Newish user, svg. conversion

I enjoy making maps and rarely upload them on to Wikipedia in .png format. However I realise that Wikipedia mostly uses .svg and I am unsure how to upload with .svg correctly using the software I am using (Mapchart). Can someone help me make this, https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Median_Household_Income_per_County_as_of_2021_according_to_the_USDA_Economic_Research_Service.svg, a valid .svg file ready for upload on to the wiki page. I hope to replace the .png equivalent with the .svg file.

Adding Wikidata information after using Upload Wizard

I have been uploading pictures using Upload Wizard. When applicable, I add Wikidata information using Upload Wizard. Sometimes I want to do so after finishing the uploading process, but I don't know how. Could someone advise? Jonashtand (talk) 07:38, 2 September 2023 (UTC)

I want to upload a picture .png and include in my article in Gujarati wikipedia

I am translating various articles from English Wiki to Gujarati Wiki. While translating the article PSLV-C2, I was referring to a brochure of PSLV-C2 made publicly available by ISRO on their cite. The original article also refers to the same brochure, but I want to include an informative picture of stages of the rocket. The picture is available in the said brochure. May I upload it? If yes, what are the details I should mention about the source and how. Please guide. Dinesh (talk) 19:31, 1 September 2023 (UTC)

@Dineshjk: the answer is almost certainly "no." Is there any reason to think that the picture in question is either free-licensed or in the public domain? You certainly haven't stated any reason to think so. - Jmabel ! talk 20:58, 1 September 2023 (UTC)
@Jmabel Thanks for your guidance. This is the first instance that I like to upload an image. Wikimedia has an image from another brochure of the ISRO. You may find it at File:LVM3 M3, OneWeb India-2 campaign Brochure 03.png So, I thought that with proper credits, it might be uploaded. But I was not at all clear about that. Thanks once again. Dinesh (talk) 21:37, 1 September 2023 (UTC)
@Dineshjk: well, maybe it will be OK. You didn't provide any links, and I didn't recognize the acromyms "PSLV-C2" or "ISRO". It looks like {{GODL-India}} may cover this. The particular example you now link is something yet to be reviewed, and I personally have never dealt with Indian Government content, so I can't personally give you any strong assurances, but it is likely that the license there is valid and that you could use that file as a model of how to do this.
Could anyone with more experience with Indian government documents please weigh in? - Jmabel ! talk 21:55, 1 September 2023 (UTC)
@Jmabel Thanks for your reply. I want to upload an image from this pdf file. As one can see the file is hosted on Indian Space Research Organization website for the purpose of public education. But there is no information on the license on the site. Dinesh (talk) 10:32, 2 September 2023 (UTC)
@Dineshjk: I do note that https://www.isro.gov.in/ has a copyright symbol and says "All rights reserved", which would suggest that the material there is not in the public domain. But, again, I'm no expert here. You might take this question (with the relevant links this time) to Commons:Village pump/Copyright where maybe you will find an expert on Indian copyright law. When you do that, mention that you already posted here. - Jmabel ! talk 15:39, 2 September 2023 (UTC)

Permission to use your image

Good day, This is Gladys from Mangaldan, Pangasinan. Im writing you to request a permission to use your image (Mangaldan Municipal Building) for I wwill use it as a background image on my Logo? 175.176.3.149 05:37, 3 September 2023 (UTC)

Any image here can be used without permission. There are some other requirements for most files, like attribution, but none require consent to use. Have at them. —Justin (koavf)TCM 06:08, 3 September 2023 (UTC)
I think a preferable rephrasing of this would be that due to the license types used on Commons, permission is already granted to use content, including images. Permission is indeed necessary to use copyrighted content, but the uploaders have properly licensed that content and thus given express permission to everyone in the world, subject to conditions, such as attribution, of course. And it is true that Public Domain files such as File:FvfMangaldan,Pangasinan9587 31.JPG are free to use without permission, because literally there is no copyright holder even to grant permission in the first place. This is a purely technical question and I have no idea what justifies this mistrust. I want to replace comparatively small jpg files from the 2000s with larger files with better noise control that I created from the old RAW files. Thanks, --2A02:8109:8340:1398:10DA:38B3:6C66:6062 20:30, 3 September 2023 (UTC)
The mistrust is that you are asking a question about something that can only be done while logged in, but are not logged in while you are asking. The first three reasons I can think of for doing such a thing all involve some sort of deliberate effort to hide your identity. What you say you want to do is entirely commendable, so why not log in? - Jmabel ! talk 00:10, 4 September 2023 (UTC)

Regarding photo for Enya's page

There have been a lot of alterations made to the Wikipedia page for Enya, in particular some dispute or uncertainty regarding which profile image is suitable/available. [1]

I uploaded 2 currently deleted files that I thought would be most suitable and recent enough File:Enya's Christmas Day message, 2019.png and last year File:Enya 2022.jpg and there have been other uploads since, but those may have also been deleted.

Contrary to popular belief, Enya is not a recluse; she has been photographed publicly multiple times since the release and promotional tour of her 2015 studio album. Leaving the page without a clear image may be misleading (e.g. new readers may think that Enya is a band or music project) and adding a recent, front-facing image would be most helpful. It is likely that this year or the next Enya will release a new album, perhaps that may resolve this issue, but for the time being, it would be valuable to have a clear, recent image.

Would it be possible to recover one of the deleted images, and be able to attribute these accordingly as cropped from the original sources? Topazrochelle9 (talk) 22:08, 3 September 2023 (UTC)

  • Both of those images were deleted because they were copyright violations. Commons is for free licensed media only. File:Παναγία της Άσσιας.jpg.

Hi,

This file File:Παναγία της Άσσιας.jpg has been deleted as a Copyright violation: http://www.polignosi.com/cgibin/hweb?-A=37532&-V=limmata. I have polignosi.com consent to upload with attribution, but i am not sure how to do it. Do you mind pointing me to the right direction please? Should polignosi.com sent an email to a wikimedia email what are the necessary steps to get around this issue?

Thank you very much 23x2 (talk) 03:44, 4 September 2023 (UTC)

@23x2: "Consent" has to come in the form of granting a specific license that is compatible with COM:L. {{CC-BY-SA-4.0}}, which you indicated, would be fine if it comes from the copyright holder.
The simplest way for them to grant the relevant permission would be for them to indicate the license at http://www.polignosi.com/cgibin/hweb?-A=37532&-V=limmata. Currently that page says "All rights reserved." We could then restore the image, cite that as the source, a nd attribute the image correctly.
If for some reason they don't want to do that, it is more complicated, but COM:VRT explains how the owner of rights to a photo can communicate that to the Volunteer Response Team who handle confidential email correspondence. This process works, but it usually involves exchange of a few emails (which have to come from the copyright-holder, not from you) and there is a bit of backlog, so if they can just edit the page on their site to indicate the license and the desired credit, that is a lot quicker and easier. - Jmabel ! talk 05:36, 4 September 2023 (UTC)

Dorothea Lange - White Angel Breadline

I am assuming this image is somewhere on the Commons. I cannot find it, but hesitate to upload this public domain iconic image. Can anyone point me to the image on the commons? Thanks! WomenArtistUpdates (talk) 16:46, 4 September 2023 (UTC)

Wait, wait...looking at the dates again, I think it pre-dates her employment with the WPA, so it would not be PD. Sorry. Nevermind. --WomenArtistUpdates (talk) 20:25, 4 September 2023 (UTC)
@WomenArtistUpdates, I am not sure that I follow. The photograph was taken in 1933. According to Commons:Copyright rules by territory/Canada#General rules, all photos taken before 1949 are in the public domain. It seems unequivocal in this case. Perhaps @Richard Arthur Norton (1958- ) has more nuance to offer us. Elizium23 (talk) 05:54, 5 September 2023 (UTC)
@Elizium23: This photo is from the United States. It has nothing to do with Canada, other than this copy being in a Canadian gallery. -- Asclepias (talk) 15:17, 5 September 2023 (UTC)
Alright then, it's a bit more involved: Commons:Copyright rules by territory/United States#General rules apply instead. @WomenArtistUpdates, you will need to figure out whether the copyright status was renewed or not. If not renewed, then the image will be PD. Elizium23 (talk) 15:22, 5 September 2023 (UTC)
Elizium23 and Asclepias Thank you for checking this out. So much of Lange's work is in PD because was created for various sub-agencies of the New Deal (WPA) during the American Great Depression. All 2d WPA work is in PD. But as I later saw, the image wasn't produced for the government. The image is such an important piece that surely it would have been uploaded by now if not protected by copyright. I just assumed I could not find the photo among all her work on the Commons. Really, I don't think there is any possibility the owners failed to renew. Thanks again for check for me. Best, --WomenArtistUpdates (talk) 17:15, 5 September 2023 (UTC)

May I upload a picture that I took of my husband in non-public place?

May I upload a picture that I took of my husband in non-public place? There is a biography of him in Wikipedia and I have his permission to use the photo. How does he convey his permission?

Thanks, Sequinn55 Sequinn55 (talk) 19:53, 4 September 2023 (UTC)

@Sequinn55, while you are welcome to upload and license such a photo on Commons, you are probably not welcome to unilaterally add the image to a Wikipedia biography. Many of them, such as the English Wikipedia, have policies against a Conflict of Interest; while you are not a paid editor, you definitely have a COI in regards to your husband's article, so what you need to do is establish consensus to add the image first, then use an edit request on the talk page, to request that a disinterested editor makes the edit according to the consensus that has been achieved. Thank you. Elizium23 (talk) 05:48, 5 September 2023 (UTC)
  • I disagree about a family member adding a photo, we encourage that, not discourage that. Adding an image is different than adding text, that may be biased. Also add more than one at Commons so we can choose the best for Wikipedia. --RAN (talk) 15:10, 5 September 2023 (UTC)
@Richard Arthur Norton (1958- ), I don't know who "we" is, but enwiki definitely includes family members in the COI guidelines. Sequinn55 will be required to disclose her connection to the article subject. I don't care if it's an image, a map, or an emoji, her intent to edit the article falls under the Conflict Of Interest regardless of media type. Elizium23 (talk) 15:18, 5 September 2023 (UTC)
    • en:WP:COI does require disclosure (so Sequinn55, make sure you do that on the talk page of the relevant article) but there should be no problem with adding a photo. To quote en:WP:COI: Editors with a COI are encouraged to upload high-quality media files that are appropriately licensed for Wikipedia and that improve our coverage of a subject. For more information, follow the instructions at Commons. In some cases, the addition of media files to an article may be an uncontroversial edit that editors with a COI can make directly, but editors should exercise discretion and rely on talk pages when images may be controversial or promotional. If the addition of an image is challenged by another editor, it is controversial. - Jmabel ! talk 18:23, 5 September 2023 (UTC)

Images from Twitter/Social Media

Are images posted by Police Departments or other Government Organizations on Twitter/X automatically considered Free Use? They're not under any CC. MateoFrayo (talk) 15:51, 6 September 2023 (UTC)

No, it wouldn't automatically be considered fair use or fair dealing, but here on Wikimedia Commons, we don't accept fair use files. Do you have a specific government entity in mind, I could answer questions if a particular government releases their works to the public domain. Abzeronow (talk) 16:04, 6 September 2023 (UTC)
(just sending @MateoFrayo a ping so they see this :) ) —‍Mdaniels5757 (talk • contribs) 16:27, 6 September 2023 (UTC)
I'm working on a draft for 'Raymond Spencer', but the majority of the images posted about the incident have been cited from the District of Colombia's Police Department's Twitter.
Current images of Raymond Spencer on Wikipedia Commons are (for some reason) under an Environmental Protection Agency copyright tag. I have not been able to find a reason why either.
I suppose since all of these images are technically works of the U.S. federal government, all of them would be in the public domain.
(Also—Mdaniels5757, thank you for the ping!) MateoFrayo (talk) 16:06, 7 September 2023 (UTC)
Unfortunately I don't think we can accept an upload from DC's Police Department Twitter. DC.gov does license under CC-BY-3.0 https://dc.gov/node/900572 and notes this "Pursuant to federal law, federal government-produced materials appearing on this site or elsewhere are not copyright protected. The United States Government may receive and hold copyrights transferred to it by assignment, bequest, or otherwise. This does not apply to District or state produced material." I don't think we can consider something from the District's twitter to be licensed CC unless explicitly stated. Abzeronow (talk) 16:58, 7 September 2023 (UTC)
Oh KK, I think I understand. However, there's a note under the 3.0 License tag on the website that states: "Except for third party content that is copyright protected or for content otherwise noted, content on this site is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution 3.0 License." Would this mean that we'll be able to use the images since it doesn't explicitly state that we can't?
Also, I'm not super sure if the DC Police Department Twitter is considered 'part of the site', although it would make reasonable sense if this policy applies to it. - MateoFrayo (talk) 17:26, 7 September 2023 (UTC)
@MateoFrayo @Abzeronow Notwithstanding DC's claims, DC works are federal works, and fall under PD-USGov. See Compendium § 313.6(C)(1) (stating 17 USC § 105 "includes works prepared by an officer or employee of the government of the District of Columbia...") —‍Mdaniels5757 (talk • contribs) 20:34, 7 September 2023 (UTC)
Thanks, Mdaniels5757. I guess I learned something new. A Twitter post of a federal work would be public domain, so the photograph would be in the clear. Abzeronow (talk) 20:38, 7 September 2023 (UTC)

Timed text is unavailable for Levantine

In the "select-language" dropdown for timed text (captions), Levantine Arabic (apc) is not available. So I initially added my closed captions to the Arabic (ar) slot, but later moved the page to the Levantine slot by changing the language code to 'apc', the language code of Levantine. And it didn't move it; it just duplicated it, but the Levantine captions are still not showing in the video player, only the Arabic ones are.

