Thank you[edit]

Thank you Anna for your help. I finally managed to do it.I registrated today and I am having a difficulty with the different topics. I hope i will solve them after a while. Best regards Irini

Hello Irini,
You're welcome - and feel free to ask if you have any questions. One more (hopefully useful) advice: You can sign your comments on talk pages by writing four ~ (~~~~), which will be automatically transformed into your username (with a link to talk page) and a time stamp, by either writing the four ~ manually or using the sign symbol above the edit window ().

Re: Photo Challenge Leaves[edit]

Hello Anna reg,
Oh, Ok. That's too bad, but I understand. I forgot or didn't know that submissions were up to UTC midnight. It was still November for me when I submitted them. But that's all right.
Thank you for your message anyway.
Best wishes, Mateus S. Figueiredo (talk) 02:08, 1 December 2014 (UTC).[reply]

It is included into all challenge rules (UTC) - but few people read those rules and you weren't the only one to submit pictures after the challenge was marked as closed... ;-> thanks for your answer and good luck with the December challenges, Anna reg (talk) 03:33, 1 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Photo challenge - December[edit]

OK, the reason I only translated the titles is that I didn't have time for the explanatory texts yet. :) Einstein2 (talk) 21:38, 1 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Well, that was a good idea, as we used them to actualise the watchlist message for December. I just wasn't sure if you were still waiting if there would be any changes to the text, as I warned you that that was a possibility... ;-> --Anna reg (talk) 21:58, 1 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Finally, I did the translations. :) Sorry for being late. Einstein2 (talk) 22:25, 12 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

hello Anna reg
thanks for your help, but how can i find the administrator who worked on it.

It was -revi - I wrote the code you could use in brackets - but I just realised that I made a mistake, as you don't need to use 'user' with the {{Ping}} template (it should be {{ping|-revi}}). --Anna reg (talk) 23:21, 2 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Anna reg
if you mean the sentence below , it's done.
Submissions must be added to the top of the Entries section below.

Yes, that's what I meant - thanks for your help! --Anna reg (talk) 19:37, 6 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Re: Commons:Photo challenge[edit]

Hallo Anna,

  • interessiert mich
  • noch nicht zu verbraucht (zu oft verwendet)

Hier sind meine Vorschläge:

  1. Bahnbauwerke (Bahnhof, Eisenbahnbrücke, Stellwerk)
  2. Brunnen (Springbrunnen, Ziehbrunnen)
  3. Burgen und Schlösser (Burganlage, Burgruine, Festung, Wasserburg)
  4. Eisenbahn (Dampflok, Zug, Bergbahn, Bahnanlage)
  5. Felsengesichter
  6. Gegenlichtaufnahmen ("leuchtende" Blätter, Silhouette, Sonne, Kontur)
  7. Hütten (Holzhütte, Wanderhütte, Lehmhütte, Berghütte, Hundehütte...)
  8. Kreuze (Wegekreuz, Gipfelkreuz)
  9. Monotonie (Wiederholung, Gleichförmigkeit, Einförmigkeit)
  10. Netze (Fischernetz, Spinnennetz, Einkaufsnetz, Tennisnetz, Tornetz...)
  11. Pferde (Pferdesport, Reitschule, Wildpferd, Nutzpferd)
  12. Türme (Aussichtsturm, Fernsehturm, Leuchtturm, Kirchturm, Wasserturm)
  13. Weihnachten (Weihnachtsdekoration, -markt)
  14. Weinanbau (Weinrebe, -blatt, -traube, -berg)

Ganz liebe Grüße, Anna reg (talk) 20:39, 9 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Ganz liebe Grüße, Anna reg (talk) 15:35, 12 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Info Minox-DSC[edit]

Hallo Anna!

Templates...[edit]

Hallo Anna

I have the same problem with the templates : December/January don't accept 2014/2015 and I don't know how to write December 2014/January 2015.

In the French version they are written in English, not in French...

Have a happy end of year lol. --Llann .\m/ (Lie 2 me ...) 18:41, 26 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Llann,
I'm just trying to prepare the January theme and looking for a solution to the template problem - but only if I find something soon, as I'm not at home at the moment... ;->
Hope you're also enjoying the end of year, Anna reg (talk) 18:44, 26 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
It'll be better if we could have some snow so I won't ski...
If it's only a question of month display it's not so urgent.

