What I can suggest is find such a law as your source, like http://www.prezident.sk/?statny-znak or http://www.minedu.sk/data/USERDATA/Legislativa/Zakony/63_1993.pdf. Suggested display[edit]

Hi, would you look to Template talk:Svtest where I tried to alter the display line - above new test version, below old version. It is a bit long, may be you have ideas to impress the fact shorter. -- sarang사랑 13:09, 31 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry, I did not intend to ask you for the template code; I just wanted your opinion whether replacing "reduction ratio=1234" by "now 12.34% of former file size" is better to understand.
I am looking for a shorter text than "of the former file size" that can be understood as well - short but expressed in good English. Something like "12.34% of former size" or "reduced to 12.34%". I know you for always good ideas. -- sarang사랑 08:54, 5 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

xmlns missing[edit]

Hi Anon! Some of yours crosses, like File:Cross-Crosslet-Heraldry.svg, don't have the xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg" inside the svg tag. The mediawiki still render them, the inkscape/Corel draw opens them normally, but the browsers don't (firefox or chrome). As the mediawiki is not rendering news uploads without the xmls (like File:United States Income Distribution 1967-2003.svg), and as the SVG namespace declaration must be provided, it's seems to be a good thing re-upload them. I'd like to do this (when I have more time), but I'm tempted to centralize them at (0,0) and use relative coordinates (rather than absolute) =P. Giro720 (talk) 17:43, 10 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the answer. Actually, even with <!DOCTYPE svg PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD SVG 1.0//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/2001/REC-SVG-20010904/DTD/svg10.dtd">, MediaWiki is not rendering the file anymore (I've tested it at File:Test.svg). I don't know if I was dubious (or if my English was poor), but I was not complaining. Your work with svg is really great =). Giro720 (talk) 14:21, 14 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, you are right. Probably it's related with this issue experienced by users of Adobe Illustrator. Maybe the renderer is ignoring the whole DOCTYPE declaration. Giro720 (talk) 14:57, 14 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

![edit]

May be the name of File:Flag-map of historic Palestine.jpg was not appropriate for that file, despite the fact that I explained it in detail. However, I think this was an excuse, not a reason, to reupload, actually delete, the file. Anyway, the purpose of the file was to show a point of view, not a knowledge, and I think you've already understood that!--Maher27777 (talk) 23:15, 11 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Evil "flow"[edit]

Yes of course, by the time I read your note I had removed the offending flow. This happened to me before, and it was hard to track down the first time since the empty flow does not render anything in Inkscape. The fix was to pop up the xml editor, select the flow and delete it. Then upload again. We do need better guidelines on using Inkscape. The other gotcha I run into all the time is the default font "Sans" renders differently than in Wikimedia, resulting in ugly labels on diagrams. (I am working on illustrating some pathetic technical articles.) Evidently this is a "feature". So I picked the first explicit font out of the list that I recognize, which is Arial, but that is not in the Meta:SVG fonts list? So maybe I should use Helvetica instead. I do not need the svg to be portable, just render on Wikimedia so that it can be read in articles. Thanks for any help. W Nowicki (talk) 17:27, 15 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry, I do not speak English. I did not understand what you mean by "Do you want it to have a white field (background)?". Refers to the edge of the image (that)? Marcos talk 13:37, 16 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks. I'd be willing to do the manual work but haven't got my head around the appropriate templates just yet. Hello, AnonMoos!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Baalat Sidon & Punic sarcophagus of Goddess[edit]

The Baalat Sidon image is based on an actual stele, so it doesn't have nothing to do with the "Christianization" or "Paganization" of the symbol itself. It's just a symbol of the goddess Tanit.