So, is there a way to change the captions to be properly displayed as Levantine Arabic, not Arabic? And if I have to request that Levantine Arabic gets properly supported, where can I do that? FunLater (talk) 19:10, 6 September 2023 (UTC)

Own work

I swear, half my contributions to commons are asking inane questions at the help desk... What should I do when I come across a file – File:TheVoice.png to be precise – that claims to be "Own Work" and distributed under a free license but is painfully clearly not that. I find it extremely unlikely that the copyright holder to the logo of this TV show chose to release it under CC-BY-SA. Especially when that same user claims to be the copyright holder for File:Xfactorhun.jpg, releasing it once again under CC. Come on. Now, I've fished around on tineye and found nothing for that first file (I've found I bit for the second; I hope to get that one speedydeleted). Nevertheless, common sense prevails. Copyvio with a link to [2]. -- Asclepias (talk) 22:08, 6 September 2023 (UTC)
@Edward-Woodrow: You'll find that this kind of thing is quite common on Commons (no pun intended). Mostly, it's people uploading stuff in good faith that they want to use on some local Wikipedia page. They usually mean no real harm and just aren't very familiar with things like COM:L, COM:Own work or COM:NETCOPYVIO. Many of these users just wrongly assume that content posted online is there for anyone to freely use. So, the best thing to do in such cases is, in my opinion, to either tag the file for speedy deletion or start a COM:DR about it. If you notice that the same user has been repeatedly warned about such things or pretty much has had everything they've uploaded deleted for questionable licensing or claims of "own work", you could ask an administrator to get involved per COM:ANU in addition to tagging the file for deletion. -- Marchjuly (talk) 01:53, 7 September 2023 (UTC)
  • If it is common, something is seriously broken here. I'm guessing because so many places online have "terms of service" with long and sometimes near unintelligible text people often click on without reading, some people assume Commons is similar. Whatever the reason, I think we need something clearer for new users. I'd like to think that can be done; otherwise perhaps having new users first uploads subject to review before being made public. Really, we shouldn't be a place where the first action newbies make is to commit copyright fraud. -- Infrogmation of New Orleans (talk) 15:59, 7 September 2023 (UTC)
@Infrogmation: it's the old "everything louder than everything else" problem (or, in this case, "everything before everything else"). There is so much people need to learn in order to do things right, and most people haven't got clue one about copyright law. We really just have to let people learn from mistakes, which means we are constantly going to have new users doing a lot wrong at first, including uploading copyvios. We are constantly going to get "I found it on the Internet so of course it is in the public domain because anyone can see it," "It's from before I was born so its copyright must have expired," "They'd want the publicity, so I'm sure they don't care about copyright," "It's from a government so it must be public domain," etc. Nothing we could write will prevent that. - Jmabel ! talk 21:12, 7 September 2023 (UTC)

New Page, New User

I am a fan of a band. I saw that they have no Wiki Page. So, I contacted them and said I want to make a wiki page for them. They are cool with it. They sent me some band photos, but when I try to upload them, the wiki rejects for copyright questions I think. Can you help me to get the pictures up? I might need to be verified? How do I do that? I saw a page but did not understand. Mistermiek (talk) 05:01, 1 September 2023 (UTC)

@Mistermiek: There are a few things going on here. Please be aware that Wikipedia -- actually, each Wikipedia in a different language -- and Commons are separate projects (although under the umbrella of one foundation) and each makes its own rules. I'm guessing that by "a wiki page" you mean something on the English-language Wikipedia (en-wiki). You might want to look at their policy on conflicts of interest to make sure you don't get in any trouble on that account, and also at the "notability" policies related to music to make sure that the band in question are up to en-wiki's required level of notability, so that you don't waste effort on an article that will just get deleted.
Back to here on Commons. When you say "the wiki rejects" it's hard to know what tool you were using, but I'm guessing that it was a cross-wiki upload from en-wiki. And, if so, I'm glad that brought you here, because there are some copyright issues you are going to need to sort out. Please bear with me, because you'd probably rather go through the right hoops and have your content kept than take shortcuts and have it sit here for only a few days before being deleted.
  • Commons is super-strict about copyright and licensing, and pretty much any photos of a present-day band are copyrighted, because every significant country in the world now considers copyright to exist from the moment the photo is taken. (The U.S. was one of the last on board with this, at then beginning of March 1989.) It is possible for a copyright to be transferred, but usually that involves an explicit contract to do so, so most likely the band do not own the copyrights of existing photos of the band, and therefore cannot give a license to use them.
  • For copyrighted photos, Commons requires a license that allows (1) reuse by anyone, including commercial reuse and (2) the creation of derivative works (e.g. cropped versions, re-colorized versions, etc.) It is OK to require a photo credit (e.g. "Photo by FOO"). We normally recommend the {{CC-BY-SA-4.0}} license. This license has to be granted by the copyright-holder typically the photographer. The band will probably be able to put you in touch with the photographers in question. If you look at COM:VRT you'll see an explanation of how they -- not anyone else -- can send an email to grant that license. Do make sure you read that carefully, and don't go off half-cocked. Also, be aware that such licenses are irrevocable.
    • If the photographer has a web presence that is clearly their own (e.g. a web site for their photography business) this can be slightly short-circuited by them posting the photo to their own web site and indicating the license there. Then you can cite the relevant URL as a source, and can upload on that basis. Saves a bunch of emailing.
  • It may be simpler if possible for you to take pictures of the band yourself, and upload those as your own work with the same required licensing.
  • As for the technical issue of uploading: if you use Special:UploadWizard here on Commons, you'll probably get around whatever was the issue with the cross-wiki upload. But please make sure you have the licensing issue in hand first.
I hope that's helpful. And I'm sorry this is so complicated, but making someone else's photo broadly available for reuse is not a trivial thing. Please feel free to follow up here if you have further questions.
Jmabel ! talk 06:02, 1 September 2023 (UTC)
Thank you for the reply. It is very helpful. Mistermiek (talk) 17:48, 1 September 2023 (UTC)
@Mistermiek: Hi, and welcome. I am sorry to inform you that you have triggered Special:AbuseFilter/153 by trying to cross-wiki upload smaller (<50,000 bytes or <2,000,000 pixels) jpg photos as a new user, and another filter. Each jpg photo you tried to upload is smaller, and you indicated it's your own work. Usually when someone uploads smaller photos, they are copyright violations taken from the web. If you took the photos yourself, please upload the full-size originals of them per COM:HR, including EXIF metadata. If you did not take the photos, please see Commons:Licensing for why we can't accept them, and have the photographer(s) license them on their official websites or social media or send the photos and permissions via VRT with carbon copies to you. If you can't get a compliant license, the photos may still be uploaded to English Wikipedia in compliance with en:WP:F because we don't allow Fair Use here. If you use our Upload Wizard instead, you should be able to avoid filter 153.   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 09:21, 8 September 2023 (UTC)

Trying to ascertain source+license for a potentially usable file

I've identified a vandalism account Micheal P Richson (talk · contribs); the username is a perversion of Mike Pompeo's full name; their userpage is clearly a hoax derived from the wikipedia article about him at that time ([3]) and can likely be speedy deleted as nonsense or vandalism. The account has one upload, File:The love for my great family is great.jpg, for which file information is junk, and licensing is obviously suspect. However, this is actually a photograph of Tony Abbott and his family, so it could conceivably be kept as a useful file, if we're able to identify its source and ascertain a compatible license — perhaps it came from Australian govt? I haven't had any luck using google lens, does anyone have some other ideas or does this have to be sent for deletion? 2406:3003:2077:1E60:8045:33D5:E53F:DC92 20:55, 6 September 2023 (UTC)

It looks like something that would be posted to a personal account of a family member. Unlikely to be licensed. -- Asclepias (talk) 21:36, 6 September 2023 (UTC)
Didn't find the exact picture, but got a search hit that's definitely from the same photoshoot. That picture was reposted to a forum in Sep 2013; its URL suggests original publication by Mamamia in Nov 2012. This was when Abbott was Leader of the Opposition, so probably comes from a publicity shoot for that site, some other media outlet, or via Liberal Party PR apparatus. Photo predates Abbott's time as PM, hence is not likely to have been obtained via some Australian govt website that makes content available under a CC license. 2406:3003:2077:1E60:E4DF:F525:2308:C92A 07:52, 8 September 2023 (UTC)

Handling a group of photos from a shoot or related shoots

Hi Commons persons, I have a few sets of photos either previously uploaded (see e.g. https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Gallopers-Tasmania-2013-01.jpg, with related files listed in the "description") or ready to upload, typically from a shoot or related shoots, that I would like to associate together in small "collections" of some sort if that is possible - in other words, not all "my" photos (group by uploader) but just a subset with a particular theme and date or dates. Probably not a "gallery" which (at least in Wikipedia) relates to any images of a subject taken by potentially random persons at random times; maybe a "photo essay" is close, but I can only find 2 examples where this terminology has been formally used, see https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Photo-essays , so perhaps it is not the recommended method - any guidance welcome (perhaps I am missing something obvious as well). Regards Tony Rees Tony 1212 (talk) 22:57, 7 September 2023 (UTC)

