Some holiday joy

Since 1959, it is a Swedish tradition to (at 3 pm) watch Donald Duck and other Disney cartoons on TV. The most appreciated part is about Donald as bird photographer in Clown of the Jungle. Sunset picture

Hello, Code. I'd like to nominate File:Sonnenuntergang am Kaisergebirge, Tirol, 160623, ako.jpg for FP, but I thought I'd ask you first whether you would consider it an FP and would support it if I nominate it. I find it special because it feels very peaceful and because we don't see the sun but see the sunlight scattered among the mountains and from behind the mountains, but if you don't think of it as an FP, I can nominate any number of other photos.

Thank you, Ikan Kekek. It makes me very proud that you consider my picture FP and of course I'll be happy if you'd nominate it. Personally I think it's quite a good one because of the very pleasing light in the mountains. It shows a lot of different tones and intensities of light and has a great depth. I reworked it from the scratch and uploaded it again with maximum JPEG quality. The file now weighs nearly 50MB but there shouldn't be any posterization left. I also decreased the saturation a little bit. If you still see some artefacts at the top part of the picture they're caused by the extreme stretching of the equirectangular projection and don't occur when viewed in the panorama viewer. When reviewing again please make sure you have your cache purged (I don't really know why but the panellum viewer still seems to use the older version). --Code 16:23, 20 March 2017 (UTC) Comment The sky looks better. @W.carter: You're welcome! Absolutely, of course. I'm working on a guide on 360° panorama stitching (German only for now) since a while but I didn't have much time to finish it in the last weeks. I'd like to share some more knowledge about panorama stitching and HDR techniques, maybe I can add some information to your guide if that's ok for you? Thanks! :) That guide is only a short "First Guide" to terms newbies may come across on QIC and FPC, and we try to keep it as short and general as possible but provide it with good links to more specialized pages. You are welcome to add to that page, there are many contributors to it, just keep the language simple and short so that people who are not proficient in English (or photographers) can understand it. But the best thing is if you work on your howto page, and I will link to it from the 'terms page'. Noise

I didn't want to mention it on the FP, but the sky on both versions has more noise than I'd have left in. I would hope the HDR would greatly reduce your noise. I have tended to turn off sharpening (i.e. take the default 25 down to 0) when preparing the initial frames for export. That way, no extra noise is introduced to the sky that might get stretched. Then once the whole thing has been processed, and a suitably sized image re-exported to Lightroom, I apply the sharpening I need. And usually with enough mask to avoid sharpening the sky. I know a little noise can help prevent posterisation in the sky, but to my eyes it just looks like your sky has had its noise sharpened and the contrast enhanced. Another idea is to use a brush with negative sharpening and an auto-mask, to paint over the sky. The negative sharpening will not blur, but will reduce any global positive sharpening by simple maths subtraction.

I wish browsers would open up in the middle of an image when you view 100%, rather than the top left. In a stitched image, the top left is often stretched and the noise apparent, whereas the centre is full of sharp detail. -- Colin (talk) 19:09, 7 April 2017 (UTC)

@Colin: Well, noise is an everlasting mystery to me. It seems to appear randomly, regardless of which ISO speed you choose. For example, please have a look at this picture. It was taken using ISO 1.600 and you don't see any noise at all. On the other hand, any blue hour shot I did (as [:File:Reichstagsgebäude und Paul-Löbe-Haus, Berlin-Mitte, 170327, ako.jpg|this one]] (ISO 400) or this one has a certain amount of visible noise in the sky. I really don't get it. The problem is that if I apply noise reduction posterization appears very quickly. I really don't know what to do. For myself, I've decided not to complain about noise any more as long it isn't colour noise. I think a certain amount of noise is quite normal in digital photgraphy (more or less the same way we were used to accept grain in film photography). Diliff once told me that it might be better to accept some noise in the sky than to get large areas posterized. I agree with that. However, thanks for your advice regarding the sharpening. I will try it out next time. What do you think about the new verison of the File:Reichstagsgebäude und Paul-Löbe-Haus, Berlin-Mitte, 170327, ako.jpg I've just uploaded? I used masks to apply some noise reduction in the sky, I hope it's better now? Regarding size I think 50MPix should be enough. Yes, the overlap between the frames might be large but it has to be because the bottom part contains lots of "empty" areas (water) where PTGui wouldn't find any control points if the overlap was too small. --Code (talk) 08:11, 8 April 2017 (UTC)

