Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]

[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

If you are claiming that an image is out of copyright because the author has been dead for more than seventy years you need to state who the author is and, if they are not a public figure, when they died, or at least how you know that they died more than seventy years ago.

Faebot and Category:Geograph images in Monmouthshire

Hi John, you may be interested in keeping an eye on Category:Geograph images in Monmouthshire. This should populate itself over the next couple of weeks. There might be some undiscovered gems in those automated uploads, and if anyone fancies tweaking image categories, there should be plenty to get right amongst Category:Geograph images in Wales. Hmmm, I think the best thing to do is speak to User:Llywelyn2000 (best try him on Wicipedia Cymraeg), I don't know what the convention was in England but it may help to follow the same system as long as it worked ok to make it match? Category:Geograph images in Monmouthshire appears complete now and has been checked for accuracy - it's a more accurate type of categorization than has ever been used on Commons before, in terms of the accuracy at the boundaries between regions. I will be aiming to complete the whole of Wales in a month or two, and may be able to use the same routine to categorize non-Geograph images with geocoordinates later in the year. Oh, by the way, I can only do this sort of work for the UK as it all depends on the Ordnance Survey open data, other countries have other schemes. Cheers --Fæ (talk) 01:02, 8 January 2013 (UTC)

biodiversitylibrary pics

Maybe it's simpler to download drawings directly from biodiversitylibrary. Go to the BHL homepage (http://www.biodiversitylibrary.org/), write a title or author in the search box, hopefully you get some results (they have thousands of rare books online, fantastic that they share all this on the internet). I do most of the time a lot of illustrations from 1 book, so I just download the complete book to my own hard disk (click "download contents" in the right upper corner). After that it's easy to upload to Commons.
Please use the BHL template as "source" (example: {{Biodiversity Heritage Library|url=http://www.biodiversitylibrary.org/item/95058#page/109/mode/1up}} (just copy-and-paste the URL of the BHL page in this template), the result is

Please cite your source

I noticed that most of the Office for National Statistics images you uploaded from Flickr do not have the proper source just the general photostream but no link to the actual images. We can't check the image copyright easily and must go rooting around (some editor won't even bother and just tag them for deletion on the beasis that if you can't be bothered, then they can't be bothered either). I did check most and found several that were All rights reserved which we cannot use and must be deleted, but you gave them a free Creative Commons licence. This is false and may even get you blocked from editing if you were to persist, so please be careful of each and every image licence and do not upload or make false claims on copyright status. We are all volunteers here and failing to provide the proper source and giving a false licence just gives editors more work they really do not need. The Flickrstream is the ONS' official one, it is unfortunate they have not applied the correct licence. Everything published directly by the ONS, is covered by the Open Government Licence as a default, see http://www.ons.gov.uk/ons/site-information/information/creative-commons-license/index.html.

John, I believe all these images link back to the ONS website as a source via the Flickrstream postings, it would be better to include the ONS link on these uploads and then add the {{OGL}} to the images rather than using anything else. As an example, I have done this for File:Working and Workless Households 2013.png, none should be deleted from Commons in my view as the ONS published statement is so clear. Hi, that's a great opportunity! Though not an insect, the mouthparts of a tick would be interesting – as far a I can see, we don't have anything like that yet. Sending in emails to OTRS about images that fall under the OGL would be a waste of OTRS volunteers time. All that needs to happen here is to track down the source at the ONS and give this image the correct PD licence, namely OGL. Sourcing to Flickr is slightly misleading as we can only verify the CC-BY licence. --Fæ (talk) 20:45, 1 January 2014 (UTC)

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the second round of the 2013 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the eighth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2013) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year were entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

There are two total rounds of voting. In the first round, you voted for as many images as you liked. The top 30 overall and the most popular image in each category have continued to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just one image to become the Picture of the Year.

Dear John Cummings,

The 2013 Picture of the Year competition has ended and we are pleased to announce the results: We shattered participation records this year — more people voted in Picture of the Year 2013 than ever before. In both rounds, 4070 different people voted for their favorite images. Additionally, there were more image candidates (featured pictures) in the contest than ever before (962 images total).

