how to create categories with similar name

File:Grace Clements 2014.jpg belongs to Grace Clements (athlete). however, there is also Grace Clements (artist) with full name "Grace Richardson Clements". what method should i use to create category for both of them? Gi vi an (talk) 07:07, 1 May 2021 (UTC)

Go to the File:Grace Clements 2014.jpg, add as category name "Grace_Clements_(athlete)". That will appear in red. Click on the red name. In the new category add as category [[Category:Female athletics competitors from the United Kingdom]] and [[Category:Heptathletes from the United Kingdom]]. Save. @Gi vi an: Well done. I just added the category "People of Dartford" to the Category:Grace_Clements_(athlete) and removed from File:Grace Clements 2014.jpg the categories "People of Dartford" and "Heptathletes from the United Kingdom" because they are now in the commons category of the athlete. recently uploaded file

I just uploaded File:Ma'Khia Bryant just before she was shot.png . I was trying to pattern the justification for this non-free image by using as a model File:Adam Toledo Body Camera Still.jpeg. When I tried to use the upload wizard I wasn't able to enter the correct information. How can this be corrected? Bob K31416 (talk) 02:32, 6 May 2021 (UTC)

@Bob K31416: there is no File:Adam Toledo Body Camera Still.jpeg in Commons, that image is in en-wiki: en:File:Adam Toledo Body Camera Still.jpeg. Commons does not allow fair use, and I don't think File:Ma'Khia Bryant just before she was shot.png can be kept here. The image should be uploaded locally to en-wiki where fair use is allowed. All lower resolution thumbnails can be viewed but not the original size file

I recently uploaded the image File:Sir Walter Raleigh by Simon van de Passe (1617).jpg. The "preview" and "other resolutions" links work well, but not the actual size "3,791 × 5,915 pixels" link nor the "Original file" link. Any idea why? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Wikipetzi (talk • contribs) 02:43, 1 May 2021 (UTC)

Help fix inverted updates to two maps please

Hello, I recently uploaded new versions of File:Alberta's Specialized Municipalities.png and File:Alberta's Specialized and Rural Municipalities.png but for the former I uploaded the file I intended for the latter, and for the latter I uploaded the file I intended for the former. I tried to fix the errors but now I get a warning on both pages that I am trying to upload a file that has already been uploaded. Can an admin delete by most recent upload at each file so that I can try again? Cheers, Hwy43 (talk) 06:01, 1 May 2021 (UTC)

Removing Metadata

Hello. I would like to remove the "Metadata" in an unload of mine from two days ago (May 6th). If that's not possible (which is likely so), then just to remove the last name in the "author" line. I have the support and know the individual, but just the same, would rather it's not there. (Besides, I am the original uploader of the image onto my computer, though deleted accidentally by myself over a year ago. I just don't want his last name appearing on the file page.) Thanks. JimPercy (talk) 16:13, 7 May 2021 (UTC)

  • @JimPercy: Trying to answer this, but a bit confused.
  • I assume by an "unload" you mean an "upload".
  • You have no uploads on that date, so I can't guess which file you mean.
  • By "metadata" do you mean EXIF data or something else? Anything other than the picture itself is metadata.
  • If you do mean the EXIF, that is part of the file, so the only way to remove it is to upload a version that lacks that EXIF data. We can't alter an uploaded file, but we can replace it and delete the old version. - Jmabel ! talk 06:33, 8 May 2021 (UTC)
  • @Jmabel: Yes, I meant to type "upload." The upload date to Commons was May 7th. The name is File:BoyReading. Now, under Metadata, I would like the name line to be removed or at least the last name starting with "R." I'd appreciate it if you could revert that one (with thumbnail crossed out), and upload the exact same image without that name detail in it. OTOH. If it's up to me to remove the name part, it will take me some time to figure out as I never have done that before. Thanks. JimPercy (talk) 13:19, 8 May 2021 (UTC)
    • Convenience link: File:BoyReading.jpg
    • @JimPercy: Again, it is not possible to modify a file already uploaded. The EXIF metadata is part of the file, and cannot be modified. We cannot edit already uploaded files: imagine the chaos of sorting out who did what if we could do such a thing. Nor is there any way to "cross out" a thumbnail. You need to create a version of the file without that metadata and upload that as a new version ("Upload a new version of this file"). Then we can delete the version that has the metadata that you want suppressed. - Jmabel ! talk 16:35, 8 May 2021 (UTC)
@JimPercy: I did what Jmabel asked, now the original may be hidden.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 06:59, 9 May 2021 (UTC)
  • @Jeff G.: Thanks, that's what I wanted done. I did find the image in a reference-type file of mine yesterday, but it had writing on the back side which shadowed through, hence, would have been unsuitable for uploading purpose. So good as it is now. JimPercy (talk) 13:53, 9 May 2021 (UTC)

@Uploading picture account: Hi, and welcome. Its actually public domain, the review takes too long to verify? Uploading picture account (talk) 23:15, 2 May 2021 (UTC)
@Uploading picture account: Why is it public domain?   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 23:26, 2 May 2021 (UTC)
I asked the owner of images to flickr to change license so I can upload it to wikimedia (Mostly using it for featured article), but is public domain an okay license to be upload right? Uploading picture account (talk) 00:14, 3 May 2021 (UTC)
@Uploading picture account: Actually, no, they chose a mark that somehow the photo has gotten into the public domain (without specifying how), not a license releasing it into the public domain. Please read COM:FLICKR and COM:L carefully and get them to choose differently.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 03:20, 3 May 2021 (UTC)
@Uploading picture account: Public domain is not a license. If a work is in the public domain that means that no one owns a copyright on it and therefore it is free for anyone to use, and no one can any more grant a license than they can grant a license to see sunlight.
The closest I'm aware of that anyone can come to that in granting a license is {{Cc-0}} which is irrevocable, and means that the copyright-holder waives all future rights, effectively saying the work may be treated as if it were in the public domain. Note that cc-0 means that you waive even the right of attribution. I always recommend against using cc-0 unless you have a good understanding of intellectual property rights law and understand what you are giving away, and it sounds from the question you just asked that you don't (I can't say anything definitive about the photographer in that respect, but if they are looking to you for advice, please be careful). I would far more strongly recommend a CC-BY license such as {{Cc-by-sa-4.0}}, which retains at least the right of attribution. - Jmabel ! talk 03:27, 3 May 2021 (UTC)

What date to choose if unknown, but surely before 1926?

The file:Drug store sign for products Heroin and Aspirin before US Heroin ban 1924.jpg is a replika (authentic reproduction) of an advertising sign of the US branch of drug company Bayer (see lower end). As it advertises the (then) legal (sic) drug Heroin, this US sign must be from before 1924, because in this year Heroin was prohibited in the US. I have no clue from when it is exactly, and the source page has no info thereon. Hence, what shall I write into the date field? Pittigrilli (talk) 15:30, 2 May 2021 (UTC)

If the ban came in the course of 1924, then {{Before|1925}} may be a logical possibility. Note that the photograph of the frame is apparently not from the same era. What does "GMK 04/72" mean? It looks part of the original image. Where does the statement "1 January 1919" come from? -- Asclepias (talk) 15:44, 2 May 2021 (UTC)
First: Right, the (re-)producer of the replika AND the photographer of this real jpg are definitely after 1925, however I understood that the date of the original work is the "master". What 'GMK 04/72' in the lower right means I don't know either, but I agree that it seems to be part of the original work, maybe a kind of serial number of the sign painter or the like. Second: The upload assistant forced me to give an exact date, so I made up the one now in the file (1 January 1919). This is why I ask. The {{Before|1925}} would then go into the date field? Pittigrilli (talk) 16:18, 2 May 2021 (UTC)
Yes, "Before 1925" would go into the date field. -- Asclepias (talk) 16:30, 2 May 2021 (UTC)
The frame is a utilitarian object too simple to be copyrighted. No problem there.
When the upload wizard won't let you give an accurate answer, you should correct it in the wiki as soon as possible after uploading. - Jmabel ! talk 16:23, 2 May 2021 (UTC)
It's not a copyright of the frame, it's the copyright of the photograph. -- Asclepias (talk) 16:26, 2 May 2021 (UTC)
[I changed the date in the meantime] @Asclepias: I see your point - however, the photograph has the "creative value" of a scan or facsimile - hence I assume that it is not copyrighted. Yet, somebody might argue to the contrary. Pittigrilli (talk) 16:45, 2 May 2021 (UTC)
@Asclepias: I see, the uploader didn't take the photo themself. I missed that. So the frame should be cropped out. - Jmabel ! talk 21:52, 2 May 2021 (UTC)
[from Uploader] - ??? - I do not see the point. The frame? The wooden frame? Brief explanation please... BTW, the border is already removed with Crop Tool. Pittigrilli (talk) 22:35, 2 May 2021 (UTC)
Pittigrilli, There could be various opinions about the level of original creativity of every photograph. As you wrote earlier, "somebody might argue", one way or the other. To simplify and to avoid lengthy discussions and any problems, Commons assumes that, in the United States, where Wikimedia is officially hosted, every photograph generates a copyright. That is different from the tradition of other countries. An exception on Commons is for photos of two-dimensional works. But not for photos of any three-dimensional objects. That is why Commons crops out the frames around artworks, when the photo is not under a free license. The frame and the fixtures in this photo are three-dimensional objects. That is different from a printed two-dimensional border or probably from a thin paper frame. You can see also the third point in the section "When should the PD-Art tag not be used?" of the page Commons:When to use the PD-Art tag. Thank you for having cropped the image. The next step would be to request the deletion of the first version of the file. -- Asclepias (talk) 00:49, 3 May 2021 (UTC)
Asclepias: That is the best explanation of a highly complex legal issue I saw in 16 years of Wikipedia activity, thank you. Ok, so I request deletion of the first uploaded picture of file:Drug store sign for products Heroin and Aspirin before US Heroin ban 1924.jpg in the Commons:Administrators'_noticeboard. If someone is in the mood to just do it, just go ahead. Pittigrilli (talk) 08:44, 3 May 2021 (UTC)
Requested, see: Commons:Administrators'_noticeboard#Please_delete_a_first_version_of_an_uploaded_file_(by_me)_due_to_copyright_issue. Pittigrilli (talk) 08:53, 3 May 2021 (UTC)

  • If you mean derivative works based on someone else's image, do understand that all of their original copyrights would still apply, plus yours. So you can only do this if the image you are basing it on is itself public domain or free-licensed, and you need to explicitly credit that image (e.g. using {{Derived from}}).
  • In general we are only interested in illustrations if either the artist in question is themself notable or if the illustration is of basically professional quality.
  • Do see COM:SIGN. - Jmabel ! talk 15:18, 3 May 2021 (UTC)

Replace image with a higher resolution version

When I try to replace a image with a higher resolution by click 'Upload a new version of this file' in the file History Section, I meet a issue said: Upload warning Copy uploads are not available from this domain.

How can I solve this issues, please? Thanks so much. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Lu Wan (talk • contribs) 20:49, 3 May 2021 (UTC)

@Lu Wan: , could you link to the file you are trying to replace? Are you using the same file format (e.g. .jpg., .png., .svg, Etc.) to replace the file? --Donald Trung 『徵國單』 (No Fake News 💬) (WikiProject Numismatics 💴) (Articles 📚) 20:54, 3 May 2021 (UTC)
@Donald Trung: , thanks so much for your reply. The original file is here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:ETOPIA_LOGO.png, and I am trying to replace it with this URL: http://www.etopia-itn.org/assets/images/etopia-full-color-black-1596x497.png. 131.175.28.195 13:43, 4 May 2021 (UTC)
@Lu Wan: Hi, and welcome. You were trying to upload via URL. That only works with approved domains. With that exact file, I got error 'File extension ".png" does not match the detected MIME type of the file (image/webp).' on my phone. Then, I ran it through the GIMP on my laptop, and overwrote with it. Then, I tried overwriting with the original file from that URL, and was pleasantly surprised it worked. (Atmalinga (talk) 14:15, 5 May 2021 (UTC)) Sir While giving the title, instead of R.V.Murthy, I wrote V.K.Murthy both were the stalwarts belonging to the Mysore association, Mumbai. Now, how to correct this sir ? Please help. This is my first photo upload. My sincere appologies.

@Atmalinga: Please sign at the end of your comments here, not the beginning.
You have more than one upload here. I presume this is about File:Shri. V.K.Murthy's book was released at The Mysore association, Mumbai.jpg.
You can edit the file page exactly the same way you are editing here.
There is no Category:Felicitation ceremony; you probably want Category:Commemorative ceremonies instead. Please try to use categories that already exist, when possible. Please also provide categories that relate to the place and date of the photograph. If the person depicted is notable enough to have a category of their own, use it; if not, use something like Category:Authors from India or something more specific if possible. - Jmabel ! talk 15:22, 5 May 2021 (UTC)
@Atmalinga: To rename, please ensure that the description is correct, and then use RenameLink or {{Rename}} and an Admin or File Mover will move the file to the correct name.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 16:54, 5 May 2021 (UTC)

Copyright help regarding File:Janitor Soyjak.jpg

This file is public domain as the creator cannot be identified. There is no one claiming to own this image, there is no one claiming to have a trademark or own copyright to this image. This image was created to be distributed freely.