Innen ist sie nicht sehr spektakulär, der Bauzustand ist ein ganz anderer als auf den historischen Fotos. Ich hatte allerdings mal darüber nachgedacht, in der Rykestraße nachzufragen, die scheint innen extrem fotografierenswert zu sein. Individueller Lizenzbaustein

Um es noch einmal hier auszuführen: Wenn man eine Vorlage auf Basis von {{Cc-by-layout}} erzeugen will, benötigt man einen noch zu erstellenden Text im Translatewiki. Im dortigen Portal:de findet man eine Übersicht über aktive Übersetzer, die man eventuell fragen könnte. Ich würde aber ernsthaft vorschlagen, selbst eine Vorlage in Deineme Userspace zu erstellen – über Namensgebung und wo, darüber bist Du völlig frei. Willst Du nur eine Vorlage, dann lege sie direkt unter User:Code an, zum Beispiel User:Code/Flickr-Relicense, willst Du eventuell mehrere Lizenzvorlagen, wäre ein Unterverzeichnis wohl besser, zum Beispiel User:Code/Lizenzen/Flickr-Relicense. Dann könnte man eine bestehende Lizenzvorlage verwenden und anpassen. Für die Übersetzung würde ich {{LangSwitch}} statt Translatewiki oder Autotranslate nehmen. Die Einbindung auf Dateibeschreibungen würde mit {{User:Code/(Lizenzen/)Flickr-Relicense}} erfolgen. — Speravir – 22:46, 27 February 2018 (UTC)

Im Jahr 2018 wurden ebenso wie im Vorjahr etwa 24.000 Fotos hochgeladen, von denen viele die Artikel und Listen der Wikipedia illustrieren werden. Die Teilnehmerzahl lag diesmal bei 683, im Vorjahr waren es 1063.

Unsere Jury hat die Top100 der Bilder aus Deutschland ausgewählt. Die zehn bestplatzierten Fotos nehmen an der internationalen Ausscheidung teil.

Falls Du Lust auf einen weiteren Fotowettbewerb hast: Im September läuft Wiki Loves Monuments, wo Bilder von denkmalgeschützten Gebäuden eingereicht werden können.

Hallo Code! Wir würden gerne dein Panorama vom Kaisergebirge für ein Grossformat-Ausdruck in einer Ausstellung verwenden, und dich deswegen gerne kontaktieren. Image of Umberto Eco

Hi Code I noticed your call for more information on Commons Features Image Candidate I took a look in our photographoc database which contains slightly more information and metadata of the images. The original is a negative 24x36 mm (black & white) and it has been digitzed on a 2440x3667 pixels so a (original size) 20.70x31.00 cm @300 dpi print is possible.

Unbekannte Muschel

Hallo Code, danke für Deine Anfrage. Da es sehr viele ähnliche Schneckengehäuse (das Bild zeigt eine Schnecke, keine Muschel) gibt, lassen sich sich viele Arten nur bestimmen, wenn der Fundort einigermaßen bekannt ist, auch die Größe wäre wichtig. Gibt es darüber Infos? Auch eine "Mündungsansicht" (das ist die Ansicht, die meine Bilder jeweils in der Ansicht rechts oben zeigen) wäre ganz hilfreich. Ich kann daher nichts endgültiges sagen. Vom generellen Aussehen her würde ich das Gehäuse zu den Bucciniden stellen. Vergleiche das Gehäuse mal mit den Bildern auf dieser Seite (falls nur wenige Bilder zu sehen sind, in der Überschrift das große "ThumbNails" anklicken). Schau mal hier besonders auf die Siphonalia-Arten, die kommen dem ziemlich nahe. Falls Du noch mehr Infos über das Gehäuse hast, lass es mich bitte wissen, vielleicht kommen wir dann weiter. --Llez (talk) 08:35, 10 November 2018 (UTC)