@Tony 1212:
  1. You can probably do something on a subpage of your own user space.
  2. You can do a hidden category, if the grouping is mainly for your own sake in finding the materials.
  3. You can also do a "gallery" within the description like I did here, rather than just list the files.
By the way, that really is way to much text in your current description. It reads like an essay. If you want to do that at that length, I really suggest you start a blog of your own or something of that sort rather than embed it as the description of a photo here.
Do keep in mind: in a wiki like this, you are not really supposed to take "ownership" of a page. Of course the photo itself is your own, and you control how you get credit for it, and we severely limit overwrites of the image against your wishes (COM:OVERWRITE), but the description is really not supposed to be one person's subjective take. - Jmabel ! talk 00:33, 8 September 2023 (UTC)
Thanks for the response, I will address the issue with the "mini essay" on the Gallopers topic separately. Regarding the purpose of my request, basically I would like something i.e. a particular set of images that can then be addressed as an "external link" in a Wikipedia article, in other words more than just for personal use. That is why I was thinking of "photo essay" or similar, but wondering why nobody seems to be using it... Tony 1212 (talk) 01:00, 8 September 2023 (UTC)
If it is intended as a link for a Wikipedia article, then it should probably be done as a gallery page. But you can't expect to keep single-handed control over a gallery page. That goes against Commons:Ownership of pages and files, which I linked in my prior answer. - Jmabel ! talk 03:07, 8 September 2023 (UTC)
Hi @Jmabel... Maybe - just maybe - I could achieve what I want with some fine scale categorization... For example, I recently uploaded the file https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Railway_station_Lismore_(1).jpg, along with 2 others i.e. (2) and (3), for use on a Wikipedia page, however I have another 5+ to upload that will not currently be included in the Wikipedia article, but are of some potential historic significance since they document the appearance of the station (basically it is in disrepair) at time of photographing.
So, I could add these to a pre-existing https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Lismore_railway_station (not yet done) and provide an external link to them via that prefix.
The only issue then being, that ideally, I would like to differentiate the different "phases of use" / condition of this station, namely, in use (1894-2004); post-use but pre- flood damage (2004-2022); and in disrepair (2022-?), so that I could provide a link to just one of these sets (subsets) as needed. I am guessing that this could be done as subcategories, and would also permit others to add images to these categories in the future, which would actually be fine for my intended use scenario as well. So could this work?
One complication is that "Category:Lismore_railway_station" actually requires disambiguation, since although the category has been set up (by someone) for the Australian instance, there is an Irish instance as well, e.g. see https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:The_former_Lismore_Railway_Station_%28geograph_5434764%29.jpg . Different issue, to address as well, I am guessing.
OK, returning to the "Gallopers" example previously given... just for information, "Gallopers" are the UK variant of the U.S. "carousel" fairground ride, in which the horses go clockwise (I think it is anticlockwse in the U.S.A.)
So far as I can see, there is currently on Commons:
To date I added the second of these to my "Gallopers" photos, however they group (now or potentially) with other instances of particular carousels.
Then we have https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Carousels_by_manufacturer (subcategory of Carousels)
There is no subcategory for this particular make (Howcrofts) but there is one for e.g. "F. Savage carousels and gallopers‎" so I guess I could create an equivalent.
Then for this particular carousel, I could use its index number in the UK fairground archive which is g33, which allows the same ride to be traced through different locations / countries (!) and periods of ownership. So in theory at least, all photos of this ride could be grouped under Carousels > Carousels_by_manufacturer > Howcrofts carousels and gallopers > g33 , which would perform the intended purpose (a way to retrieve any past, present and future photos of this ride).
So would the above suggestions work, or is it getting into over categorization?
Thanks again for your input, and for reading this far, if you have indeed done so... Just so as you know, I should like whatever I do to be persistent / public / follow generic principles (and also be updateable by others as appropriate), not just be part of my own user space. Regards Tony Tony 1212 (talk) 03:19, 8 September 2023 (UTC)
There is a bit more there than I wish to wade through but, yes, you could distinguish three different subcategories for three different periods in which the carousel would have looked significantly different. - Jmabel ! talk 04:56, 8 September 2023 (UTC)
And it looks like Category:Steam Carousel (singular) is just a rather poorly-named category for one particular steam carousel. - Jmabel ! talk 04:57, 8 September 2023 (UTC)
OK, I think I am on the way: I have created https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Lismore_railway_station_with_2022_flood_damage as a subcategory of "Category:Lismore_railway_station" and used it to tag my first 3 images as uploaded, more to be done directly. That should provide exactly what I need, in the form of an externally useable link for the relevant Wikipedia article. I will do something similar with the Gallopers situation, and see how far I get...
(update: now done, also reduced the "mini essay" on the Gallopers to a single paragraph - hope this is better now: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Gallopers-Tasmania-2013-01.jpg )
Regarding "Category:Steam carousel" probably being an error (not mine), i.e. redundant cf. "Category:Steam carousels", is that something I can attempt to fix or do I just report it to an admin? Tony 1212 (talk) 05:24, 8 September 2023 (UTC)
@Tony 1212: It's not redundant, just poorly named. It's a category for a particular steam carousel, and it should have a name that makes it clearer which one. I'll deal with it. (Also with the incorrect capitalization of Category:Steam_Carousels, clearly not a proper noun.) - Jmabel ! talk 14:24, 8 September 2023 (UTC)

{ping|Vicky pareek 29}} Assuming you are talking about images on Commons, all images here can in principle be used in a YouTube video. However, there is a wide variety of public domain images and variously licensed images on this site. The public domain images should be no problem at all; for the licensed images, you must conform to the terms of the license offered on the file page of the relevant image or, if multiple licenses are offered, at least one license offered on the file page of the relevant image. So you have to go through to the file page for each image and work out the situation for that image. See Commons:Reusing content outside Wikimedia. - Jmabel ! talk 16:13, 9 September 2023 (UTC)

@Jmabel: I am thinking about translating infographics which contain English text. Here are two examples that I have uploaded for Wikipedia articles:

The Smithsonian Magazine is the official magazine of the Smithsonian, part of the US federal government. Access list of images I've opened at Commons during the last few hours

I've spent the entire night browsing Commons for photos of specific lamp post shapes and designs, and by the end, I may have had close to a three-digit amount of tabs open, and just when I wanted to save the photos to my HDD in order to sift and sort through them, Firefox crashed. Of course, I'd been lucky enough that I'd done all of this in a private window, so I can't recover it from my Firefox history and not even from my cached DNS.

So, I'm asking, is there a way for some mod, admin, or other tech person at Wikipedia (or Wikimedia) to give me the list of URL requests by my IP (found in my signature below) at Commons within c. the last 6 hours? They should all point to this level, not the actual JPGs. 2003:DA:CF39:B803:8420:2CCC:8EC6:5B2 00:10, 10 September 2023 (UTC)

How to access my translated svg image?

Hello. I've translated the labels on the French image File:Marché noir - importance.svg to English using the svg translate tool, and I know it's saved, because I see it in the history, and also if I set the "render" drop down to English (en), even though the image remains in French, if I click it, it goes here which has the English labels I added. But how do I access that version of it at Wikipedia? I would like en:Black market in wartime France#Proportion of production to show the English version of the chart, not the French one. Background for this is this request. Thanks, Mathglot (talk) 07:21, 10 September 2023 (UTC)

@Mathglot: At 120x72px resolution as on that page with my custom view (en:Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-rendering/Files/Thumbnail size:120px as an instance of my global preference), the words are illegible anyway. At 220x132px standard resolution, they are not very legible.   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 07:34, 10 September 2023 (UTC)
But the wrong image is being displayed now in this case, even though in other translated svg's, the right one is displayed; such as here, for example. (subscribed) (Edit conflict) Mathglot (talk) 07:42, 10 September 2023 (UTC)

Question about questions

Does question put here gets answered each time? If yes then within what time a question gets answered at an average? Does a questioner is notified elsewheres when question is attended or rejected for a valid reason? What is the alternative way to ask the same question when it seems to be answered or delayed ? Can the questioner be able to find the reason of not getting reply if a tolerable number of attempts to ask make the questioner feel like giving up on another try ? Does a questioner is given a least possible tenure to talk and act for improvement, correction or apologizy on which question is made or on the question itself? Does the questioner get a prior notice before being restricted or prohibited by asking questions here ? Is there any solution to ask or talk to any other users in their talk or help page individually or separately when the questioner is made disabled to contact on this common or group forum of talk ? I asked many questions in one attempt because my success of posting them and getting them answered wasn't upto remark to be called as satisfactory treat with the faith offered or asked by possible answeres to the questioner. Is it okay if someone put a non relevant or off topic question than of ongoing or trendy ones like I did here ? 2409:4081:AD10:115F:0:0:CC4A:C08 16:20, 10 September 2023 (UTC)

  • That's a lot of questions.
  • We usually try to answer every reasonable question that is asked, but we are volunteers, and at some point if someone asks too many questions it's time to get on with life. Also, really off-topic questions are often just deleted or given a cursory answer.
  • If you didn't get an answer here on the help desk, the best thing to do is to hit the same section and add "It's been X days and no one has answered this," so people have it called to their attention on their watchlists. Please don't forum-shop to other pages.
  • Some people should give up. There's a reason people here get blocked.
  • These were moderately on-topic questions, so I did my best to give you a decent answer. But please don't stray farther off-topic. - Jmabel ! talk 16:35, 10 September 2023 (UTC)

Retouching and Copyright

I am writing an article about a famous cosplay facility and would like to reprint photos on WIKIMEDIA about photos published on Twitter with the permission of both the photographer and the photographed cosplayer via email.

In my country, photographers rarely publish their photos as is, and cosplayers usually do major retouching with Photoshop or other software before they are published.

So my question is, how is retouching handled copyright-wise in WIKIMEDIA? Who is the copyright holder of the photos retouched by cosplayers? Or is it a joint copyright holder? 狄の用務員 (talk) 14:14, 10 September 2023 (UTC)

  • @狄の用務員: Retouching is fine, as long as you tag it with {{Retouched}} and indicate roughly what has been retouched.
  • Permission has to come from the photographer, who is the copyright-owner. If there is a web site or page clearly under the control of the photographer, they can indicate the permission there, but it sounds like here they have already been published on someone else's social media which makes clarity difficult. I recommend that the photographer go through the process outlined at COM:VRT (this can all be handled in Japanese if that's easier). The email must come directly from the rights-holder, you cannot forward it, though of course they can just forward an existing thread from their email address. In particular, we need the grant of a specific license, not a vague "sure, you can use it." - Jmabel ! talk 16:30, 10 September 2023 (UTC)
  • Some cosplay raises copyright issues, in terms of the original character being cosplayed. Since you are not specific about what was represented, I can only say that in general. - Jmabel ! talk 16:30, 10 September 2023 (UTC)
I understood that retouching does not affect copyright and that the copyright of the photo belongs to the photographer. I also understand that the handling of cosplay photos is a general matter.I will follow your recommendation and use COM:VRT. Thank you. 狄の用務員 (talk) 12:17, 11 September 2023 (UTC)

Whether or not images were ever published in the U.S is extremely hard to verify.

I'd like to add some photos kept by the Kalk Bay Historical association to the commons, but one of the upload requirements for an image to have entered the public domain is that it must have been published in the U.S before 1928. The photographers are definitely dead, and its definitely been more than 70 years (many were taken in the 1850s), but I have absolutely no way to verify when (if ever) the photos were published in the U.S. Jemhop (talk) 09:28, 11 September 2023 (UTC)

@Jemhop: We usually assume that old pictures were published at the time of creation, unless there is information saying otherwise. Old unpublished pictures are also usually in the public domain, as per {{PD-US-unpublished}}. Yann (talk) 09:40, 11 September 2023 (UTC)
@Jemhop: An image does not need to have been published in the US before 1928. The criterion is that if an image was published before 1928 anywhere, it is in the public domain in the U.S. Also, that is only one of the possible ways that can make an image public domain in the US. There are many other ways to meet the Wikimedia upload requirement that a work must be in the public domain in the U.S. For example, if a photo was taken before 1973 and its first publication occurred in South Africa before 1989, it might be in the public domain in the U.S. So, what you can try to determine is if the photos were published somewhere and, if so, by whom, when and where. Not necessarily in the U.S. The origin of the photos, how the historical association obtained them, the history of the collection, the type of photos, can provide indications. -- Asclepias (talk) 12:50, 11 September 2023 (UTC)
Also, while there is at least one painful exception, almost anything over 120 years old is OK. The only exception I can think of:due to a quirk in U.S. copyright law, works created before 1978 and first published (with notice) 1978 through 2002 are all protected in the U.S. at least until 31 December 2047. - Jmabel ! talk 19:26, 11 September 2023 (UTC)

Image search question

http://ucip.utah.gov/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/Case-Law-Update-2.pdf credits an image to me, and (assuming it's mine) credits it appropriately, but I have no idea what photo they used! I'm guessing it is a tight-crop detail of a picture I took that was mainly of something else (it shows two people circulating a petition). It's in a PDF; does anyone have any idea how I might to a reverse image search to try to work out what photo of mine on Commons they were using? - Jmabel ! talk 22:13, 11 September 2023 (UTC)

It is unlikely, but possible that the EXIF are still in the image. Otherwise you can try haveibeentrained.com on the image. C.Suthorn (@Life_is@no-pony.farm - p7.ee/p) (talk) 23:58, 11 September 2023 (UTC)

Adding images & releasing copyright for specific images

I had added an image, File:AMT Lightning.jpg, to AMT Lightning pistol on 30 August 2023.