--Pantshorse (talk) 05:12, 5 May 2021 (UTC)

I'm not fully sure about it, but just because something is not exactly claimed, does not mean it is not protected by copyright. --·×ald·es 07:29, 5 May 2021 (UTC)
  • Under the Berne Convention, images that are eligible for copyright are copyrighted at creation. There is no way a contemporary image like that is public domain. We'd need evidence of a free license. - Jmabel ! talk 15:26, 5 May 2021 (UTC)

Hi,

I am still waiting for official approval/permission, but i want to update https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Linux_Mint_Official_Logo.svg. This an old logo from 2007. It got changed in 2019 or 2020. But there was no logo+name, so i created one. I have it on my computer. You can also check it there: https://github.com/SebastJava/linuxmint-logo/blob/master/linuxmint-official-logo-filled-badge-name.svg

So, as i said, i am still waiting for some official feedback, but i wanted to see how this could be done. I have never uploaded or updated an image before on Wikimedia Commons. I have just created my account here today. And yes, i did read your introductory "First steps". So, i am looking at this File:Linux_Mint_Official_Logo.svg page, and there are lots of information displayed there, but i can't find an "upload/update" button. And there is this "You cannot overwrite this file." under File history. Does this means i can't update this logo!?

Thanks. — Preceding unsigned comment added by SebastJava (talk • contribs) 22:51, 5 May 2021 (UTC)

@SebastJava: Hi, and welcome. I'm sorry, but given the differences, COM:OW, and our restrictions on overwriting by new accounts, you will have to upload with a new filename. See also COM:SIGN.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 23:39, 5 May 2021 (UTC)

Offers to sell images embedded in author parameter

I was surprised to see the text "Do not copy this image illegally by ignoring the terms of the license below, as it is not in the public domain. If you would like special permission to use, license, or purchase the image please contact me to negotiate terms." attached to images displayed in the gallery of Modzurów on en-wiki. This strikes me as clearly advertising of services: contact me to buy this, more or less. It is coming from this user template. I saw something to the effect that some commercial advertising is allowed on commons (A notice such as "other terms/higher resolution available on request" are allowed. Contact details are allowed.), but in this case, the offer is showing up in a language wiki, which I have not seen before. I asked on en-wiki about this and it was suggested that it is would be better to ask here.Possibly (talk) 07:24, 4 May 2021 (UTC)

This is particularly bad to me, as it says "Do not copy this image illegally by ignoring the terms of the license below, as it is not in the public domain", but the image in question is free; just released under CC-BY-SA. Saying "I have higher quality versions" is much different from asking people to buy out this particular image, or request special permission which isn't necessary. Best Wishes, Lee Vilenski (talkcontribs) 07:36, 4 May 2021 (UTC)
I forgot to ping @Aktron: , the creator of the image above. Also, I can see now, having investigated it a bit, that the reason the offer to sell is showing up on en-wiki is that the user license template ({{User:Aktron/Author2}})is placed in the author parameter of {{Template:Information}}. Possibly (talk) 07:39, 4 May 2021 (UTC)
I have noted it. The text is 10 years old, I will change it so it will be in accordance with the CC BY-SA licence. Sorry for the mess. Aktron (talk) 08:19, 4 May 2021 (UTC)
Hi Aktron, Thanks for fixing that. I think it is also necessary to just use your username in the author parameter. You can move the user template to below the information template. If you leave it the away it is, you are injecting the offer to sell the image into every wiki page that the image appears on. I don;t think it is a normal situation to be able to have a custom user template displayed on a language wiki external to commons.Possibly (talk) 09:03, 4 May 2021 (UTC)
Abstracting slightly, it is reasonable for attribution (moral rights) to include the attribution text as the photographer/author prefers. In some cases this includes a link to the photographer's commercial website, where they may be selling their works. This is a perfectly good use of the moral rights requirements while not looking especially 'spammy' on the Commons image page. -- (talk) 09:25, 4 May 2021 (UTC)
FWIW, this is similar (though not identical) to my policy on my photos. If don't worry about the details of the CC-BY-SA license—as long as they attribute, I'm fine— but if they don't want to give attribution, I expect to get paid. Similarly, if they need me to fill out any paperwork, I expect to get paid. - Jmabel ! talk 15:16, 4 May 2021 (UTC)
The text of the template is a little disturbing, as it implies that copying needs permission. But that is not what brought me here. The fact that commons users can create these user templates offering to sell images is OK, on Commons. When these offers to do business are visible in en-WP or other language articles, without visiting commons, that does not seem right. It seems to be a misuse of the author parameter. For example, the page linked to above now has no author, and en-wiki users will just see I would appreciate being notified if you use my work outside Wikimedia. More of my work can be found in my personal gallery. - Own work" I am pretty sure that author parameter is not intended as a place to advertise. Possibly (talk) 07:46, 5 May 2021 (UTC)
I do not find anything objectionable in the text, including in the part now removed by the user. It is a correct and fair statement. It is not an advertisement or an obligation of permission. Perhaps you do not have extensive personal experience with your photos being abusively reused. Everything in that text are basic principles that should be obvious and go without saying for everybody who knows the licenses. But, from observations based on my photos, about 80% of reusers outside of Wikimedia do not respect the licenses, probably either by ignorance or because they don't bother to read the licenses or because they actually want to use the photo without having to comply with the requirements of the license. So, some people need to be reminded, well in evidence, of the fact that the file is licensed and of one of the most essential principles of the licenses, which is that either they must respect the requirements or, if they want to be exempted from some requirement, they must ask, they cannot unilaterally use the photo and ignore the license. The user is simply spoon-feeding that information for people who need it. It doesn't change anything for people who already know it. And it can be useful for people who didn't know it. It is entirely acceptable. Even, it contributes to educate people about the nature and the proper usage of licenses and the best practices. However, I think you are correct on a technical point. The complex layout of that "user template" apparently causes the system to skip parts of it when it is displayed through the particular "media viewer" interface. It might be a good idea for the user to remove the fancy layout stuff and to focus on the essential, the message. IMHO. -- Asclepias (talk) 12:37, 5 May 2021 (UTC)
@Asclepias: It's gone now, but "please contact me to negotiate terms" was an extremely clear offer to do business. Such offers aren't allowed on En-wiki. That offer has been removed, but as it is now, with the user template allowed in the author parameter, the EN-wiki reader doesn't even see the author name when they click on that image, because the custom template has messed it up. It seems pretty clear that he use of the custom template in the author parameter of template:information causes problems-- at least in the two examples provided here... VOA licensing on some pictures

Image from Flickr.

Good day,
I came across a Wikipedia page with no Image (WCW Wrestler & Valet Kimberly Page).

I have Located an image of hers on Flickr, It is marked as being in public domain. But, I have reservations.
Could someone please confirm if the image is OK to upload ??

"Kimberly PAge WCW 2000" by (Aaron) SMELTZER Photography is marked with CC PDM 1.0
The image : | Kimberly PAge WCW 2000

SierraTangoCharlie1 (talk) 03:52, 6 May 2021 (UTC)

  • @SierraTangoCharlie1: The "public domain mark" on Flickr is just an assertion that the image is in the public domain. In this case, I see no reason to believe it is an accurate assertion. We would need to know the rationale for the image being in the public domain. - Jmabel ! talk 05:53, 6 May 2021 (UTC)
@SierraTangoCharlie1: The Flickr uploader or Commons uploader must explain exactly how the photo has gotten into the public domain, as PDM is not a license. Please read COM:FLICKR and COM:L carefully.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 06:55, 6 May 2021 (UTC)

Sigh..I knew that image didn't look like public domain.
But I was secretly hoping to find an image for her wiki page.
Thank you for your guidance. can I write to some folk who have uploaded fan images with Kimberly (like at conventions) to change license of their uploads from © to CC-BY? Will that be a legal way do it? SierraTangoCharlie1 (talk) 11:14, 6 May 2021 (UTC)

@SierraTangoCharlie1: Yes, that would be legal; more legal still would be to add {{Personality}} to any result.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 11:42, 6 May 2021 (UTC)

Got it.

File names

Hi all. File:Self Portrait №3 Leonardo da Vinci.jpg and File:Leonardo da Vinci, Self Portrait №2.JPG are certainly not self portraits by Leonardo da Vinci (he does not have any, except File:Leonardo da Vinci - presumed self-portrait - WGA12798.jpg, which remains a bit controversial anyways). I've removed their description as such and added them to Category:Unidentified paintings, but I am unsure what to do about their file names as they are doubtlessly misleading. Would someone mind moving them to something appropriate, or advising me on how to do so? I'm unsure if something like "Portrait of a young man with a red hat" would be satisfactory or not. Are maps from the 1930's copyrighted?

I want to photograph and upload an old map, which was drawn in the 1930's for the British government.

The map is about 90 years old, is that enough to be considered public domain? If not - what should I do?

Increase thumbnail size in categories?

Hi, I would like to increase the size of thumbnail images in categories to more easily identify what the image actually is. I have tried changing the thumbnail size in my preferences/appearance tab and also changed it in my global preferences, I am seeing no effect either way (bigger/smaller), I am also purging after these changes. Perhaps it can't be done and I need to zoom in with my browser? Cheers Nimbus227 (talk) 21:05, 15 May 2021 (UTC)

Try enabling the LargerGallery gadget in your preferences. It gives the following features when viewing a category of images:
  • Zooming an image when hovering over it
  • A pulldown to change the scaling for all the cat images
  • A user-pref for changing the default scaling

A problem is that if I code them in wikitext, they will be targeted by a bot and removed within the week because they won't (yet) be approved copyright templates. So I need to upload screenshots. I only need 3-4 weeks for others to comment; then there will be no need to have them on Commons. Is there a way, at the time of upload, to nominate an image for deletion, e.g. in 4 weeks? Or another solution? Advice appreciated. Cheers, Simon – SCHolar44 🇦🇺 💬 at 11:21, 9 May 2021 (UTC)

Propose "deletion request" replacing the bot tags. (You must always come with a valid argument though.) While they are being discussed, the files will normally not be deleted, and the bots will leave them in peace. Probably the discussions will not take so long, either; and the admins closing the DR(s) will keep or delete your files in less than 3-4 weeks. I hope this helps. --E4024 (talk) 13:44, 9 May 2021 (UTC)
Files are not normally uploaded only to be deleted but, if you can justify it, you can request a speedy deletion of the files when you're done. It's not automatic but if the files really have no usefullness, the deletion will probably occur. Do you expect that someone might object to the deletions? And, hypothetically, would it pose a problem if the files are kept? However, I don't understand why you say you can't write your examples in text. By "copyright notices", do you mean just credit lines or full licenses? If you only want users to comment on your proposals, you don't need to make them as templates. Or even if you make them as "user templates" in your userspace, why would that be a problem? If it's because you want to upload new images licensed only with your proposed tags, and you absolutely refuse to offer those images under an existing license tag, how would screenshots avoid the problem? Screenshots, including all their contents, must have a valid free license tag anyway. Alternatively, in the millions of files on Commons, isn't it possible to find one file you can refer to as an example and ask users "what if this file had been offered with my text?" -- Asclepias (talk) 14:30, 9 May 2021 (UTC)

Cobble? Pebble?

