Re: SVG requests[edit]

Re: many of your SVG requests (such as Image:Cross-Fourchee-Heraldry.png etc.) -- in most cases, I provide the PostScript vector source right on the image page, so the SVG is almost there, but I'm not uploading actual SVG files unless <title> elements are taken off of the ban list. I filed a bug-report over a month ago ( http://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=4388 ), but nothing has been done on it, and I'm not sure where else to complain... AnonMoos 19:41, 1 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

You could try to remove <title> elements manually if they added automatically by your graphics application. --EugeneZelenko 15:21, 2 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Re: My (Melian's) SVGs[edit]

One of your SVG "conversions", Image:Cross-Fourchee-Heraldry.svg manages to transform a 4,332 byte PNG file (generated by means of a 747 byte PostScript file) into a 201,717 byte SVG file, which actually contains NO VECTOR DATA (as far as I can ascertain), but instead merely includes an EXTREMELY inefficient embedding of the original raster PNG file!!

Sorry, and you're partly right: there is a vector image, but I (rather stupidly) embedded the PNG as well. I thought I checked it before I uploaded, but obviously I was wrong. I'm not sure how to fix this (I understand you can't overwrite image files here?) but I am trying to find out [Edit: I found out - it was so obvious I didn't see it]. I wouldn't have uploaded it at all if I'd read your user page, but I'm new and an idiot and it didn't occur to me, so I went ahead and embarrassed myself.

Image:Lindisfarne StJohn Knot2 3.svg is a great graphic, but I just now uploaded an SVG file which was 86% smaller than your original upload, and still contains exactly the same vector data...

I opened and resaved that one, with the default settings, and got the same size you did. I think I used the wrong save dialog last time. Thanks for fixing it, though I'm sorry to put you to the trouble of fixing my mistakes!

Thanks for pointing those things out (even if it is embarrassing) - I've never uploaded anything anywhere before, and it's a much steeper learning curve than I anticipated. Obviously I need to check the my files more thoroughly. —Melian 12:08, 27 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the tip about using a text editor - I'm no programmer but I can at least remove the "generating program" comment, which helped a bit. I've resaved everything and re-uploaded most of them - using the right save dialog made a huge difference :) BTW, I think most of the extra rubbish was Illustrator-specific info.
As to how the images are done: I wouldn't have a clue how to use the Postscript vector source. I either re-do it myself, or use automatic tracing and then fix anything that needs it. So yes, you're quite right about how the raster image got in. I don't know what Inkscape is like these days, but Illustrator's LiveTrace tends to be very accurate for images with such clear lines. If the images arent mathematically accurate, they're certainly visually accurate even at a very large size. —Melian 16:27, 27 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

article/category[edit]

Hi AnonMoos,

I have seen, a lot of my own images (bikini, bondage, miniskirts) are now in articles and removed from the categories. I favour this, the duplicate usage of articles and categories is very strange. If there is a good and sorted article there is no need to hold the same images in categries. It was on my to-do-list but someone else has done it now :)

But you has reverted it all (?).

Do you know a very good reason for usage of articles and categories? What is the advantage of a category if an article exists? --Raymond Disc. 19:37, 21 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I already tried to contact you on User talk:CSD2006 and User talk:80.141.115.23, but you didn't bother to reply.

Your jihad against categories is really pointless and rather annoying (especially since you seem to have used several user accounts and anonymous IPs to conduct your activities). Yes, categories and articles are to some degree in competition, but adding an image to an article most definitely DOES NOT mean that the image should be automatically removed from a corresponding category, and if there's some duplication between categories and articles, then that's not inherently bad (it may be undesirable in some situations, and perfectly OK in other situations). It could be argued that redundancy of information is better than paucity of information.

