upload a file

Hi everybody! I'm honestly really confused. So, I need explanations about copyright. How do I ensure Wikimedia that I have the permission? Because I've found a way to get the permission but I don't know how to ensure YOU guys! Just, a simple explanation please!!!

fenia🖤tellmehi 13:00, 1 June 2022 (UTC)

@Fisforfenia Typically you just ask them to send the permission to permissions-commons@wikimedia.org - see COM:VRT for details and an email template. Feel free to ask again here if you have any further questions. El Grafo (talk) 13:15, 1 June 2022 (UTC)
@Fisforfenia: the operative words there are "ask them to send". We need the permission to come directly, not through you as an intermediary. - Jmabel ! talk 14:56, 1 June 2022 (UTC)

Own Photo taken with own camera - Won't let me upload photo

Dear all, I tried to upload a photo I took with my own camera, still the software does not take it. Why is that? The rights lie with me, and only me. Its a photo of "me in a public place". Please comment and give feed back how I can solve this riddle. Thanks, Ron — Preceding unsigned comment added by Rosc56 (talk • contribs) 14:46, 1 June 2022 (UTC)

@Rosc56: Hi, and welcome. I am sorry to inform you that you have triggered Special:AbuseFilter/153 by trying to cross-wiki upload png and smaller (<50,000 bytes or <2,000,000 pixels) jpg photos as a new user while leaving the summary intact, and Special:AbuseFilter/156 by trying to upload smaller (<50,000 bytes) jpg photos as a new user. Such uploads of png images are not allowed at all. The following applies to each photo. You indicated it's your own work. Usually when someone uploads a png or smaller jpg photo, it's a copyright violation taken from the web. Please upload the full-size original of it per COM:HR, including any metadata, but if you were not the original photographer, that person may need to license it on their official website or social media or send permission via OTRS with a carbon copy to you. Also, any png image will look fuzzy when scaled down or jaggy when scaled up, so you may want to upload svg or jpg versions, too. If you can't get a compliant license, the image may still be uploaded to English Wikipedia in compliance with en:WP:F because we don't allow Fair Use here. If you change the summary or use our Upload Wizard instead, you should be able to avoid filter 153. See also COM:SIGN.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 15:25, 1 June 2022 (UTC)

Deleting Duplicate Files

I need to know how to delete a duplicate file I would like to delete File:Conduntance Vs. Flash Voltage.png, because there is a spelling error. I re-uploaded the correct spelling of the file and got a Duplication error Now I have two files , one correct and one incorrect I will not use the the 1st one but will keep the second one The automatic file deletion system has automatic put deletion on both files I need only one deleted . What is the simplest way to do this? I read about requesting a deletion, using a template, nominate for deletion, but there was no clear path on how to do it Thanks — Preceding unsigned comment added by Professor6000 (talk • contribs) 09:26, 7 June 2022 (UTC)

@Professor6000: Hi, and welcome. There are many problems with what you did:
  1. You neglected to indicate the source of your data. I am the source of all the data . The data was collected in the lab over a 6 month period .
Would you accept that from a student? No.,I will left justify all of the text. The initial Draft was all a word file. The graphs were aligned perfectly, referenced and tables were perfect. When I uploaded the project to Wikipedia, every thing became distorted and misaligned
  1. 92.9% of each file you uploaded was unusable whitespace. Would you accept that from a student? No I would not accept that from a student . I can fix that
  2. You chose to format your table in png format. Any png image will look fuzzy when scaled down (due to design decisions discussed in phab:T192744) or jaggy when scaled up, so you may want to upload an svg or jpg version, too.
Tables of just text are generally OOS; for help in generating tables in wikitext on-wiki, please see mw:Help:Tables.

It's like I am doing the project completely all over again. This paper took about 6 months to write and I wish not to repeat all of the charts, and graphs.

  1. You uploaded File:Conduntance Vs. Flash Voltage.png with a bad filename in the first place. You are correct about that and there should have been a simple delete or remove icon available.
  2. You did that without a machine-readable copyright tag. One must be included with each upload.
  3. When adding such a tag, you did not remove "" as no longer true. I did that for you on both files.
Thanks for doing that...I will do it next time

(How about giving you the entire page with all the charts and graphs and you make all the corrections..The text is already written explaining the graphs and charts You say"Wishful Thinking"(:-)

  1. You uploaded File:Conductance Vs. Flash Voltage.png in ignorance of a warning not to upload a duplicate file; "I was given the choice" to "Upload or not to upload" and I needed the file.......

next time, to change file name, please ensure that the description is correct (using an "edit" link") and then use RenameLink, or Rename (if you can't use JavaScript). Ok Thanks

  1. You did not use an internal link above.
  2. You used too many newlines above; I removed them.

Thanks ````

  1. You did not follow COM:SIGN.

== How do I locate my initial Draft ? I found it .Thanks````

  • @Professor6000: You have some fundamental misconceptions about how Wikipedia and Commons work (can someone please direct P6000 to the beginner's help at en.wp?) You write that you have a text that you have worked on for 6 months and that you don't want to spend another 6 months rewriting it for Wikipedia. And you shouldn't! That is original research and that is not allowed on Wikipedia. Wikipedia contains encyclopedia articles based on secondary and tertiary literature that are newly written as encyclopedia articles for Wikipedia. As for your uploads: they will all be deleted. They are not images, they are tables. Tables are created as text in wiki markup (wikitable syntax). --C.Suthorn (talk) 06:43, 9 June 2022 (UTC)
Just FTR: linked relevant Wikipedia instructions on tables and original research at the deletion request and Wikipedia user talk. Message received, I guess. El Grafo (talk) 10:25, 9 June 2022 (UTC)

Help Identifying Copyright

I am planning to add a map from a website. Looking at their copyright policy, they say that everything in all of their pages is free to use. Is that enough justification to upload an image from one of their pages to Commons, if so, what license might it be? Thanks for your help! DiscoA340 (talk) 19:46, 1 June 2022 (UTC)

Policy info page (Copyright found in "Terms of use" section). https://www.carolana.com/about_this_site.html

Example of page (said image to be uploaded is the map in the middle). https://www.carolana.com/NC/Counties/craven_county_nc.html

Yes, I think so. You need only to attribute the source. Ruslik (talk) 20:48, 1 June 2022 (UTC)
Thanks for responding. I also wanted to know if ShareAlike 3.0 or 4.0 would be better for an image like that? DiscoA340 (talk) 01:28, 2 June 2022 (UTC)
Attribution-ShareAlike would be best suitable. And the map seems simple enough to be converted to SVG format as well. Conversion of a bitmap to vector is not a trivial process, because they are separate formats. In most of the cases you can use an SVG editor to trace the bitmap, but sometimes you have to trace it manually. If you're unsure of the conversion, just upload the original bitmap with appropriate license and place an SVG template in the file description, and someone will do the conversion for you. I really don't understand how this helps?

Someone insists that the train itself is a bus, so he refuses to accept anyone's help or advice. Rename to "Category:Rail substitute bus transport in Taiwan" is undisputable and easily understand to anyone. However, he neither he neither explains what "Train-like Service" means nor renaming the category is permitted, I really don't understand how this helps?! But the further question is: how to break this deadlock?--Kai3952 (talk) 11:06, 2 June 2022 (UTC)

@Kai3952: Why can't you and 鐵路1 discuss this civilly at Commons:Categories for discussion/2022/05/Category:Train-like Service?   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 11:28, 2 June 2022 (UTC)
Because I can't think of a better way to break the deadlock.--Kai3952 (talk) 12:16, 2 June 2022 (UTC)
Which is a good reason to take it to here.
I see there is no discussion at the category talk page, no discussion at the user's talk page, and neither is the issue explained on the categories for discussion page. We are supposed to use Google translate to figure everything out ourselves. This is problematic, as the translations may not reflect the nuances of the name. Your addition of Empty page to the category page doesn't seem to further calm discussion.
Category names should be the name as used in English literature, the native name (perhaps in pinyin – I think I haven't seen category names in non-Latin scripts), or an explanatory label (according to my rough understanding of guidelines and practices). Commons is not Chinese Wikipedia, but it isn't English either. We are a multilingual community, where local phenomena must be allowed to be described and discussed in local languages. To further cooperation, English translations are welcome and should be provided where possible.
Now, what I understand, the issue is not whether the transport system in question has trains or buses, but what it should be called and how it should be categorised. If it is officially called "Train-like Service" in English, then that is a good first proposal, regardless of the nature of the actual vehicles. If there is no official English name, then we can discuss whether a translation should be used, and what translation then would be best. We might also use a descriptive name like "Rail substitute bus transport in Taiwan", but that specific name would cover also other rail substitute buses in Taiwan (such as temporary substitutes).
This is something to think about and discuss, not something where one party is right and needs to get the other to just give in.
LPfi (talk) 12:40, 2 June 2022 (UTC)
The name "類火車" are named only in Chinese and no English, so I can't see that it is officially called "Train-like Service" in English. We are assuming that he neither explains what "Train-like Service" means nor to use a descriptive name like "Rail substitute bus transport in Taiwan", and this is where the problem lies.--Kai3952 (talk) 18:33, 2 June 2022 (UTC)

Student loans

for the loans that have recently been forgiven, I am not sure if I have been part of that group. But I am part of a group that I was wondering if President Biden can see if they can get forgiveness Student loans for people who are over 50 years of age who went back to school late in life. The non traditional student. A lot of students (the younger groups have people coming in now and giving scholarships and paying for college for them and that is excellent. The non traditional student has put out over a 100,000 dollars to pay for school to better themselves so that they can make a better wage, and I am one of those people.

I am looking to see if President Biden can get a student forgiveness for persons who are 50 years or older in Student loan forgiveness.

Thank You.