The woman depicted on the Punic sarcophagus could be a goddess, or high priestesses of the goddess. The dove was one of Tanit's many symbols. The woman is holding a small dove-shaped incense burner, her skirt is shaped like two folded wings, and her headdress is shaped like a bird's head. Several of these Punic sarcophagus have been found in Europe, and all of them have the god Baal (Hammon, El, Elohim, Yahweh) and the goddess Baalat (Tanit, Astarte, Anat, Athirat, Asherah) together as the archetype of the divine couple. Many scholars believe that the Carthaginian god Hammon was modeled after the original god El, that is shown holding a bowl in one hand with the other hand raised. I don't think there's any question as to who they really are. --Camocon (talk) 22:36, 2 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

  • The male figure found on this sarcophagus File:Sarcophages puniques musée Louvre.jpg in Italy, is almost identical to the one found in Spain File:Sarcophages carthage 1.jpg. The female is clothed like the virgin Mary, and has been defaced (like so many other goddesses turned whores by the one-god fanatics). The sarcophaguses are horizontal, but they are standing on a platform in living form, not a death position. Carthaginian priests were clean shaven, so the males depicted are definitely not priests. The only reasonable conclusion, is that they're the tombs of Carthagian royalty (king and queen) portrayed as the god and goddess. --Camocon (talk) 17:05, 4 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

And the islands between Puerto Rico and Trinidad and Tobago (Anguilla, Guadeloupe, Dominica, Grenada...)? Are not western countries? Assyrian stars[edit]

The stars look fine. The wavy lines in the cross-bars between the points, are "rays of light," as a twinkling star appears to the human eye. The Assyrians knew the sun was the largest star, so they placed the Shamash (Sun god) star inside of a circle, because it's round like the sun. I havn't seen any reliefs of a 6 or 8 point star in a circle, so they're probably just stars, and not the sun. You should create a category for Babylon-Assyrian Stars. --Camocon (talk) 00:55, 12 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Update: I just saw the eight point star in a circle. --Camocon (talk) 01:32, 12 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Anonmoos - DadrianT,EsqMCIHT here[edit]

Thanks for your advice about The Structure of Freemasonry graphic. According to the signature at the bottom right, it is by Everett Henry. And, according to http://georgian-south.org/ freemasons lodge, it is a painting by Everett Henry that appeared in LIFE, vol. 41 no. 15 October 8th 1956 (Time Inc., Chicago); which means its over 50 years old at the very least. I'm new to editing in Wikipedia, and this is one of the first graphics I have uploaded, so I'm not yet familiar with the copyright issues. But a Google Images Searches reveals quite a large number of copies of this work many published by Freemason Lodges / Grand Lodges. Consequently I doubt that whoever has the copyright of this work will take issue about me uploading it to Wikimedia Commons or to Wikimedia Commons having it in their graphics library. But I get the point you are making - I need to understand what the copyrighting jargon Wikimedia uses actually means and which applies to this particular graphic. So I wont forget to swot it all up and amend the copy-right class of this graphic as soon as I have figured out what it is. DadrianT,Esq (talk) 03:31, 14 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

France "t-shirt"[edit]

Thanks for the info. In fact, I know that sports uniforms are usually called "jerseys" (I'm not an English native speaker and sometimes things may be confusing when I have to translate some specific word to Spanish). On the other side, those old uniforms were not made of polyester, so I did not know how to call them... until I checked on other Wiki pages which referred to this topic (p.e. All Blacks) and I saw that the word "jersey" is used although the uniforms were made of cotton. Therefore, I'm going to change the description. Fma12 (talk) 18:29, 2 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Images of clothing and copyright under US law[edit]

To reiterate what I said here in response to your concern, you are correct in noting the fundamentally utilitarian status of clothing as useful articles under U.S. copyright law. However, despite lobbying by the fashion industry for a limited copyright term for the non-essential aspects of clothing, Congress has yet to pass legislation that would specifically allow that. So images of garments, whether on a body or not, are perfectly free for us to store here as long as the image creator has licensed it appropriately. SVG path question[edit]

On March 1 we talked about circles (at User_talk:Sarang#SVG path question). I just detected that an imperfect circle can be closed with the "z" command, e.g. <path stroke="#000" fill="none" d="M250,20a200,200 0 1,1-1,0z"/> (for width=height=500). Of course it is still not mathematically correct to close the gap with a straigt line (if you see it so sophistic), but with a gap small enough it may be beyond the inexactness of SVG itself. -- sarang사랑 17:27, 9 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Stefan4 (talk) 13:49, 6 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

