Uploading a new version of an image

Hi - I'm a long-time Commons user with 314 edits. I've been uploading new versions of images (generally cropping and changing levels) of other uploaders' files for years, but recently my new version uploads have been blocked with "File overwriting not allowed" because I "do not have sufficient permissions to do this."

Has something changed? Lestocq (talk) 14:48, 1 December 2023 (UTC)

@Lestocq: Hi. You have triggered Special:AbuseFilter/290 by trying to overwrite files that you did not originally upload. Please read MediaWiki:abusefilter-warning-file-overwriting and Commons:Village pump/Proposals/Archive/2023/08#Limit file overwriting to users with autopatrol rights again. Please request Autopatrol group membership at COM:RFR when you think you are ready (once you have made more than 500 useful non-botlike edits); having that should allow you to overwrite.   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 16:48, 1 December 2023 (UTC)
@Jeff G. Thanks for that. It seems odd that clicking the "Upload a new version of this file" button which is available on file pages is rated as Abuse. It hadn't happened to me before last month. And I'm confused by the term "overwriting" - I'm trying to add a new, revertable, version of a file, not overwrite it. Lestocq (talk) 17:10, 1 December 2023 (UTC)
Overwriting is essentially a new version of the file under the same name. Since too many people were ignoring the overwriting guidelines, it was changed so only people with the autopatrol right (and those who have rights that include autopatrol) can overwrite other people's files. You can make a request to overwrite a specific file at COM:OWR Abzeronow (talk) 17:16, 1 December 2023 (UTC)

Copyright status regarding U.S. Ambassador's Photos on Twitter

Hello, I am wondering whether these photographs by David L. Cohen, American Ambassador to Canada would qualify under a work of a United States Department of State employee, taken or made as part of that person's official duties. As a work of the U.S. federal government, the image is in the public domain per 17 U.S.C. § 101 and § 105 and the Department Copyright Information. Other photographs on the consulate's Flickr are already on Wikipedia, but them being on Twitter (and me not finding any photos from the consulate's Twitter yet) complicates matters. I would lean towards yes, since this is taken as part of that person's official duties, but I am unsure. Ornithoptera (talk) 04:17, 2 December 2023 (UTC)

These photos are almost certainly not by Cohen, though they are on his Twitter feed. The question seems to be whether we can presume them to be the work of an official U.S. government photographer. - Jmabel ! talk 05:26, 2 December 2023 (UTC)
Oops, I meant posted by. Semantics aside, I would assume that it would be "made as part of that person's official duties" right? This is a diplomatic visit between Cohen and Wab Kinew. Ornithoptera (talk) 05:56, 2 December 2023 (UTC)
Those photos do appear from the context to be part of Cohen's diplomatic visit so I'd also lean towards those being taken by diplomatic staff as part of their official duties. Abzeronow (talk) 16:48, 2 December 2023 (UTC)
Thank you for the response! I'll try and upload some of the photographs there then, they cover some figures that don't have photographs on Wiki yet so this might be fruitful! Ornithoptera (talk) 00:32, 3 December 2023 (UTC)

Copyright issue in very old familiy pictures

https://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Civitanova_del_Sannio#Monumenti_e_luoghi_d'interesse

Hello! I recently modified some text and uploaded some pics about old personalities from my little city. They are personalities died about 100 years ago, i found their old family pictures around the web.

I just received an alert from wikipedia about copiright issues.

PIcs are not mine but neither from the websites they published. They are just very old pictures without owner.

What can i do to solve?

Thanks, Mauro Mauro Lisanti (talk) 15:11, 2 December 2023 (UTC)

@Mauro Lisanti: Hi,
It depends how old are these pictures. Pictures older than 120 years are OK whatever the country of origin (so from before 1904 next month). For Italian pictures, they are in the public domain in Italy 20 years after creation (see PD-Italy), and public domain in USA if before 1976. You need to indicate the date. Yann (talk) 16:40, 2 December 2023 (UTC)
Which can be an approximate date, if you state it confidently. E.g. before which shows as "before 1930
date QS:P,+1930-00-00T00:00:00Z/7,P1326,+1930-00-00T00:00:00Z/9
", or between which shows as "between 1900 and 1940
date QS:P,+1950-00-00T00:00:00Z/7,P1319,+1900-00-00T00:00:00Z/9,P1326,+1940-00-00T00:00:00Z/9

Track usage of all my uploaded files

I know there is this answer in the FAQ about a single file, but how can I track usage of multiple files (all my files)? I'd imagine a table with the list of files and the number of resources which use them, or types of resources, etc. Is there an internal or external tool for that? Is there a notification service ("hey your image is now used in this or that Wikipedia article" for example).  podstawko  ●talk  18:26, 1 December 2023 (UTC)

Thank you for this reply. I had heard of Glamorous but assumed it had something to do with museums and such. So, I gave it a whirl and learned that I had 11,000 pix uploaded, slightly more than my estimate. 6,000 are in use which is a 'way bigger percentage than I expected. So, a smaller look found an even more glaring discrepancyː
Category "2009_Manhattan_photos_by_Jim.henderson" has 375 files.

Umm, ENWP alone uses more of these pix than actually exist? It cannot be. So, I saw that some of them are used in dozens of articles, which means the report is of how many articles have links to pictures in this category, and not how many of the pix are in use. Is there a way to find how many of them are in use? ̴̴ Jim.henderson (talk) 18:18, 3 December 2023 (UTC)

Heraldry. Tincture systematization for a country

I made an alysis of tincture colours of heraldic symbols for modern settlements in Georgia. I want to publish my gathered statistics and try to make a convention for wikipedians, so there will be no random colourization. For example, compare File:Flag of Chiatura Municipality.svg and File:Flag of Vani Municipality.svg – these must have identical colours for azure, vert and gold. Also I need to notice, that colour codes for different tinctures have their differences and special aspects in every country, so I don't think this is good idea to take colours directly from some, e.g. German land's flag. Plaga med (talk) 14:44, 2 December 2023 (UTC)

@Plaga med: In short, in a controversial area, you are trying to impose your view as policy, and consensus be damned. That's not how this works. - Jmabel ! talk 18:41, 2 December 2023 (UTC)
It's not that I want to impose only my view, I don't see any conflict with the principle of consensus. Somebody must start to talk, to have a consensus. Some things can be strinct rules if there are RS, if there is not, we can just have some list of recomendations. So if I'll try to unify colours of those flags and Coats of Arms, there will be a central place to discuss changes.
It is my main idea – to have a single place to discuss such topic and to write down my argumentation for my edits. Plaga med (talk) 08:44, 3 December 2023 (UTC)
@Plaga med: Ah, sorry, this read as if you were trying to impose your view, rather than start discussion there. Are you at all involved with en:Wikipedia:WikiProject Heraldry and vexillology or Commons:WikiProject Heraldry and vexillology? I'm not sure how active they are, but even if they are moribund, reactivating them would probably be the best way to do this.
Do keep in mind, though, that on the same principle we apply to maps, we are very unlikely to say to anyone "you can't upload your version." We might be able to mark it with Fact disputed or something more specific; we might allow a process whereby a WikiProject could actually endorse some coats of arms and deprecate others; but it will almost certainly be a matter of templates, etc., not of deleting things that the main group thinks are inaccurate. - Jmabel ! talk 19:49, 3 December 2023 (UTC)
Thanks, I'll leave my question there! Plaga med (talk) 22:45, 3 December 2023 (UTC)

Image Upload

I want to make a Wikipedia page for Vijay Dewan. His images are available on internet, specifically those are mentioned in News Articles and Online news platform. So how can I use that picture in the Wiki page? What will be the attributes or tags I have to mention?! Subhamsr24 (talk) 04:17, 3 December 2023 (UTC)

@Subhamsr24: Are the images available under a free license? —CalendulaAsteraceae (talkcontribs) 04:33, 3 December 2023 (UTC)
@Subhamsr24: Most images on the internet are not free. If you can't find the image license, then it's probably copyrighted. 20 upper 07:38, 3 December 2023 (UTC)
@20 upper, @Subhamsr24, What we are interested in is the onward licence. An item which is copyright may also be licenced for onward use. It is the lack of onward licence that dictates whether it is legitimate to upload the file here. If that licence is not present or is not obvious then there is no permission (licence) for onward use. 🇺🇦 Timtrent 🇺🇦 talk to me 🇺🇦 15:33, 4 December 2023 (UTC)

Question. Need advice

there are some letters I have obtained from some press members. which has very historical value and importance. I was thinking to put them on commons to publish. which was also about same personality I wrote an article about but I'm not sure if it's acceptable SaneFlint (talk) 10:21, 3 December 2023 (UTC)

Letter is from 1923. SaneFlint (talk) 10:26, 3 December 2023 (UTC)
@SaneFlint While the letter is 100 years old, I think, though I am no expert on copyright matters, that giving you correct correct advice will require the country in which the letters were written, and the (approximate) date of death of the writer, since the writer is, generally, the copyright owner. 🇺🇦 Timtrent 🇺🇦 talk to me 🇺🇦 10:42, 3 December 2023 (UTC)
Perfect ill do that. Thanks SaneFlint (talk) 15:46, 3 December 2023 (UTC)
100 years is not actually quite enough to be safe. In most countries, death date of author will matter. For example, 70 years after the author's death is a common (but by no means universal) threshold. Someone can easily have written something in 1923 and lived into the 1990s.
Most of this information is pretty easy to find online (including Commons' pages on various countries' copyright laws). - Jmabel ! talk 19:53, 3 December 2023 (UTC)
Hi it is known as Qasida which was recited on a historical conference which took place over 100 year ago. I have taken picture of that letter. Just curious how do i make it work. AS PICTURE WILL BE TAKEN BY ME SO I THINK there wont be any copy right issue. And i have details about a person who wrote this in 1923./1342H . HOPE IT HELPS SaneFlint (talk) 15:21, 4 December 2023 (UTC)
@SaneFlint That the picture is taken by you is not material if the item you have photographed is under copyright. The advice about the death date of the author of the letter is important, perhaps vital. 🇺🇦 Timtrent 🇺🇦 talk to me 🇺🇦 15:27, 4 December 2023 (UTC)
How we can know the material is under copy right already? Or there will be as i will be posting SaneFlint (talk) 15:34, 4 December 2023 (UTC)
@SaneFlint It may be allowed on enWiki to upload the letter under the doctrine of "Fair Use" which is not available on Commons. That is a separate conversation to be had, probably on w:en:WP:TEAHOUSE.
You will be able to research the copyright status from the answer given to you by Jmabel, above. Most of this information is pretty easy to find online (including Commons' pages on various countries' copyright laws). Commons:Copyright rules by territory is the key place to start. 🇺🇦 Timtrent 🇺🇦 talk to me 🇺🇦 15:38, 4 December 2023 (UTC)
I think I was able to upload it. Thank you. I'll follow up that link to learn more about copy right stuffs:) SaneFlint (talk) 15:46, 4 December 2023 (UTC)
Hi the person who wrote the Qasida died earlier in 1923.[ few weeks earlier] Than the Conference happened..
letter / Qasida was presented by Abdul Khaliq Kandyarwi, close aide of Maulana Muhammad from Sind. SaneFlint (talk) 16:38, 4 December 2023 (UTC)
That leads me to a technical question. I have determined from that information that the files are PD-Pakistan. Should an upload of photographs of the PD document also have a licence for the photograph itself, or is the PD sufficient. @Jmabel Is this something you are familiar with, please? If not please will you point me to the correct place to ask the question? 🇺🇦 Timtrent 🇺🇦 talk to me 🇺🇦 19:13, 4 December 2023 (UTC)
Certainly a faithful photograph of a PD photo creates no new copyright. Presumably the shadow of the photographer's hand is accidental, but I suppose in theory it could be copyrightable. I gather from the initial upload that they were claiming a copyright and offering a license, and it's probably cleaner if we acknowledge that, and indicate that the photo might have (licensed) rights independent of the document. The source should then be given as "original document photographed by [whatever credit might be desired]."
There are a lot of ways to do a split credit + split licensing like this. I know what I did at File:Asahel Curtis panoramic view of Galbraith, Bacon & Co Wall Street Dock and warehouse, Seattle, with sailing ships in background.jpeg is considered acceptable; I think there may be a template to do this more cleanly. - Jmabel ! talk 21:22, 4 December 2023 (UTC)
@Jmabel Thank you. I will set to work on that 🇺🇦 Timtrent 🇺🇦 talk to me 🇺🇦 23:28, 4 December 2023 (UTC)
@Jmabel following your advice I have done what I believe makes sense. If you (or anyone) feels I am incorrect, the files are in Category:Sayyid Ihsanullah Shah Rashdi. The intention to get it right is manifestly there. My implementation of that intention differs from yours, but is reflected jn the file history tab, and I think makes both elements clear, and agrees with the uploader's wishes as expressed during the upload process.
You make an interesting point about the shadow! 🇺🇦 Timtrent 🇺🇦 talk to me 🇺🇦 23:43, 4 December 2023 (UTC)

@DONALDRSPENCER: Hi, and welcome. I am sorry to inform you that you have triggered Special:AbuseFilter/153 by trying to cross-wiki upload a smaller (<50,000 bytes or <2,000,000 pixels) jpg image as a new user. The image you tried to upload is smaller, and you indicated it's your own work. Usually when someone uploads a smaller image, it is a copyright violation taken from the web. If you made the image yourself, please upload the full-size original of it per COM:HR, including EXIF metadata. If you did not make the image, please see Commons:Licensing for why we can't accept it, and have the image photographer / designer license it on their official website or social media, or send the image and permission via VRT with a carbon copy to you. If you can't get a compliant license, the image may still be uploaded to English Wikipedia in compliance with en:WP:F because we don't allow Fair Use here. Корпоративные аккаунты / Corporate Accounts

Допустимы ли на Commons не личные, а корпоративные аккаунты для загрузки фотографий, принадлежащих не индивидуальным фотографам, а компаниям?

Does Commons allow creating corporate accounts for the purpose of uploading the photos being in corporate possession?