Would it be legally safe to upload this advertisement of the Atari VCS port of Frogger? Copyright law required a copyright notice exclusive to the advertisement, and the only one present is this one "FROGGER game graphics © 1982 Sega Enterprises, Inc.", which are not present in the advertisement, the "graphics" for the game are actually a mockup made for the ad. The actual game didn't look like that. --Lugamo94 (talk) 14:15, 3 June 2022 (UTC) Edit: To contrast, an ad for James Bond 007 by the same company has two copyright notices "© Eon Productions/Glidrose Publications Limited 1983." and "© 1983 Parker Brothers, Beverly, MA 01915" --Lugamo94 (talk) 14:21, 3 June 2022 (UTC)

Hey! So while this may not necessarily be an issue with Commons, I was trying to get clearance to use this album art on Wikipedia under Wikipedia's non-free content policy; I've kept it at a resolution compliant with their policy but I'm struggling to figure out how to declare the file as such, so that it doesn't get deleted for improper attributions. I've seen other pieces of similar album art on Wikipedia manage to do such a thing legally on the site under the non-free content policy, so it's just a matter of me not knowing how unfortunately. Even just knowing how to upload a non-original work to Wikipedia without doing it through Commons would be nice. Any pointers would be very appreciated, thank you!

@TheWikiNick: Hi, and welcome. en:Wikipedia:File Upload Wizard gives four options for uploading directly on that project: Upload a non-free file on top in the middle; Files for upload process; Plain form for local uploads; and Old guided form (the latter three in the right column under "Wikipedia"). About a map

Appreciated community: I need your help.

I'm considering to upload this map from the Barry Lawrence Ruderman map collection. I've saw several maps of this collection in Commons. However, I don't see maps from this collection in Commons that are after 1950s, so I'm having doubts.

What can I do?

Thanks in advance and greetings from Colombia.

--Universalis (talk) 18:40, 4 June 2022 (UTC)

  • @Universalis: I don't believe there is any basis to say that map is in the public domain. I'm pretty certain it is still in copyright both in Sweden and in the U.S. It has a copyright notice, which in the U.S. should keep a 1971 document in copyright until 2066. In Sweden I believe a copyright with an organization (rather than a particular person or people) as declared author is good for 70 years, which means 2041. - Jmabel ! talk 18:55, 4 June 2022 (UTC)
@Universalis: I agree. This map was published by SAS in Stockholm, Sweden in 1971, without indication of an actual author. Per COM:Sweden, the copyright runs through 1971+70=2041.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 23:26, 4 June 2022 (UTC)

@Mukudj: Hi, and welcome. Are you aware of (and comfortable with) the potential implications associated with using a real name?   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 00:15, 8 June 2022 (UTC)
@Mukudj: You can post your real name at your user page (and if you use a global user page at meta, this will show up at all WMF projects) you can set up the upload wizard in your user preferences so that it fills in your real name as a wiki link to your account name in the author field of file description pages and parametrize the license template so that it shows your real name in the attribution entry of the license info. You can use VFC to make all this changes to your existing uploads. You can create a user license template that will show your real name. Then your real name will be shown on all file descriptions and in picsome. However, if your change your account name to your real name, then your real name will show up in all logs and in every edit of every page in every name space at every WMF project and it will show up in all your existing edits. --C.Suthorn (talk) 04:30, 8 June 2022 (UTC)

I made a consistent naming mistake in more than 10 file names and corresponding file descriptions - help wanted

I uploaded a lot of pics of the camera w:Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ18 from 2010, and made a strange but consistent mistake in ALL the filenames and ALL the file description pages. Namely, I exchanged the Z in the model number by a C, so that e.g., this filename resulted: File:Panasonic Lumix DMC-TC18 digital camera (2010), knob section seen from above.jpg. NB, in this photo, the correct number with Z can be seen printed on the item. The respective category is the only thing I correctly named. So - is it possible to exchange the string "TC18" by "TZ18" in all the files including the short and long descriptions in an automated way, and can sb please do that? Otherwise, I would do it by hand and by renaming. Pittigrilli (talk) 21:16, 11 June 2022 (UTC)

@Pittigrilli: I'll do this using VFC; it'll only take a minute or two. --bjh21 (talk) 10:21, 12 June 2022 (UTC)
@Pittigrilli: I've fixed the description and added the renaming template (which took far longer than expected to work out how to do), but I don't know how to change the captions automatically so you may have to do them by hand. Now I'm going to put my filemover hat on and deal with all the renaming requests that have just shown up. --bjh21 (talk) 10:43, 12 June 2022 (UTC)

I assume that you can get a list through the user uploads API (what are the specific API calls?). Then feed that list to wget or whatever download tool you have locally. You probably want some control over download speed etc., not to hit limits on the Commons side or slowing down your connection too much. Check control features of the tool you choose. –LPfi (talk) 10:21, 8 June 2022 (UTC)
As you might want the full-size file, the description page, the version history, the description page history and possibly some other pages, you might want to construct some URLs out of the ones you get. Probably quite easy if you have tools for semi-automatic edits to the file list you got from Commons, such as with an Emacs macro or any dedicated tools. For the file list itself, the needed edits are simple. –LPfi (talk) 10:28, 8 June 2022 (UTC)

@Olympian Xeus I really hope Jeff is joking about your name. Anyway, you found the right page already and this was almost correct too. Two things to do differently next time: 1) you tried adding your image to the "examples" section rather than the "entries" section a bit further down. 2) the line you added should have been
Knives spoons forks etc.jpg| Wide range of kitchen ware mostly for eating with
instead of
<Knives spoons forks etc.jpg| Wide range of kitchen ware mostly for eating with>
The logs say you were using the mobile interface - which unfortunately tends to suck. At least in the beginning it might be easier to do this from a normal computer rather than a phone or tablet. El Grafo (talk) 11:23, 7 June 2022 (UTC)

How to upload a new version of the picture that is bigger than 50m?

I want to upload a new version of a picture, but it's bigger than 50m so it cannot be uploaded by "Upload file". How to deal with it? MChinaGA (talk) 09:42, 9 June 2022 (UTC)

To upload a new revision of a file, you use one of the links on the description page in the "file history" section. The left link can be used for files up to <100MB and the right link ("chunked upload") can be used for files up to 4GiB. Of course you can use any upload tool that supports revision upload and chunked upload (activate both in the preferences of the tool) C.Suthorn (talk) 10:27, 9 June 2022 (UTC)
@MChinaGA: Hi, and welcome. Which picture do you have a new version of? Where did you get the new version? What is wrong with the old version? What is new about the new version? C.Suthorn's reply presupposes that you have User:Rillke/bigChunkedUpload.js installed (documentation is on the talk page). Hi I have to upload a logo from my podcast website but i can't how can I do that

Hi I have to upload a logo from my podcast website but i can't how can I do that. I says that I can but there is no help on how to grant the permission — Preceding unsigned comment added by Anselmo00 (talk • contribs) 14:20, 9 June 2022 (UTC)

@Anselmo00: So many variables here. Could you:
  • Indicate what country you are in.
  • Provide URL of a page where we can see the logo.
  • Indicate who designed the logo, and if it wasn't you have they formally transferred their copyright to you (in writing) or do they still hold copyright (which would be the default)? - Jmabel ! talk 14:44, 9 June 2022 (UTC)
@Anselmo00: Hi, and welcome. I am sorry to inform you that you have triggered Special:AbuseFilter/153 by trying to cross-wiki upload a png logo as a new user. Such uploads of png logos are not allowed at all. You indicated it's your own work. Usually when someone uploads a png logo, it's a copyright violation taken from the web. Please upload the full-size original of it per COM:HR, including any metadata, but it may be judged too complex to be under TOO in the country of origin, so you may need to license it on your official website or social media or send permission via VRT. Also, any png image will look fuzzy when scaled down (due to design decisions discussed in phab:T192744) or jaggy when scaled up, so you may want to upload an svg or jpg version, too. If you can't get a compliant license, the logo may still be uploaded to English Wikipedia in compliance with en:WP:F because we don't allow Fair Use here. If you use our Upload Wizard instead, you should be able to avoid that filter.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 14:50, 9 June 2022 (UTC)
Hi @Jeff G.
I was trying to upload the only way I knew I apologize.
So I have to upload the image from Upload Wizard thank you.
Hi @Jmabel
I'm in Italy but the podcast is mainly listened in America and Australia the page is this one https://italianwinepodcast.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/03/cin-cin-italianwinepodcast.png
but the logo That i took is from this page
https://justdothework.it/wp-content/uploads/2022/05/Italian-Wine-Podcast-Logo-per-sito-Retina.png
both sites were created by me and my colleagues can you please tell me how to grant the permission? Anselmo00 (talk) 16:03, 9 June 2022 (UTC)
@Anselmo00: That logo is definitely complicated enough that copyright applies. Whoever owns the copyright on the logo needs to choose a particular free license. Then either you can indicate that specific free license for the logo on your own web site and cite it as a source when uploading to Commons (this is usually simplest) or, if for some reason that cannot be done, then the copyright-holder can follow the instructions at COM:VRT to verify the license. - Jmabel ! talk 19:02, 9 June 2022 (UTC)

Seems to be an error in a map -- how do I indicate this?

https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/0/01/Prut_pohod_in_1711-en.png

The map referred to above, English language version (and several other language versions) identify a river in the upper right (NE) of the map as the Dniepr River. The Ukrainian and French versions of the map refer to it as the Dniestr, which is correct (I'm pretty sure of this.)

I'm sorry, but as a new user I don't know how to indicate this correctly to Wikimedia Commons. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Charles Siegel (talk • contribs) 15:21, 9 June 2022 (UTC)

You can use the template Fact disputed with an explanation as a parameter: Description of the issue or reference to the talk page. Add it to the file description page. –LPfi (talk) 18:12, 9 June 2022 (UTC)

Hi I would like to change the photo on my Wikipedia page https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Svetlana_Obucina

How should I do it?, can you please explain me in steps...I already upload my handball photo which I want to replace with current one but i think I was unsuccessful.