It was subsequently taken down & deleted from Commons on 6 September 2023.

I thought I'd outlined the permission properly in Addition of File:AMT Lightning.jpg, since we at GunBroker.com own the copyright and want to allow its use, but perhaps I missed something or don't understand the process? (I'm a disclosed paid contributor.)

The message on my User_talk:LoVeloDogs indicates it was removed because it was a violation from https://www.gunbroker.com/item/999306970, but we hold the copyright for those images.

The Category:Wikipedia requested images of firearms project would benefit from our images, and we would like to grant permissions for specific uploads to those pages.

Any help that anyone can offer would be greatly appreciated, thank you! LoVeloDogs (talk) 21:59, 11 September 2023 (UTC)

An administrator deleted my photo based on false assumptions

Hello Wiki friends,

My name is Amin. Yesterday I received a message from a Wiki administrator, claiming that I had uploaded a photo to Wikipedia “primarily for the purpose of insulting, demeaning, or defaming a person..”.. The administrator deleted the photo without giving me a opportunity to discuss it.

‘’’The administrator deleted the photo based on assumptions that were incorrect. I had uploaded that photo with the full permission of my friend, and it was intended to inform, and not to insult or defame anyone. My friend who was in the picture and I both had a laugh about it.’’’ By now you must be curious about the photo. As it has been deleted by the administrator, you can still see a screenshot here, on a tweet that happened to go a bit viral, and my reply-tweet here.

I feel the administrator was wrong to delete the photo without any discussion. I would like to restore it. What would be my next step to do that? I welcome any help.

And if the administrator was right to delete it, I could accept that too. But I’d like to understand his arguments better. Because right now I feel they’re based on false assumptions and accusations. Small things like this slowly suck the fun out of reading and editing Wikipedia.

Thanks, Amin (talk) 15:12, 20 September 2023 (UTC)

@Wutsje: You’re involved here. This seems like a misunderstanding. Perhaps you can explain. ~Anachronist (talk) 15:28, 20 September 2023 (UTC)

Thanks for chiming in. I have appealed the deletion as you suggested here. Amin (talk) 17:19, 20 September 2023 (UTC)
I’d  Support restoration, it looks like the subject is in on the joke, but I could start a DR if Wutsje thinks it would need one. Abzeronow (talk) 16:04, 20 September 2023 (UTC)
Thank you. Indeed the subject is in on the joke. It would not be proper for me to upload it otherwise. Amin (talk) 17:19, 20 September 2023 (UTC)
The description of the file I deleted was: ‘’A child molestor using a urinal’’, which speaks for itself. What I shouldn’t have missed though, is that this so called joke was not added by the uploader. I have therefore restored the file. My apologies. Wutsje 17:50, 20 September 2023 (UTC)
Maybe you should not have allowed the ‘’A child molestor using a urinal’’ part to stay public if you wanted to undelete the image Trade (talk) 21:32, 20 September 2023 (UTC)

Got it all wrong - sorry

This commons file is taken from a full page from The Tatler in 1928: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Tatler_(Society_publication)_-_Captain._A._L._and_Mrs_Middleton_-_Page_34_-_4th_January_1928.jpg

Is this OK - I hope ?

Please let me know - I did a separate file on the "Middleton family" page (Wikipedia) which has only the centre pic as the file.

So sorry

Srbernadette (talk) 02:56, 13 September 2023 (UTC)

I am not coping with this (so sorry) - I am assuming that as the Tatler publication is 1928 that all is OK. I got the whole page from "Find My Past" website as I have shown. I did not mean to state that "it (the photo/file) is licensed under Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike 4.0 International".

Look at the "source" which is another commons page:

https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:The_Tatler,_4_January_1928_(page_34)_(Center_pic)_Captain_Alan_Lomas_Middleton_and_wife.jpg

which is the FULL "Tatler" page form 1928 - which includes the middle pic that I made a separate file for.

Please help and I am truly sorry

115.70.23.77 03:29, 13 September 2023 (UTC)

@Srbernadette: Both of those files are still tagged with a CC-BY-SA-4.0 license and not with any other license tag. Are you saying that the January 4, 1928 edition of the Tatler is in the public domain in the United Kingdom and also in the United States? If so, why? It might be {{PD-UK-unknown}} if we don't know who the photographer or the author of the text is, but in the U.S. works that were published in 1928 are still in copyright until 2024. —CalendulaAsteraceae (talkcontribs) 07:33, 13 September 2023 (UTC)

Getting it all fixed

This new file:

https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Tatler_(Society_publication)_-_Captain._A._L._and_Mrs_Middleton_-_Page_34_-_4th_January_1928.jpg

should be OK now, (please look at the "Source" in the Summary section).

So please remove the red box all about the incorrect licence.

Photos (scans) of old postcard/s not personally held

Hi all, I recently uploaded an image of an old (Australian) postcard (this one: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Lismore_Railway_Station_early_1900s.jpg) on the understanding that being pre-1920, the image in the postcard was out of copyright in the US. Now I plan to do another one or 2. The issue being, I do not have the actual postcards in my possession, just some scans of them uploaded elsewhere (e.g. blogs, facebook, articles by others) and the actual physical instances of the postcards may be identifiable e.g. by unique creases, damage or discolouration, handwriting (which actually I removed for the instance above, for clarity/closer approach to the original), or whatever. So, at least in theory, someone could say, "hey, that's my image, and I did not give you permission to upload it"... just wondering if this has come up before, and whether it is something I should worry about. Response, thoughts appreciated. Tony Rees, Australia Tony 1212 (talk) 06:31, 13 September 2023 (UTC)

Tony 1212: Many people and even organisations, such as museums and libraries, claim copyright over images that are clearly slavish copies of public domain images. This is copyfraud and so long as you are certain of the copyright status then you should be fine using those images. However be aware that both US and country of origin copyright laws apply and also review the URAA restoration date rules. Ww2censor (talk) 10:53, 13 September 2023 (UTC)

Self certification for photographers who do not have an official website or email address

I am planning to ask amateur photographers to provide photos in the near future. This is my first attempt and I am carefully checking the procedure so as not to bother them.

I am planning to use COM:VRT, but I have one question: the description of the source of the email that should be sent to VRT says:" For instance, if you are releasing images shown on a website, your email address should be associated with the website or listed on the contact page of the website."

Many photographers here use Instagram as a portfolio, communicate externally via Twitter, and complete their communication only on social networking sites and do not disclose their email address.

In these cases, how can photographers prove their identity? How do usually deal with this? 狄の用務員 (talk) 12:58, 14 September 2023 (UTC)

I received pictures from photographer JP Swirko ,some portraits of my father. I can freely use them. What do I have tot do ? Erik De Vree (talk) 08:19, 16 September 2023 (UTC)

@Erik De Vree I assume JP Swirko is the copyright holder. That means they have to license the pictures under one of the "ok" licenses here: Commons:Licensing#Well-known_licenses. The can do so by registering a user account themselves, and upload them at Special:UploadWizard. OR they can do so via mail-contact per COM:VRT. Hope this helps. Uploading my own pictures?

I've tried to upload a picture of a county courthouse that I took, that I own, that also appears on my own website, but I got the message that Wiki couldn't validate, or something like that. How does one upload your own picture? I'm quite confused by this. Thank you. WikiSimon4Stand (talk) 02:06, 15 September 2023 (UTC)

Hi WikiSimon4Stand, have you tried the Upload Wizard? I use that one and its pretty easy. Paradise Chronicle (talk) 03:45, 15 September 2023 (UTC)
@WikiSimon4Stand: According to your logs, you triggered the "cross-wiki upload filter" when attempting to upload two files. That means that you probably tried to upload from a website other than Commons. Try uploading directly from Commons. -- Asclepias (talk) 12:58, 15 September 2023 (UTC)
@WikiSimon4Stand: Hi, and welcome. I am sorry to inform you that you have triggered Special:AbuseFilter/153 by trying to cross-wiki upload a smaller (<50,000 bytes or <2,000,000 pixels) jpg photo as a new user. The photo you tried to upload is smaller, and you indicated it's your own work. Usually when someone uploads a smaller photo, it is a copyright violation taken from the web. If you took the photo yourself, please upload the full-size original of it per COM:HR, including EXIF metadata. If you did not take the photo, please see Commons:Licensing for why we can't accept it, and have the photographer post permission on their official website or social media or send the photo and permission via VRT with a carbon copy to you. If you can't get a compliant license, the photo may still be uploaded to English Wikipedia in compliance with en:WP:F because we don't allow Fair Use here. If you use our Upload Wizard instead, you should be able to avoid that filter.   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 00:32, 18 September 2023 (UTC)

things necessary to do before uploading

I have pictures of a monument that I'd like to upload. What legal stuff should I do before uploading? Trueconscience (talk) 09:28, 15 September 2023 (UTC)

Did you try to follow the instructions of the Upload Wizard.Paradise Chronicle (talk) 10:49, 15 September 2023 (UTC)
"A monument" is very vague. If this is something over 120 years old, then probably no special issues. Anything more recent than that, and in some countries the object itself might still have copyright protection. Unless you are more specific, no one can give you solid advice on whether this image would be acceptable for Commons.
Also, your choice of the word "monument" makes me wonder: is this for one of the "Wiki Loves Monuments" competitions? - Jmabel ! talk 18:22, 15 September 2023 (UTC)
Thank you for replying! yes, I wanted to submit for "wiki Loves Monuments". I've followed the steps and submitted a picture. Now, I can see them in the "user uploads" section.
Does that mean I've participated in the competition? What should I do now? Trueconscience (talk) 09:20, 16 September 2023 (UTC)
This is a bit strange: did you submit File:Qutub shahi tomb.jpg through the tool specific to entering the contest? Because just looks like a normal upload, and is not marked as submitted to WLM. You'll want to put {{Wiki Loves Monuments 2023|in}} just above the categories on that file page. You might ask at Commons talk:Wiki Loves Monuments 2023 in India whether there is anything further you need to do. - Jmabel ! talk 16:21, 16 September 2023 (UTC)
Oh yes you're right,Thank you. I did go through the tool but didn't follow all the steps correctly. Now I've submitted other files to the contest. can I put this File:Qutub shahi tomb.jpg now into the contest? after uploading it normally? Also, can I put these images submitted in the contest in stock photography editorial sections? Trueconscience (talk) 19:24, 16 September 2023 (UTC)
You can copy-paste the relevant tags from File:Qutb Shahi Tombs,Echoes of History in Stone.jpg to File:Qutub shahi tomb.jpg. If you go into the mode to exit the wikitext of both in two different browser tabs, it should be pretty clear what needs to be copied. - Jmabel ! talk 21:43, 16 September 2023 (UTC)

Trying to understand some finer details

Hello. I wonder about a case like this image here File:Portupee veltveebel Hugo Siim.jpg. The context is COM:ESTONIA, PD from life + 70 years, the photographer died 1945. All well and good.

But then we come to the next part of File:Portupee_veltveebel_Hugo_Siim.jpg#Licensing, the US parts. Points 1 and 2 seem unproblematic, but then comes 3, "it was in the public domain in its home country (Estonia) on the URAA date (1 January 1996)."

