Institutional consent for uploads?

Greetings, WC help desk! As part of Wikipedia Summer of Monuments I'm going to be soliciting photo contributions from various different institutions. I *anticipate* that sometimes, when an institution has digital materials already online, it might be easier to upload material myself, with the institution's consent, rather than direct a staffer through the process. In my opinion, and perhaps also yours, it is preferable if someone at the institution makes an upload themselves. But I would like to know if there's a process for registering official consent (to the proper license etc.) before doing an upload. Thanks, Monumenteer2014 (talk) 20:48, 30 June 2014 (UTC)

Hello, For institutional material and/or material already online, to be uploaded to Commons either by someone from the institution or by you, a validation from the authorities of the institution will normally be required. Please see Commons:OTRS for all the details. Who the institution chooses to authorize and under what terms is more of a practical matter. They may choose to give one of their own trusted employees a general authorization (something along the lines of "Everything uploaded through the Commons account of Ms. Jane Doe is offered by us under the license [name of license]"). They may choose to give an authorization to you, but they would, or should, certainly be more reluctant to give a general authorization to someone they don't know. If they do, they would more likely authorize you to upload only specific files on a closed list. -- Asclepias (talk) 21:12, 30 June 2014 (UTC)
Thank you! Monumenteer2014 (talk) 05:28, 1 July 2014 (UTC)
Note that the above answer started from the premise that you planned to request consent from the institutions because they own the copyrights. It applies only when the institution itself owns the copyright to the photographs. When the institution does not own the copyright, it would be useless to ask them to send something through OTRS. For photos whose copyrights are owned by the photographers, you must obtain the consent of each photographer through OTRS. And for photos is in the public domain, you don't need an authorization. If for some reason you wish to request some sort of consent for reproducing public domain material from the institution's website, it will be informal between you and them, no need for formalities or OTRS. -- Asclepias (talk) 06:54, 1 July 2014 (UTC)

Copyright help regarding File:Nelson Teran.jpg

This picture was taken at a concert and given to me and also to the artist (Nelson Teran) for free use by his author David Chacon. It is also published on the internet in several pages related to the artist. The author is David Chacon. --Xinia Estrada (talk) 20:57, 30 June 2014 (UTC)

  1. Generic "permission" is not enough, we need a specific license.
  2. Please see COM:OTRS or COM:OTRS/es for how a third party can indicate permission. - Jmabel ! talk 22:01, 30 June 2014 (UTC)

Copyright help regarding Matakis.jpg

Hello.

I want to upload a photo of my grandfather, who used to be a football player. I have a photo of him, 55 years ago which I found in an old album. My grandfather died in 1999. I don't know who was the photographer, i do not own the photo. It is possible to upload this or not? And if yes which copyright i should use?

Thank you! --Giotagts (talk) 20:14, 1 July 2014 (UTC)

  • If you don't know who took the photo, you are probably out of luck (in terms of Commons). The photographer owns the copyright, and I can't think of any country in which these would be in the public domain this quickly without knowing who that was. But you might try at Commons:Village pump/Copyright to see if someone has some suggestion for a direction I might not be thinking about. - Jmabel ! talk 04:13, 2 July 2014 (UTC)

Email

If someone emails me will my email be visible? StudiesWorld (talk) 15:34, 5 July 2014 (UTC)

  • May I assume this means "If someone emails me through the 'email this user' link on Commons, will my email address be visible to them?" If it meant something else, please clarify. Unless I am very much mistaken (or there is some loophole I'm unaware of after a decade on WMF projects), the answer to that question is "No. Their email address will be visible to you, and of course if you reply your address will be visible to them in the email you send."- Jmabel ! talk 15:42, 5 July 2014 (UTC)

Statistics regarding wikiwide usage of files

Hi,

There used to be a tool that allowed me to access detailed information on which pictures of a certain category (or alternatively pictures that where uploaded by a certain user) are currently being used in any wiki project. For example: As part of a GLAM cooperation project the archives I represent uploaded about 8000 pictures so far. Occasionally we checked which of our uploads were used within the wikiworld - how often and where exactly. Just out of curiosity. There was a tool (that is either gone or I can't find it anymore) that allowed queries based on categories, e.g. our own. Detailed results provided non only statistics ("3% of files are used") but also links to the respective pages. Does this tool still exist?

Thanks and kind regards, --KAS-ACDP (talk) 05:49, 7 July 2014 (UTC)

You may be thinking of Glamorous or one of the others at glamtools. (They seem unresponsive at the moment, but those links have worked for me previously.)—Odysseus1479 (talk) 06:02, 7 July 2014 (UTC)
Thank you! The tool I have in mind wasn't among the glamtools, but I'll give it a shot there as soon as they start working again. --KAS-ACDP (talk) 09:50, 7 July 2014 (UTC)
P.S.: Actually I was looking for Glamorous as it turned out... thanks again! --KAS-ACDP (talk) 06:45, 8 July 2014 (UTC)

Flickr direct upload tool

Is there a Flickr direct upload tool that will upload automatically from Flickr if the license is correct? I would like to upload several Flickr pictures to use in various articles. All the Flickr pictures have the Creative Commons Attribution 2.0 Generic license.--Doug Coldwell (talk) 12:55, 2 July 2014 (UTC)

The pages Commons:Upload tools#Uploading from Flickr and Commons:Flickr files#Uploading images have some information. But the tool that seemed the most used, Flickr upload bot, stopped working last week. Maybe you can see if you can do something with the tool Flickr2Commons. -- Asclepias (talk) 15:23, 2 July 2014 (UTC)

I received permission on all the photos I posted per the note below - is there any other information you need?

Thank You

  • Hurley died in 1962; assuming Australian copyright is the relevant one, this would still be copyrighted, because it was still copyrighted in 2004 when Australia extended the copyright term from 50 years to 70 years. Unless I'm missing something, it won't enter the public domain until 2032. Is there something else you think applies? - Jmabel ! talk 17:04, 9 July 2014 (UTC)
Australian Copyright Council, Information sheet G023, Duration of copyright. 1931+50=1981<1996. -- Asclepias (talk) 21:02, 9 July 2014 (UTC)
I agree with this analysis regarding the US-law PD conditions—and since of course 1981 < 2005 as well, the photos should also remain PD in Australia. @Jmabel: from the document linked above, “If copyright expired before 1 January 2005, it was not revived, even if it was less than 70 years since the end of the year in which the creator died …” (p.2) So given an appropriate licence template this photo, like the one below, should be fine. (The PD-Australia tag doesn’t mention the non-revival of pre-2005 copyrights: perhaps it should.)—Odysseus1479 (talk) 00:47, 10 July 2014 (UTC)
Why are you counting from the publication date? I believe the relevant date is Hurley's death. 1962+50 = 2012. 2012 > 2005. From the document you cite: "For example, the Australian author Miles Franklin died in 1954. Under the pre-AUSFTA rules, copyright in those of her works which were published during her lifetime expired 50 years from the end of the year in which she died – that is, at midnight on 31 December 2004." No mention of publication date; strong implication that death date is relevant for all works. - Jmabel ! talk 02:34, 10 July 2014 (UTC)

Finding, downloading and using files

I started out on Wikipedia Commons by click on a High Res image link on the left toolbar. I was taken too some images, created a slideshow, but once I got out of the slideshow I lost the page.

