use an image from a university work ? As the work is published freely on the net I'm not really sure if it's allowed or not.

Thanks in advance Martinlievre (talk) 20:01, 11 December 2024 (UTC)

@Martinlievre: neither "a university work" nor "published freely on the net" give any clue to the answer.
Commons accepts only material that is either in the public domain or free-licensed. Be aware that this is less that 5% of what you will find on the Internet. If you don't know how to determine whether a particular image qualifies, please provide a URL and whatever else would be needed (figure number, etc.) for someone to find the image in question and try to give you an answer. That will work much better than any effort to describe the image. - Jmabel ! talk 20:11, 11 December 2024 (UTC)

I want to add some photos of Gayatri Devi in their Wikipedia article because currently this article don’t have any pics of her. Photos are available on Charan Singh Archives see this. I have mailed the archives and i have talked to the chairman that i require photos for her wikipedia article and they mailed me that i can use these photos for Wikipedia and they send me 5 to 6 photos of her in full resolution through G drive. TheSlumPanda (talk) 19:11, 12 December 2024 (UTC)

@TheSlumPanda There is no "you can use this for Wikipedia" alternative. You need to show that the pics are released under a Commons:Licensing#Well-known_licenses. That's assuming they don't fall under COM:PD. If you are in contact with the copyright holder, you can point them to Commons:Volunteer_Response_Team#Declaration_of_consent_for_all_enquiries. Your link states "All rights reserved. Copyright © 2024 Charan Singh Archives", that's very clear for Commons-purposes.
For en-WP purposes, since she's dead, you can pick one pic to be the leadimage and upload it as "Upload a non-free file" at Wikipedia:File upload wizard, but if "free" ones should appear, the non-free will be deleted from en-WP. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 20:18, 12 December 2024 (UTC)

Granger claims to own the copyright, though, and we would need to disprove that for the photo to be acceptable here.

Why isn't this image of Schlecht in public domain if the person in picture died in 1918? ExclusiveEditor (talk) 18:16, 13 December 2024 (UTC)

@ExclusiveEditor: The first upload was to nl.wikipedia. You could try to ask administrators there to look at the page history to know who attributed to this file a OTRS template on nl.wikipedia before it was transferred to Commons. However, the other version of the image, apparently first uploaded to en.wikipedia under the filename Schlechter.png, is tagged as public domain with PD-old, possibly incorrectly since the author is not identified nor the place and year of first publication. If the image is from circa 1910, it does not meet the condition of PD-old-assumed. Given that it is sourced from a website by a person with a name similar to the name under "author" in File:Schlecht.jpg, it is possible to hypothesize that the OTRS communication came from that person, who might have meant to say that he agreed to the use of the image. It might be copyfraud, maybe involuntarily. You can ask at Commons:VRT/Noticeboard about ticket 2007040710018191 to know what it might have said. You could try to research the origin of the image or its early publications. -- Asclepias (talk) 19:20, 13 December 2024 (UTC)

How can I add proof of permission to upload image? I have written permission from the photographer

Hello, I have written permission from a professional photographer to upload an image of a musician. I am not sure how to add this information in and the image is being contested:

"File:Dego, Marc and Ian of 4hero in Dollis Hill Reinforced studio by photographer Mark Alesky.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests"

I do not know the photographer but I contacted them to see if they would be ok with me uploading the image and they have said yes as long as there are credits provided. I&I22 (talk) 12:56, 15 December 2024 (UTC)

Undeletion request problem

Hi all, I have a question regarding a failed undeletion request discussion. I try to link it: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Undeletion_requests/Archive/2024-12, point 57. I think I missed the timeframe where I could engage in the discussion and no commentator/administrator saw a further clarification I did, and I tried to text/reply to them directly but it was not possible anymore.

My last edit (that maybe no one saw) was the following: "To Jim, KoH and Yann - I hope this is right to edit here (and sorry for the missed hyperlinks). Yes for photographs deleted: the photographers for the artist portraits were family (and I sourced the photos from them and have publications rights), should I maybe just request a written statement from remaining family and provide it to Wikimedia then? Same goes for the Scans (my own Scans): it was a collection of newspaper entrys that were published at the respective time of the creation of the artwork, I sourced the collected newspaper parts from the artist family (and could provide a statement for that, too). The newspaper publisher does not exist anymore, but I could request a statement from the city that these newspapers once existed and the artworks were published at that time (1920s and 30s). Does that explain the context and does that work then?."

For anybody better versed with Wikimedia than me: do I post again with my same request on the undeletion page now? Or do I still reach out to any of my commentators instead? Or is there now a new other page/section I have to take things to with my request?

Any help or hint is appreciated, since I am unfamiliar with the process and what steps to take. Thank you! ArtWriter22 (talk) 13:41, 16 December 2024 (UTC)

