Uploading Certain Images

Hello! I created some musical notes I would like to upload to Wikimedia Commons. The images have an element of a used image which was public domain. Can I upload it under my license and not credit the public domain picture? Can I upload it to Wikimedia Commons? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Chsieh3724 (talk • contribs) 00:57, 1 January 2022‎ (UTC)

  • That's a little hard to follow: in particular, "The images have an element of a used image which was public domain" could mean a lot of things, and isn't very clear.
  • That said: there is no legal requirement to credit something that is in the public domain, but there are usually two good reasons to do so. (1) Intellectual honesty. (2) Clarity about the basis of your copyright claim, effectively: "this aspect is copyrighted, this other aspect is public domain." That will help a lot if your image is ever challenged as a copyvio of something that is actually not copyrighted. - Jmabel ! talk 17:22, 1 January 2022 (UTC)

document submission

Sorry Sir/Mdm. I'm having some problems uploading my file because your system classified it as 'docx'. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Dr norman s (talk • contribs) 09:07, 1 January 2022 (UTC)

Dr norman s: On this page, Commons:File types, you will see all the file types we accept on the commons, which are for various media. On the individual language wikis MS Word documents do not work because you must type your prose in the edit box or cut and paste prepared text there. What exactly are you trying to upload? Can someone tell me why wikicommons or something deleted my home page, watchlist, etc of a few days age??

Just that. I got informed of a left message from wikicommons on my talk page, looked at it and then all my account stuff disappeared, a few days after I set it up and it sat quietly while I did nothing to deserve it. Home page, watchlist, etc all gone???? WTF??? Send an email to dr.gregory.retzlaff@protonmail.com because I can't see how you can communicate with me with my talk page disappeared. Pretty opaque software. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Dr.gregory.retzlaff (talk • contribs)

@Dr.gregory.retzlaff: Nothing of the kind appears deleted here. I noted you also have a user page on English Wikipedia. Is your watchlist gone if you look at that weblocation? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Dr.gregory.retzlaff . You will have watchlists and user pages at every seperate project. Regards, Ellywa (talk) 08:21, 1 January 2022 (UTC)
Well, your account on Commons was created this morning 6:57. Not surprisingly, you have no uploads so far and, consequently, none of your edits was deleted. Your Commons-talkpage is at User talk:Dr.gregory.retzlaff. No idea what your complaint is about. --Túrelio (talk) 08:24, 1 January 2022 (UTC)
Do I reply directly to you here? This wikipedia software is Byzantine. To repeat, at the top of this page is the headings I have on my account, but the stuff from the last few days is gone, there is a bit of stuff now from just now. Wiki sent me an alert and I followed the alert to wikicommons, which deleted my account information. At the top of this page, my English wiki. The top of the page I am on now, stuff gone. Dr.gregory.retzlaff (talk) 08:41, 1 January 2022 (UTC)

No. I look at the top of the page when I am logged on here, and the user page and watchpage etc I made a few days ago are no more. There is a bit of stuff up there now from just now. The account stuff when I signed up a few days ago is not there. I'm looking at it right now. This is my user page on wikipedia, in english. I don't know anything about projects, wikicommons said to go here and my account was wiped. It has all the same headings as before, the old stuff is not under them.

You have had a welcome message on this website, commons, please look at the url "commons.wikimedia.org". Please go to "en.wikipedia.org" and look around if you have a watchlist over there! Happy new year, it is not easy getting around, you will get used to the Byzentine system... some things are confusing indeed. Ellywa (talk) 09:29, 1 January 2022 (UTC)

I don't understand, it is all wikipedia, is it not??? And, why, pray tell, should a sophisticated computer system in the year 2021 be confusing??? And you accept as normal and acceptable that it is confusing??? Yeah, when I was a grad student I fought with the TECO text editor (look it up on wikipedia) on a PDP-11/23 running RSX, that was confusing, and just as confusing as this, have we not progressed??? Screw it, I'm glad I procrastinated on donating, I'll likely just ignore my account from now on, not contributing or give anything back, and just use wikipedia; you folk can work if you want . . . . stomme wiki, ik weet het wel, doei.

Haha, TECO, yes I remember that, I'm born 1954 and it was the first editor I learned. An eyeopener to experience real time editting after a period of punchtape and later punchcards... But I also remember the time when we had different logins on all the projects... these were unified long time ago, but still, we have different user pages and watchlists. Beleive me, this can be convenient. Please try to accept and work on the content of this beautiful projects, remember we are all volunteers.... also the software is maintained by volunteers, a tremendous task. Yes, I did my post-doctoral work in Amsterdam, ik heb in Almere Haven voor drie jaaren gewoond, maar mijn Nederlands is heel vreiselijk  :-( And I do remember rolls of paper tape and IBM type 29 card punches. And my New Year's resolution is to give up on wikipedia, but it won't let me delete my account, so I've undone the little correction I did a few days ago, and tot ziens and succes.
Dr.gregory.retzlaff (talk) 18:13, 1 January 2022 (UTC)
@Dr.gregory.retzlaff About 10 years ago, WMF merged the user accounts of the various projects such as NL.WP, EN.WP or Commons into one common account (SUL). The settings (for example the watchlist) remained local. The first is a big advantage (also for you) the second is debatable. Commons has decided to welcome all users who come to Commons for the first time via bot. This happened to you a few days ago. Since you state in your username that you are an academic, I would actually trust you to be able to find out such things yourself, or actually to have known them for a long time (as a Wikipedia author with an academic background). Wikipedia is a software that is structured completely differently than many commercial software. But this is necessary because Wikipedia is a non-profit organisation and not a SiliconValley start-up that aims to make a very few very rich. And that is exactly why you are here and not a customer of Enzyclopedica Britannica or Microsoft Encarta. C.Suthorn (talk) 09:54, 2 January 2022 (UTC)

What Copyright do I pick in UploadWizard for something at LOC whose protections have expired?

I have a photograph I am trying to upload that seems to be in the public domain according to its description at LOC; however, because the photograph is from after 1935, but was not taken by the US Government I am not sure what license to pick. The LOC resource is hec.38335 and the Rights Advisory says No known restrictions on publication. For more information, see Harris & Ewing Photographs - Rights and Restrictions Information https://www.loc.gov/rr/print/res/140_harr.html. Thanks! Snood1205 (talk) 14:08, 3 January 2022 (UTC)

Objection

Moin. How can I ... object to a file with the wrong name and no correction of same in the description? File in question is File:Franconia Notch and Appalachian Trail in New Hampshire LCCN2011631215.tif. I have no idea where that is, but it's not Franconia Notch. Apparently, it came from the Library of Congress, already with the wrong title. Regards, --G-41614 (talk) 19:08, 3 January 2022 (UTC)

Thank you very much. Hope I sort of did it right. Left additional comment on disc.page of file. Regards, --G-41614 (talk) 10:48, 4 January 2022 (UTC)

Updating Company Photo

Hello,

I'm trying to update our company logo and I keep getting a message that says the file may not be compatible. It is a .png and I am not sure where to go from here. (Our current logo is roughly 5 - 6 years out of date.

Thank you — Preceding unsigned comment added by RochesterPhilharmonic (talk • contribs) 19:39, 3 January 2022‎ (UTC)

@RochesterPhilharmonic: Hello. There are two issues here: For technical reasons you cannot overwrite a JPG like File:Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra logo (blue square).jpg with a PNG image. Moreover, according to our policies, the old logo may not be overwritten with a different image at all because we like to keep old versions for the sake of documentation. Please upload your new PNG logo as a separate file with a new filename. After that, the individual Wikipedia articles need to be updated one by one by replacing the image there.
On a sidenote, please sign your contributions to discussions like this one by typing four tilde characters ~~~~. This will add your username and a timestamp for reference. De728631 (talk) 21:17, 3 January 2022 (UTC)
@RochesterPhilharmonic: Also, any png image will look fuzzy when scaled down (due to design decisions discussed in phab:T192744) or jaggy when scaled up, so you may want to upload an svg or jpg version, too.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 04:48, 4 January 2022 (UTC)

Creating a template

I would like to create a template but I don't seem able to do so. Any suggestions? Ross Burgess (talk) 15:33, 4 January 2022 (UTC)