I do not want to upload images to the site, but rather, I would like to download images to my computer to use on a website. So, I have the following questions: 1. How do I find image categories? 2. How do I download an image?

I assume that the images are free to use. If not, do I need permission, and how do I get it?

Thanks — Preceding unsigned comment added by BeverlyZ (talk • contribs) 17:32, 3 July 2014‎ (UTC)

1. Several ways. Starting at an image description page, you will see its categories in small print at the bottom. (With any luck you will, anyway … we do have a lot of uncategorized files.) Click any one, and you will go to the corresponding Category page. Its sub-categories, if any, will be listed near the top and its parent categories will be shown at the bottom. In between there may be a gallery of file thumbnails, depending on the nature of the category (and how much curatorial attention it receives). Another way to find things is with the Search field; if you guess the name of a category or gallery, you’ll be taken straight there; otherwise, you‘re likely to see quite a few files or similar categories that can serve as a starting point to navigate the category tree.
2. Two main ways. From a description page, right-click the file-name or “Original image” link a couple of lines below the large preview, which should give you a “Save linked file as …” option or similar. From the Media Viewer, click the small square-and-arrow icon immediately under the image near the right-hand side; you should get a popup with a green Download button. From a gallery or category page, clicking a file-name caption takes you to the description page; OTOH clicking a thumbnail opens the Media Viewer (in which the “More details” link beside the Commons icon gets you to the description page).
3. Everything hosted here is free to use, but some images are subject to the conditions of Creative Commons or similar licences, e.g. that the author be credited (BY) or that no further restrictions be placed on re-users (SA). The description page will show whether an image is public-domain or requires attribution. Please see COM:REUSE for details.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 04:13, 4 July 2014 (UTC)

Updating the Assyrian Flag

Hello I'm not to clear how all of this site works, but I want to update the Assyrian flag. I lack permissions in doing so and in my case I'd like to contact someone who could do it for me. If possible I have an online credible source for the image update. It is located in this link.

http://www.atour.com/education/20000602b.html

This is the wikipedia page for the flag that needs changing.. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Assyrian_flag

I also uploaded the image to my profile in case that is needed somehow. Thank you.

  • This is presumably a disagreement about the correct flag rather than an update to an established flag. Assuming there are no copyright issues, Commons should have both versions, with appropriate sourcing and description. Which one a particular Wikipedia article chooses to feature is not Commons' affair. - Jmabel ! talk 17:09, 4 July 2014 (UTC)

@Jmabel Thank you for the feedback.. This is exactly my question, I know the flag the Wikipedia page chose is the wrong flag. Therefore I'm looking for guidance on what I need to do or whom I should speak to in regards to correcting the flag. I am not authorized to make any overrides to the current flag image chosen, but I do have credible sources on the accurate flag. If this is not commons affair than whose would it be?

  • On Commons, upload your version of the flag here under a different file name.
  • Then go to the talk page of the article on the relevant Wikipedia (I'm guessing the English-language one by the language of your posting) and make your case for the change, give it a couple of days, and then unless there is consensus against you, you can make edit the article (substituting one image for the other). Or you could be bold and edit the article without first going to the talk page, but if you do that on something like this -- changing a flag is pretty much always controversial -- I would definitely include a citation in your edit. - Jmabel ! talk 15:37, 5 July 2014 (UTC)

Licenses

Hi,

I'd would like to know if it's possible to upload an image in Commons for using in Wikipedia, under the following license from Creative Commons: Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivatives 4.0 International (CC BY-NC-ND 4.0)

I look forward to hearing from you,

Thanks a lot! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Sonia several (talk • contribs)

No. Only CC-BY and CC-BY-SA are accepted here. Regards, Yann (talk) 17:50, 5 July 2014 (UTC)
To clarify: other licenses are allowed (like CC-0, for instance), but in your specific case, the NC and ND clauses both disallow its use here. Chris857 (talk) 23:09, 5 July 2014 (UTC)

File:C. H. Best and F. G. Banting ca. 1924.png is PNG and labeled PD and File:Photograph of C.H. Best and F.G. Banting ca. 1924 (12309018974).jpg is JPG and labeled CC. The photograph was taken 1924 but it's not clear if it was also published then so I'm not sure which license would be correct.--Brainy J (talk) 19:38, 5 July 2014 (UTC)

— Preceding unsigned comment added by Tvorya (talk • contribs)

  • You don't say which particular pictures; you mention only "WikiEarth". I assume from the fact that you are asking here that these images were uploaded to Commons for WikiEarth, not directly to WikiEarth. I also assume that these are photos you yourself took. The answer that follows is based on those assumptions.
  • In general, if you uploaded an image the way you intended it and someone else prefers a different version but you prefer your own version, then you car revert to the original image and let them know that if they want to upload their variant, they should do so under a different filename. The two versions should then be linked by {{Derivative works}} and {{Derived from}}.

Image notes getting messed up

I had a problem trying to add image notes to File:Aerial of south downtown Seattle, 1963.jpg. Height ('h' in the template) keeps getting set to "undefined". Stranger yet, it seemed to accept a few just fine, look just fine; then when I added more, not only did these collapse to h=undefined in the latest version, but they seemed to be messed up in the history, too, even though I had seen several rectangles at a time looking fine earlier. Anyone know what could be going on here? - Jmabel ! talk 07:11, 12 July 2014 (UTC)

Seems like I've had the same problem with File:Siegesturm Panorama May 2014.jpg. Everything looked fine while I was adding the notes, I didn't notice anything wrong until now. --El Grafo (talk) 07:19, 12 July 2014 (UTC)
What you see right after you save the note is apparently still something like a temporary preview image that was generated before the save. But the edit actually saved has the value undefined and if you look at the page after that, you see the broken view. -- Asclepias (talk) 17:10, 12 July 2014 (UTC)

See MediaWiki talk:Gadget-ImageAnnotator-v3.js. The problem was created 11 days ago [1]. The admin who broke the tool walked away without fixing it. A user reported the problem on the talk page. Another admin noted the problem but didn't have time to fix it and sort of asked the first admin to clean his own mess (I can understand that). A few days later, more users complained. A third admin pointed them to the MediaWiki pages. A week after the problem was created, a fourth admin complained when he saw that his own annotations didn't work, so I was hoping he would do something about it and I suggested how he could try and fix it, but he also just walked away. Pages in the MediaWiki namespace can be modified by amins only, so non-admin users cannot fix it. What users can do is edit a second time each description page where they add an annotation and insert manually a value to the height. Other than that, users are stuck with a broken tool until an admin decides to do something. It's not a major problem, as this tool is not enormously used. Yet, each new annotation that is not re-edited by a user adds to the backlog of images with broken annotations. I see that you are an admin. Can we hope that you will do something? -- Asclepias (talk) 16:57, 12 July 2014 (UTC)

I presume that in between the two he tested and discovered this did not fix the problem.