Translations[edit]

Hi, Anna. I'm not sure if "Outliers" has a direct translation to spanish (I think not). Can you explain me what is about to try to find a tranlation? Regards. --Ganímedes (talk) 12:30, 29 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I forgot to ask: when you say "Household items in use" are you talkin about appliances? Thanks. --Ganímedes (talk) 12:33, 29 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry for answering only now - a combination of holidays and computer problems is keeping me away from the internet (perhaps not always a bad thing... ? ;->).
  1. About Outliers - Teles translated it to Black Sheep in Portuguese (see our talk here) - it's perhaps not really a translation in the strict sense of the word, but hopefully conveys the same meaning...
  2. About Household items - as the second sentence and the sample images show, Colin was thinking of everyday objects used at home - including but not limited to household appliances (yes, washing mashines, dishwashers, toasters, hair-dryers,... etc are included, but so are pencils, sewing pins, cookie cutters,...) - I hope that explanation helps...
Best wishes and thanks for your help, Anna reg (talk) 13:46, 5 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, sorry, I just read this today. Please, answer in my TP or link my name to be notified of the message. About challenge, I've translated "outlier" as "one different of the rest" and "appliances..." so if you link me the page I fix the translations. Thanks a lot for your work. --Ganímedes (talk) 15:58, 8 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Ganímedes, you have the links here... do you need something else? ;->
"one different than the rest" is probably okay, even though the English word allows for more than one being different - but appliances should be changed to include other items as well...
Best wishes, Anna reg (talk) 16:11, 8 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
The most straightforward translation of "outlier" is anomalía o excepción (an outlier is not always a black sheep), although there might be other possibilities such as valor atípico, valor anormal or even valor extremo. However, I do think anomalía or excepción are neutral translations that can be used here (provided that you also translate the rest of the sentence, to give it context). However, I haven't been able to find the link to update it. Could you please tell me where I can provide the translation? Best regards --Discasto talk | contr. | es.wiki analysis 16:55, 8 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, Anna and Discasto. I think link is this [1]. Thanks, --Ganímedes (talk) 17:33, 8 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Oh, I didn't understand that you were talking about the watchlist messages... Ganímedes, Discasto, if you are both fine with the new Spanish translation, I'd suggest copying the Spanish code below (including the | es = ) and asking one of the administrators looking after the watchlist messages to actualise the translation (editing the old post can be a bit confusing and is less easily seen). --Anna reg (talk) 13:51, 9 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Februar theme[edit]

LG Lesekreis (talk) 23:05, 27 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Danke.
Lg, Anna reg (talk) 13:00, 29 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Kora, twice...[edit]

Hallo Anna.

Could you please ask Kora27 in a language she can understand to choose one of her 6 last entries ? For me they are too similar... File:Endlose Treppe bei KPMG in München..jpg to File:Endlose Treppe bei KPMG in München (Detail)..jpg12 orig.jpg.

Thanks a lot . Have a nice end of week. --Llann .\m/ (Lie 2 me ...) 00:00, 12 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Sure - just ✓ done. I also asked her to try to restrict the number of entries to at the most 10 - Best wishes, Anna reg (talk) 08:51, 12 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you. Anna. My favorite of her 6 pics is File:Endlose Treppe bei KPMG in München (Detail)..jpg as in topic. --Llann .\m/ (Lie 2 me ...) 15:55, 12 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Cosplayers or storefronts ???[edit]

Should we let users submitt dressed-up "dummies" (I don't know the right word) : this one or this other ? I don't think the topics allows that ; only for people should be better : a dummy coud be dressed-up in a store just to sell some clothes so it's not the festive view of the theme.

May be I should ask that on the talk page... --Llann .\m/ (Lie 2 me ...) 15:55, 12 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]
As we added accessories (masks, headgear, hairstyles, wigs or make-up), I'm not sure if people are necessary to fit the theme... I'd be fine with them - it doesn't seem as if we'll get too many entries in this one...
Best wishes, Anna reg (talk) 16:20, 12 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]
In the sample images we don't have dummies... It's easier to shot storefronts (happyly some are awsome) then chasing cosplayers... Let's see the numbers of entries but that doesn't please me.
Whatever, I paste this on the challenges'TK. --Llann .\m/ (Lie 2 me ...) 02:46, 13 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, Anna. Is the discussion of the new thema for march open? Let me know to see if I can help you with translation. Regards. --Ganímedes (talk) 10:06, 21 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Hello Ganímedes! You are the first to open the theme discussion this month - I'll move your reminder to the photo challenge talk page to involve others too - all the more as I'm swamped with RL at the moment and fear that I won't have much time to help with the organisation of next months challenges...
Thanks for the reminder and best wishes, Anna reg (talk) 10:56, 21 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Please can you help translate the restriction for the black & white challenge: "The photos must be taken in March 2015 and a maximum of three entries can be submitted per photographer.". Sorry for the late change. Thanks. -- Colin (talk) 10:19, 28 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I have also amended the description to be clearer: "black & white photography (not a colour photo of a black & white subject)". -- Colin (talk) 10:24, 28 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I have clarified (with examples) that Commons:Photo challenge/2015 - March - Steps, Stairs and Staircases includes ladders and step stools. -- Colin (talk) 10:28, 28 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Commons:Photo challenge translation - May[edit]