Thank you for help.

Svetlana Filipa9999 (talk) 11:39, 15 June 2022 (UTC)

Hi Filipa9999, first, you must read frwikis's policy on conflict of interest.
Click on the 'Edit' or 'Edit source' button at the top of the page. If you're editing source, change the |image= parameter of the Infobox to whatever image you want display there without the File: prefix. See also mw:Help:Images for guidance on how to render images. --Baggaet (talk) 11:51, 15 June 2022 (UTC)
You did something odd with File:9l90.jpg, but File:MetzSveti99.jpg seems to be uploaded OK. The problem is that this doesn't seem like "own work". Did you pick the file from the site of the Conseil Général de la Moselle? Who is [ah! the league!] France Metz in the description? That is, the description, source, author and permission need to be sorted out.
For changing the image, you should probably suggest the image change at the talk page of the article: fr:Discussion:Svetlana Obucina, as you may be seen as having a conflict of interest as pointed out by Baggaet obove.

Hi,
Thank you for your help.
I am Svetlana Obucina, I played in Metz handball from 2002-2004. I got this photo from the club as every player did, we was pictured by photographer as it is common in every big club before the beginning of the new season, I have nearly 200 photos at home same as this one, Conseil General de la Moselle is not a owner of the photo.
What I need to do now, is it explanation enough or I need to do something more, or I still need to remove the photo. 89.216.134.209 12:26, 15 June 2022 (UTC)
Hi again,
I dont know how to delete photo I posted on my page. I try to upload other photo two times but unsuccessfully. Also, I do now know where I can find one of the photos that I upload.
To answer your question more precisely France Metz in the description? Metz is team from France where I played 2 seasons from 2002 til 2004.
Did you pick the file from the site of the Conseil Général de la Moselle? No, Mossele is 89.216.134.209 14:03, 15 June 2022 (UTC)
No, this photo I got from my club, each player got approximately 200- 300 photos, and is allowed to share photos 89.216.134.209 14:04, 15 June 2022 (UTC)
Can you please guide me in steps how to delete the photo or above explanation is adequate and photo can remain.

iNaturalist pop-up is not appearing against Commons Category

Hi, I hope someone can help.

Today I created a new Commons Category:Xanthoparmelia semiviridis (see: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Xanthoparmelia_semiviridis )

I want to import images into this new category from iNaturalist, using the import button that pops up against other categories.

I found that there is a Wikidata ID for Xanthoparmelia semiviridis (see: https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q10721635 ). I have entered the Commons Category name in the relevant statement field in Wikidata, and I now see that it is blue (ie active hyperlink that goes to the correct place). So far so good.

But my problem is that the iNaturalist import button still does not appear against the new category. I am stuck.

In iNaturalist, the page name is Resurrection Lichen (Xanthoparmelia semiviridis). See: https://www.inaturalist.org/taxa/410375-Xanthoparmelia-semiviridis Do I have to use a Commons Category name that matches the iNaturalist page name to get the button to work. I would expect that onlymatching on the numeric ID would be required. ??? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Marshelec (talk • contribs) 09:10, 10 June 2022 (UTC)

Please help.

Marshelec (talk) 09:00, 10 June 2022 (UTC)

I'm not sure on how this connection works, I've never encountered the iNaturalist website and never have seen how it connects to the Commons categories. I see the page in different language than English, as English isn't my native language, I see it in Czech language, which the page name seems to be just latin nomenclature (I guess the species doesn't have a Czech name, but it has an English name). If the page name is translated, I guess the actual latin nomenclature should take a place for default name (because it is displayed in parethesis next to the national language name depending on your language). Maybe other categories have some sort of template or module that links the iNaturalist website with the category on Commons, I'm not entirely sure. Can you provide a link example to a category that has such feature? That would make the identification easier.
And for the record (and convenience link), to link to a category on Commons, you don't have to use external URL link, you can use wikitext for this as well. Link it like a normal page, only add a colon before the Category keywork. Like this: :Category:Xanthoparmelia semiviridis, which should produce this result: Category:Xanthoparmelia semiviridis. Polda18 (discussioncontributions) 09:59, 10 June 2022 (UTC)
The tool I am using is iNaturalist2Commons. User:Kaldari/iNaturalist2Commons. I now see that there is a link for reporting problems with the tool, so I will try that.Marshelec (talk) 20:37, 10 June 2022 (UTC)
Might give it a try, I guess. Added it to my common.js. One question though. Does iNaturalist allow also non-free content? I guess that's silly to think like this, but it could be the tool can somehow detect if there are some incompatible licenses? I don't know how the tool works, if it just adds the button based on Wikidata informations (I noticed that there is a property that defines the iNaturalist ID for the nomenclature, and that there is a Commons category associated with it). And looking at the iNaturalist page, I can see that some of the photos are fully copyrighted. These unfortunately cannot be on Commons. The ones labeled with "Some rights reserved" and corresponding CC BY label, those are allowed. Those sporting "All rights reserved", these are no-goes. Some are even in public domain, or CC suite compatible with public domain. In fact, there is one photo in this category on iNaturalist that is copyrighted, and it is this one: https://www.inaturalist.org/photos/1394071. Does the tool automatically determine which photos are allowed on Commons based on the license tag? Because I doubt that the tool would be even allowed if the author didn't somehow make sure that there isn't a possibility to upload a copyrighted photo. problem uploading photo's

Hey guys,
I'm trying (for the first time) to upload some photo's I just took but they look terrible
I took them from google drive and dropped them in the Upload Wizard but even there I can see they're not even legible. Help me please. Dutchy45 (talk) 10:23, 10 June 2022 (UTC)

@Dutchy45: Hi, and welcome. Can you upload the photos directly from your phone with COM:APP or email/transfer the complete unretouched photos to a device that can upload directly? Google Photos can reduce resolution if you make certain choices. Also, the Upload Wizard always shows very small previews (when it shows previews). @Jeff G.: I've succesfully oploaded my photo (World Federation of Diamond Bourses.jpg) to commons. A photo was requested for en:World Federation of Diamond Bourses. (see talk page) I tried editing it in, but it came out huge. (Also the reason I'm not linking it here.) How do I change that to a good size for a WP article? Dutchy45 (talk) 11:46, 10 June 2022 (UTC)
A cool description here
A link (not inclusion, just link) can be done just by adding a colon before the File keyword, like this: :File:World Federation of Diamond Bourses.jpg, and it comes out like this: File:World Federation of Diamond Bourses.jpg. Note that it doesn't show the image itself, only a link to it. To show the image itself, however with a reduced size, I suggest you to use the "thumb" keyword in the media inclusion syntax, and of course you should provide a description, like this: . You can see the result on the right. The float aligns to right by default (or might align to left by default in scripts writing from right to left, not tested by me), you can change this by adding a "left" or "right" keyword in the arguments. Each argument is separated by a pipe character (|), more informations can be read here: mw:Help:Files. Polda18 (discussioncontributions) 12:19, 10 June 2022 (UTC)

@Jeff G.: Thanks for your suggestion for the app. I'm going to install it on my Android devices. I also noticed that Wikimedia does not provide an iOS app for iPhones and iPads. Is this due to Apple's restrictions on apps in the App Store? I do not posses an iPhone myself, but I am a little concerned about this to be honest, given the fact that iPhone users cannot install apps from other sources than App Store, unless they enable developer mode (which is a little bit tricky). "Woodlands" category

1) At Category:Woodlands, Category:Mediterranean forests, woodlands, and scrub‎ is sorted under "•", appearing at the end of the list. Can anyone see any reason for this choice?

@MPF: OK, thanks. ITookSomePhotos (talk) 17:33, 11 June 2022 (UTC)

2) I created container Category:Woodlands by country and placed various pre-existing country categories under it, but Category:Mediterranean forests, woodlands, and scrub‎ does not fit there, the Mediterranean not being a country. What is the best way to deal with this? Create Category:Woodlands by region? Leave Category:Mediterranean forests, woodlands, and scrub‎ as a top-level child of Category:Woodlands? Something else?

I'd leave it where it is. But Nordvorpommersche Waldlandschaft needs a Category:Woodlands in Germany to go into the by country category - MPF (talk) 23:02, 10 June 2022 (UTC)
@MPF: OK. I suppose another thing I could potentially do is change Category:Woodlands by country to Category:Woodlands by country or region, but I don't know how standard that would be. Anyway, I'll leave it how it is for now. I overlooked "Nordvorpommersche Waldlandschaft"; I've categorised that now as you suggest. ITookSomePhotos (talk) 17:33, 11 June 2022 (UTC)

Copyright on File:Vivaldi Winter mvt 1 Allegro non molto - The USAF Concert.ogg

Hello. I tried using this track in a video I made and I was told by YouTube that someone under the name Ear Parade from SoundAudio Holdings LLC was the owner of the track. Is this incorrect on YouTube's part or is it incorrect on here? Here is the page link: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Vivaldi_Winter_mvt_1_Allegro_non_molto_-_The_USAF_Concert.ogg — Preceding unsigned comment added by Kohlolufsen (talk • contribs) 20:47, 5 June 2022 (UTC)