Why don't you just concentrate on trying ADD your own improvements to Wikimedia, instead of trying to DELETE what other people have already previously added?? If you follow that simple principle, then I'm sure that your Wikimedia editing will result in a more enjoyable experience forn everybody (I don't particularly enjoy following around behind you and spending an hour or more of work to clean up the messes which you have created). AnonMoos 20:26, 21 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The changes User talk:CSD2006 are not from me, this is not my account. But I like what he has done. The edits of User:80.141.115.23 are mine, I have seen to late that I was unlogged. My fault. I work always under my username "Raymond de", since years. Ok, we have different views about categories. But we both want the best for Commons. More clarity/clearness for the normal users. And redundancy are most not clear. I am a software engineer and know that redundancy make problems. Maybe not today but later.
But do you think three categories in Image:Jassi im String-Tanga.jpg are reasonable? And please DO NOT RE-CHANGE MY LICENCE-TAG. Thank you. --Raymond Disc. 21:00, 21 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, I forgot IP 80.141.87.219. I have seen what User:CSD2006 has began and deciced for me to continue his work. It seems we have the same preferences. But I sign with my real name for all images. Ok, but thats not the problem. I will not waste my time in edit-wars and discussions without a solution. You are lucky with categories, ok, then you will have them. I will not revert. I will maintain the articles in future only. And I hope there will be a good software solution that melt down categories and articles. --Raymond Disc. 21:42, 21 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
As I wrote elsewhere, wiki software should provide for a merge. My idea is the category being appended to the article with the software filtering out duplicate photos. Some time ago there was a discussion here in commons on article/category merge but AFAIK we still have the status quo.--Klaus with K 16:41, 2 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Possible bug[edit]

Image:Triquetra-Double.svg is generating a blank white PNG. I believe that this is a bug with MediaWiki. I used the following CSS:

<defs><style type="text/css">
path {fill:none; stroke:white; stroke-width:2.1}
#black path {stroke:black; stroke-width:7.1}
</style></defs>

As you can see, I'm giving paths a default white colour, and then specifying black for those paths that happen to be in <g id="black">...</g>. I think that this CSS is valid. It certainly displays as I intended in Inkscape and Firefox. But MediaWiki ignores the second part.

I can easily hack around this problem, but should be submit a bug report? — Erin (talk) (FAQ) 00:46, 3 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Dude, why did you delete "Image:Anti eu.jpg" and "Image:No cross.png" with no warning on their image description pages (which I had on my watchlists), after I replaced the "SupersededSVG" templates with "vector version available" templates, and after I went into my objections in great detail at User talk:Siegele Roland, as you could have easily found out for yourself if you had looked at the image description page histories?? Your deletions were completely unjustified, and the way you've now left things, Image:No cross.svg is extremely lousy and low-quality, and is basically unfit to be used for the purposes for which it was intended (it's certainly unworthy of being linked from the Anti logos page...). AnonMoos 14:49, 29 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

It would have been good to discuss the issue on Commons:Deletion requests/Superseded and not on the discussion pages of the images. (Which I usually do not read because of lack of time.) You are welcome to make an undeletion request at Commons:Undeletion requests. --ALE! ¿…? 14:52, 29 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Dude, how am I supposed to know that a discussion is even going on at Deletion requests/Superseded, if you leave no warning on the individual image description pages? Through my powers of psychic clairvoyance?? AnonMoos 21:13, 29 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
A Superseded tag is a good indication that a discussion might be / is going on. The superseded deletion process is a shortcut unbureaucratic speedway. Please do not expect too much information. --ALE! ¿…? 08:16, 30 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Unfortunately, that's not the case -- many images have a "SupersededSVG" template on their description pages for many months without any discussion concerning their deletion taking place. And furthermore, since I was the one who quickly replaced the "SupersededSVG" templates with "Vector version available" templates (and gave detailed reasons for doing so on the talk page of the user who had added the "SupersededSVG" templates, User:Siegele Roland), therefore it would have been common sense and common courtesy to inform me of the deletion debates, and give me a chance to express my opinion there -- a courtesy which you chose for some reason to ignore. The fact that the image description pages did not actually have "Superseded" templates on them when you came to delete the images should have told you that there was some ongoing dispute in the matter, but you chose to wilfully ignore this fact. AnonMoos 19:31, 30 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Admins are only human and humans make errors. I did not "wilfully ignore" some facts. But there are too few admins working on th superseded images. So there is no much time to ponder to much time on each image. That's why deletion can be undone and that's why there is an undeletion request section now. So please calm down. --ALE! ¿…? 21:21, 1 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I'm as calm as I need to be, but I still find the fact that you messed up, but are refusing to accept any responsibility for having messed up, to be at least moderately annoying. If you weren't wilfull, then you were negligent, since there were several things which should have given you a clue, if you had been paying a reasonable degree of attention. AnonMoos 22:07, 1 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

