Hello, JMF!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Font samples for £ sign[edit]

Yea, I'll be happy to do it. -Kes47 (?) 07:36, 10 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

There it is. Hope you like it :D Kes47 (?) 21:42, 10 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Kes47: Thank you, that is excellent and really kind of you to respond so quickly. My only concern is that it gives the impression that the double bar version is one-third as common as the single bar version but that isn't true: none of the fonts bundled with Windows and only one for ChromeOS (Playfair) have it. Nor is it at all common in publications. So I wonder if perhaps I overstated that aspect? We certainly need at least one or possibly two ₤ but most should be £.
May I be really cheeky and ask that you swap at least one double-bar glyph (Quo opti light, for example) for another in single-bar form? (You used Futura and Plumage in your moreeurofonts.svg - what style do they use, certainly a "Copperplate" sample would be nice). --John Maynard Friedman (talk) 17:10, 11 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Yea, you're right, you asked for only one double bar type. I did the change, and don't worry, is an easy-quick job. -Kes47 (?) 19:24, 11 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Kes47: Fantastic! (I was amused that one of the fonts you added, "Copper plate" is actually quite ordinary, not at all like the one with the flourishes). It should appear in the en:wiki article imminently. Thank you again. --John Maynard Friedman (talk) 21:00, 11 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I'm glad you like it. Actually Copperplate was one of my original options. By the way, I appreciate your gesture, but Wikipedia doesn't allow signatures in the articles. It surely apply to images as well (as I've never seen an author been mentioned in the description space). So please, remove my user name from the article the next time you edit it, is good enough for me to appear in the file page. Saludos :D -Kes47 (?) 03:49, 12 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Kes47: Thank you again and yes, I thought it odd and will remove. I guess the attribution is to the Wikimedia Foundation? I'm thinking here of an external agency reusing your work and not knowing how they should comply with the A bit of CCbyA. --John Maynard Friedman (talk) 11:00, 12 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

$ sign[edit]

Hello again. I've been busy, so I'll do the image by the weekend. I have no problem to make it 9 samples, for the sake of uniformity, or you prefer it 4 samples? -Kes47 [REPORT AN ERROR] 16:56, 26 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Kes47: No rush and thank you. For the purpose I want it (to illustrate Dollar sign on en.wikipedia), four would be enough but nine would nice. I know it is not trivial to scan through a catalogue of fonts so didn't want to push my luck. If you do decide to do nine, it doesn't matter how many of each type so long as it is at least three (at least one if you do a four-up). Thank you again. --John Maynard Friedman (talk) 17:51, 26 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Hello. It turns out I'm free until now. So here's the deal, the two bars version of the dolar sign is actually pretty unusual. It doesn't really appear in the "Wanted" posters, or the "Wanted" posters related fonts, for that matter. It's more common to find noncontinuous bar versions. So I'll put the 3 two bars signs, 5 with one bar and 2 with a noncontinuous bar. Among those, it's gonna be "Hoedown" and "Clarendon" the two Wanted poster related ones. What do you think? -Kes47 [REPORT AN ERROR] 04:26, 7 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
In an ideal world where you have nothing better to do with your time, the ratio between types would approximate to their real world distribution (meaning 'easy to find', not a detailed census of every typeface on the market). If you had to search really hard for examples of the two bar style, then two instances or even just one might be entirely reasonable. Likewise if there were a lot of non-continuous, they should have three or more. Of course all that is very easy for me to say, since you are doing the work not me! For my purposes, your proposal already does what I want and would be very acceptable, thank you. And I was just being sentimental about the Wanted posters :-) --John Maynard Friedman (talk) 17:27, 7 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
There it is :^) -Kes47 [REPORT AN ERROR] 18:18, 8 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Kes47: Brilliant! I don't know if Commons does barnstars, but you certainly deserve one or three. Thank you! --John Maynard Friedman (talk) 19:46, 8 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
You're welcome :D -Kes47 [REPORT AN ERROR] 02:46, 14 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