  • @Kohlolufsen: Hard to know for sure, but probably YouTube is wrong. If it's USAF musicians performing a public-domain work, then it is public domain (U.S. military doing their jobs don't get copyright). - Jmabel ! talk 00:03, 6 June 2022 (UTC)
The thing is that YouTube uses something called Content ID, which identifies songs based on sound waveform fingerprinting (kind of like how Shazam works as well). If the sound even remotely sounds like another recording, which IS copyrighted, then YouTube puts down a copyright claim or strike, depending on what copyright holder decides to use. You can of course file in a dispute and link to the original source (I also suppose it is linked in the video description), and a human reviewer takes a look at it and listens in. Then the dispute is eighter approved or declined. I understand it is frustrating. Polda18 (discussioncontributions) 06:55, 6 June 2022 (UTC)
  • Our file should have information on the PD-USGov part. Now it looks that the only potential copyright lies with the composer. I don't recognise the "USAF Concert Band", and even if I guess USAF refers to the US air forces, I have no idea of the band's relation to the government, and whether I can trust there being no contractors involved. –LPfi (talk) 13:15, 6 June 2022 (UTC)
    • "The Concert Band is the official symphonic wind ensemble of the United States Air Force".[1] It appears that its musicians perform as part of their official duties, so PD-USGov would apply to their recordings. However, this recording clearly includes string instruments and was not recorded by a wind ensemble. I suspect that the YouTube uploader has incorrectly attributed the file, and this may be a copyrighted recording by other performers. Verbcatcher (talk) 02:56, 14 June 2022 (UTC)

Help reversing a category move to an invalid name

Hi. While investigating Commons:Deletion requests/File:Ann Jane Arko Anny Photoshoot in Yellow Top in April 12 2015.jpg, I noticed that the nominator had been trying to defeat Commons:INUSE by removing the file from Wikidata[3] and also moving the category here at Commons from Category:Ann Jane Arko-Gorchakova to Category:Category with no files or photos.[4] Because of the new redirect, I can't move the category (and edit history) back to the original location. What is the best way to fix this? From Hill To Shore (talk) 23:51, 12 June 2022 (UTC)

@From Hill To Shore: I think (meaning I haven't tested this) you should be able to first rename the redirect to a temporary name without leaving a redirect, and then rename the lost category back to its correct name (probably also without leaving a redirect). The spare redirect can then be tagged with Bad name so it gets deleted. Do let me know if this works. --bjh21 (talk) 00:04, 13 June 2022 (UTC)
@Bjh21: Thanks for the suggestion. Unfortunately, I didn't get an option to not create a redirect and the guidance on the page after I clicked "move" said a redirect would be created automatically. Instead I have opted for an G6 to clear the existing redirect before moving the category to its old name. From Hill To Shore (talk) 00:49, 13 June 2022 (UTC)
@From Hill To Shore: Ah. Apparently I can suppress redirects when moving categories because I'm a filemover, but most users can't. Apologies for the confusion. --bjh21 (talk) 09:33, 13 June 2022 (UTC)

Flagging copyright and Wikipedia logo usage concerns

File:Impacted wisdom teeth summary.ogv was created and uploaded in March 2014 by User:Ian Furst. Ian has not been active on Commons since 2020. There are (at least) a couple of issues that I'm not sure how to flag.

The video starts and ends with the Wikipedia "puzzle ball" logos prominently displayed, implying official Wikipedia/Wikimedia endorsement or affiliation. Permission is not mentioned on the file information page.

The video also incorporates a number of medical images and renderings (radiographs, CT renderings, clinical photos, etc.), but does not provide specific sourcing info or attribution for any of them. (The file info page just says "pictures from article and commons".)

What's the appropriate route to addressing these issues? I haven't spent a lot of time at Commons, and I wasn't sure what the local process is. Cheers, TenOfAllTrades (talk) 01:58, 13 June 2022 (UTC)

  • Sourcing stated to be "pictures from article and commons" which is entirely inappropriate (not specific sourcing and no attribution). As an "oldbie" admin, this seems a clear case to me, so I'm deleting it. Nominating similar items for deletion listing discussion is appropriate. Thanks for your attention! Cheers, -- Infrogmation of New Orleans (talk) 02:07, 13 June 2022 (UTC)
  • If such a video is good otherwise, one might be able to remove the intro with the logos, find the images ("the article" is probably the en-wp one on the theme, and with good luck the rest of the images are from the related category or otherwise findable). You could add a trail with sources and attribution, and add that also to the file description page. Some work even in the best case, so unless the video is valuable, it is probably not worthwhile. –LPfi (talk) 16:00, 13 June 2022 (UTC)

Uploading a better png

So I want to upload a logo of Adit Sopo Jarwo with a better transparent png workings and a (slightly) better resolution, because the ones I saw in the Wikipedia page had a sloppy job of the transparent png. Am I allowed to do so? -- Enriko Henri (talk)

Hi Enriko Henri. If the the logo you're referring to is the one being used in the Wikipedia article en:Adit Sopo Jarwo, then that logo has been uploaded locally to English Wikipedia as non-free content. Commons doesn't accept non-free content of any type as explained here, which means you can't really upload an improved version of the logo to Commons. You can upload an better version locally to English Wikipedia if you want, but there are lots of restrictions placed on non-free files and you will need to make sure this new version meets these criteria (including this one) in order for it to avoid being deleted, or reduced in size or resolution. Finally, for future reference, it's better to add your Commons' signature to the ends of your posts instead of the beginnings of your posts. -- Marchjuly (talk) 12:27, 13 June 2022 (UTC)
Alright then, I'll try to follow the criteria
And also for some reason I placed the signature on the beginning ;p Maybe I was a bit tired. But thanks for the information! Enriko Henri (talk) 09:10, 14 June 2022 (UTC)

Copyright help regarding File:Scrap Mechanic Cover.png

Hello, I am trying to upload an image of the Scrap Mechanic (video game) cover to the main infobox in the Scrap Mechanic Wikipedia article. However, when I do upload it and license it under fair use the image gets removed as the fair use license is “not” accepted on Wikipedia. Despite that, there are many Wikipedia articles that use video game covers in the infoboxes that are licensed under fair use.

How would I be able to license this image under fair use and get it accepted?

--Joshua Grech (talk) 23:17, 14 June 2022 (UTC)

@Joshua Grech: Hi, and welcome. en:Wikipedia:File Upload Wizard gives four options for uploading directly on that project (rather than here, where we don't accept Fair Use on Commons): Upload a non-free file on top in the middle; Files for upload process; Plain form for local uploads; and Old guided form (the latter three in the right column under "Wikipedia"). Sadly, we still don't have an easy way to transfer files from here to there.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 23:50, 14 June 2022 (UTC)

How to change Wikimedia Commons Licensing?

Hello guys,

I mistakenly used the CC BY-SA 4.0 license for my company logo. I don't want anyone can misuse our trademark, so what license should I use? and how to change it now on Wikimedia Commons?

Ref: https://imgur.com/lWL2SMC — Preceding unsigned comment added by Mareanie (talk • contribs) 06:12, 11 June 2022 (UTC)

Hi Mareanie. en:Copyright and en:trademark are two separate concepts and there are actually lots of trademarked logos uploaded to Commons as explained in COM:Trademarks. Commons is mainly concerned about the copyright status of a file and not really concerned about trademarks. However, the only types of free licenses that Commons accepts do allow files to be downloaded and reused without a lot of restrictions as explained here. So, if you're worried about others using your company's logo in ways that your company might not approve, you probably shouldn't upload it to Commons. If you've already uploaded a file and you now feel doing so was a mistake, you can request that it be deleted per speedy deletion criteria G7 if you didn't upload the file more than six days ago; if seven days have passed since you uploaded the file, you will need to file a regular deletion request. -- Marchjuly (talk) 09:51, 11 June 2022 (UTC)
Thank you so much for the guidance, but can you please tell me how I can use the speedy deletion? Like how to use this tag <reason in prose> and where to use it? I am a newbie to wikis. Please help me. Mareanie (talk) 11:25, 11 June 2022 (UTC)
Hi again Mareanie. What you want to do is go to the file's page and click on "Edit" at the top of the page to open the page's editing window. In that window, add the template syntax Db-author to the top of the window. Click on Show preview to check that the template is working properly and then click on Publish changes if everything looks OK. You should, however, understand that in some cases a logo can be considered to be too simple to be eligible for copyright protection depending on the threshold of originality for the country of origin/first publication. Since Fininsider appears to based out of India, it's not clear whether the logo is creative enough for copyright protection per Indian copyright law. This doesn't mean that the logo can't be trademarked, but it could mean that someone else could possibly try and argue that the logo is still OK for Commons regardless of it being trademarked and regardless of whether your company wants the file deleted. -- Marchjuly (talk) 12:30, 11 June 2022 (UTC)
Thanks for your help. I have successfully deleted the image from Wikimedia commons.
I have one last question: I am trying to reupload the file again with proper rights but am confused a little bit.
Wikimedia only has CC licenses, and as I know, with a CC license, anyone can use it without the owner's permission. Is there any way to protect my company logo from others? I don't want anyone can use it without our consent. How can I do that?
Ref: https://imgur.com/04lNI8N Mareanie (talk) 01:25, 15 June 2022 (UTC)
  • @Mareanie: Commons is a repository of free-licensed and public domain material, allowing anyone to use it (including making derivative works). If you don't want it reused, don't upload it to Commons!
  • That said, if it's your company logo, it presumably is trademarked, limiting its use in some circumstances. You can mark it with Trademarked.
  • If you are going ahead to upload it (which, again, I really don't recommend if you don't want it reused), whoever owns the copyright (whether that is your company or the graphic artist who designed the logo) needs to choose a license and send permission as described at COM:VRT. - Jmabel ! talk 15:29, 15 June 2022 (UTC)

Deleting and replacing an image

Hello, I work for Rebecca Rusch and she would like the image that is currently on her Wikipedia page to be deleted and replaced with a more flattering image that features her sponsors. How do I delete the current image and replace with a new one? Erin Spong (talk) 19:18, 15 June 2022 (UTC)