@Llez: Vielen Dank für Deine schnelle Antwort. Die Mündungsansicht habe ich hier hochgeladen. Den genauen Fundort weiß ich gar nicht, ich habe das zuhause beim Entrümpeln gefunden. Meine Umfrage ist noch nicht abgeschlossen, sie müsste wohl aber eher aus Europa stammen. Ich habe mal versucht, die Muschel mit denen von der Website, die Du verlinkt hast, zu vergleichen, aber für einen Laien wie mich ist es extrem schwer, hier die relevaten Merkmale auszumachen. Ja, ich hab diesmal zum ersten Mal zwei Bilder in der letzten Runde. Das andere Bild von der Golden Gate Bridge fand ich allerdings besser. Naja, ich will mich aber mal nicht beschweren ;-) Und ja, die allgemeine Qualität finde ich auch sehr gut. Ich habe ohnehin den Eindruck, dass wir, was die Qualität der Featured Pictures angeht, über die Jahre zugelegt haben. Ohne aber den jeweiligen Trends nachzulaufen (extreme Farbsättigung usw.) Wiki Loves Earth 2019

Hallo Code,

vom 1. bis 31. Mai 2019 kannst Du wieder beim Fotowettbewerb Wiki Loves Earth Deutschland (WLE 2019) teilnehmen. Gesucht sind selbst aufgenommene Landschafts- und Naturfotos aus Schutzgebieten in Deutschland.

Für die Suche nach Motiven gibt es bei Wikipedia zahlreiche Listen und Karten. Als Einstieg kann diese Übersichtsseite dienen.

WLE 2019 kann nur durchgeführt werden, wenn weitere Mitarbeiter und Mitarbeiterinnen unser Team verstärken. Es geht unter anderem um die Organisation in der Wikipedia und das Sortieren der Bilder auf Commons. Über Art und Umfang der Beteiligung entscheidest Du selbst.

Wie in den Vorjahren übernimmt eine Vorjury ab Anfang Mai die Vorauswahl der Bilder. Auch daran kannst Du Dich gern beteiligen. Bei Interesse trage Dich bitte unter WLE-Vorjury ein, das Passwort kommt per E-Mail.

Besonders engagierte Freiwillige werden für die Jury benötigt. Wenn Du vom 12. bis 14. Juli in Fulda die besten Bilder küren willst, melde Dich auf der Jury-Seite.

Hi, regarding your undo of my edition I think that "Germany photographs" refers to photographs taken in Germany, no matter the subject of the photograph. I'm distributing all the photographs contained in Photographs taken on 2018-07-28 in subcategories of the countries where the works were made, so that's why I think your work should be with the other photographs taken in Germany that day. @Frodar: Well, thanks for your message and your efforts but I disagree. Besides the fact that I don't see any use of these "XXX photographs" categories at all they are especially senseless when the subject shown isn't at all related to a particular country. The shell comes from the ocean and was found in Denmark. How do you know at all that I've taken this photograph in Germany? And who cares? Wiki Loves Monuments 2019

Hallo Code,

bald ist es soweit: Vom 1. bis zum 30. September 2019 findet zum neunten Mal der internationale Wettbewerb Wiki Loves Monuments statt. Dabei können Bau- und Kulturdenkmale fotografiert und die Fotos hochgeladen werden. Du hast an einem der vergangenen Fotowettbewerbe teilgenommen. Deshalb laden wir dich ein, dieses Jahr wieder mitzumachen. Wir freuen uns auf deine Fotos!

Es sind viele spannende Motive überall in Deutschland zu fotografieren. Neben beeindruckenden märchenhaften Schlössern, Burgen und Kirchen können auch andere Kulturdenkmale wie Brücken, Industrieruinen, Bauernhöfe oder Parks fotografiert werden, um sie unter anderem in der Wikipedia zu dokumentieren. In den letzten Jahren sind zahlreiche neue Denkmallisten entstanden, die sich über Fotos freuen. Für die Suche nach Motiven gibt es bei Wikipedia zahlreiche Listen und Karten. Als Einstieg hilft diese Übersichtsseite. Weitere Informationen erhältst du auf der Mitmach-Seite.

