Handling incorrect pronunciation

File:LL-Q1860 (eng)-Vininn126-unanimity.wav is incorrect since according to both Cambridge and Wiktionary the stress should be on the "ni" part, not the "nam" part. What should be done about it? Aaron Liu (talk) 02:18, 1 July 2023 (UTC)

Uploading video flag

I am trying to upload a video created by me, and an automated filter is labeling it as potentially unconstructive. What does this mean and how can I clear this flag? Thank you. Dr thermano (talk) 20:22, 6 July 2023 (UTC)

@Dr thermano: you seem to have successfully uploaded File:Photonic Soldering.ogv. Is this about something else? (If so, what?) - Jmabel ! talk 20:50, 6 July 2023 (UTC)
@Dr thermano: Please don't delete your questions after someone else has replied to them. (I assume that means it was the file I mentioned.)
Also, the only category you used in adding this file is one that does not exist. Please try to find a more appropriate existing /category, even if it is rather general (or, if you really need a new category, please name it according to the policies at Commons:Categories and give it appropriate parent categories). Thanks. - Jmabel ! talk 20:55, 6 July 2023 (UTC)

This file I made File:Immanuelle wave.gif apparently was deleted for being "too ugly for inclusion" after being nominated by an ip. That doesn't seem like a valid reason for removal, especially for a file with high educational value. Immanuelle ❤️💚💙 (please tag me) 20:15, 1 July 2023 (UTC)

Question About Quality Images

I have a picture that I am currently nominating for Featured Picture here. However, yesterday I just discovered the less rigorous Quality Image process and am wondering if it's okay to have a pitured nominated for both titles at once. Mayfair Rose (talk) 16:13, 2 July 2023 (UTC)

  • @Mayfair Rose: A relatively small number of people are involved in the process of selecting Featured Pictures and Quality Images. I doubt anyone else can speak for them. Did you check the listed rules and see if there was anything saying you could not nominate for both at the same time? - Jmabel ! talk 21:22, 2 July 2023 (UTC)
I don't recall seeing anything in the rules against it, so I'll read over the rules one more time and if there's nothing I'll go ahead and nominate for Quality Image. Mayfair Rose (talk) 21:31, 2 July 2023 (UTC)

Question regarding city logo uploading

I am currently modifing a little village page from my region. They recently changed the crest to a new modern logo. Can I upload the logo in question? I am of course not the creator of the image. Thanks! JDumont004 (talk) 19:10, 2 July 2023 (UTC)

Probably not, but it would help if you name the village, and give a link to the logo. Yann (talk) 19:11, 2 July 2023 (UTC)
-- Asclepias (talk) 20:37, 2 July 2023 (UTC)

Photos for wikipedia page

You have to upload them to Commons only. Then you can use them everywhere. C.Suthorn (@Life_is@no-pony.farm) (talk) 22:29, 2 July 2023 (UTC)
Thank you! WikiLeslie53 (talk) 22:57, 2 July 2023 (UTC)
@WikiLeslie53: This all assumes that either you own the copyright (and will grant a free license) or the images are already free-licensed. Commons only accepts images that are in the public domain (unlikely in this case) or are free-licensed. - Jmabel ! talk 00:39, 3 July 2023 (UTC)

Why will someone sell my picture or write up with out my permission? EasyG7 (talk) 23:44, 2 July 2023 (UTC)

  • @EasyG7: this might happen for all sorts of reasons. For example, they might want to use the content in a book, or they might want to use it for purely aesthetic reasons as part of a photomosaic, or they might want to offer it as a stock photo. Assuming it is free-licensed and they abide by the terms of the license, they may do so. Is there something more specific you are asking? - Jmabel ! talk 00:44, 3 July 2023 (UTC)
@EasyG7 It is not clear from your question what this is about. Did someone upload a picture of you against your will? Or did you upload a picture here (obviously not, at least not with the newly created account?) If there is a picture here that either shows you or that you took: Either you have provided this picture with a free licence in one way or another (e.g. on Flickr), then you yourself have agreed that this picture can be used by everyone and also can be sold by anyone. However, if you have not granted such a licence, then this image must be deleted here because it does not have a free licence. In this case, you can submit a deletion request. Upload Question

Hi: I have been a "user" with "Wiki Commons" for a number of years.

Trade and Mr. Yann have been very helpful to me recently. Q: How to proceed to upload images to this specific category:

https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Stable_Diffusion_works_by_Commons_users

I use "Stable Diffusion" and other "AI Art' platforms in art collaborations. I use Adobe platforms and a number of others in my illustrations. I appreciate everyone's help with this. I would like to upload my images to this category for consideration. A growing number of writers are using my illustrations for their blogs. Regards, David S. Soriano 130.49.20.56 16:32, 3 July 2023 (UTC)

  • I assume you are User:David S. Soriano, whose account has been blocked for repeatedly uploading out-of-scope artwork even after several clear warnings. If so, coming here while not logged in is a violation of your block. User:Trade has been in communication with you on your user talk page -- the only page you should be accessing while blocked -- to further discuss this with you. I strongly recommend that you abide by the block. I would not like to have to extend the block or to block your IP address, but I will if you continue to violate it. - Jmabel ! talk 18:02, 3 July 2023 (UTC)
I told David he should ask permission before uploading more art pictures in the future. I didnt meant for him to use his IP to bypass the block Trade (talk) 18:40, 3 July 2023 (UTC)
You do not upload to a category. You upload to Commons. In the Upload process you can (and should) add one or more categories to the file description. Categories can later be added or removed by you and by anyone. Files are not "considered". They are either free licensed and in scope or else get deleted. C.Suthorn (@Life_is@no-pony.farm) (talk) 18:06, 3 July 2023 (UTC)

Is an image with only a fragment (in this case a hand) of a person, cropped from a Flickr image licensed under a creative commons license (consent is *assumed*) acceptable? I'm referring to the first revision of File:Linishing.jpg; I uploaded it but now have concerns. Thanks, Edward-Woodrow (talk) 23:14, 3 July 2023 (UTC)

@Edward-Woodrow: I can't see anything there that even borders on being a problem. What are you concerned with? - Jmabel ! talk 00:36, 4 July 2023 (UTC)

Fixing multiple categories which should not have been moved

This isn't the most important thing in the world, but I wonder if I could have help tidying up (undoing misguided previous tidying by a since-banned user) regarding a number of U.S. w:NRHP-listed historic districts categories and their contents. (I thought this was going to be a bigger request, but it has come down to asking for help on just three.)

Background: The commons categories corresponding to w:Winnsboro Commercial Historic District and a number of other U.S. NRHP-listed historic districts of format "TOWN-OR-CITY Commercial Historic District" were, inexplicably, moved by User:Wikilester 2, a since-banned user blocked by User:Majora, back in 2018, to names of format "Commercial Historic District (TOWN-OR-CITY, STATE)". I see in their contributions history they made numerous other questionable moves, but for now I just want to fix the ones of this type.

Looking now at a list of most NRHP historic districts (using this NRHP-related external tool which covers NRHP listings up to 2013) with "Commercial Historic District" in their name, I see there are just two (in Potlatch, Idaho and in Pikeville, Kentucky) which were literally named "Central Historic District" so their Wikipedia articles and Commons categories should be of format "Commercial Historic District (TOWN-OR-CITY, STATE)". But there are hundreds of others of the "TOWN-OR-CITY Commercial Historic District" format, and their Wikipedia articles are that format name, too. Perhaps User:Wikilester 2 thought they were tidying things up nicely by making moves to what they thought were "correct" names, but their moves simply made a mess, IMHO, here and for other types of moves they made. It doesn't make sense to me for commons categories names of historic districts to be different than their Wikipedia names.

For example, corresponding to the uniquely named w:Winnsboro Commercial Historic District, the user moved commons category:Winnsboro Commercial Historic District to category:Commercial Historic District (Winnsboro, Louisiana), and a redirect was left behind. For that one, I just recategorized all the photos to use the original name, which is the actual literal name of the NRHP-listed historic district, and I tried "moving" the category but could not do that myself, and then instead I reversed the move by copy-pasting, and copy-pasted in the reverse redirect.

Request 1 & 2: I reviewed their contributions history and I would like to undo their other moves of this type, i.e.:

Request 3: I see that a similarly named editor User:Wikilester 3 (who has not been blocked?) is responsible for another:

After reviewing and making edits that I could make, now nothing needs to be done for:

Can the remaining three sets of moves/renames of categories and of their contents be done efficiently, somehow? I have "FileMover" rights but I myself cannot move these categories, and I don't know how to batch-recategorize their contents.

If these moves can be made in Commons, I can do all the corresponding updates of commons category links in Wikipedia.

--Doncram (talk) 23:46, 3 July 2023 (UTC)

@Doncram: In cases like this where you are moving all of the content of a category, use CommonsDelinker. As a non-admin, you can put in requests at User talk:CommonsDelinker. This will even move category itself, and moves both subcats and files. Only two provisos
  • If (as in some of these cases) you want to move to a category name that is currently a soft or hard redirect, delete the redirect first.
  • Use this only for changes that should be uncontroversial.
Unless I'm mistaken, as a filemover, you can't delete the category redirects. If you'll just make a list here of the category redirects you want deleted (the ones that will be the new categories), I'll delete those. You can ping me here to do those deletions, and to act immediately on your requests at User talk:CommonsDelinker. - Jmabel ! talk 00:49, 4 July 2023 (UTC)

User:Jmabel, thank you! Request put in at User talk:CommonsDelinker. --Doncram (talk) 01:01, 4 July 2023 (UTC)
@Doncram: If you want to do something like this again, please the instructions on that talk page about how to make a request, but I'll do my best to follow up from what you wrote. - Jmabel ! talk 01:07, 4 July 2023 (UTC)
Should go some time in the next few hours. - Jmabel ! talk 01:17, 4 July 2023 (UTC)
Thanks. The instructions there and at linked pages are terse, and/or I arrived with misunderstandings. I totally appreciate all of your help, but you did say "use CommonsDelinker", and "As a non-admin, you can put in requests at User talk:CommonsDelinker" while in fact I gather that instead I am supposed to put requests on the Talk pages of categories. Terseness there includes that they presume a requestor knows a "move" is a "rename" and also what Commons DeLinker does. At the first page I didn't see any mention of a "category move" there. I see now that I could have gone from there to find instructions for a "category rename", and that it amounts to making a bot request by putting, on the talk page of the category I want moved, a filled-out version of the template {{move cat|Old name|New name|3=Explanation|user=Your username}} I think it's not clearly stated that a category rename request has the effect of getting all the contents recategorized. I dunno if fulfillment of these requests also has the effect of updating Wikidata, and I don't care really, but maybe that could be mentioned. Copying this info to a page of mine, for future reference.
I just finished, knock on wood, making all the changes in Wikipedia of the commons category names.
So, lastly, could you please delete the related category redirects (and maybe you have to wait for three of these):
category:Commercial Historic District (Winnsboro, Louisiana)
Category:Commercial Historic District (Pipestone, Minnesota)
Category:Commercial Historic District (Patterson, Louisiana)
Category:Commercial Historic District (Ferriday, Louisiana)
Category:Commercial Historic District (Bremen, Indiana)
Category:Commercial Historic District (El Dorado, Arkansas)
Category:Commercial Historic District (Brunswick, Maine)
Thanks for everything! --Doncram (talk) 01:35, 4 July 2023 (UTC)
Usually we keep redirects like this that have been around for a few years so users who've been used to putting them on photos don't get taken by surprise. - Jmabel ! talk 02:32, 4 July 2023 (UTC)