@Jmabel: , I think this is a case of someone who has not yet unified their Wikimedia accounts, with separate Commons and Wikipedia accounts but the same username. The Hungarian Wikipedia user with this username made an edit at hu-wiki a short while ago, referring to this thread, although it isn't clear whether they are the same person as the IP. Could there be a possible solution whereby the hu-wiki user could add a note to their hu-wiki talkpage with a direct link to this thread, to confirm that they are indeed the IP who made this request. Having searched for this issue I might be wrong but I'm no longer sure admins can help with changing password. The nearest solution I can find is at Meta, where they suggested that developers can help but usually need prompting. I would suggest posting a message at m:Wikimedia Forum and see what they say. The unified account request board might be another source of help, as I believe the stewards have tools, for modifying & synchronizing global accounts, that are not available to project sysops. Whether they have the needed ones or not I don’t know, but it may be possible for the Hungarian Wikipedia account to “usurp“ the Commons account, making the old access info here irrelevant.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 03:32, 4 July 2014 (UTC)

Upload an image from Flickr with CC License

This image I uploaded recently got deleted right away - although it meets the CC criteria. https://www.flickr.com/photos/apassionata/14417108718/

What's wrong about it? can anyone help me? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Effkan (talk • contribs) 09:05, 10 July 2014‎ (UTC)

Mmmmh, it's plainly licensed CC and it seems to be Apassionata's official Flickr account → looks fine to me. Did you attribute it correctly (giving the flickr page as a source and putting Apassionata in the author= field)? Pinging Steinsplitter (deleting admin) for further input … --El Grafo (talk) 11:31, 10 July 2014 (UTC)
Hi Effkan, you did not give the URLs to the individual images when uploading them. This prompted the automatic Flickr review to fail. The images were then reviewed manually and found to be under an NC license by User:XenonX3 so it seems that the license has been changed in the meantime. I have restored the images and reset the Flickr review. A bot should now be able to review them correctly. Sorry for the inconvenience. Regards, -- ChrisiPK (Talk|Contribs) 11:37, 10 July 2014 (UTC)

Is there a way to automatically categorize my Quality/Valued Images?

I have a few Quality Images and some Valued Images and probably some more coming. Is there a way to have my QI/VI automatically added to user categories like the ones I can find here: Category:Quality images by user? A bot or something? Or maybe I make some mistake in my description/license template? Or maybe the only way is to create such categories manually and keep track of all my QI/VI? Thank you in advance for clarifying this matter. --Tupungato (talk) 22:42, 10 July 2014 (UTC)

May I use this photo?

Hi, I'm writing on the article Cantata++ at this moment. I wanted to add a photo to explain and illustrate the main idea. Therefore I would like to know whether I may use a photo of an official document which you can find online on the companies website. It is this one: http://www.qa-systems.com/fileadmin/data/Product-Feature-Briefs/Cantata_FeatureBrief-Baseline_Testing.pdf (Cantata Baseline Testing Cantata Baseline Testing Feature) Website of QA-Systems, called 7-11-14. The photo at the bottom on page 4. I made a screenshot of it and now want to use it in my article. Would that meet the guidances ? Thank you for your help! QARon (talk) 10:23, 11 July 2014 (UTC)

  • To put it on Commons, you would need a free license, since it is copyrighted. IPL is presumably the copyright holder. They might be willing to give that permission; if they are, see COM:OTRS for how they can pass along that permission. Remember to choose a specific license.
  • You don't say where your article may be, but if it is in the English-language Wikipedia, they make limited allowance for non-free use of images (which must be uploaded directly to the English-language Wikipedia, not to Commons). See en:Wikipedia:Non-free use rationale guideline for details. - Jmabel ! talk 01:39, 12 July 2014 (UTC)

What to do?

I have no idea what might be able to be done about this, besides spending an extraordinary amount of time, image by image. --SergeWoodzing (talk) 16:03, 11 July 2014 (UTC)

  • Of course it has to be "image by image" in the sense that you have to decide for each image whether it needs to be recategorized, but with either Cat-a-lot or Visual File Change it should be pretty quick. - Jmabel ! talk 01:44, 12 July 2014 (UTC)

Show links to audio files (on an elegant way)

Since some recent changes to the user interface audio files (*.ogg) are no longer shown as links to the file page but as obscured player item with not even a path shown (e.g. on right click). Of course, one can reproduce the path by clicking on "edit" or enable right click by disabling JavaScript (then an option "Copy Audio Link" appears), but those are "dirty hacks" and far from being elegant. Is there any hidden option to either show a clickable link to the file or switching to a plain interface as it has been some month/years ago? File:OtonabeeSerpentMoundCanada.png

Would someone have a moment to look at File:OtonabeeSerpentMoundCanada.png. The photo is supposed to be of a serpent mound, but it looks like some weird drawing. The link to the page the picture is supposed to have come from doesn't show this picture there. Also, the linked source is to a Canadian website, but the copyright listed is for the United States. Thanks! Magnolia677 (talk) 23:15, 13 July 2014 (UTC)

The “photo” wording is part of the CRHP template, which doesn’t have variants for drawings &c., as is the link to the Historic Places page. From a quick Web search the source given appears to be an American book published in 1905, which presumably included the drawing of the Canadian mound for comparison with its subject in Ohio. So I don’t see any problem, except for the lamentable circumstance that we don”t seem to have any photos of the site.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 03:20, 14 July 2014 (UTC)

Creating cat page, "interwiki link to English language Wikipedia" link doesn't work

  • Category:New Zealand general election, 2014 doesn't exist (in the sense that there is no such category page), although there is one picture categorized in it. I've never before clicked on "interwiki link to English language Wikipedia", so I have no idea what it would normally do, but you can accomplish the interwiki link by putting [[:en:New Zealand general election, 2014]] at the bottom of the category page when you create it. - Jmabel ! talk 01:52, 12 July 2014 (UTC)
    • Looks like you got this mostly right; I did the last of it. You might want to look at what I did differently that makes the link appear in the navigation as an interlanguage link, rather than just being part of the text of the page. - Jmabel ! talk 23:58, 14 July 2014 (UTC)

Madison Rising images keep getting deleted.

Hi,

I'm not sure why you guys keep flagging my images for deletion. I have been given SOLE AUTHORITY from Purple Eagle Entertainment to use ANY AND ALL BAND IMAGES AS I SEE FIT, and have already forwarded documentation to en-permissions@wikipedia.org verifying the same.

Please advise. — Preceding unsigned comment added by TheGr8Gonzo (talk • contribs)

  • Have you received an OTRS ticket number yet? If not, were the images marked with {{OTRS pending}}? Also, they can presumably only license images that the band actually owns: typically, a photographer/artist would own copyright unless the photo/art was work for hire under a contract that explicitly signs over copyrights. - Jmabel ! talk 19:12, 15 July 2014 (UTC)

Portrait already published

The photographer who made the image of Zeb Soanes used here has emailed me, with the full agreement of Mr Soanes himself, to allow it to be used at the Wikipedia article about him. What is the easiest way of doing this? Thanks. Martinevans123 (talk) 20:55, 11 July 2014 (UTC)

  • Sadly in this case, permission specific to a Wikipedia article is not relevant for Commons. We'd require a free license; see COM:OTRS for details.
  • You don't say which language Wikipedia you are working in. Some of them allow non-free use on a limited basis; some do not. If you are working in the English-language Wikipedia, see en:Wikipedia:Non-free use rationale guideline for details of what you can do there. - Jmabel ! talk 01:47, 12 July 2014 (UTC)
I work in the English-language Wikipedia. The image is for the https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zeb_Soanes article. So I could just upload a copy, for fair use in that article, by using the fair use template? Martinevans123 (talk) 08:23, 12 July 2014 (UTC)
No. From en:Wikipedia:Non-free content: "Non-free content should not be used when a freely licensed file that serves the same purpose can reasonably be expected to be uploaded, as is the case for almost all portraits of living people." (In fact, no Wikimedia project may allow fair use for such images according to foundation:Resolution:Licensing policy, so I'm not sure why one would bring up fair use when it obviously cannot be used.) LX (talk, contribs) 09:50, 12 July 2014 (UTC)

