Our first steps help file and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki - it is really easy.

Getting help

More information is available at the Community Portal. You may ask questions at the Help desk, Village Pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons. You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing.

Goodies, tips and tricks
 • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your Graphics abilities.
 • All your uploads are stored in your personal Gallery
 • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~
 • Use the CommonSense tool to find good categories for your files (then other people can find them too!)
 • To link to an image page, write this: :Image:Foo.jpg, it makes this: Image:Foo.jpg
 • If you're copying files from another project, be sure to use the CommonsHelper
Made a mistake?
 • Did you want to rename or move a file? Simply upload the file again and mark the old one like this: Correct name
 • For more information read the full Deletion guidelines

Hello, Sammyday!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Images remarquables[edit]

--EdouardHue (talk) 20:12, 9 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Picture of the Year voting round 1 open[edit]

Dear Wikimedians,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2012 Picture of the Year competition is now open. We're interested in your opinion as to which images qualify to be the Picture of the Year for 2012. Voting is open to established Wikimedia users who meet the following criteria:

 1. Users must have an account, at any Wikimedia project, which was registered before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC].
 2. This user account must have more than 75 edits on any single Wikimedia project before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC]. Please check your account eligibility at the POTY 2012 Contest Eligibility tool.
 3. Users must vote with an account meeting the above requirements either on Commons or another SUL-related Wikimedia project (for other Wikimedia projects, the account must be attached to the user's Commons account through SUL).

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. From professional animal and plant shots to breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historically relevant images, images portraying the world's best architecture, maps, emblems, diagrams created with the most modern technology, and impressive human portraits, Commons features pictures of all flavors.

For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topic categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you can vote for as many images as you like. The first round category winners and the top ten overall will then make it to the final. In the final round, when a limited number of images are left, you must decide on the one image that you want to become the Picture of the Year.

To see the candidate images just go to the POTY 2012 page on Wikimedia Commons

Wikimedia Commons celebrates our featured images of 2012 with this contest. Your votes decide the Picture of the Year, so remember to vote in the first round by January 30, 2013.

Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee

1814 Meissonier[edit]

Merci. J'avais encore faux.--Albergrin007 (talk) 21:36, 9 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Dear Wikimedians,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the second round of the 2013 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the eighth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2013) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year were entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

There are two total rounds of voting. In the first round, you voted for as many images as you liked. The top 30 overall and the most popular image in each category have continued to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just one image to become the Picture of the Year.

Notification about possible deletion[edit]

Some contents have been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether they should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at their entry.

If you created these pages, please note that the fact that they have been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with them, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

When you're asking for a rename because of the wrong identification => you should change the description, too...
Have a nice day ;-) Wieralee (talk) 14:43, 9 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Wieralee : when the description is wrong, of course, but this is not the case here. The title of the painting is "Défense de la porte de Longboyau", but this is a part of the battle of Buzenval. So the file had a wrong name, but a right description... Sammyday (talk) 16:16, 9 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Nope. The previous name wasn't the name of the painting. It's the difference between title and description. Sammyday (talk) 18:54, 9 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. In your recent edit of this file you have removed some of the description with the words "and your opinion is useless". You are quite right assuming that the last part of the description is indeed opinion, but to label it as "useless" seems a bit harsh, and in my view not consistent with the way colleagues in this project should address each other. Anyway, you also removed information about the article where the illustration appeared, which makes your edit even less understandable. Cheers --Rsteen (talk) 14:29, 23 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

It was maybe a bit harsh, i apologize about that. But this digression was a bit inappropriate, obviously. And i didn't remove information about the article : i removed a lack of informations... "No mentions of test results of this configuration", why do you precise that ? A single drawing doesn't mean this configuration was tested. Sammyday (talk) 15:12, 23 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]
You are right, it was a disgression - and will probably not be missed by anybody else - but I do believe attempts at humour are ok once in a while. Anyway, the information about "missing information" was meant as a help for those searching for specifications in the Scientific American article mentioned. Cheers --Rsteen (talk) 08:49, 24 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

What a holy sh...[edit]

Was it absolutely necessary to delete these maps, such these Map15century.png? That's too bad. The encyclopedia is losing a lot of information.--92.77.28.174 11:03, 1 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Tell about the authors' rights ? You don't seem to understand what "losing" is. Sammyday (talk) 23:45, 1 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Sammyday: Please would you explain your unhelpful edits at Packard Eddaido (talk) 10:01, 30 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

(moved from my talk page) Category[edit]
Please read Commons:Categories : to "associate a single subject with a given category", you can add "some extra text [which] can be useful to precisely define it" - but not add a text unrelated to the category. If you want to define a single subject, and select some files, like this, please create a gallery, not a category. Sammyday (talk) 10:09, 30 July 2019 (UTC) Eddaido (talk) 22:49, 30 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Why do you believe the text you persist in removing is unrelated to the category? Eddaido (talk) 22:50, 30 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Because it's not. Four photos, a link to "The Most Comprehensive Free Online Reference for Packard Owners" (a forum, not a reliable reference), list of models, engine, chassis... this is good for an article on Wikipedia, not for a category which contains every file related to the 1940, 1939... packard automobiles. Files, not informations. Sammyday (talk) 07:22, 31 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
But it is! The link simply gives the source of the data. You seem to be misunderstanding what is on the page! Something lost in translation? I'm very puzzled. Please just revert your edits. Eddaido (talk) 04:28, 2 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]
You read Commons:Categories. There's no need data on this sort of pages. And, more important, this is not the good place to do so. So I will not revert my edits. If you want add some data to pages about Packard, see Wikipedia or Wikidata. Not Commons. Sammyday (talk) 07:40, 2 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]
So I take it you do not like the notes placed there. I'll do the revert for you. Eddaido (talk) 09:16, 2 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Sammyday (talk) 22:36, 25 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
