I am trying to upload pictures I took and it is refusing. There is no way to upload them to my draft straight from my phone. I've sent the images to my laptop and it still won't accept them. Help! ProfessorKaiFlai (talk) 07:45, 4 July 2021 (UTC)ProfessorKaiFlai

@ProfessorKaiFlai: see COM:FS. Also try using Special:UploadWizard, or take better (higher resolution) photos and then try again.--RZuo (talk) 08:04, 4 July 2021 (UTC)
@ProfessorKaiFlai: Hi, and welcome. I am sorry to inform you that you have triggered Special:AbuseFilter/153 by trying to cross-wiki upload smaller (<50,000 bytes or <2,000,000 pixels) jpg photos as a new user while leaving the summary intact, and Special:AbuseFilter/156 by trying to upload a smaller (<50,000 bytes) jpg photo as a new user. Each jpg photo you tried to upload is smaller, and you indicated it's your own work. Usually when someone uploads a smaller photo, it is a copyright violation taken from the web. If you took the photos yourself, please upload the full-size originals of them per COM:HR, including EXIF metadata. If you did not take the photos, please see Commons:Licensing for why we can't accept them, and have the photographer(s) license them on their official websites or social media or send the photos and permissions via OTRS with carbon copies to you. If you can't get a compliant license, the photos may still be uploaded to English Wikipedia in compliance with en:WP:F because we don't allow Fair Use here. If you change the summary or use our Upload Wizard instead, you should be able to avoid filter 153.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 00:57, 5 July 2021 (UTC)

Hi JeffG

I do attest that the photo of the physicians is my own work, and was ultimately accepted so that I can place it on my draft page.

The image that I was trying to upload of the marker is also my own work, but I downloaded it from a website that permitted its use there, since I couldn't find the original right away. Its good to know that doing so creates a problem. I will look for the original photo on my phone and try again to upload it.

Please go easy on us newbies - some of us don't understand all these technicalities. I appreciate your help in getting this straight! ProfessorKaiFlai (talk) 12:51, 5 July 2021 (UTC)ProfessorKaiFlai

I found the image in my phone and successfully uploaded it to wiki commons and to my page. Thanks for the assistance! ProfessorKaiFlai (talk) 13:09, 5 July 2021 (UTC)ProfessorKaiFlai

@ProfessorKaiFlai: You're welcome. Please stop adding "ProfessorKaiFlai" after the four tildes. Why do some of your photos have such low resolution, and none of them have camera metadata?   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 13:48, 5 July 2021 (UTC)
@Jeff G.: Because they're taken from the internet and uploaded to Commons with false dates [1]? -- Asclepias (talk) 14:08, 5 July 2021 (UTC)

Some of the photos were taken with different phones, so that might be the explanation. I imagine images have camera metadata if you are uploading the image directly from the phone. I am not able to see the 'insert' tab when trying to edit from my phone so I have been saving the images and emailing them to myself in order to add from the laptop. Some are already on my laptop from prior uses, and may not have been saved properly. — Preceding unsigned comment added by ProfessorKaiFlai (talk • contribs) 13:54, 5 July 2021 (UTC) ProfessorKaiFlai (talk) 14:00, 5 July 2021 (UTC)

@ProfessorKaiFlai: Under the circumstances, it would probably be a good idea to write a confidential email to the OTRS term (as described at COM:OTRS) using your real name (which they will keep private) and asserting clearly that this is your own work. They may have some questions for you, but the key is that once they are satisfied, they will set up a "ticket" that lets other Wikimedians contact them and they can vouch for the legitimacy of your ownership of the materials in question. - Jmabel ! talk 16:11, 5 July 2021 (UTC)

Thank you Jmabel - greatly appreciated!! I will do that - I would like to be successful in submitting my first two Wikipedia entries, and certainly not be blocked. ProfessorKaiFlai (talk) 16:20, 5 July 2021 (UTC)

Help with Wikimedia OTRS release generator step 3 (Wuselig)

I am the only child and sole heir of Leonhard Halama and Julie Halama. I am in the process of scanning old family pictures and slides and hope to upload those that are valuable and in the scope of Commons. Is it possible to obtain a general OTRS-clearance for such files for all future uploads, or is a seperate one needed for each single upload?

I upload files that merrit a personal attribution under CC-BY-SA 4.0 under the Username:Rainer Halama. I would like to attribute as author either Leonhard Halama, or Julie Halama as applicable. So in this case I would use {{Cc-by-sa-4.0-heirs |1= Leonhard Halama}}, right?

Images of reproductions of public domain works I upload under CC-0 under the Username:Wuselig. This will propably not apply to the images we are talking about in this OTRS-clearance, since my parents didn't think in these categories when taking pictures way before the advent of Wikipedia.

Best Wishes Rainer Halama - Wuselig --Wuselig (talk) 11:56, 6 July 2021 (UTC)

@Wuselig: Yes, that is possible, please ask for it when emailing via OTRS.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 12:02, 6 July 2021 (UTC)

Are Shared/Common Templates between multiple wikis possible?

Is it possible to create and maintain a single instance of a template on Wikimedia Commons, and then reference (run) that template from multiple other sister wikis without duplicating it (or import/export/copy/paste, etc.)? For instance, say I make a [[Template:CrossWikiNavigation]] (hypothetical example), that I want to provide common navigation functionality across all mediawiki properties, can I host that template in Wikimedia Commons, then call/invoke/run that template directly from another wiki/tenant using a cross-wiki call of some form? The reason I am asking is that this would allow multiple wikis to benefit from shared edits to the same template, and avoid redundancy and confusing code branching. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Mmkaram (talk • contribs) 01:13, 1 July 2021 (UTC)

Copyright help regarding File:Logo KV de Zwaluwen.png

Dear sir/madame, This is a logo we use on our website. I'm not sure under what license we could put it. Do you have any suggestions?

Thank you.

--Jorrespijker (talk) 18:08, 1 July 2021 (UTC)

@Jorrespijker:
  1. Who owns the copyright on the logo? We will need to have permission from the copyright-holder, and if that is not the artist who created the work we may need a clear, attributable assertion that the copyright was formally transferred from its artist to some other entity.
  2. The most restrictive license we allow here is {{Cc-by-sa-4.0}}.

CHAGOS ARCHIPELAGO

Hi,
why is it that your map of the Indian Ocean still features the non-existent BIOT or British Indian Ocean Territory?

Your map does not reflect the United Nations' map of the Indian Ocean!

Many thanks — Preceding unsigned comment was added by 102.160.67.51 (talk) 08:25, 2 July 2021 (UTC)

Australian Copyright on this photo?

https://img1.hscicdn.com/image/upload/f_auto/lsci/db/PICTURES/CMS/68700/68754.2.jpg

This photo was taken in Brisbane in November 1946. From this link: https://www.espncricinfo.com/story/the-bradman-wicket-that-never-was-489242

Can it be uploaded to commons? I note other photos from around that era (https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Bradman_Barnes_234.jpg) have been uploaded with a custom Australian permission template.

Thanks in Advance DiamondIIIXX (talk) 08:27, 2 July 2021 (UTC)

Photos taken before 1955 are public domain in Australia. In theory, Commons also cares about the US copyright, which pushes it back another 10 years or so (so that the copyright was already expired by the URAA date.) --ghouston (talk) 09:08, 2 July 2021 (UTC)
@Ghouston: I'm confused because it says copyright ESPNCricinfo Ltd on one of their pages.
https://www.espncricinfo.com/player/jack-ikin-15381/photos
DiamondIIIXX (talk) 09:39, 2 July 2021 (UTC)
They wouldn't have any copyright in Australia. They may have a valid copyright in other countries. I have no idea, it depends how their claim is based. --ghouston (talk) 09:57, 2 July 2021 (UTC)
For example in the UK, if the name of the photographer was known, it may still be in copyright. --ghouston (talk) 10:02, 2 July 2021 (UTC)

Uploading a file to illustrate a Wikipedia article

I am trying to upload a file to illustrate the Wikipedia article on Nicolas Théodore de Saussure. The file is the title page of his book, published in France in 1804, titled Recherches chimiques sur la Végétation. The entire book, including title page, are freely available on the Internet, including at the BiodiversityHeritage website. I have filled out the form for uploading the file to the article, but I'm not sure what to put in the Category field. Thank you for any help.

Uploading an image from a Flickr account on the list on the "Commons:Questionable Flickr images" page

I'm trying to upload this picture of Ricky Ponting (cricketer) - https://www.flickr.com/photos/publicresourceorg/26848738263/in/photolist-djSTWK-95ANo4-7tBKdf-7vzj7g-7vDfuU-CFN6HD-7vDaaQ-7vQWWA-ecv6xY-HFqMqb-54GDfA-7vKnQZ-7vLRfM-6em6Bi-4vTu1U-EPkR7G-9LhPd-6SHj2R-6SmTer-qze5BP-6GbfvU-wMWur-54GBph-deZQHd-7tBMDA-7vM18Z-GUwPcX-7vM31M-GUwN8T-GUwNup-7vQAYS-HMaoLb-HFqMHL-Hq8s4C-7vQH77-7vLGxp-6GEN4H-Hq8s8W-HFNtBb-7tybjV-93hbJb-ojPEJU-7snSZU-2ebpYEU-5HEa2Q-6SLF1X-2fJUyHV-HQvQzX-HQvQYT-8MEb4T

However, when I try to upload it, I get this error - "There was an error in your submission - Unfortunately, no images from this Flickr account can be uploaded on this site." The uploader, Public.Resource.Org, is listed on the Questionable Flickr Image list for "Images from Smithsonian Institution, some of which are copyrighted."

I don't believe this image is in violation; but their entire account is blocked. What can I do?

DiamondIIIXX (talk) 02:52, 1 July 2021 (UTC)

@DiamondIIIXX: Hi, and welcome. Sorry, but that account has been on that list for 13 years. Only Admins have the right to override it.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 14:33, 1 July 2021 (UTC)
@Jeff G.: Images on the flickr account that are from the Smithsonian Institution say to in the description. This image does not. So I don't see why I can't upload it. DiamondIIIXX (talk) 02:43, 2 July 2021 (UTC)
@DiamondIIIXX: Whoever is in charge of that Flickr account has been caught uploading copyrighted content as belonging to the Smithsonian. I find that despicable, as my tax dollars help fund the Smithsonian. This particular content, even, bears metadata which claims the photo is copyrighted by "Photo Division,Ministry of I & B,Govt.of India", and it might fit under {{GODL-India}} after having been published at http://photodivision.gov.in/writereaddata/webimages/upload/D-5588l.jpg and displayed on http://photodivision.gov.in/IntroPhotodetails.asp?thisPage=441 as found by Tineye on Mar 16, 2016; however, both those URLs are now 404-compliant. I'd like to get Jmabel's opinion on that. It is a shame that Flickr no longer displays metadata.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 07:07, 3 July 2021 (UTC)
@Jeff G.: I believe they do come from that particular Indian collection. Here's a collection on the Flickr account. https://www.flickr.com/photos/publicresourceorg/albums/72157669317457005 . I think they do fall under some sort of commercial use. DiamondIIIXX (talk) 07:50, 3 July 2021 (UTC)
I did upload the photo of Ponting yesterday - under the correct licensing information. If that info changes, then that's ok. https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Ricky_Ponting_flicks_to_leg.jpg
This image is quite important; as it's the only one I could find that fit the correct license, as well as a shot of Ponting in his Test whites, of which did not exist on Commons before. DiamondIIIXX (talk) 07:53, 3 July 2021 (UTC)
@DiamondIIIXX: That is not the correct licensing information; I have tagged it as a copyvio.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 08:14, 3 July 2021 (UTC)

Help uploading an mp3

I need help uploading an mp3 of William Jennings Bryan's famous Cross of Gold speech. This recording is, without a shadow of a doubt, in the public domain. I've requested the autopatrolled right, but I'm not sure I have the edit count for an admin to grant it to me.

