Thanks Icarusgeek for doing some clean-up of categories on my submissions under the category Plaques in Aberdeen. I notice you've changed quite a few from Plaques in Aberdeen to Round plaques in Aberdeen but in others you've left both. It would be great if you could leave both as I use Plaques in Aberdeen in a big project on Wiki Data that I am running as a WikiMedia trainer. Wondering if there is a quick way to identify the ones changed so I / you / we can reset them to use that category please? Hope this makes sense, Ian. Watty62 (talk) 16:15, 31 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Actually, ignore the above. There were only about 12 files that needed Plaques in Aberdeen added back in, so I fixed it. Best wishes. Watty62 (talk) 16:30, 31 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for doing the split on this. Big job! It's a lot more useful like that. Andy Dingley (talk) 14:29, 20 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Oh thank you very much. Doing it has made me even keener to visit YSP, and also made me more aware of the artists whose work has been exhibited there. Icarusgeek (talk) 14:27, 2 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Your are quite right. And I was quite wrong. Thank you! Icarusgeek (talk) 11:04, 28 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Buddha Bar[edit]

Re [1]: do you have some reason to think the now-defunct Buddha Bar in Seattle's Belltown neighborhood had any relation to the French chain that this category refers to? I'm pretty sure it didn't, but I could be wrong. Unless you've got something, mind if I revert? - Jmabel ! talk 15:42, 7 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Oh revert away - I got my list to update from a search which I probably malformed. Thanks for asking!Icarusgeek (talk) 16:02, 7 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Removal of categories[edit]

Greetings Icarusgeek! I was just wondering why you removed categories with this edit. Kelly (talk) 18:16, 11 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Greetings Kelly. You and me both - I can see no reason why I did that - I think them removed without adding a new one. I'll rectify anon - and look at whatever else I did around the same time. Thanks for the heads-upIcarusgeek (talk) 06:46, 12 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Autopatrol given[edit]

Hello. I just wanted to let you know that I have granted autopatrol rights to your account; the reason for this is that I believe you are sufficiently trustworthy and experienced to have your contributions automatically marked as "reviewed". This has no effect on your editing, it is simply intended to make it easier for users that are monitoring Recent changes or Recent uploads to find unproductive edits amidst the productive ones like yours. In addition, the Flickr upload feature and an increased number of batch-uploads in UploadWizard, uploading of freely licensed MP3 files, overwriting files uploaded by others and an increased limit for page renames per minute are now available to you. I sincerely ask you a question which is very important to me. So, if I have made any mistake sorry for that.--Kai3952 (talk) 20:23, 1 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Icarusgeek: If you are not willing to answer questions about "your edits", please tell me what I am doing wrong!--Kai3952 (talk) 18:16, 2 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
If you can't answer me, then I would undo or change your edits. Because I think "Category:Unidentified locations of sculptures" is problematic, but I'm not sure why you think it is an "unidentified location".--Kai3952 (talk) 09:45, 3 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Dear Icarusgeek, would you be so kind not to follow me immediately when I am working in some field! E.g. I am engaged now with categorization of „Sculptures of Lagomorpha“ and you are hurrying up to categorize them in the same time. It is a right of anybody to follow others' edits, but in fact intervention during the process of editing would bring participants to conflicts of editing. Anyway, if you notice my mistake or erroneous approach, I would be grateful to inform me. Kind regards! --Elkost (talk) 13:16, 23 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Rrburke (talk) 14:55, 16 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