Englishrussia (talk) 05:28, 4 December 2023 (UTC)
@Englishrussia: There's been some disagreement about how best to do this, but as far as I know the following approach is entirely acceptable:
  • Create a separate account for each individual who will be authorized by the corporation to do this. Make the account name of the form User:NORMAL USER NAME (COMPANY NAME). (If they already have another account here, NORMAL USER NAME should match their other account.) Any account should be operated by a single person; if more than one person is involved, each should have a separate account along these same lines.
  • User should declare on the user page that this account will be used in their capacity representing that particular company.
  • Either (1) the company should post on its own website or public social media indicating that this account (or these accounts) are authorized to act on behalf of the company, and then the user pages can link to a URL that displays that authorization or (2) some representative of the company (it can be the same person, if they are in a position of authority at the company) should send email (preferably from an email account on the company domain) to the address described at COM:VRT (or COM:VRT/ru) indicating that the account is authorized, and someone at VRT can mark that on the user page once it is established to their satisfaction.
I hope that helps. Let me know if you need that translated and I can probably snag a Russian-speaker to make it clear in Russian. - Jmabel ! talk 06:40, 4 December 2023 (UTC)

- Jmabel ! talk 00:42, 6 December 2023 (UTC)

can i upload a image of a person?

ccan i? BouncinBaby (talk) 03:54, 6 December 2023 (UTC)

If you have an "image of a person": Yes, technically you can upload it. But actually your question is so very unspecific, that no one will be able to give you the answer you expect. Is it a question about copyright or is it a question about personality rights or something else. If you would tell what person or if the image is online elsewhere and you name the link, then someone may be able to answer you question. If you don't own the copyright to the photo, and it is neither free-licensed nor in the public domain then no, you cannot upload it. - Jmabel ! talk 05:03, 6 December 2023 (UTC)

Reverting deletion nominations

Hello,

Over the past few months I have been nominating PNG files (uploaded by myself) for deletion, as they have been replaced by SVG files (also uploaded by myself). Examples of such files nominated for deletion can be found at Category:Diagrams of additional road signs of Ireland and Category:Diagrams of information road signs of Ireland. However, I've only recently become aware of the mass deletion request option. Many of my deletion nominations have not yet been acted upon, so I would like to ask if it is possible to withdraw the deletion requests I have made, and instead create a mass deletion request with all the applicable files included? Or would it be better to simply wait it out?

Thanks in advance. EthanL13 (talk) 21:08, 6 December 2023 (UTC)

@EthanL13: COM:DR implies that it's OK to close deletion requests (DRs) that you opened as long as no-one has commented on them yet. The instructions for doing so are on COM:DR. Then you can open a new mass DR for the same files.
An alternative approach is to create the mass DR and then turn all the existing DRs into redirects to it. That's something I've done before for groups of DRs submitted on the same day, but I'm not sure it's appropriate when they're spread out over months. --bjh21 (talk) 22:21, 6 December 2023 (UTC)
I think that redirect approach would be fine, given that Ethan is the uploader (so there is no issue about notifying the uploader). Just make sure that if there have been any comments on any of these DRs they get copy-pasted to the new mass DR. - Jmabel ! talk 03:25, 7 December 2023 (UTC)
Thanks @Bjh21 and @Jmabel. I have created the mass DR now, hoping I have done so correctly. EthanL13 (talk) 14:16, 7 December 2023 (UTC)

Weird wikidata infobox

Can anyone work out why an inappropriate Wikidata Infobox is showing up for Category:Biographical-drama films of Italy? - Jmabel ! talk 21:01, 4 December 2023 (UTC)

At wikidata:Q8300509, wikidata:Q116974375 was listed as the category's main topic; removing that property fixed the infobox. —CalendulaAsteraceae (talkcontribs) 03:41, 5 December 2023 (UTC)
@CalendulaAsteraceae: Thanks! That was impressively wrong. - Jmabel ! talk
It's still strange, though. The Commons category is about Italy. The Wikidata infobox is about philosophers. -- Asclepias (talk) 13:53, 5 December 2023 (UTC)
@Asclepias: Category:Biographical-drama films of Italy is modeled on Wikidata as a category intersection, so it picked up an image from the item for a parent category's main topic. Normally that works well, but not here, because the "main topic" was bogus. - Jmabel ! talk 18:31, 5 December 2023 (UTC)
I'm not sure if my comment was clear or if I just don't understand how Wikidata works. What I mean is shouldn't that Commons category "Biographical-drama films of Italy" be associated with something like Wikidata:Q75611862, which seems the same topic, instead of being associated with Wikidata:Q8300509, which seems a different topic? -- Asclepias (talk) 19:01, 5 December 2023 (UTC)
@Asclepias: I think it should. It looks like Pi bot added the connection to Category:Biographical-drama films of Italia to Category:Biographical films about philosophers (Q8300509) in d:Special:Diff/1836343275. It claimed to be copying from Commons category (P373), but Category:Biographical films about philosophers (Q8300509) didn't have a Commons category (P373) before that. That seems a bit weird: maybe Mike Peel has some idea what it did. Anyway, I've fixed the problem as you suggested and the (empty) category now links to the correct item. --bjh21 (talk) 19:14, 5 December 2023 (UTC)
There were a bunch of films with erroneous topic's main category (P910) links to Category:Biographical films about philosophers (Q8300509), it probably came through one of them (e.g., Socrates (Q3963888)), now cleaned up, e.g. [1]. Thanks. Mike Peel (talk) 09:50, 6 December 2023 (UTC)

Buonasera, Ho caricato dei file audio video su Wikimedia commons. Vorrei inserirli su un testo. dove trovo il nome del file da inserire su testo Wikipedia? Grazie Riccardo Prosperi Riccardo Ottanta (talk) 18:35, 6 December 2023 (UTC)

I need to move or copy images from Wikimedia Commons to a Wiki Page that I recently edited/expanded. The images were mine, and accepted in Wikimedia Commons.

I can find the image in Commons. I see the "use this file for wiki page". When I click on it, it just shows a pop up with file names (thumbnail or image). Nothing else happens. How do I get my own photos put into the wiki page? I tried to upload directly from my laptop to the wiki edit page and it says it's a duplicate already in existence. It won't let me advance further in the steps. Brooksy64 (talk) 20:15, 6 December 2023 (UTC)

The code in the popup is what you use to insert the image (usually the thumbnail one). Just insert it in the place where you want to have that image in your article. That's the point of Commons - the files uploaded here are available in all the different language Wikipedias. --rimshottalk 20:38, 6 December 2023 (UTC)

Hi, is this about translating the existing Wikipedia article? Wikipedia has a page for translators, which should be a good starting point. @Fenlander88: There is a general consensus on Commons that works published more than 120 years ago can be treated as being in the public domain even if we don't know when their authors died. So you can tag the files with PD-old-assumed-expired. Alternatively, you might use PD-UK-unknown if the author can't be determined. In either case, if you're uploading using the Upload Wizard you'll need to choose "Another reason not mentioned above" and enter the corresponding template (with the curly brackets). --bjh21 (talk) 11:23, 7 December 2023 (UTC)

@Straxman12: Hi,
Unless there is a mention of a free license, which I don't see there, you have to suppose that the pictures are not acceptable for Commons. You can search for pictures under a free license on Commons, Flickr, etc. Yann (talk) 16:00, 8 December 2023 (UTC)

btw im referring to like a link to the place where i can search Straxman12 (talk) 16:28, 8 December 2023 (UTC)
@Straxman12: Within a site, there is normally a search box. Beyond that, most people search with Google or Bing. Google, in particular, has some nice ways of restricting a search to a particular domain (e.g. "site:wikimedia.org" or "site:.gov", quotes not in actual search strings). If your question meant something other than that, you'll need to be clearer.
Speaking of clearer: probably 95% of what is on the Internet is neither public-domain nor free-licensed. One of the many reasons Commons is valuable is that we host about a hundred million files that are public-domain or free-licensed. Except for user-created content, these are mostly not easy to come by. - Jmabel ! talk 19:38, 8 December 2023 (UTC)

Mislabeled and Misrepresented Photo

File:Yakan.jpg#globalusage

Hello, the photo here is listed as a photo of a "Yakan couple," with the implication in that description and in the use by the various pages that this is a couple from the Yakan tribe of people in the Philippines. However these are not Yakan people, as these are two dancers from the Filipino-American dance group I am a part of called LIKHA Pilipino Folk Ensemble during a performance. Here is an image of the male person in the Yakan photo from 2023: second man from the left in black. Although the original Yakan photo in question was apparently taken in 2008, you can likely see they are the same person, but of course more confirmation can be provided if need be. They are both American, and are representing a Yakan couple in a performed dance in the photo. We don't necessarily need the photo to be removed from all these pages, as the representation of the Yakan culture to my understanding is fairly accurate, as it is based on research trips to the Yakan people. However we would like that the photo somehow be clarified as not of a Yakan tribesperson, but specifically a representation of Yakan people during a performance or by Filipino-Americans.

How can we go about 1) confirming that they (the two dancers indicated in this photo) are not of the Yakan tribe, and 2) editing the description on the wikimedia page and the uses on various wikipedia pages to more accurately reflect the nature of the photo, considering we are not the copyright holder and do not seem to know the original taker of the photo as indicated on the wikimedia page? SamuelMinioza (talk) 22:58, 8 December 2023 (UTC)

@SamuelMinioza: given that the user who uploaded that photo hasn't edited Commons in over a decade, I'm going to presume there is no chance of getting hold of them. I'd say it's pretty clear just on internal evidence that File:Yakan.jpg looks like a photo of professional or near-professional dancers in performance rather than a candid photo of people simply dancing, particularly so given File:Paragua.jpg uploaded the next day by the same user. So I'd suggest that you can feel free to edit the description accordingly, and to contact the various wikis on the talk pages of the respective articles (or, if you find something actively miscaptioned, edit it yourself.)
I see you are new here, so I'll permalink your remarks above from the talk page of the photo, which can be a bit tricky to do. Let me know if there is anything else in this process with which you'd need help. - Jmabel ! talk 07:45, 9 December 2023 (UTC)

@MBMMedia.USA: Something like this is certainly not within the scope of Wikimedia Commons (COM:SCOPE). Something like this might belong in the English-language Wikipedia, but it would (at a bare minimum) need to be formatted into paragraphs and have inline citations. At a glance, I can't tell whether the above shows enough independent sources writing about them (and not just in passing) to establish notability. Since this isn't even the relevant website, I'm not going to spend a lot of time trying to work that out. Also, since I suspect you may be related to the subject you are writing about, do read en:WP:COI and especially, if you are being compensated by the subject of the article or someone connected to them, en:WP:Paid-contribution disclosure. If you are, indeed, connected to the subject of the article and don't do that, you are very likely to find your account blocked on en-wiki, who are very strict about this (much more so than Commons). - Jmabel ! talk 08:10, 9 December 2023 (UTC)

Image tagging PP template

I got permission by the copyright holder to upload some files, which I did (e.g., [3]). Now, according to the help, the copyright holder is supposed to use the Commons:Wikimedia VRT release generator to release the images. But how do I tag the images in the meantime? The help on Commons:Volunteer Response Team is of no help because it only talks about emails, instructing to use the template, but that template only is for emails send to the orts team. Hello, I have a problem wanting to upload a pdf file, I am new and I need to do this since it is a homework that was asked of me, if it is possible that you would allow me to upload the pdf file I would appreciate it Eliangmz (talk) 03:04, 15 December 2023 (UTC)

@Eliangmz: It's very unusual to have homework that would require uploading a PDF to Commons, and we don't normally allow new users to upload PDFs, because when we did allow it, so high a percentage of them were either copyright violations or out of scope. Can you elaborate on what, exactly, is the nature of the PDF you want to upload? (Even in the worst case, you can point your teacher at this dialogue to see why you couldn't do that.) - Jmabel ! talk 03:45, 15 December 2023 (UTC)
The pdf that I want to upload is only a series of explained concepts, which was what the activity asked for. And I know that tasks of this type are unusual, it is a computer science class and the first time I see something like this, so I am also very lost, if it is not possible to enable the possibility for the pdf, how long should I wait, because only I have until Monday Eliangmz (talk) 04:12, 15 December 2023 (UTC)
@Eliangmz: That actually sounds entirely outside of Commons scope. See especially Commons:What Commons is not. Did your teacher specifically say to upload this to Wikimedia Commons? If so, please, let your teacher know he/she is asking you to break the rules of this site. (Not everyone who answers questions on this page is an administrator, but I am, and I'm telling you this as an administrator.) Again, feel very free to aim your teacher at this discussion for an explanation of why that will not be happening: you are trying to load exactly the sort of out-of-scope file that is the reason we made the rule against new users uploading such files. - Jmabel ! talk 04:50, 15 December 2023 (UTC)
Okay, thank you very much for answering and clearing up my doubts, I'll talk to my teacher about it. Eliangmz (talk) 05:30, 15 December 2023 (UTC)

Is a photograph free content - specific question

Hello, I have a photograph for a living person who is the subject of the Wiki article I would like to highlight the photo in. The photo is of this person holding their daytime Emmy award. This person gave me permission in an email to use the photo, and noted that it was taken by a friend at the award ceremony in 2006 and given to her, i.e. it is not a press photo but a friend's "snapshot." If the friend who took the picture can't be located to provide permission, can it be considered free content? Karamel patti (talk) 21:32, 10 December 2023 (UTC)

@Karamel patti: This is certainly not sufficiently free for Commons.
  1. The "friend" would own the copyright, not the person who is the subject of the photo. Also, if the Emmy statue is highly visible, that would itself produce an insurmountable copyright problem, because the statue is copyrighted, and the owners of that copyright will certainly not release rights.
  2. If the friend cannot be located, you are simply out of luck.
  3. If the friend can be located, then there are two issues that need to be resolved: (1) we need a specific free license, not just "OK, you can use this." (2) We'd pretty much need this to go through the process described at COM:VRT, where the friend (or their heir) would have to send the relevant email.
It sounds to me like you would do better to use a different photo for the article: either take one yourself, have the person take a selfie and go through COM:VRT to offer a specific license, or have them track down something where it is actually possible to get permission from the copyright-holder. - Jmabel ! talk 22:17, 10 December 2023 (UTC)
Additionally, I just found out that the friend who took the photo is deceased. Thanks for the info. and advice. 2601:204:4003:D440:6038:1B80:5262:765D 03:06, 11 December 2023 (UTC)

