Copyright help regarding File:C Sharp Logo 2023.svg

I don't know what license I should put, it's just the new logo of CSharp I got from the official Microsoft website --Cobaiahackers (talk) 14:54, 1 November 2023 (UTC)

@Cobaiahackers: That should be PD-textlogo and I've now marked it appropriately, but in the future please don't upload content when you do not specifically know that it is either in the public domain or free-licensed. - Jmabel ! talk 16:59, 1 November 2023 (UTC)

Can I get some help

Hi I'm Kylie I'm new here I have seen that there are some"bots" that edit around Wikipedia and they are really doing a great job. So i would want to know how to get my own. I know that i won't be able to edit probably cause I'm new, so that's why I'm in the need of using it.

Pls get back to me with an answer. Kylie (talk) 18:48, 1 November 2023 (UTC)

You made my day. Which programming language will you be using for coding your bot? --Achim55 (talk) 19:14, 1 November 2023 (UTC)
Bots can be written in almost any programming language. The choice of a language often depends on the experience of the bot writer, which languages they are familiar with, or on the availability of pre-developed libraries to perform the desired task. The following list includes several libraries to assist with bot tasks. Kylie (talk) 04:52, 2 November 2023 (UTC)

Photographing an old photo found in a book

Hello Everyone, I want to upload an old photo found in a book published in 1989. The photo is older, and the original author is anonymous. Could I share it? If so, which license shall be used? Bernardo de Claraval (talk) 04:54, 2 November 2023 (UTC)

@Bernardo de Claraval: Hi,
How older is the picture? If it was first published in 1989, it is probably not OK (unless it is really old, and the copyright expired long before). Yann (talk) 11:04, 2 November 2023 (UTC)
From my understanding, the picture was taken in the early 1970's, however the author has never surfaced, my best guess is that it was taken in a Studio that no longer exists. Bernardo de Claraval (talk) 17:01, 2 November 2023 (UTC)
Early 1970s photographs would be still in copyright in many jurisdictions. Abzeronow (talk) 17:03, 2 November 2023 (UTC)
I see now, thank you for the information. Bernardo de Claraval (talk) 17:13, 2 November 2023 (UTC)

Public transportation vehicles and their logos

Am I allowed to post my own photographs of public transportation vehicles such as trains, buses, ferries, etc. They do have logos that I do not own the rights to. I have already posted a picture under public domain, and it is of a ferry in Sydney, Australia. If I must take it down, I will.

Just a bit concerned. --KonlyandhisBeer (talk) 10:53, 2 November 2023 (UTC)

@KonlyandhisBeer: Hi,
It is OK if the picture is not focused on the logo, but on the whole vehicle. See Commons:Deletion requests/Pokemon Jet and other related DRs for similar cases. Yann (talk) 11:02, 2 November 2023 (UTC)
KonlyandhisBeer@: If you are asking about File:Olive Cotton river-class ferry departing Barangaroo, F3 Parramatta line.png it looks totally fine. The logo is so tiny that de minimis does not even apply. BTW, for the future, it is better to use jpg format for photographs rather than png. You will see another editor has brightened your photo as it was very dark. Ww2censor (talk) 11:11, 2 November 2023 (UTC)
Thank you @Ww2censor and @Yann! My question may have been somewhat silly, but I was just thinking that the rules were most strict until proven otherwise. Whether my question were silly or not, thank you for helping me as a beginner! I may also take Ww2censor's advise to use a .jpg format for photographs.
Have a good day, --KonlyandhisBeer (talk) 19:54, 2 November 2023 (UTC)

How do I know if a Wikipedia page I created is being reviewed for Wikipedia?

@Wapsie Crossing: : It appears you might be asking about this English wikipedia page in one of your subpages at w:User:Wapsie Crossing/sandbox. Articles in your sandbox are not reviewed without being submitted for review. You should move it to draft space per the details here w:Wikipedia:Drafts#Creating and editing drafts and when it is ready you can submit it for review, but, while I am not a reviewer, there are several issues that will need fixing before it will be accepted such as how the references are done. Regarding deleting my uploaded image

Recently I uploaded an image named BD_Clean_Logo.jpg. It has been deleted due to copyright violation. But I have taken the logo image with permission from the respective organization. Still, why would there be copyright violation? Iamsabbirhosen (talk) 21:35, 2 November 2023 (UTC)

If you upload something created by anyone other than yourself, you have to show why it is free licensed. If you have specific permission from the copyright holder to release it under a free license (see COM:LICENSE for details), you can have them confirm it, see COM:VRT for how to do that. Image can be undeleted if shown to be confirmed as free licensed. -- Infrogmation of New Orleans (talk) 22:21, 2 November 2023 (UTC)
@Iamsabbirhosen: and I see you uploaded it again (under a slightly different name) after it was deleted. This is a definite no-no, and if you do it again it will get you blocked. If you can get appropriate permission from the copyright-holder, then you can get it undeleted through Commons:Undeletion requests. If not, then please do not upload it a third time. - 04:59, 3 November 2023 (UTC)
Your other upload File:শাহ্‌ নুরুল কবীর শাহীন.jpg looks equally problematic. Only the holder of the copyright can issue a license. If you do not have at least a basic understanding of copyright law, I strongly suggest that you do not upload anything other than photos you took yourself (and that are not photos of other people's copyrighted work), or you are likely to get yourself in quite a bit of trouble. - Jmabel ! talk 05:02, 3 November 2023 (UTC)

How can I change an outdated company logo and replace it with the new logo?

The Metrovacesa company needs to change the logo, as many media are using this logo for publications and this logo is no longer correct, it was changed many years ago. Victoria Sampietro Tolosana (talk) 09:03, 3 November 2023 (UTC)

@Victoria Sampietro Tolosana: Hi,
It depends on the logo, so it would help if you specify which company and which logo. In brief, if the logo is very simple, upload it on Commons, and then change the logo on Wikipedia. Otherwise it will need to be uploaded as fair use on Wikipedia. Yann (talk) 09:54, 3 November 2023 (UTC)
And if uploading to Commons, upload to a distinct filename, because the old logo is still of historical interest. - Jmabel ! talk 20:17, 3 November 2023 (UTC)

uploading of photo

what is the minimum and maximum size is required for uploading of photographs. Aviphoto (talk) 10:20, 3 November 2023 (UTC)

@Aviphoto: Hi,
There is no real minimum and maximum sizes, but the larger, the better. Always upload the original image with EXIF data first, and then you can upload a crop if needed. Yann (talk) 10:50, 3 November 2023 (UTC)
@Aviphoto Before doing that, you should however take a look at the EXIF data, just in case it contains your name or the location or anything else you do not want to disclose. C.Suthorn (@Life_is@no-pony.farm - p7.ee/p) (talk) 11:43, 3 November 2023 (UTC)

Video game cover and copyright

Would uploading this - https://www.flickr.com/photos/farusantos/30920814516/ - be acceptable on Wikimedia Commons without breaking any kind of copyright or other rules or guidelines? The photo itself is placed under CC BY-SA 2.0 Deed so its usable for commercial use and mods are allowed, however I'm unsure if the cover art of the game would be under any copyright whereby it would violate any Wikimedia Commons guidelines to upload. Helper201 (talk) 23:42, 3 November 2023 (UTC)

@Helper201: I can't imagine how that cover art would not be copyrighted. When does it date from? What country? - Jmabel ! talk 01:08, 4 November 2023 (UTC)
@Jmabel: okay, thanks. The game was released in 2012/2013 (different dates depending on worldwide location), the specific box in the photo looks like it’s from Canada or France, given its also has French language text on it as well as English, though the publisher is a Japanese company. Helper201 (talk) 01:13, 4 November 2023 (UTC)
@Helper201: Yeah. Zero chance that isn't copyrighted, so the person who snapped the photo is in no position to license it without a release from whoever owns the copyright on the art. - Jmabel ! talk 01:39, 4 November 2023 (UTC)

Getting message about block

Wikiproject to upload fair use non-commercial images?

I have been involved in two dicussions from different countries where it would be allowed to upload images if they were not used commercially or used to inform. Is there some wikiproject where files can be uploaded that are only fair to use on wikipedia? Or does anyone know any other Wikimedia project for files and/or images? Paradise Chronicle (talk) 04:59, 5 November 2023 (UTC)

@Paradise Chronicle: I can't see how such a thing could possibly be done. And I think you may be confusing two (or more) issues.
"Fair use" is a provision in U.S. law, with parallels in some other countries, that allows certain uses of copyrighted material without a license, and which always depends on the context in which the material is used. That is, there is no such thing as an image that is inherently "fair use" or inherently not "fair use", it's always about the context in which the image is used.
Entirely separately from that, some images have licenses that allow non-commercial use, but do not allow commercial use ("NC" licenses). This is completely unrelated to the issue of "fair use".
Each Wikipedia has its own rules on fair use and on images that have only a non-commercial license.
As far as I know (correct me if I'm wrong) there is no Wikipedia that has different policies for NC licenses than for images that have no free license at all.
Policies for using images on a "fair use" basis vary among the different Wikipedias. For example:
  • The German-language Wikipedia, does not allow this at al
  • In the English-language Wikipedia, each such image requires an explicit statement of the rationale for using the image for each specific article where it is used, making it absolutely necessary to have a file page for the image in en-wiki so that there is a place to state that rationale.
  • I'm not as familiar with the policies of the other Wikipedias, but these two alone would seem to be enough to preclude any possibility of a single central repository of such images.
Jmabel ! talk 05:59, 5 November 2023 (UTC)
You are right, I was not aware that "fair use" was an US law expression and that the German wikipedia does not allow this at all. Thanks for clearing that up. Paradise Chronicle (talk) 08:11, 5 November 2023 (UTC)

Hi there, we need to update some of the pictures that were uploaded many years ago. The original operator has left us and the project has ended. The images are all now out of date and we'd like to delete them to ensure no out of date pics are used by others.