Assuming the PD rules of Estonia was the same in 1996, the photographer had not been dead 70 years by then. So, does this mean that this pic (and pics in the same situation) fails the US part of the PD rules, and should be removed from Commons? I assume the US rules are there because Commons is based in the US and has to follow those laws. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 09:56, 16 September 2023 (UTC)

@Gråbergs Gråa Sång: If the pictures were published in the U.S. within 30 days of their publication in Estonia, then they are OK in the U.S. If not then, yes, URAA comes into the picture, and they won't be in the public domain in the U.S. until 95 years after publication. So anything published (anywhere) before 1928 is good: {{PD-old-auto-expired|1945}}. This picture is from 1927; was it published promptly when created? - Jmabel ! talk 16:38, 16 September 2023 (UTC)
@Jmabel Interesting. IMO, it's extremely unlikely it was published in the U.S. within 30 days of its publication in Estonia. Per source [4], we know it was taken in 1927. But I have no idea of the context. Was it a private "thing", a portrait for Hugo Siim himself or his family, or for military files or a local newspaper? It may not have been published before the Estonia National Archives Photo Information System put it on their website. So, what then? Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 17:26, 16 September 2023 (UTC)
@Gråbergs Gråa Sång: I'm not an expert by any means, but I've read a lot of previous discussions here about what exactly constitutes publication, and I don't think I'm misrepresenting the general consensus when I say that it's probably safe to assume that this particular photo counts as "published" for copyright purposes. In a discussion earlier this year, Carl Lindberg, who is one of the courts of highest appeal for this sort of thing on the Commons, wrote that "when it comes to publication, we do often assume works were published around the time they were created -- most works are made for a reason. Commons policy requires there to be no significant doubt; it does not require that there be no doubt at all or preclude making some assumptions. While it's theoretically possible for a work to have remained unpublished for decades, but then fortuitously published before some cutoff date to create a very long copyright, it's exceedingly unlikely and those usually do not amount to significant doubts. In other words, it's usually safe to assume that a photo was published around the time of its creation unless there are good reasons to assume otherwise. Sometimes there are good reasons -- for example, if this were obviously an unposed family snapshot that had remained in a shoebox or a photo album for decades after its creation, it would make sense to treat it as unpublished. But it's not. It's a posed portrait taken by a professional photographer, and most professional photographers expect to be paid for their work. If he had not sold the photo, and the original negative had remained in his archive without ever leaving his possession, that too would be a reason to treat it as unpublished. But if he gave or sold prints of the photo to members of the general public, or even to just one person without any restriction on further public distribution by that person, then that normally counts as publication.
In this case, it's pretty clear that the photo was indeed distributed to others besides Siim himself, because the one in the Estonian archive appears to be a presentation copy with Siim's signature on the front. Most people who label photos for their own information or as aids to memory write the labels on the back, not the front, because they don't want to mess up the photo itself. The main reason for signing a picture on the front is to give it to someone else as an autographed presentation copy. And if the photographer sold Siim the photos to do whatever he wanted with them, and if Siim was giving out signed copies to others (the explanation that best fits the available evidence), then it satisfies the publication requirement as far as US copyright law is concerned. Since the photo was taken in 1927, it's reasonable to assume the publication took place in 1927 as well. And if that's the case, you don't need to worry about anything else, because as Jmabel says above, if it was published anywhere in the world before 1928, then it is public domain in the US. So in my opinion it's perfectly fine to keep it on the Commons, although the license should be changed to {{PD-old-auto-expired|1945}} as suggested by Jmabel. (Others who know more than I do will no doubt correct me if my reasoning is faulty :) ) Cheers, Choliamb (talk) 19:57, 16 September 2023 (UTC)
The U.S. definition of "published" was pretty tortured in that era, as courts had to come up with a definition. Different U.S. circuits came up with different tests, so the law itself is not uniform, but if copies were given out without restrictions on further publication, that often did qualify. There is always some uncertainty with questions like this, but to me they are usually just theoretical doubts, not something that rises to the "significant doubt" level of COM:PRP. Once copies leave the control of the photographer, most of the time that would result in publication (although different countries can have different definitions of that, really). A private family photo from an archive might be different; that would probably require more attention to the question of publication. In this particular case, the term in Estonia on the URAA date was 50pma, not 70pma, so if the author died in 1945, they became PD in Estonia in 1996, so were PD in Estonia when the URAA took effect. Estonia later extended their terms to 70pma, but that does not change the URAA status. See the Estonia section at Wikipedia:Non-US copyrights. And actually reading a Google translation of that old law, photos may have been 50 years from publication, not 50pma, anyways. So, I think it's also {{PD-1996}}. Carl Lindberg (talk) 20:21, 16 September 2023 (UTC)
@Choliamb@Clindberg, many thanks for your comments. I watched The Paper Chase recently on Youtube, and this discussion strongly reminds me of that tv-series. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 20:58, 16 September 2023 (UTC)
Btw, is there some Commons-gadget where I can enter data like made in Estonia, author dead 1945 etc, and it spits out the appropriate PD-templates? Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 21:12, 16 September 2023 (UTC)
On that last, I don't think there is such gadget; it sounds like a cool idea, but to assemble and organize all the relevant data to make it cover everything would probably take a bare minimum of 6 person-months (and I do mean a bare minimum, wouldn't be surprised if it were multiple person-years), and I bet a lot of cases would still come up as "unclear". This is tricky stuff, with a scary number of edge cases. - Jmabel ! talk 21:49, 16 September 2023 (UTC)
I like the idea though, such a thing could make a lot of discussions (like this one) easier. Builders could start with US, then EU (both not without complexity), then add more as the thing is used and tested. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 06:34, 17 September 2023 (UTC)
For U.S. there is the Hirtle chart but if you look at that you'll easily see how complicated it gets, how many different issues can come into play just for one country, and how many images there are out there where some of the factors that would determine copyright status are themselves difficult to determine. And that's without even getting into the question of what constitutes "publication." - Jmabel ! talk 16:17, 17 September 2023 (UTC)
Maybe we should just ask ChatGPT. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 17:17, 17 September 2023 (UTC)
+1 from me for such a gadget. I have also asked for a licensing gadget a few days ago and was told that what I had in mind could be done with the VisualFilesChange. The description is not that easy to follow, and I haven't tried it yet, but maybe it works for your aims? Paradise Chronicle (talk) 18:33, 17 September 2023 (UTC)
@Paradise Chronicle: VFC is useful to change the license on a relatively large number of photos at once, but will do nothing to tell you what license is desired. It performs the action efficiently, but you have to tell it what action to perform. - Jmabel ! talk 22:10, 17 September 2023 (UTC)

Attributions

I have created a Powerpoint presentation, using a poem I wrote, with images found on Wikimedia Commons. It will be very awkward to credit each image as it appears since it will disturb the flow of the video. Will it be acceptable if I put all attributions at the end, numbering them in order of appearance? AnnaOdds (talk) 17:31, 16 September 2023 (UTC)

  • @AnnaOdds: Yes, that is normally an acceptable way to attribute in a video. A little trickier if your slides may ever stand on their own outside the work, though. Ideally, additionally, you could but just a minimal credit (Image by FOO) in a small subtitle on the respective page of the Powerpoint. That way if the individual slides are separated from the whole work, the credit isn't totally lost. - Jmabel ! talk 21:56, 16 September 2023 (UTC)
Putting the attributions (correct attributions - in the case of a cc-by-sa license name of author, image-file and license and links to them) at the end of the video is a good solution. If you are going to publish the video at YouTube, you can additionally put the attributions (with working links) in the video description at Youtube. The same should be possible with other video platforms (for example Peertube - you can look at my Peertube videos as an example of that) and also if you publish the video at your own website. Putting a (additional) minimal credit on the individual pages of the powerpoint as suggested is not wrong, but as people do not care (or even know) about copyright in practise it may be more Effort, than it is worth. But if you want to make the effort, it may be an idea to add a short url that links to the actual published video, where the full attributions can be found. With "image by FOO" people are likely to thinks it is a sufficient attribution, while in many cass it is not. C.Suthorn (@Life_is@no-pony.farm - p7.ee/p) (talk) 09:08, 17 September 2023 (UTC)

hi, I requested a rename at [5] how long does it usually take to have the request looked at?...thank you--Ozzie10aaaa (talk) 21:31, 16 September 2023 (UTC)

You asked this 11 minutes after making the request, and it's about 40 minutes now. Normally, someone gets to these in a day or so, though there can be a backlog so a few days is not unheard of. I don't see any emergency here, am I missing something? If not, please, in the future: following up minutes after requesting something wastes admin time. You can't upload such a screenshot on Commons, no "non-free" stuff is accepted here. However, WP does accept non-free stuff in some very limited circumstances, and a screenshot of a defunct (?) website in an article about that website would, I think, be acceptable.
Go here [6], pick "Upload a non-free file", then "This is a copyrighted, non-free work, but I believe it is Fair Use." then... Well, I'm not sure. Hope this helps some. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 10:37, 17 September 2023 (UTC)

Upload of a public domain image

Hi Folks!! I'm working an editor who wants to upload an public domain image for the en:Cameron Prize for Therapeutics of the University of Edinburgh article. Scope creep (talk) 16:27, 15 September 2023 (UTC)

@Scope creep: I'm not sure I follow here, on at least two points. (1) We almost never replace or "update" images on Commons. Distinct images belong under distinct filenames. en-wiki can then change which image it uses, but that is not Commons affair. (2) You say the image is public domain and then you say that it belongs to a particular individual. Offhand that makes no sense at all. Can you clarify? - Jmabel ! talk 18:32, 15 September 2023 (UTC)
@Jmabel: I'm looking to upload several images as public domain, helping another editor who is new to wikipedia. These images have been sent to this editor by the people who are on the en:Cameron Prize for Therapeutics of the University of Edinburgh. How would they prove the images were them and they were offering them for public domain. They have agreed to use to the "CC BY-SA 4.0" licence for the images. I think three or four to upload. Scope creep (talk) 06:20, 18 September 2023 (UTC)
@Scope creep: This still doesn't really make sense.
  • If the images are in the public domain, then no one owns rights on them, so no one can offer a license, nor is any license required. Perhaps you are confused about the meaning of "public domain," but I can't guess what you may think it means, so I can't understand your question.
  • "How would they prove the images were them…": we don't usually require any proof that images show the people they claim to show (though of course if they don't then they are pretty useless). The issue is that the only person who can issue a license is the copyright-holder, which is almost always the photographer or their heir (there are edge cases, but not likely to arise here). If the images are previously published, we will need the copyright-holder to go through the process outlined at COM:VRT. - Jmabel ! talk 19:21, 18 September 2023 (UTC)

I am confused. Is Wiki Commons linked to Wikipedia? Because my draft article submitted to Wikimedia has appeared on Wikitia. I now have been asked by Wiki Commons about two illustrations in my draft article for Wikipedia and need to reply. But I do not know how to do so. I own both the pictures asked about and can explain more - but only when I am confident I am explaining to the right place. Wikipedia. Not Wikitia or anywhere else. IonaFyne. IonaFyne (talk) 12:18, 18 September 2023 (UTC)

@IonaFyne Wikimedia Commons and Wikipedia are indeed linked, they are both part of the Wikimedia Foundation. Commons is basically where the images are kept. When you upload pictures at Wikipedias Wikipedia:File upload wizard, you are often sent to Commons.
Wikitia otoh is an independent/unconnected whatever. How/why they do what they do I don't know, per their webpage "Some of Wikitia's pages are sourced from Wikipedia.org's Mainspace and Draftspace. Wikitia is not affiliated to Wikimedia Foundation, unless otherwise noted." So it seems they take Wikipedia-stuff and put it on their website, presumably to make a profit somehow.
On your need to reply, if you check User talk:IonaFyne, both templated messages have links to where you reply, in the words "its entry."
Hope this helps some. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 12:35, 18 September 2023 (UTC)
@IonaFyne presumably "own work" is wrong on these. Someone actually created those; photographing them might effectively create a derivative work (because of the frame) but you still need to deal with the copyright of the underlying work. I imagine those would still be in copyright. If you are the heir to the artist, then this can be sorted out. Otherwise, you would need to determine who that is and get their permission. - Jmabel ! talk 19:31, 18 September 2023 (UTC)
Yes thank you to G.G.S. I am learning.
And thank you to Jmabel. I am heir to the artist, so how do I sort this out, please?
Also two photographs were not questioned, only the images of a painting and of a pen and ink sketch. IonaFyne (talk) 14:56, 19 September 2023 (UTC)
@IonaFyne: if you are heir to the artist, please (1) attribute the work correctly (artist's name; if you like you can add "photographed by…"); (2) instead of {{self|cc-by-sa-4.0}} use {{self|cc-by-sa-4.0-heirs}}.

  • The fact that someone did not challenge a particular photo doesn't mean they won't. Probably these leapt out at someone as obviously not your own work. Yes, you should sort things out correctly on those, too.
  • You need to add (parent) categories to Category:Colin Wyatt.
  • It sounds like you are writing on en-wiki about a subject with which you have a connection. Have you read en:WP:COI? Have you done the required disclosure? (No need to answer me here, but definitely a need to do so.)