Not really. Wikipedia is a sister project to this one. And while everyone who has a Commons account also has a Wikipedia account, that doesn't mean that all of us edit both projects or that there is any way to get feedback from one project on a different one. Krassimira Stoyanova's article and photograph

Krassimira Stoyanova is a Bulgarian Soprano: there's a page about her in 7 languages in Wikipedia (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Krassimira_Stoyanova). She is the daughter of bulgarian composer Wesselin Stoyanow (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Veselin_Stoyanov) but this is not published, although clearly stated in his Wikipedia page in Bulgarian (https://bg.wikipedia.org/wiki/%D0%92%D0%B5%D1%81%D0%B5%D0%BB%D0%B8%D0%BD_%D0%A1%D1%82%D0%BE%D1%8F%D0%BD%D0%BE%D0%B2). Moreover, there's no photograph of her, although several appear in her own website (https://www.krassimira-stoyanova.com) and others (e. g. https://www.schmopera.com/scene/people/krassimira-stoyanova/). One of these could be published, for the source is under her total control and in public view. Can you help? Thanks! Vittorio Ameglio. Vittorio Ameglio (talk) 22:31, 11 December 2023 (UTC)

Edit war over copyrightability of simple text

There are these image files whose content is clearly not copyrightable, at least for a great many of them: text content that doesn’t remotely meet the threshold of originality (for the ones I touched mostly “abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz0123456789” and/or “The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog”), set in some arbitrary font, with the images even generated by a simple computer program from the digital font file and one or two minimal user inputs. Hundreds of them are tagged with some CC license and/or GFDL, which are based on copyright. So I'd say, these license tags are stating unjustified and misleading copyright claims and should clearly be removed. Since Commons is a wiki, I invested some time just fix this myself, and am now facing angry threats, ridicule and the start of an edit war. How to proceed from here?.. Requests for comment@meta?

Also, perhaps somebody can shed some more light on the claim, whether all SVG files can have copyright protection as computer software, simply by virtue of being in SVG format, like digital font files can.

Even if we’d have to consider UK law here, we are – at most, for part of the files – talking about whether picking one background colour exceeds TOO or not. Everything else (and likely even background colour) is determined by Gürkan Sengün’s Font Specimen Creator. TOO clearly isn’t zero in the UK.--Chewzy (talk) 03:11, 11 December 2023 (UTC)
But, dude - I don't feel like dealing with your behaviour in this matter any more.--Chewzy (talk) 13:57, 10 December 2023 (UTC)
@Chewzy: speaking as an admin here, you really can't bar a user in good standing from a discussion just because you "don't feel like dealing" with his "behavior," which appears to have consisted of reverting something that you did unilaterally with no consensus to back you. If there is somewhere his "behavior" that was actually problematic, I missed it, but you can bring it to COM:AN/U (with specific diffs to back up your claim of inappropriate behavior). - Jmabel ! talk 20:18, 10 December 2023 (UTC)
I don’t respond well to people who threaten to call the cops, first thing, instead of listening to arguments and trying to have a productive discussion. Going on to ridicule me doesn’t help. Consider that my personal thing. I never said anything about me, in turn, wanting to “report” him. – I didn’t like his behaviour, I don’t see a productive attitude towards me. I decide who I talk to. It's my request for help here. I didn’t find him helpful; that’s part of why I’m here.
My edits didn’t strike me as actually controversial. Could I kindly ask you to try to answer my actual question here instead of just voicing your (however qualified) solidarity for Jeff G.?
It still seems pretty clear to me that those copyright claims are wrong and should be removed. So, please: How to proceed? How/where to seek consensus on this surprisingly controversial issue? Who can settle the legal questions?--Chewzy (talk) 02:26, 11 December 2023 (UTC)
Usually, where there is even some possibility that a user's work might be copyrighted and they've offered an appropriate license, we don't delete that license in suggesting that another might be more appropriate. For example, at File:Joanna Sans Nova sample image.svg, you might add something in the permissions section like, "Although the authors of this file claim copyright and offer a , it is fairly likely that this image is not eligible for copyright in most countries and can be used on a public-domain basis."
If that's not an acceptable answer to you, you can take it up at the Village pump. Please, if you do so, include a permalink to this discussion so that it is clear what has already been said. - Jmabel ! talk 06:15, 11 December 2023 (UTC)
I very much appreciate the very constructive answer. Chewzy (talk) 14:35, 12 December 2023 (UTC)
I am the person who originally raised concerns about the user unilaterally changing the licences of font samples, even though the licences were already suitable for the Wikimedia Commons: under the circumstances, Chewzy's unilateral actions felt like a form of licence laundering. It appears that font samples and simple text like "The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog" are two entirely different things: style vs. functionality respectively, as it appears to me. --Minoa (talk) 00:04, 12 December 2023 (UTC)
I appreciate the raising of valid concerns and indeed had little awareness of Commons considering other than US legal frameworks. So far I didn’t feel like my point has been seen and addressed. To me those license tags (i.e. copyright claims) (still) seem something like reverse license laundering, if that makes sense. Neither in the text content (what you compared to “functionality”) nor in the layout, arrangement, coloring, embellishments, ... (what you compared to “style”) I can see any basis for copyright protection, even considering the given examples of UK legal cases. So I still think we should remove those copyright tags. Now, where would you have discussed something like this in order not to act “unilateral”? Chewzy (talk) 14:28, 12 December 2023 (UTC)
  • Some, like this one are a bit concerning. It's missing basic information. The file info seems to indicate that this is something created originally by the Flickr user. If it is, then good job, but it seems a bit older on its face. The complexity, plus the typesetting, plus the flourish...I would say puts this is testy waters as far as claiming TOO. Hi User:Jeff G., all information comes with the link https://globalvoices.org/2022/04/30/japan-officially-rebukes-ukraine-for-comparing-wartime-emperor-with-hitler-mussolini/. The s/w photo otiginal itself dates back to the Tripartite Pact (see description underneath). The photo therefore should be within the public domain. Meanwhile I mailed to H. Watanave (Cc VRT Permission Team) in order to verify the picture. Thanks for taking care, Peter Christian Riemann (talk) 16:50, 12 December 2023 (UTC)
The colorization is a problem, because it may be completely speculative (it says "Automatic Image Colorization") and the black and white original is always superior to the colorized version, and the colorization by Hidenori Watanave (which could be copyrighted) is not freely licensed. I strongly suggest that if the original black and white photo could be found, to use that. Abzeronow (talk) 16:34, 12 December 2023 (UTC)
Hello User:Abzeronow, please see my answer to User:Jeff G.... Peter Christian Riemann (talk) 16:52, 12 December 2023 (UTC)
I agree with the original photo would be PD-Japan-oldphoto as a 1940 created photograph. The colorization has faults in my opinion, the green in the big Italian flag appears to be too dark. Abzeronow (talk) 16:59, 12 December 2023 (UTC)
I would agree that the original black-and-white photograph would be fine, but we would need a license for the colorization. Also that the original black-and-white photograph would be clearly within scope, while the colorization is dubious in that respect. - Jmabel ! talk 19:30, 12 December 2023 (UTC)
Though I suppose that if the colorization was done by AI without significant human guidance it is PD-algorithm. Still doesn't address the question of why a colorization of this would be in scope, though. - Jmabel ! talk 19:32, 12 December 2023 (UTC)

Copyright Photo Taken Down

To whom it may concern,

Hello, For the page which I created, The Kryptonite Sparks, I uploaded a photo to which I have the permission to use from the copyrights holder, and it keeps getting taken down. Is there anything I am missing?

Thank you Kelly Picketrish (talk) 12:13, 13 December 2023 (UTC)

"2023-12-08T17:02:58 EugeneZelenko (B/A) deleted page File:The Kryptonite Sparks - PRESS LIVE 01 (credit @naluca).jpg (Copyright violation; see Commons:Licensing (F1): Promo/press photo)" Obviously the "copyrights holder" did not send a permission to VRT. You could ask Kelly Picketrish for the reason of that omission. C.Suthorn (@Life_is@no-pony.farm - p7.ee/p) (talk) 16:17, 13 December 2023 (UTC)
C.Suthorn: please remember that this is the help desk.
@Kelly Picketrish: the problem is that for images like File:The Kryptonite Sparks live at Electric Castle 2018.png and the others that were deleted, we have no automatic way to know that you represent who you say you represent. Anyone could create an account and claim to own the rights to anything. Here's what we need at this point: the copyright-holder of the work(s) in question needs to go through the process outlined at COM:VRT to grant a specific license. If you are the copyright-holder, that's pretty straightforward (although if you are not the photographer, the VRT would need to see copies of the document(s) that transferred copyright to you). If the copyright is held by an organization, then it's by far best that the correspondence come from an email on that organization's domain. If a third party holds copyright, the permission must come from that third party.
Note that you can word correspondence with the VRT to set up a more open-ended permission. E.g. if you represent an organization, they can handle confidential correspondence to establish that, so that you can be trusted in the future when uploading content on behalf of that organization. Similarly, if some photographer other than you wants to designate this account as having authority to upload their copyrighted materials, they can do so.
Also in the future: often the easiest way to handle this is to specify a free license the first time the image is uploaded to the Internet. For example, if the initial upload is to a band's web page, upload it there with a clear photo credit and an explicit indication of a license like CC-BY-SA 4.0. Then, anyone can upload it to Commons by citing that page as a source. (Similarly if the initial upload is to the photographer's own site, or to Flickr, or even to social media.)
By the way, as far as I can tell, for each image you uploaded, you got a warning about the permission problem at least a week before it was deleted, and you ignored the warnings. Predictably, they were deleted. - Jmabel ! talk 19:40, 13 December 2023 (UTC)

Criteria for deleting a file by a "blacklisted user"

I was looking for images to add to en:InterContinental_Shanghai_Wonderland and found several from this flickr account. I uploaded one image under CC-BY-2.0 but when trying to source it better got a message that the user was blacklisted? I can't find a specific deletion criteria that applies to this, what should I do? Thanks.

(Also, there are some other photos on this Daily Mail article - I assume all of these are no good as well because of the copyright?) Reconrabbit (talk) 16:52, 13 December 2023 (UTC)

You can find why a Flickr account is "blacklisted" at COM:QFI (EDIT: their entry says "Seems to upload concept art under CC-BY-2.0 without actually having permission") Abzeronow (talk) 16:54, 13 December 2023 (UTC)
The specific image in question is a photograph, though there are several drawings and renderings of the same location of questionable copyright. I don't have the expertise to say if this photo is okay to keep. I can't get a static link to the file either because the search tools give me this error. All 60k? That would be difficulut. How does the tool, which recognizes duplicates work? Can I use it? Juandev (talk) 17:19, 13 December 2023 (UTC)
@Juandev: Both Special:Upload and Special:UploadWizard should warn if a file you try to upload is an exact duplicate, and link to the file already uploaded.
Google Lens does a good job of finding if any given image is already online and if so where, so it can search Commons for images quite well. Unlike our own software, it will find even a scaled-down duplicate, or something with different EXIF data.
If your images are decently categorized, it shouldn't be too hard to find any given image. (A good motivation to categorize.) Assuming they are correctly attributed to yourself and you explicitly put the date in the wikitext (I'm presuming you know the date of your file, since most cameras and most file systems record that), that is also easily searched.
I hope that helps. - Jmabel ! talk 19:58, 13 December 2023 (UTC)

Meus uploads foram marcados para exclusão, como posso adicionar licenças a eles? Silvana de Souza (talk) 17:45, 13 December 2023 (UTC)

@Silvana de Souza: Sorry to be answering in English, I read Portuguese but do not write it.
You can always add a license to an image by editing the wikitext of the file page, and adding an appropriate template. For example, you can add "cc-by-sa-4.0" near the bottom of the page (typically above the categories) to license your own work as . - Jmabel ! talk 20:02, 13 December 2023 (UTC)
However, looking at the warnings on your talk page, it doesn't look like the problem has been a lack of license. It's been that you are uploading other people's work and simply asserting that you have their permission. Only the copyright-holder can provide permission. They will need to send email, as described at COM:VRT. Sadly, the Portuguese translation of that page is quite incomplete. Please at least look at COM:VRT, and if you can't understand what is needed, then let us know here and we can try to find someone to help you in Portuguese. - Jmabel ! talk 20:06, 13 December 2023 (UTC)

What is the rule on adding football badges to Wikimedia Commons and in turn Wikipedia?