Can you help please?

P. Pgthorne01 (talk) 13:54, 6 November 2023 (UTC)

You may need to know a little bit about Wikipedia, Commons and free licenses. When you uploaded the pictures a few years ago, you gave it a free license. This license cannot be revoked. Trying to do that would be considered vandalism. As the pictures are online for a few years now, they are probably within the SCOPE of this project and can be used forever by everyone for everything (within the limits of the law). You can however upload new pictures and you can also ask at the individual Wiki projects to use the new one's instead of the old one's. If there is a good reason, this may be done. Why was the New York State Excelsior License Plate.jpg deleted?

I noticed the page for Vehicle registration plates of New York has a very low resolution picture for the most recent license plate. I figured it would be better to replace it with the high quality one from https://dmv.ny.gov/plates/excelsior-plates. Upon trying to upload that picture, it said that the image already existed and was deleted in the past. Is there any reason for this? It's a government image so does that count as free license? Unhelpful algorithm for constructing the Descriptions displayed on Uploads pages

When I look at the photos I've uploaded (at https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special:ListFiles/Misha_Wolf&ilshowall=1), the content of the table cells under the heading "Description" makes no sense. Text from fields I have supplied has been concatenated, with some other words thrown in, resulting in a strange word salad. Would it be possible to change the algorithm so that it produces helpful text? Many thanks. :) Misha Wolf (talk) 23:44, 6 November 2023 (UTC)

  • The text in Special:ListFiles is a pretty naive dump. Basically, that page exists to give you visual access to your uploaded images, and also gives you a certain number of characters worth of the text you provided. It has no notion of formatting, no way to parse Wikitext, etc. I personally can't imagine investing into it: it's not really considered a "public-facing" page, it's an internal maintenance page provided for our convenience as editors. - Jmabel ! talk 04:04, 7 November 2023 (UTC)
@Misha Wolf: The template works pretty well if you provide a noun phrase like a URL as the source of the file: "Uploaded a work by SBS Radio from https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OYCjGfQJ4kw with UploadWizard" to take a recent example from my own upload history. Because you've provided a sentence instead, you've got something uglier. If you could come up with a template that would work for both, it might be possible to get it changed. I managed to do that for cross-wiki uploads a year or two ago. I can't currently work out where this setting would be changed, so that might be your second challenge. --bjh21 (talk) 13:10, 7 November 2023 (UTC)

Okay people, I see that the version I wanted to be is there and apparently - it shows the right thing. Still it is a mystery for me why oryginally the second version was not showing any changes. Maybe I should just have waited?
Or maybe it's some kinda "saved" picture in my browser...? And this is why it was shown as it was shown...?
Okay, anyway, thank you for the help, I will take care of things from here. Sorry for the commotion.

Trying to upload an image for a videogame

Hi, this is my first time editing on wikipedia/media. I'm trying to upload the promotional art for a videogame article, whichi believe to be acceptable as other articles use simialr images. however, when uploading, i wasnt sure how to deal with the copyright. after uploading i have gotten a message saying the copyright information was insufficient and the file may be deleted within 7 days. how do i make it so this file is acceptable on wikimedia, like other videogame promotional artworks are? Remix Fantastica (talk) 10:02, 7 November 2023 (UTC)

@Remix Fantastica: such images are copyrighted and require permission from the holder of the copyright. You say "other articles use simialr [sic] images." Commons doesn't have articles. Can you point at what you would consider a similar image on Commons? - Jmabel ! talk 15:36, 7 November 2023 (UTC)
i meant other articles on wikipedia, sorry. i presumed the images used on wikipedia articles are hosted on wikimedia. this would be an example of an article tht uses a similar image as the one im trying to upload Remix Fantastica (talk) 22:57, 7 November 2023 (UTC)
this one https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sonic_Heroes forgot to put the link Remix Fantastica (talk) 22:58, 7 November 2023 (UTC)
Images for wikipedia are hosted on commons with the exception of "fair use" images that are only allowed on projects that have a fair use rationale (like en.wikipedia.org). If you need help for fair use images you need to ask at the project, that has the applicable fair use raitonale. C.Suthorn (@Life_is@no-pony.farm - p7.ee/p) (talk) 00:15, 8 November 2023 (UTC)
@Remix Fantastica: the only image in the Sonic Heroes article that comes from Commons is File:Yuji Naka' - Magic - Monaco - 2015-03-21- P1030036 (cropped).jpg, which I presume you will agree is in no way comparable. They two that might be considered comparable are both hosted on en-wiki itself, with stated rationales for the non-free use. - Jmabel ! talk 03:41, 8 November 2023 (UTC)

@KaterynaBolotnikova Your company has an article, written about it on Wikipedia, but it is absolutely not your Wikipedia page.
Logos are copyright works. Very few logos are acceptable here. Yours appears to be on the wrong side of the border of complexity. Information fields required when loading a cropped image (original one made by a different author)

I would like to upload a cropped and straightened version of an existing image (not mine), and in this special case I have a few doubts about how to correctly fill-in the following Information parameters :

1) date: Is it referred to the original image or to the modified one? 2) source: Is it me (the current user) or is it the source of the original image that has been modified? 3) author: Is it the current user who has modified the original image, or is it the author of the original image? 4) other versions: Is it best to use 'Extracted from' or 'Derivative versions'?

Many thanks and best regards Centoesettecento (talk) 12:44, 8 November 2023 (UTC)

@Centoesettecento: I assume you are talking about uploading a new version under a distinct filename, not overwriting with a cropped version. I strongly recommend that you do the crop with the CropTool, which will do this all correctly, but if you are going to do it manually:
1) date should be the date the photo was taken, so it does not change
2) source should not change
3) author normally unchanged, but you may add "cropped by" and your name.
4) other versions Extracted from is most correct, and add a reciprocal Image extracted to the original. - Jmabel ! talk 16:26, 8 November 2023 (UTC)

media needing renaming

It would be really nice if the media needing renaming categories would autosort chronologically, and not alphabetically. Files with a name starting with "V" may never be renmamed, if new requests come in faster than renames are done. C.Suthorn (@Life_is@no-pony.farm - p7.ee/p) (talk) 13:32, 9 November 2023 (UTC)

@C.Suthorn: Welcome to the help desk. I'm not understanding how you want me to help, but I'll try. By selecting "move", then entering the new name, and providing a reason, you can ask to have the files renamed. Best, 20 upper 13:45, 9 November 2023 (UTC)
C.Suthorn (@Life_is@no-pony.farm - p7.ee/p) (talk) 17:51, 9 November 2023 (UTC)
Admins don't particularly take these up in alphabetical order (though I'm sure a few do). This isn't a task I particularly do, but when I do other tasks that are sorted alphabetically and have any time-sensitivity, I usually take them in a pseudo-random order. I suspect others do the same. - Jmabel ! talk 03:03, 10 November 2023 (UTC)
Guidance on how to cite sources is at English Wikipedia w:Wikipedia:Citing sources. As for uploading .pdfs of magazines, the magazine content would either need to be in the public domain or explicitly under a free license such as Creative Commons-Attribution.
Typically a logo like this, unless it is very simple or very old (e.g. a century or so), is copyrighted, so Commons could host it only if the owner of that copyright granted a free license, which is very unlikely. - Jmabel ! talk 03:15, 10 November 2023 (UTC)

How to get a redirected page's categories (using the API)?

Using Wikimedia's API, I can get the categories for an article, unless that article redirects to a different article. For example. this article https://stardewvalleywiki.com/10,000_Bundle (which is using the Wikimedia API and isn't different than normal wikipedia) redirects to this: https://stardewvalleywiki.com/Bundles#g10000_Bundle . How do I get the categories of the second article? Because the first one is a redirect page, it does not have a category. 3point1415 (talk) 22:33, 9 November 2023 (UTC)

MediaWiki (the software that site runs on) is different from Wikimedia (the organization that operates Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons [this site]). How to search for "good" pictures within a category and all its subcategories?

Hello,

I am looking for a better lead pic for https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Agriculture_in_Turkey

Is there a way to search for the "good" pictures in "Category:Agriculture_in_Turkey" and all its subcategories please?