Categories

What are the rules for categories that are basically empty on this wiki? I've came across a category that has two subcategories, one being itself. The category itself is also incorrectly categorised. --Ferien (talk) 21:00, 3 July 2023 (UTC)

@Ferien: So you've run across a mess. Care to say where? There are some maintenance categories that should be kept even if they are empty, but typically any category that is empty more than briefly should be deleted. - Jmabel ! talk 22:54, 3 July 2023 (UTC)
Jmabel, it's Category:Items numbered 3479. --Ferien (talk) 09:36, 4 July 2023 (UTC)
@Ferien: Categories can have few items or a single item if it fits into the category tree of the topic and if it's not overcategorization. When part of a particular series, categories tend to be exhaustive and not leave subcategories uncategorized. For the category you mentioned, the self-inclusion is the result of a mistake in the introductory template by the user who created the category. It can be fixed by removing the parameter "|nomi=bus routes" and that will also categorize the category in parent categories. -- Asclepias (talk) 11:11, 4 July 2023 (UTC)
Exactly. That self-inclusion was an error, but the category is not empty. It has subcats, which in turn contain images. - Jmabel ! talk 14:50, 4 July 2023 (UTC)
Alright. There's a rule on my homewiki that you must have three entries in a category and imo, categories with just one subcategory are generally fairly pointless so was checking here for what should be done with it. Thank you for fixing it. --Ferien (talk) 17:02, 4 July 2023 (UTC)

Can not upload new version of file. File:US timeline. Opioid deaths.jpg

See: File:US timeline. Opioid deaths.jpg - I am unable to upload the new version from the source:

Maybe someone else can try uploading the new version.

This file has been updated regularly, and is on many Wikipedia articles. I may have given up uploading a new version last year for the same reason. I don't remember. I was sick.

I think part of the problem today is this duplicate file that needs to be deleted:

--Timeshifter (talk) 18:50, 12 July 2023 (UTC)

@Timeshifter: I just did it, it worked fine. You just have to tell it to ignore the warning (about the duplicate) and upload anyway. - Jmabel ! talk 20:27, 12 July 2023 (UTC)
Thanks Jmabel. That's what I did earlier in the day here: File:US timeline. Number of overdose deaths from all drugs.jpg.
But for some reason I was not offered that option for the image this thread is about. The form kept ending up as a standard upload form. And it kept asking for all standard upload details when I tried using that form. Since the only info I provided was "Latest version" or something similar. I tried several times, and gave up.
My theory is that the software remembered my previous duplicate upload and blocked the attempt on a second file.
I put a {{Duplicate}} tag on File:2023-Drug-od-death-rates-1.jpg. --Timeshifter (talk) 22:19, 12 July 2023 (UTC)

How can I upload file (A short Bio article, formatted like similar Wikipedia article) on Wikipedia and not on Wikimedia? Thanks.

Dr. Zaverbhai H. Patel PhD. Quitesage (talk) 05:35, 6 July 2023 (UTC)

You cannot. Here at commons you can upload media files. If you have a text, it may qualify for wikibooks or wikiversity, but it is neither for Wikipedia nor for commons. On Wikipedia you can write and edit new and existing articles. For your own use you can export arcticles from Wikipedia as PDF-file. But it does not make sense to upload a text, that already exists at Wikipedia. — Preceding unsigned comment added by C.Suthorn (talk • contribs) 08:03, 6 July 2023‎ (UTC)

Batch overwriting a recent batch upload

Hi all, I'm in touch with people from a cultural organization which has recently done a small-ish batch upload here on Wikimedia Commons. They accidentally uploaded quite small files (their uploads of 2 and 3 May 2023, specifically), and they would like to batch overwrite these with the high-quality/large version. I understood that a script would be needed for this, as there are no tools (eg Pattypan, OpenRefine) that allow overwriting files in batch like this. What would the procedure be for this organization? Is this a good place to ask for this help? (I've asked @Multichill in person, and have also started asking on Telegram - but having this conversation documented on wiki is a good way to document the procedure for future occurrences!) Thank you! Spinster (talk) 10:25, 6 July 2023 (UTC)

Would Pywikibot be a suitable tool for this? --Zentralbibliothek Zürich (talk) 11:14, 6 July 2023 (UTC) ^anw
There are several available tools, mostly depending on technical competences and how is your metadata (database, spreadsheet files, plain text files, etc.). After trying OpenRefine, I chose Pywikibot, as the metadata I use is rather plain text than a database. Pywikibot can be run from a local PC or from a Toolforge account. Yann (talk) 11:29, 6 July 2023 (UTC)
With reuploads the "description" part of the upload is ignored by the MW software, so any upload tool that can do reuplaods will be fine (basically the tool only needs to have a switch to ignore warnings). C.Suthorn (@Life_is@no-pony.farm) (talk) 11:35, 6 July 2023 (UTC)

We use Wikipedia on government sites, but don't have a copy of Template:Ordered list, and when I try to view it, it's semi-protected. Is there a way to view/download the template? The copy we have only contains the list-style-type|decimal. Thanks! Jbkalla (talk) 12:38, 6 July 2023 (UTC)

The page Template:Ordered list is just
 {{<includeonly>safesubst:</includeonly>#invoke:list|ordered}}<noinclude>
 {{documentation}}
<!-- Categories go on the /doc subpage, and interwikis go on Wikidata. -->
 </noinclude>
So there's really not much to it. - Jmabel ! talk 14:46, 6 July 2023 (UTC)

Copyright help regarding File:Blm-maduro.jpg

Hello I just uploaded the same picture and was able to get the original author (Embassy of Venezuela to the United States), as well as website. I don't know how to do licensing or what to write down, in regards to giving credit to the Embassy of Venezuela to the United States. Please help me. Thank you. --Arobinson1987 (talk) 13:34, 6 July 2023 (UTC)

@Arobinson1987: why do you believe this image is either in the public domain or free-licensed? Commons only accepts images that meet one of those two criteria. - Jmabel ! talk 14:48, 6 July 2023 (UTC)
I believe it's public domain, because on the flickr link it states that the viewing privacy is "public". Arobinson1987 (talk) 14:58, 6 July 2023 (UTC)
Could you link to the Flickr page that gives information on the photograph? I can't check the license for the current source link provided. Abzeronow (talk) 16:28, 6 July 2023 (UTC)
I suppose it is this photo, all rights reserved. -- Asclepias (talk) 16:51, 6 July 2023 (UTC)
Yeah, I speedied it. @Arobinson1987: if a Flickr page says All Rights Reserved, we normally cannot host those here. Abzeronow (talk) 16:58, 6 July 2023 (UTC)
@Arobinson1987: being publicly visible is not the same as being in the public domain! Otherwise, everything you see on the Internet would be in the public domain. I strongly recommend you read public domain before uploading any other work that is not something you yourself created, or you are really likely to get yourself in trouble. - Jmabel ! talk 17:59, 6 July 2023 (UTC)
Thank you for letting me know. Arobinson1987 (talk) 18:15, 6 July 2023 (UTC)

Updating incorrect image

I am trying to update an image which is incorrectly displayed. The TNSG TN Defense Service Ribbon (https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:TNSG_TN_Defense_Service_Ribbon.jpg) is incorrectly displayed in accordance with the regulations of the TNSG. It is flipped and the correct orientation should be blue, white, red. However, on the file it says it cannot be overwritten. Uploading images

Hello, Flickr was listed as one of the resources to be used to find images that can then be used on Commons. Is every image on the website in the public domain and therefore exempt from fair use? I assumed so, but several images I have posted to Commons from Flickr have been deleted because of this. Also screenshots from YouTube videos; if a channel can upload a video that is under copyright, why can't an image be screenshot from the video, cropped and then posted on Wikipedia Commons? Or is it just a matter of not inputing enough information whenever I go to upload photos? ZanderAlbatraz1145 (talk) 06:18, 6 July 2023 (UTC)

Flickr displays the license of every image on Flickr together with the image. If the Flickr user has choosen a free license, you can upload it to Commons, otherwise not. YouTube lets uploaders choose between two licenses: The standard YouTuobe license and a free Creative Commnons license. If it is the Creative Commons license you can upload the video or a derivative work ot the video or screenshots from the video, otherwise not. C.Suthorn (@Life_is@no-pony.farm) (talk) 07:59, 6 July 2023 (UTC)
How do you tell if the user has chosen a 'free license' for the image? On Flickr, one of the images I had previously uploaded has an All Rights Reserved tag, as well as the Rights number listed in the description. At the bottom, it also says the Viewing Privacy is Public and the 'Safety Level' is 'Safe'. Does that mean anything to you? Or, again, is it just a matter of me failing to input that information when initially uploading the photo. ZanderAlbatraz1145 (talk) 06:18, 6 July 2023 (UTC)
@ZanderAlbatraz1145: The tag, right under the photo zone, tells the status of the photo. For details, see the page Commons:Flickr files. "All rights reserved" is not a free license. -- Asclepias (talk) 17:27, 7 July 2023 (UTC)
The only relevance of Flickr's 'Viewing Privacy' and 'Safety Level' to us is that our tools to upload from Flickr can only see photos that are 'Public' and 'Safe'. 'Viewing Privacy' = 'Public' means and 'Safety Level' = 'Safe' just means any Flickr user (logged in or not) can see the image on Flickr; not limited to a specific viewership, and not limited by the "safety" settings that let logged-in users choose to see nude and sexual images. - Jmabel ! talk 18:28, 7 July 2023 (UTC)

Creating my page

I am new to this site. I am 88 years of age. My questions are:

1. How to enter my bio information to appear at this site? 2. During COVID I wrote a book of poetry and some country music songs. The book was published and some of the songs were recorded in Franklin/Nashville, TN. How do I show those accomplishments at this site?

The book and all songs I have written are copy-written and I am the exclusive owner. Evidence of that is available if you need it.