Hi Erin Spong. Commons and (English) Wikipedia are sister projects operated by the en:Wikimedia Foundation, but they are separate with their own respective policies and guidelines. Commons is primarily concerned with the copyright status of the file's it hosts, and leaves determining whether to use or how to use those photos in Wikipedia articles up to Wikipedia and it's editors. In short, there's no guarantee that any photo you upload to Commons will be automatically used on Wikipedia. The first thing you should do is read en:Wikipedia:Conflict of interest and en:Wikipedia:Paid-contribution disclosure and make sure you comply with the guidance given before even trying to make any edits to en:Rebecca Rusch. Undisclosed paid editing is a violation of the Wikimedia Foundation's Terms of Use and often leads to accounts being blocked on Wikipedia. Once you do that, you can explain your reasons for wanting to change the photo at en:Talk:Rebecca Rusch and see whether there's a consensus to do so. You can also make an en:Wikipedia:Edit request on the article's talk page about changing the photo. The current photo being used doesn't really need to be deleted per se since its licensing appears (at least first glance) to be OK for Commons, but you can request that it be replaced with something else. Just for reference, you should be able to use this account for editing on Wikipedia. Just log in using the account name and your password. If, however, you decide to create a new account for Wikipedia, just remember that things like conflict of interest and paid-contribution disclosures apply to the person doing the editing and not the account that's being used.
As for that "something else" to replace the current photo, assuming that you mean File:2019 REBECCAS PRIVATE IDAHO RPI LINDA GUERRETTE RPI82819 QSR social-1316.jpg that you just uploaded, you're going to need to provide some verification that the file has been released as licensed. Generally, it's the person taking a photo who is considered to be the copyright holder of said photo, and not the subject of the photo, as explained in Commons:Licensing; so, unless you represent the copyright holder of the photo, you shouldn't really be uploading their work without their explicit consent. If you've received their consent, then Commons needs a way to verify their COM:CONSENT for the file to be uploaded under such a licensed in order to avoid its deletion. There are a couple of ways this can be done and they are explained in Commons:Volunteer Response Team, but the easiest might simply be to follow the instructions given in the template I added to the file's page. Once the copyright status has been sorted out, you can then request on the talk page for the article's talk page that this file be added to the article and that the other one be removed. -- Marchjuly (talk) 20:04, 15 June 2022 (UTC)

Hi! I'd like to upload a photo to a biographical article that doesn't have one yet.

The article for Deltina Hay was recently suggested to me for improvement-- I noticed on the talk page that a photo of Hay was requested, as one is not currently present. After a quick google image search, I found a portrait-quality image which probably came from the back cover of one of her novels. How should I go about making sure that I have the correct permissions to upload it? I want to do this by the book. Atomic putty? Rien! (talk) 13:08, 17 June 2022 (UTC)

You'd have to get into contact with the photographer or publisher, to check who has the right to license it, and contact that person. You could also ask Hay directly, whether she has an image she would like to illustrate her article on Wikipedia and has the rights to license. If they are willing, follow the advice on Commons:VRT. If you get the image from her, make sure she understands that owning the photo does not make her the copyright owner, that the licence must be valid for anyone, and that you cannot guarantee that it will be used in Wikipedia (until there are alternatives, it is of course likely).
There is of course no guarantee that anyone is willing to license their images. Ask if you have further questions, and stay tuned for advice from others. Good luck!

Books Untraceable

I was searching for the books authored in Malayalam language by Dr. Suvarna Nalappat as the author herself instructed me. But, none of her books are found. Please help to find them. Nalappadan (talk) 14:06, 17 June 2022 (UTC)

Hello. Wikimedia Commons has only media that are out of copyright or come with a free licence. All of these published books by Suvarna Nalappat, however, seem to be copyrighted an non-free. That is why we don't have any of them here. De728631 (talk) 14:11, 17 June 2022 (UTC)

How to change outdated file name?

The file name of https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Dasycercus_byrnei.JPG is outdated (the genus Dasycercus is a synonym of the commonly accepted Dasyuroides). The file name should thus be changed to "Dasyuroides_byrnei.JPG" in my opinion. How can this be done? (I've changed the English image description already.) Found my picture on wikipedia with incorrect citations

Hi,

I'm a photographer and I just found some of my pictures on wiki, being creddited by someone else. I'm new to wiki and I'm not sure who I can contact to fix the violation?

Thanks! Samboddi (talk) 14:23, 16 June 2022 (UTC)

You can ask here, if you include links to the pictures (at commons), or you can nominate the files for deletion: Go to the description page of the image, on the left side there is a link "Nominate for deletion". A text field will pop up, there enter the rationale: "the image is not free, it was taken from http:/...your website with the image... and it is not freely licensed
If you want to have the image kept, but correct the attribution, then go to the image description and make appropriate changes. Insert in the text field "source" a link to your website where you published the image (before it was uploaded here), as a proof, that your changes are correct, insert the same link in the "edit description" field. --C.Suthorn (talk) 14:35, 16 June 2022 (UTC)

Hi, I'm still getting used to the wikipedia user interface and it is not easy. This message is about the images that are wrongfully used. I can answer the questions that I saw about where the image came from. The castle was for sale, the images I took were for the publishing on real estate websites. I also got the same image on my instagram with a date that is before the uploaded date on wiki. I also still have the RAW files so I can prove I have the original. Though I'm not sure to who I need to prove it and I also don't know how to transfer large files over wiki. I'm not used to message boards and having my replies in public. Please let me know who I can email on which adress to provide more info, I'll happily do so. Samboddi (talk) 09:39, 18 June 2022 (UTC)

Category "Branta of the United Kingdom"

Category:Branta of the United Kingdom is apparently misclassified under Category:Branta canadensis by country‎. I could create Category:Branta by country‎ and put it there, but do we actually want that? Do we want "Branta by country" classifications as well as "Branta X by country"? I'm not sure how this should be dealt with. ITookSomePhotos (talk) 17:24, 16 June 2022 (UTC)

@De728631: Looking now at Category:Branta by country, it has "Branta canadensis in the United States‎" and "Branta canadensis in the United Kingdom‎" (and presumbably many more, by extension, as and when they are added) included twice, once via the "Branta of ~" subcat, and once via the "Branta canadensis by country‎" subcat. Copyright Template Creation Requested

According to Section 183 of Hong Kong's Copyright Ordinance, Hong Kong ordinances (and subsidiary legislations) enter the public domain 50 years after publication (and certainly will fall under PD-EdictGov). Recently I scanned some ordinances in 1970 and 1971, and intended to upload them to Commons. As there are no suitable copyright templates, I'd like to ask if there're somebody who can create one for me?

Also preferably, I think this newly-created template can be linked to the corresponding copyright template on English Wikisource through Wikidata. Regards.廣九直通車 (talk) 13:26, 17 June 2022 (UTC)

@廣九直通車: Wouldn't this be covered by PD-HKGov? De728631 (talk) 13:29, 17 June 2022 (UTC)
@De728631: No, PD-HKGov doesn't cover ordinances. The copyright protection period for ordinances (publish+50 years) differs from ordinary governmental works.廣九直通車 (talk) 03:49, 18 June 2022 (UTC)

cropping out watermark with different name from flickr origin

I want to crop out the watermark from this image using COM:CROPT, overwriting the original.

The watermark contains an abbreviated name different to the name of the flickr account from which the photo originated though. What should I do with this abbreviated name?

I'm thinking I should change the name in the author field to the abbreviated name (and of course keep the same link), but I'm unsure if this is the best thing to do. I read COM:WM however it didn't provide advice on what to do in this situation. Neuroxic (talk) 13:14, 19 June 2022 (UTC)

Use of watermark that do not destroy usability or promote a website or something is not prohibited, only discouraged (because it may deter from usability, but doesn't destroy it). I would leave it there, or use Photoshop to remove it. If the image comes from Flickr, they might have different policies of file uploads and use of watermarks may not be prohibited nor discouraged there. I would be careful with removal of watermarks though, because it might be seen as property theft. If the watermark is small and barely visible, I wouldn't bother with removing it. Polda18 (discussioncontributions) 07:00, 20 June 2022 (UTC)
It did make the photo less useful, and it is now removed. The licence explicitly allows distributing modified versions, and attribution in any way suitable for the media, which the attribution on the file description page is. If there are legal problems with this, they should be explored, as removal of such watermarks is our standard practice. The only issue, as I see it, is that we need to add the corresponding text to the file description text, and it was unclear whether it should replace the previous author line or be added in some other way. –LPfi (talk) 10:40, 20 June 2022 (UTC)

Are they all in the same category? If so, go to that category and you can use the "Perform batch task" option from the tools menu on the left edge of your screen. Select the category and then choose "Action: prepend any text" in the dropdown menu. In the text box below that, you can then enter the template string License review. How can I upload our company's new logo to our Wikipedia page?

Our company just did a rebrand launch and we'd like to upload our new logo to the Wikipedia page. I don't understand how copyright and licensing work here. The logo jpeg is ours, we have the copyright (Since it is OUR company), so how do I upload? Not clear. Jenna CIA-ICA (talk) 19:08, 23 June 2022 (UTC)

The short answer (without seeing the logo) is that you probably can't upload it here on Commons, as it is required that all images here be released under a free license. What you can do is upload it at Wikipedia as "fair use". This is how most logos find their way onto Wikipedia. More information is here. Beeblebrox (talk) 19:50, 23 June 2022 (UTC)

Statistics of media views

Hello, I'm wondering about statistics on usage of Commons files. I read this previous archived question which suggest Glamorous and other GLAM-tools.

I'm wondering if there is separate statistics on actual image viewings, and page views where the image is shown? If I understand correctly, Glamorous is showing page views of the Wikipedia articles? Also, what does it mean when Glamorous says `xx,x% of all files` on the "Global file usage"-tab? Any idea how often it updates the stats it shows, or is it real-time?