To get to an end here, because this discussion is going nowhere, just one more point. If I did mess up, I am sorry. So please go ahead and make an undeletion request. I have a different opinion on the subject.
But what really bothers me, when someone assumes that I "wilfully ignore facts" or that I am "negligent" and that I am "not paying a reasonable degree of attention". Did you have a look at the number of open deletion requests for superseded images? Did you see the backlog and have you noticed, how many admins work on these images? Well, maybe you should get involved and present yourself as an admin and help me. You will get my support. --ALE! ¿…? 09:19, 2 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Heathenism[edit]

Hi! The term Heathen is no longer a synonym of Pagan. Today it is used to denote quite exclusively the Germanic (and the Norse) forms of Neopaganism (Norse Paganism is a subset of Germanic Paganism). If you search for the term with Google you can find lots of pages of definition like this. --Nyo 19:45, 20 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, you're right, but also in the past (in the period of the Christianization), the term Heathen was used to target only the Northern European Pagans. I know the standard meaning of the word is the same of Pagan, but it denotes the Pagans of the North. Anyway it is the umbrella term that nowadays Germanic Neopagans use to target their religion in all its varieties. You can find this concept in any (or in the majority) of the Germanic Neopagan websites you can find, and it is expressed also in some books about Germanic Neopaganism (books like [Wodening, Swain (2003). Hammer of the Gods: Anglo-Saxon Paganism in Modern Times. Global Book Publisher. ISBN 159457006X] or [Coulter, Hjuka (2003). Germanic Heathenry. Authorhouse. ISBN 9781410765857]). Well, I know how the book is called in Spanish and English, but the point is, that the files I uploaded show a German translation from the year 1648. Image deletion warning Image:Heterosexual.gif has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this image, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. If the file is up for deletion because it has been superseded by a superior derivative of your work, consider the notion that although the file may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new file.
In all cases, please do not take the deletion request personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you!

Thank you for your advice, can you tell me what is this image for? "Echo exit.PNG". The cats. are interrelated in nature and like any other classification or taxonomy, there is the issue of overlapping items or hybrids. But I will look more into it. For instance, mechanical draftsmanship, it is a subset of technical drawing. Geometry descriptive is a subset of Geometry. Abstract art is altogether other ballgame of things. You might want to review your technical drawing material and your art books. It is an idea. I like some of your drawings, they have a religious Celtic theme, I think. Flags[edit]

Well old habits clearly die hard as your attitude clearly hasnt improved. You are now patronising. Like you, I can read and clearly know that the Insignia template is not a license. However, these images are flags of a country and so therefore surely the copywright of these images resides with that country and not with the people who supposedly created them on FOTW. Sure, they may have produced the work or indeed scanned the image from another source but they are not the creators of these works. The Government of Rhodesia/Zimbabwe-Rhodesia/Zimbabwe are in fact the initial authors. As stated on the FOTW regulations page, I have attributed the "author" and where I got the image from how can they give their blessing to use an image which they arent the proper creators of? Many thanks for your apology for your language and for your continued use of a distinct attitude. Just really makes people want to come back and feel welcomed and continue working with the Wikimedia soceity. You are truly an excellent ambassador. CoA of Sainte-Mère-Eglise[edit]

Good morning,

Well, I know that the letters was different from pictures that we can find elsewhere. But the goal of wikimedia is to have pictures with free license. So, I think that it's sometimes better when the picture a little bit different from the source picture. In fact a picture of a Coat of Arms is defined by its blazon. So, I've tried to make the picture which correspond to the blazon. For the stars, I agree with your draw. But the letters A and M has to be in Capital type and the letters that you've made are more in Unciale script. As regard the roof of the church, a wheather vane or a cross, don't have any idea, because it's not blazonned. But these are the specific things that we can find on a church roof, so I had to choose one of them.