@ArtWriter22: The numbering will change continually, so "point 57" is useless. This is Commons:Undeletion_requests/Archive/2024-12#Undelestion Request for several Files; given that its already archived, that link should stay good. Reference that if you need to refer to this discussion elsewhere.
It looks to me like you were asked, " For each image, can you provide a list of authors, when they died, and when the work was published? If it's a photo of a person, the sole author is the photographer. If it's a photo of a 2D artwork, the sole author is the artist. If it's a photo of a 3D artwork, both the artist and photographer are authors." It doesn't look like you provided any specific answers (and the only answer you gave was after the UDR had closed).
I'd suggest that any further undeletion requests each be for a specific image, with the required information (or for a group of images where this information is identical across the set). I'd also strongly suggest trying to do at least the first few one-at-a-time, so you don't end up needing to do the same back-and-forth repeatedly, and learn what is needed.
A copyright owned by a newspaper would not be extinguished just because the newspaper went out of business. There is always some successor entity, though it may be difficult to identify, and the work may be effectively orphaned. However, I looked through about half a dozen of these and didn't see anywhere that a newspaper made any contribution to intellectual property. I might have missed something with a file I didn't look at, but just faithfully copying a 2-dimensional work does not create any new intellectual property.
It looks like you claimed own work on work where you were not the artist, but might be the artist's heir. If you are the heir to the intellectual property, you would need to (1) credit the correct author (not {{Own}}) and use (for example) {{Cc-by-sa-4.0-heirs}} rather than {{Cc-by-sa-4.0}}. Similarly, for an accurate reproduction of a 2-dimensional work, the date should be the date of the work, not of the upload, scan, etc. If you need to distinguish the photo from the underlying work, you have to do something like what I did at File:Bust of Cecilia Cuțescu-Storck by Frederic Storck (1909) - 01.jpg.
I'd also recommend in the future that you use mnemonic file names. File:Scanner-23012514302.jpg gives no one any idea what is the subject matter of the file.
I hope some of that is useful to you. - Jmabel ! talk 22:14, 16 December 2024 (UTC)
@ArtWriter22: Hi, and welcome. In addition to what Jmabel wrote, "I did not put a hyperlink to the files since they only lead to the wikimedia page where it states that the file is deleted" is exactly the wrong way to go about things; Admins need the links to restore the files. Since that section is closed, statements of the living family members (including yourself), newspaper photographers, and newspaper managers who may hold or may have inherited the rights to those photos including info about the photographers' lifetimes, the photos' publication dates, and the countries should be sent via VRT. There also may be heirs, successors, or assigns for the defunct newspapers, or even for the people. You may put the information about publication, lifetimes, and countries here. Please also use internal links.   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 11:35, 17 December 2024 (UTC)
@Jeff G. and ArtWriter22: again, I don't think there is anything here where newspapers would have held relevant copyrights; they seem simply to have been reproducing artworks. - Jmabel ! talk 18:38, 17 December 2024 (UTC)
@Jmabel: My impression is that if a newspaper published a photo of an otherwise private (unpublished) artwork, in certain non-pma jurisdictions the photographer or newspaper would hold copyright to that photo.   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 11:39, 19 December 2024 (UTC)
  • @Jeff G.: That seems a bit bizarre (not necessarily wrong, just bizarre). Do you have any reference for that? Did that lose the original artist any ability to later file for copyright? I can think of all sorts of weird consequences of that. - Jmabel ! talk 20:19, 19 December 2024 (UTC)
To what you Jeff G. and you Jmable discuss, I will for now make a note of this and try get to the bottom of things, I am not a heir to the artworks but am in contact with those people and other relevant people that have rights pertaining to/have done research regarding the relevant artists.
The way I currently see this I can produce solid background research/references/licences for most of the images, and if some of them can't be licensed properly and are then eventually not publishable on Wiki it is also not the end of the world! Thank you both for your insights and help! ArtWriter22 (talk) 18:02, 19 December 2024 (UTC)
Thank you so much this was very helpful! I will do the steps that you suggested and take the time to go bit by bit! ArtWriter22 (talk) 17:57, 19 December 2024 (UTC)

I’m not sure this is the right place to ask, but could anyone who’s able to edit SVG files change the white elements of this image to black and upload a new version of it? Against the light background of infoboxes it can barely be distinguished, and against the default white background of Wikimedia pages in general it disappears almost entirely. Thanks in advance! Art catalog page

Hi, I created the page 'Michael Sweerts catalogue raisonné, 1996 Kultzen' in my user space, then tried moving it to Commons main space, but the result had an unexpected prefix: Commons:Michael Sweerts catalogue raisonné, 1996 Kultzen. The model I looked at, Pieter Bruegel (I) catalogue raisonné, 2007 Sellink, doesn't have this. Not sure how to proceed from here. Can anyone advise? Thanks, Karmakolle (talk) 18:31, 14 December 2024 (UTC)

Think I found it: created Michael Sweerts catalogue raisonné, 1996 Kultzen and nominated Commons:Michael Sweerts catalogue raisonné, 1996 Kultzen for speedy deletion. Do let me know if something is still off! Karmakolle (talk) 19:10, 14 December 2024 (UTC)
@Karmakolle: It should be ok. Maybe you had moved the page to the Commons namespace inadvertently instead of to the main namespace. The difference between the move and the creation of the new page is that the history list of contributions to your draft has been removed when you deleted the Commons page. Depends if you wanted to keep that or not, but probably not, I suppose. The redirection page "User:Karmakolle/Michael Sweerts catalogue raisonné, 1996 Kultzen" is probably not useful either, you could delete it also. -- Asclepias (talk) 19:59, 14 December 2024 (UTC)

A lot of duplicates

A lot (if not all) of the files in this category (uploaded in 2022): Category:Collectie glasplaatnegatieven Den Helder 1905-1940 RAA and it's subcategory are duplicates of files already uploaded. I believe all of the older files (uploaded 2018) are in this category: Category:Media from Regionaal Archief Alkmaar. I asked the uploader on her talk page but got no response (yet). There are over 600 400 files and I don't want to put a duplicate template on each and everyone of them by hand. Can this be fixed automatically somehow? Also I don't know which ones (the 2018 or the 2022 files) should be kept as the latter are just slightly larger files.

Edit: Also, I did a lot of categorization on those older files, I hope that's not going to get lost. --Larshei (talk) 15:28, 15 December 2024 (UTC)

Naming convention of geochronological categories

Hey, I have a question: I noticed that for the of the geochronological unit categories, there seems to be a regular category and a "stratigraphic" category (e.g., Category:Cretaceous would be the regular one while Category:Cretaceous System would be the stratigraphic one), and wondered if the content of these two categories should be placed in one category instead.