Thanks Southernsound (talk) 18:59, 7 July 2023 (UTC)

@Southernsound: Short version: it sounds like you intend to use this site for self-promotion which is not allowed.
Just in case you are not aware, "this site" is Wikimedia Commons, a media repository (not a collection of biographies or other articles). We don't have "articles" on any topic, unless you count the pages about our own policies, guidelines, etc.
In case you were thinking of the English-language Wikipedia, our sister project, this wouldn't be welcome there either. If you want an explanation of why not, see en:WP:AUTOBIOGRAPHY and en:WP:COI. - Jmabel ! talk 22:33, 7 July 2023 (UTC)

This file: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edward_Taylor_(music_writer)#/media/File:Edward_Taylor_(1784-1863).jpg

Wrongly used images online

Hello! When someone uses my images from Wikimedia Commons, licensed CC-BY-SA 4.0, but fails to credit my name or link to / write the license, can I send them an invoice for it or raise other legal actions? What does Commons do to reduce wrong use of images? If I don't even get credited as the photographer, and people use the photos just like they've taken them, it really reduces my motivation to keep on contributing. @Genabab: Commons doesn't accept fair use content of any type per COM:FAIR; so, you wouldn't be allowed to be uploaded such content here. Some local Wikipedia's, however, do allow fair use content to be uploaded and used, but usually it's subject to quite a lot of restrictions, which are even more restrictive in many cases than fair use. Suggestion

It would be helpful if there is a button with each image that can filter out images that require attribution. I reuse images in videos, and so there is no easy way to give credit. If when I put in a search term, I can filter out everything except those things that say "attribution not required," it would make content creation faster and easier. Then I would be sure that the images that came up in the search are free to use in a video or in a venue where it is difficult or or "clunky-looking" to give a credit link. As it is, I have to go through the images image-by-image and check the credit requirement. I don't know the technology involved in doing that, but if it is possible, it would make searching a whole lot easier. Thank you. 75.111.219.108 14:53, 9 July 2023 (UTC)

You are a bit of an edge case in looking only for images that do not require credits. And, also: this is at least partly about you staying technically legal while ignoring all courtesy requests for credit by institutional providers of PD images (e.g. museums, archives, etc.). I personally can't see us going out of our way to help someone do that. - Jmabel ! talk 16:40, 9 July 2023 (UTC)
It is just as easy giving credits on a video as it is giving credit other places you would use the image. Regards Vasmar1 | Marius Vassnes (talk) 19:24, 9 July 2023 (UTC)
@Vasmar1: no, it is actually harder in a video. Adding titles is a pain in the butt. But it's really not our (Commons') job to solve a problem like that. People have all sorts of special-case criteria on what licenses (or even which PD justifications) work well for them and what don't, and solving this for them is not a role we've taken on, any more than walking them through trademark issues. - Jmabel ! talk 00:51, 10 July 2023 (UTC)
@Jmabel: I disagree. I have been doing video-editing for some years too, and it's not really "a pain in the butt". Do it one time and use that as a template for the rest of the video. Some editing programs also have already made templates, ie. for giving photo-credit. I agree with the part that it's not something Commons is supposed to help with either way, and IMO a photo should always be credited. Sub-categories

In uploading an image, how do I add a sub-category to the list of categories? Bmzuckerman (talk) 21:09, 9 July 2023 (UTC)

@Bmzuckerman: From the list of your contributions, I guess you have been trying to create a new category, named "Hamilton Web Company" or "Hamilton web company". If so, 1) go to one place where you wrote that red category link, for example your list of contributions, or add that red category link again to one of your files, 2) click on that red link, 3) in the edit box, insert the links to the parent categories of which your new category should be a member, for example Category:Textile mills in Rhode Island, 4) preview, 5) publish, 6) add the new category to the relevant files. You can see the page Commons:Categories for details. If that's no what your question was about, then please specify with an example. -- Asclepias (talk) 21:56, 9 July 2023 (UTC)
Thanks, Asclepias, for your prompt assistance. While following your tips, I succeeded in creating a new category for "Hamilton Web Company." However that did not show up where I really want it -- as a sub-category listing at the top of an existing category, such as "Textile Mills in Rhode Island." Further advice? Bmzuckerman (talk) 22:35, 9 July 2023 (UTC)
Edit the page of the new "Category:Hamilton Web Company" and format the links to the parent categories in double brackets, for example: [[Category:Textile mills in Rhode Island]]. Use the exact name, for example note the lowercase in the word "mills" in that category. Also, please revert your edit [2] to "Category:Textile mills in Rhode Island". It's the other way around. -- Asclepias (talk) 23:18, 9 July 2023 (UTC)

Hi, I need to update the logo on the Findus page, since the one present is an old one and the company wants to update it. I have the logo the company gave me, how can I update it? Utente 1089 (talk) 15:51, 10 July 2023 (UTC)

  • @Utente 1089: I'm assuming by "the Findus page" you mean en:Findus.
  • If the new logo is below the threshold of originality you can upload it to Commons using {{Textlogo}} and {{Trademarked}} in lieu of a license template. If it's above the threshold, then the only way Commons can accept it is if the company will grant a free license (which most companies will not); see COM:L if you want to know more about that, and COM:VRT for how they could provide the license to Commons. In any case, please use a different filename from the current logo, which we would want to keep for historical reasons.
  • Failing either of those, you could upload the logo (again, under a new filename) directly to the English-language Wikipedia on a fair-use basis (we don't allow this on Commons). See en:File:Starbucks Corporation Logo 2011.svg for a good example of how this is done.
  • In any case, once you've done that, edit en:Findus to use the new logo.
  • Also: please see en:WP:COI. It sounds like you are editing the English-language Wikipedia (en-wiki) on a topic where you have an undisclosed connection to the subject of the article. You need to declare that connection, or en-wiki will probably block your account. - Jmabel ! talk 18:05, 10 July 2023 (UTC)

@Mayfair Rose: When something like this happens, the best thing to do tends to be to retrace your steps and look for the edit that introduced the error. Most like you accidentally edited the template's syntax and that's causing it to not work as intended. Either you added something that's not needed and the template doesn't know what to do with it, or you removed something that is needed and the template can't find it. If you unable to find the problematic edit, you can revert all of the ones you made back to the last stable version, and try and make the same edit again. -- Marchjuly (talk) 00:55, 11 July 2023 (UTC)
Thanks for your help. I reverted my edits and will try to figure out how to insert my comment so it doesn't break the template. Mayfair Rose (talk) 01:44, 11 July 2023 (UTC)

Handling duplicate files post cropping

I cropped an image that I imported from youtube (under the share license) but decided to upload the cropped image as a new separate file (as I thought I needed to keep the source file for verification purposes). Now I have two files, instead of one embedded inside the other.

Should I propose the original file for deletion (and what kind of deletion), OR can they be merged? The file in question is "File:Ueli Steck Les Drus "North Couloir Direct" (VI, Al 6+, M8) 1.png" (original), and "File:Ueli Steck Les Drus "North Couloir Direct" (VI, Al 6+, M8) 1 (cropped).png" (cropped). thanks. Convenience links: File:Ueli Steck Les Drus "North Couloir Direct" (VI, Al 6+, M8) 1.png, File:Ueli Steck Les Drus "North Couloir Direct" (VI, Al 6+, M8) 1 (cropped).png - Jmabel ! talk 21:14, 10 July 2023 (UTC)
I personally wouldn't bother doing anything: just use the version you want; the other is harmless. But if you like, you can download the full-res image from File:Ueli Steck Les Drus "North Couloir Direct" (VI, Al 6+, M8) 1 (cropped).png, then upload it as a new version of File:Ueli Steck Les Drus "North Couloir Direct" (VI, Al 6+, M8) 1.png, then nominate File:Ueli Steck Les Drus "North Couloir Direct" (VI, Al 6+, M8) 1 (cropped).png for deletion. - Jmabel ! talk 21:18, 10 July 2023 (UTC)
In this particular case, the uncropped image does not seem useful. You could nominate it for deletion. Or you could leave it. It's not really important. There is no general rule. In other types of situations, it may be different. In some cases, it can be useful to have both images as separate files. In some other cases, it may be useful to upload the original and then overwrite it with the modified version. It depends on the specifics of each situation. I don't think there's any interest to take the time of an admin to merge those two files. -- Asclepias (talk) 21:28, 10 July 2023 (UTC)
The one useful thing about the uncropped version is that the time thing at the bottom serves as documentation for where in the video the still was pulled from. - Jmabel ! talk 23:02, 10 July 2023 (UTC)
Okay, I will leave both versions in place which seems like the consensus advice. Thanks for all your help on this. Aszx5000 (talk) 11:24, 11 July 2023 (UTC)
@Aszx5000: If you want to group both versions in the same file, you can still do it with the method mentioned above by Jmabel, overwriting the original version with the cropped version and nominating the other cropped file for deletion. There is one day left for a request for speedy deletion with G7. After that, it can be an ordinary deletion request. -- Asclepias (talk) 12:33, 11 July 2023 (UTC)

copyvio

why is this a copyvio [3] and [4]??--Ozzie10aaaa (talk) 11:58, 11 July 2023 (UTC)

If the images are indeed in PD, there needs to be a correct license tag used. {{CC0}} is only used for images the copyright owner releases to PD. For works that were produced as an official duty of a government employee, PD is automatically assumed, unless stated otherwise or originating from a country that copyrights government works, for which a different license tag is used. Somebody stated that the image source claims copyright and doesn't allow reusing the photo freely, in your talk page, which you swiftly reverted, but kind of forgot that the history is publicly visible. Polda18 D C 12:26, 11 July 2023 (UTC)
@Ozzie10aaaa: It's not a copyvio, but it's not offered under a CC0 declaration, so it cannot be tagged with a CC0 template. There may be a PD template somewhere for PD CDC journals like this, but I didn't find one with a quick search. There's a CDC template for works of US employees and a template for images from the CDC image library, but they don't do for this. If there is no specific template, you can always use the general template PD-because, and quote in the parameter the PD statement of the journal: "All materials published in Emerging Infectious Diseases, including text, figures, tables, and photographs, are in the public domain and can be reprinted or used without permission with proper citation.[5]". And you can request a license review. -- Asclepias (talk) 13:07, 11 July 2023 (UTC)

Google SOE

Is there some kind of systemic blockage between a Google search and WikiMedia Commons? I ask because I'm disappointed that the two sets of photos that I recently uploaded to our category of "Textile mills in Rhode Island" do not appear in a Google search for the identical category. In fact, of the hundreds of images that appear when you search Google for "Textile mills in Rhode Island," only three of them (all of the Slater Mill Historic Site) come from WikiMedia Commons -- that is, only three of the 155 images in this WikiMedia category show up in a Google search. Any tips on how to get Google to pay attention to images uploaded to WikiMedia Commons? Bmzuckerman (talk) 20:01, 11 July 2023 (UTC)

Upload updated photo

Hello, I'd like to upload an updated photo on a Wikipedia page NyamburaM (talk) 17:40, 11 July 2023 (UTC)

You do not upload files at Wikipedia. You upload at commons.wikimedia (this site). Which foto do you want to update? It may be a case to upload a new revision, but it is more likely a new foto with a different name. Once it is uploaded (and description and copyright are ok) you can replace it in the article in Wikipedia. C.Suthorn (@Life_is@no-pony.farm) (talk) 19:52, 11 July 2023 (UTC)
@NyamburaM and C.Suthorn: Just as a note, files can be uploaded directly to Wikipedia instead of to Commons (this website). This is often necessary for non-free images. QuickQuokka [talkcontribs] 10:19, 12 July 2023 (UTC)
It is only necessary for non-free images. But in this case: If the existing image is non-free and at en.wp it does not make sense to add another non-free image. And a free-license image belongs to commons. (Bassically also en.wp should not use non-free images. Either don't use the image at all or make an external link to the image) C.Suthorn (@Life_is@no-pony.farm) (talk) 10:57, 12 July 2023 (UTC)
@C.Suthorn: you write, "Bassically [sic] also en.wp should not use non-free images." Meaning this is your personal belief? Fine, then, but not really useful information for a new user on a help desk. Or meaning that you believe this is en-wp policy? en-wp is quite clear on when non-free images are and are not permitted, and their rule is certainly not an absolute ban. (Just to be clear to the original poster: my remarks here are strictly about uploading directly to en-wp. Do NOT upload non-free images on Commons.) - Jmabel ! talk 13:50, 12 July 2023 (UTC)

Can I remove the warning tag?