When I add categories to images I don't know whether to choose to Category:Cobble beaches or Category:Pebble beaches? For example, take a look at and . There is not much difference between "Cobble beach" and "Pebble beach" so that it is difficult for me to distinguish subtle changes between them.--Kai3952 (talk) 01:03, 10 May 2021 (UTC)

Image not display on vi.wikipedia.org

This image https://vi.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tập_tin:Female_sexual_arousal.JPG doesn't display in vi.wikipedia.org at the section of the page vi:Môi âm hộ#Hưng phấn tình dục và phản ứng, I'm using this syntax [[Tập tin:Female_sexual_arousal.JPG|phải|nhỏ|250x250px|Mô tả ảnh ở đây .]] although other images display well. Can anyone help me? BabesLooker (talk) 16:26, 9 May 2021 (UTC)

@Jmabel: Sorry, I know this is a NSFW image and I don't want any prejudices here. Can you please tell me how you can make it show correctly (with me it's not possible in this section vi:Môi âm hộ#Hưng phấn tình dục và phản ứng)? BabesLooker (talk) 02:31, 10 May 2021 (UTC)
    • I don't know what else to say. It looks correct when I access it. I suspect any issue is on your machine rather than on the server; it is possible of course that it is being blocked somewhere between, but if the other images on that page show correctly then that would be unlikely. - Jmabel ! talk 05:42, 10 May 2021 (UTC)

Apparently spurious error message

For operational reasons at my end, sometimes I upload a sequence of different pictures that have the same placeholder filename on my PC, let's say "z.jpg", and then of course I give them different meaningful names on the Wiki. When I upload second and subsequent "z.jpg" files, I get an error message:

There was an error in your submission
You are already uploading the file "z.JPG".

whereas in fact the previous upload completed successfully. Despite this message, the new upload does in fact appear to work, so the error message can apparently be ignored. If, on the other hand, anyone can see any hidden issues with my file uploads that are related to this message, please let me know. ITookSomePhotos (talk) 17:52, 9 May 2021 (UTC)

FWIW, you say sometimes... but I see you have only 14 uploaded images here on Commons. - Jmabel ! talk 18:11, 9 May 2021 (UTC)
What do you mean by "already in use"? In use where and by what? ITookSomePhotos (talk) 19:04, 9 May 2021 (UTC)
Nobody can tell you if or where a filename is used if you don't tell what that filename is. When you prepare the upload, if the filename on your PC gets temporarily listed as the proposed filename and if a file already exits on Commons with the same name or if the filename is forbidden on Commons, at this point the system warns you. Of course, lots of files have been uploaded with very short and common filenames or with filenames that are used by default by software, such as img [number] or dsc [number], etc., by users who did not change it to a more significant filename. If your temporary filename is relatively common, there is a good chance that in the millions of files on Commons, there's one with that filename. Did you check? The warning message tells the user that the proposed filename is already in use. The user normally changes it anyway. But if the user forgets to change a proposed filename that is already in use, the message warns the user. Some filenames may even have been forbidden for being really too simple or common. File:Z.jpg and File:z.jpg are exactly examples of such forbidden filenames. That's probably the case also for other similar filenames. You can check. -- Asclepias (talk) 22:23, 9 May 2021 (UTC)
Yes, the system tells you if a filename is forbidden or already used on Commons, but that is a different type of message that is issued at the next stage, on the page where the Wiki filename is chosen. The message that I am talking about comes up prior to this, in a floating box during the first upload stage. It does not come up every time I upload "z.jpg", but only, seemingly, when I have "recently" uploaded a file of the same name. Also, I can upload any filename on my PC that already exists on Wiki without getting the message that I am talking about. Therefore it seems that the temporary filename or forbidden filename explanations do not hold up. The only reason that the uploader should be getting any message in the circumstances that I refer to is, at most, to warn them that they may be mistakenly uploading the same file again. In fact, the message that I see is not presented as a warning, but reads like a fatal error, and the tense "you are already uploading" is plainly incorrect when the previous upload has already completed. I think that the message is either misworded or wrongly/misleadingly triggered. E.g. maybe internal cleanup is not completed properly after upload has apparently fully completed, or there is some background process that continues, causing Wiki to still think that "you are already uploading" when as far as the user is concerned this is not the case. — Preceding unsigned comment added by ITookSomePhotos (talk • contribs) 19:21, 10 May 2021 (UTC)
Ok, then it's not what I thought it was. Your description is precise and your hypotheses sound plausible, i.e. the message could be to warn users against mistakingly uploading duplicates and the system may need some time to adjust to completed uploads. -- Asclepias (talk) 22:07, 10 May 2021 (UTC)

How to close a Commons:Categories for discussion

Is the software for your image gallery page openly available?

Hi there,

I love the user interface for the image galleries eg https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?search=Cichorium+intybus&title=Special:MediaSearch&go=Go&type=image

Is the software/widget used to create this open source and available to use for other projects? I'm putting together a bespoke gallery of UK native wild flowers.

many thanks, Jake

image licences

I used two family-supplied images of their deceased relatives that look to have been taken in studios c. 1930-40. Both families are happy indeed keen for these photos to be used. There appears no way to gain a licence from the name of a long defunct photographers studio or by bothering the families. Other wiki editors seem pre-occupied with enforcing removal of these photos, pointlessly impoverishing the article. Any suggestions? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Philip Sugarman (talk • contribs) 14:40, 10 May 2021 (UTC)

How to categorize pictograms on images of computers and other information/communication devices?

I have worked with some images with pictograms/icons/symbols thereon, see below. I wanted to categorize them, but even after an elaborate search I did not find categories which seem to make sense for them. What comes closest is Category:Interface icons, where I put the laptop interface pic below and some related ones, but the category seems to be rather for the raw symbols, meaning, as SVG. Any advice? Pittigrilli (talk) 10:57, 4 May 2021 (UTC)

The question slowly fades into forgottenness... Hello men and women of Commons, the question is neither stupid nor impossible to answer... Pittigrilli (talk) 07:45, 5 May 2021 (UTC)
  • Your complaint comes less than 24 hours after your original posting. We allow a week here for questions to be answered. If you are so unhappy that no one else happens to know the answer off the top of their head either, perhaps you should simply create an appropriate category, which can always be merged later if it turns out to be redundant. - Jmabel ! talk 15:13, 5 May 2021 (UTC)
@Pittigrilli: How about Category:Interface icons on hardware?   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 17:08, 5 May 2021 (UTC)

Please check my solution, this is a bit more significant than I intended: I created in the top category Category:Icons the new Category:Icons by use case. In this, I created Category:Icons on audio equipment and Category:Icons on computer and networking equipment with one example each, for a start. The term "interface icons" would have been too narrow. Pittigrilli (talk) 18:54, 5 May 2021 (UTC)
@Jeff G.: Alternative: Instead of the quite abstract "Icons by use case", "Icons on things" might be better understandable for the international reader. Pittigrilli (talk) 11:56, 6 May 2021 (UTC)
@Pittigrilli: "Analog icons"? I'm thinking of the icons of the play, stop, fast forward, and rewind buttons on cassette tape recorders from the mid-20th Century.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 12:31, 6 May 2021 (UTC)
@Jeff G.: Exactly that is already covered by my category Category:Icons on audio equipment (see above) and the only example of an end-70s tape deck stop/eject-button, which was inside before you wrote the above ;-) Pittigrilli (talk) 12:37, 6 May 2021 (UTC)
@Jeff G.: I changed to "Pictograms", as it is the correct term, not icons. There is plenty of them now in Category:Pictograms on things. Pittigrilli (talk) 09:15, 11 May 2021 (UTC)

Images from Flickr in public domain

Hello, could someone help me with some images in Flickr for COVID-19 vaccination in Moldova? They are from the Parliament of Moldova, which has left them on public domain, but the Upload page says I can't transfer images from that Flickr account. The images I am interested in are the following: [2], [3], [4]. Thank you. Super Dromaeosaurus (talk) 21:30, 9 May 2021 (UTC)

@Super Dromaeosaurus: This flickr account has been offering as "public domain mark" too many photos that the photographer says are "all rights reserved" to the photographer. The flickr account must have been blacklisted to avoid more problems. -- Asclepias (talk) 21:49, 9 May 2021 (UTC)
Ah, okay. I assume they can't be uploaded then. Thanks for the help. Super Dromaeosaurus (talk) 08:53, 10 May 2021 (UTC)
@Super Dromaeosaurus: photographer says are "all rights reserved" to the photographer. in about i did not find anything. can you please disclose where should i look? Gi vi an (talk) 10:07, 10 May 2021 (UTC)
I already linked the three photos I said I'd like to upload: [5], [6], [7]. I don't know where else could one search, I have never used Flickr before. Super Dromaeosaurus (talk) 10:15, 10 May 2021 (UTC)
If you know the photos have valid public domain status, you can download them from Flickr to your own machine and upload them here, taking the same responsibility for describing and licensing as you would, for example, if you had received them in an email. Use the "permission" field of the "information" template to explain more than a PD tag can, if needed. Probably easier to use Special:Upload and fill everything out yourself than to do this with a Wizard. - Jmabel ! talk 15:09, 10 May 2021 (UTC)
The blacklisting is not specifically related to those three particular images. The questioner asked why an upload tool says that images from the flickr account cannot be uploaded with that tool. The answer is because the flickr account is blacklisted and the reason for the blacklisting is because of the general behaviour of the account who was found to have posted many suspect files and therefore the whole account cannot be trusted. See the page Commons:Questionable Flickr images and the short summary for the blacklisting of this account: "Many screenshots of other's YouTube videos, etc. There are some likely own works mixed in, but they should be reviewed carefully." That can happen if the flickr account is managed by a person who doesn't know or doesn't explain what they're doing in relation with copyright. One clue is the use of PD-mark without explanation. Of course, you will not find on the "about" page of the problematic account a statement saying "we know that we are making mistakes" or "we know that we are tagging many files carelessly or in contradiction with the author's explicit notice of copyright and we don't know why we do that or we don't tell". There are examples in deletion requests about that account. -- Asclepias (talk) 17:13, 10 May 2021 (UTC)
Should I then not upload them? Super Dromaeosaurus (talk) 20:27, 10 May 2021 (UTC)
@Super Dromaeosaurus: Please see my remark above. The operative phrase there is "If you know the photos have valid public domain status". - Jmabel ! talk 00:38, 11 May 2021 (UTC)
I guess they do. I've uploaded one [8]. I won't upload more for now because I'm still kind of confused. Super Dromaeosaurus (talk) 19:45, 11 May 2021 (UTC)

Posting of Foto

I have posted a photograph of the fiddler presented in the page Spel-Fredrik. The photographer, whose name we do not know, was a wedding guest in 1917 and the photo was given to the family. Later it was shared with the local history club, in Brekken, Norway, and the club has shared with me. This is what I can say about my source. As far as I know the photo has not been copyrighted. It is over 100 years old. The photographer is unknown. What is the proper way to present the photo here? Is there a language issue? The page is in Norwegian, we are in English here! Sa far as I can see, I have posted the source info that I have for the photo. Can you please help me understand what is at issue? What must I change or add?

It is a great photo of Ljunggren at work, late in his life and I would like to share it here. Mary — Preceding unsigned comment was added by 2A02:2121:2CF:55CE:148A:57F9:291B:1DB (talk) 10:45, 10 May 2021 (UTC)

I hate to say it, but 1914 is a bit recent to presume the work is out of copyright. Let's say the photographer was 25 years old and lived to 75. Then it would be 2034 until the photographer had been dead 70 years (I believe that's the relevant number for Norway, but I'm open to correction), and the image would become public domain in 2035. 40 more years of life is hardly an extreme case.
We allow {{PD-assumed}} for work over 120 years old where the photographer cannot be identified, but this is only 107 years old. - Jmabel ! talk 15:14, 10 May 2021 (UTC)
If this photo is not considered "a work of art" then {{PD-Norway50}} will apply but there may be a problem with USA copyright if the photo was first published after 1978. Ruslik (talk) 20:18, 11 May 2021 (UTC)

How do I give a copyright attribution to something in the public domain?

--Someramoth (talk) 03:14, 12 May 2021 (UTC)

@Someramoth: are you certain that the file is in the public domain? While it may well be, the year when the photograph was taken would be needed. If the photo was taken before 1926 then you can use {{PD-anon-expired}}. MKFI (talk) 12:12, 12 May 2021 (UTC)
"11 May 2021" is certainly wrong for the date. At the very least you can say {{before|1971}} but I imagine that in an scenario where you can prove it is public domain you can say something a lot stronger. Also, assuming this is salvageable, you should add a category or categories related to it being a black-and-white portrait photograph of a sitting woman, etc.- Jmabel ! talk 13:48, 12 May 2021 (UTC)

I'm assuming this is regarding Italy? Unfortunately, in Italy, freedom of panorama does not exist, see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Freedom_of_panorama#Italy This means that to legally publish any picture of a building in Italy, you need permission from the Architect. Also you took some photos of pictures from Giulio Falzoni who only died in 1978 so you need permission from the heirs to take a picture of his paintings. --Taktaal (talk) 12:20, 12 May 2021 (UTC)

Can't upload a file although I am the owner

Hello! I was trying to upload a file (a portrait of a person), but the system would not let me. The company for which I am trying to upload the file owns all the rights and wants to publish it according to Wikipedia's licensing terms (as there is an old photo of this person already published on Wikipedia and they want a more recent one). The error message I received made clear, that it could not be determined whether the image I was trying to upload was suited for Wikimedia Commons:

"Wir konnten nicht feststellen, ob diese Datei für Wikimedia Commons geeignet ist. Bitte nur Fotos hochladen, die Du selbst mit Deiner Kamera aufgenommen hast, oder lies, was sonst noch akzeptabel ist. Siehe den Leitfaden um sicherzustellen, dass die Datei akzeptabel ist, und lerne, wie man sie auf Wikimedia Commons hochlädt."