Now, I understand that while geochronology and stratigraphy are "equal" to each other, they're not exactly the same; geochronology refers to non-visitable periods of time, while stratigraphy refers to visitable rock formations that refer to certain points in time. Still, it feels like files in the stratigraphic categories (which end in Eonothem, Erathem, System, Series, or Stage) aren't covered as much when they're split in two like that. So I'm asking, can I can unify the appropriate pairs of categories under the geochronological name (using the naming convention of example category above compared to its stratigraphic counterpart) should I find instances of them? — Alex26337 (talk) 18:15, 15 December 2024 (UTC)

Can the 1929 film "The Skeleton Dance" be added as a file on this site?

The film was made in 1929 and will enter the public domain on January 1, 2025. Steamboat Willie was added as a file on December 8, a few weeks before it entered public domain. This is my own bio (I wrote it) and the photo was taken by a professional photographer. This photo has been used on many websites such as Linkedin and AAPOS.org. Kindly clarify the reason for the rejection ("Commons: Deletion") and advise on what remedy is needed. My professional email address is: [SUPPRESSED] and my personal email address is: [SUPPRESSED] Phone number: [SUPPRESSED]. Talloaks2024 (talk) 23:30, 15 December 2024 (UTC)

@Talloaks2024: please never post your email address or phone number publicly on Commons.
  1. There are almost no circumstances where it is OK to write about yourself on any Wikimedia project (one of the few exceptions is brief autobiographical remarks by active contributors on their user talk page.)
  2. Commons does not host articles.
  3. Wikipedia does not accept articles in PDF form.
  4. Previously published photos can only be accepted on Commons if they are (1) in COM:SCOPE (this appears not to be) and (2) prior publication shows a free license that clearly comes from the copyright holder (typically the photographer) or the copyright-holder has gone through the process defined at COM:VRT (again, not the case here).
There might be additional reasons, but this is overdetermined. - Jmabel ! talk 03:14, 16 December 2024 (UTC)

Is it fine to have a separate account for moving images from Flickr?

I have found an openly licensed set of images from trustworthy source on Flickr. Is it fine to upload them using https://flickr2commons.toolforge.org/#/ from a separate account (this one)

I want to do this as previously I also imported relatively large number of photos from Flickr, what made finding photos I took myself in my upload list much harder.

Is such solution (two separate accounts) fine? Or is it forbidden?

https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Requests_for_checkuser links to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Sockpuppetry and mentions "abuse of multiple accounts" so presumably some use is fine.

I am not blocked, banned or restricted on Wikimedia Commons.

You can have as many accounts as you want providing that you disclose that they are your accounts. Ruslik (talk) 19:21, 16 December 2024 (UTC)
And as long as you make sure that (for example) you never use both accounts in the same vote, etc. It's usually wise to consider one your "main account" and to use only that one in discussions, etc. Keep the other(s) to being single-purpose. - Jmabel ! talk 21:55, 16 December 2024 (UTC)

@Ronenfe: There's nothing here about a "separate account." You have no prior edits on Commons, and we don't generally give people the open-ended ability to overwrite images here until they specifically have a fair amount of Commons experience, because even experienced Wikipedians often don't understand COM:OVERWRITE.
As far as I can see, neither you nor Jeff G. say what file this was about, so I can't move this forward at all without further information. The real upshot of his message is in the last sentence: "You may also request an exception for a particular file at COM:OWR." So that would be where to ask permission to overwrite one particular file. - Jmabel ! talk 18:17, 20 December 2024 (UTC)

Wrongly named Manhattanhenge image file

File:Manhattanhenge 42 st.jpg clearly does not show 42nd Street in Manhattan:

1) Street and sidewalks are much too narrow for this to be 42nd St.

2) There is street parking, which is not permitted on 42nd St.

3) All cars point in the same direction — 42nd St. runs in both directions.

Here are two pictures of 42nd St. for comparison, File:MTA New York City Bus 6734 at 42nd Street and Madison Avenue.jpeg and File:42nd Street, from Park Avenue looking west, Manhattan, New York.jpg

Is there a way to rename the file to something more appropriate such as "Manhattanhenge 2008", as per the original poster's description?

Thanks! Peter NYC (talk) 17:47, 21 December 2024 (UTC)

@Peter NYC: You can click "Move" to propose renaming any file. Since you don't have filemover privileges, what that will do is to fill out {{Rename}} and add it to the page for a filemover to follow through. Or you can use {{Rename}} directly, but I think "Move" guides you through the process better. - Jmabel ! talk 18:16, 21 December 2024 (UTC)

Insufficient permissions

The history of File:Mater Christi College, Belgrave.jpg will show that as recently as July '23 I was overwriting files uploaded by others. I like to think that this was constructive. Today, my attempt to replace the horribly dark File:May-Li Khoe and Federico Ardila.jpg with a GIMP-improved derivative got me the response "File overwriting not allowed / You attempted to overwrite a file that was not initially uploaded by you. @Hoary: See the second paragraph of the introduction of Commons:Overwriting existing files. -- Asclepias (talk) 02:01, 17 December 2024 (UTC)
Ah! Got it, Asclepias. So I'd have to be an autopatroller, something this says is for users "who create a high level of quality pages or uploads that do not require patrolling by other users" and also those "who make a large amount of good edits that do not need to be patrolled". If "a high level" means "a high quantity", that's most definitely not me; if it instead means"a high percentage", that, I hope, would include me. -- Hoary (talk) 02:50, 17 December 2024 (UTC)
@Hoary: I'd say you're a little shy of the number of edits we'd usually want for autopatroller, but I can also see that you've done a lot of good work, including nominating a lot of copyvios for deletion. I'd support you if you want to nominate yourself for autopatroller; let me know. - Jmabel ! talk 03:58, 17 December 2024 (UTC)

I can’t upload an audio file in commons without it telling me it’s unconstructive

When I try to upload the East German anthem, unconstructive, when I try to upload a better version of the Chechen anthem, unconstructive, when I try to upload the current Afghan anthem, unconstructive. What to do? Datawikiperson (talk) 09:08, 17 December 2024 (UTC)