And is there a way to search for the "featured" pictures in "Category:Agriculture_in_Turkey" and all its subcategories please? Chidgk1 (talk) 13:08, 11 November 2023 (UTC)

Hi @Chidgk1, yes there is sort of. Category:Agriculture in Turkey there you just hit the good pictures button on the top above the tool bar. Then there opens a top down selection of the best images. You have also the option to improve your search in another top down menu. Here are the good images from the category of Agriculture of Turkey. Enjoy. Paradise Chronicle (talk) 17:59, 11 November 2023 (UTC)
Oh so does that include the subcategories? I mean are there are only 37 good images including all the subcats? Chidgk1 (talk) 05:04, 12 November 2023 (UTC)
I believe so, as many of the Good images in Agriculture in Turkey are not in that category, but in a subcategory such as this one. This one is in the subcategory sheep in Turkey, which is a subcat of livestock in Turkey, which is a subcat of animal husbandry in Turkey, which is finally a subcategory of Agriculture in Turkey. Paradise Chronicle (talk) 10:00, 12 November 2023 (UTC)
But that is a "quality image" not a "good image". I removed Agriculture in Turkey from File:Thay997020.jpg and the number dropped to 36 despite that pic being in Category:Fruit of Turkey which is in Category:Agricultural products of Turkey which is in Category:Agriculture in Turkey. Should I report a bug and if so where? Chidgk1 (talk) 15:19, 12 November 2023 (UTC)
The help page for the gadget FastCCI says that the files in the subcategories are included. "Quality images" are included in the "good pictures", at least as defined by this gadget, as well as "featured pictures" and "valued images" (which are not necessarily good in the ordinary sense, but are suppposed good to illutrate a subject). What would be your inclusion criteria for "good images" in your question? 36 is the number of files currently in the category, not the number of "good pictures". The number of "good pictures" currently returned by the gadget is 58, including featured, quality and valued, in the category and its subcateries. You can use the option to include only one of those types of files. The gadget may not always work or it may take some time to work. If you see "connecting" near the top left of the page, it means it's trying to work but it is not showing the results yet. Of course, there are also a lot of very good images that do not have those labels. -- Asclepias (talk) 16:22, 12 November 2023 (UTC)
This is a screendump of the category. I don't see the "good pictures button". Where can I find it? Thanks. Wouter (talk) 10:45, 12 November 2023 (UTC)

Hi, I was able to make the image a bit more warm and "coming more to life", but I am not able to Overwrite it, so I uploaded it over the Upload Wizard. What you say of that one File:ETH-BIB Emil Bührle - Ausschnitt von Com X-H065-08-02 (cropped).tif 2.jpg? Paradise Chronicle (talk) 00:16, 18 November 2023 (UTC)
@Paradise Chronicle: very grainy, and it is certainly a good thing you didn't overwrite. I can see how some might prefer that version, but it is by no means an unambiguous improvement. And the two should certainly be linked with Derivative works / Derived from in their respective "other versions" sections. - Jmabel ! talk 01:36, 18 November 2023 (UTC)
Yeah, well I am not a specialist, but I believe my version was better than the original, specially for the suite, therefore making the image a bit a "bigger picture". In my opinion your version is better for the head, which of course is the prime focus of the picture. Paradise Chronicle (talk) 13:48, 18 November 2023 (UTC)
I've added my own, which is intermediate between the original and Paradise Chronicle's version. I think it remains a matter of taste which of the three is to be preferred. Unsurprisingly, I'd favor my own, but I leave the decision entirely to others. - Jmabel ! talk 01:54, 18 November 2023 (UTC)

Thank you, Paradise Chronicle and Jmabel! Maybe we can use now both versions in the different languages, because there is no best version. --Hadi (talk) 16:49, 18 November 2023 (UTC)

What can cause a PNG to look different to its SVG?

I'm having a big of trouble understanding why this flag image has a different png from svg. Here you see the png has no coat of arms. Open this image's Commons page and then click on the image again, which will show the svg. Why does it look different to the png?

Panamitsu (talk) 21:26, 7 November 2023 (UTC)

Presumably some flaw in the SVG. - Jmabel ! talk 22:04, 7 November 2023 (UTC)
You both see a CoA in the svg? My browser doesn't show it. -- Asclepias (talk) 16:57, 8 November 2023 (UTC)
@Asclepias: I see it when I look at the SVG itself, but not the PNGs generated from the SVG. - Jmabel ! talk 03:00, 9 November 2023 (UTC)
Interesting. My system doesn't show it in the svg. Possibly for the same reason that the mediawiki system doesn't catch it when it generates the pngs. -- Asclepias (talk) 05:00, 9 November 2023 (UTC)
The flaw in the SVG was a bunch of undefined filter="url(#filter3791)". Fixed now! —CalendulaAsteraceae (talkcontribs) 06:28, 9 November 2023 (UTC)

How to Remove Morphed images from Wikimedia Commons

A page I am updating contained morphed images of a person. The image was removed from the page usage. I would like to know if the Image can be deleted from the server? Prasanth K P (talk) 17:45, 10 November 2023 (UTC)

I'm wondering whether or not a band's logo is simple enough not to be considered a work of authorship.

I've been creating a userbox on Wikipedia about a band called The Cat Empire. I would like to know whether or not it is simple enough not to be considered a "work of authorship", as I would like to use it in the userbox's icon. I could also create a crude scrawling of the logo if that is necessary.

Here's a copy of the logo, found online: https://i.pinimg.com/originals/a0/9a/43/a09a43c3f2c7fae41e87fd36490e3856.jpg

Is there a way to filter the search for images with the highest resolution available? for art particularly. Thanks Pacocresta (talk) 21:43, 13 November 2023 (UTC)

@Pacocresta: Certainly nothing at all routine. Someone might have a tool for this. I don't see any relevant functions in MediaWiki API help page, so I'm not sure there is a way to program such a thing. - Jmabel ! talk 01:43, 14 November 2023 (UTC)
Not quite "highest", but Special:MediaSearch has an "Image size" option that allows you to ask only for larger images. For more control, you can use the "file measures" feature on both Special:Search and Special:MediaSearch. For instance adding filewidth:>1920 to your query will get you files at least 1920 pixels wide. There is a way to ask for an explicit sort order, but sorting by resolution doesn't appear on the list. --bjh21 (talk) 10:48, 14 November 2023 (UTC)

Is it possible to track new subtitles added to files in a category?

Hello! The Basque Wikimedians User Group is developping the project called Ikusgela. There are a good amount of videos there, and some of them have subtitles. Now we are asking other people to add further subtitles, but we can't track if that happens. Is there a way to track new subtitles added to any file in that category? Thanks! Adding image in black and white form

Is it possible to add an image to an article in black and white form when the original uploaded image is in colorized form, without uploading a separate black and white image for it? Lamba Chaura (talk) 10:20, 14 November 2023 (UTC)

@Lamba Chaura: Without overwriting the original (which would be a bad idea), that's a good question. In a quick look at mw:Help:Images and en:Wikipedia:Extended image syntax, I did not find an option to display an image with a b&w filter, but you may want to have a deeper look at those help pages. Anyway, uploading a separate file would be a good solution. -- Asclepias (talk) 16:01, 14 November 2023 (UTC)

Add an image from your PC

Hi, I would like to add an image that I created personally for a Wikipedia page, but every time I try to upload it I get this message:

"We could not determine whether this file is suitable for Wikimedia Commons. Please only upload photos that you took yourself with your camera, or see what else is acceptable. See the guide to make sure the file is acceptable and learn how to upload it on Wikimedia Commons. The content must be freely licensed. Do not copy files illegally (in violation of copyright) from other websites. If you believe that the file meets our licensing standards: Upload the file again or click "Retry failed uploads"/"Submit modified file description"."

What can I do to solve the problem? Thanks and best regards. Il Grande Aukan (talk) 20:41, 14 November 2023 (UTC)

@Il Grande Aukan: Hi, and welcome. I am sorry to inform you that you have triggered Special:AbuseFilter/153 by trying to cross-wiki upload png and smaller (<50,000 bytes or <2,000,000 pixels) jpg images as a new user. Such uploads of png images are not allowed at all. The following applies to each image. You indicated it's your own work. Usually when someone uploads a png or smaller jpg image, it's a copyright violation taken from the web. Please upload the full-size original of it per COM:HR, including any metadata, but if you were not the original image designer or photographer, that person may need to license it on their official website or social media or send permission via VRT with a carbon copy to you. Also, any png image will look fuzzy when scaled down (due to design decisions discussed in phab:T192744) or jaggy when scaled up, so you may want to upload svg or jpg versions, too. If you can't get a compliant license, the image may still be uploaded to English Wikipedia in compliance with en:WP:F because we don't allow Fair Use here. If you use our Upload Wizard instead, you should be able to avoid that filter. You have also triggered Special:AbuseFilter/156 by trying to upload smaller (<50,000 bytes) jpg images as a new user. — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 01:55, 15 November 2023 (UTC)

Hi, and welcome. What billing thing? — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 01:53, 15 November 2023 (UTC)
There is nothing where Wikimedia Commons (this site) would ever have sent you (or anyone) a bill. What entity billed you? Might it be the Wikimedia Foundation? - Jmabel ! talk 05:34, 15 November 2023 (UTC)
Were you asked to donate while browsing Wikipedia? If so, please e-mail donate@wikimedia.org for any questions. The Wikimedia Foundation is the organization that collects those donations and uses them to operate Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons. However, it is separate from the community of volunteers that provides assistance here. Anon126 ( ) 06:34, 15 November 2023 (UTC)
It has almost certainly nothing to do with this website. You're not telling billing by whom and for what. I doubt that anyone can help with something vague as "the billing thing". Also, posting your e-mail is a good way to receive unwanted stuff, including possibly fake bills. -- Asclepias (talk) 15:32, 15 November 2023 (UTC)

Adding a PDF to an article.