Cordially, --Manassas 08:54, 8 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Japan's chrysanthemum[edit]

Hi AnonMoos, italian stemma doesn't necessarily means coat of arms: it isn't incorrect, but it smells like a Babelfishly translation. Without any microscopical doubt, best italian way to indicate the japanese imperial family chrysanthemum emblem, the mon, is "stemma del Giappone", or "stemma imperiale del Giappone". I don't see the problem. Do you prefer "emblema del Giappone"? In italian, "emblem" it's a just quite more heraldic and aulic word than "stemma". And in the en:Wiki Japan page, the mon is called "imperial seal": "seal" is "sigillo" in italian, and for us it's an absolutely uncorrect word (for us). I've upped two versions on the mon cause the first one was too pinky and little, and this new one is much better (gold yellow colored and bigger). For any problems, write me again! BYE --panapp〜パナップ (Say what?) 16:57, 10 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, you're right. But see THIS image; it's signed as "Emblem of Italy", but it's incorrect: it's the emblem of the REPUBLIC of Italy. But Italy is guided by its republic, so the emblem of republic is the emblem of Italy itself. At the same way, the emblem of the imperial family is the emblem of whole Japan cause imperial family (representatively) guides Japan. Is it uncorrect? BYE --panapp〜パナップ (Say what?) 18:07, 10 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, don't speak about coat of arms or emblem or seal (totally incorrect, why dont' you want to change it on en:Wiki:Japan?): let's talk about SYMBOLS. Is the mon the for-any-reason symbol of Japan? YES! Exactly as the eagle is for USA and the star & gear for Italy etcetera. Don't you? --panapp〜パナップ (Say what?) 22:30, 10 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I'm sure that he's trying to do the right thing at some level, but unfortunately, he never seems to take into account the concerns of others over his own actions, and even when he's aware that other people have problems with certain categorizations, that never prevents him from plowing ahead unilaterally with yet further recategorizations in the same area -- which means that I feel I have to hit him over the head with a lead pipe (metaphorically speaking) just to get his attention. As a further example, your reply to Juiced lemon's response to your request not to "move categories up in page" seems not to be calculated to encourage further discussion.[5] Indeed, if you are right that Juiced lemon is trying to address a formatting problem in a particular skin, it would be helpful to explain why that is futile. If not, you missed an opportunity to understand the actual reason for Juiced lemon's edit. Walter Siegmund (talk) 04:50, 17 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Image deletion warning Image:Dina-gor.svg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not.

Thank you!

Removing no source tags[edit]

If you wish to propose a change in policy, do so. Otherwise, do not undo my enforcing of policy, as you are not an administrator. I have reported this already to AN. Wayland knot[edit]

Hey! Well, I tried to aproximate drawing the picture from that page: As I don't want to bother anybody with free advertisement, you can just find the source web page typing "weyland knot" in www.google.es, and click on first link you have. Looking at all It's not the same, my picture doesn't seem anything like a knob, I know, but maybe with a better source I could trace and draw it properly. I agree my pic is anything but accurate. The source article is that one (in catalan): http://ca.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nus_de_Wayland I would appreciate any help. Maybe the 'wayland knot' has more simillarities to 'trinity knot'. -- 12:58, 10 November 2007 User:Peezawaki

Tree of life[edit]

I don't understand what you mean. "Tree of life" has three separate meanings: in religion/myth/folklore (the Eden's Tree of life; the christian cross as a symbol of tree of Life, the tree under which the Buddah was born, and other examples, not forgetting Ishtar's sacred poles/trees); Kabbalah; phylogeny. The original meaning is the first one. However, I am not "changing" meanings, I am just splitting in three the confused category, that mixed all together separate meanings, by adding an adjective. However, I thank you for your warning, I did not suspect I was entering a mined region. But I should have imagined: when one touches religion... Thank you again. --User:G.dallorto 01:29, 1 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, probably you wrote me before I completed my work (actually I was in the middle of my work when you first wrote me). If you see it now after I completed it you'll realise I did not "disrupt" anything, all the images in that category are still in the same category, properly subcategorised. No links towards the category will be lost, because now the page "Tree of life" simply works as a disambiguation page between the 10 or so meanings the words "tree of life" have. Yes, I agree, when the category was first crated the different meaning of the expression should have been taken in to consideration from the beginning. But since the original creator did not, the thing had to be fixed now: yesterday I categorised some 40 images of the Tree of Life that were in Commons uncategorised, most of them dealing with mythology and folklore and religion, and the result was a complete mess between religion, phylogeny and Kabbalah. Btw, I thought the problems were coming from the religious side, not the reverse :-) . --User:G.dallorto 00:19, 3 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Personal attacks[edit]

Comments like this are not what this wiki is about. Please keep polite and calm. Giggy 09:49, 29 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Your comment is uncivil and a personal attack, in my opinion.[6] You have a history of intemperate speech that the community has tolerated, but its patience is not unlimited (see my warning above from 0ctober 17, 2007). A deletion process exists. Please use it, as you advised Jonesy22, and refrain from attacking other editors. A broad consensus seems to exist that some of the material to which you object is appropriate for Commons. Please respect that consensus.