This is sad because this recording is certainly within guidelines and would be beneficial to the Wikipedia page I am trying to add it to. Should I just wait for reply on my autopatrolled status, or are there other ways for me to upload this file to Commons? Thank you for your help, Tyrone Madera (talk) 18:51, 2 July 2021 (UTC)

Augmented Reality Support within Wikiversity other Wikis

Excuse me for rising this issues again, placed that on a main talk page. But I did not get any feedback and after a month the request was archived. I am rising this topic again, because it makes sense to me to perform my media contribution to Wikiversity learning resources in a way that it is sustainable and in line with Wikicommons media support for Augmented reality and marker based AR objects for learning resources.

Basic Principle - Render an Augmented Reality Scene

According to some test with 3D Modelling and geo-location based augmented reality is seems to make a lot of sense to support 3D model e.g. with Aframe and/or AR.js in Wikiversity (and may be other Wikis) in which Augmented Reality will help to understand Wikipedia articles and especially support learning resources in Wikiversity. Support may be possible just like MATH tags for mathematical expressions in articles

and a tag might be introduced with MODEL3D or AR that wraps the XML syntax for a 3D model within Wikiversity. On one hand the mathematical formula is already rendered from the LateX source exporession into an easy to read mathematical expression. On other hand 3D models in XML-Syntax just like Aframe or Ar.js can be regarded as Digital Media and will be rendered into 3D model that can be explored by the users of Wikipedia and Wikiversity to explore a 3D scene that is not accessible by a 2D images.

Storage of 3D Scenes in Wikicommons in an XML format

Augemented Reality Scenes just like Aframe or AR.js define the scene with an XML syntax within Webpages. Definitions of scenes include e.g. background image e.g. sky of the 3D as JPG or PNG with audio samples for the audio background of "singing birds" for an AR scene in a forrest. For all the other media that is needed in an webbased AR or VR format like AR.js there is already support in Wikicommons. SVG-image define the 2D image also with an XML syntax and those files are stored in wiki commons and can be embedded from Commons to any other MediaWiki i.e. Wikipedia, Wikiversity, Wikispecies, Wikivoyage, ... of WMF. So authors would include/integrate a 3D scene or a 3D model directly from WikiCommons just like audio sample, videos or images.

Reuse of 3D Models

E.g. if we define a molecule as a 3D model is may be helpful in a learning resource e.g. about Water in Wikiversity and also in a Wikipedia article about the molecular structure of an chemical element in Wikipedia. Considering multiple use of 3D models in more the one wiki resource is standard and the media e.g. the image of a bird is imported from Wiki Comnons

  • in the Wikipedia article about the bird,
  • in Wikispecies about the bird,
  • in Wikivoyage about an area where the bird can be observed,
  • in Wikiversity in a learning resource in biology, where this bird is considered.

Similar approaches are relevant for 3D scenes in AR as well.

  • heritage sites just the Forum Romanum in Rome can be recreated and explored as 3D models,
  • Molecular structure in chemistry
  • DNA and geometric structure of genetic strain

JSON Definition to Store a 3D Scene

A JSON format can be use to define primitives like boxes, spheres, pyramids, ... with coordinated where to place a 3D scene. Uploading a JSON format is not possible in WikiCommons, so this seems not to be an option.

XML-Format and Syntax of 3D Scenes

Wiki Commons stores SVG vector graphics, which is of cource XML syntax, defining the graphics. XML-3D-scene might be edited just like any Wiki source text in Wikimedia users might be able to edit the 3D scene in Wikimedia commons. Embedding of 3D models could be performed just like embedding images from Wiki Commons. The only difference is, that 3D models need an additional Opensource rending libary like AR.js and/or aframe.js so that the XML-Syntax of the 3D model will be rendered properly on a MediaWiki article. In general the 3D objects are/could be wrapped with a A-SCENE-tag. The following example is a 3D scene with just one box in a standard syntax in Aframe:

 <a-scene>
     <a-box position="-1 0.5 -3" rotation="0 45 0" color="#4CC3D9"></a-box>
 </a-scene>

Are there any recommendation how to use 3D scene in the future that might need an import of OpenSource Javascript libraries like aframe.js or ar.js. Anyway this approach would allow us as authors/teachers in Wikiversity, Wikivoyage, Wikispecies, ... to enhance resources in many ways, e.g.:

Test 3D Model in Aframe Place 3D Model on Markers
Water Molecule in Aframe - created with JSON3D4Aframe
Water Molecule with Augmented Reality AR.js on Kanji Marker - created with JSON3D4Aframe

Future of 3D Models in Wikicommons

It would great to have a few hints how 3D models VR and AR could be supported in the future, so that current development of 3D models for learning learning resources are in a format will be supported in the future. If it based on OpenSource web technology like OpenSource AR.js documentation I am fine to produce the content in the supported formats of WikiCommons. I do not know if my request makes sense to you but for me it is worth the effort to ask prior to production of 3D models in mathematics instead of converting the 3D models later in other formats because the used formats are not supported. Best regards and take care, --Bert Niehaus (talk) 08:54, 3 July 2021 (UTC)

Use of English Wikimedia file in the German article

Hi, I'd like to use a logo (uploaded in the English Wikimedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:UBS_Logo.svg) in the German article. Is this possible? Best, WROanna1862 (talk) 09:43, 2 July 2021 (UTC)

Not through Commons, but there is already a copy of this logo on the German-language Wikipedia. -- Asclepias (talk) 12:32, 2 July 2021 (UTC)
As far as I know, German Wikipedia doesn't allow non-free media. --EugeneZelenko (talk) 14:33, 2 July 2021 (UTC)
Someone who knows dewiki processes should tag de:File:UBS Logo SVG.svg for deletion as an above-TOO (based on COM:TOO Germany) corporate logo. According to google-translate, even what's there wouldn't comply with any site's likely policies: "Source unknown; Copyright or rights of use holder unknown". DMacks (talk) 17:38, 2 July 2021 (UTC)
Let the guys at "de" look into this. There are (not spoken as a lawyer, but to understand the difficulties behind the law) "easy drawings" that are free to use (at least) in Germany. The problem in this logo is the key and if this is a free painting of a key (or one that everyone would/could draw in such style, then there is a chance, this could be freely used.
In my opinion this shouldn't be used, but I'm not far away from the opinion that it could. Let the experts do theis business and not someone who "knows dewiki processes" file a DR. --Mirer (talk) 01:11, 3 July 2021 (UTC)
Note: Their is another commonswiki picture of that logo as File:UBS LG Sign.png Victor Schmidt (talk) 04:49, 4 July 2021 (UTC)

Hello, so I uploaded a bunch of files that features buildings in the United Arab Emirates to Wikimedia Commons. At that time, I didn’t know what was FoP. My files are now nominated for deletion. Is there anyway to prevent my files from getting deleted? If it was deleted, how can I use my images in Wikipedia without using Wikimedia Commons? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Lyonerov (talk • contribs) 03:50, 4 July 2021 (UTC)

  • @Lyonerov: If they are copyright violations because they are photos of copyrighted buildings in a place with no Freedom of Panorama for buildings then, no, there is no way to prevent deletion (short of getting that country to change its laws). I recommend saving copies of the photos on your own disc or other storage device.
  • It is possible (but not certain) that Wikipedia in some languages would allow some of these images on a non-free-use basis. For that you'd have to consult the policies of the individual Wikipedia, and upload appropriate images to the Wikipedia in question, not to Commons. - Jmabel ! talk 15:40, 4 July 2021 (UTC)

Unable to upload portrait of Grandfather

Hello, my name is Patrick Lon, I am the Grandson of Cambodian General Lon Non. I wanted to add a portrait to his Wikipedia, but was unable to do so due to it being filtered out as potentially "Not Suitable" for some reason. The picture in question is not copyrighted, and is only owned and possessed by my family, and I would like to add it. — Preceding unsigned comment added by LonPatrick (talk • contribs) 04:17, 4 July 2021 (UTC)

@LonPatrick: try using Special:UploadWizard, or make a better (higher resolution) scan/photo of the physical photo you own and then try again.--RZuo (talk) 08:04, 4 July 2021 (UTC)
@LonPatrick: Hi, and welcome. I am sorry to inform you that you have triggered Special:AbuseFilter/153 by trying to cross-wiki upload a smaller (<50,000 bytes or <2,000,000 pixels) jpg photo as a new user while leaving the summary intact. The photo you tried to upload is smaller, and you indicated it's your own work. Usually when someone uploads a smaller photo, it is a copyright violation taken from the web. If you took the photo yourself, please upload the full-size original of it per COM:HR, including EXIF metadata. If you did not take the photo, please see Commons:Licensing for why we can't accept it, and have the photographer post Commons:Licensing compliant permission for such work on their website or social media presence or send the photo and permission via OTRS with a carbon copy to you. If you can't get a compliant license, the photo may still be uploaded to English Wikipedia in compliance with en:WP:F because we don't allow Fair Use here. If you change the summary or use our Upload Wizard instead, you should be able to avoid that filter.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 01:16, 5 July 2021 (UTC)

What is the difference between Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 and 4.0?

What is the difference between Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 and 4.0? I haven't been able to spot the difference between the licenses. Thanks, Tyrone Madera (talk) 22:09, 3 July 2021 (UTC)

One's from 4.0, the other's from 3.0. There could in theory be no differences at all for 3.0→4.0 on a particular licence, but a decision was made to keep the numbering flat across all of them. Andy Dingley (talk) 18:08, 5 July 2021 (UTC)

How to mark the appropriated copyright to a scanned slide

Hi, I am new to Wikipedia, and need some help with an image I uploaded:

https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Abraham-Ginzburg_New.jpg

This is a digital snapshot of a slide I took from a private family Album (Prof. Ginzburg was my father-in-law). The original photographer was David Ginzburg, the son of the late Prof. Abraham Ginzburg, and he happily allowed me to use the photo from the Wikipedia page.

I got a warning g that the image maybe deleted because it contains a "derivative work"

Can anyone please help me understand the correct code I need to add to describe this copyright state?

Thanks in advance,

Addy Feuerstein — Preceding unsigned comment added by Addyfe (talk • contribs) 15:10, 4 July 2021 (UTC)

  • @Addyfe: If you say the original photographer was David Ginzburg, why did you previously claim this as your own work?
  • I presume from what you are saying that David Ginzburg is still alive, and thus owns the copyright. We need his permission (in the form of an explicitly granted license). No one but him can license his rights. While in theory there are several ways to do this, at this point this is enough of a mess that we probably need to go through the process described at COM:OTRS. - Jmabel ! talk 15:46, 4 July 2021 (UTC)

--- @‪Jmabel‬ I am sorry for the mess. As I wrote, I am new to Wikipedia and this is my first edit.

I made an additional inquiry, and I realized that this photo was actually taken by Prof Ginzburg's OTHER son, Yakov Ginzburg, that passed away recently. Again, this is an old photo, taken from a family album, so it was hard to remember who the photographer was. I believe it was taken around 1976 - 78.

I made the photos changes to my best knowledge, hope I got it right this time. I can get you in touch with Yakov Ginzburg heirs if they are the ones that should approve the photo copyrights issues.

Loading a picture on my Wikipedia site from Wkimedia commons

I need help uploading a picture to Wikipedia from Wikimedia commons. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jjcgrey (talk • contribs) 23:10, 5 July 2021 (UTC)

  • @Jjcgrey: There should never (or almost never) be a reason to upload an image that is already on Commons to any particular-language Wikipedia. What exactly is it that you want to accomplish? - Jmabel ! talk 02:31, 6 July 2021 (UTC)
    • I think this is the problem. Jjcgrey, first of all you would have to replace the string Example.jpg with the actual file name of the image you would like to display in the article. However, galleries don't go on top of a Wikipedia page and are not used for single images either. To include a specific image, you just add a string of code like [[File:Charles Grey3.JPG|thumb|1916-17 Mexican Border War, Grey reporting for The Chicago Evening Post"]] (note: that particular image is already shown in the article), where you replace File:Charles Grey3.JPG with the file name of the image you would like to display and replace the string "1916-17 Mexican Border War, Grey reporting..." with a description of your desired image. Photos of presidents

I want to upload a normal photo of the face of an old president of my country, Uruguay. Its in b/w.... is there a problem with this? Last deletion of same photo says this: "In the source says "utilizado por varios", meaning "used by many". Thats not a so..."... and the rest idk how to read or access even. its in the history of the page of the ex-president (which is andres martinez trueba).

thanx in advance. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Joaquin89uy (talk • contribs) 06:35, 5 July 2021 (UTC)

  • @Joaquin89uy: You don't provide a link, which makes this hard to answer. If the image is in the public domain, then it's fine here. If not, then it's not. If it was literally the same photo, though, and it was deleted as you describe, I assume some uploader was saying, "This image has to be fine because many people use it." That, of course, has no bearing on the legal status of the image, and someone appears to have been telling them that. - Jmabel ! talk 17:42, 5 July 2021 (UTC)

Idk if this will do, this is the page in spanish of the president im talking about. if you go to "ver historial" ("see history"), and then to the date "27 aug 2013", near the bottom, then you'll find the copyright violation, but the sentence is incomplete, just as I cited above. The file itself is called "Andrés_Martínez_Trueba.jpg", but i'm so new I literally don't know exactly how to get to it. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Joaquin89uy (talk • contribs) 12:36, 6 July 2021 (UTC)

@Joaquin89uy: That was File:Andrés Martínez Trueba.jpg, see the complete deletion log entry.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 14:35, 6 July 2021 (UTC)
@Jeff G.: Thank you.. thats interesting tho. Guess I have to find and cite the correct source, and then it'd be okay ?