It's the working of Special:AbuseFilter/192. Regards, Grand-Duc (talk) 09:19, 17 December 2024 (UTC)
@Datawikiperson: Hi, and welcome. I am sorry to inform you that you have triggered Special:AbuseFilter/192 by trying to upload an mp3 file with insufficient rights. Too many people try to upload audio files that are still copyrighted by the authors, performers, recorders, publishing companies, etc. without proper licenses from those people. Please document fully the sources and licenses of your audio uploads, and request Autopatrol group membership at COM:RFR when you think you are ready (once you have made more than 500 useful non-botlike edits); having that should allow you to upload mp3 files. In the meantime, please reencode that and other audio into Vorbis or Opus and upload them with full documentation as .ogg files.   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 11:44, 17 December 2024 (UTC)

@Datawikiperson: What source, and what claim there exactly?   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 13:50, 17 December 2024 (UTC)
A website called nationalanthems.info and it says “ We encourage people to use the information on this site in other works so that the knowledge of national anthems can be shared beyond the scope of this site. The site is licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International). We would prefer, if at all possible, that nationalanthems.info be credited as the source of information used from the site, and a link be provided to nationalanthems.info. This license, however, does not extend to any music file marked as © copyrighted to any person or entity, they retain the copyright and that information cannot be used by others without obtaining permission from them first. (Currently, the only music file marked as such is that of St. Barthélemy.)
Also keep in mind that if you wish to contribute information or files to the site that, unless you state otherwise, they must be able to be shared under the same license as well.” Have a great day! Datawikiperson (talk) 16:22, 17 December 2024 (UTC)
Generally, we'd like for those who upload mp3 files to understand the complexities of copyright of sound recordings because it's an area that so many get wrong. Abzeronow (talk) 17:33, 17 December 2024 (UTC)
@Datawikiperson: if you would provide links to the pages containing the relevant MP3s, I imagine someone here can follow through with uploading, if it is OK to do so. Question on the DDR national anthem, though: Hanns Eisler lived until 1962, wouldn't that anthem be copyrighted through 2032? Is there some particular German law waiving copyright because it was a national anthem? Similar question on the Chechen anthem, though in that case I personally know nothing about its authorship or about the relevant (presumably Russian) copyright law.
Complexities like that are exactly why we generally limit MP3 uploads to people who have done a fair amount of work here without getting in trouble: there are far more pitfalls for recordings than for images. - Jmabel ! talk 18:45, 17 December 2024 (UTC)

Category Mapping for Bulgarian Postcards Upload

The Varna Public Library has a collection of ~130 historic postcards by Grigor Paskov, depicting noteworthy places in Bulgaria (example item). These will enter the public domain in a couple of weeks, and I am preparing them for batch upload to Wikimedia Commons.

The library catalog includes subject metadata in Bulgarian, and I am trying to map these to appropriate Commons categories. My current thinking is to use an LLM like ChatGPT to guess the closest Commons category name from the Bulgarian terms, then manually review the results. Are there better tools, workflows, or recommendations for efficiently mapping subject metadata to Commons categories? atdt (talk) 14:38, 17 December 2024 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by ATDT (talk • contribs) 14:38, 17 December 2024 (UTC)

@Atdt: Not answering your question, but in addition to their copyright status in Bulgaria, please do not forget to indicate the copyright status of each postcard in the United States, e.g. "PD-US-expired" for postcards published before 1930 or possibly "Not-PD-US-URAA" for postcards published after 1929, such as the 1934 postcard in your example, unless they had been first published or published simultaneously in the United States. -- Asclepias (talk) 16:07, 17 December 2024 (UTC)

Modifying a public domain's image from Wikimedia Commons

I translated the text on an image into Greek. I want to upload the modified image, but the "Upload Wizard" gives me only two options: a) "This work was created by me and everyone is free to use it". b) "This work was created by someone else and it free to share". Well, I can't take the credit for it, just because I have changed a few words, but I can't make the original author responsible for my changes either. What shall I do? Aris Makridis (talk) 15:16, 17 December 2024 (UTC)

@Aris Makridis: This question is probably to be understood primarily in relation to copyright. So, the first thing is to determine if you estimate that your translation generates or not a distinct copyright to your benefit. If yes, the modified work includes works from both authors and I suppose the answer can be either a or b, and you can adapt whatever might need to be adapted in the description page. If not, the answer would be b. (Or, maybe more smply, you can just avoid such problematic questions by not using the Upload Wizard for this type of situation. But you still have to indicate if you consider yourself one of the authors of the final work or not.) -- Asclepias (talk) 15:45, 17 December 2024 (UTC)
The original image is from the user LadyofHats and she has released it in the public domain. I do not claim any rights for the translation. I just want to make the correct attribution out of courtesy and at the same time take the responsibility for the changes. That's all. Aris Makridis (talk) 16:45, 17 December 2024 (UTC)
Explain in the Author column that you modified from her original work. Bastique ☎ let's talk! 16:58, 17 December 2024 (UTC)
@Aris Makridis: You can answer whatever you prefer to the Upload Wizard, what matters is what you actually write in the description page of the file. From what you said, I suppose that what you want to do is to indicate the author of the original, specify that you translated the text in Greek, and use the same PD tag as the original. Basically, the same things that you said here, but formatted to fit into the description page of the file. If you want, you can use the template "Retouched picture" to specify what you changed as compared to the original. -- Asclepias (talk) 17:08, 17 December 2024 (UTC)
Some things are basically not well handled with the Upload Wizard. You can either (1) do your best with the Wizard, then go back and edit the file page by hand or (2) use Special:Upload, copy-paste from the file page of the original you are working on, and edit accordingly either before or after uploading. - Jmabel ! talk 18:51, 17 December 2024 (UTC)