This and some other files I recently uploaded have a CC Public Domain Mark 1.0 tag on the files. I had put the PDM tag in the wrong location and later moved it to the license section. Can I now remove the license warning tag? See here: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:НАТО_Самит_2023,_Вилнус_-_Литванија_(11-12.07.2023)_-_53038365976.jpg Thanks, -- Ooligan (talk) 07:18, 13 July 2023 (UTC)

@Ooligan: You can remove the orange warning tag, although that will not validate that file. You attributed it to the wrong entity. Given that this flickr account is not the original source nor the owner of the copyright, it cannot mark the photo as public domain, unless the owner of the copyright, which is NATO (see exif), has released it in the public domain. Evidence of it must be provided. You should look if you can find the original source and check the copyright status. If it is not free, it must be deleted. If it is free, it would still be better to delete this file and upload the photo from the original source of the owner of the copyright. Uploading from a secondary source complicates the verification of the status. -- Asclepias (talk) 11:52, 13 July 2023 (UTC)
For information, the photos on the nato website are not free [6] and the photos on the nato flickr account are non-commercial [7]. With a quick look, I didn't find this photo in those places but, for consistency with their copyright policy, it should probably be assumed that this photo is not free, unless evidence is found that nato officially released it as free. -- Asclepias (talk) 18:40, 13 July 2023 (UTC)

@Adilalishah: It would help if you can give the URL. "open to public access" doesn't mean anything, as most of the Internet is "open to public access". 2. Gehe mit dem Cursor auf das Leerzeichen nach File
  3. Lösche die nächste fünf Zeichen
  4. Enter

@PupAngel: I see you successfully uploaded File:Judges Badges from 2014 Oregon Puppy Contest..jpg. Are you saying that some other photo would not upload? If so, I'm guessing you were trying a cross-wiki upload, which has a lot of filters. See if you can upload it with Commons:UploadWizard.
Also, when you say "made by Pounder": if someone other than you made the badges, then they hold the copyright on the badges, and your photo is a derivative work. The badge-designer will need to go through the process described at COM:VRT.
Also -- and I hate to have so many caveats -- have you read, and are you complying with en:WP:COI? I'd hate to see you blocked on the English-language Wikipedia for going against their rules. - Jmabel ! talk 15:26, 14 July 2023 (UTC)
I am talking about a different photo, thanks for asking. I'll see about the upload wizard.

Commons and wiki-data item issue

Please help me fix this issue here Category:Kriti Sanon regarding the wiki-data item. It says there is some issue regarding the linking of the wiki-data item and I tried linking it again but its the same. 456legend (talk) 10:39, 14 July 2023 (UTC)

It might be because the relevant Wikidata item is already linked to the relevant gallery page here on Commons. You'd need to create a new item or find another item that is created for the category. Looking at the main WD item, it does have a Commons category linked, but I don't think it works that way. I placed the WD infobox on the gallery page, I believe that was the intended use of the infobox. Category page is literally just for categorizing other categories, pages, and files. Gallery page (main namespace) are reserved for basic info and manual listing of files for the topic the gallery page covers. Polda18 D C 11:18, 14 July 2023 (UTC)
@456legend and Polda18: I've stitched it together for you. It's a little tricky when there is a gallery page: you need to create a distinct Wikidata item for the category, then link them with category's main topic (P301) and topic's main category (P910). - Jmabel ! talk 17:04, 14 July 2023 (UTC)

How to move my post from the common page to the Wiki Loves Heritage competition page?

Hi, I have uploaded my photos in the wrong page - how can I move them to the Competition page instead? When I try to upload into the competition page, I had an error message saying that it was a duplicate image, eventhough I had tried changing the name of the new file. Please help. Thanks. NyonyaLee888 (talk) 11:49, 14 July 2023 (UTC)

@NyonyaLee888: Hi, You only need to modify the description pages of your files, to add one or more templates and categories that relate specifically to the particular competition and country. You can look at photos uploaded by other users for the same competition and copy the relevant templates and categories. You can also request help on the talk page of the competition. Your question above is not telling what country, does not link to a specific competition page and your files don't include categories, so there are no obvious clues for us. After searching for some time, I guess you may refer to Commons:Wiki Loves Living Heritage in Singapore. If so, the talk page is Commons talk:Wiki Loves Living Heritage in Singapore. If you need more help, please be more specific. -- Asclepias (talk) 13:15, 14 July 2023 (UTC)

I have an old photo of Trev Thoms circa 1972, when he was in a band in Switzerland called Mannheim. I don't have the negatives as someone else took the photo and sent it to me on a postcard. It's not the greatest of pics as Trev was feeling sick at the time. I also have another photo circa 1975 - 6, which Trev took himself featuring P Reeves and A Wyden as well. Football Kit Creation

How do I create football kits? Is there a template I can use or must I create a page? How is it done? Soccerking.greg127 (talk) 20:12, 14 July 2023 (UTC)

Hi @Soccerking.greg127: welcome to Commons and sorry for the delay in getting back to you. I haven't produced a kit myself, but this is probably how I would go about it. There are various templates at Category:Football kit templates. Specifically, by going through the sub-categories, to Category:SVG association football kit templates. This is because SVG is recommended for diagrams such as these. SVG graphics can be edited with a free software application called Inkscape - see Help:Inkscape. Inkscape can look complicated but it is fairly straightforward to pick up - there are tutorials on the previous link. If you use a particular template to base your design on as a derivative work remember to give appropriate credit as/if required. Lastly, further help on this may be possible from Commons:Graphics village pump. Hope this gets you started. All the best. - FotoFree (talk) 08:50, 16 July 2023 (UTC)

Problems to iframe embed with Wikimedia Commons videos

Please fix this as soon as possible. RuinDig (talk) 16:56, 15 July 2023 (UTC)

You cannot embed pages (including file description pages) from wikipedia in an iframe. Probably there is no exception for video pages with emnbedded video player. You can hotlink to the video file from you iframe, or you could call your own videoplayer within the iframe and add a hotlink to the video file as a parameter for the video file. you can use the video player from wikimedia, it is FOSS, so you are allowed to use it at your website. The iframe code option have on Wikimedia Commons video pages have had for a long time. Previously, the video could be played properly. However, this time the embed video is not playing picture due to an anomaly on the video player, and I'm asking for a fix.
You can get embed code from "Use this file on the web" -> "Embed this file" -> Select HTML option

Deletion requests unattended for two months

Three deletion requests for voice files uploaded by me have been left unattended for almost two months.

I'm unsure if this is because I made errors in complying with the standard deletion request, but whatever the case, I hope for assistance here if this is the right place to ask. These files are from C-SPAN website, where coverage of floor activity of the U.S. House of Representatives and U.S. Senate is in the public domain (thus available for Commons), but coverage of hearings is not. This is why I asked for deletion of these files in relation to copyright.

However, these hearings on the Iran-Contra affair were filmed in 1987, which may qualify them for the Template:PD-US-1978-89 (I don't see any registers for these on the U.S. Copyright Office website) - but I can't be sure until the deletion requests receive outside input. Since I can't remove the requests without them being closed, another reason to ask for help here. Many thanks. SuperWIKI (talk) 07:40, 16 July 2023 (UTC)

Hi SuperWIKI. Since there tends to be many more deletion requests than there are Commons administrators working to close them, it often can take quite a bit of time for a request to be formally closed. You can ask for an administrator to take a look at these by posting a message at COM:AN, but sometimes you just have to wait. Since you basically nominated your own uploads for deletion, and you're the only person who's commented in the DRs so far, an administrator might consider the deletion non-contentious and do so asap. -- Marchjuly (talk) 10:50, 16 July 2023 (UTC)

How to get copyrighted images removed

Hello, there are three images by the photographer Sam Tata on Wikimedia Commons that are under copyright and should be removed. Two are of the guitarist Michael Laucke and one is called Rooftop Watchers (which I uploaded when I had less understanding of copyright. At the time I thought Canadian photographs before 1949 were allowed). The photographer Sam Tata died in 2005 and his estate retains copyright until the year 2075. Can these images please be removed? Curiocurio (talk) 15:47, 16 July 2023 (UTC)

For reference, File:Rooftop Watchers Sino-Japanese War 1937 Shanghai.jpg is the Rooftop Watchers one. The Michael Laucke ones are File:Michael Laucke - Wigmore Hall London England - Sam Tata Photo.jpg, File:Michael Laucke ~ Photo By Renowned Photographer Sam Tata.jpg, and File:Michael Laucke ~ In His Studio In Montreal, Photo By Sam Tata.jpg Abzeronow (talk) 16:03, 16 July 2023 (UTC)
EDIT: For what its worth, Alamy says the Shanghai photograph is public domain. https://www.alamy.com/stock-image-rooftop-watchers-sino-japanese-war-1937-shanghai-166283969.html?irclickid=VZMUVSW75xyNWl5V3Sz9P1sNUkFzMrXRRyFsyw0&utm_source=77643&utm_campaign=Shop%20Royalty%20Free%20at%20Alamy&utm_medium=impact&irgwc=1 If the Shanghai photograph is a Canadian photograph, it would be public domain. If it was first published in a different country, then it may be still in copyright. Abzeronow (talk) 16:15, 16 July 2023 (UTC)
Hello, All non-Crown photos taken before 1949, from anywhere in the world, are in the public domain in Canada. Many non-Crown Canadian photos taken before 1946 are actually ok for Commons, as they are also in the public domain in the United States, provided that they were first published in Canada early enough and without the notices and renewals required by U.S. copyright. They may be under copyright in the United Sates if one of those conditions is not met. So, it depends on each case. Photos taken by Tata as an employee of the NFB and published before 1973 are probably in the public domain in Canada as expired Crown copyright (example), but maybe not in the U.S. because of the URAA, although they might be accepted on Commons depending on who you ask. Tata immigrated to Canada in 1956, so his earlier works were probably first published in another country. The Rooftop Watchers 1937 photo, as a photo taken before 1949, is in the public domain in Canada, but for Commons it is probably not a Canadian photo and the Comons tag PD-Canada would not apply to it, unless there is evidence that it was first published in Canada. Three of the photos of Laucke taken by Tata, linked above, look like they were taken and published circa 1980. Another photo of Laucke, File:Guitarist Michael Laucke 2011.jpg, attributed to Tata by Laucke on flickr, was published in 2001 [8] [9]. They were used for promotion and likely commissioned, by Laucke or by someone else. Laucke's statement, when he dedicated the photos to the public domain, is that the copyright on those photos was owned by himself. Which, if the photos were commissioned by him, was probably true when the photos were taken and published, because at that time section 13 paragraph 2 of the Canadian Copyright Act [10] attributed by default the copyright ownwership to the person who commissioned the photos, not to the photographer, unless the parties specified otherwise in a contract. An amendment to the Copyright Act in 2012 abrogated that paragraph, but that amendment was not retroactive on that point (section 60 in the transitional provisions [11]). Assuming that Laucke commissioned the photos and owned the copyright, which is what he stated, his dedication of those photos to the public domain is valid. The OTRS (VRT) ticket 2015100510004243 confirmed Laucke's identity. You can nominate files for deletion if you want, but please be specific about the reason applicable to a file if you nominate it. -- Asclepias (talk) 17:22, 16 July 2023 (UTC)