After trying for several times I got this error message:

"Diese Aktion wurde automatisch als schädlich erkannt und deshalb nicht ausgeführt. Wenn du denkst, dass deine Aktion konstruktiv war, wende dich bitte an einen Administrator und schildere ihm, was du versucht hast beizutragen. Kurzbeschreibung der verletzten Regel: Cross-wiki upload filter"

Could anyone help and tell me, why it won't let me upload the file? And how can I adjust it to make the upload work?

Thanks in advance and best wishes! — Preceding unsigned comment added by OperGraz (talk • contribs) 09:05, 12 May 2021 (UTC)

If you took the photo yourself, please upload the full-size original of it per COM:HR, including EXIF metadata. If you did not take the photo, please see Commons:Licensing for why we can't accept it, and have the photographer post Commons:Licensing compliant permission for such work on their official website or social media presence or send the photo and permission via OTRS with a carbon copy to you. If you can't get a compliant license, the photo may still be uploaded to English Wikipedia in compliance with en:WP:F because we don't allow Fair Use here. Which is to say: once a file is updated, we never modify the actual file. It is saved as a version, just like we save each version of an article in Wikipedia. The only way you change it is to upload a new version to overwrite it. - Jmabel ! talk 06:13, 14 May 2021 (UTC)

Error uploading image

I'm trying to upload a photo of myself for my wiki, and I'm continuing to get an error message stating that it can't be determined if the photo is suitable. Please advise. The video is of myself, taken by myself with my phone. — Preceding unsigned comment added by SorenStauss (talk • contribs) 22:27, 12 May 2021 (UTC)

  • @SorenStauss: I'm guessing that you are doing some sort of cross-wiki upload. Try uploading directly here on Commons (either Special:UploadWizard or Special:Upload).
  • When you say "my wiki", I assume you mean a Wikipedia article about yourself. Do remember that copyright on a photo normally belongs to the photographer, not the subject. If you are uploading a photo of yourself that is not a self-portrait, remember that you will need to provide evidence of an appropriate free license from the copyright-holder. If you don't understand that last remark, please say so here and I will clarify: there is no point uploading something that will rapidly be deleted. - Jmabel ! talk 23:26, 12 May 2021 (UTC)
@Jmabel: As I stated in my original post, the photo was taken of me and by me with my phone. It was a selfie. This means that I am both the photographer as well as the subject. — Preceding unsigned comment added by SorenStauss (talk • contribs) 02:06, 13 May 2021 (UTC)
@SorenStauss: Hi, and welcome. I am sorry to inform you that you have triggered Special:AbuseFilter/153 by trying to cross-wiki upload a smaller (<50,000 bytes or <2,000,000 pixels) jpg photo as a new user while leaving the summary intact. The photo you tried to upload is smaller, and you indicated it's your own work. Usually when someone uploads a smaller photo, it is a copyright violation taken from the web. If you change the summary or use our Upload Wizard instead, you should be able to avoid that filter.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 03:04, 13 May 2021 (UTC)
  • @Jeff G.: That's the dumbest think I've ever heard. It's a bit like law enforcement telling people they can't drive a car that matches the characteristic of automobiles that been known to be stolen. "The car might be yours, but it has custom rims which are frequently stolen. Come back with a more typical car and then we'll allow you to drive it." People customize their photos (re-size, crop, filter, etc) for various reasons; it is typical that most websites require image uploads to be UNDER a certain file size, and so it's common practice to shrink photo sizes for just this purpose. This is an overreach. — Preceding unsigned comment added by SorenStauss (talk • contribs) 12:58, 13 May 2021 (UTC)
@SorenStauss: Sorry, but this isn't like most websites. See also COM:SIGN, COM:TALK, and COM:SELFIE.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 13:14, 13 May 2021 (UTC)
Really, it's not that useful to tell us that you'd like us to be more like things that we are deliberately quite unlike. Most sites don't intend to be references, or repositories for reuse. Most sites play fast and loose with copyright, trying to get away with whatever they can (a perfectly reasonable policy, I certainly follow it on my personal site) rather than to give re-users evidence and confidence that the images have been vetted. And, again, it's not just the nature of the image that was suspect, it was the nature of the image plus the cross-wiki upload. It's not just "cars like this are often stolen." It's more like "cars like this are often stolen, and you are wearing the same hat as the last three guys we caught stealing one." - Jmabel ! talk 06:21, 14 May 2021 (UTC)

@Inry: "Photo licensed CC-BY-SA-4.0" (or a less restrictive license) would do. Then you could put {{CC-BY-SA-4.0}} in the licensing section with a link to that public declaration.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 14:40, 14 May 2021 (UTC)

Hi, I have drawn a picture that I want added to my user page. It is a drawing of the Solar System. I am wondering if I can upload it to my user page without any trouble? Thanks!

@Wyntrii: Hi, and welcome. What is the basis for the drawing? How many planets did you include?   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 00:46, 14 May 2021 (UTC)
@Jeff G.: Eight... or nine if you think of Pluto as a planet... or ten if you can see Planet 9.

Wyntrii (talk) 17:46, 14 May 2021 (UTC)

@Jeff G.: I don't think that's really at issue. If it's basically an original drawing and the intent is for their own user page, we allow quite a bit of latitude. Image does still have to be free-licensed, though. - Jmabel ! talk 06:25, 14 May 2021 (UTC)

Is there a page for international "photo wishes"?

Do we have a page where people can post that they would like to have a picture of a precisely defined (or very broadly defined) subject made? I.e., "I would like to have a picture on Commons of a certain exhibit in the museum of modern art in New York City" or of the "Victoria falls from below" or of an "xyz helicopter type"? If not, would that not be a great page to have? Local Wikimedians (or anyone, if an abstract theme/subject) could then do the job if they like. Pittigrilli (talk) 11:05, 14 May 2021 (UTC)

Can I remove geolocation data from distinct ones of my own uploads?

Situation: As time went by, I uploaded more and more pics which I took of items in my apartment (such as stereo equipment) with my iPhone. Though I mostly took care that the GPS function was off, quite a number of the pics do have GPS info in them. I didn't care for a while, but now I realized that there is a bunch of pics (from same uploader of course) viewable in/around my house on the various map tools. While I do live in a house with more than 8 appartments, this is not particularly bad, still I don't like it too much. Any option how I can remove the "camera position" manually from those pics and block that some bot will reinsert them in the future? I wouldn't care that the GPS is still in the EXIF image details. Pittigrilli (talk) 11:34, 14 May 2021 (UTC)

@Pittigrilli: Hi. I am sorry, but you must remove the GPS data from the wikitext and SDC for each applicable photo (and add {{Location withheld}} per bjh21 below). If a bot replaces it, then you must remove the GPS metadata from each applicable photo on your computer/device and overwrite your original photo here on Wikimedia Commons with the new version, then try again.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 14:11, 14 May 2021 (UTC)
(Edit conflict) @Pittigrilli: I would hope that any bot adding locations would honour {{Location withheld}}, so you should be able to remove any {{Location}} template and replace it with {{Location withheld}} to get the effect you want. There may also be some location properties in the structured data for each file: that's on a separate tab on the file page. Once you've done that, you can request revision deletion or oversight of the old versions of the file page that contain the co-ordinates. --bjh21 (talk) 14:16, 14 May 2021 (UTC)
@Jeff G.: That is good, it is not more than about 10 pics. Just for my understanding: If I do overload a first image version (incl. GPS) with a new version (with del. GPS), is the first version kind of hidden for bots or do they still look inside those first versions (even despite the 'Location withheld' label) ? Pittigrilli (talk) 15:43, 14 May 2021 (UTC)

Hi, and welcome. From what I have seen of two of your other photos, it is probably a composite. Traditional song uploading

Hi. There is an Arabic article about traditional songs in weddings. I'd like to upload mp3 file for one of the songs. It's traditional and no one know who sang it or wrote it. Will there be any copyright issues if I upload it? Thanks. — Preceding unsigned comment added by GhadaMKH (talk • contribs) 15:30, 14 May 2021 (UTC)

Music copyright has two parts. The copyright to the song itself, which belongs to who wrote it, and which isn't a problem for folk songs that are hundreds of years old. But there's also the copyright to the performance, which belongs to the singer/musician. So unless this is a very old recording (from a musician that died before 1950) you need permission from the artists who performed it too. --Taktaal (talk) 20:38, 14 May 2021 (UTC)

Uploading screenshots

A screenshot of a picture has the same copyrights as the picture itself. If someone spent work on that diagram, he owns the copyright to it and you need his permission to make a screenshot and put it on Wikimedia Commons --Taktaal (talk) 20:35, 14 May 2021 (UTC)

Nametags - watermark or not ?

Good Day, I came across this image here File:Bergamo - Il centro (18598).jpg. It has been tagged with Template:Watermark. my question is - the image doesn't have any identification of artist or timestamp as it's watermark. all it has is a nametag identifying it's location. shouldn't this be retained and not removed like a timestamp or artist's name watermark? and then tagged with Template:Dont remove watermark

SierraTangoCharlie1 (talk) 18:26, 14 May 2021 (UTC)

@SierraTangoCharlie1: I suspect the template is referring to the "?UP069" diagonally across the middle of the image. --bjh21 (talk) 19:22, 14 May 2021 (UTC)
@Bjh21: ohhh.. ok. i'll try removing that and reuploading. thank you for your assistance. SierraTangoCharlie1 (talk) 19:43, 14 May 2021 (UTC)
@Bjh21: :- Good day once again, I have removed the concerning WATERMARK DIGITALLY & uploaded new version, is it ok now to remove the Template:Watermark & replace it with the Template:Dont remove watermark to protect the nametag at the bottom ?? Thank you in advance. SierraTangoCharlie1 (talk) 22:15, 14 May 2021 (UTC)
@SierraTangoCharlie1: Well done! I think changing the template would be reasonable if you think the caption should be preserved. If someone disagrees they can always upload the de-captioned version under a different name. --bjh21 (talk) 22:36, 14 May 2021 (UTC)

Editing clients Wikipedia pages

I'm trying to edit and update some of my clients Wikipedia pages and keep getting flagged for Copyright. I have access to all the company's image assets but Wikipedia is not letting me upload it because it's "not my work". Can you please help? I'm new to editing on Wikipedia and need some direction.

Thanks — Preceding unsigned comment added by BlakeWilliams85 (talk • contribs) 18:28, 14 May 2021 (UTC)

BlakeWilliams85: First you need to be fully aware and comply with your w:Wikipedia:Conflict of interest otherwise you will be in trouble and may get blocked from editing. Of course, if the images are clearly not your own work, they will be tagged for copyright infringement. Only the copyright holder, who is usually the photographer, must release the images under a free licence that we accept, unless the copyright was transferred by legal means. They can produce a permission statement by using the template found on this page: Commons:Email templates/Consent or another way of producing a permission statement is through the Wikimedia Permission Release Generator, that can be accessed from the blue button at the top of the lined page.
This tool will guide them through the process of creating a release statement which we will be able to readily accept, and is the preferred method of releasing the rights to their media for use on Wikimedia projects such as Wikipedia in all languages. Ww2censor (talk) 22:11, 14 May 2021 (UTC)

  • @Gi vi an: "Personality rights warning" and "OTRS" definitely can both exist on the same file. In theory, we could add a "personality rights warning" to every picture of a living person or one whose lifetime was within living memory (unless, of course, there is a comprehensive model release). In practice, we only do so where it seems likely that the issue might arise. Only thing OTRS has to do with that is that if we were to receive a comprehensive model release, that's how it would probably arrive. - Jmabel ! talk 15:24, 22 May 2021 (UTC)

wrong photo

The photo used on https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Luitenant-kolonel_Tede_Beets_(1880-1958),_ca._1941.png?uselang=nl is not correct. This photo depicts my father, who was born in 1908 and was a 1st Lieutenant as a POW at Colditz. His name also was Tede Beets after his father mentioned below.

The photo that should be used together with this article is: https://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tede_Beets#/media/Bestand:Portret-TedeBeets1880-1958.jpg who was born in 1880 and died in 1958. And he is the one that is mentioned in the story of above mentioned page.

I would appreciate if this error was corrected.

My grandfather photographed the construction of the Wellington dam in the 1930s. I have the negatives in my custody, but intend to donate them to the State Library of WA. Licensing of self-taken pictures at sports competition venues

I have a question about the licensing of photos taken at live sport events like figure skating competitions. A fellow photographer told me that the International Skating Union or local host often writes on their website that taking photos in the arena is permitted, but only for private purposes, not commercial usage. Does that mean, it's not allowed to upload self-taken pictures from competitions on Wiki Commons? Thank you very much in advance! Henni147 (talk) 11:53, 19 May 2021 (UTC)

I received explicit permission from the user called 'Phantom Kabocha' to edit and upload any photo from this archive of figure skating pictures under CC-BY 4.0 license. Hi,

I have tried to fix the info on my page several times in the last week as I am starting a new job and wanting the info to be correct and each time I do it it reverts to the old false information.