The statue is not in Seattle (it is 60 miles from Seattle in the state capitol, Olympia), and there is no reason for Category:Old Washington State Capitol to be a parent category (yes, most of our photos of that have that in the background, because if you photograph the statue from the front, that is behind it, but the statue is in a city park Sylvester Park, so it isn't even on state-owned ground). I'll fix this accordingly with a differently named category Category:Statue of John Rankin Rogers, Olympia, since "Seattle" should certainly not be part of the category name. - Jmabel ! talk 17:07, 22 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Per Commons:Categories#Category names is there no English equivalent for this term? How about "Edmund Gardner (ship) in Dazzle Camouflage"? Rodhullandemu (talk) 10:23, 4 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I might have the Liverpool Biennial programme which covered this. Will hunt for it, and says if that says anything helpfulIcarusgeek (talk) 10:33, 4 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Unlikely to be in French if it's aimed at a Liverpool audience. Some of them can barely manage English. Rodhullandemu (talk) 10:37, 4 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]
(Failure on the programme front) "Edmund Gardner (ship) in Dazzle Camouflage" seems OK to me - though I did see an image that used the phrase 'Dazzle Livery' which would also work I thinkIcarusgeek (talk) 16:35, 4 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]
On reflection, I don't think camouflage is the right word- that is disguise to make an object blend in with its surroundings, which clearly dazzle does not. Equally, I think livery implies some corporate or otherwise uniform treatment for things having some commonanilty. What about "dazzle colours"? If you have no objection, I'll move to Edmund Gardner (ship) in dazzle colours. Rodhullandemu (talk) 21:48, 4 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Anachronism[edit]

This seems a bit anachronistic: Alaska was not a U.S. state until more than five decades after the construction of this building. - Jmabel ! talk 17:47, 1 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Ach. You're right, of course. What do you think to a rename to Category:Buildings of the Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exposition (US states and territories)? Icarusgeek (talk) 18:05, 1 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
If you like. In that case, Hawaii & the Philippines would also qualify. - Jmabel ! talk 01:23, 2 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks - I shall get on it tomorow (unlikely to complete tthe moves in one sitting) - and I wouldn't have realised about the Philippines Icarusgeek (talk) 15:13, 3 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your work here. Suggestion: I wouldn't consider the Japanese Village a "country building" just because its theme was not domestic. It was a commercial undertaking, part of the Pay Streak, the more informal portion of the exposition that included things like a simulated "Eskimo" village, Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show, a giant cyclorama of the Battle of Gettyburg, amusement rides etc. It was doubtless one of the more staid parts of the Pay Streak, but it was more a piece of exoticism than a serious exhibition building like the official Japanese building at the fair. So, I'd be very inclined to revert that particular edit. - Jmabel ! talk 16:57, 4 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

You're right of course, and have reverted. Sorry about the delay I was mostly haning out on en wikipedia then real life vacation. Icarusgeek (talk) 10:27, 17 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Some momarchs, some kings, some both?[edit]

Hello! Please explain this edit! Are we to have some of the Norwegian kings only as monarchs, others only as kings and others as both? Very confusing. --SergeWoodzing (talk) 12:29, 17 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Because I went to lunch.
When I started both acts were present, and KoN the child of MoN. What tripped me up when editing Category:Olaf III of Norwayas it didn't look as though he was a king of Norway (which he obviously was) as most KoN were (and are still not) not in this cat. I subcatted the O*** kings then went to lunch.

Plaques[edit]

Good work on the plaques but why Category:Plaques in Wales by preserved county when everything else is categorised by Category:Principal areas of Wales? This seems to be an anomaly. Rodhullandemu (talk) 18:07, 24 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Rodhullandemu. I don't remember making a concious choice between the two - I probably just went up aa hierarchy until I found a grouping that I recognised from when I lived there / use on addresses now and these are familiar to me more than the others. (Gwent rather than Mon, Clwyd rather than the shires etc). I should be able to move to, or maybe alongside (I'll investigate) the principalsIcarusgeek (talk) 08:12, 25 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

What is foreign?[edit]

I have seen that you created Category:Foreign country pavilions of Expo 1958. My question is "what is considered as foreign?". Is that everything else than Belgium? But "Prague Expo 58 pavilon" does not fall in the category of foreign. Regards, Wouter (talk) 17:09, 6 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Talkpagelinktext.
It is (of course there are always disputes, this is my view) pavilions belonging to a country other than that of the host nation. But not, foreign pavilions that represent part of the visiting country. For example, Liverpool had a pavilion at Shanghai in addition to the UK pavilion; and at the 1967 expo in Canada there were some foreign/US state pavilions.
With Expo 58 there is a file which looks like it is Czech nation pavilion:File:Expo_1958,_Brüssel_,_tschechischer_Pavillon.jpg which makes me wonder if there were two separate pavilions and the "Prague Expo 58 pavilon" a city specific one not a country pavilion. It might be a country one, but I don't really know enough to categorise it that way.
Icarusgeek (talk) 18:01, 6 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the explanation. I added one line to the category Category:Foreign country pavilions of Expo 1958. If you want to change it or skip it no problem for me. Wouter (talk) 19:55, 6 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Parkgate[edit]