Michael, you have uploaded a floorplan, a photo of an unidentified man, and another floor plan. These all have inaccurate or obscure names and descriptions. It seems like you're confused about what Commons is and you're trying to use this site for hosting a resume. Is that correct? Replacing a sub-optimal file

In seeking to replace a sub-optimal file, I clicked on "upload a new version of this file." However, it is not intuitively obvious to me what to do on the page that that brings up. Can someone give me specific directions? Bmzuckerman (talk) 21:24, 17 July 2023 (UTC)

@Bmzuckerman: it's relatively unlikely that "upload a new version of this file" is what you want to do, anyway: see COM:OVERWRITE for why, but the short version is that unless you were the original uploader of that file, it is only for uncontroversial technical improvements.
I'm guessing from what you write (you aren't giving a lot of detail, you don't even say what file this is about) you have a new photo you think is better than another for some Wikipedia article. Just upload it like any other new photo; then (assuming it is pretty uncontroversially better) edit the article to use your photo instead.
If I've misunderstood what you are actually asking, please feel free to leave a more detailed question. - Jmabel ! talk 22:18, 17 July 2023 (UTC)
To be more specific, I’ve been on a learning curve in uploading my architectural photos. I’ve learned to create better images than some of the ones I’ve already uploaded. After uploading the better images, I’d like to delete the “sub-optimal“ ones. Hence my question. 2601:8A:4100:ECC0:5077:5610:B1DA:1590 02:16, 18 July 2023 (UTC)
If it is literally better post-processing on the same photo, which you took, then it's OK to overwrite. (I did that just yesterday myself with File:Georgetown PowerPlant Museum - hopper room - 2023-07-15 -03.jpg.) And if it's less than seven days old and isn't in use, you can get it deleted by putting {{SD|G7}} on the file page. But if it's a different photo: you already granted an irrevocable license when you uploaded, and the seven-day grace period has gone by, so you can't unilaterally take it down. You can nominate it for deletion (just like anyone else can), but usually that won't be granted. We tend to want to keep most photos, especially because we don't know what third parties may have used them (including making a deep link into our site).
By the way: I presume that latest remark was by User:Bmzuckerman. You probably should log in when you post here. Otherwise, among other things, you are announcing your IP address to the world. - Jmabel ! talk 02:24, 18 July 2023 (UTC)
Thanks for the go-ahead to replace some of my recently uploaded photos with better post-processing versions. But back to my original question, I’d appreciate some specific directions on how to “overwrite” (i.e., delete) the sub-optimal versions.
Thanks, also, for the tip on logging in. Bmzuckerman (talk) 02:40, 18 July 2023 (UTC)
@Bmzuckerman: You click "upload a new version of this file". That should bring up a page rather like Special:Upload but specific to this file name as a target. You use the "Browse" button to select the updated file from your disk. Then you briefly describe the file changes (e.g. "color levels adjusted", "contrast increased", "slight rotate & crop; more saturated", or "perspective corrected"), and click "Upload". - Jmabel ! talk 04:41, 18 July 2023 (UTC)
Following your instructions worked up to a point. I succeeded in replacing the sub-optimal photo with a better one. However, since I’d previously loaded that better photo, I’ve now ended up with two images. How do I delete the second one? Bmzuckerman (talk) 15:05, 18 July 2023 (UTC)
@Bmzuckerman: mark it with {{Duplicate}} - Jmabel ! talk 18:28, 18 July 2023 (UTC)
Where, precisely? Bmzuckerman (talk) 21:16, 18 July 2023 (UTC)
@Bmzuckerman: anywhere on the file page; the top is probably typical. - Jmabel ! talk 22:23, 18 July 2023 (UTC)
While I appreciate your ongoing assistance, I’m afraid that your directions need to be a bit more idiot-proof. Specifically, when I opened the duplicate file that I wish to delete, I couldn’t find anywhere near the top to enter {{duplicate}}. Rather, the only places where I found the option to type in something were: (1)The “Add a note” box — which didn’t seem relevant; and 2) the “Categories” box at the bottom. Taking a gander at the latter, I typed in {{duplicate}} to no apparent effect. I then typed in Template:Duplicate and the name of the file that I wish to retain. That produced the following message:
”This file is an exact duplicate or scaled-down version of: [[:File:]]
There should be only one exact copy of a file.
After replacing all instances with the preferred file, this file will be speedily deleted.”
Since I see no sign of this file being “speedily deleted,” what steps do I need to take to make that happen? Bmzuckerman (talk) 21:32, 19 July 2023 (UTC)
@Bmzuckerman: Now you have me confused. You say "when I opened the duplicate file". We don't have any action here called "opening" a file so I'm not sure what you did. I intended you to use "Edit", the same way you are presumably editing here. Since at no point have you said here what files you are talking about, I can't just go do this myself. Is this about File:Hamilton Web Co. (3).jpg? I see in your contribution history that you did something of the sort there, but I can't quite decipher what file you are saying that is a duplicate of. If you can tell me that (just provide a link) I can follow through.
I have to quit for the night now, so I don't have time to fully explain but besides what I just wrote: when I wrote "{{Duplicate}}" above (and again here), I take it that you didn't recognize that as a template with a link (click on it) to see how to use the template. Sorry: I was presuming you were familiar with wiki templates, but I take it that you are very new to all of this, which I didn't know. - Jmabel ! talk 04:38, 20 July 2023 (UTC)

List of governors of Portuguese India in Portuguese - unable to load picture

I am trying to prepare a talk based on this list which, in the Portuguese but not the English version, includes portraits of the majority of the governors. My starting point was Lopo Vaz de Sampaio (Sampaio) (listed as 6th governor in English version and 8th version in Portuguese version). In this list there is no picture of him. There are pictures of him in Wikipedia articles on him (different pictures in English and Portuguese versions) but not in the listing where there is a message saying file under preparation. I have tried to upload a picture of him from Wikipedia Commons but get a message saying I am not authorised. What can I do? Milbern (talk) 00:53, 10 July 2023 (UTC)

@Milbern: I assume this is about pt:Lista de governadores da Índia Portuguesa. And are we talking about File:Lopo Vaz de Sampaio (Archaeological Survey of India, Goa).png or some other photo? Milbern, when you ask a question like this you have a lot better chance to get help if you link the things you are talking about. - Jmabel ! talk 01:07, 10 July 2023 (UTC)
Thank you so much. I appreciate being able to refer people to the Wikipedia list and the person with whom I started my talk being in there as opposed to them being the only one missing in the first twenty.
I would still like to know how to do things like this myself. Is there a simple guide somewhere?
And thanks again. Milbern (talk) 15:13, 11 July 2023 (UTC)
I see what happened. In pt:Lista de governadores da Índia Portuguesa you said you want File:Lopo_Vaz_de_Sampaio.jpg, but there is no such file! You have to use the name of a file that actually exists. - Jmabel ! talk 01:15, 10 July 2023 (UTC)
Thanks for the quick response. Sorry. I don't have a clue what I'm doing and I've never tried this before. The list in Portuguese contains portraits of many of the governors. Where there should be a portrait of him there is a box that contains File:Lopo_Vaz_de_Sampaio.jpg. I only clicked on it in the list. I'm not trying to upload a file by that name. I'm just clicking on what is there. If it is not something that exists, why is it there at all? The file that I want to upload is his official 16th Century portrait which appears on his Portuguese Wikipedia page as File:Lopo Vaz de Sampaio (Archaeological Survey of India, Goa).png. as you correctly identified. I thought I had clicked on it and got a message saying that I'm not authorised. I'm probably too stupid to do it correctly. I'm certainly missing some bit of information that will enable me to do it. Milbern (talk) 01:49, 10 July 2023 (UTC)
@Milbern: The link to File:Lopo_Vaz_de_Sampaio.jpg is likely a remnant since the file used to exist, but was deleted two years ago. MKFI (talk) 08:06, 10 July 2023 (UTC)
OK. Thank you for that information. It does not help me at all. I don't know what I am doing wrong. If the file was deleted two years ago, surely the link should not be visible (then I would not be treated as somebody who is doing something wrong if I click on it). Could somebody who has authority now remove it please?
If I click on the link to the Wikipedia profile in the box next to that it brings up the article with the picture which should be in the box which is what I wanted to load so that the column with illustrations is more complete (and more particularly shows the portrait of the person I want to speak about). Could somebody please tell me how do I get that picture of Lopo Vaz de Sampaio into the box which has the dead link and should have the picture? Thank you. Milbern (talk) 08:24, 10 July 2023 (UTC)

If you would like to include a picture of Lopo Vaz de Sampaio in the list you are using for your talk, but the file is listed as "under preparation," there are a few things you can do:
Contact the Editors/Administrators: Reach out to the editors or administrators of the list or the Wikipedia page where the picture is listed as "under preparation." You can do this by leaving a message on the talk page of the article or contacting the editors through their user talk pages. Politely ask for their assistance in uploading the picture or inquire about the status of the file.
Verify Copyright and Licensing: Ensure that the picture you are trying to upload is available under a suitable license on Wikipedia Commons. Images on Wikipedia are typically subject to specific licensing requirements, and you need to comply with these rules when uploading an image.
Check File Upload Guidelines: Review the file upload guidelines on Wikipedia Commons to ensure you are following the correct procedure. There might be specific requirements or steps you need to follow to upload an image successfully.
Contribute to Wikipedia: If you are not authorized to upload the image due to your user rights, consider contributing more to Wikipedia and building up your user reputation. Many platforms have user rights based on reputation and contributions to prevent spam or unauthorized uploads.
Seek Help from Experienced Users: You can also seek assistance from experienced Wikipedia editors who have the necessary user rights to upload images. Reach out to them through their talk pages and ask for their support in uploading the picture. SDavid08 (talk) 07:14, 21 July 2023 (UTC)

I think Krok6kola was asking about the photo of the 1922 "tapestry" object, which is on en.wikipedia. I am able to get the url to a thumbnail for any image on wiki commons but would like to get urls for all available resolutions. Kaldipc (talk) 11:58, 21 July 2023 (UTC)

The URL of thumbs contains a part "/1200px-" (example for a thumb of 1200px). You can simply replace "1200" with any value. It would not make sense to use very low values (less than 32px) or values larger than the actual image. If the full size image is very large, you may get http500 error for large thumnbs (2160px or more). C.Suthorn (@Life_is@no-pony.farm) (talk) 05:25, 22 July 2023 (UTC)

@Ozzie10aaaa: I still am not sure I understand what you are asking. You say "all the med images we need to categorize are here" and then point to a page with a table and no images. I tried following up the links. Are we maybe talking the images that are linked (still at a remove) from https://nccommons.org/wiki/Special:MediaStatistics ? If that's the case: is there any reason not just to copy over the relevant portions of Commons' category scheme (and expand it as necessary where you go "deeper")? Also, do I understand correctly, from a sampling, that all of what you have is under NC licenses, and therefore none of it would be appropriate to port to Commons? - Jmabel ! talk 00:50, 22 July 2023 (UTC)
Yes we are talking about https://nccommons.org/wiki/Special:MediaStatistics

Hi bjh21, Justin (koavf) and Asclepias,
1) sorry it took some time to answer, got v. busy just after I first went on that pic.
2) you're 100% right, it's not flipped. I left an answer in that sense to Jmabel (who also noted that it's not flipped) on the discussion page of the pic and changed to links for the street view cam in the page itself.
Thanks much to you/s for your attention and answers. Whishing you all a good continuation, Pueblo89 (talk) 11:30, 9 August 2023 (UTC)

Can I upload pictures of the Washington Monument that I took recently?