I have also found the tool pageviews.wmcloud.org/mediaviews - this mentioned media views - is media views different from page views? This mediaviews-tool only gives statistics on individual Commons-files - it would be nice to get wider overviews.

If Mediaviews is separate from page views (as I understand it is), does any tool gives media views per images in a Commons-category similar to Glamorous?

Or is it possible to request mediaview-statistics from an API for an own list of files - i.e. more than the 10 that the tool I mentioned handles? I found this 2018-discussion about it, but not much more. Thanks for tips! Robertsilen (talk) 09:47, 21 June 2022 (UTC)

Pageviews, MediaViews and other tools (like Glamorous) are based on the MediaWiki API for statistics about WMF sites. You can try out API calls in the API sandbox. Documentation about API calls can be found at the mediawiki.org site (like wikimedia, only written the other way around). Most API calls accept a parameter to get up to 500 results (instead of the default (in most cases 50), and calls that typically result in more than 500 answers often return an additional "continue" parameter, that will allow to iterate the call to get additional answers. --C.Suthorn (talk) 16:30, 24 June 2022 (UTC)

@Captain Thomas O'Doherty: Hi, and welcome. I am sorry to inform you that you have triggered Special:AbuseFilter/153 by trying to cross-wiki upload smaller (<50,000 bytes or <2,000,000 pixels) pdf and jpg photos as a new user. Each photo you tried to upload is smaller, and you indicated it's your own work. Usually when someone uploads smaller photos, they are copyright violations taken from the web. If you took the photos yourself, please upload the full-size originals of them per COM:HR, including EXIF metadata. If you did not take the photos, please see Commons:Licensing for why we can't accept them as-is, and have the photographer(s) license them on their official websites or social media or send the photos and permissions via VRT with carbon copies to you. If you can't get a compliant license, a photo may still be uploaded to English Wikipedia in compliance with en:WP:F because we don't allow Fair Use here. If you use our Upload Wizard instead, you should be able to avoid that filter. We also accept licenses from photographers' heirs.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 13:26, 24 June 2022 (UTC)

Updating an image file

Hello, I have been recently interested in updating an image file (https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Motorway_D1_SK_map.svg) which is outdated, whilst giving credit to the original author if needed. The update includes changing a few colors in the original image to make it more recent (as you can see in its file history). I am still really new to commons and wikipedia in general, so I don't really understand how it all works here. No, I've never worked with SVG files. I was just clarifying something that had given me a few seconds pause in understanding what you were asking for. - Jmabel ! talk 19:34, 17 June 2022 (UTC)
If you go to the file description page (which you linked), there is a link to the "original file". Right click on it (or whatever) and choose download. Then do whatever changes you want to do, with a suitable SVG editor. Now the question is whether to upload the updated file under the same or another name. Usually I would say under a new name, as usually when there have been significant changes. Some Wikipedia article might have a caption telling "as of February 2021". However, in this case, it seems updated versions have been uploaded several times already. So go back to the file description page and down to the list of versions. Just after that list, in fine print, there is the option to upload a new version. Click it, choose your updated file from your browser's file manager, type a suitable comment ("updated to the situation 2022-06-18" or whatever) and click upload. That's it, more or less. –LPfi (talk) 20:35, 17 June 2022 (UTC)

Question regarding license and appropriateness

I wish to upload the image in this tweet, and as per Twitter’s Terms of Service here, the image looks like it can be republished anywhere else. The image has been used by the Australian Institute of International Affairs here, and a very similar image by the London School of Economics here.
The user that posted the image cannot be contacted by direct message on Twitter due to their privacy settings, and they make no mention of alternate contact details.
Considering how Commons/Wikipedia host a variety of parody/adaptations of flags, and this particular image representing the Anglosphere, is it appropriate to have this image uploaded?
Does a mere collage work of national flags fulfill the originality requirements for one to hold copyright?
— Preceding unsigned comment added by MxYamato (talk • contribs) 14:33, 25 June 2022 (UTC) Also, how about the licensing requirements, does this image meet them? MxYamato (talk) 14:30, 25 June 2022 (UTC)

  • @MxYamato: I believe you misunderstand Twitter's terms of service. Twitter itself gets an unlimited license to your content you post on Twitter, but no one else does. - Jmabel ! talk 15:50, 25 June 2022 (UTC)
@Jmabel I have read the archives regarding the use of media from tweets, and I see your point. Could you please comment on the following too:
I wish to ask if a mere collage work of national flags would fulfill originality requirements and therefore become copyright-able? I notice that works consisting of simple geometry, panels of colors, and derivative works of freely-licensed media/equivalents and such similar media are generally also considered to be eligible for uploading. Since this image is a collage work of media that are all individually already present on Commons, can this derivative work be uploaded as well? MxYamato (talk) 16:05, 25 June 2022 (UTC)
    • @MxYamato: The shadings there are definitely enough to make that image copyrightable. The arrangement itself is not. I'm sure if you want to create a similar image by literally cutting and pasting from existing PD images (and, optionally, adding shading etc. of your own) that would be fine. - Jmabel ! talk 16:26, 25 June 2022 (UTC)

@Chainwit.: Hi. You could try posting at User talk:CommonsDelinker/commands or asking a filemover to use justReplace and clean up after themselves at User:CommonsDelinker/commands/filemovers. Both have the same caveats about templates and removal of "File:" mentioned elsewhere on that page. justReplace also may take many iterations before the red dialogs are eliminated and the usage counts per globalusagecount and Special:GlobalUsage are reduced to replacements you must do manually. I did that for you using justReplace with both of the replacements you mentioned.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 23:05, 25 June 2022 (UTC)
Please do not ask at User talk:CommonsDelinker/commands to replace a PNG with an SVG. As it says there, "No replacement of images in other formats with SVGs. To avoid World War III, CommonsDelinker will ignore a command to replace an image if the new image is in an SVG format and the original is not." - Jmabel ! talk 23:48, 25 June 2022 (UTC)
@Jmabel: Sorry, I forgot that, and did not intend to start World War III.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 00:18, 26 June 2022 (UTC)

Copyright help regarding File:Mira profil.jpg

--A.Alex10 (talk) 20:39, 23 June 2022 (UTC) Hello, If an email will be sent to the email address permissions-commons@wikimedia.org to confirm that we can use this photo, how can I update the license? --A.Alex10 (talk) 20:39, 23 June 2022 (UTC)

@A.Alex10: Hello. Once the mail has been sent, you can edit the file page and add two code templates in the "information" box where it says |permission=:
  1. with the date of the email inserted there.
  2. A licence template that corresponds to the free licence that was announced in the email by the copyright holder. Please note also that "use for Wikipedia" is not sufficient. All uploads at Commons need to be free to use for anyone and any purpose including commercial reuse. De728631 (talk) 21:44, 23 June 2022 (UTC)
After that you may also remove the tag on top of the page. That one is a dated deletion notice, so please have the permission email sent within a week or we need to delete the photo. De728631 (talk) 21:47, 23 June 2022 (UTC)
Thank you, they said that they will send the email tomorrow so I put the code for permission A.Alex10 (talk) 22:03, 23 June 2022 (UTC)
@De728631: Thanks, but addition of is much simpler than your part 1 above.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 22:08, 23 June 2022 (UTC)
Hello, it seems that they won't send the email, they said that they can't give exclusivity to Wikipedia... A.Alex10 (talk) 06:43, 24 June 2022 (UTC)
@A.Alex10: We don't need an exclusive license, please have them see COM:CONSENT.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 12:26, 24 June 2022 (UTC)
Thank you, I did send them this link before and I sent it again, but they said that they don't want any complications. I really don't know what can I do more. Mira is my favourite singer I really wanted her to have a good and beautiful photo. Thank you very much for the answers. A.Alex10 (talk) 10:02, 26 June 2022 (UTC)
@A.Alex10: Perhaps you could explain to them and her manager that article ro:Mira (cântăreață) has had 4,597 pageviews in the past 30 days (and article it:Mira (cantante) has had another 118), and that MIRA may get more famous and may garner more hits on her Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, Spotify, and TikTok pages if she has licensed photos on her Wikipedia articles.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 11:47, 26 June 2022 (UTC)

Reporting users at Meta

Hi. I protected a category recently and I am being flamed by MetaWiki users including StrikingYouBack who created https://encyclopediadramatica.online/User:Gbawden and another user who bombarded me with emails. How do I go about reporting these users on Meta? TIA Gbawden (talk) 06:56, 26 June 2022 (UTC)

@Gbawden: I'm sorry to read of your troubles. You may report meta-specific vandalism using this link or generally by posting at m:WM:RFH. You may report crosswiki vandalism by posting in the appropriate section on m:srg.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 11:30, 26 June 2022 (UTC)
StrikingYouBack is now blocked. Other than that, I don't think you have any recourse outside of a lawsuit. That is seriously nasty. - Jmabel ! talk 15:54, 26 June 2022 (UTC)
The same happened to me. On Friday I received a wiki-mail from meta-user MIGHTYDESTRUCTOR extorting the revert of edits (which I didn't perform) of another admin on Commons (not Gbawden) who was already blackmailed by an encyclopediadramatica-entry. Some 24 hours later I received a wiki-mail from meta-user StrikingYouBack notifying me about an highly defamatory entry on encyclopediadramatica about me created by an ED-account carrying my Wikimedia-username. Another 24 hours later I was notified by Commons-system about several attempts (unsuccessful) to break into my Wikimedia user account, which is likely an action of the same person(s) behind the extortion-attempt. Taking into account the fact that at least 3 active administrators are already affected, it would be appropriate IMO if T&S were to take action in this case.--Túrelio (talk) 18:53, 26 June 2022 (UTC)
@Túrelio: I had the same email - should probably report them too Gbawden (talk) 06:54, 27 June 2022 (UTC)