Its still a bit weird since its a photo that its maybe more than 60 years old though. Furthermore its of a president. Idk.

@Joaquin89uy: There are photos here on Commons that I personally took that are almost 60 years old (55, to be exact). They are certainly still in copyright, and unless the law changes they will still be copyrighted for 70 years after my eventual death. - Jmabel ! talk 16:01, 6 July 2021 (UTC)
@Jeff G.: Good point. Still, its a photo of a president, .. and not any photo but like, "the" photo. Shouldn't there be like an agreement of those official photos being public domain or something? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Joaquin89uy (talk • contribs) 21:21, 6 July 2021 (UTC)
It always depends on the jurisdiction in the country of origin. In Uruguay, the copyright term for all works is the life of the author plus 50 years, or 50 years after the creation of any anonymous work. Unlike the United States, for example, Uruguay also does not have a rule that works created by the government are not copyrighted. So we need to know if the photographer can be identified. If not, I think the image is out of copyright as an anonymous work that is older than 50 years ({{PD-Uruguay-anon}}). De728631 (talk) 21:31, 6 July 2021 (UTC)

Can I use the photo?

On July 2nd 2021 I uploaded a photo with the UploadWizard from Flickr. Even though the photo is CC licensed, User:L736E has censored it. I have provided clarification on my discussion page. I read here that on July 2 the photo was reviewed by User:FlickreviewR 2, which confirmed the presence of the CC license here. Can I therefore insert this pic in the infobox of the Wikipedia page for which I uploaded it? Thank you!--Max Peltuinum (talk) 16:14, 5 July 2021 (UTC)

  • @Max Peltuinum: The question would be why we should believe that the Flickr uploader owns the copyright of the photo and therefore may license it. That Flickr page appears to belong to the subject of the photo, who is not likely to be the photographer, who would typically own the copyright. - Jmabel ! talk 17:46, 5 July 2021 (UTC)
  • I turned the {{Copyvio}} into an ordinary deletion discussion and notified the person who put the template on the photo. I don't think the issue is at all clearcut. Please discuss at Commons:Deletion requests/File:1587839625963 IMG 0442.jpg. If you want you can copy the remarks you made on your talk page and/or here, because that deletion request is the discussion that counts. In any case, this is not a matter of "censorship": it is a matter of sorting out whether the correct rights have been granted for Commons to be allowed to use the image. - Jmabel ! talk 17:57, 5 July 2021 (UTC)

@Jmabel: Thank you! I understand the problem. As you suggested, I will move the observation to the discussion page, not for the photo itself, but above all because I have a doubt left (I'm not ironic or controversial): if a famous person publishes a photo on Flickr that portrays him, unless it is a selfie, it is evident that it was taken by any photographer (perhaps even a friend or relative). I think this is a normal case, so the bot that captures the image should check if the CC license was granted by the author of the photo, not by the person who uploaded it to Flickr. Since I believe that this is not technically possible, indeed, I believe it is absolutely wrong, Wikimedia should eliminate the possibility of uploading photos of characters from Flickr. In any case, I thank you infinitely for your cooperation. I hope I get the remark moving on the talk page well and I would be very happy if you would continue to help me.--Max Peltuinum (talk) 18:36, 5 July 2021 (UTC) @Jmabel: Forgive my English: "copy", not "move".--Max Peltuinum (talk) 18:47, 5 July 2021 (UTC)

  • @Max Peltuinum: The bot can determine only what the person on Flickr claims for a license; it can't judge the likelihood that they are valid in making that claim. That is left for the human who requests the bot to upload, and for other Wikimedia Commoners later. If we find that a particular account hosts a lot of images with invalid licenses, we can block the account from being bot-uploaded, but (to paraphrase George Washington) we don't generally roam Flickr in search of monsters to destroy, we wait until there has been a problem or two from a particular Flickr account. - Jmabel ! talk 02:29, 6 July 2021 (UTC)

@Jmabel: Yes, I assumed it. The point, however, is this: in this specific case, I am neither the photographer nor the photographed subject, but I personally know Gianfranco Continenza and I am sure that the website, the Flickr profile and even the photo belongs to him, even if I do not know how to certify it. As a Wikimedia user (as well as any user, I believe) I can only rely on the results of Flickr (CC license) and the verification performed by the bot. The only alternative for me would be to upload a photo I took, but if so, I wonder, how could I attest to the right to post a person's image? How can I certify that Gianfranco Continenza has authorized me to publish his image? I didn't upload a photo I took because I thought that uploading from Flickr was more "guaranteed", not more "controversial". In the present case, there appears to be no press agency and no photographer who, having acquired the rights to the image from the person photographed, can claim them. The photo is also published on Gianfranco Continenza's website (as well as on his Flickr profile), but it is the site that is protected by copyright, not the photo. In fact, Gliangranco Continenza has published this photo on Flickr under the CC license. Honestly, I don't see why this photo needs to be deleted from Wikimedia. I presume that there are thousands of photos acquired with the exact same modalities and that, potentially, present the same paradoxical problem. Let's be clear, I'm not raising a controversy, I'm just trying to figure out how to publish a photo that is not a selfie of the character. In all other cases, in fact, a doubt could be raised about the ownership of the rights: the ownership of the image would belong to the photographer (even if he is a simple friend of the character, not an agency or a professional), but in reality any photographer must be authorized by the character to publish the image. In short, as it is posed, the question always seems to be unsolvable. I don't know if I managed to be clear with my bad English. In any case, thanks for the help!--Max Peltuinum (talk) 10:47, 6 July 2021 (UTC)

  • Again, this is what COM:OTRS is largely about. And I have approximately zero doubt that the page belongs to Gianfranco Continenza, so there is approximatly zero doubt that he has agreed to publish. The question is whether Gianfranco Continenza actually owns the copyright of this photo of him. It doesn't look self-shot with a timer, though it could be. The OTRS team needs to hear directly from him if he is asserting that a license was transferred, or from the photographer if it has not.
  • As for "thousands of photos acquired with the exact same modalities," assuming we mean undeleted photos, probably not, though I'm sure that out of 70 million there are tens, possibly even a few hundred at any given moment, most of which will be rather short-lived.
  • And again: the bot solves a technical problem, but Flickr makes approximately zero effort to sort out copyright issues. I will confess that when I personally have photos to post that raise issues of [lack of] freedom of panorama, I put them on Flickr instead of Commons. Commons is singularly tight about copyright, because much of our purpose is to allow reuse. - Jmabel ! talk 16:16, 6 July 2021 (UTC)

@Jmabel: Perfect! So I hope COM:OTRS gets to work soon! Thanks again.--Max Peltuinum (talk) 16:50, 6 July 2021 (UTC)

How do I get to know about the license of an image from a website?

I want to use this image in an article but I don't know if it has the Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 International license. Can I get help? Excellenc1 (talk) 06:18, 7 July 2021 (UTC)

The general terms of use are here. Ruslik (talk) 06:29, 7 July 2021 (UTC)
@Excellenc1: The link to the .jpg does not help much. Instead, please link to the webpage that uses the image with the context. -- Asclepias (talk) 14:46, 7 July 2021 (UTC)

@Asclepias: The image is taken from the official website of the French Ministry of Culture (link here). I want to use the image here. Excellenc1 (talk) 15:15, 7 July 2021 (UTC)

@Excellenc1: In the absence of an indication to the contrary on the context page, it seems reasonable to think that the image is the property of the department and that the general conditions apply to it: «les images et hyperimages qui sont la propriété exclusive du ministère de la Culture sont mises à disposition selon les termes de la licence CC-BY-SA 3.0 FR». The corresponding template on Commons is Template:Cc-by-sa-3.0-fr and the category is Category:Images from Ministry of Culture of France. -- Asclepias (talk) 16:58, 7 July 2021 (UTC)

@Asclepias: So when I am supposed to add the license of the image while uploading, am I supposed to click at Creative Commons ShareAlike Attribution 3.0 or is there some other way (talking about the Release Rights tab in the Upload Wizard)? Excellenc1 (talk) 17:12, 7 July 2021 (UTC)

I guess from your question that you are saying that the Upload Wizard tool does not have an option for Cc-by-sa-3.0-fr. I think it has some generic option that allows to specify another template that is not in its lists. Or you can use the basic upload form and not be limited by the Upload Wizard tool. As long as you end up using the correct template Cc-by-sa-3.0-fr in the description page, it is not really important what path you use to get there. -- Asclepias (talk) 17:34, 7 July 2021 (UTC)

Relicensing a picture

Hello helpdesk. I just saw that an image I uploaded got a strike and was proposed for speedy deletion: "The file is subject to speedy deletion unless it is relicensed according to the Commons licensing policy. This file is a copyright violation for the following reason: Copyvio from https://www.leap-in-time.com/lab/ , no CC licensing on website".

This is our website and we also have the rights to the image. I uploaded the image through the editor. The file says the following about the license: "This file is licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike 4.0 International license." How can/must I relicense the image afterwards so that it is not deleted? Thank you very much for your help! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Leap in time (talk • contribs) 14:25, 13 July 2021 (UTC)

@Leap in time: Hello, If you are the owner of the copyright, you can do one of two things (or both):
  • On your official website, indicate clearly the free license near this photo. (However, given the way the webpage is formatted, that would likely cause confusion with the other photo located in the same space. So, that may not be a practical option if you do not want to place both photos under the same license.)
  • From your official email address, send an email to Wikimedia to confirm your ownership of the copyright and your free license. See the page Commons:OTRS for details.
-- Asclepias (talk) 15:15, 13 July 2021 (UTC)
  • @Leap in time and Asclepias: Alternative: you can create a separate page on leap-in-time.com with just this image and an indication of the license, and add a link to that from the "permission" field of the {{Information}} template. That would fully address the permission issue, and you could then remove the warning tag. - Jmabel ! talk 19:27, 13 July 2021 (UTC)
  • @Asclepias and Jmabel: Thank you very much for your responses. I was able to relicense the picture contacting the OTRS. A final question: Will the question be deleted now that it is answered? Or am I free to delete the given links? -- Leap in time | talk 17:30, 14 July 2021 (CEST)

Excel

Recently, I came across some data-tables held on commons:

and I used them to make a graph.

As part of this I contacted the original author, who kindly agreed to give me some extra data to improve the graph. Having now done that, I would also like to add the additional raw data to commons, preferable in a way that matches the original data-tables. I have to say that I was surprised when I first encountered the data, as I didn't know you could upload non-media files. I've looked for some instructions on how to do this (preferred file types, etc) but without any luck. I'm guessing it has to be some sort of space or comma separated filetype. Can anyone advise? --Project Osprey (talk) 15:40, 6 July 2021 (UTC)

@Project Osprey: Hello. Please have a look at mw:Help:Tabular Data. While Excel and CSV are not supported, you may create data tables with JSON. You might also want to compare the source code of the *.tab files you mentioned. De728631 (talk) 20:46, 6 July 2021 (UTC)
Goodness, that certainly looks more complex that just uploading a file... I'll have a play, but I may have more questions later. Thanks for getting back to me. --Project Osprey (talk) 21:10, 6 July 2021 (UTC)
You're welcome. I agree that coding a large amount of data into a structure like this is complex and surely tiresome. However, I can see where this approach is coming from. Excel is a proprietary and patented file format and CSV can be formatted in all possible manners you may think of. So, while the former is not a free file format as required for Commons, the latter is consistent for easy use throughout the Wikimedia family of projects. JSON-based files, however, are clearly defined and machine-readable. Anyhow, I've never worked with those tab files before wither, but I suppose there are converters available online that will fill your comma-separated data into a generic JSON structure.