Can I upload pictures of the Washington monument? Danielsc2014 (talk) 16:49, 22 July 2023 (UTC)

Hello! Please explain how to correctly publish a person's photo on their personal page at ru.wikipedia. I am editing a page about my father and would like to publish his photo on it. The photo was taken from a website and was published there with the tag "from personal archive". I had a telephone conversation with the editorial staff of the site and they do not see any obstacles to publishing the photo on the wikipedia page.

Thanks and best regards, Leonid Ivanov

--Livanov2000 (talk) 17:02, 22 July 2023 (UTC)

OK, there are two issues here that need to be addressed, but I'll start with the copyright one. We need a free license from the photographer or the copyright holder using the process at COM:VRT or COM:VRT/ru. The second issue is your conflict of interest. I don't know what Russian Wikipedia's policies are, but you should definitely read them. Abzeronow (talk) 17:18, 22 July 2023 (UTC)

License of picture of commemorative plaques with photos

I am new to wikimedia. I would like to upload some photos that I took of multiple commemorative plaques, comparable to File:Plaque at Halley Park Bentleigh.jpg. The plaques have photos on them. I do not own the rights of these photos and I do not knwo how the photos are licensed. The commemorative plaques are on a public place.

So basicly I took photos of plates with photos and text on them. Is it ok to upload these photos? Thanks for your help. JulMai85 (talk) 12:13, 30 July 2023 (UTC)

In which country are the plaques located? In dependence of the country we can then determine whether a freedom of panorama exception applies. AFBorchert (talk) 13:08, 30 July 2023 (UTC)
The location is Germany. According to the link you provided I think it is ok to upload the photos. But I have no way of telling if the photographer of the original photos ever allowed the use of the photos for the plaques. I mean probably the original (and for me unknown) photographer is fine with this use but I don't know for sure.
Is it ok to upload these pictures from Germany? JulMai85 (talk) 13:23, 30 July 2023 (UTC)
In case of Germany it is no problem if the plaque can be seen from “public streets, ways, or public open spaces”. Please add the {{FoP-Germany}} template to the file description page. --AFBorchert (talk) 13:37, 30 July 2023 (UTC)
Thank you! That answered my questions.

replacing a photograph

I downloaded a picture from Commons "File-Grand-daddy, the largest saguaro" and cleaned it it. It appeared to be a dusty 35mm slide and I "removed" most of the dust. I am not sure how to replace the old image with mine. Any ideas? Carptrash (talk) 19:18, 22 July 2023 (UTC)

@Carptrash: Under the "file history" section, click the link "upload a new version of this file" to upload the new version. After the upload, you can add the template "Retouched picture" in the description page to indicate the cleaning. -- Asclepias (talk) 19:30, 22 July 2023 (UTC)
It worked fine, here and for wikipedia, so thank you. Carptrash (talk) 19:42, 22 July 2023 (UTC)
@Carptrash: Not sure. Apparently you also reduced it to about one-third of its size. -- Asclepias (talk) 22:12, 22 July 2023 (UTC)
With the downscaling, I'm not sure that qualifies as an uncontroversial improvement, and it would perhaps be better to upload it under a distinct name and link them with {{Other version}} or a more specific template. - Jmabel ! talk 01:26, 23 July 2023 (UTC)
The reduction certainly does not qualify. I thought leaving some time to Carptrash to fix that. Surely the cleaning can be done just as well on the original size without modifying the size. A amaller duplicate should not be necessary. -- Asclepias (talk) 01:40, 23 July 2023 (UTC)
The picture, as it shows up on wikipedia, is something like 16 inches by 11 inches, so it is hard to imagine that it needs to be three times that big. I didn't do anything to change the size from what I downloaded. However feel free to revert it back to what it was. Carptrash (talk) 05:28, 23 July 2023 (UTC)
@Carptrash: What you did is called COM:OVERWRITE and it's not really recommended for anything other than minor changes to the originally uploaded file. Resizing an image quite a bit could be seen as a contentious change and probably should be avoid when it comes to overwriting. What you can do is simply re-upload your retouched and resized version as a new file and use the {{Other versions}} template as explained above by Jmabel. You could probably also request that your version be COM:SPLIT off into another separate file. You can then add your version to the Wikipedia article if you like. However, if someone disagrees with the sizing you can then discuss which size is better on the relevant articles talk page. In addition, large images can always be re-sized usually syntax as explained in en:MOS:IMAGESIZE. -- Marchjuly (talk) 12:40, 23 July 2023 (UTC)
I would appreciate it if someone could roll back (or whatever) the picture to how it was and we can be done with it. I do not know how the resizing happened, but appearently it did. Thanks for all the help & suggestions but I think we best just scrap my attempt and perhaps I will try again. Or not. my version is at the wikipedia "Saguaro" article now, I assume it will disappear and then I can deal with that or not. Sorry about all the trouble. Carptrash (talk) 16:35, 23 July 2023 (UTC)
Done. —‍Mdaniels5757 (talk • contribs) 16:42, 23 July 2023 (UTC)

Public plaque - is it a non-artistic object? Fine to upload?

I was recently in Portbou and visited the monument to Walter Benjamin there, while there I took a picture of a plaque which is put up on the monument, is it fine for me to upload this picture and add it to Portbous wikipedia article? The picture only shows the plaque and not the monument, both the monument and the plaque are located in a public area which anyone can access for free. Axeles stellaris (talk) 12:32, 23 July 2023 (UTC)

@Axeles stellaris: This kind of thing is covered in COM:CB#Noticeboards and signs. For reference, the text appearing on such plaques may also be eligible for copyright protection, even when publicly displayed. So, it could depend on how old the plaque is and the COM:Freedom of panorama rules of the country where the plaque is located. If your Portbou is the en:Portbou in Spain, then COM:FOP Spain seems to allow such photos to be taken. — Marchjuly (talk) 13:15, 23 July 2023 (UTC)

How can I know if my uploaded work is licensed The Curious Traveler (talk) 19:03, 22 July 2023 (UTC)

@The Curious Traveler: I'm not certain I understand your question, so the following may or may not answer it:
  • I assume by "work" we are talking about photos.
  • If you took the photo, and it is not derivative of someone else's copyrighted work, you can license it as you wish. The most common license here is {{CC-BY-SA-4.0}}.
  • If you did not take the photo, then you should only be uploading it to Commons if you know its copyright and licensing status. Probably only about 2 or 3% or what you will find in the Internet is in the public domain and another 2 or 3% is free-licensed. So if you don't already know the copyright and licensing status, it is very probable that your upload constitutes a copyright violation. Which is to say, if you don't understand copyright and licensing, please don't upload anything other than photos you took yourself.
If you have a specific question about the copyright status of something in particular, feel free to ask. - Jmabel ! talk 01:20, 23 July 2023 (UTC)

Can not upload new version of image. Weird repeating problem

Jmabel and others. I am having the same problem with another image. Please see:

I am unable to upload a new version of this image used in articles worldwide:

New version can be downloaded from here:

When I try to upload the new version the upload form switches to the new uploads version of the upload form. In red it says "If you do not provide suitable license and source information, your upload will be deleted without further notice. Thank you for your understanding." I am not trying to upload and create a new image file. So I bail out. It happens every time I click on the upload link: "Upload a new version of this file". I browse to image. I enter file changes: "Latest from source". Then I click "Upload file".

I have been able to upload new versions of other images the last few days. So I don't know why this image upload is not working.

Can someone else upload the new version for me? --Timeshifter (talk) 22:49, 21 July 2023 (UTC)

Thanks Jmabel. I get no option to ignore warnings. I have seen that option on many images. But not in this case. When I click the upload button it immediately gives me the upload page for completely new images. --Timeshifter (talk) 23:57, 21 July 2023 (UTC)
@Timeshifter: I've occasionally seen something like this recently, where when I try to overwrite a file I briefly see the warning page and then get bounced to a blank upload form. I think when I've seen that I've worked around it by going back to the upload form and choosing "Ignore any warnings". When it next happens I'll try to remember to look into it in more detail. --bjh21 (talk) 13:09, 22 July 2023 (UTC)
Bjh21 and Jmabel. I tried starting over and still ended up with the blank upload form for new images. Not the form for overwriting images. There was no option for "Ignore any warnings". It just wasn't that upload form. It was the same for the previous image I reported on (see other thread I linked to). So I know it wasn't a mistake on my part.
If it happens again I will report it here. Maybe others have the problem too, and will start reporting it. It is an infrequent problem. I can go for months without having the need to overwrite an image. And it doesn't happen with all images I need to overwrite. Not at all.
Bjh21. If the warning page is showing up first, it is happening so fast that I am not seeing it. I will try the back button next time, and see if that brings me to the warning page. --Timeshifter (talk) 17:29, 22 July 2023 (UTC)
@Timeshifter: Now that I'm paying attention, I've noticed that every time I go to Special:Upload, I get redirected to the same URL with uploadformstyle=plain added. And if I turn off the "ImprovedUploadForm" gadget this stops happening. And looking through Help:Gadget-ImprovedUploadForm, I find “If an error occurs after it has already begun changing the form, the script forces an automatic reload of the upload form, with enhancements disabled (i.e., with this uploadformstyle=plain parameter added).” I suspect that something is causing that gadget to encounter an error every time, which is causing the spurious reloads (and data loss when overiting the file). Any JavaScript wizards around who can take a look? --bjh21 (talk) 18:43, 22 July 2023 (UTC)

((outdent}} Thanks Bjh21. I disabled the gadget. Hopefully, that solves the problem. I may not know though for awhile since it can be months between overwrites. And not all were a problem in the past. --Timeshifter (talk) 20:03, 22 July 2023 (UTC)

Thanks for looking into this, glad I found this discussion. The "Upload a new version of this file" link still seems to take me to the same form with the same errors as others described above. After clicking the upload file button, the page reloads and halfway down the page a red error message comes up about needing to add description information. I tried the ignore warnings box and that doesn't help either. "Upload warning. File extension ".JPG" does not match the detected MIME type of the file (image/png)."

