Wiki Loves Living Heritage Photography Competition Singapore (15 June 2023 - 15 July 2023) is a public photo competition on Wikimedia Commons, that invites everyone from Singapore to participate in sharing the tangible and intangible heritage of Singapore on Wikimedia Commons under a free Creative Commons license. This contest is a part of the global Wiki Loves Living Heritage campaign and is supported by the National Youth Achievement Award (NYAA) and the National Heritage Board (Singapore) (NHB). This entire initiative aims to support the awareness, engagement, and excitement around Wikimania 2023, Singapore.

Winners

Between 16 July and 15 August 2023, 1,180 photos submitted were evaluated through rounds of selections. In the first round, we had community members from Singapore to have a look at the photos. From 16 August to 19 August 2023, Wikimania 2023 participants could vote for their favourites among the 10 photos, which were displayed in the concourse.

What is living heritage?

The term 'cultural heritage' has changed content considerably in recent decades, partially owing to the instruments developed by UNESCO. Cultural heritage does not end at monuments and collections of objects. It also includes traditions or living expressions inherited from our ancestors and passed on to our descendants, such as oral traditions, performing arts, social practices, rituals, festive events, knowledge and practices concerning nature and the universe or the knowledge and skills to produce traditional crafts.

Competition rules

There are only a few rules for photos to participate in the contest. Let's quickly go through them. Every submission should be:

  • Self-taken and self-uploaded;
  • Uploaded between 15 June 2023, 8:00AM (GMT+08:00) and 16 July 2023, 7:59AM (GMT+08:00)
  • During the upload process, you give permission with a CC BY-SA license to re-use the image;
  • Contain an example of Singapore's Living Heritage, which you have identified Click here;
  • Should have a proper title and description; Eg: SimpleCaption_01 (AttendingACulturalFestivalInSingapore_01) or LocationName_01 (KampongGlam_01) or AppropriateName_01 (ExploringHajiLane_01)

Next to that, there are a few practical rules:

  • Before participating in the competition please create a Wikimedia account which is necessary to make the uploads.
  • You should have an activated e-mail address on Wikimedia Commons;
  • If the photo gets deleted for any reason, it is automatically disqualified from the competition;
  • You are responsible for following local laws, and considering cultural and religious sensitivities around the element you will capture;
  • The competition is open to anyone residing in Singapore; anyone of any age group is welcome to participate.

During the competition, you may upload as many pictures as you want of Singapore's living heritage. At the end of this process, the jury determines the top 10 which will then be displayed at Wikimania for attendees to vote on the top 3. The winners will be announced during the closing ceremony on 19 August 2023.

Judging criteria

The jury will determine the winners of the contest by taking into consideration the following criteria (in no particular order):

  • Technical quality (sharpness, use of light, perspective etc.);

The primary consideration will be given to the sharpness and resolution of the image. It is recommended that images contain at least 2 real megapixels of information. You can find more information regarding image guidelines on Commons by referring to the provided Image guidelines.

  • Originality;

If there are already thousands of similar photos available on the internet, chances are that your photograph might not be the most original depiction of the subject. The jury will be seeking that "WOW factor" in your photographs, something that sets them apart and grabs attention.

  • Usefulness of the image for Wikipedia;

The jury will also evaluate the educational value of your photograph. They will take into account whether your image is likely to be of value to another Wikimedia project.

Images that reach a top ranking of the finale, will typically at least fulfill the Images guidelines. But feel free to submit many images, and let the jury be concerned if they are good enough.

Meet our jury

Our jury members will process the images through three rounds during the last two weeks of July. The jurors will be collectively responsible for all selection and considerations in line with the contest rules and criteria.