I wish to insert a photograph from google into a Wikipedia article.

I understand that there is not a copyright issue associated with this photograph, as other photos in the same google location have already been inserted in the article. I wish to add another photo from the same source. I don't know how to proceed. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Brentclift (talk • contribs) 10:44, 8 July 2021 (UTC)

  • @Brentclift: There is almost no such thing as "a photograph from Google," and if it is really that then it is probably copyrighted. If you just mean that you used Google to find it, that is a different story, but says nothing about the copyright status of the photo. Could you please be more specific about what you want to upload (a URL showing where you found it is probably the best way to be specific). - Jmabel ! talk 14:06, 8 July 2021 (UTC)

Photo and right

Hello, for weeks I have not been able to add a photo to a Wikipedia page that I created under the name of FATMA REKIK.

The photos that I add are my own photography works and I have the full right to use them, however each time I add a photo, it is deleted within hours.

Hi, and welcome. Please read COM:NETCOPYRIGHT and COM:L carefully for why we can't accept those photos as-is, and have the photographers post Commons:Licensing compliant permission for each such work on their websites or social media presences or send the photos and permissions via OTRS with carbon copies to you. How to add a license tag?

In a basic upload, how to add the license tag? In my case, the license is CC BY-ND 3.0 NZ, here is the source and the image. Excellenc1 (talk) 14:38, 9 July 2021 (UTC)

  • @Excellenc1: You can either put in in the "permissions" field or at the bottom (outside the Information template). In any case, it's just a wikitext template, and you can correct it immediately after uploading if that's easier. - Jmabel ! talk 15:49, 9 July 2021 (UTC)
@Excellenc1: Hi, and welcome. License restrictions -nc- (noncommercial) and -nd- (no derivatives) are not usable by themselves for Wikimedia Commons. For the reasons, please see Commons:Licensing/Justifications.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 16:18, 9 July 2021 (UTC)
Firstly, make sure that the content you want to reuse is licensed under a free license or is in the public domain. If it is free, find the corresponding tag on Commons and simply copy the name of the tag, between double curly brackets, in the edit box of the upload form. If the content is not free, it cannot be uploaded to Commons. Non-free licenses, such as for example BY-ND, do not have license tags on Commons. If a content is free enough for Commons and is also under a non-free license (an unusual situation, but it can happen for some reasons), use the corresponding free tag and just mention at length the additional non-free license. (There are ways to insert that mention in templates, but that's a bit complex and it's not necessary to go into this level of complexity here, unless you actually have such a rare situation, which is probably not the case). -- Asclepias (talk) 16:27, 9 July 2021 (UTC)
Apologies, I didn't notice this was about a non-conformin license and I just saw it as a technical question about adding a license tag. - Jmabel ! talk 23:56, 9 July 2021 (UTC)

License for derivative work

I modified some figures existing in Commons, and uploaded them as new files. The originals were licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike 3.0 Unported license. As I used the template to upload my files, they too were tagged with the same license as the source. Whereas I understand that Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike 4.0 International license is compatible with 3.0, I upped the license version of my uploads to 4.0. I want to know if this is proper, and followed the right process. Jay (talk) 16:25, 9 July 2021 (UTC)

Uploading a File

I would like to upload a file which was created by a the user maricha_caceres on fiverr, a freelancing service. This file was a commission, so I paid the author to create the file based on my criteria, and they designed this file. I am unsure which copyright tag would apply to this, as well as what option to select as my right to publish the work. — Preceding unsigned comment added by MWhitt04 (talk • contribs) 22:58, 9 July 2021 (UTC)

  • @MWhitt04: Have they signed over the copyright to you? If so, you can send proof of that as explained in COM:OTRS. If not, then they still own the copyright; you should get them to sign it over. Then you can send proof to the OTRS team & upload it. - Jmabel ! talk 00:00, 10 July 2021 (UTC)

Editing Image Categories.

Hello and Good Day,
I noticed a change in wikicommons if I access it via mobile. Earlier if I needed to edit the category of an image, by clicking the category option, a new page would open and I could type the category in the box at the top which would then provide relevant categories via a drop down box pertaining to the entered words in the box at the top. Now when I click category, this new page doesn't open, instead I have to type out the category on the same page, without any drop down box or hints.. this has become problematic for me. Is there a way to bring the old category editing mode back?
Maybe it was some change I did to Special:Preference?

Please advice. STC1 (talk) 03:13, 10 July 2021 (UTC)

you're using com:hotcat. "the old category editing mode" is when the cat you type exists. nothing is shown to you when it doesnt exist, e.g. Category:Historical monuments in India Category:Cultural heritage monuments in india. the correct name is Category:Monuments and memorials in India.--RZuo (talk) 09:26, 10 July 2021 (UTC)
@RZuo: no no, I'm not talking about what you mentioned. As I originally written, earlier (april-may2021) when I tried to edit the category - on mobile- a new page opened. On that new page there was a blank box at the top with a blue coloured box at top right corner called "publish".

So I would type a few words of the category in the blank box and hotcat would present me all categories matching what I had entered. Then I would select the category I want and press the blue button. It was simple.

but now when I click on categories, there is no new page which opens (in mobile) I have to edit the category on the same page (SIMILAR to how one would do on a Desktop). Problem is: the category suggestions overlap the text underneath making it difficult to read, also clicking on a category is difficult because the underlying text is also clickable and a lot of mistakes happen.

I just want to get the old way back. 🥺 --STC1 (talk) 13:39, 10 July 2021 (UTC)

Problem with picture than spans two pages

I started out trying to improve John Brown's execution.jpg. I'd link to it here but don't know how, if I try I get the image.

I found the original of the drawing, however it is on two facing pages, and two separate scans (at http://accessible.com, subscription required). You'll see the mess I made, that I don't know how to fix.

1. One option would be to use an image editor to combine the two images (and crop them). I'm not really happy with this, but I could do it.

2. Another option is to upload two separate images and just treat it as two different pictures. But one I can't because now it's become John Brown's execution.jpg

I'm enbarassed, but I need someone to help fix the mess I made. Sorry. Deisenbe (talk) 21:21, 10 July 2021 (UTC)

IMHO, having the full image on a single file would be ideal, if it's not too much trouble. Having two separate new files is acceptable also, considering that you already have a small version of the full image in File:John Brown's execution.jpg, which can be reverted to its previous version. -- Asclepias (talk) 23:00, 10 July 2021 (UTC)

Need help to blurry or remove a copyrighted part of an image

For my File:Facebook censored post.png, the image in the center is both not needed and possibly copyrighted. Can anyone help me blurry it, or cut it out? The text on top is mine so obviously, I can release it to PD, the text on the bottom is not copyrightable (too short/not original), but the fetched preview image is probably copyrighted and must go. Fortunately it is not relevant to the main purpose of this image. --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus Talk 03:02, 11 July 2021 (UTC)

maybe that text is the trigger for fb censorship.--RZuo (talk) 12:39, 11 July 2021 (UTC)
@Jmabel and RZuo: As RZuo notes, the text (or to be precise, the links) are what triggers Facebook censorship. Anyway, what may not be 'free' is the image in the center (laptop on the table), which is just some stupid fetched thumb we can blurry or whatever with no information loss. --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus Talk 15:56, 11 July 2021 (UTC)

Image size is shown as 0x0 pixels (image itself looks okay)

I have encountered a problem that I have not seen before. Uploading a new version of an existing file File:Revierderby.png, the dimensions are shown as "0 × 0 (261 KB)". While the file is displayed correctly in the preview at the top of the Wiki Commons page and on [2], the file does not display correctly on the Wikipedia pages that use it. I tried to correct the problem by saving the file in a different program and uploading again, but the error persisted. I have also tried to undo my edit, but it says my edit had already been undone. • There is a claim of public domain, but no reason to believe that this image that is obviously a recent photograph would be in the public domain. It is possible that someone meant to use CC-0 or some other similar dedication to the public domain or equivalent, but a simple assertion that it is in the public domain is worth nothing. Also, the image appears to be on the site of the subject of the photo, but it is the copyright-holder -- presumably the photographer -- from whom we need a license. If there has been a transfer of copyright, we'd need to go through the process described at COM:OTRS (or COM:OTRS/de) to have evidence of that. - Jmabel ! talk 15:47, 12 July 2021 (UTC)

  • @Dibako: If we are talking about recent uploads (within the last week) just tag them with {{subst:My bad upload}} and they will presumably be deleted as a courtesy, unless they are in use. Otherwise, though, you are effectively asking "How do I revoke an irrevocable license"? And the answer is, "You can't. That's what it means for a license to be irrevocable." - Jmabel ! talk 02:00, 13 July 2021 (UTC)
If an image has a problem, such as no permission from the author etc., you can insert, in the page of the image, the template Speedydelete and specify the problem in the parameter. For images that other users already tagged with possible deletion tags, they will normally be deleted within seven days if the problem is not fixed. You can wait for it to happen or you can insert the speedydelete tag to clarify and possibly make it happen more rapidly. --

-- Asclepias (talk) 23:08, 13 July 2021 (UTC)

Patterns for disambiguation in case of a dominant subject

Suppose I want to set up a disambiguation category page for a lemma already having that lemma as category name and which should remain the dominant subject. Not having found the answers anywhere, I would like to ask the following questions: (suppose X to be the lemma)

  • How should the dismabiguation category be named? X (disambiguation)?
  • How/by what template should the dominant subject category refer to the disambiguation page and where on the page?

An example from which to infer the answers will be sufficient. --Silvicola (talk) 15:26, 9 July 2021 (UTC)