According to Wikimedia, you aren't allowed to add logos that aren't yours to Wikipedia, but every team has a badge on Wikipedia. I have a PNG of the new Ulsan HD FC logo and I would like to add it to Wikipedia. Marshy djh (talk) 00:00, 14 December 2023 (UTC)

@Marshy djh: Please don't confuse Commons with the English-language Wikipedia. Unlike Commons, the English-language Wikipedia makes quite a few allowances for non-free use: see en:Wikipedia:Non-free content.
If the logos are simple enough (e.g. just text and very simple geometry) they may be too simple to be copyrighted. If they are very old (dating back to the dawn of association football) they may have fallen out of copyright. Other than that, or the unlikely case where a copyright-holder might free-license such a thing, they don't belong on Commons. The rest is an internal en-wiki matter. See en:File:Chelsea FC.svg for a good example; note that does not involve Commons at all. - Jmabel ! talk 00:10, 14 December 2023 (UTC)

@Vilahh: well, none of us can guess what you know something about! Is there anything where you'd say you have more knowledge than an average person? E.g. are you from somewhere that we might not already have very well covered, or study something or do something for a living that means you know something about something? Do you happen to be able to read and write a language that not so many people know, and could translate into that language either from English or from some other major world language? Happen to be more than routinely knowledgeable about cars, or some sport, or about the clothing of a particular region, etc.? If you can say what you know something about, then I can almost certainly give you a good place to start. - Jmabel ! talk 06:19, 6 December 2023 (UTC)

@Vilahh: you could help categorize currently uncategorized images. For example searching churches without categories finds File:Church of St. Flannan, Killaloe - altar.jpg which should most likely be in Category:St. Flannan's Cathedral, Killaloe. It could also be included in Category:Interiors of cathedrals in Ireland, Category:Altars in Ireland and Category:Crucifixes in the Republic of Ireland. You can find plenty of similar examples. Other religions have similar categories. MKFI (talk) 15:24, 7 December 2023 (UTC)

Hello. I uploaded that file, but i named it wrong. It should be "File:JuliaPart4bpc0000.png". How can i rename it? If i cannot do that, may someone do that? RuzDD (talk) 16:09, 14 December 2023 (UTC)

Addition: i uploaded two files including this with upload wizard, but it programmed wrong. I writed paint.net is just a helper software, but it considered it as an AI model, and i deleted it. Wizard must be corrected. RuzDD (talk) 16:13, 14 December 2023 (UTC)

@RuzDD: on your first question, there should be a "move" tab on every file page. Its location depends on the "skin" you are using, but typically it is one of the horizontal tabs above the file name. If you don't have filemover privileges yourself, then it should fill out a "rename" template, which someone else will attend to within a few days.

On you second question/remark, I'm not sure I understand "I writed paint.net is just a helper software, but it considered it as an AI model, and i deleted it." Could you elaborate? What exactly was the question you were answering in the Wizard? - Jmabel ! talk 21:48, 14 December 2023 (UTC)

Also: on fractal images, it really would be better if you could upload at a much higher resolution. - Jmabel ! talk 21:50, 14 December 2023 (UTC)

When saying "I writed paint.net is just a helper software, but it considered it as an AI model, and i deleted it." i mean: I made these using paint.net program, and the wizard asked me like that "are you used some software to make this?", and i select "yes" and wrote "paint.net" to "which program you used" like question. I thinked it will write like "this work made with paint.net program" but it wrote like "this work made with paint.net AI model and it is public domain, maybe you should ask for permission for paint.net, author is paint.net". This is a program, not an AI model. Because of this, i deleted this template. On second answer: I like to consider filesize. And, i upload this for a basic example and also beautifulness. If someone want to see the mandelbrot or julia or some other fractal, they can be find ready images on there, but more preferently: They can use softwares to lively generate ultra-detailed images. I can upload some higher res and full fractals, also. RuzDD (talk) 22:30, 14 December 2023 (UTC)
Interesting. That sounds like a problem with the Wizard. I bet it also applies to (for example) Hugin. I'll report that. - Jmabel ! talk 23:18, 14 December 2023 (UTC)
@Jmabel Ouch! I found another thing. This option writes "Bu çalışmayı bir YZ aracıyla oluşturdum" that can translated to English as "I created this work using an AI tool" and i cannot figure out that "YZ" stands for "Yapay zeka" ("artifactial intelligence" in english), and i think not only i falled this misunderstoodate. I think it must write the full word "artifactial intelligence" (or "yapay zeka" in turkish), also indicate that: this work will be public domain if it created with an artifactial intelligence tool. Jimi Solanke

The voice recording of the pronunciation of the name is totally wrong. You need someone who actually knows how to say the name to speak 2600:1700:9A99:F410:BC28:2F1B:D5AA:401F 20:52, 14 December 2023 (UTC)

I'm guessing this refers to File:Yo-Jimi Solanke.ogg (implicitly meaning that the uploader considers this to be a Yoruba pronnciation of the name). The uploader states on her user page that she is an Igbo from Adavi LGA in Kogi State, Nigeria and now lives in Delta State, and her Babel box says she is a near-native (though not native) Yoruba speaker. Offhand, I'd think that meant she has a pretty good chance of pronouncing his name correctly, but also some chance of getting it wrong. (It's been 3 months since her last Commons edit, so I don't know whether she will see this).
You are, of course, welcome to create an account and upload a file with what you believe to be the correct pronunciation. If you wanted to do that in Yoruba, you should probably call it File:Yo-Jimi Solanke (2).ogg. If you speak a different language, then a different appropriate language prefix would replace "yo". - Jmabel ! talk 22:05, 14 December 2023 (UTC)

How to edit the location of creation in the structured data of an image

No, this photo is not taken from Reading Abbey

I'm used to being able to edit the 'location of creation' in an image's structured data by using the edit button, but that button seems to have disappeared for a number of properties, including 'location of creation'. Not sure why this is, but it is quite important to be able to do it in order to modify or remove locations set by the GeographBot, which in my experience quite often either gets it completely wrong, or uses a location that is too general to ever be of any use. -- Chris j wood (talk) 12:37, 21 December 2023 (UTC)

As an example of what I'm talking about, the picture here of Reading station has a location of creation of Reading Abbey!. The ruins of Reading Abbey are actually about 500m in front of the camera, and a little bit to the left, beyond the big pink office block. And I seem to have no way of correcting this. -- Chris j wood (talk) 15:57, 21 December 2023 (UTC)

It may or may not be related to this problem. -- Asclepias (talk) 16:41, 21 December 2023 (UTC)
It may be, but the suggested workaround did nothing for me. I tried editing it both British English and German, but it still didn't give me an edit button for that property. -- Chris j wood (talk) 18:26, 21 December 2023 (UTC)
"Edit" link is missing for me, too. I'm wondering if the data got there indirectly. May I pressume Category:Reading Abbey and depicts "Reading Abbey" are also both wrong? If so, I'd suggest editing those appropriately and see if it changes. - Jmabel ! talk 19:34, 21 December 2023 (UTC)

Chris j wood, cf. Special:Diff/833137284 and Special:Diff/833137492 (plus additionally Special:Diff/833136886): I went on the structured data tab and then edited in the first box (seems to be captioned with “Items portrayed in this file”, note that my usual setting is not in English). — Speravir – 23:46, 21 December 2023 (UTC)
So that was not the issue, and it is still not possible to edit the incorrect 'location of creation'. - Jmabel ! talk 00:16, 22 December 2023 (UTC)

Can't add structured data statement

I can no longer add statements to the Structured data. My addition just disappears when I click on the drop down menu. Have tried "location of creation" "instance of" and "source of file". Anyone else seeing issue? Thanks. Nv8200p (talk) 01:10, 22 December 2023 (UTC)

There have definitely been some recent problems with "location of creation". Not sure about the others. Have you tried seeing if just "depicts" works correctly? - Jmabel ! talk 05:44, 22 December 2023 (UTC)
I can confirm that I can no longer add a 'location of creation' property to an image that doesn't already have one either. It is still possible to add or edit 'depicts' as normal. I think this must be related to the issue I raised above at Commons:Help_desk#How_to_edit_the_location_of_creation_in_the_structured_data_of_an_image. -- Chris j wood (talk) 11:28, 22 December 2023 (UTC)
"depicts" works as it used to, and I can edit some existing statements and add qualifiers. Many statements no longer have and an "Edit" option. Nv8200p (talk) 12:07, 22 December 2023 (UTC)
Well that is well weird. I went for lunch. Before lunch I couldn't add a 'location of creation' property, after lunch I could. I made no changes to me environment, didn't even restart the browser. Somebody fiddling?. -- Chris j wood (talk) 14:32, 22 December 2023 (UTC)

Unsuitable file extension

Hello. I wanted to overwrite Sierpinski_carpet_4.svg file with a 1-bit PNG because it only containts a few B&W squares that can be losslessly represented with raster, and it will be smaller (~250bytes instaed of ~2kb). But, system said "the MIME type does not match the file extension". In fact, file extensions does not need to fit the file type. For example, my music player can open MP3 files with WAV extension. But, commons seems to does not know that. I want to owervrite existing file rather than uploading a new file because the SVG version does not contains any benefits over the PNG. In PNG, the file size is much smaller, while the quality is the same. Please help me for uploading a PNG with a SVG extension, and i will be happy if these square-based fractals will be not uploaded in SVG anymore. RuzDD (talk) 00:02, 12 December 2023 (UTC)

@RuzDD: Hi, and welcome. No one pixel PNG file would fit the bill. Also, please wikify your posts so people can easily look at things like File:Sierpinski carpet 4.svg, which is 2 KB. We do have File:Menger 4.PNG, which is 3 KB, but any png image will look fuzzy when scaled down (due to design decisions discussed in phab:T192744) or jaggy when scaled up, so you may want to upload a jpg version, too. Also, please understand that our systems require files to have the correct types.   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 00:20, 12 December 2023 (UTC)
1: They would fit the bill if the resolution is correct. 2: PNG may look bad when scaled down, but SVG also will be look bad when scaled down. 3: I tried to scale up my PNG and it does not look like jaggy. Just it maybe look a bit better if it's not interpolated. 3: I am tried to wikify, but it showed the full image instead the link when i wrote . 4: It has two (probable) reasons to be 3kb: A: it's bit depth is higher than 1-bit. B: it's resolution is very high: 245x245px while 81x81px can be perfect. 5: I think JPG will be mess up the image because JPEG is not designed to contain basic BW square-based fractals, but 1-bit PNG is way more efficient (and lossless if the correct resolution is used). 6: I understood now, so i am going to update the existing PNG. But, can we make a redirect from the SVG file with deleting that file, like in Wikipedia articles (different names of articles showing the same content)? RuzDD (talk) 00:33, 12 December 2023 (UTC)
Note: Now i noticed i not have permissions to overwrite, so i uploaded Menger4-efficient.png. RuzDD (talk) 00:39, 12 December 2023 (UTC)
@RuzDD: Using the colon trick, I can wikify that to File:Menger4-efficient.png.   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 00:45, 12 December 2023 (UTC)
@Saperaud~commonswiki and @Meidosensei: What do you think?   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 00:44, 12 December 2023 (UTC)
  1. 1-bit != 1-pixel (resolution vs bit-depth (color number))
  2. you can create meaningful PNGs with 256 byte or less file size and even smaller webp and gif files with the same content
  3. It does not make sense to replace a file of only 2KB with a smaller file WRT MediaWiki
  4. SVG is better for these kind of content than any bitmap format (even if this is not the case for MediaWiki at this moment)
C.Suthorn (@Life_is@no-pony.farm - p7.ee/p) (talk) 08:43, 12 December 2023 (UTC)
1: If bit depth = 1bpc, 1bit~=1px in uncompressed formats. In compressed formats, 1bit > 1px. 2: I not prefer WEBP because i think it is not different from a mess. PNG or GIF is nice enough for these images. 3: I want to reduce sşze as i can due to my principles. If a smaller file provides the same quality with the bigger one, i must upload the smaller file anyway, even for a few bytes (this is in most status, sometimes exceptions being real, for example when decoding another file is faster and speed is important, but this is not from these exceptioner files). 4: SVG is the same for look, and worse than PNG at performance. SVG will want more process for rendering than PNG in ~99.9% of cases. Anyway, i will be happy if you can make a redirect from File:Sierpinski_carpet_4.svg and File:Menger 4.PNG, thanks. RuzDD (talk) 13:43, 12 December 2023 (UTC)
@RuzDD: I put the colons on the left and fixed the extension for you. Syntax is important here. If you want to delete those files to make way for redirects (or in the case of the PNG, to make way for your version), please see COM:DP.   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 14:11, 12 December 2023 (UTC)
I know syntax is important (i can write code on some langs), but i not know very well that wiki codes. I don't understand why mw uses the wiki lang, i think HTML and CSS are much better and easy. And, you fixed the extension: which extension? RuzDD (talk) 18:41, 12 December 2023 (UTC)
@RuzDD: With regard to the Menger 4 file, in this edit, you wrote "". I moved the colon to the left side and changed the "png" extension to "PNG" to form ":File:Menger 4.PNG" in my reply. See also en:H:PIC#Linking without displaying and en:H:WT.   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 23:57, 15 December 2023 (UTC)
Okay, i understand that it is the file extension. RuzDD (talk) 01:07, 16 December 2023 (UTC)

Useless efficiency

@RuzDD: if you write code, then I would imagine you are familiar with the notion that you can only meaningfully gain efficiency where there is significant inefficiency. For example, it is rarely worth optimizing a portion of the code where a program spends 2-3% of its time. Similarly here: a 2KB file is, in the scheme of things nowadays, nothing. It is literally smaller than the text of this discussion. Even if you could somehow take it down to nothing, unless someone is (for some odd reason) downloading it thousands of times, you don't gain enough to be worth any trouble.

Now, if you can drop a 32MB file to 600KB without data loss visible to the human eye, that can be very worth doing.

There's nothing inherently wrong with something being made unnecessarily efficient, but if significant human time is wasted on making it so, then it is generally a wasteful thing to pursue. - Jmabel ! talk 19:25, 12 December 2023 (UTC)

I think that's not useless because not only high-performance computers and fast Internet connections using Wikimedia projects. Owners of very much lower capabilited computers may want to use WM projects. For example, ATmega328P has only 32KB of program ROM, 2KB of SRAM and 1KB of EEPROM. (ATmega328P is used on Arduino Uno and Nano, and Uno is the most used model of Arduino.) At this level of memory, a few bytes can change things. This also happens on performance. For example, on an Arduino, processing that SVG will be take much more time than PNG because Arduino have to think colors and shapes too much on SVG, but not on PNG because 1: Shapes used on PNGs are cannot change (they are always square, i mean pixels) 2: From the beginning of the file, ATmega knows that: this image contains only 2 colors! (I don't calculated the efficiency ratio, i hope this does not create problems. Also excuse me if i wrote things wrong because my main lang is Turkish and i don't know English very well.) RuzDD (talk) 23:17, 12 December 2023 (UTC)
@RuzDD: You understand that uses of SVG files on WMF project are via PNG thumbnails, right?   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 00:28, 13 December 2023 (UTC)
Yes, but this does not remove the problem. All PNG files are not equalivant. There are major differences between File:Menger 4.PNG and File:Menger4-efficient.png. One is 245x245px while the other is 81x81px. And, one is 1bpc while the other is at a higher bpc (i not checked but it should be higher, otherwise the file size must be lower). Also, wrong conversions can make a blurry (or unbalanced if we do not interpolate it) image. A human can solve these problems, but the MW engine does not know that. Because of this, the output of that engine is probably going to be much bigger (file size) and maybe blurry or wrong. RuzDD (talk) 13:44, 13 December 2023 (UTC)

Internal error: Server failed to store temporary file. (for pdf)

Hi all

I'm working with the UN Food and Agriculture Organization to help them upload their publications and graphics to Commons (lots of great graphics etc). I've uploaded quite a lot of content before and I have a new error I've never seen before, please can someone help? It would be useful to know if there is an issue with the file or with the upload wizard.