What is the process of adding a PDF to an article as verification. In this example, I'm referring to a degree received. Thank you. VictorEdgar (talk) 02:20, 15 November 2023 (UTC)

You could upload a scan, screenshot or photograph of the degree. You can follow the instruction given at the Upload Wizard. Paradise Chronicle (talk) 03:08, 15 November 2023 (UTC)
@VictorEdgar: but more to the point, assuming you are talking about a Wikipedia article, there is normally no need to upload a PDF anywhere to cite its contents. If the PDF in question is already online somewhere, cite the copy already online. If it is not, then it is presumably a scan of a printed source, which may be cited. Citations to not need to be even to materials that are on line, only to materials that are, at least in principle, available to be viewed by another person. E.g. look at the citations and references for Abraham Goldfaden. - Jmabel ! talk

Contrast enhanced ISS images

Am I doing this right? Does this look OK? I have another 16 of these ready to upload. I downloaded the digital negatives from NASA and adjusted them in darktable. The bottom right corner ends up a bit dark, because I'm subtracting the haze uniformly across the whole image, which exaggerates a slight vignetting in the source image.

@Tim Starling: You are doing fine. I wouldn't worry about your image not being in all ways better, that's exactly why we don't overwrite. Offhand the only things I'd do differently are:
  1. be overt about the retouching, something like "white-balancing by Tim Starling".
  2. assuming it is your intent to release the white-balancing into the public domain, be overt about releasing your enhancement with a CC-0 tag or other similar means of waiving rights.
  3. Use Derivative versions on the original file page to link to your retouched version. - Jmabel ! talk 20:34, 15 November 2023 (UTC)

Uploading photographs of my grandfather and his art, 2 part question

Hello, my grandfather passed away in 1999 and more recently my grandmother passed away this year. There is a wikipedia page for my grandfather and I thought I would upload some photos of his art that he took himself before he passed. My father is the sole heir to everything they owned, and I'm the 2nd in line for inheritance. My father gave me permission and is encouraging me to upload these things. I just wanted to verify that there wouldn't be any issues with that.

There is also a headshot that my grandfather had professionally shot back when he was doing art shows in the 1950s that I would like to use as the picture of him for the wikipedia page. The headshot doesn't have any information attached on which studio took the picture, or if copies were ever made. I believe it is the only copy, though, as it was the only one he had in his possession. I would also like to know if that is safe to upload and use as well. Thank you for your time! Elroz Briggs (talk) 23:57, 23 November 2023 (UTC)

Image created by me but based on an historic image provided by the British Library

I obtained some images of pages of a book printed in 1650 from the British Library's Imaging Service. These I edited so I could use them to create a single folio image for my own purposes. The result is therefore my own work, based on copies from a 1650 book which is obviously out of copyright. Can I submit it to Wikimedia? Can the terms of the BL Imaging Service affect this? (I can't check it just at the moment as their website is inaccessible.) Ceperman (talk) 18:15, 12 November 2023 (UTC)

@Ceperman: if these are faithful copies at each step of the way, then as far as Commons is concerned these are simply uncreative photos of a two-dimensional work in the public domain, and may be uploaded as such (PD-old-100 or similar tag). Neither you nor the British Library has any copyright involved here.
Note that UK law may view this differently: there is a so-called "sweat-of-brow" doctrine in UK copyright law if it took a lot of work to make the clean copy. I believe (though I could be wrong, User:Clindberg might know) that it has never been tested in a courtroom. Commons pretty much ignores it. - 22:40, 12 November 2023 (UTC)
Any "sweat-of-brow" here would be mine, as I cleaned up the copy, and I'm happy to give up any copyright claim. Does this make it OK just to submit it as my work? Ceperman (talk) 18:45, 16 November 2023 (UTC)
@Ceperman: There is also the sweat of an employee of the British Library's Imaging Service. — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 18:58, 16 November 2023 (UTC)
As I said, Commons really doesn't recognize the "sweat of the brow" claim. The only concession that I'm aware we've made to it is that there are some UK GLAMs who freely provide us with reasonably high-res content on the basis that we don't host their super-high-res versions of the same content. - Jmabel ! talk 19:44, 16 November 2023 (UTC)
The original reply only mentioned "sweat-of-brow" in relation to cleaning up the image, which I did. But hey, if this isn't an issue for Wikimedia then that's good enough for me. Ceperman (talk) 14:44, 17 November 2023 (UTC)

Why does this svg appear different than when it is converted to a png?

For some reason this image appears differently as a png and svg. Here is the png, if you open the svg (open the image onto Commons, then click on it), the yellow background shrinks in size, leaving a large portion of the background white. Why does this do that? Can I have some help fixing it? Panamitsu (talk) 02:58, 14 November 2023 (UTC)

	.fil1 {fill:#A2260B}
	.fil0 {fill:#FFDF00}

and the issue where the contents of the image were 100000 times as tall/wide as the ostensible height and width. I'm not sure why the only shapes that display are the rectangle background and the three stars, but hopefully someone else can help with that. I'm looking forward to finding out what's going on there! Also, you might want to put future requests for help with SVGs at Commons:Graphic Lab/Illustration workshop. —CalendulaAsteraceae (talkcontribs) 06:44, 14 November 2023 (UTC)

@DelanoAcademyCanada: is your school logo in the public domain? If not, is it free-licensed? - Jmabel ! talk 19:46, 16 November 2023 (UTC)
Did I create the logo? No but I am part of a school trying to make a Wikipedia page for our school. It is extremely difficult to do and not very user friendly. Is there any other way of making a page? I have also tried to put coordinates in my article but it won't show on the map.

@DelanoAcademyCanada: I'm guessing we are talking about the coat-of-arms-style logo at the upper left of https://www.delanoacademy.com/. That is almost certainly copyrighted (and trademarked). To host that on Commons, we would need a the copyright-holder to go through the process described at COM:VRT to offer a free license to use the image. That copyright-holder will be either the designer of the image or the academy itself (in the latter case we would need a representative of the academy to do the COM:VRT thing). Once you know that is moving forward, you can upload the image with Special:UploadWIzard, making sure to mark it with the appropriate authorship plus three tags: the relevant license (probably , Trademarked, and .
If you cannot get the relevant permission, and you want the logo for an article on en-wiki, you can take advantage of their policy for limited non-free content. You would use en:Template:Non-free logo. Note that this approach does not involve Commons at all: you would upload to en-wiki, and the file you upload would not be accessible to Commons or the other sister wikis. - Jmabel ! talk 18:29, 17 November 2023 (UTC)

This is the logo of the Canadian Baseball Network, the page of which I am in the process of creating on Wikipedia. However, I don't know what the copyright rules are for uploading photos of logos. I took this one directly from the website (here). I would appreciate the help. Thank you.

--Omnis Scientia (talk) 08:30, 17 November 2023 (UTC)

@Omnis Scientia: That website is "Copyright 1995-2023" per the bottom line. Also, per the Berne Convention and COM:Canada, since 10 April 1928 every copyrightable work created in Canada has been automatically copyrighted the moment it was fixed in a tangible medium of expression, so that logo is still copyrighted (at least since the website design in 1995). What led you to believe that the logo was either free-licensed or under COM:TOO Canada? — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 11:42, 17 November 2023 (UTC)
A misunderstanding. I'm still trying to figure things out here. Given how many logos are available on Wikimedia, I wrongly assumed this one must be too. My apologies; I will remove it.

Copyright help regarding File:PLEXUS 4 covers 1980 to 1985.png

I'm drafting a page for Wikipedia (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Draft:PLEXUS_West_Coast_Women’s_Press)

I found these old photos of old (1980s) front pages from a now defunct newspaper, on a site called LibraryThing, which describes itself as free and open.

The source was a search like this: https://www.librarything.com/search.php?search=PLEXUS+West+Coast+Women’s+Press&searchtype=newwork_titles&sortchoice=0

I get that this is less concrete than an image marked with an explicit modern CC license. But I'd like to know if the images will suddenly disappear from my Wikipedia article.

I have a similar concern with an image (https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:PLEXUS_Nexus.png) on my draft Wikipedia page. It is taken from the archive of the Berkeley Barb newspaper on JSTOR. The source for that is (https://www.jstor.org/stable/community.28033489?seq=5). That page is clearly marked in the upper left corner as OPEN ACCESS.