  • @Silvicola: Not at all sure what you mean by "lemma"; the only meaning I know for that is something that follows trivially from a theorem. Can you give an example of what you want to do? - Jmabel ! talk 23:57, 9 July 2021 (UTC)
    • @Jmabel: By “Lemma” I used probably a false friend; so nothing here about “Fatou's lemma” and such things …
    • I saw many other similar examples with more than just two minor homonymous subjects still missing a category disambiguation, but let me take this one at hand:
    • There is a city named Kronach with Category:Kronach (w:de:Kronach), but there is also a river Kronach (w:de:Kronach (Haßlach)) having its mound in the city which should get Category:Kronach (Haßlach). (This one is still not created, perhaps due to the same ignorance I have, but it should be created, as there are images. The uploader used Category:Kronach in Kronach for them, but the river begins its course outside the city's borders and the two upper courses, which unite outside the city borders, are also currently misplaced under Category:Kronach in Kronach.)
    • The city is probably much more important, but both subjects and another Category:Kronach (Weißer Main) (river w:de:Kronach (Weißer Main), still without photos) should also be put into a common category disambiguation. Now the questions:
      • What should be the name of the category disambiguation according to the pertaining convention for this situation? Category:Kronach (disambiguation) or something other?
      • This category disambiguation, I suppose, should be referred to on Category:Kronach, how (with a template?) and where (top of page?) should it be placed on that category page?
    • We would perhaps have already photos for the other river Kronach too, if only uploaders would know where to put them; the conscientious ones will restrain from uploading to the wrong category so that they don't mix the subjects. More hospitality for the uploaders ignorant of the conventions here! --Silvicola (talk) 01:14, 10 July 2021 (UTC)
More generally, parentheses are acceptable, but only when there is ambiguity after proper naming. Also, some countries have a different convention for names of populated places, using a comma between place name and state/province/etc. E.g. Category:Vancouver, Washington, Category:Surrey, British Columbia. This also makes it easy to disambiguate place name vs. the thing the place is named after, e.g. Category:Seward Park for the park itself, Category:Seward Park, Seattle, Washington for the neighorhood. - Jmabel ! talk 15:42, 10 July 2021 (UTC)
@Jmabel: There are at least two rivers named Kronach and there is a city named so and a part of another city. Having seen many geographical Commons-categories, I found that there is no consistent naming scheme for waterbodies in the geographical regions where German is spoken. Let the main river be properly named YYYY and the tributary XXXX, then one encounters category names like XXXX, XXXX river, XXXX (river), XXXX (River), XXXX (YYYY) and much more.
This all is a mess, in my opinion in large part due to the demand at category creators to translate (according to rules difficult to find or to comprehend or to practize) into English (disambiguated) name forms and their incapacity to do so consistently. English, to any reasonable extent, isn't an universal language. To clean that up would be to invest all time into formal renaming and relinking work, while not even being secure from fierce objections of the original category creators. For my part, I don't want to do that. I'm pretty sure that even trying to change the city cat Category:Kronach to something like Category:Kronach City would waken hostility. And if one could prevail doing that, one could be rather sure to see growing up at some other places names like Category:XXXX Village, Category:XXXX village, Category:XXXX (village) and many more forms. Not daring to change whatsoever at Category:Kronach, what is for me the viable compromise for setting up the category disambiguation and the redirection to it? – By the way, I like consistency much more than others, but I don't want to cross the Sahara desert. --Silvicola (talk) 18:57, 10 July 2021 (UTC)
(i'm a non native speaker.)
XXXX (River) is definitely wrong. XXXX river is also wrong, since if river is added to the name, the as part of a proper noun it should be capitalised.
personally i think they should be disambiguated primarily by the country-level or province-level administrative division they are located in. only if that's not possible, like two Bear River in california, use the "XXXX (YYYY tributary)" format.
for this specific case, there're five things named Kronach. usually when there're so many homographs, it would be disambiguated at the word itself, i.e. Category:Kronach, but Kronach is a city with 16k people whereas other stuff are a village and two short, less notable rivers, the city is quite clearly the primary topic, that would receive most files tagged as such, like Category:London.
i suggest:
Category:Kronach for the city
Category:Landkreis Kronach for the Landkreis
Category:Kronach (Fürth) for the village
Category:Kronach (Haßlach tributary) for de:Kronach (Haßlach)
Category:Kronach (Weißer Main tributary) for de:Kronach (Weißer Main)
and a page "cat:Kronach (disambiguation)" is generally not needed. commons dont need such "xxx (dab)" pages usually.--RZuo (talk) 12:39, 11 July 2021 (UTC)
Thank you for your answer which, not being an native English speaker either, I think I have understood well.
Concerning your river category suggestion Category:Kronach (Haßlach tributary), I think I won't follow it, because I never ever encountered this pattern with rivers in the region I work on. Adding that pattern to the already existing plurality of river cat disambiguation patterns in this region would only augment this plurality. So we would have still more category name anomy. A really sweeping preliminary clean up of the existing disambiguated river categories would be necessary for things not to become still more irregular as presently. I don't want to shoulder the Herculean task of establishing this suggested pattern by tons and tons of renamings which would be certainly necessary to operate a mimetic shift by subsequent category creators.
So no disambiguation is needed. Be it so.
Thank you. --Silvicola (talk) 19:48, 12 July 2021 (UTC)

Copyright help regarding File:David Carradine young.jpg

Greetings. I am trying to provide a copyright tag as required, for an old/undated photo that has no copyright whatsoever and circulates on social media. The sources are multiple: Pinterest, Facebook, Quora; I simply selected a version with good resolution. Apparently, the best way to describe this file's copyright situation would be the tag "ineligible" due to its triviality, just a studio portrait with no signature or known origin, and whose importance is showing the actor at a young age, not in character.

Problem is, how do I do this *exactly*? I have found these things:

Template:PD:ineligible

which would be the best option, I guess, among the literally thousands of options. But, how do I insert any of these codes in the file's description *exactly* to resolve the issue? Where? Am I supposed to substitute what with what? I guess that for professional coders this is trivial, but for regular people like me, it's exasperatingly confuse. The instructions to do this correction aren't clear, or rather, they don't exist. Neither to add the tags in the uploading process; that's how we arrived here.

Thanks. --Maykiwi (talk) 22:24, 13 July 2021 (UTC)

"Ineligible" is generally for things like simple geometric shapes. {{PD-US-no notice}} *might* apply to this photo, but to prove it you'd need better sourcing than finding a copy of it on some site on the internet. For example an original 1960s US publication without a copyright notice would do it. The internet source page doesn't provide enough context to be sure one way or another - unless more info about the photo can be found, sorry, not good enough to be stated to be free licensed on Wikimedia Commons. -- Infrogmation of New Orleans (talk) 23:33, 13 July 2021 (UTC)
@Andy Dingley: @Infrogmation: Greetings. It is not "clearly" under copyright, since there is no source whatsoever that explains the date of the photo, or where was it first published. If it was published at all; it looks like a portfolio photo. Being from around 1960 doesn't mean is necessarily under copyright and forbidden to upload, as there are materials from that period in Commons. Requesting to find a 1960s US publication that happens to contain this picture is an interesting petition (real-life librarian here, currently in Argentina), since there is no clue anywhere of this picture's origin or date; I dated it circa 1960 only because of how young the subject looks. It might be from 1950, given the hairdo. Which tag represents the situation of a picture circulating publicly *without any copyright marking nor restrictions*? (And how it is added *exactly*?) There are plenty of pictures in Commons, especially public figures' pictures that have no known copyright either, and have been accepted. Maykiwi (talk) 21:57, 14 July 2021 (UTC)
@Maykiwi: Please see Commons:Project scope/Precautionary principle. Commons does not accept images on a basis of "it might be OK" or "it's probably OK". If the claim is that it is public domain, we need a basis to determine that with near-certainty. - Jmabel ! talk 00:33, 15 July 2021 (UTC)

Outdated category?

There is a category Category:Kesko headquarters on Commons. It mentions the Kesko headquarters building in Katajanokka as an important landmark in Helsinki.

There's just one little problem. The building no longer serves as the Kesko headquarters. Kesko's current headquarters are in Kalasatama. The building in Katajanokka will probably be renovated into a residential building.

What should be done about the category? JIP (talk) 00:42, 14 July 2021 (UTC)

If the building is notable, rename the category, perhaps something like "Former Kesko headquarters", or specific address if that would seem better. -- Infrogmation of New Orleans (talk) 00:56, 14 July 2021 (UTC)
@JIP and Infrogmation: "Kesko headquarters" followed by a parenthetical date of construction is probably better than just "former": eventually there can be more than one "former". - Jmabel ! talk 00:40, 15 July 2021 (UTC)
I renamed the category to Category:Kesko headquarters (1940). Someone else already created a category for the current headquarters, Category:K-Kampus. The current headquarters actually has a name all to its own, "K-Kampus". The former headquarters (built in 1940) were simply known as the headquarters of Kesko, the building itself did not have a name. JIP (talk) 02:17, 15 July 2021 (UTC)

Images

Hi, In short I have hundreds of files of the countryside but some of them are the same thing again and again but the only difference are the weather conditions (some were taken in spring, summer, autum and winter)

So my question is do I upload them all and if so once uploaded should I then only upload say 1 album per year as I assume I would have like 7-20 "Ranscombe Farm walks" per year otherwise,

Obviously I want to share all but I wasn't sure if it was really worth photographing and then uploading the same thing every single month .... I assume uploading say 1 or 2 albums a year would be better?

I've inlcuded a PDF file to sort of show the files in question,

Thanks, –Davey2010Talk 21:42, 17 July 2021 (UTC)

Also uploaded to Dropbox just in case you can't see them properly > https://www.dropbox.com/sh/ah7qg7rir0609ao/AACC6V1-BECgu8TmbpEHCjPda?dl=0. –Davey2010Talk 22:14, 17 July 2021 (UTC)
  • @Davey2010: We would definitely rather have individual images at the highest resolution available rather than PDFs like this.
  • Not very interesting to have nearly interchangeable images. I'm afraid that if you want to be helpful, you'll have to use your eyes and your judgment, and try to upload a representative set of images, but not a bunch that might as well be the same image. - Jmabel ! talk 06:29, 18 July 2021 (UTC)
  • Jmabel I wasn't going to upload PDFS I was going to upload the actual high res images. The PDFS were to show what would be uploaded.
I certainly agree with your second paragraph and said that above - As I said the only major difference with the images is the weather conditions, the other thing that's changed over the course of 5 years is a gate/cattle fence being erected .... that's it (and possibly a new flower or 2 which I photographed).
Maybe I'll upload everything I have now (same or different routes with different weather conditions) then after that just upload anything substantially different
Shame but again I guess people wont want to see the same thing again and again.
Anyway thanks for your reply. Thanks, –Davey2010Talk 10:37, 18 July 2021 (UTC)

The Wikipedia page about me has a very old photo, and I own the copyright to a recent, updated photo. Asking for an editor's help to upload it.

Hello, my name is Patrick Reynolds and the Wikipedia page about me is at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Patrick_Reynolds_(activist)

I am not a Wikipedia editor, but am hoping an editor will help me update my photo at the page above. The updated photos are all at www.Tobaccofree.org/photos/ and I own the copyright to all the photos on that page. The four at top are the most recent photos; any of them are fine.

I have other RJ Reynolds family photos I'd like to contribute to Wikipedia Commons but would need an editor's help to do that. Most can be found at www.Tobaccofree.org/book if you scroll down a bit.

Can anyone help? Please call or email me, if so. Thank you.

@Elf-Volunteer: Very nice pictures. I know this is a little strange but sadly just the statement "no permission required" isn't quite enough for us. We need an explicit license stating (among other things) that derivative versions and commercial use are allowed. (Also, probably a good idea in general to indicate whether things can be used without even a credit or whether a particular credit should be given.) There are three ways to resolve this, take you choice:
  • On the site, you can modify "No permission required" to either an explicit "CC-BY" (https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/) with an indication of what attribution is desired, or (if no attribution is required) "CC-0" (https://creativecommons.org/share-your-work/public-domain/cc0/).
  • Alternatively, you could put up another page somewhere (even on an otherwise unlinked page) at https://tobaccofree.org/ to indicate that photos that say "No permission required" may be used under the "CC-BY" license (and indicate the attribution) or if no attribution is required you can do the same and indicate "CC-0"; then link that here in this discussion, and we're good to go. (Just to be clear: the reason we need you to do that within the domain is that we have no way to verify who "Elf-Volunteer" is.)
  • Finally, if you don't want to do this on that domain, COM:OTRS explains how you can send confidential correspondence to establish that you are who you say you are and are granting this license. This is equally effective, but typically slower, probably weeks because of a limited number of OTRS volunteers, and a bit of a backlog. - Jmabel ! talk 03:35, 20 July 2021 (UTC)

Patrick chose to work this through in a series of emails with me, which is not ideal, but it's OK. Permissions are now clear at https://tobaccofree.org/photos/. I will do the relevant uploads. Jmabel ! talk 22:33, 22 July 2021 (UTC)

Hi

I'm looking to upload this image (Link) for use on the Anzac Day AFL match Wikipedia page.

Searching on Tineye reveals no copyright infringements, and it seems to be based on the Rising sun badge, which is now in the public domain.

Someone has also uploaded a transparent version (Logo).