Great work on the plaques, but I wonder if having a category for one plaque is actually useful, especially since its a subcat of the cottage category, which contains one image. I don't think we should ask users to drill down unnecessarily when all the relevant stuff can be together. Also, I tend to create categories for the plaque only for the close-ups (rather than the incidentals) and when there is more than one image of the plaque. Comments? I see your point (it might look as though I intentionally went an added a stack to the cat almost wilfully so that there was more than one when I replied, but it was a passing edits situation) I'm quite happy for the cats to be yanked from those + just retain the not
>Also, I tend to create categories for the plaque only for the close-ups (rather than the incidentals) and when there is more than one image of the plaque.
Och. As a peruser of plaque cats (and statues etc.) I like to see these in situ - especially if I'm likely to see them in real life. Enabled me to know, rather than just suspect, that Category:John_Maynard_Keynes_founded_theatre_(blue_plaque),_Cambridge is no loner present. But the idea that a category should only be created if a close-up exist seems sensible

I was hoping you could clarify the intended scope of Category:Art of the First Nations, Burke Museum of Natural History and Culture, especially since "First Nations" is typically a Canadian, not a U.S. term. Is this intended specific to tribes/nations now within Canada? Does it refer to a specific exhibit at the Burke? If so, great, and we should clarify that scope on the page. If not, then it probably should be probably be a subcat of Category:Native American art by museum, and should be renamed to parallel the other such subcats. - Jmabel ! talk 02:14, 26 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @Jmabel, Thanks for asking
>especially since "First Nations" is typically a Canadian, not a U.S. term.
I think I vaguely knew that but not that it would be problematic (or I would have used something else)
>Is this intended specific to tribes/nations now within Canada?
No - I was just using the terminology I'd used elsewhere
>If not, then it probably should be probably be a subcat of Category:Native American art by museum, and should be renamed to parallel the other such subcats.
Seems sensible.

Thanks re Category:Coats of arms on stained-glass windows in England[edit]

I was working on this cat this afternoon, when there were about 300 left in it awaiting moves to their counties, next time I looked there were only 90. Thanks for your helpful and very quick work. How do you do it so fast?? By the way I was using Cat:Coats of arms on stained-glass windows in England (origin unknown) for foreign glass or glass not in original location or county, you seem to have removed all members from this cat. It could be useful as foreign glass won't be of interest to those interested in heraldry of specific English counties, a specialist subject. Also, heraldry in London is possibly best used for coats of arms associated with local families, rather than for heraldic glass in general (incl. foreign glass) in London museums. Cat Coats of arms on stained-glass windows in England (origin unknown) can be useful here too. Lobsterthermidor (talk) 18:36, 27 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Dividing people[edit]

Hi. You have been opening new (red) cats for "People from Europe", "People from Asia" etc? What is the difference of these from Category:People of Europe etc and what is the necessity to create these new cats? OTOH if you are making "continent-based" categorization (which is for me the most absurd thing, Spain has land in Africa, Groenland is not in Europe but in America etc) why are you leaving some countries without any continent cat? For a current ccomplaint about me (on CfDs) I am not taking your peculiar categorization to CfD. Please explain to me directly. --E4024 (talk) 14:54, 3 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Psalm 128 mural (Hendriks), Amsterdam[edit]

In spring 2019 you created this category and put 10 pictures in it. However; it are three different mosaics on three different flats. Also you put work by Hendriks in a category of Leo Horn, two totally different sculptors. Can you turn your actions back; maybe keep the category for the work by Hendriks as it has a biblical connotation. But Krijger (warrior) by Zwiers and Ladders (building place) by Horn must removed from it,Ceescamel (talk) 10:53, 1 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Statues or sculptures[edit]

Hello

What is the difference between sculptures and statues? If I understand correctly, a sculpture is more monumental. Nativity scenes are generally called statues. Why did you change the category of "Sculptures of the Holy Family in Poland"?

Categories of Holy Family for most countries are under "sculpture", therefore we can continue that way, even if it's not logical. Uniformity.