Hi Anna, thanks for the new links! I added Italian translation. I also fixed "Entries" section number order for new challenges. Check it out. New translations and new templates seem to work fine. I think we are doing a good work! Thanks. --FRacco (talk) 12:37, 1 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Anna,

The Commons:Photo challenge/2015 - May - Panoramas isn't clear. It talks of a "wide field of view" and links to the wiki article that only really discusses horizontal panoramas. Yet you have two examples of vertical panoramas and one of a 360-degree. One common definition of a panorama is having a 2:1 aspect ratio (or narrower), otherwise we might get into arguments about how wide/tall it should be. The 360 is, of course, not really measurable in that way. Perhaps

The new challenge features Panoramas (Panoramic photography): wide or tall images having an aspect ratio of 2:1 or greater, and also 360° panoramas.

Commons talk:Photo challenge/themes has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this project page talk, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Re: Commons:Photo challenge translations - July[edit]

Hi Anna reg,

it's no problem, haha. I'd love to be part of the team of translators! It is a pleasure. Thank you for adding me there. And I'll be glad to help again next month. See you, Mateus S. Figueiredo (talk) 18:30, 14 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Name of Rosa cultivars[edit]

Hi Anna!

Could you please help out... is there an agreement of which cultivar name to use on Wikimedia? Personally I would prefer the actually cultivar name (or registration name) as this one is unique and global... AND redirect from, more or less, local trade and exhibition names. What is the prefered action here? Uleli (talk) 21:25, 31 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Uleli,
we tried to define some rules here - even if I immediately see some things that should probably be changed when I look at it now... registration names I find problematic are those consisting mainly of numbers - in those cases I would rather use the oldest trading name. If we use those number-names too, category and gallery redirects become important, as if people know the cultivar name of the rose they photographed (which already is a minority), they normally know trade/exhibition names. Which is why I think that common cultivar names should have a gallery linking the correct cultivar page (including a Not to be confused with Rosa 'same trade name' when necessary...
Hope that answers your question.

Re: Commons:Photo challenge for September[edit]

Thanks for the opportunity. Being fairly new at this, I am not sure what has been historically. I would like to think that the photo challenges would be to document our world. Have you ever done insects or fossils?

Wingerham52 (talk) 16:01, 25 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Wingerham52,
great to hear from you so soon!
We had Flowers and insects in May 2014, but nothing about fossils so far. The photo challenges aren't that old - we started only in December 2013. Here is a list of all challenges done so far - while the winners are archived chronologically on this page.
Hope that helps!
Best wishes, --Anna reg (talk) 18:24, 25 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I was thinking in light of the news that ISIS destroyed an ancient temple in Syria, that there should be a photo challenge to record historical places. Most of the work I do in Wikipedia is documenting historical places and structures and you wouldn't believe how many are destroyed. Some there are no pictures of them. Lost to history. In Michigan, USA, where I live a very historical church was destroyed a couple of months ago in a tornado. Luckily, one of my fellow wikipedians had documented it. So, we will always know what it looks like.

Wingerham52 (talk) 12:28, 28 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Wingerham52,
well, in September there is Wiki Loves Monuments (WLM), but it seems as if the USA are not participating this year. I just checked and that's good to keep in mind, as I was afraid of having to similar contests at the same time...
Best wishes, Anna reg (talk) 20:18, 28 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
No problem about august. I've seen it and changed, no problem. I take care of september. Thanks for all your work. Regards. --Ganímedes (talk) 01:16, 30 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Previos challenge[edit]

Dear Anna, I also overlooked translation of the August challenges. Do you know where I can go to still make the translation? Thanks! Mykola Swarnyk (talk) 04:38, 30 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I did it. Some parts are still in English and Russian, but I dont know where they are stored. Mykola Swarnyk (talk) 05:34, 30 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Hello Mykola,
I just saw that you found {{Photo challenge theme/i18n/Reptiles and Amphibians}} and {{Photo challenge theme/i18n/Personal Protective Equipment}} (which can be found by using the category Photo challenge theme templates) - I changed the title back to English as that should be automatically translated. Can you tell me which parts you don't find?

