Thanks for your report. Preferably, everyone should be able to edit all pages, but some types of pages are of such high importance or are so much more likely to attract vandalism than useful edits from certain categories of users that different types of restrictions have to be imposed. In this case, a constructive edit was prevented, but that is a generally accepted side effect of this type of mechanism, and is not an indication that anything malfunctioned.
The reason for the difference between the main page on the one hand and pages in the User: namespace on the other is that different mechanisms are used to impose the restrictions. The main page is edit protected for everyone except administrators. This is a simple on/off flag that can be checked easily at any time. By contrast, editing of pages in the user namespace by users who are not logged in is prevented using an abuse filter rule.
Abuse filter rules are a much more flexible mechanism. They apply based on the specific contents of the edit. For example, the filter you triggered does have a small number of allowed exceptions, like still allowing users who are not logged in to flag problematic content in the user namespace. Therefore, the check is only performed when you make the edit, and it is not possible to know beforehand whether or not the edit you intended to make falls within one of the allowed exceptions.
I've made the edit you tried to make. Please consider registering an account, so you can make edits like this unhindered. LX (talk, contribs) 17:57, 22 March 2016 (UTC)

Prostitution by country#Europe

  • Edit kind: Hello Kroum,

my respect for the work you did, making a map of Europe, with the prostitution regulations by country.

Over the last years, a fierce debate on prostitution has been going on in France. The majority of lawmakers in France regards all prostitutes as victims of human trafficking and abuse. They also seem to think that all customers of prostitutes are rapists. Though there is a lot of misery going on in this business, there are also lonely single men that simply long for a girl friend and hard working ladies willing to take the role of substitute, in return for some cash. One could argue that adult people could make wise decisions on their own. Others fear that forbidding prostitution would increase the numbers of rape, or would force prostitutes to go underground. Anyway, yesterday, on the 6th of April 2016, The French parliament has voted in favour of a law that penalizes customers of prostitutes.

My request to you would be to change the colour of France to orange on your map, the same colour that Sweden and Norway have.

http://www.lemonde.fr/societe/article/2016/04/06/prostitution-le-parlement-adopte-definitivement-la-penalisation-des-clients_4897216_3224.html

http://www.lefigaro.fr/flash-actu/2016/04/06/97001-20160406FILWWW00283-le-parlement-vote-la-penalisation-de-la-prostitution.php

Thanks in advance! anonymous

PS: I refuse to invest much energy in Wikipedia, since I keep ending up in edit wars with people who think that following some rule is more important than simply reporting the truth. Several of my serious news updates on wiki articles were deleted within an hour after publishing, merely because I supplied a reference, containing a copy of a news flash that was on YouTube. According to wikipedia's rules, YouTube is always trash. Some nerds are too blind to see that while YouTube indeed features a lot of trash, a repost of a news item previously published by CNN or BBC (or other news media with a serious reputation) will not change into rubbish, just because it has been deleted, or put behind a pay-wall, leaving only that repost available on YouTube. Anyway, I ended up deleting my talk page and I do not read comments any-more, especially not those comments of people who assume that I would not be serious, just because I refuse to register at Wikipedia.

Odd zero log entry

While scanning for zero rated crap to be deleted, I found Special:AbuseFilter/examine/log/1249543 which shows an attempt by user:clempages to 'upload' 'File:PROFILE.jpg', however the file history only has one entry of 00:07, 1 June 2010.

There is no history or log entry against the file ; see https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=File:PROFILE.jpg&action=history and https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special:Log&page=File%3APROFILE.jpg

This upload event was captured by edit filter 149, and they hit it several times as seen at https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:AbuseLog?wpSearchUser=clempages&wpSearchFilter=&wpSearchTitle=&title=Special%3AAbuseLog . The edit filter is in tagging only mode, so how could the upload have no other record of occurring? This feels like a bug, but I havent done AF work for a while now so maybe I am being dumb. John Vandenberg (chat) 11:57, 19 April 2016 (UTC)

@John Vandenberg: As far i know, files in the upload stash are triggering the filter as well. If i remember correctly this has been reported a while ago on bugzilla. --Steinsplitter (talk) 12:07, 19 April 2016 (UTC)

@Acagastya: I think it is technically impossible to edit the filter to know which are helpful edits and which are harmful edits. That filter was designed to prevent spam from IPs. You should login first before editing your user page (or other user pages). That's the only solution I see. Thanks, Poké95 00:16, 20 April 2016 (UTC)

@LX and Pokéfan95: maybe we can improve the message, as it appears many people assume they should report the problem rather than log in? John Vandenberg (chat) 05:30, 20 April 2016 (UTC)