Oldest Toddler - My 'one year' experience as Wikimedian

I will be completing one year at Wikimedia by 23 Sep 2023.

I am - a retired Professor from Mumbai, India

I did - some edits, consistently, with just one copy right issue and one ‘move’. I was at Wiki Conference 2023 at Hyderabad. Partifcipated at Wiki Love Monuments India 2022 (2023). I faced lot of tech issues; being new at Wiki, it took quiet a while to find answers to my queries. My moderate skills at computer felt inadequate. I felt something very cryptic when I looked at communities; seemed so affectionate, united, benevolent; yet less approachable.

I wanted - to be a part of communities those sharing my niche interest. Tibetan Vajrayana Iconography. With tons of pictures shot at hostile Himalayan monasteries, I needed a community that would provide a purpose and place at Wiki.

I will - continue to search for such community at Tibetan art, culture and religious forums. Improve my skills of assimilating tech documentation, share my projects at relevant groups. I am now working on QR coding of Academic curricula (syllabus) of graduate course programs at Mumbai University; a self- propelled project.

I Thank you, all for inducting me into Wiki, inspiring me to sustain. Regards

Thank you for this interesting feedback. I am not sure if we have a team or official place where this is more appropriate, but I believe you could find more interested editors in Vajrayana Buddhism (really nice uploads by the way) in the Buddhism project of the English wikipedia. @Trueconscience In short that since you haven't made a userpage, there is none but you can make it if you like. Adding a logo to the infobox for an organization

Hi, please explain how to insert a logo that I have permission to use on an organization's infobox. Thank you. BrilliantCherryBlossom (talk) 17:42, 19 September 2023 (UTC)

@BrilliantCherryBlossom: When you say "that I have permission to use," do you mean that it is public domain (e.g. below the threshold of originality), free-licensed, or just that someone said, "You can use this"?
When you say "an organization's infobox" do you mean a {{Wikidata Infobox}} on Commons, or do you mean an Infobox in an article on Wikipedia (and, if the latter, are you asking about Wikipedia in a particular language)?

@MultitrendIndo1 We/you probably could upload your logo on Commons, see "Licensing" at for example File:Livingston International 2023 logo.jpg. Free Use Pictures?

If a picture of a government official is on a government website would that picture be considered "free use"? If so, what would the process be for including it in an article. Thanks - new editor here. The Uptight Man (talk) 16:30, 20 September 2023 (UTC)

It would depend on which government. U.S. federal government works are public domain, but state government works would generally not be. Foreign government works are usually copyrighted, but some of them have free licenses. Abzeronow (talk) 16:36, 20 September 2023 (UTC)
You can't assume it, you have to check the individual cases. For example, this particular image [9] is ok, compare clear statement above image with Commons:Licensing#Well-known_licenses. This image [10] otoh is not, check copyright info on website. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 17:23, 20 September 2023 (UTC)

Figure tag

Hello, I need to add a tag to a figure I wish to use in an article I'm working on. The figure is a photo of a 1776-dated officer commission for a Revolutionary War soldier that has been in an archive for 100+ years. The archive has just given me permission to use it "as you wish." There are no copyrights involved, and it has never been published. Which tag should I use? Many thanks.Tfhentz (talk) 00:56, 21 September 2023 (UTC)

HS2 Press Gallery

Hello, been working on some articles for infrastructure on HS2. I want to add some images to them but I'm not sure what the process is to get the correct licensing etc on them - I've emailed them and they say it's fine so long as I give credit to them. How should I proceed? MajorScafellPike (talk) 13:05, 21 September 2023 (UTC)

@MajorScafellPike The copyright holder has to willingly release their image under one of the "ok" licenses at Commons:Licensing#Well-known_licenses, which they may not be willing to do, since it means "donating it to the world", pretty much. They can do so by marking images as licensed as such on their website (example:[11], see below image, left side), and then you can upload it, or have a representative register and upload it on Commons themselves, or use COM:VRT.
You could also try to find someone local willing to take new pics for you (assuming that's legally possible), perhaps ask in places like Wikipedia talk:WikiProject United Kingdom or COM:R. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 14:14, 21 September 2023 (UTC)
See, this is what I was thinking, they're happy for me to use it but they don't want to release it to Commons themselves it seems - I'm guessing this is because it's normally for the press who use different ways of notating copyright.
I can try asking around but I doubt many folks on the WikiProject are HS2 employees :D MajorScafellPike (talk) 14:23, 21 September 2023 (UTC)
When you say "they're happy for me to use it but they don't want to release it to Commons themselves", do you mean just that they don't want to get involved with Commons, or that they are willing to give you permission, but don't want to release them to the world?
If it's the former, they could send an email as in COM:VRT (they'd still have to do something, but just send an email). But if it's the latter (as I suspect), then you're out of luck. ColinFine (talk) 21:31, 21 September 2023 (UTC)

Short answer, no, press kits are not automatically Creative Commons. For it to have a CC license, the license has to be explicitly stated. If you intend on using it for a Wikipedia article, I suggest reading Wikipedia's policies on non-free files w:Wikipedia:Non-free content criteria, and if it meets the policy, upload it locally to Wikipedia at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Upload Abzeronow (talk) 18:54, 20 September 2023 (UTC)

In the article Adamson Tannehill, the second figure ("Continental Army commission for Third Lt. Adamson Tannehill of...") will not enlarge when it is in expanded view. That's because it's a TIFF. Normal behavior for a TIFF: most browsers don't have built-in support for viewing them. - Jmabel ! talk 17:10, 21 September 2023 (UTC)
@Tfhentz, I see that you've replaced the image with a JPG format. It is important to note that the change in format involves the loss of information. As you can see, the JPG file size is 163KiB and the TIFF was 991KiB. TIFF is a lossless file format, while JPG is a lossy format that favors compact filesize over fidelity to the original pixels. While JPGs can produce great results for normal photographs and other images where this doesn't matter, I highly recommend that you choose PNG instead. PNG is a lossless, modern format that still manages to do some compression. Since this is a historical document, I would imagine that people could be interested in getting up close and zooming in. After all, that's what brought you here in the first place. And you know, file size isn't a real concern on Commons. Elizium23 (talk) 07:09, 22 September 2023 (UTC)
Great suggestion! I've replaced the image fie with a PNG. Vastly improved. Cheers. Tfhentz (talk) 13:39, 22 September 2023 (UTC)
@Tfhentz and Elizium23: Please note that any png image will look fuzzy when scaled down (due to design decisions discussed in phab:T192744) or jaggy when scaled up.   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 21:00, 22 September 2023 (UTC)
That's a fair point, but it still seems like the best choice at this point. I looked in Commons:File types#Images and Category:Another file templates, but there is no {{PNG with TIFF version}} available. I think it's good that the original TIFF is available, and perhaps somehow can be linked from the PNG? Do you have any better recommedations? Elizium23 (talk) 21:27, 22 September 2023 (UTC)
@Elizium23: the TIFF & PNG should be linked to one another with {{Other version}}. - Jmabel ! talk 01:54, 23 September 2023 (UTC)

Photos

If a person is part of a poltical party, are we not allowed to use their photos thats on the offical government website? MagicMagicKing (talk) 01:22, 22 September 2023 (UTC)

  • @MagicMagicKing: Most governments in most countries reserve copyright just like most other people and organizations do. Being part of a political party is irrelevant; the same would apply for pictures of a civil servant, a building, etc. Also, even governments like the U.S. federal government that place all work by their employees in the public domain may have things on their websites that were originally produced by someone else, and those materials don't lose their copyright by being on a U.S. federal government web site. So, in general: no, typically we are not allowed to use such photos. - Jmabel ! talk 02:29, 22 September 2023 (UTC)
Thay makes sense. Does that mean all photos on Wikipedia are uploaded via the original copy right holder? Even historical or poltical ones? MagicMagicKing (talk) 05:15, 22 September 2023 (UTC)
@MagicMagicKing It depends. For example, some photos are public domain (which mostly means old), or clearly marked with a Commons-ok license, like [12], and you can upload those on Commons, provided you do it right. English Wikipedia also has a rule that says basically that if an article subject is dead, and no "free" alternative is available, then you can add a "non-free" leadimage to that article. These however, are uploaded on Wikipedia itself, not Commons, and again, you have to do it right. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 08:17, 22 September 2023 (UTC)
I think I read once of a parliament or similar who took photos specifically with the purpose that these photos should be made available for WP/Commons. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 08:20, 22 September 2023 (UTC)
    • Several governments have done that, and some governments are very generous with images they own. For example, the city government of Seattle, where I live, has never turned down a request I've made to free-license an image where they properly own the rights, and continually publishes thousands of free-licensed images without our prompting. But they have a roughly 6-person archivists' office, which is probably as large as any city that size, and comparable to many cities ten times as large. - Jmabel ! talk 17:56, 22 September 2023 (UTC)

Sorry for awkward title, wasn't sure how to say it! I would like to upload a photo of a bunch of spray paint cans. They all have the brand's logo and I guess the overall can design is presumably copyrighted too, so I wasn't sure it would be okay to upload because of that. But I see other similar photos that had brands copyrighted designs in them, like the two I've attached below so is this okay?

Thank you, and sorry if it's a silly question, copyright is a serious issue to I want to be extra sure before I upload the photo! -- NotCharizard 🗨 06:10, 19 September 2023 (UTC)

@Notcharizard: images with product logos and graphics certainly can be copyright violations and often are, see COM:PACKAGING. I believe the black spray can is OK and qualifies for exception 2, as the logo is simple text logo. The energy drink cans might be a copyvio. Hi could somebody take a look at Commons:Deletion requests/File:Immanuel Estermann.jpg. Per AIP archives it can be freely used. Good idea. Looking at a few of those, some were deleted and some were kept because they were PD-old or because the copyright holder provided a specific license. Those don't really help in this case. We would have to find a similar case. -- Asclepias (talk) 15:15, 23 September 2023 (UTC)
I commented in the DR. -- Asclepias (talk) 15:15, 23 September 2023 (UTC)

The photos of the artists / festival view that I took at the festival

I'm reading Wikipedia:Image use policy before uploading my images, and I saw the guidelines here.

Normally do not require consent of the subject

  • A street performer during a performance
  • An anonymous person in a public place, especially as part of a larger crowd
  • Partygoers at a large private party where photography is expected
  • A basketball player competing in a match open to the public

Then, is it okay to freely upload photos of the artists I took at the festival or images of the festival? The festivals are not prohibited from taking photos, I'm going to use my pictures for artist articles and festival articles.

Maybe I take it as a guidelines that says I can upload freely, but since this is my first time, I would like to check for sure and upload it! 올해의수상자 (talk) 02:19, 24 September 2023 (UTC)

  • @올해의수상자: By "artists" do you mean performers or visual artists? If they were performing at the time, then certainly they have no expectation of privacy. If they were merely present, expectations of privacy vary in different countries. In the U.S. a person walking down the street has no legal expectation of privacy; in France they do. I'm guessing you are asking about South Korea. This is probably the best summary I've seen of the current situation there. It sounds like you would want to add the template {{Personality rights}} on the file pages of these photos to underline that there are non-copyright limitations on how the images may be used, but otherwise I think you are in the clear. - Jmabel ! talk 03:47, 24 September 2023 (UTC)
Thank you! In the case of popular people, I can shoot and upload as I want, but in the case of ordinary people, it is sometimes a controversial issue in Korea, so I will look for more laws and upload the image. 올해의수상자 (talk) 04:27, 24 September 2023 (UTC)
Another aspect is whether the festival took place in public space or on a fenced area with access controls. In the second case, the organizer has a domiciliary right, which may state that photography is permitted for private purposes and for social media. For Wikipedia, however, accreditation is required. This depends on both the country and the T&Cs. Also note that in some cases Wikipedia accepts an image (under copyright), but the organizer sees it differently and gets right with it under state law. In such cases it was recommended in the past that the photographer protects himself by creating a fake account and using it for uploading (in this case it is too late for that after your question here). C.Suthorn (@Life_is@no-pony.farm - p7.ee/p) (talk) 08:41, 24 September 2023 (UTC)
    • If, as indicated in the original post, the festival has no limitation on taking photos, that last seems unnecessarily cautious. And, again, I don't know about South Korea, but in the U.S. (for example) the notion of "public" and "private" for expectation of privacy is very different than for most other purposes. For example, a plaza outside of a building may be legally owned by the owners of the building, but is still considered "public" for purposes of photography; a reading room at a library is public space in almost all respects, but is considered "private" for purposes of photography. - Jmabel ! talk 15:48, 24 September 2023 (UTC)

Upload a new version without overwriting the original?