@Ross Burgess: Hi, and welcome. Please try to give precise details of any problem you encountered (what were you doing; on which page; what happened, what did any error messages say?). Where relevant, please give diffs.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 16:27, 4 January 2022 (UTC)
I was hoping to create a template similar to "Template:LGBT Collective" to identify files from the Falkland Historic Buildings project. I searched for "Template:Falkland Historic Buildings". It came up "We didn't find any results" but I was expecting to be invited to start creating a new template at that point. Ross Burgess (talk) 17:23, 4 January 2022 (UTC)
@Ross Burgess: You won't find anything by searching for something that doesn't exist. Start the template at Template:Falkland Historic Buildings (by the way, should that really be "Falkland" rather than "Falklands"?) - Jmabel ! talk 19:12, 4 January 2022 (UTC)
@Ross Burgess: Previously, when we searched for a page that didn't exist, we used to receive a red link offering us the opportunity to create that page. Unfortunately our current search tool doesn't include that feature. However, if you click on "Switch to Special:search" in the top right corner of your search results screen, you will switch to the old search tool and be offered the red link to create the page. From Hill To Shore (talk) 20:26, 4 January 2022 (UTC)
Many thanks - that's given me the hint I needed - Wikipedia still works more like the old search tool here. And no it's Falkland with no s - Fife, Scotland, not the South Atlantic! Ross Burgess (talk) 20:33, 4 January 2022 (UTC)

Flags?

are flags uploadable — Preceding unsigned comment added by AidenCasteel (talk • contribs) 16:35, 4 January 2022‎ (UTC)

  • @AidenCasteel: Some are, some aren't. It depends on their copyright status. What flag are you concerned with? - Jmabel ! talk 19:10, 4 January 2022 (UTC)
Henderson, KY AidenCasteel (talk) 01:04, 5 January 2022 (UTC)
    • The one shown here? Presumably either the young man who designed it or the city of Henderson owns the copyright. You could probably write to the city government and at least find out the status. The copyright-holder might well be willing to offer a free enough license for Commons such as {{tl|CC-BY-SA-4.0{{, but I doubt they would have thought to free-license it on their own. So you can't just upload it yourself, but you might be able to get the relevant permissions.
    • I would think the simplest way for them to indicate a license would be for the city to state that on their official city site, which you can then cite as a source. Failing that (might be hard to arrange if Jax Matthews held on to the copyright himself), he or they could go through the more cumbersome COM:VRT process. - Jmabel ! talk

Kan jeg omdøbe billedets tekst?

Help with Wikimedia OTRS release generator step 1

Hi, I’m not sure which category to pick. I inherited artwork and photos from a relative. I believe the artist’s wife took the photo in 1943. I think I’m supposed to use {{Cc-by-sa-4.0-heirs}} or possibly {{PD-US-no notice}} since the artist and his wife are both deceased and as their relative, I now own the photo. The photo is called File:Jean Henri Vigoureux in the U.S. Army circa 1943.jpg.

Also for all the drawings I scanned I fixed the summary box and made the Licenses Public Domain. All of these things have been nominated for deletion. What should I do next? Thank you. JHVfan (talk) 07:50, 5 January 2022 (UTC)

What year did the photographer pass away? Ciell (talk) 07:58, 5 January 2022 (UTC)
@JHVfan: You need to cover both the original country of publication (France, I believe) and the U.S. If the material was published without notice in France, then it would be correct to use both.
Also Pinging @Yann because he had nominated some of these for deletion. - Jmabel ! talk 16:15, 5 January 2022 (UTC)
Hi @Jmabel Thank you for your advice. And as I replied to @Ciell, I think I may have found the perfect tag for this situation, to add to the France photos and the France tag.JHVfan (talk) 18:50, 5 January 2022 (UTC)
Hi @CiellThe artist and his wife divorced around 1950. After that I don’t know what happened to her. But I just found a tag that I think might be perfect for this situation:
Public domain
The heirs of this work's copyright holder (usually the creator) have released it into the public domain. This applies worldwide.

In some countries this may not be legally possible; if so:

The heirs of the creator grant anyone the right to use this work for any purpose, without any conditions, unless such conditions are required by law.

Thank you for writing.JHVfan (talk) 18:43, 5 January 2022 (UTC)

Hi, the year of death is important to determine the PD though - I assume she was from the States if so Commons:Copyright_rules_by_territory/United_States#General_rules applies. Also important: who are the heirs of the diseased in this case? Owning a physical copy of an image is not the same as being a heir of the copyrights of the image. Ciell (talk) 19:02, 5 January 2022 (UTC)
@JHVfan: Yes, {{Cc-by-sa-4.0-heirs}} is OK for works created by your anscestors, but we usually require a confirmation via email. Please see COM:VRT for the procedure. Regards, Yann (talk) 19:34, 5 January 2022 (UTC)
@YannThank you for writing back. I’ve sent an email to the VRT team. Also, I’m replacing all the CC-by-sa-4.0-heirs tag on my photos with PD-heirs template, because I don’t think you can put CC and PD at the same time? JHVfan (talk) 20:09, 5 January 2022 (UTC)
@JHVfan: In this case, you can. If it is PD in the U.S., then that's just how it is in the U.S., but you can offer a specific license for use elsewhere in the world. - Jmabel ! talk 03:33, 6 January 2022 (UTC)

You should change that to the Url pointing to the source at Pinterest, otherwise it cannot be checked, if it was really posted there with a cc-by-sa-4.0 license and may be deleted. Covid-19 natural immunity

I wish to explore the effects of natural immunity to the SARS-CoV-2 virus (i.e., immunity as developed through immune system mechanisms in reaction to a natural infection from the SARS-CoV-2 virus) by analyzing and sharing information from reliable official sources (such as CDC, WHO, peer-reviewed studies) examining the effects of natural immunity in relation to whether there is reinfection or not. Every statement is required to be backed by either a peer-reviewed study (no "pre-print" versions allowed) and/or by a Virologist and/or an Immunologist and/or an Epidemiologist and/or a Molecular Biologist and/or a physician or other certified health professional who is recognized by an official board in such fields. People with a Bachelors degree in Science (B.Sc.) as well as medical investigative journalists can also contribute (provided that they do not quote or mention any affiliation to any questionable group(s) or networks) , as long as their statements are backed by reliable data that can be verified and that is not subject to subjective varied and sometimes contradicting interpretations. All angles and standpoints are to be welcomed to contribute to this virtual debate for the benefit of all of those wishing to get to the bottom of the issue by knowing the truth. No "conspiracy theories," no "finger-pointing," no "accusations" (even if quoting official reliable news backed by evidence) is ever to be allowed; criminal accusations are best to be left to law enforcement agencies and the judicial branch of the government so this forum will not cover this area. Wondering here if this would be agreeable to the Terms of Service, before we begin.

This seems out of scope for Commons, which is a repository of media such as free-use images and sounds. --Malcolmxl5 (talk) 15:22, 7 January 2022 (UTC)

Moving a file

I just uploaded a file ([1]) with a needlessly specific and (it turns out) inaccurate title. (See page for details.) I realised my mistake and added to the description etc., but I forgot to change the title. After realising this, I tried to move the page to better reflect the image. (To: [2].) However, a message appeared on the page and it was not moved.

I was wondering if I did something wrong or if things will sort themselves out?

Doubt regarding copyright of an advertisement

Well, I've been wanting to upload this particular advertisement under the template:PD-US-no notice ad template. Now, I was about to do it until I noticed the logo of Decca Records on the bottom with the Ⓡ. I'm speculating that in this particular case, the registered trademark is meant to protect the logo of the record company instead of the full advertising. An example of a clear copyright notice could be seen on the bottom-left of this ad. So should I steer clear of this one, or is it possible to upload it by cropping the company logo and just using the content of the ad above?

Thanks in advance.--GDuwenTell me! 21:20, 7 January 2022 (UTC)

@GDuwen: The registered trademark has nothing to do with copyright. Unless there is a notice like "© 1961 Decca Records", this is not protected under US law. So {{PD-US-no notice advertisement}} would indeed be your template of choice. De728631 (talk) 21:25, 7 January 2022 (UTC)

How do I delete a subcategory?

Hi all, I created a subcategory I thought didn't exist, I then realised it already exists under a different category and a different name. Is there a way to have it deleted as it is now a duplicate?

The category I created was https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Railway_stations_in_Victoria, I found this: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Train_stations_in_Victoria,_Australia. I know this probably seems like a dumb move on my part (and it is), I am a bit too used to editing enwiki where most train stations are referred to as "railway stations" and not "train stations" and assumed it was the same here.