In addition, I am sorry to inform you that you have triggered Special:AbuseFilter/153 by trying to cross-wiki upload a smaller (<50,000 bytes or <2,000,000 pixels) jpg photo as a new user while leaving the summary intact. The photo you tried to upload is smaller, and you indicated it's your own work. Usually when someone uploads a smaller photo, it is a copyright violation taken from the web. If you took the photo yourself, please upload the full-size original of it per COM:HR, including EXIF metadata. If you did not take the photo, please see Commons:Licensing for why we can't accept it as-is, and have the photographer post Commons:Licensing compliant permission for such work on their website or social media presence or send the photo and permission via VRT with a carbon copy to you. If you can't get a compliant license, the photo may still be uploaded to English Wikipedia in compliance with en:WP:F because we don't allow Fair Use here. If you change the summary or use our Upload Wizard instead, you should be able to avoid that filter.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 11:29, 28 June 2022 (UTC)

Multiple duplicate images - Eric Friedebach

I have been sorting aircraft museum image categories in to specific aircraft types displayed at each museum, during this process I have noticed many duplicate images by Eric Friedebach. The multiple images are making the task harder especially as one set are poorly labelled/identified. Examples can be seen in Category:Douglas B-23 Dragon at Fantasy of Flight. What seems to have happened is that his photos (over 3,000 on his Flickr account) were uploaded by Panoramio upload bot around April 2017 and then uploaded again by User:Ser Amantio di Nicolao around August 2021. The second set have good descriptions and would be the images that should be kept, the file sizes are slightly larger, have possibly been lightly edited for colour/exposure etc. There is another set of files with the image name pre-fixed 'Eric Friedebach', I don't know if these have been duplicated.

As there are potentially hundreds of images involved I'm looking for advice on the best way to deal with the problem, tagging each image individually isn't really practical. Perhaps all images taken by Eric could be categorised as the photographer and then split the duplicates and tag the category for deletion? I have the Ajax deletion gadget installed but never used it. Can a bot find the duplicates? Many thanks Nimbus227 (talk) 11:06, 26 June 2022 (UTC)

Eric Friedebach has 4,700 images on Commons, there is another set of his aircraft images uploaded by User:Tm which I think are not duplicated. Nimbus227 (talk) 11:19, 26 June 2022 (UTC)
In Category:Aircraft at the Kansas Aviation Museum half of the 100 images are duplicates, probably a better example. Nimbus227 (talk) 11:35, 26 June 2022 (UTC)
I'm guessing by the lack of replies that this is a difficult problem to solve, I looked at 'perform batch edit' which would probably work nicely if there were no requirement to tag the images to be kept (most of these have already been diffused into sub-categories making them tricky to find). One solution which would at least take the images out of circulation would be to round them up in a duplicates category for each museum and then, eventually, place all those categories in to one pot. Flora

Should I use Category:Flora of the Isle of Wight for flowers and plants that people have planted in their gardens, or is this only for the natural flora? ITookSomePhotos (talk) 17:06, 28 June 2022 (UTC)

Good point. I do still wonder, though, conceptually, whether the "flora" of a place does include planted or introduced species. Wonkipedia says "generally the naturally occurring (indigenous) native plants", but in practice many plants seen growing "wild" have actually been introduced by humans at some point in history, so I wonder whether that criterion would be too strict. OTOH, calling someone's garden flowers "flora of the Isle of Wight" seems slightly odd. ITookSomePhotos (talk) 21:08, 28 June 2022 (UTC)
How about Category:Flora on the Isle of Wight?   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 21:49, 28 June 2022 (UTC)
That may be anomalous; AFAICT overwhelmingly these categories are named "Flora of ~" (and certainly, I would suggest, we do not want both "Flora of the Isle of Wight" and "Flora on the Isle of Wight"). ITookSomePhotos (talk) 19:47, 29 June 2022 (UTC)

Which images are permissible to be uploaded

Hey there,

I was considering uploading a few photos I took a wee bit back while out on a walk. This includes pictures of a harbour filled with boats, several signs, and a few pictures of an old building. I also took several of a few statues, but I now see that I'm not able to upload those. Regardless, I was wondering if the aforementioned pictures (boats, signs, and buildings), are allowed to be uploaded. A side note, the building I took pictures of already has an image of it on Commons, here - (https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/d/d6/DartmouthMA_Padanaram_SouthworthLibrary.jpg). Thanks, AdmiralAckbar1977 (talk) 01:11, 29 June 2022 (UTC)

@AdmiralAckbar1977: Given that this is U.S.:
  • Buildings of significance: absolutely, and unless the photo is effectively a duplicate, more images always welcome.
  • Harbor: sure
  • Signs: these are going to vary. If they are simple (no pictures, no lengthy texts) then they are probably fine. At some point signs hit a "threshold of originality" and become copyrightable in their own right.
  • Statues: depends on their date. For statues in the U.S. that are over a century old, you're pretty safe. Otherwise, you'd probably need to do some research to know copyright status, and I'd say in terms of doing your first uploads it's not worth your time.
Jmabel ! talk 02:27, 29 June 2022 (UTC)
This also depends very much on what jurisdictions are involved. I don't think there are any technical measures hindering you from uploading images of statues, but in many countries images of statues may not be published without permission from the sculptor as long as the statues themselves are under copyright, which means they need to be old (often 70–120 years, depending on circumstances). –LPfi (talk) 10:26, 29 June 2022 (UTC)
@AdmiralAckbar1977: In many countries, including the US 3D artistic works such as statues are copyright until 70 after the death of the creator, artist, designer, not just the age of the statue itself. Sometimes it is possible to get their permission, or that of their heirs, in addition to that of the photographer. Ww2censor (talk) 15:21, 29 June 2022 (UTC)
@LPfi: given that the OP indicated an image from Dartmouth, Massachusetts as being one of the buildings in question, I considered the jurisdiction clear. - Jmabel ! talk 15:50, 29 June 2022 (UTC)

Stone Coat of arms

Hello! Im confused on if I would put this under my own work or made by someone else. This item is a stone with a coat of arms engraved on it. It is located in the National Historical Museum in Tirana,Albania. It is the Skuraj Family coat of arms it looks like this - [7]. Am I allowed to use this or not? and If I am Would I put it under my Own work or Someone else and just list the Author as National Historical Museum in Tirana? Screenshot or cut photos from already uploaded magazines

There are some old magazines on Wiki Commons that have photos in them I want to use on a wikipedia page. Copyright is not an issue, I have checked and the magazines are in the public domain, no copyright. They were uploaded from Internet archive to Wikimedia Commons and are from the 1800s. I want to take some individual photos from the magazine and put them in a wikipedia article. How do I go about copying a photo from a magazine onto images in Commons so I can then upload just the image onto the page? I know how to load one image onto the page, I just don't now how cut the image from the magazine and put it into Commons. Do I use screenshot? LPascal (talk) 11:55, 29 June 2022 (UTC)

@LPascal: Hi, and welcome. The easiest method is specifying a display window for the file with a CSS image crop per en:H:PIC#Tips. Next easiest is uploading a crop using COM:CROPTOOL. Finally, screenshot as large as you can.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 12:12, 29 June 2022 (UTC)
The best way is to go to the Internet Archive and look at the original scans. Many of them were uploaded as individual image files, and a crop from there will be higher quality than from the PDF files.--Prosfilaes (talk) 13:27, 29 June 2022 (UTC)

I assume you speak of the image of a flag (used in 19th century). In this case the rules on national symbols of the state (or its successor) apply, not the fact, that an image of that flag can be seen on a random website. --C.Suthorn (talk) 07:58, 30 June 2022 (UTC)
See COM:AUSTRALIA. This file contains HTML or script code that may be erroneously interpreted by a web browser

Hello there! I'm trying to upload a simplified version of Nothing.svg, here's the SVG source of what I want to upload:

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8" standalone="yes"?>
<svg xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg">
    <defs><style type="text/css">@font-face {font-family: Ndot55; src: url(https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0584/0932/0622/t/5/assets/fonts-ndot55.otf);</style></defs>

    <text x="0" y="0" font-family="Ndot55" style="font-size: 80pt" dominant-baseline="text-before-edge" fill="#000">NOTHING</text>

    <script type="text/javascript">
        var svg = document.getElementsByTagName("svg")[0];
        var bbox = svg.getBBox();
        svg.setAttribute("width", bbox.width);
        svg.setAttribute("height", bbox.height);
        svg.setAttribute("viewBox", `${bbox.x} ${bbox.y} ${bbox.width} ${bbox.height}`);
   </script>
</svg>

When I try to upload it, it gives the error This file contains HTML or script code that may be erroneously interpreted by a web browser. Is there any way to fix this? Thanks, --QuickQuokka [talkcontribs] 13:34, 30 June 2022 (UTC)

Two ideas: Change the font to one of the webfonts that are supported by Wikimedia. Or convert the written text to xml graphics. AND: Replace the javascript by SVG (XML). --C.Suthorn (talk) 14:18, 30 June 2022 (UTC)

THe result of that changes will be identical to what is already online as File:Nothing.svg --C.Suthorn (talk) 14:22, 30 June 2022 (UTC)
@C.Suthorn: "Change the font to one of the webfonts that are supported by Wikimedia"  No can do, this is the logo of NOTHING; "Or convert the written text to xml graphics" That's what I did, I just want to optimize it now; QuickQuokka [talkcontribs] 14:53, 30 June 2022 (UTC)
No, you did not. You just did the opposite. Just look at the code you posted yourself. Instead of SVG/XML it is javascript and instead of graphics it is ASCII-text: "NOTHING" and an external webfont: fonts.ndot55.otf. But as I said, the result would be the file that is already online in Commons. --C.Suthorn (talk) 15:28, 30 June 2022 (UTC)