While you make a good point regarding Syria, which I completely overlooked, I stated right in the description that I acknowledged it as a politically-charged graphic and recommended against its unwarranted use. As a Jew, I do take great offense to your comment that it expresses a desire to "throw the Jews into the sea". I do not have to support genocide against my own people to oppose the genocide of Palestinians or the existence of the State of Israel. Regardless, it was a graphic I made for my own purposes completely unrelated to Wikimedia, but I figured since I used Wikimedia graphics to make it and Wikimedia Commons is, after all, supposed to be a free image repository, that I'd put it up here as well. It was not intended to offend you or anyone else: it is an intellectual exercise, not a call for ethnic cleansing. I hope you can appreciate the difference. Mnmazur (talk)

If you want to submit a move/rename request (I'm not entirely sure how that sort of thing works here, not actively contributing to the community) for something like that, be my guest, I'll even support it. I find your claim that the idea of that land being "Palestine" is somehow unhistorical a bit odd, considering the general area has been known as Palestine for some time, though I do recognize the modern conception that is the Palestinian flag has not been around as long. Perhaps File:Flag map of irredentist Palestine.svg would be better? The name I chose was somewhat arbitrary, though I did opt to use the term "land of Palestine" (as opposed to simply "Palestine" or reference to a political entity such as a "State of Palestine") specifically to clarify its nature.
Regardless, all this is beside the point entirely. If I'd've used the same map with an Israeli flag and named it "File:Flag map of the Land of Israel.svg", I can guarantee I'd not be being berated and accused of wanting to "throw the Palestinians into the sea". No one would have said I made a "bigoted racist anti-Arab hate graphic". Yet, as I'm sure you're aware, the term "Land of Israel" is, like "Palestine", a historic term, and the flag of Israel is a modern conception.
So please, spare me the lecture on bigotry and racism. If someone wants to use my graphic or a graphic like it to express a desire to wantonly murder Jews, take it up with them. If someone wants to use it to oppose the existence of the State of Israel, then you can take it up with me. Or better yet, don't, because quite frankly, until my political beliefs start interfering with the quality of images I produce, they are of little relevance to this project. Mnmazur (talk)
If you want to go down the politics road, you're going down it alone. I'm done discussing this matter. Mnmazur (talk)
File:Flag map of the land of Israel.png
This image of a Greater Israel would be considered offensive to Jordanians as it would deny Jordan its statehood. However it represents a real irredentist claim by promoters of a Greater Israel.
This image of a Greater Hungary would be considered offensive to Slovakians as it would deny Slovakia its statehood, to Croatians because it would annex Croatia's capital of Zagreb and much of Croatia, to Romanians because it would annex Transylvania, and to Serbians because it would annex Vojvodina. However, it too represents a real irredentist claim by promoters of a Greater Hungary.
Everybody, remember that it is an irredentist map. And irredentist maps show the territorial claims of specific nationalists, as such irredentist maps can be considered offensive or aggressive towards peoples who do not accept them. This image of an Arab Palestine is supported by Palestinian nationalists and thus it is a valid file to represent irredentism, renaming both it and the "File:Flag map of the Land of Israel.svg" to something like "File:Flag map of Arab Palestine irredentist.svg" or "File:Flag map of Greater Israel.svg" would resolve the issue.--R-41 (talk) 15:31, 18 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

AnonMoos, thanks for your work fixing the problems with File:Fission & Fusion.svg. I see that you changed the image a bit (for instance removing the rasterized shadow behind the arrows). Re: Animated SVGs[edit]

Yeah but I guess having one SVG version kept here can be nice. We have some XCF files uploaded which cannot be displayed directly currently and their corresponding raster images are provided for display. I guess animated SVGs are just like that. Liangent (talk) 11:27, 12 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

That file was created as vector so exporting as raster seems a degrade in quality. I tend to choose a format to keep it vector and SVG seems to be the only way here. Liangent (talk) 15:16, 12 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Considering he hasn't posted a single source (which I have asked from him several times), that was a rather inappropriate thing to suggest he do. Fry1989 eh? 18:40, 21 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

In normal cases, yes I would agree with you. The problem is this, WPK has an aversion to posting sources, even when he has good ones (it can take months of pulling teeth to get him to post his), but at the same time, when he's convinced he's right, he pushes on and reverts non-stop. I've been in several disputes, but whether my changes are viewed as right or wrong, I always base my changes upon a source, and if people revert me and I haven't already posted my source(s), I then do so. My fear with WPK uploading his unsourced version of the Vaasa file, is that he will begin replacements, which would leak to a content war. Fry1989 eh? 19:12, 21 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Right, I didn't figure it out. Labels[edit]