Sorry for the hassle and thanks for any help! BakuFromAus (talk) 11:09, 7 January 2022 (UTC)

Rather than deletion, it would probably be best to redirect to the other category. That way if a future editor tries the same plausible category name, they will end up at the correct location. From Hill To Shore (talk) 11:12, 7 January 2022 (UTC)
Ah, didn't think of that. Done. Thank you! BakuFromAus (talk) 11:30, 7 January 2022 (UTC)
@BakuFromAus: just to clarify, use a soft redirect with {{Cat redirect}}. - Jmabel ! talk 19:30, 7 January 2022 (UTC)
@Jmabel: Is hard redirect where it automatically redirects you to another page? Not sure if those exist on commons/if that's what you meant but I didn't do that, I did "Category redirect" as opposed to "Cat redirect" - am I correct in thinking cat is just shorthand for "Category" or am I misinterpreting this and "Category redirect" is a hard redirect. Either way, I did update it to cat redirect. Thanks BakuFromAus (talk) 05:59, 8 January 2022 (UTC)
@BakuFromAus: You took the action that Jmabel suggested before they added their comment.[3] The link Jmabel provided to Cat redirect is itself redirected to Category redirect. I recently inserted the wrong type of redirect on a category and a bot corrected me a short while later.[4] Your edit was perfectly fine here and it wouldn't have been a problem if you got it wrong, as the bot would have corrected you. Wrong information listed for U.S. Civil War prisoner of war? Andersonville VS Belle Isle

Hello. This image, as you can see from the file name, is described on Wikipedia as "This a picture of one of the survivors of Andersonville Prison. Union Army soldier on his release from Andersonville in May, 1865." https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Andersonvillesurvivor.jpg

Wikipedia includes as the image source a link to United States Library of Congress's Prints and Photographs division: http://hdl.loc.gov/loc.pnp/cph.3g07966

However, if you go to the linked Library of Congress catalog entry, it lists different description information for the image. The image title there is "[Unidentified emaciated prisoner of war, from Belle Isle, Richmond, at the U.S. General Hospital, Div. 1, Annapolis]" and the entry includes a note "Erroneous caption on card: 'Returned Federal prisoners from Andersonville prison.'" This indicates that the Andersonville attribution on Wikipedia is a mistake and that the image should be affiliated with the Belle Isle prison camp instead.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Belle_Isle_(Richmond,_Virginia)

I don't know anything about how to change image file information on Wikipedia/Wikimedia, so I'm posting the information here instead. Thanks. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Turtleduck (talk • contribs) 21:34, 8 January 2022‎ (UTC)

I'm looking into this right now and will make changes if needed, but the short answer is that you can edit the file description yourself, just like editing anything on Wikipedia, and you can ask for someone to rename it via the process described at Commons:File renaming. Beeblebrox (talk) 00:39, 9 January 2022 (UTC)
I've confirmed what you've said about it, the LoC description is quite clear, and have therefore changed the description, renamed the file, and removed it from the English Wikipedia article on Andersonville, but it looks like it is still in use in such articles on number of other projects. The image description does indicate that it is made from several other works, it is for sure a fake. I don't know if there is a template, but it is probably out of scope for Commons.I've nominated it for deletion. Beeblebrox (talk) 01:51, 9 January 2022 (UTC)

Can I upload scans from work in the public domain found on Internet Archive

Hello,

I am starting to dabble with Wikisource and read that it is helpful to include a scanned copy of the book I am trying to add to wikisource. The work I would like to add has been published in 1914 in the USA, and is therefore in the public domain in that country, and I found a digitized copy of the work on Internet Archive. My question is whether I am allowed to upload the .djvu scan file available on Internet Archive. What I don't understand is whether the digital file containing the copy of the book is also in the public domain, and whether I have the rights to add it to wikimedia commons.

The digital copy available on Internet Archive is the same as the one in the Library of Congress

Using images with Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 license in a published book

I'd like to use a photo with the Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 license as the basis for an illustration, to be used in a book which will be published and sold.

Will I meet all of the conditions of this license if I include the following information in the book, clearly referring to the illustration: - appropriate photographer credit - a link to the license - an indication that changes have been made?

Is there anything else I need to do in order to meet the conditions of this license?

I just want to make sure that the fact that the book will be sold doesn't somehow breach the rules of the Attribution-ShareAlike license, which requires that the derived illustration must also be free to use and amend, i.e. "shared alike".

Thank you for your help.

This seems perfect. A tip: please convince yourselve if the image is correctly licensed on Commons. Although we work hard to keep up with all daily uploads, sometimes we overlook copyrighted images which are taken from the internet or are scanned from printed media. Astronomy

I asked a question, on my laptop, what was the biggest Sun known in the Universe, and Wikipedia gave me insight into what was known. I am not a scientist but someone who is amazed by space. The information Wikipedia supplied opened my eyes {and my mind} to the massive size of Suns in the Universe which makes our Sun insignificant in power and size. Also, Wikipedia gave information about a group of Suns that have a mass about the same size as the planet Jupiter which is "mind-boggling". So, what I am asking, is there a group or forum of people within Wikipedia, who share the same interest as myself, or could Wikipedia supply more general information to my email address which I can then save. I hope my request will be considered. — Preceding unsigned comment was added by 94.196.190.183 (talk) 11:42, 11 January 2022 (UTC)

• Typically, the issues are the same for paper and on the Internet. What do you think would not apply on paper?
  • In the left navigation of the page User:GO69 there should be a link to email the user. (For what it's worth, this user has been active as recently as today.) Help needed to move a category over redirect: Fort Meade to Fort Meade, Maryland

I don't know how to move Category:Fort Meade to Category:Fort Meade, Maryland, where a redirect presently exists. I've worked on the contents of the "Fort Meade" category to be sure that it contains files that pertain only to the census-designated community in Maryland, matching its Wikidata. Many images needed to be reviewed and moved to a new subcategory — Category:Fort George G. Meade, the U.S. Army facility most often thought of as "Fort Meade". It also required moving some other images to the "Fort Meade (South Dakota)" category, and ... Well, it was a long haul, but it's done. The contents of Category:Fort Meade are now ready to move to Category:Fort Meade, Maryland but I can't do it myself. Can someone with the skills and knowledge move the category for me? Thanks in advance. — WFinch (talk) 03:20, 12 January 2022 (UTC)

Hi, and welcome. You indicated it's your own work. Usually when someone uploads a png logo, it's a copyright violation taken from the web. Please upload the full-size original of it per COM:HR, including any metadata, but it may be judged too complex to be under TOO in the country of origin, so you may need to license it on your official website or social media or send permission via VRT. Also, any png image will look fuzzy when scaled down (due to design decisions discussed in phab:T192744) or jaggy when scaled up, so you may want to upload an svg or jpg version, too. If you can't get a compliant license, the logo may still be uploaded to English Wikipedia in compliance with en:WP:F because we don't allow Fair Use here. Pinging @Ytoyoda as tagger. How to request a mass rename?

I'd like to request renaming 13 files, all with the same typo in their name.

The files are File:Berckzy Park 001.jpg through File:Berckzy Park 013.jpg and I think they should be named Berczy Park 001.jpg ... Berczy Park 013.jpg, respectively (with a superfluous k removed).
There are many files in commons whose names begin with Berczy Park (Special:AllPages/File:Berczy Park) but luckily there is no conflict in them.

Can I do that without editing all 13 description pages to add {{Rename}} to each of them? --CiaPan (talk) 18:01, 13 January 2022 (UTC)

How To Upload A Photo Of A Deceased Person

Hello, How can I upload a photo of a deceased person? It was made at a photo shop in 1980 for his personal use. Now we, his family, possess it and would like to add the copy to the article on Wikipedia. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Build2904 (talk • contribs) 1:08, 12 January 2022 (UTC)

  • @Build2904: I hate to say it but it's probably not going to be eligible for use on Commons. The situation is a little different in different countries, but in most countries the copyright would still persist and, unless it had been explicitly signed over, would belong to the photographer, the photo shop, or the respective heirs.
  • If you want to use it just on the English-language Wikipedia, and we lack other comparable photos of that person, see Wikipedia:Non-free_content#Images. If that is the route you are going, you'll also want to see en:Template:Non-free use rationale 2. Also, if that is the route you are going, further questions are better asked on the English-language Wikipedia, since this approach does not involve Commons. - Jmabel ! talk 02:34, 12 January 2022 (UTC)

Entirely standalone image ID

How do I create a unique image ID for my photographs and scans? Is there a scheme and a way to generate those? What popular schemes can I choose from? --95.115.85.117 16:41, 13 January 2022 (UTC)

  • I'm not sure what exactly you are asking. The only "ID" here, really, is the filename. Those must be unique and should be descriptive. Usually when there is already a file using the name you would want, most of us add a date or a number. But maybe you mean something else. - Jmabel ! talk 17:12, 13 January 2022 (UTC)
Ok, here, there is not such a thing: upload > get a number. But is there a system outside, where you can get one online? --77.2.154.121 04:19, 14 January 2022 (UTC)
There is the curid. You can look it up with a click on the "info" link of the file description page. Or you could generate an UUID/GUID and add it to the EXIF as unique object number. The file name in commons is unique but can be changed any minute and then be reused. --C.Suthorn (talk) 21:29, 15 January 2022 (UTC)

Creating a new copyright tag.