Is there some version of this image that I can use? Thanks in advance DiamondIIIXX (talk) 02:44, 14 July 2021 (UTC)

@Jmabel: So no problem with uploading it? It's free on Openclipart (https://openclipart.org/detail/217524/anzac-logo-red-19152015) and publicdomainvectors (https://publicdomainvectors.org/en/free-clipart/Anzac-red-logo/56877.html), (giving Openclipart as the source). Looks OK to upload as CC-0. - Jmabel ! talk 21:12, 15 July 2021 (UTC)
Whatever additional personal work the uploader to Openclipart put into the action of transferring the image to a svg derivative may be CC0, but the original jpg works from which it is explicitly derived, rslsa and timesofmalta (apparently made in 2007), have no indication of being free, which makes the derivative non free. -- Asclepias (talk) 22:42, 15 July 2021 (UTC)
@Asclepias: The logo seems to be the logo of the non-profit "Anzac Appeal". Does this page help? (http://www.anzacwebsites.com/logo/anzac-day-logo.htm). The logo has existed earlier than 2007, the logo was on footballer's shirts in 2005 (https://www.theaustralian.com.au/sport/afl-new/glenns-10-the-top-10-greatest-collingwood-v-essendon-anzac-day-clashes/news-story/169d2ad2b87072f8cacfcfa73fcc5145). Can it be uploaded as a non-free image? DiamondIIIXX (talk) 02:39, 16 July 2021 (UTC)
The design of a logo is one thing, but another thing is that each particular rendering (representation, version) of a logo, such as a digital drawing, can also have a copyright. If an image is not free, it cannot be uploaded to Commons. -- Asclepias (talk) 03:41, 16 July 2021 (UTC)
@Asclepias: OK, But I can upload it as a non-free image to Wikipedia, correct? DiamondIIIXX (talk) 04:00, 16 July 2021 (UTC)
That would be for the Wikipedia users to decide. For an official answer, you would have to ask on Wikipedia. We can't give an official answer here. But possibly not. It can be long to explain in detail. In short, en.wikipedia accepts non-free logos in very special cases. It depends basically on two things. Firstly, the subject of the article where the image of the logo would be displayed. Usually, it is allowed only in the article, if there is one, about the specific organization who uses this logo as its identification. For example, if this logo is the identification of the organization Anzac Appeal, it would be allowed in the article, if there were one, about that organization. A non-free logo would also be allowed in an article about the logo itself or about the artist or other person who designed it. A usage in the article Anzac day match would probably not be allowed, unless the logo is the official logo of the Anzac day match. Secondly, the version of the logo. Normally, only the official and current version used by the organization itself is allowed. It would be copied directly from a webpage or a document of the organization. For example, the image of the logo in an article about the organization Anzac Appeal would be copied from a recent document of that organization. Derivatives, unofficial renderings or versions of non-free logos, are normally not allowed. There are some short explanations on pages such as en:Wikipedia:Logos, but practical examples can be found on Wikipedia in past deletion discussions and in talk pages such as Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. Also, if you can find that the design of the Anzac Appeal logo is so old that its copyright has expired, or if Commons users consider that it is too simple to be copyrighted, then a free rendering of it would be accepted. Again, I'm not giving an official answer. I'm only trying to give an idea of the situation. -- Asclepias (talk) 14:10, 16 July 2021 (UTC)

After that, I noticed a picture of Tsutsui Ichiza in the Hungarian and English versions of Tokujiro Tsutsui (File: Tsutsui and Japanese actors at Hősök tere (Heroes' Square), Budapest, Hungary in 1930..png). In, Tsutsui himself is not shown. The person on the far left is Minoru Yoshida, who plays a Japanese musical instrument. Would you like to call the caption "People in the Tsutsui troupe in Budapest"? This is the easiest, isn't it? Or I think it is necessary to upload a new group photo of the troupe showing Tsutsui. How would you like it?

Use of copyrighted pictures and videos

Hi guys, I'm currently in the process of writing an article and a few weeks ago I uploaded some images I was planning on using. I checked back earlier today and my account was flooded with notifications. Looks like they've all been deleted for copyright violations and some of the editors are quite cross with me. I uploaded the files via Wikipedia Commons and attributed the authors as well as linked to the websites the images were sourced from. Some of he images were copyrighted but it was my understanding that it was acceptable to use them provided the owners were given proper credit.

I've had look today and noticed that there is an option to upload "Non-free Content" provided your account has been active for four days and 10 edits have been completed. I haven't started writing the article yet so I don't have that number of edits under my belt. It's also stated that the use of "Non-free" content should be kept to a minimum. It's going to be a long article so I'm planning on using at least a dozen images. All of these images have been sourced from the web, so they've all got copyrights attached. If I'd like to use these images, is it possible to upload them via Commons provided I use the proper attribution (there were several options available and I'm not really sure which one I needed to pick) or do they need to uploaded as "non-free content? Thank you, Any help anyone can offer would be very much appreciated. — Preceding unsigned comment added by GoishiKatan (talk • contribs) 08:14, 16 July 2021 (UTC)

CONICET

https://santafe.conicet.gov.ar/wp-content/uploads/sites/102/2014/10/calle3.jpg is the link to the Imge with public license as it is a CONICET publication and CONICET is our public science academy and its repository includes all public images. You had already deleted tis image when I uploaded it as a file and I need to be sure you are not going to delete my files with no reason again. Thanks! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Liliana Babbage (talk • contribs) 18:31, 16 July 2021 (UTC)

@Liliana Babbage:
Hello,
A useful source should include context to verify the licence. A link only to the image calle3.jpg, as above, does not provide context. The description page of the file should include a link with context, such as this webpage, as you provided there. This allows the verification that the website and the image are under the license, in this case CC BY 2.5-ar.
It is recommended to also add the template LicenseReview, so a licence reviewer will confirm the presence of the licence, in case the licence or the webpage is later removed from the source website.
If legitimate free files were deleted, you can request their "undeletion" on the page Commons:Undeletion requests, explaining the situation and providing the links. -- Asclepias (talk) 21:58, 16 July 2021 (UTC)

I do not understand when is enough. The context web page is: https://santafe.conicet.gov.ar/las-calles-del-predio-conicet-dr-alberto-cassano-ya-tienen-los-nombres-de-destacadas-figuras-de-la-ciencia-argentina/

It is a CONICET webpage as you might notice. The page includes the image and the following note:

Los contenidos del CONICET están licenciados bajo Creative Commons Reconocimiento 2.5 Argentina License ... with the link to https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/2.5/ar/

So, when is enough for you? It is clearly a Creative Commons license the license for the image.

What else do you need? Please, put the image back and/or, let me upload it to the wikicommon repository without asking more and more requirements with no reason at all.

Using a graph or figure

I wish to refer to an informative data figure in an article, but it is not my fiugre. I used https://droughtmonitor.unl.edu/DmData/TimeSeries.aspx to customize the data to be the time frame I needed. How can I make sure to cite this source properly, or am I even allowed to use it at all? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Rstrait (talk • contribs) 23:03, 16 July 2021 (UTC)

  • @Rstrait: As to what you can do in an article, and how to cite your sources there, that is probably best asked on the relevant site (I'm guessing English-language Wikipedia; we don't have articles on Commons).
  • Similarly: there may be some fair use basis to upload a non-free image directly to the English-language Wikipedia, but Commons does not accept non-free images, and that site does not appear to offer any free license for their images. It looks like they have telephone contact info, so you might work something out for them to offer a license, but the lack of an email address is kind of weird these days. Anyway, unless they are willing to put the relevant licensing on their site (unlikely), they'd need to send permission as explained at COM:OTRS. - Jmabel ! talk 00:21, 17 July 2021 (UTC)

I was enjoying my time uploading images however I may have misunderstood the selection 'Creative Commons CC0 Waiver (release all rights, like public domain: legal code)' as I uploaded images from Getty images permitting 'Editorial use' (https://www.gettyimages.fi/unreleased-imagery).

I was recently advised that public headshots or open use license are not ok to upload. Can a someone pls assist as I would like to upload additional images. thank you for your time in advance -MBC — Preceding unsigned comment added by MbenoitControl (talk • contribs) 03:44, 18 July 2021 (UTC)

hi there. I did not offer the license. the site openly states the images can be used for this purpose and there is no reason to contact them please see (https://www.gettyimages.fi/unreleased-imagery) Getty images is a database of images and the 'authors' are listed as 'contributors' for Getty on the images. Would images uploaded to Facebook for non commercial purposes be considered copyrighted?

Say, if for example they were uploaded by a non profit group with the explicit intention of having the image distributed? — Preceding unsigned comment added by OpticalBloom241 (talk • contribs) 15:57, 19 July 2021 (UTC)

Hi @OpticalBloom241: License can only be determined by explicit written statement. Even if they actually say "we want this to be redistributed", that's not sufficient because the threshold for commons licenses also includes permission to modify and sell. DMacks (talk) 16:20, 19 July 2021 (UTC)
I saw a dozen of images that I uploaded here, back on Facebook and people saying to the person "nice picture you took". When I said "this picture is taken by me and is under license", the reactions were not so nice, even the 'sysop' of the group kicked me out, because I was too negative. So something from Facebook can come from anywhere, even from here, you can't trust it. There is always permission needed from the photographer too. - Richardkiwi (talk) (talk) 16:43, 19 July 2021 (UTC)

@OpticalBloom241: you might want to take a look at Commons:Licensing#Acceptable_licenses. The short of it: just saying "we're happy to see this redistributed" isn't enough of a permission, especially because it doesn't make clear whether commercial use & derivative works are OK. Also: even the many works we have here under licenses like {{Cc-by-sa-4.0}} are copyrighted; the difference is that the owner of the copyright has granted a license. - Jmabel ! talk 23:33, 19 July 2021 (UTC)

Creating a new Wikipedia Page/category ?

Hello and thank you anyone for help,

I am new to this for sure, have been an observer for a long time. Me and many colleagues both public and private are wanting to create a unique page, again, sorry for my complete ignorance. Our page will be dedicated to scientifically acquired paleontological specimens discovered and collected by non-academic people throughout the history of paleontology (over 150yrs). We have spent a great deal of time creating this publication documented list. We are humble enough to know we cannot find everything. We are hoping to create a page that allows others to share their published referenced data now and in the future. Is this even possible on this site? Data from the late 1800's and early 1900's is being lost. Museum and journal references are getting harder to track down. We have a large team working on curating the information before it is lost. Also new information is not being curated in one place. Can I do this here. Thank you anyone for help. — Preceding unsigned comment added by CK Preparations (talk • contribs) 19:24, 19 July 2021 (UTC)

Nakagawa Hidenari → Nakagawa Hideshige

中川秀成 is not called Nakagawa Hidenari but Nakagawa Hideshige.

In Asia, if you call 中川秀成 as it is, it's Nakagawa Hideshige.

Nakagawa Hidenari comes out as 中川秀成 when translating Nakagawa Hidenari.

About 中川秀成 foreigners are mistaken for Hidenari, and it's recognized that it's correct.

From childhood I had always thought of it as a beautiful cave but up until 15 years ago (1997) it definitely wasnʼt an Inari shrine.” Lord Hideshige Nakagawa allowed many vassals to live in the Kudo area.

  • @M7aub: There's no indication there of any reuse permission at all, let alone a Commons-compatible free license. You say have no way to contact anyone to get permission to reuse it. This seems like a pretty clear lack of any right at all to use the image, so it clearly doesn't belong on Commons. Is there any reason you thought otherwise? - Jmabel ! talk 06:52, 20 July 2021 (UTC)

  • @Last Journey: You seem to have uploaded File:Skyline-Farms-school-11-e1432129665674.jpg successfully, but if you don't indicate its copyright status as either public domain (for some specific reason) or free-licensed (under some specific license) it will be deleted. I see no indication at the source you have given that it is either of these, and the page from which you took it explicitly says, "All Right Reserved by Alabama Pioneers".
  • There is no indication that you have had any other activity on Commons besides uploading that file and asking your question here. This account has literally no activity that I can find on any of the other WMF wikis. Can you be more precise about what you were trying to do, and exactly what message you got? - Jmabel ! talk 17:51, 20 July 2021 (UTC)

Image proportions changed on their own during upload

I downloaded an image from Wikimedia Commons that had large empty spaces above and below (File:Render amicoWhite 3quarterRight NoBG 2K 2021 06 11.png), cropped these areas for better presentation and saved as a new PNG file, while looked proportionally correct. After I uploaded it to Wikimedia Commons I used the original image's URL as a source and the author as the company who owns it. Is this the proper method?--Daltonsatom (talk) 13:00, 21 July 2021 (UTC)