Re: Commons:Photo challenge translations - September[edit]

Thank you for the links. For me, it is much better to do the translations before the start of the challenges, so I'm glad you sent me the links at the end of the month instead of the beginning of the next month. Is there anywhere I can find the future themes, once they've been decided, so that you don't have to send me them all the time? Mateus S. Figueiredo (talk) 19:32, 30 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Mateus,
you can find the theme discussion and the results on commons talk:photo challenge - normally in a section called e.g. September themes. But it's always a bit difficult to get a decision - and the themes are therefore often only decided at the very end of the month. As I also prefer to have the translations ready before the submissions start (I am normally translating to German), I try to keep the decision making process and the page creation going - but as I finished my studies this year and therefore have quite a few changes in real life going on, I'm not sure how constant my involvement will be this year (I was hardly involved in July and August - for the first time since January 2014... ;->).
As long as I do find the time, I'll notify the translators, as my experience is that not all of them are watching the talk page - even though the team we have (I have the names collected here) is really great: constant & quick in translating the pages into more than ten languages
Posting the links to you won't be more work in that case, but as I can't promise I'll manage to do that in the future (though I'll try), it would be great if you can have an eye on the talk page - if you are motivated, you are welcome to remind everybody when it's time to decide on the next themes! ;->
I hope my somewhat long answer to your simple question explains our chaotic system without scaring you off! ;->
Best wishes, --Anna reg (talk) 20:37, 30 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Anna, I've done the voting pages. Sorry for the delay after you worked hard to get the pages read over the weekend. -- Colin (talk) 19:59, 2 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Colin, please don't worry - the pages were ready and on the challenge page on the first, which is what we are trying to manage ;->. I don't think it's necessary to have the watchlist messages ready that soon. After all, the voting pages can only be prepared after the challenge has ended - and sometimes there were things to clear up. I just wanted to remind you to get the messages run this week... (by the way Jarekt did a great job adapting/improving the {{watchlist template}} for three challenges).
Now I just have to take the time to actually participate in the 100 years later challenge (which I'd really like to...)! --Anna reg (talk) 21:31, 2 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, I haven't participated for a while either. It makes me happy to see so many new editors who are entering and voting for the challenges. -- Colin (talk) 21:40, 2 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Photo challenge rules restricted[edit]

Hi ! Why restrict the "fountains and wells" commons photo challenge to pictures taken only in September? Other themes don't have this restriction... (and in my case, I have no chance that the weather in September will allow me to redo the same picture). Thank you in advance for your answer! - Scailyna (talk) (talk) 13:23, 3 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Scailyna,
we have mainly two reasons to use time restrictions for easier challenge themes
  • to use the theme as a challenge by making people go out and try to take a picture (instead of combing through their old photos, giving an advantage to those with huge archives)
  • to prevent those challenges from having too many entries - our challenge structure (especially the voting) is not really suitable for lots of pictures (I'd say the maximum lies somewhere between 100 and 200 pictures, depending on how many voters there are - which in turn is connected to the number of entries and the number of contributors)
we have some statistics here, where we try to analyse how well something works. Of course it is a learning process for all of us.
Hope that answers your question and good luck photographing! Anna reg (talk) 17:58, 3 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for this clear answer. - Scailyna (talk) (talk) 07:42, 4 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
You're welcome. The main problem with restrictions is that you have to enforce them - I fear I'll have to check the gallery and remove pictures this weekend...
Best wishes, --Anna reg (talk) 13:54, 4 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I redirected Category:Signs with errors (which you created back in June 2014) to Category:Signage errors, because it was older and had more items in it. Just thought I'd let you know. JesseW (talk) 06:33, 22 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

November Photo Challenge[edit]

Sorry I didn't get organised enough with the October challenge themes. I've proposed a couple of themes for November and it would be good to agree and translate these + watchlist soon. Hope you can help. -- Colin (talk) 20:40, 28 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Photo Challenge[edit]

Hi Anna, Hope you are well. Missing you on Photo Challenge. I see you've been off-wiki for a while but hope you can find time to take part in the photo challenge and help with organisation. It would certainly help me to have others to help make decisions about themes and organise translations. Hope to see you around. -- Colin (talk) 22:43, 29 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Colin,
I'm well, thanks for asking. Contrary to my prediction in September, I have found hardly any time for commons during the last months - my job is taking a lot more time/energy than I thought. I'm trying to find a good balance and find the time for all the different things I'd like to do (and the commons challenges are on that list ;->), but I'm not sure how much I can promise... I'll try to tell if I'll have time or not - and I think the end of December/beginning of January should be okay.
Best wishes, --Anna reg (talk) 22:15, 2 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. Hope to see you towards the new year. Have a good Christmas! -- Colin (talk) 22:17, 2 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