When I try to upload this publication to Commons for them to then send the VRT request I get this error

Internal error: Server failed to store temporary file

Please can someone tell me what it might be? Please feel free to try to upload the file yourself and just add as the license so they can then send the permission. If it is an issue with the pdf (which opens fine on my computer and isn't too big) could someone tell me the fix?

I found a few Phab tickets with this error message but don't really understand them, also I uploaded a similar size pdf just before so I don't think its a connection issue.

Small update: I've just tried uploading a slightly compressed version using the Adobe compressor and a 'repaired' file using an online pdf repair tool, but neither fixed the issue.

Thanks very much

I have had this happen before and Commons:Chunked uploads has worked for me many of these times. —Justin (koavf)TCM 06:53, 13 December 2023 (UTC)
Hi Koavf thanks very much, the file is 27mb, so I don't think its the file size, it only takes maybe 30 seconds to upload on my pretty ok wifi connection. I'm unclear how to use chunkeduploads, from what I read on that page it appears to be automatically applied? There aren't any installation instructions. Would you mind trying to upload the file? Just so I know if its an issue I'm causing or if its either the file or Commons? It failed for me on the upload page John Cummings (talk) 07:14, 13 December 2023 (UTC)
Unfortunately, this file cannot be uploaded here due to its license. If you'd like, I can upload it to https://nccommons.org/, a similar project that has no formal relationship with this site. —Justin (koavf)TCM 07:18, 13 December 2023 (UTC)
Hi Koavf the licensing will be sorted out with a VRT ticket after its uploaded(I have the email for FAO to send ready to go), the VRT system allows you to upload the content before applying the VRT ticket (I think it gives you 7 days to upload the permission before the file is deleted). Please can you just try uploading it and let me know if it gets as far uploading the file successfully? Also can you think of anywhere else I can ask for technical help with this? I feel like I have a pretty rare issue. Thanks, John Cummings (talk) 07:58, 13 December 2023 (UTC)
@Koavf: I know John, and although he doesn't mention it here, he was the longstanding Wikimedian in residence at UNESCO, and I'm sure that if he says FAO will grant a permission via VRT he knows what he's talking about. So this is presumably a strictly technical problem in doing the actual upload. - 08:08, 13 December 2023 (UTC)
Jmabel thanks so much :) Yeah I'm assuming its a technical issue, although I have no idea what... Can you suggest anywhere I could ask for help? If you could try uploading the file and see if you get the same error I'd really appreciate it :) John Cummings (talk) 08:16, 13 December 2023 (UTC)
John Cummings file is now at File:World Food and Agriculture - Statistical Yearbook 2023.pdf with a blank template. You will need to fill out all fields and address the licensing issue. I suggest you address this ASAP, because as it stands now it would be subject to speedy deletion. - Jmabel ! talk 08:32, 13 December 2023 (UTC)
@John Cummings As a workaround you can use Rillke's BigChunkedUpload. While you can upload files up to 100 MB without chunked upload, it is a workaround in cases, where normal upload does not work. see Help:Chunked upload The script allows you to set the chunk size. If upload does not work with the default setting try smaller or larger chunk sizes. C.Suthorn (@Life_is@no-pony.farm - p7.ee/p) (talk) 08:39, 13 December 2023 (UTC)

Jmabel thanks so much :) Can you briefly explain how you managed to upload this incase someone also has this issue (or I get it again). Thanks again, John Cummings (talk) 08:51, 13 December 2023 (UTC)

@John Cummings with Special:Upload, it went without a hitch. I find it much more reliable than the Wizard (which I generally avoid: I know exactly what I want on the file page). - Jmabel ! talk 19:23, 13 December 2023 (UTC)

MacekR

Hi all!

I am preparing a draft for an article, but only seem to have one option for saving it, which in the German version is "Änderungen veröffentlichen" (publish changes). For lack of an alternative I use this in the hope the draft is saved, but now can´t find it again. I followed the starter video, and have checked the handbook. I obviously turned somewhere and can´t find my way out. Please help.

Deletion requests.

Hello everyone, I hope you are well. On October 3, I requested to delete a group of images (Commons:Deletion requests/Files uploaded by User:OptimusPrimeBot). We had an interaction with user Don-vip, where he concluded that the images could be deleted, but this deletion is taking time, I would like to know the estimated time for the deletion of images and if there is a way to speed up the process. Thank you so much! Yiseth Romero (talk) 19:49, 15 December 2023 (UTC)

@Yiseth Romero: and so we meet again. The deletion request (DR) hasn't actually been closed. Returning a Wikipedia page to its earlier state

I tried adding a photograph of James Joyce to the Trieste page. The photograph was from the James Joyce page. It didn't work out. I think I checked Publish instead of Preview. This happened today, December 15, 2023. I'd like to return page to last prior version. I apologize for my multiple errors. Thanks for whatever help or advice you can give me.

Trying to upload a photo and it's not being accepted

Hi - I originally created the page for Charles Daniels (tenor) some years ago. I can't recall the original account I used, so I've made a new one just now. Some time ago, someone took down the photo of Charles that I had initially added to the article; there was no reason given, but I think I understand why, as it depicted him with a beard and he doesn't usually wear one. (I am in complete agreement with his wife that it doesn't suit him.) So I have just been trying to upload another photo of him, sans beard, which I took in 2010, and for some reason it's not being accepted. There are no copyright issues here at all; it's absolutely my photo. I'm wondering if there is some objection to the word "publicity" in the filename; that's there because at the moment I'm arranging a concert in which he's singing, and I am putting that particular shot on the publicity for that concert. Can anyone help, please? Baroque mongoose (talk) 20:48, 15 December 2023 (UTC)

  • @Baroque mongoose: A beard would be an unlikely reason to delete a photo. But if you are not interested in having that image restored, it is moot.
  • You don't say what upload tool you are using, or what error message you got, so it is tricky to know what went wrong. Have you tried Special:UploadWizard? If not, see if that works; it often does where cross-wiki uploads do not. Just to be clear though: unless you took the photo yourself, the copyright-holder of the photo (typically the photographer) needs to grant a license to use it. That probably means going through the process at COM:VRT, and only the copyright-holder can do that, not a third party.
  • Also, for the article on en-wiki: I hope you have read en:WP:COI and especially en:WP:Paid-contribution disclosure. It's not an issue on Commons, but on en-wiki you can be permanently banned for writing an article where you have an undisclosed business interest, so make sure you do the appropriate disclosure. If you haven't dealt with that, I strongly suggest you do that before making any further edits on en-wiki. - Jmabel ! talk 21:13, 15 December 2023 (UTC)
Thanks - just to make it clear, I don't have an actual business interest; I don't work as a concert promoter for a living. This is a one-off concert. I used to travel to a lot of concerts, but since 2016 I have been fairly seriously mobility-impaired, so I no longer can; and I live in a New Town where there are no concerts, so I decided to arrange one, as a private citizen, at my own risk. I still have no idea whether I'll so much as break even. Other than that I've never worked professionally with Charles; he's simply a friend of some twenty years' standing. If I need to declare that, I'm happy to do so. Baroque mongoose (talk) 10:47, 16 December 2023 (UTC)
@Baroque mongoose: The article on en.wikipedia was created by User:Tenor mongoose, as seen in the history of the article. A "File:Charles Daniels Stour 2007.jpg" was uploaded to en.wikipedia by User:Voceditenore in 2007 [4] and was deleted in 2022 for absence of evidence of permission from the photographer Sarah Hild McEvoy. Your recent attempts at uploads with the filenames "File:Small portrait Charles Daniels.jpg" and "File:Small portrait publicity.jpg" are recorded in your "abuse filter log", which tells that they were attempts at cross-wiki uploads, from a website other than Commons. You can probably upload from the Commons website. -- Asclepias (talk) 21:30, 15 December 2023 (UTC)
That was me. However, I am no longer Sarah Hild McEvoy; I am Makepeace McEvoy. I changed my name several years ago. And Wikipedia absolutely has my permission to use either that photo or the new one; I thought I had made that quite clear at the time! Baroque mongoose (talk) 10:49, 16 December 2023 (UTC)
@Baroque mongoose: Hi, and welcome. I am sorry to inform you that you have triggered Special:AbuseFilter/153 by trying to cross-wiki upload smaller (<50,000 bytes or <2,000,000 pixels) jpg photos as a new user. The following applies to each photo. You indicated it's your own work. Usually when someone uploads a smaller jpg photo, it's a copyright violation taken from the web. Please upload the full-size original of it per COM:HR, including any metadata, but if you were not the original photographer, that person may need to license it on their official website or social media or send permission via VRT with a carbon copy to you. If you can't get a compliant license, the photo may still be uploaded to English Wikipedia in compliance with en:WP:F because we don't allow Fair Use here. If you use our Upload Wizard instead, you should be able to that filter.   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 23:26, 15 December 2023 (UTC)
Ah. OK. Thank you. There is, unfortunately, a problem with uploading the full-size original of that photo, because there was another person in it whose presence would cause confusion; what happened was that I attended that particular concert with a friend, and they wanted their picture taken with Charles, so I obliged. The photo I tried to upload was the result of cropping Charles out of that photo.
I do have several other photographs of Charles, but quite a lot of them are with other people, and also quite a lot of them are not that good. Getting a decent photo of Charles is not easy because he is somewhat nervous around cameras; he thinks he's ugly. So the trick is generally to amuse him, and then hopefully what you get is a nice smile (the photo that was taken down is actually the best I've ever managed of him, beard notwithstanding), but you might end up with him in fits of laughter... and while that sort of photo is very nice for a friend to have, I don't think it's at all suitable for a serious article on Wikipedia.
I'll see what else I can find that isn't cropped, but in the meantime, if someone wants to restore the original photo with the beard, I'm happy for that to happen. Baroque mongoose (talk) 10:58, 16 December 2023 (UTC)
@Baroque mongoose: You're welcome. If the original is digital, it should have Exif metadata. When cropping for upload here with such a subject, please try to use a tool that preserves that metadata. See also COM:Exif and COM:UDR.   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 15:26, 16 December 2023 (UTC)
@Baroque mongoose: if you don't mind the picture being briefly visible, you can upload the full version, then overwrite it with the crop, and ask at Commons:Administrators' noticeboard for someone to suppress the full version, which will usually happen within hours. That way, we have it on file, and admins can consult it if needed, but except for the few hours of exposure -- and then only if you look at the file history -- it is not public. - Jmabel ! talk 18:04, 16 December 2023 (UTC)

Old version of "Defense Supply Center Richmond.jpg"

Hello. I was wondering if there were any way to delete the original upload of Defense Supply Center Richmond.jpg while leaving the newer version intact. I ask because

  1. I forgot to censor a license plate in that upload, which I fixed with the newer version, but I'm concerned about anonymity, especially due to the subject matter of the photo. (I know the plate is blurry, but I'd rather be safe than sorry.)
  2. Commons doesn't seem to be displaying the newer version (nor does Wikidata, although Wikipedia seems to have updated just fine). This is a lower-tier concern, but I wanted to make note of it nonetheless.

Thank you,
Packer1028 (talk) 06:30, 16 December 2023 (UTC)

Convenience link: File:Defense Supply Center Richmond.jpg
#2 is certainly just caching.
#1 done, as a courtesy to you as uploader. FWIW, we don't normally blur license plates in the U.S.: there is no expectation of privacy for an automobile in a public space in the U.S. - Jmabel ! talk 07:25, 16 December 2023 (UTC)
Thank you so much!
Is it prohibited to censor photos, discouraged, or just not required? If there's a policy against censoring them, I will of course follow it, but it's no big inconvenience for me and I prefer to censor plates as long as that doesn't go against policy or ruin a photograph. Packer1028 (talk) 19:49, 16 December 2023 (UTC)
It's just not required. Abzeronow (talk) 19:56, 16 December 2023 (UTC)

delete uploaded photo

Since my article is going to be deleted, I want the photo I uploaded to be deleted too. Stefaniehillenaar (talk) 10:15, 21 December 2023 (UTC)

@Stefaniehillenaar For a limited time you can ask for a courtesy deletion (for exmaple if you uploaded an image you never actually wanted to upload). But apart from that exception, this is not how it works. You uploaded the portrait with a cc-by-sa-4.0 license. That is a license that cannot be revoked. If it turns out, that the image is a copyright violation (if you had not the right to publish it), it will be deleted. If it is out of scope or aganist personality rights, it can be deleted. In such a case everyone (including you) can start a deletion request. To the left of the image, you will find a link to start a deletion request. You will then be asked for the reason. "My article has been deleted or will be deleted" is not a valid reason for deletion. Someone else may write an article about the person, or the portrait image may be useful at other places in Wikipedia or anywhere else. Fair use photo for a player like Julie Halard-Decugis

We have a tennis article at Wikipedia on Julie Halard-Decugis. There are no photos on her page because we can find no public domain images of her. She won the US Open tennis title in doubles in 2000 plus several other titles in her career in the 1990s but she is long since retired. When I look at a website like [5] I see photos of Julie Halard-Decugis and I know they are copyrighted, even though they don't say so. Must we have an article on wikipedia with no photo at all, or is there some way we can use one of these photos as fair use, say in either the infobox or perhaps in prose where we have a sentence describing her win? I'm not sure exactly how fair use works in this case as I usually have just uploaded my own personal photos here. We have many older tennis players with this situation and I need to be advised on how the fair-use works for Wikiproject Tennis. Thanks. Fyunck(click) (talk) 00:22, 14 December 2023 (UTC)

Saludos. Strakhov (talk) 14:18, 17 December 2023 (UTC)

Forged letters bearing a fake signature of Pope John Paul II

I have several images of documents that were published in the 1980s as genuine and exposed as forgeries; both the forgeries and the official Vatican response denouncing them as such were published by me in 1990 GuyStairSainty (talk) 14:59, 18 December 2023 (UTC)

  • @GuyStairSainty: do I understand correctly that these are things you are proposing to upload, rather than things that are already on Commons? Just for confirmation, not just our reasonable analysis of the ambiguous "11-12-1925" date, the cited source is a scan of a newspaper with dateline "12 December 1925". Whether that means we should list it as the 12th (publication) or 11th (reasonably presumed when it was taken?) I'll leave to others to hash out. DMacks (talk) 06:18, 19 December 2023 (UTC)

Writing on the photos taken from Wikipedia commons.