Du bist interessiert, am Wettbewerb mitzuwirken, dir fehlt aber die richtige Technik? Dann wirf doch mal einen Blick in den Technikpool und das Technikleihportal von Wikimedia Deutschland! Dort findest du Kameras, Objektive und Zubehör verschiedenster Art. Sollte noch Technik fehlen, die aber in Zukunft unbedingt benötigt wird, dann freut sich Wikimedia Deutschland über dein Feedback zum Technikpool.

Außerdem laden wir Dich ein, ab Mitte September 2019 an der Vorjury teilzunehmen. Diese bewertet die hochgeladenen Bilder und ermittelt so gemeinsam mit der Jury, die im Oktober tagt, die Sieger von Wiki Loves Monuments 2019 in Deutschland. Das Vorjurytool ist hier bald freigeschaltet. Du benötigst dafür nur deinen Benutzernamen und das Passwort.

Wiki Loves Earth 2020

Hallo Code,

bald ist es soweit: Vom 1. Mai bis zum 30. Juni 2020 findet zum achten Mal der internationale Wettbewerb Wiki Loves Earth statt. Deutschland ist zum siebten Mal dabei. Dabei können unter anderem Nationalparks, Naturschutzgebiete, Geotope und Naturdenkmäler fotografiert und die Fotos hochgeladen werden. Du hast an einem der vergangenen Fotowettbewerbe teilgenommen. Deshalb laden wir dich ein, dieses Jahr wieder mitzumachen. Wir freuen uns auf deine Fotos!

Dieses Jahr ist es aufgrund der Ausgangsbeschränkungen schwieriger aktuelle Fotos zu machen, deshalb läuft der Wettbwerb dieses Mal zwei Monate. Es sind wie immer viele spannende Motive überall in Deutschland zu finden. Neben Naturdenkmälern wie alten Bäumen oder Naturparks im Gebirge und am Meer können Geotope wie Quellen und Aufschlüsse oder FFH-Gebiete fotografiert werden, um sie unter anderem in der Wikipedia zu dokumentieren. In den letzten Jahren sind zahlreiche neue Listen und Artikel in diesen Bereichen entstanden, für die wir uns über Fotos freuen. Als Einstieg für die Suche nach Motiven hilft diese Übersichtsseite. Weitere Informationen erhältst du hier und vor allem unter dieser Anleitung. Falls du im Moment nicht wie sonst in die Natur fahren kannst, findest du vielleicht in den Tiefen deiner Festplatte oder auf dem Smartphone noch interessante Fotos.

Du möchtest am Wettbewerb teilnehmen, dir fehlt aber die richtige Technik? Dann wirf doch mal einen Blick in den Technikpool und das Technikleihportal von Wikimedia Deutschland! Dort findest du Kameras, Objektive und Zubehör verschiedenster Art. Sollte noch Technik fehlen, die deiner Meinung nach angeschafft werden sollte, freut sich Wikimedia Deutschland über dein Feedback zum Technikpool.

Außerdem laden wir Dich ein, vom 1. Mai bis 31. Juli 2020 an der Vorjury teilzunehmen. Diese bewertet die hochgeladenen Bilder und ermittelt so gemeinsam mit der Jury, die im August tagen wird, die Sieger von Wiki Loves Earth 2020 in Deutschland. Das Vorjurytool ist hier bald freigeschaltet. Du benötigst dafür nur deinen Benutzernamen und das Passwort.

ich schreibe dich an, da ich wir momentan explizit Menschen suchen, die sehr aktiv in Wikimedia Commons sind, um guten Input für ein Forschungsprojekt zu geben.

Für ein aktuelles Forschungsprojekt suchen wir aktive Community-Mitglieder in Wikipedia, Wikidata und Wikimedia Commons, die Lust haben eine Umfrage auszufüllen und an einem Interview teilzunehmen. Ziel der Forschung ist es Mitmachmöglichkeiten und Zugangswege für neue Ehrenamtliche in den Wikimedia-Projekten zu identifizieren. Dazu möchten wir von den Erfahrungen der bereits aktiven Community-Mitglieder lernen und Erfolgsfaktoren für die Beteiligung in den Projekten herausfinden. Die Teilnahme umfasst das Ausfüllen einer Vorab-Umfrage, eine Selbststudie und ein Interview.