Or could I just use this: [2]? Thanks. Martinevans123 (talk) 10:09, 12 July 2014 (UTC)
That seems to be the subject's Flickr account, not the photographer's. Since the photographer is the author and copyright holder, they are the only one who can legitimately publish the photo under a valid free license, so we'd still need confirmation of their approval via OTRS. LX (talk, contribs) 10:16, 12 July 2014 (UTC)
Nice distinction. But surely the flickr account holder could just change the copyright to "no restrictions"? Martinevans123 (talk) 10:54, 12 July 2014 (UTC)
Have now sent an email request to the photographer. Martinevans123 (talk) 14:20, 12 July 2014 (UTC)
It seems I did not need to do this at all and it was a complete waste of time. Martinevans123 (talk) 06:53, 16 July 2014 (UTC)
What makes you say that? (As for the "no known copyright restrictions" option, that can only be set by institutions participating in Flickr The Commons. Regular Flickr users can only select "All Rights Reserved" or Creative Commons licenses. But again, it does not matter what license a Flickr user specifies unless they are the copyright holder or the copyright holder approved publication under that license, and in the latter case, we need confirmation of that.) LX (talk, contribs) 11:51, 16 July 2014 (UTC)
I was instructed to obtain the photographer's explicit written permission via OTRS? I don't mind wasting my own time, but it now seems I was wasting his too. The image is now uploaded and used where it was needed. But I didn't actually need to contact either photographer or subject? Martinevans123 (talk) 15:54, 16 July 2014 (UTC)
Oh, now I see what you mean. Sven Manguard uploaded File:Zeb Soanes.jpg. But the fact that it's technically possible to upload the file without any automatic red flags being raised doesn't mean that going through the OTRS procedure is a waste of time. Without confirmation of the author's approval of the licensing selected by the subject/Flickr user, such a photo would be liable to be tagged as missing evidence of permission at any time and deleted. I've tagged the file with a notice indicating that OTRS permission is hopefully on its way. Thanks for your work. LX (talk, contribs) 18:10, 16 July 2014 (UTC)

It looked to me like everything was set. Sven Manguard Wha? 19:32, 16 July 2014 (UTC)
Oh right, so now I've emailed the photographer to say his permission isn't needed and to apologise for wasting his time, I've got to go back to him and say "no, sorry that request is in fact needed after all"? wow. Martinevans123 (talk) 20:43, 16 July 2014 (UTC)
Martinevans123: If the photographer and the subject - the two people that could reasonabally hold the copyright - have both okayed it, then it is almost certainly fine. Why don't you send the whole conversation to permissions-commons@wikimedia.org though (include "Attn: Sven" in the subject), and I will look at it and give you a better answer. Martinevans123: Thanks. I sent a message to you, the photographer, and the subject of the portrait, making sure that they knew the details of the CC-BY-2.0 license. Assuming that they don't get back within a few days saying "oh, no, that's not what we meant to do at all [when we selected that license on Flickr]", there's no cause for concern. Since last time, the photo is apparently still unused, and the communication skills of the IP have apparently not improved. Some effort was made by Commons users to change the filename and remove the geolocation, although those measures are rather inefficient, as the old filename is still visible as a redirection at the bottom of the page and in the upload comment, and not much can be done to prevent the reinsertion of the geolocation as a user did. People may be inclined to keep the photo because they are upset by the agressive tone of the IP, but we could also just ignore the tone and delete that small unused file if it can help the IP escape a permanent state of stress. -- Asclepias (talk) 00:09, 17 July 2014 (UTC)

Copyright help regarding File:Illusion 5 edited.jpg

I have been warned that two of the images I uploaded do not have the correct licensing to be kept. The images are on an academic website http://persci.mit.edu/gallery/checkershadow/download with the rubric: "© 1995, Edward H. Adelson. It seems to me that this offers sufficient evidence for their use in WP. However, I can't find a way of expressing this in your licensing terms. Please help.

Piet Mondrian d. Feb. 1, 1944 - public domain?

Mondrian died 70 years and a few months ago. Is it time to replace the scary non-public domain language with the "may not be in public domain everywhere" language and start adding lots of scans of beautiful paintings, or is there some other reason to wait that I don't know about? I'm not an experienced enough Wikipedian to start the project but I'd be happy to contribute once someone gets it up & running. Albiart (talk) 23:40, 19 July 2014 (UTC)

I’m not sure, but ISTM the wording of death-of-creator copyright dating usually goes by the calendar year—meaning in this case that Mondrian’s rights may not expire until December 31 of this year.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 23:42, 19 July 2014 (UTC)

Good point; the post-1922 works will not begin to lose their US copyright status for a few years yet. AIUI the URAA policy is against uploading such files. Elvis impersonator

I have some photos of an Elvis impersonator who was performing at a shopping center some time back. Before (or if) I go uploading, are there any possible issues I should be concerned about? Thank you. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots21:11, 26 July 2014 (UTC)

There is always a whole host of issues to consider but probablythe most important issue is copyright and licensing, which involves several questions. Who took the photos i.e. was it you or somebody else? If somebody else toom them, have you obtained explicit permission to upload the photos i.e. a Commons-compatible license? Where were the photos taken i.e. which country (so you can work out copyright rules)? Have the photos been published previously, even if it was a miserly blog entry in "The Bermuda Triangle Times"? Were the photos taken inside or outside the shopping centre i.e. was it a public performance or something happening in a private area? Another issue to consider is whether there might be personality rights involved in the photos, meaning the personality rights of the impersonator? Yet another issue might be de minimis definitions for copyright works that might appear in the photos. There are probably other issues but those are some of the ones I would consider before uploading anything. Green Giant (talk) 21:52, 26 July 2014 (UTC)
I took the picture, and have never published it. Inside the shopping center, in a public area. The Elvis guy was part of a benefit for an organization called "Walk and Roll", a non-profit which supports those with spinal cord injuries, a number of whom were in the audience. It was totally open and free, lots of folks taking pictures, money coming from donations and souvenir purchases (I contributed some cash myself). Their sign is on the wall behind the guy. His name is Tony Redmond, and I think he does this strictly as a hobby, but I'm not certain of that. So the right to use his image and/or the right to display the "Walk and Roll" sign sounds like the issues of most concern. I suspect neither one would mind the free publicity, but that's not a foolproof assumption. Thanks for you help. I'll look into those questions. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots01:09, 27 July 2014 (UTC)
Well there are personality rights and technically they could object but if you are performing in a public area there is a reasonable expectation that photos might be taken. However the images belong to you as the photographer so it is up to you to license them but you should use the {{Personality}} template just to ensure that you are aware of the issue. As for the sign, it is a question of how much creativity has gone into it. If it is just text, then that is not really copyrightable but if there are other elements it really boils down to how much of the sign is visible in your photos and whether it is de minimis. Green Giant (talk) 03:11, 27 July 2014 (UTC)
I can't find a personal website for the Elvis Impersonator nor one specifically for the Walk and Roll cause. The actual organization is Midwest Special Services, Inc., and the sign consists of those names surrounded by a circle with various "handicapped" symbols. This picture,[3] from a facebook page for MSS, is kind of similar to the one I took. What do you think? ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots04:19, 27 July 2014 (UTC)
The sort of image you linked to would be fine because your focus is the impersonator and not the sign, which takes up a reasonably small portion of the photo. I would suggest uploading the image for further scrutiny but based on what you've said so far I can't see any major problems. I might be wrong so don't hold me to it :) . Green Giant (talk) 04:36, 27 July 2014 (UTC)
I cropped mine to make "Elvis" the main subject, which of course also makes the sign larger. I'll upload it and let you know. If it's not acceptable, zap it. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots13:41, 27 July 2014 (UTC)
Done. File:Elvis impersonator at MOA.jpgBaseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots13:48, 27 July 2014 (UTC)