I just transferred a photo from FlickR and made some significant changes to it to be able to use it on Wikipedia. I went to "Upload a new version" to retain all the file information and the FlickR review tag but the original file ended up overwritten. How can I retain the information and the review tag without overwriting the original file? Surtsicna (talk) 09:44, 24 September 2023 (UTC)

@Surtsicna: "Upload new version" precisely means overwrite.
There are a couple of ways you can go here. Probably the simplest is to just do an upload to a different filename and link the two images with {{Derivative works}} / {{Derived from}}. - Jmabel ! talk 15:50, 24 September 2023 (UTC)

Photographing publicly displayed signage that includes photographs

Hi all, Apologies if this question has been asked before..

I note that original photographs of publicly displayed signage, plaques, etc. that are text-based seem to be permitted, as per https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:1960_Civil_Rights_Demonstration_historical_marker,_Jacksonville.JPG . Here in New South Wales, Australia, my local civic council has erected display boards in some public places that interpret the history of the area and include historic photographs, etc. that I cannot find any regular copyright-free source for. My question is whether it is permissible to upload original photos of either the entire boards, or of particular images displayed on them, without seeking further permission, or would the copyright reside with the council under whose auspices they are displayed, and/or with the collections (e.g. of historic images) from which they sourced the originals? I am guessing laws may vary from country to country, but would welcome any advice on this. Thanks in advance - Tony Rees, Australia Tony 1212 (talk) 00:02, 25 September 2023 (UTC)

"Text-based" is not enough to be necessarily permitted, but text-based signs are often below the threshold of originality. Actually, the one you link (why link to en-wiki, by the way, rather than an internal link here on Commons?) might very well be problematic, but that's not the thrust of your question, so let's not get distracted by that. (FWIW, Florida has pretty generous policies on government-generated content.)
Typically if there are copyrighted photos within the sign, you need to remove them one way or another. I personally recommend using GIMP or a similar tool to cover the photo with a Gaussian blur. Here's an example of something similar where I used that technique to blur out copyrighted paintings. You'll note that in low resolution everything looks normal, but if you zoom in, the paintings are sufficiently blurred to presumably not raise a copyright issue. - Jmabel ! talk 00:15, 25 September 2023 (UTC)
Sorry, my oversight RE the cited link. I started with a malformed file ref, tried to fix it and got a whole image that I did not want, then backtracked too far to the wikipedia start point :) RE the possibly non Public Domain image on the board - looks like I cannot use it then, since that was what I actually wanted to reproduce. Thanks for the response anyway. Tony 1212 (talk) 01:38, 25 September 2023 (UTC)
@Tony 1212: that would work only in a country with very strong freedom of panorama. - Jmabel ! talk 01:52, 25 September 2023 (UTC)

Question about user categories

I hope all is well. I am considering creating a user category for all the images I've uploaded to Wikimedia Commons. But, is there a way to get every file into the category without having to manually add it to every file page (e.g. a bot)? Thanks and have a great day! @DiscoA340: Yes, what would you want to call it?   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 20:52, 24 September 2023 (UTC)
@Jeff G. I think "Files uploaded by DiscoA340" would be good. What is the name of the bot I need to use? Thanks! DiscoA340 (talk) 21:10, 24 September 2023 (UTC)
@Jeff G. On second thought "Category:Uploads by DiscoA340" would be better. DiscoA340 (talk) 21:25, 24 September 2023 (UTC)
@DiscoA340: I've created the category for you: Category:Uploads by DiscoA340. There are a few ways to get all of your existing images into it. I personally would probably use VFC, starting it from your own Special:MyUploads page, but there are other ways. Jeff may have a better suggestion. I tend to use VFC as a very multi-purpose tool. - Jmabel ! talk 00:04, 25 September 2023 (UTC)
@Jmabel: VFC doesn't have an easy-to-use "Add category:" action like AWB, but one can use the "append any text" action with a carriage return before the category. Note that there may be as many as 11,700 uploads - even counting them is stressing out my laptop.   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 01:46, 25 September 2023 (UTC)
@Jeff G.: exactly. I almost never find myself using AWB because VFC can be tricked into doing anything I really want it to do. - Jmabel ! talk 01:49, 25 September 2023 (UTC)
@Jeff G., @Jmabel Thanks for your help! I'll try using VFC to add the images to the user category. Have a great day! DiscoA340 (talk) 16:02, 25 September 2023 (UTC)
@Jeff G., @Jmabel: When adding a carriage return before the category to be appended, do you need to use RegEx and a CR code, or can you just put a new line in the "text to insert" box? (I haven't tried VFC before but I can see a lot of uses for it now that my uploads are too numerous to edit manually.) Thanks, Choliamb (talk) 16:23, 25 September 2023 (UTC)
@Choliamb: just put a new line in the "text to insert" box. - Jmabel ! talk 18:03, 25 September 2023 (UTC)
@Jmabel After multiple different attempts, I have found that around 3,000 images, it becomes nearly impossible to successfully load all of them (on a good computer as well). Since this is editing so many files, I don't want to mess up or overload the system. That could be very problematic if I don't have a backup way to fix any unforeseen issues. Is there any other way that you know of? If not, it might not be possible, at least with the amount of files I have. Thanks for your help anyways, have a great day! Quick question

Hey! I don't usually edit commons (more active on enwiki), but I was wondering is if it would be okay to upload images from the series Say Hello to Black Jack by Shuho Sato. While I am aware commercial works are almost always copyrighted, in this case the author canceled his contract with his publisher and later announced [13] (translation via Anime News Network [14]) that he is "now allowing free secondary use ... for both commercial and non-commercial use domestically and abroad" and ANN described it as effectively in public domain [15]. Would it be okay to upload images of this manga to commons? Thanks. Link20XX (talk) 23:03, 25 September 2023 (UTC)

  • @Link20XX: Probably good, but hard to be sure. It's too bad he doesn't say anything explicitly about derivative works being OK; someone might want to contact him to clarify that. Also: is it completely clear that he owns the rights in question, and that is not being contested by the prior publisher? - Jmabel ! talk 23:52, 25 September 2023 (UTC)
    • @Jmabel: ANN previously reported that "Sato has received a certificate from [the publisher] confirming that the two parties no longer had a contract" [16]. Regarding derivative works, while the ANN article doesn't include this, the blog post via machine translation seems to explicitly mention derivative works as acceptable and according to its jawiki article several have been made, such as parodies and a novelization. Link20XX (talk) 00:01, 26 September 2023 (UTC)
      • @Link20XX: Great! (I'm really surprised he isn't requiring attribution, though. We should certainly attribute, and any tag/template we create should suggest others do so as a courtesy.) I'd suggest making up a custom template describing the situation, with citations. I don't really have experience doing that in a case like this; I'd guess it should "wrap around" {{PD-author}}. If no one gives you clearer advice here within about 24 hours, you might take this to Commons:Village pump/Copyright where there may be more expertise. If you do that, please link the current discussion here. - Jmabel ! talk 00:11, 26 September 2023 (UTC)

Can i upload any Company logo picture from its company's website or its Social Media like Facebook. I'm confused that how can i know that a company provides its logo/image is for free use?Sayeed2k (talk) 10:24, 26 September 2023 (UTC)

@Sayeed2k If a logo "consists only of simple geometric shapes or text" you can upload it on Commons, provided you do it correctly. Here is an example, note what it says under "Licensing": File:Enhanced Games logo.jpg
If a logo is more complex, and the company already has an article on English Wikipedia (not draft), you can upload it on English Wikipedia as "non free" and use it as a lead-image in that article. You do that by going to WP:FUW and picking "Upload a non-free file". Hope this helps some. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 12:12, 26 September 2023 (UTC)

Very few companies would choose to provide their logos for free use: they would not usually want anybody being able to use or alter them legally! As GGS says, if a logo is very simple, then they may not be able to claim any protection for it. ColinFine (talk) 12:31, 26 September 2023 (UTC)

Eithersummer (talk) 15:47, 26 September 2023 (UTC)

@Eithersummer: This appears to be a known issue with diagrams made on Diagrams.net (a.k.a. Draw.io) (some technical discussion is here: T138783). There are two different workarounds for this described in a help page on Draw.io.
You can either:
  1. When you export the diagram to SVG, change the "Text Settings" option to "Convert labels to SVG".
  2. Disable word wrap and formatting for all text: Select all objects in the diagram, then uncheck the "Word Wrap" and "Formatted Text" options on the right side. Afterwards, manually add line breaks if the text doesn't fit on one line.

I would like to see my name, Holly Downing, included (in paragraph 3 of the article) which I paste below from the Wikipedia Mezzotint page. I have been making Mezzotints, since 1972, so before any of today's practitioners listed below.

Since the mid-nineteenth century it has been relatively little used, as lithography and other techniques produced comparable results more easily. Sir Frank Short (1857–1945) was an important pioneer of the mezzotint revival in the United Kingdom along with Peter Ilsted (1864–1933) in Denmark. Today's practitioners of the mezzotint process include Craig McPherson (b. 1948), Frederick Mershimer (b. 1958), Rita Vandevorst (b. 1958, Belgium) and Carol Wax (b. 1953), Holly Downing (b. 1948) (https://hollydowning.com). 98.207.83.231 00:08, 27 September 2023 (UTC)

hasbwstatement in search API (json)

Hello everyone,

we're planning a major photography campaign for a project where we want to use wikidata, wikipedia and wikimedia commons together with our (more proprietary) data on building a kind of GIS like environment.

The photographs we'd be creating shall be searchable via the Wikidata ID (e.g. Q18543165 for Castle of Bominaco) using the property *depict* (P180).

This is working on the HTML interface like here: <https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?profile=default&search=haswbstatement%253AP180%253DQ18543165>

But I fail to get it working as API with JSON as output: <https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/api.php?action=query&list=search ....>

What would be the syntax? Is it possible?

Photo Upload

Hello,

I have a new Wikipedia headshot for my client. I have tried to upload it a few times but I am unable to. Any suggestions? User2v (talk) 15:35, 28 September 2023 (UTC)

@User2v: I don't have an answer to your immediate question, but I see you are also editing on en-wiki, and that your wording above suggest that you are doing paid editing. Please see en-wiki's policies on conflicts of interest. There are some disclosures you need to make, or your account is likely to be blocked on en-wiki.
I'll guess you were trying to do a cross-wiki upload of the photo. If you upload here on Commons using Special:UploadWizard it will probably work.
Do note:
  • You should attribute the actual photographer as the author of the photo.
  • If you are not that actual photographer, and there is no online indication of the actual photographer offering an appropriate free license for the photo, you are going to have to go through the COM:VRT process. If the copyright has been transferred to you, what they'll need is a copy of the document transferring copyright. If the copyright is still owned by the photographer, then the photographer must send the required email offering the relevant license.
I hope that helps. - Jmabel ! talk 16:43, 28 September 2023 (UTC)

Why are skins not working?

@PLMMJ:
  1. You'd probably want to ask that on the English-language Wikipedia (I'm guessing you mean the English-language Wikipedia, but there are over 200 Wikipedias).
  2. Did your preferences for your account get changed, or is something overriding your preferences? If the former, you can fix that easily in your preferences (on the relevant Wikipedia).