Our work with Juiced lemon did not succeed, despite the efforts of some of the most talented administrators on Commons. We lost the contributions of an editor who, other than in his interactions with other editors, was a great asset to the project. I worry that you may be headed the same direction.

As a practical matter, if you are angry or upset, delay commenting until you feel calmer. Use the "show preview" button, ask yourself if an administrator is going to read your comment as uncivil or a personal attack, and only then hit the "save page" button. Walter Siegmund (talk) 17:36, 29 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Please respect the consensus alluded to above by Mr. Siegmund. Clearly the community disagrees with your views. If you disagree with another editor, abusing them won't solve the problem, discussing it in a civil and conscientious manner will. Giggy 08:50, 30 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, and thank your for sharing your files with Commons. There seems to be a problem regarding the description and/or licensing of this particular file. Please remember that all uploads require source, author and license information. Could you please resolve these problems, which are described on the page linked in above? You can edit the description page and change the text. Uploading a new version of the file does not change the description of the file. This page may give you more hints on which information may be missing. Please note that if you won't provide a valid license in 7 days your image will be deleted and if you upload a lot of images without licenses you may be blocked from editing wikimedia-commons. Thank you.

Anglospeak.svg[edit]

Hi, I can't understand why you think the old description was better. Leaving aside the fact that the Spanish was totally agrammatical,

 1. The old description said countries where English is official or quasi-official are in dark blue - that's not the case since, for example, Nigeria is in light blue.
 2. "Primary language" is not a good criterion because there are places - like South Africa - that deserve to be put in the same category as New Zealand, Canada, etc. because there are many native speakers there. However, English can't be described as the "primary" language there because other languages have more native speakers and also have official status.
 3. What is the point of singling out Quebec? It's not a country, AND it satisfies the most important criterion, in my view, that of having many native speakers (e.g. William Shatner, Leonard Cohen, Brian Mulroney, etc.). Joeldl 08:35, 15 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Pentagrams[edit]

I should have thought twice on that move, indeed. It evidently isnt a pagan symbol. But suppose it fits in Category:Pentacle, right? It is not a pagan pentacle, but it still is a pentagram inside a circle. --Waldir talk 21:49, 27 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I think it would be useful to have a category for the geometric notion of a pentagram inside a circle. If the name "pentacle" bears inseparable symbolic content, then perhaps a different name could be used, but I believe the definitions are somewhat unclear and ambiguous enough for us not to stick to a given meaning. The wikipedia article states that "A current draft Third Edition of the Oxford English Dictionary gives only the derivation penta + culum, and defines it as a pentagram, especially enclosed in a circle". In any case, Category:Pagan pentacle seems appropriate for neopagan images; the simply geometric ones could stay in Category:Pentacle without being associated to any symbolism. What do you think? --Waldir talk 19:30, 29 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Triskelion vs. Triskeles[edit]

What is the difference supposed to be between Category:Triskelion and Category:Triskeles? -- AnonMoos (talk) 22:26, 15 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I was not informed that there was the Category Triskelion too. Now they are bot Categories. Surely the word is greek and the correct word is "Triskeles" (from "tri"=3 and "skelès"=leg, foot). It's the symbol of Sicily. I d'ont find "Triskelion" in the greek dictionary. In the Category Triskelion there are "3-legs", but the most part of the images are surely NOT "Triskeles" ! --DenghiùComm (talk) 07:02, 16 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
It's correct to use Triskeles and not τρισκελης because only few people can read greek letters. I think that so specific words it's better to let in the original language, and not to translate. This is my personal opinion. --DenghiùComm (talk) 05:53, 17 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Cher Monsieur AnonMoos. "Tomoe is the symbol of the three cosmic principles in Shintoist cosmology and manifestations of the cosmic energy".