Hello, so lately I've been bringing over images from the (British) Ministry of Defence on cap badges, insignia, badges, etc. Though I've worked a lot on Wikipedia, I have very little experience on creating a new copyright tag here. See more here. All help is very much welcome! Coldstreamer20 (talk) 17:02, 10 January 2022 (UTC)

I've created a template which is of-course a start: Template:MoD (UK). Coldstreamer20 (talk) 17:15, 10 January 2022 (UTC)
The low resolution graphics of MOD badges or logos available from the "Defence Brand Portal" that are licensed under the terms of the Ministry Of Defence Illustration Licence are, unfortunately, not compatible with Commons. Per Commons:Licensing, Commons only accepts media that is free from copyright restrictions which would prevent them being used by anyone, anytime, for any purpose. The Ministry Of Defence Illustration Licence prohibits the licensee from using the graphics from the Defence Brand Portal on third party websites such as Facebook. Images and other media that are restricted to use on Wikipedia or Commons and not on third-party sites are not accepted on Commons. You could, however, upload such images to projects that accept Fair Use media (such as English Wikipedia), so long as you comply with their fair use policies. —RP88 (talk) 18:07, 10 January 2022 (UTC)
Ok, so I can do them on Wikipedia via fair use (as even stated in the license with a reference to Wikipedia), but not the Commons? Coldstreamer20 (talk) 19:31, 10 January 2022 (UTC)
English Wikipedia does allow the use of images that are "non-free" (i.e. works with restrictions that prevent them from being used for any purpose, in particular mediums, or commercially, etc.). Read more at en:Wikipedia:Non-free content. If you have questions about the use of non-free content on English Wikipedia the best place to ask is probably on English Wikipedia itself at en:Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. —RP88 (talk) 20:00, 10 January 2022 (UTC)
@Coldstreamer20: If you are interested in copyright or copyright templates, you may want to follow the discussions at Commons:Village Pump/Copyright and post your questions there. —RP88 (talk) 18:34, 10 January 2022 (UTC)
I had already commented about Coldstreamer20's extensive uploads at the Commons village pump - Commons:Village pump/Copyright/Archive/2021/12#Royal Regiment of Scotland cap badge and the Commons Administrators' noticeboard - Commons:Administrators'_noticeboard/Archive_87#Multiple copyvios but received no replies. I pointed out that they were likely to be copyright violations. The Ministry of Defence Illustration Licence terms says People are free to use MOD insignia for illustration purposes. For example, to include a regimental badge in a website such as Wikipedia for the purposes of describing in their own words what that regiment does. So it specifically uses Wikipedia as an example. However, this implies "fair use" only because the detailed license terms in Annex C say [not] j) for any commercial purpose, so I interpret this as a type of CC BY SA NC license. Michael D. Turnbull (talk) 11:21, 11 January 2022 (UTC)

@RP88: Thank you for your advice on the compatible of the Ministry of Defence Illustration Licence with Commons. Coldstreamer20 has uploaded I count over 80 Defence Brand Portal insignia images to Commons. Your advice to Coldstreamer20 was that they could upload a Defence Brand Portal image to Wikipedia as fair use if they complied with Wikipedia's fair use policy. Coldstreamer20 asked my advice if they should delete the Defence Brand Portal images on Commons and I told them that they should delete the images. Coldstreamer20 has nominated these images to be deleted and also other images. Sreejithk2000 advised Coldstreamer20 that they use {{Fair use delete}} to move File:21 Signal Regiment Banner.jpg to English Wikipedia. I'm not familiar with fair use delete is this an option available for the Defence Brand Portal images? Coldstreamer20 had started to upload the images to Wikipedia as fair use, however, they have recently been blocked indefinitely (pending appeal). The Defence Brand Portal images are used in many Wikipedia articles mostly in infoboxes. I note several images that were in use in these articles have now been deleted F5. Orphaned non-free use images. This had been a concern of Michael D. Turnbull for their image. I am concerned that many Wikipedia articles will be without images if Coldstreamer20 is unable to upload them to Wikipedia and that Wikipedia editors will have to upload replacement images if they are deleted from Commons.--Melbguy05 (talk) 03:49, 16 January 2022 (UTC)

CC License I want to use is not an option in Upload Wizard

Hello,

I am a new user (January 2022), Photograph R, and I am trying to upload one of my photos with this CC license Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivatives 4.0 International (CC BY-NC-ND 4.0) for my user page and for other non-commercial entities to use without derivatives. Neither the upload wizard or Global Preferences offers this option, and I am reluctant to follow through on the wizard upload for this particular photo with this default.

Having a photo removed

I would like to request that a photo of me be removed from Wikimedia commons. I've tried reaching out to the poster "HighMerrits" but can't seem to reach them.

How do I request a photo of myself to be removed? It's at: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Jason_Stadtlander.jpg

This has to do with a stalking problem and privacy issues. I'm happy to provide ID if needed to prove that it is me in the photo (I am the one on the right). — Preceding unsigned comment added by Shinzon10 (talk • contribs)

Hi! I am looking for the template that is used to mark poorly-sourced images that only link to the direct source (e.g. https://www.google.com/images/branding/googlelogo/2x/googlelogo_color_272x92dp.png) and not also to the page where they were embedded. I can't seem to find it anywhere lol

@Samimason: Hi, and welcome. Please upload the full-size original of it per COM:HR, including any metadata, but it may be judged too complex to be under TOO in the country of origin, so an authorized representative of the copyright holder may need to license it on their official website or social media or send permission via VRT. Also, if you consider using the png format, please note that any png image will look fuzzy when scaled down (due to design decisions discussed in phab:T192744) or jaggy when scaled up, so you may want to upload an svg or jpg version, too. If you can't get a compliant license, the logo may still be uploaded to English Wikipedia in compliance with en:WP:F because we don't allow Fair Use here. Two images of crew of Gemini 8 US space mission, one really bad quality, one excellent, both often used

An official NASA pic of the two Gemini 8 crewmen exists in two versions: File:Gemini 8 crew.jpg (12 file uses) looks and has a resolution as if it was photographed from an NTSC TV screen, whereas File:Portrait of the Gemini 8 prime crew.jpg (23 file uses) is really excellent. I think the bad one is older on Commons. As the NASA source photo is most likely identical (though the older image was a bit cropped down), I assume that both can be merged, or the like. I do not make any recommendation or suggestion, I just think this should be solved so that all readers in all languages will see the excellent version. Pittigrilli (talk) 12:58, 19 January 2022 (UTC)

  • Normally we don't delete in these circumstances, though I for one would not oppose it. The usual solution is to link the pair of files with {{Other version}}. I can't imagine anyone would object to the better one being used anywhere in Wikipedia, though. - Jmabel ! talk 16:52, 19 January 2022 (UTC)
I just exchanged the old bad one by hand in all 12 Wikipedias where it was used. Tiled Audubon deer image download

Hi, I came across a very high res scan of an Audubon image[5] we otherwise only have low res versions of[6], so I wonder if anyone knows how to get it at full res? The download button on the site doesn't work for me, and then there's just the tiles.. FunkMonk (talk) 15:08, 19 January 2022 (UTC)

Hi, if I click the download up left, I get about 6 different resolutions to choose from, the biggest being 8554 x 6645 pixel, which I just test-downloaded successfully. Does not work for you? Maybe try another browser? Otherwise, I can upload it here, no prob. Pittigrilli (talk) 15:25, 19 January 2022 (UTC)
When I click download, all that happens is that a new window with a tiny version of the image[7] opens, whether I use Firefox or Chrome. So yeah, if you could upload it here, it would be appreciated. FunkMonk (talk) 23:22, 19 January 2022 (UTC) FunkMonk (talk) 23:22, 19 January 2022 (UTC)
Ok, I will do that today. I will have to make a completely new file though, as Commons does not allow me to upload this improved version over the existing file (I already tried), which I find a bit absurd. Pittigrilli (talk) 10:55, 20 January 2022 (UTC)
Hello FunkMonk - Success, see File:American Elk - John J. Audubon - hi-res.jpg. This was a tough one for somebody like me who has never dealt with the details of art images here. I did my best, though some tunings might be needed: 1) A proper inclusion of the Website Digital library etc., I just provided the source link. I deleted the permission crap from the Brooklyn Museum and spared to include that from the new source - After all, it is clearly PD, and I think one can spare the confusing hints to "This museum allows to use blabla"). Else - the low res older file should be imho included in "Other versions" and the other way round. Ok, my part is done ;-) Pittigrilli (talk) 15:02, 20 January 2022 (UTC)

After a few edits, all annotations (done earlier by me) are no longer visible

I made some edits in File:Omega Speedmaster Omega Speedmaster Schumacher Edition compo.jpg in the last half an hour or so, mainly to improve the appearance of the two combined source files as thumbs, but also corrected my user/author name for the source files. Somewhere in this process, the annotations (about 10) did no longer appear. I thought it was just the last addition of a new category which inserted a kind of odd blank line in the wikitext, but my try to delete the blank line did not make the annotations come back. Please help, if I made a substantial mistake earlier feel free to revert. Pittigrilli (talk) 13:02, 22 January 2022 (UTC)

Predicting the jpg sizes of a tiff image here

For each page of my wiki I've programatically found a set of relevant commons files which I want to display in a HighslideGallery. This is straightforward for jpgs, but for tiffs I need to quote a particular image size, but there seems to be no consistent sizes here for the jpgs derived from TIFFs. Is there a way of getting finding out the image nearest to my desired size?