I do not think you are right. Yes the Royal Family use a white label, but that is because there has been a charge on it. It has been standard practice with them for hundreds of years now. But that does not stop anyone else adding a label "of contrasting colour", which could just as well be Argent. The last ruling from the College of Arms was that all cadency marks (which include labels) were for a family to decide for themselves. So if they decide to use an Argent label - so be it. I think you will also find that the Royal Family use a white label not an Argent label. There is a difference and although we tend to treat them as if they were the same - they are not. I think you should revert. Kiltpin (talk) 22:32, 28 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Fox-Davis died in 1928; the latest ruling by the College was only two years ago.

About my proposed flag for Billings[edit]

Hi, I saw your comment about my proposed flag for Billings, Montana. As you know, my design has not been officially been adopted yet but I'm still working on it. If it is adopted, I still want to be able to use the flag on my userbox, User:Wolfdog406/UBX/billingsmt and have merchandise made for myself.

I just don't want someone to copy it and make merchandise from it since it is a high resolution image, however users are still free to use the flag, but for non-commercial uses except the city of Billings and me, since I am the designer.

Hi, you encouraged me to think it over. Now we have several examples, yours with dash-array, and Optical-illusion-diamonds-C.svg with dash-array combined with nested cloning, and Optical-illusion-diamonds-F.svg with dash-array combined with fill pattern. If you want to know: not touching the logic, I simplified your version to 960 bytes (not uploaded); with cloning it was 778, and with pattern 579 bytes. Each one of the three versions is a useful simplification example; they are looking identical.

I used Bryan's upload tool to upload it, and the original page on Flickr had only so much information. I would recommend a deletion if the license looks unsubstantial. I apologize for the inconvenience. *sad face* Aditya (talk) 17:17, 14 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

If in doubt, I'd recommend a deletion. Nice image though. The same goes for the rest of the images I just tagged. All were uploaded by me from flickr, going by bot instructions and the copyright status on the flickr pages. Aditya (talk) 01:51, 18 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Extremely embarrassed at my inadequacies. I believe I have already learned a lot. I don't come from a culture that follows copyright matters at any length. Therefore the lack of understanding. Generally I try not to upload anything that was not created by me. I also sought advice before uploading, which did not arrive in adequate measures. Sorry again. This looks really shameful. There seems to be a problem regarding the description and/or licensing of this particular file. It has been found that you've added in the image's description only a Template that's not a license and although it provides useful information about the image, it's not a valid license. Could you please resolve this problem, adding the license in the image linked above? You can edit the description page and change the text. Uploading a new version of the file does not change the description of the file. This page may give you more hints on which license to choose. Thank you.

SVG circles[edit]

Hi AnonMoos, to return to your SVG path question I want to present you a really good solution for most cases. You may look at Anti.svg how I close the small gap with a z command. Of course, it is not a perfect circle because a (minimal!) part is replaced by a chord, but you never will be able to see it, even when you render it in 2000px or larger. Another solution I tried was to attribute the stroke with stroke-linecap="round", but the "z"-closure makes the error better neglectable. IMHO it seems sufficient accuracy for most SVG sketches, and the gap can be reduced to a tenth of a pixel or less. sarang사랑 06:24, 25 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hello![edit]

Hi sir, I see that you are very busy, but I just wanted to thank you for fixing the New Syrian coat of arms image that I uploaded. I was just wondering, could you use that image and fix it more to make the bottom scroll that the hawk is holding say "الجمهورية السورية الحرة" (Free Syrian Republic)

One more thing, if you don't mind, could you please please please make a nice political map for "Greater Syria" based on the following image: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Truly_accurate_map_of_%22Greater_Syria%22.png This map represents what real "Greater Syria" should look like, disregarding what Anton Saadeh thinks of Iraq(Mesopotamia) being part of Syria. I put down the reasons (on the map) of why or why not an area should be part of Greater Syria. I think it's much more accurate than Anton Saadeh's ideas, and if you do make a political map of it either me or you can post it on the Wikipedia pages of "Greater Syria" and "Syrian Nationalism" as a more accurate depiction of what the real borders of Greater Syria look like.