How can I ensure that the edits to my page remain permanently?

Two immediate changes are important. Both Personal Life and Filmography sections are false. Can you please delete them.

Also, a number of the Basic Info about me, my education and Film Career sections, are false. How can I make a permanent changes? Even my picture is not me.

I want my page to be accurate, please.

Thanks very much.

Questions about authorship of pictures I took or pictures of which I personally own the original

Hello Somebody has made remarks about pictures I used on pages I made stating that "Source of derivative work is not properly indicated". How can I make sure that the pictures are not deleted as mentioned? I have no idea how I can fix this. I absolutely declare that I have made the pictures myself or I own the original picture and thus own the copyright. Thank you. Eddy De Munter — Preceding unsigned comment added by Eddydemunter (talk • contribs) 20:11, 16 May 2021 (UTC)

Are you claiming that you made this picture yourself? How old are you in this case? Mere ownership of the original does not confer the copyright. Ruslik (talk) 20:43, 16 May 2021 (UTC)

Help with Wikimedia OTRS release generator step 4

https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:%22Music_in_Monk_Time%22_Foreign_Distribution_Poster.jpg

My name is Stephen Rice. I am the producer and co-writer of the movie. "Music in Monk Time", made 38 years ago. I am trying to create a Wikipedia entry for this movie. I am currently attempting to upload the foreign market poster, created and used by our distributor, Devillier-Donegan Enterprises. This business was closed over 20 years ago and there is no website to link. I have our contract with DDE, as well as sales receipts. I could email those as verification of our relationship but I don't wish to upload them. My partner and I hold the copyright for this movie and the poster was created for its sales. Please inform me as how to proceed. Thank you. Thedevoutcatalyst (talk) 15:15, 14 May 2021 (UTC)

  • @Thedevoutcatalyst: The English-language Wikipedia's policy on conflicts of interest would suggest strongly that you are not the person to write a Wikipedia article about a movie you produced.
  • If you don't own the copyright on the poster you want to upload, it really is neither here nor there that you own the copyright on related materials.
  • Commons would be glad to have the poster if we can get a license from the current holder of its copyright. Probably you'd need to contact the OTRS team to sort out the issues about who is giving permission. I suspect this will involve more of a dialogue than you can handle through the release generator. But unfortunately if the work is "orphaned" and no one can find the copyright-holder to get permission, then our precautionary principle says we cannot accept that, and anyone who used the image would be in danger of the copyright-holder appearing and suing them.
  • Failing the ability to clear rights, it is possible to upload non-free images to the English-language Wikipedia itself for use in an article. Commons is not involved in that: Commons hosts only free-licensed an public domain images. See en:Wikipedia:Non-free content. - Jmabel ! talk 15:26, 15 May 2021 (UTC)

One of the co-owners of Devillier-Donegan Enterprises, Ron Devillier is still very much alive. I just emailed him about our film. What is necessary to give his permission as the creator of the poster in service of distributing my film? Thank you. Thedevoutcatalyst (talk) 22:10, 15 May 2021 (UTC)

  • @Thedevoutcatalyst: I would say that that at this point it is probably best to start an email correspondence with the OTRS team (email address is at COM:OTRS) with him included on the same thread. He can clarify what license he is willing to grant. I usually recommend granting a {{Cc-by-sa-4.0}}, which means people are required to credit him for his work but can use the image freely. - Jmabel ! talk 22:35, 15 May 2021 (UTC)

Thank you for your suggestions. Just been informed that only in rare occasions are there ever more than one poster for an encyclopedia article. I am no longer pursuing this image's inclusion. Thank you. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Thedevoutcatalyst (talk • contribs) 01:13, 16 May 2021 (UTC)

I would appreciate your removing this and all other posters as soon as possible. Thank you, Thedevoutcatalyst (talk) 17:30, 17 May 2021 (UTC)

@Jmabel: , I am an English Wikipedia editor and administrator and I have assisted Thedevoutcatalyst to write an article about this clearly notable film. Thedevoutcatalyst did not read the fine print when uploading the images. I think the best outcome is to delete the three images from Commons and I will then upload one of the posters locally on Wikipedia under that project's policy on use of non-free images. Cullen328 (talk) 17:50, 17 May 2021 (UTC)
@Cullen328, Thedevoutcatalyst, and Jmabel: I initiated the process by creating Commons:Deletion requests/Files uploaded by Thedevoutcatalyst.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 00:42, 18 May 2021 (UTC)

Hello Jeff - I just tried to "ping" and click on your user name, but both places where I landed made no sense. I did not understand the implications of uploading to Wikimedia Commons, nor should I have been loading multiple posters anyway. I apologize for pushing the button before I clearly understood the process and taking up resources to undo my mistake. The best outcome would be to take down all three posters at your earliest convenience. Thank you, Thedevoutcatalyst (talk) 00:51, 18 May 2021 (UTC)

Wondering if knowing Dr Ravi lol and thankful to Google

Hello, Hope all is well with everyone. So I have a few questions. 1st and most important I was on twitter and I was brougt to a thread by another Twitter user. Thread was about Religion/ Bible/ end times in the world. I met a good friend that I actually lost touch with him. I miss him dearly. His name is Dr Ravi he is from India. He is such a kind good hearted man. I loved talking about the Bilbe with him, but Im not sure that he said he works at Google. So anyway another topic thats about today. I was wondering why my browser directed me to this page?. So I was hoping someone can give me answers to me beibg directed to the Ceo of Google lol ? Espcially, since I believe lol that a few friends are playing a funny joke on me lol . What they did was tell me I own YouTube. I said to them haha how can this be real. Because, YouTube is owned by the same CEO of Google lol. So heres another topic I did have an incident a few years ago where some not so nice person used my debit card to buy numerous devices like iphones smart tv's etc. I told this person I know he used my card . Of course he denied it. But to make a long stort short. It was comfirmed I was correct about him using my debit card to buy numrous devices. I told him it was comfirmed, by the outstanding company Amazon whose customer service rep. Sent me an email welcoming me and thanking me for opening a new Amazon account and thanking me for a large 1st time purchase . So I emailed them back saying. 1st off I never opened an Amazon account and I dont want an Amazon account. Then they emailed me back saying here is tge purchases invoice of all item purchased with my debit card in my name and last 4 digjts on card. So i explained i never ordered all of those items. I dont have an Amazon account. Then I believe bur not so sure. But the Amazon customer service rep said they put my phone number on account and an alrernate phone number. Custimer service asked me if he can call me right then. I said yes please do. So when he called I asked him to read the alternate phone number. I said that not mine its my daughters father. So Amazon called him and askes him to comfirm his order and asked for another form of purchasing since the card did not go throug. So My daughtera fathers used his own checking account. I was so greatful to Amazon for there excelent customer service. But then a few weeks later I came on my cell phone and seen numerous devices on my account. Then the disapeared. So i went to the Google help center asking the rep if he can see the devices . Whle he was checking i told him the whole amazon story. And the kind Google rep said yes I see them. I said really how can you see or tell the devices. He says that I was in Google and they were in Chrome. Lol i told him yeah thats my creepy daughters father. So even though he gave amazon the checking account check. The devices were all in my name lol. He kept the account just changed payment method. Anyway I always loved Google and your Help center is the Best. Now heres the last topic. I sign in online. I know the Google rep in the help center was in California. But this year i thought i was talking to california but this person said he was in pennsylvania acting like the rep that helped me with the device problem i had wirh my daughters father a few years ago. So this guy was acting like he works at Google and used the the california rep name too. I believe theres a few people in pa acting like the Real Google people in california. Its very strange. Do you know about this? I DID ASK THE guy i know in california if he knows theres a guy in pa acting like him he said yes. Now dose Google in Cali no If theres a google company in pa axting likw xalifornia workers maybe even owners? Thankz for giving a page to ask questuons if youre not sure its ok. I will ways love Google because they are very helpful kind and courtious. I worked at comcast xable for almost 20 years ans i alwqts treared my customers with kindness. Ok have a blessed day God Bless Google in Jesus name Amen. — Preceding unsigned comment was added by 2601:47:101:4490:6406:D347:4020:A3CB (talk) 22:52, 16 May 2021 (UTC)

@Ho3inyahel: You can nominate that image for deletion, but you did grant an irrevocable license last December and it is currently used in a draft article in the English-language Wikipedia. Then again, I suspect that article will be deleted, because the only contributor is you, its subject. Please see en:WP:COI.

@Vda47: Hi, and welcome. I am sorry to inform you that you have triggered Special:AbuseFilter/153 by trying to cross-wiki upload a smaller (<50,000 bytes or <2,000,000 pixels) jpg image as a new user while leaving the summary intact. The image you tried to upload is smaller, and you indicated it's your own work. Usually when someone uploads a smaller image, it is a copyright violation taken from the web. If you made the image yourself, please upload the full-size original of it per COM:HR, including EXIF metadata. If you did not make the image, please see Commons:Licensing for why we can't accept it, and have the image photographer / designer license it on their official website or social media, or send the image and permission via OTRS with a carbon copy to you. If you can't get a compliant license, the image may still be uploaded to English Wikipedia in compliance with en:WP:F because we don't allow Fair Use here. If you change the summary or use our Upload Wizard instead, you should be able to avoid that filter.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 00:27, 18 May 2021 (UTC)

Images on pages that don't have a 2021 copyright date

Hi, can I upload images that don't have a 2021 copyright date? For example, the website http://www.minanmotor.com/index.php/welcome has images I would like to upload , and the copyright says "© 2019 All rights reserved". Because it does not say "© 2021 All rights reserved", am I able to upload these images? Other examples:

I would appreciate it if someone could let me know if these websites have no current restrictions to upload. DestinationFearFan (talk) 20:09, 17 May 2021 (UTC)

@DestinationFearFan: Of course not. Please read COM:NETCOPYVIO again.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 00:22, 18 May 2021 (UTC)
DestinationFearFan, assuming this isn't a joke I believe you need to learn a lot more about copyright before you even consider uploading any files that are not your own work. Otherwise, you will just waste your time doing things others will then waste their time undoing. - Jmabel ! talk 01:27, 18 May 2021 (UTC)

Please feel free to request Autopatrol group membership at COM:RFR when you think you are ready (once you have made more than 500 useful non-botlike edits), having that should allow you to upload mp3 files. Until then, you may reencode the audio into Vorbis or Opus and upload it as an .ogg or .oga file (or use any other format accepted per COM:FT#Sound). Then, please see Commons:Licensing for why we can't accept as-is without permission, and have that Executive Producer post Commons:Licensing compliant permission for such work on their website or social media presence or send the file and permission via OTRS with a carbon copy to you.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 12:41, 18 May 2021 (UTC)

Need Help Picking a Photo

Hello editors on Wikimedia Commons. I am an editor on the EN Wikipedia. @Jeff G.: Thank you for your reply! That's a pity. Should I contact the writers of the article to ask them for explicit permission? Or is this not the way to go? And is this permission usually quite easy to get? Or would you advise me to rewrite my article so that I don't need these figures from this paper? This is also an option, but I think the level of the wikipedia article would be higher when these figures are added to the text. Why classified as "not a real user"?

I had problems uploading a jpg image (which I made myself) for use on an English page. It appears that I was classified in 2017 as being "not a real user" and I assume that this was the actual problem. If this is the case, what does one do to show one is a real user? The alternative being to create a new account, but Wikipedia recommends not to use your real name as it will be visible to others. So it could happen again that I'm in that case classified as "not a real user". My current name is based on the private e-mail address that I created after moving to Sweden ("sverige") in combination with my first name spelled backwards. Please advise. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Dranoel sverige (talk • contribs) 06:56, 20 May 2021 (UTC)

  • @Dranoel sverige: It looks like your attempt at uploading a picture was stopped by a filter that rather enthusiastically prevents people uploading low-resolution pictures as their own work. Happily, that filter only applies to the particular upload route that you used. If you start at Special:UploadWizard instead you won't be affected by the edit filter and you should be able to upload your file. --bjh21 (talk) 20:15, 20 May 2021 (UTC)

File:Inscription of Hüis Tolgoi.jpg

Hello there, I recently uploaded a file on Commons, a photograph of the 5th-7th-century Hüis Tolgoi. I uploaded it on Commons because I supposed the copyright in this case is solely of the creator; that is, that the photographer has no rights in this case, treating the inscription as a two-dimensional object, such as a page from a manuscript for example. However, they made me notice it might not be so, and I'm not so sure anymore. I wanted to bring the matter to your attention. Thanks.--Haldir Marchwarden (talk) 16:40, 20 May 2021 (UTC)

I recently uploaded 'Betsy Beutler.jpg'(link to photo), a public domain photo from the photographer Colin Key. His Flickr account shows the image as Public Domain, however shortly after uploading yesterday it was taken down and the Flickr account blocked from re-uploading apparently.