Thank you 456legend (talk) 01:44, 20 December 2024 (UTC)

@456legend, the newer upload is a much larger file, in fact. It would be preferred to have the larger one over the smaller one, but we have no reason to delete either flag, it's acceptable to have multiple images of the same flags here on Commons. It is possible that the user used your image, made it larger, and cleaned it up, and should be crediting you, but there's no way to be certain about that. Photo is mine

Hi there. I just tried uploading a photo that is mine that I wish to add to Barbara Weisberg's Wikipedia entry. I used the upload wizard but the error I received said: it could not be determined if the file was suitable. I spent hours trying to figure out what the problem is but I guess I need a very specific explanation for that file if you are able to help. I would very much appreciate it. The filename is barbaraweisbergphoto. JoClarke100 (talk) 14:55, 20 December 2024 (UTC)

@JoClarke100: That is not a possible file name, because it has no extension to indicate the file type. I assume this is about File:BarbaraWeisbergPhoto.jpg.
When you say "a photo that is mine" do you mean you took the photo and own the copyright, or do you mean something else? I ask because I see we are Commons:Deletion requests/File:DavidBlack.jpg still trying to sort out the status on an earlier photo that you claimed as "own work" but 2 days ago wrote "The photo was taken by his wife in their home," and said you would sort it out through VRT. I assume that you have not yet done that, since the file page is not marked with {{Permission pending}}. (I also wonder about your assertion that the photo was taken on the day you uploaded it; please make sure to be accurate about that as well.)
I'm not expert on these logs, and I'm not sure what tool you used to try to upload. If you used something other than Special:UploadWizard here on Commons (e.g. if you were cross-wiki uploading from the English-language Wikipedia) and if you took the photo yourself, then please try Special:UploadWizard. If you did not take the photo yourself, please be more careful to accurately describe your uploads in terms of authorship and date, and to go through the COM:VRT process for third-party materials (and, again, use Special:UploadWizard).
Let me know if any of that is unclear; I know it's a bit complicated. - Jmabel ! talk 18:36, 20 December 2024 (UTC)
@Jmabel: The page linked from the "details" link in the filter log provides information, e.g. in this case the upload attempt was with the Upload Wizard. The triggered filter is for small files by accounts with less than 25 edits. -- Asclepias (talk) 20:29, 20 December 2024 (UTC)
The filename extension was jpg. I should have included it. At this point, I have removed the photo of David Black; I believe the second Barbara Weisberg photo never made it in. I will address this issue when I have more time. I really appreciate your comments. The more important concern is the article on David Black - hoping it gets approved this go-round. JoClarke100 (talk) 01:09, 21 December 2024 (UTC)
@JoClarke100: Was "File:BarbaraWeisbergPhoto.jpg", that you attempted to upload on 20 December 2024, the same photo, maybe of a smaller size, as File:BarbaraWeisberg.jpg deleted on 17 December 2024? If so, please do not upload multiple copies of a file. When the problem is settled, the existing file can be undeleded. -- Asclepias (talk) 20:29, 20 December 2024 (UTC)

I couldn't find a good image existing on wikimedia, but I found this (https://umedia.lib.umn.edu/item/p16022coll175:4519) on the University of Minnesota library's website. I got a dataset from IMF website, say [3]. According to their website it is free to use their data so long the data are not tampered with and a citation from where the data came from [4]. Now *I* made a figure (plotting and adding explanation etc) based this dataset, and I want to upload this figure. Making the figure is my work and I do not seek any copyright. However, it is not clear what licence I should use given that the dataset is from IMF. Please advice on how to proceed, I do not frequently do this (uploading figures) so forgive my ignorance. Thank you in advance. A.Cython (talk) 03:30, 22 December 2024 (UTC)

I would recommend using CC-BY, with the required attribution including the credit to the IMF. - Jmabel ! talk 05:25, 22 December 2024 (UTC)
@Jmabel I uploaded the figure here, [5], let me know if I missed something. A.Cython (talk) 05:09, 24 December 2024 (UTC)
@A.Cython: I guess I assumed more experience than you have, my apology.
When I said "using CC-BY" I meant a current version of the CC-BY license, not one that has been outmoded for over a decade, but I can see how you got confused when I didn't spell that out. Also that "subst" thing you did makes no sense at all. I can not edit a license for you in this case, because I can't license it on your behalf. Could you please replace {{self|subst:Custom license marker added by UW}} {{CC-BY}} with {{CC-BY 4.0|attribution=[[User:A.Cython|A.Cython]], using IMF data from https://www.imf.org/external/datamapper/NGDPDPC@WEO/GRC/EURO/EU}}. - Jmabel ! talk 06:47, 24 December 2024 (UTC)
Thank you for helping me. No worries. I have been working mostly on Wikipedia articles but never really added images (I think I added a few before the Wiki Commons even existed), which is a different beast, so it is like I am starting from the beginning. Uploading .OGG files

Yesterday, I uploaded 11 .ogg audio pronunciation files for our Википсалълъэ (Kabardian Wiktionary) (for example, гу379гупщэ.ogg). Although the system said that the file had uploaded correctly in the first stage, apparently the control information was not recorded properly in the second. Unfortunately, I didn't write down the message, but I believe it was something about a border violation. Now the command doesn't work for this file and I am unable to use it in the dictionary. Furthermore, I am unable to upload a replacement file under a different name. I merely get the message that it is identical to an existing file. How should I proceed with these files? I tried other files today and everything seems to be working correctly again... Rhdkabardian (talk) 10:40, 24 December 2024 (UTC)

@Rhdkabardian: I clicked the "Reset transcode" button at the bottom of File:Гу379гупщэ.ogg, now it works perfectly. Sometimes the system just messes up, in which case you can click that button. —Matrix(!) ping onewhen replying {user - talk? - uselesscontributions} 15:51, 24 December 2024 (UTC)

Can I upload the logo of the Irish Communist Party?