@Daltonsatom: Sometimes, yes. Strictly speaking, a company is not an author in most countries, but the sole mention of the company is often accepted on Commons, being understood that the meaning is "unidentified author for the company" and that the copyright and attribution is to the company. However, in this particular case, something seems confusing. For the cropped image File:Render amicoWhite 3quarterRight NoBG 2K 2021 06 11C.png, you say that the author is the company Intellivision Entertainment and, as the source, you link to the uncropped file File:Render amicoWhite 3quarterRight NoBG 2K 2021 06 11.png. But for that uncropped "original" source, you say that you are, yourself, the creator of this photo. (Actually a name different from your user name, but that links to your user page). And User:Shizhao says that your authorship of this photo was officially confirmed in a VRTS communication [9]. (Presumably a confirmation of authorship and license issued by an authorized officer of the company Intellivision Entertainment, because you seem to say that the copyright is owned by that company and because Commons:Deletion requests/File:00000000Amico.jpg seems to imply that the photo may have been originally published on the website www.intellivisionamico.com). But you, as an individual user of Commons, are not yourself the whole company Intellivision Entertainment. So, something needs to be modified on one page or the other, to make the information consistent on both files. On both files, if that is the case, you should use or a wording that makes clear that you are the photographer and that you made the photo for Intellivision Entertainment, who owns the copyright on it. Or, if you prefer, you can remove your name from the uncropped file. But it is confusing to write only your name as author on one file and only the name of the company as author on the other file. -- Asclepias (talk) 15:00, 21 July 2021 (UTC)

@Asclepias Okay. At this point, I have changed the author to Intellivision Entertainment for the two images to keep: File:Render amicoWhite 3quarterRight NoBG 2K 2021 06 11C.png and File:Render amicoWhite 3quarterRight NoBG 2K 2021 06 11D highres.png. This corresponds to the ShareAlike4.0 release for the uncropped original image. The file ending in C (File:Render amicoWhite 3quarterRight NoBG 2K 2021 06 11C.png) is being deleted because it was not high enough resolution compared to the original (about 900 x 450 px compared to 2048 x 2048. Let me know if this is okay.--Daltonsatom (talk) 15:23, 21 July 2021 (UTC)

Well, the "author" field is now consistent on all files, which is a good thing. But now, it is the "source" field that becomes confusing. A higher-resolution image (File:Render amicoWhite 3quarterRight NoBG 2K 2021 06 11D highres.png) cannot logically be sourced from a lower-resolution image (File:Render amicoWhite 3quarterRight NoBG 2K 2021 06 11.png), (unless the image is an upscaled version, in which cas it would not be a higher-resolution image). If the "D" version is higher-resolution, it must come from somewhere else than the lower-resolution version. Maybe it comes from your own files or from a webpage of the company? Please indicate the actual source, whatever it is. Also, will there be a reason to keep the smaller version? If it's only to keep the VRTS note, I suppose the VRTS team can transfer it to the larger version. Unless the VRTS communication is applicable to the smaller version only (in which case the larger version would require its own VRTS confirmation to be kept on Commons). The "date" field should also be made consistent. -- Asclepias (talk) 16:11, 21 July 2021 (UTC)

@Asclepias They are both actually the same resolution. Somehow, even though I kept the width the same (28.44 inches) it ended up being double the pixels, but I used the 2048 x 2048 to make it, so it is about 2048 x 1010 that just got upscaled by a factor of slightly over two. I didn't worry about it because I guess the problem with the cropped version C was that it was half the resolution and the clarity of the cropped image is as good as the original. Is that going to be a problem? As far as having both images, I would have used the cropped one to have it OTRS released (if that is the correct term), but I didn't realize until I uploaded it to the Wikipedia page that the "no background (what NoBG means in the filename)" background would take up as much vertical space. If that high res cropped one can be the primary VTRS with the OTRS verified ShareAlike4.0 release, it can be the only one.--Daltonsatom (talk) 17:17, 21 July 2021 (UTC)

Ok, if version "D" is merely upscaled from the other version, then the source is fine (although the link should be slightly reformmatted to link to the description page, not to the undescribed image). Consequently, it is not necessary to transfer the VRTS note or to obtain a new one. And then the version "File:Render amicoWhite 3quarterRight NoBG 2K 2021 06 11.png" is also kept as the "original" version. -- Asclepias (talk) 17:51, 21 July 2021 (UTC)

@Asclepias: FWIW: if the source shows valid free-licensing, and there is no reason to believe that is specific to the low-resolution version, it's OK to replace with a higher-resolution image that is clearly the same photo. For example, as far as I know all of the images in Category:Seattle Municipal Archives via Flickr use Flickr to show the licensing, but many (maybe half?) show higher-resolution images from the Archives' own site, which is slightly vague about licensing (it states similar terms, but does not single out a well-known license). Typically the image page from the Archives' own site is linked in the description field (from the description on Flickr) but the more important source to specify is the one that shows the licensing. - Jmabel ! talk 17:25, 21 July 2021 (UTC)

@Asclepias Yes, the "highres" in version D was merely to indicate it was not a downgraded resolution as was inadvertently done for version B and C, but I maintained the original resolution of [:File:Render amicoWhite 3quarterRight NoBG 2K 2021 06 11.png]. So, after B and C are deleted only the original image and cropped image with the same resolution will remain. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Daltonsatom (talk • contribs) 19:06, 21 July 2021 (UTC)

Hi, im making an article for a friend, he is a writer and recently he started to sell their books on amazon. The thing is, i can't upload photos, i didn't take that photos but i have his consent. — Preceding unsigned comment added by NicolasCarol (talk • contribs) 21:39, 22 July 2021 (UTC)

  • If that article about your friend is in the English-language Wikipedia, please see en:WP:COI. There are very few circumstances where it is appropriate to write i Wikipedia about your own personal friend.
  • Meanwhile, here on Commons: the issue would be the consent of the copyright-holder (typically the photographer), not the subject of the photo. The only person who can grant a license to waive rights is the person who owns those rights. If the copyright-holder has a page or site on the Internet clearly under their control, they can indicate the license there; otherwise they will need to go through the process described at COM:OTRS. - Jmabel ! talk 01:22, 23 July 2021 (UTC)

Inherited photographs

Hello together!

I inherited a lot of photographs from my late father. A lot of those photographs are from the 60s-80s and could be of value for Commons. Like pictures from the Berlin wall or buildings in Munich, that since then have changed a lot, and also public events. I'm a little bit uncertain on how to proceed, as I'm not keen on uploading a few hundred images and then waking up one day, seeing all of them being part of a mass deletion request. (Which seems to happen a lot as of late) I am and my father was from Germany. So I get, that I should be the copyright-holder of those images. Do I just upload them as usual and then maybe set the author to my father? Or do I need to do something specific in the Release rights step of the upload process? Or do I maybe even need to provide an OTRS ticket for this cause? If there are any guidelines on this topic, I would be very thankful for a link. I couldn't find any searching myself.

Thanks in advance.

Cheers, --DavidJRasp (talk) 10:23, 23 July 2021 (UTC)

@DavidJRasp: This is how I see it. In Berne Convention countries such as Germany, copyright subsists for 70 years after the death of the creator of a work. However, there is a difference between that and who actually owns the copyright after death. Most people do not consider this in their wills, but if there is a residuary clause in terms of "I leave all my property not heretofore mentioned to X", then X is the owner of the copyright in the sense that only s/he has the legal right to enforce it, because the wording is wide enough to admit that interpretation. I'd suggest you examine your father's will and see if there is such a clause, and who is the beneficiary of it. That person should contact OTRS, and the author should be credited as your father. Hope that helps. Rodhullandemu (talk) 10:54, 23 July 2021 (UTC)
@DavidJRasp: If you are the owner of the copyright, you can do as you said in your question. You upload the files as usual. You mention your father as the author. And you place a free license of your choice. If you want to make this clearer, you can optionally use a template that specifies that the license is placed by the heir. There are a few templates already in the category Category:License tags for transferred copyright. If your favorite licence is not there, you can use the more general template Heirs-license with any free license. For an example, you can look at a photo I uploaded, which was taken by my father. You do not need to send anything to OTRS/VRTS, unless the photos were previously published somewhere. I suppose you may optionally send something to OTRS/VRTS if you really fear that someone one day might dispute your identity. -- Asclepias (talk) 12:05, 23 July 2021 (UTC)
@Asclepias: Thanks! That helps a lot. I don't see, why someone would dispute that. But then again those mass deletion request at the moment seem reckless to me. And I fear that one of those mass deletion request could hit at point, where I don't have the time to deal with it. I have the necessary document, according to German law, to prove this. So I will think on how to proceed and if it's really necessary to provide OTRS ticket or maybe only to have everything prepared, just in case. Thanks again --DavidJRasp (talk) 12:31, 23 July 2021 (UTC)

Few Quick Questions

Would you please help by answering the below questions very clearly and concisely?

  • Why do I need to have a WIKIMEDIA COMMONS User Page?
  • I have a user account on Wikipedia with its associated user page - do I need to have a WIKIMEDIA User page as well?
  • What can I do with WIKIMEDIA COMMONS?
  • What are the rules and Policies?
  • What will block my account in WIKIMEDIA? — Preceding unsigned comment added by ALEX B. 1992 (talk • contribs) 12:45, 23 July 2021 (UTC)
@ALEX B. 1992: I'm sorry, but "what are all your policies" is not a "quick question".
You don't need to have a Wikimedia Commons user page. You can look around at some other people's to see how they choose to use them, but it's optional.
I don't even know what a "Wikimedia User Page" would be, so I doubt you need one.
As for what you can do here: mainly, you can look at other people's photos (and other audiovisual media), and improve descriptions, categories, and structured data; you can upload your own photos (and other audiovisual media) (within our COM:SCOPE) and document them with descriptions, categories, and structured data. Content from Commons is easily reused in other Wikimedia projects.
Rules and policies: there are a lot of them, and no way I can give a quick summary. If you want something exhaustive, start with Category:Commons policies. If you want a reasonable place to start, start by reading and following up what is already on your user talk page.
An administrator will block your account if you vandalize or if you seem to be incapable of following policies after a reasonable amount of feedback. - Jmabel ! talk 15:34, 23 July 2021 (UTC)

Thank you so much Jmabel for your reply - I will read all of it - appreciated.

How can i submit art work from a Artist i work for? Do I need written permissions?

I am creating a biography page for an Artist I work for. I have tried to publish photos of the Artist and his work but the files have been rejected. What can i do? — Preceding unsigned comment added by IN ABSENCE (talk • contribs) 12:46, 23 July 2021 (UTC)

  • Unless the artist in question is reasonably notable (e.g. at the level where there is a Wikipedia article about them, or is likely to be) probably their original artwork does not belong on Commons. That's not a hard and fast rule, but please don't be surprised if artwork by a non-notable artist is deleted.
  • To upload copyrighted work by someone other than yourself, there are basically two possibilities:
    • The copyright-holder can go through the process described at COM:OTRS either to license specific work or to indicate that your account may upload their copyrighted work on their behalf.
    • On a site or page clearly controlled by the copyright-holder, they can indicate the appropriate free license for the work; after that, anyone can upload that work to Commons without creating a copyright/licensing issue. - Jmabel ! talk 15:38, 23 July 2021 (UTC)

I would appreciate a briefing about WIKIMEDIA COMMONS for beginners and please answer my question in bellow

  1. Do the WIKIMEDIA COMMONS and Wikipedia are linked and will help for sharing articles in Wikipedia? Thank you!
  2. Is my User Page is same as Wikipedia and I need to copy about my self from Wikipedia to Wikimedia or this is a separate?
  3. Would you please send me a link of tutorial to read everything about WIKIMEDIA COMMONS before I create my article?
  4. For creating an article from scratch, do I need WIKIMEDIA as well?
  5. Are these brands (WIKICOMMOSNS, WIKIPEDIA, MEDIAWIKI and more) are connected with each other in order to create an article in Wikipedia? — Preceding unsigned comment added by ALEX B. 1992 (talk • contribs) 13:13, 23 July 2021 (UTC)

  2. They are separate, and as I answered you above, not mandatory.
  3. Please follow up the links that have already been provided on your talk page. Then come back if you have more specific questions. There are no articles on Wikimedia Commons, so the question as asked doesn't make a lot of sense.

National Register of Historic Places listings in Tuolumne County, California

I accidentally deleted a photo that was intended to illustrate the site of Watts & Tannahill General Store, a NRHP listing, at 18761 Main St. in Groveland, California.

The photo was not of the NRHP property. The Watts & Tannahill store is now the Iron Door Saloon. The person who originally added the photo mistakenly thought that the (now closed) Iron Door General Store across the street was the successor to Watts & Tannahill.