I have taken the step of contacting Mr. Key and confirming that this photo was, in fact, intended to be in the public domain. However now that the photo has been removed I'm not sure what to do to remediate? Thank you!

--3shoggoth (talk) 17:43, 20 May 2021 (UTC)

This is disingenuous. The explanation of the issue, and the process "to remediate," has already been explained. Эlcobbola talk 17:48, 20 May 2021 (UTC)

Source help please

Hi all, I am collating information on my great-grandfather's art work.

He was a portrait and landscape painter born at the end of the 19th century. Not famous or relevant in the discourse of art, but he's relevant to me.

I have come across an image attributed to someone with the same name, and living roughly at the same time as my ancestor. The source of the image on Wikimedia Commons, (https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Wilhelm_Dohmann_Blick_auf_Stadt_und_Feste_Kufstein.jpg) is an auction house and has so far not responded to my requests for more information about their biography details for that image. After discussing this and comparing signatures from other paintings with a museum registrar we have come to the conclusion, that the auction house must have taken the birth and death dates from a profile on ancestry from a man with the same name.

I was wanting to know if there's anything I can do to change that info, as it seems to be perpetuated through the internet, as of now a museum in Riga (my ancestors birth place) has now the wrong bio details on one of his paintings. That museum as well, so far has not provided any information on clarifying the situation. The user who uploaded that image has not been active for a few years, so I don't know if contacting them would be of any use.

Not sure how to proceed, I just want to have the right dates and places on the internet. thanks Pisa911 (talk) 03:05, 21 May 2021 (UTC)

PS: I am a newbie here, so any help on how to use all the tools at the bottom of the template to write within the guidelines would be appreciated. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Pisa911 (talk • contribs) 03:05, 21 May 2021‎ (UTC)

File:Berlin Regierungsviertel gespiegelt.jpg

Ref File:Berlin Regierungsviertel gespiegelt.jpg in 5.1 April 2021, Angles and Squares - I have managed to corrupt the file name so it now reads à===217.Berlin Regierungsviertel gespiegelt===. Apologies for this. I can only assume I mistyped something. Are you able to undo this?

Also a user, name Gazamp, has gone and awarded one of my photos (126.East Cliff, Whitby in the same section) both a 2 star and a heart at the same time.

I am really not having a good day!

Thank you in expectation.

So i'm trying to improve a wikipedia page, and i'm trying to upload an image that's owned by wikipedia, (i'm trying to add Flag_of_Nevada.svg to "List of flags by color combination Blue" [11] in ) But since i don't have the copyright i can't upload it, How do I? — Preceding unsigned comment added by ABSM 23 (talk • contribs) 15:09, 21 May 2021 (UTC)

Unable to update file

I have tried several times to fix File:The Shingle Spit at Hurst Beach - geograph.org.uk - 178625.jpg. My "fixed" version most noticeably has a more natural shingle colour, rather than the strange and unnatural yellow of the original. It is easily visually distinguishable in the File History list. However, whatever I do, I cannot get the fixed version to be the current one. While two previous versions (19:09, 21 May 2021 and 19:11, 21 May 2021) in the file history show correctly, the current version obstinately remains the original strange yellow one. Could anyone have a look at this and see if they can see what's going wrong? I thought at first there may just be a brief delay in updating, but it has gone on too long now. Thanks. ITookSomePhotos (talk) 19:39, 21 May 2021 (UTC)

OK, I deleted all my browser cached files, and now it displays correctly. I don't know why I would have to do that ... but, anyway, maybe it is not the fault of Wiki. ITookSomePhotos (talk) 20:02, 21 May 2021 (UTC)

Images from patents

Are images from patents in the public domain, so they may be uploaded to Commons? Sigmundg (talk) 04:05, 21 May 2021 (UTC)

  • @Sigmundg: Typically no, but laws may vary by country. Obviously, they eventually fall out of copyright like any other image. - Jmabel ! talk 16:05, 21 May 2021 (UTC)
  • As for many government records, such documents are usually published into the public domain. Because the process of government is made complicated otherwise, so they write the law to make this easy for themselves! Or at least, they're made available under a free licence. This does vary by country, and it can vary between a licence (or PD) that makes them freely accessible completely, to one that just makes them available for facsimile reproduction but limits their use (there may be modification limits, or limits on republishing to protect their government publishing business).
US: they're broadly PD. There are some exceptions applicable to some parts of some patents 37 CFR 1.71(d) & (e) and 1.84(s) You can use {{PD-US-patent-no notice}} to indicate this. Andy Dingley (talk) 17:42, 21 May 2021 (UTC)
So that means that is is OK to take a scree-shot of a figure in a US patent and upload it here? If is it, what lisence should I use? --Sigmundg (talk) 12:44, 22 May 2021 (UTC)

photo's

Daer, Can I use old pictures/photos (> 50 years) made for and paid by my family? They were sometimes for private use and sometimes made for publicity reasons. Hereby an example:

Thank you, Roeland — Preceding unsigned comment added by Familie Robert (talk • contribs) 12:02, 21 May 2021 (UTC)

  • @Familie Robert: You don't say what country. Clearly you would not own copyright on these unless it was explicitly transferred by the (paid) photographer, but some of them might have passed into the public domain.
  • @Basvb, EugeneZelenko, JuTa, and Fitindia: you've apparently been involved in prior deletions of this user's files (and, I believe, have reached conflicting decisions about the same images), so I am pinging you here for any comments you may have.
  • Someone may be able to give you a meaningful answer if you indicate:
    1. What country or countries? Are they all Netherlands?
    2. Date(s), with whatever precision you can give in each case
    3. Anything you might know about the photographer(s), especially whether they are still alive and, if not, when they died
      • "Own work", which you claimed when uploading is certainly wrong.
    4. Whether any of these images have ever been published
  • Also, please see COM:SIGN about signing your comments.
Jmabel ! talk 17:40, 21 May 2021 (UTC)
  • "Clearly you would not own copyright on these unless it was explicitly transferred by the (paid) photographer," isn't at all clear. There are many cases, and in modern Europe it's pretty much universal now as the default, that "work for hire" would transfer copyright to the client by default. A photographer's contract may vary this, but that would be their task to demonstrate.
Country and age may vary this (France would incline the other way, tending to favour the rights of artists and photographers). But it's far from "clearly" one thing or the other. Andy Dingley (talk) 17:46, 21 May 2021 (UTC)
@Andy Dingley: Re: 'In modern Europe it's pretty much universal now as the default, that "work for hire" would transfer copyright to the client by default.' Really? Very different in the U.S. Is there somewhere we have documentation on that? Totally news to me. - Jmabel ! talk 17:56, 21 May 2021 (UTC)
  • As always, it's hard to give simple links to this stuff. Here's the UK law, but it relies on a complex definition for "employee".[1] That's also a definition which is in flux, as UK tax law pushes to move more and more freelance contractors into employee status for tax reasons, but this is a knock-on effect. This[2] is quite an interesting read on a US perspective onto issues in dealing with EU law. There's little difference in the law between EU and US, until it comes to moral rights, the practical difference here is what the default assumption will be re status as a work for hire, in the absence of any other formal agreement. That much also varies between EU countries - the law for how a "work for hire" is protected is harmonised across the EU (i.e. legal standards applied to a particular class of item), but whether it counts as one or not varies a lot and would depend on where it was created (i.e. what class of item something is to be regarded as can depend on local rules). This is quite typical of EU law, as it's the only practical way to make such things work between jurisdictions. Norway doesn't do this, Germany doesn't for "art" but does for software, the UK does it quite strongly, particularly for photographs. So EU photographers have become increasingly protectionist about their IP rights, but this is due to the legal position having shifted the other way, and photographers now using more formalised contracts in reaction. A request to delete image of signature

I have got a request through Discord after they tried to delete ลายเซ็นไชยันต์ ไชยพร.png from infobox in Thai wikipedia and claimed that he is the signature-owner son. He said his father want to remove this signature because of impersonation. The question is can we take action on this or we can't? If we can, how to do it?

Also I discussed with local wikipedians (on Discord, not really public) and tell that in this case, the owner of signature itself is professor and he already have a number of public thesis. Additionally it might be censorship on Wikipedia which is not Wikipedia at all. If they want to do something with this they have to do in Commons.

In another view, I have been ask on #wikipedia-en too and get a new point of view that If the signature isn't really important to article and the subject request we can simply delete it. I did ask them by didn't provide any context but if the owner want to delete their signature from infobox.

Honestly, I can't confirm that he really is his son. And if we can't do this I may show them this discussion. — 𝙋𝙖𝙩𝙨𝙖𝙜𝙤𝙧𝙣 𝙔.ᴛᴀʟᴋ 01:30, 22 May 2021 (UTC)

  • @Patsagorn Y.: what would be the basis for removal? "I don't like it" is not a basis for removal. - Jmabel ! talk 05:39, 22 May 2021 (UTC)
They have concerns about impersonate in various activities I guess. — 𝙋𝙖𝙩𝙨𝙖𝙜𝙤𝙧𝙣 𝙔.ᴛᴀʟᴋ 05:47, 22 May 2021 (UTC)
    * Then the person with those concerns can try raising them in a deletion request, but I'm pretty sure they will not get what they want and may produce a Streisand effect. Too simple to copyright. I don't believe there is anything you can do to prevent someone reproducing your signature as long as they don't use it fraudulently. - Jmabel ! talk 15:17, 22 May 2021 (UTC)
Legally maybe not, but I see no reason why Wikipedia/Wikimedia should facilitate the reproduction of the signatures of living people. I disagree that these should be uploaded, unless they are already very widely publicised and available, and have some actual importance or significance beyond merely "signature of so-and-so". Copyright issue

Hi,

I'm having trouble uploading media on wikimedia commons. I've read the steps, but I respectfully ask, may someone explain it to me in a simpler way? I saw some photos uploaded from screenshot youtube and it ended up working. I tried it too, but ended up being nominated for deletion. The reason is that the one I uploaded does not have a free license tag, but I also look at photos that have been successfully uploaded by others, there are no description that indicate as free license. So, can someone explain what I did wrong?

Thank you so much, in advance — Preceding unsigned comment added by Yoojbyul (talk • contribs) 07:15, 22 May 2021 (UTC)

  • @Yoojbyul: What you did wrong was to upload something that was neither free-licensed nor public domain. This is not a matter of you having difficulty uploading: this is a matter of uploading material that is not accepted here.
  • You say, "I also look at photos that have been successfully uploaded by others, there are no description that indicate as free license." Can you give an example? - Jmabel ! talk 15:20, 22 May 2021 (UTC)

Confusion of copyright with an image

Hello, I want to add this image to commons [12], which is in a museum of India. The gov website says that it was made in 1930 (which should be under Public Domain as per PD-India). However there's one problem, the site identifies the painter as P. Roy. There is no info about him google and it is hard whether he died before 1961. So what should I do? I think that it is under Public Domain as it is in a museum and the website doesn't speak about its copyright. If I am wrong, then please correct me. .245CMR.👥 📜 08:48, 18 May 2021 (UTC)

Hi 245CMR,
couldn't you contact the museum and ask them about the paintor (life-dates etc.)? WRT to copyright information from the museum: their subsite [13] has to be read that they claim (sort of) fair-use for their website-content, which doesnm't really help. --Túrelio (talk) 09:01, 18 May 2021 (UTC)
@Túrelio: Sorry for my late reply, I just check the img once. There is something on the bottom right corner of the img, which says "©, all rights reserved". Does this mean that it is copyright?.245CMR.👥 📜
It certainly means someone is claiming copyright which, sadly, is rather poorly correlated to whether the image is actually copyrighted.
Under the precautionary principle, we need positive reason to believe the image is either public domain or sufficiently freely licensed. I'd call that mark a piece of inconclusive evidence against that, but in an inconclusive case either way, we should not have it on Commons. - Jmabel ! talk 18:58, 20 May 2021 (UTC)
@Jmabel: Ok, thank you very much for guidance. Since we don't know the death year of P Roy, after which year would be safe to add that Karna painting to Wikimedia? BTW, I recently saw this img, which also has "© all rights reserved" in the bottom right corner. The creator is Abanindranath Tagore, who passed away in 1951. Is it under public domain (under PD India) as death year of Tagore is known? .245CMR.👥 📜 17:47, 22 May 2021 (UTC)
  • @245CMR: Per Commons:Copyright rules by territory/India, in India copyright subsists in any literary, dramatic, musical or artistic work published within the lifetime of the author until 60 years after the author's death. So something where the author died before 1961 (that is, up to and including 1960) would now be public domain. Works of Abanindranath Tagore should be fine.
  • If we have no idea when someone died, or how old they were when they did the work in question, we usually allow a margin of 120 years. So for a 1930 work, without further information we wouldn't allow it to be posted until 2050. However, if we could establish a birth date, even without a death date we might be able to be less conservative. For example, if we knew the person was already 50 when he painted this, in a country where the term of copyright is life + 60 years it would be pretty safe to say that it's OK at 100 years from creation (allowing for the possibility of living to 90). Etc. - Jmabel ! talk 05:42, 23 May 2021 (UTC)

What are the rules of uploading organization logo? Is it prohibited to attach logo obtained from its organization official website on a Wikipedia page? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Hananfahrezi (talk • contribs) 01:21, 24 May 2021 (UTC)

  • @Hananfahrezi: Assuming the logo is complex enough to be copyrighted (standards vary by country) and isn't so old as not to be copyrighted (again, varies by country, but if it's 20th or 21st Century, then it is probably not so old that its copyright has lapsed), then it is copyrighted work, and like any other copyrighted work needs a license from the copyright-holder. So except for simple text logos or those incorporating very simple geometric shapes, most logos do not belong on Commons.
  • As for uploading directly to Wikipedia, each language has its own rules. The English-language Wikipedia makes provision for the use of non-free logos. See en:Template:Non-free logo. - Jmabel ! talk 06:20, 24 May 2021 (UTC)

Uploading image generated from PDB model of a protein structure

Hello

I'm trying to upload an image of a membrane protein, zebrafish Otop1 (PDB:6nf4), whose structure is available on the PDB database (https://www.rcsb.org/structure/6NF4), so that I can upload it later to the Wikipedia article for Otopetrin proteins (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Otopetrin_family).