I don't know if the logo is copyrighted so can anyone know is it copyrighted or not?

Image URL: https://www.leftarchive.ie/image/1/400/0/images/org-logos/icp.png AlienBlox the Great (talk) 20:29, 13 December 2024 (UTC)

I mean, if they are communists, surely the flag belongs to everyone.... However, here on Commons the burden of proof is on the uploader to insure that an image is not subject to copyright. This page seems to indicate that most of the images on the site are fair use, Commons requires that they be freely licensed, so probably not. Just Step Sideways (talk) 21:56, 13 December 2024 (UTC)
This exists
I checked the website of the party itself, and ironically these communists have copyrighted the entire site. We do already have at least two user-created images of the current flag though. Just Step Sideways (talk) 22:01, 13 December 2024 (UTC)

@SumMus235711: you can make a move request. There should be a "move" tab, typically on the top nav of every file page (though some skins may place it differently). Since you are not a filemover, what this will do is to make a request for a filemover to move it.
Alternatively you can use {{Rename}}, but the move tab should do a better job of guiding you through the necessary steps.
Also, please: when referring to a particular file here, use an internal link, e.g. File:PatrickRobertMartens.jpg. - Jmabel ! talk 18:08, 22 December 2024 (UTC)

Fair use help

I have added a number of derivative images that need more information in order not to be deleted. I would like to claim 'fair use' along with listing the source. Please help to do this properly so that the images are not removed. Images add so much important context, and so many either don't know how to upload images or all of them are owned by private corporations at high fees. Help me to make the proper 'fair use' claim so that the images can be retained.ProfessorKaiFlai (talk) 18:33, 22 December 2024 (UTC)

@ProfessorKaiFlai Fair use is not allowed on this website, Wikimedia Commons. It is allowed on the English Wikipedia, but its requirements are fairly restrictive. If it meets the requirements, you can upload an image to the English Wikipedia as "fair use" at w:en:Wikipedia:File upload wizard by clicking the "upload a non-free file" button. —‍Mdaniels5757 (talk • contribs) 18:45, 22 December 2024 (UTC)

Doubts about adding two photos

I was thinking about adding photos to the wikipedia article of composer Ellen Taaffe Zwilich. I saw two but I have doubts if they should be included, and I would greatly appreciate some guidance. The first picture is this one from the Library of Congress. According to this description, the photographer has authorized use of her photographs under a Creative Commons CC BY-NC-ND license, which if I am not wrong is not acceptable to include in Wikipedia Commons. The second is this one, which comes from the composer's own press kit. Would it be appropiate to add it? I am unsure of the copyright status of press kits. Thanks for the help beforehand! @NeoGaze On the first, per Commons:Licensing#Well-known_licenses you're correct, that's out. On the second, the only clear statement is "Photo by Bill Keefrey" and that's not good enough, "we" need the license clearly stated. @Thehistorianisaac: For simple criterion-1 renamings like this, you probably just need to wait till a filemover next looks at the category, which I would expect to take a few hours at most. Using *Purchased* Getty Images

I saw the previous answer about not using Getty Images, even if public domain. However, what if I purchase the image in question? I noticed that (1) some of the licenses allow for noncommercial use upon purchase (including for educational purposes and (2) there is also an option to license the image to another entity altogether (e.g., Wikimedia??). Please confirm, thank you in advance! Zurkhardo (talk) 16:48, 26 December 2024 (UTC)

@Zurkhardo: That's most probably not OK, unless the image is in the public domain for some other reason. Noncommercial licenses are not allowed on Commons. Yann (talk) 17:00, 26 December 2024 (UTC)
Being one purchaser of a license to the image does not give you the right to relicense it, any more than owning a copy of a book lets you do the same. - Jmabel ! talk 18:55, 26 December 2024 (UTC)
@Zurkhardo: What makes you think that any license offered by Getty Images is free enough to be usable here?   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 12:18, 27 December 2024 (UTC)
I may be misreading / misunderstanding their License Agreement: The images I'm interested in are "Rights-Managed" and state they can be used for "Newspapers and magazines (except for covers), editorial broadcasts, documentaries, non-commercial websites, blogs and social media posts illustrating matters of public interest" and that "Anyone in your organization can use it an unlimited number of times for up to 15 years, worldwide, with uncapped indemnification". Getty Images Zurkhardo (talk) 14:55, 27 December 2024 (UTC)
Wikimedia licenses are irrevocable and exist in perpetuity, so a license with a 15-year term is invalid. There is also the problem of what constitutes "your organization," which would imply that the postulated license is not usable outside of Wikimedia projects, which again is not a valid license on WM projects. I'm confident Getty would object, as would Commons. Acroterion (talk) 17:08, 27 December 2024 (UTC)

Someone tag some of my uploads as no permission because I put the source url as the url of the latest release on github which does not mention the license itself. @Talloaks2024: Hi, and welcome. I regret to inform you that you have triggered Special:AbuseFilter/281. Please read Mediawiki:Abusefilter-disallowed-pdf-new-user-upload again. Also, you have triggered Special:AbuseFilter/153 by trying to cross-wiki upload a pdf image as a new user, and Special:AbuseFilter/153 by trying to cross-wiki upload a smaller (<50,000 bytes or <2,000,000 pixels) jpg image as a new user. Such uploads of pdf and smaller jpg images are not allowed at all. You indicated it's your own work. Usually when someone uploads a pdf image, it's a copyright violation taken from the web. Please upload the full-size original of it per COM:HR, including any metadata, but if you were not the original image designer or photographer, that person may need to license it on their official website or social media, or send the image and permission via VRT with a carbon copy to you. In addition, any non-jpg raster image will look fuzzy when scaled down (due to design decisions discussed in phab:T192744) or jaggy when scaled up, so you may want to upload svg or jpg versions, too. If you can't get a compliant license, the image may still be uploaded to English Wikipedia in compliance with en:WP:F because we don't allow Fair Use here. If you use our Upload Wizard instead, you should be able to avoid filter 153, but you will run into Special:AbuseFilter/281 until you have Autopatrol. @Ptrdxn: this started out with you saying there is an error in an article, apparently on the English-language Wikipedia (en-wiki). That has nothing to do with Wikimedia Commons. You linked a page that you can perfectly well cite in making the correction on en-wiki
You seem to be trying to upload a file to Commons. If it is the PDF from https://www.austlit.edu.au/austlit/page/A33687, please don't. Commons can accept only materials that are either in the public domain or free-licensed. That PDF appears to be neither.
In short: please deal with the en-wiki issue on en-wiki, and if you were trying to upload that particular PDF, the filter was correct in stopping you. - Jmabel ! talk 06:45, 29 December 2024 (UTC)