Before, we could download the free images and photos taken from Wikipedia commons and write a title over them with the ¨paint¨ system coming with windows 10. It was extremely useful. Now, this advantage has disappeared, which make all those free images totally useless at least for me. What system can we use to write explanations on those photos? Is it prohibited? @Monsieur Lamaire: I'm quite confused. Are you talking about (a) something that has changed within Wikimedia Commons, or (b) something that is different about whatever (unspecified) operating system you are now using than it was in Windows 10, or (c) about something that has changed in later releases of Windows 10? Derivative figures included in an open access academic article

Hi, I recently came across a scholarly article that includes many valuable images related to the embryologist Wilhelm His, Sr. I wish to upload them, but as a first-time user of Wikimedia Commons, I am unsure as to whether permission is required. Most of the figures are photographs of historical images/objects, and the article itself is released under the CC BY 4.0 license (cf. article page and [6]). So I suspect they count as Commons:Derivative works with appropriate licenses and are hence acceptable here.

I have two questions:

1. Would it be acceptable to crop these figures, as most of them are montages of multiple images? In fact, since the montages are created out of various different sources, I think it would be easier to document information if each individual image was cropped and uploaded.

2. The authors go out of their way to specify "image rights" for certain images (e. g., Figure 1D). Is permission necessary for such images, even if the article itself is open access? If so, would it suffice to contact the authors of the article, or would I have to obtain permission from the owners of the "image rights"?

Thank you in advance. Ymed16 (talk) 20:28, 19 December 2023 (UTC)

@Ymed16: this is a tough one to answer entirely, because potentially each image could have its own issues. At a quick glance, most of this looks old enough to probably (but in some cases not certainly) have passed into the public domain but, for example, portions of Figure 16 do not. So you are going to have to go through this and work it out on a case-by-case basis.
You mention image 1D; I can see no way this would still be copyrighted.
It's fine to take individual images out of the larger figures.

I see, I will make sure to look into the descriptions of each image. Thank you very much! Ymed16 (talk) 21:03, 20 December 2023 (UTC)

Computer generated images used in the contests

Hello, i am an active member of Wikimedia commons. As amateur photographer, i like to join contests. I use my own photographs taken with my Canon camera. I would like to make sure that only our own images taken as "humans" and not generated by AI are participating in the contests. is there any one of the admin or moderators guys who vet the pictures in the contests? Are we all ensured that no AI Pictures are becoming part of the list of pics that compete in the contest? what happens if some of us check the pics and see that there are some AI pictures in the contest? can we report them or those pics are fully allowed in the competition? (i believe not, but i ask just in case). Thanks for the info that i believe are quite useful to know. Oncewerecolours (talk) 09:51, 20 December 2023 (UTC)

Do the contest explicitly forbid AI? Trade (talk) 10:17, 20 December 2023 (UTC)
i didnt find anything that explicitly forbids the usage of AI but i found an implicit statement as you see in "Photo Challenge" page info:
"The Photo Challenge inspires photographers to take great pictures and upload them to Commons. Monthly thematic competitions encourage participants to try new subjects, new photographic or processing techniques, and to develop skills while improving the Commons repository of free images. Photographs entered into a competition must be new to Commons and taken by a Commons user."
Added to this is my consideration (that i assume is the consideration made by many of us, as members of Wikimedia : we are talking about contest of pictures, photographs. This is obviously related to an art, photography, made by users. Not by robots, computers, or softwares. They are not allowed to compete, am i wrong?
Due to this, i would like to suggest to the wikimedia admins to add an explicit rule which forbids the usage of AI generated images in the contest. As participant, i would like to be ensured that only real pictures "taken" by users are part of the contest.
Thank you to the admins who read this and take in consideration my idea. :) Oncewerecolours (talk) 13:32, 20 December 2023 (UTC)
@Oncewerecolours: Hi, and welcome. Thank you for participating in the contests and writing here. Your suggestion would be better received as a proposal that could be voted on at COM:VPP.   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 14:38, 20 December 2023 (UTC)
Admins have no special role in making rules, only in enforcing them.
The rules of any given contest are up to the people organizing the contest.
If it's a photography contest, then presumably only photographs are eligible, but I don't think we have any rule against a more general contest. - Jmabel ! talk 20:44, 20 December 2023 (UTC)

How to use the totally free images of wikipedia commons?

In the past, it was easy to use wikipedia commons. Now, they made it extremely unpleasant and infuriating. It's clearly on purpose since the photos are supposedly free. To improve the difficulty to use the system, I would suggest that they put a 65 pages long tutorial document to be read every time we want to download a photo on our computer. They could also force us to invent five different passwords (to be changed every week) and force us to use three different codes sent on three different telephone numbers. All that should be asked in Chinese or Turkish to make it even more unpleasant. I will try to find more difficult way to use that damned system. Thank you in advance. What are the copyright laws in the EU of inherited artworks.

I am working on the Wikipedia page of my great-grandfather, who was a famous painter in Hungary. We'd like to upload some of his work to the site, but I'm not sure about the copyright laws. He died 52 years ago. He had a son (my grandfather) who inherited all his paintings and drawings. He has approved for me to upload some paintings, but we don't know if that's enough. Szerkesztő.2244 (talk) 10:45, 22 December 2023 (UTC)

@Szerkesztő.2244: The normal copyright terms is 70 years after death per [:Commons:Copyright rules by territory/Hungary]] but, until that time is over, the heir could release the paintings under a free licence we accept. If the image includes a frame or something 3-dimensional outside the painting area itself, the photographer's permission is additionally required. It sounds like your grandfather is still the copyright holder, so we would need to obtain his permission. He can do that by completing the consent as detailed on this page Commons:Email templates/Consent. Then you can use one of these copyright templates specifically for heirs Category:License tags for transferred copyright, preferably one of the first 5 listed. Ww2censor (talk) 11:02, 22 December 2023 (UTC)
Thank you! Szerkesztő.2244 (talk) 11:14, 22 December 2023 (UTC)
@Ww2censor: more precisely, the father is now the copyright-holder, having inherited the intellectual property rights from the grandfather. But, yes. Also: @Szerkesztő.2244: you might want to ask your father to word the permission broadly, authorizing you on this account to upload any of your grandfather's works on his behalf, and granting the license in advance for any of those that you upload. - Jmabel ! talk 19:38, 22 December 2023 (UTC)
@Jmabel: it was not clear to me if it was the father or grandfather who dies 52 years ago. However, the permission should obviously come from the current living inheritor. Ww2censor (talk) 19:55, 22 December 2023 (UTC)
@Ww2censor: Ooh, I'm sorry, I appparently misread, you were probably entirely right. Anyway, the advice remains fundamentally the same: the email needs to come from the person who holds the rights. @Szerkesztő.2244: will this be workable for you? There are other ways around this if it is not, but they are more cumbersome. - Jmabel ! talk 20:01, 22 December 2023 (UTC)

Please help me find the licenses for the logo of FC sporting Madeira https://sportingdamadeira.pt/ BELORECKIYSHARIK (talk) 14:31, 22 December 2023 (UTC)

@BELORECKIYSHARIK: Presumably there is no free license available: there wouldn't normally be for something like this. The question is whether it is copyrightable. If you can find an example of pretty much exactly that "lion rampant" from the 19th Century (the easiest way to establish that the lion is public domain), I'd say there is nothing else copyrightable in that logo, so with that citation of prior art it would be uploadable to Commons with some combination of PD licenses (probably PD-old-assumed-expired for the lion and PD-textlogo for the rest, plus Trademarked. That's a little tricky, so if you upload it on that basis please link it here on Help desk (in this section, if this section hasn't been archived) so that someone can check your work and fix it if you didn't get it quite right.
Again, the key to that is finding a 19th-century or earlier image that is clearly the same "lion rampant". - Jmabel ! talk 19:46, 22 December 2023 (UTC)

Excluding a user's uploads from search?

If I want to not see a certain user's uploads when searching for files, is there a way to do that? Appending to my search the expected "-User:Example" doesn't work. –Vuccala (talk) 14:02, 21 December 2023 (UTC)

I assume that you have already explored the search help of MediaWiki and found nothing. I do not know an answer. But here is an idea. If you want to exclude a user's uploads, presumably it may be because that user has a lot of uploads? And if the user has a lot of uploads, then, with a bit of luck, there may be a category such as "Category:Uploads by Example". And then you could search with -incategory:"Uploads by Example". -- Asclepias (talk) 15:21, 21 December 2023 (UTC)
After more thought, that idea was not useful, because if the string "Example" is displayed only in a category, it is found by the simple "-Example". What we are looking for is a way to exclude also files where the string is present only in the upload history. -- Asclepias (talk) 03:46, 23 December 2023 (UTC)
Assuming that user's name USERNAME is in the wikitext for their uploads, -insource:"USERNAME" should work. - Jmabel ! talk 19:40, 21 December 2023 (UTC)
Thank you, that does the job! And I see we can also include the User: bit like so -insource:User:USERNAMEVuccala (talk) 09:23, 22 December 2023 (UTC)
Vuccala Note that this will only work, if the user has oneself included as author (usually). This won’t work for files where the user is only the uploader, e.g. the search query file: bluecheek butterflyfishes yields today 4 results. But the query file: bluecheek butterflyfishes -insource:"user:Speravir" will not filter out the image I’ve uploaded. — Speravir – 23:18, 22 December 2023 (UTC)
But that's the thing? @Vuccala wants to exclude the files authored by a specific user, not files that have been uploaded by a user, but are imported and could have been imported by anyone else? OTOH if you want to exclude mass uploads by a user (if only few search results are from the user, then why make the effort to exlude this few unwanted files from the search result), Then there will be in most cases a category like "imports from XY-GLAM by UserYX". C.Suthorn (@Life_is@no-pony.farm - p7.ee/p) (talk) 13:32, 23 December 2023 (UTC)
That's not how I read the OP's question. Although it would help if they clarified it with at least an actual case. If the goal was merely to exclude all files authored by a user, identified in the description pages, the simple "-Username" should do it. (Not "-User:Username", because "User:" is generally either not displayed or not written, although it would be found with -insource if it is written in the wikicode.) The OP says that they do not want to see the "user's uploads", which I understand as meaning all files uploaded by the user, including all the files not authored by the user, and including all the files where the username is not present (save in the file history), which is precisely the difficulty. Filtering with categories was my first idea mentioned above, but it probably has no more advantage than the simple "-Username". The -insource syntax may find also the rare cases where the username is present in the wikicode without being displayed. There's apparently still no easy solution to exclude all uploads by a user. -- Asclepias (talk) 14:43, 23 December 2023 (UTC)
I'd like to exclude files both authored and uploaded by a user, but I think the solution Jmabel gave works well enough. (and a correction, yes, just -insource:"USERNAME" is better, without the User: bit.)
@Asclepias: I'll clarify with an actual case. I'm often searching for photos of animals and get many unwanted results of some user's bulk upload of sports teams/entertainers/cartoons/etc. that contain that animal name. For example, searching "vixen" is frustrating because there's an entertainer with that name but since most of the uploads are from "S._Bollmann" I can now append "-insource:S._Bollmann" to get rid of them. But continuing, there's further unwanted results of museum pottery uploaded by user "Pharos" which I'd like to remove, but since his username isn't in the source, -insource:Pharos doesn't work but I can instead use something like -insource:metmuseum.
The main thing, I think, is that I'm pretty new here and it didn't occur to me to use -insource: along with authors/usernames like that.–Vuccala (talk) 14:32, 24 December 2023 (UTC)
Oh, I have to correct myself, because a slightly different query stings works: file: bluecheek butterflyfishes -"Speravir" (in my case also without the quotes, but this depends on, how unique a user name is). — Speravir – 23:24, 22 December 2023 (UTC)
The string "Speravir" is displayed in the license review section of that description page. That's possibly how the syntax "-Speravir" finds it. The string "User:Speravir" is not present, even in the wikicode, and it is not found with -insource. But the string "Speravir" is present and is found. The -insource:username does not work when the uploader's username is present only in the file history. For example, the file File:James Weddell Expedition.jpg is not filtered out by it. (By the way, does the review of File:2 Bluecheek butterflyfishes (px-380037).jpg meet the condition "Reviews by image-reviewers on their own uploads will be considered invalid."?) -- Asclepias (talk) 03:46, 23 December 2023 (UTC)
You are right in all matters, Asclepias! And your side remark is especially bad for me, because I did this already quite often with other files. — Speravir – 00:29, 25 December 2023 (UTC)