The edit that you tried to make would have removed the source, authorship and licensing information as well as categories, which would not have been a constructive change. It would not have changed which photo is seen in any of the Wikipedia or Wikidata pages that transclude the file.
Additionally, the file that would have been transcluded in the stripped-down version of the file description page that you tried to save, File:Rosa Salazar.jpg, does not exist. The filter in question prevents low-resolution uploads from newly registered users using the cross-wiki upload forms, since those overwhelmingly turn out to be copyright violations. So uploading a full-resolution version of the photo instead of a 1024×768 low-resolution version would also avoid the problem. LX (talk, contribs) 22:40, 14 July 2016 (UTC)

I'd say the filter worked as intended. Looking at the log history, in your first edit, you tried to remove all authorship information from the file. All files must have authorship information. In your second edit, you tried to remove all categories categories from the file, including Category:Paintings of boys (even though this does appear to be a painting of a boy). All files should be categorised. In your third and fourth edits, you tried to remove the categories and all copyright information. All files must have copyright information. In your fifth edit, you tried to remove the information about the approximate date of creation, which is important for the copyright status of the work. If you think any of the information is incorrect, correct it, discuss it, or nominate the file for deletion if appropriate, but don't just randomly blank stuff out. Looking at the entries in the filter log such as Special:AbuseLog/1442053, it looks like the filter prevented you from committing copyright infringement, as you tried to upload the photo claiming that you created it (describing it as your own work and naming yourself as author and copyright holder). Permission to use a photo for a specific purpose obviously doesn't give you the right to claim that you created it, or the right to release it under a license that allows others to use it for any purpose. Please read Commons:Project scope/Summary to understand what you can and cannot upload here. LX (talk, contribs) 05:50, 31 August 2016 (UTC)

Please, there is no need to shout. Could you please elaborate as to why you think the Flickr photographer has misidentified his subject? Even if your unsubstantiated claim is true, removing the information template from the file description is hardly the way to address it, so I'd say the filter worked correctly. I'm afraid your report is rather incoherent. There are no entries in the log for your IP address. The log for File:Lt.Col.Thita Manitkul .jpg does show some entries where the filter prevented User:Pandamanitkul from blanking out all or parts of the file description before the file was deleted because it was a copyright violation.
Also note that you should not be creating or editing articles on any language edition of Wikipedia about your own family members or other subjects where you have an obvious conflict of interest. LX (talk, contribs) 10:34, 6 October 2016 (UTC)

I'm afraid your report makes no sense. There are no entries in the log for your IP address or for the file you claim to have tried to edit (which has never existed). There was a similarly named file, File:Lt.Col.Thita Manitkul .jpg, which has been deleted because it was a copyright violation. LX (talk, contribs) 10:20, 6 October 2016 (UTC)

Report by Ebrithil5

Ebrithil5: The filter you encountered prevents low-resolution uploads from newly registered users using the particular upload interface that you used. The reason for this is that those overwhelmingly turn out to be copyright violations.
Unfortunately, because of the number of copyright violations, the filter has had to be defined quite broadly, meaning it sometimes stops uploads that aren't copyright violations. And unfortunately, instead of getting rid of the flawed upload interface and directing users here to Commons (which the overwhelming majority of volunteers here would prefer), the Wikimedia Foundation thinks that leading users down this blind alley is a good idea.
You should be able to upload the file directly here at Commons. Before you do, you should read Commons:Guidance for paid editors, which contains information on sharing logos of organizations. LX (talk, contribs) 10:13, 6 October 2016 (UTC)

Having trouble coding my first filter

I'm an admin on a MediaWiki hosted at Miraheze. The autoconfirmed editors of that wiki want to block the addition of a particular URL to any page of the wiki (including Talk pages). In Boolean logic, the filter that I'm trying to write is: IF (action = 'edit') AND (text contains http://example.com) THEN Disallow (The actual filter will replace "example.com" with the site URL.) How do I code the "text contains http://example.com" part? --Robkelk (talk) 15:22, 15 October 2016 (UTC)

This doesn't seem to have anything to do with Wikimedia Commons. The talk page for the abuse filter extension for Mediawiki is over at mw:Extension talk:AbuseFilter. LX (talk, contribs) 10:47, 17 October 2016 (UTC)

  • Page name: Three-phase electric power (histlogsabuse log)
  • Edit kind: On the wikipedia page, I intended to add phase diagrams of voltage and current in wye and delta configurations, respectively. First a message came up saying it could not determine whether the file was suitable for Wikimedia Commons (though I was trying to upload to wikipedia -- not sure if there's a distinction). I was then given a message saying a filter had identified the edit as potentially unconstructive. The edit was disallowed. How may I go about uploading this figure?

Hi A. Erkiaga! The filter you encountered is designed to prevent low-resolution uploads from newly registered users using the cross-wiki upload forms, since those overwhelmingly turn out to be copyright violations. It sounds like this one should have been okay, though. If you use the Special:UploadWizard upload process instead, you should be able to upload the file.
