Note about copyright violations below[edit]

All copyright violations listed on this talk page as of the date of this message occurred either through good faith mistakes, a misunderstanding of policy, or both. I do not want anyone to think that I intentionally or carelessly disregard copyright laws, and I would never wish to put my account status with the Wikimedia projects in jeopardy, as I love being a Wikimedia contributor. The website doesn't own the copyright of the photo. My family does. We've allowed the website and others like it to use it publicly, and we have every right to allow Wikimedia to use it, as well. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Packer1028 (talk • contribs) 06:00, 2 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

As a courtesy to other editors, it is Commons:Signatures policy to sign your posts on talk pages, user talk pages, deletion requests, and noticeboards. To do so, simply add four tildes (~~~~) at the end of your comments. Your user name or IP address (if you are not logged in) and the date will then automatically be added along with a timestamp when you save your comment. Signing your comments helps people to find out who said something and provides them with a link to your user/talk page (for further discussion). Thank you.

Sorry for the late response! Your clarifications on my question definitely helped me understand the copyright issue. Sorry to both you with one more question, but is there any way I can... appeal the copyright notices on my page? The first one was a flag based on a photo I uploaded for which my family had the original copyright, but which has been widely used anyway and which was thus flagged as a copyright violation, while I've already explained my mistake with the January 6 cover. I'm fine leaving them up as reminders, but I worry about being seen as blatantly ignoring copyright and as a problematic user of the site. Packer1028 (talk) 06:45, 3 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Deletion of image for January 6 cover[edit]

(copied from this user talk page to provide context for the original conversation regarding the above infringement notice, and for ease of access for me)

I'm confused and would like some clarification so that I don't make the same mistake in the future. For the January 6.png photo (since deleted), how would it not be considered public domain if it were included in the government's own publication of the report? Is there a notice I missed in the actual publication which stated that the photo was not, in the specific way it was used on the cover of the report, a work product of the federal government? I've noticed the same issue with photos used inside the report and I'm honestly... well, confused. Love contributing to Wikimedia and would hate to be blocked for unwittingly violating policy. Regardless, I apologize; it was not my intent to infringe on anyone's copyright.

Packer1028 (talk) 04:52, 11 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

The problem was that the photo used in the cover was cropped from a stock photo (which requires a license to use). The report itself is public domain but the individual images used inside it may not be. The committee likely purchased a license to use the non-free images in the report but that doesn't give Wikimedia the right to re-host them.
For the January 6th report here are some guidelines:
I hope this helps Vozul (talk) 16:28, 11 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

File:Davorko Vidovic portrait.jpeg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

I did not upload the picture; I just moved it into Commons because it had been verified by a human source as being okay to add. I'm putting this notice here and on the talk page for future reference. Packer1028 (talk) 21:27, 24 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

  • This file is a copyright violation for the following reason: First published in the UK in 1906, and not simultaneously published in the US, by an author who died in 1972. It is thus still covered by a pma. 70 copyright term in the UK (even if its pub. +95 US copyright term has expired).

Did not realize it was not simultaneously published in the U.S. in 1907. Was marked as public domain on IA, so I assumed it was fine. My bad. Packer1028 (talk) 23:23, 7 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I have placed an appeal on the deletion request just to clear up any confusion I had, and because of one thing on page 8 that may have also made me think it was PD in the U.S. I'm once again willing to accept being incorrect on that front, though. Warning[edit]

Hi Packer1028. I noticed that you've made a malformed deletion request: omitting the year, month, and day. Here, {{Delete}} is not for speedy deletion, please see COM:DP. When you want to delete a page by manually using the {{Delete}} template (rather than the automatic Nominate for deletion or Nominate category for discussion tool in the Tools menu on the sidebar per COM:DR#Starting requests and COM:CFD#Starting requests), you must follow the instructions in the template, including the "Click here to show further instructions" portion (or Commons:Deletion requests/Listing a request manually policy or the "By hand" portion of COM:CFD#Starting requests, normally collapsed), otherwise you will create a lot of work for other people. Warning: such edits are not tolerated and have led to account blocks, as "We cannot work here with people who are not willing to follow our procedures, in particular for deletion requests."   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 03:15, 8 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry, was not trying to create a headache. I actually do not want the file deleted, and created this so as to remove the "speedy delete" template, but have never created a deletion request before, nor did I know I was missing anything. As I said in my previous post on this talk page, the last thing I want is to get my account blocked.
I noticed you fixed the year, month, and day; thank you. Is there still something I need to do to fix this? Packer1028 (talk) 03:21, 8 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
You're welcome. Just avoid that mistake in the future.   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 03:37, 8 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