That looks fine. The sign is unavoidable because it is part of his performance area. The only thing that needs fixing is the date, which should be the date the photo was taken and not the date of uploading, since that is automatically recorded in the file history. Green Giant (talk) 14:08, 27 July 2014 (UTC)

Public domain template for State Library of North Carolina

Hello all and happy belated Bastille Day.

I am working at the behest of the State Library of North Carolina on a template that will acknowledge that their contributions are in the public domain. Representatives of the library have made quite clear that they want to release their files into the public domain.

Indeed North Carolina law arguably suggests that all state files belong in the public domain, and that premise is the basis for this template: {{PD-NCGov}}

The latter template is currently under discussion by some who feel the public domain law isn't strong enough. But since the State Library is quite clear on releasing their files (and makes explicit statements to this effect on their site) I think we can go ahead with a template for them to use.

Thus: {{PD-SLNC}}

When I test upload using this template, Upload Wizard doesn't accept it as a permission. Can anyone help me to understand what needs to be done so the S.L. of N.C. can use this template for the images they wish to contribute!

Thanks & Peace & Blessings, Monumenteer2014 (talk) 03:58, 15 July 2014 (UTC)

Thanks to Bawolff and Odder, the licence options are (at present) hardcoded and a bug request is needed to ask the developers to add a new licence. Nick (talk) 21:21, 21 July 2014 (UTC)

Train wreck in Sweden in 1918

Sirs, There is a photo of a train wreck that happened in Sweden in 1918 but the writing says its now able to be used in the public domain and that the license has expired. What I'd like to know is does this mean that I can now use this photo in a manuscript I am working on without having to be charged for it and can I just go on and download it and move on? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 209.142.166.70 (talk • contribs)

  • If the statement that it is in the public domain is correct, yes. "Able to be used in the public domain" doesn't mean anything, though, so if that is what it really says someone may just be confused, and of course it is also imaginable that whoever asserted this (you don't say what site) could be wrong. A link would be useful in giving you a more definitive answer. - Jmabel ! talk 15:49, 21 July 2014 (UTC)

  • Alright, The information about the train wreck I mentioned a few minutes ago did say the license had expired and it's from the Weesp Train Wreck of 1918, but what I want to do is use it as an example of a train wreck that happened in my manuscript in 1934 and when it says "attribute" are you saying I have to acknowledge who the photo came from? (Of which I have no problem with that), and if you could, can you explain this briefly so that a I can understand it? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 209.142.166.70 (talk • contribs)
It would really help if you could identify what photo you're talking about. First you mentioned that it was a train wreck in Sweden, but the Weesp train disaster happened in the Netherlands. Are you talking about File:Weesp 1918 Train Disaster.jpg? LX (talk, contribs) 21:37, 21 July 2014 (UTC)

I'd like this file to be of use for members of the wiki group to help expand knowledge and information of its users. Yet i am unsure of licensing and copyright tie-ups. • Please see Commons:Scope. Presumably the copyright belongs to the photographer (or possibly to Volkswagen). I gather you are not the rights-holder, so you can't grant the rights to re-use the image, and unless you can get the rights-holder's permission (see COM:OTRS it should be deleted from Commons. - Jmabel ! talk 00:22, 22 July 2014 (UTC)

Can I use this National Cancer Institute image?

I think this NCI illustration explains the concept of "carcinoma in situ" better than the en.Wikipedia article's present illustration. Can I just upload it to Commons? The NCI seems to have released some files on a compatible license, but I'm not sure how to tell what's what. --Anthonyhcole (talk) 02:47, 28 July 2014 (UTC)

Yes. I uploaded most of the files in Category:Media from National Cancer Institute Visuals Online, and the format and licence I used has never caused any issues. My batch upload was back in Jan 2013, if a significant number (like a few hundred) have been released on the NCI website since then, I would be happy to look at running a refresh in a few weeks. -- (talk) 03:18, 28 July 2014 (UTC)
Actually it depends which image(s) you are referring to, because the actual image pages have a field at the bottom with the words "Reuse Restrictions". The ones that have no restrictions can be freely uploaded. Thus the photos in that link are all PD but most of the illustrations are copyright protected and you would need permission from the illustrator, apart from the first one (Breast Cancer Ductal Carcinoma in Situ), which is PD. Green Giant (talk) 08:12, 28 July 2014 (UTC)
Good point, I recall filtering out any with restrictions when I ran my upload. -- (talk) 10:59, 28 July 2014 (UTC)

Contributing media as a film archive

hello,

I work for Chicago Film Archives, a non-profit film archive dedicated to preserving Chicago/Midwest-related material. I would like to upload short clips from films that would enhance pages related to Chicago history (people, places, events). Some examples could include: footage of demonstrations and riots during the 1968 Democratic National Convention in Chicago, home movie footage depicting the Blizzard of '79, a clip of former Conservative Vice Lords leader Bobby Gore speaking about the gang, home movie footage of the 1933 World's Fair (a rare perspective of the Fair), etc. We have a vast amount of digitized media that I believe would be of great use to researchers.

I've noticed that many archives or library organizations (Library of Congress, Open Images, Europeana) have a kind of institutional status on Wikipedia that allows them to submit their own holdings. From what I understand, establishing a username based on an organization is discouraged. I am wondering how such an official status is obtained, or what would be the best way of uploading this media without a conflict of interest. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, -- T.werlen (talk) 19:00, 28 July 2014 (UTC)

Hello T.werlen. Thank you for highlighting this archive, it sounds very interesting. I think the most relevant introductory pages for you would be Commons:Partnerships, Commons:GLAM and GLAM-WIKI. Help uploading new logo for Brand page

Hi there,

I work for the brand management company that represents the brand "The Franklin Mint". I need to upload a new logo image for the brand page so the image is updated in Wikipedia + Google search. Can you help me upload this? I am a registered user I just haven't been confirmed? I think?