Look at the “contribs” link that usually lurks near your username: Special:Contributions/CalendulaAsteraceae
It has a chronological list of all of your contributions. BananaSlug (talk) 00:54, 18 November 2023 (UTC)
@Turwaq: In more detail: a link to your contributions page (Special:Contributions/Turwaq), which has all your edits, is next to the "Log out" button in the top toolbar, and you can also get there with the keyboard shortcut Control+Option+Y [⌃⌥y]. You can also go to your user page and click "User uploads" (Special:ListFiles/Turwaq) in the left toolbar, in the "Tools" section. (The toolbar may be on the right in the layout for RTL languages; I haven't checked.) And as @BananaSlug notes, you could, if you wish, edit your signature to link to either or both of these pages! I did this, by going to Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-personal, checking the "Treat signature as wikitext (without an automatic link to your user page)" box, and typing in the wikitext I wanted for my signature.
Regarding your original question, it does look like you've uploaded two very similar images, but I'm not sure if these are the images you were wondering about. —CalendulaAsteraceae (talkcontribs) 03:11, 18 November 2023 (UTC)

Urheberrecht File:118d P90358889 highRes the-all-new-bmw-1-se (1crop).jpg

Hallo,

Danke Euch schon mal! Viele Grüße, Wikisympathisant (talk) 15:43, 17 November 2023 (UTC)

Hello, Unfortunately, some people upload non-free files with fake licences. Hundreds of files must be deleted every day. If you happen to make, although in good faith, a cropped version of a copyvio, unfortunately the result will still be a copyvio. Files on Wikimedia must be free for any use. "Free for editorial use" is not equivalent to a free licence and is not a CC licence. -- Asclepias (talk) 16:56, 17 November 2023 (UTC)

Thank you very much for your reply . I see and understand, that such files are deleted, that is not the problem. First the original pict. had CC on it. From my point of view that means that the commons-user can not trust in the CC-licence the file shows? 2nd is: So I'm now on a list and it is possible I cannot work here any longer? Please let me know. Thank you again. Regards to Canada, Wikisympathisant (talk) 17:25, 17 November 2023 (UTC)

@Wikisympathisant: Obviously, we cannot always identify promptly that an uploader has lied about a license. I'd guess that at any given moment between 0.5% and 1% of files on Commons have some sort of licensing problem, which is to say between 500,000 and 1 million of the 100 million files here. That's not easily fixed, but I think it is actually about the lowest percentage of any even vaguely comparable site on the Internet. Flickr probably runs over 10% copyright violations, and they are not even close to the worst offender. - Jmabel ! talk 18:46, 17 November 2023 (UTC)
The biggest difference is that commons is proactive when it comes to copyrigh while Flickr is reactive Trade (talk) 22:38, 17 November 2023 (UTC)

Ok, I refer to this lines on my disc.-page (there in German ...) The file you added has been deleted. If you have written permission from the copyright holder, please have them send us a free license release via COM:VRT. If you believe that the deletion was not in accordance with policy, you may request undeletion. (It is not necessary to request undeletion if using VRT; the file will be automatically restored at the conclusion of the process.) Warning: Wikimedia Commons takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing. From this I guessed, there must be a list of the violators ... respectively I'm seen know as "mis-user" of commons. KR, Wikisympathisant (talk) 18:54, 17 November 2023 (UTC)

That's a boilerplate warning when a file has been tagged as a copyright violation. You're not on a list that I, as an administrator, are aware of. As Jmabel says, we cannot always identify quickly when an uploader has lied about a license. Abzeronow (talk) 19:31, 17 November 2023 (UTC)

Oh thank you for this clarification, I'm feeling much better after your information Best regards, Wikisympathisant (talk) 19:56, 17 November 2023 (UTC)

@Wikisympathisant however, you are right with "can not trust in the CC-license". This is the case for every media at every platform: Whatever the description says can be wrong and copyright law everywhere says, the user of a media file is responsible for copyright infringements even if them had no way to know, that it is a copyright infringement. That is different from all other areas of law. If for example you bought a car and had reason to beleive it was legal but only find out that the seller had stolen it after you owned it for some year it is stil legally yours. With copyright it is the other way around: If your family has owned a piece of artwork for 50 years and than find out it was stolen you have to return it to the original owner. With copyright you are ever only on the save side if you created a work yourself or know the creator personally. C.Suthorn (@Life_is@no-pony.farm - p7.ee/p) (talk) 07:14, 18 November 2023 (UTC)

How to internationalize signature

This section was archived on a request by: —CalendulaAsteraceae (talkcontribs) 22:57, 26 November 2023 (UTC)

Inspired by a discussion above, I want to internationalize my signature. I went to Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-personal, checked the "Treat signature as wikitext" box, and edited my signature to

CalendulaAsteraceae ()

but when I clicked Save, it turned into

CalendulaAsteraceae ()

so when I sign, the text is just converted to English. I've seen other users' signatures include . Is there something I should be doing differently here? —CalendulaAsteraceae (talkcontribs) 03:36, 18 November 2023 (UTC)

Hmm, the box at meta:Special:Preferences says

Wikitext signature (if unchecked, the contents of the box has to be plain text, treated as your nickname linked automatically to your user page; if checked, the contents should be source code, including all links; templates etc., images, and external links are not allowed)

so it seems like the the automatic substitution is probably to prevent people from using templates in their signatures? In which case I'm not sure where I should be asking for an exception w.r.t. internationalized text, but it sounds like it's probably a pan-wiki thing. —CalendulaAsteraceae (talkcontribs) 21:25, 18 November 2023 (UTC)
Moved to mw:Help talk:Signatures. —CalendulaAsteraceae (talkcontribs) 07:57, 20 November 2023 (UTC)

Need for Full Name Attribution Option in the new Photo Upload Form

In the new photo upload form, there is a missing option to enter one's own first and last name. I publish photos under the Creative Commons 4.0 Attribution license. I should have the ability to specify how I am credited under these photos. I, Jakub Hałun, am the author of these photographs, not 'jakubhal,' which is a technical and arbitrary account name for me. -- Jakubhal 14:02, 18 November 2023 (UTC)

Comment I blocked this user for a week for reuploading copyright violations after warning. Yann (talk) 19:00, 18 November 2023 (UTC)
@グリーンベレー: three ways to do this legitimately. (1) The copyright-holder can open an account here and do their own uploads. (2) The copyright-holder can publish the photo and offer the relevant license on any web site that is clearly under their control (e.g. on Flickr, or on a public-facing social media page) and you can cite that page as the source when uploading. (3) The copyright-holder can write to COM:VRT either to release the relevant license for a specific image or images, or to give a general authorization that they trust you to upload and indicate licenses for materials for which they hold copyright. Note that in that last approach, they should be clear in stating that they understand that you will be posting and indicating irrevocable licenses; they can revoke their permission for you to post for them beyond a given date, but they cannot retroactively take back licenses that you have indicated on their behalf while you were their authorized representative.
Sorry you got blocked before this got sorted out. If it were a longer block I'd try to work with you to get the block removed, but given that it is only a week I'd suggest you just sit tight now and try to do things correctly after the block expires. - Jmabel ! talk 19:21, 18 November 2023 (UTC)

  1. I've hidden your email address and phone number. Please don't publish those here!
  2. We don't have an account called User:Mugojja edward bernes or User:Mugojja. Are you sure you are on the correct site?
  3. If you were blocked, then the only place that you can dispute that is your user talk page. You should not be editing other pages, even from an IP address, while blocked. If you were blocked from using even your user talk page, it was presumably because you abused the privilege of accessing your talk page while blocked.
  4. If somehow you are both blocked and something is wrong with your login (an unusual combination, but I guess it could happen) you still should be able to access your user talk page without logging in.
  5. You don't really have an "inbox" here on Commons: the wiki pages are publicly visible.
  6. If when you say you were "blocked" you actually meant something other than that your account here has been blocked, please explain more precisely. If it is easier for you to use a language other than English, go ahead (or try writing it in both that language and English). - Jmabel ! talk 07:06, 20 November 2023 (UTC)

Picture

I am looking for a picture for the Morrisite War, I have found three pictures but I do not think any of them can be used. The first one you are able to buy but I do not know if wikipedia is allowed to do that. I do not know the copyright laws for the second one. I do not know how accurate the first two are as there was no report of a "massacre of the Morrisite" as government forces entered the area and arrested the leaders. The last one was a political cartoon but I also do not know the rules for the political cartoon. Overall if none of them are usable what is the best thing to do? If I know a few artist can they just make their own painting? LuxembourgLover (talk) 17:38, 20 November 2023 (UTC)

@LuxembourgLover: The first one is from a book published in 1870 [4]. It's in the public domain and it's ok to upload a copy to Commons. There are copies on several websites. Upload preferably the best copy you can find. A use in Wikipedia depends if it's useful there. You can evaluate that with other interested editors on Wikipedia. -- Asclepias (talk) 18:39, 20 November 2023 (UTC)
The third one is clearly recent, so presumably copyrighted. The second one: if the 1890 date is correct, it should be in the public domain in the U.S. It's clearly something that would have been made for publication, and promptly published. Any text or image published in the U.S. before 1928 is PD-US-expired. (Sound recordings are trickier.) - Jmabel ! talk 23:59, 20 November 2023 (UTC)

Newbie's general question

Hey, I came here from Polish wiki (editor). I'm not ready to upload or manage photos yet, and I understand that editor's duties are different here, so I checked out other tasks, notably management of Galleries. If I understand correctly they run parallel to "normal" Categories we know from wiki? Can I help in managing them right now without special user roles? And lastly, are they actually useful for Commons visitors? No sarcasm intended, some wiki stuff tends to be more or less practical. Tried to ask on IRC but... I didn't touch a client in years and failed miserably :) Grateful for your time spent on my silly questions! InternetowyGołąb (talk) 20:28, 20 November 2023 (UTC)