Correction of an Omission on Music Notes

In attempting to find the author of the 1960's song "Get Together," I noticed an omission on your site that I would like to correct. I found the page labeled "Get Together (Youngbloods song)." In the section on "Cover Versions," I noticed one version missing -- The Mitchell Trio also covered this song on its Mercury album titled, "That's the Way It's Gonna Be" (SG61049) released in August of 1965. It is a more upbeat/energetic version than the Youngbloods take. It is also the first album released after John Denver replaced Chad Mitchell in the group. 2. How do I change the style for the headings? !important does absolutely nothing. I just made headings with spans for now. Figured it out. It's not a very pretty solution.
  3. How do I change to the default background on my Babel shell
  4. How do I make the Babel shell float on the right with the Minerva Neue skin?
  5. How do I change the color of bullet points?

Thanks in advance, --QuickQuokka [talkcontribs] 03:25, 27 July 2023 (UTC)

What's the proper way to upload a remix of a photo under the CC BY-SA 4.0 licence on here?

Sorry if this is answered somewhere but everything I found was about how you can't use things that are copyrighted, not about how you properly use things published here under a Creative Commons licence.

I found a photo here and used it as a reference to create a vector drawing of my own. The photo is published here under the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike 4.0 International license, which matches the default licence I see when I go to the uploads section. But then I get confused.

1. Under the "Release rights" section, there are two options: "This file is my own work." or "This file is not my own work." This is a really confusing binary when I think my work clearly falls under the licence's remix category. It is my own work but it's heavily based on the proportions of patterns captured in the photo, even though I added my own designs, so I want to credit the photo.

2. It seems like I should say "This file is not my own work." because then I get options to link to the original and credit the person.

3. That is ok until I get to the "Describe" section where at the bottom it says "By clicking "publish", you agree to the terms of use, and you irrevocably agree to release your contribution under the Creative Commons CC0 License." This is concerning because according to the CC BY-SA 4.0 "you must distribute your contributions under the same license as the original." However Wikimedia Commons seems to be forcing me to publish it under a looser public domain licence with zero restrictions.

4. This might suggest I should say "This file is my own work." and then select to publish under the CC BY-SA 4.0. But then when I get to the "Describe" section I see the same note about agreeing to publish under the Creative Commons CC0 License, as if I never made any selection before.

Feel like I'm stuck in an impossible loop just trying to do what I'm supposed to do. What is that exactly? Sharonlamsy (talk) 04:04, 27 July 2023 (UTC)

I think @GPSLeo can clear up this "misunderstanding" (and no, I have not written an essay about it and I will not do that :-) C.Suthorn (@Life_is@no-pony.farm) (talk) 12:01, 27 July 2023 (UTC)
@Sharonlamsy: From what you say, your drawing is your own work, although it is derived in part from the photo. The situation is basically what you describe above in your point "1". It sounds like the work may be uploaded through the "own work" path of the upload form you are using. If you selected CC BY-SA 4.0 for your image, then that is the license of your image. I don't know what that is about a CC0 message (I don't use that labyrinthine form for my uploads), but I suppose that the CC0 message may be about the licensing for the descriptive structured data that you may add at some step, not the licensing of your drawing. -- Asclepias (talk) 14:40, 27 July 2023 (UTC)
Yes the CCO message only refers to the structured data description of the file and not to the file itself. For remixes with many source files and authors there is no good way to add the information in the UploadWizard form. If you do not want to use an other upload way I would suggest to upload as you own work and to add the other authors and the sources after you uploaded the file. Here is an example how a page with many sources and authors could look like File:WLE Germany banner 2023.jpg. GPSLeo (talk) 15:36, 27 July 2023 (UTC)
@Sharonlamsy: the upload wizard is good for commons situations, and barely usable for uncommon situations. My bet suggestion to those who use that method of uploading and want to do something complicated is to try to get close to what you want, then as soon as you've uploaded get in there by hand and edit the file page to fix what is wrong. - Jmabel ! talk 17:02, 27 July 2023 (UTC)

There is Category:Trevi Moran and it contains a number of photos of a man by the name of Trevor Moran and a number of photos of a woman by the name of Trevi Moran. It does not look like there is a single photo of a third person by the name of "Trevi Moran" that could be updated.

Midjourney

Trying to figure out whether or not I can upload images I've created through a Pro Midjourney account. I know that site says we're free to use these images as we wish/commercially. But I'm looking to host them here for a project I'm working on; I'm also not sure if it has to be marked as "public domain" or I can choose another CC license. I need to ask what is the project you are working on? Trade (talk) 18:37, 27 July 2023 (UTC)
I've been tasked with finding public domain photos that when put together will illustrate a series of fictitious life stories set across various time periods, eg. a man who was a circus performer in the 1870s, a female secretary in the 1940s, etc. It seems kind of impossible to me, to get photos that might feasibly represent these things! At least, very time consuming. So I figured (hoped) that creating AI images based on those prompts might be a better way to go. Doesn't matter to me if they're public domain and anyone can use them for their own purposes. GH Images (talk) 18:53, 27 July 2023 (UTC)

Files using template getting automatically included in the category to which the template belongs

Hello. I created "Template:Map-from-year-dont-overwrite", and used it in some files. Now, I find out that those files are shown as belonging to "Category:Dont overwrite-file templates", same category to which my new template belongs. It isn't happening with other templates belonging to the same category. Also, the category clearly states " It should not contain media files or pages outside the template namespace.", so it embarrases me. Can someone provide any help? MGeog2022 (talk) 20:30, 27 July 2023 (UTC)

Update: when loading this link while logged out, I don't see any files, so it's OK. When I'm logged in, I still see them, so I suspect it's some kind of caching issue (it's not the first time I experience them on Commons). At the images pages, such as this, I see that "Dont overwrite-file templates" is always shown as a hidden category (both while logged in, and while logged out). This is not a serious problem though, since the category that must not contain media files, wouldn't contain them, if what I see when logged out is right. I appreciate any kind of help, in any case. Thank you. ~~~~ MGeog2022 (talk) 20:46, 27 July 2023 (UTC)

Page Name

Good Day/Night Sir, Im ibrahim Al-Sharqawi I want to change this page [15] name To (Coat of arms of Egypt (1972–1984)2) and thank you very much. Ibrahim alsharqawi124 (talk) 22:31, 25 July 2023 (UTC)

@Ibrahim alsharqawi124: Normally, the right way to do this is to use {{Rename}} on the page in question. I've moved it to File:Coat of arms of Egypt (1972–1984).png (can't imagine there was a good reason to add "2" on the end), but this seems a bit of a mess, and I'd like you to sort out a few things.
  • You indicate https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/e/e2/Anwar_Sadat-Egyptian_Parliament-1977_%2804%29.png as a source, but it's hard to see how that can be a source. It would certainly seem that your source is File:Coat of arms of Egypt (1972–1984).svg which you also link. Is the latter correct (that is, is it the actual source)?
  • You claim to have a copyright on this which you are releasing into the public domain. What is the creative work you have done that would give you a copyright here?
  • The image is uncategorized. Please add categories.
  • I'm not at all sure why you'd make a PNG based on an SVG when an SVG is the preferred format for this sort of thing, but I suppose this is your prerogative. Still, for the future: this seems an odd thing to do. Similarly, you have a template about "This vector image..." but a PNG is precisely NOT a vector image, which is why SVG is preferred.
Jmabel ! talk 01:19, 26 July 2023 (UTC)
It looks like the user here uploaded the PNG because the text in the SVG is an auto-traced mess. They probably extracted and manipulated the text from that photo, then inserted it into the SVG, and rendered that. As such, the user might have some kind of copyright in that work depending on jurisdiction, which they have evidentially released into the public domain. Ideally, the text on the SVG would be cleaned up, but curved text in SVGs isn't always easy to get working properly. Eiim (talk) 22:32, 28 July 2023 (UTC)

Category:Stable Diffusion works by Tullius Detritus

@Tullius Detritus uploaded a number of generated images, among these the files in Category:Stable Diffusion works by Tullius Detritus. I questioned this on the user's talk page and soon after @Trade created a DR. Now another DR was created for Commons:Deletion requests/File:Stable Diffusion - In Ancient Rome - 5.jpg. I think all the files in "Category:Stable Diffusion works by Tullius Detritus" need to be treated consistently, as other uploads like the DesignerMadson uploads by Tullius Detritus. Copyright

If someone has given me permission to use an image - how do I explain that to the satisfaction of the copyright robot.? In other words - what kind of copyright symbol do I use - because the robot insists on seeing one. It will not accept the words "Joe has given me permission to use this image" Charles.bowyer (talk) 21:52, 27 July 2023 (UTC)

@Charles.bowyer: sadly, "has given me permission" doesn't work in a community like this where people mostly don't know each other, or every plagiarist out there could just claim, "It's OK, I have permission." Further, we need a specific license from the copyright-holder and just "you've got permission" is rather vague (and almost never amounts to informed consent of licensing terms). So basically one of two thing needs to happen:
  1. If the image is already online (or can be placed online) on a publicly visible site or page obviously under control of the copyright-holder (e.g. their own web domain, or a public post on their Facebook page or Flickr stream), they can clearly state there what license they are offering and then anyone can upload here citing that as a source.
  2. Otherwise, there is a process laid out at COM:VRT for the copyright-holder to send an email granting an appropriate license. Note that the email in question must come from the copyright-holder, not from you, e.g. no forwarding of emails (though very occasionally a copyright-holder prefers actual writing on paper, in which case a photo of the document will do).
I know this is a bit of a stumbling block, but I presume that if you think about it you can see the necessity. - Jmabel ! talk 22:07, 27 July 2023 (UTC)
Thank you - that clears it up. Charles.bowyer (talk) 21:35, 28 July 2023 (UTC)
Get the other person to post the photo online with a text underneath stating that the photo is licensed under CC BY-SA 4.0. Then you can upload the photo to Commons under the CC BY-SA 4.0 license, using the link as evidence Trade (talk) 22:11, 27 July 2023 (UTC)
Yes, that is the first of the two alternatives I mentioned, but only works if they have an identifiable web presence. - Jmabel ! talk 23:15, 27 July 2023 (UTC)

Help with fair use of 1970s newspaper clippings

Hello, I'm working on a page with things that happened back in the 1970s. The page was rejected a few times because "not notable enough" because I didn't have enough newspaper items, but those things are not online. The newspaper archives were accessible for a short time, but then they were removed, so all the effort I put into fining them was lost. But I do have images of the newspaper clippings, so I want to upload them to prove those things happened and they were covered by local media. The subject of the page died a few years ago and I want to wrap up the story and try to get it published.

Also, I understand some previous concerns about parts of it looking "promotional" so I worked on that.

So - the images - can you please help me to understand how I can add these. If I can't add them, how can anyone prove anything that was pre-internet?