{{#hsimg:99|800|Belfort|{{filepath:FRANCHE COMTE TRANSPORT 2.jpg}}}} {{#hsimg:99|800|Hillman|{{filepath:Plan HILLMAN.tif|800px}}}}

works, but I had to manually find out the 800 from reading the TIFFs description page. What I really want is a template function I can use to find the nearest size to say 500px each time. The site uses many images, so manual coding isn't an option. Vicarage (talk) 07:38, 25 January 2022 (UTC)

Ah-ha, the image is generated to the requested size on demand, so I can control what I get. Problem solved. Vicarage (talk) 18:58, 25 January 2022 (UTC)

I cannot add a fourth language version in the description field of files

I tried to add a 4th language version, spanish, to file File:Canned Croatian veal goulash.jpg. If I do, the result is that the present ones all vanish except the first, en. I had the exact same error also with other files. Is there a limit to three languages, or what is the reason? (This can be seen in the file history) Pittigrilli (talk) 11:54, 25 January 2022 (UTC)

@Pittigrilli: This is caused by the "Language select" gadget, which hides some languages when a description includes a lot of them. You can turn it off in Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-gadgets. It's not the first language that's still displayed, but rather the language you're viewing the page in. If you change language (using the selector at the top of the page next to your user name if you're using the Vector skin) then you will get a different one of the descriptions shown (or all of them if you chose a language for which there isn't a description). --bjh21 (talk) 15:15, 25 January 2022 (UTC)

I suspect you may have mistaken this project for Wikipedia. While closely related, the purpose of Commons is to host media files that can be shared across multiple websites operated by the Wikimedia Foundation. It does not host text files, and it certainly is not intended to be used as a vehicle for public relations companies to engage in promotion of their clients. Question About Deletion Request

Hello -

I have posted a photo of the musician William Appling (1932-2008) performing with the Cleveland Orchestra. The photograph was taken in 1962: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:William_Appling_Performing_with_Cleveland_Orchestra_-_1962.jpg The photo was nominated for deletion on January 9 by the user EurekaLott. I replied to the deletion request here on January 15: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Deletion_requests/File:William_Appling_Performing_with_Cleveland_Orchestra_-_1962.jpg I have not received any response to my reply and would appreciate any help on this. I will do whatever is necessary to correct any problems. I believe the photo was never copyrighted and there is no record of who the photographer was. Thank you for anyone who can advise on this. Scribia4178

It looks to me like you have provided a thorough, detailed explanation of your efforts to determine the legal status of the image and I'm sure that will be considered when the discussion is closed. Unfortunately, there is a known issue here with deletion requests that involve any sort of nuanced arguments not being closed in a timey manner. Everyone here is a volunteer and nobody has to do anything they don't feel like doing, and the deletion processes experience rather large backlogs at times. (I have one on my watchlist that has been open for nearly three years. Beeblebrox (talk) 00:02, 19 January 2022 (UTC)
Thank you so much for your help. I'm relieved to hear this and I trust that the photo will not be deleted. Scribia4178 (talk) 16:49, 19 January 2022 (UTC)

Could the image on this website be used? https://www1.president.go.kr/articles/11781 Towards the bottom of the page I did see some kind of label regarding the copyright but I'm not too sure about it. WEB links
Good afternoon. How do I correctly link to an external Internet source on the page of a file uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, the license of which will allow me to use it, and upload the file to Wikimedia Commons. How, in what format, or according to what template, do I need to link to an external Internet source that provided me with a media file with a license for its unlimited use and distribution, so that Wikimedia Commons' eternal CAPTCHA does not react to it as a crime / spam, and did not block me from saving the page revision of the uploaded file. I'm generally a newbie, not in the sense of gas "newbie", but in the sense of being a registered member of Wikimedia Commons. Please explain to me the template "on the fingers"

Dealing with an image I recently uploaded using CropTool

Hi, last night I decided to try out CropTool for myself for the first time, which I used to crop a photo from a single page of File:Annales de la Société entomologique de France (IA annalesdelasoci641895soci).pdf (specifically "page" 128 in the PDF viewer, though it doesn't have a page number in-source). The result was File:Édouard Lefèvre.jpg.

Unfortunately, I am not happy at all with the quality of the result, and I later realised the page of the PDF I linked with the photo already existed as a separate image on Biodiversity Heritage Library's Flickr here, which I could have just uploaded directly in the first place. Would it be acceptable at all to delete the existing image at that file name and try uploading again using the Flickr image to get a better quality maybe? (It's public domain don't worry.) I'm sorry if that sounds weird or wrong or something, I am still very new to uploading images on Commons despite how long and often I've been on this site, and despite how many edits to pages on it I've made also. Monster Iestyn (talk) 11:44, 19 January 2022 (UTC)

@Monster Iestyn: Since you uploaded it within the last week, you can just edit the page to add "{{SD|G7}}" at the top. That marks it for deletion under criterion G7 of Commons:Criteria for speedy deletion, which is that the uploader has requested deletion of a recently-uploaded file. An alternative would be to use "upload a new version of this file" to overwrite the existing file with a new one, but that's more complicated and only really needed if the file has been here more than a week. --bjh21 (talk) 16:08, 19 January 2022 (UTC)

Using images I created from pictures taken of a mural in Mexico

I have been given 7 days to address issues related to images I used in an article about a mural in Oaxaca City, Mexico. Here is a link to the article. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oaxaca_en_la_historia_y_en_el_mito.

The good folks at Wikipedia Help Desk suggested that I should raise my question here and kindly provided me a link.

You will see on every image on the Wikipedia article I initiated, there is a 7-day deletion warning. I added some text today to explain my right to use the images. Is that sufficient?

Or have I missed the boat? Is the issue that there is something missing in my description of the images? What would that be?

The artist died a few years ago and I am in touch with his daughter. If I need to get some sort of permission from her, please tell me what it is.

@ArbyBB: Was there something you didn't understand about the reply you received from Clindberg at COM:VPC#Mexican copyright question or the information others have already posted on your user talk page. It's generally not a good idea to keep asking the same thing on different Commons pages because it tends to lead to confusion. If the artist's daughter is the legal heir to her dad's intellectual property (i.e. she's now the copyright holder of all his creative work) and she gave you verbal or written permission to upload the files and use them on Wikipedia, then Commons VRT is going to need to verify her COM:CONSENT. If you're claiming that the murals are within the public domain in Mexico per COM:FOP Mexico, then neither you nor anyone else needs the daughter's consent; however, the public domain claim is likely going to need to be assessed. You can't, however, really try to claim both which is kind of what you seem to be trying to do. It might be easier for others to help you if you can clarify which of the two claims you're trying to make. -- Marchjuly (talk) 22:40, 18 January 2022 (UTC)
Marchjuly. Thanks for your reply. Sorry. I had not seen the reply from Clindberg. It is helpful. I have subsequently replied to them. I'm going the panorama route. Seems to be the easiest. Thanks.

@Howdoesshedoit: Hi, and welcome. What can you tell us about the names and lifetimes of the photographer and author and the dates and countries of photography and publication? Also, please see en:H:PIC.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 11:38, 20 January 2022 (UTC)
On the latter, clearly January 1961 in the U.S., so the photographer & author are irrelevant. Either the copyright was renewed, and it's still copyrighted, or the copyright was not renewed, and it's not. The fact that the page contains AP stories may complicate the matter, plus we don't know what newspaper this was from.
@Howdoesshedoit: , may I assume you are asking if this can be uploaded to Commons? And, if so, would it be OK with you if we move this discussion to Commons:Village pump/Copyright where there is more likely to be someone who knows just how to work out whether this is eligible? I believe I've accurately stated the potential issues, but I don't know how to resolve them. - Jmabel ! talk 16:00, 20 January 2022 (UTC)

Bronze Star Award List

My name is Dan Lambert Davis. In 1969 I was awarded the Bronze Star while serving in the 9th Infantry. My name is not listed in this Registry. What can I do to have my name listed? Move a Creator page?