’’’Bei Interesse an einer Teilnahme fülle einfach diese Umfrage aus.’’’ Die Teilnehmenden an den Interviews werden auf Basis der Antworten ausgewählt, um möglichst viele, unterschiedliche Perspektiven berücksichtigen zu können.

Alle ausgewählten Interviewpartnerinnen und Interviewpartner erhalten als Dankeschön einen Buch- oder Fotogutschein i. H. v. 25 Euro.

Leite diesen Aufruf auch gerne an andere Menschen weiter, von denen du denkst, dass sie interessante Erfahrungen zu Commons teilen können. Commons Photographers User Group: Meeting on September 26 and other stuff

I've got a quick update for you, containing three items:

• I’d like to invite you to our group’s second Virtual Meeting on Saturday, September 26, 2020. As last time, this meeting will serve as an opportunity to get to know each other better, share learnings, and connect in times of the global COVID-19 pandemic. If you'd like to present, please add your name and the proposed topic to the list on the talk page.
• Also, I'd like to start a conversation about how we should be sharing responsibility for the user group going forward. I'd love to get some help when it comes to organizing things and I'm convinced that we can achieve more if a couple of people helped with coordinating stuff.
• Finally, the Wikimedia Foundation has asked me to spread the word about their latest survey: Universal Code of Conduct Survey. The goal is to create a safer environment on Wikimedia projects and the Foundation gathers feedback prior to coming up with a first draft.

Next Commons Photographers meeting featuring large format photographer Ben Horne

Dear member of the Commons Photographers User Group,

I'm happy to invite you to our next virtual meeting on Saturday, March 20, at the usual time. As I mentioned during our last get-together, I'd like to invite external guests every now and then, given that it seems good to expand our view and learn something from someone outside our community.

Our first external guest, Ben Horne, will talk about large format wilderness photography, followed by a question-and-answer session. Ben is maybe one of best known contemporary large format photographers in the United States. On his excursions to national parks, he shoots 8×10 film and talks about his adventures on his YouTube channel which has attracted more than 48,000 followers so far. He is YouTube's first, and longest active landscape photography vlogger and I'm thrilled that he has agreed to join our next meeting and talk about his experiences.

For the next WikiAfrica Hour, we would like to discuss the role photography plays within a Wikimedia context. With this in mind, and given your experience, I would like to invite you as a special guest speaker on this 2nd episode of WikiAfrica Hour. This episode is slated for 28st May 2021 at 4pm UTC.

Wiki Loves Africa has just finished. Wiki Loves Earth has launched. African Wikimedians are enthusiastic participants, but Wikimedia Commons and the photography world are complex sectors. We would like the WikiAfrica Hour discussion to provide insight into how Wikimedia Commons works ‘behind the scenes’.

UCoC Enforcement Draft Guidelines Review

The announcement is about the draft of the enforcement guidelines of the Universal Code of Conduct (UCoC). The draft will be discussed and commented on for about two months so that the drafting committee can revise it according to the suggestions coming from the movement. Universal Code of Conduct - Enforcement draft guidelines review  The Universal Code of Conduct Phase 2 drafting committee would like comments about the enforcement draft guidelines for the Universal Code of Conduct (UCoC). This review period started the 17 August 2021.

Community and staff members collaborated to develop these draft guidelines based on consultations, discussions, and research. These guidelines are not final but you can help move the progress forward. Provide comments about these guidelines by 17 October 2021. The committee will be revising the guidelines based upon community input.

Everyone may share comments in a number of places. Facilitators welcome comments in any language on the draft review talk page or by email. Comments can also be shared on talk pages of translations, at local discussions, or during round-table discussions and conversation hours.

There are planned live discussions about the UCoC enforcement draft guidelines: 

Wikimania 2021 session (recorded 16 August)  Conversation hours - 24 August, 31 August, 7 September @ 03:00 UTC & 14:00 UTC Roundtable calls - 18 September @ 03:00 UTC & 15:00 UTC

The facilitation team supporting this review period hopes to reach a large number of communities. Having a shared understanding is important. If you do not see a conversation happening in your community, please organize a discussion. Facilitators can assist you in setting up the conversations.

