First steps tutorial

Our first steps tour and our frequently asked questions will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy (Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content).

You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold when contributing and assume good faith when interacting with others. This is a wiki.

Getting help

More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (webchat). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at the copyright village pump.

Goodies, tips, and tricks
  • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your graphic abilities.
  • You can find the files you have uploaded in your Uploads.
  • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~.
  • To link to an image page without embedding the image, type: [[:File:Foo.jpg]], which produces: File:Foo.jpg.
  • You may enable gadgets (custom features) for your account.
  • There are several tools to upload files.
  • Have you edited Wikipedia before? This guide might be useful.
Made a mistake?
  • Do you want to have a file renamed or moved? Use the move link and wait for an authorized user to rename it.
  • Do you want to have your recently uploaded picture removed? Tag it as {{speedy|reason here}}. For more information read the deletion guidelines.

@Elcobbola: I'm very sorry that I uploaded the file too early. I received explicit permission from the owner 'Phantom Kabocha' to adjust the size and upload any image from this archive under CC-BY 4.0 license and the person allows the commercial use of the pictures, if they get uploaded here on Wiki Commons. The user is not very familiar with the use of the OTRS generator or mail template and I want to ask how to handle the permission process best. It concerns the upload of 72 pictures from that archive. Hi, I'm not sure that we need all those files "so badly". Many seem to be similar, just with different outfits. About your question in the undeletion board, I think you may ask one admin if it's possible to upload the last one but... is it truly needed? Where do we put the limit between the need and the promotion? About upload again the 60 files in high-quality, it's a looooot of work. Why you didn't do this from the beginning? Commons is not a game or a place to promote anything. I think you can re-upload a new version of the files (same name, overwriting the old ones) without the need to start the OTRS process all over again. @Ganímedes: Don't worry, these pictures are not randomly picked. I selected them with specific articles in mind. There is a new page series about Yuzuru Hanyu on Wikipedia covering different topics (bios, Olympic seasons, achievements etc.), also an article on Wikiquote and many general skating articles about spins, steps, turns and moves in the field, where these pictures are needed for illustration.
Yuzuru Hanyu is the first two-time Olympic champion in men's singles in 66 years and he may win his third in February next year, so his pages are expected to grow a lot over the next months, but there wasn't a single competitive skating picture of him since 2015 (only some podium and gala shots), when I uploaded these 60. So they were really needed.
But yes, I totally agree with you that it would be much more economic to just replace the old pictures with new ones that have better resolution and color quality. My only concern is that according to the Commons guidelines AI upscaling is not considered as a minor edit (I did not overdo it, but still).