  • I'm not aware of any such thing as a "brand page"; it would be useful if you would link the page you are talking about.
  • Is this a text logo simple enough not to be copyrightable? Because otherwise I really doubt that the Franklin Mint wants to give an irrevocable free license to their logo, which is the only condition under which Commons could display a copyrighted logo. (It would still be trademarked, but trademark really doesn't apply to most adaptations.) - Jmabel ! talk 00:45, 16 July 2014 (UTC)

File transfer to Commons

Hello, could someone transfer this file [4] to Wikimedia Commons? As you can see the copyright has expired, it's in the public domain. I would really appreciate some help, Gtrbolivar (talk) 06:21, 23 July 2014 (UTC)

I can't see that; that file has no indication of when it was taken or who took it, and it's not inconcievable the photographer is known and still alive.--Prosfilaes (talk) 07:08, 23 July 2014 (UTC)
No, there is an indication, if you look closely at the bottom of the licence template it says "the copyright of this image expired in Hungary 70 years after the death of its author". So the photographer is dead at least 70 years ago. Gtrbolivar (talk) 07:29, 23 July 2014 (UTC)
No, the only conclusion we can draw from that is that somebody added a license template that says that. Without a name of a photographer, there's no reason to believe that.--Prosfilaes (talk) 08:09, 23 July 2014 (UTC)
Τhere are thousands of photos in Commons (with that kind of license) that doesn't mention the name of the photographer. The image shows Bukovi in his early twenties, so you can easily understand that the photo was taken sometime between 1923 and 1928. That's the obvious reason why you should believe what the template suggests. In any case, the original uploader informs us that the image is free of any copyright and that it belongs in the public domain. Anyway, can I talk with someone else about this? Where can I forward my request? Is there an admin who can help me on this? Thank you in advance, Gtrbolivar (talk) 09:22, 23 July 2014 (UTC)
Even the file source as given at the Hungarian Wikipedia is invalid. I agree that the photo was taken between 1920 and 1935 (his active time as a soccer player). But what makes you believe that the photographer died more than 70 years ago? After all, Bukovi himself lived until 1985, so why could the photographer not also have lived until, say, the 1970s or 1980s? Also, without any source information, you can't really claim the photographer was unknown. Such a claim would also need some evidence of research, like asking the clubs where he played if they have that head-shot in their archives, and maybe even know who the photographer was. Or finding contemporary publications of the photo. Photos from that period are rather difficult, and in this particular case too many things are basically wrong: wrong license tag, no source information, no publication information. Caroline Mareno carolinemareno@gmail.com

Permission that only allows you to use the photograph for a specific purpose is not sufficient for a file to be hosted on Commons. For that, we need the copyright holder (usually the photographer rather than the subject) to approve publication under a license that allows anyone to use, modify and redistribute the content for any purpose, including commercial purposes. If the copyright holder is willing to do that, you should follow this procedure to document it. If the subject really is the copyright holder, you'll also need to include a copy of the copyright transfer agreement, employment contract, or work made for hire contract – whichever applies. To nominate a category for deletion

How to nominate a category for deletion? Thank you for your help. Vzeebjtf (talk) 23:13, 22 July 2014 (UTC)

  • Normally, one nominates a category for "discussion" (there should be a button in the left nav of the category page). One possible outcome of that discussion is a decision to delete. - Jmabel ! talk 23:58, 22 July 2014 (UTC)
Nobody objected (Commons:Categories for discussion/2014/05/Category:Strand Theatre), so I'd like to delete. How can I do that? Vzeebjtf (talk) 00:09, 23 July 2014 (UTC)
You shouldn’t close a discussion in which you‘ve participated, let alone one that you started. Where the result calls for administrative action, it should only be closed by a sysop, who will have the tools to act on the decision. However, in a situation like the above, in the absence of objections after this length of time I think you can feel free to create a new cat and move the content of the old one to it. Rather than be deleted, though, it might be better made into a disambiguation category, with links to the various theatres sharing the name. In the meantime I recommend that you undo your closure and removal of the tag. (Proposing the category for discussion is the same as nominating for deletion—a euphemism, if you like—so your closing comment doesn’t make a lot of sense to me.)—Odysseus1479 (talk) 02:46, 23 July 2014 (UTC)
"…create a new cat and move the content of the old one to it. Rather than be deleted, though, it might be better made into a disambiguation category…" I'm afraid I don't understand how to do it. Vzeebjtf (talk) 04:42, 23 July 2014 (UTC)
For the first part, what i usually do is look for a similar category to use as a prototype. In this case Landmark Theatre (Syracuse, New York) looks like a good example (it seems usual to spell out New York). I then Edit the category page and Copy its contents; instead of saving I then change the name in the URL in my browser toolbar to the new category name, which takes me to the Create page. I then Paste the text and categories from the prototype page and make the appropriate changes, additions & deletions as necessary. (in this case removing the historic-registry & locality cats, and the Wikipedia link; I would also add Brick buildings in Syracuse, New York, and remove that one from the postcard after moving.) Save the category page, then change the category name in the postcard description page.
The second part, to make the old one a disambiguation cat, was just a suggestion; I don‘t know whether or not it’s a common practice in cases of this kind. What do others here think?—Odysseus1479 (talk) 05:55, 23 July 2014 (UTC)
I'm strongly in favor of disambiguation categories in cases like this, but there is no solid consensus on creating them. - Jmabel ! talk 16:11, 23 July 2014 (UTC)
I've followed Odysseus' advice (thank you), and also updated the cfd entry (Commons:Categories for discussion/2014/05/Category:Strand Theatre) with the question of a dab. Vzeebjtf (talk) 17:52, 24 July 2014 (UTC)

Question about publishing images

I was recently at Pori Jazz 2014, mainly to see one of my favourite bands, Pet Shop Boys. At the same day there were two other major bands performing: Hurts and George Clinton & Parliament Funkadelic. The staff had no problems with people photographing Hurts or George Clinton & Parliament Funkadelic, but told us that photographing Pet Shop Boys wasn't allowed. I noticed people were photographing them anyway, so I took some pictures myself when I thought no one was looking. I have tried to contact the manager of Pet Shop Boys about this but haven't received a reply. Is it OK to publish these images on WikiMedia Commons or not? JIP (talk) 19:12, 23 July 2014 (UTC)

Commons doesn't care. Commons:Image_casebook#Museum_and_interior_photography says that any potential issues would be between you and the band or venue.--Prosfilaes (talk) 19:58, 23 July 2014 (UTC)
Hi! We're not able to give any legal advice here, and without knowing more about the circumstances (jurisdiction – I'm guessing Finland, conditions of entry, what the specific photos show, etc.), it's hard to give any specific advice at all, but I'll give some pointers to some relevant reading. Commons' position on photography house rules can be found at Commons:Copyright rules by subject matter#Museum and interior photography. Commons:Photographs of identifiable people is also relevant. Other considerations include copyrighted stage designs (unless their inclusion is incidental) and whether the photos were shot directly or reproduced footage from a jumbotron. LX (talk, contribs) 20:06, 23 July 2014 (UTC)
The photographs are of the band directly. I would have found it very boring to be only able to photograph a video screen showing live footage of the band. Neil Tennant, the singer of the band, is clearly identifiable in some of the photographs. Chris Lowe, the keyboard player, however is well known for his trademark habit of not doing anything at all except standing behind his keyboard stand playing music during the entire concert, so photographs of him are less clearly identifiable. There were also two dancers, one man and one woman, who wore costumes during the entire concert and are thus not identifiable. I'm not sure if it counts, but Pori Jazz is an open-air festival, and the band was playing on an open-air stage. I don't think the stage itself is copyrightable, but Pet Shop Boys had an extensively visual background video show during the entire concert, which is clearly copyrightable. This is in contrast to Hurts, who merely displayed their logo, and George Clinton & Parliament Funkadelic, who had no background graphics whatsoever, just the empty stage background. If I upload the photographs, are they allowed or will they get deleted? I assume I'm not breaking any law here, but I'm not sure if the forbid of photography came from the band or from the festival itself. I still haven't received a reply from the band's manager. JIP (talk) 18:27, 24 July 2014 (UTC)
I think it's unlikely that they would be deleted or that you would get in trouble in any way for it. LX (talk, contribs) 18:44, 24 July 2014 (UTC)