I realized that the photo I hoped to use as a replacement in the Wikipedia article (not to mention the original photo) probably is not free to use. Accordingly, I need someone to restore the photo I deleted:

https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Watts_and_Tannehill_Country_Store-2.jpg

I do not know how to fix this. I also do not know how to get someone to replace this incorrect photo with a usable photo of the Iron Door Saloon. Any help I can get on this will be much appreciated. Rontrigger (talk) 23:46, 23 July 2021 (UTC)

All right, I admit to being a complete idiot here, but I wanted to let you know that I was able to restore the photo I had deleted. However, I still do not know how I can properly replace it with a photo of the actual National Register property. Rontrigger (talk) 00:08, 24 July 2021 (UTC)

Don't worry, you did not delete the file and you could not have deleted it even if you wanted to. You merely removed its display from a Wikipedia page. Which was the right thing to do, I suppose, if, as you say, the photo does not show the building described in the page. Why did you put it back in the page? If you know this subject well, you can even correct the information in the description page of the file. If you want to place a photo of the right building in the Wikipedia page, well, you would have to find one that has a free license or, perhaps even better, take one if you're not far from there, and upload it to Commons, with a different filename, and then insert the new filename in the Wikipedia page. -- Asclepias (talk) 01:14, 24 July 2021 (UTC)

Multi-licensing with CC0

Hi all,

I was thinking of licensing my images under CC0 alongside the existing license (CC-BY-SA-4.0). Would that be possible for me to do, or are the licenses incompatible? --LivelyRatification (talk) 02:47, 24 July 2021 (UTC)

@LivelyRatification: Hi, Well, it sounds illogical. Either you claim a copyright (CC BY-SA 4.0) or you don't claim a copyright (CC0). I would say that a CC0 dedication is not compatible with anything else. -- Asclepias (talk) 04:58, 24 July 2021 (UTC)
That's what I was thinking. Might just be best to use CC0 in the future. --LivelyRatification (talk) 05:01, 24 July 2021 (UTC)

llghtchlld Spelling

Hello,

My name is Alex, and I am llghtchlld's assistant, and also the person who created the page for llghtchlld.

I was wondering if it was possible to change the main title of llghtchlld's Wikipedia page to the correct spelling. (with the i's as l's) This spelling of the i's replaced with l's is not a stylization, it is the actual spelling of llghtchlld's name, and it is the way that her name is spelled throughout her online presence. The purpose of this was to be distinct from other artists with the name "Lightchild".

I know that Wikipedia has very strict policies when it comes to spelling and formatting, but please let me know if it is possible to make this spelling correction, and avoid confusion surrounding her name online.

Newbie uploading question

Hello, I'm a wikimedia newbie, and for computer use in general have used them every day for a good 30 years and am a permanent newbie.

My first use was to enter this month's photo challenge ('Framing'). I've managed to upload a pic, but otherwise have been defeated by all the gobb.. I guess I mean the terminology. Maybe there is something to do with the categorisation etc. that I couldn't make head or tail of.

Although via my username New EPenguin I can see my pic, I can't see it when I navigate (somehow) to the challenge thread. I wonder what I'm doing wrong or not doing.

Actually I think if someone could just tell me what I should write in what boxes where, (Where! Where! - computer people have this terrible habit of telling you what but never where) I would then more easily latch on to what the general explanations are trying to tell me.

Thanks for your patience.

Adding an original portrait to a page

Hi, I think I have a meaningful contribution to make to the article on the composer Josquin des Prez, having discovered the painted portrait on which the only known of the composers existing engraved portrait most probably was based. It actually figures already in Wikipedia under the work of the painter. I cannot upload the image of the 15th century painting file saying I own the copyright. Obviously it is more than 500years old and bears no copyright. However I do not succeed to transfer the link to the image either. In this year, exactly 5 centurys after Josquin's death this would be an important contribution to the composers heritage. Derivative work in Iran

I uploaded this image and a moderator is tagged it as a derivative work. Agree that it's a derivative work. Based on here:

" پس از 78 سال زندگانی با عزت و افتخار در14اسفند 1365 هجری شمسی در دربیمارستان تهران بسته شد "

that person(in the photo) is passed out 35 years ago. The DW page in persian is all about the US laws. Nothing about Iran! So tried to find something in Copyright rules by territory. Again nothing. Any idea? Rohalamin (talk) 15:58, 25 July 2021 (UTC)

  • @Rohalamin: Yes, your photo is derivative work from an almost certainly copyrighted work. Freedom of panorama is not recognized in the copyright law of Iran, so that doesn't help. It is hard to imagine a scenario where the artwork you photographed could be in the public domain: copyright in Iran lasts for the life of the artist plus 50 years. It is almost impossible to imagine that the artist died before 1970. - Jmabel ! talk 16:04, 26 July 2021 (UTC)

-- Asclepias (talk) 20:37, 27 July 2021 (UTC)

  • @Jmabel: Direct links to their profile pictures: kim soo-hyun, Lee tae-min, park si-hoo I got removal alert after I posted the picture under different license. Then I changed license to YouTube CC BY and it still got deleted. I don't know why and what I should do to avoid same mistake...
  • @Aurelio de Sandoval: can you help out here? - Jmabel ! talk 16:07, 26 July 2021 (UTC)

    • @Chunva718: These seem to be approved: is there still a problem at this point? - Jmabel ! talk 17:18, 26 July 2021 (UTC)
      • @Jmabel: Thank you for your responses... Yes those examples were approved. I want to upload Youtube screenshot like those too using another picture. A screenshot from this YouTube: KBS World TV using this License: {{YouTube CC-BY|KBS World TV}}. Would that get rejected if I upload it again here? I don't wanna get suspended now after 3-4 pictures got rejected for copyright problem. A question, how many strikes to rules does it take before a user get suspended? Thank you again for your help...
As explained by Jmabel at the beginning, there is no free license indicated in the description of this video. Most videos on youtube do not have free licenses. Some have free licenses. You can upload with the license "YouTube CC-BY" only images from videos that are released under that free license by the owner of the copyright. -- Asclepias (talk) 18:24, 26 July 2021 (UTC)

How to export File Information?

I wish to export the summary part of the file information of several images in Commons - to put them in a very simple database (in Excel or Access) and feed an artwork made with them. Is there a simple way to do it to implement that - I am not a computer doom...

@2Šárka: Ahoj a vítej.
Hi, and welcome. I am sorry to inform you that you have triggered Special:AbuseFilter/153 by trying to cross-wiki upload smaller (<50,000 bytes or <2,000,000 pixels) jpg photos as a new user while leaving the summaries intact. Each jpg photo you tried to upload is smaller, and you indicated it's your own work. Usually when someone uploads smaller photos, they are copyright violations taken from the web. If you took the photos yourself, please upload the full-size originals of them per COM:HR, including EXIF metadata. If you did not take the photos, please see Commons:Licensing for why we can't accept them, and have the photographer(s) license them on their official websites or social media or send the photos and permissions via VRT with carbon copies to you. If you can't get a compliant license, the photos may still be uploaded to English Wikipedia in compliance with en:WP:F or cs:Wikipedie:Autorské právo#Fair use because we don't allow Fair Use here. If you change the summaries or use our Upload Wizard instead, you should be able to avoid that filter.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 20:03, 29 July 2021 (UTC)

Reuploading old version of SVG file

I'm trying to upload an old version of File:Ampel.svg. The most recent versions changed the animation method from scripting to CSS (and also reduced the file size). This is desirable on the whole, but at least one page that uses it (w:en:Animated SVG) did so specifically because it was animated via scripting. So, I thought I'd make a copy so that the old version could be placed on pages that call for it, while the newer, sleeker version is used everywhere else.

However, I've run into a number of issues:

  1. I couldn't find a straightforward way to make a new page from an old file version. Given the existence of maps and other graphics that get updated, but for which keeping an old version might be desired, I thought there'd be a process for this. Did I miss one? Or do we deliberately not make it easy to "fork" images, to avoid problems that might go with users doing so haphazardly?
  2. Uploads to Commons from Commons are blocked—it's not whitelisted at Commons:Upload tools/wgCopyUploadsDomains. Is this intentional (again, not wanting easy forking)? Or is it an oversight?
  3. And then I couldn't upload the file at all, because “This SVG file contains an illegal namespace "http://www.w3.org/1999/02/22-rdf-syntax-ns".”.

Now I could try and remove the RDF from the file, but again, it's already on Commons; I just want to put an old version at a new name! Help? -- Perey (talk) 05:55, 29 July 2021 (UTC)

  • @Perey: You have to download and then re-upload. And someone should have done the new version under a different filename, if the old version was still desired. - Jmabel ! talk 18:25, 29 July 2021 (UTC)
I reverted the file for you and uploaded the new version as a different file under https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Ampel_animiert_css.svg . That should've been done anyway. --Taktaal (talk) 21:14, 29 July 2021 (UTC)
@Jmabel and Taktaal: Thanks for that. It's good to know I wasn't just missing an option somewhere! I don't think we can blame the uploader of the new version; they probably had no way to know the old version was still wanted, and they did bring down the file size quite a lot. I'll tag the old version to indicate why it shouldn't be changed to CSS animations. -- Perey (talk) 09:01, 30 July 2021 (UTC)

Image use question

Hello, I am wanting to upload a picture of a meme called "The Happy Merchant" (https://www.adl.org/education/references/hate-symbols/the-happy-merchant) to commons for use on an English Wikipedia article. This is an internet meme and so I do not know if it is copyrighted, but I think it goes under the same licence as "wojak", another internet meme. The licence for the image of "wojak" on wikipedia is visible here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Wojak_cropped.jpg (scroll down to see licence)

Can someone confirm for me that I am allowed to upload this. ThanksBwmdjeff (talk) 15:16, 30 July 2021 (UTC)

No. Commons is for specifically free licensed material only. No evidence is shown that the original artist has licensed it under a specific free license. (The image you link to on en:Wikipedia is not relevant to Commons, as it is on Wikipedia under copyrighted fair use, which is allowed in some limited contexts there, but not allowed on Commons.) -- Infrogmation of New Orleans (talk) 15:41, 30 July 2021 (UTC)
So if I want to use my image on wikipedia, I would have to use the "fair use" thing you are talking about? How would i go about this? ThanksBwmdjeff (talk) 15:47, 30 July 2021 (UTC)
@Bwmdjeff: Please see en:Wikipedia:Non-free content. If you have questions about that, they are probably better asked on the English-language Wikipedia. - Jmabel ! talk 19:24, 30 July 2021 (UTC)

Perhaps you meant to write this somewhere on the Spanish-language wiki, where you appear to have edited es:Usuario:CrodrigRubio07/Taller (a subpage of your user page). Hey, there is a file with flashing lights that is also very popular that needs to be deleted, but I am worried that the normal deletion process is too slow for such a dangerous thing, and with the speedy delete I run the chance of accidentally exposing someone to this content who may have a bad reaction to it when reviewing deletion (photosensitive epilepsy) What is the most logical and straightforward course of action from here on in? @Dixon Butler: It looks fine. The metadata include the correct orientation. You uploaded as landscape and the orientation field in the metadata is set at 90 CCW. The result is the same as for your other file File:Chapel, Snaresbrook Court.jpg, which has its metadata set to "normal" and presumably was rotated to portrait before upload. If you upload to Commons, under different filenames, several copies of the same image that differ only in size, they will be different files, but the smaller duplicates will probably be nominated for deletion and Commons will keep only the best one and delete the smaller duplicates. You want to "insert different sizes of an image" where? If in the English-language Wikipedia, you can see help pages such as en:Wikipedia:Extended image syntax. -- Asclepias (talk) 16:10, 31 July 2021 (UTC)

@Asclepias: underneath an image, for e.g. this one: [14], It says 'other resolutions' and gives different resolutions of the image. I want to know how we can upload different resolutions in the same image file. Username006 (talk) 03:56, 1 August 2021 (UTC)

@Username006: Hi, and welcome. Those are all downscaled versions (which we generate on demand and cache) of the same full-size version, which we store once, followed by a link to that full-size version.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 10:52, 1 August 2021 (UTC)