Please, could someone move Creator:John Murray to Creator:John Murray (oceanographer) per en:John Murray (oceanographer), or to Creator:John Murray (1841-1914), or to another/better name? (don't know the rules for the creator namespace, and can't move pages myself, anyway.)

Uploading of creative commons licensed media

Hello there! I am new to wikipedia and the copyright rules are not really clear to me. There's this video which I would like to include as a gif on a certain page. It is licensed as Creative Commons and can be seen here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Pi-FN2zmM0&list=TLGGcUrxqXbnV6EyMDAxMjAyMg Does anybody know if I can upload it to wikipedia? Publishing of a book cover

Hi,

I wanted to create an article about a book and therefore I intended to publish a picture of the cover of the book. I got the permission to publish it when I wrote the employee responsible regarding the press archive of the publishing company. How can I make sure the picture won't get taken down?

Thank you! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Cara 1717 (talk • contribs) 15:19, 21 January 2022‎ (UTC)

@Cara 1717: Hi, and welcome. Please have that employee send permission via VRT. Also, license restriction -nd- (no derivatives) is not usable by itself for Wikimedia Commons. For the reasons, please see Commons:Licensing/Justifications. See also COM:SIGN.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 15:27, 21 January 2022 (UTC)
@Cara 1717: If this is just for the English-language Wikipedia, it may be easier to do on a "fair use" basis and leave out Commons entirely. See en:Template:Non-free book cover. - Jmabel ! talk 16:36, 21 January 2022 (UTC)

Porygon, threshold of originality

Does this image of Porygon meet COM:TO? QuestFour (talk) 01:08, 23 January 2022 (UTC)

I would say yes. While it includes a number of basic shapes, there is sufficient complexity and choice of positioning, line angles and colour to make it a recognisable character. The creative effort involved by the original character designer is likely to be protected by copyright in many jurisdictions. From Hill To Shore (talk) 01:17, 23 January 2022 (UTC)

Start over

I made a mistake uploading an image. How do I start over? It refuses my upload becasue the picture is already there. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Roryjohnston (talk • contribs) 20:21, 21 January 2022 (UTC)

@Roryjohnston: With regards to your first photo, if the photo was published in Ireland before 1927, the year of the photographer's death is known, and the photographer died more than 70 years ago (let us say 1940), then the copyright tag you want to use on Commons is {{PD-old-auto-expired|deathyear=1940}} (see Commons:Copyright tags for other copyright tags). With regards to the second photo, don't upload to Commons, you should instead locally upload to English Wikipedia. For example, a photo published in Ireland before 1927 by a photographer who died in 1960 is not PD in Ireland, but is PD in the US. You could upload it English Wikipedia with a copyright tag of {{PD-US-expired-abroad|out_of_copyright_in=2031}} (documented on English Wikipedia at w:en:Template:PD-US-expired-abroad). —RP88 (talk) 04:29, 23 January 2022 (UTC)
I am required to provide two tags for each of these pictures, one for US and one for the country of origin. For the first, I can find no "Died more than 70 years" tag for Ireland. For the second, I tried to upload to Wikipedia but could not complete the form because there were no spaces to answer two of the questions. I hope I have made that clear.Roryjohnston (talk) 17:28, 23 January 2022 (UTC)
@Roryjohnston: The {{PD-old-auto-expired}} copyright tag covers both the country of origin and the US. If you are having trouble figuring out how to upload locally to English Wikipedia, you might try asking for assistance at the English Wikipedia help desk (it is at en:Wikipedia:Help Desk. —RP88 (talk) 02:21, 24 January 2022 (UTC)

Welsh Parliament Copyright

I think I probably know the answer to my question, but as I am no copyright expert, so I thought I would ask anyway. Can images be downloaded from https://senedd.wales/ ? The Terms of Use are at https://senedd.wales/commission/access-to-information/copyright/

Terms of Use

Any downloading, reproduction and/or use of Commission copyright protected material is subject to the material being reproduced accurately, not in a misleading context and not in a manner that may bring the Senedd and/or the Commission into disrepute. You may not use the material for satirical purposes; or advertising, promotion, commercial sponsorship, or any other form of publicity for commercial purposes or financial gain...

Please let me know. Thanks SethWhales talk 13:33, 23 January 2022 (UTC)

Those terms appear to go against the Commons policy of files being available for commercial reuse. I don't think we can host the files here until the copyright expires or the files are released under a different licence. From Hill To Shore (talk) 13:59, 23 January 2022 (UTC)

I have permission to use a photo but cannot manage to upload it. I have an email from the photographer giving me permission to use the photo in the public domain and its also on Flickr set as a public photo.

Can someone please help me?

Thanks, Brandie — Preceding unsigned comment added by Brandieport (talk • contribs)

@Brandieport: Please show us the link to Flickr, so perhaps we can verify the public domain status over there. In general though, we do not accept forwarded permissions. If a transfer from Flickr doesn't work because the licence there is unclear, the photographer would have to contact our emai team himself as explained in COM:VRT. De728631 (talk) 21:30, 23 January 2022 (UTC)
I have the link directly from the person's Flickr. https://www.flickr.com/photos/194933144@N08/
Thank you Brandieport (talk) 21:43, 23 January 2022 (UTC)
This photo at Flickr is marked as copyrighted and non-free, so we cannot use it here without a permission coming directly from the photographer. Please note also that owning a copy of a photograph does not automatically make you own its copyright. Copyright needs to be transferred in writing, so Senator Celsi may not be in a position to licence this herself. De728631 (talk) 22:20, 23 January 2022 (UTC)
Ok thanks I will ask the photog to put it on her own Flickr Thanks stay tuned 😉 Brandieport (talk) 22:23, 23 January 2022 (UTC)
Alright, but it would have to be a Creative Commons 2.0 licence then and not the "© All rights reserved". All of our uploads need to be free for anyone to reuse, including commercial use and making derivatives of the original image.

Lige lagt lidt op her i eftermiddag, 17/1-2022.

I'm just trying to post some information on the "lind & Risør" page again, and expand on a previous presentation.

Among other things, try the info box? But only eventually enough, as I'm a little untrained.

Can not remember the procedure. Whether I can just post and then get approved or what?

Just posted a bit here this afternoon, 17 / 1-2022.

@HenrikO: Hej! --MGA73 (talk) 16:29, 24 January 2022 (UTC)

The category says it is part of a uniform of an organisation active in Nazi-era Germany. It doesn't say it is Nazi imagery. If you think the current category is incorrect, I would suggest discussing the issue with Wolfmann (talk · contribs), who uploaded the file and added the category. From Hill To Shore (talk) 17:17, 23 January 2022 (UTC)
Errors and omissions in descriptions and categories are inevitable in a giant database like this. So everyone can of course correct anything. Thank you for paying attention and making wikimedia commons even better! Good luck and all the best from Wolfmann (talk) 12:08, 24 January 2022 (UTC)

Copyright help regarding File:INSACOG Logo.png

How do I add suitable license for this logo of a government agency?

--Shivck13 (talk) 04:33, 24 January 2022 (UTC)

I'm afraid there is no suitable licence for this logo because the website states "Copyright ©2019 All Right Reserved by Department of Biotechnology". This means that the content is non-free and we cannot use it here without permission from the Department of Biotechnology. The logo is also clearly creative enough to be copyrightable, so we cannot claim an exemption from copyright. De728631 (talk) 08:28, 24 January 2022 (UTC)

How to list all photographs of a specific town/region that aren't geotagged?

I tried using PetScan, to no avail. (It seems like not being in "Category:Pages with maps" correlates with not being geotagged, at least from what I've seen). I must be missing something. 70.175.192.217 06:57, 24 January 2022 (UTC)
I'm confused to what the problem is here. Maybe I'm just dumb, but if you go to Category:Indianapolis or Category:Boston, you can find photos of those cities, whether they are geotagged or not. —Justin (koavf)TCM 07:24, 24 January 2022 (UTC)
True. And that is certainly good. But it would be nice to only have the non-geotagged ones in Miami, for instance, rather than having to manually sift through all the photos and subcategories. If this is not technically feasible then I can manage with the more tedious method. 70.175.192.217 07:29, 24 January 2022 (UTC)

New information on Japanese Battleship Hyuga WWII Bombing

I have signed in and added a lengthy paragraph on the above subject. • @David Martinez, Sr.: I assume this is about File:William Marty Martinez in WWII.jpg. You say "own work". Does that mean you were the photographer? If not, what is the basis for you claiming to own copyright so you can issue a license. Also, clearly the date is wrong: this is not a photograph from 2020. What is the year of the photograph? We need to sort all of this out first to make sure commons can host the photo.
  • Once that is sorted, adding it to an article is easy. Just use [[File:William Marty Martinez in WWII.jpg|thumb|caption goes here]]. - Jmabel ! talk 21:11, 24 January 2022 (UTC)

Image for Alexander Wadsworth Longfellow Jr. Wikipedia page

Hello,

I'm updating the Wikipedia page of Alexander Wadsworth Longfellow, Jr. and I found an image of him. It's from "Men of Massachusetts; a collection of portraits of representative men in business and professional life in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts (1903)". One version of the book in a Google ebook that's free (https://books.google.com/books?id=jK0TAAAAYAAJ&printsec=frontcover&source=gbs_ge_summary_r&cad=0#v=onepage&q&f=false).

