Views from Aberdeen Art Gallery[edit]

Just a heads up that you created the category with a spelling mistake, but subsequentially put the other pictures in the correct but non-existing category. All fixed now. Happy editing. Agathoclea (talk) 08:56, 25 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

whoops! Many thanks for spotting and fixing that!

Autopatrol given[edit]

Hello. I just wanted to let you know that I have granted autopatrol rights to your account; the reason for this is that I believe you are sufficiently trustworthy and experienced to have your contributions automatically marked as "reviewed". This has no effect on your editing, it is simply intended to make it easier for users that are monitoring Recent changes or Recent uploads to find unproductive edits amidst the productive ones like yours. In addition, the Flickr upload feature and an increased number of batch-uploads in UploadWizard, uploading of freely licensed MP3 files, overwriting files uploaded by others and an increased limit for page renames per minute are now available to you. Thank you.. --- FitIndia Talk 07:13, 25 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

That's great. Thank you very much, User:Fitindia for sorting that out so quickly,

Aberdeen March Stones[edit]

I browsed my way into a mention of the Aberdeen March stones which I had never heard of before. I couldn't find anything specifically about them on Wikipedia and so wondered whether to write an article. I found quite a bit online but particularly your photographs in Category:Aberdeen March Stones. Thank you for doing all this! I've created some articles on these lines before, for example, w:List of recumbent stone circles but I'm not at all sure a single boundary stone is worth such detailed treatment as a stone circle. Perhaps more appropriate would be a more general treatment with a few examples. However, before even starting I wanted to see if you are planning anything like this. I wouldn't want to tread on your toes. Best wishes. Thincat (talk) 11:27, 21 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Thincat Thanks for getting in touch. I co-founded and run a charity called Code The City where we do loads with open data, and Wikimedia platforms. I wrote a piece about custom maps using the stones as an example. From that you will see which ones I have photographed and the as-yet missing ones. I also am a trainer for Wikimedia UK and I run or help at sessions training on Wikidata (mostly) as well as Wiki Commons and Wikipedia. Just this weekend past we had CTC25. While we did pretty well, I would say, it could also have been a great opportunity to write an article on the stones. I can't believe there is not one already but you are correct. That said, a small subsection of the March Stones are mentioned in the Woodside page. If you feel like collaborating I have some resources we could reference - just let me know.

Watty62 (talk) 17:37, 21 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

So often when I want to contact someone about edits from years ago I find they are no longer editing so it is particularly good to hear from you. You and I seem to have very different approaches to Wiki(m|p}edia but that is a strength, not a weakness. After retiring from a career in IT I tend to avoid anything technical but I'll pore over what you say about custom maps. In the past when I have wanted a map I have either used Inkscape to annotate a suitable base map or I have used {{Geogroup}}, sometimes then taking a screenshot of its output. I am interested in how you obtained the stones' coordinates. Did you find the stones from the descriptions in the Council's booklets and then use GPS or are the coordinates documented somewhere? I have found HES, etc, descriptions with coordinates for individual stones but not a consolidated list. As for resources I have merely searched the web but, in addition to the (excellent) Council material, I am pleased to have located on the web Chris Croly (2007) "Aberdeen’s stones of time" in The Leopard, Cruickshank & Gunn (1929) "The Freedom Lands" and Kennedy (1818) "Annals of Aberdeen". It looks as you have added your photos to entries already created by bots on Wikidata for the lat/long and grid reference in particular. Perhaps a comprehensive list in Wikipedia would be rather redundant. Thincat (talk) 10:24, 22 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Hi. It sounds like we have similar work histories. I think most of the stones in Wikidata were imports from Historic Scotland or Canmore. Some were missed which I fixed. I also fixed some coordinates which were well out. I did that mostly from EXIF data on the photos which I took, checking on the map that they were at the right place. One, in Cults was far out. I did inform Historic Scotland. Prep-andemic I was trying to photograph them all. That was the purpose of the custom map as you can navigate around and look for the missing ones and upload photos to commons with it.
I do think that there should be a WP article as many people never go near Wikidata and seldom think of Commons either. In WP we can provide more info, too. Maybe a short article, selection of illustrative pics and a map is all that is needed?
Watty62 (talk) 13:56, 23 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Maybe a short article, selection of illustrative pics and a map is all that is needed?. Yes I agree with that. Are you happy for me to start a draft for an article (I may be a bit slow)? So long as we can avoid edit conflicting I'd welcome your input since you know more of the background than I do. I think a good map is very important. I think we should definitely link to your custom map but don't know of a way of displaying it in the article. I think the Wikidata stuff linked to from the pop-up displays is quite reasonably human-readable. So, perhaps a screen capture (it there a better way?) and I could add annotation on the image (as I did with File:Bob Graham round.svg) or maybe use w:Template:Annotated_image. But importantly add a link to your interactive map possibly in the legend. I experimented with the technique you suggested to create a Wikidata entry at wikidata:Q110983948 for Achnanclach cottage, then a redirect :w:Achnanclach_bothy to an anchor at w:List of Mountain Bothies Association bothies#Achnanclach bothy which I got Wikidata to link to after some jiggery-pokery. However, it seems likely the custom map will be updated from time to time so I'd be good if the Wikipedia-hosted map could be updated reasonably easily. Here, I'm a bit stumped. Thincat (talk) 09:59, 24 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, that's fine. Just message if you need any input. I have the 1929 Munro(?) Map and Book of the stones. I made you a simple map which you can use: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Map_of_Aberdeen_Boundary_Stones.png We can figure out how to add the interactive map too if we want it (maybe in the talk page?).
Watty62 (talk) 16:35, 25 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
OK, I've created placeholders at w:User:Thincat/sandbox and w:User talk:Thincat/sandbox and I suggest continuing discussion at that talk page. I'll ping you from there if it seems appropriate (but tell me if it is not!). Your map seems ideal and I'll go ahead and annotate it by simply numbering the stones. I have a pdf of the Munro 1929 book I found linked to from here. Thincat (talk) 09:52, 26 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I've now moved the user sandbox draft to main space at w:March Stones of Aberdeen and w:Talk:March Stones of Aberdeen. Lots of redirects. Any suggestions (but particularly on Wikidata integration) would be very welcome. I've seen your post on my Wikidata user talk page but not done anything yet.Thincat (talk) 14:19, 1 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
That looks great! Well done. When I get a moment I'll drop some notes on the talk page. I've quite a bit of info but not quite sure if / we can use it. I'm not aware of a way to integrate a live map (of missing / existing photos) from Wikidata. I'll ask around too. Thanks. Ian Watty62 (talk) 14:45, 1 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the alert. I've fixed the omission and added a CC-BY-SA 4 tag as that is how the copyright holder wishes the image now to be licensed.
I'd already complied with the OTRS process. So, there is a OTRS_pending template in place.
I've generated a release email. And that will be sent by Festival Theatres, who hold copyright, to permissions-commons@wikimedia.org.