THANKS SO MUCH! Bye! -- 05:54, 3 June 2012‎ User:Moester101

SVG-renderer on wikimedia and default chosen SVG-sizes for flags[edit]

As I just read, flags are the most heavily used SVG-images. Moreover I noticed 5 minutes ago, you got the SVG-Star due to "hard SVG work".

  • Are you a SVG-developper?
Thank you very much for the detailed answer. Achim1999 (talk) 23:00, 25 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
  • I think that the SVG-to-png rendering could be done significantly better on wikimedia. I explained the general background on the page File Talk:Flag of Iran.svg#general comments Can you control this rendering to png here on wikimedia of the default chosen png sizes of SVG-files (or point me to people who control it)?
Thanks for very short answer of the first part (pointer for the last missed). Achim1999 (talk) 23:00, 25 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for your helpful answer. Achim1999 (talk) 15:40, 26 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
  • Whom must I ask to change e.g. the default size of the flags in the info boxes such that their absolute sizes in pixel consist of many small numbers ?
I hope I will still get an answer. Achim1999 (talk) 23:00, 25 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
  • Should I lead / point the people how ask me due to these SVG-rendering problems to you?
I let it up to your behaviour whether I expect still an answer. ;-) Achim1999 (talk) 23:00, 25 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for providing images to Wikimedia Commons. Please keep in mind that images and other files on Commons must be under a free license and should be useful to the Wikimedia projects. To allow others to use your files, some additional information must be given on the description page. Most importantly:
  • Describe what it is about in a short sentence. (What does the image show?)
  • State the author and the date of creation. If you made it yourself, say so explicitly. If it is from another Wikimedia user, link to the person's local user page. Best to use CommonsHelper.
  • If you did not create the file yourself, state the source you got it from.
  • Add a copyright tag - images without an appropriate license tag will be deleted.
  • Add the image to one or more gallery pages and/or appropriate categories, so it can be found by others. To find out where an image belongs, you can use CommonsSense.

If you copied the file from another wiki, please copy all information given there and say who uploaded it to that wiki. Use CommonsHelper.

It is recommended to use Template:Information to put that information on the description page. Have a look at Template talk:Information for details of the use of this template.

Irredentist maps are by nature subjective and biased, but as long as they aren't actually represented as fact, and are openly noted to be irredentist, using the description, disputed accuracy tag, and the irredentist category, this should be acceptable. Abbasid flag[edit]

Dear AnonMoos, I like to know how did you decide that the Abbasid flag file requires deletion in Commons:Deletion requests/File:Abbasid flag.png. It is historically known that Abbasid's symbol was the black flags. And even it is known in some stories of the Umayyads while escaping from the Abbasid armies, that they see the black flags in the horizon and start fleeing. I can see why you might be upset by the sub-sub categorization. However, categories aren't used here to define things but as a route to find images. (For many people the Cross of St Peter is the satanic symbol of the antichrist who is the pope. The main role of Satanism is as a belief system imputed to enemies, such as Catholics and neo-pagans, not as a belief system actually held by believers. We should not limit editors in the concepts they may want to illustrate.) I've added "see also" to "Category:Inverted Christian cross" and "Category:Satanism" as this should help users find images while causing less offense. --Simonxag (talk) 22:03, 7 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

In the usual meaning of the phrase, a "Red Ensign" includes a Union Jack in the corner. Artifacts from operation of rsvg on a marker in SVG.[edit]

In my User talk AnonMoos wrote, '... if you had just encoded the arrowheads as simple ordinary triangles, instead of exploring the frontiers of "markers", then you could have had a working SVG file months ago ...'
It was a working SVG months ago. I've been working on other diagrams and concurrently making small adjustments to this one.

You suggest drawing each arrowhead as a triangle? Isn't the intent of a marker to automate that? Draw a line and the arrowhead comes with it. I have 14 diagrams with a total of 54 arrowheads. In the present code structure, drawing each arrowhead individually is an inefficient task. Under application of transformations, a single arrow diagram can make all the arrows; but making all the transformations will be a code overhaul.

Interestingly enough, Iceweasel 17.0.1 renders the the diagrams with no artifacts. So, if extant software is applied properly, correct rendering should be possible here. Are markers prohibited? If so, someone please cite the prohibition. Thanks and Best Regards, ... PeterEasthope (talk) 04:49, 21 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