Interesting. The photo File:Bundesarchiv B 145 Bild-F054628-0034, Ludwigshafen, CDU-Bundesparteitag.jpg came from the Bundesarchiv. At https://www.bild.bundesarchiv.de/dba/de/search/?query=B+145+Bild-F054628-0034, they identify it as "Bertil Lidegard", not "Bertil Lidgard". Our initial import said the same. User:Lucarelli changed it. I don't think there is/was a "Bertil Lidegard", though. A Google search shows that name only in this PDF, which I don't seem to be able to download. Google's scan says, "…sitzenden der Sammlungspartei Schwedens, Bertil Lidegard, und. Harald Lied aus Norwegen…", so it's probably just a typo for "Bertil Lidgard".
@Linelund: do the other three images at Category:Bertil Lidgard look correct to you? (None are high-res, but they'd be better than nothing.)
As for you providing us a photo: if you have one that either (1) you took, or (2) that was taken by a living family member who would be able to provide permission, or (3) where you are the heir of the person who took the photo, that would be great. Otherwise, since copyright normally belongs to the photographer, not the subject of the photo, you are likely to have a tricky time coming up with something with a "clean" copyright. (If you are the photographer, it's simple; if you are the photogapher's heir, it's a little more complicated; if you just know the photographer and can get their permission, it's a step more complicated. Let me know which situation applies & I can walk you through it.)
I'll let the Commons:Bundesarchiv team know there is a problem here with the current photo. - Jmabel ! talk 00:22, 28 September 2023 (UTC)
There is one other photo from this event at the Bundesarchiv showing "Bertil Lidegard", see [18] (apparently it was not among those transferred to Wikimedia Commons). It's the man on the left with his glasses in his right hand. I can't really tell if the identification is correct or not. Lidegard was apparently the name used by the CDU party (even if it was wrong), the PDF that was mentioned features a transcript of the speech by party chairman Helmut Kohl, who welcomes many many many guests, among them "Bertil Lidegard" from Sweden. --Rosenzweig τ 15:18, 28 September 2023 (UTC)
The picture is still not a picture of my father. I can send you o correct picture if you like. Please till me how to send it. 83.233.126.249 21:30, 28 September 2023 (UTC)
Yes,the three pictures from the site, you call ”categori:Bertil Lidgard” is correct! Sorry if I missunderstood your latest message! Please change the picture to one of the correct ones. 83.233.126.249 21:43, 28 September 2023 (UTC)
@Linelund: again, if you wish to provide a picture, see my remark above, "As for you providing us a photo …". Which of these three scenarios would be the case for the photo in question? Or is it "none of the above," in which case this would probably be more trouble to you than it is worth. - Jmabel ! talk 01:15, 29 September 2023 (UTC)
I would prefer the picture in the middle where my father wears a butterfly. The picture is marked SPA2.jpg. Thanks in advance! 83.233.126.249 06:37, 29 September 2023 (UTC)
@Linelund: (1) it's lower resolution than the one I chose. (2) there is nothing to stop you from creating an appropriately cropped version of that yourself, and proposing it at wikidata:Wikidata:Project chat as the image for his Wikidata item. You shouldn't make the change on Wikidata yourself, because you have an obvious potential conflict of interest. - Jmabel ! talk 15:45, 29 September 2023 (UTC)
Thanks for changing the primary picture. The second picture below is still wrong! Please also delete that picture! 83.233.126.249 18:08, 29 September 2023 (UTC)
I changed the Wikidata image, which propagates out to all sites that use Wikidata to get their primary image. No idea what you mean by "The second picture below". I presume you are talking about some specific page on one of the 400 or so WMF projects, but I have no idea which. Please link the page if you want someone to look at it. - Jmabel ! talk 21:02, 29 September 2023 (UTC)

Picture of the Day

I just subscribed and want to use a picture of the day. The links are RSS feed and Twitter (I don't use Twitter). Where is a link to the page where the image is stored in Wikimedia so I can get a link from there? I do not see the home link of the picture in Wikimedia itself. Thank you for your reply. 98.164.34.164 13:17, 29 September 2023 (UTC)

You can always click through on a picture to get to its source on Wikimedia Commons. (You might need to make one more click, but it should be obvious.) - Jmabel ! talk 15:48, 29 September 2023 (UTC)

How to replace a gif with a video (mp4)?

https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:T-72M4CZ-vystrel.gif#filehistory should not have been a gif to begin with – it's 35 MB for a few seconds of video. Running it through ffmpeg -i T-72M4CZ-vystrel.gif -c:v libx264 -preset slower T-72M4CZ-vystrel.mp4 gives a much more reasonable 1.9 MB, at no visible degradation. How do I replace the old file gif file with an MPEG video?

I was tempted to just upload a new version, but that'd assign the same file name, which ends in .gif. Is there a formally correct way to do this? MüllerMarcus (talk) 18:18, 29 September 2023 (UTC)

You should upload the mp4 video as a new file (and mark it as derivative of the gif file). Ruslik (talk) 18:52, 29 September 2023 (UTC)
@MüllerMarcus: "mark it as derivative" => on the original you user {{Derivative works}} and on your new one you use {{Derived from}}if you follow the links where I've named those templates, the rest of the instructions for using them are there. - Jmabel ! talk 21:05, 29 September 2023 (UTC)

Appropriate license tag

I cropped a public domain image in Wikimedia commons: original --> cropped. In the upload wizard, there didn't seem to be an appropriate license tag to select – it's not CC0, I don't think (though I'm not sure), it's just public domain. What is the appropriate license to add to the cropped version? Thanks. Brycehughes (talk) 18:48, 29 September 2023 (UTC)

Cropping a public domain image always results in a public domain image. Ruslik (talk) 18:53, 29 September 2023 (UTC)
Yep, so what do I add to the metadata on the image? Brycehughes (talk) 19:09, 29 September 2023 (UTC)

Copyright help regarding File:Red Bull Icon.svg

I need help to find the correct license to the logo.

--BabidP (talk) 19:16, 29 September 2023 (UTC)

@BabidP: I would assume that is copyrighted with no free license available. Why do you think otherwise? - Jmabel ! talk 21:11, 29 September 2023 (UTC)
@BabidP: it is probably acceptable as an identifying infobox logo on the enwiki under their strict non-free media policy but it must comply with all 10 non-free media policy requirements of that policy. Ww2censor (talk) 21:33, 29 September 2023 (UTC)
Which is to say that it should be deleted on Commons. That image or an equivalent is already on the English-language Wikipedia at [[[:en:File:RedBullEnergyDrink.svg]]. - Jmabel ! talk 22:03, 29 September 2023 (UTC)

License review request

These files were uploaded from a external site under a custom license. Can someone review them? Thx. Larryasou (talk) 09:13, 25 September 2023 (UTC)

@Bellminsterboy: , I don't see how you get a free license from https://historicengland.org.uk/terms/website-terms-conditions/ (under User-submitted content" which states
"You (or the copyright owner) remain the owner of copyright in any content and are free to republish it wherever you (or the owner) so wish, subject to any other restraints. You agree however to abide by Historic England's rules in relation to commercial photography at Historic England sites, namely that photographs taken at Historic England sites may not be exploited in any commercial context without the prior written consent of Historic England. Please note too that photography at non-Historic England sites may be subject to similar or different restrictions.
All material must comply with the User Content Pages - Rules of Acceptable Use, set out below."
This is a clear non-commercial restriction. There is a separate paragraph under their own content which states "All content, designs, text, graphics, software compilations and source codes on this website are the copyright of Historic England and/or its content providers.
Reproduction of part or all of the contents of this website in any form is prohibited other than for individual use only and may not be recopied and shared with a third party except as set out in User-submitted content, below. The permission to recopy by an individual does not allow for incorporation of material or any part of it in any work or publication, whether in hard copy, electronic, or any other form. Any other use of the website without prior written consent from Historic England is strictly forbidden." Abzeronow (talk) 16:05, 25 September 2023 (UTC)
@Abzeronow Hi, Abzeronow. These photos should be published in accordance with Missing Pieces Project: Contribution Terms and Conditions and please see section "5. Ownership of your Contribution". Larryasou (talk) 16:53, 25 September 2023 (UTC)
Yes, I do see that section 5 appears to allow the copyright owner to grant a free license. File:St Mary Redcliffe aerial.jpg seems to be an issue since the file mentions Heather Gordon while the link https://historicengland.org.uk/listing/the-list/list-entry/1218848?section=comments-and-photos seems to say it was uploaded by "Simon Jones". OK, I see it now, should have put the site to trusted on NoScript first. Abzeronow (talk) 17:01, 25 September 2023 (UTC)
@Abzeronow Will you tag them? I was unable to create any archive with them sicne they are loading dynamiclly via JavaScript. Larryasou (talk) 16:05, 25 September 2023 (UTC)

Image downloads

There are several images that I would like to obtain downloads for, but a larger size (and resolution) than is offered. In particular, several on the Conrad Wise Chapman page at this link:

https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Conrad_Wise_Chapman

There are several others as well. How would I go about obtaining them from you? Thanks. Rblackmon (talk) 00:28, 29 September 2023 (UTC)

@Rblackmon: We don't have any general way to get higher resolution images than what we have on this site; we always ask users to upload the highest resolution they have available. Most of the images on that page are only of moderate resolution. May I assume that you are already aware that the maximum resolution we have is indicated below the picture, and that you are aware of how to download that maximum resolution? That said, if you are talking about some specific image or some small number of images, someone might have a clue, but probably no one is going to open-endedly research 50+ images. - Jmabel ! talk 01:25, 29 September 2023 (UTC)
My suggestion would be to contact the original uploader of any image and see if they have, or can create a copy at a higher resolution. That said, if a low res file has been released under an open license, does that automatically then transfer to the same at a higher resolution than initially released? I was once told yes, but do not really know... Tony 1212 (talk) 22:37, 29 September 2023 (UTC)
@Tony 1212: we (Commons) assume that a release of rights on any given resolution of an image implies intent to release the rights regardless of resolution, unless explicitly stated otherwise. On the other hand, the person granting the license is under no obligation to make a higher-resolution file physically available.
An example where we routinely apply the assumption I just mentioned: Seattle Municipal Archives routinely places only moderate-resolution images on their Flickr account. Once we have license review, we routinely upload a higher-res version downloaded from the Archives' own website. - Jmabel ! talk 01:49, 30 September 2023 (UTC)
Thanks for that insight :) Tony 1212 (talk) 03:49, 30 September 2023 (UTC)

Fghjhj (talk) 10:00, 30 September 2023 (UTC)

You should almost never simply upload one picture over another under the same file name. You should upload a new file on Commons, with a distinct file name, and then (assuming it's an uncontroversial change) change the relevant Wikipedia (and/or Wikidata, etc.) to use the new file. - Jmabel ! talk 14:50, 30 September 2023 (UTC)

Geolocation error

This image:

File:Knüttelbach 10.jpg

has far off coordinates. I suppose (but don't know this for sure) that the photo is taken from the downstream slope of the retention reservoir dam, so it should be about here:

Camera location49° 19′ 11.87″ N, 9° 26′ 36.98″ E Kartographer map based on OpenStreetMap.View all coordinates using: OpenStreetMapinfo

In any case, the location of the current coordinates offers no view into the brook's valley.

Sorry for the inconvenience to announce the error here, but I could't find another way to point to it. --Silvicola (talk) 19:56, 27 September 2023 (UTC)

So your geolocation detective work confirmed the location as suggested by me and you corrected the coordinates. Thanks!
As I might stumble upon more geolocation errors: Where and how to bring them to the perception of others? There may not always be an evident correction. In wp-de, where I collaborate most of my time, some quality assurance templates are intended for this purpose. How about here in Commons? --Silvicola (talk) 06:55, 28 September 2023 (UTC)
@Silvicola: You're welcome. I took your word for the better coordinates. What wording and name would you suggest for a geolocation quality assurance template?   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 14:54, 1 October 2023 (UTC)
@User:Jeff G.: To make it as simple as possible: Template:Geolocation quality assurance oder Template:Geolocation error. This template could not only mark errors in coordinates given, but also errors in the verbal description of the location. Perhaps an even more general and comprising template might be preferable; as an almost newby, I seem to be a bad judge about what would be best. Nor do I know the place such a template should have in the category hierarchy. In any case, the template should be easy to find for newbies. --Silvicola (talk) 18:00, 1 October 2023 (UTC)