Here are copies of three newspaper clipping images I have: https://imgur.com/4ms7Om0 https://imgur.com/bc5yefA https://imgur.com/ISteTao Photoloop (talk) 07:44, 28 July 2023 (UTC)

@Photoloop: newspapers do not need to be online to be cited in Wikipedia. Just give a normal bibliographical citation.
There are no circumstances in which Commons accepts unlicensed copyrighted materials. - Jmabel ! talk 15:15, 28 July 2023 (UTC)
@Photoloop: To be here, on Commons, clippings from the 1970s in the U.S. must meet the condition stated in PD-US-no notice. In the clippings linked above, the two articles from AP are not usable on Commons. See the introduction at the top of the page Category:Associated Press articles. For the article by David Lightman, you would have to do your own research to find if The Evening Sun of Baltimore had a copyright notice. Images in fair use are are not possible on Commons. For that, you would have to see with Wikipedia. -- Asclepias (talk) 17:34, 28 July 2023 (UTC)

"Category:Dont overwrite-file templates" automatically showing files which use one of its templates

As I said here, all files using "Template:Map-from-year-dont-overwrite" template are automatically shown as belonging to "Category:Dont overwrite-file templates", where only templates sholud belong. It doesn't happen with other templates belonging to the same category, whose content is almost identical in these aspects. It's really frustrating me. Is there here anybody who knows enough about templates, who can help? Thank you. MGeog2022 (talk) 11:50, 28 July 2023 (UTC)

If I remove the category from the template (I restored it later), the files continue to be shown as part of the category, even when the template itself doesn't. So I suspect the template is OK now, but the files continue belonging to "Dont overwrite-file templates" as a hidden category. Any help about how to fix this is appreciated. MGeog2022 (talk) 12:02, 28 July 2023 (UTC)
@MGeog2022: When you change a template in a way that changes categories of pages that use it, MediaWiki doesn't immediately apply that change to every page that uses the template. Instead, it slowly processes the change in the background. You can tell when this is happening because the file appear in its category page, but the category doesn't appear on the file page. You can force a particular page to update by a null edit. Edit the file page and choose "Publish" without changing anything. This won't leave an entry in the edit history, but it will cause MediaWiki to recalculate the page's categories. --bjh21 (talk) 12:19, 28 July 2023 (UTC)
@Bjh21: I've just verified that an update to a file, without making any changes, fixed it. I'll do it for all other implied files. Thank you very much :-) MGeog2022 (talk) 12:37, 28 July 2023 (UTC)

updating corporate logo as company now has a new logo How to?

Hello, Iogen has updated its logo. It is copyrighted to Iogen but authorizes its use here on the Iogen Corporation entry. how do I make the switch? I have account just unsure of how to update. Thx N Nancy1035 (talk) 15:34, 28 July 2023 (UTC)

@Nancy1035: "authorizes its use here" doesn't help. Commons hosts only media that is either free of copyright (simple logos are often not copyrightable even though they are trademarked, but you say this one is copyrighted so that doesn't apply) or offer a free license that allows for derivative works and commercial use, which almost no for-profit corporation will ever do with their logo.
What exactly are you trying to accomplish here? Is this about getting the logo into an article on the English-language Wikipedia? They allow a means to upload non-free logos within the English-language Wikipedia (not involving Commons at all) for this specific purpose. See en:Template:Non-free logo, and make sure you read the "To the uploader" section.
Also, two other things probably worth knowing: (1) if you have a connection to the company, make sure you are familiar with en:WP:COI, because if you don't disclose that connection properly, the English-language Wikipedia is likely to block you for failing to disclose a conflict of interest. (2) In the (unlikely) event that this logo is actually appropriate for Commons, make sure you upload under a new filename, then change Wikipedia to use the new file. Do not overwrite an existing logo on Commons, which is still of historical interest.
I know that's a lot: you are doing something that's actually a bit tricky to get right, and I'm trying to make sure you know where all the pitfalls are. - Jmabel ! talk 16:42, 28 July 2023 (UTC)

It's fine; it's a caching issue, and it will resolve on its own, given enough time. The image is updated, and I can see the new one has a larger filesize and a higher resolution. For you, the old image is cached, because you viewed that image before uploading a new one in-place. The same URL is handled by the cache. Elizium23 (talk) 22:12, 28 July 2023 (UTC)

  • @Mweemba Slaighter: It would be really useful to say what competition, there are many here.
  • You may grant any license for your own work. In order to upload to Commons, though, that license must allow (1) derivative works and (2) commercial use, both without payment. You may require that the work be attributed to you. We recommend the license {{CC-BY-SA-4.0}} which gives the required permissions, and requires that the work be attributed to you. - Jmabel ! talk 16:20, 29 July 2023 (UTC)

Uploading image of artwork from famous artist

I would like to upload images of artwork to accompany the Wikipedia article of an artist. What steps do I need to take to ensure that I comply with Wikipedia's guidelines for doing so? The works themselves are not in the public domain, but are displayed in galleries all over the world. There are also images that are available for view on third party sites and others that are not.

Any insight on guidance would be very much appreciated.

I would propose the following justification:

Purpose of use in article(WP:NFCC#8) To support encyclopedic discussion of this work in this article. The illustration is specifically needed to support the following point(s):

This image further illustrates the variation in the artist's oeuvre; showing a portrait, the subject of which is a person who has been mentioned in the biographical section of the wikipedia article.

Not replaceable with free media because (WP:NFCC#1) This image cannot be replaced because it illustrated the direct relation between the person painted and mentioned in the article as well as further illuminating the broad variation in the artist's body of work.

Minimal use (WP:NFCC#3) The image is a small, low-res version of the painting in question; and cannot be used in any means of reproduction.

Respect for commercial opportunities(WP:NFCC#2) The image is small and of low-quality, making it unusable for reproduction or redistribution. Gcath (talk) 12:46, 30 July 2023 (UTC)

Commons does not support fair use. Your list of criteria from WP:NFCC is not valid for Commons but for uploads at en:wp. At Commons, if the works of the artist are not yet in the public domain and if the freedom of panorama exception does not apply, a written permission by the artist or their heirs is required. See COM:L and COM:VRT for details. AFBorchert (talk) 13:05, 30 July 2023 (UTC)

How to see what files have been deleted

I want so check the deleted files of a single uploader (the deletion log is not the way to go, because these are done only by himself). What must I do? --88.128.88.46 12:56, 30 July 2023 (UTC)

Checkout the talk page (including its history) to look for links to deletion notices. This is the best approach without having admin privileges which are required to get a list of deleted contributions including deleted files. AFBorchert (talk) 13:00, 30 July 2023 (UTC)
Look at the upload log (not the deletion log). It lists all the files, including the deleted files, uploaded by the user. The deleted files appear as red links. You can click the link "logs", which will show all the logs. -- Asclepias (talk) 13:42, 30 July 2023 (UTC)

How to download a mp3 file?

I can't download mp3 file Олег Серов (talk) 16:32, 30 July 2023 (UTC)

  • @Олег Серов: Meaning you can't play it, or you can't save it to your file system (since both involve downloading to your device)? If it's the former, I have no particular suggestion. If it's the latter, and you are on a PC, look for the filename under the little strip for playing the file, but above the file information. Right-click that. You should be given an option to save the file. - Jmabel ! talk 17:14, 30 July 2023 (UTC)

File tagged as Category:Media_without_a_source_as_of_28_July_2023

I uploaded a poster for Wikimania 2023 (A Network of community-centered software development teams.pdf) and it includes some illustrations so was identified as derivative work. I updated the source= based on the guidance I could find (using Template:own based and adding the file names). The flag for deletion is still there above the description and so is the hidden category (Category:Media_without_a_source_as_of_28_July_2023). What do I do need to do to get that removed? Thanks for your help! Lena Meintrup (WMDE) (talk) 07:48, 31 July 2023 (UTC)

SVG translation

Hi there, I hope someone can help. I tried to add an Italian translated cation to https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Visualisation_mode_median_mean.svg. From the changes, however, it looks like I might have deleted the English caption. I then tried to undo the change, but undo failed. Can someone put this file back to its state before my changes?

In general, I'm finding it very difficult to add a translation to this svg in Wikipedia without extensive research. There is already a Spanish translation in the svg file and the Spanish words ("moda" / "mediana" / "media") in the picture are exactly the same in Italian. Additionally, the Italian caption would be "Una funzione di distribuzione con evidenziate la moda, la mediana e la media". Can anyone knowledgeable in svg translations help add these to the file?

Thanks for any help anyone can give. ElectricFeet (talk) 14:33, 31 July 2023 (UTC)

Uploading Video Files

I'm trying to upload a video file and I'm getting a message indicating that Wikipedia does not support this file extension. I tried to upload MKV, MOV, and AVI formats. None was accepted. Anyone? Lora Gilyard (talk) 23:25, 31 July 2023 (UTC)

@Lora Gilyard: You can see Commons:Video and if you don't find the information you're looking for, you can ask at VP/Technical. -- Asclepias (talk) 01:12, 1 August 2023 (UTC)
@Lora Gilyard Short answer: You can upload WEBM. If your video is a different format, you will either have to transcode to webm or you can use video2commons, that will transcode the video to webm. C.Suthorn (@Life_is@no-pony.farm) (talk) 11:19, 1 August 2023 (UTC)

Tried to use my own images for Wikipedia but identified as copyright violation

About 10 years ago, I created some maps/visuals to publicize the research of our research group about gas leaks on several news outlets such as NPR, Washington Post, the New York Times, and Boston Globe (among others): (https://archive.nytimes.com/green.blogs.nytimes.com/2012/11/20/methane-is-popping-up-all-over-boston/; https://www.washingtonpost.com/national/health-science/researchers-find-nearly-6000-natural-gas-leaks-in-districts-aging-pipe-system/2014/01/15/f6ee2204-7dff-11e3-9556-4a4bf7bcbd84_story.html; https://www.businessinsider.com/washington-dc-has-5893-gas-leaks-2014-1; https://www.npr.org/2014/01/16/262911327/aging-pipes-in-d-c-create-about-6-000-natural-gas-leaks). Definitely the visuals are my research products and the news outlet do not have the copyright of the visuals and they are just users. Now I want to use some of the images for Wikipedia but was reported as copyright violation, which again is not because I am the creator and owner of the images used. Any suggestions on how to get around this? Thanks a lot. Bnurs (talk) 17:09, 15 July 2023 (UTC)

If you are the named creator credited by NPR, you should contact COM:VRT. Abzeronow (talk) 17:16, 15 July 2023 (UTC)

But if they are derivative of others' (e.g. Google's) copyrighted content, we won't be able to host them on Commons, because they derive from images copyrighted by someone else. - Jmabel ! talk 18:17, 15 July 2023 (UTC)

We are using google earth to create the 3D visuals, but the key data itself is our own Also here is the google's gridline on creative arts using Google earth https://www.google.com/intl/en-GB_ALL/permissions/geoguidelines/, it is permitted for such work. Will this still be a concern? Thanks a lot. Bnurs (talk) 18:32, 15 July 2023 (UTC)

It says "non-commercial use" which is a no go for Commons. Abzeronow (talk) 18:44, 15 July 2023 (UTC)