Ok. C'est tout en ordre, maintenant. Encore bon travail! Salutation --DenghiùComm (talk) 06:21, 29 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Game of Life SVGs[edit]

Hey, AnonMoos, thanks for the notification about UTF-16 and UTF-8. I'll try to convert them soon. Before I download them all though, I was wondering today if I'm also supposed to explicitely set the width and height of the SVGs. Obviously, it's not a necessity in the SVG specification, but I'm wondering if the SVG Rasterizer needs that information, or something like that. Do you know? Renaming[edit]

Hello, and thanks for your answer on the village pump.

Some points:
1. I deleted your note n°1 about the bad links: you read my post exactly when I was correcting it. No bad intention in this edit.
2. If you have more informations on current way of renaming, I'm interested by them !

regards, Yug (talk) 15:15, 26 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

That was not a substantive changes, since I corrected the links your sentence had no use, no subject. That's simply aim to don't lost other users in unneed sentences [without subject]. Afterwhat I came honestly -directly here on your talk page- to notice you about this non substantive change. Hard to be more frank. My talk page is also open to you for such personnal issue which have 100% no link with the section's title : == Renaming ==. We are here to improve things, you can edit what ever you want of my words, anyway: page's history are here~. A simple and happy revert is eventually possible too: that's wiki.
I my opinion your edit should be on my talkpage letting me know that you don't accept such not substantive change [I think this is inefficient but I can respect your preference], information about renaming can continue to go in this village pump section. Yug (talk) 15:41, 26 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
That's wiki : all go fast but not instantly :]
I still don't understand in what keep this 1st point is important and accurate now, but anyway, that's your preference, and as I said : I have the right to try, but I HAVE TO respect your choice. So~... That's close about this.
Can you provide me the name of your renaming bot ? I want to see how he work. That may be a new and better one ! O.O ! Yug (talk) 15:52, 26 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks ! [for the grammatical fixes] Yug (talk) 14:07, 27 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Inappropriate decategorization[edit]

A trefoil knot is not necessarily artistic or decorative, so the category "Knots in art and decoration" should not automatically be removed from all trefoil knot images. Furthermore Image:Trefoil-Architectural-Equilateral-Triangle-interlaced.png‎ is in "Category:Knots in art and decoration" not just because it's a triquetra, but because it has further interlacing... AnonMoos (talk) 23:05, 28 October 2008 (UTC) [reply]

And also, Image:Trefoil-Architectural-Equilateral-Triangle-interlaced.png is not a triquetra! AnonMoos (talk) 23:11, 28 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Hi AnonMoos, thanks for having a close look on my changes. I wish there were more people checking what others are doing!...
What do you think, would it make sense to create a subategory Category:Triquetra in art and decoration? Then some triquetra images could be categorized as being in art and decoration, others wouldn't be in the same super-category... and yet that category wouldn't be filled with all the single images. If you agree, could you sort which images should be in which category? I must admit I'm not sure where exactly to draw the line. BTW, you probably know the cat-a-lot gadget, don't you? If you don't, please let me know; it makes mass-re/decategorizations pretty quick. Thanks again, Ibn Battuta (talk) 20:23, 29 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

What I forgot to say before is that some triquetras are not knots at all -- a triquetra can be depicted in interlaced or non-interlaced form, and the non-interlaced form (e.g. Image:Flag_of_Kashiwazaki,_Niigata.png, Image:Triquetra_on_book_cover.jpg etc.) is not knotted. I'm not sure what was wrong with the categories the way they were originally... AnonMoos (talk) 22:30, 3 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi AnonMoos, I'm not saying anything was "wrong", just that is could be improved given that the category size has increased over time: When so many single files are together in one category, it's more user-friendly to include them in the same category, so that people have direct access to all of them while the superordinate category remains less crowded. I don't know if the triquetra is always a knot or knot, i.e. if designs like the one you mentioned are just intentional simplifications of a knot (but still refer to the knot, just without explicitly indicating the three-dimensional structure) or not. And Wikipedia unfortunately doesn't tell us either. (As an aside, I'm not even sure the standard form is really a "knot", but that obviously depends on the definition of a knot and I won't go there.)
If it's not always a knot, as with the original issue, it would make sense to me to either categorize category:Triquetra where most triquetras belong (compare category:Triquetra being in category:Trinity symbols although not every triquetra symbolizes trinity; or category:Knots being in category:Rope although not all knots are made of rope) or to use subcategorizations (either for both knotted and unknotted, or probably more user-friendly would be just one subcategory, e.g., category:Triquetra (flat) or something a bit more understandable). Regards, Ibn Battuta (talk) 14:12, 4 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Re: Please allow different image versions to compete on their own merits[edit]