I created the specific image in ChimeraX software (https://www.rbvi.ucsf.edu/chimerax/index.html), so I thought I would license it under "Creative Commons CC0 1.0 Universal Public Domain Dedication" and describe it as "own work". I saw this example: (https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Tmem16a_EMD-3860.png), which was very similar to what I'm trying to do and thought I would do it the same way.
However, I've tried to upload the image in Wikimedia commons (https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:Upload) and the preview looks fine, but after I press upload, I get no message saying "upload complete" or something of the sort. How do I know if my upload succeeded or not? If it failed for some reason, I'd like to know why and fix what's wrong.
Thank you,
Batuujin

Logo for an organisation

Hi there, am I able to upload a logo for an organisation? — Preceding unsigned comment added by LMJ050100 (talk • contribs) 06:29, 24 May 2021 (UTC)

Depends on which country it is from, but usually no, or only for very simple logos without any designs. Since it looks like you're from Australia, the answer is most definitely a complete no, because according to Australian law even simple geometric shapes are copyrightable. --Taktaal (talk) 09:41, 24 May 2021 (UTC)
@LMJ050100 and Taktaal: Would be OK if it is just text. Or, of course, if the logo-owner grants a license.
Also, if you need it for an article in the English-language Wikipedia (en-wiki) you can upload it to en-wiki (not to Commons) and use en:Template:Non-free logo- Jmabel ! talk 13:38, 24 May 2021 (UTC)

publication of images of Daria Gamsaragan

Dear Madam, Sir, My user name is Madeleine Djabourov. I have submitted 5 files to Wikimedia concerning Daria Gamsaragan (1902-1986). I exchanged many emails with the volunteers in Wikimedia in France and so far I was not allowed to publish these files.

Please find below the messages that I have already sent. I can try to summarize the situation here, in English: 1. My sister, Jeanine Djabourov and I, Madeleine Djabourov, we are the owners of these images because we are the heiresses of Daria Gamsaragan; we have inherited her archives and her personal collection of sculptures. Her wills were registered at a notary in France before her death. 2. All images that we want to share on Wikimedia illustrate the life and sculptures of Daria Gamsaragan. Some of these images have been published during Daria Gamsaragan’s life, in different newspapers, but the photographers’ names was not mentioned in these publications, even when their names were known. We can obviously suppose that this situation results from an agreement between the photographers and Daria Gamsaragan and we observed this repeatedly in many publications, even in the recent ones. 3. As explained in our messages, for some prints, the names of the photographers are not indicated anywhere (some pictures were taken probably around 1925). For other images, we have the negative frames of a whole series of pictures and we don’t know the name of the photographer. We asked to a professional photographic shop to print the numerical versions of these pictures that we have submitted to Wikimedia. 4. Since Daria Gamsaragan’s death, in 1986, nobody asked for any permission to use any of these images. Our wish is to share these personal images showing Daria Gamsaragan during her life and images of her work on a “free access” site, as Wikimedia, under the license CC BY-SA 4.0. We can propose more images that are issued from Daria Gamsaragan’s archives with the same procedure.

Here are the messages in French: I. Nous sommes Jeanine Djabourov et Madeleine Djabourov les héritières de Daria Gamsaragan, artiste sculpteur et écrivaine, décédée en 1986 et nous sommes les ayants droit de ses œuvres et de ses archives par son testament enregistré chez un notaire en France. II. Madeleine Djabourov: Photos of sculptures, or other 3D artistic works, are considered derivative works and require TWO permissions. One from the photographer, who is the copyright holder of the image, and one from the artist, who is the copyright holder of the sculpture, or their heirs. According to your post, if seems you might get the latter but the former seems highly unlikely because you don't know who they are/were. Sorry to not have better news for you. Uploading a picture from Instagram with the owners consent

Hello! There is a picture I want to upload and use for a Wikipedia page about someone that I got from their Instagram. I have sent them a message on the app asking if I am allowed to use the image for their Wikipedia page and they said yes. If the person has given people permission to freely use their images what law would allow me to use this on here? I will still give the proper credits. — Preceding unsigned comment added by FAILURE.K (talk • contribs) 22:38, 24 May 2021 (UTC)

FAILURE.K, you need to ask them to put a note on their Instagram, ideally next to the photo, saying they licence the image under a CC-BY-SA 4.0 license (or another acceptable license). Then you link to that, saying that's where you got it from and it's under X license. Alternately, you can use the Commons:OTRS system, but that is generally slower and more work for them. Note that they can't allow ONLY Wikipedia to use the image; Wikipedia only allows images that are reusable elsewhere, too. But yes, what you are trying to do is totally OK and encouraged! Hope it goes well. HLHJ (talk) 23:45, 24 May 2021 (UTC)

Advice on systematically renaming files from the same source

Hello. All the files in Category:The standard cyclopedia of modern agriculture and rural economy (1908) currently have very similar names that only describe the book they're sourced from and do not provide any details about the contents of the files themselves. For that reason I believe they should be renamed under the second rational for renaming files. The question I have is: what should the new names of the files be? I am thinking that they should describe the contents of the files (obviously) and include what appears to be a catalog number listed at the end of each of the current names. For this image, I am thinking of asking for it to be renamed to something along the lines of "Illustration of Buckwheat (Polygonun fagopyrum) (14598270260)". I'm thinking the names of the files should also contain some information about they're source. How much information would make sense, just the year and a short version of the book's title? Any advice would be greatly appreciated, thanks and take care. —The Editor's Apprentice (Talk) 02:05, 24 May 2021 (UTC)

  • @The Editor's Apprentice: Yes, you could probably do a series of systematic renames like that. Definitely keep the numbers that correspond to Flickr's image numbering. No particular reason to say "illustration of". Probably good to keep "The standard cyclopedia of modern agriculture and rural economy (1908)" after the meaningful description but before the Flickr image number, maybe set off by a dash, e.g. "Buckwheat (Polygonun fagopyrum) - Standard Cyclopedia of Modern Agriculture and Rural Economy (1908) - (14598270260)". - Jmabel ! talk 13:35, 24 May 2021 (UTC)
    • @Jmabel: Your proposal sounds good to me. The reason I was thinking of including "Illustration of" in the title was to differentiate it from photographs or types other images. If that information is more appropriate in the "Summary" section of file's page I'll put it somewhere there instead. Thanks again. —The Editor's Apprentice (Talk) 16:46, 24 May 2021 (UTC)

PERCHé AVETE CANCELLATO IL MIO APPROFONDIMENTO SULL'IMPRESSIONISMO AMERICANO E PAUL KLEE?

WHY DID YOU CANCEL MY DEEPENING ON AMERICAN IMPRESSIONISM AND PAUL KLEE?

Good evening, I am a university student and I have to complete a workshop activity by modifying two entries in wikipedia. I had chosen AMERICAN IMPRESSIONISM of which I quote the source and the link between PAUL KLEE and the music seen by BOULEZ. What have I done that was inconvenient? the texts are mine, taken from those sources cited.

@ROSALBA NATALE: Ciao e benvenuto.
Hi, and welcome. I am sorry to inform you that you have triggered Special:AbuseFilter/153 by trying to cross-wiki upload png and smaller (<50,000 bytes or <2,000,000 pixels) pdf and jpg images as a new user while leaving the summary intact. Such uploads of png images are not allowed at all. The following applies to each image. You indicated it's your own work. Usually when someone uploads a smaller image, it's a copyright violation taken from the web. Please upload the full-size original of it per COM:HR, including any metadata, but if you were not the original image designer or photographer, that person may need to license it on their official website or social media or send permission via OTRS with a carbon copy to you. Also, any png image will look fuzzy when scaled down (due to design decisions discussed in phab:T192744) or jaggy when scaled up, so you may want to upload svg or jpg versions, too. If you can't get a compliant license, the image may still be uploaded to English or Italian Wikipedia in compliance with en:WP:F or it:WP:EDP because we don't allow Fair Use here. If you change the summary or use our Upload Wizard instead, you should be able to avoid that filter. I don't know about deepening, but here is what else I know about your activities. This edit was definitely vandalism, and has been reverted. All of your mainspace edits on itwiki have similarly been reverted. Please discuss them with Lorenzo Longo at it:Discussioni utente:ROSALBA NATALE#Re:aiuto.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 11:11, 25 May 2021 (UTC)

Loading of scan of a 1936 Romanian science journal

Is it possible to upload the scan from the scientific journal of 1936 published in the Kingdom of Romania? The journal ceased to exist during WWII or even earlier. The creater of the journal died in 1965. I found this image at Facebook. So the image can be used in Wikipedias of different languages. This is the first issue of the first Europena (and West) journal about research of aging. That is a quite interesting thing for decoration of some articles.

--Lady3mlnm (talk) 19:37, 24 May 2021 (UTC)

@Lady3mlnm: Hi, and welcome. Per COM:Romania, you would have to wait until 1965+70+1=2036 (1 January) for it to become PD in Romania unless you can get permission from the creator's heirs. @NickGbur: Hi, and welcome. That logo has been judged to be too complex to be under TOO in the country of origin. Transcriptions for audio files (follow-up)

Dear fellow Wikimedians, a month ago I first asked the question here (see it here, archived) seeking guidance on whether and how to include written transcriptions of voice audio files. I got one response, pointing me to Commons:Timed Text.

I would like to follow up and clarify my question a bit further. For voice audio files, for example Audio files about air traffic control, would it be welcomed if a transcription was included in the audio file description? In my view including transcriptions of audio files with recorded voices, would be a significant benefit in several ways:

  • It would enhance the searchability of the files (a word search would have the potential to yield more relevant results)
  • It would make the contents of the recording much more immediately evident, being able to pin point any fragment of special interest to the listener.
  • It would enhance accessibility for those with hearing disabilities, or those who are not native speakers to the language in which the recording is.
  • Even for native speakers, low quality audio (i.e: air traffic recordings) would also become more easily understandable when accompanied by a transcription.

While I think Commons:Timed Text can be a good solution in some situations, I think it is much more labor intensive, and also limits what text can be read (and searched) at any given time.

So I wonder if including a full transcription in the file description is a current and welcomed practice (of course, not mandatory), or if this is a new idea that ought to be proposed to the community.

Thank you. Al83tito (talk) 04:09, 9 May 2021 (UTC)

  • @Al83tito: Yes, a transcription is welcome, presuming the file itself is in scope. - Jmabel ! talk 06:08, 9 May 2021 (UTC)
    • @Jmabel: thank you for your kind response. Do you know (or anyone one else) if a written policy exists on such transcriptions? If not, I wonder if this would be a topic suitable for making a proposal to the community to create a better shared understanding, and to encourage (without requiring) contributors of content to include transcriptions alongside audio files. Thank you Al83tito (talk) 18:24, 17 May 2021 (UTC)
@Al83tito: I suggest you start with the description field. If the constraints of that field become a problem, you can move to below the information template or equivalent.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 01:18, 18 May 2021 (UTC)

I would like to use images from The Royal Society that have a CC(by) license on wikipedia and other wikimedia projects, is it o.k. since I am taking it off the web?