To use just the image, how should I document it? Thanks, Archivingperson (talk) 05:31, 25 January 2022 (UTC)

@Archivingperson: Hello there. I recommend using the Upload Wizard for that image. When the tool asks for copyright information, you choose "This file is not my own work". After that, please cite the book as the source ideally including the page where the image is displayed. If the book credits a photographer, you should use that name in the "Author(s)" field of the upload tool, otherwise you may use a code string {{anonymous}} there. For the licence, please use "The copyright has definitely expired in the USA" and "First published in the United States before 1927". The rest should be pretty much self-explanatory. De728631 (talk) 06:16, 25 January 2022 (UTC)

Thanks for the quick reply. Just to confirm, the template I found is this one:

Public domain
This work is in the public domain in the United States because it was published (or registered with the U.S. Copyright Office) before January 1, 1929.

Public domain works must be out of copyright in both the United States and in the source country of the work in order to be hosted on the Commons. If the work is not a U.S. work, the file must have an additional copyright tag indicating the copyright status in the source country.
Note: This tag should not be used for sound recordings.PD-1923Public domain in the United States//commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Help_desk/Archive/2022/01

Is that all I need? Archivingperson (talk) 06:38, 25 January 2022 (UTC)

@Archivingperson: {{PD-US-expired}} is preferred to {{PD-US-1923}} but, basically, yes. - Jmabel ! talk 17:27, 25 January 2022 (UTC)

Do we have a template for unidentified persons in photos?

I know that there are templates to flag unidentified species, hoping that someone can come along and be more precise, but is there a similar one for individuals? E.g. File:Curtis Rowe.jpg includes a defender who could be identified in principle, if you know the line-up of the opposing team, but I'm not finding one anywhere, after looking at Special:AllPages for templates starting with "unknown" or "unidentified". How can I upload a file that I didn't make, but the author gave permission???

Hello there! I'm trying to upload Hybrid Calisthenics' profile picture.

He gave me permission to upload.

How do I upload it? What template do I put in place for the licensing info? — Preceding unsigned comment added by QuickQuokka (talk • contribs)

@QuickQuokka: There is a system called "OTRS", which is sometimes cumbersome for proving that your content is appropriately licensed. By far the best way to ensure that it can be uploaded here is if it is also uploaded somewhere on the Web and given an appropriate license there for someone to verify it. A good place to do this upload for a picture is Flickr. —Justin (koavf)TCM 09:13, 26 January 2022 (UTC)
  • @Koavf: Actually, it is now called "VRT" (Volunteer Response Team). OTRS was a particular piece of "ticket management" software which I gather we are no longer using for this purpose, and although the link you gave is appropriately redirected, it's probably best to use the new name going forward. - Jmabel ! talk 16:14, 26 January 2022 (UTC)

If you have media about YCK, then it could be uploaded here but if you are trying to make some kind of article or social media profile for YCK, that would not fit what Commons is. —Justin (koavf)TCM 09:15, 26 January 2022 (UTC)

Incorrect caption on ARMAND DUMARESQ CAMBRONNE A WATERLOO détail1.jpg

I have little knowledge of commons and even less about handling of files. So the best I can do is report a problem. This is the only place I can find to do so.

File:ARMAND DUMARESQ CAMBRONNE A WATERLOO détail1.jpg is incorrectly captioned. In fact, it shows a British officer cropped from a much larger painting. See: https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/4/4d/%22Cambronne_à_Waterloo%22_d%27Armand_Dumaresq_%28Exposition_Universelle_de_Paris_1867%29.JPG "Cambronne à Waterloo" d'Armand Dumaresq (Exposition Universelle de Paris 1867).JPG Le plus célèbre et le plus grand tableau d'Armand Dumaresq (2,50m x 1,50 m) commandé par Napoléon III pour l'Exposition Universelle de 1867. I suspect something was lost in translation!

Since the file might be in use, the best solution might be to crop the central figure in the painting and use the same file name. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Humphrey Tribble (talk • contribs)

@Humphrey Tribble: Thank you for noticing. Moved to File:Officier britannique en peinture ARMAND DUMARESQ CAMBRONNE A WATERLOO (détail1).jpg, categories changed appropriately (though someone may be able to do better on that).

Hello, I would like to change the license on the file File:Graffiti seen in Moab, Utah Sep2021.jpg to a CC0 one. I am the original creator an uploader. Please let me know if this is possible (I've attempted it by changing the license header) and, if so, how. Thank you for your time. Ned n07b07 (talk) 19:31, 26 January 2022 (UTC)

Yes, you can do this, as the new license will be even less restrictive than the current one. Technically, you can do this by clicking on Edit on the file-page, and replace the characters behind the CC in the curly brackets by -Zero . I hope you have thought this well through, as with this license others may take your image, change it a bit and then claim full copyright over "their" derivative, so that others cannot use it freely. It's the opposite of a viral license. --Túrelio (talk) 20:18, 26 January 2022 (UTC)
Yes, you can make it more free. See also: https://wiki.creativecommons.org/wiki/Modifying_the_CC_licensesJustin (koavf)TCM 23:23, 26 January 2022 (UTC)

Renaming a Page

Hello, how do I rename a page? The spelling of an individual's name is incorrect, and this Wikipedia instruction indicates that I should click a drop-down menu that I don't have in order to move the page.

Thank you — Preceding unsigned comment added by Olaya75 (talk • contribs) 20:31, 27 January 2022‎ (UTC)

Go to the page you want to rename, press Shift-Alt-m and enter a better name. --Achim55 (talk) 20:44, 27 January 2022 (UTC)
@Olaya75: that assumes it is a page you can move yourself. If it's a file page (e.g. an image), you can only do that if you are a filemover. Otherwise, use the {{Rename}} template and someone will follow up. - Jmabel ! talk 01:17, 28 January 2022 (UTC)
Shift-Alt-m is the easiest way as it works for any user on any (not protected) page because it just starts Special:MovePage +pagename adding {{Rename}} automatically if it cannot be moved directly by oneself. --Achim55 (talk) 10:03, 28 January 2022 (UTC)

Question about similar categories for Bernard Maybeck

Hello,

1.I noticed that there are two categories that are similar, "Bernard Maybeck" and "Bernard Maybeck buildings" in Wikipedia Commons. Is there a way to link the two? It seems like the "Bernard Maybeck" category is more obvious because it is linked with the main Bernard Maybeck Wikipedia page, if I'm understanding it correctly?

2.I noticed there is another page (see external link) that sometimes is linked to Alexander Wadsworth Longfellow Jr.'s main Wikipedia page. Is there a way to remove this one, if there is nothing on it? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alexander_Wadsworth_Longfellow_Jr?fbclid=IwAR1AXzGRTCIXnGb4oLQZKvzG9sL291omN41kVNKxegoqr5S_a2D8972v3oo Thanks Archivingperson (talk) 05:54, 28 January 2022 (UTC)

  1. they're already linked.
  2. Category:Alexander Wadsworth Longfellow, Jr. has a lot of subcategories and files in it.--RZuo (talk) 10:46, 28 January 2022 (UTC)

RE: Copyright Of Images posted by Stephen Kirrage

My name is Philip Lamb and I am finishing an autobiography of my father's World War 2 Experiences during World War 2 - North Africa and Italy. My publishers 'Content Evaluator' has highlighted some Copyright Issues with some maps of the Battles for Tobruk 1941 & 1942 the owner of which is Stephen Kirrage. I would like to obtain consent/approval to use thes maps in my book and it is my intention towards the back of the book to have an Accreditation section to identify those authors and Image Providers of the work. It is not my intention to take credit for this work as the credit is theirs.