Yes, I told you so. But you could optimize that. Define a path for that circle and then call that circle repeatedly. only with SVG/XML not with javascript. C.Suthorn (talk) 16:14, 30 June 2022 (UTC)

Using a single page of a PDF for Wiki article thumbnail

Hello! I was looking at the page for Elements of Algebra and I saw it was lacking an image. I found this pdf which contains a really nice title page on page 7. I think using this page as a thumbnail for the article would be a really nice improvement but I'm not sure how to use it. If I try to insert the file on Wikipedia, it only uses the outside book cover which is not very useful. Is there a way that I can insert the seventh page? Moon motif (talk) 14:19, 30 June 2022 (UTC)

Twitter screen shot unknown origin

It came to my attention that there was a video of a bioterrorism incident on Twitter. There is a text label embedded in the video which I captured. We do not know the source of the video, and the person who posted is a pseudonym. How do I proceed with this image? Don't worry, every agency you know has been informed. Charles Juvon (talk) 21:42, 30 June 2022 (UTC)

  • @Charles Juvon: Doesn't sound like anything we can upload to Commons. Is there something else you have in mind? - Jmabel ! talk 21:52, 30 June 2022 (UTC)
  • Also, could you clarify what is going on with File:National Bio and Agro-Defense Facility.png, which you claim as your "own work" but where the description field links to a site that seems to contain a version of this image predating your upload to Commons and credited to someone else? - Jmabel ! talk 21:55, 30 June 2022 (UTC)
I'll be glad to go over that second issue after we finish with the first. I will of course accede to your greater experience. I was under there impression there is no enforceable copyright on a newsworthy event. FYI, the video just disappeared after I posted this question, but we have a copy. Charles Juvon (talk) 22:38, 30 June 2022 (UTC)
    • @Charles Juvon: The fact that something is newsworthy has no effect that I can think of on copyright as such. It can be relevant to fair use (a U.S. term, but there are analogous concepts in the legal systems of several other countries). Fair use has approximately no effect on Commons, given our mission to host content that can be freely reused, modified, etc. - Jmabel ! talk 23:07, 30 June 2022 (UTC)

Flag of Saudi Arabia

The user Aziz bm (talk · contribs) noticed that the calligraphy on the flag of Saudi Arabia did not match the official description of the flag. Several variants of the flag still use the incorrect calligraphy, such as File:Flag of Saudi Arabia (construction sheet).svg.

LaundryPizza03 (d) 14:11, 26 June 2022 (UTC)

The flags should probably be marked with Fact disputed and if in use, a mention on the talk pages of affected articles might be warranted. You could also notify the uploaders, at least if the flags are claimed to be own work. –LPfi (talk) 10:15, 29 June 2022 (UTC)

Flag of Saudi Arabia Problems

Hello Users,
I have been working on the Arabian and Islamic side of Wikipedia for a little over a year now, and I have noticed a few problems. I recently got into a confict with Aziz bm User talk:Aziz bm over his constant reverting of the File:Flag of Saudi Arabia.svg. Although his reverts are backed up with a governmental document, it is partially outdated. There are signs of age of that document, such as the design of the Coat of Arms for the Crown Prince (2nd flag on page 10), which does not even match what is use today. Additionally, the colors of the flag on that document have also changed (Page 10). There is definitely another document or royal decree that released for the updating of this flag. Additionally, on Page 12, it shows the calligraphic difference, proving part of my point!!!
To make it clear, the current version of the Saudi Arabian flag on File:Flag of Saudi Arabia.svg is used by civilians mainly, but not used in the governmental settings. The current version of the File:Flag of Saudi Arabia (type 2).svg is used in governmental settings, as evidenced by this:
Aziz bm User talk:Aziz bm showed me instances of File:Flag of Saudi Arabia (type 2).svg on User talk:Xpërt3 and then starts to threaten me about how my edits will "cost me suspension", etc. He is still reverting other files such as Royal Standard of Saudi Arabia.svg, which is not even backed by his evidence. Here is an example of that file in use with the flag version I have been reverting back to:

1-[8] 2-[9]

On Admins Noticeboard page, I referenced another users response from around a year ago about the same issue, and here is what the user said:
Zyido states, "I've tried to gather examples of the flag in official use: Example 1, Example 2, Example 3, Example 4, Example 5, Example 6, Example 7, Example 8, Example 9, Example 10. As you can see, the VM version appears inside the royal court, when receiving dignitaries, and on flagpoles in the country. In addition, here, you can see a video shot inside the Saudi Arabian Standards Organization (SASO), the body responsible for maintaining the flag specifications, with the VM version flag in the office. On the other hand, there are, at least, some examples of the FOTW version being used in an official capacity, but they are fewer in comparison: Example A, Example B. In both instances I could find, the flags have been hoisted on the wrong side, indicating they've been set up by the non-Saudi counterpart. Given all this evidence, I am led to believe that the VM version is at least an official, if not the official, current version of the flag. The FOTW version does have an official origin though: It appears to be based on one of several diagrams in the appendix of the 1973 decree (Page 10, Page 11, Page 12) which established the basis of the current flag law. I've been looking through documents all day trying to find a definitive answer on where the VM version came from. It is my understanding that an official flag construction sheet was created in 1984 and attached to a SASO document numbered م ق س 403-1984. I'm still trying to hunt down this document. I am curious to know everyone's thoughts and how we can proceed with this information, and what the relevant Commons/Wikipedia rules are. My proposal is for both flags to appear on the Wikipedia page as alternatives/variants in some way once we decide which one is the "main" one."
This is not incorrect calligraphy, as proven by the sources I have provided above. The admin, User:LaundryPizza03 was convinced by Aziz bm's reverts but in my view he didn't look far enough and made a poor decision. I tried contacting the admin to look at the noticeboard and the information I put there but he didn't respond, hence I came here to express my view of the issue. Both flags are correct, but the flag I'm arguing for is used in governmental settings. If one flag had to be used on the Wikipedia page, it should be File:Flag of Saudi Arabia (type 2).svg as the government uses this flag. Xpërt3 (talk) 17:39, 30 June 2022 (UTC)
It seems both files depict flags that de facto are in use, and thus both are in scope for Wikimedia Commons. What flag to use in Wikipedia articles is up to Wikipedia editors and not to us.
There is a practice to reserve certain filenames for the current official version of the flag, but that practice has no support in policy. Both are available (a deletion request was declined) and I assume both flags are among those listed as other versions. Now somebody should summarise the discussion on what contexts the flags are used in (popular and governmental use?) and to what degree they are official (current and former?). Make sure that uncertain or contested statements aren't worded as definitive facts. Then we have done our part and the rest is up to reusers, including Wikipedia.
LPfi (talk) 13:29, 1 July 2022 (UTC)
To quickly summarize User:LPfi, I would like to state that:
  • File:Flag of Saudi Arabia.svg is used in most civilian settings and therefore is not an illegitimate flag. However this flag is not seen in Saudi government offices, only rarely ever seen in official meetings with other country officials in different countries (eg. , taken in Washington during a meeting).
  • Just to clarify, I believe both flag versions with the different calligraphy's are both legitimate flags that should be put on the Saudi Arabia country page, but that is not what Aziz Bm thinks.
  • The royal decree he is using as "proof" is simply outdated, evidenced by the contents of the file (eg. colors of flag not matching the flags from today, coat of arms design not matching the flags from today, etc.) I would think that another royal decree would have been released at a later date, but that royal decree has not been found yet. Regardless, using a 1973 decree does not state anything about the new flags with different colors and designs being used today, which is why I do not believe it is to-date.

Giovanni da Tufara

Hello, I was hoping somebody would be able to check a recent upload I made: File:Giovanni da Tufara.jpg. It is my first upload which is not of my own work, and I would like to make sure that my copyright tags are all correct and there are no other issues. Thank you! Vesuvio14 (talk) 16:55, 30 June 2022 (UTC)

@Jmabel: Thank you for letting me know. I will change the author now- I put that template in the wrong place! In terms of the date, I don’t know exactly when the statue would have been from, but I think it would have been either 1950 or 51. What would you recommend I put as the date in that case? Vesuvio14 (talk) 21:32, 30 June 2022 (UTC)
@Vesuvio14: "I think" is a little weak as the basis for a copyright claim; someone may nominate this for deletion and say it will be a couple of years till we can host it (after which it would be restored). You would put between between (corrected because I'd mistyped - Jmabel ! talk 23:09, 30 June 2022 (UTC)). -- Jmabel ! talk 21:50, 30 June 2022 (UTC)
Sorry, I meant to say that it would have been either 50 or 51, but that I don’t know which. Vesuvio14 (talk) 21:54, 30 June 2022 (UTC)

I’ve just found a small inscription on the statue’s bottom which would suggest it would be from a later date, so would not qualify for this. Is there any way that I could find out the kind of licence it was released under, or would it be best to just delete? Vesuvio14 (talk) 07:33, 2 July 2022 (UTC)

@Vesuvio14: What does the inscription say? See also COM:ITALY.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 10:55, 2 July 2022 (UTC)
@Jeff G.: The inscription says 1975, so a good 25 years later than I thought. I’ve had a look at COM:ITALY, but am struggling to understand what this qualifies as as I don’t know very much about copyrighting. The creator is unknown as the site was purchased by my grandmother so long ago, so I do. It know when the artist’s death would have been. I doubt it would have been registered under any official licence, but obviously do not know. Does that help? Vesuvio14 (talk) 11:29, 2 July 2022 (UTC)
@Vesuvio14: sculptures in Italy are copyrighted by default. We have no reason to believe any license was ever issued for the copyright on that sculpture. So unless something is going on here that I don't see, that file should be deleted. - Jmabel ! talk 16:14, 2 July 2022 (UTC)
Brilliant, thanks for helping. I have tagged for speedy deletion. Vesuvio14 (talk) 17:43, 2 July 2022 (UTC)