I don't wont "unilaterally decide" wich cropping to use in this image, as a matter of fact I would like to know if my cropping is more suitable in comparison with mars symbol. If not, anyone can easily roll back the original image, like you have done. That's all. If you are sure that some templates or some pagination would be wrong with my image, than you got a good reason for roll back the old image. Otherwise you done it without cause. Regards, F l a n k e r (talk) 18:56, 12 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Yes and so? You've reverted the image, I don't see the problem. I've only ask for you your point, because I don't understand it. Now you have told me (in a bad manner, but it's OK). I repeat myself, where is the drama?
Regarding your appreciacion: sorry, I make two mistakes over 1300 (or perhaps more... see my gallery) images I've upload. So we have an error of 0,001%. I think I'm "observant enough to notice when I upload invalid images" ;). Adieu, F l a n k e r (talk) 14:10, 14 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Looks like it's okay according to the photographer, and he did put it under a license where we can edit it, just make sure you properly credit him with the appropriate tags and links: http://mjranum-stock.deviantart.com/journal/12259531/

I'm also mulling on using some of his other pictures. After a bad experience with Ford Motor Company's bizarre licensing practices and fighting the admins here over common sense, i'm abit apprehensive in searching further in seeing what else can be used on Wikipedia. --293.xx.xxx.xx (talk) 04:46, 30 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

 • Hmmmmm.....the image is rated as "Mature content" so thats a reason why you can't access the page. The linkage to CC on the image page goes to this: [10]. [11] [12] [13] Looks like he's happy with the upload. And seeing that you have better knowledge of me in the Gorean subject matter, it might be a boon for the articles related to Gorean (theirs two more pictures in his stock page of this model (and maybe a few more given the subject matter), but I don't wanna upload it given your concerns). Do you wanna e-mail him about the Gorean Pics/Permission or should I? I tried a few drafts, but I have this feeling that I will insult him rather than getting a clear answer.--293.xx.xxx.xx (talk) 00:11, 5 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

 • Well, I got good news and bad news. Good news, I touched base with him, and he's okay with it. The bad news is that he insists we don't download his stuff from deviantArt. Instead, he'll provide better quality "upgraded" images, provided we ask first, identify what we want in the gallery, don't go overboard with the requests, and give him adequate time to do the job. I suggested that this would be a good way for him to get some free "exposure," but he insists on providing his best work forward. The images on deviantArt is "raw" and unedited/unphotoshopped. I did a quick ring around, and I noticed 4 potential Gor images that you might wanna look at. But i'm gonna wait first on this Gor image and a gas-mask image that I uploaded first and see how it works out. I'm probably gonna go the ORTS route and have a copy of the e-mail correspondence on file indicating the CC license so that there is no question about his intent. --293.xx.xxx.xx (talk) 09:36, 5 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Re:[edit]

Moos, it is not a matter of which image is better. It is a matter of imposing a personal version of a blazon, rejected by whole a comunity in WP:PT and clearly promote an unsteable behaviour. The images are differents, and the newer one is already uploaded somewhere else. Really, I cannot understand why no administrator here protect the original file or warn the other user.