About P. Ramlee

1. P. Ramlee (1929–1973) was a Malaysian film star and singer, but before 1964, he mostly worked in Singapore (making films). If I want to upload photos of P. Ramlee from before 1964, should I follow the copyright laws of Malaysia or Singapore?

2. Can everyone riefly explain Singapore's copyright law?

3. Regarding early P. Ramlee films (which can be found on YouTube), if the copyright has expired, can they be uploaded freely? 2402:1980:244:D23C:5CA:5CB:C2CF:21FA 16:52, 30 December 2024 (UTC)

I suspect that if you do a search on "copyright Singapore" without the quotations you will get far better summaries of Singapore's copyright laws than anyone is likely to give you here. - Jmabel ! talk 17:24, 30 December 2024 (UTC)

Uploading a group of files

Using Windows, I need to upload groups of photos of the same subject, so the categories and descriptions will be the same, and the name will be the same except for a sequence number.

I used to use Vicuna for this, but I can no longer get it to work. I was advised to download the vicuna zip file, go to the bin folder and run the vicuna.bat file. When I do this, Windows doesn't like it, but I tell it to run anyway. Then a command line screen comes up for a fraction of a second, then disappears, without doing anything.

Is there a way to get Vicuna to work? Is there a Windows alternative that does the same thing?

I need something like an EXE or BAT file to run. I can't run Python code. If I am taken to a list of folders on something like GitHub, I am completely baffled.

What can I do to upload a group of related photos that have most of the information in common? Bubba73 (talk) 06:40, 20 December 2024 (UTC)

Do you start the vicuna.bat file from the file manager by clicking the mouse? Try opening a command shell and enter vicuna.bat from the prompt. You will either see the actual error message, or the program will ask you for some input parameters to run.
Or you can use the Upload wizard. C.Suthorn (@Life_is@no-pony.farm - p7.ee/p) (talk) 08:41, 20 December 2024 (UTC)

You need to update Java on your computer. Vicuna was compiled for Java Classes Version 55 or above. The Java Runtime on your computer is for Java Classes up to version 52. Java/Windows is supposed to autoupdate Java, but that has not happened on your computer. You will need to update Java manually, then Vicuna and other Java-Software will run again. That is a really confusing. It sounds like you are not doing the best process to do this. As Korntrans says, this is your file, so you can simply overwrite it.
Go to File:TGD cover.jpg. Near the bottom of the page (under the File History) you will see a link captioned "Upload a new version of this file". Click it. Upload your replacement file. That should then appear in the article (though there may be a delay due to caching).
Also: for this sort of thing, it is probably wise to go through the COM:VRT process to get a ticket that clarifies that you are, indeed, the author of the image. - Jmabel ! talk 18:04, 21 December 2024 (UTC)

How do I replace large files?

I have a Wikimedia page with a JPG file that is larger than 100Mb. I want to post a replacement image, but I can't figure out how. I originally uploaded it using "Upload Wizard", but when I click on "Upload a new version of this file" I get taken to an "Upload file" page that doesn't allow uploads greater than 100Mb. So how do I upload a replacement JPG that's larger than 100Mb? Pixel8tor (talk) 02:52, 24 December 2024 (UTC)

@Pixel8tor: I'm not sure where Upload Wizard enters into what you are describing, so I might be misunderstanding you.
If I understand correctly, you are trying to overwrite an existing file. May I assume you want to overwrite a file you initially uploaded? In general, there are very few cases where you should overwrite someone else's file, and my guess is that your account does not have the privileges to do that.
Assuming I've got that right: on the file page for the file you want to replace, right next to "Upload a new version of this file" it should say "(chunked upload)". Click on the latter, not the former, to upload a file over 100Mb. - Jmabel ! talk 06:55, 24 December 2024 (UTC)
Thanks for your quick reply. You are understanding me correctly, I want to replace one of my uploads. Unfortunately, there is no "(chunked upload)" link next to "Upload a new version of this file" on my screen. To be clear, I do see the "Upload a new version of this file" link, but there is *no* "(chunked upload)" link. Pixel8tor (talk) 12:48, 24 December 2024 (UTC)
@Pixel8tor: User:Rillke/bigChunkedUpload.js is not available by default. You have to enable it with adding mw.loader.load('/w/index.php?title=User:Rillke/bigChunkedUpload.js&action=raw&ctype=text/javascript'); in your Javascript page. Thanks guys. I put it in the "Shared CSS/JavaScript for all skins:" section - seems to work. Or is it better in a different section? Pixel8tor (talk) 02:21, 25 December 2024 (UTC)