I would be most greatful if the necessry consents could be given

Kind regards,

Philip Lamb — Preceding unsigned comment added by 82.46.183.131 (talk • contribs) 12:30, 29 January 2022‎ (UTC)

You may be referring to User:Kirrages. Unfortunately, their last edit on a Wikimedia project was in February 2021. You could leave a message on their user talk page on English Wikipedia at w:User talk:Kirrages but it is impossible to say when they will next log in and see it. For normal users of images on Commons, our guideline at Commons:Reusing content outside Wikimedia is usually sufficient, however it is understandable if a publishing company wants to take an extra step in confirming the licence. All I can recommend is that you leave a message for Kirrages but also look for alternative images in case you are unable to make contact. From Hill To Shore (talk) 12:45, 29 January 2022 (UTC)

How to upload sound

XXXTENTACION songs — Preceding unsigned comment added by JNRTLN (talk • contribs) 21:20, 29 January 2022 (UTC) (UTC)

@JNRTLN: Hi,
Please sign with ~~~~.
You can only only sounds available under a free license. The composer and the musician should both provide a free license, or the composer must be old enough so that the music is in the public domain. Regards, Yann (talk) 21:20, 29 January 2022 (UTC)
All those are true, but he can upload it if the person/people who represent XXXTentacion give permission to use their music and upload it here.
Quick Quokka [talk] Quick Quokka [talk] 22:02, 29 January 2022 (UTC)
@JNRTLN: Either they need to indicate the relevant free license on their own website (in which case you can point to the URL where they do that in the "Permission" section of the "Information" template) or they can go through the process described at COM:VRT. Otherwise, we have no way to know that the permission legitimately came from the copyright holder. - 00:20, 30 January 2022 (UTC)

categories

I am uploading photographs of birds. In every case I know the species and indicate that. For example one of the photos of s species called "California Gull" is titled "California Gull 8929 (Larus californicus)" The 8929 is the image number from my camera and distinguishes this photo from other California Gull photos that I have uploaded.

The problem I encounter is that when I search in Wikimedia Commons for California Gull, in addition to my photos and to some correctly identified photos by others, I get a very large number of photos that are definitely not California Gull but some other species that happened to be photographed in California. For example "Gull portrait ca usa" is a Western Gull, and the photographer correctly identified it.

Could I create a new category and somehow "flag" the real California Gulls (mine and those by other participants)? I tried to understand some wording in Wikimedia Commons about creating a new category but got lost and could not find any link in red ink or ...

Help would be greatly appreciated, George Murre (pseudonymn) — Preceding unsigned comment added by George Murre (talk • contribs) 00:29, 29 January 2022‎ (UTC)

  • @George Murre: We already have Category:Larus californicus and its subcategories. - Jmabel ! talk 03:10, 29 January 2022 (UTC)
Thank you for replying. I will try to clarify the problem that I see occurring. When someone searches for photos of a bird it is much more likely that they will search a common name than the scientific name. When a search is made for "California Gull the results produce the mess I describe in my second paragraph above. Thus the search is essentially useless, and Wikimedia leads to confusion instead of enhanced knowledge.
Is there some way I can a) edit my existing photos in Wikimedia so that searches produce just that species (including mine), and b)write new submissions that I make so that searches find the photos and do not produce a large number of wrong identifications? I am already including the scientific name in the title but that doesn't help. George Murre (talk) 15:05, 29 January 2022 (UTC)
@George Murre: You may want use the Commons:Structured Data section to add a "depicts" statement. Structured Data can link the file to a specific species recorded on Wikidata. As Wikidata allows users to provide translations into any language, people searching for images in their own language will find searching easier. See this example edit. From Hill To Shore (talk) 16:11, 29 January 2022 (UTC)
So far I remain unable to follow your suggestions. As an experiment I uploaded a short time ago a photo of an Evening Grosbeak. It shows up in my list of uploads, as the most recent. Here is the URL https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Evening_Grosbeak_1012_Coccothraustes_vespertinus.jpg But -- when I search for Evening Grosbeak or the scientific name it does not appear, as though it has been successfully uploaded and incorporated in Wikimedia Commons but is invisible. Do you have any idea about what might be happening? I shall be very grateful for your continued help. George Murre (talk) 17:47, 29 January 2022 (UTC)
@George Murre: As a first step in linking the Structured Data, we first need to know where the species is recorded in Wikidata. I'm not an expert on birds; could you point me to the Wikipedia article that best describes this bird? From the Wikipedia article, we can retrieve the linked Wikidata and then make the same link from this file. From Hill To Shore (talk) 18:24, 29 January 2022 (UTC)
@George Murre: I think you are mixing up several different things. When you use the search you can use quotes to search for exact phrase: "California Gull". Images should be categorized in Category:Larus californicus, with latin name. This category includes "California Gull" as one of the vernacular names. There is also California Gull redirect which takes you to Larus californicus gallery page. You can always include California Gull phrase in the filename so that they will be easier to find using search. MKFI (talk) 09:18, 30 January 2022 (UTC)

@Jane023: FYI. Ellywa (talk) 12:02, 30 January 2022 (UTC)
Thanks @Ellywa: ! If the file isn't too old, renaming is appropriate, but if it's really old (like from 2006 or so) I prefer to upload a newer version, because the old attribution at time of upload is relevant and gets lost otherwise. I did check the item and the link to the Kress foundation was broken because their links are built from an artist id (not a wise decision!) so I fixed that by adding a search link for the Kress id. The old attribution is deprecated, so all is well now. Jane023 (talk) 12:49, 30 January 2022 (UTC)

Apparently, my school doesn't have any regulations on using the logo, everyone coud use it as long as the logo is not used inappropriately (defamation, false information, frauds, etc.). Adding image to article

Hi, I'd like to add an image I found on a website to an article I'm writing up (https://www.liverpool.ac.uk/~cmi/books/earlySS//portugal#1832 ) but I don't own it. Does that mean I must have made the image myself and therefore cannot upload it? Surely not every image on Wikipedia was created by the person who added it. Furthermore, this image was presumably created around 1831 and so the artist will be long gone. Am I misunderstanding the rules or is it not allowed for me to add this image? If not, how? Image taken by my institution's Media Department

I would like to upload an image taken by my institution's Media Department, and they have given me permission to upload it to Wikimedia. How should I proceed? Should I include a copy of the email giving me permission when I upload the image? — Preceding unsigned comment added by RichardKSz (talk • contribs) 22:48, 31 January 2022‎ (UTC)

@RichardKSz: Hi, and welcome. Please upload the full-size original of the file per COM:HR, including any metadata, but it may be judged too complex to be under TOO in the country of origin, so you may need to have an authorized representative license it on your institution's official website or social media or send permission via VRT. If you can't get a compliant license, the file may still be uploaded to English Wikipedia in compliance with en:WP:F because we don't allow Fair Use here. In addition, please see COM:SIGN.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 22:59, 31 January 2022 (UTC)
(cross-posted after an edit conflict here, but I think this is more thorough; also, Jeff G., I see no indication from the original poster that this is a logo or something else simple.)
@RichardKSz: Sadly, it's not so simple.
  • First, you don't say what country this is, and laws on ownership of copyrights vary a bit. If it's the U.S. the following will be precisely correct, if not it may vary (just say what country and we can probably work it out).
  • Copyright would normally reside with the photographer unless explicitly transferred. If the picture was taken by someone as part of their job, and their contract says that their work for hire belongs to the institution, then copyright belongs to the institution.
  • Only the owner of the copyright can grant a license; as indicated in the prior bullet point, that can be either the photographer or the institution. From here on, I'll assume the institution, but if it's the photographer then that is who would need to license it.
  • "Permission to upload it to Wikimedia" isn't enough. We need a specific license. I recommend {{CC-BY-SA-4.0}}, but see COM:L if you want other choices.
  • The simplest way for the institution to indicate the grant of a license would be to post the image and indicate the license on its own website, which you can then cite as a source.
  • If for some reason that can't happen, see COM:VRT for how they can send an email indicating the grant of a license. Unfortunately, we can't just have you forward an email they already sent you: too many forged emails in the past.
  • I hope that gives you what you need. By the way, please also see COM:SIGN. - Jmabel ! talk 23:09, 31 January 2022 (UTC)

Deletion Notification Bot lagging

Last month I flagged a file as lacking permission, then immediately realised my mistake and retracted both the permission template and user talk page alert. Thirteen minutes later, unbeknownst to me, Deletion Notification Bot left a message on the user's talk page telling them that I wanted to delete their file.

The timestamps play out at https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=User_talk:Mototsa&action=history and https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=File:Cortada_2021.jpg&action=history.

New record of 20 minutes at https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=User_talk:Creater_AOMG&action=history. (Context was me flagging one upload as a Spotify copyvio, and then when researching another image from the same user, finding a copy which credited the copyright to a company with the same name as them, so I withdrew the earlier flag.) --Lord Belbury (talk) 11:00, 7 February 2022 (UTC)

Somewhat relatedly, I've now seen the bot warn a user about deletions after they themselves had acknowledged and deleted the original warnings from their own talk page, which should probably be avoided. --Lord Belbury (talk) 17:22, 16 February 2022 (UTC)