I have already tried the official channels here, showed the official versions used by the respectives governments, and nobody cares. Just check the same behaviour with the other blazon, which has the same quality of the new one: it is unjustifiable. I am really upset. --Tonyjeff (talk) 15:11, 10 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

As I have said, it is not a matter of get any image better, but an user behaving not in good faith. Actually, the low quality image was being used with no problem. But I agree with you: I should not try so hard to call the attention of the admins – they should make it by their own, as they are supposed to. It is amazing this show of irresponsibility. --Tonyjeff (talk) 16:41, 10 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Conflict with Erik Baas[edit]

AnonMoos; May I offer you some advice, please? You persisted in calling Erik Baas "dude" after he politely requested that you not do so.[14][15] Don't do that. If you are having a disagreement, it is best to refer to the other party by his/her full username. Erik Baas and you are both trying to improve Commons; please don't refer to good faith efforts, however misguided in your opinion, as vandalism.[16] It is not helpful or kind. In my opinion, Erik Baas was correct in thinking that you were looking for administrator involvement in your post on Administrators noticeboard (although you addressed policy and guideline issues that are better discussed on the relevant talk pages and dismissed the responses that you received).[17][18] Finally, if your topic headings were neutral, the reader would be more likely to examine your arguments carefully, rather than dismissing them as a rant or polemic.[19][20] Walter Siegmund (talk) 19:20, 16 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Erik Baas and AnonMoos, please desist and let matters cool off at least 24 hours. Your discussions are not fruitful at this time, in my judgement. I've commented on the behavior of AnonMoos on my talk page.[22] Please heed this warning, or be blocked. Thank you. Walter Siegmund (talk) 01:08, 17 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry, I don't understand what you mean by "turning up the JPEG "quality" setting all the way to 100". As it happens, I downloaded the TIFF version of this particular image, so that Villon's caption at the bottom would be readable (the LOC staff didn't get it quite right). - Mu (talk) 21:18, 20 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

That's great - less bytes, better quality. I downloaded it again on my computer and I see now that some sort of glitch must have occurred when I did it the first time. Thanks! - Mu (talk) 12:02, 21 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

in discussing the deletion request of the file. I submitted undeletion request here. I guess it might get clossed as rapidly as the deletion request was, but maybe you will have the time to state your opinion. Thank you.--Mbz1 (talk) 12:46, 27 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

AnonMoos and Mbz1, thank you for your support. Conan (talk) 12:50, 27 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Cosplay speedies[edit]

Actually, it's derivative work. You can't use any of these images of people wearing character-like clothes, dolls, etc. That would be fair use, which is not allowed here. AnimeFan (talk) 07:41, 3 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Why US law? AnimeFan (talk) 07:57, 3 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Then explain me why Commons doesn't accept fair use? It's allowed by US law. Anyway, not all servers are in the US. So, US-law does not mean anything. AnimeFan (talk) 03:46, 4 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thumbnails on VP[edit]

I'm not sure why you have an objection to anything larger than thumbnails on the village pump. But please at least check the formatting when you make changes like that, it ended up with 2 images displaying in a different order which would be a bit confusing as I referred to the first image etc! :-) --Tony Wills (talk) 22:25, 4 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I'm unconvinced about the thumb argument, the page is that long that it must be a real pain for people viewing on those sort of devices anyway :-). I think the error was that you missed one, so the thumbnail defaulted to the right side of the page, and the second image defaulted to the left side, leaving them in the wrong order! I had made the images large enough so that people could see the detail I was talking about without switching from the VP page to each image page. Anyway, it's of no great importance as the thread is a bit old, and no one else seems interested anymore ;-) --Tony Wills (talk) 08:48, 5 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the help with Arms of Wales. Kind regards. ~Geaugagrrl talk 16:18, 5 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hi !

Beforehand, sorry for my english.

I've seen that you have reverted my version of this file. Don't be sorry, the size isn't a problem in SVG, just some numbers to change ^^. But I haven't understand why "new version won't display as well at small sizes". Can you explain and give some example ?

Hello, AnonMoos!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

File:Taming-shrew-1815.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

I trust we can at least agree that this is made redundant by the JPEG version. Adam Cuerden (talk) 23:47, 17 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Deletion request[edit]

The first paragraph of your comment on COM:DR is an attack on another editor.[23] The first sentence of the second paragraph is pertinent to the discussion, but it isn't necessary to mention the nominating user in the second. AnonMoos, you've been warned previously.[24] If you have evidence of a violation of policies or guidelines by another editor, you may report it (with diffs) on the appropriate subpage of COM:AN, but other pages are not to be used to discuss the perceived failings of other editors. Please try to be more mellow and don't move disputes from other wikis to Commons. Thank you, Walter Siegmund (talk) 03:34, 18 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