I don't doubt any of those statements. Is it in the public domain, and if so on what basis? - Jmabel ! talk 00:31, 24 July 2014 (UTC)
Hello indeed. Please read Commons:Copyright rules by subject matter#Internet images. LX (talk, contribs) 18:47, 24 July 2014 (UTC)

Finding recent images on a topic

I'm a long-time user of new-article alerting bots in en.wiki (pages such as https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:AlexNewArtBot/NZSearchResult ) and would like to process relavent images on commons too. Given a set of keywords ("zealand", "auckland", "maori" and "wellington") is there a sane way to find images recently uploaded to commons? In an ideal world, content from here would appear on en.wiki alerts... Stuartyeates (talk) 21:31, 24 July 2014 (UTC)

CatScan disabled

Dos someone know if the CatSacan (not CatScan V2) will be available again? It was very useful to search for images (thumbs), mainly in categorie trees with a lot of sub-categories and very few images on each (e.g. Category:Boeing 737 by airline). Is there another tool that somehow replaces it? Thanks--JotaCartas (talk) 23:51, 24 July 2014 (UTC)

P.S - I know the gadget FastCII, but it uses to much (bandwith? / processor time?) not showing all the files (at least for me)--JotaCartas (talk) 23:58, 24 July 2014 (UTC)

>>>> HELP! File:Karl_W_Richter.jpg How to CATEGORIZE (United States Air Force Pilot)???

Would someone please help me put File:Karl_W_Richter.jpg into a category, please? I don't understand how they work or how to find the one for him. Thanks!! Azx2 06:26, 21 July 2014 (UTC)

Hello,
I added Category:United States Air Force airmen‎. Regards, Yann (talk) 09:14, 21 July 2014 (UTC)
You can also go to the article in en.Wikipedia Karl W. Richter, find the categories there and place the file in the related categories in the commons.
If you want, and have more than one photo, you can create the Category:Karl W. Richter, place the photos there an categorize the new category the same way as described above. Regards --JotaCartas (talk) 09:52, 21 July 2014 (UTC)
The information on this file seems to be completely wrong. Why do you think that the English Wikipedia uploader is the author? There is nothing on the English Wikipedia file description to suggest that's the case. (Yes, I do realize that some tools for transferring files from other projects stupidly add this by default, but as the Commons uploader, you are responsible for making sure that the file description here is correct. You can and you should correct such misinformation when transferring files here.) And I find it very hard to believe that this file is subject to the GNU Free Documentation License. {{PD-USGov-Military-Air Force}} seems a lot more likely, but we'd need a verifiable source for that. (Again, I realize that this claim comes from the file description on English Wikipedia, but again, since you're responsible for the file description here, you should evaluate such claims critically.) Hello, LX. Thank you for responding to my request for help. You sound like you are very experienced and I feel like an incompetent schmuck for not having done things properly. Is there the chance that you would you be willing to mentor me in taking the remedial actions that you suggest? I am devastated to learn that I transferred this file incorrectly - even though it was my first time to do so, I would never have wanted to introduce errors or inaccuracies into the new file and am just so upset with myself for even attempting to do it. I should've known that I wouldn't be able to do this properly and wish I hadn't, but now I feel like I don't have any choice but to see it through. Oh geeze :( I >really< would appreciate any help/guidance you could provide, especially because I can't imagine how upset people will be at me if the file has to be deleted and the article stripped of its image. I'm so upset already as it is. If you can't or won't help me resolve the issues you cited, should that be interpreted as disapproval? Am I gonna get in trouble? Oh please help me fix this - I want to do what's right but I lack confidence and some experience...ok, thank you again for taking the time to advise me that I dropped the ball. Azx2 07:05, 25 July 2014 (UTC)
Relax, Azx2, you won't get into trouble. The problem with this file is that the original file description page at Wikipedia is insufficient. There's no way you could've gotten this right without some experience. So let's do some detective work together:
  • The original source of the image was here, but the link is dead. The internet archive has a copy of the page as it was in 2007, but the images are missing there.
  • Even without the images we can easily see from that, that the licenses at Wikipedia are clearly wrong. Neither the GNU Free Documentation License nor the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike 3.0 license assigned to the image at en:File:Karl W Richter.jpg are mentioned at the original source.
  • Since the original source is a US-military website, one could now guess that the image was taken by a US-soldier on duty, and replace the license tags with {{PD-USGov-Military}} or probably even {{PD-USGov-Military-Air Force}}.
  • Without further information about the image, it's impossible to be 100% sure that this is correct. I used the Google image search gadget (can be enabled somewhere in your account preferences) to search for other versions of this image on the web that could tell us something about the photographer but I didn't get any useful results.
  • My approach would now be to correct the information as good as possible (link the original source and the archived version, change the author to {{Unknown}}, change the license to {{PD-USGov-Military-Air Force}}) and then seek further input from others. My preferred option would be to play with open cards and simply nominate it for deletion, mentioning that I'm not 100% sure about the copyright status and ask people whether they think it's reasonable to assume that it's in the public domain based on the information we have got. If they agree it will be kept, otherwise it will be deleted. Another, less drastic option would be to ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright first.
I suggest you try to do this yourself and we have an eye on it to help you out if there's a problem. Cheers, --El Grafo (talk) 08:44, 25 July 2014 (UTC)

Copyright help regarding File:Corrida poster spain 1955.JPG

Hello. I have obtained an official e-mail permission (forwarded to permissions-commons) to upload this image into wiki commons from the owner operating the site where the image is stored (Regional Library of Murcia, Spain). The person who replied on behalf of the Library stated the image is copyright free, but I am not sure which copyright tag applies. The author is unknown, the original country of issue is Spain, the date of issue is 1955, the publisher is "Litografia Velasco (Torrerias) Bravo Murillo 30, Madrid" (written down from the bottom of the poster). I have noticed the image is now tagged as marked for deletion unless there is a proper copyright tag applied. Unfortunately I am not sure which tag (if any) is applicable. Do you think you can help?