In the first round, 2852 people voted for all 962 files
In the second round, 2919 people voted for the 50 finalists (the top 30 overall and top 2 in each category)

We congratulate the winners of the contest and thank them for creating these beautiful images and sharing them as freely licensed content:

157 people voted for the winner, an image of a lightbulb with the tungsten filament smoking and burning.
In second place, 155 people voted for an image of "Sviati Hory" (Holy Mountains) National Park in Donetsk Oblast, Ukraine.
In third place, 131 people voted for an image of a swallow flying and drinking.

Hello John, thank you for your attemps to improve the page, however, this page is mostly edited and update by the FPCbot. When an image is promoted, the BOT remove an older file and put the most recntly promoted. The link you have put on the images will likely be removed as soon as the BOT will edit again the page, and the links will not be available. It seems indeed the BOT ignore now the page, and apparently will maybe not update anymore this page. I don't know if it is a good thing or not... I personnaly avoid to touch to this kind of things, my previous edits in this page were carrefully done to avoid disturbing the BOT. I take a little time to think about that, but I think to revert. I reverted the changes. In fact, you can create a new different page, and if the community agree after being asked for such a change (the page is heavily watched), you can transclude your new page instead of the current one. I think FPCBot is following the gallery tags in each section. The bot operator Daniel78 is not very active nowadays. Another editor KTC also seems on vacation. J e e 17:09, 29 November 2016 (UTC)

I'm around. All I do is restart the bot if it goes down. I don't actually know any python to make changes to the bot. I don't know but now I reverted, it's back to normal. Since we made some changes, the style has evolved a lot. Do you think the page is not comprehensible enough? The images shown are the latest promoted, and without arbitrary decisions, that show what exactly is the current FPC process...and all the promoted images of all users are shown at one time or another, this is also a very good thing. Hi Christian Ferrer and Jkadavoor

So I've been working with UNESCO social media and publications to identify what changes could be made to make the page easier for them and other people looking for images to use. Their main feedback was:

Most sections are too broad and it is difficult to find what you are looking for because you have to guess which section things will be (this was especially true for the Objects section), however sections some are really specific, its not consistent.
It is confusing that you click on More to get to more images, it's very easy to miss the link or not understand what it leads to and most people who I showed the page to assumed that these were the only featured pictures on the subject.
The page doesn't fit with the styling of the subpages
Text on the page was unclear and didn't include information on how to reuse the images (I have now added this).

I think that the issue with showing the latest image from each section could be implemented on the changes I have made because each image relates to the headings on the page (except the unsorted heading). I guess this would mean the bot would need some adjustment. Can you see any other issues?

I think it is possible to put texts and explanations to adress the issues mentionned without changing the function of the page. E.g. instead of "more", we can easily write something else as "click here to find more images in this category...". Regarding if the sections are specific or not, the links are currently leading to the existing galleries, and the galleries are made according to the number of the promoted images within a specific subject. We can not make a gallerie when there is only one image for a topic. But again this can be resolved by more text, we already added the common names, we can add mores infos too. Thank you for raising these problems, we will try together to find solutions which adapt to the constraints of the page. I will try to see what I can do in the next days / weeks, but if you have specific suggestions of text or something else, don't hesit to ping me before to to take the risk to disturb the BOT. Obasanjo at UNESCO

Hi John, might you be able to help me secure permissions for a UNESCO image? I'm looking for a photo of Nigerian president Obasanjo presenting a replica of a mask to UNESCO director Matsuura in 2005, for what I imagine was "Africa Day" (May 25, 2005). See the example here: [1]. I could only find a photo of the mask in the Mediabank. Converting this to a vp9/opus file seems to have made the server willing to transcode it, but the 100MB version that you had uploaded itself has errors. Paper for calligraphy is often a bit yellow, as it's raw paper, with to much whitening to keep goot paper quality.