Creative Commons frowns on such behavior. Their statement relating to copyleft trolls can be found below:
"Put simply, “license-enforcement-as-business model” is a perversion of the founding ideals of Creative Commons. We condemn this behavior.
These aggressive enforcement actions lessen trust in open licensing, and they erode the good faith ecosystem that is the basis of the commons.
Together with our community, we will continue to take action to deter those who leverage CC licenses in bad faith. The health of the commons
depends upon it."
Full text can be read here.
A growing number of us who have been harassed by Pixsy, acting on behalf of the photographers they represent, are planning to launch a Subreddit and website on this topic. The aim of this Subreddit/Site will be to share the names of these bad-faith actors and to provide support and resources for those who are dealing with similar legal threats and harassment.
If Pixsy truly cared about enforcing photographers' copyrights, they would focus on real copyright infringement rather than attempting to extract money for minor attribution errors. I will share a link to the Subreddit and website once they’re available. CopyLeftTrolls (talk) 20:27, 25 December 2023 (UTC)

AbchyZa22 (talk) 17:21, 24 December 2023 (UTC)

The best way to have a safe answer about the copyright status of the official version of this artwork would be to obtain an official statement on this matter from the municipal council of Caracas and from Omar Cruz, the artist who created the artwork. Someone interested should try to obtain that.
Other than that, it is a question for jurists in Venezuelan law.
Here, I think we can only make a few partial observations:
Someone in the DR quotes some bits of art. 2 of the copyright law to argue that this artistic work is not covered by the copyright law. That doesn't work. Cf. the first paragraph of art. Art. 2 is not limitative. There is nothing in that article that excludes artistic works from the law just because they are artistic renderings of coats of arms.
In the Ley Orgánica, art. 321 states "Normativa aplicable: Toda producción intelectual que se genere en el proceso social de trabajo se regirá por las leyes que regulan la materia, bien sean: obras del intelecto o actividades conexas, invenciones, diseños industriales o marcas. [...]". The various articles from 320 to 329 do not always mention the same terms. For example, art. 329 mentions "obras de carácter [...] artístico". The title of art. 325 mentions "Invenciones, innovaciones y mejoras". One would have to determine if art. 325 applies to this type of artistic works, and, if so, then one would have to determine if this particular work by Omar Cruz was "generada bajo relación de trabajo en el sector público, o financiada a través de fondos públicos". All that is a matter for specialized jurists in Venezuelan law.
Another thing to consider is to determine what the copyright status of the work is in the United States. If it is in the public domain in Venezuela, what is the status in the United States and who, if anyone, owns the copyright in the United States? That question could be asked also at Commons:Village pump/Copyright.
Again, instead of debating on Commons, the best and easiest solution is to obtain a statement from the municipal council of Caracas and from Omar Cruz. If they agree that this work is in the public domain in Venezuela and in the United States, then the matter is solved to the satisfaction of everybody. If they say that it is protected by copyright and not free, either in Venezuela or in the United States, then it is better to not host it on Commons, unless someone is prepared to have a legal argument with them. -- Asclepias (talk) 20:56, 24 December 2023 (UTC)

Can someone read this signature?

Can anyone read the signature on the photo at File:The Town Crier, v.15, no.47, Nov. 20, 1920 - DPLA - e4f9b50e68fa4f2e208e390a8311e8ec (page 14).jpg? - Jmabel ! talk 02:10, 24 December 2023 (UTC)

@Jmabel: I can't make it out, except for the letters LA (for Los Angeles) on the second line. But this appears to be one of several publicity photos of Walthall taken by, or at least published by, the Category:Photoplayers Studio in Los Angeles, which was active in the 1910s and 20s: here's a copy of the same photo, with the Photoplayers signature; and here's another photo obviously taken at the same sitting, again with the Photoplayers signature. If the version published in the Town Crier has a different signature, perhaps the original photographer joined the studio, or studio bought out and rebranded his work? Crawdad Blues (talk) 14:08, 24 December 2023 (UTC)
Incidentally, I think the file name and description of File:Henry B. Walthall in Ibsen's "Ghosts".jpg is misleading. This appears to be one of a series of general publicity photos, not a photo of Walthall specifically in the role of Osvald in Ibsen's Ghosts, and the source doesn't claim that the photo has anything to do with Ghosts. It simply says that (a) this is a photo of Walthall, and (b) he will be appearing in the play on the following Sunday. Crawdad Blues (talk) 17:39, 24 December 2023 (UTC)
Thanks, Crawdad Blues, I'll follow up on that. - Jmabel ! talk 00:22, 25 December 2023 (UTC)
Searching around at archive.org and newspapers.com, I found that the LA Photoplayers Studio was founded in 1914 – by three persons, G(eorge) G. Wells, E(thel) F. Vincent, and Harry N. Naugle –, and the last I could find of them was a 1919 newspaper item that they had won a lawsuit against comedians Kolb and Dill. So they might have been already out of business in 1920, with some other photographer or studio taking over their negatives. --Rosenzweig τ 01:40, 25 December 2023 (UTC)
That gives a very good indication. It allows to say that the signature looks like Wells & Vincent. Compare for example with this and this. -- Asclepias (talk) 02:45, 25 December 2023 (UTC)
Ha :-) Harry D. Naugle (not "N." as I first thought) was a guy active in film distribution. He was the manager of Clune's Broadway Theatre in LA until 1914, then worked for various "exchange" companies as they were called then, in 1917 for Vitagraph. He was probably the guy providing money and left to pursue other career goals. That leaves the other two as the actual photographers. I didn't have much luck finding anything about George G. Wells, but Ancestry gave me an Ethel Vincent, born in Minnesota in 1892, present in LA from 1910 and apparently a photographer. That might be the Ethel F. Vincent we have here. --Rosenzweig τ 12:07, 25 December 2023 (UTC)

PD-US

Hi, I wanted to transfer this file from Flickr. It seems to be old enough to be in public domain. But I couldn't find any specific date in which it was built or placed there. Should I still transfer it here anyway? If I do which PD tag should I use? Syrus257 (talk) 14:03, 24 December 2023 (UTC)

Hi @Syrus257, we have a category for the Elmwood cemetery with other grave stones which seem of lesser age. I suggest to upload it and leave a short description about when the lady died. For the question below I have no answer. Paradise Chronicle (talk) 15:43, 24 December 2023 (UTC)
@Paradise Chronicle Thanks. Syrus257 (talk) 05:21, 25 December 2023 (UTC)

Another question. This Flickr user uploaded his images under CC BY 2.0 license. But in his "about" page he wrote that he forbid the usages of his pictures in pornographic, violent or radical context. Here in Commons only the materials that can used "by anyone, anytime, for any purpose" are allowed. So can I still transfer the images from this flickr account?Syrus257 (talk) 15:07, 24 December 2023 (UTC)

@Syrus257: I think that you may not; the user is sowing so much confusion that the the files would qualify for deletion per pcp.   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 17:31, 24 December 2023 (UTC)
@Jeff G. What happens if a flickr author decides to make the same announcement long after their work has been transferred here? Syrus257 (talk) 05:17, 25 December 2023 (UTC)
@Syrus257 Actually there is also a shortcut. We also host such files on commons. I am sure the flickr uploader would allow its use on wikipedia, but unfortunately (at least in this specific case) commons is not only for wikipedia. Paradise Chronicle (talk) 05:23, 25 December 2023 (UTC)
@Paradise Chronicle I'm little confused. Maybe it has something to do with my poor English. Could you please say it in more details? Syrus257 (talk) 05:41, 25 December 2023 (UTC)
On commons there are also pictures with pornographic, violent and radical content, for informational purposes of course, but such files still exist. Also, what is so exceptional in those images? We have thousands of similar images on commons. If there is one specific image you want to use in an article, we'll help you to find one. Paradise Chronicle (talk) 06:37, 25 December 2023 (UTC)
@Syrus257 AIUI, they can relicense all their works on Flickr in one fell swoop. We can counter with Flickr-change-of-license. Fortunately, Flickr now shows us the license history.   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 05:55, 25 December 2023 (UTC)
@Jeff G. Undersood. But my question was, what if they change their user page or image description after their images are being transferred here? For example, I transferred File:Quebec-00024 - Saint Joan of Arc.jpg here 2 days ago. It is published under CC BY-SA 2.0 license. Now what if the author of this image decides today that he won't allow people to use this image in some specific cases, and write it on his user page without replacing the existing license. Then what should be done? Syrus257 (talk) 06:25, 25 December 2023 (UTC)
@Syrus257: That can be noted in the description, but it would not be a reason to delete because the CC BY-SA 2.0 license is irrevocable.   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 06:35, 25 December 2023 (UTC)
@Jeff G.Not even per PCP? Syrus257 (talk) 06:44, 25 December 2023 (UTC)
And even if we don't know if those conditions were added before or after the transfer? Syrus257 (talk) 06:48, 25 December 2023 (UTC)
@Syrus257: If before, then the license reviewer may tag it for deletion. If after, then an argument can be made at DR, and an Admin will choose.   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 07:00, 25 December 2023 (UTC)
@Jeff G. I have some more questions. But it is Christmas and you probably have many other things to do. We can discuss them later. Thank you for your time. And Merry Christmas. Syrus257 (talk) 07:12, 25 December 2023 (UTC)
@Syrus257: Same to you. Ask away.   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 11:56, 25 December 2023 (UTC)
Hi, I would send the author a message to be sure that he understands the meaning of the free license he chose for his files. Then if he didn't change the license after a few days, I would upload files to Commons. He couldn't say afterwards that he wasn't informed. Yann (talk) 08:50, 25 December 2023 (UTC)

@Maury Markowitz: requests like this are best made at Commons:Graphic Lab/Photography workshop. - Jmabel ! talk 23:36, 24 December 2023 (UTC)
I looked everywhere for a link to such a page. The "Help center" on the left does not link to it. There is a completely different "Help desk" (here), which is reached only through "Village pump", which makes it difficult to imagine how one might find it (why isn't a link to the Help desk on the Help center?). The link, which I see now at the top right, disappears when one presses + to add a comment to this page. Very confusing.
So, armed with the title you provided, I found and went to the page, and clicked the button to make a new request. That resulted in a page of gobblygook with unicode characters and multiple templates. Do we expect new users to be able to use this? Maury Markowitz (talk) 14:15, 25 December 2023 (UTC)

MP3 Uploading

Hello. I heard that on there: i must have some experience to be able to upload MP3's. I have good reasons to want that, they can be found on the history of that help desk. When will I be able to upload MP3's? If that require some group joinages, may i join that groups (while i don't made very much changes and uploades in there i am more active in the Turkish Wikipedia and i am a white list on there)? RuzDD (talk) 23:47, 24 December 2023 (UTC)

@RuzDD: on the first page of your preferences (Special:Preferences), what does it list as "Member of groups"? - Jmabel ! talk 00:20, 25 December 2023 (UTC)
@RuzDD: Hi again. I am sorry to inform you that you have triggered Special:AbuseFilter/192 by trying to upload an mp3 file with insufficient rights. Too many people try to upload audio files that are still copyrighted by the authors, performers, recorders, publishing companies, etc. without proper licenses from those people. Please document fully the sources and licenses of your audio uploads, and request Autopatrol group membership at COM:RFR when you think you are ready (once you have made more than 500 useful non-botlike edits); having that should allow you to upload mp3 files. Until then, you may reencode the audio into Vorbis or Opus and upload it with full documentation as an .ogg or .oga file (or use any other format accepted per COM:FT#Sound).   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 04:32, 25 December 2023 (UTC)
Thanks, but i want to ask another thing: is the reason of copyrighted musics generally uploaded as MP3 this is a very common format? If that is true, i think 8000, 11025, and 12000 (maybe also twices of these) Hz MP3's must not trigger an abusefilter because these sampling rates are not very common and they will be enough for me :) RuzDD (talk) 12:34, 25 December 2023 (UTC)
@RuzDD: No, that is not the reason. There is a plethora of MP3 files containing non-free music on the Internet, and we cannot host them thanks to RIAA's influence on US copyright laws.   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 12:44, 25 December 2023 (UTC)
@Jeff G. I mean that, and i know that MP3's on the Internet are generally at the sampling rate of 32000, 44100, or 48000 Hz and 8000, 11025, and 12000 Hz rates are most uncommons. Can anyone modify the filter to allow 8000, 11025 and 12000 Hz (and maybe also 16000, 22050 and 24000 Hz) MP3's? RuzDD (talk) 12:59, 25 December 2023 (UTC)
@RuzDD: I don't think the filtering system is sophisticated enough to detect and act on sampling rates. You may file a task via phab: requesting that.   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 13:03, 25 December 2023 (UTC)

Upload audio ogg file, adding "children" to infobox, adding "signature" to infobox

Hello, How do I add and audio file (ogg) to Wiki Commons? I am not sure what choices to make. It is for a musical artist. I am building her wikipedia pages. I would like to add "children" and her "signature" to her infobox. However I do not have the choices for "children" nor "signature." Do you give permission for this? If I go to the Community Portal, would they be able to help me with this?

Thanks, Demetrius Wiki-Wiki-2028 (talk) 11:56, 26 December 2023 (UTC)

@Wiki-Wiki-2028 Oh dear, so many things come together and get mixed up. I assume the article for the musician was supposed to be in the English Wikipedia and has already been deleted. That's something you need to clarify on the English-language Wikipedia and not here on Commons. Likewise the questions about the infobox and the children. You have uploaded several images here on Commons. One with the signature. That's fine so far and when the article is (again) available on the English-language Wikipedia, you can also clarify this there. However, you have uploaded further images of which you say that you are the author. However, these are very low-resolution images. This is undesirable here and is often a sign of stolen images. So if they really are yours, please upload them in full resolution and verify them with VRT. The VRT process has already started for one image, but you will probably have to add more. Then you seem to be writing on behalf of the musician, you must at least disclose this on the English-language Wikipedia, otherwise you will be banned. You can also find out how to do this there, not here. C.Suthorn (@Life_is@no-pony.farm - p7.ee/p) (talk) 15:51, 26 December 2023 (UTC)
On the conflict-of-interest issue (an issue mainly on Wikipedia, not here on Commons), see en:WP:COI. And I strongly recommend you make the required disclosures or, as C.Suthorn says, your account will probably be blocked on the English-language Wikipedia. - Jmabel ! talk 21:28, 26 December 2023 (UTC)

Category:Trains passing through Shifen Old Street,因此現在是「Category:Trains passing through ???」這樣留下未命名的問號分類,但我還沒有建立,直到這個問題解決。--125.230.89.198 12:22, 26 December 2023 (UTC)

Hello,

I am currently working on a Wikipedia article titled Fluidesign boats and would like to enhance it with the company's logo for identification in the infobox. Attached is the logo file for Fluidesign. Could someone assist with uploading it to Wikimedia Commons in compliance with the relevant copyright and licensing requirements? Here is the logo file: 15005_fluidesign-inc_logo.png.