--Dd1495 (talk) 13:14, 15 July 2014 (UTC)

IMHO Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 Unported (CC BY-SA 3.0) {{Cc-by-3.0}} license for the photograph, according to Europeana User contributions, article 5. The poster itself should be PD, according to Com:CRT#Spain The pieces of work situated permanently in parks, streets, squares and other public ways can be reproduced, distributed and communicated freely by using paintings, drawings, photographies and audiovisual procedures. A poster glued or thumbtacked to a wall/pole is permanently displayed. Otherwise (unknown author) it would be in the public domain 70 years after publication -> 2025. --Hedwig in Washington (mail?) 01:32, 16 July 2014 (UTC)

many thanks for your time and your kind assistance. will try to apply the tag suggested and keep my fingers crossed--Dd1495 (talk) 18:46, 22 July 2014 (UTC)

Hi Hedwig, not sure whether you or anyone else is interested in the merits of the case, but just in case you are here is the saga as if develops until now:

  1. I have applied the tag suggested;
  2. the image got deleted anyway, the reason quoted no tag for 7 days;
  3. I have requested undeletion quoting your opinion (among oher typical embittered-user-in-love-with-himself ;-) comments)
  4. my request was opposed on the usual 80 years copyright ground
  5. I have replied to the opposed note developing the thesis further on
  6. the discussion was closed and undeletion request archived with info that I should forward the permission from copyright holder to OTRS
  7. I have forwarded a note from Murcia to OTRS (for the third time already)

Hope the final point will be undeletion, but I rather sense trouble as the note forwarded to OTRS is not from copyright holder, since Regional Library claims there is no copyright at all

again thanks for your kind assistance Dd1495 (talk) 07:36, 27 July 2014 (UTC)

There was another file already on the site...

I don't know if this is the right place to ask, but anyway...

I try to upload a picture of a person for a biography article, but I receive the message "There was another file already on the site with the same content, but it was deleted." The name of the deleted file is "Ada Bluebells - 403 KB.jpg". Acc2 to the log it was deleted in 2012. What do I do to upload the new file? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Solhanse (talk • contribs) 20:43, 25 July 2014‎ (UTC)

More importantly than when it was deleted, the log also tells you why it was deleted. In this case, it was deleted as the result of Commons:Deletion requests/File:Ada Bluebells - 403 KB.jpg. The reason for that deletion nomination is that was deemed to be outside of Commons' project scope. Perhaps the file was unused at the time and the file description did not do a good job of explaining who the subject was. If you can explain why it is within Commons' project scope, you can request undeletion. There is another concern which may be raised, though. Also based on the log, it looks like the uploader claimed to be both the subject and the author of the photo. This may not be the case unless it's a self-portrait. Perform batch task

From some reason I don't see the Perform batch task, can someone help? thanks, Eitan96 (talk) 06:47, 31 July 2014 (UTC)

Can you clarify? Did you see it before and then it disappeared? What did you change before this happened? Did you look into the javascript console in your browser and what it shows? Ruslik (talk) 19:20, 2 August 2014 (UTC)
I wasn't see it before, only recently I understand that this thing is exist. I searched in the javascript console now and found nothing about it. I'm using firefox, and also checked chrome. Thanks for your help! Eitan96 (talk) 21:22, 2 August 2014 (UTC)
Eitan96, what you are looking for is part of Visual File Change. Have a look at Help:VisualFileChange.js for the steps for installing this. Green Giant (talk) 22:01, 2 August 2014 (UTC)

How can I update a file?

Hi! I need to update a political map by changing some of the colors on it, but I'm totally clueless about how to so this. Can someone please help me? SouthParkfan19 (talk) 09:33, 28 July 2014 (UTC)

Hej, read COM:OVERWRITE, it should be all linked here. There is a link left bottom to upload a new version.User: Perhelion (Commons: = crap?)13:17, 28 July 2014 (UTC)
But be careful with this sort of thing. Often, the information as of one or another date is useful, so the old content may not be something you'd want to overwrite; this may call for a different name. Since you weren't specific about the map in question, it's hard to know. - Jmabel ! talk 23:51, 28 July 2014 (UTC)

SVG upload problem

Hi,

I am trying to upload a new version of "Mississippi Delta SVG Map.svg" and I get the following error:

"This file contains HTML or script code that may be erroneously interpreted by a web browser. See the FAQ for more information."

All the SVGs I create are done using Adobe Illustrator and I have never encountered this problem before. Has something changed in the software framework apropos parsing of SVG code?

FWIW, the file is W3C validated.

Thanks, Philg88 (talk) 06:56, 28 July 2014 (UTC)

Try Commons:SVG Check. Often this is because of URLs quoted in the file, or due to mouse-over actions or similar on links. -- (talk) 11:01, 28 July 2014 (UTC)
I had in the past the same problem, please give a description here bugzilla: 67044 (attach the file elsewhere, so someone can check it)User: Perhelion (Commons: = crap?)13:14, 28 July 2014 (UTC)
I stripped the filter tags off the file and it uploaded without a problem. See bugzilla:67044. The resulting map looks okay to me. -- (talk) 14:16, 28 July 2014 (UTC)
@: Sorry no hard feelings, this map was not the question to this thread. This was only an example, the issue was already exactly described there.User: Perhelion (Commons: = crap?)20:37, 28 July 2014 (UTC)

There are no filter tags in the SVG - the problem IMHO can only lie in the W3C links.

@Perhelion: I'm not sure what the current status is with bugzilla: 67044 so I don't want to breach etiquette by posting in the wrong place.

The new version of the file for upload is here

Philg88 (talk) 05:43, 29 July 2014 (UTC)

Hey @Philg88: , thank your for showing this file. Indeed there is simply an extern (local) linked image in this (more precisely, a lot, search for xlink:href=" ), which is not allowed yet (and has never been worked here, old uploaded images render with an error image replacement). Embed them on save or convert them.User: Perhelion (Commons: = crap?)07:14, 29 July 2014 (UTC)
@SVG Check: as mentioned, don't recognize that, this is a fault of this tool (I'll give this back to Jarry). It only warns about this code enable-background="new " You must/can simply (mass) remove this with a text-editor.User: Perhelion (Commons: = crap?)07:27, 29 July 2014 (UTC)
@Perhelion: You're a star. Thanks for your kind attention on this. I have no idea what that PNG link was doing in the SVG in the first place. Then again, Adobe Illustrator seems to have a mind of it's own when it comes to SVGs. Not as bad as Inkscape though with all its weird "sodipodi" stuff :) Cheers, Philg88 (talk) 11:40, 29 July 2014 (UTC)

No subject

Dear help desk,

The Upload Wizard, does not work on my computer for some weeks now. Is there any malfunction or it is my computer?

Actia Nicopolis (talk) 17:17, 29 July 2014 (UTC)

The Upload Wizard is pretty much in a perpetual state of brokenness. It isn't broken for everyone all the time, but I don't recall a time since it was introduced that we went more than a few days without people reporting enigmatic problems with indefinitely spinning wheels and unhelpful error messages, and nobody responsible for its introduction seems to want to take responsibility for responding to feedback or making sure it works properly. Have you tried Commons:Upload? It tends to be much more reliable. LX (talk, contribs) 17:59, 29 July 2014 (UTC)

Description

Something wrong with the upload wizard ? It seems the description field doesn't work. Nedim Ardoğa (talk) 19:53, 29 July 2014 (UTC)

If it lets you upload your file then you should just fix the description afterwards. The unholy upload wizard is always broken, so I recommend using Special:Upload which is more reliable and useful. Green Giant (talk) 20:20, 29 July 2014 (UTC)

Jan Nicolaas

I was to add the photo from here: http://boxrec.com/media/index.php/Jan_Nicolaas to Jan Nicolaas. Is this ok? I read the guide and wasn't sure.

Hmm. There is no information on that page that this picture is free or in the public domain. So, without more information, no. You probably need to find who is the photographer, and where it was first published. Regards, Yann (talk) 17:13, 30 July 2014 (UTC)