Discussions will be summarized and presented to the drafting committee every two weeks. The summaries will be published here.

Quick update on behalf of the Commons Photographers User Group

Dear member of the Commons Photographers User Group,

I hope you're well and enjoy taking photos for Wikimedia Commons. Here are a couple of quick updates on behalf of our group:

• Our next virtual meeting will take place on Saturday, August 27. At this point we have two presentations lined up:

• Suitable! Unsuitable! How to choose photos for a Wikipedia for children, “Klexikon” (Ziko)
• The aperture and its (less known) effects (XRay)

You can sign up for the event on this page: Virtual Meeting on August 27, 2022. – Given that we can accommodate more speakers, I'll invite you to get in touch with me in case you'd like to present on the 27th. You can reach me any time on my talk page or by sending a quick email.

• Also, we now have a page for local events organized by members of our user group: Local events 2022. Please check it out and consider organizing an event yourself!
• And finally, we're planning on offering a Post-processing Workshop on October 8. Please save the date; an events page with more information will go up later.

You're invited to provide input…

Dear fellow member of the Commons Photographers User Group,

At our last meeting end of August, we talked about getting in touch with the Wikimedia Foundation and offering our help for improving Wikimedia Commons. Today, I invite you to provide your input on a draft open letter to the Foundation. Over the course of the next ten days, we'll further improve the text together, before inviting people to sign it. If you're interested in providing input, please engage in the discussion on the talk page of the draft.

Question from the CPUG Board

Dear user group member,

I'm writing you to today on behalf of the board of the Commons Photographers User Group. The past year has been a busy one for us. In 2022, we've had more activities than ever before in the history of our group and you'll find an overview on our group's page.

With that being said, 2022 was also a year of learning for the current board members. Most of us hadn't been involved in running the Photographers User Group and we spent quite some time on getting used to our new roles. We all feel it was a steep learning curve.

That's why, at our last board meeting, we decided to ask our members whether they'd be ok with us serving for another year. Extending our board duties to the end of 2023 would allow us to continue the work we've started this year, and to benefit from the knowledge we've built over the past twelve months.

However, in the end, it's up to you and the other members of our group to decide whether such an extension of our board term should be granted. I invite you to voice your opinion on this page:

Most memorable shot 2022 / Wikimania 2023

I wish you a Happy New Year! As it has been our tradition at the beginning of the new year for a while, we're sharing our most memorable shots of the past year with each other. Commons Photographers User Group: Board Elections 2023

Dear member of the Commons Photographers User Group,

in preparation of the 2023 board election of our group, we invite you to take a look at the following page:

The timeline for the 2023 election will be

• September 15 – September 30: Applications for the election committee
• October 1 – October 9: Vote for election committee (ideally comprised of three members)
• October 10: Election committee starts work
• October 20 – November 9: Nomination phase for candidacies
• November 10 – December 10: Elections
• December 15: Results announced

In the first step we ask you to be part of the election committe. Please add your name on the Election Page.

Flickypedia soft launch and a huge thank you

Dear fellow Commons photographer,

I hope this message finds you well. As you might already know, the Flickr Foundation has been busy creating a new Flickr-to-Commons bridge (“Flickypedia”) this year. After a successful demo at the GLAM Wiki Conference in Montevideo, the Flickr Foundation team is now inviting all members of the Commons Photographers User Group to be the first to review their alpha, reporting any technical issues or other feedback via the Flickypedia project talk page.

At the same time, this message is an opportunity for me to thank you for your trust and support over the past couple of years. Since 2017, we've grown into being one of the largest user groups in the Wikimedia universe. I've tremendously enjoyed interacting with all of our members when it came to joint photowalks at Wikimanias, virtual Zoom meetings where we covered a wide variety of photography topics, as well as our annual “Most memorable shot of the year”, among many other events. As I'm not running for an official position in our current board election, this will be my last message on behalf of the user group to you. Thanks for all the happy moments we shared together over the years! I hope you'll continue creating free images for the millions of people we serve through Wikipedia and Commons.