Galleries in the main namespace (not the galleries in the user namespace) are like Wikipedia articles: their usefulness may differ depending on various criteria, the topics, their state, the interests of different users, and you, and any other user, can edit them. Good galleries have a sound logic to them and use representative files. One example of a good gallery, IMHO, is Rosa. Other good galleries may have a chronology logic, different from the associated category, etc. Bad galleries pick files subjectively without logic or promote a particular user's photos. I assume that you have read Commons:Galleries, but if not, please do. It links to examples. -- Asclepias (talk) 21:27, 20 November 2023 (UTC)
Yes I did, but looks like not deeply enough :) This was intended as less-formal conversation between editors.
Indeed, the gallery you mentioned not only is well maintained, but also have useful interwiki. I would definitely like to work with such ones one day.
Once again thank you. I think this help-case might be considered solved. InternetowyGołąb (talk) 22:17, 20 November 2023 (UTC)

Relatively few countries allow this (especially indoors, and where the copyrighted work is the main subject of the photo), but some do. - Jmabel ! talk 03:06, 21 November 2023 (UTC)

Renaming a category when the new title already exists

Hi, I want to rename Category:Endopterygota to Category:Holometabola, but the latter already exists as a redirect with history to the former. What's the best thing to do here? Monster Iestyn (talk) 12:13, 21 November 2023 (UTC)

  • @Monster Iestyn: Done. Requires an admin to delete the target before the move, and there's some other trickiness.
  • I hope there was consensus to do this. Only afterward did I notice you were moving this away from the name used in en-wiki. - Jmabel ! talk 19:11, 21 November 2023 (UTC)
@Jmabel: Thanks, though actually the en-wiki article has been renamed, the link to en-wiki's "Endopterygota" you're seeing on the sidebar is now a redirect, and the new title "Holometabola" is on a separate item (basically it's complications from wikidata, this turns out to be my fault as I linked the former Holometabola redirect to the second item earlier this year) Monster Iestyn (talk) 20:26, 21 November 2023 (UTC)

Images across wikis

The would like to use the files https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/fi/0/0d/Etel%C3%A4-Tapiolan_lukio_logo.svg and https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/a/a3/Etis.jpg/1600px-Etis.jpg in my proposed english language version of the article Etelä-Tapiolan lukio. How can I movethem to/use them on english wikipedia? Thanks! InRRainbows (talk) 13:31, 21 November 2023 (UTC)

@InRRainbows: If the copyright warning is correct for the file fi:Tiedosto:Etelä-Tapiolan lukio logo.svg, then you need to make a copy of that file and upload it directly to en.wikipedia under the Non-free content policy. You can use the "Upload a non free file option". The other file, File:Etis.jpg is on Commons, so it can already be used without uploading another copy. For instructions on how to display images on en.wikipedia, see the help page en:Help:Pictures. Before you put too much work into the proposed article, make sure that the topic meets the notability criteria of en.wikipedia. -- Asclepias (talk) 15:02, 21 November 2023 (UTC)

Similarly, is microsoft.com/content/dam/microsoft/final/en-us/microsoft-product-and-services/power-platform/PPL-Power Platform logo.svg from microsoft.com/en-us/power-platform/ also below the ToI? BhamBoi (talk) 07:01, 20 November 2023 (UTC)
Your first link (Sales_scalable.png) gives "We are sorry, the page you requested cannot be found." I tried a few variants on the URL, but couldn't make it work. On your second link, I can't tell what image you might be talking about.
The third one (PPL-Power_Platform_logo.svg) is probably below the TOO (I assume that is what you mean, I don't know what TOI would be). It seems comparable to the Bing logo, and we consider that to be below the U.S. TOO. - Jmabel ! talk 07:14, 20 November 2023 (UTC)

Utilizzo immagini caricate

This is not about Commons. It is about Wikipedia. A proper place to discuss an editorial disagreement about the contents of a Wikipedia article is its talk page on Wikipedia. The edit comment that the other editor wrote to remove that file from the article was not because it was misplaced, but because the article has many files already. -- Asclepias (talk) 15:20, 21 November 2023 (UTC)

Expired Patents of MP3

Hello. I wonder why MP3 loadings are still unwanted. I wonder this, because MP3 patents are expired. EN Wikipedia says this. And, there is my reason to want load MP3's: MP3 is more widely supported than OGG, OPUS, and etc; so it will be more compatible with for example old browsers. I know WAW is more compatible than MP3, but WAV files are generally bigger because it does not use compression. I think MP3 is a good compromise between size and compatibility. Why MP3 uploads are still unwanted while its patents expired, and how can i upload a 22050Hz 40kbps mono MP3 file? RuzDD (talk) 10:07, 23 November 2023 (UTC)`

@JoanFelix104: Hi, and welcome. I am sorry to inform you that you have triggered Special:AbuseFilter/192 by trying to upload an mp3 file with insufficient rights. Too many people try to upload audio files that are still copyrighted by the authors, performers, recorders, publishing companies, etc. without proper licenses from those people. Please document fully the sources and licenses of your audio uploads, and request Autopatrol group membership at COM:RFR when you think you are ready (once you have made more than 500 useful non-botlike edits); having that should allow you to upload mp3 files. Until then, you may reencode the audio into Vorbis or Opus and upload it with full documentation as an .ogg or .oga file (or use any other format accepted per COM:FT#Sound). — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 14:07, 23 November 2023 (UTC)

@Gologmine The copyrightholder, which is usually the photographer, needs to release it under an acceptable license (Commons:Licensing#Well-known_licenses). Unless the image is clearly marked as such on social media/webpage (rarely the case but it can be done), the copyright holder can mail a confirmation of licensing to Commons, instructions on that at COM:VRT. Automatic Transcode

Hello. I asked to this help desk today for same file, and now i have another problem. Commons automaticaly creates two transcodes, and they have unsuitable values. It creates a MP3, and its sample rate is 44100Hz, but it should be 22050Hz. OGG transcode contains the same problem. Also, they have very high bitrates, for example MP3 is 116kbps VBR but it should be maximum 80kbps CBR. Also, another problem: MP3 and original file are stereo, but OGG is mono. They should either be all stereo or all mono. What can i do to solve this problem?

@SharonPapierdreams: It took me some time to figure out what you were talking about. It seems you are talking about some list articles in the English-language Wikipedia. There's always only one image displayed for each entry there. When a related category on Commons also exists, it can be linked. To take one example: In en:National Register of Historic Places listings in Ellsworth County, Kansas, if we look at the edit box, we see that some entries are linked to the Commons categories by the addition of a parameter "|commonscat=" followed by the name of the category. So, to the entry "Ira E Lloyd Stock Farm", if we add the line "|commonscat=Ira E. Lloyd Stock Farm (Ellsworth County, Kansas)", that adds a link below the image, like this. -- Asclepias (talk) 19:36, 23 November 2023 (UTC)

A supposed inaccuracy in my map

Depsite the fact that I based my map :

my map

on two actual maps, this user @M.Bitton still claim that my map is original research I tried to reach out with him on the issue, he responded with closed eyes, ignoring all tge argumenrs I gave and dismissing my arguments in a such biased way, Sources=BS for some reason. Well, I reach out the community then for settling this issue As I said to him before, I think the tag should be removed for the following reason

His First claim: "first, contrary to what is claimed, this map is not based on any actual map" it is based on actual maps two actually that I just showed below, so this point is absurd. You will say it do not show thr battle, well I added Al Istiqsa and page number+just check wikipedia article about maghrebi war I just mimcked what is written there in a map and the article is well sourced His second claim " it has no reliable source" bruh I literally added new one and remade the map, plus again if you think gallica bnf is BS that is your problem. Plus do you know french or arabic the sources I added are in these languages so how could you judge on them?

His third claim "Secondly it does not mirror maps of that era" absolute no-sense because I just showed two maps of this supposed era+one is even from for 1707 and other in that era two, the first one show Moroccan control over touat the other show in french"Roy Alchandora dependant du roi du Maroc" which locate in present day Mauritania, plus I used another Science po university map All this, I believe the community can settle this Remember I am novice, I do not know very much about tagging and stuff,so be comprehemsive شادي (talk) 18:43, 23 November 2023 (UTC)