Well I thought it was working but at the end I'm getting this error "FAILED: abusefilter-warning: ⧼abusefilter-warning-overwriting-artwork⧽". And the image is stuck in my Stash. So how do I prevent the "overwriting artwork" error? And is there a way to publish the file from the Stash, or is that file unusable? Pixel8tor (talk) 23:33, 26 December 2024 (UTC)
@Pixel8tor: Log says it gave you a warning, not that it disallowed. Was there no button available with something like "Ignore warning and save anyway"? - Jmabel ! talk 04:08, 27 December 2024 (UTC)
Jmabel: The message was "FAILED: abusefilter-warning: ⧼abusefilter-warning-overwriting-artwork⧽", so it *FAILED*! It wasn't just a warning. And no, the script has no way to "ignore" the failure. Pixel8tor (talk) 16:15, 27 December 2024 (UTC)
@Pixel8tor: Also, that was File:Leonardo da Vinci - Mona Lisa (Louvre, Paris)FullResFXD1.tif, which is not JPG. In addition, someone wrote in the notes "Doesn't work with stashupload", so you may not be able to do that with bigChunkedUpload in any case. Which of the acceptable situations in MediaWiki:Abusefilter-warning-overwriting-artwork applies?   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 12:12, 27 December 2024 (UTC)
Jeff G.: I'm not sure what you're asking, plus I find that page *very* confusing! I'm trying to "replace" an image file that *I* created, that's > 100MB, with a revised version that has much better color. It's as simple as that. I've done that successfully using the "Upload a new version of this file" link with other files. But, as you know, that doesn't allow file sizes > 100MB, so I tried "bigChunkedUpload.js". Which implies it would automatically overwrite my original upload. Instead I get the "FAILED: abusefilter-warning: ⧼abusefilter-warning-overwriting-artwork⧽" message and the file doesn't get published. What went wrong? Pixel8tor (talk) 16:17, 27 December 2024 (UTC)
@Pixel8tor: It sounds from what Jeff G. wrote like you tried to overwrite a JPEG with a TIFF. Did you? If so, that is never going to work. Upload the TIFF under a different file name. - Jmabel ! talk 19:17, 27 December 2024 (UTC)

I can't tell if you're trying to be funny, or you're trolling me. In either case it doesn't help solve my problem. If you don't have any constructive ideas for solving my issue of replacing my large file, please refrain from posting. Thanks. Pixel8tor (talk) 02:08, 28 December 2024 (UTC)

I am reaching out to inquire about the copyright status of the video titled "Lee Kuan Yew's 1984 National Day Rally Speech," which was uploaded on July 30, 2024. According to the copyright information on the page, it is marked as being in the public domain in the United States. However, I have concerns about whether the video truly qualifies as public domain, especially since it was first published in 1984.

As per the copyright laws of Singapore, it seems that the copyright for this video may not have expired yet. Given that the copyright protection period for such works typically lasts for 50 years after publication or first broadcast, it appears that this video might still be under copyright protection in Singapore and other countries, possibly until 2034.

Could you kindly clarify how this video qualifies for public domain status, particularly regarding its copyright status in Singapore and internationally?

Thank you for your assistance. 2001:D08:E6:D35B:5CA:5CB:C2CF:21FA 07:01, 31 December 2024 (UTC)

@2001:D08:E6:D35B:5CA:5CB:C2CF:21FA: Please see the transitional provisions (sections 205 and following) of the Copyright Act of 1987 of Singapore, in particular section 222a. The two templates in the description page of the file describe why it is in the public domain in Singapore and in the United States. It is outside the practice of Commons to search for you the status of the file in the hundreds of other jurisdictions in the world. -- Asclepias (talk) 13:37, 31 December 2024 (UTC)

Help finding or adding photo from British Library

Hello and thanks for your patience as I feel I'm losing my mind.

As part of my work on English Wikisource, I am currently transcribing and proofreading the 1611 edition of the King James Bible. I am presently trying to obtain a better version of the image at en:wikisource:Page:BibleKJV1611-001.pdf/76. This is a map by John Speed done for the 1611 edition of the KJV. I have found a few variants of this map already on commons, such as File:Canaan..._Begun_-_by_Mr_John_More_;_continued_and_finished_by_John_Speede_-_btv1b8491520b.jpg, File:John Speed, Canaan (FL36012616 3911705).jpg, and File:John Speed, Canaan (FL45605174 3942061).jpg. However, these are other versions of this exact map, and not good enough for use on this specific project. I have found the most reliable way to identify this *specific* image is by identifying one in black and white, looking at the "sea monster" in the center, which in the correct version is somewhat dog-like and faces the reader's left, and of course verifying that it says "1611" in the center bottom.

I have found a good-quality reproduction of this image at the British Library, shelfmark "Maps.*695.(2)". I have tried to find if this exact image is already in commons by searching for this shelfmark and in the category Category:Images from the British Library Mechanical Curator collection and subcategories. I've also looked at the British Library's Flickr page, but as you can see, these collections are both enormous and very difficult to search through. I have a persistent identifier for the image I need, and yet I cannot find it. I am trying to upload this image according to the standards set by the project Commons:British Library/Mechanical Curator collection, but that project seems to be more or less abandoned.

I am asking for help in one of the following ways:

  1. Locating a copy of this image already on wikimedia commons, so I can appropriately categorize it and include it on the Wikisource project
  2. Finding a high-quality copy of this image from the British Library in a way that has a clear free license or is public domain (ie from its flickr account, as the normal 'checkout' process on the BL's website does not grant an unlimited free license for use, despite the image {probably} being PD)
  3. Locating another high quality image of this two-paged map, that is an adequate reproduction of the illustration as it originally appears in the 1611 scan linked above. Another, similar image is inadequate for the standards of English Wikisource. OR....
  4. Giving me assurance that despite appearances, I can just download the image through the BL's normal "checkout" process and upload it here as an image in the public domain, despite BL's default non-free license.

Please help me. I'm a fairly experienced commons user, but dealing with massive pre-existing collections is always a pain, British copyright makes no sense to me, and Flickr's search is broken beyond repair. Thank you! Mathmitch7 (talk) 18:58, 28 December 2024 (UTC)