If I read the rules regarding creative commons right, I believe that I should be able to do this, but I just wanted to check in to make sure it is o.k...

I would like to use images from The Royal Society article that has a CC(by) license on wikipedia for an entry I am making in Neural Darwinism:

https://royalsocietypublishing.org/doi/10.1098/rstb.2015.0476

The article has the following notice posted:

"Published by the Royal Society under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution License http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/, which permits unrestricted use, provided the original author and source are credited."

Can I upload this to wikimedia commons and then use it for wikipedia with proper citations?

I appreciate your assistance in this matter.

Upload derivated work with OTRS license

I uploaded some pictures in .jpg format with OTRS permission. However, the quality is not the very best, so I converted them to .png format, upscaled them a bit with AI tech and did some minor color-corrections.

I saw that it's permitted to upload the edited pictures as new files like File:Lilith - John Collier (1892).jpg. My question is: What to do with the OTRS ticket? Do I have to add that to the edited files as well or is it enough to name the author, date, license and add the derived work-template? Thank you very much. Henni147 (talk) 17:11, 28 May 2021 (UTC)

@Henni147: Hi, and welcome. Please reply to the ticket with that info. You may join in the conversation by emailing permissions-commons@wikimedia.org and including the following in the subject bar of the email message, with square brackets: [Ticket#: 2021052510005122].   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 18:18, 28 May 2021 (UTC)
@Jeff G.: I see, so it's unavoidable to bother the OTRS team with checking these new files as well. In that case, I will reconsider which files are really worth an edited upload. Thank you very much for your quick response. Henni147 (talk) 18:44, 28 May 2021 (UTC)

Link to an image on wikimedia commons is not working

Marceltraini (talk) 23:45, 28 May 2021 (UTC)I'm trying to post this image on wikipedia and it's not working

@Marceltraini: the image is currently in use in en:Art in Odd Places. Also you seem to have created a second user account for Commons (Marceltraini (talk · contribs)), while you have a different user account in English Wikipedia Marceltrain (talk · contribs). Did you have a typo while trying to login? The same account should work for all Wikimedia projects. MKFI (talk) 06:59, 29 May 2021 (UTC)

searching procedure unknown

Please don’t block me...I am ignorant and confused, not malign and abusive. It should be clear that I do not know how to use Wikipedia...including this contact procedure. That is what I need help with...to prevent further flailing around and getting punished by excommunication. I STILL don’t know how this help procedure works and am not sure that this will ever reach anyone to help me LEARN the procedure. I’ll be excommunicated before I learn the way. If I can find a way to submit this, can you help me with learning a search procedure? Clear instructions would cure my ignorant flailing around if I could find them. How do I find the list of works by an artist? A “Gallery” link has appeared sometimes on some artists, but not consistently and not for all artists with a page. One way to put my question would be: When I search for an artist and find his page how do I see the GALLERY tab that appears only sometimes? How do I find the whole list of an artist’s work if no gallery link is shown? — Preceding unsigned comment was added by 2601:643:8880:160:F80F:5339:BF9C:D863 (talk) 19:18, 29 May 2021 (UTC)

Image

Hello, a question, can someone explain in detail how to modify an image and how to upload this modification, in the description of the image says that I must use a notepad to modify the image but does not give more information, in this regard can someone explain how I can modify an image with a text editor and how I can upload a version of that image?-JSeb05 (talk) 22:24, 29 May 2021 (UTC)

  • To upload a modified version of an image, you download the full-resolution version of the image to your computer, make whatever modifications you want with whatever tool you want, and then upload the new image. Usually you will want to upload to a distinct filename and link the two images with {{Derivative works}} | This file was derived from: in the "other versions" field of the Information template. Is copied and modified Own Work?

I used a diagram that had non-English text and recreated it with English text. The source is a file in commons that has a BY-SA 3.0 licence. At the time of uploading, the wizard asked me if it was my Own Work, and I selected yes, since I worked on it. The wizard didn't ask me for a source. Now in the summary, in the Source field it says "Own work" and I had to mention the actual source in the Description.

In order to be clear on what Own Work means, I checked up Commons:Own work and Commons:Derivative works, and the FAQs and Help Desk archives, yet I do not get an idea on what it means for a modified diagram on Commons. One of the archived conversations suggests that modifications that are "worked on" are to be treated as Own work. Kindly clarify. Jay (talk) 07:22, 23 May 2021 (UTC)

Although none of the sections in Commons:Derivative works talk about modification of an existing file in commons, the intro seems to imply that modifying an existing file and uploading it as a new file, does come under derivative work and not own work. I uploaded my next modified file under the misleading option "This file is not my own work" (since there is no option for derivative work in the wizard). Let me know which of my two uploads followed the right process? Jay (talk) 10:17, 23 May 2021 (UTC)
I went to the village pump and looked at the archives which pointed me to a (failed?) proposal in Commons talk:Upload Wizard/Archive 1#"own work", which explains why the wizard shows up the non-informative/misleading options. Jay (talk)
Thanks, I changed my first image to a derived work. It is my first time using the new wizard. For my 3rd and 4th files, I went to the older wizard which I found more flexible. I did not understand the 3rd point about CC-0. I did not use the derived from and derivative versions templates for my new images because they were adding redundant text. Jay (talk) 22:06, 23 May 2021 (UTC)
The point about CC-0 in this context is that if you say your contribution is CC-0 then you are waiving your rights to your modification (including any indication of license or attribution) so any reuser is perfectly legal giving the same credit as they would for the original work. The only issue with that would be if you made modifications that the original copyright-holder wouldn't want anyone to confuse as being theirs. Example: File:Asahel Curtis panorama of Fremont district and north end of Lake Union from Queen Anne Hill (Seattle, 1902).jpg, so people could treat this as public domain (which was the status of the underlying photos).
And the reason I am mentioning {{Derived from}} / {{Derivative versions}} rather than some other paired templates is that these are the most generic, so they would be legitimate no matter what changes you made. - Jmabel ! talk 06:15, 24 May 2021 (UTC)
Although I didn't follow, the issue that I understood is of the new upload wizard attributing my uploaded file under the previous author's name. This I have corrected by replacing the Author with my name for my uploaded files. Jay (talk) 07:27, 24 May 2021 (UTC)
@Jay: No, quite the opposite! You have to make sure that they still get attributed for their work. Look at the attribution in the license on File:Seattle - Hing Hay Park and Bush Hotel (hugin).jpg. I took the photo, Mliu92 modified it. The attribution makes that clear. It is very important that I, as photographer, am still credited. - Jmabel ! talk 13:30, 24 May 2021 (UTC)
@Jmabel: I had attributed the original author in the Source field using the Derived from template. Now I have removed the author from the Source field and added it to the Author field along with my name in a style seen in images like File:Johannes Duns Scotus - Abstraktive Erkenntnis.svg. How to create a redirect page

I feel a bit silly asking this question, but how do you create a category redirect page on Commons? On en.wiki, if you type the name of a page that doesn't exist, it will give you a red link you can open to start the page, but on Commons that doesn't happen. I can't figure out how to create a user subpage on Commons either, because likewise, you don't get a red link when you type a page name that doesn't exist, and there is no link for creating a new article as there is on en.wiki. Presumably I'm missing something very obvious, what is it? Gatoclass (talk) 15:48, 30 May 2021 (UTC)

@Gatoclass: When you say "type the name of a page that doesn't exist", where are you typing it? A link in any page text that is red takes me to the creation page. The most frequent way I create pages is to type the page name in the search box (e.g. "Category:My New Category") and then click the red 'Create the page "<X>" on this wiki!" link. – BMacZero (🗩) 16:48, 30 May 2021 (UTC)
Yes, I tried typing the name of the category I wanted to create in the search box BMacZero, but no redlink appears when I do that. And I can't create a category page for the page I want to create from a subcategory page because the redirect I want to create has no subcategories. I could create the category page I want from some other random category page, and then just delete the category from that page, but surely there is some more elegant way to do it than that? Gatoclass (talk) 17:22, 30 May 2021 (UTC)
You're probably using Special:MediaSearch, use Special:Search. You can also change the default in Special:Preferences. Dylsss (talk) 17:33, 30 May 2021 (UTC)
Ah, yes, Special:Search gives me the redlink. Thank you, Dylsss :) Gatoclass (talk) 17:53, 30 May 2021 (UTC)
@Gatoclass: If you have access to the URL bar at the top of your browser, you can go to Category:Jefftemp or https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Jefftemp and then replace "Jefftemp" with your desired category name. You can also name the category here in your reply with a prepended colon and create it that way.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 17:36, 30 May 2021 (UTC)

  • @Baseballfan1948: : I have no idea quite what you are intending here, but non-free images should not be uploaded to Commons, which does not accept a fair use basis. You can upload directly to the English-language Wikipedia on that basis, but Common is not involved in that, and the pages do not belong on Commons. - Jmabel ! talk 05:32, 31 May 2021 (UTC)

Sharing inherited or family photos via Commons

There are two pages on Wikipedia for my parents - Lt General Harold G. Moore and Julia Compton Moore. The family would like to add photos to relevant sections of the pages. For example, the Julia Compton Moore page does not have a photo of her.

However, many of the photos were taken by our parents or their friends using my parent's camera (as in, "Please take my picture"). Others may have been formal studio portraits they paid for.

May I add a few of these to the relevant pages using the "this file is my own work" option?

If it must be categorized under the "not my work" category, what is the "Another reason" wikitext I should insert.

thank you, Steve Moore — Preceding unsigned comment added by Stevmoore (talk • contribs) 13:18, 31 May 2021 (UTC)

@Stevmoore: Hi, welcome, and I'm sorry for your losses. {{Cc-by-sa-4.0-heirs}} or {{Cc-by-4.0-heirs}} should fit that purpose for photos your parents took. For photos their friends took, you would have to get permission from those friends or their heirs, posted online or sent via OTRS. For photos taken by professional photographers in studios, you would have to get permission from those professional photographers or their studios or heirs, posted online or sent via OTRS. Painter birth date

Unfortunately, Pisa911’s question was archived unanswered. If an artist's birth year is incorrect on a Commons file info page, can she correct it based on unpublished or self-published [18] research? If not, is there a way to indicate that it is disputed? Pelagic (talk) 13:37, 31 May 2021 (UTC)

@Pisa911 and Pelagic: Hi, and welcome. Sorry for the delay. Yes, she can correct it, and indicate the reference either in the description or on the associated file talk page.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 13:50, 31 May 2021 (UTC)
Thank you Pelagic and Jeff G., sorry for the late reply, for some reason I did not get an email notification (goes off to check settings). I will put together a request for change with documents that hopefully prove my case. As I am new to this, I might have to come back and ask for help where to request what or where to enter what data. Thanks for now. Pisa911 (talk) 01:35, 4 June 2021 (UTC)
Could I get some more advice please Pelagic ? I have just uploaded a self-portrait of the above mentioned artist [19] with a little bit more of biographical data. I'd appreciate it if someone could have a look at it and let me know if I need to add or delete anything. I was thinking of also uploading an image of his signature, as a reference, would that be useful and legal? If the image is within Commons criteria, i would suggest adding that link to the other image, as supplemental info? On another note, where would I have to look for "on the associated file talk page."? Thanks Pisa911 (talk) 02:17, 4 June 2021 (UTC)
@Pisa911: I did some transformations and edited the file description page for you, concentrating on the original work. Yes, the signature would be helpful. "the associated file talk page" is File talk:Wilhelm Dohmann Blick auf Stadt und Feste Kufstein.jpg.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 03:41, 5 June 2021 (UTC)
Thanks so much Jeff G. for your kind help. I was just now trying to add a comment on your talk page, but this seems a better place: I would like to know if I get images from my family (the heirs) of the paintings in their possession, do I have to get each one of them to send an email confirming their permission to me to use the photo of the painting? Is there another, "easier" and still legal way of doing that? For the time being I will concentrate on the family owned ones, but I would like to ultimately add all the ones I can find, so knowing which process to use and how make it easier (and more likely to be done) for auctioneers etc. would be great. TIA Pisa911 (talk) 03:54, 5 June 2021 (UTC)
@Pisa911: For each photo or artwork for which you are not an heir of the photographer or artist, when you have permission please upload the full-size original of it per COM:HR, including EXIF metadata, photographed perpendicular to the center without frame. If you did not make the original (or are not an heir of the person who did), please see Commons:Licensing for why we can't accept it, and have that person's heir post Commons:Licensing compliant permission for such work on their official website or social media presence or send the photo and permission via OTRS with a carbon copy to you. If you can't get a compliant license, the photo may still be uploaded to English Wikipedia in compliance with en:WP:F because we don't allow Fair Use here.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 15:27, 5 June 2021 (UTC)