Please don't ping me again. M.Bitton (talk) 18:45, 23 November 2023 (UTC)
The community will decide the accuracy of my map, You are not directly concerned, just need to give community context. شادي (talk) 18:48, 23 November 2023 (UTC)
That's not the job of the community and your map is both 100% baseless original research and contradicted by RS. M.Bitton (talk) 18:51, 23 November 2023 (UTC)
As you must see community, he still refuse any attempt of real arguing insisting that my image should stay tagged
He even suppressed the discussion I did, showing how weak his argument is, after he kept saying This original research without explaining why, depsite I showed him images and sources that show how my map is indeed confirmed by actual maps and sources say
And he keep saying my map is baseless contradicted without refuting directly my arguments
This clearly a dogmatic approach, so All my hopes are in the community. شادي (talk) 18:53, 23 November 2023 (UTC)
@شادي: it looks to me like you've cited your sources, and if someone disagrees with you they should be able to say exactly where you've gone wrong. If the other user thinks your sources are "BS", then he probably should indicate exactly which of these sources he thinks are erroneous, irrelevant, etc. instead of leveling a blanket accusation.
It's up to the individual Wikipedias (and any other possible reusers) to decide whether or not to use a particular map. Unless someone presents specific evidence that absolutely invalidates a map (e.g. shows that it misrepresents the data in its claimed sources, or the uploader cannot provide any sources to back up their map and we have a strong consensus that the map is wrong, misleading, or inappropriately tendentious), we almost never delete a map from Commons. Someone who disagrees is welcome to upload their own alternative map (including a derivative version, which they may link) and site their sources. So, really, there is nothing here that needs to be resolved. The person who disagrees with you has basically said, "I think this is wrong," and not presented any substantive argument. Their remark stays; I'd trust reusers to be able to determine about what it is worth; and nothing prevents anyone from using your map.
For the record the other party in this dispute asked above not to be pinged; otherwise I would of course ping him. - Jmabel ! talk 20:20, 23 November 2023 (UTC)
@Jmabel Finally a comprehensive response, thank you for your understanding and clarifying what the tag really mean. شادي (talk) 20:24, 23 November 2023 (UTC)
The tag means what I wrote (that map is not based on any published map and is contradicted by RS, that's all). Check the English Wikipedia for the various reliably sourced maps that we use and then compare them to one that you made up. If despite what's written in the tag someone wants to use somewhere, they're welcome to it. I would also like to highlight the fact that you added sources to a map that was uploaded by someone else years ago (maybe someone here can explain to you why we don't do that). M.Bitton (talk) 20:31, 23 November 2023 (UTC)
If you object to something, it's really your responsibility to say why it shouldn't be done.--Prosfilaes (talk) 21:42, 23 November 2023 (UTC)
I already did: the map in question is not based on any published map and is contradicted by other maps of the period. Basically, they took a map from Commons, manipulated it a bit and added sources to it (none of which actually looks anything like the map that they uploaded). They also added some sources to a map that was uploaded by someone else years ago. M.Bitton (talk) 22:04, 23 November 2023 (UTC)
"the map in question is not based on any published map and is contradicted by other maps of the period",Sorry to say this but you clearly suffer a serious of selective "blindness", I showed you two maps of that period and you still say that, funny indeed. شادي (talk) 22:20, 23 November 2023 (UTC)
Thank you for confirming what I said. M.Bitton (talk) 22:24, 23 November 2023 (UTC)
@M.Bitton Serious case of selective blindness indeed, you see just what you like, go on bro you take confirmation bias to a level unprecendented level.
If you read clearly my comment I responded to you BS argument but whatsoever, the dispute settled. شادي (talk) 22:29, 23 November 2023 (UTC)

you saw I thought you would not as you have not seen the two actual maps I sent you, and the second half of my message before.Interesting indeed.
PS: Whatsoever just keep my map alone, it is well sourced and based. شادي (talk) 22:35, 23 November 2023 (UTC)
Why does his response stay? It's written in omniscient mode without cites; it should be written as an opinion or at least cited, and be as untendacious as possible.--Prosfilaes (talk) 21:41, 23 November 2023 (UTC)
@Prosfilaes: I presume(s) that any Wikipedia editor who sees it can evaluate it for what it's worth. Personally, if I thought a map was bad but couldn't be bothered to get into the specifics, I'd stick to (at most) making a remark to that effect on the talk page. We probably don't have as tight a rule as we should as to exactly when Fact disputed can be used. - Jmabel ! talk 22:00, 23 November 2023 (UTC)
I have seen properly sourced maps (unlike this one) that are tagged as disputed. That's what the tag is for and I don't see how one is supposed to cite something that proves that the image in question is not based on any of the cited sources. M.Bitton (talk) 22:04, 23 November 2023 (UTC)
My map is properly sourced though, if you do not see them it is not my problem.
It is based on many cited sources two maps and two books. شادي (talk) 12:53, 24 November 2023 (UTC)
I noticed that you removed the tag: please explain what kind of sources do you expect when someone is saying that the map is not based on the cited sources? M.Bitton (talk) 22:07, 23 November 2023 (UTC)
I have duplicated the borders of the actual maps I showed you before, using data from two books too.
So my map is based on cited souces

@Prosfilaes The problem that I reached him to ask him WHAT EXACTLY WRONG WITH MY MAP, he kept saying it does not match other maps of that era.
I gave two actual maps and historical accounts of that era, he simply ignored them and I really asked him to just tell me what borders I did wrong he kept repeating what he said now, when I gave him arguments guess what he supressed my section in the discussion as you see here, idk but This might be illegal to supress discussion without archiving them (It is the case in my wiki) and that show how weak is his argument istead of responding by real arguments شادي (talk) 22:26, 23 November 2023 (UTC)

Template needs an archive link

Regarding Cc-pd

I'll just copy the request I made on the template's talk page:

Edit request

I noticed that Creative Commons recently redesigned their website, so now all the license pages look different. Apparently, somewhere in this process, their page for the CC Public Domain Dedication became a deadlink. I'm guessing they assumed they didn't need it anymore since it's been deprecated and its function has been superseded by Cc-zero. However, a link to the page is still necessary for older files.

Ergo, could someone please replace the link currently in use in the template with this archive link?: https://web.archive.org/web/20230926203737/https://creativecommons.org/licenses/publicdomain/

I made this request several weeks ago and it has yet to be done or responded to. Could someone with template editing privileges please make this change?

Thanks. — Toast for Teddy (talk) 02:40, 24 November 2023 (UTC)

False claim of ownership

On the page "Hypertext" there is a diagram which is claimed by a certain Andreariverac. However, the diagram is a jpeg from a work that is in fact mine and I used it in various forms to explain the www in 1992. A photo of a printed CERN document from 1992 clearly shows one of those forms and the date. The original file of that document was made on a NeXT computer, which no longer exists. How can this be corrected? [6]https://www.cailliau.org/IMG_20231124_230228.jpg RobertCailliau (talk) 22:11, 24 November 2023 (UTC)

Hello,

Am not sure the copyright status for this image. It's sourced from a 1938 issue of "Aviation" magazine, which is a McGraw-Hill publication. Would like to make use of the image, as it's the best one I've found showing the variable-wingspan aspect to the plane's design. Any help to determine status would be appreciated. THanks.

--Aerohydro (talk) 02:32, 25 November 2023 (UTC)

@Aerohydro: the only possible basis on which that would be OK is if it's fallen into the public domain. Under current law it will certainly be public domain after January 1, 2034, but (assuming that is the original publication of the photo) the only way it would be public domain now is if the copyright on that magazine was not renewed. You could check the 1965-1966 copyright renewals (1938 + 28 years, and sometimes people renewed a little early) to see if McGraw-Hill renewed this (most likely they were either renewing all of their magazine copyrights, or none). The relevant documents are online here. If it isn't there, then it's safe to say PD-US-not renewed. - Jmabel ! talk 03:09, 25 November 2023 (UTC)
@Jmabel: Thanks for the info. Having checked the copyright entries for the mid-60s, McGraw-Hill definitely registered their contemporary publications, but as far as I can tell, didn't do any renewals. Which is good! 04:05, 25 November 2023 (UTC) Aerohydro (talk) 04:05, 25 November 2023 (UTC)

copyright

@BoppIttybop: The image should have a license tag that tells you how you can use it and what attribution, if any, you need to provide. For example, File:Erbium-doped fiber with green light.jpg is available under a Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike 3.0 Unported license, and there is a license tag below the image description that explains what you have to do to be allowed to use the image. Commons:Reusing content outside Wikimedia and Commons:Credit line might be helpful here. —CalendulaAsteraceae (talkcontribs) 01:44, 28 November 2023 (UTC)
CalendulaAsteraceae is assuming here that you are wanting to reuse an image that is currently on Commons. If that isn't what meant then, indeed, the information about reuse should be on the specific file page. If that isn't what you meant, you'll need to as a clearer question as to just what you are trying to do. - Jmabel ! talk 04:48, 28 November 2023 (UTC)

I was wondering, if you are granted permission by a copyright holder to use their photo on Wikipedia, what happens next? Do they, say, email Commons personally and let them know? Changing photos in Commons with a better one.

Hello.

I snapped a photo of the patch used by the Arystan unit in Kazakhstan back in 2022. I saw a similar one was made in 2019. Not sure if it's worth changing it (aka getting rid of the other image that's small maybe).

For comparison, this is the first image from 2019 and this is the one I took in 2022. Ominae (talk) 15:28, 28 November 2023 (UTC)

Album Art

I am making wiki pages for bands, and I want to upload an image of the album art? Is this allowed? Metalbro (talk) 11:10, 29 November 2023 (UTC)

@Metalbro: On Commons, all files must be under a free license or in the public domain, so you are not allowed to upload album covers unless you have a formal written permission from the copyright holder. On some language Wikipedias (notably English), these can be uploaded under a fair use rationale. Yann (talk) 11:20, 29 November 2023 (UTC)

Hello. I found this image on Flickr that was listed as public domain by the uploader. I've noticed that other public domain images have been uploaded on here from flickr and I think I screwed up during the upload process. How I set this image to public domain on here so that it wont get deleted or have I messed up the upload for this image completely?