Thank you for your assistance!

Best regards, TudorTulok (talk) 18:00, 27 December 2023 (UTC)

@TudorTulok: that logo is right on the edge as to whether it is copyrightable. I'd seek others' opinion at Commons:Village pump/Copyright. If you ask there, mention that this is about Canada, because the threshold of originality varies from country to country.
In any case, if all you are concerned with here is to get the logo into an English-language Wikipedia article, not specifically onto Commons, en-wiki (but not Commons) allows non-free use for cases like this. See en:Cadillac and en:File:Cadillac_(logo).svg for a good example of how to do this correctly. - Jmabel ! talk 19:14, 27 December 2023 (UTC)

@Darren J. Prior: it appears on all contribution pages, beside those edits that are the latest made to the page. In other words, nothing has changed there since that edit was made, and in the page’s history it would appear at the top. In the case of categories, this does not count pages or subcats being added or removed, because those edits are made elsewhere.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 23:21, 28 December 2023 (UTC)

Hello. I have a photo to upload in the article in Spanish of Tormenta (singer). It is provided by the singer herself. Normally I did it using this tag:

But what was previously a valid tag now I get "The wikitext you wrote does not contain a valid template license."

Can you at least give me a guide on where I can find out what the correct process is like now?

greetings Oscar Antonio (talk) 04:35, 30 December 2023 (UTC)

@Oscar Antonio: that template was presumably not the problem. The problem is presumably the absence of a license template. Since you don't say what file you are talking about, I can't say anything more specific. - Jmabel ! talk 06:22, 30 December 2023 (UTC)

Adding existing file to the "Media in category "Füssen"" section at Category:Füssen page

Hello. I would like to add a already existing file to the "Media in category "Füssen"" section at the Category:Füssen page. But I don't know how to add the already existing file. Can anyone please help me? Thanks in advance. P3Y229 (talk) 17:45, 30 December 2023 (UTC)

@P3Y229: Hello, Please do not do that, because this file is already in specific subcategories of the category Füssen. For the policy on categories, you can see Commons:Categories. -- Asclepias (talk) 18:19, 30 December 2023 (UTC)
@Asclepias:: Thanks for your information. Added the already existing file at the Füsssen page as an addition to an already existing, closely related image. P3Y229 (talk) 22:17, 30 December 2023 (UTC)

Upload image from unsplash.com

Hello friends, I hope you are well and Merry Christmas :) I have a question, if we see an image on unsplash.com and that image can be used on wikipedia, can we upload it here due to unsplash's free license? Is there a specific way to upload? Meyboad (talk) 22:31, 30 December 2023 (UTC)

@Meyboad: Hello, Please see the information on Template:Unsplash. If the image meets the condition about the publication date, you can upload it with any method you like. -- Asclepias (talk) 23:05, 30 December 2023 (UTC)

Pictures of my grandgrandfather

I wanna make a wikipedia page about my grandgrandfather who was a big artist and renovated for big churches in the mid 1900's, but when I try to upload some foto's it says that you couldn't figure out if the pictures arent copyrighted or something. I had these pictures in the living room since god knows what. Please help me update them I means a lot to me and I just feel like he deserves a wikipedia page after what has he done. Thank and please respond quickly. Proftomasek (talk) 17:57, 27 December 2023 (UTC)

@Proftomasek: You may need to declare your w:WP:COI before making an article about your great-grandfather. As for copyright, when did he die and which country did he live in? (to help determine the copyright status of his works). Abzeronow (talk) 18:03, 27 December 2023 (UTC)
He died in Tanvald (Czechoslovakia) on 27 July 1964 and he lived in Czechoslovakia (mainly Prague). Proftomasek (talk) 18:12, 27 December 2023 (UTC)Ce
OK, his works are protected in Czechia until January 1, 2035 and cannot be uploaded on Commons until then. English Wikipedia would only require publication before 1928 so works published before then can be locally uploaded there. (Yes, copyright terms are rather long). Abzeronow (talk) 18:21, 27 December 2023 (UTC)
@Abzeronow and Proftomasek: other than the remark about en:WP:COI (Proftomasek, please do read that) that's not quite on the mark. If Proftomasek is the heir to their (I assume from the odd wording) great-grandfather's intellectual property, and if their great-grandfather took the photos, they could upload them here under an "heirs" license tag such as or heirs. On the other hand, if the photos were taken by someone else, that person or their heirs would have to give the relevant permissions. Also, if the photos are previously published, you would definitely have to go through the process described at COM:VRT.
Proftomasek, I'd be glad to work with you on what can or can't be done. The Commons side of this is going to come down mainly to copyright issues; the Wikipedia side is going to come down mainly to conflict-of-interest issues. We can continue discussing here, or we can continue on your talk page (User talk:Proftomasek), which I'll make a point of following. - Jmabel ! talk 19:09, 27 December 2023 (UTC)
Thanks for the addendum, Jmabel. Yes, if Proftomasek is the heir to the intellectual property, then yes, they could upload as such. And they may need to get permission for the photographs were taken by someone other than their great-grandfather. Abzeronow (talk) 19:27, 27 December 2023 (UTC)
Thank you for your answer too. Proftomasek (talk) 19:44, 27 December 2023 (UTC)
Thank you for your answer. Proftomasek (talk) 19:44, 27 December 2023 (UTC)
@Jmabel, in case you didn't see it, Jan Tomášek. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 09:24, 28 December 2023 (UTC)
@Proftomasek: quite a bit in these uploads is at least problematic. You never did say whether you are the heir to the relevant intellectual property. If you are, most of this is easily cleared up. If not, it's hard to see how we can keep anything but the signature.
I'm sorry, I'm sure this is not what you wanted to hear, but the simple fact is that Commons only hosts works that are either public domain or have an appropriate free license, and only a person who holds the copyright can issue the license. For File:Jan Tomášek podpis.jpg, you are claiming to own a copyright and to issue a license on something that is probably not copyrightable; it should probably be re-tagged at PD-ineligible, and we can keep it on that basis. For the other two, you are claiming to own a copyright and to issue a license on something that was certainly originally copyrightable, may still be copyrighted, is certainly not your "own work", and where it is not clear whether you own the copyright, and (if so) on what basis. - Jmabel ! talk 19:57, 28 December 2023 (UTC)
I would probably read mid-1900s as mid-20th-century (I would write c. 1905 otherwise), but I agree with your logic. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 20:03, 28 December 2023 (UTC)
You mention that your grandfather renovated churches. If the church is in Slovakia or Czechia then I recommend that you take exterior (outdoors) photographs of the church, since the freedom of panorama laws likely allow you to publish such photos without the permission of your grandfather's heirs. You still need permission from the photographer, which is why I recommend taking photos yourself. Also Abzeronow's note about declaring conflict of interest still applies. – b_jonas 17:08, 31 December 2023 (UTC)

Account Setup

I tried to setup account but received an auto block. My current account IP address is: 2a09:bac3:a91b:166e::23c:57 and the block ID I #462087 . Please advise what issue(s) may be needed to resolve. Thank You 2603:6012:600:4F1D:95F6:5EBD:5B20:1517 18:06, 31 December 2023 (UTC)

But clearly here you are accessing from elsewhere, on an IP that isn't blocked, so just set up the account from here. That other address is an open proxy so, indeed, you cannot create an account from there. - Jmabel ! talk 19:38, 31 December 2023 (UTC)

completion to el.wikipedia.org

How can i put a file that i uploaded to this?? https://el.wikipedia.org/wiki/Σαμποτάζ_του_Έβρου ΣοΝιΔημ (talk) 19:53, 31 December 2023 (UTC)

@ΣοΝιΔημ: the help page for placing images is at mw:Help:Images/el. But as a short-cut I would suggest browsing elWP for an illustration that’s laid out the way you want to show your picture in the Evros article, then copying the wikicode from the example page while replacing the filename (and caption, if applicable).—Odysseus1479 (talk) 20:48, 31 December 2023 (UTC)

Category "Good pictures" dropdown

I have never understood how this is supposed to work. Let me give the random example of Category:Grange Chine. When I initially open this page, the dropdown at the top right of the page reads "Good pictures", giving the impression that this is what is being shown. However, when I actually click on "Good pictures", there is a message "No results" (message is too unobtrusive IMO, and main contents of page remain unchanged). Then when I click "All images" in the dropdown, the page layout changes, but the dropdown again goes back to reading "Good pictures". Is it just me, or is this dropdown not working correctly? ITookSomePhotos (talk) 23:26, 30 December 2023 (UTC)

@ITookSomePhotos: it can only be expected to work fully on a category page where there are images with the chosen designation. What happens if you click “Quality images” in the drop-down at Cruise ships in British Columbia?—Odysseus1479 (talk) 01:57, 31 December 2023 (UTC)
@Odysseus1479: Of course, it can only display images of the chosen type when some exist, but when none exist it should still behave sensibly. As I said, category pages initially come up ostensibly showing "Good pictures", even though when you explicitly choose "Good pictures" there are said to be "No results" (yet the page itself confusingly carries on showing what actually appears to be all members of the category). So perhaps pages come up initially showing "All images" (in the category), but no, apparently not, since choosing "All images" produces something different again. It is confusing and appears broken to the ordinary user. BTW, at Cruise ships in British Columbia the dropdown does not work at all for me (unresponsive). ITookSomePhotos (talk) 20:54, 31 December 2023 (UTC)
@ITookSomePhotos: it’s supposed to create a gallery of borderless images above all the other content, each with a small badge indicating the type of ‘goodness’. (It does not filter or hide items on the rest of the page.) Yesterday it was fairly prompt, but when I tried today my request went into a queue—as indicated in the status line, which is indeed “unobtrusive”, speaking diplomatically. ;) Give it a few minutes, though; it did come through for me eventually. (I believe “All images” means all those designated in the menu below, not literally all.) TBH I don’t use the tool often or know much about it; I suggest posting at the Technical Village Pump for more info about its function or to find out who maintains it.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 21:37, 31 December 2023 (UTC)
P.S. I just noticed that Help:FastCCI is linked from the bottom menu item.—21:47, 31 December 2023 (UTC)
@Odysseus1479: Thanks, what you say does make sense. It seems to me, then, that the main problem, or the biggest source of confusion, is that the category page initially displays with the heading "Good pictures", giving the obvious impression that the initial page contents are "Good pictures", and that choosing something else from the dropdown list will change those contents to something else. I think it would be much clearer if the dropdown initially said something like "Choose type" ("type" isn't the best word), and also if the behaviour was improved when the chosen type doesn't exist -- not just a tiny line "No results" that appears to contradict the fact that the page as a whole remains populated with exactly the same items as before, i.e. what seems like the same "results". klete keller

Hi, maybe someone can help - i'm not a lawyer and can't figure out all these complicated licenses.. the only photo I could find of Klete Keller that may be allowed on wikipedia is this: https://www.flickr.com/photos/emmymik/1012273538 ..It currently has a status of: "some rights reserved" - https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/2.0/ CC BY-NC-ND 2.0 DEED This might as well be chinese to me - can someone advise if this photo can be added to the Klete Keller wiki page without risk of deletion? thank you 84.247.97.10 04:40, 31 December 2023 (UTC)

That is a no go for Commons because it has a noncommercial restriction (NC) and doesn't allow derivative works (ND), both of which go against what Commons considers a free license. Abzeronow (talk) 16:23, 31 December 2023 (UTC)
ok thank you - saved me alot of work for nothing.. do you know where I can find a pic of Klete Keller that can be used? appreciate any help. 84.247.97.9 00:39, 1 January 2024 (UTC)
On Flickr, when searching for photos after the basic term or name you're searching for, click the "Any license" and select "Commercial use & mods allowed" to find images free enough for use on Wikimedia Commons. I just tried that with "Klete Keller" and unfortunately didn't find any images so licensed on Flickr. -- Infrogmation of New Orleans (talk) 00:48, 1 January 2024 (UTC)

Category:Category:Cantonal police of the [editing] question

Wondering if it can be edited to put the correct links? It's in here. Ominae (talk) 07:44, 23 December 2023 (UTC)

Well the category has already some images see Category:Kantonspolizei Thurgau. If you want to ad images to the category, the categories are at the bottom of every page and with hitting the + sign a field in which you can add letters in it opens. Then the available categories will appear. Paradise Chronicle (talk) 15:48, 24 December 2023 (UTC)
Nah. I'm talking about the "Cantons of Switzerland" portion for Kantonspolizei Thurgau (I'll use that). The "Cantons of Switzerland" has URLs going to commons page for the various Swiss cantonal police forces. I'm trying to see if it can be edited in order to update the links. Ominae (talk) 04:43, 25 December 2023 (UTC)
it's not good practice to have different title formats for subcats of similar concepts. you may want to start com:cfd to choose 1 format. RZuo (talk) 12:40, 2 January 2024 (UTC)

Can someone help provide text translations of the text on these images

I have uploaded all the images currently in the category Category:Ujikofuda and they are all of the same object. Can someone help provide translations of the text present on the object? It was written in 1873 and isn't the most legible. I can take a better picture if required. Immanuelle ❤️💚💙 (please tag me) 06:10, 28 December 2023 (UTC)

Even just transcriptions would be good. Some of these characters I really cannot figure out what they are supposed to be, since I think they have archaic forms or the government official had bad handwriting. Immanuelle ❤️💚💙 (please tag me) 06:47, 28 December 2023 (UTC)