--LostplanetKD73 (talk) 21:37, 27 November 2023 (UTC)

The Flickr source has Public Domain Mark 1.0 on it, which would accept if the flickr user is the photographer. This looks like a historic photograph though so determining whether it actually is public domain is trickier. Abzeronow (talk) 21:47, 27 November 2023 (UTC)
@LostplanetKD73: I'd say there is absolutely no way to know the copyright status of that unless the account owner of the Flickr account is more forthcoming about why they believe that to be public domain. Their page gives no provenance for the photo. Unless we know more, we probably have to delete it. - Jmabel ! talk 23:49, 27 November 2023 (UTC)
This file looks like an upscaled version of the image at railarchive, which looks like a well documented website. The non-free textual description is the same and it is probably the work of the railarchive website. It describes the photo as a builders photo, i.e. taken for the company after the locomotive is completed. This would then be a 1929 photo, probably anonymous. The flickr account should probably be avoided. It copies works from various publications and tags everything public domain although it is clear that many images are not in the public domain. -- Asclepias (talk) 00:42, 28 November 2023 (UTC)
Ok thanks for the information. So I guess the bast course of action is just to wait and see what happens in the next few days since this image may not really be 100% in the public domain for at least another 5-6 years. I'll try to ascertain more info from an uploader in the future if I ever come across anymore old locomotive images that claim to be in public domain. LostplanetKD73 (talk) 04:58, 29 November 2023 (UTC)
@LostplanetKD73 if it was published in the U.S. in 1929, then it will definitely be in the public domain January 1, 1925. More likely, copyright was not renewed and it is already PD. - Jmabel ! talk 06:06, 29 November 2023 (UTC)
Ok so for future reference if the image is taken before 1925 it technically counts as public domain? LostplanetKD73 (talk) 17:10, 30 November 2023 (UTC)
Published before 1928 or taken before 1903 and unpublished until after 2002. If a pre-1978 photograph (even very old ones) were published from 1978 to 2002, they wouldn't be public domain until at least 2048, see COM:Hirtle. Yes, U.S. copyright is complicated. Abzeronow (talk) 17:15, 30 November 2023 (UTC)
@Abzeronow: Lobbyists want it so, and congresscritters comply. — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 17:29, 30 November 2023 (UTC)
Yeah, Congress hasn't exactly made it more simple. In just over 1 month, U.S. copyright will expire for 1928 published works (except sound recordings), 1923 sound recordings, unpublished works of authors who died in 1953 and unpublished works with unknown authors created in 1903. How would I go about writing a script that affects video?

Hi, I'm still fairly new to Wikimedia commons, so let me know if this question should be moved to a better place, like a place for discussing scripts and stuff.

How would i go about writing a script that affects the video that appears when you click on a video to play it? Like make it so the time display at the bottom left corner also shows the milliseconds? insne (talk) 23:16, 29 November 2023 (UTC)

@Insnesnakos: This is a fine place to ask your question, but you might want to go to Commons:Village pump/Technical in future. A script to affect video playback sounds like something you could put in your common.js page, or put in another JavaScript subpage of your user page and then load at common.js if you think you might want to share it with other people. I'm not super experienced with JavaScript, but User:CalendulaAsteraceae/common.js does have some code that adds a link to the toolbar, and my JS page at Wikisource (s:en:User:CalendulaAsteraceae/common.js) has some more complicated code, including code that loads someone else's script. —CalendulaAsteraceae (talkcontribs) 03:42, 30 November 2023 (UTC)

Hey, I uploaded a photograph to Wikimedia which is larger than 100MB, and then when trying to send an updated version, I got blocked by the 100MB limit. And at this point I cannot update the image or delete it -- all is left is to upload a completely new image, which is not great.

One of your volunteers, Ser Amantio di Nicolao (talk | contribs) took photos off of my Flickr account that I have long since removed from Flickr upon request of the subject. I did not receive a message that this was occurring. The person in these images wants them off of the Internet. Can you remove them? They are a collection that includes 44753796905, 45668230991, 31795826948, 43850099670, 44753794225, 45668235631, 44753794725, 31795832538, 30726978607, 45668232681, 31795823418, 44753797315, 45668233201, 45668235631, 44753799625, and all similar images from that date and location. @Tracie Hall and Ser Amantio di Nicolao: as you probably know, cc-by-sa 2.0 licenses are not revocable, so what you are asking for amounts to a courtesy deletion. You are not exactly making them easy to find by giving Flickr photo IDs rather than links here on Commons to what you would like deleted, though I assume we are talking about the photos of [NAME REDACTED]. I'll do my best to set up a deletion request, but I can't guarantee finding all of the images in question. - Jmabel ! talk 22:16, 30 November 2023 (UTC)
Thanks again Jmabel. I didn't see you had two entries here. I didn't give the pictures those long parenthetical numbers, so thought you all did, and that if you found a few, it would find the folder for you. Because this is published, I didn't want to mention the subject's name that would bring them all up at once. After finding a page in Wikipedia on how to delete, I made requests from each photo, and then finally read the linked note at the bottom about checking the conversation and it looked like you'd already found them all. Excuse the duplication, but yes, the subjects had not given permission for me to post, and the primary subject had requested they be removed a few years ago. She has asked again that I remove all of the photos. I hadn't realized they had been taken up by Wikimedia. I will now be going through all of my Flickr pages looking for images of strangers that might not appreciate being picked up by Wikimedia and changing the permissions, or perhaps the viewers, or deleting them. I hadn't realized so many of my images had been picked up when a year or so ago I created an account and uploaded a few for your contests. Thank you for recommending they be deleted. Deletion request created: Commons:Deletion requests/Files in Category:Los Angeles Harbor College. - Jmabel ! talk 22:23, 30 November 2023 (UTC)
Thanks Jmabel for creating my request. Tracie Hall (talk) 22:50, 30 November 2023 (UTC)
@Tracie Hall: As you can imagine, setting up a separate discussion for each photo was probably not a good way to do this. I would like to close all of those nominations as being superseded by the one central discussion (which is going to be tedious to execute, but not nearly as tedious as carrying on 40 or so separate discussions). I will give at least 3 hours for Tracie or anyone else to object to that; I realize I am going "out of process" here. - Jmabel ! talk 23:48, 30 November 2023 (UTC)
@Jmabel: Better to inconvenience one person than a whole lot of people. Thanks for volunteering. — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 00:50, 1 December 2023 (UTC)
Starting the cleanup. - Jmabel ! talk 03:07, 1 December 2023 (UTC)
Cleanup done. My apologies if I may have slightly messed up an edit summary or two in this process: I was trying to go quickly through this. I believe everything is now acceptable in terms of the files, and that there is now a single place for this discussion: Commons:Deletion requests/Files in Category:Los Angeles Harbor College. Jmabel ! talk 03:55, 1 December 2023 (UTC)
Apologies, I thought I was helping you find each one, but apparently I made it worse. Apparently your database system is completely different from the basic library databases I've worked with, combined with, perhaps, a different organization that involves needing multiple people to agree on the removal action.
I'm afraid I really have no understanding of how things work there, so this question is likely to be irritating as well, but am I right that all of the work you've done, so far, was to remove my individual requests, so as to be able to revert to this initial request and get the files into a group where one decision could be made for the entire "folder" of pictures (speaking in Google Drive terms, probably not yours)? So, we're at a recommended stage now? (Perhaps where we would have been before I was "helpful") Where the next stage would be multiple people decide whether to agree on the courtesy deletions? Tracie Hall (talk) 16:11, 1 December 2023 (UTC)
@Tracie Hall: Hi, Deletion requests are usually closed after a week. There is no opposition to your request so far, so I expect it to be closed next week. Yann (talk) 16:18, 1 December 2023 (UTC)
Thank you for the estimation!!! Apologies for my ignorance when loading those to Flickr. I had taken the photos for the young lady in question, but should have just handed her a card with all of the photos on it, rather than posting them. I didn't realize at the time that, first, she would later wish they were not on the Internet, or 2nd that an external entity might collect them. I wasn't aware of the existence of Wikimedia at the time, but I do think it's a wonderful service, and I appreciate that any of my images were deemed worthy of it. Tracie Hall (talk) 16:43, 1 December 2023 (UTC)
@Tracie Hall: these have all now been deleted. There was a clear consensus to do so, and some danger of the Streisand effect, so I saw no point to leaving it open for a week. - Jmabel ! talk 20:56, 1 December 2023 (UTC)
@Tracie Hall: FWIW, administrators on Commons have certain technical capabilities that other users don't have, but for the most part we are simply empowered to honestly carry out community decisions, not to make potentially controversial decisions ourselves. While there is a clear, standing community consensus to delete (for example) copyright violations, courtesy deletions of anything that is more than a week old is always subject to some discussion. Someone might say, "hey, that's legally licensed, and I'm using it in such-and-such place," and that is going to win out over granting a courtesy. Also, to be honest, when people claim (falsely) that they have a legal right to revoke a license they granted, someone else is likely to turn it into a matter of principle and stand by keeping the image so that we don't end up with a bad precedent of being bullied. In this case, it looks like there were no such issues, and that's great. - Jmabel ! talk 21:01, 1 December 2023 (UTC)
THANK YOU tremendously. Well, lesson learned! I hope I didn't traumatize Ser Amantio di Nicolao.
I don't see anything else in my files here likely to cause anyone panic, so no worries that you'll have to decline any future requests. I am going through my Flickr stream to prevent future issues. I don't consider myself a good portrait photographer so there are very few, but still worth the time to go through and delete. I get it that if they've been picked up by anyone already they had my permission- I just want to prevent future pickups of anything I might regret having shared for any reason. In general, I love sharing my pictures so will only be changing permissions on the rare image that I don't want to delete, but don't want used.
Thanks again to all involved.
Best,
Tracie Tracie Hall (talk) 18:45, 2 December 2023 (UTC)
